Symbolism In The Birthmark
From plastic surgery to botox, people try to morph their physical attributes in pursuit of achieving
their idea of perfection, but when is it enough? Nathaniel Hawthorne s short story, The Birthmark,
tells about a husband consumed by achieving the idea of perfection through his scientific knowledge
to dispose of what he believes to be a defect that resides on his nearly perfect wife s cheek a crimson
birthmark in the shape of a hand because he feels that the birthmark is the only thing that prevents her
from achieving absolute perfection. After seeing the disgust in her husband s face at the look of her
birthmark and hearing her husband s constant desire to remove the mark, the wife began to hate her
once adored birthmark and longed for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The birthmark represents Georgiana s humanity as well as an indication of her flaws to Hawthorne in
that it is human nature to be imperfect and mortal, and this defines what it means to be human.
Hawthorne symbolically refers to the birthmark as being deeply interwoven with Georgiana s
countenance to show the reader how a person s flaws are an inseparable part of their character
(Hawthorne 614). Hawthorne gives life to Georgiana s birthmark by showing how its visibility shifts
with the changing color of her face such as when she blushed it gradually became more distinct... but
if any shifting motion caused her to turn pale there was the mark again and also how it faded from her
cheek [along with] the parting breath of the now perfect woman to symbolize her mortality
(Hawthorne 614, 623). As well as showing mortality, Jeffrey Howard refers to the birthmark as being
a vital symbol in ascertaining Aylmer s motivation to remove his wife s blemish that exists as a
reaction to the birthmark which [Aylmer] perceives as a threat to his masculine dominance because of
the mark s placement on Georgiana s cheek (Howard

Types Of Data Sets
This chapter details the source of the data sets used and the data cleaning processes involved in order
to make these data palatable with the statistical processes applied. It further explains the variables in
the data set and how these were re coded to a scale between 0 1.
The two data sets for this project originate from Mid Central district health board (Mid Central DHB),
Palmerston North, New Zealand. Mid Central DHB s population is 174,340 people, and the majority
live in Palmerston North City. Around 18% of the population are aged 65 years or older. Maori make
up over 20% of Mid Central DHB s population. The data consist of 6398 records; which were

Patients considered to have had more needs further completed a Home Care assessment. Therefore,
HC was used as a step up tool from the Contact Assessment. Of the 6398 records, 2056 were CA
records and 4342 were HC records respectively.
Investigations into the aggregated 6398 $times$ 389 data set revealed that some patients had records
for both types of assessment tools. Another complexity was that some patients had completed multiple
forms, for a single assessment type, over the duration. A patient with more than one of each type of
assessment records, was treated as having duplicates. There were a total of 1550 duplicates.
Elimination of duplicate records was done by chronologically ordering all records pertaining to each
patient, for each assessment type, and then only the most recent records for each assessment type were
used. If a patient had completed both types of assessments, their records for the two most recent
assessments were combined to form HCCA or HC CAfootnote{HCCA was a combination of Home
Care and Contact Assessment}. This increased the assessments to three types from the original two.;
and also reduced the overall data set to 4842 observations and 389 variables.
The current study makes a distinction between factors/ questions that are directly related to a patient s
current condition and those that are assigned as a summary to highlight the clinically perceived

Immigration Pull Factors
The West during the 1800 was seen as a better place for a future, the American dream. People
migrated because of push and pull factors. Push factors cause people to leave home and can include
war, no freedom of religion, danger, few job or education opportunities. While pull factors draw
people to a new country because it is the opposite of what is occurring back home, what they seek.
Immigrants are often motivated by both factors. Beginning in the late 1800s, more than 30 million
Europeans came to America to escape from push factors and were attracted to the freedom America
granted and job opportunities. Push factors that caused the immigration was the poverty they had to
face, loss of land, unemployment, and persecution based on one s

Tradition And Modernity In Tsitsi Dangarembga s Nervous...
Early African Literature often puzzled the conflict between tradition and modernity. Western
knowledge was almost automatically associated with modernity while tradition concerned itself with
African cultures and/or histories, the latter often given less value, while Western knowledge was seen
as the obvious path to success and advancement in life. In Nervous Conditions, Tsitsi Dangarembga
presents this dichotomic association and exposes its toxicity through her main female characters
journeys. In the book, Tambu is plucked from her family with the opportunity of a colonial education
and she is aware from the start that these are unique possibilities that will allow her to elevate her
status. As the story progresses, the effects of Tambu s dissociation from the homestead start to present
themselves and by the end of the novel, the loss of her culture is crippling. Nyasha undergoes a similar
process growing up partly in England, away from her extended family and her culture. For Tambu, the
harmful association of progress with Western values and culture is revealed through the juxtaposition
of the description of her arrival at the mission in the beginning of her story and her arrival at the
Sacred Heart at the end of the novel, as well as her reaction to the Christian wedding imposed to her
parents by her uncle. For Nyasha, her breakdown at the end of the novel is representative of the toxic
dichotomy of modernity and tradition within African literature. The implication

dollar exchange rate moved nearly 20 percent. Empirical studies demonstrate that FX volatility can
significantly affect companies profits.
Multinational businesses face several types of FX risk, including financial, translational, transactional
and economic FX risk. We focus here on economic risk, also known as operational or competitive FX
risk. Economic risk arises, for example, when a multinational business incurs costs in one currency
and generates sales in another. Profits may decrease if the cost currency appreciates against the sales
currency.
Multinational businesses have tools to reduce economic FX risk. They may use financial instruments
to hedge unfavorable FX moves, although doing so entails explicit costs. They also may change their
operations to reduce FX risk. For instance, they may change the denomination of cash deposits,
restructure contracts, relocate plants, or change the source of capital or production materials. They
may share FX risks with related parties or pass the costs or benefits of FX changes through to
unrelated customers or suppliers. But even businesses that hedge or optimally structure their
operations to reduce FX risk may be disadvantaged if a competitor experiences a favorable FX move.
The project started with the primary objective of understanding the foreign exchange risk exposed at
Honda Siel Cars India Ltd and the secondary objective is to study the existing foreign exchange risk at

