Behaviorism And The Operant Conditioning Theory Essay
It is a fact that people learn differently. Some people learn by seeing, some by hearing, some by doing,
and then others learn from a combination of these. For many decades psychologists, theorists, and
scientists have all sought to prove to their peers, society and the world that not only do people learn
differently but children and adult learning differ also. Learning theories are conceptualized
frameworks which describe how individuals absorb, process and retain information. Behaviorists such
as John B. Watson, B.F. Skinner, Edward L. Thorndike, Ivan Pavlov and Edwin R. Guthrie believed
that all learners were passive in nature and only responded to external stimuli. Behaviorism, as
explored by the before mentioned, is a biological basis of learning and focuses exclusively on
observable behaviors. This includes Thorndike s theory of connectionism, Pavlov s classical
conditioning and the well known conditioning theory from Skinner the operant conditioning model.
However, many researchers did not like the one size fits all explanation of behaviorism. Cognitivism
grew in response to behaviorism in an effort to better understand the mental processes behind learning.
This challenged behaviorism with the idea that learning is the process of connecting symbols in a
meaningful way; thus all knowledge is stored cognitively as symbols. Still, cognitivism didn t account
for individuality and the input output model was seen as very mechanic. The social cognitive theory
was developed

Football Mascot Analysis
Sweat dripping down from faces, nasty pads being thrown out and replaced along with the ripped
pants. The smell of cleats reeking along with the molded mouth guards and practice jerseys. This is
what is known as the first day of football tryouts. All the little ones gather around their friends eager
like it is Christmas morning ready to be running around and hitting people. Each one brought up to
know the nothing but live, breathe, sleep lifestyle of football. But not everyone knows that lifestyle.
There is that one kid who is left out and ends up being the mascot every year keeping his teammates
positive and happy while occasionally bringing them water when needed. The players seem to always
ask him, Why can t you play? And his only explanation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After consulting, the coach found out his reasoning being, when he played as a child, they did not
have all the gear to entirely be safe and this worried the dad that the same thing would happen to his
son. But because football has changed and teaches kids to stay in shape and learn life skills such as
sportsmanship, hard work, discipline, and teamwork, parents should take the risk and let their kids
play the game.
By participating in football people can learn sportsmanship, hard work, discipline, and teamwork.
Considering the many lessons it teaches, teamwork and discipline play the main role. With teamwork,
players/children are learning how to trust their teammates the more experience they have with each
other. As for discipline, it teaches kids to work hard and set good goals which can be helpful for them
in the future as opposed to not playing, and being a step behind. NFL expert Jobe Lewis says that
football requires a pretty unique brand of teamwork and requires the player to discipline himself and
to work hard (Lewis 1).

Google Employee Incentives
Introduction
There are very few companies in the world that are successful in two realms: its personnel realm and
the business realm. It has become common knowledge that Google s employees love working at
Google. They don t simply like it, they love it. Many of Google s employees are computer
programmers and coders, and it takes more than money to both motivate them and keep them content.
Google s original campus in Mountain View, California, otherwise known as GooglePlex, offers
employees everything they may need or want and more leaving them with little reason to go home at
all. It is abundantly clear that this costly approach has paid huge dividends to Google.
Google s very public relationship with its employees has been a ... Show more content on

The reality is, Google offers even more to its employees. In November 1999, Google hired its first full
time chef, Charlie Ayers, who was previously the chef for the Grateful Dead. Ayers won a cook off
competition with other contestants and what was then 40 employees chose him. Google now has over
30,000 employees around the globe.
According to Jordan Newman, a Google spokesman, Google s goal is to create the happiest, most
productive workplace in the world. In order to do so, it has created a workplace where there are
massages, on site dry cleaning, yoga classes, gourmet cafes, daycare, transportation services, car wash
and oil changes, foreign language classes, and health care facilities all for free. This doesn t include
the Lego play rooms, TGIF drinking days, secret rooms behind bookcases, and couches that consist of
rowboats with cushions.
This also doesn t scratch the surface of what is likely the most envied element of engineers jobs at
Google: the 20% rule. This rule requires that engineers spend 20% of their time or one day each week
on any project that he or she chooses. In fact, Gmail was created in the twenty percent time, and it
took years of convincing to get Google to go through with it, only because they were afraid of
stretching themselves too thin and extending themselves into areas that they were not previously
focused on. Clearly though, they bought into it in the end, and it worked.
However, make no mistake: Google

Good Corporate Social Responsibility Is Good For Business
Good Corporate Social Responsibility is Good for Business
Introduction
Many companies question whether positive acts of corporate social responsibility are beneficial to the
organization s profitability or simply cost the company money. Although practicing good corporate
social responsibility can be expensive at times, the benefits and positive outcomes outweigh the costs
spent. Among many other positive outcomes, acts of corporate social responsibility have the ability to
increase investor relations, can benefit a company s long term image, and can lead to the development
of new products. Thus, good corporate social responsibility is very good for business.
Investor Relations Investors are an essential part of any company or ... Show more content on

