SГёren Kierkegaard
People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they
seldom use. Lets go back to when men valued thought, for they valued its effect on the world,
lets go back and take a look at the father of Christian Existentialism, SГёren Kierkegaard. SГёren
Kierkegaard was born to a father who inflicted strict and rigorous religious teaching upon his
children. His father felt this was necessary because of his sinful habit that resulted in an affair
with his 1st wife s maid. Kierkegaard, after a broken engagement with his love, was handed over
to a life of severe melancholy. Yet as a result of both his personal pain and brilliant mind, a literary
life few could surpass, and wisdom of thought (does that make sense) ensued.... Show more content

His answer was summarized in three words, Fear and Trembling. This is something that he spent
an immense amount of time answering, and his answers can be condensed into the example that
he gave from the Old Testament in the Bible. He gives Christians an example in which to follow,
in the patriarch Abraham. The example that Abraham gives, and we are to follow, is found in
how Abraham responds to the command to kill his son. For man, especially a father, this
command is unfathomable, yet because God wanted to test Abraham (give better reasoning), he
told him to sacrifice his son. Kierkegaard looks at Genesis 22:2, it says, He said, Take your son,
your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt
offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. He notes the unbearable precision in
the command, when God says take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love (emphasis
added) Kierkegaard also takes a close look at the beginning of the next verse, it says, So Abraham
rose early in the morning. He notes that some men take this excerpt to men that Abraham was rising
early to faithfully carry out his duty. And while that has some truth to it, it is not complete,
Kierkegaard emphasizes the fact that he rose early, not because he got a great night of sleep, rather
that he wrestled with this command in

The Mental Health Service Act
Mental health illnesses have been around since interrelated relationships have been present in
society. The treatment of this illness has evolved immensely throughout history. Early on, those
who were mentally ill were demonized and thought to be an all mighty evil, which had the ability to
be passed on to others. Due to this ideology, many people shunned, and banished those who were
thought to be mentally handicapped. In order to protect society from these beasts many people
imprisoned mentally ill individuals and were stripped of the ability to live their lives. Fortunately,
as society progressed and different ways of treating the mentally ill were established through
scientific advancements. Along with these advances, treatment for... Show more content on

Mental illness dates back to the 1800 s. Most who were determined to have a mental illness were
placed in prisons, or chambers to protect society as they were seen as wild and dangerous. There
was no real change to the treatment of mentally ill individuals until Dorothea Dix, a schoolteacher
and American activist, began a movement to change the way the mentally ill were seen and treated
in society. Centers, or institutions were built to reside mentally ill individuals to fully care and
provide treatment for them. Unfortunately, many of these institutions were closed down due to
improper care of the patients by the staff, an uneven staff to client ratio, and the institutions were
underfunded. Society began to realize that this particular population was unable to fully care for
themselves as many of those who were deinstitutionalized from the institutions were left homeless,
broke and untreated. An individual, Clifford Beers, who experienced first hand the abuse and
maltreatment of those who were institutionalized, sparked a mental health reform movement with an
autobiography, A Mind That Found Itself, which tells about the time he spent within the institution.
His autobiography began the movement towards many historic Acts that would help

Radiation And Its Effects On Children
While healthy babies are born every day, not everyone is so fortunate. In many cases, diagnostic
radiology is required for patients during their childhood. Can having this radiation during the
formative years lead to adverse effects later in life? The biggest concern from radiation is the risk
of cancer. Cancercan occur at any dose from ionizing radiationbecause it is a stochastic effect,
meaning that it is probabilistic. The probability of a stochastic effect, such as cancer, increases as
the dose increases. While receiving this radiation may be necessary, it can cause some serious
trouble later in life, such as breast cancer, leukemia, and thyroid cancer. These adverse effects
could happen at any age; however, there is an increased... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That is 4.5 years worth of background radiation1 (10). With pediatric patients receiving multiple
exams, this amount of radiation can quickly add up and cause serious concerns later in life. One
potential stochastic effect that can occur with ionizing radiation is thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer
is the 5th most common cancer in women. The diagnosis of thyroid malignancy has increased
worldwide in the last few decades and is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the United States
with a 5.1% increase from 2003 to 2012. Common symptoms of thyroid cancer are a lump on the
neck, a tight feeling in the neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hoarseness, and swollen lymph
nodes. However in many cases, no symptoms arise and the cancer is diagnosed because an
abnormality is seen on an imaging test being performed for another reason2.
At this time, it is not clear how much diagnostic radiation is contributing to the increase in
thyroid cancer cases. It is possible that the increase in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer can be
attributed to a greater rate of detection by use of ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration3.
The thyroid tissue itself is among the tissues that are less sensitive to radiation, however, thyroid
cancer is still such a concern because the thyroid is so superficial in the body1 (77). Even doses as
small as 50 100 mGy have been associated with an increased risk of thyroid malignancy in children,

Using Wifi Fingerprinting Is An Important Issue
Abstract Accurately localization using WiFi fingerprinting is an important issue. As many sensors
can be exposed to attacks, we need to be sure about the validity of the received data and to get the
accurate position inspite of the presence of attack. We address the problem of detecting malicious
attacks to the sensors of a WiFi fingerprinting network. Here, we suggest a novel algorithm to detect
the attackusing statistical measurement.
We expose our data to a spoofing attack algorithm to see the effect of our attack detection
algorithm. We are able to enhance the prediction of locations in presence of attack by using our
detection scheme.

I. I NTRODUCTION
The term cyber physical systems (CPS) refers to a new systems with integrated computational and
physical capa bilities that can interact with humans through many new modalities [1]. CPS have
been at the core of critical in frastructures and industrial control systems for years. CPS are
becoming more vulnerable to computer attacks for many reasons [3]. There are many challenges
for securing cyber physical systems [2].
Indoor localization is an example of cyber physical systems.
For outdoor localization, a Global Navigation Satellite System
(GNSS) such as Global Positioning System (GPS) can be used. However, GPS is not suitable for
indoor environments as the satellite signals cannot penetrate walls or roof of buildings [10] [11].

Essay on Advertisings Subliminal Message
Fallacious reasoning is the act of forming strong one sided opinions based on one s perceptions in
regards to marketing. Sometimes the reasoning can present a strong message; such as that from a
dogmatic viewpoint where only one true choice exist within the mind of the observer. Though not
always disagreeable such as the fallacious reasoning dogmatism; fallacious reasoning is used a lot
in today s advertisingto influence people in society s thinking, social atmospheres, and outlooks.

The following advertising controversially displays a symbol of dogmatism. Eerily similar to the
pasta noodles package American Beauty one would see in their local supermarket. Dogmatism
is exemplified on this movie soundtrack cover as it is exposes the observer to first a highlighted
Warhol tinged title. One fact that contradicts this hidden reasoning is there is more than one
America, and the Americas are indigenous to many races and cultures. An additional example
of the one sided attitude marketers had towards the promotion of this advertisement is its
stereotypical image of how many people in the world perceives North American women to be.
This title plays upon all people wanting to fit in of the idea of what they perceive beauty to be.
As it also echoes the sexist fifties symbols of pinup girls. Underneath it seems like this image is
the just choice for what an American beauty can be. A blond, petite, woman whose body looks
so flawless it only needs to be adorned in roses. In this image it seems that roses can be smelt as
well as draw upon other senses. This ad unwillingly touches the inner emotions in all who view it.
It also devalues the principles America is known for, not only the melting pot of the world, but a
place where women have fought for liberties greater than this single sided image.

Women Of The Katungulu Bible Training School
CONTEXT (MOTIVATION):
The purpose of this project is to help the women of the Katungulu Bible Training School ( KBTS )
develop basic entrepreneurial skills and gain a sense of empowerment. Women come to KBTS with
their husbands, who are training to become pastors with the African Inland Church Tanzania (
AICT ). While much emphasis is placed on teaching women to serve as a pastor s wife, women are
not often given the opportunity to make a name for themselves and are relegated to a subservient
role. This project will build on the work that McMaster Scholars, Genelle Castro and Alicia Kalik,
began in 2015. During the 2015 KBTS Women s Conference, attendees expressed a desire to have

When a business is successful it is able to provide a sustainable income. By having two incomes,
the family can better financially support their children, along with their other financial
obligations. School will be more affordable for children, and they can see what accomplishments
their parents have achieved. Children will gain more responsibilities at home, and help them
learn new skills along the way (Sagalla Carney, 2012). Through all of the obstacles that women
have faced struggling for the right to have a career, it can be empowering to have a career.
Women did not give up, and knew that they had what it took to support a family, as well as
themselves. Because it was a challenge, women started working harder for what they wanted, and
helped them become better business women. Their confidence rose, and having more opportunities
gave them a purpose (Dina, 2012).
METHODOLOGY:
My project consisted of conducting a one day women s conference. The first part of the session
will cover empowerment. I have created posters and activities that cover the basic tenets of
empowerment. The purpose of this section is to get women to find their strengths and see what
they can accomplish for themselves. The next section covered entrepreneurship. In that session
attendees were broken into groups in order to observe how well they interact with each other to
form a business. Each group developed a business and a product that they would

