Underground Railroads And The Underground Railroad
Underground railroads were a network of secret routes and safe houses used during the 19th century
slaves from African descent that were in the United States, and wanted escape to the free states and
Canada. The safe houses located on these routes were run by abolitionists and people that were
sympathetic towards slaves. The Underground Railroad reached its height during the 1850s and 1860s.
It s difficult to determine how many people actually traveled the routes and made it to freedom, but it
is estimated that somewhere around 100,000 slaves journeyed along these paths. It is unfortunate
however, that not many people of this 100,000 made it to freedom. There were just around 5,000
recorded cases of runaway slaves, and only about 1,000 a year made it to safety during the peak of this
time. The lives of many slaves were horrendous during the early America s, so many of them sought
refuge in the Underground Railroad where they dealt with even dirtier, more dangerous conditions.
However, this helped thousands of slaves successfully reach freedom and helped create one of the
biggest slave movements of the 1800s. How it all began. In 1786, George Washington complained one
of his runaway slaves was helped by a society of Quakers, formed for such purposes. Before long, by
1831, the system grew into what is now the Underground Railroad. Many people think the
Underground Railroad had something to do with paths that were once railroad tracks or something,
but that is not the

Compare And Contrast The Valley Of Ashes In The Great Gatsby
Imagine a world where one side of the equator was filled with wealth, happiness, and content. Now
imagine the other side of the equator filled with poverty, sadness, and death. These two completely
opposing halves enhance each other s descriptions and make one think of each side more deeply about
the concept. This same scenario is also present in one of America s favorite novels based upon the
1920s and the American dream. In F. Scott Fitzgerald s novel, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald juxtaposes
two contrasting places, the Valley of Ashes and New York City, using imagery to magnify the
difference between reality and a fantasy, which is central to the meaning of the work. The Valley of
Ashes is halfway between West Egg of Long Island and New York City. When one comes upon the
Valley of Ashes, it is not what they see, but what they do not see: sunshine, colors, or a settling
feeling. The Valley of Ashes is nothing but a dull location, filled with unsatisfied farmers,
unsuccessful gardens, billowing smoke, and mounds of ashes that are prominent below the gray skies.
Nick Carraway, the narrator of The Great Gatsby, describes the Valley of Ashes as ...a fantastic farm
where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms
of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move
dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air (Fitzgerald 23). Fitzgerald describes this
location as unpleasant for those who enter and it is seen as a vulnerable place due to the billboard of
Dr. T.J. Eckleburg looking upon the location at all times. This descriptive quote foreshadows that
something bad will occur in this area during the novel. As for New York City, in the novel it is defined
as the perfect place to live life to the fullest and not have a care of the world. As a reader, it is
expected to envision this city full of lights as a bright, restless, and colorful place. Nick Carraway
depicts New York City as a ...city rising up across the river in white heaps and sugar lumps all built
with a wish out of non olfactory money. The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city
seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of

Advantages Of Having An Architect
Do I need an architect?
There is no law saying you have to employ an architect, however its advised that you do employ an
architect.
At any point you need planning permission, you need an architect
Without an architect you are putting your trust in a builder whose judgement and vision is one you ll
need to trust, if this is the case then an architect is less necessary
If you are not sure of what you want, then an architect can help give you ideas and guide you in the
right direction.
If you don t trust builders, or are busy or inexperienced, an architect can help you keep an informed
eye on the builders and make sure the project stays on tract

1. The contractor will work it out, it s their job Simply put builders only want to build and not work
out possible design flaws. Contractors prefer when decisions have been made and documented so that
they don t have to chase your customer/client for decisions and quarries. Thus Crane Designs ensures
your contractor is to given the correct information and expectations.
2. Contractors don t want architects on the job site All good contractors that I ve worked with are glad
to have me around and call me often with questions, at the end of the day it s a collaborative effort.
They respect me and I respect them.
3. They should be able to figure it out from the drawings Yes they are experienced enough and
intelligent enough but drawings are interpretive and they often need confirmation from either the
architect or home owner, to make sure they are understanding the complex aspects before money is
spent.
4. The contractors know what will meet code Most builders don t have the time to keep up with the
details of the codes the way an architect must. Furthermore, it is the architect who is licensed by state
law to uphold the building regulation codes, this is not the contractor s

Essay on Visual Acuity as a Function of Retinal Eccentricity
Visual Acuity Measured as a Function of Retinal Eccentricity
Visual acuity is a measure of an observer s ability to see fine spatial detail (Cavonius amp;
Schumacher, 1966). There are a number of factors that affect visual acuity, such as illumination and
contrast, and various ways to measure it (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). One way to measure visual
acuity is through target detection which requires the perception of the orientation of a stimulus such as
a Landolt C or a Snellen E (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). The participant in the current experiment
was referred to have their acuity tested. Target detection of a stimulus was used to measure the
participant s visual acuity as a function of retinal eccentricity of the target. ... Show more content on

The height and width of this optotype is designed to be five times the thickness of the stroke width and
gap width, therefore the size of each critical detail is 1/5th of the overall height (Kalloniatis amp; Luu,
2005). Four stimulus sizes were used in the experiment as visual acuity was to be tested at four
eccentricities (0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚). These four stimulus sizes were calculated using the approximate
minimum angle of resolution (MAR) of each eccentricity obtained from Millodot et al. s (1975)
normal data. This value was then used to find the gap size and hence the stimulus size using a distance
of 600cm. The reason for using the distance value of 600cm was because it is close to the threshold
and therefore would be the starting point of stimulus presentation for each of the eccentricities. The
formula used was: gap size = 600*tan(MAR˚) ˃˃ size = 5 (600*tan(MAR˚))
The stimulus sizes (and critical feature sizes) calculated and used for the eccentricities 0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and
60˚ were 0.9cm (0.18cm), 2.2cm (0.44cm), 6.13cm (1.23cm) and 17.5cm (3.5cm) respectively.
Procedure
As already stated, it was decided by the experimenter to test visual acuity at the following
eccentricities: 0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚. Measuring the MAR at each of these eccentricities would give a
good indication of where the participant s visual acuity measure lies in comparison to normal data.