Long Term Image When companies perform good deeds such as charitable and philanthropic work
within the communities it serves, consumers take notice. Such engagement in the community gives a
company a competitive advantage over their competitors in the industry. Social responsibility can
make one company stand apart from the rest. Consumers appreciate it when their favorite brands
support their community. Consumers may also frequent a company and purchase its products because
of its socially responsible activities. Companies that target the everyday consumer, not an industry or
government, have greater incentive to appear charitable in order to increase demand for their products
(Lev, Petrovits, Radhakrishnan, 2010). There is a correlation between the company s perceived image
and the demand for the company s products. Consumers like to support companies that act positively
in the community because the consumer in turn feels like they (in turn) are supporting the community.
People generally want to be good neighbors and support causes that help the world, and if a company
has a well known reputation of helping others, the consumer may be more likely to support that
specific organization over a competitor. Consumers are more likely to support products and
organizations that go above and beyond for the greater good, and that would thus drive

Adam Turner Smart Home Technology
Even though the home of the future will bring many benefits to consumers, owning home appliances
connected to the internet may pose a security risk. In an article by Adam Turner, titled Smart
technology may make your home a net target , Turner explains the dangers of using smart home
devices. How do these dangers affect smart home technology? To explain the issues, Turner relays the
knowledge of AVG security adviser Michael McKinnon. Mckinnon claims that people use most of
these devices to access files remotely, giving hackers the opportunity to breach them. After a hacker
gains access to a home s internal network, they can then collect passwords and financial information
(Turner 1). The essence of Turner s argument is that by using internet connected smart home
technology, hackers have an easier means of accessing sensitive information.
However, as home technology advances, security measures are advancing as well. Michael
Passingham s article titled The Norton Core is a crazy looking, ultra secure router presents a new line
of defense against home hackers. Passingham states:
Symantec says the Core will be constantly updated with a huge database of smart home devices and
will automatically quarantine any device that s running firmware known to be a security risk. You ll ...

Taking a Look at the Kashmir Conflict
INTRODUCTION
The Kashmir Conflict has been an ongoing battle between India and Pakistan for decades. At its very
basis, it is a territorial dispute between the governments of India and Pakistan and Kashmiri insurgent
groups over control of the region of Kashmir. However, at it s core it is religious quarrel that has been
affected by the presence of nuclear weapons and the desire for local autonomy. The potential for peace
is a topic still widely debated and rarely agreed upon by scholars. Through the decades long conflict
and continuous disaccord between India and Pakistan, the path to peace is paved solely by the
Kashmiri people and their desires for their future, and with the resolution of this conflict, India and
Pakistan may finally be able to contain the forces of communalism and religious extremism that has
plagued them for decades.
BACKGROUND
The Kashmir conflict arose from the partition of the Indian sub continent along religious lines, which
led to the formation of India and Pakistan. However, 650 states, run by princes, still existed within the
two newly independent countries in which the princes had to decide which country to join or if they
would remain independent. Due to its location, Kashmir, and its ruler Maharaja Hari Singh, could
choose to join either India or Pakistan. Unable to decide which nation to join, Hari Singh chose to
remain neutral. Nevertheless, in October 1947, the Kashmir conflict officially began with the Pakistani
invasion of Kashmir and

Mendel Grossman was the most well known photographer from the Lodz Ghetto. From the book, With
a Camera in the Ghetto, it tells about a resisting photographer that secretly takes photos of the
everyday life in the Lodz Ghetto. There were many photographers at the time, but Mendel Grossman
was the most well known of them all. Mendel Grossman was a Jewish photographer in the Lodz
Ghetto, born in 1913. He was a slim man of less than average height with sloping shoulders, his coat
hanging on him as if it were not cut to his size, even his shoes appearing too large for him. His eyes
expressed goodness, a clever smile played on his lips, his steps were measured, and he always carried

gained a measure of respect, and Mendel achieved recognition as an artist and photographer. In the
beginning of 1939, the management of TOZ, the Jewish organization for the protection of children s
health, approached him with an attractive proposition to prepare an album of pictures of Jewish
children. The accent was to be on the poor Jewish child in the streets. Mendel enthusiastically
accepted the proposition and was soon ready with a series of photographs. It was the summer of 1939,

