Abstract
Learning a new language can be difficult for anyone. It is especially difficult for students who are
expected to learn a new culture and different subjects at the same time. The article this paper
references discusses ways teachers can help their students learn a new language and the stages those
students experience as they become proficient in their new language.
Introduction
This paper summarizes the article, Changing Lives: Teaching English and literature to ESL students,
in which Gisela Ernst Slavit, Monica Moore, and Carol Maloney discuss how teachers can help
secondary school students, whose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students who are more introverted may observe and listen to others until they are more confident of
what to say. Teachers need to understand that the outgoing student may not be as fluent as he or she
seems to be and that the more introverted student may be more proficient in their second language
than they appear to be. Although it will take time, both types of students will learn to speak their
second language proficiently. While these students are learning, they will make mistakes. The article
states that if teachers correct the mistakes directly, it may discourage students from trying out their
new language skills. Modeling the correct language is a much better way of correcting mistakes then
using direct correction. One of the best ways to help students learn a second language is to use a
variety of settings that promote talk and interaction. These not only help students understand new
concepts, but they also help to provide a foundation for learning through reading and writing. Since
literacy is part of language, reading and writing develop alongside speaking and listening. Students
who spend time talking and listening to each other and working on reading and writing activities are
able to develop more proficiency in all language modes. There is are predictable stages of linguistic
and cultural processes that students who are learning a second language go through. The teacher needs
to be able to identify the stage the student is in so that they are

What Is The Most Regretful Experience Essay
Everyone has had to deal with some sort of regret in their life. It has to happen to everyone. No one
can say that they have never had a time where they regretted something. That s like saying you are a
perfect human being. Well, reality is that no one is perfect. It is impossible for someone to go
throughout life without any mistakes and or regret. Everyone is human and humans make mistakes
constantly. Some regretful experiences can leave a big impact on ones life. It can be totally life
changing and sometimes change a person totally. Others just regret it and feel nothing else towards it.
They will most likely do it again. My experience is very much life changing. Or at least it changed my
point of view. I remember my situation clearly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Improper Antibiotic Use Antibiotics have been the answer to many bacterial infections for the past 70
years (Antibiotic/ Antimicrobial Resistance). Antibiotics are medicines used to treat infections or
diseases caused by bacteria ( What are Antibiotics? ). Antibiotics were prescribed to cure many
diseases. Doctors prescribed many antibiotics during World War II. World War II was the start of the
antibiotic era. Just when antibiotics were being greatly produced, bacteria started to evolve and
became resistant to these medicines. What is antibiotic resistance? According to the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, Antibiotic resistance occurs when an antibiotic has lost its ability to
effectively control or kill bacterial growth ( General Background ). Improper use of antibiotics causes
antibiotic resistance and has many effects associated with it. People may be drug abusers and this can
cause resistance in the body. Some people will only take antibiotics because they believe it is the only
way they will get better. When a person uses drugs to get rid of a sickness they may start to
overcompensate, but when they do, the drug may have less of an effect because the body has become
so used to the drugs medicine. That is because the bacteria has found a way to avoid the effects of the
antibiotic. The appropriate use of antibiotics, often called antibiotic stewardship, can help preserve the
effectiveness

Summary Of Appiah s Death Of The Duel
In the first half of Death of the Duel, Appiah begins by providing the details of a duel between two
prominent British government officials, using the specific example as a jumping point to discuss the
general idea of dueling. The form of honor being represented in this case is that of reputation and the
maintenance of regard from the general public. This concept of honor as a form of social standing is
interesting because it subverts Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs and many other psychological theories
that try to map out human instinct which places safety and security in higher regard than it does
esteem or ego. In the case of the duel, honor is considered the highest human need, even above life
itself if one considers the death toll, although that mainly applies to the aristocratic class, who had
most of their basic needs taken care of already. In the case of dueling, the society at the time seemed
to conflate the ideas of respect and honor, assuming that the characteristic of honorability
automatically entitled one to respect from peers and lower classes. Appiah, however, distinguishes the
two by noting that honor is the individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Appiah believes there is only pride in doing things out of the ordinary, I believe that it also
takes courage and honor to follow honor codes in everyday circumstances. Being honorable is difficult
sin a world where honorable behavior, contrary to Appiah s belief, is not actually standard behavior.
For example, a student witnesses two bullies harassing another student and steps in to stop them.
While this might be fairly standard honorable behavior, that does not mean the student shouldn t feel
proud of their actions and the courage they took. The pride doesn t detract from the previously
honorable actions. In his argument, Appiah seems to conflate the idea of pride personal satisfaction
with vanity and the need to boost reputation, which I hold to be two separate

Raymond Bamhart Definition Of Ethics Essay
What is Ethics
Ethical behavior, an action a human may find challenging to balance in one s life. One is encompassed
with daily decisions to choose right from wrong. For example, being late for work, one may decide to
speed to get to work on time, knowing if you re late for work again you could lose your job. So one
may decide to get to work on time, regardless of the consequences of possibly getting a ticket, causing
an accident and putting the lives of others in danger which could be one s worst nightmare. How does
one define ethics?
Raymond Baumhart, a sociologist gave insight on what Ethics means in his viewpoint. He had
mentioned that when feelings are put into the equation, it can have drawbacks of doing what is
morally correct. Also, putting Religion in an Ethical review can undermine the one s that do not
believe or have different beliefs. Religion will give some people inner peace, and it may give the
foundation to think morally, but religion and ethics are not equivalent. Furthermore, laws are put into
place to maintain some structure of what is acceptable in the eyes of the law, ... Show more content on

