The Ramayana Essay
The Ramayana Essay
The Ramayana by R.K. Narayan s is an epic story that provides insights into many aspects of Indian
culture and still today influences the politics, religion and art of modern India. He based his novel on a
poem from one of India s great Sanskrit epics also called Ramayana. He revived this ancient story and
condensed it and set in modern times. This is story of adventure and friendship as well as a story of
psychological insight, spiritual meaning and of wisdom. R.K. Narayan does an excellent job of
portraying all these aspects throughout his novel. The meanings of The Ramayana are found through
the actions and personalities of its principal characters. It is part of the sacred literature for the Hindus

Soorpanaka is jealous of Sita but is chopped up by Lakshmana and flees to Ravana for help.
Ravana is the king Lanka; he has ten heads and twenty arms. Soorpanaka describes Sita in such
graphic detail that Ravana immediately falls in love with her. Ravana tricks Sita while Rama is away
and captures her and takes her away in a chariot.
Rama is upset to discover Sita s disappearance and he and Lakshmana head out to find her. On their
travels through the forests they meet Sugreeva and Hanuman. Hanuman and Sugreeva promise to help
Rama in his search for Sita. Sugreeva and Hanuman organizes a huge army of their own people. They
cannot find her and Rama becomes so discouraged he thinks of suicide. Until Hanuman finds out he
can be any size he wants so he travels to Lanka. There he talks to Sita but on his way out is caught by
Ravana. Hanuman becomes big again and destroys Ravana s city.
Rama then builds a giant bridge to Lanka. Everyone helped in the construction of this bridge. And
Rama finally reaches Lanka. He then fights Ravan himself and badly humiliates him and defeats him
with the help of the gods who are tired of Ravana s evilness. The final battle between them is crazy.
The air is filled with arrows but Rama manages to fend them all off. Then a lot of different asthras are
employed by both guys. When Rama chops off Ravana s heads and arms they regrow as quickly as
they are severed. In the end Rama uses the Brahmasthra

Essay On Improved As A Writer
How I Have Improved as a Writer Ever since I started attending Mrs.Kigar s 1st hour Senior Comp.
class, my writing skills have expanded into a new level. I learned a lot about writing for example;
before this class I had never heard of parallelism and didn t know the impact it had on writing.
Another part of my stylistic learning was learning about transitions, semicolons, commas, and
apostrophes. I also wrote almost every different style of paper too which really helps in improving the
ability to write. One thing I have improved on is using sophisticated vocabulary in my papers. For
example, from my compare and contrast paper I wrote I said, The boxer engine also gives the exhaust
a much better sound, which is more dulcet to the ear. (Consolla, 1) This is a prime example of
sophisticated vocabulary use in my papers. Dashes have come to be very confusing for some people,
but after reading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Writing journals helps with flow and consistency. Before this class I could never write about a topic
for 300 words. Whenever I had to write a paper, I would always draw to a blank and never get
anything done. Thanks to writing journals I have improved on my flow and consistency to write stuff
down. Some people didn t like the movie we watched earlier in the semester, The Words; but I thought
it was a excellent movie. I thought it was the perfect movie to write a movie review on. I really like
movies and enjoy watching them and criticizing them, but I had never known the write way to do it.
The movie review essay really helped to improve my writing ability. The writing ability of me, Jack
Consolla, has improved quite well throughout the semester. I have written almost every single type of
essay and have gone into detail about them and have also gone into detailed stylistic learning about
grammar uses. I feel as if I m more ready for college and can t wait to get the ball

Planning Policies On Social Life
Planning policies on Social Life in Cities
For year s urban policy and strategy has been dominated by thinking about the physical city: landmark
architecture, transport, housing, urban development, and increasingly the technological infrastructure
to create smarter, more productive, and greener cities. Clearly social issues like health, education,
employment and public safety matter to city leaders but policy and public services deal with people in
the abstract rather than the particular, which is why so often, plans diverge from reality in
unpredictable and unintended ways. The social life of cities, in particular the ordinary, the small scale
and mundane aspects of urban life, are commonly overlooked as a source of insight and inspiration for
city planners and decision makers.
Looking at the everyday life of city streets and neighborhoods provides a perspective on cities, social
change and the radical variety of urban life, that is dramatically different to thinking about the city as
an intelligent network or transport system with predefined ideas about how people will behave that is
more of how the social planning do. Social planning is the process by which policymakers legislators,
government agencies, planners, and, often, funders try to solve community problems or improve
conditions in the community by devising and implementing policies intended to have certain results.
These policies may take the form of laws, regulations, incentives, media campaigns,

The Impact Of Technology On Communication
In the year 2017, technology has advanced and sneaked into the lives of just about everyone.
Technology can be found everywhere, at any time. The most common being cellphones. With the
invention of cellphones and other devices, people have access to technology no matter what they are
doing or where they may be. This brings up the question of whether or not technology is hurting the
way people communicate. Journalists like Thomas Friedman, James Butler, and Steven Johnson seek
to answer this question. It seems that the popular opinion is yes, that technology is impacting
communication negatively. Technology is not hindering communication, but is only changing the way
we communicate. Technology has improved communication in businesses, has connected people
around the world, and has only replaced previous distractions such as the newspaper or radio.
In the business world, people should be in touch and communicate effectively. In the past, businesses
would regularly call meetings and with stand long hours of confusing discussions and debates until
they finally came to an understanding or agreement. Now, thanks to technology, people in the work
force can keep in touch and get their message across a lot more clear and easier. James Butler writes,
Not only is it fast, but the response you receive is often more concise, saving time that could have
been wasted by sitting through a marathon conference. Just sum it up in an email, please (1). No more
confusion or time being taken out

American Indian Culture Influence
Contemporary American Indian art and literature both have immense cross cultural influence. They
take the old and the new to create something unique and beautiful that is distinctively American
Indian; it reflects hardships and happiness, growth and inhibitions. Contemporary American Indian art
has immense cross cultural influence. It consists of hints of traditional crafts, like weaving and
basketry, and contemporary art trends like readymades and inflatable sculptures. In paintings, it may
consist of a traditional American Indian woman languishing next to a life size balloon animal, or an
Everlast punching bag covered in ornate beads (Brooks). American Indians are constantly
experimenting with media and perspectives. They often merge the utilitarian artifacts of traditional
culture with the political and philosophical musings of contemporary society. Bits of popular and
commercial culture, such as branded sporting equipment, are transformed into ... Show more content

It is believed that bold colors and strokes give dimension and character. Every artist is different, but a
common theme is to show some sort of representation of American Indian culture. One artist, John
Nieto, works to paint Native American themes so he can step back in time and shine some light on
those people and their culture; he hopes to show their humanity and their dignity. Throughout my
readings, this is a common theme (Stool). Native American literature came into being because of the
arrival of Europeans. Before they arrived there were only oral traditions. In the 19th century, Native
American literature was text based and written in English, this was a result from the English taught in
missionary schools that Native American children attended. The early literature was a combination of
common American literary genres, such as autobiographies and novels, and Native American
narratives, such as the traditional trickster (Early Native American

Examples Of Psychoanalysis In Alien
C. Psychoanalysis as a political weapon in Alien
i. Male action and female inaction There are two major examples of male activeness and female
passiveness in Alien: the chestburster scene and the differences between Ripley and Dallas as the
protagonist. In the iconic chestburster scene the crew are seated peacefully as they prepare to return to
stasis, however this peace is disturbed when Kane convulses and a chestburster bursts out of him.
Only the male characters are active in this scene: Parker and Dallas initially comfort and hold Kane
down, Brett holds Kane s legs down, and Ash runs from the other side (farther aways then Ripley and
Lambert) to help. Ripley and Lambert initially reach out towards Kane but eventually watch in horror
as the alien bursts from him. Dallas, Parker, and Brett were closer to Kane than Ripley so they have
more reason for helping; and Ash is the science officer so it makes sense for him to rush towards a
medical emergency. Switching one of the male characters with a female character could have
expounded on the seriousness of the scene (before the arrival of the chestburster).
While subtle, the difference between the actions taken by Dallas and Ripley exemplify the
heterosexual differences in labor. Dallas protagonist is constantly in motion: investigating the signal,
defending Ripley from the dead facehugger, and hunting the alien in the vents. Ripley s actions as
protagonist are less active, especially since she follows Dallas vent plan and

