Aristotle on Courage Essay
In the 1939 movie classic, The Wizard of Oz, the Cowardly Lion is on a quest for the wizard to give
him courage. He is afraid of everything and anything. However, in Aristotle s Nicomachean Ethics,
Aristotle believes that courage is possible for all individuals. To gain courage one must have the inner
qualities that will guide the courageous. The most important part of these qualities is to come to terms
with death itself. Also, there are views of courage that are falsely perceived because they appear to be
parallel with one another; nevertheless they are still very different.
One must have many different inner qualities in order to achieve courage. First, one must not be
concerned with death; death can be a beautiful thing. Aristotle ... Show more content on

Excessive fearlessness and exceeding confidence, nor exceeding fear and lack of confidence
(deficiency), does not make a courageous man. Aristotle talks about the courageous person, and that
person acts with the awareness of the concept of honor and expresses it in a manner that is
proportionate, knowing exactly what to really fear. Many different things can be frightening; one must
decipher these things the greater fear from the lesser for the sake of the beautiful. (Aristotle 49, Sachs)
To correctly aim at what is beautiful, one actively achieves moral virtue. The beautiful is the purest
form of beauty and Aristotle states that beautiful action comes from a beautiful character and aims at
beauty. Virtue aims at enduring fears and feeling confident with respect to rationality. Aristotle claims
that the courageous man may fear things that not everyone feels the need to fear, but he will endure
and overcome these fears and feel rationally confident.
To become a courageous individual however, it is crucial that one be able to comprehend the fact of
death. Dying is a beautiful thing when dying for defense and honor while facing real dangers that puts
one at risk. Aristotle writes, One would call courageous a person who is unafraid in the face of a
beautiful death. (48 49) This shows that Aristotle believes that the courageous person needs to stand
firm on their values or beliefs no matter what the repercussions are. If one so

A Experiment On Separation And Purification Methods
This experiment introduces separation and purification methods used in research quite frequently.
These methods include hot vacuum filtration and recrystallization to purify a crude sample of
acetanilide containing two impurities. Recrystallization is a very common method that is used to
purify solids. This process dissolves a crude solid with impurities in a mildly boiling solvent, and
cooling down the mixture afterwards for crystals to reconstruct themselves in solution. This method
allows impurities to separate and remain in solution as precipitate or remain uniform in solution.
Solids are more soluble in hot solvents than in cold ones, allowing maximum dissolution for proper
separation and subsequent crystallization to occur. After purifying the compound, the melting point is
determined using the Mel Temp technology to compare to the written melting point to see how pure
the sample truly is. The proper steps of recrystallization include selecting a solvent that fits the
characteristic of all the components, water in this experiment. Then, dissolving a crude sample in the
chosen solvent (at or close to the solvent boiling point), forming solid in the solution as cooling takes
place, using vacuum filtration to isolate the purified solid, ridding the crystals of all impurities through
drying. In this experiment, recrystallization allows purification of 150 mg of crude acetanilide. Hot
vacuum filtration is a process used. The process requires using a filter flask, Pasteur

How Did Industrialization Affect People In The 18th Century
The past is never dead.It s not even past. William Faulkner ,The world as we know it is based on our
past. Events that have been occurring for multiple years, still have effects on our society today.
Without the puzzle pieces of past events we wouldn t have all the advancements with technology and
industries that we have today. History has taught us how to be successful in certain situations and how
to learn from our mistakes. Many of these events are similar to the industrial revolution. All of these
turning points have become important aspects of our current society. The way industrialization affected

that most types of chromatography don t rely on upon shading. A few sorts of chromatography are
generally utilized, among which are paper chromatography, slender layer chromatography or TLC,
fluid chromatography, gas chromatography, and superior fluid chromatography or HPLC.
Chromatography is useful to the point that some structure can be found in most logical research

Talk Show Ellen Degeneres
When times are difficult and people feel as if there is no possible way they could ever be happy again,
one of the best ways to overcome that feeling of uselessness is by doing something you love to do.
One way some individuals believe is the best way to overcome difficult times is through comedy. One
person who believes making people laugh can help ease her pain is Ellen Degeneres. In her talk show
Ellen when she was upset about her dog being taken away from another family, she said, I m a human
being and I have bad days and I have sad days but when I walk out here and when ya ll cheer and
when you re here to dance and here to laugh and I know I make people happy, it changes my mood. I

She said that she found her calling when she performed a makeshift comedy routine about a person
that was telling a story while eating. Her performance at the party was noticed and she started getting
requests from local coffeehouses to perform for them as well. Ellen landed her first solid gig in 1981
as emcee at Clyde s Comedy Corner in the French Quarter which happened to be the only comedy
club in New Orleans at the time. Her reward for her shows at the Corner...was being named the
funniest person in America in 1982 by a talent scout for the cable channel Showtime. Degeneres first
gig had made a huge impact on her comical career because soon enough Ellen found herself touring
the United States in a Winnebago bus. But being named the Funniest person in America has its
downside. One of these downsides was having people try to humiliate you in front of a crowd. Ellen
recalled a time when she was working a club and the previous performer had turned the crowd against
her before she even took the stage. The front row was a bunch of guys who actually stood up, turned
their chairs around, and faced the other way, Degeneres said. Instead of giving up she ended up hiring
an agent and then entered into a contest at the San Francisco Comedy Festival where she came in
second! Her fame kept on rising between being called onto the Tonight Show and other talk shows.

The State of the Federal Budget
What is the current state of the Federal Budget? According to Shultz (2002), individuals and
businesses fund the Federal Government through personal income and payroll taxes. With the
unemployment rate at 8.1% as of January 1st, 2014 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014), created an
overall shortage in both individual and business taxes. Segal (2010) points out that America has not
had a balanced budget since 2001. In 2008 the US national debt held by foreign holdings was at 48%,
while the public debt was at $5,461 billion (Segal, 2010; National priorities org, 2014). The national
debt last reported was on October 2013 and had reached 17 trillion dollars, the same amount as the
debt ceiling (National priorities Project, 2013). How might the state of the budget impact the problem
that your bill is addressing, and impact the likelihood of passage of the specific bill you are
examining? Incorporate the material on the budget from the Segal text, Chapter 9 and Schultz text,
Chapter 3, in your discussion about the relationship between the budget and the issue you are focusing
on. H. R. 2604 looks to place money back into the federal budget while protecting family unity.