Having a foundation of supporting and morally correct role models will instill the values to act with
good intentions. Also, ethics to me is acts of kindness and compassion. I strongly believe to treat
others how you want to be treated. However, there will always be situations where one will have to
make the choice of choosing one decision over the other to protect what you think is morally correct at
the time. For example, a doctor might think he has a medical moral obligation whereas the family may
override the Doctor s moral dilemma and deal with the consequences. Some people may feel
intimidated by one s status, but if one is taught strong values at the beginning of life, deciding the right
thing to do, may just be second nature to

Response On The Sisters Brothers
The Sisters Brothers Novel Response
Throughout the novel, The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt, the two brothers, Eli and Charlie, are
shown as complete opposites in their personalities. This results in one being likable and the other
detestable.
Eli is a more likable character than Charlie since the reader has more access to Eli s emotions as the
story is written through Eli s eyes. The writer uses the first person point of view writing style to allow
the reader to gain an insight into Eli s thoughts. It also allows the reader to follow him through other
experiences he goes on without his brother. This writing style allows you to feel as if you are in Eli s
head. During their journey to California, Eli meets a woman who he fancies. They enter her room and
she beg[ins] looking at the door as if wishing to leave.
Come sit beside me, I said. I would like to talk to you.

These traits would not have been found if the book were to have been written in Charlie s point of
view since Charlie was not present. Throughout the novel, Eli has to put up with his brother s
selfishness and impoliteness several times. Charlie s treatment results in the reader being sympathetic
towards Eli. Charlie speaks of his brother as if he is childish and weak, however, this is not true, as
there have been many instances where Eli has taken care of Charlie when he has carelessly gotten

The Key That Unites Us All
Anna Bradstreet, Jonathan Edwards, and many writers had faith in religion, but others like Benjamin
Franklin had faith in science. I believe that in order to find inner peace, people must learn to accept
things for what they actually are. People do not need to have faith in religion to find their inner peace.
Before reading this letter, I have not given much thought into the thing that unites all humans
intellectually. This letter made me recognize that the key that unites us all is acceptance. Acceptance
can be accomplished through factors other than religion. I established this thought while reading
Bradstreet s letter to her children. It made me realize that religion is not what kept people going
through their tough times, but it was their faith that played an enormous role in people s peace of
mind. Furthermore, many writers in her time hoped to benefit future generations by sharing their
experiences.
Bradstreet s aim was to communicate to her children the power and the glory of God (Bradstreet 235).
Within her poem, she emphasized on how she would occasionally abandon her prayers and forget
God, only to have found that she forgot and lost herself as well and found herself troubled (Bradstreet
236). She improved herself by being obedient to God and tried to avoid all sins. I was able to link her
beliefs and attempts at self improvement with Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin. Both
Edwards and Bradstreet continuously tried to improve themselves morally and

New Jersey V. Cocuzza Case Study
Before PTSD became an official diagnosis, various other traumatic stress syndromes such as
dissociative flashbacks and survivor guilt were used as criminal defenses for both violent/nonviolent
crimes as well as a basis for successful insanity defenses. Initially PTSD raised concerns about its
potential misuse in criminal courts, however, there were certain incidences where PTSD was found to
be a legitimate phenomenon. Case in point, New Jersey v Cocuzza (1981). In this case, the defendant
was a Vietnam veteran who was found not guilty for reason of insanity when he assaulted a police
officer. Mr. Cocuzza s defense was that at the time of the incident, he believed that he was attacking
enemy soldiers. His claims were supported by the officer when he testified that Mr. Cocuzza was
holding a stick as if it were a rifle. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In certain incidences such as the New Jersey v Cocuzza case, I do not believe the actions performed
were voluntary. However, in other cases, I have mixed emotions such as the case of Babbit v
Calderon. With the information provided, I would agree with the appellate court s decision and find
that Mr. Babbit s actions were indeed voluntary.
My reasons derive from the way the evidence was presented in this case. On a December night, Babbit
broke into Leah Schendel s apartment and brutally beat and sexually assaulted her. Her cause of death
was determined to be heart failure caused by the stress related to the incident. The following night,
Babbit robbed and attempted to rape another woman, Mavis Wilson. In my opinion, a person who is
able to commit such crimes not once but twice on two different occasions, has the mental capability to
understand the potential risks and outcomes of their

Mass Shooting Persuasive Speech
The devastating mass shooting at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon, inspires President
Barack Obama to take the podium in outrage Thursday, to express his grievances and to call for
tougher gun control. America will wrap everyone who s grieving with our prayers and our love, said
the president, to a nation plagued by mass shootings. The heartbreaking incident was number 295 in
2015, according to Mass Shooting Tracker s database. The unparalleled amount of mass shootings
traumatizes the nation and engulfing it in sorrow time and time again. The president accentuates the
fact that such tragedies are becoming a norm in American communities. Somehow this has become

The president argued that trillions of dollars are spent protecting the nation against terrorism and yet,
Congress explicitly blocks any attempt on collecting data to potentially reduce gun deaths. We
collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction, he
said. The devoted president even succumbed to criticize his own nation s ability to maintain harmony.
The rampant growth of gun violence can be attributed to the sheer amount of weapons present in the
country. There is a gun for roughly every man, woman, and child in America, the president said.
Hence increasing the odds of a potential mass shooting. He further noted that other countries are far
more efficient in response to mass shootings. They have crafted laws that almost eliminate them
altogether. However, to achieve similar results in America, the president requires the support of the
Congress and state legislatures. We re going to have to change our laws. And this is not something I