Group Essay #1 Our task is to choose two Jesuit secondary schools and to learn about their approach
to the Jesuit teachings and beliefs. The first school, Fordham Preparatory School, is located in the
United States. The second school Loyola High School is located in Canada. These schools wouldn t be
here today if it wasn t for St. Ignatius of Loyola and his creation of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in
1540. We will explain the dual purpose of Jesuit education and how both schools incorporate it, the
history and general information of both schools, how they compare to Fairfield Prep, and how both
schools show compassion. There are two purposes of a Jesuit education. These purposes are to
develop men to their full intellectual capacity so that they are evermore effective in the service of
others. These separate ideas are represented by two latin terms. The first of the terms is cura
personalis, or care for the entire person, which relates to the full development of the individual. They
want their students to reach their full potential academically. The second term is Ad majorem Dei
gloriam, which means for the greater glory of God. This relates to being effective in serving othersa .
As Saint Ignatius of Loyola realized, there is no better way of serving god than by serving our peers.
This coming from The Book of Genesis which states that all men

Robinson Voyage Thesis
For the last two weeks in class we have touched upon the topic of colonizing.we come to this topic
point by reading four different text to the virginian voyage , robinson crusoe , the white man,s burden ,
and the sacred mission of civilization . So far we have been asked to pick one of the following text of
class to concentrate on and to answer three questions that was given to us. In which i pick to the
virginian voyage by michael drayton to focus on. The questions given was 1.) how do colonizers see
themselves? , 2.) how do the colonizer see their mission in colonizing the new world? , 3.) how do
colonizers think that the colonized see them? . So i belive that this poem is most fitted to answer those
questions. The first question ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To answer this the author told readers that the colonizers believes that the land would be perfect , so
they are going to claim it. For example in the fourth stanza it states to get the peale and gold ro in
other words its saying they want to win the prizes/resources of the new land. And the next part after
this it says where nature hath in store fowle, venison, and fish and the fruitfull st soyle... Three
harvests more all greater than you wish which is saying that they belive that there s going to be more
food and good weather for harvest. Another example to show that the colonizer believed it was going
to be a perfect land was in stanza nine it s where as the lushious smell of that delicious land , above
the seas that flowers, the cleere wind throwes, your hearts to swell approaching the deare stand. to sum
that up he believes that the land will have nice weather and beautiful land fulled with flower. And with
all of this they belive once they get there its all theirs, which leads us to the third question. Third
question that was given to us was how do the colonizers think that the colonized see them? . I claimed
that the colonized are not there but the people from their old country are. I claim this because they
think no one is there at all. For example whose reading shall inflame men to seeks fame this is

The Poetry of Walt Whitman Essay
Walt Whitman is considered by many to be one of the greatest poets of the nineteenth century.
Whitman grew up in New York and was a member of a large family, having eight siblings. Only four
of these siblings lived to adulthood. His father was an alcoholic, which led to Whitman becoming
more like a father figure than a brother to his siblings. Whitman quit school at the age of eleven. He
then worked as a journalist, as a carpenter, as a teacher, and as an editor before focusing on poetry.
Whitman is most well known for his book of poems, Leaves of Grass. Whitman could not find a
publisher interested in his poems; therefore, he published them himself. Whitman rereleased this
collection of poems several times, each time with the addition of ... Show more content on

Whitman deplored slavery and was even fired from his job as an editor for his outspoken views on the
subject. Whitman saw Lincoln as someone who wanted to put an end to slavery and as someone who
would put his words into action. Whitman took a great interest in The Civil War. His brother served in
the war and Whitman volunteered as a nurse at an army hospital in Washington, D.C., where he
dressed the wounds of injured soldiers, as well as read to them, and wrote letters for them to their
families. Whitman gave lectures on President Lincoln almost up until his own death. Whitman was
greatly disturbed by the assassination of President Lincoln and wrote these poems as a tribute to him.
The most popular and the most analyzed of these poems is When Lilacs Last in the DoorYard Bloom
d. Laurie Lanzen writes, this is a poem whose rich and sacred beauty and rapture of tender religious
passion leave it unique and solitary in literature, and will make it the chosen and immortal hymn of
death forever (Lanzen, 544 ). Even though Whitman never mentions President Lincoln by name in the
poem, according to whitmanarchive.org, this poem was published in the fourth edition of Leaves of
Grass in 1867 under the heading President Lincoln s Burial Hymn (whitmanarchive.org). This has
come to be considered as one of the best poems ever written by Whitman. When Lilacs Last in the

The Current System Of Education
Imagine a world without the abilities to feed or drink, count, or speak. Imagine a world without the
knowledge of health and wellness, problem solving, or the ability to interact with one another.
Education is important to know yourself and the world around us, prepares us for what the future
holds, and teaches us the skills we need in order to survive. But what is an education without the right
methods of teaching? Without the motivation and encouragement? Without the funds to increase help
for students? I believe that the current system of education fails to prepare our children for the future.