Senior managers were adamant about project scope, so changes will be unlikely here.
Approve more funds to hire more resources, unclear how many will be needed to gain this amount of

Allow the delivery to be delayed, this will ease the strain, (personal and mental) on resources, but will

3. What is (are) the critical path(s) in the project? What is the level of risk in completing tasks on the

Analyzing the critical path, there is a high level risk as it runs parallel to itself, more than one task at a

Oligarchy Vs Autocracy
The type of government that will fit on my island would be democracy, because it is a system of the
whole population of the state. I chose democracy because I would want my island to have laws similar
to the ones of the United States. The reason why I didn t choose autocracy or oligarchy is because
autocracy is a system of one government which means one person makes laws and has all the power to
control how things work on the island. Oligarchy is a system in which the groups are small and have
little little ideas for the island. The island will need large groups with leaders that will be in charge of
certain things on the island this is why I think having democracy is better than the other two. You will
have more groups to help you organize

Essay about Roanoke Colony
The Lost Colony
Jamestown is thought by most of to be the first colony in the New World but this is not the complete
truth. Jamestown is considered our first successful colony; however it was not the first attempt at a
colony. There were a few attempts to colonize the New World before Jamestown and one in particular
that was the most mysterious is the Roanoke colony, also known as the Lost Colony. The colony got
this name because the colonists that were there vanished mysteriously with no trace of what happened.
Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his half brother Sir Walter Raleigh were both veterans of earlier colony
efforts. In 1578 Gilbert managed to acquire a patent from Queen Elizabeth that would let him have

Reluctant to give up, he turned to private investors to finance another expedition. In 1585 his cousin,
Sir Richard Grenville, was picked up to be the leader of a group to establish a colony on Roanoke.
With him were 100 soldiers, craftsmen, and scholars to try and settle the colony. Under direction of
Ralph Lane, the colony was doomed from the beginning.
The settlers had arrived late in the season which made it almost impossible to plant crops and supplies
were depleting and to make things worse, Lane, a captain alienated the surrounding tribes and killed
their chief over a stolen cup. After Ralph Lane and his men had had enough, they left the settlement
and their fort not knowing that only a week later a supply ship from England had arrived. Finding the
island deserted, the leader left fifteen men behind to hold the fort and went back to England for
reinforcements.
In England, on January 7, 1587, a document allowing a government body to be created was signed and
passed. This body was named the Governor and Assistants of the City of Roanoke in Virginia. Jon
White, a skilled illustrator and map maker, was appointed Governor. On May 5, 1587 Raleigh decided
to try again and boarded 117 men, seventeen women, and nine children for a more permanent
settlement and sent them to the New World.
The original plan was to settle at Chesapeake Bay, but on July 22, 1587 the captain, Simao Fernandes,

Comparison Of Truth In Oedipus The King And Hamlet
Sophocles and William Shakespeare in Oedipus the King and in Hamlet, illustrate the theme of the
destructiveness of truth through their main characters, who both pursue the truth leading to their own
demise. In Sophocles s Oedipus the King, the protagonist, Oedipus displays characteristics of being
ignorant and persistent, which results in his own self destruction. While in William Shakespeare s
Hamlet, the protagonist, Hamlet, displays characteristics of being cunning and hesitant, which also
lead him to his own self destruction. Each go about the truth differently, but have the same end result.
These characters utilize their characteristics to attempt to find out the truth and seek vengeance. The

Comparison Of Diet And Soda Reaction
Mentos and soda reaction has been a fun experiment done by people across the world.
Yes, it is a easy project you can do. You can do it by yourself or with friends but, do you know the
science behind it? Do you know if it is a physical reaction or chemical reaction? The reaction of soda
and Mentos causes a fun explosive outcome but, why? When you drop the the Mentos in the diet soda
it causes carbon dioxide bubbles to form really fast. Then the bubbles form until it forms a geyser. Not
only the bubbles form the sticky and foamy reaction. The ingredients from the Mentos mixed with the
sugar from the diet soda causes the soda too have a lower surface tension. It is hard for bubbles to

According to Mental Floss, this is their explanation of why diet soda works better. Diet sodas produce
a bigger reaction than non diet sodas because aspartame lowers the surface tension of the liquid much
more than sugar or corn syrup will. You can also increase the effect by adding more surfactants to the
soda when you add the Mentos, like adding a mixture of dishwasher soap and water ( Why Do Diet
Coke and Mentos React? Mental Floss). Why is it a Physical reaction? It is a Physical reaction
because of Nucleation. What causes the reaction of soda and Mentos slow or stops the reaction? To
slow down the experiment a person would have to make sure that the carbon dioxide must escape
from the soda. If that person does not have carbon dioxide in the soda the Mentos will not react to
cause a fun and exciting Physical reaction( education.com. Mentos and Diet Coke Experiment |

Introduction There are many governmental agencies within the healthcare system. One of most
interesting and heart wrenching agencies is a local governmental agency called Terrell State Mental
Hospital. This agency is well known in the state of Texas for its carefree healthcare. They have a
longstanding relationship with the families of its patients and are a major contributor to the city of
Terrell s financial windfall. They produce over ten million a year for the city of Terrell, which allows
this city to take care of its mental inpatients and make sure they have the best treatment possible.

Programs Available
This hospital is operated under the direction of the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental
Retardation. They offer their services to people within a twenty two county, 14,622 square mile area
including Bowie, Dallas, and Kaufman Counties. According to the Chamber of Commerce (2009),
their services are offered to children 6 to 12 years of age, adolescence ages 12 to 18 and adults.
Programs include acute care, an intensive behavioral program, medical services, forensic care for
inmates of state correctional institutions intermediate care, a cottage program for adult life skills and a
research center.
Local Agencies vs. National and State Agencies The three of these agencies have different aspects of
treatment for disease. The national and state agencies usually focus on locating and making the public

Communication Is A Complex Aspect Of Human Life
Communication is a complex aspect of human life that upon closer investigation gives one a deeper
understanding of what messages individuals are truly attempting to convey. There are four different
channels through which signals and cues send messages from sender to receiver and vice versa. Those
channels are the following; auditory, visual, tactile, and scent channels. Three of the four channels are
non linguistic channels that demonstrate that a large portion of communication occurs through non
linguistic means. Individuals are consistently using these four channels in everyday interactions with
one another. Humans minds and bodies have been shaped by natural selection to send a variety of
verbal and non verbal signals. A signal is intentional and has been evolved to produce a certain
reaction. Signals are honest because they are linked to one s genes. Due to the wide reach signals have
in one s everyday life a broad analysis of signals would be ineffective for this analysis. Therefore, this
analysis will focus on the role signals play in courtship. One will explore a total of five different
sources of empirical evidence in order to gain a deeper understanding of why individuals may have
evolved to produce and react to courtship signals. One will attempt to demonstrate that individuals
have evolved to produce and react to courtship signals in order to be able to determine a potential

novel is suitable for young adults between the ages of twelve and sixteen because this novel gives
them an insight to the contemporary segregation issues that they face in life. During this age group

compassion, and love. Where evils quest is to carry out complete genocide against everything good.
Within the fight, the battle is finished by a choice, a choice being allowed to conquer. This battle is
fought in every human being. It should be said the choice between good and evil is a free choice.
Swimming through what seems like a dark murky lake, I ve searched for a sliver of light, and too
often come up discouraged, disappointed, and desperate. Sadly, people are left deserted trying to latch
onto the sliver of light. Believing in the choice for good, I was sadden to encounter a sort of hatred I
did not think to ever witness. Being a hopeless romantic and consistently looking at life as if it is a
poem ready to be written, my expectations for my act of kindness were at a high peak. I ve often had a
fascination with the homeless, and at times, even a sort of envy towards them. To be able to float
freely, unbound by society s confinements. When deciding I wanted to sit down, eat, and talk with a
homeless person, I looked forward to the mounds of understanding I hoped to gain. But upon

The Breakfast Club and Teen Identity
The movie The Breakfast Club takes viewers on a comedic tour of the ups and downs of adolescence.
The Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes, focuses on the events that unfold between five very
different high school students during a Saturday detention. Even though the movie was shot in the
1980 s the characters portrayal is still relatable in a way to a lot of people today. Director John Hughes
takes us on a comedic ride with what seems like another typical teen movie while still portraying a
few life lessons along the way and exposing some truths behind stereotyping. Anyone who has ever
been a high school student can probably find some way to relate to the characters in the film. The
movie revolves around 5 students who for various reasons have been sent to Saturday detention by
principle Vernon. The principle asks each of the students to write a one page paper on who they think
they are. As the day progresses, we see the teens begin to bond with each other and find out about
each other and themselves. The film begins by introducing each of the five characters. John Hughes
gives us five common archetypes with each of his characters including: a jock, a popular princess, a
geek, a criminal, and basket case. These generic characters make it easier for the audience to relate to
one of the characters in the film. Andy, the jock, is the generic high school athlete, or so it seems.

