Elephantiasis Disease
There is no vaccine or cure for lymphatic filariasis. Diethylcarbamazine (DEC), Albendazole and
Ivermectine are drugs used for people seeking prevention or already suffer from Lymphatic
Filariasis. The treatment help reduce microfilariae in human. People diagnosed with the disease
require taking DEC for a long period of time. The medication can kill adult worms slowly. People
at risk of getting the disease take the medication annually such as Albendazole 400 mg combined
with Ivermectin 200 mcg for every kg of body weight, or take Diethylcarbamazine citrate ( DEC)
6mg/ kg. Dosage is taken three times a day for three weeks annually for five years. This is a
method of prevention for non infected individuals. For people that already have signs... Show more

This will reduce the swelling of the infected limbs and will help prevent further swelling. Also
washing the affected area with soap and water, then drying it and applying antibacterial and
antifungal cream, this step is done on a daily bases, it will prevent bacterial or fungal infection.
Patients with elephantiasis are prone to infections due to their damaged lymphatic system.
Therefore it is important to prevent any infections from spreading because the immune system
cannot fight any infections (Hoerauf 980). In Nepal there are clinics that use herbal remedies to
help reduce the appearance of the inflamed area like essential oils of Lavender, tea tree, Thyme,
Lemon Balm, Calendula and Arnica. These herbal remedies are mixed with distilled water to
wash the surface of the skin and used to make a paste to apply on top of the skin: And then
wrapped using pressure bandages for compression. This procedure can help calm the inflamed cite
and reduce any microbial contamination that causes irritation of the skin. This technique has
shown good results. In some sever cases, medical therapy by itself is not enough and performing
surgery or radiation therapy may be more beneficial for effected patients. For example, in cases
where the male genitals have been affected, a reconstructive procedure is done on the penis and
scrotum to remove tumorous and infected tissues. These types of surgery have shown lots of

Customers want to be treated in a friendly manner with honest, straightforward information and
responses. They appreciate a customer service representative who is willing to admit mistakes and
work to correct them. Customers who believe they have been misled stop doing business with the
company. These critical incidents are experiences that make the customer walk away and never
return. They don t complain, they just leave and share the negative service experience with others.
The bad news spreads, leading the organisation to lose more customers and deterring prospective
customers. Critical incidents can include broken promises that annoy and anger customers.
Customers expect to be informed if a promise cannot be fulfilled. Finally, customers expect
understanding and empathy from a customer service representative who is willing to see things
from their point of view, especially when there is a problem. пЃ® Service encounter experience
The service encounter experience determines future levels of service and profit generated by the
organisation. It is where emotions of the service user and the customer service representative meet
in real time; most people judge service quality within the first few moments. Service is often
described as emotional labour , because it demands service personnel to engage their emotions in
their work in a way that a production line role does not. The science of customer service treats
customer satisfaction as a function

Symbolism And Allegory In The Crucible By Arthur Miller
The Crucible, a phenomenon play, written by Arthur Miller is an allegory to the McCarthy
Trials of the 1950s. An allegory is a story with two levels of meaning literal and symbolic. In an
allegory the character, events, and instances( Definition of Allegory R104). Characters like John
Proctor, Abigail William and Hathorne represent Arthur Miller, Joseph McCarthy, and J.Edgar
Hoover. Events like the people who were hung, and people were accused for being witches were
similar to blacklisted and they blamed for being communist. Instances were, when Procter s wife
was pregnant, and Danforth made people choose a side were in comparison to Francis Walter s
wife took a photo with his finance and the communist hide their beliefs. Miller wrote The
Crucible as an allegory to show morality within a society that will accept others, to teach
paranoia results in trauma and to criticize the government way of causing unnecessary fear. In the
allegory several characters represent real people for example, John Proctor is symbolic to Arthur
Miller. Therefore, both were convicted of serious crimes against society. John Proctor stated his
innocence before the court accused him over witchcraft (Miller 198). On the other hand, Arthur
Miller was called before the HUAC and was asked to give information on communist activities(
Navasky 219).These men are seen as noble because they would not bend to the corrupt courts, but
to convince their pursuers each man had to offer up his own wrongdoing. In

The Pros And Cons Of Religious Conversion Therapy
Even though I grew up in an area that embraced the LGBT community, I was not educated about
the inhumane methods used for conversion therapy. I was only knowledgeable about religious
conversion therapy and found the other methods shocking as well. I do know that religious
conversion therapy is still a method used today. There were a couple individuals at my high school
that would try to get members of the school s lesbian and gayclub to attend church with them. The
conversation always started off nice and welcoming and then it would take a sharp turn to, we will
save you type of conversation. Their religious agenda did not jive with me. The average person at
my school would tell them to knock it off and leave them alone. Eventually, it

The Black Colleges And Universities Essay
Double consciousness describes the individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is
divided into several parts, making it impossible to have one unified identity (Understanding
W.E.B DuBois, n.d.). This proposal was brought forth by W.E.B Bois. He believed that African
American s were struggling with these repressed feelings of not knowing who they are; they
could not combine their African background with their now developed American identity. This
concept was developed in 1903, but is still very relevant today; one may be able to relate the
relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities(HBCU) to this theory/ conclusion. At a
Historically Black College or University, an individual has the ability to further their education. I
decide to attend Virginia Union University to gain a better understanding of my history, to bond
with others within the black community, and to profit from the HBCU experience. While attending
a Virginia Union University, I am able to further my education while gaining a better understanding
of my history. HBCU s emerged at the conclusion of the Civil War. The constant debate on the
importance of educating African Americans was at its peak. Whether it was industrial or liberal
education, former slaves knew that it was a vital skill to obtain. Although the government passed
the Morrill Act in 1862, providing each state with a facility for higher learning, African Americans
were not able to attend these white facilities. It was