United States Involvement In The Vietnam War
In the beginning, the United States always pushed forth the idea they were becoming involved in the
war in Vietnam in order to send out aid to France, who was an ally of theirs. After the United Nations
began setting up a plan to help France, the United States suggested splitting up the Communist and
Democratic portions of Vietnam, with the communists having control over the North, while the
Kennedy administration continued to send military aid to the Southern portions of Vietnam.
In the end, the United States main objective in becoming involved in the Vietnam War was to prevent
the spread of communism in the region. After the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which occurred when North
Vietnamese patrol boats fired on an American ship that they had discovered conducting a spy mission
off the coast of North Vietnam, current United States President Johnson used the incident to eventually
get authority from Congress to send more US troops into Vietnam. Slowly over time, the anti war
sentiment against the Vietnam War continued to grow amongst the American people. Many Americans

The Doctrine Of Promissory Estoppel
Another aspect we must consider is the part payment of debt in order to understand how the doctrine
of promissory estoppel can be used to aid a debtor. The general rule regarding part payment of debt, at
common law, is that it is not good consideration to pay a lesser sum. If the debtor does not pay the
creditor all that he owns, the debtor has an obligation to pay the full amount. The general rule was
established in the Pinnel s case where paying a lesser sum does not form a binding contract as there
was no fresh consideration. However, within the part payment rule, there are some exceptions. The
main exception which we will be focusing on is the equity exception involving the doctrine of
promissory estoppel, where the promise to pay a lesser sum is binding even if there is no
consideration.
As mentioned above the principle of promissory estoppel was introduced first in the Hughes v
Metropolitan Railway. In this case Hughes had rented a property, which he owns, to the Metropolitan
Railway Company. The tenants therefore had a six month notice to fix any repairs. However during
this notice period negotiations about buying the building from Hughes took place. At the end of the six
months not all of the repairs were carried out and the tenants were sued for breach of contract. ...that if

Rhetorical Themes Used In Frankenstein By Mary Shelly
In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, there are many rhetorical strategies and Appeals are present
in the novel. Throughout the novel, there are many characters but the main important characters are
victor Frankenstein, the creature. Victor Frankenstein is a scientist who knows everything about
scientific field, who wants to prove that he is a great scientist. Then, tries to create life but instead
created a monster. Later on the monster started killing people. The monster killed victor brother
because the monster wanted someone to love him. Then, he killed victor s wife, and left him alone
with misery. Once, victor died the monster end up being alone again. Mary Shelly uses imagery,
metaphor, and personification to prove that loneliness could lead to tragedy in life but in the novel it
also proves that satisfaction is not found by revenge, and beauty and appearance allows more
acceptance in the society. Mary Shelly proves that loneliness only leads to despair because it makes
people to make terrible mistake in life that they could never resolve. In the novel, two characters feel
lonely. They are the monster and Robert Walton. Mery Shelly utilizes precise words, phrase, and
tones, and apostrophe to claim the monster misery of being lonely. The monster is alone, no
companion and he was abandoned by victor, who was his creator. The monster is filling with anger
and frustration and feels to blame victor for his loneliness. As if victor is the cause of the monster

resourcefulness, but it leans more on the side of resourcefulness. He remained hidden for most of the
war using his intellect, and wealth. Once caught he used his resourcefulness to get around the camps
and be under the wings of Germans. His life was passed around like change, being dropped and lost,

Moses was born to two Levites. His mother hid him for three months as the pharaoh was killing all the
Hebrew s children. When she couldn t hid him she made a basket, put him in it, and floated it down
the river. The pharaoh s daughter found the baby and took pity on it. She nurtured the baby and took it

Exodus 3:1 4:17 God speaks to Moses through the burning bush
Moses was herding is Father in law s flock and took it past the wilderness. A bush was set alight and
was not being consumed. Moses went to look at this bush and God called out to him. Moses took of
his sandals and hid his face from God as he was scared of him. God tells Moses he must go into Egypt
and free the Israelite slaves. God proceeds to tell Moses to tell the Israelites he was sent by The Lord,
the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
Moses question the Lord on how he would prove that he was indeed sent by the Lord. God told Moses
to throw his staff on the ground, the staff turned into a snake. He then told Moses to pick up the snake
by the tail, the snake turned back into a staff. God then gave Moses two more ways to prove he really
was sent by God. One of them was to put his hand into his cloak and take it out again. Once he did this

Historiography The Natural
Historiography Historiography is a historical film theory that focuses on the assumptions, principles,
and methodologies of historical study (Giannetti, 528). Giannetti divides this theoretical study into
four different types of film history: aesthetic, technological, economic, and social. According to
American scholar, Raymond Fielding, the history of motion pictures as an art form, as a medium of
communication, and as an industry has been determined principally by technological innovations
(Giannetti, 531). With time comes much technological advancement that will allow filmmakers to
accurately portray what they want and give the audiences the intended experience. Technological
advancements have aided in the production of The Rookie and The Natural in the sense that both films
could be shown through a multitude of decadal lenses. Both films show the main characters in their
childhood and how that has shaped who they are, but it also shows them in adulthood as well. The

most certainly follows this function with the underlying network of symbolic meaning along with its
many symbols. Each of the metaphors discussed by Wood and Pincus can relate to the points
previously mentioned in the structuralism/semiology section and their analysis includes some aspects
not previously noted that would further contribute to the underlying structure, such as the universal

