Inattentional Blindness Paper
Abstract
Introduction
Imagine walking down the street on your cell phone and you walk past a tree filled with money
unknowingly. You d think it d be impossible to miss a tree full of money but a previous study
shows that nearly all individuals who were walking by the tree walked directly past the money
without notice (Hyman, Sarb Wise Swanson, 2014). This process is called Inattentional blindness
(IB). Inattentional blindness is the process of not seeing salient objects although we are looking
directly at them as our attention is directed at something else (Mack, 2003).
People often exaggerate their ability of detection in IB situations. Levin and Angelone (2008) found
that people vastly exaggerated their detection ability in an experiment they conducted. The
experiment consisted of asking people whether they think they would see the gorilla in the Simons
and Chabris experiment. 88% of the participants within the experiment said they would see it in
comparison to what was found in that experiment: 42% of people saw the gorilla. Similarly, Jaeger,

community greatly as it will show the effects of IBB on people.
Due to previous findings from experiments like Levin and Angelone (2008) and Jaeger, Levin
Porter (2017) It s hypothesized that participants with an expert witness testimony will have a lower
amount of Yes answers in comparison to participants without an expert witness testimony within
their scenarios. Therefore, its believed that the effect of IBB will cause participants to be overly

Marie Daly Research Paper
Marie Daly Marie Daly is a famous biochemist who had to overcome dual hurdles of racial and
gender bias to peruse her lifelong love of chemistry. Marie had to undergo judgment from her
being a woman and trying to become a scientist, which was a male dominated occupation and
also had to endure racism because she was an African American. Marie made many scientific
discoveries that we are lucky to have today. Marie Daly s full name is Marie Maynard Daly.
Marie was born on April 16th 1921 in Queens New York as an only child to Ivan and Helen Daly.
Her father, Ivan C. Daly, had emigrated from the West Indies at a young age and enrolled at
Cornell University to study chemistry. A lack of money forced him to quit college, instead he

Their work provided us with new understanding of how foods and diet can affect the health of
the heart and the circulatory system. During this time Daly also worked on how cigarettes effect
the human body. Once Daly found the importance of her work, she knew she wanted others to
have the opportunities she had. This made Daly work really hard on efforts to get students of
color enrolled in medical schools and graduate science programs. In honor of her father, in 1988
she started a scholarship, for minority students who want to study science at Queens College.
Daly retired from Albert Einstein College and from her studies completely in 1986. Marie was a
member of various different groups such as American chemical society, American Society of
Biological Chemists; Ameri can Heart Association; HarvГ©y Society; National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People; National Association of Negro Business and professional
Women, and New York Academy of Sciences Board of Governors. Marie liked being able to be

I Choose Maus by Art Spiegleman
I chose Maus by Art Spiegleman. To be honest, I learned about the book from a television show,
Comic Book Men. They were talking about a graphic novel that won the Pulitzer. That peaked my
interest, so I decided to research the topic of the book. When I discovered that it was an
autobiography about a complex relationship between a father and son, I firmly wanted to read it.
The son learning of his father s story of the holocaust was his way of to understand himself and his
heritage and the journey is fascinating. When this assignment for generalist practice two came up, I
jumped at the opportunity.
Maus is a graphic novel. A graphic novel is predominantly told with pictures over words. This
novel in particular relies on a strong and realistic artwork to tell its story along with the imagery of
mice. The novel was released in two parts, the book format is the two parts put together. It is
divided into five chapters, and has 296 pages. The first part was published in 1973 and was
completed with the second portion in 1991 to create the final complete book. This was clearly a
labor of love and a tribute to his father.
There are a multitude of issues in Maus. Loss of loved ones, couple s troubles, competition of dead
loved ones, are just to name a few. This treatment will be focused on repairing the father and son
relationship. Strained since childhood, their relationship has gotten progressively worse since the
death of Art s mother. Art struggles to understand his father on

How Does Nathaniel Hawthorne Use Symbols In The Scarlet...
Authors employ symbolism to convey a complex idea and incorporate a deeper understanding of a
novel. Many writers exert symbolism through an object, character, or a circumstance that signifies a
deeper meaning rather than directly pointing out how they feel about their novel. In The Scarlet
Letter, Hawthorne includes symbols to represent his life experiences under Puritan ideals.
Hawthorne uses symbolism in the names of the following characters; Hester Prynne, Roger
Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Pearl which represents different aspects of each characters
personality. Hawthorne selected these names based on biblical references, Puritan era, and
evocative names. In The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthornewrites a historical and romantic

his sin until the end of the novel. In Mr. Dimmesdale s secret closet, under lock and key, there

Small man who led a big nation Essay
The Small Man Who Led a Big Nation
Mahatma Gandhi was a national icon for the people of India between the years 1869 and 1948.
He is still remembered all over the world today. To follow the path of Gandhi one must traverse all
regions of India, from the houses of the highest officials to the poorest villages where the word
poverty does injustice. Gandhi led a fearless resistance against the British government, that
oppressed his people, and an endless pilgrimage to lift the spirits of his people(the people of India)
to maturity. Gandhi was very unique in his approach as he preached non violence and led a life
similar to that of the most downtrodden people of India.

