Volunteer Training Corps Research Paper
What did meet with considerable success was the formation of local Volunteer Training Corps .
We have become very familiar with the BBC Television programme Dad s Army based on the
exploits of the Home Guard during the Second World War. What is not so well known is that
almost a quarter of a century earlier, there was a similar organisation formed during the 1914 1918
War.
These Volunteer Training Corps (VTCs) were formed all over Britain and consisted mainly of men
who were rather too old for military service and those who suffered from some trivial medical
disability. Rules were set in London by the Central Association of Volunteer Training Corps
(C.A.V.T.C.) and in late 1914 some corps were formed into county regiments. One of... Show more

Betrayal, Justice and Passivity in Roald Dahl s Lamb to...
Roald Dahl, a British novelist, offered his readers a classical short story, Lamb to the Slaughter,
with the tale of betrayal, justice, injustice and passivity. Two main characters of the story are
detective Mr. Patrick and Ms. Patrick who live in small town. Roald Dahl tries to reflect human
nature of perversity, and cruelty through the Lamb to the Slaughter . As the story progresses,
theme of love, passion, betrayal and injustice grow stronger. Author smartly shows us how an
idle wife becomes a smart criminal to take the revenge of her betrayal and successes to trick
officers. As the first paragraph is introduced, Roald Dahl develops an image of Mrs. Patrick
Maloney as an idle housewife. Description of the living room reflects... Show more content on

Thus, Author greatly described 1960s housewife as loving, passionate and energetic for her
husband. Author also surprises readers, when he introduces conflict between a couple that used
to love each other deeply. Diverting the story from love to betrayal, author develops an irony. In
the story, reader sees two examples of betrayal. Ms. Maloney, while talking with her tired
husband, finds out her husband no longer want to keep their marriage. Without giving any kind
of reason, Patrick betrays her wife with a decision of breaking marriage. Mary shocks, when her
husband, boldly, says, This is going to be bit shock of you (P. Maloney) Author creates a total
opposite picture of Patrick by describing him as a husband who used to give her wife surprises;
he is now giving her shock in the middle of her pregnancy. Mary, who was previously shown as
anxiety less (Dahl), with a slow smiling air (Dahl) and curiously tranquil (Dahl), had began to
get upset and now inculcate her eye with a bewildered look. After betrayed by her husband, she,
without any argue, she goes to the basement to look for frozen food. She decides to have leg of a
lamb as a last dinner with her husband, but she smashes the frozen leg in to Patrick s head with
killing him. Mary betrays her husband by killing him and takes revenge of her betrayal. Later,
Author confirms her as a murdered with the statement of I ve killed him (Mary) from her own lips.

How Was The North Different From The South In The 1800s
How was life in the North different from the South
Life was very different for the North and the South in the 1800s.One area was
transportation.Another area they were different was their economy. The last way they were different
was they both different in societies. The reason was the South had a wealthy class and the North had
only a middle class. Transportation played an important part in both the North and South, but the
North got the end of the straw. In section 6, it says that the North had 20,000 train tracks. It also said
in section 6,that the North had a national road that stretched for hundreds of miles. In section 7,it
says that the South s main transportation was steam boats. In section 7,it also says

A Report On Bird Feeder Division Essay
The following report for MDE bird feeder division includes the classification of costs such as
product costs, period costs, fixed costs, and variable costs. This report also includes a cost volume
profit analysis to determine contribution margin as well as the breakeven point for this company. A
budgeted model is also included to show actual activity and is compared to the flexible budget.
Budgeting process, budget variances and the recommendation to use the activity based costing
system will also be discussed. The above will allow for a quantitative analysis, which will include
areas that need improving along with recommendations for this company.
When conducting an analysis is important to classify costs. Product costs are costs that are
assigned to a product for a specific purpose. These costs are associated directly in the making of a
specific product. The bird feeder division has the following product costs: material cedar, material
plastic, factory worker labor, materials indirect, factory depreciation, factory utilities, and factory
maintenance and repairs. Period costs are all costs in the income statement other than cost of goods
sold. These costs are usually associated with the selling function of the business. The bird feeder
division has the following period costs: shipping, sales commissions, office rent, advertising,
liability insurance, office depreciation, and office salaries. After determining if costs are either
product or period costs it is important to

Hiroshima By John Hersey
Hiroshima by John Hersey was written to give insight into the lives of survivors on that horrific day
during August in 1945. Hersey informed me of the happenings surrounding the dropping of the
atomic bomb. The book both shocked and informed me with its vivid details and accuracy.
Throughout my reading of Hiroshima, I found myself continuously shocked at the extreme detail
Hersey included. The book begins at exactly fifteen minutes past eight in the morning, on August
6, 1945 , (1) with great detailing of the six main character s lives. Some were had just sat down at
her place in the plant office...at that same moment [another] was settling down cross legged to
read...on the porch of his private hospital, overhanging once of the seven deltaic rivers which
divide Hiroshima. (1) Not only am I being told about these people s day, but I am also getting a
feel for the setting and the city itself. Hersey built a picture of the time before the bomb hit in my
mind, and I could not love it more. The first instance of extreme detail where I found myself
completely affected was when Mr. Tanimoto ran across about twenty men...in exactly the... Show

Kleinsorge was back in the hospital (87) and others lost property that was either a church or a

a surprising number of the people of Hiroshima remained more or less indifferent about the ethics
of using the bomb. (89) When I read that, I was completely blown away. To have your entire city
and lives literally erased is devastating, yet a majority those victims were indifferent! I found it very
interesting that many just saw the bomb as something a part of the

Persuasive Essay On Little Boy
War World two had been going on for six years, it had started when German had invaded Poland in
1939. During the summer of 1945 War World Two would be going on across several different
continents. Japan wanted to fight until they won. The United States had warned Japan if they
surrender they wouldn t attack, but Japan refused to do so. On August 6th 1945, President Harry
Truman had launch an Atomic Bomb nickname Little Boy ; On a Japanese city called Hiroshima.
Even though Hiroshima was really never part of the war. Hiroshima had a part, the city of
Hiroshima was a major manufacturing and military center for the war. There were also 40,000
military personnel stationed there during that summer. In the early morning on August 6th 1945...