My Role Model In My Life
Most life changing events happen with someone whom you truly trust. It is easy to ignore people,
withdraw, and not form relationships built on love and reliance. I have truly grown closer to my role
model in my life. Matt Harp, my role model, is a man of truth, integrity, love, selflessness, and
compassion. Many different times he surprised me with how he acted, spoke and thought. I clearly
saw the Lord lead his life, and his actions revealed as much. I wanted to follow his example. He led
me through junior high, what was definitely the toughest part of my life. Looking back, I can only
imagine what would have happened in my life if I had not grown to trust this honorable man. There
are many different times where Matt taught me a life lesson, but these three are the most prominent.
He taught me how to be unique, be yourself, always be willing to share, and to never give up, even
when you are tired. As a groovy guy, my small group leader always wore what the coolest clothes. I
loved to talk to him about it. I said I love your style. Where do you buy your clothes? Many different
times, I wore similar clothes to him. I started wearing unique socks, colored jeans, and many other
things. He took more notice than I realized. One day he took me aside and said You don t have to live
exactly like someone else, you just need to be you. He insisted, saying don t just copy me because you
like the way that I dress, find your own groove. I took these small statements to heart.

The Roles And Differences Between Marketing And Public...
There are many similarities between the practice of public relations (PR) and marketing and this is the
reason why many people in the workplace from different fields around the world feel con fused and
think that both of the practices are actually the same but both marketing and public relations do have a
few differences between one another.
The first difference between PR and marketing is their objectives. Public relations focus on the
company s image, responsible to promote the company or the brand itself. In other words, PR tie to
make the company appeal to people, therefore it strives hard to develop, maintain and enhance
organization relationship with the key public and its reputation (Pinkerton, 2014). But for marketing,

Real Life Application of Transportation Problem
Submitted to:
Prof. Hitesh Arora
Submitted by:
Abhay Sawhney (201055)
Executive Summary
Transportation Problem involves distribution of a certain commodity from several origins to a number
of destinations. The aim in the whole process is to minimize the costs involved.
A necessary condition for the solving of the transportation problem is that the problem must be
balanced, i.e the demand for the product at the destinations must equal the capacity of the suppliers.
Problem
The Texago Corporation is a large, fully integrated petroleum company based in the United States.
The company produces most of its oil in its own oil fields and then imports the rest of what it needs

CHECKING THE OPERATING COSTS FOR LOS ANGELES
Using Solver amp; Excel, when we solve the Transportation problem for the supply from Oil Wells to
the refineries, we get the following Optimal Solution. The Minimum cost is $ 880 Million.
Now, we look at the minimum operating costs incurred when we ship the petroleum from the Oil
Refineries to the Distribution Centres.
Following is the solution:
The Cost incurred after shipping the petroleum to the Distribution Centres is $1570 Million. So, the
minimum cost that Texago Corporation will have to incur when they set up their refinery at Los
Angeles will be 880+1570 i.e. $2450 Million.
OPERATING COSTS FOR GALVESTON
Now, for Galveston the Shipping Costs for transporting Oil from Wells to the Refinery will be $920
Million, as solved in Excel.
Now the Minimum Shipping Costs that will be incurred when transporting Petroleum from Galveston
to the Distribution Centres turns out to be $1630 Million.
The Total Cost that has to be incurred will be $2550 Million.
CALCULATING THE SHIPPING COSTS FOR St. LOUIS
Again, the Shipping Costs will have to be calculated for transporting Oil from various Oil Wells to the
refineries. The Minimum Cost this time is $920

Examining Government Regulations Essay
Examining Government Regulations Assignment
The current government regulations I researched pertain to the clinical guidelines and the civil rights
of persons living with HIV/AIDS in Portland, Oregon. Many people living with HIV/AIDS, at some
point during their illness, find themselves in need of housing assistance and support services. Stable
housing promotes improved health, sobriety or decreased use of alcohol and illegal drugs, and, for
some, a return to paid employment and productive social activities. As the number of people living
with HIV/AIDS continues to grow in both urban and rural areas throughout the United States,
stakeholders must find new ways to address their needs to promote the health and well being of these
individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2. Confidentiality Concerns
The need to maintain client confidentiality restricts the ways that OHOP housing coordinators and
other organizations and individuals can publicize their activities and resources.
3. Limited Staff Capacity and Knowledge
HIV Care and Treatment staff may lack familiarity with aspects of partner systems, including
affordable housing, and have limited resources and time to conduct marketing and outreach to
potential partners and planning bodies. Discrimination adds to the daily struggles faced by the
growing number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States people who are predominantly
poor and disproportionately African American or Latino. Every agency s biggest problems facing their
clients involve meeting basic needs coping with poverty, hunger, illiteracy, inadequate medical care,
lack of transportation, and homelessness. In addition to those basic needs issues, people with HIV face
a series of critical civil rights problems. Individuals living with HIV/AIDS need to know their rights
and need the resources to advocate for themselves when their rights are threatened. They also need
national legal organizations like the ACLU AIDS Project to enforce their civil rights and civil