A New Drug Development Process
Introduction: A new drug development process starts with animal testing, before it is been tested in
humans. These animal studies are designed to ensure that the drug is effective and safe in animals.
Moreover, the results obtained should be reproducible. But even the reproducible results on animal
studies cannot provide relevant prediction of the safe and effectiveness of a new drug. Scientists often
stipulate the structural and physiological similarities between human and animals as a reason for
performing animal testing and then relating or extrapolating the results for the first in human clinical
testing, also known as Phase I clinical trials. Although, it is very clear that the human life expectancy
is much higher compared to animals, because of the way things metabolize in human body, or to the
environment a human body is exposed to or due to the minute genetic difference between human
species and some other species. Also, diseases which are imposed by genetic engineering into the
animals during animal studies differ significantly than the natural occurrence of a disease. Scientists
are aware of these flaws that come with the use of animal model testing, like drugs that may be safe
and effective in animals might not necessarily be safe and effective in humans. One such example is
Thalidomide , which was used in 1950 s as a sedative product and was used to treat morning sickness
of pregnant women. This drug was totally safe and effective in animals, but when used

Apply: Atoms are most stable when their outermost shell is full. If their outermost shell is not full,
atoms tend to gain, lose, or share electrons until the shell fills up. While doing this, atoms react and
form chemical bonds with other atoms.
Based on this, what can you infer about the reactivity of helium and neon? They are both noble gases
so they are very resistant to a chemical reaction and don t react to other elements.
11. Think and discuss: Select the PERIODIC TABLE tab, and look at the second row, or period, of the
table. How does this row reflect the subshells of the second shell?
The second period on the periodic table consists of elements that are filling the 2nd energy level.
Activity B:
Atomic radii

On the PERIODIC TABLE tab, select Na (sodium).
Select the ELECTRON CONFIGURATION tab.
Question: How do the radii of atoms change across a period of the periodic table?
1. Predict: Positively charged protons in the nucleus of an atom are attracted to negatively charged
electrons.
How do you think the atomic radii will change as electrons are added to a shell?
As more electrons are added the distance will increase which cause atomic radius to change.

Case Study on a Three Year Old With Bronchiolitis
Introduction:
This paper will discuss a case study of Liam, a three month old boy who is transferred from the
General Practitioner (GP) to paediatric ward with bronchiolitis. Initially, Liam s chief health issues
will be identified, following by nursing assessment and diagnoses of the child s need. Focus will be
made on the management of two major health problems: respiratory distress and dehydration, and
summary and evaluation of the interventions with evidence of learning. Lastly, a conclusion of author
s self evaluation will be present.
Identification of specific key issues:

feeding for the past four days. His positive result of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Blood gas analysis may be performed to determine if high concentration oxygen therapy is needed
(Bush Thomson, 2007). The management of fever would be a part of care plan when the infant is
febrile due to infection (Axton Fugate 2009).
It is also important to keep accurate record of Liam s fluid balance chart, and assess Liam s capillary
refill, skin turgor, fontanel condition and mucous membranes every shift, as they provide information
about the infant s hydration status (Axton Fugate 2009). Urine analysis may be performed to provide
information on hydration status and/or determine if Liam has urine tract infection (UTI) (Axton
Fugate 2009; Crisp, Taylor, Douglas, Rebeiro, 2013). Management of dehydration would be one of
nursing interventions if urine sample shows a high urine specific gravity, and antibiotics would be
administered if a bacterium is detected in the urine sample (Axton Fugate 2009). Feeding ability
should be assessed in order to determine the route of fluid intake (i.e. oral, nasogastric or intravenous
fluids) (PMH, 2013).
Rapid virological testing for RSV is recommended in order to guide isolation and allocate Liam into
cohorts in hospital (Fitzgerald, 2011).
Finally, the nurse may need to assess Liam s parents understanding of bronchiolitis in order to
determine what information that nurses need to provide, and

Participatory Action Research And Explanation
In the reviewed literature, a case is made for participatory action research and explanation given on its
composition and on how it enhances the quality of research (Greenwood et al, 1993). They define
participatory action research as a type of research that brings together a member of the organization
(insider) and an expert research to carry out the research process.
Gibbons et al (1994) talks about the knowledge production mode as well as a number of author later
(Huff and Huff, 2001; Huff, 2000; Starky and Madan, 2001; Tranfield and Starky, 1998). The
definition is articulated into traditional or mode 1 (pursuit of scientific truths), and interactive or mode
2 (production of knowledge by application) (Huff, 2000). Mode 3 and mode 1.5 is also referenced by
Huff (2000). It is worth noting that no specific mode fit my organization exactly: I see a lot of mode 2
as management wants to solve problems quickly to reduce loss.
In the problem solving process, innovations (their spread or lack of spread), pro innovation biases, and
their influencers will be encountered. From review literature, Abrahamson (1991) teaches us how to
handle these and how to prevent pro innovation biases by using a matrix and rejecting assumptions.
Critically reflecting on my wicked problem, some thoughts were investigated and in some cases
evidence: these were reviewed.
First to consider is if a metaphor (or school of thought) can adequately represent the totality of our
organizational life. This

Summary Of The Overcoat By Nikolai Gogol
In a time of large, corrupt, and ineffective bureaucracy, Nikolai Gogol looks provide a humorous
perspective on life in Tsarist Russia. Through both The Nose and The Overcoat, Gogol reveals his true
nature as a comical humorist with the intention of giving readers a laugh but also of mocking human
vanity. From the very beginning of The Overcoat, it becomes clear the story has a comedic nature.
While explaining to the reader the touchiness of departments in Russia, Gogol gives the district police
chief as an example: He plainly demonstrated that all the imperial institutions were going to the dogs,
and that the Czar s sacred name was being taken in vain; and in proof he appended to the complain a
romance, in which the district chief of police is made to appear about once in every ten pages, and
sometimes in a downright drunken condition (Gogol 1). The scenario Gogol describes is one of
absurdity. How could someone get so worked up over a book that has no intent of offending them? No
normal person would ever become so hysterical over a piece of literature that indirectly offends them.
Claiming that the whole political system of Russia is being destroyed and that royalty had been
disgraced because of a simple character in a book that resembles oneself is preposterous. To a rational
mind, the police chief s over emotional reaction is clearly insane, as a normal person does not have the
narcissism to take minute details personally. This laughable situation

Essay about Grunge
Grunge
In the isolated city of Seattle during the mid 1980 s a new sound and attitude was developing.
Although it didn t yet have a coined term it would later become know as Grunge, originally a tounge
in cheek term for the pungent guitar noise propagated by the cultish independent label Sub Pop (
Grunge ). This mix of 70 s metal and early 80 s punk blasted into mainstream America and brought
the hard rock sound of the 70 s back to life, but the sudden, unexpected and to some unwanted, fame
and popularity would prove to much for it and like so many pop culture movements before, it would
fade away under the pressure( History ). Grunge owes it s start in part to the area in which it was