Gandhi interacted with a diversified group of Indians while in Africa. He learned about many
different injustices Indians suffered from in Africa and in India. As his beliefs in satyagraha
solidified his reputation began to spread into India. It was about this time in 1914 that Gandhi
returned to India.
The people of India, who were discouraged with Britain s policies, eagerly waited for Gandhi s
return. They had been showing dissent towards the government on a small scale, but they needed
Gandhi s political initiative and leadership. The British would not share industrial secrets, levied
high taxes, restricted industrial investment, and limited any kind of economic advancement for the
Indians.(Spodek 667). Gandhi began to assist several protests that had been initiated against the
British and got the Indians to participate in hartals. These hartals are similar to sit down strikes. At
one sit down in 1919 the Indians were protesting the Rowlatt Acts. The British decided that they
would show their power and killed 379 people and injured over1100. This is when Gandhi and all
of India proclaimed non cooperation with Britain.
This action by the British led to two things: a new vigorous political movement and a grassroots
spiritual revival, both led by Gandhi. Gandhi rallied his Congress and people into a mass
movement. He emerged as a leader offering new

The Martial Arts School Program
The aim of this paper is to make the proposition and methodological defense to evaluate program
planning in reference to the organization selected from module 2.
Based to implementing the Ernie Reyes West Coast World Martial Arts Association s program; the
program implementer must commence by learning about the martial arts school program; its
mission statement, goals, and objectives must be understood. These elements are capital when
interested to implementing an organizational program. 1 Many methods can be utilized to
implement any program. In the case of the martial arts school, the program implementer can utilize
the quantitative or qualitative methods, or both as mixed method for collecting data. The selection

This methodology helps design the studies scientifically. In quantitative research methodology, data
can be collected without the participants, Rudestam Newton (2007) noted that Quantitative research
seeks objectivity by standardizing the procedures and measures as much as possible data and by
distancing the researcher from the participants. When proceeding for the implementation of the
martial arts school, the implementer can also applicate the qualitative research method to gather
data. This method requires a series of interviews, observations, and open ended questionnaires.
Effectively, qualitative research method in program evaluation allows rapid surveys, direct and
indirect interactions with participants, and feedbacks from stakeholders and clients are necessary.
Questionnaires or likers reports are also necessary, since feedback from clients, employees,
stakeholders, and others individual willing to learn about the program that is being implemented
within the organization would bring a plus in terms of modifying, implementing, or discontinuing
the program. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative method to develop the martial arts school
program is a good bet since both method would work. The optimization of the quantitative method
may promote slow data collection procedure; this process involves standardized assessment,

Why We Should Not Year Round School
Year round schooling Is more beneficial than non year round schooling. Some think there should
not be year round schooling, but others think there should be year round schooling.Research shows
that there Is no change for learning In year round schooling, but however some research has shown
they learn way more. There should be year round schooling. Reason number 1: You will learn way
more than just 9 months of school. Reason number 2: It will increase more respect for teachers
quickly. Reason number 3: Students will be able to advance more quickly.
The first reason Is that you will learn way more than just having a 9 month calendar of
schooling. For an example you will be so use to the stuff you learned It s built In your head. Also
studies have found that disadvantage of students lose about 27% more of their learning because
of the long summer breaks, spring breaks, and winter. Plus having days days off. Students will be
more advanced to the next school year why? Well first of all you don t forget what you learned. It
s gonna have you prepared for college because of the grades that showed. In addition students may
not like year round schooling, but at least you re getting better at things you haven t understood
before. (Lynch) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For an example the more time you see the students and teachers everyday you won t think of them
as a babysitter because the more and more you see them work It s just like okay there Is no point
to be rude. Also year round schooling offers to change the precipitation in the teachers. They won t
be so hard on the students. The most Important example of this reason Is teachers are taking the

The American Civil War Is No Exception
Every war has at least one pivotal point that begs the question, What if this event had happened
differently? The American Civil War is no exception. Many Southerners made claims that the
winning of the Battle of Shiloh could have won the entire war for the Confederacy. Because they
lost, however, debate is still had about who is really to blame for the failure at Shiloh. Many try to
pinpoint the blame to one specific factor whether that be the leadership under General Pierre
Gustave Toutant Beauregard following General Albert Sidney Johnstons death, the intel that was far
below par, or the equipment the Confederate soldiers had to use. In reality, it was a combination
between all these factors that would seal the Confederates fate.... Show more content on

On April 3, Gen. Johnston mobilized his troops and marched towards Pittsburg Landing where
they arrived on April 6 because of road and whether conditions. At 5:00 AM, Johnston launched a
surprise attack on the unsuspecting Union camps. Because the divisions that had little to no
experience were in the area where the attack was first made, the Confederates quickly broke
through many Union lines successfully and wreaked havoc. They stormed the camps and
slaughtered many of these men in their tents. The Union forces were pushed back at their flanks.
One line, however, stood firm against the Confederate onslaught. General Benjamin M. Prentiss
held his line and did not allow the Confederates to break through while fighting in a sunken road
that is estimated to be about 3 feet deep in what is known as the The Hornet s Nest while waiting
for reinforcements.
By the end of the first day of fighting, it seemed clear that the Confederates dominated the North
by inflicting a high number of casualties and had nearly wiped out Grant s entire force. The South
suffered an even more monumental blow that day in the death of General Albert Sidney Johnston.
Johnston was fatally shot in the leg just outside the Hornet s Nest and bled to death shortly
thereafter. As a four star general, he is still the highest ranking officer killed in

of Walmart Scott announced to do the business sustainabilitystrategy in 2005. The sustainability
will be the most focused in the 21century when the environment get worse every day. This strategy