Legalizing Prostitution
As shown by the safe conditions the Netherlands has created, prostitution can be a safe and well
controlled profession. If it remains illegal it forces women to work underground in unsafe conditions
and without proper health and safety precautions. The Netherlands is now one of the best know
examples of open, legalized prostitution because of its innovative advancements ( Legalizing
Prostitution ). Under the government s new laws, safer environments are in place for prostitutes to
work, and there has been a large creation of policies to promote safe sex. For example, brothels
became legal as early as 2000 though the move is widely controversial ( Prostitution in the
Netherlands ). Brothel owners feel as though it is unfair because it forces ... Show more content on

Before prostitution was legalized in Nevada, it was greatly profitable in many towns in the West. All
other western states have shut down establishments selling sex, except for Nevada. In as early as 1937,
a law was developed during weekly health checks for all prostitutes. The mandatory testing began in
1986 requiring weekly STD testing and monthly testing for HIV and syphilis. Condoms have been
mandatory since 1988 for oral sex and intercourse, and laws have even gone as far as making brothel
owners liable for customers who become infected with HIV after visitation ( Legalizing Prostitution ).
Despite the legal status of brothels, there are copious rules owners must follow to uphold their
establishments. Brothels can only exist in counties of populations less than 400,000. As a result of this
law, brothels are illegal in Las Vegas (Giang). In 1979, a state law banned brothels from advertising in
counties where it was an illegal act. Brothels have even gone as far as advertising large parking spaces
for truck drivers who wish to stop during their commutes. Brothels have many restrictions in Nevada,
but prostitutes must follow rules as well. In the majority of Nevada s counties, prostitutes must be of
twenty one years or older, with the exception of Storey and Lyon counties where the age is eighteen.
Prostitutes are encouraged to be workers of brothels, and soliciting outside of brothels is considered a
misdemeanor. Alongside legal prostitution, illegal prostitution numbers are flourishing ( Legalizing
Prostitution ). Furthermore, sex workers are considered independent contractors and do not receive
unemployment, retirement, or health care benefits. In order for the women to receive any benefits
from the state, they must register with the county sheriffs to receive documentation of their work.

Catalase Test Essay
Results The catalase test was positive for unknown #4. After addition of hydrogen peroxide the
sample began to bubble. The bubbles indicated that the unknown produced catalase that broke down
the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas ( Microbugz ). The initial coagulase test was
inconclusive. After the addition of coagulase in the second attempt, the sample began to clump
indicating that the unknown bacteria possessed the ability to produce fibrin barriers ( Microbugz ).
After the 18 hour incubation period, the bile esculin tube turned completely brown. This indicated that
unknown #4 could hydrolyze esculin to esculetin and dextrose which reacts with the ferric citrate in
the media to produce a dark brown or black color ( Microbugz ). ... Show more content on

aureus. Since B. subtilus was not an organism available in the lab, at this point, it was safe to assume
that unknown #4 was S. aureus. The positive results for the bile esculin and blood agar and the
negative SFB results provided further evidence of S. aureus. The only test that did not go as planned
was the MSA. No growth was observed on either of the plates even though S. aureus can grow in
hypersaline environments and ferment mannitol. The plate should have turned yellow from acid
production and exhibited growth. Perhaps the sample was dying and couldn t grow on either MSA
plate or the strain possessed a mutation that took away its ability to grow on that media. The only way
to know for sure would be to run more tests and perhaps a sequence of the genome to scan for
mutations or abnormalities. However, the back up TSA slant turning blue, albeit not a biochemical
test, also supported the conclusion that S. aureus was unknown #4 because S. aureus can turn TSA
slants blue. The Gram negative rod, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, can also turn TSA slants blue because
of pyocyanin production, but the majority of the biochemical tests supported S.

The Education System Of Saudi Arabia, Us, And World Economy
Report for 2014 states that there are more than 110,000 Saudi students enrolled in American
universities. The influx is primarily triggered by the scholarship program introduced by King
Abdullah, which allows qualified students to attend higher education in the United States with their
tuition fee, school expenses, and health insurance paid for by the government. The same is also
attributed by the fact that thirteen of the top universities in the world are in the United States whereas
the education system in Saudi Arabia is still in a developmental stage.
Accepting international students benefit the Saudi Arabia, US, and world economy. Hence, many US
universities have expressed their intention to accommodate Saudi students and to provide ... Show

The second solution is seen as the most feasible of the three.
Discussion
The conditions in universities accepting international students need considerable attention. The reason
students go abroad to study is very clear through world class education, these students will turn into
valuable human assets of their country. They benefit their host country financially, contributing the
largest portion of the billions of dollars earned by the US each academic year (Wilson, 2011).
Internationalization of students also promote global understanding by adding cultural diversity to
campuses, and by facilitating better relations between the US and their home country. On the other
hand, completing a four or five year degree in an unfamiliar environment, and being exposed to an
education system that is very distinct from the one they are used to, do not come about easily for the
Saudi students.
Comparing the Education System between the US and Saudi Arabia The differences in the education
system implemented in the US and Saudi Arabia can be best compared by discussing the role of their
governments in education, and the academic cultures that the students from these two countries are

Benefits of Military Service

Mandatory military service is a course to make a fit and capable citizen. First of all, military service
can help one s character . More specifically it gives good tools so that people can work well in a team,
be more organized in everyday event and good discipline. Secondly, it can offer education to people in
need. Furthermore it will help people in bad neighbourhoods or is living trough a thought time and
give those without the means to be in a home and have a job. Thirdly but not least mandatory military
service could be looked at as a dept owed to one s country, loved ones who are protected if ever

people to have an education. Many people in Canada are homeless or living on money from the
government because their incapable of getting a job. As well mandatory military service will give
those people the tool and education they need to have a good job and a place to stay. As
educators.about.com state in this quote military service can be very helpful. The military provides
many educational opportunities both during the term of enlistment and after your service is complete.
( educators.about.com). As the quote says the military can offer an education during your time in the
military and even after. This would make a huge change on the amount of homeless and poor people
in our country. not only does it offer a basic education the military can also provide more specified
training in other career paths anywhere from mechanic to nurse. Mandatory military service would not
only help the people but help the community and hole country. Other profitable value can be attributed
to this program. The mandatory military service program could help young adult

Compare And Contrast Kennedy And Nixon Election
Kennedy and Nixon Elections in the United States of America
John F. Kennedy vs. Richard Nixon In 1960 the Cold War tensions were rising, therefore the election
campaign was mainly dominated by this topic. Public opinion polls showed that more than a half of
American people thought the war with the Soviet Union was inevitable. The two candidates who
ended up chasing after the presidency were a barely known democrat senator John F. Kennedy and
vice president republican Richard Nixon. They both promised more advanced science and technology
in order to win the race with communism in these fields. At the beginning of his campaign, Kennedy

The two candidates are similar with the previous examples. Senator from Illinois Barack Obama, who
ran as a democrat, was rather new, but he had ideas of change. Republican candidate John McCain
was very experienced and it wasn t the first time for him to compete for presidency. It is said that
people were choosing between change and experience and at some point the votes were almost
balanced. John McCain is a strong conservative who defends integrity and moral values. He followed
his father and became a naval aviator. McCain was almost killed Vietnam War, so he was well
respected by his contenders and considered as a charismatic man beyond his political circle of
acquaintances. However, he is a moderated republican who doesn t hesitate to take a different position
than his republican fellows. Barack Obama is the first African American president in the history and
has spoken often of his multicultural background: his father was from Kenya and his mother from
Kansas, and they met at the University of Hawaii. Obama is frequently referred to as an exceptional

Objectivity In Autophenonmenology And Heterophenomenology.
Objectivity in Autophenonmenology and Heterophenomenology
In the journal How to Study Human Consciousness Empirically, Daniel Dennett claims that people are
often just wrong about what they are doing and how they are doing it. Rather than having an objective
and complete understanding of our own intentions and processes, we tend to use assumptions as
knowledge, alter facts to align with our beliefs, and theorize about causes and effects. As a result,
studies of traditional phenomenology (referred to in this situation as autophenomenology) are often
clouded by personal biases and misinterpretations. The evidence of this confabulation is very similar
to a curious child it reveals itself through one repeated question: why? For example, ... Show more

This intrinsic subjectivity is important to keep in mind when studying consciousness from a
heterophenomenological perspective. The only true basis we have to determine the individual
experience of another person is what they communicate to us. If this communication is inherently
jumbled with misunderstandings and theories of one s qualia, the data on which heterophenomenology
is based is flawed and, consequently, so is heterophenomenology itself. Rather than providing a
scientific third person view of consciousness, it creates more of a collective fictional narrative that
describes the average experiences of others. In analogous terms, heterophenomenology aims to create
a textbook, but can only produce a pop culture magazine. This view may be debated by analyzing the
validity of personal experience. The fact that an individual s view of their own internal processes is
flawed could be seen as irrelevant; in the end, what truly matters to the study of consciousness is what
one is experiencing. If what one believes differs from the truth, does this incongruity not reveal key
factors of consciousness? Furthermore, these subjective claims can be cross referenced with scientific
facts to neutralize human error. This can be seen in one of the examples above, in which an individual
claims that they went to a restaurant because they were hungry because they had not eaten in