Grunge wasn t a produced sound, the independent record labels that started to pop up where usually
friends of the band members or the band s themselves. No one signed contracts, a shake of a hand and
the band and label were now in business together. Unlike the large rock bands of the 70 s or the pop
bands of today Grunge bands didn t go seeking major record labels, they played to crowds of drunken
friends and locals. They would play in clubs and bars where the crowd would get drunk and thrash
about wildly. The Seattle phenomenon wouldn t have been possible without the network of college
radio, fanzines, and indie contributors that sprang up in the wake of punk rock ( Grunge City ). The
bands never expected to get big, most had a tight following of fans who were all that kept them going.
The local fans had a lot to do with the development of Grunge. Grunge fans were the first fans to
create fanzines. Fanzines were cheaply created magazines used to spread news about their favorite
band, where they would be playing next, what their message was or just about the band members
themselves. This small following of fans didn t put any pressure on a band, when they got up to
perform it was to have fun and see how wild they could get the crowd. This lack of pressure and
knowledge of how corporate America worked was a key factor in the quick downfall of Grunge. In
1991 Michael Jackson and Paula Abdul were at the top of the

Ethanol Fuel Essay
Well we all know that the energy system is very unstable because the total energy available on the
earth is limited, and man has exploited all the conventional technologies to fulfill his needs. By the use
of these conventional technologies, the world also has a disability, with problems such as global
warming. Consumption of energy by man increased gradually as his wants also increase. The
conventional energy resources mainly include fossil fuels, but research shows that this fuel source will
be depleted completely in approximately 20 25 years. This could cause major setbacks around the
world. As a result, we need an alternative source of fuel that could keep the world running on its
wheel. One possibility is ethanol. Chemically extract ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ethanol fuel is clear and colorless, and most importantly, it originates from plants (Ethanol Fact
Book). Since it originates from plants almost anyone can help produce it.
Ethanol fuel is typically just made from plant biomass by pretreatment, fermentation, and distillation,
which is very much the same way that beer and liquors are produced.
The sugar beets and sugar cane are very good examples of these feed stocks that contain the sugar.
Corn contains starch that can easily be converted into the sugar that is needed. Even most of the trees
and grasses have cellulose that can be easily turned into sugar and then used in the making of ethanol
(Mukherjee 1 para 2).The ethanol process always starts by grinding up the feedstock which makes it
more quickly and easily processed.
Ethanol fuel has many positive features as an alternative to the use of liquid fuel. First, ethanol is
renewable. A relatively safe fuel would show very few engine changes. Second, its energy density is
much higher than with some of the other alternative fuels, such as methanol, which means there would
be less volume required to go the same distance. With the third benefit of ethanol, it would be able to
improve much of the agricultural economies by providing farmers with stable market crops, such as
maize and sugar beets, and with

coming to Los Angeles hoping for fame and fortune in his song, Californication. When Kiedis sings
And if you want these kind of dreams/ It s Californication, he is describing the lost dreams and false
promises associated with Los Angeles and the LA lifestyle. Even though Kiedis is living the life
people come to Los Angeles in search for, he has also experienced the loneliness and isolated feelings
that can be caused by the city. Kiedis went through tough times when he fights drug addiction, and has
to rebuild his life. Kiedis opens up about these feelings of loneliness in many of his songs, and one
example of this in in This Velvet Glove. Kiedis sings about himself as Someone who s been/ Sittin by

addiction that creates a serious feeling of loneliness and isolation when he loses everyone in his life.
Kiedis is singing about himself getting ready to inject Heroin, and he is lamenting on his vast array of

isolation that is created by his Los Angeles lifestyle. Kiedis isolation relates to Leonard Mead s
isolation while walking down the streets of Los Angeles. This is one example that proves Bradbury s

The Importance Of Puritan Values In American Society
The Puritan values, constructed in the seventeenth century, originated from a movement to reform the
Church of England. This particular movement still plays a vital role in the American society
influencing the social, ethical, and theological ideas of modern day citizens. These ideas that were put
forth were the starting point for the American culture offering new ideas of how to think and how to
live. The writers and thinkers of John Winthrop, Arthur Miller, and Benjamin Franklin make it
possible for people to study and apply these laws to their own lives hundreds of years after they were
introduced. Even though not all tenets are practiced as strongly as others, the concepts of the value of
hard work and a self reliant lifestyle still resonate in the hearts of many American individuals
hundreds of years after the birth of this Puritan lifestyle. Although there many examples of America
still following the values of a Puritan culture, the tenet in which America falls short is the practice of
living a holy life: piety. The value and importance of piety is shown thorough Arthur Miller s The
Crucible where a man named John Proctor goes from an honorable man to a shunned one when he is
found guilty of adultery and not knowing his 10 holy commandments. After his actions were revealed,
his name was blackened and he was no longer the respectable man the town once thought he was
(Miller 1171, 1231). Today, Americans get divorces, indulge in premarital sex, cheat, steal,

Air Masses Research Paper
Air Masses Air masses are large areas of air that are similar in moisture and temperature. They are
formed when the air sits over a surface for an extended period of time. Because they form over a
surface they take on characteristics of that surface. The five air mass types are continental polar (cP)
and tropical (cT), maritime polar (mP) and tropical (mT) as well as continental arctic (cA). All air
masses are commonly formed over flat land or large bodies of water, not both. They also formed in
areas with light wind. Once formed they move with the upper level winds. Continental polar air

Meteorologists use data initialization to create balance in the data presented to the model. Another
data anomaly is from data being collected away from the center of a grid. Numerical models use grids,
a three dimensional divide of the atmosphere, to make their forecasts. The middle of these grids is
called a grid point. Sometimes the data is not collected at this grid point but at another point in the
grid. To even out this data from different locations to use in forecast meteorologists use a process
called interpolation. Using interpolation and data initialization to balance data is a process called data
assimilation. Some of the methods used to check data include checking if a station always reports
wrong data, if the data deviates from what is expected through short term forecasts and checking the
data against other data observed near by. Of course they also check if the data falls out of any ranges
that are possible to be observed in that area. This data is then used in the numerical weather prediction
start point, which is in turn used to forecast weather. Recently data assimilation has become useful
with satellite data when surface observations are not