Billions of billions of dollars. For data that is too late to use, says Canada. The test results would
unquestionably benefit students if they were at least received before that school year had started,
therefore students can determine the specific problem solving and skills they need to work on in order
to be successful that year. Regular testing, being the trusted method that defines a student s success, is
also found unreliable. Today s schools fail, the Caines explain, because they concentrate only on
memorization instead of building on the multiple and complex powers of the human brain (Boggs,
141). Stuck in the world of biased and opinionated point of views and class topics, we forget about the
world of creativity where we can expand and explore on our own thoughts, opinions, and ideas.
Schools are seeking knowledge of basic ideas, including identifying main idea or what the author is
trying to persuade in their text, while avoiding teaching meaningful lessons that will actually be useful
and benefit students.
It is up to the students to work hard on assignments and study for tests with a positive class attitude,
however the teacher s techniques applied in the classroom play a role in student s success and
improvement. ...Testing has become more frequent and more punitive, forcing teachers to teach to a
sterile and often meaningless test, suppressing the creativity of committed teachers

Precambrian Era: 4,560,000,000 B.C. 542,000,000 B.C. Major Geological Event: The Earth was
formed by gravity pulling debris into a swirling mass of rock, radioactive decay and rock impacts

Taking a Look at the Iranian Revolution
Revolution means to bring a change in something. In politics, it basically means to over throw a
government with another government system. There are many revolutions took place in history and
the Iranian revolution was one of them. Iranian revolution brought a big change in the Iranian society
by over throwing the Shah s government and establishing a new system called Islamic republic.
Iranian revolution has also a lot of impact on Islamic countries. The Iranian revolution was the one of
the most positive revolution which is ever took place in Iran.
There are many names for Iranian revolution which took place in 1979. One of the named for this
revolution was Islamic revolution of Iran. This revolution is about to over throw an old monarchy
system with a new system. Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi was the leader of Iran before the
revolution. He was also supported by the United States, but Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini replaced his
government with an Islamic republic. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was the man who started the
revolution. He has a lot of support from different Islamic organizations such as Iranian student
movements. Although, Soviet Union suddenly recognized the new Islamic republic of Iran, but they
did not supported the revolution. Soviet Union saw this as an opportunity to further advance their
communist agenda and increase its allies in Middle East. In October 1977, there were demonstrations

Effects Of Thyroid Hormones On Cortical Neuron Dendritic...
Effect of Thyroid Hormone on Cortical Neuron Dendritic Outgrowth and Cell Viability Thyroid
hormones have been known to be essential for normal neurodevelopment for over a century1. A
deficiency in thyroid hormone (TH) during gestation, often due to inadequate levels of iodine have
serious consequences for offspring including cretinism which is characterized as severe cognitive
impairment, ataxia and sensory deficits. Cretinism is the most common preventable cause of brain
damage worldwide2. Research has shown that even mildly decreased thyroid hormone during this
critical period can effect cognitive function3. TH hormones mainly mediate their effects by binding to
nuclear thyroid hormone receptors within the cytoplasm that bind to TH response elements to activate
transcription4. In some rodent studies, thyroid hormones were found to have significant influence on
the development of neuronal processes. Gestational deficiency of TH in Purkinje neurons leads to
reduced cell numbers, dendrite arborization, synaptogenesis, and axon/dendrite growth5.The critical
period in which these cells require TH in the rodent begins at E18 and proceeds through the first two
to three weeks of postnatal life5, although the literature is not consistent on this critical window. Some
of the effects of thyroid hormone on the neuronal cells include increased proliferation, migration, and
morphogenesis of axonal and dendritic processes6, however there are gaps in our mechanistic

How Did Humanism Influence Renaissance Art
Humanism is the intellectual movement of the Renaissance based on the study of the humanities,
which include grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy, and history. Humanities were very
important during the Renaissance and still are today. As the power of the Catholic Church decreased,
many people turned away from religious morality and focused on studies of the liberal arts to prepare
for life. As a result of this, humanism influenced the whole continent of Europe. Along with literature,
art was a very important part of Renaissance culture. With the expansion of humanism throughout
Europe, art became significantly influenced by this movement throughout the Renaissance. Artists
began to make paintings of human bodies and their realities and dramas. Two main developments
affected the result of artistic works. First, artists utilized the laws of perspective to organize outdoor
space and light through geometry. Second, artists portrayed their understanding of the development of
movement and human anatomy through details in the faces and bodies of figures in their paintings.
Three pieces of Renaissance art exhibit a substantial use of humanism: the Mona Lisa, School of

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci has been renowned as the best known piece of art in the world.

The Importance Of Ford s Theater In American History
The United States is a nation of many monuments, historic places, and structures that represent our
history both good and bad. One place that tends to be overlooked is Ford s Theater in Washington
D.C. It was here that one of the most horrific events in American history had happened, the
assassination of our 16th president. This is why Ford s theater is one of the most interesting places in
American history. On April 14th, 1865, Ford s theater was packed with citizens who were celebrating
the end of the Civil war. President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln were also at
the theater celebrating the victory, but the joyous celebration would end quickly. As the night went on
things had turned sour, a notorious 26 year old actor

Theme Of Rape Of The Lock
Mock epic is a narrative poem which aims at mockery and laughter by using almost all the
characteristic features of an epic but for a trivial subject. In the The Rape of the Lock there is an
invocation to Muses, intention of subject, battles, supernatural machinery, and journey on water,
underworld journey, long speeches, feasts (coffee house), Homeric similes and grand style but all for a
simple family dispute instead of a national struggle. The grand action of a low subject produces
comical laughter and makes the story more absurd. Instead of magnificent passions and great fights
between heroes in which the immortals take part, we see the theme of The Rape of the Lock as a
minor passionate quarrel assisted by the spirits of the air. The ... Show more content on