Battle Of The Yarmuk Essay
The early Islamic Empire expanded through military conquest, respect, and bribery. In Battle of the
Yarmuk by Al Biladuri, it says, In this battle 24,000 Muslims took part. By Allah s help, some 70,000
of them [the Greeks] were put to death. The Muslims fought the Greeks violently and showed us how
they were able to conquer new land by military conquest. The Muslims had fought as one with each
other to protect themselves and expand their empire. In the Treaty of Tudmir , it was a treaty between
Abd al Aziz, the commander of the Muslim forces, and Theodemir, who is the Christian king of a
region in Southern Spain. Abd al Aziz wanted a non violent, peaceful agreement with Theodemir.
According to the treaty, it states, His followers will not be killed or taken prisoner, nor will they be
separated from their women and children. They will not be coerced in matters of religion, their
churches will not be burned, nor will sacred objects be taken from the realm. This shows that this
treaty enabled the empire to show respect for Spain, to continue building on, and to expand their
empire. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Herodotus Biography
Herodotus an Ancient Greek writer and geographer wrote The Histories, around 425 B.C., which told
of the Greco Persian Wars. He is considered the first historian and is known as the father of history . In
431 B.C. Thucydides, an Athenian historian, wrote History of the Peloponnesian War. His work
accounted the war between Sparta and Athens. Philosophy of History was first offered during the
Medieval period by theologian, St. Augustine. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, developed the dialectic
in the 1800s. In the 19th century, Leopold von Ranke introduces the empirical approach to history
through the development of seminar method and archival research methods.

when G. Stanley Hall opened a lab at John Hopkins University. In addition to this, in 1892 he
develops the American Psychological Association (APA) and later founds the American Journal of
Psychology (1887) and Journal of Applied Psychology (1917). William James develops the theory of
Functionalism in the 19th century which focuses on acts and functions of the mind (consciousness).
Sigmund Freud introduces Psychoanalysis in 1896. He concludes that powerful unconscious drives

Also in 1896, Structuralism (focused on the contents of the mind) develops and is introduced to the
U.S. in a 1901 publication by Edward Titchener, Manual of Experimental Psychology. In the year
1900, Sigmund Freud s theory The Interpretation of Dreams is published. Mary Calkins is the first
elected woman president of the APA in 1904. She was however, denied her Ph.D. after studying at

The Culture of the 1950s
Lights flash. Rock n roll pours out of a jukebox like an overflowing river. The aroma of burgers being
served to the tables fill the air. This is a common scene one would experience in the 1950s. When one
thinks of the 1950s, they are most likely thinking about the culture of America during these 10 years.
The 1950s, following a time of strife (World War II), sparked America s eagerness to start enjoying
life; the fashion, technology, advertisement, entertainment, and music defined this decade above all
else. What one wears is a huge part in any culture, and the fashion of this decade definitely was. The

The Real-Life Counterparts of 1984 s Oceania Essay
Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin are household names, but what about the more obscure individuals
Muammar Qaddafi, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong un? George Orwell used 1984 as a prediction of what
could happen if the fascism in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia persisted. The dystopian, fascist
government that exists in 1984 resembles the governments in the real life, modern day countries of
Libya, China, and North Korea. The government in Orwell s Oceania is fascist, causing citizens like
Winston and Julia to hate the government. O Brien explains the future of Oceania s government to
Winston, when he says: If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face

In the following passage, O Brien explains the comparison between Oceania s government and the
governments of the past that resemble theirs, We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in
that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards
and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their
methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives (Orwell 236). O Brien says
that what differentiates Big Brother from the Nazis is that Big Brother knows its intent. Paraphrasing
what O Brien tries to convey, it can be stated that even though the Nazis killed millions of innocent
civilians, as did the Russian communists, they were not as horrible as Big Brother because they did
not understand that they were wrong. O Brien states that Big Brother has cupidity for power and no
other motivation to be fascist. To compare, in the book Libya and Qaddafi by Don Lawson, Lawson
says of Qaddafi: Today there is little doubt in most Western observers minds that Qaddafi is very
much his own person, taking orders from no one and wanting only what he believes best for his
country. This, of course, can be an admirable quality. But it can have a dark side as well. Adolf Hitler
was also his own person and a fierce nationalist, but the methods he used to attain his goals resulted

How Technology Has Broadened The Spectrum Of Applications
4. EMERGING DEVICES
The continuous scaling of CMOS technology has broadened the spectrum of applications. Complex
architectures can be now realized on a single chip. The integration of existing and new technologies
with CMOS extends the scope of implementation.
Figure 3 : Relationship among More Moore, More than Moore, and Beyond CMOS
4.1 More than Moore
The functional diversification of the semiconductor based devices by non digital components is More
than Moore implementation. These non digital functionalities may not scale at the same rate as the
digital components. The non digital components are capable of interacting with outside world through
sensors and actuators. This integration of functions like analog and mixed signal processing, addition
of passive, power components and bio chips increases the range of applications such as
communications, automotive, biomedical and security. As integration grows so does the challenges, it
demands the need for multidisciplinary research programs to run in pace with growing scientific
fields.
4.2 More Moore
The expansion of the CMOS by conventional dimensional scaling to reduce the cost per function and
improved performance is More Moore. This also comes with resource scarcity such as power
availability and reduced flexibility in interconnects. Power dissipation becomes a critical problem in
such devices due to large logic circuits. Since the battery capacity has not improved much but the
amount of logic in SoC almost doubles