Analysis Of James Joyce s Araby
In the short story Araby, James Joyce provides the audience with a glimpse if 19th century Ireland
seen through the eyes of an adolescent young man. It is this adolescence and the navies of the world
that is under attack. Joyce masterfully reveals an innocence held by Araby by contrasting it with a
setting filled with symbology that eludes to the hopeless reality in which he lives. Joyce injects a sense
of unrealized bleakness for the protagonist by the imagery that he puts forth. North Richmond street,
being blind was a quiet street except for the hour... (Joyce 200), immediately sets the atmosphere as
one that is almost desolate, with iron gray clouds heavy with grief for the people below. The with the
ending phrase, except for the hour (Joyce 200), reinforces this feeling. Only one hour, where life and
movement grace this street but fleeting, like freshly minted snowflake landing on a cheek flushed with

The Cream Thermos At Starbucks
The cream thermos at Starbucks
It was Sunday morning, the first Sunday of spring in Greenville, SC.
I had just received and email containing a much awaited feedback. It was negative. I was
disappointed.
Oh well. Being an adult, I had no right to be so utterly distressed with every broken dream. I had a
husband to attend to, therefore I asked Alan if he would like to go out for breakfast.
In all honesty, if I merely intended to go on living, a radical change was in order. I just didn t know
where to start. Maybe going out for breakfast on a spring Sunday. Maybe stopping to write about my
constant failures and start focusing on success.
I could certainly tell you, that is, tell people outside the U.S., how stunning the beginning of
springtime in this country is. There are fresh strokes of color all over the place, as if a talented painter
had just woken up and put his hands to work. Nature. Maybe God. Uplifting, from every angle you
looked at it.
We drove to our favorite breakfast joint, a 5 minute drive from our house. House, not home. I hate this
house, Alan had just admitted. I was encouraged to agree. I hated it myself. We ve lived here too long.
The breakfast place was packed, it had a half hour wait. It might be too late for breakfast; or, on the
other hand, this was the exact time for people who went to church, a vast majority in this neck of the
woods, dubbed the Bible belt. Other restaurants would be packed as well, so we postponed coffee for
a while and

Essay Benefits Of Legalizing Marijuana
In America the fight over marijuana has been going on for years now. Twenty five states have
legalized marijuana for medical or recreational use. In the other half of the nation marijuana is a
schedule one drug alongside heroin and LSD, higher on the list than cocaine and meth. For being such
a dangerous drug, marijuana is used by over twenty million Americans. (Ingraham) Legalizing
marijuana has many benefits economically, medically, and recreationally. Pot is legal recreationally in
Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and the District of Columbia. Marijuana has many benefits
when used recreationally as well as for medical uses. A study in the journal Obesity found that regular
smokers are less likely to be obese than non smokers. Many people claim marijuana increases

Pot has been proven many times to treat epileptic seizures, decrease anxiety, and to slow the
progression of Alzheimer s disease. It s even been proven to prevent cancer from spreading. (Walsh)
Along with all the medical uses for it, it can loosen our dependency on other expensive pills and
treatments. There are many beneficial uses of marijuana but the government still lists it as a schedule
one drug and won t give it to people in need. There are many benefits of use recreationally and
medicinally. The legalization of marijuana in the U.S. would benefit our economy greatly. Washington
state brings in $500 million in tax revenues for marijuana. Colorado made over $5 million from pot
sales in 2011 alone. It s estimated that illegal marijuana is currently a $36 billion a year industry, if
that money was going into our government and nationwide funding it would be a tremendous benefit.
Not only is the marijuana business a gold mine, but the costs we would save from prison costs is
phenomenal. Inmates incarcerated on marijuana related charges cost U.S. prisons $1 billion annually.

The Life of Spanish Baroque Painter Martolome Esteban Murillo
On January 1st, 1618, Bartolome Esteban Murillo was born in Seville Spain. Murillo was the most
famous Spanish Baroque painter of his time, known for his religious works.
Murillo was the youngest of fourteen children, born to Gaspar Esteban, a barber, and María Perez .
Murillo gained his surname from a traditional Andalusian custom, taking the name of his grandmother,
Elvira Murillo. In 1627, Murillo s father passed away, and his mother died a year later. Murillo was an
orphan at ten years old, and was sent to live with his older sister and her husband.
Murillo was exposed to the art world from a young age. His uncle was a painter, who married the
daughter of another successful artist. All the daughters of this couple went on to marry ... Show more

Even despite this, the 1660 s were the busiest in Murillo s entire career. His portraits from this time are
some of his best,.
In 1680, Murillo was commissioned to paint the main altarpiece for the Capuchins church in Cádiz.
This was an incredible honor. While working up on a scaffold, Murillo fell and died soon after.
During his lifetime, Murillo left an incredible art legacy. His style has similarities from his teacher,
and Zurbarán, the most popular painter in Seville before himself. In his early years, Murillo painted in
the style known as Chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro is a style with strong contrast between light and dark.
Murillo used a lot of lighting techniques he learned from Zurbaran, but Murillo s works were lighter
and softer than Zurbaran. Overtime, Murillo stopped painting in Chiaroscuro, and his style evolved to
be lighter and more like the style of Federico Barocci. His trip to Madrid further changed his style,
encouraging him to use thick brushstrokes, warm tones, highlights, and richer color. In Murillo s late
life, his style changed again. Murillo used looser brush strokes, and sober colors. It is said that his
work during this time in his life was vaporous and more refined.
One of his more famous paintings is called The Young Beggar and is on display at the Musée du
Louvre, in Paris, France. This painting shows a sad beggar boy sitting alone on a street

Abstract
In this article, we evaluate the implications of the Children s Act 38 of 2005 for ukuthwala. Ukuthwala
is a practice whereby, preliminary to a customary marriage, a young man, by force, takes a girl to his
home. Questions arise relating to the impact of constitutional principles upon customary law and
practice. It is suggested that instead of a prohibitionist stance towards customs that seem to violate
human rights norms, a benign accommodation of aspects that promote the positive aspects of culture
be adopted. This approach leads to a conclusion that South African law should recognise those forms

unawares, but in many instances she is caught according to prior plan and agreement. In either case,
the girl will put up a show of resistance to suggest to onlookers that it is against her will, when in fact,