To reduce the waste of packaging, Walmart try to work with their suppliers to develop solutions to
product packaging and developed an online packaging scorecard to gather information and monitor
their product packaging. In some extent the saving waste is also making money. Zero waste also
means that they can cut down the cost happened.
3. Sustainable Product
Walmart consistently exams the how long the product can work, including the materials which is
used in them, the factories or farms where they were made to provide sustainable products. As the
world s largest supermarket retailer, Walmart makes an important impact on the way jewelry goes
from individuals to the market. They never stop searching the reform of the retailer. By integrating
more sustainable fibers into the clothing and textiles, Walmart is working to provide their
customers with both environmentally preferable and fashionable clothing options at the prices
which they can afford. Especially for its major products in the supermarket, such as agricultural and
seafood, Walmart helps farmers to expand their businesses like cluster farming, mariner reserves, to
make more money and reduce the environmental impact of farming. Conclusions
I think every business event happens due to the economic reason so as this case. Walmart announce
its sustainability strategy. If the business always keeps the same way to make money, it will never
be successful. This innovation

Dealing with Social Conflicts in the Military
Conflict is an inevitable whenever people whether close friends, family members, co workers or
romantic partners disagree about their perceptions, desires, ideas or values. Regardless of the
substance of the disagreement, conflict arouses strong feelings. The population s tolerance for
reinterpretation of institutional values, beliefs, norms and ethics rose significantly due to
significant changes in American social norms in the 20th Century. This tolerance, in conjunction
with a transition to the primacy of personal rights over institutional needs has resulted in a society
where the good of the many has become subordinated to the good of a few. It has been said that if

Rape Culture
#RapeCultureIsWhen
These past two weeks, we have focused on the prevalent rape culture in the United States and how
that affects society. We found that sexual violence has become somewhat of a norm in the U.S.,
and that it is no longer broadcasted in the media like the atrocity it is. This, along with the inherent
gender stereotypes within society, contributes to rape culture, which is defined by the Oxford
Living Dictionary as a society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of
normalizing or trivializing sexual assault and abuse. Our society bombards us with acts of sexual
violence, through music and visual media. It is treated like a despicable act that must not be
tolerated, one where the perpetrators must be held accountable. Yet, at the same time, it is tolerated,
and the perpetrators are often allowed to roam free without punishment, while their victims are
tortured with what happened to them for the rest of their lives. This is rape culture, and although
the term is circulating more and more, the populous does not regard it as a serious issue, but as a
problem made up hysterical feminists (Rape Culture is When, Maxwell).
One of the works that we analyzed in this unit was a 2013 article by Roxanne Gay, titled The
Careless Language of Sexual Violence. Gay discusses how the media is desensitizing us to the
rape and sexual violence that runs rampant. She tells us about an eleven year old girl who was

It was found that many animal species had the ability to regenerate hair cells in the inner ear,
except mammals. Mammals were shown to have very limited hair cell regeneration, mainly in the
auditory epithelium. It was believed that hair cells in birds arose from adjacent supporting cells.
For hair cells to regenerate, it was believed that supporting cells reentered mitosis, formed daughter
cells that then differentiated into either hair cells or more supporting cells, and in doing this it
would restore function and structure to the inner ear epithelium. However, it was found that in
avian species this was not the case. Remarkably after further analysis, in many avian species,
supporting cells actually go through a process of direct differentiation. This is when the supporting
cells themselves actually change their gene expression and convert into hair cells without dividing.
There was no literature if there were changes in signaling but it would be possible since the cells
would have to have some notification in which to transdifferentiate. This has been studied in
chicken auditory epithelium. The studies show that the different mechanism is unique in its spatial
and temporal patterns which suggest that the cells are being differentially regulated. Direct
differentiation is a possible route of new hair cell development that was already discussed

The American Revolution Was A Political Revolution
In the 1700s, Great Britain was the strongest empire economically; she had established many
colonies as well as rivals in the New World. Most important was Britain s rivalry with France as it
led to the Seven Year War. The war had drained the empire economically, causing it to place taxes
on the colonies in the New World. In turn rebellions arose and led the colonies to declare
independence. For the thirteen coloniesthe American Revolutionbegan with its Declaration of

Finally the colonists were represented. The second form of Republicanism is defined by
perceiving the nation as an organic whole composed of people nobly sacrificed for the common
good for an individual s pursuit of rational self interest . This form of republicanism depicts the
idea of nationalism in the colonies. The creation of a nation created patriotic pride within the
colonies and a sense of equality. This was a change in value because the colonist were initially
subjects of the king and now every colonist is a citizen and equal. Lastly, the third form of
Republican government was more liberal since men who advanced towards this form wanted
government to respond directly to the needs of ordinary folk, rejecting any notion that the lesser
sort should automatically defer to their betters . This shows how common people had gained a say
in government through voting. This is a change in value because before the colonist didn t have a

The American Revolution was a political revolution because it resulted with change in the way
government was organized. In May 1776, before the adoption of the Declaration of Independence,
the Second Continental Congress met and decided to create a constitution before creating a new

Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes Quotes Courage
It s scientifically proven that people who live courageously have less regrets in life. Leaders have a
lot of courage, and that s what people like in leaders, but you don t have to be a leader to have
courage. Everyone s born with it in them. There are people with less courage and others with
buckets full of courage, but I know everybody has at least some in them. Courage is important
because it s taking a risk or making a decision to help yourself or others. It s doing something you
re scared of doing. In Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes there is a lot of courage shown by the
characters. We all show courage at one point or another.
Courage is important for helping others. Sarah is the most courageous character in this book
because she was brave to do things. There were many different parts of the book where she showed
courage, but definitely the most courageous one was when she was three years old and tried to

The Fellowship Of The Ring through the responsibility of companionship that is carried by

Comparing Three Chaplin Movies Essay
After seeing three Chaplin films at this point in chronological order it is not hard to notice the
extreme difference from the film City Lights to Chaplin s earlier films Mabel s Predicament and
The Pawnshop . In terms of cinematography it is real easy to see the differences in these films. To
begin the cinematography is different in that in the first two films most of the shots are wide
shots and with very minimal cuts. Also the lengths of the first two films are very short Mabel s
Predicament is only 11 minutes long and The Pawnshop is 29 minutes long. The lack of cuts and
the shorter runtime of the films indicate already it is of a shorter budget because the films were
limited in terms of how much they could film. When comparing City Lights it actually is shot like

City Lights in this case advances in story in comparison to the other Chaplin films. This is done
through a full length story that also has side characters and side stories woven in seamlessly.
Previously in the other films the focus was primarily on the Tramp and only the Tramp. However,
in City Lights we focused on the Tramp, The Blind Women, and the Rich Entrepreneur allowing
for a more full length feature film with different cohesive stories. In Ewen s article City Lights:
Immigrant Women and the Rise of the Movies she focuses on three early female archetypes in
film. These archetypes are entitled the vamp, the gamine, and the virgin. The Vamp is defined as
someone who is evil and a seductress who uses the male s sympathy of her against himself. The
Gamine is defined as having many male physical characteristics specifically short hair and also
having personality traits defining them as mischievous. Finally, the Virgin is defined as someone
who is very innocent, untainted, and pure in the eyes of

Rocky Horror Show Analysis
The Rocky Horror Show began as more of a hobby than anything else; it was just something that
creator Richard O Brien concocted as a side project while he was going through a transitional
period between acting jobs O Brien was born in England in 1942, but was raised primarily in
New Zealand, where he dropped out of school at the age of fifteen and developed an affinity for
the B horror films and the science fiction features of the time, which was his first glimpse into
the world of theatre, and he was drawn in immediately. O Brien struggled for a long time trying
to find work, working as a stuntman on films such as Carry On, Cowboy and Casino Royale. His
first breakthrough, however, came when he was given a small part in a production of Jesus Christ
Superstar. Though his performance was miserable, his true highlight was when he met with the
director of Superstar, Jim Sharman. He presented to Sharman his early draft of Rocky Horror, a
rock inspired musical theatre production titled They Came from Denton High. Sharman agreed to...

Sonnet 116 Figurative Language Essay
Romeo and Juliet may be one of Shakespeare s greatest works, but the famous poet has written a
numerous amount of other fantastic masterpieces. Another one of Shakespeare s great works
Sonnet 116 , was written during the Victorian time period in England. This poem is Shakespeare s
interpretation of what true loveis, and what it looks like. Throughout the poem, there are many
literary devices used to convey Shakespeare s belief on true love such as metaphors, imagery,
and repetition. The use of metaphors is commonly seen throughout Shakespeare s poem.
Metaphors are used in the poem to describe how love is a guide for lost humans. In the middle of
the poem on line 7 love is compared to the star to every wand ring bark (Shakespeare line 7). In
that line, the star is an allusion to the North star, while the wand ring bark is a reference to any

Through numerous literary techniques, from simple ones as metaphors and repetition to more
complicated devices such as imagery, Shakespeare has successfully crafted a poem with such
deep meaning that resembles the true idea of love. From using metaphors to compare love to a
guide to using imagery to show loves perseverance and strength, and finally using repetition to
show what love is not, he has successfully left his ideas in the mind of the reader. To end his
famous poem Shakespeare has a simple message to all, if he is wrong about his belief on what
love is, then no one on this planet has truly experienced and felt love and Shakespeare himself
had never truly been a great writer and poet. Ranging from the idea of love to describing what it is

In this world, people are the most important resources for business. This is extremely genuine with
respect to a service intensive sector, which is Hospitality and Tourism (H T) industry (Baum, 2006).