100,000 people in a split second. United States president Harry Truman though that dropping the
Atomic Bomb would have had Emperor Hirohito surrender, but he didn t. Since Emperor
Hirohito did not surrender president Truman had dropped another atomic bomb. Three days later

Feminism And Frankenstein
Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps,
starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties. Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for
better working conditions, for safety in the streets, for child care, for social welfare, for rape
crisis centres, women s refuges, reforms in the law. If someone says, Oh, I m not a feminist , I ask,
Why? What s your problem? says Dale Spender in Man Made Language. Throughout literature
history, women s writingis often unremembered and widely unrepresented. For example, it is a
misconception that the first science fictionnovelwas written by a man, Isaac Asimov. However, he

The First Camera On The World Was Invented By Alexander...
On May 8th 1840, the first camera on the world was invented by Alexander Wolcott. Since then,
people considered photography as an objective medium, which is always used to describe and
explain the reality and even considered for law enforcement. For example, pictures chalked on the
gate of suspect s house may serve as alibi. However, with current technology, people can easily
manipulate ( manipulate is underlined twice as topic specific vocabulary) pictures. (In class
writing, Oct.18.2016) People start to learn that a photograph can be carefully staged to express
certain opinions, thus we lost trust on photographyand instead begin to evaluate pictures. Court
also create different laws to check the admissibility of digital evidences. However, techniques and
strategies of editing images has gone either unexplained or mis explained because people are lack
of professional knowledge about photoshopping so that images are blindly doubted. In the rest of
this paper, I give three different examples and explanation to analyze how and why visuals were
edited.
Admit or not, photoshop is now closely connected to our daily life. Nowadays, teenagers have
become the most electronically connected generation of all time. As many Chinese may know,
social apps such as WeChat, Weibo and QQ have become the main means of communication for
teenagers. In 2015, 549 million active users are using WeChat, where images are posted and shared

Lewis Carroll s Through the Looking Glass Essay
Lewis Carroll s Through the Looking Glass
If it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn t, it ain t. That s logic, according
to Tweedledee, a character in Lewis Carroll s famous children s work Through the Looking Glass
(Complete Works 181). Of course, Lewis Carroll is most well known for that particular book, and
maybe even more so for the first Alice book, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland
. The connection
between Lewis Carroll and logic is less obvious for most people. In reality, Lewis Carroll is the
nom de guerre for the Reverend Charles L. Dodgson, a puttering, fussy, fastidious, didactic
bachelor, who was almost painfully humorless in his relations with the grown up world around ...

His hope that it might be of real service to the young, and be taken up, in High Schools and in
private families, as a valuable addition to their stock of healthful mental recreations was
reflected through his incorporation of such logic games and problems in all of his children s
books (qtd Braithwaite 174). His love of chess and card games is apparent in his Alice books;
each contains characters that are portrayed by cards or pieces in a chess game. The two books,
especially Through the Looking Glass, are rich in mathematical humor. In the latter, Alice takes
a journey into the reversed world behind the Looking Glass, allowing Dodgson to introduce not
only reversals of space, but reversals of time as well this world is abundant in left and right
symmetries. The Tweedle brothers, who are mirror images of each other, exemplify these
symmetries (Gardner, Universe 3). In addition, the White Queen s memory works both forward

lose himself or herself in what Gardener calls endless labyrinths. While sleeping, the Red King
dreams about Alice, who is also napping and dreaming about the Red King. In both of these
dreams, each dreams of the other, forming a pair of infinite regresses (3). In Sylvie

A Summary OfI Wandered Lonely As A Cloud
Lost. What a standard term. One that is often associated with a child wandering off in a grocery
store, or somebody taking the wrong turn and not arriving at the correct destination. But the trouble
is that it is hardly ever associated with anything deeper, such as the human soul. Yet the reality is,
everybody s soulis indeed a little bit lost. And if not lost, at least diverted to a path of pure
monotony that drives them to forget the importance of the little things in life. An example of this
concept is the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloudby William Wordsworth. At the beginning of the
poem, the speaker is wandering through life without purpose. He is simply living a life that he
no longer feels any form of connection towards. But then he comes across a field of dancing
daffodils and his perspective changes entirely to one of pure joy and ease with his life. Through
his application of simile, symbolism, and personification, in his work, the speaker makes his poem
far more meaningful. The use of these devices helps to shape the poem s central idea, that is when
one stops roaming aimlessly through everyday life and pays attention, they can discover the true
beauties that are present in the world and learn to appreciate them a little bit more.
One of the main figurative language elements that the speaker uses within his poem is a simile.
The title of the poem itself, as well as the first line are repeating similes. The speaker uses this
component in the lines I wandered

Hydrolysis of Macromolecules Essay
Title: Hydrolysis of macromolecules
Abstract:
This lab was designed to teach the process of hydrolysis , a chemical reaction in which water is
added to a polymer, breaking its bonds and forming smaller molecules. A hydrogen cation and a
hydroxide anion (which once formed water) break apart and attach themselves to the ends of
shorter polymers. Hydrolysis plays an important role in our lives and in the lives of every living
thing on earth. Living organisms rely on digestion (hydrolysis) to convert food energy from
polymers into monomers, which are easier for our cells to absorb. This study was conducted to
show how polysaccharides are broken down by organisms to absorb nutrients through hydrolysis.

Functionalism Paradigm
Sociologists use the three major paradigms of sociology to define social problems considering that
they are complex in nature. Functionalism focuses on the entire social system and how well it is

help to restore balance. On the contrary, Conflict Theorycorresponds to functionalismdue to the fact
that it targets the entire social system. Its only difference is conflict theory centers multiple groups
fighting to gain power, furthermore it just shows inequality. Symbolic Interactionismfocal point are

The first step is choosing a topic, that is easily done by deciding what you need the answers to.
The next step would be to conduct a literature review or study to help assist in better researching
the topic. The literature review sustains other viewpoints from writers that can be evaluated for
your research. Thirdly you are to form a hypothesis to develop your theory, it establishes the
evidence of events that creates testable predictions. Collecting data is your fourth step to carry
out, that fact is getting the information together. Two types of studies that are being used are
longitudinal studies, meaning using the same group of individuals for data from observations
over time. Focusing on a single event is referred to as cross sectional studies, more so, surveys
and field research is used to collect data too. The fifth step is to analyse the results, this step
requires understanding statistics thoroughly; so interpreting data is seriously vital in this stage.
Central tendacy are the numbers inside the group of numbers, it has three measures including, the
mean, median, and mode. Finally the last step for completion is share and publish the results, the
end result should reflect back on every step that was done. The American Sociological Association