Arthur Dimmesdale s Guilt and Hypocrisy Essay
Arthur Dimmesdale s Guilt and Hypocrisy
By Ashlyn R. Thomas
In Nathaniel Hawthorne s gripping tale, The Scarlet Letter, a revered Puritan minister suffers from
cowardly guilt and hypocrisy after he commits adultery in this novel staged in the seventeenth century.
Arthur Dimmesdale, who hides himself in the shame of his lover, Hester
Prynne, protects his reputation among the Puritan people. The scaffold, a public symbol of disgrace,
contrasts with the pastor s silent sin of adultery. When Hester became a symbol of sin among the
people and wore the scarlet letter as punishment, Dimmesdale bears a sinner s masked mark in his
heart. As a result of his concealed sin, Dimmesdale suffers from guilt and hypocrisy. Over the course

Shrieking aloud like those suffering souls who turn away from the face of God, Dimmesdale felt little
relief from the iron chains of guilt and hypocrisy. Longing to free his guilty soul, Dimmesdale stood
on the scaffold imagining Hester s disgrace. Illustrating his inner conflicts, Dimmesdale had expressed
himself by screaming aloud.
Immediate horror encompassed him because he is afraid of being discovered by the town. Alone in the
abyss of darkness, upon the pedestal of shame, Dimmesdale found little relief in his private confession
in the second scaffold scene.
Finally, a few days later, Dimmesdale confesses his sin publicly in the third scaffold scene, showing
his repentance and thereby finding relief from guilt and hypocrisy. Allowing his sin to fester in his
heart for over seven years, Dimmesdale, now a dying man from sin, decided to ascend the scaffold.
Dimmesdale, understanding that he, a dying man, sought mercy and forgiveness, and climbed the
pedestal in guilty remorse. Ye that have loved me! ye, that have deemed me holy! behold me here, the
one sinner of the world! At last I stand upon the spot where seven years since, I should have stood! 3
Beckoning Hester and their child, Pearl, to his side, Dimmesdale s voice strengthened. As he
confesses, the people recognized Dimmesdale bore the same stigma that marked Hester. Dimmesdale
asks for forgiveness, therefore completing his

Rhetorical Analysis Of Brutus Vs. Wilkes Booth
Argumentative Essay: Brutus v. Wilkes Booth The assassinations of Julius Caesar and Abraham

Brutus, a noble Roman and dear friend of Caesar was drawn to the knife by his overwhelming
patriotism, while Booth, an actor and Confederate, was led by God . Both figures write about their
reasoning and manipulate rhetoric to convince the audiences that their acts were just. Their
manipulation of literary devices to persuade the people is compelling, but at the center of each

The men primarily use why and who in their writings. These questions are also the ones ringing in the
ears of the public, who mourn for their deceased heroes. Marcus Brutus and John Booth know this,

The two men take these questions and flip them on the public to make them question themselves and
the current opinion they have instead of thinking about attacking the speaker further. To make an
individual question the credibility of their own beliefs opens the door for persuasion, which is what
Booth and Brutus are relying on. Using this method to support an argument is fairly weak, and shows
the flaw that exists in murder for the right reasons . The speakers draw the focus away from themself

Analyzing The African Art Galleries On The Metropolitan...
This paper will be describing and analyzing the African Art Galleries in the Metropolitan Museum of
Art. The galleries that will be critiqued in this paper are 350, 351, and 352. Gallery 350 (Samuel H.
and Linda M. Lindenbaum Gallery) is an averaged size rectangular room that spans about the length
of a sidewalk. The gallery contains several carved wooden sculptures, primarily located in the center
of the gallery that immediately take over upon entering. While most objects are not enclosed in cases
and are instead freestanding, some works such as the Senufo Face Mask are not freestanding and are
supported by a wall in a case allowing for frontal viewing. The Bozo door has a slight relief and can
be viewed frontally as it hangs on the wall. Some freestanding works are displayed in cases that are
built into the walls of the gallery, which limits the individual s ability to view the work all the way
around. Though external lights bring some brightness into the gallery, they seem to add a muted sepia
tone to the room. In the cases against the walls, the lights are installed in the panels above the pieces
in order to provide an even distribution of light amongst all of the work. In the entire gallery, the lights
are scattered on the ceiling and angled in a way to provide light on each sculpture. The sculptures are
arranged in a geographical manner since most of the items are from the people of Mali and Côte D

Economic Thought Is The Most Confusing Chapter By Modern...
One of the most complicated concepts throughout the history of economic thought is the idea of the
measure of value. Therefore, it is no surprise Adam Smith s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of
the Wealth of Nations Chapter five, entitled Of the real and nominal Price of Commodities, or of their
Price in Labour, and their Price in Money , is considered the most confusing chapter by modern
economist. Smith attempts to explain the measure of value and the mechanisms, by which that value
fluctuates. Value, as defined by Smith, has two different meanings, and sometimes, expresses the
utility of some particular object, and sometimes the power of purchasing other goods which the
possession of that object conveys. He further clarifies these values as value in use and value in
exchange, defined as the value an individual receives from the use of a good and the value an
individual would pay for or would be willing to sell a good for, respectively. The chapter consist of
three main goals, Smith endeavored to show what is the real measure of this exchangeable value, what
are the real parts of which this real price is composed, and what are the different circumstances which
sometimes raise some or all of these different parts of price above, and sometimes sink them below
their natural or ordinary rate. Showing the real measure of an exchangeable value quickly proves
difficult. Smith is content to conclude, Labour, therefore, is the real measure of the

Analysis Of The Poem The Gospel Of Wealth
Dagan Martinez Dr. Amanda Bruce AMH2020 26 September 2014 Comparison, Analysis, and
Criticism of Economic Ideals in the Gilded Age In his essay, The Gospel of Wealth, Andrew Carnegie
argues that the imbalance of economic wealth is essential to the advancement of society. In days past,
there was little difference between the quality of life between a ruler and his subject. Alluding to a
time when Carnegie visited the chief of an indigenous American tribe, he observed that the Chief of
the Indians , who lived in a state of antiquity, tent was no different from even the poorest among the
tribe. Returning back to this stage of civilization would be detrimental to both the ruler and subject. Is
it better for all of us to live in poverty than for a few of us to have riches? Shouldn t those who prove
themselves masters in art and literature and those of higher intelligence have more than those with no
talent? This is the way society is progressing. Whether or not one actually believes that doesn t matter,
as changing the destiny of civilization is beyond one s power. (Carnegie, 28 29) It is better to improve
society through the construction public foundations such as museums and libraries rather than alms
giving. Through alms giving, one encourages laziness and vagrancy rather than integrity, and thus
damages society. Through public structures, one provides support for those who actually wish to
succeed can rise in society. Those who are most deserving of alms rarely need