Epicureanism is a philosophy based on the teachings of the Greek philosopher Epicuris. His views
coincide with those of Heisenberg in the way that they display the incertitude of how it is impossible
to know exactly what things will do or go. In example, he suggested that even atoms are free to move
around spontaneously, without order. Any invention or its inventor would fit nicely into this cultural
topic. Eli Whitney, for instance, and the cotton gin. This invention was one of the most important, it
created a very substantial movement in history. Whitney used scientific knowledge to produce a

passion, and that if women were not controlled by the practical reasoning men, that disastrous
consequences would occur. The male prevalence in this civilization was evident in all perspectives of
life including the arts that were created during this time period. For instance, the women were
portrayed as clothed, mysterious, and deviant looking and the men as nude, perfected, and

Research Paper On The Storming Of The Bastille
What was the Storming of the Bastille?
The Bastille was a medieval fortress located in the east of Paris. It was built in the 14th century to
guard the entrance to Paris. It had eight towers linked with walls, all 100 feet high. A moat that was
more than eighty feet wide surrounded the fortress. During the 17th and 18th century, the Bastille was
used as a prison for those who were thought to doubt the government and its power. The Storming of
Bastille took place on July 14, 1789. A large mob of Parisians, mainly consisting of craftsmen and
salesmen, marched to the tower in search of weapons and prisoners. The crowd, however, did not
impress the few guards on duty at that time. Some representatives of the mob were allowed to be let

that would key many more acts of violence during this time. The Storming of Bastille signaled the

Preparing Your Family for an Orphanage Visit: Is Your Child Ready? C h e c klis t A d vic e f r o m T

An orphanage visit can be a beneficial event for an adoptee, providing a link to personal history and a

experience, filled with anxiety and shock over what abandonment and institutionalization really mean.
As Jane Liedtke stressed in P r e p a rin g f o r a H o m ela n d Visit , an orphanage visit should be

Essay on Augustus Caesar
Augustus Caesar
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian as he was called until the adoption by
Caesar, later called Augustus Caesar) was born 23 September, 63 BC. Augustus was the grand nephew
of Julius Caesar and later became his heir after he learned that his grand uncle had adopted him.
Augustus Caesar was with out a doubt the greatest political leader in the Roman Empire. He made
Rome what think of it as and what we study today. Octavian s first public appearance was in 51 BC
when he delivered his grandmother s eulogy. In 48 BC he started his political career when he was
elected to pontifical college. In 45 BC he went with Caesar to Spain and in 44 BC when Caesar was

They fought a fierce naval battle with all sorts of ships. In
September Octavian had managed to blockade Antony and Cleopatra s ships. Attempting to break free,
Antony lost the battle but he and Cleopatra managed to flee the battle early and went to Egypt. The
next year Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide and Octavian annexed
Egypt as a province. Octavian was now in command of the entire Roman Empire.
Octavian knew that he needed to reform the government because the old way was not working any
longer. He managed to give land to 100,000 veterans and paid the original landowners Egyptian
money. He also formed a permanent army and navy which swore allegiance to him. Octavian elected
himself consul, but in 27 BC offered to lay down his powers, but the Senate disapproved and urged
him to continue. They awarded him the title of Augustus, which means Exalted or Majestic One. From
then on he was referred to as Augustus Caesar. Augustus also became the tribune and received power
for life and became the protector of the Roman people. His backbone of his power was his army but
he didn t keep the majority of his army in Italy though for fear that generals and senators may ally and
stage a revolt. Augustus had 28 legions totaling approximately 400,000 men which he placed around
the borders to keep barbaric warriors from entering. In following years Augustus received many
significant privileges and honors.

Permo-Triassic Mass Extinction Essay
The Permo Triassic mass extinction: what died out
LIFE IN THE SEA
Fusulinid foraminifera disappeared completely, although other foram groups suffered much lower
levels of extinction. Palaeozoic corals (Rugosa and Tabulata) also vanished. Stenolaemate bryozoans
and articulate brachiopods suffered near complete extinction. The extant echinoderm groups all

Stanomat will issue a note to Kesser payable over four years for $20 million with interest 1.5 percent
above prime. During the period of the note Stanomat will acquire unissued shares of Kesser and upon
complete payment of the note Stanomat will own 100 percent of the subsidiary. At 55 percent of
ownership, Stanomat will record its investment at 100 percent ownership. We do not believe it is
appropriate for Stanomat to record its investment in Kesser based on the 100 percent ownership that it
has committed to purchase. Stanomat will use the equity method to account for its investment in
Kesser and prepare consolidated financial statements since it owns more than 50 percent of the
company. However, in order to accurately reflect its share of Kesser s assets and income, it should
only record and report the portion that it is entitled to. FASB Statement 141R requires an acquirer to

