INTRODUCTION
A scholarly work that has received widespread attention and recognition in the Strategic Management
area and beyond is Porter s (1980, 1985) typology of generic competitive strategies: Cost leadership,
differentiation, and focus. These three actually fall into two basic categories. The focus strategy calls
for concentration on a niche or a narrow segment. But Porter says that success in this strategy can be
achieved either via cost leadership or differentiation. Thus, cost leadership and differentiation are the
two basic strategies in Porter s typology. These two then are the subject of discussion in this paper.
This contribution of Porter (1980, 1985) has had a deep and pervasive influence on business theory
and practice. Since then many strategists from diverse fields have examined or made reference to his
work. Most of this voluminous literature appeared during the eighties and the nineties. The purpose of
this paper is to offer a critique of Porter s work, and a synthesis of this literature. Thompson and
Strickland (2008, chap. 5) have expanded Porter s generic strategies from three to five: overall low
cost provider strategy, broad differentiation strategy, best cost provider

Action In Judaism
Many people inherit their religion from their parents and usually die in it; however, there are some
questions that need to be asked before choosing a religion. The most important choice should be
between believe or action. Action should have more emphasis than belief in a religion. Therefore,
Judaism is the perfect religion to accommodate right action due to its orthopraxy nature, due diligence
to society, not forcing others to convert, and knowing what each individual is destined to accomplish
while incorporating belief; in which it is hard to find the right combination of action and belief in
other religions.
One of the interesting aspect of Judaism is that Jews are more concerned with the book of Torah (Jews
Bible). Being a Jew is intertwined in doing the right thing and ... Show more content on

Jews carry out their due diligence with in their society and at home. A woman is treated as the queen
of her house. Kids grow up in the appropriate love and nurture from their mothers. Everyone in the
Jew family has roles. The wife takes care of her family. Husband most of the time is the bread winner
and helps the community. Even kids take their religion after their mother. Wives after divorce must
receive a get to finalize a divorce. Manning describes the rule of divorce as it prohibited a husband
from divorcing his wife from without her consent. (103) Judaism acknowledges and dictates
relationship between friends. Eastman explains friendship by referring the last Ten commandments in
which it [P]rohibits against coveting , the blessing of a neighbor . Therefore, it is tempting to convert
to Judaism because Jews display a great respect, love and tolerance among each other. In addition,
wives are treated with a great respect and have values. Hence, it can be observed that there is a strong
support for the society in good and bad times; Therefore, it makes Judaism attractive and difficult life

Paragraph On Afternoon Tea
Afternoon Tea The enjoyment of drinking tea like the British Patrician
British are illustrious as a fan of tea. England is the country outside of Asia, which is known as the
world s largest tea consumer. Since it was first introduced in the 17th century, the popularity of tea in
Britain is so shot. This popularity led to the motto of tea time which eventually became an essential
activity in the lives of the British. British predilection to drink tea evolved a tradition of drinking tea in
the afternoon which is known as the Afternoon Tea . The characteristic of this tea related ritual is the
tea served with snacks that arranged in the three tier tray.
The Origins of Teatime Tradition in England
Tea was first introduce in Britain in 1662, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In those days, people usually only have heavy meals twice a day, ie breakfast and dinner. Since the
dinner is served around eight, the time between breakfast and dinner were quite long, and it made her
craving for food in the afternoon. To deal with her hunger, she ate little cakes as a light meals while
drinking tea in his private room to await the dinner hour. Gradually, Anna obtained an idea to invite
her female royal friends for tea parties together. Quickly, the event was imitated by other patrician
ladies, make these habits become popular and become one of the British s Tradition. Due to this
activity usually held around three to five in the afternoon, it called as afternoon tea .
In contrast to the tradition of drinking tea in Asian countries, Afternoon Tea more as a moment to meet
and socialize. In addition to being the interval to fill the stomach between lunch and dinner time,
afternoon tea is more focused on the lifestyle, rather than the tea itself. Thus, afternoon tea is similar
with fine dining that filled with rules and table manner. Due to afternoon tea is more focused on
lifestyle matters, everything appears so beautiful, ranging from tea utensils such as cups until the

Case Study Of United Airlines And Continental Airlines
United Airlines and Continental Airlines, two major airlines companies, agreed to a merger that would
create the world s largest airline. Such important deal has a lot of problems to be dealt with, from
technical, for example how to put the companies databases together, to more fundamental, like how
the company should be ruled. The three major challenges that arose after the merger were the
following: firstly, the companies needed to integrate their flight information systems. Secondly, they
needed to integrate their passenger information systems. Finally, there was a need to reconcile both
airlines speedup slowdown algorithms. The integration of flight information system was needed so

He invented Generic Competitive Strategies that are vital to compete in any industry. His strategies
are: cost leadership strategy, differentiation and focus, which is divided into cost focus and
differentiation focus. If one company is to follow the cost leadership strategy, it should try to increase
its profits by reducing costs and charging average prices. The differentiation strategy is an opposite
way the company that follows this strategy often has higher prices for its services, but it is different
and more attractive than its competitors. Focus strategy means that the company that follows it
concentrates on some niche market. The division of focus strategy means that one companies can try
to be successful in cost leadership, while focusing on a niche market and other companies will follow
differentiation strategy. Michael Porter also invented competitive forces model. This model allows us
to understand why, for example, the airlines industry is the least profitable one. It has an easy market
entry, so there are a lot of different companies, and customer has to choose one, but it is difficult for
him to differentiate between different companies, so the customers just chooses what is the most
convenient for him at the current moment of time. There is an intense competition because of

Effects Of The Financial Crisis Of Deutsche Bank s...
7. Effects of the financial crisis Deutsche bank s involvement with collateralized debt obligations and
residential mortgage backed securities contributed greatly to the housing bubble that burst in 2008
thus helping launch the great recession. Even though the residential mortgage backed securities were

because of globalization, and the interrelations of the world s economy. The recession created here by
the housing bubble bursting helped to create a global recession. 8. Regulation Most financial
institutions do not hold themselves accountable. However, they do fall under the regulation of
governing bodies. In the United States we have the US securities and exchange commission (SEC)
that regulates trading of commodities and securities that are exchanged on an open market. In April
2010 the SEC proposed revisions to the application of asset backed securities (CDO and RMBS). A
few of the most important implementations are that the issuer is required to file on the SEC website a
computer program that provides investors with a tool to analyze information about specific loans
within the pool of assets. This computer program would show the effect of the so called waterfall so
investors can analyze how the borrowers loan payments are distributed to investors in the ABS, how
losses or lack of payment on those loans will be divided among the investors, and when administrative

Understanding Our Age By Jacques Ellul Summary
Within society today, many companies utilize technique which is a mode of problem solving that is
used to find the one best method through efficiency and rationality. In his article Understanding Our
Age, Jacques Ellul states that we are bound to see that in a society which has become extremely
technical, the determining factor is both scientific research and the application of science in the form
of technique (Ellul 27). Society s obsession with efficiency and rationality has succumbed workers to
solutions that do not focus on their needs but rather on the fastest method possible to get the task
accomplished. When a systemic problem arises, society s first response is to fix that problem with a
technical solution which only fuels the unending cycle of technical solutions generating additional
technical problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With an increasing need to push the industry forwards and create an ever expanding amount of
technical objects, it can be observed that technique is exceedingly present in most companies methods.
Ellul believed that with this reliance on technique, we have also come to rely on machine and
consequently our muscular activity is replaced by the machine [which] encompasses all our activities
(Ellul 58). We see results of technique in our daily lives without even realizing it and it can be
problematic that society willing allows for technique to take over many facets of how we perform in
aspects of our work. Ellul continues, stating that work has changed character, [it] makes people work
to their maximum... [and this has become] an essential value of a world dominated by technique (Ellul
60). Additionally, in a technique governed society, Ellul believed that people found that their
happiness was conflicted with wanting to use technology but not wanting to live in a purely technical
milieu (Ellul