Eating too late....Eating late is not bad, you will not gain weight in the long run if you eat
something at night. That s just another diet fad and there s no hard evidence to back it up. It s

However, your body does not just stop working when you go to bed, your heart is still pumping
blood and your organs are still doing their thing. However, if you eat a heavy meal, usually heavy
in carbs or salt, and then go to bed, you may notice waking up a little more bloated because you re
not moving around as much as you normally do throughout the day helping digestion along.
Salt carbs and water...If you re eating too much salt you may bloat due to salt s ability to hold onto
water. SOME PEOPLE, not all, notice bloating after eating too many carbs, this is because carbs
are usually the most voluminous of the foods taking up more room in your stomach and also

Theme Of Nature In Thoreau
discards the language of obedience and redemption used by the church. To Thoreau, Nature and
God are at once synonymous and interconnected: Next to us the grandest laws are continually
being executed. Next to us is not the workman we have hired, with whom we love so well to
talk, but the workman whose work we are. (175) Thoreau believes in a creator god, a living god
that makes of Nature his home. Thoreau feels Nature is a divine space: a space where man is
able to feel close to his god, a space where man is able to appreciate his god s favors and Nature is
the space where man can embrace the god within himself. Influenced by Emerson, Coleridge and
Wordsworth, among others, Thoreau thinks that nature is the source of strength, spirituality... Show

as many paces that way, but never getting on more than half a rod at a time; and then suddenly

and essential presence rather than as an accumulation of items to which man assigns significance.

Jazz Has Been A Part Of American Culture Throughout History
Jazz has been a part of American culture throughout history that is still being explored today. Jazz
has a rich history that goes back many years. Jazz has also developed into many different styles that
trace to places all around the world. There have been many jazz musicians throughout the years.
Jazz music has a very complex, but good musical tune and instrumentation to it. Jazzhad started,
when musicians came to New Orleans to play, most of the people that came to play were former
slaves of African descent. The African American people had traced their ancestry back to West
Africa, and with this knowledge they began to make a new kind of genre of music called jazz,

Note that the transition from ragtime to jazz, was one of melodic style, harmony, and
mentation, though it involved a change of approach, swing being more purely improvisatory art
(Louis 176). Much of the total development of African pitch was based upon quarter tone scales
quite beyond a half tone unit, confusion about certain tones of the diatonic scale, particularly
the third, fifth, and seventh, resulted in the creation of the blues. Specific aspects of this
evolving Negro music were represented at first by folk blues, gospel music, spirituals, and
stomps; later by boogie woogie, struts, rags, one step, and finally jazz evolved. During this
evolution one basic characteristic has always been there, a fundamental pulse of quarter notes
joined with a harmonic fabric moving in unit with half notes, whole notes, etc (World of Music
200). The first combination of musical ideas to achieve popularity among both blacks and whites
was called ragtime. In its heyday, between 1896 and 1918, ragtime overshadowed all other forms
of popular music. The music was in the style of European popular song, but with a ragged rhythm.
It was usually played on solo piano, with a left hand setting down a steady march beat
accompaniment over which the right hand played a melody that was syncopated, with stressed
notes off the most important beats of the bar (The story of Music 42). Jazz of the 20th century

British then led to the Kenya African Union, which was founded with president Jomo Kenyatta, the
Kikuyu leader, in order to fight back for Kenyan independence. On December 12th, 1963, Kenya
became an independent country ( Kenya 343). The masterminds behind this revolution were
mainly members of the Kikuyu and Mau Mau tribes ( Open War Now Waged on Mau Mau in
Kenya 5). Edmund Burke s Theory of Modern Revolution consists of four stages. The first includes

President Daniel arap Moi existed as a member of the Kalenjin tribe. The Kikuyu, Luhya, Luo,
Kalenjin, and Kamba were the five largest ethnic groups (Crisis in Kenya). President Moi
created free milk programs for children in school, liberated all political detainees, and ended
land buying companies that had been hurting small land holders. These good deeds did give
Moi popular appeal yet were not enough for him to continue to hold power. This caused Moi to
begin to reward loyalty in the country in order to hold his power, which lead to corruption of
Kenya. Many officials deemed a multiple array of Moi s projects not worthy of approval within
the government. All of this led to official corruption caused by Moi, which was half of the
reason for the rioting in Kenya (Daniel arap Moi 83). Also, there was a large amount of poverty
throughout the civilian population. This is proved as it was said that during the chaos many
looters stole goods from stores and shops. This chaos was known as the Saba Saba uprising and
took place on July 7th, 1990. In Nairobi, Kenya, chaos broke out causing many deaths and protests
against the government of Kenya and President Daniel arap Moi. President Moi stated that a multi
party system would create conflict between the ethnic groups of Kenya and threatened many who

The Mongol Empire And The Empire
I was watching my cousin play Fallout Shelter, and he said that the things that are needed for a
safe and long lasting shelter is charisma, agility, strength, and perception. These four words best
describe an innovative kingdom, and the kingdom that best fit all these words was the Mongol
Empire, the mightiest and biggest Empire in the world. Mongols were nomads from north of the
Gobi Desert. They were first ruled by Genghis Khan, which means Universal Ruler . Temuchin,
which is Genghis birth name, lived a rough early life. His father was poisoned by an enemy.
When older, he decided to unite all the Mongol clans under one empire, making him one of the
most powerful people of all time (BK Essay). The Mongol empire lasted for only 40 years, 1260
1300 A.D (Doc 1). Since then and before then, there hasn t been an empire so big, with so many
advances. Even though there were many destructions throughout the process of the making of the
Mongol Empire, they should be remembered as an innovative empire because it was the biggest
empire in the world and still managed to be prosperous, it was tolerant towards all races/religions
and people and knew how to protect it, and last, but not least, it made it s own government and its
own way of governing it.