The Secret of Starbucks’ Success in China
Article Review and Analysis
The Secret of Starbucks Success in China
The current event article I found tells about the successful marketing strategies that the Starbucks
Corporation takes to enter into the market of China, and simultaneously the problems and
difficulties it has in the process of market expanding. The Starbucks Corporation is the global leader
in specialty coffee consumption. Arising almost overnight from a market in Seattle, Washington,
the company today provides quality premium coffees with a superior level of customer service and
at a premium price, around the globe. Starbucks is an excellent example of a company that has
successfully embraced a differentiation focus strategy tailored to providing a high quality,... Show

In addition, due to the higher price, it completely cut off the low consumer groups, which improve
its environment level. Moreover, owing to the brand personality of the third life space , Starbucks
focus more on its service instead of the product. And the article says that the Starbucks require its
operators to identify with the idea and the brand of the corporation, and also emphasizes the
consistency of the operation, discipline and quality (Guang, 2011). Lastly, Starbucks has a unique
promotion idea according to the article, which says that it thinks in service industry, the most
important marketing channel is the branch store itself, not the advertisement (Guang, 2011).
Therefore, Starbucks does not spend lots of money on advertising, instead, it persist in training its
employees to be knowledgeable and enthusiastic, which has become a unique feature of Starbucks
promotion.
However, because Starbucks expands rapidly in the global market in order to pursue the financial
numbers, it causes a reduction of the brand value, which is one of the major problems that
Starbucks Corporation encounters in the process of expanding Chinese market. Furthermore, in
China, there is a large gap between economic strength of the large cities and small cities. Because
the price of Starbucks coffee is too high, therefore it is hard for Starbucks s market development in
the medium and small cities in China. The last major

Northern Economy Vs. Southern Economy
In the beginning of the 1800s, it was kind of easy to tell that the North and the South were not alike
since, in the North, slavery was forbidden, while in the South, it was the most important part of the
community. As years passed by, differences became more evolved, especially when the North
became more industrial, and its economy became a market economy. Though the North and South
both have different economies, and different daily lives, they both have similarities. In the North,
though there were still a few small subsistence farms, industrially mass produced products were the
base of the Northern economy. Money was made in this market economy by selling tons of items

In the North, people determined how long they worked by a clock. Also, when they worked, they
were paid in wages. So pretty much, payment was determined by the hour. In the South it was
different. In the South, payments were determined by how hard a person worked from sunrise to
sunset. If a Southerner worked hard in his job, they had a higher chance of getting more money
than a person who slacks. For the North, living situations, and the environment isn t the best, when
it comes to the Northern cities. In the cities, safety was really bad because the, ...cities expanded
so quickly that municipal services police departments, fire stations, and sanitation works struggled
to keep up. Fire was an ever present danger in the nation s urban areas. ... Mobs and gangs
gathered at local taverns, where young men sometimes attacked each other or turned their violence
against immigrants or nonwhite people. (City danger) Not only are fires and mobs taking over the
city, but disease is too. With the water pollution from feces and more components of an unclean,
over populated environment, sicknesses came frequently and caused a lot of deaths among the
people of the north (Paraphrased Problems). In the south, the general people s environment was far
from city like. Most of the land, due to the fact that the South was mostly agrarian, was full of
continuous farm land. This makes it seem like the air in the South is much cleaner than the air in
the North. Both the north and the south rely on cotton in their daily lives though, the South relies
on cotton as a crop, while the North relies on the cotton for

Queen Victoria was a very fair queen to her subjects. She also built many privileges to her
country. In fact she was 18 when she turned to be the Queen. How she became the queen is the
most interesting question we have asked ourselves. Well after you ve read this I am sure that you
will know a lot about Queen Victoria.
Her early reign started at 6 o clock in the morning, when her mother wake her telling her that one
of the lord s wanted to see her, The lord s tell her that his uncle have died. Her people loved her

childhood she felt very happy that she was the official wife of Prince Albert. She was very happy
that day. She gave birth to her first baby at the age of 18.
Her third child was Princess Alice, She became a grand duchess, Alfred was the fourth he was one
of the greatest dukes in history VictoriaВґs fifth children was a girl, called Helena. Helena married

Louise, following her sister she later became a skilled artist. Victoria had nine children in total 5
girls, and 4 boys. All of the nine children became dukes, and royals with a high education.
We think that she was a great queen, because of the improvement she had toward herself and her
kingdom although she have passed lots of difficult times. We admire her strength and her hard

Whaling Should Be Banned
Aside from radical protests against whaling, other NGOs such as Greenpeace have peacefully
protested the ongoing whaling, by avoiding fleet wars the SSCS partakes in. By 1973,
Greenpeace confronted whaling fleets in response to the decline of blue whales and other species.
In the midst of a peaceful battle to defend the whales, Greenpeacesnapped a photograph of a dead
sperm whale, burdening the public to the IWC in requests for justice. Responding to the incident
in 1979, the IWC established the Indian Ocean Whale Sanctuary as a conservation measure, and in
1982 the IWC declared a Global Moratorium. The desire of the IWC to conserve their image of anti
whalers driven them to act immediately from the accusations over Japan. The establishment of the