The Tax Rate Of The United States
1. Imagine a friend says that he doesn t want to take a job that pays slightly more money only because
he will be bumped into the next tax bracket and end up taking home less income after taxes. Based on
the video Engager you watched in Unit 2, how would you advise this friend? Define marginal tax
rates. Then, explain why tax rates in the United States were designed to be marginal.
➢ A progressive tax, which the friend would be under in this situation, is one in which those with the
highest incomes pay the higher tax rate (Video Engager 2). I would advise this friend to take a closer
look at the situation; just because he is earning more money does not necessarily mean he will lose
more of what he earns to taxes. Instead, different safety features are built into the process to ensure
that those who earn more are not prevented from working harder or getting a promotion. For example,
those with a higher income can be incentivized through tax breaks from giving to charity or even
saving for retirement (Video Engager 2). These benefits encourage those in the higher income brackets
to continue to be motivated to earn more. In addition, the tax rates on higher income are marginalized.
Marginal tax rates mean that a high earner will only pay the higher tax on the portion of money that is
above the tax bracket. In other words, everyone will pay the same percentage of tax on the first
bracket of income, any income above that bracket will be taxed at a slightly higher rate, and

Creon as the Hero of Sophocles Antigone Essay
Creon as the Hero of Antigone
The dilemma of identifying the true hero, or heroine, of Sophocles Antigone has tortured students for
years. It is indeed a difficult decision to make. The basis for this decision is what the reader perceives
to be Sophocles dramatic issue in this play. The dramatic issue of the play is twofold: Antigone is a
fanatic who is driven by her religious fever to bury the body of her criminal brother, Polyneices,
against the edict of Creon. In the second part, Sophocles shows how the new King Creon s refusal to
change his decision in the face of adversity is admirable, but at the same time his political morals end
up destroying his family. His fall from grace is tragic, whereas Antigone s fall is ... Show more content

It will be good to die, so doing (burying Polyneices). I shall lie by his side, loving him as he has loved
me; I shall be a criminal but a religious one (Soph. Ant. 82 85), she confides to Ismene, her sister. This
is her attitude throughout the play: bravado in the face of the death sentence she brought upon herself,
unreasonably enthusiastic about the prospect of her own death. Even at the ultimate moment, she has
no fear of what death will bring. When I come to that other world my hope is strong that my coming
will be a welcome to my father, and dear to you, my mother, and dear to you, my brother deeply loved
(Soph. Ant. 951 955). According to Jebb, she is possessed by a burning indignation (Jebb 1902 p.12)
and it is this passion which clouds her vision. Antigone s defense that she is acting in the name of the
gods has no basis in the reality of the play because there is no evidence of the gods taking part in the
underlying actions of the play.
Antigone s zealous behavior is the antithesis of Creon s logical arguments. When Antigone is arrested
and brought before Creon, her statements allude to a conspiracy set up against her:
Antigone: I know that I will die of course I do even if you had not doomed me by proclamation. (Here
she believes that Creon

How Does Shakespeare Present Malvolio In Twelfth Night
Shakespeare presents Malvolio (meaning ill will ) in a way that makes the characters dislike him and
feel entitled to subject him to horrific and embarrassing tricks. Perhaps it is a form of release for the
characters and audience members; Angela Carter states, Comedy is tragedy that happens to other
people. In a way this is true since it is Shakespeare s design to create comedy in Malvolio s
misfortune. This type of treatment in the real world would not be funny as it is taken too far; at first
they only make fun of him but then they start to humiliate and torture him even in context of Twelfth
Night being a comedy. The audience is aware of the tragedy that Malvolio goes through but whether
they choose to go on a moral recess or not is up to them. Some ... Show more content on

This is comical to the audience and Malvolio is not of high class and the Tudor sumptuary laws state
that only upper classes are allowed to wear them. It is hilarious because of how he references the letter
and so blatantly shows off, he completely goes against his character and Puritanism. Olivia s reaction
highlights how odd she finds it and orders, Good Maria, let this fellow be looked to. The use of the
word fellow shows that she pities him as she genuinely thinks he is ill, this is because instead of
calling him what he is, a steward, she merely references his gender to show that she is considering him
as a human. However, Shakespeare makes the situation so that Malvolio does not fully recognise that
he has been tricked and therefore what he cannot understand cannot affect him. He is not aware that
everything is just a joke played at his expense, and therefore feeling sorry for someone who is not
aware that they are meant to be pitied for seems pointless. It may provoke sympathy as the audience
no longer see him as just a Puritan nuisance but as a fellow

Should Viruses Be Considered A Living Thing Essay
There are many living things in our world. Some people simply know them as being able to move like
humans and animals . However, there are many restrictions for it to be considered a living thing. Virus
is a big part of our lives, and there is a controversy whether it is a living thing or not. I believe that a
virus should not be considered living thing because they lack many of the properties that scientists
associate with living organisms. A big reason of why viruses should not be considered a living thing is
because they are not able to reproduce sexually or asexually. Instead the only way they can reproduce
is to attack cells by injecting DNA in the cell. Then the cell makes more viruses and splits open,
releasing the viruses and letting them spread. That means that viruses can only reproduce when there
is a living organism. Without them, they will never exist. All living things are able to reproduce
sexually or asexually, which means that no matter what, they can reproduce in most situations. Viruses
on the other hand, cannot reproduce on its own, or with a mate, so it would definitely not be a living
thing. Some people argue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

why it is officially classified as a living thing, whereas viruses don t have all the properties of a living

A Steady Retreat from Democracy and a Growing Involvement in the European Union
Heywood (2002) defines the European idea as the belief that Europe constitutes a single political
community with shared objectives and difficulties despite its historical, linguistic and cultural
differences. In the 20th century the European community essentially concerned itself with defence,
peace keeping, and economic progress partly in response to the devastation caused by the Second
World War. However, the European Union is increasingly focusing on more domestic issues such as
civil rights within the EU, environmental issues and social policy. This expansion of the EU was

What is termed second order voting (Bromley, 2001) implies that a weakness in the linkage between
elections and representation, which reduces the level of accountability, thus creating what many would
view as a significant democratic deficit which is unnecessary.
This linkage can be improved which would strengthen the legitimacy of the European Parliament.
However, even the most representative and legitimate European Parliament could be ineffective in
ensuring levels of democracy if its abilities and powers within the framework of the European Union
are weak in comparison to other EU institutions. The electorate does not directly elect the Council of
Ministers and European Council. Although the European Council is formed of heads of state which

Who Was The Vatican Dbq Essay
On a sunny day in The Vatican, one of the most beloved popes died. Twelve cardinals were to vote for
the next pope, however four of them went missing out of nowhere one morning, so some officials
went to the most qualified people they could ever go to.
Traveling over 5,000 miles they came to a little quiet school in Peachtree Corners with not much
happening until the phone rang in Doc s room asking for Mr.West, Mr.Nail, and Ms.Sanders
immediately. They went to the front where three officials were standing and rushed them out to PDK
Airport to fly back to Rome. While there, Mr. West asked why they were chosen instead of hundreds
of other professors and more qualified teachers. One of the officials said that kids are more clever and
like puzzles. So on they went, knowing that this mission could be fatal but they were up to the
challenge.
Once they arrived, they got to work to find out who these Cardinals were. However, the Vatican
granted access to only a few documents in the Secret Archives and only a few had the names of the
Cardinals. But with a Vatican official, they could gain more access to more documents including
secrets that The Vatican would allow outsiders to see. Since they knew it would be only a matter of

Theme Of Freedom In The Story Of An Hour
After reading The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin the reader can see that the text reveals a major
theme about freedom with the use of a few characters, a basic setting, and plot. This text was written
to address the crisis of the restricted lives women were forced to live during that time period. In the
beginning of the story, the narrator is discussing how they were being careful to break the news of
Louis husband s death because she had a heart problem. In the middle of the text, we learn how the
news was accepted. Finally, in the end of the text, the author adds an interesting plot twists that brings
the meaning of the story together. Kate Chopin s The Story of an Hour, is the best story because it
developed the theme of the loss of freedom can be detrimental through her use of plot, setting, and
character.
The Story of an Hour is a very short text, so the author does not have room to develop a complex plot.
In the exposition, the reader learn that Mrs. Mallard has a heart problem, so the other characters
wanted to be delicate while sharing the news of her husband s death. The rising action is when Mrs.
Mallard s sister shares the news and Mrs. Mallard responds by weeping and going to her room. The
climax occurs when Mrs. Mallard learns that she will be free from the restrictions the civil law forces
on women at that time. According to the text, When she abandoned herself a little whisper escaped her