In Jane Austen s Persuasion love and family is a major thing I learned to see and control just
because of this book. Jane Austen is a very interesting woman. She is 7 out of 8 kids. Her sister and
her Cassandra were very close. Both had plenty of chances of marring and having a family. By 25,
she had written 3 books, Persuasion not being one of them. She had written her last book in
1818, Persuasion. In my eyes Jane was a normal England girl. She was homed school, had a big
loving family, and perused her dream. She didn t get the respect she deserved, but did write pretty
good books. Jane passed away July 18. 1817, she died of Addison s disease which is a deadly

gave her a biographical notice saying she was the author of all these great books. (Sutherland)
Some love her some hate her, but Jane Austen is actually loved by many. Some call her a heroine
and a heroine is a woman admired of idealized for her courage, outstand achievements, or noble
qualities. She just might be a hero to some people. She is very relevant because she talks about
stuff that people go through till this day. Like love, money, friendship, and family. I ve read a lot
of websites and they all say she writes with a great sense of irony, humor, and realism. She had

In order to be civilized Cherokee men had to cease hunting and attend to either the fields of herd

something that is a woman s job many turned to herding livestock as an alternative. Cherokee
women were told that they could no longer work in the fields but should work in the household as a

women settlers were lazy and they did not want their women to be the same way. Soon though
many Cherokee women began working in the household, cooking, cleaning, or sewing. The main
way Cherokees could be considered civilized was to accept Christianity. The U.S. government sent
missionaries into Indian Territory to build schools. At these schools though they not only taught

Quality Dimensions And Measures Tables
Quality Dimensions and Measures Tables
In 2000, a Cincinnati nursing home had an unfortunate accident in which a bottle of nitrogen was
mistaken for pure oxygen. As a result, four residents passed away. This situation provides an
opportunity for organizations to look at how their processes may lead to potential failures. It is also
important to understand how certain conditions can influence errors and violation within the
workplace. In this incidence, OSHA turned the case over to the FDA for further investigation.
Health care administrators should understand the differences between the two agencies so that
adverse events are reported to the correctly. Another vital role for a health care administrator is to
understand the five principles of the Culture of Safety model, how the model could have been used
to avoid this error, and how to apply them within their institutions to avoid other potential mistakes.
Perrow s Factors and Higher Risks of Accidents Health care institutions are pitted against a barrage
of potential hazards, some of which can be life threatening to the patient and employee. In the
relentless attempt to secure and save lives, Charles Perrow suggests that complex systems are prone
to inevitable accidents identifying three universal elements (Sollecito Johnson, 2013, pp. 251 252):
1.Human error regardless of the level of skill and training will eventually falter.

Vocation
People of genius do not excel in any profession because they work in it, they work in it because
they exel. Such a large part of our lives is figuring out what to do with our lives. There are so
many options; often times people are lost as to where to go. In our society, many of the decisions
we make are made with money in mind. People will do almost anything for money, even if that
means being unhappy. This class, and my SI education in general has framed for me a new way of
living. That is, living happily. This does not mean that the work/job I perform is not hard. Instead, it
means, that I must find something that I enjoy doing, and find a career based around my interest.
This concept is essentially vocation. Mick McCarthy,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McCarthy believes that he was partly shaped by his home environment (which was steeped in
civic responsibility ) and his educational background. His Jesuit education at SI and SCU gave
him the language to access and discover what, at a far more profound and mysterious level, I so
desired. In sum, McCarthy s discovery of vocation is a combination of mystery, history, desire
and attraction. His approach in determination of a vocation appears to largely a dialogue with
himself and God. Spohn frames his essay on vocation with Ignatian spirituality. He opens with a
description of a job seeker who wants more than just financial compensation from his life work.
He wants his job to have more meaning. In other words, this job seeker is called to the challenge
of discernment in determining a vocation. Spohn breaks down the different aspects of how
Ignatian spiritually helps one seek the right vocation for them. The first important step is prayerful
reflection. This helps one understand personal desires, special talents and the needs of the world
and helps set a foundation for seeking and choosing a path. An authentic calling goes beyond
personal fulfillment and satisfaction to a broader concern for justice which demands that the needs
of others are addressed, even if they are strangers.

1982 by Allen Neuharth, head of the Gannett newspaper chain, it reached a circulation of one

Leading up to the collapse of Washington Mutual, the downfall of the housing market was
impacting the mortgage portfolios of Washington Mutual. A month before the collapse the bank
tried to auction itself off, with little to no offers. Washington Mutual s customers began pulling
out their deposits, reaching $16.7 billion in just a couple days after Lehman Brothers had filed for
bankruptcy protection on September 15, 2008. Because of the overwhelming amount of deposits
that had been pulled from the bank, Washington Mutual did not have enough cash or liquidity
resources to meet their obligations and in turn proved to be an unsafe bank to do business with.
The FDIC rapidly set a deadline for offers by parties interested in taking over the bank on a

on that Thursday, J.P. Morgan bought Washington Mutual for $1.9 billion. J.P. Morgan was able to

The Legal Profession in Ireland is made up of two main divisions, Solicitors and Barristers.
The Profession and their practises have long been faced with recommendations for reform. The

Legal profession in Ireland is currently largely self regulated.
When regarding Regulation of the profession, the 2006 Competition Authority s report summarises,
that they would like to see the introduction of an entirely independent statutory body entitled the
Legal Services Commission to provide external regulation to the profession, it explains that The
Bar Council and The Law Society are the representative bodies for Solicitors and Barristers, this
status requires them to lobby on their behalf of their members. A conflict is created as they are

With regard to regulation, the 2011 Legal Services Regulation Bill puts forward the establishment