The Identificity Of Technology, Communication, And Digital...
How closely are you connected with those around you? How much do you rely on your phone not just
for communication but also for finding answers to questions or even keeping a schedule? Have you
consulted artificial intelligence about your dating questions? We as a society have moved into this
dependence on everything technology, artificial, and social media. We would much rather message or
post a question about a certain topic than actually ask somebody in person. And it s not just for
convenience, as we become more and more dependent on social media, texting, posting, and
technology in general, we subconsciously continue to wear down our ability to communicate and trust
one another on a physical level. A simple conversation with another person can go a lot further than an
email or text message. But why do we forfeit the physical interaction with someone for a digital
communication that simply does not have the lasting impression that a physical interaction has? As
stated by Sherry Turkle, in her article Flight From Conversation. We ve become accustomed to a new
way of being alone together. Technology enabled, we are able to be with one another, and also
elsewhere, connected to wherever we want to be. We want to customize our lives . (Turkle 49) Simply
put we are becoming more self important and more content socializing by ourselves. We like to have
things our way and we like to have it on our time. Turkle then continues on to say that A high school

Christina Rossetti Feminist Criticism
H. Bertens describes female stereotypes to come under four labels an immoral and dangerous
seductress, the woman as the eternally dissatisfied shrew, the woman as cute but essentially helpless,
the woman as unworldly, self sacrificing angel and so on. These labels were commonly found in both
androtexts and gynotexts as feminist criticism s attention drew towards female writers by giving them
more prominence and esteem, yet they were found to both reject the traditional female form and
succumbed to the lure of stereotypical representations. Christina Rossetti was one who was found to
come under such scrutiny with her poems Maude Clare , No, Thank You John , and In an Artist s
Studio to convey differing constructions of women. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately, Rossetti s descriptions of the woman are again stereotypes that do not explore the true
identity of the woman, but she is a symbol of the Victorian ideal woman. Yet, it could be argued that
Rossetti is using this stereotype to challenge this stereotype, and is not succumbing to the lure of using
stereotypes, but in fact objecting to the superficial and without depth characters that appeared in
Victorian literature and art. The denouement of not as she is, but as she fills his dream appears to
strengthen this point as the woman in the painting has been denied all sense of self as she has been
changed into something she has not, and is left to provide for his interpretation. Thus, Rossetti does
use stereotypes within In An Artist s Studio, however she uses them to object to the Victorian ideal of
a woman, and the repetitiveness in art and literature because they do not represent women for what
they are, and exist for the male gaze as in this poem.
Similarly, Rossetti s Maude Clare highlights the issues faced by women in the Victorian era as the

Greek Mythology And The Lightening Thief
It is a lovely day out, the bright sun shining down, the smell of beautiful flowers, the sounds of birds
chirping. Then, a chariot sweeps across a meadow, taking one unfortunate goddess, deep deep down to
the frightful underworld, to be seated by the King of the Dead,
Hades. Greek mythology is very interesting and can also be very interestingly weird. In the lightening
thief we see the very interesting part about Greek mythology. The lightening thief uses the modern day
society to tell the adventure packed story. In this essay I will give you an overview of Greek
mythology, along with a summary and analysis of The Lightening Thief.
Hero is the main theme of this story. We see the theme of hero throughout various parts of
2
the story. Courage, Love and sacrifice, and man vs. society all connect back to the idea of heroism.
Cultural and Historical Context
The Lightening Thief story is set in modern day time. Around 2000 2004 is where it all starts.
Although the setting is modern day, he author is telling Greek mythology, which began in
500 BC. Greek mythology is very interestingly different. Greek mythology also includes a number of
monsters and strange creatures such as the one eyed Cyclops in the Odysseus story, a gigantic boar in
the fabled Kalydonian hunt, sphinxes, giant snakes, fire breathing bulls and more. These creatures may
represent chaos and lack of reason, for example, the centaurs halfman and half horse. (Cartwright,

What Is Racism In Huck Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most controversial books in
American literature. Many students, parents, and teachers have been offended by this novel being a
mandatory reading in high school. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be a mandatory
reading for all juniors at Lake Oswego High School because of its historical context and important
insight into racism at the time period. The use of pejorative language throughout the novel is
polarizing due to the fact that many are offended by the words used, but others accept because of the
historical context. The n word is used a total of 219 times in Huck Finn. Many find the use of the word
this many times is excessive and unnecessary. The Adventures of ... Show more content on

Interpersonal racism is when someone has racist ideas instilled in their mind. It is nearly impossible
not to have any interpersonal racism in some form. An example would be having a new black kid at
school and the fact that he is black is the first thing that comes to mind. Interpersonal racism comes
largely from institutional racism. It mostly means when the government fails to provide appropriate
conditions for criminal justice, employment, housing, health care, political power, and education.
Institutional racism was at an all time high during the time period of Huck Finn. If you were an
African American, you were either a slave, or a free person with little to no chance at success in
America. Racism at the institutional level is a major contributing factor to interpersonal racism. How
the government treats a certain group makes you feel like that is okay but you do not really know why.
The ideas of racism have been instilled in everyone s mind forever and the government does that
change anything by treating African Americans like property when Huck Finn takes place. The
character of Huck Finn shows interpersonal racism throughout the novel because it was socially
acceptable to be racist to African Americans because most of them were slaves at the time. An
example of this is when Huck was confused that Jim was not as stupid as he thought Well, he was
right; he was most always right; he had

The Culture Of Hip-Hop Or Pop Dance Elements

main factors on how Hip hop has impacted our culture. Beyoncé s dark leotard outfit in the video
demonstrates the revealing clothing that woman started to wear during our time. In the previous

Taeyang choreography is very similar to Justin Timberlake where they use a lot of hand movement to

his own solo and the background dancers have partners. This movement is like how we will have to

Airport Air Pollution
E. Testa, C. Giammusso, M. Bruno and P. Maggiore, Analysis of environmental benefits resulting
from use of hydrogen, Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy, vol. 16, pp. 875 890, 2013.
This article is from the Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy and the authors of the article are
from the Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy. The intended audience of this article are the airport
planners and policymakers, who can use this study to define a feasible environmental policy. The
purpose of this study is to explore the potential of hydrogen as a fuel in the airport GSE vehicles in
order to reduce the airport air pollution. The methodology developed for this study compares the direct
emissions and indirect emissions for both diesel and hydrogen technologies. The direct emissions are
produced by combustion fuel and the indirect emissions are related to the production of fuel. In case
of hydrogen technology, proton exchange membrane fuel cells are used to power the GSE vehicles.
The study also includes the investigation of Steam methane reforming and Electrolysis technologies
for the production of gaseous hydrogen at the airport. The various pollutants that are investigated in
this study include carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides etc. The major
inputs used in the study are a number of air transport movements, the aircraft fleet mix, the turnaround
time for handling operations and the ratio of GSE vehicles converted to hydrogen. The

Female Archetypes
One Hundred Years of Female Archetypes Throughout the years, different forms of literature have
generally stereotyped women and shown them as weaker than men. They have played archetypes such
as the mother or the lover, which have traits less desirable than the roles men would take. These
archetypes tend to limit their personalities and they become characters that are solely there for
inconveniencing the hero and creating obstacles. Throughout history many people have made efforts
to change these archetypes and make them more desirable. Even though archetypes for women have
been shown as weak, it has changed throughout the years. Literature is a main example that shows
how stereotypes and gender roles for women have been affected ... Show more content on

While archetypes are still able to exist, they are able to be more rounded characters without limitations
on their personalities. This can be seen in books such as The Hunger Games, where the main character
Katniss Everdeen is a strong female character who is able to fight and defend herself and is also able
to act motherly and care for her sister, Prim. Characters portrayed as either gender are able to keep
ideas for that gender from the past while also being capable of being more modern and more desirable.
(Brègent Heald). Although weak female characters still exist in current literature, Bella from Twlight
being a very familiar example of a weak character who constantly relies on men to save her and
becomes a motherly figure by the end, there are many other female characters in current series that

Eric Serratella Sassy Pottery
Pottery is an ancient form of art created by people as early as 29,000 BC. The Gravettian Venus