Using Alternative Energy Sources in the United States
Using Alternative Energy Sources in the U.S. The United States has many directions to choose from in
the oncoming future of energy. Options for the world s energy future may include surprises, thanks to
innovative research under way around the world (LePoire 1). History has shown that surprises can
change generations . Since the mid 1900 s, experts have been conducting research on the way our
nation has been using energy. The United States have relied on other countries to gain knowledge with
their energy sources. China is one huge partner that helps them out a lot. They have experimented with

decrease dependence on fossil fuels, protect lives and the environment, and provide science based

My Microteaching Lessons
My lessons were organized similarly in an I Do, We Do, You Do format. While they both had some
form of transition and flow, Microteaching 1 was not as smooth as my second Microteaching. The first
Microteaching had multiple sets of manipulatives and a worksheet to hand out. While these things
were all important to the lesson they could have been implemented with a better flow. Before the
lesson, I had organized everything into groups and set it up at the front table and I knew when I
needed each manipulative. The content delivery and activities would flow smoothly but there would
seem to be a break every time where learning stopped. This interrupted the learning, flow, and

beneficial to show multiple pictographs so that students can find similarities and differences in them.
This will help students understand what their pictographs need to include and what changes from
graph to graph. Another change that I would make is to use data from our classroom. The data that I
used in the lesson was data that I made up or found online. I think that adding data from our classroom

The Fives System
The FiveS system, also known as the 5S, is a organization system created at first for production
systems and then adapted by western managers for the workplace. Hiroyuki Hirano developed the
system in Japan and it is believed it lead to the very popular Just in time (JIT) manufacturing. For
example, major brands like Toyota have been using this system successfully for years. 5S is based on
the phrase a place for everything and everything in its place. (Byrne) Meaning that the workplace
should have everything you need, when you need it. In the workplace, it is believed that the
environment is key into the employee s behaviors. For example, if your mind is clear and you don t

In my experience as a student, I learned that organization and order are essential for me to achieve my
goals and getting everything done on time. Without a clean organized desk, I can t do my assignments
as fast and efficient as I would if it was. That is because I will waste time cleaning and finding
resources and also I will be paying attention to other things that I shouldn t. In any organization, the
principle is the same because we have the same human behavior. Based on that, it is clear that
implementing the 5S system is very positive for organizations and it is a key concept in organizational
behavior. Pillars The FiveS system is based on five pillars mentioned above. It is important to know
that the system is cyclical, meaning every step follows another and has to be done in the right order
for it to work. Figure 1 shows a good diagram of how the system works and how the last S, sustain,

improvement of the organization s workplace. The first pillar, called Sort, relates to elimination of
everything in the workplace that is unnecessary to the employee s tasks. This will create opening of

down employee tasks. There are several methods to achieve this, the most popular being red tagging .

Iago By William Shakespeare s Othello
Iago is able to manipulate different characters throughout Othello by appearing to be honest and
trustworthy, and using this to make people believe what he is saying is the truth. This means that Iago
can tell them what he wants, in order to achieve whatever he desires. Simply, Iago is a two faced
character. A very ironic part of the play is when Iago says, By Janus , as Janus is a two faced Roman
god.
The first person/character is Rodrigo. Rodrigo is blinded by his love for Desdemona and is prepared to
try anything to win her heart. This makes him an easy target for Iago, as Rodrigo will do anything to
get what he wants, Desdemona. Rodrigo is initially upset with Iago, as he has paid Iago to encourage a
marriage between him and Desdemona, but instead Desdemona had married Othello. However, Iago
easily restores Rodrigo s faith in him by saying his hatred for Othello he says with erratic words, like
despise me, I do not when Rodrigo asks if he hates Othello. Rodrigo is used for his money, Iago tells
his him repeatedly to put money in thy purse . Even when Rodrigo threatens Iago, assure yourself I
will seek satisfaction of you (Scene four), he doesn t have the necessary the mindset and power to
back up his threats, and instead is convinced by Iago to murder Cassio by knocking out his brains .
However, Iago intents Rodrigo, as well as Cassio to live Rodrigo . To make sure of this he stabs

Homeless people who look clean and neat are usually truly homeless and in need of genuine help
because they are taking advantage of programs that want to help them such as Charities and churches.
Some of the dirty homeless people will actually reject help. The drug addicts will reject a sandwich if
offered to them because they want the money instead. Remember the homeless guy from Scary Movie
that said, I said a dollar, bitch! and tossed the sandwich back at the main character? Some dirty
homeless people are really like that. As stated earlier, homeless people ,of course, are humans, so they
have human ways. They could be very picky eaters and will ask that you buy them certain foods. I
knew some homeless people who were vegetarians! I was one. There are also soup kitchen and food
pantries if you need something quick and free to eat. You can recognize a homeless person based on
the clothes they wear. A laborer would typically wear dirty clothes, which is normal, however, if you
see a person who is wearing dirty clothing with obvious dried up stains that haven t been washed out
in months then they might be a homeless person. Some homeless people don t go to the laundromat