Mongols had access to everything. Although, people believe they were destructive demons because

Justification for Assassinating Hitler at the Beginning of...
I do believe that the assassination of Hitler would have been justified at the start of World War 2
based upon the facts and what constitutes for a legal assassination under the International Law. I
feel personally that it should have been executed under the just war theory and based upon morally
correct assumptions that an assassinationof Hitler would have prevented the deaths innocent Jews.
But, legally at that time and place, under the rules of International Law, I believe it would have
been allowed and was attempted unsuccessfully, based upon the fact Hitler killed himself before
he could be found and assassinated. Not knowing the exact details and with further digging into
the facts, I found Hitler was the ultimate person calling the shots. Under the presumptions, the
leader has to have ultimate control over the military. Whether other governments knew at the
time all of the facts or not, we know now so, I feel comfortable stating my opinion. After much
research, because I never had to study Hitler, I had to ask myself several questions before
coming to an opinion, not just based on my moral beliefs but, technical ones. For instance, at the
beginning of the war did we know of the concentration camps, did we know exactly how many
Jews were being killed, was there anyone else standing behind Hitler or was he acting alone? The
facts of what we know now regarding what happened before and after the war, is enough to justify
an assassination of Hitler. The

Computer Security And Information Assurance
The academic disciplines of computer security and information assurance emerged along with
numerous professional organizations all sharing the common goals of ensuring the security and
reliability of information systems. ROT5 is a practice similar to ROT13 that applies to numeric
digits (0 to 9). ROT13 and ROT5 can be used together in the same message. ROT47 is a
derivative of ROT13 which, in addition to scrambling the basic letters, also treats numbers and
common symbols. Instead of using the sequence A Z as the alphabet, ROT47 uses a larger set of
characters from the common character encoding known as ASCII. Specifically, the 7 bit printable
characters, excluding space from decimal 33 ! through 126 ~ , 94 in total, taken in the order of the
numerical values of their ASCII codes, are rotated by 47 positions, without special consideration to
case. For example, the character A is mapped to p, while a is mapped to 2. The use of a larger
alphabet produces an obfuscation than that of ROT13; for example, a telephone number such as
+1(positive) (negative)415 (negative)839 (negative)6885 is not obvious at first sight from the
scrambled result Z`c`dgbheggd. On the other hand, because ROT47 introduces numbers and
symbols into the mix without discrimination, it is more immediately obvious that the text has been
enciphered. The Mora Brothers felt that the Constitution guaranteed basic privacy and
confidentiality, they also saw this being tossed out the window recently by

Copper Cable versus Fiber Optics
Copper Cable (Ethernet) versus fiber optics
The topic we picked to do our presentation on is fiber optics versus cable, which is better for a
company use and what are the future prospects of fiber optics and cable. We also talked about
the history of DSL, broadband, fiber optics, and dial up. There are both pros and cons with fiber
optics and copper cable. The main point for our research is which would companies choose.
During our research there was many obstacles because it was hard to say why companies would
choose fiber optics or copper cable because it varies from company to company. The start of our
research had to be choosing to talk about the history by showing where it all came from.
History:
The research method we used was the internet and it provided us with relevant, interesting
information. When we started our research we wanted to focus on the history of DSL, dial up,
Broadband, and fiber optics. Starting with dial up, it was created in 1962 by Bell with speeds
reaching 300 bits per second. dial up evolved over years into standard 56k modem in about 1996 by
Dr. Brent Townshend. Next, DSL was invented in 1988 by Bellcore, DSL was revolutionary
because it proved that data and phone could be sent at the same time using the same line. The
next is Broadband it was created in 1996 by Roger Communications. Broadband is currently the
most widely used way to transport data. It was used in 70% of homes in the US. Last we talked

The Needs of Canada’s Aboriginal People and Youthful...
Did you know that in 2006, the number of aboriginal people in Canada surpassed one million? This
means that the aboriginals represented 3.8% of the total population in Canada. Even though this
number is much smaller than the non aboriginal population, they have an impact on Canada, in the
north and south. Unfortunately, some of the aboriginal groups do not have a stable way of living
and the Canadian government is very selective when helping them. Overall, I want to be able to

I believe that the aboriginal people need better health care and housing. According to Health Canada
First Nation people and Inuit people are more at risk to receive HIV. In a trend over the past few
years, it has been seen that natives are being infected at a significantly younger age than non
aboriginal people. This could be because the aboriginal people are treated differently in Canada
so that they don t receive the same health coverage that the rest of the Canadians do. It is
unfortunate that the highest cause of HIV transition between aboriginal people is injection
drugs. The Canadian government should be enforcing the same drug laws that we have in other
parts of Canada on the reserves. It is known that Aboriginal people have adjusted some of the
laws on their reserves to accompany their customs and culture. Yet, the HIV count is rising in the
aboriginal people, and if not properly taken care of, people may be more prone to different
diseases. Also, some health care benefits that we receive are not translated to the aboriginal
population. In the aboriginal regions, people live in a large home and hold many relatives and a
few different families. With more young people, there will eventually be inadequate room for
living. The government should use this opportunity to build houses and give the jobs to

The Homelessness Problem Of Homelessness
Homelessness has been an sociological issue for a very long time now. It seems to be a rising
issue all over the country. Here in the Portland, Oregon area, we are very lucky. This is a
wonderful place to live. Socially, we accept everyone no matter what you look like or believe in.
Our mantra is Keep Portland Weird. Honestly, from a sociological standpoint, there are not that
many issues, however there is one that is growing and is becoming a major problem. In Portland,
we have a major homelessnessproblem. On top of the homeless issues there is a growing
indifference towards the homeless issue from the rest of the population. People just do not
seem to care about the homeless here in Portland. We see them so much it is almost like we are
used to them and we do not think about it. We just walk right by, indifferent. Some are annoyed
by the homeless here, most seem to act like they are invisible. The homeless are people too, they
should be treated with dignity. In the past year or so, around 2 million people were left
homeless and this is sure to continue to rise over the next few years. No one really knows why
this is the way it is. Some factors that could cause homelessness are losing a job, not being able
to find a job, low wages, too many bills, various disabilities, and lack of affordable housing and
help. The term homelessness means people who do not have a home. The issue needs to be looked
at in many different angles. Homelessness can be looked at through the eyes

Understanding Organizational Performance
1.0 Introduction
The focus of this paper will be on investigating an organization, their performance management
system and our recommendations for the future. Historically performance management is defined
as evaluation a firm through metrics such as return on investment and economic value added. Our
analysis will cover not only the financial performance of our chosen firm, but also their values in
behaviors as well as their objectives. Thus, we will ascertain if the current system of performance
management held by the firm is aligned with their objectives and appropriate for their situation.
1.1 Why is strategic performance management important?