Unity is preserved and family name is heavily cherished. Asians strongly believe that problems
must be kept within the family, and that problems are a blemish upon the family name as quoted by
Lien Roberts, a Vietnamese mother. Immigration is also very popular amongst Asians. Many
immigrate to democratic places such as the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. Many believe
before they emigrate, that their new land will be much better than the one they currently occupy.
Just in the Greater Toronto Area, there are about 380,000 Chinese Canadians as reported by Tony
Wong from The Toronto Star. As reported by Mr. Wong, China is the major source of immigration
to Canada. However, China isn t the only place where immigration comes from. Place such as
Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and even India, Mauritius, and Jamaica also has emigrants to Canada.
Three point four percent of the entire population of the United States is Asian and each year, that
number is getting greater and greater. Because the United States gives them a better opportunity for
growth, much if the Asia s immigration goes here. After battling racism for about a century, the
Asian population in the United States is the fastest growing ethnic group in the country. Today,
Asian Americans are the fastest growing U.S. minority, increasing at fifteen times the rate of non
Hispanic whites, and doubling in just the past ten years. The growth is phenomenal. Sociologist
James M. Henslin states that most

The Comedic Structure In Nbc s The Office
In most television shows today, comedy is expressed in a humorous way. However, audience does
not realize that there is more to a comedy than just laughter. Instead of a death in a tragedy, comedy
illustrates a happy ever after ending. NBC s The Office, illustrates the comedic structure through
the relationship of two characters, Jim Halpert, a formal sales man, and Pam Beesly, the
receptionist. In a comedy show, there is a specific structure that writers must follow, especially
through a relationship. First part of the structure is the Shadow of Confusion, the part where the
hero or heroine is introduced and the audience can clearly see that they are made for each other. In
season one, Jim and Pam are shown to be great friends and to... Show more content on

In season three, Pam and Jim finally talk about their true feelings with one another. Pam
eventually grows tired of hiding her feelings from Jim and, on beach day, confesses to him in front
of the entire office staff that he was the true reason she called off her wedding and that she misses
his friendship ( Beach Games ). Later that night, Jim opens up to Pam about how he feels as if he
had never come back from Stamford because of how many unresolved issues they have. Even
though they appear to reconcile, Jim s relationship with Karen and the possibility of him being
promoted to a position at Corporate keep them apart. In the last episode, The Job, Jim realizes
he can no longer fight his feelings for Pam. He decides to withdraw his name from consideration
for his big job at Corporate and breaks up with Karen as well. Once he got back to the office, he
ran to the conference room and asks her out on a date. This gives the audience a sign of relief
because both character finally realize they are meant for each other. In addition, as their
relationship grew throughout seasons four and five, they finally get married at Niagara Falls ( The
Meeting ). This clearly shows the last step of a happy ever after ending that a comedy

Judgemental Effects Of Common And Unique Performance Measures
The Balance Scorecard:
Judgemental Effects of Common
And Unique Performance Measures
I. Introduction
The article I decided to critique for the purpose on management accounting 2 is by Marlys Lipe and
Steven Salterio. There article entitled В‘The Balanced Scorecard: Judgmental Effects of Common
and Unique Performance Measures came from the July 2000 edition of the Accounting Review
journal.
The Balance Scorecard (BSC) was originated by Robert Kaplan and David Norton in the early
1990 s as a strategic approach, and performance management system that would enable
organisations to translate a company s vision and strategy into implementation. It essentially gives
managers and executives a more В‘balanced view of the company s ... Show more content on

Lipe and Salterio after considering the above issues and theories want to assess if Slovic and
MacPhillamys (1974) findings are directly transferable to a BSC scenario, they have reasons to
believe that the reliance on common measures may not be so obvious with regard to BSC results;
due to managers better understanding their business units and being able to analyse them
individually should reduce their emphasis on common measures.
IV. Methodology
For the purpose of this article, Lipe and Salterio wanted to examine if there was an over
dependence on common measures when it comes to evaluating a BSC of a business unit. For this
purpose they used 58 M.B.A. students with on average, more than five years of work experience.
The students had to evaluate two divisions of a fictitious clothing firm WCS Incorporated.
The experimental case quotes WCS s mission statement, introduces the managers of the two
business units (divisions), describes the strategies of each division, and presents a balanced
scorecard for each division. The M.B.A. student s task was to act as WCS senior executive and
decide a judgement for each division s manager based on the facts provided. The case follows
Kaplan and Norton s strict theory that each unit develops its own specific scorecard and a superior
manager (MBA students) evaluates the unit relative to this scorecard.
The two divisions were 1.) RadWear;

Gas Transportation Methods Of Natural Gas
GAS TRANSPORTATION METHODS
Natural gas is a clean and environmental friendly energy source which is estimated to constitute a
major part of world energy consumption in the coming years. Usage of natural gas is increasing
due to its relatively cheaper costs than diesel or gasoline. Transportation and Storage falls under
the final stage of Oil and Gas processing where it gets transported to the end user for further use in
industry, plant or any other facility. Transportation of natural gasremains as a challenge due to its
isolated reserves throughout the world. Natural gas has more problems in transportation and
storage when compared to other forms of energy such as petroleum, coal etc. The main reason is
due to the energy density of natural gas which is low at ambient temperatures and pressures
(Kidnay et al. 2011). So in order to transport the gas by pipeline, its energy density has to be
increased using high pressures. Another problem of Natural gas due to its low energy density,
lies in its storage. Natural gas is highly volatile and sophisticated storage facilities are to be
provided to prevent any hazards. Therefore natural gas has to be transported continuously to the
end user avoiding reasons for storage. When there is less demand for its usage, natural gas has to
be converted to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and then stored.
Otherwise transportation of natural gas is carried out in different ways such as:
1. Pipelines
2. Compressed Natural gas (CNG)
3. Liquefied