Essay about My Greatest Accomplishments
What s mine is yours. Having lived a year in a student hostel I understood this phrase was the best to
describe my first year student life. We shared everything: all of bright spots, all of difficult moments,
all of the books and all of the cakes. My roommates are my best friends now and I trust them as I

One of my goals is to transform Kazakhstan into popular tourist destination. There are a lot of exciting

Ensuring Access to Higher Education
In today s modern societies one of the major concerns is to ensure increased access to higher
education, and to include members of formerly under represented social groups and categories, such
as women, ethnic and racial minorities as well as people who live in distant, rural disadvantaged areas

Analysis Of Dead Poets Society
A) Overview
The 1989 movie, Dead Poets Society, features a group of boys attending a private boarding school, the
Welton Academy. The central conflict of the movie stems from the clash between educational
approaches. The movie uses the educational conflict as an engine to propel the plot and to explore and
develop the characters.
The Welton Academy s education style is most definitely traditional. The school s educational
approach is revealed by Headmaster Nolan three minutes into the movie as he states the Four Pillars of
Welton Tradition. Honor. Discipline. Excellence. The word Tradition is literally engraved in the
schools pillars. This is similar to Hirsch s theory of Cultural Literacy a conservative theory of

Keating about 12 minutes into the movie he whispers in the boys ears the words carpe diem which in
Latin means seize the day. Mr. Keating embodies a teaching pedagogy of equality between teacher and
student in the classroom, teaching students to think independently and critically, and challenge
conventional thought. The boys seize the day by creating a club called The Dead Poets Society. Mr.
Keating s progressive pedagogy thus inspires a radical club. This is the first step in the boys move
from conservatism to progressivism and ultimately to a radical crisis. The club s radicalness peaks
when a member, Charlie Dalton demands that girls be allowed to attend Welton Academy. He causes a
full campus meeting where he mocks Headmaster Nolan by holding a telephone out and instructing
him that God has been calling and that he should answer. As one could expect, the conservative
headmaster does not respond well. Headmaster Nolan interviews each student individually until one
student, Richard Cameron, turns in the rest of the club to save himself from expulsion. This
demonstrates how a new approach can threaten more established norms, followed by a retaliatory
backlash.
The final major scene of the movie occurs after one of the boys, Neil Perry, defies his father by acting
as Puck in A Midsummer s Night Dream. This radical step leads his oppressive conservative father to

Thought Provoking Illustrations in The Illustrated Man by...
Thought Provoking Illustrations in The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury Ray Bradbury first

Each of the Illustrations carries with it a moral standpoint, all of which are important to Bradbury. The
Veldmakes a point that is still highly relevant today Although technology is important, it is not so
important that it should get in the way of family life. It is an incredible piece of foresight by the
author, as this is possibly the greatest problem that we face socially today. Nearly 75% of households
are connected to the Internet, with around 80% possessing computers. This is the root of many
problems, especially obesity, as the Internet and computer games are the primary contributors to
unhealthy sedentary lifestyles. Bradbury exaggerates the effects that the technology has for impact,
with the parents dying as a result of relying so much on their house s technological equipment, and not
bothering to communicate with other human beings. In Kaleidoscope, Bradbury explores not only the
concept of death, but also his belief that we must make the most of our lives when we have the
chance, because at the end, the only things we are left with are our memories. He sets it in open space
to illustrate this nothingness and loneliness, but the point that he makes is just as relevant here on
Earth. Carpe diem is shown in

Regulating Herbal Supplements Essay
Regulating Herbal Supplements
One of the major parts of everyday life is also a major wildcard in the medical field. It does not have
as many rules and restrictions as synthetic drugs have on the market and are generally said to be safe
until proven otherwise, which is very hard to control system. Herbal supplements should be tested and

give the safe amount to the people who need it, so the number of accidents regarding this would

Since 1994 when herbal medicines became more widespread the Food and Drug Administration has
had multiple issues with pesticides germs, and other foreign substances in these products.
Furthermore, they have also had the trouble of manufacturers disclosing or including ingredients that

I Stand Here Ironing, By Tillie Olsen And Everyday Use By...
The two short stories, I Stand Here Ironing by Tillie Olsen and Everyday Use by Alice Walker shows
two mothers being concerned about one of their daughter and question how their daughters have
turned out to be. The authors show this by using multiple symbols to convey the families relationship.
By this, the authors use the iron, quilt, and clock all to connect how each symbol shows a significant
meaning in the family.
In I Stand Here Ironing, Olsen conveys the symbolic meaning of an iron, which connects to Walker s
symbolism for the quilt in Everyday Use. Both these objects are ironically associated with a mother in
general. Furthermore, in these short stories, Olsen represents the iron as a mother s ability to smooth
out the wrinkles in her daughter s life. By this, the mother states, I stand here ironing, and what you
asked me moves tormented back and forth with the iron . In other words, she throws all her painful
emotions and guilty of not being a mother to her daughter Emily into the iron. In addition, the iron
tries to destroy these emotions that are a representation as wrinkles . Also, as the narrator is ironing
back and forth, the action is used as a flashback as where she went wrong in raising Emily. Similarly,
Walker shows how ironically a quilt is like a mother, in where both share a legacy and are also used
for comfort. In this short story, a mother tries to reconnect with her daughter through their heritage,
but later realizes that she cannot give

The Blind Side Movie Sociology
Chap Clark the author of Hurt: Inside the World of Today s Teenagers, describes abandonment as a
sociological phenomenon whereby youth have been forced to create their own social structure, the
world beneath and clusters. They answer difficult questions by themselves in their search for identity.
There can be many reasons for why adolescences could be abandoned by adults, some of them
include; adults are in their own world and are dealing with their own levels of stress, or the adults
think that since the adolescence is pushing away, that must mean that they want their own space and
the adult backs away from the youth instead of getting closer to them. Abandonment is a serious issue
that everyone should be aware of and how much it can affect people. In the movie The Blind Side
there are examples of both abandonment and also adults helping the main character, Big Mike or

If an entity has a recent fair value calculation for a reporting unit, it also should include as a factor in
its consideration the difference between the fair value and the carrying amount in reaching its
conclusion about whether to perform the first step of the goodwill impairment test.
2. Once it is established that the first step of the goodwill impairment test must be completed, the
following steps must be taken according to FASB codification section 350 20 35.4. The first step of
the goodwill impairment test is to, compare the fair value of a reporting unit with its carrying amount,