BC (Carr, 2015). Since then ceramics have significantly evolved, and the pots created today can be
described as interesting and unique masterpieces. An example of one of these masterpieces is Sassy

handle forms the other arm. It had also been cleverly created to look like a branch growing from the
body of the pot with organic curves and angles. The lid of the teapot is slightly raised by a thick neck
of the teapot, and has a branch growing from it to form a convenient handle. The base is muck thicker
than the body to give it a very sturdy and well built appearance. It also seems to be slightly hollowed

What Is American Realism
Realism: The Argument, American Literary Examples, and a Common Misconception For many
people, being able to relate to a story can be integral in whether or not they have actually enjoyed it;
though in more extreme cases, it might be the only criteria necessary for one to enjoy it. Frankly, this
is why the realism movement in nearly all media has been so successful. To best describe realism,
however, is that it s an argument in writing that tries to relate to an event or concept in real life to
illustrate the kinds of topics that would be found in literature. One part of the realism movement that is
incredibly important for the maturation of the argument, however, deals with American Literature in
the late 1800 s; the literary landscape changed after the Civil War out of analysis of the lives

Human Nature And Nature In The Ecotone By James Clifford
Human actions do not disturb the pristineness of nature but add into the pristineness by enhancing
nature. Artificial structures, such as the landfills and flood control gates aid in protection of property,
but cause destruction of certain animal habitats. However, artificial structures in the Bay Area have an
ecotonal relationship with nature. Building the floodgates sacrifice the habitat in place of the
floodgate, but in the long term, protects more habitats. In The Ecotone by James Clifford, Clifford
shows the university has a symbiotic relationship with nature. In Man, the Dominant Animal by
RatCliffe, RatCliffe introduces how human actions go through a cycle of aiding and destroying
peregrine life. Landfills help reduce the contamination of toxic chemicals with nature. Floodgates
protect buildings against nature s floods, which create millions of dollars in damage of trees and
animal habitat. In the Bay Area, cities, such as Milpitas debate if a floodgate is more beneficial or
damaging, and San Francisco debated how to remove the contamination from the rust of old war
ships. In my interview with MetCalfe, MetCalfe claims that human machines help nature dispose of
waste through the use of anaerobic digesters. Artificial structures have an ecotonal relationship with
nature because the relationship consists of a mergence between the two communities. This is
important because humans must create artificial structures in a way that will not harm nature. In the
writing, In the Ecotone by Jim Clifford, Clifford argues that the composite environment is always
being assembled and reassembled with friction and difficulty (Clifford 7). In other words, the
intersection between human made structures is a natural event of nature because nature continually
consists of rearrangement of members. Gathering from Clifford, artificial structures, such as buildings,
do not disturb nature but are a part of the natural ecotone. This view is important today because many
have a one sided, negative view of construction of buildings. In San Francisco protest that the new
skyscraper destroys the beauty of the city by blocking the sun. However, the skyscraper is part of the
developing city and creates many habitats for eagles

foster homes. He experienced abuse and neglect in these homes. He was not only physically abused

Will sees himself as a southie , a loser. To maintain congruence between his self view and his
experiences his acts out. He starts fights and stays in trouble. He doesn t seek anything better for
himself. In Rogers theory an individual strives for self actualization. Will is brilliant and has
knowledge about many topics. He reads a lot to keep himself knowledgeable. He answers difficult
math problems that are put on a board at MIT, where he works as a janitor. In trying to maintain
congruence between his self view and his experiences he does not trust anyone. When someone tries
to get close and help him he denies needing help. Will is defensive towards everyone he comes in
contact with. He experiences incongruence with his cockiness of being smarter than most but he doesn
t feel he deserves better than living as a nobody. Will s ability to push all his therapists and his
girlfriend away shows his defensiveness. He keeps this tough boy attitude to make others not want to
care about him because no one ever has. Rogers pathology includes defensive maintenance of self
(Pervin et al., 2005). Will s therapist was concerned about Will and took an active role in
understanding the experiences of the client (Pervin et al, p. 198, 2005). This therapy is called Client

The Tragedy Of The North Atlantic Cod Fisheries
The Tragedy of the North Atlantic Cod Fisheries
In the 1600s, due to the abundance of cod fish in the North Atlantic waters, commercial cod fisheries
became one of the foundations of the New England economy (Seelye Bidgood, 2013). However, as
people increasingly relied on fisheries to make lucrative profits, the cod fish population plummeted
and the whole business reached its first collapse in the mid 1990s according to the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Association (NOAA 2014). Since then, government regulations and international
agreements have gradually emerged to preserve the Atlantic cod fish population. Even though the cod
fish population did seem to rebound slightly, it could never catch up with people s monstrous appetite

It seems that a more effective non technical solution is mutual coercion to set up strong government
regulations and use technical solutions to aid mutual coercion. The Tragedy of the Commons ,
according to Hardin, is a societal problem arising from individuals depleting shared resources (1968,
pg 1243). Hardin s commons are the limited resources shared by society that are not regulated. In
commercial cod fisheries, the commons is the fishing ground, or the ocean. The tragedy of the
commons refers to a dilemma individuals, maximizing their own utility, could collectively cause the
depletion of common resources. This is because assuming that humans are self interested rational
beings, every individuals interest is to maximize their own gain by exploiting public resources, while
the collective interest is to use the resources sustainably. Likewise, in commercial cod fisheries, the
individual s interest is to catch as many fish as possible to maximize profit. Yet, the collective interest
is to fish at a level sustainable for cod fish to reproduce, so that not only our generation, but also our
future generations will not run out of cod. Since we have hardly resolved the gap between individual
interest and collective interest, the problem persists. This gap has already led to devastating
consequences. In 2015, the cod stock in the Gulf of Maine is at 18 percent of what scientists deem to
be a healthy population.

How To Write A Dialectical Journal For Wuthering Heights
Book Review: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
3 Important quotes
In vapid listlessness I leant my head against the window, and continued spelling over Catherine
Earnshaw Heathcliff Linton, till my eyes closed; but they had not rested five minutes when a glare of
white letters started from the dark, as vivid as spectres the air swarmed with Catherines; and rousing
myself to dispel the obtrusive name, I discovered my candle wick reclining on one of the antique
volumes, and perfuming the place with an odour of roasted calf skin.
This quote represents the first point of the book in which Lockwood realizes the Heights hold a secret
no one wants him to know about. It stirs up his curiosity about the past affairs at Wuthering Heights
and leads him to inquire about the story. He doesn t know why this woman s name is scratched into

her past relationship with Heathcliff, who loved her enough to ask her to haunt him.

Chinese Discrimination In Australia Essay
Imagine yourself moving to a different country which has a completely different culture to yours and
the people there who you thought would be kind and peaceful, abuse you regularly and belittle you as
much as possible. You become the target of prejudice and racist attitudes by both European and the
Australian government. These are the hardships and the forms of racism faced by the Chinese from the
Europeans upon arriving in Australia from 1800.
In 1851, gold was discovered in Australia. The Victorian gold rush attracted a great number of
immigrants all over the world. A small group of Chinese miners left Hong Kong and arrived in
Melbourne in 1852, returning to China rich in 1853. These men spread the word and gathered their

They made no attempt to become part of the local community and did not mix with the mining
population. The Chinese sent gold back to China which indicated their intention of eventually
returning home. However this also created dissatisfaction and jealousy among the European miners.
The European objections to the Chinese were both racist and economic. The Chinese were
hardworking which made them look slack. They were the target of racist attitudes of both European
gold miners and the Australian government of the time. The Chinese were regarded as an inferior race
and were often unfairly blamed for many things not of their doing. They were resented as much for
their hard work and success as their different culture. These resentments turned into unnoticeable
violence at times. The Chinese were seen initially as oddities, later as competitors and then as a danger
to white Australia.
The Europeans criticized the Chinese for a number of reasons. The Chinese muddied the water that
was needed for washing gold. They went through the left over mining rubble or tailings which
Europeans needed to fall back upon in times of hardship. Suspicion of Chinese dress, customs,
religion and their vices, both real and imagined and like the Aborigines, the Chinese were considered