New Media In The Turn Within By Susan J. Douglas
New media is a less traditional version of media resulting from the digitization of almost
everything. Compared to its predecessor, new media is instantaneous, interactive, and universally
accessible. The largest aspect of new media is social media. It s role in today s media environment
presents an interesting paradox. On one hand, social mediais rather limiting. It is incredibly easy to
tailor one s online experience to their personal beliefs and perspective. At the same time, social
media presents the opportunity to connect with the worldat large. To say that new media allows for
one but the not the other would be incorrect. Today s society is one that both reveres and fears
social media, leaving people in an interesting position. In her essay The Turn Within , Susan J.
Douglas discusses how communications technologies have led to an inward, narcissistic scope
instead of creating a global village in which the world is bound together. There are oftentimes
calls for a return to old media due to (somewhat unfounded) fears of newer media making people
anti social and self absorbed. But how exactly is someone communicating by way of more... Show

It is true that when given the chance to participate in the world s changing social and political
landscape through social media, many people choose to cling to their own opinions and ignore
the perspectives of others. But the relationship between this narcissism and social media is not
one that is always clear or necessarily true. There are a number of people use social media for
things other than sharing pictures. In fact, people are capable of rational thought with and without
the aid of social media, despite the prevailing attitude that says opposite. While there is surely
room for improvement, today s media environment is certainly capable of helping us make sense
of the world if we really allow

How Does Jetblue Compare And Contrast Virgin Southwest And...
2. Competitive Environment
JetBlue has been recognized for offering cheap flights to business travelers, in the same way that
other airlines come up with similar offers for different types of travelers. In 2009, (case study)
JetBlue was on top of the list of the low cost carriers. The airline is classified as a major carrier,
which means their annual revenue starts at $1 billion, JetBlue has a $3 billion revenue, still and all
it is mentioned that JetBlue is smaller in comparison to other major airlines.
Over the years, one of the main competitors of jetBlue has been Southwest. In a 2009 report it was
mentioned that two other low cost airlines, Virgin America and SkyBus, were some of the biggest
competitors for jetBlue (case study); however, a 2013 analysis might have suggested in some way
that JetBlue was about to have new airlines to compete with, Singapore Airlines and Emirates
Airlines, by introducing new features and technological innovation in their offerings (Popova,
2013). Airlines are implementing these improvements in order to attract more customers that look
for comfort, but at the same time affordability. It can increase the competitivity, but it is not
noticeable immediately.
Even though, JetBlue is not directly competing with other international airlines, a comparison
and contrast with competitors such as Southwest and Virgin America can be seen in small, but
important details such as the baggage allowance. JetBlue has fare options in order to find out the
amount of baggages admitted, the first fare is called Blue Flex, and it allows to bring a maximum
of two checked bags under 50 pounds at no cost, a third bag would cost $100; the second one, the
Blue Plus fare allows only one bag under 50 pounds, a second bag has a cost of $35, and a third bag
would cost $100; the third and last fare is called Blue and the first checked bag under 50 pounds
has a cost of $25, the second bag $35 and a third or fourth bag would cost $100 (JetBlue, 2017).
On the other hand, Southwest doesn t have specific fares to decide bag allowance, they simply
allow 2 checked bags per customer at no cost (Southwest, 2017). Also, Virgin America which is
another competitor of JetBlue has a fee of $25 per checked bag

with his life to become so helpless. I knew I had to step up and help out more with the family.
This meant driving my dad to doctors appointments, helping him with his medication, and even
teaching him how to read again. My father became unable to work, turning our two income home
into a one income home. On top of that, most of the money that had been saved for my college
education went to paying his medical bills. My fathers stroke cost upwards of 60,000 dollars in

these past couple of years have been really hard, they have also served as a reality check for me. I

Essay on The Effects of Divorce
The Effects of Divorce
Divorce in our society has become increasingly common. Fifty percent of all marriages will end in
divorce and each year 2 million children are newly introduced to their parents separation, (Monthly
Vital Statistics Report ).
Demographers predict that by the beginning of the next decade the majority of the youngsters
under 18 will spend part of their childhood in single parent families, many created by divorce.
During this confusing period of turmoil and high emotional intensity, the child must attempt to
understand a complex series of events, to restructure numerous assumptions and expectations about
themselves and their world. He or she may be uprooted to a new school, city or neighborhood

The role of the child becomes one of warding off the serious depression that threatens the parents
and holding the parent together. Wallerstein calls these children the overburden child . They
accounted for 15 percent of the children in her study. Many become angry at being trapped by
the parent s demands, at being robbed at their separate identity and denied their childhood. They
are saddened, sometimes beyond repair, at seeing so few of their own needs gratified, (p. 41).
Judith Wallerstein also found that divorce has long lasting psychological effect on many children,
one that in fact, may turn out to be permanent. Children of divorce have vivid memories about
their parens separation. The details are etched permanently in their minds, more than any other
experiences in their lives. She also identified the sleeper effect as another long term implication
of divorce. It is a delayed reaction to an event that happened many years earlier, (p.60). She saw
many young women with acute, delayed depression which she defines as the sleeper effect and
warns of it s danger. It occurs when many young women are about to make decisions that have long
term implications for their lives. Due to the different studies that have been followed out and the
research that I have done, I expect to find many changes in children both short and long term due to
the divorce of their parents. I expect that these long

Cuban Missile Crisis Prime Time Analysis
During times of national crises, television galvanized the country by preempting regular
programming to provide essential coverage of significant events. Memorable examples of this
were seen during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 14 days in 1962 when the United States and the
Soviet Union squared off over the placement of Russian missiles in Cuba, and the four days
reportage of the assassination and funeral of John F. Kennedy. The same was true with news
coverage of the U.S. space program, especially the Moon landing in July 1969. Films of battlefield
activity in Vietnam, as well as photographs, interviews, and casualty reports, were broadcast daily
from the centres of conflict into American living rooms. As both international and domestic

The escapist fictional fare of prime time made little reference to what was being reported on the
news. That began to change in the late 1960s and early 70s, but the transition was an awkward
one; some shows began to reflect the new cultural landscape, but most continued to ignore it.
That Girl (ABC, 1966 71), an old fashioned show about a single woman living and working in the

Personal Views On Music Therapy Philosophies
Personal Views on Music Therapy Philosophies There are many different views and approaches
used in therapy and in society in general. These views include: cognitive, behavioral, cognitive
behavioral, psychodynamic, biological, and humanistic (Comer, 2014). Some of the approaches
used include the Orff approach, Dalcroze approach, Kodaly approach, Bonny Method of Guided
Imagery and Music, and Nordoff Robbins approach (Darrow, 2008). Darrow explained the different
philosophies, populations, and applications of these diverse approaches. In music therapy, the
theory that is practiced by a music therapist will determine the types of approaches and terms
used and how they use them. The approaches used will also affect how they interact with clients.
The different approaches can elicit very different interactions with clients (Darrow). There are
three main theories used in therapy. These three main theories are known as psychodynamic,
behavioral, and humanistic. The psychodynamic view is based on repressed thoughts and
feelings, the behavioral view is based on behaviors, and the humanistic view is based on self
actualization (Comer, 2014). Each of these views will be further explored as I piece together my
own personal philosophy and views on each main theory. The first theory, psychodynamic, was

The Stono Rebellion And The Salem Witch Trials
Rebellions have played a pivotal role throughout the creation of civilization, impacting the eventual
outcomes of cultures. While analyzing significant rebellions within the American colonies, one
aspect persists throughout: one culture s assumption that it is superior to another, prompting an
attempt to impose that group s cultureand way of life over the other. In Metacom s War, the Stono
Rebellion, and the Salem Witch Trials, that common theme is evident and corresponds to Bailyn s
quote, It was the intermingling of [barbarity] and developing civilization that is the central
characteristic of the world that was emerging in America. However, the question remains: who are
the barbarians and who are the civilized? In each of the rebellions there is a clear historical
tendency to label groups; indeed, it must be noted that viewpoint is of utmost importance when
evaluating such events, if one is to truly understand the plight of the barbarianand the civilized.
That said, by dissecting the quote, and analyzing these three events, it is clear that each rebellion
was the result of cultural ignorance and, as a consequence, a sort of death occurred in each culture
for Metacom s war, culture and tradition, for Stono, African freedom, and for Salem, the Puritan
utopia.
In order to fully comprehend the historical implications, it is necessary to first discuss the language
which the quote uses and analyze how it applies to each of the three rebellions more specifically, the

Essay On The Second Great Awakening
The Second Great Awakening was known as a religious revival that occurred throughout the United

of the nineteenth century. However, this religious movement was greatly forced among the
Northeast and the Midwest. In addition to being a religious movement, other reforms took place
socially including women s and slaves rights, and contributions to education. Ultimately, a
distinctive feature of religious life during the Second Great Awakening was the Camp Meetings.
Camp Meetings was a technical developed by Minister James McGready. Preachers of every