Differences Between Middle And Upper Class
The Many Differences between Lower, Middle and Upper Class There are various ways of referring to
class. Often, when people talk about lower/middle and upper class, they talk in terms of blue/white
collar jobs. Ideally we would all think we fall into the middle class; however, most of society is in the
lower/middle class even though they are working their dream job with a degree. Additionally, the
American dream has changed drastically throughout the years. The unfair, the system that effects the
rich poor balance has been getting big traction. Middle class is paying higher taxes than upper class;
the tax systems are upside, and down poor people are paying more and the rich people are paying less.
I believe that wealthy people are paying too little taxes. When you are in the middle class you are
stuck paying more than someone that is the upper class. According to David Leonhardt in Inequality
has been going on forever... he mentioned, Instead their middle class and poor have enjoyed more
aggressively rising incomes, all while their economies grow as rapidly as this country s in recent
years. (Leonardt 543) For instance, working in the middle class we don t get enough money to pay off
every single thing, so we have to try to balance all the bills and necessities out. I see many people are
struggling they cannot pay all of their bills.
Lower/Middle class cannot afford to pay more taxes because they do not make enough with the taxes

Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have

Traditional Method Of Genomic Selection
Genomic selection Traditional method of genetic improvement of livestock using information on
phenotypes and pedigrees to predict breeding values has been very successful, however, breeding
values could be predict more accurately by using information on variation in DNA sequence between
animals. Research on marker assisted selection (MAS) is very extensive but has limited
implementation and increases in genetic gain is small (Dekkers, 2004). Goddard and Hayes (2002)
showed that the factors governing the additional gains from MAS are the accuracy of the existing
estimated breeding values (EBV). If at all, the accuracy is high, there will be little gain. However,

Using simulation, they showed that the breeding value could be predicted with an accuracy of 0.85
from marker data alone. The major limitation to the implementation of genomic selection has been the
large number of markers required and the cost of genotyping these markers (Grapes et al. 2004).
Recently both these limitations have been overcome in most livestock species following the
sequencing of the livestock genomes, the subsequent availability of hundreds of thousands of single
nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). As a result of these developments there are many livestock breeding
companies planning to implement genomic selection in the near future (Grapes et al. 2004). Statistical
analysis to calculate EBV from genome wide DNA markers it is convenient to think of the process in
three steps:
i. Use the markers to deduce the genotype of each animal at each QTL. ii. Estimate the effects of each
QTL genotype on the trait. iii. Sum all the QTL effects for selection candidates to obtain their genomic
EBV (GEBV).
As the markers are unlikely to be evenly spaced, and due to the variable nature of the LD, we could
still not expect that all QTL would have an SNP in complete LD with them. This suggests that we
need denser markers than are currently available. The technology to achieve this is available (Parks et
al. 2007). An additional problem arises if we wish to estimate the effect of each marker across more

Ige Antibodies Live On The Surface Of Cells
IgE antibodies live on the surface of cells that are specifically designed to be involved in the
inflammatory response, mast cells and basophils. Mast cells are found predominantly in your surface
tissues (tissues close to the external environment) such as in your skin and in the mucous membranes

cells that lead to degranulation, which is the process that releases molecules from vesicles that
regulate immune responses. Amongst these molecules is histamine.
According to Nordqvist (2015), histamine causes effects on the body by binding to histamine
receptors. There are four types of histamine receptors, H1 H4, but the main receptor ... Show more

Another symptom caused by histamines, shortness of breath and asthmatic like wheezing, when
smooth muscles contract in the airways.
Antihistamines alleviate the effects of histamine on the body, hence their name antihistamine. Taking
an antihistamine drug such as Claritin, Allegra, or Zyrtec prevents these effects. The drug races to the
H1 receptor and competes with the histamine. The histamine cannot bind wherever the drug binds,
therefore the histamine can t cause any irritating effects. It s always better to take an antihistamine
drug before you come into contact with an allergen. That way the antihistamine will have a higher
chance of binding to to the receptor than the histamine does. Antihistamines usually don t have side
effects but drowsiness is one side effect that is hard to avoid. When an antihistamine crosses the BBB,
or blood brain barrier, that exists between the circulatory system and the nervous system to stop
random molecules from getting into the brain and causing untold havoc (U.S. National Library of
Medicine, 2002) drowsiness occurs.
The first generation of antihistamine drugs, such as diphenhydramine, crossed the BBB almost
effortlessly and once they had crossed it sedation would set it. However newer antihistamines, known
as second generation antihistamines, have been modified to prevent them crossing the BBB as easily.
However, a new study indicates that the newer generation antihistamines tested caused daytime

Big Bang Theory Or A Big Fabrication
Adair Day
AP English IV
Mrs. Britt Collins
14 March 2016
Big Bang Theory or a Big Fabrication The concept of creation has boggled human s minds for
centuries. Human nature has an intuitive sense of longing for an answer to solve the unknown, and
creation embodies the concept of unknown. In an effort to compile reason and scientific knowledge,
an explanation of the formation of the universe was formed and is widely known as The Big Bang
Theory. The Big Bang Theory is considered, ...the leading scientific explanation for the formation of
the universe (Howell). The Big Bang Theory articulates that before this event there was nothing; and
after it there was something. This suggestion to how the universe was created was originally born
from the sighting that the surrounding galaxies are moving away from our own at an immense speed
as if they had been propelled by some force (Howell). The standard theory states that the entire
universe originated as a condensed, infinitely pressured, singularity, which defies the laws of today s
understanding of physics. It is a misconception this event occurred as an explosion; rather it resembled
more of an expansion. At one moment there was nothing in existence and in the following, the
universe expanded as a balloon would, from a sub atomic particle, to all that it is today. This notion of
how the universe was created, is nothing more than a shot into the dark, literally, and holds no validity.
At this exact moment there are roughly 100,000

First Opium War Research Paper
Good morning class and Mrs Bennett. The Hypothesis for this topic is that the First Opium War
caused problems in society because the criminal rate increased, as well as the local consumption of the
drug. This presentation will be discussing mainly what opium is, what the first opium war was, and
why it started. The Opium War was a battle in China that occurred during the mid 19th century. This
war was between western countries, such as Britain, and the Qing Dynasty, which ruled China
between 1644 and 1911.
The First Opium War was conducted from 1839 to 1842, and was between China and Britain. The
reasoning for the war occurring was caused by China s attempts to withhold the Opium trade. It was
over diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of foreign nationals in China. Opium was
illegally being imported into China, through India, by the British. They grew the opium on their
plantations in India. At first, the British were addicted to stimulating Chinese tea. Trade imbalance
occurred due to the Chinese buying few European products and demanding Gold or Silver in return.
The reverse flow of Silver and the increasing number of opium addicts alarmed Chinese officials, and
resulted in over 20,000 chests of opium to be confiscated. As opium was being imported into china, it
caused unrest in society, the local consumption to increase, and the decrease in the price of the drug.
Being a stimulant drug, Opium spread throughout the country, badly affecting its nation. ... Show

An illicit underground mail service, ran by highly trained assassins that originated in sixteenth century
Europe and is still thriving in twentieth century America, obviously the story created by an insane
person, yet Oedipa Mass, of Thomas Pynchon s The Crying of Lot 49, has made her life devoted to
unearthing this seemingly impossible gang in the 1960 s. Named co executor of the will of an
eccentric wealthy ex boyfriend, Peirce Inverarity, Oedipa is told about a rare stamp collection owned
by Inverarity that was comprised of fakes, all with similar water marks, symbols and inconsistencies
that Oedipa eventually concludes must belong to an elaborate illegal mailing service named
W.A.S.T.E. and further attempts to convince herself that this service is controlled by a murderous
group known only as Tristero. To prove the existence of such a group, Oedipa runs through a rather
elaborate internal appeal to logos to prove to herself through reason, logic, and facts that the Tristero
exists. While she does collect evidence and testimonies that suggest to the groups activates, Oedipa s
major support to the group s current state is deduced logically to remove any chance of some other
possibility existing about Tristero s doings. Though the conclusion of a deduction is meant to be
infallible, Oedipa purposefully makes errors in the establishment of many of the premises required to
make any sound conclusion. Though each deduction appears probable at first glance, deeper analysis