Satire In Wizard Of Oz And A Modest Proposal
Satire has been a part of literature as long as there has been chaos in the world. Two of the most
famous satire pieces are The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and A Modest Proposal by Jonathan
Swift. Both author s lives can be directly tied to the theme of finding your way home in The Wizard of
Oz. The Wizard of Oz begins with Dorothy accidentally finding herself in the magical land of Oz after
a tornado blows her away. She immediately wants to leave and return to her home in Kansas. She
starts a journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who can supposedly grant her wish. Along the way she
meets several friends who want The Wizard to fix their problems as well. One of the infamous
characters was the Scarecrow. While resting on their travels to the Emerald City, Scarecrow asks
Dorothy why she wishes to return home when Oz is so beautiful. She replies with
No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there
than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home. (Baum, Chapter 4)
Dorothy thinks that she would be better off away from home before she even arrives in Oz, but as
soon as there is a chance that she may not be able to return, she misses it severely. Even though Oz is
whimsical and exciting, it just does not compare to her home. ... Show more content on

The Folk Through Three Decades
This essay, by Sija Tsai, demonstrates in a historical chronology how the WFF (Winnipeg Folk
Festival) changed its suggested definition of the folk through three decades. She explored this topic by
exploring media coverage and administrator beliefs on the subject of the folklore presence at these
festivals.
The festival was inaugurated in 1974 and was originally designated to celebrate Winnipeg s centenary.
However, with its success, the festival because an annual celebration of folk. At its beginnings, the
WFF featured mostly Anglo North American and Irish folk singers. the musical acts would feature
performances (often vocal) of traditional material (often ballads) and original material (often highly
politicized) by mostly young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The outcome of the pluralization of the WFF performances had mixed reviews. Some participants
thought that the festival was betraying their folk value due to the implementation of more popular and
world artist and others argued that it was a good change and that it supported a diversity acceptance
narrative. The pluralization of performances in the WFF s continued through the 1980 s and 1990 s.
During the 1990 s there was an apparent fusion of traditional and popular idioms which further blurred
the lines between its suggested binary. During the early 2000 there were questions addressing the
political issues of the program such as the apparent absence of aboriginal performances.
In conclusion, the change in performance seen in the last three decades of the WFF shows that the idea
of the folk is tangible and is subject to change. One of the principle reason that its definition changes
is because of the underlying idea that folk music is music which features exoticism from the normal
repertoire which constitutes a Canadian identity. Therefore, while in the 1970, the English ballads
were considered different, as the performance frequency of the English ballads were growing, its
integration into the Canadian sound/music identity was being solidified. Hence, the three decades of
folk festival shows that this continuous search for the exotic and fusion is due in part of a