Tesco Leadership Framework is directed at three key themes to guide behavior in all employees.
These behaviors link to nine critical success factors. The critical success factors can be segmented
in several levels of assessment. This aids management in selecting the staff with the capacity to
become high performing contributors to organisations.
As part of the long term strategy of the corporation, discovering future leaders is of the utmost
importance. TESCO states that they will select leaders wherever they can be found in the
organization for advancement. Promotions are a regular occurrence as over 2,900 managers were
promoted internally in the United Kingdom and literally thousands more in international locations.
The Options programme is a more infrequently used as only 1 in 30 employees are enrolled while
basic training and development happens about every 1 in 10 members of TESCO.
Before beginning their development plan, each member of the TESCO staff selects gaps in their
skills and competencies. The Personal Development Plan has a section where they can select this
information for their line managers to check on in the future.
2.4 What is strategic performance management? Who says so?
The balanced scorecard is the most widely used standard for performance management. As

My Decision To Lead Alameda High School s Ski Club
I had wanted to lead Alameda High School s Ski Club as soon as I became a member in
freshmen year. I experienced my first high school ski trip then. During this trip, I met new
students from all grade levels and formed close bonds with them. While I had an amazing time
skiing with peers at the same advanced level as myself, I noticed that the club seem to cater to a
certain group of people. Something just didn t feel quite right.
I was delegated the position of President of the club in the beginning of sophomore year. By this
time, all the upperclassmen had graduated. A club of nineteen, was now a club of three. In addition,
the teacher who facilitated the club for three years, and appointed me the position, left our school.
To further add to the situation, the newly chosen Vice President left the club unexpectedly. Now,
there were only two people left in the club. I had a lot of hard work ahead but thought of it as an
opportunity to grow this club in new ways. I wanted to encourage students with no experience to

Benefits And Benefits Of Parental Leave
Our society is changing each and every day, new technology advancements, new medical practices,
and new industrial technology advancements, just to name a few. With this being said, shouldn t
the benefits be changing along with this? You have medical leave, maternity leave and in rare
occasions, paternity leave. Why shouldn t parents be able to take off time together to bond with
their newborns or new family members in such a case as adoption? So I took some time to study
about parental leave, this is when I came across some very interesting information. When looking
at the statistics, the benefits really out weigh the disadvantages. Parental leave policies with a
required minimum of twelve weeks paid leave to use at the parents will within the first four years

States and in Sweden. I will discuss the benefits and costs of having parental leave policies
which include: government involvement, effects of the temporary workforce, and the
requirements of parental leave. To do justice for this research I have limited my parental leave to
focus on adoptive and biological family members only. I acknowledge other forms of parental

Statement of the Problem
The current policies in education call for the provision of related services such as occupational
therapy (OT) in natural settings (Chandler Clark, 2013)(Individuals with Disabilities and Education
Act, 2004). As a result, service delivery models in public schools have shifted from pullout
interventions to providing services in a child s natural environment (Case Smith Holland, 2009;
Hong, 2014; Nochajski, 2002; Villeneuve Hutchinson, 2012). The sensory diet intervention is in
accord with the current educational policies and trends as the intervention is provided in a child s
natural settings. In addition, this intervention intends to improve the child s participation in school
activities by improving the child s ability to process and organize sensory stimuli and his/her
sensory arousal. Nearly twenty six percent occupational therapists work in school settings
(American Occupational Therapy Association, 2015) and ninety percent of them use interventions
based on the sensory integration (SI) theory to manage the manifestations of SPD in school settings
(Ahn et al., 2004). Although the sensory diet intervention is widely used in school based settings to
manage manifestations of sensory processing issues, very few studies have

Persuasive Speech About Secondhand Smoke
Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and
about 70 that can cause cancer (Smoking Tobacco Use). Secondhand smoke can be especially
harmful to your children s health because their lungs are still developing and introducing such
toxins to their lungs can cause serious damage. This PSA, created by the National Health
Service, is hoping to reach parents who are smokers and eliminate the harm caused to children
by the effects of secondhand smoke. The use of pathos is exemplified in this PSA because there
is an emotional message around harming children. Not only harmfulness to children is being
showcased but also the harmer is identified as a caregiver to the child. Logos is displayed in the
text and statistics provide to support the message. This PSA uses a mixture of pathos and logos
to convey a powerful message that secondhand smoke is harmful to your child. Identifying the
correct specific audience for your PSA is crucial in producing the most influential message. The
specific audience for this PSA are parents, or those who care for children, who smoke around
their children. The PSA reached the target audience perfectly by making the smoke made arm
and hand most likely directed at parents and/or care givers of children. After many smokers see
this announcement they will be less likely to smoke around children, potently leading to a
decline secondhand smoke pollution to children. Images in PSAs are often the first to catch the
viewer s eye, therefore, they play a huge role in the impact the PSA has on the reader. In this
PSA you see an arm formed from smoke choking a young boy. Making the arm from smoke was
used to not only catch the reader s eye, but helped to portray the message with imagery. The
hand starts as a faint smoke and grows into a solid grey to show how the smoke is not seen but
still power. The child is obviously looking up at someone who is taller than he is. In most cases,
parents are taller than their children. It is likely that he is looking up at one of his parents or
someone who cares for him. The child also seems to be calm, likely because secondhand smoke is
an invisible hazard . One of the underlying meanings of the picture is that

Abstract There is a growing need for treatment of gangliosidoses, or the increase in lipid storage
in cells. Diseases such as Tay Sach s, Sandhoff disease, Alzheimer s and HIV are at the forefront