The creation story of Shinto builds more appreciation and respect for the kami as well. The
creation myth can be found in the Kojiki and it begins with the two gods, Izanagi and Izanami.
The two gods are husband and wife, whom through Izanami, gave birth to the Japan s islands, the
kami of the earth, and the kami of heaven. Throughout Izanami s various pregnancies, the birth of
Ho musubi or Fire growth was what birthed the most kami. During Ho musabi s birth he burned his
mother making her fall ill. Izanami created kami that personified water, metal and clay through her
urine, vomit, and feces. Afterwards Izanami died and her husband, Izanagi, in a fit of grief slew
another kami which in turn generated more kami. The two creation gods are responsible for the
creation of the other kami, and in one interpretation, responsible for the birth of the sun goddess
Amaterasu(Sandvik). Izanagi and Izanami created the natural world that the humans live in, they
are the reason kami exist, and in the long term Japan s history. The nature aspect of Shintoism is
connected to the belief that kami exist within nature and hold the source of life. According to
Rosemarie Bernard, author of Shintoand Ecology, the goal of Shintoism is to prevent the natural
world from devolving into a state of chaos without disturbing the kami and nature. It is the goal of
shintoists to maintain balance with the kami and natural world (Bernard). The way Shintoism
achieved this balance was through a variety of forms of purification. These forms of purification
purified areas designed for the kami. The houses designed for the kami are called yuniwa, which
translates to purified yard or court, these houses are usually sacred enclosures with rocks placed in
the center. However, yoshiro is designed with the purpose of manifesting the physical form of the
kami while yuniwa is designed to welcome the kami to shrines. Shrines protect itself from outside
forces through shimenawa. Shimenawas protected sacred areas by using a plaited straw rope that
could be seen hanging from the front of a Shinto shrine. The ceremonies involving purification
include the two concepts of seimei, translated it means clean and happy, and seichoku, translated
means right

Essay about Physics Cantilever Lab
Independent Assessment Physics Lab (SL): Cantilever Flexion

October 21st, 2012
Introduction
Purpose: The purpose of this Physics Lab is to investigate what factors determine the amount of
flexion of the cantilever. Hence, the objective is to establish a relationship between the length of a
cantilever, which may give some insight into the physics of cantilevers.
Hypothesis: If one increases the length of a cantilever, one would expect there to be an increase in
deflection/flexion of the cantilever. Similarly, if one increases the massof the load, one would
expect there to be an increase in the deflexion/flexion of the cantilever. In addition, I predict that
proportionality will also occur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* Dependent Variable: The deflection/flexion of the cantilever in metres. This will be measured
indirectly by measuring the initial height of the bottom of the cantilever with no mass added (which
is equal to the height of the table) and the new height of the bottom of the cantilever after each
trial, which will be measured with mass added. Hence, the difference between these heights is
equal to the deflection/flexion of the cantilever. The material and other physical properties of the
cantilever will be controlled by using the same yardstick as a cantilever for each trial.
Data Collection and Processing
My experiment is divided into two parts; experiment A (involving the relationship between flexion
and the mass of the load) and experiment B (involving the relationship between the flexion and the
length of the cantilever).
Below are two tables in which I have recorded the data which I obtained during the experiment. The
first table reflects the Relationship between the deflection/flexion of the cantilever and the mass of
the load and the second table reflects the relationship between the flexion of the cantilever and the
length of the cantilever.
(i) Relationship between the deflection/flexion of the cantilever and the load mass (5 trials)

Flippo Brunelleschi s Influence On Renaissance Architecture
Have you ever wondered who created those unique, detailed buildings long, long, ago? Renaissance
Architects were inspired by Ancient Rome and Greek architecture, to create beautiful buildings.
Filippo Brunelleschi was influenced and applied his idea s to building one of his most famous
creations. Leon Battista Alberti s sculptures and architectureare mainly due to his three influential
aspects on Renaissance art, and Roman architecture. Andrea Palladio was also influenced by the
Roman and Greek architecture, and with that created some unique buildings in the Renaissance. So

Alberti was not only an amazing architect, he was also very talented in creating Renaissance art
(specifically painting), poetry, and sculpturing, which was a very coincidental, and worked well
together all around. His life span was from February 14, 1404 April 25, 1472. As a designer and a
student of Vitruvius and of ancient Roman remains, he grasped the nature of column and lintel
architecture, from the visual rather than structural viewpoint. Some of his other major
accomplishments through his years was through the influence on ancient rome architecture, he
designed many buildings such as the The Tempio Malatestiano (aka, the Church of San
Francesco). Alberti also designed the New Facade of Santa Maria Novella, Florence in 1456. In
his architecture, he had the intention of using their symbolic content and associations to ennoble a
modern building and give it the sense of having a Renaissance culture feel to almost all of the
buildings he would construct. As one once said about Alberti s work, The result of the distinction
is a new emphasis on building mass totally unlike, even alien to Brunelleschi s architecture at San
Lorenzo that so carefully emphasized plane, space, and line. It is, however, related to the new
interest in the quality and majesty of mass and the sculptural treatment of space at Santo Spirito. So

Kodak Case
Introduction
Eastman Kodak Company, commonly known as Kodak is an American multinational imaging and
photographic equipment, materials and services company headquartered in Rochester, New York,
United States. It was founded by George Eastman in 1889. Kodak is best known for photographic
film products. During most of the 20th century Kodak held a dominant position in this sector. In
fact, Eastman Kodak Co. is one of the dominant market share holders within the camera and other
photography related industries. Kodak pioneered amateur photography and is often credited for
the invention of roll film and the first camera. The markets for color film and color photofinishing
in 1954 were controlled by Kodak. It had over 90% of the amateur color ... Show more content on

According to the definition, a relevant product market includes all those products which are
regarded as interchangeable or substitutable by the consumer by reason of the products
characteristics, their prices and their intended use . We can presume that the relevant market for
film includes all of the five firms: Kodak, Fuji, Konica, Agfa and 3M. However, not all of these
firms products are viewed as fully interchangeable and substitutable by the consumer as stated in the
definition. According to statistics, about 50% of consumers will only buy Kodak film despite of
substantial price increases. This phenomenon indicates the consumers adamant belief in the
superior quality of Kodak film. There were two different viewpoints on the relevant geographic
product market for film discussed in the case. According to the district court, the relevant
geographic market for film is worldwide, since foreign manufactures sell considerable amounts of
film in the United States and Kodak s market share is only 36% globally. However, the government
argues that this determination is wrong and that the relevant geographic market in this case should
be limited to the United States. The main explanation here is that a relevant geographic market
comprises an area where the firm can exercise the market power. Taking into consideration the fact
that Kodak charges much higher prices in the US comparing to other countries, the relevant
geographic market

Examples Of Irony In The Plague
The main irony in The Plague is the way Camus treats freedom throughout the book. The people
of Oran become prisoners of the plague and the whole city becomes quarantined by the Prefect
when death tolls hit 30 people a day. It can be questioned whether they were really free before
the plague, considering the way they lived out their lives from day to day. Every day the populace
would wake up work and then gamble in the evenings and a lot of people in Orantake their loved
ones for granted. Only when the plaguebecomes really bad and people start to die or are ultimately
separated by quarantine from their friends, lovers and families do they realize how they should
have loved and cared for them.
In the very beginning of the epidemic, the citizens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Camus was an atheist and didn t believe that death, suffering, and human existence has any real
rational meaning. Since Camus didn t believe in God or the devil, Camus saw humans as
mortals, living under a crazy and completely absurd death sentence. However, Camus did believe
that people are capable of giving their lives meaning hence when the people of Oran were
starting to give up, they banded together and worked to end the death and suffering of those that
have been infected or affected by the plague. Although Camus was an atheist, in The Plague
religion can be found in the book coming from the Jesuit priest, Father Paneloux. He preached
that this was God s way of separating the good from the bad, saying that this only happened
because God s compassion for the evil doing in the town ran out and it was time for the people
there to realize the real meaning behind their lives. (Malcolm 26) Paneloux basically believed that
the plague was for the good of the townspeople. Although this is here, Father Paneloux is the only
character with religious beliefs. Other main characters such as Dr. Rieux, John Tarrou and
Raymond Rambert lack those religious beliefs and believe that there is no logical reason behind
the cause of the

Paradox In Catch 22
In Catch 22, Joseph Heller uses paradoxes, selfishness, self destruction, and miscommunication to
satirize and provoke changes in war and the military establishment through a pilot, Yossarian,
whose only goal has become to escape the traps created by bureaucracy before it kills him.
Heller uses irrationality to portray the waste and justification that takes place in the military.
The court martial uses a paradox to assert guilt instead of any real evidence. He wouldn t be on
trial if he wasn t guilty. This irrationality contrasts with the idea of the rule of law. It is indicative
of the lack of thinking and individuality from the judge. The judge is not the only character to
behave insanely. According to critic Louis Hasley, There are no good guys in this book. Just
about every one of the approximately two score characters of some importance is called crazy at
one time or another (Hasley 5). Major Major s paradoxical loss of his lunch position led to his
isolation. Too high ranked to sit with the enlisted men, not enough experience to sit with the
officers, The isolation leads to a vast amount of waste and confusion caused by Major Major in his
irrational promotion. Eating is commonly used as an act of communion in books. Major Major is
denied this community by Cathcart so that he can get rid of a troublesome subordinate. The
paradox in Catch 22 embodies Yossarians situation. The catch is that by asking to be grounded for
insanity, one proves that they are not insane