The And Its Effects On The Human Brain
Introduction
Over the last hundred years much was learned about the localisation of function in the human brain
than ever before. Gall and his followers through the trials of phrenology started investigating the
functions of the brain but soon that was replaced by the by solid neuroscientific evidence from
experiments in other animals (Kringebach Rolls, 2004). However, even with the the evolution of
human neuroimaging over the last 15 20 years, still some researchers use this technique in a way that
resembles a kind of modern day phrenology (Kringebach Rolls, 2004). Furthermore, it is of vital
importance to be aware of the fact that these interesting pictures of the brain can potentially mislead us
if not interpreting them based on the wealth of scientific evidence gained by diverse and various
methods from both humans and other animals(Kringebach Rolls, 2004).
According to Cavada Schzult s (2004) orbitofrontal cortex is one of the least explored and least
understood regions of the primate cerebral cortex, a part of the frontal lobe that lies on the top of the
orbit. Classic clinical evidence proposes that the orbitofrontal cortex is engaged in critical human
operations, such as social integration and the regulation of emotional states, drive and responsibility,
and generally traits that are vital in shaping the personality of an individual.
Kringebach and Rolls (2004) argues that the orbitofrontal cortex can be used in various ways as a

Working Out Research Paper
Exercise: Just why? I need to work out today. Everyone in their lifetime has probably said that more
than 100 times. But, do they need to work out? Yes. Working out or exercising is a key part in staying
healthy. I think that the 3 key parts of staying healthy are 1: Eating healthy, 2: Getting a good amount
of sleep, and of course, 3: exercising. That s why people need to work out. They want to follow these
healthy habits. Of course, most people don t succeed. But, we all try. Because, working out or
exercising is for you and your overall health. One reason exercise is good for you is that exercise helps
you stay fit. Fitness is an important part of staying healthy. You need to stay fit in order to keep your
body parts from failing. Your whole body relies on your fitness. People who don t work out often turn
out overweight or too skinny. According to WebMD, exercising helps boost your heart rate, which
helps make workouts easy. So, for people who think working out is hard that sentence proves you

means having a bad self esteem. People who have a bad self esteem seem to have social problems.
But, I think people who have a bad body image should be motivated to reach a body image that you
can accept. Now, sometimes you just can t change your body image, and that s fine. Accepting who
you are is a good thing. But, I also think when you work out and get fit that also improves your body

Rhetorical Analysis Of `` Catch `` By Chris Leggett Essay
There are many ways to write a literary essay on a text, choosing the most effective method depends
on what the writer is trying to accomplish. What is most important is understanding what one is
writing about and effectively delivering it. In the sample essay, Tossing Metaphors Together in Robert
Francis s Catch by Chris Leggett, Leggett writes an analysis paper in which he analyzes the extended
metaphor of the poem. While in the sample essay, How William Faulkner s Narrator Cultivates a Rose
for Emily by Tony Groulx, Groulx writes a research paper where he researches various aspects of the
story. These two essays demonstrate two distinct approaches taken to discuss a poem and a story.
From beginning to end, both approaches are a process that require focus and patience. At the end they
should both provide the reader with further insight into the text. To write an effective thesis driven
essay about a literary text, the writer must understand the text, organize their information clearly, and
support their papers purpose.
In Leggett s essay, he analyzes the poem Catch by Robert Francis. Poems can be challenging to
analyze, as there are many elements to consider, such as metaphors, symbolism, and tone. Leggett
chooses to focus on only four key words from the poem, then constructs his essay around each word.
He states that the entire poem s meaning can be cut down to these four words, attitudes, latitudes,
interludes, and altitudes. By focusing on only a

Gender Equity in Health and Health Care Essay
Introduction It is often challenging to have health care services that meet the needs of Canada s
diverse population and the needs of both men and women. Gender influences access to care and
women in particular are at risk for face difficulties to care (Ontario Women`s Health Equity Report,
2010 p.1). Women are more likely to be poor and have greater caregiver responsibilities in contrast to
men. These both factors are barriers to accessing health services. The way the health care system is

Failure of Addressing Women s Health Needs Supporting Family Members Providing Care Gender
based analysis is a critical component of reforming Canada s health system as it helps policymakers
understand disparities in health status, how health and illness are experienced and how men and
women access and interact with the health system (Health Canada, 2003). Today s health care system
does not take gender into account because it does not considers the kinds of care and support that
women define as important to their health and well being. In 2002, Commissioner Roy J. Romanow,

Canada s health care system. The Report stresses the importance of health equity and addressing the

recommendation the Report lists is, developing programs and services that recognize the different

My Life After A Volunteer At The Emergency Department
I was never fully able to wrap my mind around how one discovers their vocation in life. It was not
until last summer that I was able to uncover my passion. My novel discovery would take place during,
one of the most scorching months of August I ever recall experiencing. It would be during this
amplifying heat that I would conclude to go to Mercy Hospital and become a volunteer at the
Emergency Department. This day would not only come to symbolize an inflection point in my life due
to the fact that I had recently emigrated from Spain, but a realization of my calling in life.
As if it was yesterday, I remember I had to wake up punctually that day. My father, a draconian man in
his fifties, would have to drop off my mother first at her office, and afterward, come back home to
pick me up. Weak sunbeams shone through the blinds of my dusty window, taking with them a
sweltering tangibility that would congest my silent room. I suddenly got up, breathing heavy as if the
flaming spears of the sun had pierced my lungs.
Soon after I dashed to take an encouraging shower. Promptly, I put on a red polished polo with
hospital miniature logo. I added blue cargo pants, which I thought would fit better for the unknown
tasks waiting for me at the hospital. Since the first moment I exited the bed, my mind had generated
persistent feelings of inquietude. With the smell of brand new clothes still hovering in the air, I
believed myself to possess a health professional when my juvenile figure

Software Project Failure Essay
Failure of Software Project : There are many reasons for the failure of the project here are the few
reasons how there is a failure accourance for the software projects. ⦁ The first reason is no proper
planning for the project. ⦁ No sufficent time ⦁ No sufficient budget ⦁ No good communication. ⦁ No
proper testing ⦁ Not reaching to industry standards. No Sufficent time : The deadline for the project is
decided before the project starts. As the deadline is given we start assuming that the sooner we start
coding the sooner we will finish. This kind of apporach is always wrong. It is very importatnt to spend
time for creating a good design for the product with out a proper design that leads for continious
changes for the project. So when this happens there is no sufficient time because lot of time gets
wasted. No Sufficient Budget : Many of the projects have low budgets based on their own
requirments. When this happens everything slows down eventually and the quality suffers. No Good
Communication : There should always be a good communication with development team ,the users
and the customers. This one of the important thing for the success of the project. No proper Testing :
When the product to be delivered in the moment the only thing that suffers is testing. All the testing is
left pending untill the coding is done from the development team. So, this results the product with lot
of bugs and custmer feel unhappy. Not reaching to industry standards : Conforming to industry

One thing that could have high effect is decline in sales due to economic stability. Clothing is a
necessity but expensive clothing isn t so it is important that this brand make an experience and

recommendation that I have is producing high quality products. If I am having a hard time and I don t
want to continually spend money on a good pair of jeans I will splurge and by a few so that I don t
have to waist my money on buying tens of pair of pants quality over quantity. Other factors that post a
threat to Abercrombie and Fitch are other stores and competition such as H M, Macys and Nordstrom.
If this brand can offer consumers what the others can t I believe than can eliminate any competition in
their way. The fact Abercrombie and Fitch has different divisions it defiantly gives them a leg up on
the completion because their exposure is greater. The last threat is trends, it is very important as a
brand to have up to date items in their store. Teens are always looking to their favorite stores for the
latest fashions crave, it is important to them to stay in style. Making sure they are current will help

Symbolism Of Childhood In Peter Pan And Wizard Of Oz
Childhood is the kingdom where nobody dies , a quote from Edna St. Vincent Millay. Both Peter Pan
and Wizard of Oz, use childhood to promote The Golden Age . According to Marriam Webster.com,
this term is described as, a period of great happiness, prosperity, and achievement. But the golden age
is also defined as a period where authors discovered that children were more than innocent angels and
that their childhoods are important, joyous, and unique. Both authors, Barrie and Baum show this
throughout their novels. Barrie uses imagination and a fear of growing up while, Baum uses irony and
a powerful symbol of home.
In the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum introduces the main character, Dorothy. She is a 16 year old girl
that lives in Kanas with her aunt and uncle. She gets very little attention and has only one friend: her
dog Toto. Dorothy is described as a child and stays a child throughout the entire book, even when
facing some difficult tasks. This is a different idea than some of the other Golden Age texts such as
Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan.
One of the most famous quotes from the novel is, there is no place like home. (Baum, chapter 4) with
Dorothy walking just three steps in her silver shoes. This is just one example of a quote that hints at
her age and innocence. When children are upset, we often hear them say, I want to go home . Home
has always been a place of comfort and security. Dorothy s home doesn t resemble these
characteristics when she