What Are the Root Causes of Gangliosidosis? Gangliosidosis is defined as monosialic gangliosides
found in the outer edge of plasma membranes and intracellular membranes. Gangliosides are
involved in the development, differentiation, and function of the nervous system (Ohmi et al,
2011). The lack of gangliosides can result in defects in nervous tissues and neurodegeneration.
The two major types of gangliosides are GM1 and GM2. These are the focus in the studies
presented. According to B. Bisel, B. S. Pavone, and M. Calamai, (2014) GM1 in membrane raft
domains has been shown to influence the functions of lipid raft associated proteins. (p. 88) GM1
gangliosides also aid in the formation of cell cell junctions which help with cell adhesion,
migration, and the invasion of cancers cells in metastasis. Accumulation of gangliosides can be
detrimental to lysosomal storage and can be caused by defects in the catabolic pathway.
Overabundances of GM1 gangliosides are predominantly associated with Alzheimer s disease,
whereas depletion is associated with Parkinson s disease and Huntington s disease. Hydrolysis of
GM2 ganglioside is catalyzed in lysosomes by ОІ hexosaminidase A (HEXA) and a non enzymic
factor, GM2 activator (GM2A), is essentially required in the catabolic reaction in vivo.

The Romanov Dynasty That Ruled Russia From 1613
The Romanov Dynasty that ruled Russia from 1613 until 1918 was subject to the period seismic
shifts of increasing connection, modernization, and technological advancement that shook the rest
of Europe during the same timeframe. The Tsars of this dynasty faced this challenge directly
through foreign military conquests and economic and political reformation, yet a distinctive
foundational element stayed true throughout their reign. Tsars of Russiaconsistently used a
reverence for Orthodoxy to establish a continued persecution of minority religious groups within
their control. The Jewsbore the brunt of this persecution as they experienced strict laws governing
their rights and constant threats of violence. Tsars throughout the Romanov history acted to
strengthen their Orthodoxy by punishing the Jewish population in order to drum up support for
their own regimes and domestic and foreign policies. The status of Jews in Eastern Europe was
never a pleasant or hospitable one. Jews lived lives banned from certain parts of the area and
within ghettos within cities. There was truly a fear of Judaism, especially that of a fake tradition of
blood libel. This fear falsely declared that Jews killed Christians to use their blood in ritualistic
traditions. These fears lead to many mass killing of Jews and their expulsion from major towns in
1526 (Miller 93). Many Christians justified their discrimination of Jews based on the Gospel
blaming the Jews for the death of Jesus Christ.

Four Components Of Baddeley s Working Memory Model
People rely on incoming information and stored information to perform their everyday functions.
However, humans have a natural capacity of how much information they can attain. We are unable
to store all of our acquired information without different systems that organize our information.
Working memory is one of these systems that temporarily holds and manages information for
cognitive processing (119). Baddeley s working memorymodel is made up of four components that
allow for temporary information to be stored (109). The central executive directs the flow of
information. It functions more with delegating the way resources are used in cognitive tasks. The
central executive also coordinates information from the person s current environment with retrieval
of their prior information (119). The phonological loop is used to carry out rehearsed maintained
verbal material. It plays an important role in the acquisition of vocabulary, learning how to read,
and comprehending language. The visuospatial sketchpad maintains material through visualization.
The visuospatial sketchpad creates and manages our mental images. The episodic buffer is a
temporary system that connects information from long term memoryto working memory. Mnemonic
devices are techniques people can use to help improve their ability to remember something. There

Kinky Boots Analysis
Kinky Boots: Still Stunningly Flashy
Kinky Boots is a stunningly flashy Broadway musical that tugs on the heartstrings with its
equally stunning clichГ©s. With its plot originally conceived as a British film in 2005, the
stage production was not produced until 2012 and was based on the book written by Harvey
Fierstein. Furthermore, the show did not find its way to Broadway until 2013. When it debuted,
the show opened to critical acclaim with Billy Porter and Stark Sands originating the roles of
lead characters Lola and Charlie. Since its Broadway debut, Kinky Boots has been a smashing
commercial success. Over the years, Kinky Boots has swapped out the actors in its cast many
times. However, the original leading actors of the show, Billy Porter and Stark Sands, have
returned once again to play Lola and Charlie in 2017.
Kinky Boots, directed by Jerry Mitchell with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, follows the story
of Charlie Price when he inherits his family s shoe factory from his father. The factory has fallen
on hard times with sales reaching depressing lows and the factory bleeding cash flow. All seems
lost until Charlie has a fateful meeting with drag performer Lola, who inspires Charlie to reinvent
the factory and produce a new line of high heeled boots in an unlikely partnership. Tensions mount
and personalities clash as their production deadline nears, but in the end the partners realize that
they have more in common than meets the eye.

How Does Marxism Affect The Great Gatsby
The novel makes the point of getting across both of the ideas about 1920s America; Fitzgerald
creates a prolepsis throughout about the tragic consequences that will take place towards the end
of the book, as well as using the chaos of the occurring events to portray the freedom and
restrictions that certain characters have. The author uses varying methods to get these ideas
across, including colour, metaphors of sailing, the valley of ashes, Gatsby s parties and
¬¬cars. A lot depends on the perception of the reader, to how the descriptions and metaphors
can be viewed. For example, a feminist reader might say that the women are trapped in their
stereotypes of a 1920s flapper, whilst someone else might say that they choose to play that role,...

We can see this, for example, in the scene at one of Gatsby s parties. There is a theme appearing
throughout, which suggests that what we see is not the reality, but only a stage play. Nick and
Jordan approach Gatsby s library, where they see a man nicknamed Owl eyes . He is described
as somewhat drunk and therefore, as a reader, we assume at first, that what he says is close to
nonsense. However, Fitzgerald, in this way, might be allowing the reader to accept or decline
the truth of what Owl Eyes is saying. Absolutely real have pages and everything. I thought they d
be a nice durable cardboard. Matter of fact, they re absolutely real. Owl Eyes seems surprised by
this fact. He seems to be overlooking the whole scene set in the book, viewing it as truly a well
made stage play. In his opinion, the books were supposed to be hollow. In a way, the books talked
about are still hollow to the reader, as they have no true meaning in the novel than to show us there
are differing levels of reality occurring at once. In the poem by T.S Elliot, Shape without form,
shade without colour, paralyzed force, gesture without motion These are all things which are
missing something to make them real. The hollow men in the poem are just like the books (and
other items) at Gatsby s house they re missing something to make them