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Analysis
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is about the Green Knight coming to a feast at King Arthur s
table, and wanting to challenge the King to a game. The game was a game unlike many others, it
was about beheading. The King accepts the challenge, but while he is holding the axe to swing at
the Green Knight, Sir Gawainsteps in, takes the ax and beheads the Green Knight himself.
The Green Knight s bloody head laid on the ground, but to Sir Gawain s shock, the Green Knight
picked up his head and placed it back on his body. He reminded Sir Gawain that he had accepted
the challenge so, Sir Gawain himself had to come find the Green Knight in one year at his chapel,
so the he can then behead Sir Gawain. By accepting this challenge, Sir Gawain shows courage and

American Influence On Upper Canada
American Influence on Upper Canada: Pre 1812
Upper Canada was created in 1791 to accommodate the Loyalist refugees and land hunting farmers
of the United States after the American Revolution. In addition of the existing two colonies, a third
colony was created by diving the Province of Quebec into Lower Canada which resides in the east
and Upper Canada which resides in the west. The colony was made official by the British
Parliament in the Constitution Act of 1791. Afterwards, the colonies became populated with pre
dominantly American inhabitants and their French speaking counterpart. Consequently, it was
difficult for Upper Canada to merge with these two different cultures, but proven otherwise when

The Civil Law of England was formally introduced into Upper Canada in 1792 (Riddell 165).
Their law greatly differed and was based on their autonomous ego. In Riddell s 1915 journal The
Duel in Early Canada, Blackstone comments the practice of English Civil Law by the Loyalist as
where both parties meet avowedly with an intent to murder thinking it their duty as gentlemen, and
claiming as their right to wanton with their own lives those of their fellow creatures, without any
warrant or authority from a power either divine or human, but in the direct contradiction to the laws
of God and man (Riddell 165). This signifies that the intention of the Loyalist were crude and
irresponsible. They did it out of their egotistic notions. This explains why the political standpoint of
Canada was poor during the War of 1812. The Democratic Republican party did not prepare the
country sufficiently for the war and limited the nation s chances for success (Tucker 3). Canada was
against the participation in the war and wanted to remain neutral. Either way, America threated to
attack and made Canada an unwanted third party victim. The Democratic Republican distrusted
expansive government and feared standing along military establishment (3). The English Civil Law
ended up dividing the country than bring it together. In addition, certain contents of the English

are two different ethnicities represented in the class with thirteen students who identify as white

Goss wrote the objective I can read and write fractions as well as new vocabulary on the board. The
new vocabulary was equal shares, fourths, quarters, halves, one half and one fourth. Mrs. Goss
began the lesson by calling the students to the carpet and asking them to bring their white boards,
which are about 8 ВЅ inches by 11 inches, dry erase markers, and erasers with them. To hook the
students, she had them visualize a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She then used construction
paper cutouts of a square (which was made by my co teacher and myself for an earlier lesson on
two dimensional shapes and repurposed for this lesson) to represent the sandwich. Next, she drew
a line to divide the sandwich in half to share with a student named Nadalie. Mrs. Goss asked if
Nadalie would want the smaller side of the sandwich. Nadalie replied that she did not want the
sandwich because it was not equal.
Next, she taught her students to signs to represent equal and not equal. Equal was represented
by placing one arm parallel to the other arm with a gap of a few inches to separate them. Not
equal was represented by crossing the arms to create an X with the arms and hands. In her next
example, Mrs. Goss then showed the students a construction paper circle, which was to represent
a cheese pizza. She divided it vertically into two equal halves to share with her husband, Mr. Goss.

Tribal leadership changed in 1622 23. Indian attacks killed over 700 colonists and destroyed

Hunger remains a major hardship. Salt water poisoned colonists. A drought and massive fire
destroyed crops and killed all but 60 colonists (Captain John Smith qtd. in Miller, 84 85). Gross
mismanagement has failed to improve living conditions (Kelly). 1609 was labeled the starving

Romeo And Juliet Doomed In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare tells the story of two people in love, both from
wealthy families who hate each other. Romeo comes from the Montague family, while Juliet
comes from the Capulet family. Although the reasoning for the feud between their families is
unknown, it results in many young people killing each other. The story ends tragically with
Romeo and Juliet both killing themselves, but this only happens because of the feud between
their parents. Romeo and Juliet unexpectedly meet during a party and later, once they realize
who the other is and the family they come from, they know the relationship is doomed. After
Juliet figures out that the mysterious man she met at her father s party was Romeo, she says My