The outcomes of the first step of goodwill impairment test will be either that the carrying amount of

In the event that the carrying amount of the reporting unit is greater than zero, then the second test of

His 3 papers, which later became famous as the trilogy were published in the Philosophical magazine
in July. Later in the year He revised Rutherford s nuclear structure to Max Planck s quantum theory
and created the Bohr model of the atom. He revolutionized the theory of electrons traveling in orbits
around the atoms nucleus. He also announced the idea that an electron could drop from a higher
energy orbit to a lower one, in the progress also emitting a quantum of discrete energy. This theory
became known as the old quantum theory. The trilogy s acceptance was dur to it s ability to explain
the phenomena which blocked other models ,and predicted the results that were then verified by

The Fall Of Death, Destruction And War
In the wake of death, destruction and war came the renaissance. The renaissance was an era of cultural
rebirth that swept across Europe during the 14th to 17th century . This era marked the time in which
man returned to their classical learning and values of ancient rome and greece and began to change
their attitude towards religion (history.com staff). While the renaissance is in the past it continues to
live on throughout many different fields of art, theories and movements, however, paintings tend to be
most symbolic of what the renaissance era was. The Renaissance era was faced with the hundred years
war, the black death, classicism and the issues of religion such as the distancing from church and
humankind s search for the meaning of their existence and how life works. With these ongoing issues
renaissance paintings were often depicting images of war, death, the values from ancient greece and
rome and they became more secular as well. Additionally, the artist began to develop new techniques
such as linear perspective, realism, depth, symmetry, and classicism. Artists also began to make use of
light, detail anatomy, depict nature and focus on individuals instead of groups of people. Leonardo da
Vinci, is one of the most famous painters and at 15 was an apprentice to Andrea del Verrocchio
(history.com staff). He was also an inventor, scientist, doctor and philosopher and has been nicknamed
the renaissance man (history.com staff). Da vinci is an artist whose

How Does Margaret Atwood Use Feminism In The Penelopiad

One of her books is The Penelopiad. Atwood allows the voiceless Odysseus s wife, Penelope, to reveal
her side of the story as well as the twelve maids who were hung to be weaved in through poetic

She reveals feminism through the use of double standards in gender roles and in different culture
settings, colloquial language to show readers Penelope s side of the story branched off of the Odyssey,
and the application of different genres in the chorus line showing relationships from the genre to the
concept of the maids chorus lines. The use of double standards serves a purpose in Atwood s book
because it shows readers the difference in Penelope s time period to the 21st century and the gender
roles, for an example Odysseus and Penelope. The double standards of the twelve maids execution
reveal that it was common for men to rape women during that time period. As for the double standards
in relevance to Odysseus and Penelope, Odysseus was involved with many women but expected
Penelope to remain faithful. The analysis of double standards found in this book shows Margaret
Atwood s feminist view. In The Penelopiad, Margaret Atwood explores the concept of words using
colloquial language in which Penelope is given the voice to narrate her own story. She allows
Penelope to speak of her oppressed life as a woman during her time period and what happened while
Odysseus was away through her perspective. By the effective use of colloquial language, readers

Dualism Of Romanticism
The way Blicher portrays the family of the manor is idealistic, which aligns with the dualism of
Romanticism. The dualism of Romanticism puts forth that the ideal should be placed above the reality
(Monrad, 09 26 16, sl. 11). The manor is described as a peaceful place where it seems as if it were
newly white washed and decorated and the trees in the garden have taken on a beautiful shade of pale
green and everyone looks so content (Blicher 11). Miss Sophie can be related to the Platonic triad: the
good, true and beautiful (Monrad, 09 26 16, sl. 11). She has been associated with the word angel

When the maid gave birth to a son, she mentions that the father was a lace pedlar, but the whole house
knows very well who the guilty one is (Blicher 21). Even though the harmonious environment was
maintained, in reality, the environment is chaotic that is filled with adultery. This is revealed when
Jens and Miss Sophie s relationship comes into light. This corresponds to Blicher s theme of God
being distant and the human world is dominated by spite and sexuality. (Monrad, 10 21 16, sl. 3). Miss
Sophie only wanted to live the rest of her life with the one she loved, but God seemed to not have
listened to her prayers. This also applies to Morten as he has wanted to end his life multiple times
throughout the story, but God never answered to his prayers. Since Blicher was a clergyman, some
Christian elements are visible within the short story. The last entry in Morten s diary further reveals
how the Christian religion is tied to the short story. This entry consists of some passages from the
Bible to indicate how Morten s fate is related to God. He feels that he has wasted his life asking God
what has become of these years these many thousands of days? Where are the delights of my youth?
(Blicher 32). In this entry, Morten reflects on his life on how his tender soul shone just as brightly and
merrily as the moon , but has turned as dark as the moor due to his encounter with Miss Sophie

The Characteristics Of The Humanist Movement In The Iliad
There are many unknowns regarding who Homer was. His date of birth and death are still a mystery to
modern day historians, ranging anywhere between the twelfth to eighth century BCE. As to where he
was born, no one knows the exact location. Although there are many mysteries revolving around
Homer s life, there is one known fact: his epics changed history forever. Homer s epics are one of the
only few artifacts historians have to learn about Homer, which can reveal a lot if read carefully. After
reading the Iliad, it became clear that Homer was an early Humanist, one who possibly shaped or
inspired the Humanist movement in Classical Greece during the fifth and fourth century BCE. The
Humanist movement during Classical Greece glorified the human body, which can be shown through
the many sculptures and paintings created during the era. These sculptures resembled the ideal human
body, the body every Greek should strive to achieve. The ideal body type was that of an athlete (PBS,
2017). There are hints of this image of the ideal body in Homer s Iliad. The section of the text that
indicates that Homer can be an early humanist is when he writes, Here was the ugliest man who ever
came to Troy. Bandy legged he was, with one foot clubbed, both shoulders humped together, curving
over his caved in chest, and bobbing above them his skull warped to a point, sprouting clumps of
scraggly, woolly hair (Homer 750 BCE, 250 255). In this description of Thersites, Homer never calls

Life Review Interview
Aminata Conteh
Professor Sandra Hill Williams
SOWK 505 8 18 2012
Introduction
When I saw Ms. Mary Walker, the word Old does not even cross my mind. I was very surprised when
I found out her age. It seemed strange that a woman of this age could show so much youth, little
wrinkles, mobility, and did not cough every ten seconds as an indicator of good health. Identifying her
as an individual in the 68 + age range seemed misleading but a glance at her salt and pepper afro
provided some proof. A natural inquisitiveness in me wanted to know her secret. Luckily, I was given
an assignment that appeared to be perfectly suitable to ask all the right questions A Life Review. I had
seen Ms. Walker several times in my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As grandmother, she enjoys the position of the matriarch. She has estimated forty grandchildren and
about twenty great grandchildren. Although she has not met all of grandchildren, she is hoping that
sometime during the remainder of her life she will have the opportunity to build relationships with all
of them.
Social/Historical/Environmental Influences
Ms. Walker has lived through several historical events. She recalls the World War II as an event that
affected her early childhood. Her parents received rations of food and clothing from the federal
government, which limited their material possessions. She stated this was the time she first realized
that she was poor. Like other African Americans, the Jim Crow laws affected almost every aspect
social of life during pre civil rights movements. She can remember instances of racism where she was
served food through the back door, using segregated public bathrooms, and reading old school books
that came from white schools. She noted that America has come a long way from the days of Jim
Crow. The vindication of Barack Obama as the first black president of the United States is proof of
America s progression in race relations.
Global Assessment
The support of the family is the most positive aspect of family life. The rise of single parent homes
has produced a negative change in family life stating that single mothers are too often bearing the
burden of raising