The Devil And Tom Walker Imagery Analysis
Imagery is used to help create a more imaginative and well developed story. These stories started to
become more popular during the time of the Romantic and Transcendentalist. Washington Irving
was an extremely popular author during this time, who was also an author that stretched and tested
the limits of past authors styles, as well as creating his own new style. Washington Irving s short
storyThe Devil and Tom Walkeris a retelling of a Germanic Faust legend. In the story Tom Walker
finds himself in a deep in the forest and comes face to face with the Devil. The Devil tries to make
an agreement with Tom, this agreement will make Tom extremely rich. Tom ruminates over the

Irving theme in this short story is that all action have consequences. In the story Tom tries to
trick the Devil by becoming more pious that others who have religious their entire lives.
However, it does not work, because one day the Devil comes back for Tom holding a black
horse, which neighed and stamped with impatience (Irving 359). This small segment of imagery
supports the theme, because the horse is anxious and impatient as if it has waited a long time to
be here and take Tom away to what he deserves. The reader can imagine a horse that is rearing
and ready to go. It demonstrates that even if Tom protected himself for a little while the Devil
still came back to dispense the consequences for the deal he and Tom made together. Tom worked
as a usurer to gain a large fortune that he wanted, just so he could flaunt it in an ostentatious
manner. However he wanted to get this money easily by bartering with the Devil to find an
agreement that made him rich quickly. He did get this money but he suffered consequences
because of it, and when the black horse swept him away all of his earthly treasure disappeared as
well. All his bonds and mortgages were reduced to cinders , his chest of gold and silver was
filled with chips and shavings , and where his two horse were two skeletons lay in his stable
(Irving 359). He was never able to enjoy the money he made, because of the actions he took to
gain it. On the other hand, Tom never did enjoy his money, because of his stingy nature. Tom
wanted all the money he could get his hands on, but he never wanted to spend a dime. In
addition with the added fear of the Devil coming at any time Tom was always on edge and at
peace. He made a deal with the Devil and the Devil made him suffer the consequences of his
actions. Old Scratch and his black horse carried him off after Tom agonized under the unknown
time the Devil s return.

I know that my inability to be at the right place, at the right time, in the right uniform, and with
the right attitude reflected poorly on my leadership which is something that I never wanted to
happen. I also know that I showed a lack of leadership, selfless service, and responsibility, which
are three of my army values. I know that my inability to leadership could later affect a promotion
and it affects the trust that my leadership has towards me. I know in order to be a successful
soldier I must show leadership qualities at all times. I know by me not showing up for work
made it look like I don t have selfless service. I know that I must put my nations, my units, and
my battle buddies needs before my own in order to accomplish the mission successfully and
smoothly. I know that when I failed to show up for duty that I not only showed lack of
responsibility but also a lack of discipline. So in conclusion I have learned that the account of
people is very high because if one person is gone it could mess up and crew or any team that
plays a big role into deployment. I never understood what the role was till my first deployment
but you have to always be prepared for the worst in everything that you do. I have to realize that
it s not just me that s here it s a whole brigade that makes moves and make things happen. Like I

Essay On The Grapes Of Wrath
From I to We The Great Depression was a time in history when almost everyone suffered. The
novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck depicts a family, the Joads, moving to California
because the bank had taken their home and land. Many families were moving away to try to find
work so that they could provide for their children. Families that were once one, later became two.
The Joad family wanted to stick together because they thought that was all they could do to get
through this unpleasant situation. Anybody who had anything gave help to those in need. These

paragraph shows how the government was so good to the people who were in need of help.
Those who had something, tried to help those who did not have anything. Once the family got to
California, they soon realized how few jobs were available. They went all around looking for
work, but never found it. They heard about a government camp in Weedpatch. They arrived
there and found out that this is the place to be. The family went to sleep, and Tom awoke earlier
than the others. He met Timothy and Wilkie Wallace eating breakfast. They offered him some
food and Tom gladly accepted. After talking for a while, the Wallace s mentioned a job. We re
laying some pipe. F you want to walk over with us, maybe we can get you on (Steinbeck 397).
The Wallace s could have easily kept the job to themselves so they would get the money, but they
did not. This shows that they did what they could do for their fellow neighbor, even when times
were bad. Many families traveling to California would stop on the side of the road, a lot of times,
wherever there was water. The Joad family meet Ivy

The Impact Of The Modern American Home On The Environment
The kitchen is one of the most important rooms of the entire house. Compared to other rooms, it
typically has a great deal more built in. Remodeling it is one of the most expensive things you can
do to a house. It also has substantial impact on the environment.
Why does it have so much impact on the environment? Because it is a work horse of a room. It
uses a lot of energy and water to keep everyone fed. A refrigerator is one of the bigger
contributors to electrical usage in your typical home, in part because you can t turn it off. It needs
to be on 24/7.
Doing this room right is one of the better ways to make sure the home is eco friendly. A large part
of that is choosing the right appliances.

The ideal image of the modern American home is rooted in the needs of the post World War 2

family with a full time mom set the standard of expectations in the American housing industry.
But since then, our demographics have diversified. On average, there are few people per house
than there were in the 1950s. Lifestyles have changed and people eat out more than they used to.
It may make no sense to have a kitchen outfitted as if there is a full time mom cooking from

This means the standard appliances can be overkill. If the space is only intended for two to three
people, a three burner stove may work well in place of a four burner one and it might make sense to

The Function Of Respiratory System
According to Melinda (2014), the function of respiratory system is to supply oxygen into the
body, by breathing in, and to remove carbon dioxide which is the waste, from the body, by
breathing out. Franklin (2014), outlines that oxygen is most needed in the body, in order to live.
This is because every cell in the body needs oxygen, in order to function properly. Also, oxygen is
required in the blood in order to covert food into energy. Beside, Melinda (2014), clarifies that these
movements are named inspiration (breathing in) and expiration (breathing out). However,
Zimmermann (2014), elaborates that the key purpose of respiratory systemis gaseous substitute. He
also simplifies that within respiratory system, new air is always brought into the body, and the
used air is expelled out. In this way, oxygen is picked up and carbon dioxide is lost by the body.
Furthermore, Waugh (2014), illuminates that air tremendously travels through the nostrils in the
nose, which is filtered, warmed and moistened. He simplifies that tiny hairs, called Cilia looks
after the nasal pathways and other parts of the respiratory area. Waugh (2014), elucidated that the
oxygen is filters out dirt and other particles that enter the nose through the breath in air. He
simplifies that air can possibly be breathed in through the mouth as another way of breathing.

Problems Associated With Urban Noise Pollution
Introduction
Urban noise pollution is causing increased health risks in the population. This is due both to the
fact that noise levels, particularly those associated with transport, have increased dramatically since
the mid twentieth century and that a higher percentage of the world population is now
concentrated in urban systems. This problem has also increased economic costs due to failing
health and reduced productivity of the population, affecting between 0.2% and 2% of gross
domestic product in the US. In the European Union, the costs range between $13 billion and $38
billion per year. In addition, traffic noise causes the depreciation of properties exposed to high
noise levels.

As a starting point, vehicles were classified into the following categories: motorcycles, cars

and trucks (over 3 tons). Subsequently, we conducted measurements of single noise on the
streets of the city (n = 533 vehicles), seeking to exclude the impact of other vehicles and other
sources of noise. To this end, we used an integrated Extech type II sound level meter (SLM) to
evaluate the instantaneous sound level (Li,1sec) during the approach and passage of each
vehicle in front of the SLM on roads with 1 and 2 lanes. These measurements followed
conventional techniques and were conducted using a tripod and a windscreen at a height of 1.2
m at a distance of 1 m from the road with A and slow weights. In parallel, we gauged the pace at
which every vehicle was voyaging utilizing manual Bushnell supplies. In all cases, the
predominating conditions included level, dry streets, wind speeds short of what 4 km/h and a low
frequency of other clamor sources.
For each type of vehicle, we conducted a regression analysis between the maximum noise level
(when passing in front of the SLM) and speed. Because this yielded low coefficients of
determination, we implemented classification trees to dissociate subgroups depending on the
speed of vehicles. Subsequently, we averaged all noise levels recorded in each subgroup at time
zero (passing in front of the SLM) and

Introduction amp; Problem Statement
Since Diamond Foods (DF) became public in 2005, they have experienced positive growth in both
stock price and sales. The management is extremely focused on expansion by capturing market
share and increasing product offerings. Their concerted effort to grow is ensuring Diamond and its
brands ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Strategy #2 seems to be too risky for a company who saw a major decrease in cash on hand from
08 to 09 (see Appendix B), and Strategy #1 will most likely dilute DF s brand identity within the
snack industry. Diamond s stock price has been strong, but has not shown significant growth since
the acquisition of Pop Secret in September 2008 (see Appendix C). Until this acquisition shows a
better translation into shareholder value, Diamond must focus its efforts on its current products and
organic growth.
Conclusion
Even though Strategies #1 amp; #2 do hold the potential for greater growth in the short term,
Diamond must focus on Strategy #3 to keep its long term vision alive. Once the company is in a
better place financially, has increased its market share with its new products, and has shown it can
translate these objectives into greater shareholder value, Diamond should then focus its efforts on
potential acquisitions. Until then, the company should keep with its current business model and
grow a more solid foundation on which to build.

