This semester for my civic engagement, I got the opportunity to work with WKAR. It is part of Michigan
State University Broadcasting Services, a division of MSU Communication Arts Sciences. It includes

Humor has entertained and enthralled audiences for all of recorded history. Everyone enjoys a good laugh,
but what exactly makes something humorous? It could be tension that is released in an unexpected and
positive way. It could be the discussion of subject seen as taboo. Humor could also just be the enjoyment
of other s misfortunes. In the Birds by Aristophanes uses all three techniques to humor the audience, but
one specific scene utilizes humor exceptionally well. Aristophanes writes:
PEITHETAIROS. Not a chance. / I want a treaty first. Like the marriage contract / That knife grinder
made with his great big wife: / No biting, no tearing, no scratching, / No pecking the pectorals, Tearing the
testicles, / Shoving sharp objects up the

Aristophanes accomplishes humor using taboo speech. Peithetairos begins his statement by belittling the
gods. He simplifies Hephaestus to a knife grinder and his wife is not even names properly. The demeaning
of religious figures is a common comedic practice. It relies on the unpredictable and shocking actions of
the comedian to create tension. It also makes and appeal to the ego of the audience. Lowering the status of
the gods would create a feeling superiority for the audience. Aristophanes also implies that sharp objects
would be stuck up the character s anus. Most cultures would consider discussing sticking objects in the
rectum to be taboo, but Aristophanes uses the fact that it is taboo to shock the audience. The scene uses
the shock to add tension that is then released resulting in humor. The use of taboo subjects to create humor

works of England s Captain James Cook and prior expeditions to explore the territory funded by the
American Philosophical Society. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and the
biological father, so to speak, of the Lewis and Clark expedition, had been well interested in finding the
shortest most convenient route of communication between the U.S. the Pacific ocean. One notable
example of this was with a French botanist by the name of André Michaux, who in the year 1793,
embarked on an expedition to search for an all water route access across the continent. Michaux was
selected by the then Vice President Jefferson because the Frenchman was a trained scientist in botany,
astronomy, mineralogy, and ethnology. Jefferson s goals for this expedition was purely geographically
based, but also for the sake of knowledge, signifying how curious many Americans were of the then
unknown territory. Unfortunately, the expedition didn t end the way Jefferson imagined it would, as
Jefferson discovered Michaux to be a secret agent of the French Republic who was then recalled on
Jefferson s behalf. Over the following years, Jefferson let the idea sit in the dust, mainly due to political