Colorism-Skin Tone Discrimination In The Makeup Industry...
For decades, makeup companies have treated foundation shades like a high end, exclusive VIP club
that women of color cannot get into. Representation in the beauty industry is a continued issue that no
makeup company can seem to get right. While the spectrum of foundation shades have widen, the
makeup counter has not changed much. There is a major misunderstanding between makeup industries
and women of color. This is a result of the lack of understanding of the needs of the diverse consumer.
There is an absence of knowledge and empathy for others that are not white. When we consider these
factors we have to think about the creators of these products. Often times they do not look like us, so
how can we expect for them to meet our needs. This form of discrimination can place a direct
discouragement on women of color s self esteem. This exclusion in an attempt to purchase foundation
for their skin tone is what race relation s specialist, Nadra Kareem Nittle calls colorism. In her article
What Is Colorism Skin Tone Discrimination in America, she describes colorism as the disadvantage
dark skinned people face, while privileging those with lighter skin. Colorism is rooted in slavery, as
slave owners typically gave preferential treatment to slaves with fairer skin complexions, while dark
skinned slaves faced harsher mistreatment out in the fields. Makeup companies favor their white
counterparts, often only providing a few shades that do not meet the needs of women of color.

Top Of The Food Chain By T. C. Boyle
In the wild, there are food chains. In human society, there are social structures. Within that structure,
the U.S.A stands as the largest predator, the unbeatable force, much like a lion would be in the jungle.
However, does this superiority give us the right to mess with members in the lower half? This issue is
discussed in a short story by T.C Boyle, called Top of the Food Chain. The main argument in T.C
Boyle s story is stronger people trying to fix weaker people s problems can lead to even greater
problems. Boyle s argument that superiority does not always solve problems can be further seen
through his use of ethos. In the essay, the narrator is constantly describing how the people of Borneo

A Comparison OfThe Electric Koolaid Acid Test By Leslie...
For my IOP I will be comparing the novels The Electric Koolaid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe and
Ceremony by Leslie Silko. In this comparison I will be analyzing how these author s writing styles
portray the character development in Silko s main character Tayo, and the minor characters which
Wolfe documented. In both pieces, the reader can see that the characters are presented either internal
or external conflicts, and sometimes both, that shape their realities as well as affect the decisions they
make. In order to convey this character progression, both Silko and Wolfe illustrate the ways that their
characters gain their acceptance of their social standings in society, and more importantly in
themselves and what they believe, through the use of fragmented writing styles as well as the
inclusion of flashbacks and poems. Before I analyze these author s writing styles, I want to point out
the different obstacles that these characters are facing.
In The Electric Koolaid Acid Test the Pranksters are subjected to society s judgement as they try to
achieve their goal of challenging societal norms through the use of taking drugs as an act of defiance
to these standards. [change slide] The conformity that they are fighting is the influences that are

Thank you for taking the time to listen to me, as I am sure you have other things on your plate. As you

negatives. It comes down to being fearless or afraid. Liberation for the oppressed people must be

Her guilt is the unfinished emotion, the emotion she has not accepted or coped with and the only way

could give her guidance or have a sit down with Emily and let her know how she feels, or maybe she
could invest in a notebook and write down all her feelings to help her get through her suppressed
emotions.
The mother s guilt is justifiable though because it comes from decisions she made in the past, the
actions of neglect. We see the mother leave her young daughter to go on a date knowing that it was
wrong. Except when we left her alone nights, telling ourselves she was old enough...The time we

best of all possible worlds, and everything that transpires in this world is for the best. Candide accepts
Pangloss s teachings as absolute truth. Pangloss optimism can be considered as exaggerated and blind.
Optimism is defined as a disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or
conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome; the belief that good ultimately predominates
over evil in the world; the belief that goodness pervades reality; and the doctrine that the existing
world is the best of all possible worlds. Throughout the story, Pangloss encounters suffering that
contradicts his beliefs that this is the best possible world to live in. His struggle and suffering make us
think that Voltaire was creating a satire of the beliefs of the time. With this era of time being known as
the Age of Enlightenment, one might think that the intention of Voltaire was to represent extreme
optimism in an era where you were supposed to think with rational and reason. ... Show more content

During this time, people were thinkers and used rational and reason to find solutions for their
problems. Candide tried to follow Pangloss teachings, but as the world kept hurting he began to think