Las Vegas, The Original City Of Sin Essay
Las Vegas, the original City of Sin (Bull 2). Marketing campaigns flaunt the idea what happens in
Vegas, stays in Vegas (Bull 4). Now known for its attitude of permissiveness, especially regarding
sexual behavior, Las Vegas has grown tremendously from it s humble beginnings as a simple rail stop
between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City (Bull 2). In 1911, with a population of just over 2,000, Las
Vegas was incorporated and its first mayor elected. Fast forward twenty years, and the population has
almost quadrupled and gambling is legalized. Reminiscent of a perfect storm, the setting was ripe for
exploitation: Las Vegas was distanced from other towns or cities, the railroad allowed people to easily
travel, and legalized gambling opened up avenues for debasement. With it s remote location and
legalized gambling, it was inevitable that big time mobsters would come onto the scene. Additionally,
casinos were being erected, encouraging guests to spend money and drink liquor, thus leading to
uninhibited behavior. Furthermore, by providing workers in the oldest profession there would be yet
another way to line the pockets of the underworld figures who created the foundation for the Vegas of
today. Russell W. Belk has argued, the idea that Las Vegas provides forbidden fruit and guilty

Analysis Of Margaret Edson s And T T ( Wit ) Journeys...
First performed in 1995, Margaret Edson s play, W;t (Wit) journeys into the mind of Doctor Vivian
Bearing, a scholar of Donne s Holy Sonnets and terminally ill cancer patient. In her final two hours of
life, Bearing reflects upon her attempts to reconcile the disease and her impending death along with
her life as a professor (Edson). Edson s literature introduces us to the abstract concept of pain. While
enlightening, words alone cannot sufficiently communicate the transcendental idea. Fortunately for us,
Wit was adapted into a movie several years after its debut. This format enables us to visually conceive
the physical manifestation of pain, allowing us to create a stronger connection to the work as a whole.

Meanwhile, according to Mayo Clinic, cancer includes diseases characterized by the development of
abnormal cells that divide uncontrollably (Mayo Clinic Staff). Under these two definitions, cancer
should be considered a disability. It is worth noting that previous to the ADAAA, cancer was not
always considered a disability (Befort 1020). In fact, some Supreme Court rulings narrowed the
definition of disability to exclude cancer since it is not always a lasting disability ( Befort 1020 1021).
According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the purpose of the ADAAA was
to undo the Supreme Court s decisions by extending coverage to afflictions that may be episodic like
cancer ( Fact Sheet ). Thus, Wit may not have been treated as a disability literature or cinema prior to
2008.
In relation to Wit, Bearing is disabled through both her stage IV ovarian cancer and pain. As

There are all sorts of different tools available for flossing today. You can use a waterpik, traditional
floss, or even the handheld flossers to help your child get the hang of it. As for the floss itself, you can
use any variety that your child likes: thick, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Be an Example
Just like brushing, you should aim to be an example for your child. Show your child that you floss
your teeth too. You might also want to brush and floss alongside your child. It will help make the
experience more fun for your child. Plus, you can use those precious minutes for bonding.
3. Offer Rewards
If there is one thing children like, it s rewards. During the beginning of your flossing adventure,
consider offering your child a reward for good behavior or proper technique. It doesn t have to be
candy or food, you can use toys or stickers as a reward. You can also offer extended playtime, reading,
or TV time, as a reward too.
4. Start Early and Go Slow
Finally, make sure you start instilling good flossing habits early. The younger your child starts, the
better. Starting young will also ensure that they continue the habit throughout their life. In addition,
make sure start slow. Your child may not get the hang of it immediately and that s perfectly
acceptable. Show them the ropes, practice daily, and soon they will be a master at flossing.
Flossing is a crucial part of a good oral hygiene routine. It helps to remove plaque buildup and it keeps
the gums and teeth healthy. If you are trying to introduce flossing into your child s routine, use these
four tips. Additionally, make sure they are visiting a pediatric dentist on a regular

Essay On Cultural Capital
People Like Us The Bay Area is one of the most financially exhaustive places to call home in this
nation, thus it is no surprise to say that even a comfortable living in cities such as Berkeley or San
Francisco places one relatively high on the annual income scale. The city of Berkeley, my hometown,
is an amonole: distinct from other conventionally affluent cities across the country such as Irvine.
Berkeley has always been baked with a splendor of various cultures showcased through the multitude
of ethnicities, advanced tastes in art and music, along with an unapologetic exemplification of the
sense of self whether it may be through clothing, sexual orientation, conduct, etcetera. With this and
Bourdieu s ideas on habitus the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus shaped my specific habitus; a reflection of the comfortably affluent and culturally superfluous
environment. This allowed me and my circle of friends to express our tastes and partake in activities
that we genuinely enjoyed: weekends at the SFMOMA, brunching at La Note, watching ballets at the
Opera House and so on. All of these interests, in order to truly enjoy, requires a level of cultural
capital but it also demands economic capital. But habitus shapes more than just weekend interests. We
all received good grades, which then paved way to a four year university. Our tastes in clothing were
mostly identical. Even our tastes in boys aligned. But a humorous indicator of our shared habitus is
that we are all obsessively thin. If I didn t have money or if I had spent my childhood in Oklahoma,
my tastes, looks, opinions would differ drastically. Thus habitus trains people in my social class and
those in others, to know when someone just is or isn t. And in my hometown, it s culture.
In Berkeley, cultural capital is an indicator of social class; however, modern times have created a new
symbolic struggle ... one that works in reverse. Symbolic struggle is the fight for social dominance. It
is a game reflective of the higher class opinions; the middle class attempts to join in, acknowledging
the standards set by those above them as best , while the lowest class pushes back through affirming
their own identity. Currently there is an

Jose Marti s Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca
The decision made by the personal representatives of the US and Cuba to open up trade relations was
an historic announcement. Presidents Castro and Obama showed a level of political will that is not
seen in the world very often, such as that to undertake such a transformational act. Both presidents
have overturned years of hostility of people that share the same blood but that live in a new world.
They were able to leave history in the past and have discussions based upon mutual respect. In Cuban
author, Jose Marti s Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca , he made an offering of friendship and peace to his
friend and his enemy (Macias, p. 25). This is the same offering that Barack Obama made to Raul
Castro a saludo de paz, a greeting of peace, and to burn

James Bond (90 kg), outfitted with perfectly matching skis and skiware, is at the top of a steep slope
that a secret spy like him can easily handle. He lets himself go from rest and smoothly slides down the
h = 15 m high hill. A big parking lot lies at the bottom of the hill. Since the parking area has been
cleared of snow, the friction between the ground and the skis brings our hero to a halt at point D,
located at a distance d = 12 m from point C. The descent can be considered frictionless. Take the
potential energy to be zero at the bottom of the slope. (a) What is the mechanical energy of James
Bond at points A and D? (b) Determine the speed of Bond at position B ... Show more content on

A bullet of mass 10.0 g is fired into the block and embeds in the block. The block rises a height of h =
5.00 cm. (a) Draw a figure showing the initial and final positions of the block. (b) What was the speed
of the bullet? (c) How much thermal energy is generated in the block? (d) If the bullet stops in a
distance of 4.00 cm inside the block, estimate the force of friction. SOLUTION : (b) The problem
consists of two stages. The first stage is from before to after the impact. The second stage is from just
after the impact to the final position. In the first stage, the linear momentum is conserved. In the
second stage, the energy is conserved. Let us denote the initial speed of the bullet as v0 . So: pbefore =
pafter mv0 = (m + M ) v (4) M +m v0 m M y=0 Then using the conservation of energy of the
combined mass rising to height h after the impact: 1 (M + m) v 2 = (M + m) gh 2 ⇒ v = 2gh (a)
L L y=h
(5)
Substituting v from eq. 5 into eq. 4 and solving for v0 : v0 = m+M m 2gh = 2.00 kg + 0.0100 kg
0.0100 kg 2 9.80 m/s2 (0.0500 m) = 199 m/s
(c) Assuming no sound generated in the impact, all the energy lost will turn into heat energy. The heat
energy generated is equal to the difference between the energy before the impact

The Woman Who Walked Into Doors
Paula s voice, in which the entire novel is related, combines convincing staccato storytelling, slangy
working class diction, frank revelations, and agonized reconstruction of the past in sometimes profane
and often touching tones. Here Paula remembers her teenaged self, both attracted and repelled by the
man she will so disastrously marry: He was a ride. It was the best way to describe him, from the first
time I heard of him to the last time I saw him. He wasn t,t gorgeous. There was never anything
gorgeous about him. When we made love the first time in the field when we were drunk, especially
me, and I didn t really know what was happening, only his weight and wanting to get sick@ I felt
terrible after it, scared and soggy, guilty and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paula is the woman who walked into doors [1] because she explains her cuts, bruises, and broken
bones by her clumsiness walking into doors, falling down stairs rather than their real causes, her
husband s violent physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. This euphemism shows the contradiction of
subaltern speech: it can suggest and imply but it cannot truly speak in a language that society is
willing or able to decode. In fact, the entire novel rests on the inherent contradiction of subaltern
speech because Paula, a subaltern figure, narrates the entire book. The book shows Paula as she
struggles to know and speak [herself], to borrow a phrase from Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak s Can the
Subaltern Speak? [2] In Spivak s problematic, the there is no unrepresentable subaltern subject that
and know and speak itself; however, this impossibility is a deconstructive (im)possibility,[3] neither
final nor absolute. Spivak s writings on fictional representations of subalterns, such as her preface to
Mahasweta Devi s Imaginary Maps[4] and A Literary Representation of the Subaltern, as well as Can
the Subaltern Speak? , explore the contradictions that this impossible speech produces. Doyle s novel
suggests another way to theorize this contradiction by looking at its