In the poem Rape of the Lock, Pope has introduced the episodes of the game of Omber which suggests
the powerful battle and the cards involve the soldiers described in great detail. There is also the battle
between lords and ladies just like the battle in epic poem. But in mock epic this battle is fought with
fans and snuff instead of with swords and spears. There are single fight between Belinda and Baron
and between Clarissa and Sir Plume. Another very important element of an epic is the active
participation of supernatural machinery like god and goddesses. In The Rape of the Lock, there are
sylphs and gnomes. These aerial spirits are small and unimportant things and are therefore, exactly in
keeping with the triviality of the theme. These aerial spirits guards the person of the heroine that is
Belinda and when there is fight between the flowers of Belinda and those of the Baron, they take part
in the fight like god and goddesses in war. Pope described the protecting sylph under Ariel. In that the
sylphs are the lampoon of epic deities. A long dangerous journey on water is a must in an epic. Here in
the poem The Rape of the Lock , Belinda takes a relaxed journey on water without any stress and
danger. She travels up the Thames in a boat to join Hampton Court to play the game of card Omber
adorning her

minority applicants was constitutional. Bakke sued the University of California for violating the Civil
Right Act of 1964. The Supreme Court of California agreed and ruled that Bakke being excluded out

Affirmative Action was utilized to protect African Americas who have been historical discriminated
against more than Caucasians because of the racial quota system that fact is irrelevant to the case
(Mcbride,2005).

Honesty In 12 Angry Men
In tough times, it is easy to forget what is right and wrong. The movie Twelve Angry Men is a very
clear demonstration on right and wrong. The film is about twelve jurors who are deciding the fate of a
young man accused of killing his father. These twelve men all vote for guilty, except for the eighth
juror, who votes innocent. It seems very clear that the suspect is guilty, and the eighth juror goes
against everyone to give the young man a fair chance. Although all other jurors try to pressure him
into voting guilty, he sticks to his gut and eventually proves the suspect innocent. In the 1957 film 12
Angry Men, the eighth juror, Mr. Davis, sticks to his core values of honesty, fair judgement, and hard
work to prove the young man accused of killing his father to be innocent.
Honesty is a very important trait to have. The eighth juror from 12 Angry Men believes that honesty is
of great importance. Not much is known about Mr. Davis, or any of the jurors at the beginning of the
movie. As the plot develops, however, the nature of each character is revealed to the audience. It is
easy to see that one of Mr. Davis personality traits is honesty. Those who are honest are the most
trustworthy, and are often the most loyal. Having complete honesty will get anyone far in life, whether
it be through a job, marriage, friendship, or really anything at all, (unless they decide to become a
lawyer.) After watching the film 12 Angry Men, it is easy to see that the eighth juror

Natural Law And Legal Positivism
The contrast between Natural Law and Legal Positivism is a necessary starting point for those who
wish to understand the relationship between law and morality, and the most varied manners in which it
influences society to this day. When it comes to analyzing which theory offers the most well rounded
idea of law, one can argue that Legal Positivism provides the best definition of what law is at its
essence. However, because Legal Positivism came to exist as a critique to what was proposed by
Natural Law theorists, it is significant that both are explored in depth as means to support such
argument.
Natural law theory is based on human nature and its predisposition to do good. The determination of
what s good and evil, however, is often drawn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, it argues that at times, it is possible that for the law to be immoral.
The biggest difference between the writings of Austin and Hart might be that the former while setting
the framework for a plausible theory, fails to elaborate on its most basic premises. Hart expanded on
legal positivism by enhancing the theory suggested by Austin and making it more credible, all while
debunking natural law theory. One example is the manner in which Austin argues that the concept of
law is subject to the command of a higher authority backed by threats. Although this is a way in which
law can be presented, it is also a simplistic definition. Hart argues that although Austin s definition of
the law might be applicable to criminal law, it fails to justify other variants of legal process such as
contracts or marriage licenses. He argues that Such laws do not impose duties or obli
gations. Instead,
they provide individuals with facilities for realizing their wishes, by conferring legal powers upon
them to create, by certain specified procedures and subject to certain (p. 27) It is difficult to associate
laws such as the ones concerning marriage to the idea of a command backed by threat. The
differentiation between laws that grant liberties when compared to those that might take them away is
something that is not taken into account by Austin or explored in depth by natural law theorists such
as Aquinas.

The Horses Of The Night By Margaret Laurence
An individual s need to renounce a decision or a course of action can often lead to an individual
forsaking themselves and choosing to live in their own fantasy, and not living in reality. In the short
story The Horses of the Night , Chris has to deal with his below average life, in his below average
house, and to do so he creates his own delusions by renouncing what his life is now. As the story
progresses, the life of Chris progressively gets worse, with no job and no college education, Chris
continued to create more delusions until finally, Chris could no longer handle it and chose a life
outside of reality, leaving his body behind. Chris chose to renounce his life in its entirety and to live in