Strengths: * Management and their forward looking, long term approach * Management s
willingness to take on risks * DF s brand awareness * DF s success in creative advertising amp;
reaching its target market * DF s relatively speedy new product development ability * DF s

The Theme Of Plot In Sweat By Zora Hurston
In her short story Sweat , Zora Hurston uses plot to expose the theme that what goes around comes
around. Plot is an author s careful arrangement of incidents in a narrative in order to achieve a
desired effect. In Hurston s case, the desired effect is shaping the theme of the story. Throughout
Sweat , all of the events are carefully thought out in order to show the reader that Sykes got what he
deserved, therefore creating the theme what goes around comes around. The main highlighted
events in this plotare the verbal conflict that Delia and Sykes have, the town scene where Sykes is
being discussed by local townspeople, Sykes bringing home a rattlesnake, and Sykes getting bit by
the snake.
The first major incident in the plot of Sweat is a verbal conflict between Delia and Sykes in the
beginning. It starts with Delia being scared with a bullwhip by Sykes. She reacts in fear, saying,
Sykes, what you throw dat whip on me like dat? You know it would skeer me... (Hurston). Delia
and Sykes go back and forth about how scared Delia is scared of snakes, and how Sykes
purposely wants to scare her. Delia, however, stays calm until she seizes a skillet and strikes a
defensive pose. Sykes is shocked, so he just leaves the house, slamming the gate after him
(Hurston). At this point in the story, the reader gets a good idea of the relationship between
Delia and Sykes. The reader knows Delia and Sykes are opposites, Sykes badness outlines the good,
hardworking side of Delia. This first scene serves as rising action to get to know the life of Delia
and Sykes. The theme is not yet clear, because the plot is only beginning. However, Delia
foreshadows Sykes fate at the end of this part of Hurston s story. Delia thinks out loud before
sleep when she says, Oh well, whatever goes over the Devil s back, is got to come under his belly.
Sometime or ruther, Sykes, like everybody else, is gointer reap his sowing (Hurston).
The next scene of this story is the conversation the townspeople have. When they see Delia, they
spark a conversation about how badly Sykes treats Delia (Hurston). A few of the townspeople
comment angrily, He useter be so skeered uh lookin huh...We oughter take Syke an dat stray oman

Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Be Allowed
One of the most debated topics in all of sports is whether performance enhancing drugs should be
allowed. According to the free dictionary, performance enhancing drugs is defined as Any drug
used to gain an advantage in sports. Such drugs may improve endurance or strength or accelerate
healing after injury . Performance enhancing drugs was first acknowledged as a problem in
professional sports in 1967 when the international Olympic committee created a medical board due
to the heightened use. Today there are seven types of performance enhancers including: stimulants,
narcotics, anabolic androgenic steroids, beta 2 agonists, peptide hormones, diuretics, blood doping.
That number might seem small but there is a massive amount of variety within these drugs that is
causing more and more athletes every year to use them. Performance enhancing drugs should be
illegal because of the unfair advantage, health risks, and the lack of role models that athletes would
play. Sports have been around since the beginning of time. As the games age and become more
popular, they start to evolve and become more competitive at the same time. This evolution comes
from better strategies, techniques, and ultimately the athletes themselves. In today s modern era of
sports, professional athletes are the most elite people in their field, always wanting to be better than
anyone else. With every athlete striving to become one of the greatest to ever play, some want to
take short cuts. These short cuts

The Art Of Alabama s Performance Of A Chorus Line
In the University of Alabama s performance of A Chorus Line, the performers tackled this
infamous piece for its dramatizations of what actors and performers endure in the line of work
that is theatre. As explained by the actors in the documentary Every Little Step , being a performer
in A Chorus Line is the ultimate dream because it was made by actors for actors. There were a few
factors that made the University of Alabama s performance stand out to me including the
choreography, seeing the documentary Every Little Step before the show, and the live music. I was
in absolute awe after watching the choreography of the performance. Although the choreography
was not exactly the same as the performances on broadway, I almost enjoyed it better

Similarities Between John Smith And William Bradford
Smith vs Bradford
Both John Smith and William Bradford journeyed to the New World during the time of America s
colonization in the early 1600s. These two men recorded their experiences during the voyage to
share with people back in their home country of England. While Smith and Bradford traveled to the
same place, their accounts were extremely dissimilar from each other. John Smith s General History
of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles describes America as an agriculture and livestock
rich area with endless opportunity. On the other hand, in Of Their Voyage, And How They Passed
The Sea; And Of Their Safe Arrival At Cape Cod, William Bradford stresses the hardship faced that
extended past the voyage and the painstaking work that goes into colonization. Although Smith and
Bradford s accounts have some similarities, the idea of the American dream is strengthened by
Smith and threatened by Bradford. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smith s written experience of the New World is often viewed as propaganda due to his account
only listing positive aspects of living in America. But, his strategy proved successful as more
hard working Englishmen began to travel to America to colonize as a result of John Smith s
account. In his writing, initially he talks about the great abundance of fruits and livestock
available to show potential colonists that hunger would never be an issue in the New World. Also,
his general satisfaction with the land s fertility and the convenience of nearby bodies of water is
explained throughout the work. These are important factors for a British society to have since,
around this time, long distance trading became a new way to conduct business. Smith even goes
further and states that there is no need for trading outside of the colonies as America has everything
one would ever desire within 100

Impact Of Overfishing On Marine Ecosystems And Human Culture
Introduction Overfishing occurs when fish are being caught faster than they can reproduce and
replace themselves (Lee and Safina, 1995, pg.5). It greatly affects biodiversity of marine
ecosystems and human culture.
Impacts of Overfishing Overfishing can impact marine ecosystems and communities that rely
heavily on marine mammals. Large reductions in population sizes of marketable fish species caught
yearly may significantly create economic stress within fishing communities, especially if they
mainly rely on fish for income or food, such as 3rd world countries. If marketable fish population
numbers drop too low fishermen and even whole communities may be forced to give up their way
of life, which has been passed down from generation to generation, and find jobs elsewhere
(Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2009). Loss of income and jobs is caused from decreased
population sizes, which lower productive fish stocks, and results in business closures and lowered
economic status (Lee and Safina, 1995). Food security is also affected by overfishing. Many
coastal communities depend on fish as their main food source. When consumable fish populations
decrease the food supplies and food availability also decrease, resulting in shortages to occur and
fish becoming an unreliable source of food (World Wildlife Fund, 2016). Overfishing significantly
impacts biodiversity within ecosystems. Marine life imbalance is produced when fishing of top
predators disrupts communities within the

Essay On Outsource
Outsource Abstract: Outsourcing has become a major trend over the past decade. More and more
companies, both small or large even the employee, are turning to outsourcing to grow while
restraining the costs. The growth of outsourcing seems to base on a fundamental belief that
outsourcing creates wealth and delivers value to companies that outsource. Outsourcinghas allowed
small businesses to focus on their businesses agendas, reduce costs, but many organizations are
frustrated that outsource had failed or created economic damages to their company.

company.
Section 2: Outsource The main reasons why a major corporation consider outsource is to remain
competitive with another corporation and utilize the cost. Information technology is the function
which is most likely to be outsourced approximately 30% of the time [2].
As you can see from the table in the left, another major part of the corporation that is being
outsource is training and systems development [2]. 2.1 Decision Factors For a major corporation,
the CIO spend about 80% of their time in a period of 3 6 months about the pro and con of
outsource for their company. The decision factors for outsourcing can be categorized as 1)
economic, 2) personnel, 3) risk versus control, 4) vendor and contract issues. Since IT department
gets outsource the most for most corporation, the following categorizes will be base off the IT
department.
2.1.1 Economic: One of the main reason for outsourcing will be cost saving from economies of
scale. For example, a small business need to create a website to sell their products, they don t need
to create an IT department for managing or design their website. They can outsource the web
design roles to an IT company and focus on their products.