Questions On The Action Challenge Essay
Action Challenge: Answer the following questions as briefly as possible (think 300 words or less) o
Tell us about a time when you worked in customer service, didn t know how to handle a situation, and
worked hard to figure out what to do. Share the steps you took and the outcome. When I worked as a
Student Technology Consultant, there was a student who came to the front desk in straight panic
mode. She was working on an important assignment in the computer lab, and it seemingly went
missing before her eyes. I was immediately empathetic, because of course I ve been there, and told her
I would do all I could to help her recover the document. First, I used prior knowledge. Admittedly, it
was limited, and none of my methods did the trick. Then, I went online and searched for solutions.
(She was freaking out, and my intuition told me that she actually did lose her assignment, so I told her
if I couldn t recover her document I would write a note explaining the situation to her professor. Of
course, some professors wouldn t care, but I figured it may help some if she needed an extension, etc.)
I tried about three or four methods, before I finally found a solution that worked (searching temp
folders on the drive). I was honestly almost as happy as her to find a solution. She was grateful, and
said she appreciated my patience and thoroughness. Before she left I gave her some tips for backing
up her work regularly...and luckily she didn t need that note. o Briefly share with

The History Of Politics In Texas
With every state comes a specific and distinctive history of politics, and, more often than not, a brief
understanding of the cultural changes that occurred throughout the years. Texas has one of the most
interesting shifts: an almost clean cut shift from a Democratic, or blue , state, to a Republican, or red ,
state, after nearly 100 years of Democratic dominance. This is comparable to the state of Virginia,
which also saw Republican representation after Democratic dominance for nearly 50 years. However,
where Texas remains mainly Republican today, Virginia is an accurate embodiment of a two party
state . With this being said, that doesn t mean Texas will stay this way. While the Lone Star state still
votes red and has Republican ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This campaign s goal was to unite white Virginian Democrats so they could work together to prevent
desegregation in public schools. Many schools, including an entire school system, were shut down
between 1958 1959 to prevent integration. Most of the laws catered to this massive resistance were
overturned by state and federal courts within in a year, but some of the anti integration ideology
continued to persist in Virginia for many years. Byrd ran for governor of Virginia in 1925, and thus the
Byrd Organization was born. Byrd serves as governor until 1930, and then was elected to the United
States Senate in 1933, where he served until his retirement in 1965. For nearly 40 years, Byrd
familiarized himself with the courthouse cliques , otherwise known as the state officers in each county.
With every relationship he created, a level of respect was given to Byrd, giving him unofficial power
over these officers. While these courthouse cliques still made recommendations for certain candidates
for statewide offices, Byrd only considered them after careful consultation . It became obvious that no
candidate in Virginia would succeed without his stamp of approval. Byrd remained in power by
greatly limiting the spread of power throughout the state; he amended the state constitution to reduce
the number of statewide elected officials to just three, including the governor, the lieutenant governor,
and attorney general, and also rescheduled the

Pros And Cons Of Recidivism Rates
As of the end of 2015, there were 1,526,800 prisoners in the United States being held in state or
federal correctional facilities. Every year, thousands of people are released from jail or prison. Most
people who are incarcerated today will eventually be released. Most of these individuals return to a
life of freedom without the skills they need to survive. Recidivism rates suggest that many of these
individuals will re offend within six months of release, and most will reoffend within three years. This
is not because they re bad people; it s because they are trying to thrive in a system that sets them up to
fail.
Given grim post release arrest rates, it s hard to understand why our government is not doing more to
help those transitioning from incarceration to life on the outside. It doesn t make sense for taxpayer
dollars to go towards incarcerating people over and over it seems that the money could be better spent
improving rehabilitation programs for inmates. Increased funding for programs aimed at helping
former inmates transition to life on the outside would likely lead to better outcomes for those
individuals, fewer crimes being committed, and lower recidivism rates. One would hope that our
society would want to see people who are incarcerated serve their time, get rehabilitated, get released,
and become productive members of their communities.
It is well known that former inmates face significant challenges upon being released. Some of these
challenges include

The Mere Nature Of The Soliloquy By William Shakespeare
The mere nature of the soliloquy is to enter the thoughts of a specific character It is a simple idea. It
would make sense that Shakespeare employs this literary method to reveal something about Hamlet s
own internal struggle in any given soliloquy. Hamlet is an conflicted and self disparaging individual
who often finds himself toiling with his own ideas and movies frequently. But the first soliloquy is
used to reveal to the audience that Hamlet is furious at his mother and Claudius, even before he learns
his father was supposedly murdered by the new king. The fury toward Claudius and Gertrude alone is
enough to make Hamlet even contemplate suicide, Or that the Everlasting had not fix d/ His canon
gainst self slaughter (Shakespeare, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By comparing corruption to a rotting plant, Shakespeare manages to insert a large, overarching theme
into a few sentences of a soliloquy.
While there is micro juxtaposition in the sentences and metaphors in the soliloquy, the first passionate
soliloquy provides a striking contrast to the artificial dialogue that Hamlet must exchange with
Claudius in court. The juxtaposition of tone emphasizes how rules and customs of the royal court that
foster corruption. Shakespeare also juxtaposes spiritual things and earthly things, O, that this is too too
sullied flesh would melt,/ Thaw and resolve itself into dew (10). Hamlet is disgusted by the earthly
flesh he has to live in and wishes to be something pure and spiritual like dew. The earthly things to
hamlet, like soil and weeds, are gruesome. To Hamlet, the world is corrupt and so are the people in it.
Shakespeare juxtaposes the earthly with the divine in order to show how Hamlet, while he wanting to
be pure, is trapped on earth by some obligation, such as a canon gainst self slaughter (10). The ban on
suicide is also a symbol for Hamlet s obligation to stay in the royal court until things are set right.
Allusion is also implemented to emphasize the corruption that is slowly taking over the Royal court.
Shakespeare has Hamlet compare his father, his mother, and his uncle all to different Greek and
Roman mythological figures. Hamlet firsts makes the comparison of

Google s Strategy For My Personal Leadership Style
In the article Google Grows on People: Bottom up Leadership and Minimalist Management Inspire
Innovation the author looks at the latest developments in management across the globe to find the
most practical implications (Elsevier, 2013). Looking at the success and rapid growth Google has
exspirenced they cen see how they have changed how buisness management should be handled.
Researchers asked Google directly to find what their secret was and interviewed twenty eight
employees in various Google sites across the globe. They asked what the key factors were into making
google the inovative empire that it is. The results showed that most people who were interviewed saw
individuals by their talents and diversity (Elsevier, 2013). Leaders where to set the vision and
direction for their teams and make the teams role clear (Elsevier, 2013). By creating a culture, seeing
individuals and building great leadership, Google has been able to build an environment of flexibility
and freedom (Elsevier, 2013). Taking Google into concideration for my personal leadership style can
seem a bit dauhnting at first, but once it is broken down to seeing the individuals and creating room
for growth and innovation it can put it into a better perspective. Within the teaching setting I can take
care to make sure I see all of my students for who they are as individuals and how God designed them
uniquely. Focusing on the individual can create a space that allows growth in the person God created