No two authors are ever identical, they craft their stories precisely while mixing in their own style
to differentiate them from the others and allow them to stand out. Many respected authors use
literary devices to make the work their own. For instance, well renown author Edgar Allan Poe has
a style that is famous for its unusual usage of the many literary devices to contribute to his Gothic
writings. Poe s styleis bound together with what we see in most of his work such as using diction
to create allegories and allusions, using mood to create suspense, and symbolism to create a
meaning deeper than what our eyes see. To demonstrate an idea through words on a paper takes
a skillful writer, but to use those words to make the story a whole new idea than what is written,
the writer must have a style that is different and flexible such as Poe s. Poe takes a contrastive
path with diction in almost all of his works. Each word he uses is part of an overall view, such as
in the story The Raven , Poe uses vivid verbs and rare words to convey an idea that everything he
has written about is an allegory to the memories of Lenore. Also, one of his other works uses his
word choice to relate the narrator to the Book of Revelations. Poe uses the sentence And then my
vision fell upon the seven tall candles upon the table. , he uses this set of words to relate the
man in the black robes to the Judgement of Man in the Book of Revelations (Pit 1). Poe uses all
the help he can get from his words to compose something that stands out from other published
authors. His usage of allegories and allusions make his stories authentic. Mood plays an
enormous part in a narrative writing. It gives you a feel of the story and what the author is
trying to convey. Poe uses mood to make you feel what the narrator is feeling. Such as in The Pit
and the Pendulum , Poe uses repetition and imagery to create the mood of the story for us to feel
as if we were in the narrator s shoes. In most of Poe s works he uses mood and centers the whole
story around it to appeal to the audience. In Cask of Amontillado the narrator and Fortunato go
down to the catacombs of his ancestors. While getting lower into the catacombs, Poe starts to use the

Carol Ann Duffy Valentine
Examine the way Carol Ann Duffy presents relationships in Valentine . Refer to other poems about
relationships in your answer.
This essay will be exploring the use of language and imagery in the poem Valentine by Carol Ann
Duffy to emphasise certain emotions within the text. This poem refers to the dark side of love and
relationships several times, for example; Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips. This creates a
different atmosphere to the stereotypical love poems, which are known for their mention of red
roses and satin hearts. Although the title gives us an impression of a clichГ© filled poem, as we
continue reading, the poem seems like more of a warning than an encouragement to involve oneself
in relationships and commitment, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of the detached word Lethal in the final stanza suggests that this is the core to the emotion
of love, and the surface to the surrounding layers is red roses and satin hearts.
We can compare Valentine to Sonnet 18 written by William Shakespeare and Sonnet 43 by
Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Despite having to perhaps read more deeply into Sonnet 18 to
understand its purpose, we can see from the first line; Shall I compare thee to a summer s day?
that it is of a romantic genre. This line can also be linked to Romeo and Juliet perhaps suggesting
that Shakespeare has emotional attachments to the message he is attempting to articulate, as he
uses this motive in more than one of his pieces. Whilst the opening greets us with a warm
welcome and the perception that it will continue to express a contented vibe, a turning point of
But... is introduced. It then goes on to use immortality as a comparison to relationships, for
example; Nor shall Death brag thou wander st in his shade. This mention of demise can also be
associated with the plot of Romeo and Juliet supporting the point made earlier. Giving the
inanimate object of Death a capital letter is a use of personification that proposes the idea to the
reader that death is living, and it is always something to be feared.
Sonnet 43 also grabs the reader s attention with a question that is later answered. The use of the

Selective Writing Style Of The Blind Man
The authors selective writing style is through first person and we are told the story through the
narrator. He is married to his wife, who they are both not given names throughout the story. The
wife has an old friend, who is coming down for a visit due to the tragic event of his wife s passed
due to cancer. Throughout the story, the narrator struggles with insight of different lifestyles,
prejudiced opinions towards the blind man, and attempting to secure a way to adjust his life for a
favor his wife inquired. The narrator will soon realize that be needs to maintain an open mind to
other people s lifestyles and needs to sees struggle through a different perspective. The limited
world that the protagonist lives in is based off a very stereotypical mindset that the authors shows to
the audience. The ignorance that the narrator shows is due to the lack of interaction that he has
ever had with people who suffer from different disabilities; let alone being blind. Some of these
limitations that the narrator had could have been caused by the relationship that his wife and the
blind man had. They communicated by sending tapes to one another. They did this through
everything, even after the narrator s wife attempted suicide from swallowing pills and capsules and
washing them down with a bottle of gin. They had a very strange but powerful relationship. It is
blatantly stated throughout the story that the narrator is not a fan of the blind man. From the start

Tactical Decision Making Essay
The modern fire service is much in part driven by individual opinion of the appropriate strategies
and tactics to be used during given emergency incidents, many of which are stimulated by
inaccurate information, the lack of scientific evidence or the historical means of operation within
the department. In recent years, various scientific studies have been conducted by entities such as
the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Underwriters Laboratories to present
factual scientific data that is useful for making appropriate strategic and tactical decisions on the
fireground. According to Smith (2017), Strategy should be viewed as overall goals or what you
want to accomplish (p. 106) on the fireground. Furthermore, he defines tactics in his writings as

Decision making models that are widely accepted in the fire service play a significant role in the
implementation of strategies and tactics on fire grounds across the country. Scientific studies

discussed are useful to the fire ground operator when implemented and used appropriately. After
operating for some years using the RECEO VS model for both strategic and tactical decision

guides the user through a sequence of tactical objectives but also allows the user to utilize critical