  • 3. Underground Railroads And The Underground Railroad Underground railroads were a network of secret routes and safe houses used during the 19th century slaves from African descent that were in the United States, and wanted escape to the free states and Canada. The safe houses located on these routes were run by abolitionists and people that were sympathetic towards slaves. The Underground Railroad reached its height during the 1850s and 1860s. It s difficult to determine how many people actually traveled the routes and made it to freedom, but it is estimated that somewhere around 100,000 slaves journeyed along these paths. It is unfortunate however, that not many people of this 100,000 made it to freedom. There were just around 5,000 recorded cases of runaway slaves, and only about 1,000 a year made it to safety during the peak of this time. The lives of many slaves were horrendous during the early America s, so many of them sought refuge in the Underground Railroad where they dealt with even dirtier, more dangerous conditions. However, this helped thousands of slaves successfully reach freedom and helped create one of the biggest slave movements of the 1800s. How it all began. In 1786, George Washington complained one of his runaway slaves was helped by a society of Quakers, formed for such purposes. Before long, by 1831, the system grew into what is now the Underground Railroad. Many people think the Underground Railroad had something to do with paths that were once railroad tracks or something, but that is not the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Compare And Contrast The Valley Of Ashes In The Great Gatsby Imagine a world where one side of the equator was filled with wealth, happiness, and content. Now imagine the other side of the equator filled with poverty, sadness, and death. These two completely opposing halves enhance each other s descriptions and make one think of each side more deeply about the concept. This same scenario is also present in one of America s favorite novels based upon the 1920s and the American dream. In F. Scott Fitzgerald s novel, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald juxtaposes two contrasting places, the Valley of Ashes and New York City, using imagery to magnify the difference between reality and a fantasy, which is central to the meaning of the work. The Valley of Ashes is halfway between West Egg of Long Island and New York City. When one comes upon the Valley of Ashes, it is not what they see, but what they do not see: sunshine, colors, or a settling feeling. The Valley of Ashes is nothing but a dull location, filled with unsatisfied farmers, unsuccessful gardens, billowing smoke, and mounds of ashes that are prominent below the gray skies. Nick Carraway, the narrator of The Great Gatsby, describes the Valley of Ashes as ...a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air (Fitzgerald 23). Fitzgerald describes this location as unpleasant for those who enter and it is seen as a vulnerable place due to the billboard of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg looking upon the location at all times. This descriptive quote foreshadows that something bad will occur in this area during the novel. As for New York City, in the novel it is defined as the perfect place to live life to the fullest and not have a care of the world. As a reader, it is expected to envision this city full of lights as a bright, restless, and colorful place. Nick Carraway depicts New York City as a ...city rising up across the river in white heaps and sugar lumps all built with a wish out of non olfactory money. The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thus Crane Designs ensures your contractor is to given the correct information and expectations. 2. Contractors don t want architects on the job site All good contractors that I ve worked with are glad to have me around and call me often with questions, at the end of the day it s a collaborative effort. They respect me and I respect them. 3. They should be able to figure it out from the drawings Yes they are experienced enough and intelligent enough but drawings are interpretive and they often need confirmation from either the architect or home owner, to make sure they are understanding the complex aspects before money is spent. 4. • 6. Essay on Visual Acuity as a Function of Retinal Eccentricity Visual Acuity Measured as a Function of Retinal Eccentricity Visual acuity is a measure of an observer s ability to see fine spatial detail (Cavonius amp; Schumacher, 1966). There are a number of factors that affect visual acuity, such as illumination and contrast, and various ways to measure it (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). One way to measure visual acuity is through target detection which requires the perception of the orientation of a stimulus such as a Landolt C or a Snellen E (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). The participant in the current experiment was referred to have their acuity tested. Target detection of a stimulus was used to measure the participant s visual acuity as a function of retinal eccentricity of the target. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The height and width of this optotype is designed to be five times the thickness of the stroke width and gap width, therefore the size of each critical detail is 1/5th of the overall height (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). Four stimulus sizes were used in the experiment as visual acuity was to be tested at four eccentricities (0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚). These four stimulus sizes were calculated using the approximate minimum angle of resolution (MAR) of each eccentricity obtained from Millodot et al. s (1975) normal data. This value was then used to find the gap size and hence the stimulus size using a distance of 600cm. The reason for using the distance value of 600cm was because it is close to the threshold and therefore would be the starting point of stimulus presentation for each of the eccentricities. The formula used was: gap size = 600*tan(MAR˚) ˃˃ size = 5 (600*tan(MAR˚)) The stimulus sizes (and critical feature sizes) calculated and used for the eccentricities 0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚ were 0.9cm (0.18cm), 2.2cm (0.44cm), 6.13cm (1.23cm) and 17.5cm (3.5cm) respectively. Procedure As already stated, it was decided by the experimenter to test visual acuity at the following eccentricities: 0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚. Measuring the MAR at each of these eccentricities would give a good indication of where the participant s visual acuity measure lies in comparison to normal data. Exact vertical and horizontal ... • 7. A New Drug Development Process Introduction: A new drug development process starts with animal testing, before it is been tested in humans. These animal studies are designed to ensure that the drug is effective and safe in animals. Moreover, the results obtained should be reproducible. But even the reproducible results on animal studies cannot provide relevant prediction of the safe and effectiveness of a new drug. Scientists often stipulate the structural and physiological similarities between human and animals as a reason for performing animal testing and then relating or extrapolating the results for the first in human clinical testing, also known as Phase I clinical trials. Although, it is very clear that the human life expectancy is much higher compared to animals, because of the way things metabolize in human body, or to the environment a human body is exposed to or due to the minute genetic difference between human species and some other species. Also, diseases which are imposed by genetic engineering into the animals during animal studies differ significantly than the natural occurrence of a disease. Scientists are aware of these flaws that come with the use of animal model testing, like drugs that may be safe and effective in animals might not necessarily be safe and effective in humans. One such example is Thalidomide , which was used in 1950 s as a sedative product and was used to treat morning sickness of pregnant women. If their outermost shell is not full, atoms tend to gain, lose, or share electrons until the shell fills up. While doing this, atoms react and form chemical bonds with other atoms. Based on this, what can you infer about the reactivity of helium and neon? They are both noble gases so they are very resistant to a chemical reaction and don t react to other elements. 11. Think and discuss: Select the PERIODIC TABLE tab, and look at the second row, or period, of the table. How does this row reflect the subshells of the second shell? From the very beginning of The Overcoat, it becomes clear the story has a comedic nature. While explaining to the reader the touchiness of departments in Russia, Gogol gives the district police chief as an example: He plainly demonstrated that all the imperial institutions were going to the dogs, and that the Czar s sacred name was being taken in vain; and in proof he appended to the complain a romance, in which the district chief of police is made to appear about once in every ten pages, and sometimes in a downright drunken condition (Gogol 1). The scenario Gogol describes is one of absurdity. How could someone get so worked up over a book that has no intent of offending them? No normal person would ever become so hysterical over a piece of literature that indirectly offends them. Claiming that the whole political system of Russia is being destroyed and that royalty had been disgraced because of a simple character in a book that resembles oneself is preposterous. Ethanol Fuel Essay Well we all know that the energy system is very unstable because the total energy available on the earth is limited, and man has exploited all the conventional technologies to fulfill his needs. By the use of these conventional technologies, the world also has a disability, with problems such as global warming. Consumption of energy by man increased gradually as his wants also increase. The conventional energy resources mainly include fossil fuels, but research shows that this fuel source will be depleted completely in approximately 20 25 years. This could cause major setbacks around the world. As a result, we need an alternative source of fuel that could keep the world running on its wheel. One possibility is ethanol. Chemically extract ... Since it originates from plants almost anyone can help produce it. Ethanol fuel is typically just made from plant biomass by pretreatment, fermentation, and distillation, which is very much the same way that beer and liquors are produced. The sugar beets and sugar cane are very good examples of these feed stocks that contain the sugar. Corn contains starch that can easily be converted