Alpaca Cola
According to the argument, the author proposes that the company shoud resume the procudtionof the
alpaca. unfortunately, usless she offers further evidence to strengthen her argument, the conclusion can
remain, at bast unwarranted. To begin with, although they will have a new fabtic supplier, it does not
necessary mean that they will have a reliable and sufficient source of wool fabric. Clearly, the author
assume that the new provider can offer proper raw material and the conpany can still produce it.
However, it is highly likely that the company s facilities are to outmoted to produce new alpaca
overcoats or the efficience is influenced severely. What s more, there is no evidence that the new
fabric supplier is better than the former one. What if their material is worse than those five years

they no longer want an alpaca overcoat. It is because of this trend that our competitor nolonger makes
an alpaca overcoat. Withour considering the true situation of the demand of customer, the author s

Senior Master Sergeant Smith wasn t born yesterday, he could smell a trap a mile away and what he

What are you doing? SSG Wo asked. Get your shit on, it s getting ready to hit the fan. Senior Master

Arc Welder Essay
Top 10 Best Arc Welders 2016 Review
Are you working on an extension to your home, building something in your garage or do you need to
carry out routine maintenance and some minor repairs on parts and appliances at home? Do you have
the right tools for the job? A reliable arc welder is one of the important tools you need. This is a
machine which converts 110 to 240 volts AC electricity to welding voltage, which normally ranges
between 40 and 79 volts AC, and sometimes into an array of DC voltages. A welder consists of a
transformer, an internal cooling fan, a voltage regulator and an amperage range selector. The type of
machine you need depends on your welding skills and it s intended to use.
Arc welding utilizes an electric current which flows between a welding rod and the welding material
to melt the metal and make the weld. The location being welded is at times protected by filler material
or a semi inert gas. Arc welding is commonly used because it is cheap. It also the first type of welding
apprentices learns. Arc welders are extensively used in a wide range of application ranging from
industrial processes to home use.

However, small shop owners and homeowners can also greatly benefit from owning it. This welder
can be useful in numerous ways, such as the maintenance and minor repair of appliances and parts,
and small metal projects. A modern arc welder is a must have machine for any serious homeowner.
Remember that you need to wear protective gear when using this machine. Looking at the blue arc of
the welder with a naked eye can result in serious eye damage. It is also important to wear protective
clothing when working with the machine because the intensity of the light and high temperatures
created by the arc can lead to severe skin damage on any exposed body

The Ford Pinto And The Rashomon Effect
1. The message that the author gives in this article is, that one event can be interpreted in many
different ways, depending on who is telling it. He gives the example of the Ford Pinto and the
Rashomon effect, in which many people retell the story of the Ford Pinto. Some of those who are
retelling the story do not stop to check if the facts are actual facts. 2. I agree with what the author is
saying because I think that one situation can be told in many different ways, all depending on who is
telling it. I think that in some cases, some choose to leave out facts, while others simply do not gather
enough facts. This results in many interpretations of the situation. An example of this is with Ariana
Grande. Recently, the media is all over

The Collegiate Football Player Caught !
Dawn breaks and the headlines read, Another College Player Caught! The collegiate football league s
top scorer has been caught accepting money for his performance in last week s game. According to
league rules, he faces serious consequences for violating the league s amateur clause. As a famous and
talented collegiate athlete, why did he feel need to break the rules and jeopardize his future playing
time by accepting the money? This careless behavior is a prime example of the issues the National
Collegiate Athletic Association encounters on a daily basis. Although most collegiate athletes are fully
provided for throughout their college experience and there are legal restrictions preventing payment,
some athletes believe they should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
in Miller). These bylaws are meant to protect the young athletes from exploitation, professionally and
commercially, in the real world. Although, nowadays, intercollegiate athletics produce enormous
profit for their schools, and the players still do not receive any of it, except through scholarships
(Schneiders 232). According to Byers, athletes also cannot be paid for any work with private sports
camps related to their sport (qtd. in Miller). To bind the athletes to these standards, a player must sign
an N.C.A.A. student athlete form before ever becoming an official student athlete. This form
guarantees to the N.C.A.A. that their athletes have had the opportunity to read and understand the new
rules that govern collegiate sports, versus the leniency of high school. Despite the strict approach, the
association does take the financial need of their players into consideration by allowing schools to
include room, board, and tuition in the money they are allowed to grant (Miller).
Nevertheless, there are always those who believe that these student athletes should receive monetary
compensation. They argue that the strenuous workload placed on young students by high stress
athletics and academics is too much to expect anyone to take on without payment. Thomas Graf, a

Dual Language Argument Paper
We learned in our text that the development of language is a complicated process that involves
phonemes, morphemes, syntactic development among several other factors (Siegler, DeLoache,
Eisenberg Saffran, 2014, p. 218). Proper and effective development of these language skills has been
shown to have a critical learning period that enables successful fluency of a language; this period
usually occurs between the ages of 5 and puberty (Siegler et al., 2014, p. 220). I believe that this
critical period is the backbone of the argument against bilingual education. Proponents of this
argument believe that the sooner a child is immersed in the new language, the better off they will be
with regards to mechanics and use of that language.
The problem with this argument, as our text points out, is that modern research does not support this
way of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This model supports the use of both the native language and the new language within the daily
teaching curriculum (Ray, 2008). The No Child Left Behind Act threatens the Dual Language method
and negatively impacts bilingual education because of the high degree of emphasis that is placed on
standardized testing. The weight of standardized testing that is felt from the state all the way down to
the classroom level has forced curriculum to focus on the passing of these tests. Because bilingual
students must take the standardized test in English, this has caused a shift in the landscape of bilingual
education. Teachers of bilingual students are abandoning the DL method in favor of a more English
only environment as a means to help students pass standardized tests (Ray, 2008). This negates the
purpose of bilingual education and decreases the benefits that these students receive while learning in
a dual language