African Americans During The Reconstruction Era
Even though the voting rights issue did not end with the Reconstruction era, it inspired many
African Americans to rise and to establish a new leadership platform. The enlightenment period of
the radical reconstruction brought a more active role in the political, economic, and social life of
the south with the Republican domination in the 1866 elections; it introduced a new era for
African Americans ( Black Leaders ). With the ratification of the 14th and 15th amendments and the
spread of political activism towards African Americans through festive parades, protests, and
community meetings, African Americans challenged themselves with the task of serving in a
political office because African Americans never had a voice to speak for them

Blue mountain resorts case study Essay
Blue Mountain resorts (Data collection)
1. Problem definition
Blue Mountain Resorts were first built in 1941, and it is the largest family operated ski resort in
Canada. The major problem in this case is that the CEO of the Blue Mountain Resorts has to decide
whether to install facilitates or not for the night skiing in 1979 1980 winter skiing season.
Maintaining comfortable capacity at ski resort is very important in this field of market. The
capacity depends on the hill size, hill development, and lift facilities. Therefore, to provide the
night skiing service, investing in hills and lifts are important factors. So, if the CEO decides to
install the night skiing facilities, he needs to decide the price of the single night lift ticket ... Show

Among 2 intermediate levels, one advanced, and one beginner and intermediate level, one
should be chosen. I suggest the intermediate level to be opened since the night ski uses would
mostly intermediate high level users rather than beginners, and advanced level at night would
be somehow dangerous. The operating cost would be $1000 per night, adding seasonal
allocation of $20,000 fixed cost, $7.75 liability insurance per 1000 skiers, and $5000 for
promotional cost. Therefore, the cost of operating night skiing is,
$1000*120days+$20,000+$5000+$7.75*30= $145,232.50 per year.
$135,000+$145,232.50=$280,232.50. The frequency of night skiing in cross tabulation of pass
holder status was mostly 1 10 times per year. They will come for two or more days. The profit
calculation will be approximately 2days* 5 times* $5.50=$55.0 per people for a year. 30,000
people*30%*$55= $495,000 per year. This profit exceeds the cost, so the company should invest in
facilitating the night skiing.
The next step is to decide the type of the season pass and the ticket price. It could offer the
special night skiing season pass or combine it with the original day time season pass. For
example, three types of the passes which are; day pass, night pass, or combined pass. On the
night skiing survey, fair price showed to be $5 for midweek nights and $6 for weekend nights.
Most people anticipated their skiing days a year to 1 5 or more than 20. Also, the

The Impact Of Agricultural Innovation On Farm...
Introduction
Technology has helped farming for the positive by: increasing yield productivity, using GPS
tracking to decrease human error, and using drones to create maps. Now how is technology able
to do all these things you may ask, it s simple. According to the website Pressroom , A new report
by the International Food Policy Research Institute measures the impacts of agricultural
innovation on farm productivity, prices, hunger, and trade flows as we approach 2050 and
identifies practices which could significantly benefit developing nations ( Agricultural
Technologies Could Increase Global Crop Yields as Much as 67 Percent and Cut Food Prices
Nearly in Half by 2050 , 2014, p. 1). Another website states the following on drones by ... Show

Now what happens if you can t buy the best available seed treatments in technology? No problem.
According to the website Beale (2015) it states, If farmers can be helped to obtain simple
technologies, income can rise, and they can accumulate bank balances and collateral (p. 1). As
shown, you don t need all the high expensive technology to make a profit, all you need is
something simple in technology to change your yield productivity for the better. For many years
farmers have dealt with problems during plantations season whether it be droughts, insects, or other
issues, but what if technology could help you with that? GM traits, such as insect and herbicide
tolerance, help to increase yields by protecting the yield that would otherwise be lost due to insects
or weeds (Do GM crops increase Yield?, 2012, p.1). Thanks to recent help by technology, farmers
have been able to reduce this problem by using genetically modifying crops, allowing them to
increase their yields dramatically for the better. If it wasn t for all these extraordinary
technological help that there is today in the world of farming, it wouldn t be as easy or efficient
for farmers, thus not allowing farming to be where it is today.
GPS Decreasing Human Error Thanks to technology in farming, GPS helps the productivity of a
farm, helps stop human errors, and helps fields. The technology in GPS can help a lot in farming,
according to Virginia Tech University farming expert, Tim Mize, who states, With

The Impact Of Animals On Endangering Animals
Text A, a transcript from a British radio station, is discussing how people should be more cautious
about hurting endangered species especially dolphins appealing to environmentalist and listeners of
the radio station. Meanwhile Text B, an entry from Encyclopedia Britannica, is informing
Environmentalist and humans in general about the destruction of the environments and animals
caused by humans. Both authors use the overall purpose to attract the same audienceis similar in
both articles, but the articles differ in overall diction, syntax, tone, and several other textual
features. While Text A and Text B have the same overall purpose of explaining and informing the
audiences of the impact of humans on animals, both texts have different endangered speciesto prove
that topic. In Text A, the author proves that animals are endangered because of humans with giving
the example of Hector Dolphins. The article provides the audience with alarming evidence that the
Hector Dolphin population is very endangered because of fishermen leaving gill nets . While this is
important example, the Hector Dolphin, provides the audience with evidence supporting main
topic, this example differentiates from Text B s example of Amphibians. The entry, Text B, gives
the example of the Amphibian population experiencing a serious reductions in conservation status
because of amphibians being particularly sensitive to climate changes. Both examples prove the
problem of humans endangering animals