  • 2. Volunteer Training Corps Research Paper What did meet with considerable success was the formation of local Volunteer Training Corps . We have become very familiar with the BBC Television programme Dad s Army based on the exploits of the Home Guard during the Second World War. What is not so well known is that almost a quarter of a century earlier, there was a similar organisation formed during the 1914 1918 War. These Volunteer Training Corps (VTCs) were formed all over Britain and consisted mainly of men who were rather too old for military service and those who suffered from some trivial medical disability. Rules were set in London by the Central Association of Volunteer Training Corps (C.A.V.T.C.) and in late 1914 some corps were formed into county regiments. One of... • 3. Betrayal, Justice and Passivity in Roald Dahl s Lamb to... Roald Dahl, a British novelist, offered his readers a classical short story, Lamb to the Slaughter, with the tale of betrayal, justice, injustice and passivity. Two main characters of the story are detective Mr. Patrick and Ms. Patrick who live in small town. Roald Dahl tries to reflect human nature of perversity, and cruelty through the Lamb to the Slaughter . As the story progresses, theme of love, passion, betrayal and injustice grow stronger. Author smartly shows us how an idle wife becomes a smart criminal to take the revenge of her betrayal and successes to trick officers. As the first paragraph is introduced, Roald Dahl develops an image of Mrs. Patrick Maloney as an idle housewife. Description of the living room reflects... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, Author greatly described 1960s housewife as loving, passionate and energetic for her husband. Author also surprises readers, when he introduces conflict between a couple that used to love each other deeply. Diverting the story from love to betrayal, author develops an irony. In the story, reader sees two examples of betrayal. Ms. Maloney, while talking with her tired husband, finds out her husband no longer want to keep their marriage. Without giving any kind of reason, Patrick betrays her wife with a decision of breaking marriage. Mary shocks, when her husband, boldly, says, This is going to be bit shock of you (P. Maloney) Author creates a total opposite picture of Patrick by describing him as a husband who used to give her wife surprises; he is now giving her shock in the middle of her pregnancy. Mary, who was previously shown as anxiety less (Dahl), with a slow smiling air (Dahl) and curiously tranquil (Dahl), had began to get upset and now inculcate her eye with a bewildered look. After betrayed by her husband, she, without any argue, she goes to the basement to look for frozen food. She decides to have leg of a lamb as a last dinner with her husband, but she smashes the frozen leg in to Patrick s head with killing him. Mary betrays her husband by killing him and takes revenge of her betrayal. Later, Author confirms her as a murdered with the statement of I ve killed him (Mary) from her own lips. Hersey informed me of the happenings surrounding the dropping of the atomic bomb. The book both shocked and informed me with its vivid details and accuracy. Throughout my reading of Hiroshima, I found myself continuously shocked at the extreme detail Hersey included. The book begins at exactly fifteen minutes past eight in the morning, on August 6, 1945 , (1) with great detailing of the six main character s lives. • 14. A Summary OfI Wandered Lonely As A Cloud Lost. What a standard term. One that is often associated with a child wandering off in a grocery store, or somebody taking the wrong turn and not arriving at the correct destination. But the trouble is that it is hardly ever associated with anything deeper, such as the human soul. Yet the reality is, everybody s soulis indeed a little bit lost. And if not lost, at least diverted to a path of pure monotony that drives them to forget the importance of the little things in life. An example of this concept is the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloudby William Wordsworth. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker is wandering through life without purpose. He is simply living a life that he no longer feels any form of connection towards. But then he comes across a field of dancing daffodils and his perspective changes entirely to one of pure joy and ease with his life. Through his application of simile, symbolism, and personification, in his work, the speaker makes his poem far more meaningful. The use of these devices helps to shape the poem s central idea, that is when one stops roaming aimlessly through everyday life and pays attention, they can discover the true beauties that are present in the world and learn to appreciate them a little bit more. One of the main figurative language elements that the speaker uses within his poem is a simile. The title of the poem itself, as well as the first line are repeating similes. Hydrolysis of Macromolecules Essay Title: Hydrolysis of macromolecules Abstract: This lab was designed to teach the process of hydrolysis , a chemical reaction in which water is added to a polymer, breaking its bonds and forming smaller molecules. A hydrogen cation and a hydroxide anion (which once formed water) break apart and attach themselves to the ends of shorter polymers. Hydrolysis plays an important role in our lives and in the lives of every living thing on earth. Living organisms rely on digestion (hydrolysis) to convert food energy from polymers into monomers, which are easier for our cells to absorb. Note that the transition from ragtime to jazz, was one of melodic style, harmony, and mentation, though it involved a change of approach, swing being more purely improvisatory art (Louis 176). Much of the total development of African pitch was based upon quarter tone scales quite beyond a half tone unit, confusion about certain tones of the diatonic scale, particularly the third, fifth, and seventh, resulted in the creation of the blues. Specific aspects of this evolving Negro music were represented at first by folk blues, gospel music, spirituals, and stomps; later by boogie woogie, struts, rags, one step, and finally jazz evolved. ROT5 is a practice similar to ROT13 that applies to numeric digits (0 to 9). ROT13 and ROT5 can be used together in the same message. ROT47 is a derivative of ROT13 which, in addition to scrambling the basic letters, also treats numbers and common symbols. Instead of using the sequence A Z as the alphabet, ROT47 uses a larger set of characters from the common character encoding known as ASCII. Specifically, the 7 bit printable characters, excluding space from decimal 33 ! through 126 ~ , 94 in total, taken in the order of the numerical values of their ASCII codes, are rotated by 47 positions, without special consideration to case. For example, the character A is mapped to p, while a is mapped to 2. On top of the homeless issues there is a growing indifference towards the homeless issue from the rest of the population. People just do not seem to care about the homeless here in Portland. We see them so much it is almost like we are used to them and we do not think about it. We just walk right by, indifferent. Some are annoyed by the homeless here, most seem to act like they are invisible. The homeless are people too, they should be treated with dignity. In the past year or so, around 2 million people were left homeless and this is sure to continue to rise over the next few years. No one really knows why this is the way it is. Some factors that could cause homelessness are losing a job, not being able to find a job, low wages, too many bills, various disabilities, and lack of affordable housing and help. The term homelessness means people who do not have a home. The issue needs to be looked at in many different angles. Homelessness can be looked at through the