Comparing Which Pinter And Larkin Show The Pressures Of...
Compare and contrast the ways in which Pinter and Larkin show the pressures of modern life on the
individual
In both The Caretaker and Larkin s Collected Poems, Pinter and Larkin frequently paint their
characters to live in a relentless state of fear and anguish caused often by the pressures of the external
world. In this critical understanding of both writers, I will explore how the variations of pressures
from modern life effecting and potentially harming individuals. The Caretaker and Collected Poems
were both written in the 1960 s. The Swinging Sixties was a revolutionary time, with the introduction
to new influential music, the contraceptive pill and iconic fashion. These thriving characteristics
defined the hedonistic era we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr Bleaney deals with a similar situation of characters residing in a fixed mind set that leads to
stagnant life. The speaker discusses similar physical restrictions and issues that he and Mr Bleaney
face living in the small cramped flat. The speaker reflects Where Mr Bleaney lay, and stub my fags on
the same saucer souvenir . Both men share the same dismal habits showing negligence they have for
their futures. The concept of self induced entrapment within a safe sanctuary is brought upon both
characters, showing no real desire to expand to the exterior world. In comparison, Aston in The
Caretaker resides in a safe sanctuary of his home and loyalty of the shed concept. As a victim of
electrotherapy, Aston is scared from the dangers of society s pressures on him, so he constantly keeps
himself busy with trivial tasks to keep his mind at rest. Pinter s stage directions support Aston anxious
habits, Aston crosses to the plug box to get another plug during one of Davies excessively bogus
stories, then later goes back to the bed just to fidget with the new plug. Critic here supporting Aston s
nervous ticks and reasoning behind it
Towards the end of the Mr Bleaney, Larkin potentially acknowledges that living in fear is a life
wasted. As the poem is retrospective, the speaker proclaims, That how we live measures our own
nature , as for Mr Bleaney who lived in trepidation of existence beyond his measly flat, has wasted his
life. The speaker reflects,