into the sugar that is needed. Even most of the trees and grasses have cellulose that can be easily turned into sugar and then used in the making of ethanol (Mukherjee 1 para 2).The ethanol process always starts by grinding up the feedstock which makes it more quickly and easily processed. Ethanol fuel has many positive features as an alternative to the use of liquid fuel. First, ethanol is renewable. A relatively safe fuel would show very few engine changes. Second, its energy density is much higher than with some of the other alternative fuels, such as methanol, which means there would be less volume required to go the same distance. With the third benefit of ethanol, it would be able to improve much of the agricultural economies by providing farmers with stable market crops, such as maize and sugar beets, and with ... • 17. The Importance Of Puritan Values In American Society The Puritan values, constructed in the seventeenth century, originated from a movement to reform the Church of England. This particular movement still plays a vital role in the American society influencing the social, ethical, and theological ideas of modern day citizens. These ideas that were put forth were the starting point for the American culture offering new ideas of how to think and how to live. The writers and thinkers of John Winthrop, Arthur Miller, and Benjamin Franklin make it possible for people to study and apply these laws to their own lives hundreds of years after they were introduced. Even though not all tenets are practiced as strongly as others, the concepts of the value of hard work and a self reliant lifestyle still resonate in the hearts of many American individuals hundreds of years after the birth of this Puritan lifestyle. Although there many examples of America still following the values of a Puritan culture, the tenet in which America falls short is the practice of living a holy life: piety. The value and importance of piety is shown thorough Arthur Miller s The Crucible where a man named John Proctor goes from an honorable man to a shunned one when he is found guilty of adultery and not knowing his 10 holy commandments. Joyce masterfully reveals an innocence held by Araby by contrasting it with a setting filled with symbology that eludes to the hopeless reality in which he lives. Joyce injects a sense of unrealized bleakness for the protagonist by the imagery that he puts forth. North Richmond street, being blind was a quiet street except for the hour... Murillo used a lot of lighting techniques he learned from Zurbaran, but Murillo s works were lighter and softer than Zurbaran. Overtime, Murillo stopped painting in Chiaroscuro, and his style evolved to be lighter and more like the style of Federico Barocci. His trip to Madrid further changed his style, encouraging him to use thick brushstrokes, warm tones, highlights, and richer color. In Murillo s late life, his style changed again. Murillo used looser brush strokes, and sober colors. It is said that his work during this time in his life was vaporous and more refined. One of his more famous paintings is called The Young Beggar and is on display at the Musée du Louvre, in Paris, France. This painting shows a sad beggar boy sitting alone on a street ... The scaffold, a public symbol of disgrace, contrasts with the pastor s silent sin of adultery. Longing to free his guilty soul, Dimmesdale stood on the scaffold imagining Hester s disgrace. Illustrating his inner conflicts, Dimmesdale had expressed himself by screaming aloud. Immediate horror encompassed him because he is afraid of being discovered by the town. Alone in the abyss of darkness, upon the pedestal of shame, Dimmesdale found little relief in his private confession in the second scaffold scene. Finally, a few days later, Dimmesdale confesses his sin publicly in the third scaffold scene, showing his repentance and thereby finding relief from guilt and hypocrisy. Allowing his sin to fester in his heart for over seven years, Dimmesdale, now a dying man from sin, decided to ascend the scaffold. Dimmesdale, understanding that he, a dying man, sought mercy and forgiveness, and climbed the pedestal in guilty remorse. Ye that have loved me! ye, that have deemed me holy! behold me here, the one sinner of the world! At last I stand upon the spot where seven years since, I should have stood! 3 Beckoning Hester and their child, Pearl, to his side, Dimmesdale s voice strengthened. • 30. Analyzing The African Art Galleries On The Metropolitan... This paper will be describing and analyzing the African Art Galleries in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The galleries that will be critiqued in this paper are 350, 351, and 352. Gallery 350 (Samuel H. and Linda M. Lindenbaum Gallery) is an averaged size rectangular room that spans about the length of a sidewalk. The gallery contains several carved wooden sculptures, primarily located in the center of the gallery that immediately take over upon entering. While most objects are not enclosed in cases and are instead freestanding, some works such as the Senufo Face Mask are not freestanding and are supported by a wall in a case allowing for frontal viewing. The Bozo door has a slight relief and can be viewed frontally as it hangs on the wall. Some freestanding works are displayed in cases that are built into the walls of the gallery, which limits the individual s ability to view the work all the way around. Though external lights bring some brightness into the gallery, they seem to add a muted sepia tone to the room. In the cases against the walls, the lights are installed in the panels above the pieces in order to provide an even distribution of light amongst all of the work. In the entire gallery, the lights are scattered on the ceiling and angled in a way to provide light on each sculpture. The sculptures are arranged in a geographical manner since most of the items are from the people of Mali and Côte D ivoire . In this gallery, the pieces are also grouped in a ... • 33. Economic Thought Is The Most Confusing Chapter By Modern... One of the most complicated concepts throughout the history of economic thought is the idea of the measure of value. Therefore, it is no surprise Adam Smith s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations Chapter five, entitled Of the real and nominal Price of Commodities, or of their Price in Labour, and their Price in Money , is considered the most confusing chapter by modern economist. Smith attempts to explain the measure of value and the mechanisms, by which that value fluctuates. Value, as defined by Smith, has two different meanings, and sometimes, expresses the utility of some particular object, and sometimes the power of purchasing other goods which the possession of that object conveys. He further clarifies these values as value in use and value in exchange, defined as the value an individual receives from the use of a good and the value an individual would pay for or would be willing to sell a good for, respectively. The chapter consist of three main goals, Smith endeavored to show what is the real measure of this exchangeable value, what are the real parts of which this real price is composed, and what are the different circumstances which sometimes raise some or all of these different parts of price above, and sometimes sink them below their natural or ordinary rate. Showing the real measure of an exchangeable value quickly proves difficult. Smith is content to conclude, Labour, therefore, is the real measure of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Poem The Gospel Of Wealth Dagan Martinez Dr. Amanda Bruce AMH2020 26 September 2014 Comparison, Analysis, and Criticism of Economic Ideals in the Gilded Age In his essay, The Gospel of Wealth, Andrew Carnegie argues that the imbalance of economic wealth is essential to the advancement of society. In days past, there was little difference between the quality of life between a ruler and his subject. Alluding to a time when Carnegie visited the chief of an indigenous American tribe, he observed that the Chief of the Indians , who lived in a state of antiquity, tent was no different from even the poorest among the tribe. Returning back to this stage of civilization would be detrimental to both the ruler and subject. Is it better for all of us to live in poverty than for a few of us to have riches? Shouldn t those who prove themselves masters in art and literature and those of higher intelligence have more than those with no talent? This is the way society is progressing. Whether or not one actually believes that doesn t matter, as changing the destiny of civilization is beyond one s power. (Carnegie, 28 29) It is better to improve society through the construction public foundations such as museums and libraries rather than alms giving. Through alms giving, one encourages laziness and vagrancy rather than integrity, and thus damages society. Through public structures, one provides support for those who actually wish to succeed can rise in society. Those who are most deserving of alms rarely need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(Baum, Chapter 4) Dorothy thinks that she would be better off away from home before she even arrives in Oz, but as soon as there is a chance that she may not be able to return, she misses it severely. The festival was inaugurated in 1974 and was originally designated to celebrate Winnipeg s centenary. However, with its success, the festival because an annual celebration of folk. Some participants thought that the festival was betraying their folk value due to the implementation of more popular and world artist and others argued that it was a good change and that it supported a diversity acceptance narrative. The pluralization of performances in the WFF s continued through the 1980 s and 1990 s. During the 1990 s there was an apparent fusion of traditional and popular idioms which further blurred the lines between its suggested binary. During the early 2000 there were questions addressing the political issues of the program such as the apparent absence of aboriginal performances. In conclusion, the change in performance seen in the last three decades of the WFF shows that the idea of the folk is tangible and is subject to change. One of the principle reason that its definition changes is because of the underlying idea that folk music is music which features exoticism from the normal repertoire which constitutes a Canadian identity. Therefore, while in the 1970, the English ballads were considered different, as the performance frequency of the English ballads were growing, its integration into the Canadian sound/music identity was being solidified. Hence, the three decades of folk festival shows that this continuous search for the exotic and fusion is due in part of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