Tommy John Surgery
Baseball players and fans call it Tommy John surgery, after the pitcher who was the first to have
the surgery 29 years ago. By any designation, it is one of the major advancements in sports
medicine in the last quarter century. Technically it is a ulnar collateral ligament replacements
procedure. Pitching overhand is a particularly stressful motion; the strain it puts on a player s
joint is commonly injurious. Pitchers such as Kerry Wood, Matt Morris, John Smoltz, Mariano
Rivera, Tom Gordon, and Eric Gagne all have a four inch scar on their pitching arms as evidence
of this career saving surgery. These players typically perform as well, if not better, after the
operation and have stronger arms, with radar gun readings to match.... Show more content on

Usually this tendon will be harvested from the leg that is not used as the plant foot in the pitcher
s delivery. The removal of either of these tendons has a negligible effect on function. Then, the
surgeon opens up the elbow. In the original procedure, Frank Jobe used a large incision to get
exposure to the joint. For an idea of the size of this incision, hold your right arm out from your
body with your palm pointed upwards. With your other hand, feel along the inside of the elbow
until you can find what feels like a hard round nub. That s the proximal end of your ulna bone.
The incision would have taken place along the inside of the arm, beginning several inches above
the elbow and ending several inches below. As Dr. Akizuki explains, In order to get exposure to
the joint you used to have to detach the entire flexor attachment [the muscles that flex the elbow
you can feel those muscles by feeling along the incision site]. You used to just fillet that open. Once
inside the elbow the unlar nerveis recognized, lifted out, and moved to provide greater access to the
joint. This is the funny bone nerve and it runs inside the ulnar groove. With the muscle separated
and the ulnar nerve safely out of the way, the surgeon would then locate the damaged ligament.
First scraping out the damaged tissue, then the next step is to drill tunnels in the

prosecutor, and detective. He was the highest power in his district and was in charge of many
things. He was in charge of the town, land administration, the tribunal, the bureau for the
collection of taxes, the register office, and the public order in the district. Magistrates had to
have great moral strength, intellectual power, and refined literati also trained on Chinese letter

barely gained any support since these skills were signs of a good leader. The Magistrates were
almost miniature monarchs of their own lands. Even though whatever they say is not law, they
are able to convict and torture people until they listen. Judge Dee took everything under his
control form the detective work to sentences. He used lieutenants and constables to help out, but
most work was done single handedly. No one else I the district has more power than him. A few
magistrates in the book even had their own private army for example; the magistrate in Turnip

By allowing free college tuition the ambition gap would become more achievable to students
making them thrive in less stressful schooling environments knowing their college tuition wouldn t

Another way free college tuition would benefit our country is by allowing the education gap at the
bottom to no longer set a standard on education students receive. Thomas L. Friedman author of
The World Is Flat , states, So it made it possible for relatively wealthy people to organize into self
taxing districts. And that meant that wealthy people, by associating with each other, could tax
themselves at relatively low rates and still produce very high per capita per student school budgets,
because of their bigger homes and higher property tax assessments. (360). Funding plays a major
role in how many schools are educated and at what level by levels of poverty, but by allowing free
college tuition students can look at more schools that offer some of the best of education.
In order to minimize the numbers gap of students trying to thrive in earning a degree, free college
tuition can allow students to pursue more degrees in less sought after jobs. Friedman states,

Female Repression of the 19th Century as Seen Thru the Two...
For centuries man has created this patriarchal society in which women have been treated as the
lesser entity, having no sense of self being or worth. These feelings led women to feel repressed in
their everyday life. It was in the late nineteenth century when literary writers started to expose this
female repression. Guy de Maupassant and Kate Chopin clearly express definitive examples of
female repression in their stories, The Necklaceand The Story of an Hour. During this time period,
women s role in society was that of a submissive, powerless position. They often relied solely on
their husband for direction, allowing the husband to make decisions and take lead no matter what.
In the story of The Necklace, Maupassant illustrates these... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The only thing that women could take ownership of was their beauty. She danced with
intoxication, with passion, made drunk by pleasure, forgetting all, in the triumph of her beauty,
in the glory of her success, in a sort of cloud of happiness composed of all this homage, of all this
admiration, of all these awakened desires, and if that sense of complete victory which is so
sweet to a woman s heart (Maupassant 63). In this passage, Mathilde was basting in her own
beauty because it was of her own. During this time many women were forced into marriage,
resulting in a great unhappiness. Both Kate Chopin and Guy de Maupassant state this lack of
joy that was often experienced everyday by women. It was only yesterday she had thought with
a shudder that life might be long (Chopin 68). If was as if Mrs. Mallard was sickened by the idea
that her life and the way it was, would continue forever. Maupassant portrays Mathilde s
frustration in her marriage with the frequent use of the word suffered in relationship to her higher
class wants and desires. She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all
the luxuries. She suffered from the poverty of her dwelling, from the wretched look of the walls,
from the worn out chairs, from the ugliness of the curtains (Maupassant 59). These two stories

Causes And Disadvantages Of The Middle Ages
The middle ages were a time of great change and political upheaval. With the advent of barbarians
migrating from all across the continent to better their lives and to receive the protection of the

country wide goal. With the help of some truly great leaders like Charlemagnewe have the countries

the Middle Ages, starting with the decline of Rome, the Franks, and most importantly by

leaders to rule and second of all an insurgence of those they considered barbarians. A barbarian

the Huns invasion of tribes in the far east causing them and others to flee. That led the various
Gothic tribes to cross the Danube River looking for protection from the Huns that they hoped could