  • 3. Essay On Improved As A Writer How I Have Improved as a Writer Ever since I started attending Mrs.Kigar s 1st hour Senior Comp. class, my writing skills have expanded into a new level. I learned a lot about writing for example; before this class I had never heard of parallelism and didn t know the impact it had on writing. Another part of my stylistic learning was learning about transitions, semicolons, commas, and apostrophes. I also wrote almost every different style of paper too which really helps in improving the ability to write. One thing I have improved on is using sophisticated vocabulary in my papers. For example, from my compare and contrast paper I wrote I said, The boxer engine also gives the exhaust a much better sound, which is more dulcet to the ear. (Consolla, 1) This is a prime example of sophisticated vocabulary use in my papers. Dashes have come to be very confusing for some people, but after reading ... Some people didn t like the movie we watched earlier in the semester, The Words; but I thought it was a excellent movie. I thought it was the perfect movie to write a movie review on. I really like movies and enjoy watching them and criticizing them, but I had never known the write way to do it. The movie review essay really helped to improve my writing ability. The writing ability of me, Jack Consolla, has improved quite well throughout the semester. • 4. Planning Policies On Social Life Planning policies on Social Life in Cities For year s urban policy and strategy has been dominated by thinking about the physical city: landmark architecture, transport, housing, urban development, and increasingly the technological infrastructure to create smarter, more productive, and greener cities. Clearly social issues like health, education, employment and public safety matter to city leaders but policy and public services deal with people in the abstract rather than the particular, which is why so often, plans diverge from reality in unpredictable and unintended ways. The social life of cities, in particular the ordinary, the small scale and mundane aspects of urban life, are commonly overlooked as a source of insight and inspiration for city planners and decision makers. Looking at the everyday life of city streets and neighborhoods provides a perspective on cities, social change and the radical variety of urban life, that is dramatically different to thinking about the city as an intelligent network or transport system with predefined ideas about how people will behave that is more of how the social planning do. Social planning is the process by which policymakers legislators, government agencies, planners, and, often, funders try to solve community problems or improve conditions in the community by devising and implementing policies intended to have certain results. These policies may take the form of laws, regulations, incentives, media campaigns, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Impact Of Technology On Communication In the year 2017, technology has advanced and sneaked into the lives of just about everyone. Technology can be found everywhere, at any time. The most common being cellphones. With the invention of cellphones and other devices, people have access to technology no matter what they are doing or where they may be. This brings up the question of whether or not technology is hurting the way people communicate. Journalists like Thomas Friedman, James Butler, and Steven Johnson seek to answer this question. It seems that the popular opinion is yes, that technology is impacting communication negatively. Technology is not hindering communication, but is only changing the way we communicate. Technology has improved communication in businesses, has connected people around the world, and has only replaced previous distractions such as the newspaper or radio. In the business world, people should be in touch and communicate effectively. In the past, businesses would regularly call meetings and with stand long hours of confusing discussions and debates until they finally came to an understanding or agreement. Now, thanks to technology, people in the work force can keep in touch and get their message across a lot more clear and easier. James Butler writes, Not only is it fast, but the response you receive is often more concise, saving time that could have been wasted by sitting through a marathon conference. • 6. American Indian Culture Influence Contemporary American Indian art and literature both have immense cross cultural influence. They take the old and the new to create something unique and beautiful that is distinctively American Indian; it reflects hardships and happiness, growth and inhibitions. Contemporary American Indian art has immense cross cultural influence. It consists of hints of traditional crafts, like weaving and basketry, and contemporary art trends like readymades and inflatable sculptures. In paintings, it may consist of a traditional American Indian woman languishing next to a life size balloon animal, or an Everlast punching bag covered in ornate beads (Brooks). American Indians are constantly experimenting with media and perspectives. They often merge the utilitarian artifacts of traditional culture with the political and philosophical musings of contemporary society. Throughout my readings, this is a common theme (Stool). Native American literature came into being because of the arrival of Europeans. Before they arrived there were only oral traditions. In the 19th century, Native American literature was text based and written in English, this was a result from the English taught in missionary schools that Native American children attended. • 7. Examples Of Psychoanalysis In Alien C. Psychoanalysis as a political weapon in Alien i. Male action and female inaction There are two major examples of male activeness and female passiveness in Alien: the chestburster scene and the differences between Ripley and Dallas as the protagonist. In the iconic chestburster scene the crew are seated peacefully as they prepare to return to stasis, however this peace is disturbed when Kane convulses and a chestburster bursts out of him. Only the male characters are active in this scene: Parker and Dallas initially comfort and hold Kane down, Brett holds Kane s legs down, and Ash runs from the other side (farther aways then Ripley and Lambert) to help. Ripley and Lambert initially reach out towards Kane but eventually watch in horror as the alien bursts from him. Dallas, Parker, and Brett were closer to Kane than Ripley so they have more reason for helping; and Ash is the science officer so it makes sense for him to rush towards a medical emergency. Switching one of the male characters with a female character could have expounded on the seriousness of the scene (before the arrival of the chestburster). While subtle, the difference between the actions taken by Dallas and Ripley exemplify the heterosexual differences in labor. Dallas protagonist is constantly in motion: investigating the signal, defending Ripley from the dead facehugger, and hunting the alien in the vents. Ripley s actions as protagonist are less active, especially since she follows Dallas vent plan and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If it remains illegal it forces women to work underground in unsafe conditions and without proper health and safety precautions. The Netherlands is now one of the best know examples of open, legalized prostitution because of its innovative advancements ( Legalizing Prostitution ). Under the government s new laws, safer environments are in place for prostitutes to work, and there has been a large creation of policies to promote safe sex. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before prostitution was legalized in Nevada, it was greatly profitable in many towns in the West. All other western states have shut down establishments selling sex, except for Nevada. In as early as 1937, a law was developed during weekly health checks for all prostitutes. The mandatory testing began in 1986 requiring weekly STD testing and monthly testing for HIV and syphilis. Condoms have been mandatory since 1988 for oral sex and intercourse, and laws have even gone as far as making brothel owners liable for customers who become infected with HIV after visitation ( Legalizing Prostitution ). Despite the legal status of brothels, there are copious rules owners must follow to uphold their establishments. Brothels can only exist in counties of populations less than 400,000. As a result of this law, brothels are illegal in Las Vegas (Giang). In 1979, a state law banned brothels from advertising in counties where it was an illegal act. Brothels have even gone as far as advertising large parking spaces for truck drivers who wish to stop during their commutes. Brothels have many restrictions in Nevada, but prostitutes must follow rules as well. In the majority of Nevada s counties, prostitutes must be of twenty one years or older, with the exception of Storey and Lyon counties where the age is eighteen. Prostitutes are encouraged to be workers of brothels, and soliciting outside of brothels is considered a misdemeanor. Alongside legal prostitution, illegal prostitution numbers are flourishing ( Legalizing Prostitution ). Furthermore, sex workers are considered independent contractors and do not receive unemployment, retirement, or health care benefits. In order for the women to receive any benefits from the state, they must register with the county sheriffs to receive documentation of their work. When a prostitute is ... No growth was observed on either of the plates even though S. aureus can grow in hypersaline environments and ferment mannitol. The plate should have turned yellow from acid production and exhibited growth. Perhaps the sample was dying and couldn t grow on either MSA plate or the strain possessed a mutation that took away its ability to grow on that media. The influx is primarily triggered by the scholarship program introduced by King Abdullah, which allows qualified students to attend higher education in the United States with their tuition fee, school expenses, and health insurance paid for by the government. Objectivity in Autophenonmenology and Heterophenomenology In the journal How to Study Human Consciousness Empirically, Daniel Dennett claims that people are often just wrong about what they are doing and how they are doing it. Rather than having an objective and complete understanding of our own intentions and processes, we tend to use assumptions as knowledge, alter facts to align with our beliefs, and theorize about causes and effects. As a result, studies of traditional phenomenology (referred to in this situation as autophenomenology) are often clouded by personal biases and misinterpretations. The evidence of this confabulation is very similar to a curious child it reveals itself through one repeated question: why? For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This intrinsic subjectivity is important to keep in mind when studying consciousness from a heterophenomenological perspective. The only true basis we have to determine the individual experience of another person is what they communicate to us. If this communication is inherently jumbled with misunderstandings and theories of one s qualia, the data on which heterophenomenology is based is flawed and, consequently, so is heterophenomenology itself. Rather than providing a scientific third person view of consciousness, it creates more of a collective fictional narrative that describes the average experiences of others. In analogous terms, heterophenomenology aims to create a textbook, but can only produce a pop culture magazine. This view may be debated by analyzing the validity of personal experience. The fact that an individual s view of their own internal processes is flawed could be seen as irrelevant; in the end, what truly matters to the study of consciousness is what one is experiencing. If what one believes differs from the truth, does this incongruity not reveal key factors of consciousness? Furthermore, these subjective claims can be cross referenced with scientific facts to neutralize human error. This can be seen in one of the examples above, in which an individual claims that they went to a restaurant because they were hungry because they had not eaten in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How much do you rely on your phone not just for communication but also for finding answers to questions or even keeping a schedule? Have you consulted artificial intelligence about your dating questions? We as a society have moved into this dependence on everything technology, artificial, and social media. We would much rather message or post a question about a certain topic than actually ask somebody in person. And it s not just for convenience, as we become more and more dependent on social media, texting, posting, and technology in general, we subconsciously continue to wear down our ability to communicate and trust one another on a physical level. A simple conversation with another person can go a lot further than an email or text message. But why do we forfeit the physical interaction with someone for a digital communication that simply does not have the lasting impression that a physical interaction has? As stated by Sherry Turkle, in her article Flight From Conversation. We ve become accustomed to a new way of being alone together. Bertens describes female stereotypes to come under four labels an immoral and dangerous seductress, the woman as the eternally dissatisfied shrew, the woman as cute but essentially helpless, the woman as unworldly, self sacrificing angel and so on. These labels were commonly found in both androtexts and gynotexts as feminist criticism s attention drew towards female writers by giving them more prominence and esteem, yet they were found to both reject the traditional female form and succumbed to the lure of stereotypical representations. Christina Rossetti was one who was found to come under such scrutiny with her poems Maude Clare , No, Thank You John , and In an Artist s Studio to convey differing constructions of women. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ultimately, Rossetti s descriptions of the woman are again stereotypes that do not explore the true identity of the woman, but she is a symbol of the Victorian ideal woman. Yet, it could be argued that Rossetti is using this stereotype to challenge this stereotype, and is not succumbing to the lure of using stereotypes, but in fact objecting to the superficial and without depth characters that appeared in Victorian literature and art. The denouement of not as she is, but as she fills his dream appears to strengthen this point as the woman in the painting has been denied all sense of self as she has been changed into something she has not, and is left to provide for his interpretation. Thus, Rossetti does use stereotypes within In An Artist s Studio, however she uses them to object to the Victorian ideal of a woman, and the repetitiveness in art and literature because they do not represent women for what they are, and exist for the male gaze as in this poem. Similarly, Rossetti s Maude Clare highlights the issues faced by women in the Victorian era as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Then, a chariot sweeps across a meadow, taking one unfortunate goddess, deep deep down to the frightful underworld, to be seated by the King of the Dead, Hades. Greek mythology is very interesting and can also be very interestingly weird. In the lightening thief we see the very interesting part about Greek mythology. The lightening thief uses the modern day society to tell the adventure packed story. In this essay I will give you an overview of Greek mythology, along with a summary and analysis of The Lightening Thief. Hero is the main theme of this story. We see the theme of hero throughout various parts of 2 the story. Courage, Love and sacrifice, and man vs. society all connect back to the idea of heroism. • 18. Interpersonal racism is when someone has racist ideas instilled in their mind. It is nearly impossible not to have any interpersonal racism in some form. An example would be having a new black kid at school and the fact that he is black is the first thing that comes to mind. Interpersonal racism comes largely from institutional racism. It mostly means when the government fails to provide appropriate conditions for criminal justice, employment, housing, health care, political power, and education. Institutional racism was at an all time high during the time period of Huck Finn. If you were an African American, you were either a slave, or a free person with little to no chance at success in America. Racism at the institutional level is a major contributing factor to interpersonal racism. How the government treats a certain group makes you feel like that is okay but you do not really know why. The ideas of racism have been instilled in everyone s mind forever and the government does that change anything by treating African Americans like property when Huck Finn takes place. The character of Huck Finn shows interpersonal racism throughout the novel because it was socially acceptable to be racist to African Americans because most of them were slaves at the time. What Is American Realism Realism: The Argument, American Literary Examples, and a Common Misconception For many people, being able to relate to a story can be integral in whether or not they have actually enjoyed it; though in more extreme cases, it might be the only criteria necessary for one to enjoy it. Frankly, this is why the realism movement in nearly all media has been so successful. To best describe realism, however, is that it s an argument in writing that tries to relate to an event or concept in real life to illustrate the kinds of topics that would be found in literature. • 26. Human Nature And Nature In The Ecotone By James Clifford Human actions do not disturb the pristineness of nature but add into the pristineness by enhancing nature. Artificial structures, such as the landfills and flood control gates aid in protection of property, but cause destruction of certain animal habitats. However, artificial structures in the Bay Area have an ecotonal relationship with nature. Building the floodgates sacrifice the habitat in place of the floodgate, but in the long term, protects more habitats. In The Ecotone by James Clifford, Clifford shows the university has a symbiotic relationship with nature. In Man, the Dominant Animal by RatCliffe, RatCliffe introduces how human actions go through a cycle of aiding and destroying peregrine life. Landfills help reduce the contamination of toxic chemicals with nature. Floodgates protect buildings against nature s floods, which create millions of dollars in damage of trees and animal habitat. In the Bay Area, cities, such as Milpitas debate if a floodgate is more beneficial or damaging, and San Francisco debated how to remove the contamination from the rust of old war ships. In my interview with MetCalfe, MetCalfe claims that human machines help nature dispose of waste through the use of anaerobic digesters. Artificial structures have an ecotonal relationship with nature because the relationship consists of a mergence between the two communities. This is important because humans must create artificial structures in a way that will not harm nature. In the writing, In the Ecotone by Jim Clifford, Clifford argues that the composite environment is always being assembled and reassembled with friction and difficulty (Clifford 7). In other words, the intersection between human made structures is a natural event of nature because nature continually consists of rearrangement of members. Gathering from Clifford, artificial structures, such as buildings, do not disturb nature but are a part of the natural ecotone. This view is important today because many have a one sided, negative view of construction of buildings. The Tragedy of the Commons , according to Hardin, is a societal problem arising from individuals depleting shared resources (1968, pg 1243). Hardin s commons are the limited resources shared by society that are not regulated. In commercial cod fisheries, the commons is the fishing ground, or the ocean. The tragedy of the commons refers to a dilemma individuals, maximizing their own utility, could collectively cause the depletion of common resources. This is because assuming that humans are self interested rational beings, every individuals interest is to maximize their own gain by exploiting public resources, while the collective interest is to use the resources sustainably. Likewise, in commercial cod fisheries, the individual s interest is to catch as many fish as possible to maximize profit. Yet, the collective interest is to fish at a level sustainable for cod fish to reproduce, so that not only our generation, but also our future generations will not run out of cod. Since we have hardly resolved the gap between individual interest and collective interest, the problem persists. This gap has already led to devastating consequences. Under the Dream Act, this criminal would have been rewarded with legalization. In what way does this illegal migrant deserve citizenship and legal status? Micah Issitt and Andrew Walter define immigration as the movement of persons from one nation or region to another with the purpose of seeking permanent residence. Unfortunately, illegal immigration has become more prominent in the U.S. arousing debates on what to do with the illegal migrants. The 9/11 attacks on the twin towers were caused by terrorists, who penetrated our weak borders to gain access to their planned attack. Under the Obama era, two and a half million more immigrants have crossed the border illegally than during Bush s reign in office, which shows how our border is becoming more and more vulnerable. If the borders are not secured soon, more and more migrants will come illegally and take jobs from legal Americans, also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You might also want to brush and floss alongside your child. It will help make the experience more fun for your child. Plus, you can use those precious minutes for bonding. 3. Offer Rewards If there is one thing children like, it s rewards. During the beginning of your flossing adventure, consider offering your child a reward for good behavior or proper technique. It doesn t have to be candy or food, you can use toys or stickers as a reward. You can also offer extended playtime, reading, or TV time, as a reward too. 4. Start Early and Go Slow Finally, make sure you start instilling good flossing habits early. The younger your child starts, the better. Starting young will also ensure that they continue the habit throughout their life. In addition, make sure start slow. • 41. Essay On Cultural Capital People Like Us The Bay Area is one of the most financially exhaustive places to call home in this nation, thus it is no surprise to say that even a comfortable living in cities such as Berkeley or San Francisco places one relatively high on the annual income scale. The city of Berkeley, my hometown, is an amonole: distinct from other conventionally affluent cities across the country such as Irvine. Berkeley has always been baked with a splendor of various cultures showcased through the multitude of ethnicities, advanced tastes in art and music, along with an unapologetic exemplification of the sense of self whether it may be through clothing, sexual orientation, conduct, etcetera. With this and Bourdieu s ideas on habitus the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus shaped my specific habitus; a reflection of the comfortably affluent and culturally superfluous environment. This allowed me and my circle of friends to express our tastes and partake in activities that we genuinely enjoyed: weekends at the SFMOMA, brunching at La Note, watching ballets at the Opera House and so on. All of these interests, in order to truly enjoy, requires a level of cultural capital but it also demands economic capital. But habitus shapes more than just weekend interests. We all received good grades, which then paved way to a four year university. Our tastes in clothing were mostly identical. Even our tastes in boys aligned. But a humorous indicator of our shared habitus is that we are all obsessively thin. If I didn t have money or if I had spent my childhood in Oklahoma, my tastes, looks, opinions would differ drastically. Thus habitus trains people in my social class and those in others, to know when someone just is or isn t. And in my hometown, it s culture. In Berkeley, cultural capital is an indicator of social class; however, modern times have created a new symbolic struggle ... one that works in reverse. Symbolic struggle is the fight for social dominance. It is a game reflective of the higher class opinions; the middle class attempts to join in, acknowledging the standards set by those above them as best , while the lowest class pushes back through affirming their own identity. Currently there is an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Jose Marti s Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca The decision made by the personal representatives of the US and Cuba to open up trade relations was an historic announcement. Presidents Castro and Obama showed a level of political will that is not seen in the world very often, such as that to undertake such a transformational act. Both presidents have overturned years of hostility of people that share the same blood but that live in a new world. They were able to leave history in the past and have discussions based upon mutual respect. In Cuban author, Jose Marti s Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca , he made an offering of friendship and peace to his friend and his enemy (Macias, p. 25). This is the same offering that Barack Obama made to Raul Castro a saludo de paz, a greeting of peace, and to burn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Essay on Homework #3 Solutions Physics 221 Summer 2012 HOMEWORK #3 Due Monday July 2, 2012 1 James Bond (90 kg), outfitted with perfectly matching skis and skiware, is at the top of a steep slope that a secret spy like him can easily handle. He lets himself go from rest and smoothly slides down the h = 15 m high hill. A big parking lot lies at the bottom of the hill. Since the parking area has been cleared of snow, the friction between the ground and the skis brings our hero to a halt at point D, located at a distance d = 12 m from point C. The descent can be considered frictionless. Take the potential energy to be zero at the bottom of the slope. (a) What is the mechanical energy of James Bond at points A and D? (b) Determine the speed of Bond at position B ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A bullet of mass 10.0 g is fired into the block and embeds in the block. The block rises a height of h = 5.00 cm. (a) Draw a figure showing the initial and final positions of the block. (b) What was the speed of the bullet? (c) How much thermal energy is generated in the block? (d) If the bullet stops in a distance of 4.00 cm inside the block, estimate the force of friction. SOLUTION : (b) The problem consists of two stages. The first stage is from before to after the impact. The second stage is from just after the impact to the final position. In the first stage, the linear momentum is conserved. In the second stage, the energy is conserved. Let us denote the initial speed of the bullet as v0 . So: pbefore = pafter mv0 = (m + M ) v (4) M +m v0 m M y=0 Then using the conservation of energy of the combined mass rising to height h after the impact: 1 (M + m) v 2 = (M + m) gh 2 ⇒ v = 2gh (a) L L y=h (5) Substituting v from eq. 5 into eq. 4 and solving for v0 : v0 = m+M m 2gh = 2.00 kg + 0.0100 kg 0.0100 kg 2 9.80 m/s2 (0.0500 m) = 199 m/s (c) Assuming no sound generated in the impact, all the energy lost will turn into heat energy. The heat energy generated is equal to the difference between the energy before the impact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Woman Who Walked Into Doors Paula s voice, in which the entire novel is related, combines convincing staccato storytelling, slangy working class diction, frank revelations, and agonized reconstruction of the past in sometimes profane and often touching tones. Here Paula remembers her teenaged self, both attracted and repelled by the man she will so disastrously marry: He was a ride. It was the best way to describe him, from the first time I heard of him to the last time I saw him. He wasn t,t gorgeous. There was never anything gorgeous about him. Paula is the woman who walked into doors [1] because she explains her cuts, bruises, and broken bones by her clumsiness walking into doors, falling down stairs rather than their real causes, her husband s violent physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. This euphemism shows the contradiction of subaltern speech: it can suggest and imply but it cannot truly speak in a language that society is willing or able to decode. In fact, the entire novel rests on the inherent contradiction of subaltern speech because Paula, a subaltern figure, narrates the entire book. The book shows Paula as she struggles to know and speak [herself], to borrow a phrase from Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak s Can the Subaltern Speak? [2] In Spivak s problematic, the there is no unrepresentable subaltern subject that and know and speak itself; however, this impossibility is a deconstructive (im)possibility,[3] neither final nor absolute. Spivak s writings on fictional representations of subalterns, such as her preface to Mahasweta Devi s Imaginary Maps[4] and A Literary Representation of the Subaltern, as well as Can the Subaltern Speak? , explore the contradictions that this impossible speech produces. Doyle s novel suggests another way to theorize this contradiction by looking at its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Compare and contrast the ways in which Pinter and Larkin show the pressures of modern life on the individual In both The Caretaker and Larkin s Collected Poems, Pinter and Larkin frequently paint their characters to live in a relentless state of fear and anguish caused often by the pressures of the external world. In this critical understanding of both writers, I will explore how the variations of pressures from modern life effecting and potentially harming individuals. The concept of self induced entrapment within a safe sanctuary is brought upon both characters, showing no real desire to expand to the exterior world. In comparison, Aston in The Caretaker resides in a safe sanctuary of his home and loyalty of the shed concept. As a victim of electrotherapy, Aston is scared from the dangers of society s pressures on him, so he constantly keeps himself busy with trivial tasks to keep his mind at rest.