Explain The Function Of The Lymphatic System
Question 1
1. Describe the function of the lymphatic system and explain how its structure enables it to carry out
its duties. Include what is lymph and how does it get into the lymphatic system, what happens to it
along the way (and what structures are involved) and what happens to it when the lymph system is
through with it...
The lymphatic system is composed of one way, low pressure vessels, with blind ended capillaries that
are remarkably permeable. The lymphatic endothelial capillary walls are anchored by collagen
filaments, and have overlapping, flap like mini valves that open when interstitial pressure is higher
than inside the lymphatic capillary. The valves allow entry to not only fluid, but to larger particles as
well; this includes proteins, pathogens, and cancer cells. The mini valves are forced shut when
pressure inside the capillaries is greater than the interstitial pressure. The vessels are equipped with
multiple valves (in the lumen) to prevent the backflow of lymph once it is milked towards the
subclavian duct, mainly by the squeezing action of the skeletal muscles, and the pressure from
respiratory inspiration.
The lymphatic system s role is to absorb fluid that is leaked from the blood capillaries and return it
back into the systemic circulation via the left and right subclavian ducts, ensuring adequate blood
volume. Additionally, it transports chyle, a fatty lymph absorbed in the small intestine through
lacteals, also returning it to systemic

China s Become A Global Superpower And Its Transformation...

Here Follows Some Verses Upon the Burning of Our House, by...
The Puritan life, although simple, demanded diligence both mentally and spiritually which put stress
on even the most faithful of followers. Although the common practice entailed brushing religious
struggles under the rug, few writers bravely wrote of their religious doubts and endeavors to become
better Puritans. Author Anne Bradstreet shows in her work Here Follows Some Verse upon the
Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666 that religious struggles are often met by Puritans and it takes
brave souls to admit their difficult time with their religion. This poem shows a woman dealing with a
religious crisis and how even though she struggles her faith still holds strong in the end. Bradstreet s

These material items have become physical representations of the memories Bradstreet created with
them so the loss is a tragic psychological event. This quote also represents the struggles that the author
had with the non materialistic Puritan lifestyle. She has put so much emphases on her material
possession that she has lost sight of what is truly important, which is God. The content expressed in
this poem mirrors the materialistic struggles most Puritans felt with their faith at one point or another.
Bradstreet makes a point to show her thought process of returning to the Puritan mindset when she
begins to question herself in her poem. The following is an example: The straight I gin my heart to
chide,/And did they wealth on earth abide?/Didst fix thy hope on mold ring dust?/The arm of flesh
didst make they trust? (37 40). The repetitive notion of the author questioning herself allows the
reader to see into her thought process regarding her current struggle with her beliefs. The author
includes this process in the poem to enable the reader to fully understand her way of thinking and
ultimately makes her writing more relatable. Bradstreet develops the content of the poem to show her
external struggle to release her material possessions and focus on the process of regaining her Puritan
beliefs, however, the form of the poem speaks louder to her unwavering internal faith. There is

Differences In Warfare During The Napoleonic War
To find the differences in warfare during the Napoleonic Wars that point towards total war, this

This battle took place in 1805 and is largely considered to be one that decided the war at sea during
the Napoleonic Wars. With Lord Nelson dying in the Battle of Trafalgar, Vice Admiral Collingwood
provides a glimpse of what the British hoped to achieve in the battle: [T]he conflict was severe; the
enemy s ships were fought with a gallantry highly honourable to their officers, but the attack on them
was irresistible, and it pleased the Almighty Disposer of all Events, to grant his Majesty s arms a
complete and glorious victory. The Battle of Trafalgar followed in the footsteps of The Glorious First
of June in that they both had the end goal of achieving decisive victories that had the potential to
change the course of the war. Collingwood not only gives a sense of nationalism comparable to Lord
Howe, but he also conveys a sense of necessity or urgency to engage in conflict. An important nuance
of total war stems from the need to constantly be in battle; to always want to engage an enemy and see
the battle through to the bitter end. These arguments are further exemplified within Collingwood s
final thoughts: I fear the numbers that have fallen will be found very great, when the returns come to
me; but it having blown a gale of wind ever since the action. Even with fears of great numbers being
sacrificed in battle, the Royal Navy continued to press forward. To the British, the number sacrificed
meant little in comparison to the necessity and glory of defeating the French. Moreover, Nelson
prepared the men for battle by saying: My Noble lads, this will be a glorious day for England,
whoever lives to see it. I shan t be satisfied with twelve ships this day, as I took at the Nile. Nelson
explicitly stated his desire for an even more decisive victory than in previous battles, showing a
remarkable sense of dissatisfaction with mediocre results. Only massive wins would be counted as

Analysis Of Leslie Marmon Silko s The Man To Send Rain Clouds
In The Man to Send Rain Clouds, and One Holy Night, Leslie Marmon Silko and Sandra Cisneros
discuss the traditions and myths of their cultures. Silko states her beliefs in the rituals or ceremonies
that her culture performs when one of her own has passed on. On the other hand, Cisneros explains the
struggles of being a teenage girl of another culture in American society. While both writers agree that
keeping their traditions and myths alive is important, Silko s story of Native American rituals gives
awareness on the tradition in the pueblo world that even in modern times they practice, Unlike
Cisneros, who s story of an unplanned teenage pregnancy after a short term relationship with a man
she barely knew, surveys what can be believed either an unfortunate or simply a typical tradition that
all teenagers are in a personal phase of rebellion against people of parental authority, and often end up
wanting to experiment with other cultures or figurative patterns of behavior, to interchange the
traditions they were raised with.
In The Man to Send Rain Clouds, Leslie Marmon Silko shows the cultural divide between Native
Americans and the priest in the story. In the priests world only god can send rain clouds but in the
Native world it s the next man s duty to speak to the cloud people and ask them to create rain for the
living. In this story the characters have a power struggle between the Native world and the white
world. The struggle has changed into a problem not of

What Are The Characteristics And Dynamics Of Liberalism...
Within the field of international relations theory, neoliberalism and liberal theory have developed out
of the notion of states cooperating within the international system. As states realized that through
cooperation additional benefits can be gained in an anarchic world, institutions whose goal was to
create cooperation among self interested states took shape. As states initiated this type of
multilateralism for mutual gain within the international system, scholars and theorist such as Stein,
Keohane, Oye, and Moravcsik among others conceptualized Neoliberal and Liberal theories and the
dynamics of the states and the system. There are key characteristics which differentiate these two
theories from others in international relations theory. Moreover, these theories analyze why and how
states, through working together were able to serve their own interests and attempt to discern the
routes which states take towards cooperation which best suit their interest. This paper will attempt to
explain the characteristics and dynamics of Liberalism and Neoliberalist theories, as well as display its
challenges and limitations.
Main tenets and actors of Liberal theory
Liberalism sees the state as a rational actor however, see the influences from within the state as the
main actor facilitating international relations. Additionally, this theory sees the states main interest are
its well being, not power within the international system. Well being of the state is translated through

Prostate Cancer And The American Cancer Society
Each year approximately 233,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer (Eggener, Cifu, Nabhan,
2015). In 2015, prostate cancer was the second most common cancer related cause of death among
United States men (Eggener, et. al., 2015). While the majority of prostate cancers are slow growing
with a 5 year survival rate of approximately 98%, statistics show that when prostate cancer is
identified as metastatic, the 5 year survival rate dramatically drops down to 20 25% (Eggener, et. al.,
2015). According to these numbers alone, it appears screening for prostate cancer would be a well
accepted practice. However, current methods of screening for this cancer are controversial and has
lead organizations like the U.S Preventative Service Task Force (USPSTF) and the American Cancer
Society (ACS) to different guidelines for screening.
Organizations are not the only ones at odds with current screening methods. Depending on which
organization a physician prefers to follow, a patient may be told to have PSA screening by one
physician and be advised to avoid PSA screening by another physician. There are several different
factors why this screening is controversial. The most important is the sensitivity and specificity of
PSA screening. Research has shown that PSA screening presents with an unusually high amount of
false positive results (U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, 2012). This raises some concerns
whether the benefit of screening outweighs the possibility of over