Driving Age Olds
I stare out the window of my second floor classroom. My windows face the rear of the building,
and offer a bird s eye view of the empty student parking lot. At the beginning and end of each
school day, I watch the students pull in and out of the parking lot. Sixteen to eighteen year olds are
awful drivers. They should make the drivingage twenty one. All the current research says the
human brain doesn t fully develop until twenty one, which means sixteen year olds are virtually
incapable of making good decision. Over the past six years, I ve seen at least a dozen fender
benders, and watched two students take a God awful tumble out the back of a pick up truck that
they were riding in on the last day of school. The students had a cooler filled... Show more content

Voltaire
Voltaire s Letters on England is a collection of written documents that Voltaire wrote between 1726
and 1729 on his experiences he had while staying in England. After its publication in French in
1734, many people of French ethnicity saw it as a bashing of the French government, and even a
little bit on the Catholic religion. Voltairedoes seem to be fairly favorable towards the English in his
letters, which is understandable after he was exiled in his homeland of France multiple times. In
many cases Voltaire saw in Englandwhat he wished to see in France. In England, Voltaire saw a
land with a more tolerant government, and freedom of religion as compared to France, which he
saw as cruel and oppressive. Voltaire goes into detail,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is one of the many issues brought up in Letters on England that the French took as a slight
towards themselves after the letters were published. I believe that Voltaire was so firm on his
belief of a separation of religion and state because he himself was not a follower of any said
religion. Although Voltaire was not an atheist as many believed him to be. Voltaire did not
believe that a person did not have to be involved in any one religion to believe in God. Voltaire
believed in a higher power one supreme, intelligent being but not in any one particular religion.
Although there are aspects of the Anglicans that Voltaire does seem to disapprove of, he does
believe the Anglicans to be more virtuous than the French Catholics; another insult to the French
people. In morals the Anglican clergy are more virtuous than the French, and this is why....They
are not called to the higher positions in the church until very late in life and at an age when men
have no other passion than avarice, when their ambition has little to feed on. He goes on to talk
about how positions in England rewarded for long services in not