eyes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I experienced my first high school ski trip then. During this trip, I met new students from all grade levels and formed close bonds with them. While I had an amazing time skiing with peers at the same advanced level as myself, I noticed that the club seem to cater to a certain group of people. Something just didn t feel quite right. I was delegated the position of President of the club in the beginning of sophomore year. By this time, all the upperclassmen had graduated. A club of nineteen, was now a club of three. In addition, the teacher who facilitated the club for three years, and appointed me the position, left our school. To further add to the situation, the newly chosen Vice President left the club unexpectedly. Now, there were only two people left in the club. • 29. Benefits And Benefits Of Parental Leave Our society is changing each and every day, new technology advancements, new medical practices, and new industrial technology advancements, just to name a few. With this being said, shouldn t the benefits be changing along with this? You have medical leave, maternity leave and in rare occasions, paternity leave. Why shouldn t parents be able to take off time together to bond with their newborns or new family members in such a case as adoption? So I took some time to study about parental leave, this is when I came across some very interesting information. When looking at the statistics, the benefits really out weigh the disadvantages. Parental leave policies with a required minimum of twelve weeks paid leave to use at the parents will within the first four years of the child s life should be offered in United States, like in Sweden, because children and parents will both benefit from this. A person will have to make observations of the current parental leave policies in the United States and in Sweden. I will discuss the benefits and costs of having parental leave policies which include: government involvement, effects of the temporary workforce, and the requirements of parental leave. To do justice for this research I have limited my parental leave to focus on adoptive and biological family members only. I acknowledge other forms of parental leave, but I will remain focused on adoptive and biological leave. Finally, I will propose possible solutions to parental ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Secondhand smoke can be especially harmful to your children s health because their lungs are still developing and introducing such toxins to their lungs can cause serious damage. This PSA, created by the National Health Service, is hoping to reach parents who are smokers and eliminate the harm caused to children by the effects of secondhand smoke. The use of pathos is exemplified in this PSA because there is an emotional message around harming children. Not only harmfulness to children is being showcased but also the harmer is identified as a caregiver to the child. Logos is displayed in the text and statistics provide to support the message. This PSA uses a mixture of pathos and logos to convey a powerful message that secondhand smoke is harmful to your child. Identifying the correct specific audience for your PSA is crucial in producing the most influential message. The specific audience for this PSA are parents, or those who care for children, who smoke around their children. The PSA reached the target audience perfectly by making the smoke made arm and hand most likely directed at parents and/or care givers of children. After many smokers see this announcement they will be less likely to smoke around children, potently leading to a decline secondhand smoke pollution to children. Images in PSAs are often the first to catch the viewer s eye, therefore, they play a huge role in the impact the PSA has on the reader. In this PSA you see an arm formed from smoke choking a young boy. Making the arm from smoke was used to not only catch the reader s eye, but helped to portray the message with imagery. The hand starts as a faint smoke and grows into a solid grey to show how the smoke is not seen but still power. The child is obviously looking up at someone who is taller than he is. In most cases, parents are taller than their children. It is likely that he is looking up at one of his parents or someone who cares for him. The child also seems to be calm, likely because secondhand smoke is an invisible hazard . One of the underlying meanings of the picture is that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Abstract There is a growing need for treatment of gangliosidoses, or the increase in lipid storage in cells. Diseases such as Tay Sach s, Sandhoff disease, Alzheimer s and HIV are at the forefront of research into how these cells affect different aspects of the body. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What Are the Root Causes of Gangliosidosis? Gangliosidosis is defined as monosialic gangliosides found in the outer edge of plasma membranes and intracellular membranes. Gangliosides are involved in the development, differentiation, and function of the nervous system (Ohmi et al, 2011). The lack of gangliosides can result in defects in nervous tissues and neurodegeneration. The two major types of gangliosides are GM1 and GM2. These are the focus in the studies presented. According to B. Bisel, B. S. Pavone, and M. Calamai, (2014) GM1 in membrane raft domains has been shown to influence the functions of lipid raft associated proteins. (p. 88) GM1 gangliosides also aid in the formation of cell cell junctions which help with cell adhesion, migration, and the invasion of cancers cells in metastasis. Accumulation of gangliosides can be detrimental to lysosomal storage and can be caused by defects in the catabolic pathway. Overabundances of GM1 gangliosides are predominantly associated with Alzheimer s disease, whereas depletion is associated with Parkinson s disease and Huntington s disease. Hydrolysis of GM2 ganglioside is catalyzed in lysosomes by ОІ hexosaminidase A (HEXA) and a non enzymic factor, GM2 activator (GM2A), is essentially required in the catabolic reaction in vivo. ... The Tsars of this dynasty faced this challenge directly through foreign military conquests and economic and political reformation, yet a distinctive foundational element stayed true throughout their reign. Tsars of Russiaconsistently used a reverence for Orthodoxy to establish a continued persecution of minority religious groups within their control. The Jewsbore the brunt of this persecution as they experienced strict laws governing their rights and constant threats of violence. Tsars throughout the Romanov history acted to strengthen their Orthodoxy by punishing the Jewish population in order to drum up support for their own regimes and domestic and foreign policies. The status of Jews in Eastern Europe was never a pleasant or hospitable one. Jews lived lives banned from certain parts of the area and within ghettos within cities. There was truly a fear of Judaism, especially that of a fake tradition of blood libel. This fear falsely declared that Jews killed Christians to use their blood in ritualistic traditions. These fears lead to many mass killing of Jews and their expulsion from major towns in 1526 (Miller 93). However, humans have a natural capacity of how much information they can attain. We are unable to store all of our acquired information without different systems that organize our information. Baddeley s working memorymodel is made up of four components that allow for temporary information to be stored (109). The central executive directs the flow of information. It functions more with delegating the way resources are used in cognitive tasks. The author uses varying methods to get these ideas across, including colour, metaphors of sailing, the valley of ashes, Gatsby s parties and ¬¬cars. A lot depends on the perception of the reader, to how the descriptions and metaphors can be viewed.