Chris believes that his life will turn out as he sees it will and that it will all work out well in the end,
despite his average grades and below average life. An additional point in the story where Chris has not
yet escaped all of reality, but only the worst parts is when he says, we ve got these two riding horses[,]
Duchess and Firefly . This illustrates that the home life of Chris is not ideal, that Chris would rather
live in his alternate version of his own reality than the one he was born into when it comes to his home
life. Chris continues to live in reality for the most part and only escapes to his delusion during the
worst parts of his life, he continues to struggle to hold on to what s real despite the appeal of his
imaginary world.
However, after failing to get into college, Chris chooses to leave is home and seek a job elsewhere by
escaping the life he lives and deluding himself that his life will still, for the most part, turn out as he
wished, slowly losing hope and slowly losing himself from reality. A moment that depicts Chris s
failing grasp of his own reality is when Vanessa says, He... thumbed a lift with a truck to Winnipeg ,
showing that Chris was beginning to get desperate to escape his current life and chose to continue his
own deception and renounce his home life. Chris chose running away from home to a place he had

Same Sex Marriage Debate
The gay marriage debate is complex, to say the least. Bitter, emotional, and controversial are just a
few words that can be used to describe it. In 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize
same sex marriage; since then twelve states have approved gay marriage (Shapiro). Even though some
states have decided to legalize same sex marriage others are standing firm on constitutional
amendments that ban it. Deciding whether or not gay couples should be allowed to marry is drawing
passion from both sides of the issue. Everyone has an opinion, and no one seems willing to
compromise.
Is it right that heterosexual couples can marry but homosexual couples cannot? Well, it depends on the
individual answering the question. Those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They argue that civil unions are not protected under the law the way marriage is. A civil union does
not entitle spouses to benefits like Social Security after the death of a spouse; spouses are unable to
take time off from work to care for each other, and they have no say in life and death situations
(Ayres). Supporters argue that allowing heterosexual marriages protection and benefits under the law
while denying homosexual couples the same protection, because of moral opinions is discrimination.
If you ask those who are against same sex marriage how they feel about equal rights and gay marriage,
the answer would probably be similar to this Individuals are worthy of equal treatment under the law,
regardless of their race, but an individual s lifestyle choices are not (Barber). He argues that same sex
marriage has nothing to do with equal rights. Barber explains that segregation became a law to keep a
class of citizens based on race under subordination; he goes on to say that homosexuals are not being
treated as a subordinate class of people. Sullivan, however, believes that the goal of gay marriage
opponents is to make sure that gay citizens feel unequal and remain unequal, by denying them the
right to marry.
Opponents of same sex marriage are trying to stop or reverse laws that allow homosexual couples to
marry. In an attempt to do so, they have asked that federal and state legislation define marriage as a

The Religious Conversions of King Clovis I and Emperor...
Throughout history, there have been many instances of leaders converting to new religions, but none
have had an impact such as the conversion of Constantine I, nor as ground breaking as that of Clovis I.
Constantine I was born in the year 280. During his reign as emperor of the Roman Empire, the state
was falling apart. 1 He was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. He called the Council
of Nicea in 325 to resolve conflicts arising between the Arian Christians and the Athansian Christians.
2 This resulted in the canonization of Athansian Christianity, to which Constantine I converted his
empire. 3Clovis I was born in the year 466, he was the king of the Franks and ruled Gaul for 30 years.
4 It is unknown when he converted to Christianity, however he was baptised in 496. Clovis I was the
first Germanic king to convert to Christianity, and while he did not convert his entire state, his
conversion was a turning point in Frankish and European history. Behind any conversion, is a reason.
For Constantine I, it was an empire coming apart at the seams. For Clovis, it was a need to be more
palatable to a mostly Christian populous.
While Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire, Christianity became the overriding faith of Rome. 5
While Constantine I had been exposed to Christianity during childhood through his mother, Helena, he
was never a true believer. Many Christian sources write that Constantine received a revelation in 312
before the Battle of Milvian Bridge.

painting in particular portrays Christ washing Saint Peter s feet right after the Last Supper. There is a

There is also a lot of activity in this painting as well because there is Christ to the left washing the feet
surrounded by his disciples, the women in the background at the table, and the man to the right fixing
his shoe. Bertin used a lot of facial expressions for each of the people in this painting from puzzled to
humiliation. The size of this oil on panel painting is 1 ft 7.5 inches by 2 ft 4.75

Enlightenment And The French Revolution
Anarchy and poor leadership of the late 1700 s in France lead to the French Revolution. King Louis
XVI of France s reign lasted from 1774 to 1791, reflecting the ideas of monarchy and the divine right.
France s struggling economy forced the citizens to panic and increasingly urge to revolt against the
King. The citizens would not be influenced to revolt against their king without the Enlightenment. The
Enlightenment was a movement to protest against and question groups like the Catholic Church and
absolute monarchs because of their beliefs and control in society. Philosophes such as Montesquieu,
Voltaire, and Rousseau highlighted equality and the rights of man helping create the Declaration of the
Rights of Man and Citizen, ultimately leading to the ideas of change during the French Revolution.
The Enlightenment period had a vast impact on the movements of the French Revolution through
philosophes like Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Rousseau.
Charles de Montesquieu was a nobleman and a member of the parlement of Bordeaux. Montesquieu s
ideas during the Enlightenment left a great impact on the French Revolution. He protested against
absolute power and monarchy. He also believed that there should be different parts of a government.
His ideas were reflected in in the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen. The fifteenth right states,
A society in which the observance of the law is not assured, nor the separation of powers defined, has