Protest Methods Of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a human rights activist who fought for the independence of
India from British Rule. His revolutionary protest methods inspired the likes of Martin Luther King
Jr. and others. However, many despised Gandhi s methods. One night, Gandhi, after shaming the
city of Delhi, was heading to a prayer meeting and it was there that Nathuram Godse fired three
point blank shots at Gandhi, killing him on the spot. Gandhi s assassination was justified because
he employed controversial protest methods, he defied British Rule, and he combined conflicting
religions which caused confusion in his community. Many may say that Gandhi did many great
things, but those positives are outweighed by the negatives.
To begin with, Gandhi continuously employed controversial and illegal methods to protest the
injustices that his people faced. For example, Gandhi led a satyagraha due to the prohibition of salt
exportation to India from countries other than Britain. According to This Day in History, Gandhi
set out from Sabarmati with 78 followers on a 241 mile march to the coastal town of Dandi on
the Arabian Sea. There, Gandhi and his supporters were to defy British policy by making salt
from seawater (paragraph 3). This action was literally illegal. Similarly in 1920, America banned
the production and distribution of alcohol. However, many individuals decided to make and
distribute alcohol or have it imported. They were called bootleggers. Gandhi s actions were

people before they know their past. Angie Thomas is able to get this across to readers not only
through Starr, but also characters such as her father Maverick, her friends from school, and even
Officer Cruise, the officer who killed Khalil.
Stereotypes in the novel are one of the main causes for Khalil s death. The officer had killed
Khalil because he had automatically assumed Khalil was a threat to him. Officer Cruise treated
both Khalil and Starr with disrespect at the time of the arrest because they are African American.
When Khalil began to move in order to ask Starr if she was okay, the Officer assumed he was
reaching for a weapon because he had already formed an opinion about Khalil based on his skin

How Governments Spend Tax Dollars
SPECIAL TAXING DISTRICTS
Citizens expect government to provide high quality, low cost services through efficient use of
public tax dollars. However, local governments with tight budgets and a multitude of needs vying
for public funds often struggle to improve or even maintain services within their boundaries. Budget
shortfalls may result in non essential programs like parks, libraries and community colleges
becoming severely underfunded or defunct, despite strong objections by citizens. County and city
governments throughout the United States have increasingly responded to these difficulties by
implementing special taxing districts (Turk, 2004). Special taxing districts are separate government
entities, which typically administer a single service within a defined geographical boundary.
Some districts provide a new service, while others acquire responsibilities once held by general
purpose governments. The services they provide are broad, ranging from essential functions like
fire protection, highways, and hospitals, to more obscure tasks of mosquito abatement and upkeep
of cemeteries (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). Since 1952, special taxing districts in the United States
have increased over 200%, with 38,266 special districts comprising 40% of local government in
2012. During the same time, municipalities have increased slightly, while the number of townships
and school districts both decline (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). The structural changes in local
government have been

Plato s System Of Metaphysics
Adrian Farrales
Introduction to Philosophy
Metaphysics
11/6/14
Plato s system of metaphysics revolves around the concept of Eidos, or forms. A form is the
perfect and truest instance of a particular idea. In the world, we find particular instances of each
form. For example, a certain pen is a particular instance of the form of pen. Every single pen in
the world contributes to the form of pen. This contribution of particulars to the forms is called
mathexis in Greek, or simply, participation. The participation of all particulars help to define and
derive common characteristics of the form. Using the pen example, all pens function as a writing
utensil, usually contain some form of ink, and generally are cylindrical. Every pen is somewhat
imperfect and has flaws of some sort. Regarding ontology, these forms are the highest level of
reality and the purest form of existence, while the particulars are imperfect and cheap
imitations.Regarding our senses, Plato believed that the world we live in, that is the world of
particulars, is an illusion because the most real world would be the world of the forms. Thus our
senses are not accurate and our sense perceptions are merely copies of the forms. Plato
exemplifies this in the allegory of the cave, portraying a false sense of reality. Plato believed that
these forms are innate to human beings, as we were born with them. By doing philosophy, we
undergo a process of recollection of these forms, ultimately