  • 2. SГёren Kierkegaard People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use. Lets go back to when men valued thought, for they valued its effect on the world, lets go back and take a look at the father of Christian Existentialism, SГёren Kierkegaard. SГёren Kierkegaard was born to a father who inflicted strict and rigorous religious teaching upon his children. His father felt this was necessary because of his sinful habit that resulted in an affair with his 1st wife s maid. Kierkegaard, after a broken engagement with his love, was handed over to a life of severe melancholy. Yet as a result of both his personal pain and brilliant mind, a literary life few could surpass, and wisdom of thought (does that make sense) ensued.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His answer was summarized in three words, Fear and Trembling. This is something that he spent an immense amount of time answering, and his answers can be condensed into the example that he gave from the Old Testament in the Bible. He gives Christians an example in which to follow, in the patriarch Abraham. The example that Abraham gives, and we are to follow, is found in how Abraham responds to the command to kill his son. For man, especially a father, this command is unfathomable, yet because God wanted to test Abraham (give better reasoning), he told him to sacrifice his son. Kierkegaard looks at Genesis 22:2, it says, He said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. He notes the unbearable precision in the command, when God says take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love (emphasis added) Kierkegaard also takes a close look at the beginning of the next verse, it says, So Abraham rose early in the morning. He notes that some men take this excerpt to men that Abraham was rising early to faithfully carry out his duty. And while that has some truth to it, it is not complete, Kierkegaard emphasizes the fact that he rose early, not because he got a great night of sleep, rather that he wrestled with this command in ... • 3. The Mental Health Service Act Mental health illnesses have been around since interrelated relationships have been present in society. The treatment of this illness has evolved immensely throughout history. Early on, those who were mentally ill were demonized and thought to be an all mighty evil, which had the ability to be passed on to others. Due to this ideology, many people shunned, and banished those who were thought to be mentally handicapped. In order to protect society from these beasts many people imprisoned mentally ill individuals and were stripped of the ability to live their lives. Fortunately, as society progressed and different ways of treating the mentally ill were established through scientific advancements. Along with these advances, treatment for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mental illness dates back to the 1800 s. Most who were determined to have a mental illness were placed in prisons, or chambers to protect society as they were seen as wild and dangerous. There was no real change to the treatment of mentally ill individuals until Dorothea Dix, a schoolteacher and American activist, began a movement to change the way the mentally ill were seen and treated in society. Centers, or institutions were built to reside mentally ill individuals to fully care and provide treatment for them. Unfortunately, many of these institutions were closed down due to improper care of the patients by the staff, an uneven staff to client ratio, and the institutions were underfunded. Society began to realize that this particular population was unable to fully care for themselves as many of those who were deinstitutionalized from the institutions were left homeless, broke and untreated. An individual, Clifford Beers, who experienced first hand the abuse and maltreatment of those who were institutionalized, sparked a mental health reform movement with an autobiography, A Mind That Found Itself, which tells about the time he spent within the institution. His autobiography began the movement towards many historic Acts that would help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Radiation And Its Effects On Children While healthy babies are born every day, not everyone is so fortunate. In many cases, diagnostic radiology is required for patients during their childhood. Can having this radiation during the formative years lead to adverse effects later in life? The biggest concern from radiation is the risk of cancer. Cancercan occur at any dose from ionizing radiationbecause it is a stochastic effect, meaning that it is probabilistic. The probability of a stochastic effect, such as cancer, increases as the dose increases. While receiving this radiation may be necessary, it can cause some serious trouble later in life, such as breast cancer, leukemia, and thyroid cancer. These adverse effects could happen at any age; however, there is an increased... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is 4.5 years worth of background radiation1 (10). With pediatric patients receiving multiple exams, this amount of radiation can quickly add up and cause serious concerns later in life. One potential stochastic effect that can occur with ionizing radiation is thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer is the 5th most common cancer in women. The diagnosis of thyroid malignancy has increased worldwide in the last few decades and is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the United States with a 5.1% increase from 2003 to 2012. Common symptoms of thyroid cancer are a lump on the neck, a tight feeling in the neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hoarseness, and swollen lymph nodes. However in many cases, no symptoms arise and the cancer is diagnosed because an abnormality is seen on an imaging test being performed for another reason2. At this time, it is not clear how much diagnostic radiation is contributing to the increase in thyroid cancer cases. It is possible that the increase in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer can be attributed to a greater rate of detection by use of ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration3. The thyroid tissue itself is among the tissues that are less sensitive to radiation, however, thyroid cancer is still such a concern because the thyroid is so superficial in the body1 (77). Even doses as small as 50 100 mGy have been associated with an increased risk of thyroid malignancy in children, with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As many sensors can be exposed to attacks, we need to be sure about the validity of the received data and to get the accurate position inspite of the presence of attack. We address the problem of detecting malicious attacks to the sensors of a WiFi fingerprinting network. Here, we suggest a novel algorithm to detect the attackusing statistical measurement. We expose our data to a spoofing attack algorithm to see the effect of our attack detection algorithm. We are able to enhance the prediction of locations in presence of attack by using our detection scheme. Keywords WiFi fingerprinting, Localization, RSSI, Security, Cyber physical I. I NTRODUCTION The term cyber physical systems (CPS) refers to a new systems with integrated computational and physical capa bilities that can interact with humans through many new modalities [1]. CPS have been at the core of critical in frastructures and industrial control systems for years. CPS are becoming more vulnerable to computer attacks for many reasons [3]. There are many challenges for securing cyber physical systems [2]. Indoor localization is an example of cyber physical systems. For outdoor localization, a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) such as Global Positioning System (GPS) can be used. However, GPS is not suitable for indoor environments as the satellite signals cannot penetrate walls or roof of buildings [10] [11]. Indoor localization ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dogmatism is exemplified on this movie soundtrack cover as it is exposes the observer to first a highlighted Warhol tinged title. One fact that contradicts this hidden reasoning is there is more than one America, and the Americas are indigenous to many races and cultures. An additional example of the one sided attitude marketers had towards the promotion of this advertisement is its stereotypical image of how many people in the world perceives North American women to be. This title plays upon all people wanting to fit in of the idea of what they perceive beauty to be. As it also echoes the sexist fifties symbols of pinup girls. In this image it seems that roses can be smelt as well as draw upon other senses. This ad unwillingly touches the inner emotions in all who view it. • 9. New Media In The Turn Within By Susan J. Douglas New media is a less traditional version of media resulting from the digitization of almost everything. Compared to its predecessor, new media is instantaneous, interactive, and universally accessible. The largest aspect of new media is social media. It s role in today s media environment presents an interesting paradox. On one hand, social mediais rather limiting. It is incredibly easy to tailor one s online experience to their personal beliefs and perspective. At the same time, social media presents the opportunity to connect with the worldat large. To say that new media allows for one but the not the other would be incorrect. Today s society is one that both reveres and fears social media, leaving people in an interesting position. In her essay The Turn Within , Susan J. Douglas discusses how communications technologies have led to an inward, narcissistic scope instead of creating a global village in which the world is bound together. There are oftentimes calls for a return to old media due to (somewhat unfounded) fears of newer media making people anti social and self absorbed. There are a number of people use social media for things other than sharing pictures. • 10. How Does Jetblue Compare And Contrast Virgin Southwest And... 2. Competitive Environment JetBlue has been recognized for offering cheap flights to business travelers, in the same way that other airlines come up with similar offers for different types of travelers. In 2009, (case study) JetBlue was on top of the list of the low cost carriers. The airline is classified as a major carrier, which means their annual revenue starts at $1 billion, JetBlue has a $3 billion revenue, still and all it is mentioned that JetBlue is smaller in comparison to other major airlines. Over the years, one of the main competitors of jetBlue has been Southwest. In a 2009 report it was mentioned that two other low cost airlines, Virgin America and SkyBus, were some of the biggest competitors for jetBlue (case study); however, a 2013 analysis might have suggested in some way that JetBlue was about to have new airlines to compete with, Singapore Airlines and Emirates Airlines, by introducing new features and technological innovation in their offerings (Popova, 2013). Airlines are implementing these improvements in order to attract more customers that look for comfort, but at the same time affordability. It can increase the competitivity, but it is not noticeable immediately. Even though, JetBlue is not directly competing with other international airlines, a comparison and contrast with competitors such as Southwest and Virgin America can be seen in small, but important details such as the baggage allowance. JetBlue has fare options in order to find out the amount of baggages admitted, the first fare is called Blue Flex, and it allows to bring a maximum of two checked bags under 50 pounds at no cost, a third bag would cost $100; the second one, the Blue Plus fare allows only one bag under 50 pounds, a second bag has a cost of $35, and a third bag would cost $100; the third and last fare is called Blue and the first checked bag under 50 pounds has a cost of $25, the second bag $35 and a third or fourth bag would cost $100 (JetBlue, 2017). Fifty percent of all marriages will end in divorce and each year 2 million children are newly introduced to their parents separation, (Monthly Vital Statistics Report ). Demographers predict that by the beginning of the next decade the majority of the youngsters under 18 will spend part of their childhood in single parent families, many created by divorce. They are saddened, sometimes beyond repair, at seeing so few of their own needs gratified, (p. 41). Judith Wallerstein also found that divorce has long lasting psychological effect on many children, one that in fact, may turn out to be permanent. Children of divorce have vivid memories about their parens separation. The details are etched permanently in their minds, more than any other experiences in their lives. She also identified the sleeper effect as another long term implication of divorce. It is a delayed reaction to an event that happened many years earlier, (p.60). She saw many young women with acute, delayed depression which she defines as the sleeper effect and warns of it s danger. It occurs when many young women are about to make decisions that have long term implications for their lives. Memorable examples of this were seen during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 14 days in 1962 when the United States and the Soviet Union squared off over the placement of Russian missiles in Cuba, and the four days reportage of the assassination and funeral of John F. Kennedy. The same was true with news coverage of the U.S. space program, especially the Moon landing in July 1969. These views include: cognitive, behavioral, cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, biological, and humanistic (Comer, 2014). Some of the approaches used include the Orff approach, Dalcroze approach, Kodaly approach, Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music, and Nordoff Robbins approach (Darrow, 2008). Darrow explained the different philosophies, populations, and applications of these diverse approaches. In music therapy, the theory that is practiced by a music therapist will determine the types of approaches and terms used and how they use them. The approaches used will also affect how they interact with clients. The different approaches can elicit very different interactions with clients (Darrow). There are three main theories used in therapy. These three main theories are known as psychodynamic, behavioral, and humanistic. The psychodynamic view is based on repressed thoughts and feelings, the behavioral view is based on behaviors, and the humanistic view is based on self actualization (Comer, 2014). Each of these views will be further explored as I piece together my own personal philosophy and views on each main theory. The first theory, psychodynamic, was developed by Sigmund Freud. While analyzing significant rebellions within the American colonies, one aspect persists throughout: one culture s assumption that it is superior to another, prompting an attempt to impose that group s cultureand way of life over the other. In Metacom s War, the Stono Rebellion, and the Salem Witch Trials, that common theme is evident and corresponds to Bailyn s quote, It was the intermingling of [barbarity] and developing civilization that is the central characteristic of