Use Of Foreshadowing In William Goldman s The Princess Bride
William Goldman the author of The Princess Bride uses the foreshadowing technique anticipation
both within the story and in his asides to create an edge of your seat reading experience. The concept
of foreshadowing can be seen in three areas of the book love, pain and the interjections of Goldman.
In the first chapter of the book when Buttercup is seventeen, she and Wesley declare their love to one
another followed by the immediate departure of Wesley with these parting words I ll send for you
soon. Believe me (64). Buttercup eagerly awaits the return of Wesley and is devastated when she hears
of his death after a year of waiting. When she finally meets Wesley again she is twenty one. Later on
Buttercup must wait again for Wesley to come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of my theories, he said somewhat later, is that pain involves anticipation (259). Count Rugen says
this to Wesley in the Zoo of Death before leaving Wesley with the machine that had just made the wild
dog scream. Even the way the Count says it to Wesley by pausing creates anticipation. Wesley resides
on the fifth floor of the Zoo of Death, the one Humperdink left the empty in hopes of someday finding
something worthy, something as dangerous and powerful as he was(...)so he kept the great cage of the
fifth level always in readiness (75). Prince Humperdink anticipated a monster worthy of filling the
fifth level. Westley occupies the fifth level for about three months enduring all methods of torture
from Count Rugen. Wesley knows almost as soon as he arrives in the Zoo of Death that he will die
there, and he does at the hands of Prince

How Does Louis Sachar s Holes Show Courage
Have you ever been blamed for something you didn t do? That s exactly the situation Stanley Yelnats
found himself in, in Louis Sachar s Holes. In Holes, Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake, a
correctional facility for troubled youth. Camp Green Lake is in the middle of nowhere, dry, and
desolated. Throughout the book, Stanley is faced with many challenges, that he must overcome to

The condition sat Camp Green Lake are harsh, and unsanitary. The land was barren and desolate.
(Sachar,11) For his time, Stanly has to survive the challenges of the camp. At Camp Green Lake, there
are no fences or other precautions made to keep campers at camp, because at the camp there is the
only water to found for miles. When Stanly leaves camp, he has to walk in the hot sun, for hours,
while looking for God s Thumb and Zero. When he finds Zero he must then support Zero and make a
long climb out of the lake. Then, afterwards, he must then make the long walk back to camp. He does
all this, showing great perseverance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Problem Of Female Violence
Generally speaking, men are more aggressive in nature than women. In fact, violence is the one
variable of which there are overwhelmingly skewed results proving gender differences. So we may
ask ourselves, why do women strike men inside the house in relatively equal numbers, but nearly
never resort to violence outside the home? Women for instance may argue that their aggression
towards men is harmless, and that slapping a man is quite feminine. These explanations may likely
have some validity, but neither addresses motivation for the violence, nor the context in which it
occurs. When in actuality, empirical research on female violence tells another story. Bjorkqvist and
Niemela (1992) provides us with evidence that women are as aggressive as males, but only when the
chance of retaliation is minimal (Shuler, 2010).
The Methodological Problem of Memory Methodological problems, in many cases, may skew the
results. Retrospection is greatly relied upon in Crime Victimization Studies, and bias may extend itself
to these studies as well. Our current interests may derail our accurate account of what actually
happened therefore, retrospection may not be completely reliable. One may argue that men
underreport victimization of violence by women because it is so emasculating and shaming. Women
on the other hand may make false allegations which serves their interest in divorce or child custody
hearings. Both of these assumptions are empirically groundless as evidence

Design s Influence On People With Dementia
The environmental quality has an influence on people with dementia; consequently good design can
help support these individuals. Good environmental design features comprise of navigation, signage,
lighting, flooring and seating as identified in the Small changes can make a big difference document.
A restaurant will be assessed in these areas and modifications proposed as recommended through

The lighting modifications suggested would be a bright tablecloth to reduce the glare from the tables,
ambient lighting and increase the restaurants back artificial lights equal to fifteen to twenty one meter
high candles. Current research provides empirical support for these modifications. Both Woodbridge
et al. (2016) and Marquardt, Bueter, Motzek (2014) reviewed three studies about impact of lighting on
care outcomes. These studies indicated enhanced light intensity and visual contrast related to
improved food intake and higher level of luminance lightening might be effective in functional
abilities and oral intake. Accordingly, by increased lightening in the back of the restaurant it could
improve the dining experience, but more research is still necessary to further support lighting in good