1. In HTTP there are POST requests and GET requests, explain the difference(s) and why one is
slightly more secure than the other. Solution: 1.1 Difference (1) GET is typically used to retrieve data
from server that doesn t change anything on the server. POST is used to send data to server that
somehow causes a change in the state of server, such as inserting data in a database. (2) On client side,
GET uses URL to submit data and the data will be seen in URL. To submit data, POST puts data in
HTML HEADER. (3) For GET, the server uses Request.QueryString to get the value of variables. For
POST, the server uses Request.Form to get the data submitted. (4) GET usually transfers small amount
of data, while POST can transfer relatively larger amount of data. 1.2 Why one is slightly more secure
than other POST is slightly more secure than GET, because using GET, parameters will be seen in the
URL, while using POST, parameters are hidden from view. 2. Explain why certificate authorities are

Patriarchal Relations Between The Patriarchy And The Mode...
Patriarchal structures that have played a profound role in shaping the economy throughout history
remain systemic to the organisation of today s economic capitalism. Maria Mies work, Patriarchy and
Accumulation on a World Scale, looks at the role of the patriarchy in maintaining social relations of
production that is conducive to capitalistic ideals. This notion remains relevant and potent in today s
society. Remnants of patriarchal relations fundamentally enable the extent of class, exploitation,
agency and power that drives this capitalist economy. While man woman relations are conducive the
process of capital accumulation, they are not mutually indispensible. That is, there is no infinite or
explicit relationship between labour wage gender inequality under capitalism. However, it is the
inability to disaffirm the prevalence of gendered norms that define women s place in society enables
the patriarchy to work in favour of capitalism and vice versa. The interdependence between the
patriarchy and the mode of production will be analysed in this essay through three principle premises.
The starting point will look at the social organisation of hierarchical sexual relations based on
biological natures. This will be the foundational and underlying basis in which the patriarchy
subliminally persists and reaffirms itself to influence capitalist societies. Further on, it will look at the
ways in which male female relations that have persisted from precapitalist times continue to

A White Man s Burden, And Achebe s Things Fall Apart
In history, colonization was a truly popular tradition practiced by great and powerful empires in order
to extract and retrieve all materials necessary to support their homeland. However, in order to achieve
such sense of commerce and well being, those colonists who had the power, had to colonize weaker
and far less advanced societies. Great powers such as Britain and France would then travel to these
societies and implement their rule in order to gain prosperity. Some, those who benefited from
colonization, felt that the practice of colonization was an obligation to better the uncivilized, societies
and help them advance, but the emotional and physical hurt that came from colonizing outweighed the
positive aspects. The intention was good, but the manner in which colonization was carried out was
poor. This topic is immensely controversial that pieces such as Kipling s poem, A White Man s
Burden, and Achebe s Things Fall Apart, have been written in order to support or go against
colonization. But despite much debate, colonization has been a tradition that has caused those regions
being colonized much struggle and negativity. The novel Things Fall Apart, speaks of the life of
Umuofia2, a fictional Nigerian village, and its traditions before colonization and then the changes it
faces at the initiation of colonization. It is based around the life of a man named Okonkwo before the
colonists come and the struggles he faces when they arrive. Just as all other regions, Umuofia

America Online, Financial statement analysis
Financial statement analysis America Online, Inc. Case Study 1
1. Prior to 1995, why was America Online so successful in the commercial online industry relative to
its competitors CompuServe and Prodigy?
AOL offered a broad range of features including real time talk, electronic mail, e magazines and
newspapers, online classes, shopping, and internet access. They also had software for the internet such
as for production and distribution of original content, interactive marketing and transactions
capabilities, and networks to support the transmission of data. In other words, AOL was a platform
that connected the person with the need to internet access with the person who had the internet content
by charging membership fees. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Considering the uncertainty in the subscription life, in order to provide more accurate report AOL
should change its accounting policy and charge the subscriber acquisition cost to the period in which it
is incurred. The company was not consistent with this point of view and actually increased the
amortization period from 12 18 months to 24 months in 1995. AOL was too confident in its market
strategy and retention ability and ignored the increased competition in the market. 5. What would be
the effect on AOL s 1994 and 1995 ending balance sheets if the company had followed the policy of
expensing subscriber acquisition outlays instead of capitalizing them? What would be the effect of
expensing subscriber acquisition costs on AOL s 1995 income statement?
If AOL expensed the subscriber acquisition outlays instead of capitalizing them, it removes these costs
from the asset section on the balance sheets, which reduces the total assets. The shareholder s equity
decreases as a result. If these costs were expensed, they would appear in the expense section on the
income statement. Therefore, increasing the expenses and reduce the net income on the income