You d think it d be impossible to miss a tree full of money but a previous study shows that nearly all individuals who were walking by the tree walked directly past the money without notice (Hyman, Sarb Wise Swanson, 2014). This process is called Inattentional blindness (IB). Inattentional blindness is the process of not seeing salient objects although we are looking directly at them as our attention is directed at something else (Mack, 2003). People often exaggerate their ability of detection in IB situations. Levin and Angelone (2008) found that people vastly exaggerated their detection ability in an experiment they conducted. The experiment consisted of asking people whether they think they would see the gorilla in the Simons and Chabris experiment. 88% of the participants within the experiment said they would see it in comparison to what was found in that experiment: 42% of people saw the gorilla. • 15. Rape Culture #RapeCultureIsWhen These past two weeks, we have focused on the prevalent rape culture in the United States and how that affects society. We found that sexual violence has become somewhat of a norm in the U.S., and that it is no longer broadcasted in the media like the atrocity it is. This, along with the inherent gender stereotypes within society, contributes to rape culture, which is defined by the Oxford Living Dictionary as a society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of normalizing or trivializing sexual assault and abuse. Our society bombards us with acts of sexual violence, through music and visual media. It is treated like a despicable act that must not be tolerated, one where the perpetrators must be held accountable. Yet, at the same time, it is tolerated, and the perpetrators are often allowed to roam free without punishment, while their victims are tortured with what happened to them for the rest of their lives. This is rape culture, and although the term is circulating more and more, the populous does not regard it as a serious issue, but as a problem made up hysterical feminists (Rape Culture is When, Maxwell). One of the works that we analyzed in this unit was a 2013 article by Roxanne Gay, titled The Careless Language of Sexual Violence. Gay discusses how the media is desensitizing us to the rape and sexual violence that runs rampant. She tells us about an eleven year old girl who was gang raped by eighteen men in ... Mammals were shown to have very limited hair cell regeneration, mainly in the auditory epithelium. It was believed that hair cells in birds arose from adjacent supporting cells. For hair cells to regenerate, it was believed that supporting cells reentered mitosis, formed daughter cells that then differentiated into either hair cells or more supporting cells, and in doing this it would restore function and structure to the inner ear epithelium. However, it was found that in avian species this was not the case. Remarkably after further analysis, in many avian species, supporting cells actually go through a process of direct differentiation. This is when the supporting cells themselves actually change their gene expression and convert into hair cells without dividing. There was no literature if there were changes in signaling but it would be possible since the cells would have to have some notification in which to transdifferentiate. This has been studied in chicken auditory epithelium. Comparing Three Chaplin Movies Essay After seeing three Chaplin films at this point in chronological order it is not hard to notice the extreme difference from the film City Lights to Chaplin s earlier films Mabel s Predicament and The Pawnshop . In terms of cinematography it is real easy to see the differences in these films. To begin the cinematography is different in that in the first two films most of the shots are wide shots and with very minimal cuts. In season one, Jim and Pam are shown to be great friends and to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In season three, Pam and Jim finally talk about their true feelings with one another. Pam eventually grows tired of hiding her feelings from Jim and, on beach day, confesses to him in front of the entire office staff that he was the true reason she called off her wedding and that she misses his friendship ( Beach Games ). Later that night, Jim opens up to Pam about how he feels as if he had never come back from Stamford because of how many unresolved issues they have. Even though they appear to reconcile, Jim s relationship with Karen and the possibility of him being promoted to a position at Corporate keep them apart. In the last episode, The Job, Jim realizes he can no longer fight his feelings for Pam. He decides to withdraw his name from consideration for his big job at Corporate and breaks up with Karen as well. Once he got back to the office, he ran to the conference room and asks her out on a date. Introduction The article I decided to critique for the purpose on management accounting 2 is by Marlys Lipe and Steven Salterio. There article entitled В‘The Balanced Scorecard: Judgmental Effects of Common and Unique Performance Measures came from the July 2000 edition of the Accounting Review journal. The Balance Scorecard (BSC) was originated by Robert Kaplan and David Norton in the early 1990 s as a strategic approach, and performance management system that would enable organisations to translate a company s vision and strategy into implementation. It essentially gives managers and executives a more В‘balanced view of the company s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lipe and Salterio after considering the above issues and theories want to assess if Slovic and MacPhillamys (1974) findings are directly transferable to a BSC scenario, they have reasons to believe that the reliance on common measures may not be so obvious with regard to BSC results; due to managers better understanding their business units and being able to analyse them individually should reduce their emphasis on common measures. IV. Methodology For the purpose of this article, Lipe and Salterio wanted to examine if there was an over dependence on common measures when it comes to evaluating a BSC of a business unit. For this purpose they used 58 M.B.A. students with on average, more than five years of work experience. The students had to evaluate two divisions of a fictitious clothing firm WCS Incorporated. The experimental case quotes WCS s mission statement, introduces the managers of the two business units (divisions), describes the strategies of each division, and presents a balanced scorecard for each division. The M.B.A. student s task was to act as WCS senior executive and decide a judgement for each division s manager based on the facts provided. The case follows Kaplan and Norton s strict theory that each unit develops its own specific scorecard and a superior manager (MBA students) evaluates the unit relative to this scorecard. The two divisions were 1.) RadWear; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Gas Transportation Methods Of Natural Gas GAS TRANSPORTATION METHODS Natural gas is a clean and environmental friendly energy source which is estimated to constitute a major part of world energy consumption in the coming years. Usage of natural gas is increasing due to its relatively cheaper costs than diesel or gasoline. Transportation and Storage falls under the final stage of Oil and Gas processing where it gets transported to the end user for further use in industry, plant or any other facility. Transportation of natural gasremains as a challenge due to its isolated reserves throughout the world. Natural gas has more problems in transportation and storage when compared to other forms of energy such as petroleum, coal etc. The main reason is due to the energy density of natural gas which is low at ambient temperatures and pressures (Kidnay et al. 2011). So in order to transport the gas by pipeline, its energy density has to be increased using high pressures. Another problem of Natural gas due to its low energy density, lies in its storage. Natural gas is highly volatile and sophisticated storage facilities are to be provided to prevent any hazards. Therefore natural gas has to be transported continuously to the end user avoiding reasons for storage. When there is less demand for its usage, natural gas has to be converted to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and then stored. Otherwise transportation of natural gas is carried out in different ways such as: 1. Pipelines 2. Compressed Natural gas (CNG) 3. Liquefied ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the beginning and end of each school day, I watch the students pull in and out of the parking lot. Sixteen to eighteen year olds are awful drivers. They should make the drivingage twenty one. All the current research says the human brain doesn t fully develop until twenty one, which means sixteen year olds are virtually incapable of making good decision. • 48. Voltaire Voltaire s Letters on England is a collection of written documents that Voltaire wrote between 1726 and 1729 on his experiences he had while staying in England. After its publication in French in 1734, many people of French ethnicity saw it as a bashing of the French government, and even a little bit on the Catholic religion. Voltairedoes seem to be fairly favorable towards the English in his letters, which is understandable after he was exiled in his homeland of France multiple times. In many cases Voltaire saw in Englandwhat he wished to see in France. In England, Voltaire saw a land with a more tolerant government, and freedom of religion as compared to France, which he saw as cruel and oppressive. Voltaire goes into detail,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is one of the many issues brought up in Letters on England that the French took as a slight towards themselves after the letters were published. I believe that Voltaire was so firm on his belief of a separation of religion and state because he himself was not a follower of any said religion. Although Voltaire was not an atheist as many believed him to be. Voltaire did not believe that a person did not have to be involved in any one religion to believe in God. Voltaire believed in a higher power one supreme, intelligent being but not in any one particular religion. Although there are aspects of the Anglicans that Voltaire does seem to disapprove of, he does believe the Anglicans to be more virtuous than the French Catholics; another insult to the French people. In morals the Anglican clergy are more virtuous than the French, and this is why....They are not called to the higher positions in the church until very late in life and at an age when men have no other passion than avarice, when their ambition has little to feed on.