  • 3. INTRODUCTION A scholarly work that has received widespread attention and recognition in the Strategic Management area and beyond is Porter s (1980, 1985) typology of generic competitive strategies: Cost leadership, differentiation, and focus. These three actually fall into two basic categories. The focus strategy calls for concentration on a niche or a narrow segment. But Porter says that success in this strategy can be achieved either via cost leadership or differentiation. Thus, cost leadership and differentiation are the two basic strategies in Porter s typology. These two then are the subject of discussion in this paper. This contribution of Porter (1980, 1985) has had a deep and pervasive influence on business theory and practice. Since then many strategists from diverse fields have examined or made reference to his work. Most of this voluminous literature appeared during the eighties and the nineties. The purpose of this paper is to offer a critique of Porter s work, and a synthesis of this literature. Thompson and Strickland (2008, chap. 5) have expanded Porter s generic strategies from three to five: overall low cost provider strategy, broad differentiation strategy, best cost provider ... The most important choice should be between believe or action. Action should have more emphasis than belief in a religion. Therefore, Judaism is the perfect religion to accommodate right action due to its orthopraxy nature, due diligence to society, not forcing others to convert, and knowing what each individual is destined to accomplish while incorporating belief; in which it is hard to find the right combination of action and belief in other religions. However, they do fall under the regulation of governing bodies. In the United States we have the US securities and exchange commission (SEC) that regulates trading of commodities and securities that are exchanged on an open market. In April 2010 the SEC proposed revisions to the application of asset backed securities (CDO and RMBS). A few of the most important implementations are that the issuer is required to file on the SEC website a computer program that provides investors with a tool to analyze information about specific loans within the pool of assets. • 8. Understanding Our Age By Jacques Ellul Summary Within society today, many companies utilize technique which is a mode of problem solving that is used to find the one best method through efficiency and rationality. In his article Understanding Our Age, Jacques Ellul states that we are bound to see that in a society which has become extremely technical, the determining factor is both scientific research and the application of science in the form of technique (Ellul 27). Society s obsession with efficiency and rationality has succumbed workers to solutions that do not focus on their needs but rather on the fastest method possible to get the task accomplished. When a systemic problem arises, society s first response is to fix that problem with a technical solution which only fuels the unending cycle of technical solutions generating additional technical problems. ... We see results of technique in our daily lives without even realizing it and it can be problematic that society willing allows for technique to take over many facets of how we perform in aspects of our work. Ellul continues, stating that work has changed character, [it] makes people work to their maximum... [and this has become] an essential value of a world dominated by technique (Ellul 60). • 9. The Tax Rate Of The United States 1. Imagine a friend says that he doesn t want to take a job that pays slightly more money only because he will be bumped into the next tax bracket and end up taking home less income after taxes. Based on the video Engager you watched in Unit 2, how would you advise this friend? Define marginal tax rates. Then, explain why tax rates in the United States were designed to be marginal. ➢ A progressive tax, which the friend would be under in this situation, is one in which those with the highest incomes pay the higher tax rate (Video Engager 2). I would advise this friend to take a closer look at the situation; just because he is earning more money does not necessarily mean he will lose more of what he earns to taxes. Instead, different safety features are built into the process to ensure that those who earn more are not prevented from working harder or getting a promotion. For example, those with a higher income can be incentivized through tax breaks from giving to charity or even saving for retirement (Video Engager 2). These benefits encourage those in the higher income brackets to continue to be motivated to earn more. In addition, the tax rates on higher income are marginalized. Marginal tax rates mean that a high earner will only pay the higher tax on the portion of money that is above the tax bracket. In other words, everyone will pay the same percentage of tax on the first bracket of income, any income above that bracket will be taxed at a slightly higher rate, and ... It is indeed a difficult decision to make. The basis for this decision is what the reader perceives to be Sophocles dramatic issue in this play. The dramatic issue of the play is twofold: Antigone is a fanatic who is driven by her religious fever to bury the body of her criminal brother, Polyneices, against the edict of Creon. In the second part, Sophocles shows how the new King Creon s refusal to change his decision in the face of adversity is admirable, but at the same time his political morals end up destroying his family. I shall lie by his side, loving him as he has loved me; I shall be a criminal but a religious one (Soph. Ant. 82 85), she confides to Ismene, her sister. This is her attitude throughout the play: bravado in the face of the death sentence she brought upon herself, unreasonably enthusiastic about the prospect of her own death. Even at the ultimate moment, she has no fear of what death will bring. When I come to that other world my hope is strong that my coming will be a welcome to my father, and dear to you, my mother, and dear to you, my brother deeply loved (Soph. Ant. 951 955). According to Jebb, she is possessed by a burning indignation (Jebb 1902 p.12) and it is this passion which clouds her vision. Antigone s defense that she is acting in the name of the gods has no basis in the reality of the play because there is no evidence of the gods taking part in the underlying actions of the play. Antigone s zealous behavior is the antithesis of Creon s logical arguments. When Antigone is arrested and brought before Creon, her statements allude to a conspiracy set up against her: Antigone: I know that I will die of course I do even if you had not doomed me by proclamation. How Does Shakespeare Present Malvolio In Twelfth Night Shakespeare presents Malvolio (meaning ill will ) in a way that makes the characters dislike him and feel entitled to subject him to horrific and embarrassing tricks. Perhaps it is a form of release for the characters and audience members; Angela Carter states, Comedy is tragedy that happens to other people. In a way this is true since it is Shakespeare s design to create comedy in Malvolio s misfortune. This type of treatment in the real world would not be funny as it is taken too far; at first they only make fun of him but then they start to humiliate and torture him even in context of Twelfth Night being a comedy. Olivia s reaction highlights how odd she finds it and orders, Good Maria, let this fellow be looked to. The use of the word fellow shows that she pities him as she genuinely thinks he is ill, this is because instead of calling him what he is, a steward, she merely references his gender to show that she is considering him as a human. However, Shakespeare makes the situation so that Malvolio does not fully recognise that he has been tricked and therefore what he cannot understand cannot affect him. However, there are many restrictions for it to be considered a living thing. Virus is a big part of our lives, and there is a controversy whether it is a living thing or not. I believe that a virus should not be considered living thing because they lack many of the properties that scientists associate with living organisms. A big reason of why viruses should not be considered a living thing is because they are not able to reproduce sexually or asexually. Instead the only way they can reproduce is to attack cells by injecting DNA in the cell. Then the cell makes more viruses and splits open, releasing the viruses and letting them spread. That means that viruses can only reproduce when there is a living organism. Without them, they will never exist. Using simulation, they showed that the breeding value could be predicted with an accuracy of 0.85 from marker data alone. The major limitation to the implementation of genomic selection has been the large number of markers required and the cost of genotyping these markers (Grapes et al. 2004). Recently both these limitations have been overcome in most livestock species following the sequencing of the livestock genomes, the subsequent availability of hundreds of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). As a result of these developments there are many livestock breeding companies planning to implement genomic selection in the near future (Grapes et al. 2004). Statistical analysis to calculate EBV from genome wide DNA markers it is convenient to think of the process in three steps: i. Use the markers to deduce the genotype of each animal at each QTL. ii. Estimate the effects of each QTL genotype on the trait. iii. Sum all the QTL effects for selection candidates to obtain their genomic EBV (GEBV). As the markers are unlikely to be evenly spaced, and due to the variable nature of the LD, we could still not expect that all QTL would have an SNP in complete LD with them. This suggests that we need denser markers than are currently available. The technology to achieve this is available (Parks et al. 2007). An additional problem arises if we wish to estimate the effect of each marker across more than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Ige Antibodies Live On The Surface Of Cells IgE antibodies live on the surface of cells that are specifically designed to be involved in the inflammatory response, mast cells and basophils. Mast cells are found predominantly in your surface tissues (tissues close to the external environment) such as in your skin and in the mucous membranes of your nose. Once the IgE has attached itself to an allergen, it sets off a series of events within the cells that lead to degranulation, which is the process that releases molecules from vesicles that regulate immune responses. Amongst these molecules is histamine. According to Nordqvist (2015), histamine causes effects on the body by binding to histamine receptors. There are four types of histamine receptors, H1 H4, but the main receptor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another symptom caused by histamines, shortness of breath and asthmatic like wheezing, when smooth muscles contract in the airways. Antihistamines alleviate the effects of histamine on the body, hence their name antihistamine. Taking an antihistamine drug such as Claritin, Allegra, or Zyrtec prevents these effects. The drug races to the H1 receptor and competes with the histamine. The histamine cannot bind wherever the drug binds, therefore the histamine can t cause any irritating effects. It s always better to take an antihistamine drug before you come into contact with an allergen. That way the antihistamine will have a higher chance of binding to to the receptor than the histamine does. Antihistamines usually don t have side effects but drowsiness is one side effect that is hard to avoid. When an antihistamine crosses the BBB, or blood brain barrier, that exists between the circulatory system and the nervous system to stop random molecules from getting into the brain and causing untold havoc (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2002) drowsiness occurs. The first generation of antihistamine drugs, such as diphenhydramine, crossed the BBB almost effortlessly and once they had crossed it sedation would set it. Big Bang Theory Or A Big Fabrication Adair Day AP English IV Mrs. Britt Collins 14 March 2016 Big Bang Theory or a Big Fabrication The concept of creation has boggled human s minds for centuries. Human nature has an intuitive sense of longing for an answer to solve the unknown, and creation embodies the concept of unknown. In an effort to compile reason and scientific knowledge, an explanation of the formation of the universe was formed and is widely known as The Big Bang Theory. The Big Bang Theory is considered, ...the leading scientific explanation for the formation of the universe (Howell). The Big Bang Theory articulates that before this event there was nothing; and after it there was something. This suggestion to how the universe was created was originally born from the sighting that the surrounding galaxies are moving away from our own at an immense speed as if they had been propelled by some force (Howell). The standard theory states that the entire universe originated as a condensed, infinitely pressured, singularity, which defies the laws of today s understanding of physics. It is a misconception this event occurred as an explosion; rather it resembled more of an expansion. At one moment there was nothing in existence and in the following, the universe expanded as a balloon would, from a sub atomic particle, to all that it is today. This notion of how the universe was created, is nothing more than a shot into the dark, literally, and holds no validity. At this exact moment there are roughly 100,000 ... • 23. First Opium War Research Paper Good