Love in the Time of Cholera Essay
Love is a powerful emotion that can cause people to act in abnormal ways. In the novel, Love in the
Time of Cholera, the main character Florentino Ariza falls passionately in love with Fermina Daza. He
immediately spends hours composing poetic love letters to Fermina as his entire life becomes
dedicated to loving her. Fermina s father, who greatly disapproves of the relationship between the two,
decides to take his daughter to travel throughout the Caribbean. After many years of separation, when
Fermina finally sees Florentino for the first time since she had been back in Hispaniola, all of her love
immediately disappears after realizing she does not actually love Florentio. From that day on,
Florentino would live for over a century in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Devastated by the loss of Fermina, Florentino spends months sick and unable to go on with his life. As
the years go by since his rejection by Fermina, he finds himself in a web of love affairs with women
from all walks of life. Although he goes against his rule that he must remain a virgin until he can
finally be with Fermina, he never marries or has children. The scars of losing his first and only love
makes it impossible for Florentino to ever settle down, get married, have a family, or even a stable job.
In comparison, David Lambert, the main character of the novel A Scientific Romance , also fails to
progress in life after the loss of his true love. David s life seems to deteriorate when he loses his lover
Anita. He later spends years searching for her around the globe. It becomes clear that David has never
moved on from loving Anita as he says, ... sail back to Anita, to my parents; restore truncated lives,
rebuild my own. (Wright 62). His only hope to ever return to being happy will only happen if he can
go to the past and be with Anita and his family. David, much like Florentino, spends his life consumed
with thoughts of Anita. He never marries or has children and lives life lonely and miserable. The loss
of both Florentino and David s only true loves prevent them from developing as individuals.
Secondly, the authors of these novels use the motif of misery caused by lost love. After Florentino is
rejected by Fermina and then later finds out she is soon