An allegory is a story with two levels of meaning literal and symbolic. In an allegory the character, events, and instances( Definition of Allegory R104). Characters like John Proctor, Abigail William and Hathorne represent Arthur Miller, Joseph McCarthy, and J.Edgar Hoover. Events like the people who were hung, and people were accused for being witches were similar to blacklisted and they blamed for being communist. Instances were, when Procter s wife was pregnant, and Danforth made people choose a side were in comparison to Francis Walter s wife took a photo with his finance and the communist hide their beliefs. In the allegory several characters represent real people for example, John Proctor is symbolic to Arthur Miller. Therefore, both were convicted of serious crimes against society. John Proctor stated his innocence before the court accused him over witchcraft (Miller 198). • 6. The Black Colleges And Universities Essay Double consciousness describes the individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is divided into several parts, making it impossible to have one unified identity (Understanding W.E.B DuBois, n.d.). This proposal was brought forth by W.E.B Bois. He believed that African American s were struggling with these repressed feelings of not knowing who they are; they could not combine their African background with their now developed American identity. This concept was developed in 1903, but is still very relevant today; one may be able to relate the relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities(HBCU) to this theory/ conclusion. At a Historically Black College or University, an individual has the ability to further their education. I decide to attend Virginia Union University to gain a better understanding of my history, to bond with others within the black community, and to profit from the HBCU experience. While attending a Virginia Union University, I am able to further my education while gaining a better understanding of my history. HBCU s emerged at the conclusion of the Civil War. The constant debate on the importance of educating African Americans was at its peak. Whether it was industrial or liberal education, former slaves knew that it was a vital skill to obtain. Although the government passed the Morrill Act in 1862, providing each state with a facility for higher learning, African Americans were not able to attend these white facilities. It was ... The Secret of Starbucks’ Success in China Article Review and Analysis The Secret of Starbucks Success in China The current event article I found tells about the successful marketing strategies that the Starbucks Corporation takes to enter into the market of China, and simultaneously the problems and difficulties it has in the process of market expanding. The Starbucks Corporation is the global leader in specialty coffee consumption. In addition, due to the higher price, it completely cut off the low consumer groups, which improve its environment level. Moreover, owing to the brand personality of the third life space , Starbucks focus more on its service instead of the product. And the article says that the Starbucks require its operators to identify with the idea and the brand of the corporation, and also emphasizes the consistency of the operation, discipline and quality (Guang, 2011). • 20. The Literary Style Of Edgar Allan Poe No two authors are ever identical, they craft their stories precisely while mixing in their own style to differentiate them from the others and allow them to stand out. Many respected authors use literary devices to make the work their own. For instance, well renown author Edgar Allan Poe has a style that is famous for its unusual usage of the many literary devices to contribute to his Gothic writings. Poe s styleis bound together with what we see in most of his work such as using diction to create allegories and allusions, using mood to create suspense, and symbolism to create a meaning deeper than what our eyes see. To demonstrate an idea through words on a paper takes a skillful writer, but to use those words to make the story a whole new idea than what is written, the writer must have a style that is different and flexible such as Poe s. Poe takes a contrastive path with diction in almost all of his works. Each word he uses is part of an overall view, such as in the story The Raven , Poe uses vivid verbs and rare words to convey an idea that everything he has written about is an allegory to the memories of Lenore. Also, one of his other works uses his word choice to relate the narrator to the Book of Revelations. Poe uses the sentence And then my vision fell upon the seven tall candles upon the table. , he uses this set of words to relate the man in the black robes to the Judgement of Man in the Book of Revelations (Pit 1). Poe uses all the help he can get from his words to compose something that stands out from other published authors. His usage of allegories and allusions make his stories authentic. Mood plays an enormous part in a narrative writing. It gives you a feel of the story and what the author is trying to convey. Poe uses mood to make you feel what the narrator is feeling. Such as in The Pit and the Pendulum , Poe uses repetition and imagery to create the mood of the story for us to feel as if we were in the narrator s shoes. In most of Poe s works he uses mood and centers the whole story around it to appeal to the audience. In Cask of Amontillado the narrator and Fortunato go down to the catacombs of his ancestors. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of the detached word Lethal in the final stanza suggests that this is the core to the emotion of love, and the surface to the surrounding layers is red roses and satin hearts. We can compare Valentine to Sonnet 18 written by William Shakespeare and Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Despite having to perhaps read more deeply into Sonnet 18 to understand its purpose, we can see from the first line; Shall I compare thee to a summer s day? that it is of a romantic genre. This line can also be linked to Romeo and Juliet perhaps suggesting that Shakespeare has emotional attachments to the message he is attempting to articulate, as he uses this motive in more than one of his pieces. Whilst the opening greets us with a warm welcome and the perception that it will continue to express a contented vibe, a turning point of But... is introduced. It then goes on to use immortality as a comparison to relationships, for example; Nor shall Death brag thou wander st in his shade. This mention of demise can also be associated with the plot of Romeo and Juliet supporting the point made earlier. Giving the inanimate object of Death a capital letter is a use of personification that proposes the idea to the reader that death is living, and it is always something to be feared. Magistrates had to have great moral strength, intellectual power, and refined literati also trained on Chinese letter and arts. Without any of these skills, the magistrate would have failed his job. He would have barely gained any support since these skills were signs of a good leader. The Magistrates were almost miniature monarchs of their own lands. Even though whatever they say is not law, they are able to convict and torture people until they listen. Judge Dee took everything under his control form the detective work to sentences. He used lieutenants and constables to help out, but most work was done single handedly. No one else I the district has more power than him. A few magistrates in the book even had their own private army for example; the magistrate in Turnip Pass had a garrison to protect the area from criminals. Magistrates are supposed to be truth seeking men. Judge Dee is obviously truth seeking because he tries to see why the husband died in The Strange Corpse even though no one filed a complaint, he did this for righteousness, which is looked for in ... • 32. Female Repression of the 19th Century as Seen Thru the Two... For centuries man has created this patriarchal society in which women have been treated as the lesser entity, having no sense of self being or worth. These feelings led women to feel repressed in their everyday life. It was in the late nineteenth century when literary writers started to expose this female repression. Guy de Maupassant and Kate Chopin clearly express definitive examples of female repression in their stories, The Necklaceand The Story of an Hour. During this time period, women s role in society was that of a submissive, powerless position. They often relied solely on their husband for direction, allowing the husband to make decisions and take lead no matter what. In the story of The Necklace, Maupassant illustrates these... In this passage, Mathilde was basting in her own beauty because it was of her own. During this time many women were forced into marriage, resulting in a great unhappiness. Both Kate Chopin and Guy de Maupassant state this lack of joy that was often experienced everyday by women. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long (Chopin 68). Learning and preserving the past became a priority for the first time ever as a country wide goal. With the help of some truly great leaders like Charlemagnewe have the countries and historical artifacts we know today. Barbarian migrations had major effects on Europe, during the Middle Ages, starting with the decline of Rome, the Franks, and most importantly by Charlemagne. The decline of the Roman empirewas caused by two things, one a lack of capable leaders to rule and second of all an insurgence of those they considered barbarians. A barbarian being anyone who wasn t Roman, but in this case specifically the Huns who came from the East as well as the Goths who lived around the empire in the outskirts and further. • 36. Protest Methods Of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a human rights activist who fought for the independence of India from British Rule. His revolutionary protest methods inspired the likes of Martin Luther King Jr. and others. However, many despised Gandhi s methods. One night, Gandhi, after shaming the city of Delhi, was heading to a prayer meeting and it was there that Nathuram Godse fired three point blank shots at Gandhi, killing him on the spot. Gandhi s assassination was justified because he employed controversial protest methods, he defied British Rule, and he combined conflicting religions which caused confusion in his community. Many may say that Gandhi did many great things, but those positives are outweighed by the negatives. To begin with, Gandhi continuously employed controversial and illegal methods to protest the injustices that his people faced. For example, Gandhi led a satyagraha due to the prohibition of salt exportation to India from countries other than Britain. According to This Day in History, Gandhi set out from Sabarmati with 78 followers on a 241 mile march to the coastal town of Dandi on the Arabian Sea. There, Gandhi and his supporters were to defy British policy by making salt from seawater (paragraph 3). This action was literally illegal. Similarly in 1920, America banned the production and distribution of alcohol. However, many individuals decided to make and distribute alcohol or have it imported. They were called bootleggers. New York s iconic World Trade Center fell victim to hijacked commercial airlines filled with innocent people. In 102 minutes, the world was forever changed by one of the worst attacks the United States has ever experienced. Many factors made the terrorist attacks of September 11th a day that is permanently etched into the hearts and minds of Americans. Nineteen radicals linked to the Islamic terrorist group al Qaeda gained control over four airplanes and carried out attacks against targets in the United States on 9/11. (History.com Authors) Their leader, Osama Bin Laden, and his followers viciously opposed the United States. In al Qaeda s opinion, the United States was an infidel because it was not governed in a manner consistent with the group s extremist interpretation of Islam. Starr Carter lives in Garden Heights, a neighborhood filled with gangs, when one of her best friends Khalil is shot by the police, she is quick to know he had been killed because of the racism that exists in our world. Throughout the novel, Starr is constantly trying to show the world why Khalil died in order to get justice for his death. Through different characters, the author is able to convey the message of one should not form opinions on someone or something based on stereotypes. Throughout the novel, some characters struggle with judging people before they know their past. Angie Thomas is able to get this across to readers not only through Starr, but also characters such as her father Maverick, her friends from school, and even Officer Cruise, the officer who killed Khalil. Stereotypes in the novel are one of the main causes for Khalil s death. The officer had killed Khalil because he had automatically assumed Khalil was a threat to him. • 41. How Governments Spend Tax Dollars SPECIAL TAXING DISTRICTS Citizens expect government to provide high quality, low cost services through efficient use of public tax dollars. However, local governments with tight budgets and a multitude of needs vying for public funds often struggle to improve or even maintain services within their boundaries. Budget shortfalls may result in non essential programs like parks, libraries and community colleges becoming severely underfunded or defunct, despite strong objections by citizens. County and city governments throughout the United States have increasingly responded to these difficulties by implementing special taxing districts (Turk, 2004). Special taxing districts are separate government entities, which typically administer a single service within a defined geographical boundary. Some districts provide a new service, while others acquire responsibilities once held by general purpose governments. The services they provide are broad, ranging from essential functions like fire protection, highways, and hospitals, to more obscure tasks of mosquito abatement and upkeep of cemeteries (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). Since 1952, special taxing districts in the United States have increased over 200%, with 38,266 special districts comprising 40% of local government in 2012. During the same time, municipalities have increased slightly, while the number of townships and school districts both decline (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). • 42. Plato s System Of Metaphysics Adrian Farrales Introduction to Philosophy Metaphysics 11/6/14 Plato s system of metaphysics revolves around the concept of Eidos, or forms. A form is the perfect and truest instance of a particular idea. In the world, we find particular instances of each form. For example, a certain pen is a particular instance of the form of pen. Every single pen in the world contributes to the form of pen. This contribution of particulars to the forms is called mathexis in Greek, or simply, participation. The participation of all particulars help to define and derive common characteristics of the form. Using the pen example, all pens function as a writing utensil, usually contain some form of ink, and generally are cylindrical. Every pen is somewhat imperfect and has flaws of some sort. Regarding ontology, these forms are the highest level of reality and the purest form of existence, while the particulars are imperfect and cheap imitations.Regarding our senses, Plato believed that the world we live in, that is the world of particulars, is an illusion because the most real world would be the world of the forms. Thus our senses are not accurate and our sense perceptions are merely copies of the forms. Plato exemplifies this in the allegory of the cave, portraying a false sense of reality. Plato believed that these forms are innate to human beings, as we were born with them. By doing philosophy, we undergo a process of recollection of these forms, ultimately ...