morning class and Mrs Bennett. The Hypothesis for this topic is that the First Opium War caused problems in society because the criminal rate increased, as well as the local consumption of the drug. This presentation will be discussing mainly what opium is, what the first opium war was, and why it started. The Opium War was a battle in China that occurred during the mid 19th century. This war was between western countries, such as Britain, and the Qing Dynasty, which ruled China between 1644 and 1911. The First Opium War was conducted from 1839 to 1842, and was between China and Britain. The reasoning for the war occurring was caused by China s attempts to withhold the Opium trade. It was over diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of foreign nationals in China. Opium was illegally being imported into China, through India, by the British. They grew the opium on their plantations in India. At first, the British were addicted to stimulating Chinese tea. Trade imbalance occurred due to the Chinese buying few European products and demanding Gold or Silver in return. The reverse flow of Silver and the increasing number of opium addicts alarmed Chinese officials, and resulted in over 20,000 chests of opium to be confiscated. As opium was being imported into china, it caused unrest in society, the local consumption to increase, and the decrease in the price of the drug. Being a stimulant drug, Opium spread throughout the country, badly affecting its nation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While she does collect evidence and testimonies that suggest to the groups activates, Oedipa s major support to the group s current state is deduced logically to remove any chance of some other possibility existing about Tristero s doings. However, even with the the evolution of human neuroimaging over the last 15 20 years, still some researchers use this technique in a way that resembles a kind of modern day phrenology (Kringebach Rolls, 2004). • 28. Rhetorical Analysis Of `` Catch `` By Chris Leggett Essay There are many ways to write a literary essay on a text, choosing the most effective method depends on what the writer is trying to accomplish. What is most important is understanding what one is writing about and effectively delivering it. In the sample essay, Tossing Metaphors Together in Robert Francis s Catch by Chris Leggett, Leggett writes an analysis paper in which he analyzes the extended metaphor of the poem. While in the sample essay, How William Faulkner s Narrator Cultivates a Rose for Emily by Tony Groulx, Groulx writes a research paper where he researches various aspects of the story. These two essays demonstrate two distinct approaches taken to discuss a poem and a story. From beginning to end, both approaches are a process that require focus and patience. At the end they should both provide the reader with further insight into the text. To write an effective thesis driven essay about a literary text, the writer must understand the text, organize their information clearly, and support their papers purpose. In Leggett s essay, he analyzes the poem Catch by Robert Francis. Poems can be challenging to analyze, as there are many elements to consider, such as metaphors, symbolism, and tone. Leggett chooses to focus on only four key words from the poem, then constructs his essay around each word. He states that the entire poem s meaning can be cut down to these four words, attitudes, latitudes, interludes, and altitudes. By focusing on only a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both Peter Pan and Wizard of Oz, use childhood to promote The Golden Age . According to Marriam Webster.com, this term is described as, a period of great happiness, prosperity, and achievement. But the golden age is also defined as a period where authors discovered that children were more than innocent angels and that their childhoods are important, joyous, and unique. Both authors, Barrie and Baum show this throughout their novels. Barrie uses imagination and a fear of growing up while, Baum uses irony and a powerful symbol of home. In the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum introduces the main character, Dorothy. She is a 16 year old girl that lives in Kanas with her aunt and uncle. She gets very little attention and has only one friend: her dog Toto. Dorothy is described as a child and stays a child throughout the entire book, even when facing some difficult tasks. Include what is lymph and how does it get into the lymphatic system, what happens to it along the way (and what structures are involved) and what happens to it when the lymph system is through with it... The lymphatic system is composed of one way, low pressure vessels, with blind ended capillaries that are remarkably permeable. The lymphatic endothelial capillary walls are anchored by collagen filaments, and have overlapping, flap like mini valves that open when interstitial pressure is higher than inside the lymphatic capillary. The valves allow entry to not only fluid, but to larger particles as well; this includes proteins, pathogens, and cancer cells. The mini valves are forced shut when pressure inside the capillaries is greater than the interstitial pressure. The vessels are equipped with multiple valves (in the lumen) to prevent the backflow of lymph once it is milked towards the subclavian duct, mainly by the squeezing action of the skeletal muscles, and the pressure from respiratory inspiration. The lymphatic system s role is to absorb fluid that is leaked from the blood capillaries and return it back into the systemic circulation via the left and right subclavian ducts, ensuring adequate blood volume. With Lord Nelson dying in the Battle of Trafalgar, Vice Admiral Collingwood provides a glimpse of what the British hoped to achieve in the battle: [T]he conflict was severe; the enemy s ships were fought with a gallantry highly honourable to their officers, but the attack on them was irresistible, and it pleased the Almighty Disposer of all Events, to grant his Majesty s arms a complete and glorious victory. The Battle of Trafalgar followed in the footsteps of The Glorious First of June in that they both had the end goal of achieving decisive victories that had the potential to change the course of the war. Collingwood not only gives a sense of nationalism comparable to Lord Howe, but he also conveys a sense of necessity or urgency to engage in conflict. An important nuance of total war stems from the need to constantly be in battle; to always want to engage an enemy and see the battle through to the bitter end. These arguments are further exemplified within Collingwood s final thoughts: I fear the numbers that have fallen will be found very great, when the returns come to me; but it having blown a gale of wind ever since the action. Even with fears of great numbers being sacrificed in battle, the Royal Navy continued to press forward. To the British, the number sacrificed meant little in comparison to the necessity and glory of defeating the French. Moreover, Nelson prepared the men for battle by saying: My Noble lads, this will be a glorious day for England, whoever lives to see it. I shan t be satisfied with twelve ships this day, as I took at the Nile. Nelson explicitly stated his desire for an even more decisive victory than in previous battles, showing a remarkable sense of dissatisfaction with mediocre results. Only massive wins would be counted as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Analysis Of Leslie Marmon Silko s The Man To Send Rain Clouds In The Man to Send Rain Clouds, and One Holy Night, Leslie Marmon Silko and Sandra Cisneros discuss the traditions and myths of their cultures. Silko states her beliefs in the rituals or ceremonies that her culture performs when one of her own has passed on. On the other hand, Cisneros explains the struggles of being a teenage girl of another culture in American society. While both writers agree that keeping their traditions and myths alive is important, Silko s story of Native American rituals gives awareness on the tradition in the pueblo world that even in modern times they practice, Unlike Cisneros, who s story of an unplanned teenage pregnancy after a short term relationship with a man she barely knew, surveys what can be believed either an unfortunate or simply a typical tradition that all teenagers are in a personal phase of rebellion against people of parental authority, and often end up wanting to experiment with other cultures or figurative patterns of behavior, to interchange the traditions they were raised with. In The Man to Send Rain Clouds, Leslie Marmon Silko shows the cultural divide between Native Americans and the priest in the story. In the priests world only god can send rain clouds but in the Native world it s the next man s duty to speak to the cloud people and ask them to create rain for the living. In this story the characters have a power struggle between the Native world and the white world. The struggle has changed into a problem not of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. What Are The Characteristics And Dynamics Of Liberalism... Within the field of international relations theory, neoliberalism and liberal theory have developed out of the notion of states cooperating within the international system. As states realized that through cooperation additional benefits can be gained in an anarchic world, institutions whose goal was to create cooperation among self interested states took shape. As states initiated this type of multilateralism for mutual gain within the international system, scholars and theorist such as Stein, Keohane, Oye, and Moravcsik among others conceptualized Neoliberal and Liberal theories and the dynamics of the states and the system. There are key characteristics which differentiate these two theories from others in international relations theory. Moreover, these theories analyze why and how states, through working together were able to serve their own interests and attempt to discern the routes which states take towards cooperation which best suit their interest. This paper will attempt to explain the characteristics and dynamics of Liberalism and Neoliberalist theories, as well as display its challenges and limitations. Main tenets and actors of Liberal theory Liberalism sees the state as a rational actor however, see the influences from within the state as the main actor facilitating international relations. Additionally, this theory sees the states main interest are its well being, not power within the international system. Well being of the state is translated through the ... • 45. Prostate Cancer And The American Cancer Society Each year approximately 233,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer (Eggener, Cifu, Nabhan, 2015). In 2015, prostate cancer was the second most common cancer related cause of death among United States men (Eggener, et. al., 2015). While the majority of prostate cancers are slow growing with a 5 year survival rate of approximately 98%, statistics show that when prostate cancer is identified as metastatic, the 5 year survival rate dramatically drops down to 20 25% (Eggener, et. al., 2015). According to these numbers alone, it appears screening for prostate cancer would be a well accepted practice. However, current methods of screening for this cancer are controversial and has lead organizations like the U.S Preventative Service Task Force (USPSTF) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) to different guidelines for screening. Organizations are not the only ones at odds with current screening methods. Depending on which organization a physician prefers to follow, a patient may be told to have PSA screening by one physician and be advised to avoid PSA screening by another physician. There are several different factors why this screening is controversial. The most important is the sensitivity and specificity of PSA screening. Research has shown that PSA screening presents with an unusually high amount of false positive results (U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, 2012). This raises some concerns whether the benefit of screening outweighs the possibility of over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. The Problem Of Female Violence Generally speaking, men are more aggressive in nature than women. In fact, violence is the one variable of which there are overwhelmingly skewed results proving gender differences. So we may ask ourselves, why do women strike men inside the house in relatively equal numbers, but nearly never resort to violence outside the home? Women for instance may argue that their aggression towards men is harmless, and that slapping a man is quite feminine. These explanations may likely have some validity, but neither addresses motivation for the violence, nor the context in which it occurs. When in actuality, empirical research on female violence tells another story. Bjorkqvist and Niemela (1992) provides us with evidence that women are as aggressive as males, but only when the chance of retaliation is minimal (Shuler, 2010). The Methodological Problem of Memory Methodological problems, in many cases, may skew the results. Retrospection is greatly relied upon in Crime Victimization Studies, and bias may extend itself to these studies as well. Our current interests may derail our accurate account of what actually happened therefore, retrospection may not be completely reliable. One may argue that men underreport victimization of violence by women because it is so emasculating and shaming. Women on the other hand may make false allegations which serves their interest in divorce or child custody hearings. Both of these assumptions are empirically groundless as evidence ...