  • 2. Language Acquisition Running head: LANGUAGE AQUISITION Language Acquisition Kim Jarvis Grand Canyon University ESL 523 December 22, 2010 Abstract Learning a new language can be difficult for anyone. It is especially difficult for students who are expected to learn a new culture and different subjects at the same time. The article this paper references discusses ways teachers can help their students learn a new language and the stages those students experience as they become proficient in their new language. Introduction This paper summarizes the article, Changing Lives: Teaching English and literature to ESL students, in which Gisela Ernst Slavit, Monica Moore, and Carol Maloney discuss how teachers can help secondary school students, whose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Students who are more introverted may observe and listen to others until they are more confident of what to say. Teachers need to understand that the outgoing student may not be as fluent as he or she seems to be and that the more introverted student may be more proficient in their second language than they appear to be. Although it will take time, both types of students will learn to speak their second language proficiently. While these students are learning, they will make mistakes. The article states that if teachers correct the mistakes directly, it may discourage students from trying out their new language skills. Modeling the correct language is a much better way of correcting mistakes then using direct correction. One of the best ways to help students learn a second language is to use a variety of settings that promote talk and interaction. These not only help students understand new concepts, but they also help to provide a foundation for learning through reading and writing. Since literacy is part of language, reading and writing develop alongside speaking and listening. Students who spend time talking and listening to each other and working on reading and writing activities are able to develop more proficiency in all language modes. There is are predictable stages of linguistic and cultural processes that students who are learning a second language go through. The teacher needs to be able to identify the stage the student is in so that they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Improper Antibiotic Use Antibiotics ( Antibiotics ) (... Alaina Thomas English Comp. 2 Professor Sheets 3/2/2016 Improper Antibiotic Use Antibiotics have been the answer to many bacterial infections for the past 70 years (Antibiotic/ Antimicrobial Resistance). Antibiotics are medicines used to treat infections or diseases caused by bacteria ( What are Antibiotics? ). Antibiotics were prescribed to cure many diseases. Doctors prescribed many antibiotics during World War II. World War II was the start of the antibiotic era. Just when antibiotics were being greatly produced, bacteria started to evolve and became resistant to these medicines. What is antibiotic resistance? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Antibiotic resistance occurs when an antibiotic has lost its ability to effectively control or kill bacterial growth ( General Background ). Improper use of antibiotics causes antibiotic resistance and has many effects associated with it. People may be drug abusers and this can cause resistance in the body. Some people will only take antibiotics because they believe it is the only way they will get better. When a person uses drugs to get rid of a sickness they may start to overcompensate, but when they do, the drug may have less of an effect because the body has become so used to the drugs medicine. That is because the bacteria has found a way to avoid the effects of the antibiotic. The appropriate use of antibiotics, often called antibiotic stewardship, can help preserve the effectiveness ... • 5. Summary Of Appiah s Death Of The Duel In the first half of Death of the Duel, Appiah begins by providing the details of a duel between two prominent British government officials, using the specific example as a jumping point to discuss the general idea of dueling. The form of honor being represented in this case is that of reputation and the maintenance of regard from the general public. This concept of honor as a form of social standing is interesting because it subverts Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs and many other psychological theories that try to map out human instinct which places safety and security in higher regard than it does esteem or ego. In the case of the duel, honor is considered the highest human need, even above life itself if one considers the death toll, although that mainly applies to the aristocratic class, who had most of their basic needs taken care of already. In the case of dueling, the society at the time seemed to conflate the ideas of respect and honor, assuming that the characteristic of honorability automatically entitled one to respect from peers and lower classes. Appiah, however, distinguishes the two by noting that honor is the individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Appiah believes there is only pride in doing things out of the ordinary, I believe that it also takes courage and honor to follow honor codes in everyday circumstances. Being honorable is difficult sin a world where honorable behavior, contrary to Appiah s belief, is not actually standard behavior. For example, a student witnesses two bullies harassing another student and steps in to stop them. While this might be fairly standard honorable behavior, that does not mean the student shouldn t feel proud of their actions and the courage they took. The pride doesn t detract from the previously honorable actions. In his argument, Appiah seems to conflate the idea of pride personal satisfaction with vanity and the need to boost reputation, which I hold to be two separate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Raymond Bamhart Definition Of Ethics Essay What is Ethics Ethical behavior, an action a human may find challenging to balance in one s life. One is encompassed with daily decisions to choose right from wrong. For example, being late for work, one may decide to speed to get to work on time, knowing if you re late for work again you could lose your job. So one may decide to get to work on time, regardless of the consequences of possibly getting a ticket, causing an accident and putting the lives of others in danger which could be one s worst nightmare. How does one define ethics? Raymond Baumhart, a sociologist gave insight on what Ethics means in his viewpoint. He had mentioned that when feelings are put into the equation, it can have drawbacks of doing what is morally correct. Also, putting Religion in an Ethical review can undermine the one s that do not believe or have different beliefs. Religion will give some people inner peace, and it may give the foundation to think morally, but religion and ethics are not equivalent. Furthermore, laws are put into place to maintain some structure of what is acceptable in the eyes of the law, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, a doctor might think he has a medical moral obligation whereas the family may override the Doctor s moral dilemma and deal with the consequences. Some people may feel intimidated by one s status, but if one is taught strong values at the beginning of life, deciding the right thing to do, may just be second nature to ... • 8. Response On The Sisters Brothers The Sisters Brothers Novel Response Throughout the novel, The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt, the two brothers, Eli and Charlie, are shown as complete opposites in their personalities. This results in one being likable and the other detestable. Eli is a more likable character than Charlie since the reader has more access to Eli s emotions as the story is written through Eli s eyes. The writer uses the first person point of view writing style to allow the reader to gain an insight into Eli s thoughts. It also allows the reader to follow him through other experiences he goes on without his brother. This writing style allows you to feel as if you are in Eli s head. During their journey to California, Eli meets a woman who he fancies. They enter her room and she beg[ins] looking at the door as if wishing to leave. Come sit beside me, I said. • 9. The Key That Unites Us All Anna Bradstreet, Jonathan Edwards, and many writers had faith in religion, but others like Benjamin Franklin had faith in science. I believe that in order to find inner peace, people must learn to accept things for what they actually are. People do not need to have faith in religion to find their inner peace. Before reading this letter, I have not given much thought into the thing that unites all humans intellectually. This letter made me recognize that the key that unites us all is acceptance. Acceptance can be accomplished through factors other than religion. I established this thought while reading Bradstreet s letter to her children. It made me realize that religion is not what kept people going through their tough times, but it was their faith that played an enormous role in people s peace of mind. Furthermore, many writers in her time hoped to benefit future generations by sharing their experiences. Bradstreet s aim was to communicate to her children the power and the glory of God (Bradstreet 235). Within her poem, she emphasized on how she would occasionally abandon her prayers and forget God, only to have found that she forgot and lost herself as well and found herself troubled (Bradstreet 236). She improved herself by being obedient to God and tried to avoid all sins. I was able to link her beliefs and attempts at self improvement with Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin. Cocuzza Case Study Before PTSD became an official diagnosis, various other traumatic stress syndromes such as dissociative flashbacks and survivor guilt were used as criminal defenses for both violent/nonviolent crimes as well as a basis for successful insanity defenses. Initially PTSD raised concerns about its potential misuse in criminal courts, however, there were certain incidences where PTSD was found to be a legitimate phenomenon. Case in point, New Jersey v Cocuzza (1981). In this case, the defendant was a Vietnam veteran who was found not guilty for reason of insanity when he assaulted a police officer. Mr. Cocuzza s defense was that at the time of the incident, he believed that he was attacking enemy soldiers. His claims were supported by the officer when he testified that Mr. Cocuzza was holding a stick as if it were a rifle. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in other cases, I have mixed emotions such as the case of Babbit v Calderon. My reasons derive from the way the evidence was presented in this case. On a December night, Babbit broke into Leah Schendel s apartment and brutally beat and sexually assaulted her. Her cause of death was determined to be heart failure caused by the stress related to the incident. The following night, Babbit robbed and attempted to rape another woman, Mavis Wilson. United States Involvement In The Vietnam War In the beginning, the United States always pushed forth the idea they were becoming involved in the war in Vietnam in order to send out aid to France, who was an ally of theirs. After the United Nations began setting up a plan to help France, the United States suggested splitting up the Communist and Democratic portions of Vietnam, with the communists having control over the North, while the Kennedy administration continued to send military aid to the Southern portions of Vietnam. In the end, the United States main objective in becoming involved in the Vietnam War was to prevent the spread of communism in the region. • 14. The Doctrine Of Promissory Estoppel Another aspect we must consider is the part payment of debt in order to understand how the doctrine of promissory estoppel can be used to aid a debtor. The general rule regarding part payment of debt, at common law, is that it is not good consideration to pay a lesser sum. If the debtor does not pay the creditor all that he owns, the debtor has an obligation to pay the full amount. The general rule was established in the Pinnel s case where paying a lesser sum does not form a binding contract as there was no fresh consideration. However, within the part payment rule, there are some exceptions. The main exception which we will be focusing on is the equity exception involving the doctrine of promissory estoppel, where the promise to pay a lesser sum is binding even if there is no consideration. As mentioned above the principle of promissory estoppel was introduced first in the Hughes v Metropolitan Railway. In this case Hughes had rented a property, which he owns, to the Metropolitan Railway Company. The tenants therefore had a six month notice to fix any repairs. However during this notice period negotiations about buying the building from Hughes took place. Giannetti divides this theoretical study into four different types of film history: aesthetic, technological, economic, and social. According to American scholar, Raymond Fielding, the history of motion pictures as an art form, as a medium of communication, and as an industry has been determined principally by technological innovations (Giannetti, 531). With time comes much technological advancement that will allow filmmakers to accurately portray what they want and give the audiences the intended experience. Technological advancements have aided in the production of The Rookie and The Natural in the sense that both films could be shown through a multitude of decadal lenses. • 25. Examining Government Regulations Essay Examining Government Regulations Assignment The current government regulations I researched pertain to the clinical guidelines and the civil rights of persons living with HIV/AIDS in Portland, Oregon. Many people living with HIV/AIDS, at some point during their illness, find themselves in need of housing assistance and support services. Stable housing promotes improved health, sobriety or decreased use of alcohol and illegal drugs, and, for some, a return to paid employment and productive social activities. As the number of people living with HIV/AIDS continues to grow in both urban and rural areas throughout the United States, stakeholders must find new ways to address their needs to promote the health and well being of these individuals ... Confidentiality Concerns The need to maintain client confidentiality restricts the ways that OHOP housing coordinators and other organizations and individuals can publicize their activities and resources. 3. Limited Staff Capacity and Knowledge HIV Care and Treatment staff may lack familiarity with aspects of partner systems, including affordable housing, and have limited resources and time to conduct marketing and outreach to potential partners and planning bodies. Discrimination adds to the daily struggles faced by the growing number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States people who are predominantly poor and disproportionately African American or Latino. Every agency s biggest problems facing their clients involve meeting basic needs coping with poverty, hunger, illiteracy, inadequate medical care, lack of transportation, and homelessness. In addition to those basic needs issues, people with HIV face a series of critical civil rights problems. Individuals living with HIV/AIDS need to know their rights and need the resources to advocate for themselves when their rights are threatened. They also need national legal organizations like the ACLU AIDS Project to enforce their civil rights and civil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. The Ford Pinto And The Rashomon Effect 1. The message that the author gives in this article is, that one event can be interpreted in many different ways, depending on who is telling it. He gives the example of the Ford Pinto and the Rashomon effect, in which many people retell the story of the Ford Pinto. Some of those who are retelling the story do not stop to check if the facts are actual facts. 2. I agree with what the author is saying because I think that one situation can be told in many different ways, all depending on who is telling it. I think that in some cases, some choose to leave out facts, while others simply do not gather enough facts. This results in many interpretations of the situation. As a famous and talented collegiate athlete, why did he feel need to break the rules and jeopardize his future playing time by accepting the money? According to Byers, athletes also cannot be paid for any work with private sports camps related to their sport (qtd. in Miller). To bind the athletes to these standards, a player must sign an N.C.A.A. student athlete form before ever becoming an official student athlete. This form guarantees to the N.C.A.A. that their athletes have had the opportunity to read and understand the new rules that govern collegiate sports, versus the leniency of high school. • 31. Dual Language Argument Paper We learned in our text that the development of language is a complicated process that involves phonemes, morphemes, syntactic development among several other factors (Siegler, DeLoache, Eisenberg Saffran, 2014, p. 218). Proper and effective development of these language skills has been shown to have a critical learning period that enables successful fluency of a language; this period usually occurs between the ages of 5 and puberty (Siegler et al., 2014, p. 220). I believe that this critical period is the backbone of the argument against bilingual education. Proponents of this argument believe that the sooner a child is immersed in the new language, the better off they will be with regards to mechanics and use of that language. The problem with this argument, as our text points out, is that modern research does not support this way of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This model supports the use of both the native language and the new language within the daily teaching curriculum (Ray, 2008). The No Child Left Behind Act threatens the Dual Language method and negatively impacts bilingual education because of the high degree of emphasis that is placed on standardized testing. The weight of standardized testing that is felt from the state all the way down to the classroom level has forced curriculum to focus on the passing of these tests. Because bilingual students must take the standardized test in English, this has caused a shift in the landscape of bilingual education. Teachers of bilingual students are abandoning the DL method in favor of a more English only environment as a means to help students pass standardized tests (Ray, 2008). This negates the purpose of bilingual education and decreases the benefits that these students receive while learning in a dual language ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although he goes against his rule that he must remain a virgin until he can finally be with Fermina, he never marries or has children. The scars of losing his first and only love makes it impossible for Florentino to ever settle down, get married, have a family, or even a stable job. In comparison, David Lambert, the main character of the novel A Scientific Romance , also fails to progress in life after the loss of his true love.