Allan Bakke Pros And Cons
Allan Bakke was a man who applied to the University of California at Davis. He was a white male,
more specifically, who tried to get in the medical school. He was denied twice, in 1973 and 1974. He
was angry because other people, with lower grade point averages, were admitted to the program. But
these people were admitted through the special program. The special program was made for the
purpose to increase representation of disadvantaged students. The screening process involved the
candidate s indication of what race they were. They could say they were a minority group, or if they
were economically and/or educationally disadvantaged. Then the special admissions committee would
see if they did meet the criteria. These candidates did not have to meet the 2.5 grade point average, nor
where they compared to the candidates in the regular admissions program. ... Show more content on

He filed suit in the Superior Court of Yolo County, California. His claim was that the University of
California s special program violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. It
also went against Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because it excluded him on the basis of race.
The University defended themselves by saying all the pros of the special admissions program. They
said it fought against the discrimination so common in their society. They thought they could reverse
the historical statistics that showed minors were discriminated against in medical admissions and
professions. Also, they said their program would increase the number of doctors who practice in less
popular or undeserved communities. The last reason was that they thought the student body in a whole
would educationally benefit. They said the students would work better if the body is ethnically and
racially

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Longest War By Rebecca Solnit
For my rhetorical analysis, I read Rebecca Solnit s essay The Longest War, which shed a light on the
unequal treatment of men and women and the violence that women face throughout their lives, and
around the world.
In analyzing this essay, I looked at the context and the substance of Solnit s essay. In terms of context,
I looked primarily at her use of examples, and where these examples come from. First off, Solnit
conveyed messages of gender inequality and violence from around the globe, rather than just
throughout the United States. Additionally, she creates ties between the Civil Rights Movement and
the women s rights movement that is currently happening to emphasize the importance of the events to
the readers. This strategy is also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I realized that the abundance of examples and statistics that she used were a big part of this, because
they provide facts that are hard to contest. I used this as the basis for forming my thesis. After this, I
went through the essay again and found locations that tied in well to this main idea. This was my
method for developing support. I looked at the essay and the context of it and tried to tie in what
Solnit was saying with how I felt about the essay itself. I took this information altogether and saw how
Solnit was proving her points and fulfilling her purpose.
My strengths in this essay, I believe, are in not just analyzing the information that Solnit provides, but
in also analyzing the effect that this information has on the readers. My final body paragraph details
both the logical and the emotional responses that Solnit brings up in her audience. Additionally, I feel
that I was successful in tying all of the analysis that I supply back to Solnit s purpose in writing the
essay. It is easy to look at the context and the substance of an essay, but to relate it all back to the
author s goal in writing it is what shows that you have a fuller understanding of the work.
In writing this essay, I started out by trying to analyze far too much of what Solnit had written. Along
with the substance and the context of the essay, I wanted to get deeper into her organization and other
smaller details of her writing. In The Longest War, Solnit

Self-Recognition And Child Development
Child development in general is something most people do not really think of. Even if someone has
children they do not really think about it unless something seems wrong with their child. Ever since
this class I never really thought too much about how we all develop. A lot of things we learned in this
were actually surprising to me but I could only choose one. I chose to look at an experiment on self
recognition because I found it very interesting that the researchers used a mirror to understand how the
infants would react. In the self recognition experiment the researchers put the infants in front of a
mirror and tried putting different things on them to see if they could recognize themselves. Putting a
child in front of a mirror to see if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Child development is not as easy as that. Infants need to see themselves multiple times in the mirror to
develop self recognition. I was surprised with what I learned because it made me start to think about
development in general not only with self recognition. Development is not something that happens
overnight. This study proves it because an infant will not realize themselves the first time they look in
a mirror they will need to get used to the things around them and realize they are looking at the other
objects so the person they are looking at has to be themselves. This is an important study because is an
infant does not have self recognition there could be something wrong with them. All stages of
development are important because the sooner doctors find out their development is behind the sooner
the problem can be fixed so the child will not be behind in their stages of