Peaceful Civil Disobedience
Civil disobedience is a timeless practice that has been carried on from generation to generation, from
Socrates refusal to execute Leon of Salamis to today s Syrian rebels fight for freedom. In many cases
of injustice, the public will rise up to reclaim their human rights, and ever so often these fights are
nonviolent in nature and educational to all the people who engage in it. However, even in acts of
nonviolent demonstrations, both the demonstrator and the demonstrated can be hurt. So the question
arises: does peaceful disobedience positively impact a free society? Or does such disobedience only
contribute to the tension already apparent? The answer to this question, simply put, is that civil
disobedience can positively impact a free society in more ways than one. Peaceful civil disobedience
is one of the most important aspects that exemplifies a truly free society, for the ability of a group to
protest against injustice is true human freedom. Peaceful demonstrations can also encourage better and
stronger livelihood among people who are oppressed, since these actions can and will open the eyes of
oppressors, and as a result such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Human Rights Within The World
Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic Oscar Wilde. Everything good in
the world has a definitive start that sprouts from inequalities, oppression, and a need for fairness. With
this in mind, things such as human rights are dated back to violent history. Nazi Germany arguably
sparked an interest in human rights as their good triumphed through the acts of a selfless few or out of
the depths of evil . Human rights refer to the laws, acts and policies initiated in order to protect
vulnerable, oppressed people in the world and allow them to possibly thrive in this world. Although
women, sexual minorities, and racialized minorities all play a significant role in the development of

Genocide, under the article II of the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the
Crime of Genocide, alludes the concept of an eradication of a particular group of people mainly
minority groups that includes the murder, dealing bodily harm to members of that group, and forcing
the group to live under certain conditions. To begin, the First World ware demonstrates a fragile state
when violations of human rights occurred during the mass murder of Armenians in 1915 16. During
these grim times, the Ottoman empire was shrinking and their opposition to Russia failed this caused
the blame to shift to Armenians who were suspected of being pro Russia . The Armenian intellectuals
were forcibly executed, causing many to later be sent off to die in labour camps or on death marches
to concentration camps. The tragedy occurred during a time where human rights were not highly
regarded and the immense lack of these basic rights caused many to be hurt. Moreover, the one of the
most detrimental events to occur was the existence of Nazi Germany and the genocide against Jews
during World War II. An evident relationship has been illuminated by Diner who states that the
Holocaust is a part of European identity that forges a connection between the tragedy and increased
means to protect humanity. International law on these bare necessities humans have rights to indicates

