On August 18th, 2016, I had presented a historical lecture on the Abolitionist History of Allegany
County, at the Angelica Library. A number of times over the years I have given presentations and
lectures at my local library, for the sake of helping to spread ideas and information to others,
developing my skills, and other such purposes. I believe there is some use in reporting and
reflecting upon it, and that there can be some things to take away from it.
As part of my activities for during the summer break, I had figured I would give another historical
lecture at the Angelica Library. I figured that it would be a useful continuity with some of the
historical work that I have been doing. In the preceding semester I had written a paper on the
abolitionist history of Allegany County for a class in American Slavery. Following this, I had
uncovered some further information on aspects of the subject. When it came time for submissions
to the annual Phi Alpha Theta regional history conference, I had decided to write another paper on
the subject incorporating this additional information. I had presented this paper at the conference at
Ithaca College during my speaking section. From that point I had also gained some other interesting

respectively. The mixtures were then transferred to 250 mL plastic bottles and shaken in a ball
mill for 5 hours (LГіpez et al., 2014). The fluid matrix was then poured into ceramic crucibles and
cured in an oven at a temperature of 80 В°C for 12 hours. The temperature conditions was then
adjusted to 200 В°C for another 12 hours to facilitate complete polycondensation (LГіpez et al.,

Gregor s family found his attempts to talk annoying and irritating. An inability to communicate
easily is a huge blow for someone trying to retain some humanity.
One great difference between the two men is that Merrick was able to communicate if he had
something to write on, whereas Gregor was not able to communicate well at all. Merrick wrote
letters to people who he had met and notes to the doctors and staff at the hospital where he spent
most of his adult life (Treves 1). Gregor tried to communicate by pushing things around, like his
food, and separating the stuff he wanted from what he didn t, so his sister would know what to
bring him. His sister seemed to understand this system of communications as she adjusted his
food accordingly, this made it more difficult for him when she stopped picking up on his hints

The concept of liminality was first introduced in the field of anthropology by Van Gennep (1909).
He described rites of passage in which the people who are undergoing the ritual are stripped of
their social status at the beginning after which they are in a liminal period of transition until they
get back their new status at the end. After Van Gennep s work on the concept there was a long
period of silence around it until Turner (1967) drew on Van Gennep s ideas for his interpretation
of liminality. He started to apply liminality to small scale societies stating that liminal individuals
or entities are neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and
arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremony (Turner 1967, 95). According to him, there are
liminal communities within which all community members are equal. An example of such a
community is the hippies who, according to Turner, freed themselves from the ruling social
structure. He defines liminality as following: Liminality may perhaps be regarded as the Nay to
all positive structural assertions, but as in some sense the source of them all, and, more than that,
as a realm of pure possibility whence novel configurations of ideas and relations may arise (Turner