  • 2. Aristotle on Courage Essay In the 1939 movie classic, The Wizard of Oz, the Cowardly Lion is on a quest for the wizard to give him courage. He is afraid of everything and anything. However, in Aristotle s Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle believes that courage is possible for all individuals. To gain courage one must have the inner qualities that will guide the courageous. The most important part of these qualities is to come to terms with death itself. Also, there are views of courage that are falsely perceived because they appear to be parallel with one another; nevertheless they are still very different. One must have many different inner qualities in order to achieve courage. First, one must not be concerned with death; death can be a beautiful thing. Aristotle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Excessive fearlessness and exceeding confidence, nor exceeding fear and lack of confidence (deficiency), does not make a courageous man. Aristotle talks about the courageous person, and that person acts with the awareness of the concept of honor and expresses it in a manner that is proportionate, knowing exactly what to really fear. Many different things can be frightening; one must decipher these things the greater fear from the lesser for the sake of the beautiful. (Aristotle 49, Sachs) To correctly aim at what is beautiful, one actively achieves moral virtue. The beautiful is the purest form of beauty and Aristotle states that beautiful action comes from a beautiful character and aims at beauty. Virtue aims at enduring fears and feeling confident with respect to rationality. Aristotle claims that the courageous man may fear things that not everyone feels the need to fear, but he will endure and overcome these fears and feel rationally confident. To become a courageous individual however, it is crucial that one be able to comprehend the fact of death. Dying is a beautiful thing when dying for defense and honor while facing real dangers that puts one at risk. Aristotle writes, One would call courageous a person who is unafraid in the face of a beautiful death. (48 49) This shows that Aristotle believes that the courageous person needs to stand firm on their values or beliefs no matter what the repercussions are. If one so ... • 3. A Experiment On Separation And Purification Methods This experiment introduces separation and purification methods used in research quite frequently. These methods include hot vacuum filtration and recrystallization to purify a crude sample of acetanilide containing two impurities. Recrystallization is a very common method that is used to purify solids. This process dissolves a crude solid with impurities in a mildly boiling solvent, and cooling down the mixture afterwards for crystals to reconstruct themselves in solution. This method allows impurities to separate and remain in solution as precipitate or remain uniform in solution. Solids are more soluble in hot solvents than in cold ones, allowing maximum dissolution for proper separation and subsequent crystallization to occur. After purifying the compound, the melting point is determined using the Mel Temp technology to compare to the written melting point to see how pure the sample truly is. The proper steps of recrystallization include selecting a solvent that fits the characteristic of all the components, water in this experiment. Then, dissolving a crude sample in the chosen solvent (at or close to the solvent boiling point), forming solid in the solution as cooling takes place, using vacuum filtration to isolate the purified solid, ridding the crystals of all impurities through drying. In this experiment, recrystallization allows purification of 150 mg of crude acetanilide. Hot vacuum filtration is a process used. The process requires using a filter flask, Pasteur ... Communication Is A Complex Aspect Of Human Life Communication is a complex aspect of human life that upon closer investigation gives one a deeper understanding of what messages individuals are truly attempting to convey. There are four different channels through which signals and cues send messages from sender to receiver and vice versa. Those channels are the following; auditory, visual, tactile, and scent channels. Three of the four channels are non linguistic channels that demonstrate that a large portion of communication occurs through non linguistic means. Individuals are consistently using these four channels in everyday interactions with one another. Humans minds and bodies have been shaped by natural selection to send a variety of verbal and non verbal signals. A signal is intentional and has been evolved to produce a certain reaction. This novel has many themes and morals that fit perfectly with it, but the main one is to show how our society segregates people based on their looks and appearance. I believe this novel is suitable for young adults between the ages of twelve and sixteen because this novel gives them an insight to the contemporary segregation issues that they face in life. Trying to consider the natural condition of people, being whether it good or evil, I ve come to believe good exists as equally as evil. And as one resists the other, both are on a conquest to defeat the other. Goods quest is to help; scattering kindness, compassion, and love. Where evils quest is to carry out complete genocide against everything good. Within the fight, the battle is finished by a choice, a choice being allowed to conquer. This battle is fought in every human being. It should be said the choice between good and evil is a free choice. Swimming through what seems like a dark murky lake, I ve searched for a sliver of light, and too often come up discouraged, disappointed, and desperate. Sadly, people are left deserted trying to latch onto the sliver of light. Believing in the choice for good, I was sadden to encounter a sort of hatred I did not think to ever witness. Being a hopeless romantic and consistently looking at life as if it is a poem ready to be written, my expectations for my act of kindness were at a high peak. I ve often had a fascination with the homeless, and at times, even a sort of envy towards them. To be able to float freely, unbound by society s confinements. Even though the movie was shot in the 1980 s the characters portrayal is still relatable in a way to a lot of people today. Director John Hughes takes us on a comedic ride with what seems like another typical teen movie while still portraying a few life lessons along the way and exposing some truths behind stereotyping. Anyone who has ever been a high school student can probably find some way to relate to the characters in the film. The movie revolves around 5 students who for various reasons have been sent to Saturday detention by principle Vernon. The principle asks each of the students to write a one page paper on who they think they are. As the day progresses, we see the teens begin to bond with each other and find out about each other and themselves. The film begins by introducing each of the five characters. John Hughes gives us five common archetypes with each of his characters including: a jock, a popular princess, a geek, a criminal, and basket case. These generic characters make it easier for the audience to relate to one of the characters in the film. Andy, the jock, is the generic high school athlete, or so it seems. ... Nearly 75% of households are connected to the Internet, with around 80% possessing computers. This is the root of many problems, especially obesity, as the Internet and computer games are the primary contributors to unhealthy sedentary lifestyles. The two short stories, I Stand Here Ironing by Tillie Olsen and Everyday Use by Alice Walker shows two mothers being concerned about one of their daughter and question how their daughters have turned out to be. The authors show this by using multiple symbols to convey the families relationship. By this, the authors use the iron, quilt, and clock all to connect how each symbol shows a significant meaning in the family. In I Stand Here Ironing, Olsen conveys the symbolic meaning of an iron, which connects to Walker s symbolism for the quilt in Everyday Use. Both these objects are ironically associated with a mother in general. Furthermore, in these short stories, Olsen represents the iron as a mother s ability to smooth out the wrinkles in her daughter s life. By this, the mother states, I stand here ironing, and what you asked me moves tormented back and forth with the iron . In other words, she throws all her painful emotions and guilty of not being a mother to her daughter Emily into the iron. In addition, the iron tries to destroy these emotions that are a representation as wrinkles . Miss Sophie can be related to the Platonic triad: the good, true and beautiful (Monrad, 09 26 16, sl. 11). She has been associated with the word angel multiple times as mentioned before. When the maid gave birth to a son, she mentions that the father was a lace pedlar, but the whole house knows very well who the guilty one is (Blicher 21). Even though the harmonious environment was maintained, in reality, the environment is chaotic that is filled with adultery. This is revealed when Jens and Miss Sophie s relationship comes into light. This corresponds to Blicher s theme of God being distant and the human world is dominated by spite and sexuality. (Monrad, 10 21 16, sl. 3). Miss Sophie only wanted to live the rest of her life with the one she loved, but God seemed to not have listened to her prayers. This also applies to Morten as he has wanted to end his life multiple times throughout the story, but God never answered to his prayers. Since Blicher was a clergyman, some Christian elements are visible within the short story. The last entry in Morten s diary further reveals how the Christian religion is tied to the short story. This entry consists of some passages from the Bible to indicate how Morten s fate is related to God. He feels that he has wasted his life asking God what has become of these years these many thousands of days? Where are the delights of my youth? (Blicher 32). In this entry, Morten reflects on his life on how his tender soul shone just as brightly and merrily as the moon , but has turned as dark as the moor due to his encounter with Miss Sophie (Blicher 33). • 38. Anne Bradstreet s Pre-Civil War Poetry When reading Pre Civil War works, readers may have a preconception that the works may be difficult to decipher and view them as archaic; however this is clearly not the case. The works are written in modern English, and therefore, readers can still understand the overall, general concept even if they cannot decipher each and every word. When reading the Salinas and Cherokee creation stories, Columbus s Letter, and the works of Samuel de Champlain, the works can be read with ease. The overall concept/ message may be difficult to understand at times, but to read each of the works can be done effortlessly. Although the majority of the works assigned this week are easy to understand and read, Anne Bradstreet s poetry may be considered a tad more difficult to comprehend, because her poetry is written in a quatrain and the language gives off a flowerily ... • 39. The Characteristics Of The Humanist Movement In The Iliad There are many unknowns regarding who Homer was. His date of birth and death are still a mystery to modern day historians, ranging anywhere between the twelfth to eighth century