  • 2. Symbolism In The Birthmark From plastic surgery to botox, people try to morph their physical attributes in pursuit of achieving their idea of perfection, but when is it enough? Nathaniel Hawthorne s short story, The Birthmark, tells about a husband consumed by achieving the idea of perfection through his scientific knowledge to dispose of what he believes to be a defect that resides on his nearly perfect wife s cheek a crimson birthmark in the shape of a hand because he feels that the birthmark is the only thing that prevents her from achieving absolute perfection. After seeing the disgust in her husband s face at the look of her birthmark and hearing her husband s constant desire to remove the mark, the wife began to hate her once adored birthmark and longed for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The birthmark represents Georgiana s humanity as well as an indication of her flaws to Hawthorne in that it is human nature to be imperfect and mortal, and this defines what it means to be human. Hawthorne symbolically refers to the birthmark as being deeply interwoven with Georgiana s countenance to show the reader how a person s flaws are an inseparable part of their character (Hawthorne 614). Hawthorne gives life to Georgiana s birthmark by showing how its visibility shifts with the changing color of her face such as when she blushed it gradually became more distinct... but if any shifting motion caused her to turn pale there was the mark again and also how it faded from her cheek [along with] the parting breath of the now perfect woman to symbolize her mortality (Hawthorne 614, 623). As well as showing mortality, Jeffrey Howard refers to the birthmark as being a vital symbol in ascertaining Aylmer s motivation to remove his wife s blemish that exists as a reaction to the birthmark which [Aylmer] perceives as a threat to his masculine dominance because of the mark s placement on Georgiana s cheek (Howard ... It further explains the variables in the data set and how these were re coded to a scale between 0 1. The two data sets for this project originate from Mid Central district health board (Mid Central DHB), Palmerston North, New Zealand. Mid Central DHB s population is 174,340 people, and the majority live in Palmerston North City. Around 18% of the population are aged 65 years or older. Maori make up over 20% of Mid Central DHB s population. The data consist of 6398 records; which were collected as part of a routine procedure in fulfilment of the interRAI assessment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patients considered to have had more needs further completed a Home Care assessment. Therefore, HC was used as a step up tool from the Contact Assessment. Of the 6398 records, 2056 were CA records and 4342 were HC records respectively. Investigations into the aggregated 6398 $times$ 389 data set revealed that some patients had records for both types of assessment tools. Another complexity was that some patients had completed multiple forms, for a single assessment type, over the duration. A patient with more than one of each type of assessment records, was treated as having duplicates. There were a total of 1550 duplicates. Elimination of duplicate records was done by chronologically ordering all records pertaining to each patient, for each assessment type, and then only the most recent records for each assessment type were used. If a patient had completed both types of assessments, their records for the two most recent assessments were combined to form HCCA or HC CAfootnote{HCCA was a combination of Home Care and Contact Assessment}. This increased the assessments to three types from the original two.; and also reduced the overall data set to 4842 observations and 389 variables. The current study makes a distinction between factors/ questions that are directly related to a patient s current condition and those that are assigned as a summary to highlight the clinically perceived ... Push factors cause people to leave home and can include war, no freedom of religion, danger, few job or education opportunities. While pull factors draw people to a new country because it is the opposite of what is occurring back home, what they seek. Immigrants are often motivated by both factors. Beginning in the late 1800s, more than 30 million Europeans came to America to escape from push factors and were attracted to the freedom America granted and job opportunities. • 5. Tradition And Modernity In Tsitsi Dangarembga s Nervous... Early African Literature often puzzled the conflict between tradition and modernity. Western knowledge was almost automatically associated with modernity while tradition concerned itself with African cultures and/or histories, the latter often given less value, while Western knowledge was seen as the obvious path to success and advancement in life. In Nervous Conditions, Tsitsi Dangarembga presents this dichotomic association and exposes its toxicity through her main female characters journeys. In the book, Tambu is plucked from her family with the opportunity of a colonial education and she is aware from the start that these are unique possibilities that will allow her to elevate her status. As the story progresses, the effects of Tambu s dissociation from the homestead start to present themselves and by the end of the novel, the loss of her culture is crippling. Nyasha undergoes a similar process growing up partly in England, away from her extended family and her culture. For Tambu, the harmful association of progress with Western values and culture is revealed through the juxtaposition of the description of her arrival at the mission in the beginning of her story and her arrival at the Sacred Heart at the end of the novel, as well as her reaction to the Christian wedding imposed to her parents by her uncle. For Nyasha, her breakdown at the end of the novel is representative of the toxic dichotomy of modernity and tradition within African literature. The implication ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Empirical studies demonstrate that FX volatility can significantly affect companies profits. Multinational businesses face several types of FX risk, including financial, translational, transactional and economic FX risk. We focus here on economic risk, also known as operational or competitive FX risk. Economic risk arises, for example, when a multinational business incurs costs in one currency and generates sales in another. Profits may decrease if the cost currency appreciates against the sales currency. Multinational businesses have tools to reduce economic FX risk. They may use financial instruments to hedge unfavorable FX moves, although doing so entails explicit costs. They also may change their operations to reduce FX risk. For instance, they may change the denomination of cash deposits, restructure contracts, relocate plants, or change the source of capital or production materials. They may share FX risks with related parties or pass the costs or benefits of FX changes through to unrelated customers or suppliers. But even businesses that hedge or optimally structure their operations to reduce FX risk may be disadvantaged if a competitor experiences a favorable FX move. The project started with the primary objective of understanding the foreign exchange risk exposed at Honda Siel Cars India Ltd and the secondary objective is to study the existing foreign exchange risk at the company ... Choosing Two Jesuit Secondary Schools Finn O Connor, Finn Mangan, Chase Reynolds, Ross Keblish, Andrew Trautz Mr.Reidy Theology 1, Section 7 16 October 2015 Group Essay #1 Our task is to choose two Jesuit secondary schools and to learn about their approach to the Jesuit teachings and beliefs. The first school, Fordham Preparatory School, is located in the United States. The second school Loyola High School is located in Canada. These schools wouldn t be here today if it wasn t for St. Ignatius of Loyola and his creation of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1540. We will explain the dual purpose of Jesuit education and how both schools incorporate it, the history and general information of both schools, how they compare to Fairfield Prep, and how both schools show compassion. There are two purposes of a Jesuit education. These purposes are to develop men to their full intellectual capacity so that they are evermore effective in the service of others. These separate ideas are represented by two latin terms. The first of the terms is cura personalis, or care for the entire person, which relates to the full development of the individual. They want their students to reach their full potential academically. The second term is Ad majorem Dei gloriam, which means for the greater glory of God. This relates to being effective in serving othersa . As Saint Ignatius of Loyola realized, there is no better way of serving god than by serving our peers. To answer this the author told readers that the colonizers believes that the land would be perfect , so they are going to claim it. And the next part after this it says where nature hath in store fowle, venison, and fish and the fruitfull st soyle... Three harvests more all greater than you wish which is saying that they belive that there s going to be more food and good weather for harvest. Another example to show that the colonizer believed it was going to be a perfect land was in stanza nine it s where as the lushious smell of that delicious