the world that was emerging in America. However, the question remains: who are the barbarians and who are the civilized? In each of the rebellions there is a clear historical tendency to label groups; indeed, it must be noted that viewpoint is of utmost importance when evaluating such events, if one is to truly understand the plight of the barbarianand the civilized. That said, by dissecting the quote, and analyzing these three events, it is clear that each rebellion was the result of cultural ignorance and, as a consequence, a sort of death occurred in each culture for Metacom s war, culture and tradition, for Stono, African freedom, and for Salem, the Puritan utopia. In order to fully comprehend the historical implications, it is necessary to first discuss the language which the quote uses and analyze how it applies to each of the three rebellions more specifically, the ... • 19. The Myth Of Jap The Creation Story Of Shinto The creation story of Shinto builds more appreciation and respect for the kami as well. The creation myth can be found in the Kojiki and it begins with the two gods, Izanagi and Izanami. The two gods are husband and wife, whom through Izanami, gave birth to the Japan s islands, the kami of the earth, and the kami of heaven. Throughout Izanami s various pregnancies, the birth of Ho musubi or Fire growth was what birthed the most kami. During Ho musabi s birth he burned his mother making her fall ill. Izanami created kami that personified water, metal and clay through her urine, vomit, and feces. Afterwards Izanami died and her husband, Izanagi, in a fit of grief slew another kami which in turn generated more kami. The two creation gods are responsible for the creation of the other kami, and in one interpretation, responsible for the birth of the sun goddess Amaterasu(Sandvik). Izanagi and Izanami created the natural world that the humans live in, they are the reason kami exist, and in the long term Japan s history. The nature aspect of Shintoism is connected to the belief that kami exist within nature and hold the source of life. According to Rosemarie Bernard, author of Shintoand Ecology, the goal of Shintoism is to prevent the natural world from devolving into a state of chaos without disturbing the kami and nature. It is the goal of shintoists to maintain balance with the kami and natural world (Bernard). The way Shintoism achieved this balance was through a variety of forms of purification. These forms of purification purified areas designed for the kami. The houses designed for the kami are called yuniwa, which translates to purified yard or court, these houses are usually sacred enclosures with rocks placed in the center. However, yoshiro is designed with the purpose of manifesting the physical form of the kami while yuniwa is designed to welcome the kami to shrines. Shrines protect itself from outside forces through shimenawa. Shimenawas protected sacred areas by using a plaited straw rope that could be seen hanging from the front of a Shinto shrine. The ceremonies involving purification include the two concepts of seimei, translated it means clean and happy, and seichoku, translated means right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Physics Cantilever Lab Independent Assessment Physics Lab (SL): Cantilever Flexion Cherno Okafor Mr. Ebrahimi SPH4U7 October 21st, 2012 Introduction Purpose: The purpose of this Physics Lab is to investigate what factors determine the amount of flexion of the cantilever. Hence, the objective is to establish a relationship between the length of a cantilever, which may give some insight into the physics of cantilevers. Hypothesis: If one increases the length of a cantilever, one would expect there to be an increase in deflection/flexion of the cantilever. Similarly, if one increases the massof the load, one would expect there to be an increase in the deflexion/flexion of the cantilever. In addition, I predict that proportionality will also occur ... This will be measured indirectly by measuring the initial height of the bottom of the cantilever with no mass added (which is equal to the height of the table) and the new height of the bottom of the cantilever after each trial, which will be measured with mass added. Hence, the difference between these heights is equal to the deflection/flexion of the cantilever. The material and other physical properties of the cantilever will be controlled by using the same yardstick as a cantilever for each trial. As a designer and a student of Vitruvius and of ancient Roman remains, he grasped the nature of column and lintel architecture, from the visual rather than structural viewpoint. Some of his other major accomplishments through his years was through the influence on ancient rome architecture, he designed many buildings such as the The Tempio Malatestiano (aka, the Church of San Francesco). Alberti also designed the New Facade of Santa Maria Novella, Florence in 1456. In his architecture, he had the intention of using their symbolic content and associations to ennoble a modern building and give it the sense of having a Renaissance culture feel to almost all of the buildings he would construct. As one once said about Alberti s work, The result of the distinction is a new emphasis on building mass totally unlike, even alien to Brunelleschi s architecture at San Lorenzo that so carefully emphasized plane, space, and line. This phenomenon indicates the consumers adamant belief in the superior quality of Kodak film. There were two different viewpoints on the relevant geographic product market for film discussed in the case. According to the district court, the relevant geographic market for film is worldwide, since foreign manufactures sell considerable amounts of film in the United States and Kodak s market share is only 36% globally. The people of Oran become prisoners of the plague and the whole city becomes quarantined by the Prefect when death tolls hit 30 people a day. It can be questioned whether they were really free before the plague, considering the way they lived out their lives from day to day. Every day the populace would wake up work and then gamble in the evenings and a lot of people in Orantake their loved ones for granted. Paradox In Catch 22 In Catch 22, Joseph Heller uses paradoxes, selfishness, self destruction, and miscommunication to satirize and provoke changes in war and the military establishment through a pilot, Yossarian, whose only goal has become to escape the traps created by bureaucracy before it kills him. Heller uses irrationality to portray the waste and justification that takes place in the military. The court martial uses a paradox to assert guilt instead of any real evidence. He wouldn t be on trial if he wasn t guilty. This irrationality contrasts with the idea of the rule of law. It is indicative of the lack of thinking and individuality from the judge. The judge is not the only character to behave insanely. According to critic Louis Hasley, There are no good guys in this book. Too high ranked to sit with the enlisted men, not enough experience to sit with the officers, The isolation leads to a vast amount of waste and confusion caused by Major Major in his irrational promotion. This small segment of imagery supports the theme, because the horse is anxious and impatient as if it has waited a long time to be here and take Tom away to what he deserves. The reader can imagine a horse that is rearing and ready to go. It demonstrates that even if Tom protected himself for a little while the Devil still came back to dispense the consequences for the deal he and Tom made together. Tom worked as a usurer to gain a large fortune that he wanted, just so he could flaunt it in an ostentatious manner. However he wanted to get this money easily by bartering with the Devil to find an agreement that made him rich quickly. The Function Of Respiratory System According to Melinda (2014), the function of respiratory system is to supply oxygen into the body, by breathing in, and to remove carbon dioxide which is the waste, from the body, by breathing out. Franklin (2014), outlines that oxygen is most needed in the body, in order to live. This is because every cell in the body needs oxygen, in order to function properly. Also, oxygen is required in the blood in order to covert food into energy. Beside, Melinda (2014), clarifies that these movements are named inspiration (breathing in) and expiration (breathing out). However, Zimmermann (2014), elaborates that the key purpose of respiratory systemis gaseous substitute. He also simplifies that within respiratory system, new air is always brought into the body, and the used air is expelled out. In this way, oxygen is picked up and carbon dioxide is lost by the body. Furthermore, Waugh (2014), illuminates that air tremendously travels through the nostrils in the nose, which is filtered, warmed and moistened. He simplifies that tiny hairs, called Cilia looks after the nasal pathways and other parts of the respiratory area. Waugh (2014), elucidated that the oxygen is filters out dirt and other particles that enter the nose through the breath in air. He simplifies that air can possibly be breathed in through the mouth as another way of breathing. However, Kara (2010), clarifies that the two airways of the nose and mouth come across to the pharynx, which is positioned at the back of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Problems Associated With Urban Noise Pollution Introduction Urban noise pollution is causing increased health risks in the population. This is due both to the fact that noise levels, particularly those associated with transport, have increased dramatically since the mid twentieth century and that a higher percentage of the world population is now concentrated in urban systems. This problem has also increased economic costs due to failing health and reduced productivity of the population, affecting between 0.2% and 2% of gross domestic product in the US. In the European Union, the costs range between $13 billion and $38 billion per year. In addition, traffic noise causes the depreciation of properties exposed to high noise levels. As a starting point, vehicles were classified into the following categories: motorcycles, cars (including cars, trucks, small delivery vans and microbuses), buses, mini buses (small buses) and trucks (over 3 tons). Subsequently, we conducted measurements of single noise on the streets of the city (n = 533 vehicles), seeking to exclude the impact of other vehicles and other sources of noise. To this end, we used an integrated Extech type II sound level meter (SLM) to evaluate the instantaneous sound level (Li,1sec) during the approach and passage of each vehicle in front of the SLM on roads with 1 and 2 lanes. These measurements followed conventional techniques and were conducted using a tripod and a windscreen at a height of 1.2 m at a distance of 1 m from the road with A and slow weights. In parallel, we gauged the pace at which every vehicle was voyaging utilizing manual Bushnell supplies. In all cases, the predominating conditions included level, dry streets, wind speeds short of what 4 km/h and a low frequency of other clamor sources. For each type of vehicle, we conducted a regression analysis between the maximum noise level (when passing in front of the SLM) and speed. Because this yielded low coefficients of determination, we implemented classification trees to dissociate subgroups depending on the speed of vehicles. Subsequently, we averaged all noise levels recorded in each subgroup at time zero (passing in front of the SLM) and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Be Allowed One of the most debated topics in all of sports is whether performance enhancing drugs should be allowed. According to the free dictionary, performance enhancing drugs is defined as Any drug used to gain an advantage in sports. Such drugs may improve endurance or strength or accelerate healing after injury . Performance enhancing drugs was first acknowledged as a problem in professional sports in 1967 when the international Olympic committee created a medical board due to the heightened use. Today there are seven types of performance enhancers including: stimulants, narcotics, anabolic androgenic steroids, beta 2 agonists, peptide hormones, diuretics, blood doping. That number might seem small but there is a massive amount of variety within these drugs that is causing more and more athletes every year to use them. Performance enhancing drugs should be illegal because of the unfair advantage, health risks, and the lack of role models that athletes would play. Sports have been around since the beginning of time. As the games age and become more popular, they start to evolve and become more competitive at the same time. This evolution comes from better strategies, techniques, and ultimately the athletes themselves. In today s modern era of sports, professional athletes are the most elite people in their field, always wanting to be better than anyone else. With every athlete striving to become one of the greatest to ever play, some want to take short cuts. These short cuts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Impact Of Overfishing On Marine Ecosystems And Human Culture Introduction Overfishing occurs when fish are being caught faster than they can reproduce and replace themselves (Lee and Safina, 1995, pg.5). It greatly affects biodiversity of marine ecosystems and human culture. Impacts of Overfishing Overfishing can impact marine ecosystems and communities that rely heavily on marine mammals. Large reductions in population sizes of marketable fish species caught yearly may significantly create economic stress within fishing communities, especially if they mainly rely on fish for income or food, such as 3rd world countries. If marketable fish population numbers drop too low fishermen and even whole communities may be forced to give up their way of life, which has been passed down from generation to generation, and find jobs elsewhere (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2009). Loss of income and jobs is caused from decreased population sizes, which lower productive fish stocks, and results in business closures and lowered economic status (Lee and Safina, 1995). Food security is also affected by overfishing. Many coastal communities depend on fish as their main food source. When consumable fish populations decrease the food supplies and food availability also decrease, resulting in shortages to occur and fish becoming an unreliable source of food (World Wildlife Fund, 2016). Overfishing significantly impacts biodiversity within ecosystems. Marine life imbalance is produced when fishing of top predators disrupts communities within the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For many years farmers have dealt with problems during plantations season whether it be droughts, insects, or other issues, but what if technology could help you with that? GM traits, such as insect and herbicide tolerance, help to increase yields by protecting the yield that would otherwise be lost due to insects or weeds (Do GM crops increase Yield?, 2012, p.1). Thanks to recent help by technology, farmers have been able to reduce this problem by using genetically modifying crops, allowing them to increase their yields dramatically for the better.