BCE. As to where he was born, no one knows the exact location. Although there are many mysteries revolving around Homer s life, there is one known fact: his epics changed history forever. Homer s epics are one of the only few artifacts historians have to learn about Homer, which can reveal a lot if read carefully. After reading the Iliad, it became clear that Homer was an early Humanist, one who possibly shaped or inspired the Humanist movement in Classical Greece during the fifth and fourth century BCE. The Humanist movement during Classical Greece glorified the human body, which can be shown through the many sculptures and paintings created during the era. These sculptures resembled the ideal human body, the body every Greek should strive to achieve. The ideal body type was that of an athlete (PBS, 2017). There are hints of this image of the ideal body in Homer s Iliad. The section of the text that indicates that Homer can be an early humanist is when he writes, Here was the ugliest man who ever came to Troy. Bandy legged he was, with one foot clubbed, both shoulders humped together, curving over his caved in chest, and bobbing above them his skull warped to a point, sprouting clumps of scraggly, woolly hair (Homer 750 BCE, 250 255). Life Interview Review Essay Life Review Interview Aminata Conteh Professor Sandra Hill Williams SOWK 505 8 18 2012 Introduction When I saw Ms. Mary Walker, the word Old does not even cross my mind. I was very surprised when I found out her age. It seemed strange that a woman of this age could show so much youth, little wrinkles, mobility, and did not cough every ten seconds as an indicator of good health. Identifying her as an individual in the 68 + age range seemed misleading but a glance at her salt and pepper afro provided some proof. A natural inquisitiveness in me wanted to know her secret. Social/Historical/Environmental Influences Ms. Walker has lived through several historical events. She recalls the World War II as an event that affected her early childhood. Her parents received rations of food and clothing from the federal government, which limited their material possessions. She stated this was the time she first realized that she was poor. Like other African Americans, the Jim Crow laws affected almost every aspect social of life during pre civil rights movements. She can remember instances of racism where she was served food through the back door, using segregated public bathrooms, and reading old school books that came from white schools. She noted that America has come a long way from the days of Jim Crow. The vindication of Barack Obama as the first black president of the United States is proof of America s progression in race relations. Questions On The Action Challenge Essay Action Challenge: Answer the following questions as briefly as possible (think 300 words or less) o Tell us about a time when you worked in customer service, didn t know how to handle a situation, and worked hard to figure out what to do. Share the steps you took and the outcome. When I worked as a Student Technology Consultant, there was a student who came to the front desk in straight panic mode. She was working on an important assignment in the computer lab, and it seemingly went missing before her eyes. I was immediately empathetic, because of course I ve been there, and told her I would do all I could to help her recover the document. First, I used prior knowledge. Admittedly, it was limited, and none of my methods did the trick. Then, I went online and searched for solutions. (She was freaking out, and my intuition told me that she actually did lose her assignment, so I told her if I couldn t recover her document I would write a note explaining the situation to her professor. Of course, some professors wouldn t care, but I figured it may help some if she needed an extension, etc.) I tried about three or four methods, before I finally found a solution that worked (searching temp folders on the drive). I was honestly almost as happy as her to find a solution. She was grateful, and said she appreciated my patience and thoroughness. Before she left I gave her some tips for backing up her work regularly...and luckily she didn t need that note. o Briefly share with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The History Of Politics In Texas With every state comes a specific and distinctive history of politics, and, more often than not, a brief understanding of the cultural changes that occurred throughout the years. Texas has one of the most interesting shifts: an almost clean cut shift from a Democratic, or blue , state, to a Republican, or red , state, after nearly 100 years of Democratic dominance. This is comparable to the state of Virginia, which also saw Republican representation after Democratic dominance for nearly 50 years. However, where Texas remains mainly Republican today, Virginia is an accurate embodiment of a two party state . With this being said, that doesn t mean Texas will stay this way. This campaign s goal was to unite white Virginian Democrats so they could work together to prevent desegregation in public schools. Many schools, including an entire school system, were shut down between 1958 1959 to prevent integration. Most of the laws catered to this massive resistance were overturned by state and federal courts within in a year, but some of the anti integration ideology continued to persist in Virginia for many years. Byrd ran for governor of Virginia in 1925, and thus the Byrd Organization was born. Byrd serves as governor until 1930, and then was elected to the United States Senate in 1933, where he served until his retirement in 1965. For nearly 40 years, Byrd familiarized himself with the courthouse cliques , otherwise known as the state officers in each county. With every relationship he created, a level of respect was given to Byrd, giving him unofficial power over these officers. While these courthouse cliques still made recommendations for certain candidates for statewide offices, Byrd only considered them after careful consultation . It became obvious that no candidate in Virginia would succeed without his stamp of approval. Byrd remained in power by greatly limiting the spread of power throughout the state; he amended the state constitution to reduce the number of statewide elected officials to just three, including the governor, the lieutenant governor, and attorney general, and also rescheduled the ... • 43. Pros And Cons Of Recidivism Rates As of the end of 2015, there were 1,526,800 prisoners in the United States being held in state or federal correctional facilities. Every year, thousands of people are released from jail or prison. Most people who are incarcerated today will eventually be released. Most of these individuals return to a life of freedom without the skills they need to survive. Recidivism rates suggest that many of these individuals will re offend within six months of release, and most will reoffend within three years. This is not because they re bad people; it s because they are trying to thrive in a system that sets them up to fail. Given grim post release arrest rates, it s hard to understand why our government is not doing more to help those transitioning from incarceration to life on the outside. It doesn t make sense for taxpayer dollars to go towards incarcerating people over and over it seems that the money could be better spent improving rehabilitation programs for inmates. Increased funding for programs aimed at helping former inmates transition to life on the outside would likely lead to better outcomes for those individuals, fewer crimes being committed, and lower recidivism rates. One would hope that our society would want to see people who are incarcerated serve their time, get rehabilitated, get released, and become productive members of their communities. It is well known that former inmates face significant challenges upon being released. Some of these challenges include ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It would make sense that Shakespeare employs this literary method to reveal something about Hamlet s own internal struggle in any given soliloquy. Hamlet is an conflicted and self disparaging individual who often finds himself toiling with his own ideas and movies frequently. But the first soliloquy is used to reveal to the audience that Hamlet is furious at his mother and Claudius, even before he learns his father was supposedly murdered by the new king. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By comparing corruption to a rotting plant, Shakespeare manages to insert a large, overarching theme into a few sentences of a soliloquy. While there is micro juxtaposition in the sentences and metaphors in the soliloquy, the first passionate soliloquy provides a striking contrast to the artificial dialogue that Hamlet must exchange with Claudius in court. The juxtaposition of tone emphasizes how rules and customs of the royal court that foster corruption. Shakespeare also juxtaposes spiritual things and earthly things, O, that this is too too sullied flesh would melt,/ Thaw and resolve itself into dew (10). Hamlet is disgusted by the earthly flesh he has to live in and wishes to be something pure and spiritual like dew. The earthly things to hamlet, like soil and weeds, are gruesome. To Hamlet, the world is corrupt and so are the people in it. Shakespeare juxtaposes the earthly with the divine in order to show how Hamlet, while he wanting to be pure, is trapped on earth by some obligation, such as a canon gainst self slaughter (10). The ban on suicide is also a symbol for Hamlet s obligation to stay in the royal court until things are set right. Allusion is also implemented to emphasize the corruption that is slowly taking over the Royal court. He was denied twice, in 1973 and 1974. He was angry because other people, with lower grade point averages, were admitted to the program. But these people were admitted through the special program. The special program was made for the purpose to increase representation of disadvantaged students. The screening process involved the candidate s indication of what race they were. They could say they were a minority group, or if they were economically and/or educationally disadvantaged. Then the special admissions committee would see if they did meet the criteria. • 47. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Longest War By Rebecca Solnit For my rhetorical analysis, I read Rebecca Solnit s essay The Longest War, which shed a light on the unequal treatment of men and women and the violence that women face throughout their lives, and around the world. In analyzing this essay, I looked at the context and the substance of Solnit s essay. In terms of context, I looked primarily at her use of examples, and where these examples come from. First off, Solnit conveyed messages of gender inequality and violence from around the globe, rather than just throughout the United States. Additionally, she creates ties between the Civil Rights Movement and the women s rights movement that is currently happening to emphasize the importance of the events to the readers. I looked at the essay and the context of it and tried to tie in what Solnit was saying with how I felt about the essay itself. Even if someone has children they do not really think about it unless something seems wrong with their child. Ever since this class I never really thought too much about how we all develop.