land , above the seas that flowers, the cleere wind throwes, your hearts to swell approaching the deare stand. to sum that up he believes that the land will have nice weather and beautiful land fulled with flower. And with all of this they belive once they get there its all theirs, which leads us to the third question. Third question that was given to us was how do the colonizers think that the colonized see them? . I claimed that the colonized are not there but the people from their old country are. • 9. The Poetry of Walt Whitman Essay Walt Whitman is considered by many to be one of the greatest poets of the nineteenth century. Whitman grew up in New York and was a member of a large family, having eight siblings. Only four of these siblings lived to adulthood. His father was an alcoholic, which led to Whitman becoming more like a father figure than a brother to his siblings. Whitman quit school at the age of eleven. He then worked as a journalist, as a carpenter, as a teacher, and as an editor before focusing on poetry. Whitman is most well known for his book of poems, Leaves of Grass. Whitman could not find a publisher interested in his poems; therefore, he published them himself. Whitman rereleased this collection of poems several times, each time with the addition of ... Whitman saw Lincoln as someone who wanted to put an end to slavery and as someone who would put his words into action. Whitman took a great interest in The Civil War. His brother served in the war and Whitman volunteered as a nurse at an army hospital in Washington, D.C., where he dressed the wounds of injured soldiers, as well as read to them, and wrote letters for them to their families. Whitman gave lectures on President Lincoln almost up until his own death. Whitman was greatly disturbed by the assassination of President Lincoln and wrote these poems as a tribute to him. The most popular and the most analyzed of these poems is When Lilacs Last in the DoorYard Bloom d. Laurie Lanzen writes, this is a poem whose rich and sacred beauty and rapture of tender religious passion leave it unique and solitary in literature, and will make it the chosen and immortal hymn of death forever (Lanzen, 544 ). Even though Whitman never mentions President Lincoln by name in the poem, according to whitmanarchive.org, this poem was published in the fourth edition of Leaves of Grass in 1867 under the heading President Lincoln s Burial Hymn (whitmanarchive.org). Imagine a world without the knowledge of health and wellness, problem solving, or the ability to interact with one another. Effect of Thyroid Hormone on Cortical Neuron Dendritic Outgrowth and Cell Viability Thyroid hormones have been known to be essential for normal neurodevelopment for over a century1. A deficiency in thyroid hormone (TH) during gestation, often due to inadequate levels of iodine have serious consequences for offspring including cretinism which is characterized as severe cognitive impairment, ataxia and sensory deficits. Cretinism is the most common preventable cause of brain damage worldwide2. Research has shown that even mildly decreased thyroid hormone during this critical period can effect cognitive function3. TH hormones mainly mediate their effects by binding to nuclear thyroid hormone receptors within the cytoplasm that bind to TH response elements to activate transcription4. In some rodent studies, thyroid hormones were found to have significant influence on the development of neuronal processes. Gestational deficiency of TH in Purkinje neurons leads to reduced cell numbers, dendrite arborization, synaptogenesis, and axon/dendrite growth5.The critical period in which these cells require TH in the rodent begins at E18 and proceeds through the first two to three weeks of postnatal life5, although the literature is not consistent on this critical window. • 20. How Did Humanism Influence Renaissance Art Humanism is the intellectual movement of the Renaissance based on the study of the humanities, which include grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy, and history. Humanities were very important during the Renaissance and still are today. As the power of the Catholic Church decreased, many people turned away from religious morality and focused on studies of the liberal arts to prepare for life. As a result of this, humanism influenced the whole continent of Europe. Along with literature, art was a very important part of Renaissance culture. With the expansion of humanism throughout Europe, art became significantly influenced by this movement throughout the Renaissance. Artists began to make paintings of human bodies and their realities and dramas. Two main developments affected the result of artistic works. First, artists utilized the laws of perspective to organize outdoor space and light through geometry. Second, artists portrayed their understanding of the development of movement and human anatomy through details in the faces and bodies of figures in their paintings. Three pieces of Renaissance art exhibit a substantial use of humanism: the Mona Lisa, School of Athens, and The Tribute Money. The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci has been renowned as the best known piece of art in the world. Da Vinci was quite ingenuous, as he was a successful artist, scientist, inventor, and visionary. The film is about twelve jurors who are deciding the fate of a young man accused of killing his father. These twelve men all vote for guilty, except for the eighth juror, who votes innocent. It seems very clear that the suspect is guilty, and the eighth juror goes against everyone to give the young man a fair chance. Although all other jurors try to pressure him into voting guilty, he sticks to his gut and eventually proves the suspect innocent. In the 1957 film 12 Angry Men, the eighth juror, Mr. Davis, sticks to his core values of honesty, fair judgement, and hard work to prove the young man accused of killing his father to be innocent. Honesty is a very important trait to have. The eighth juror from 12 Angry Men believes that honesty is of great importance. Not much is known about Mr. Davis, or any of the jurors at the beginning of the movie. As the plot develops, however, the nature of each character is revealed to the audience. However, because Legal Positivism came to exist as a critique to what was proposed by Natural Law theorists, it is significant that both are explored in depth as means to support such argument. In fact, it argues that at times, it is possible that for the law to be immoral. The biggest difference between the writings of Austin and Hart might be that the former while setting the framework for a plausible theory, fails to elaborate on its most basic premises. Hart expanded on legal positivism by enhancing the theory suggested by Austin and making it more credible, all while debunking natural law theory. One example is the manner in which Austin argues that the concept of law is subject to the command of a higher authority backed by threats. Although this is a way in which law can be presented, it is also a simplistic definition. Hart argues that although Austin s definition of the law might be applicable to criminal law, it fails to justify other variants of legal process such as contracts or marriage licenses. He argues that Such laws do not impose duties or obli gations. Even though some states have decided to legalize same sex marriage others are standing firm on constitutional amendments that ban it. Deciding whether or not gay couples should be allowed to marry is drawing passion from both sides of the issue. Everyone has an opinion, and no one seems willing to compromise. A civil union does not entitle spouses to benefits like Social Security after the death of a spouse; spouses are unable to take time off from work to care for each other, and they have no say in life and death situations (Ayres). Supporters argue that allowing heterosexual marriages protection and benefits under the law while denying homosexual couples the same protection, because of moral opinions is discrimination. Throughout history, there have been many instances of leaders converting to new religions, but none have had an impact such as the conversion of Constantine I, nor as ground breaking as that of Clovis I. Constantine I was born in the year 280. During his reign as emperor of the Roman Empire, the state was falling apart. 1 He was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. He called the Council of Nicea in 325 to resolve conflicts arising between the Arian Christians and the Athansian Christians. 2 This resulted in the canonization of Athansian Christianity, to which Constantine I converted his empire. 3Clovis I was born in the year 466, he was the king of the Franks and ruled Gaul for 30 years. 4 It is unknown when he converted to Christianity, however he was baptised in 496. Clovis I was the first Germanic king to convert to Christianity, and while he did not convert his entire state, his conversion was a turning point in Frankish and European history. Behind any conversion, is a reason. For Constantine I, it was an empire coming apart at the seams. For Clovis, it was a need to be more palatable to a mostly Christian populous. While Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire, Christianity became the overriding faith of Rome. 5 While Constantine I had been exposed to Christianity during childhood through his mother, Helena, he was never a true believer.