Difference Between Homeland Security And Homeland Security
Homeland Security and Homeland Defense are two concepts that will have intersecting missions
combined with parallel directives and even sometimes competing objectives. While the concept of
Homeland Security and Homeland Security will be explored with greater depth later, the question is
how does Homeland Security and Homeland Defense both protect critical national infrastructure. How
do these two different missions both compete and complement one another in their efforts to protect
those vulnerable infrastructure elements to ensure they remain safe and away from those who would
want to do harm in an effort to create widespread terror and even disable or disorient our national
defense.
Homeland Defense refers to the guarding of national sovereignty, of protecting actual territory and the
population contained within against external threats. The mission of this defense has been traditionally
been charged to groups like the National Guard with what is referred to as Title 32 duty from the state
National Guard troops. This allows personnel with traditional military training to perform many
necessary duties to the homeland defense mission without ever running afoul of the Posse Comitatus
Act. Posse Comitatus basically restricts the military from performing and domestic law or policy
enforcement. While the act only specifically refers to the Army, and then the Air Force was also
amended to be a party to the law in 1956, the Navy and Marines also adhere to the rules by

  • 2. Behaviorism And The Operant Conditioning Theory Essay It is a fact that people learn differently. Some people learn by seeing, some by hearing, some by doing, and then others learn from a combination of these. For many decades psychologists, theorists, and scientists have all sought to prove to their peers, society and the world that not only do people learn differently but children and adult learning differ also. Learning theories are conceptualized frameworks which describe how individuals absorb, process and retain information. Behaviorists such as John B. Watson, B.F. Skinner, Edward L. Thorndike, Ivan Pavlov and Edwin R. Guthrie believed that all learners were passive in nature and only responded to external stimuli. Behaviorism, as explored by the before mentioned, is a biological basis of learning and focuses exclusively on observable behaviors. This includes Thorndike s theory of connectionism, Pavlov s classical conditioning and the well known conditioning theory from Skinner the operant conditioning model. However, many researchers did not like the one size fits all explanation of behaviorism. Cognitivism grew in response to behaviorism in an effort to better understand the mental processes behind learning. This challenged behaviorism with the idea that learning is the process of connecting symbols in a meaningful way; thus all knowledge is stored cognitively as symbols. Still, cognitivism didn t account for individuality and the input output model was seen as very mechanic. The social cognitive theory was developed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Football Mascot Analysis Sweat dripping down from faces, nasty pads being thrown out and replaced along with the ripped pants. The smell of cleats reeking along with the molded mouth guards and practice jerseys. This is what is known as the first day of football tryouts. All the little ones gather around their friends eager like it is Christmas morning ready to be running around and hitting people. Each one brought up to know the nothing but live, breathe, sleep lifestyle of football. But not everyone knows that lifestyle. There is that one kid who is left out and ends up being the mascot every year keeping his teammates positive and happy while occasionally bringing them water when needed. After consulting, the coach found out his reasoning being, when he played as a child, they did not have all the gear to entirely be safe and this worried the dad that the same thing would happen to his son. But because football has changed and teaches kids to stay in shape and learn life skills such as sportsmanship, hard work, discipline, and teamwork, parents should take the risk and let their kids play the game. By participating in football people can learn sportsmanship, hard work, discipline, and teamwork. Considering the many lessons it teaches, teamwork and discipline play the main role. With teamwork, players/children are learning how to trust their teammates the more experience they have with each other. As for discipline, it teaches kids to work hard and set good goals which can be helpful for them in the future as opposed to not playing, and being a step behind. NFL expert Jobe Lewis says that football requires a pretty unique brand of teamwork and requires the player to discipline himself and to work hard (Lewis 1). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Google Employee Incentives Introduction There are very few companies in the world that are successful in two realms: its personnel realm and the business realm. It has become common knowledge that Google s employees love working at Google. They don t simply like it, they love it. Many of Google s employees are computer programmers and coders, and it takes more than money to both motivate them and keep them content. Google s original campus in Mountain View, California, otherwise known as GooglePlex, offers employees everything they may need or want and more leaving them with little reason to go home at all. It is abundantly clear that this costly approach has paid huge dividends to Google. Google s very public relationship with its employees has been a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reality is, Google offers even more to its employees. In November 1999, Google hired its first full time chef, Charlie Ayers, who was previously the chef for the Grateful Dead. Ayers won a cook off competition with other contestants and what was then 40 employees chose him. Google now has over 30,000 employees around the globe. According to Jordan Newman, a Google spokesman, Google s goal is to create the happiest, most productive workplace in the world. In order to do so, it has created a workplace where there are massages, on site dry cleaning, yoga classes, gourmet cafes, daycare, transportation services, car wash and oil changes, foreign language classes, and health care facilities all for free. This doesn t include the Lego play rooms, TGIF drinking days, secret rooms behind bookcases, and couches that consist of rowboats with cushions. This also doesn t scratch the surface of what is likely the most envied element of engineers jobs at Google: the 20% rule. This rule requires that engineers spend 20% of their time or one day each week on any project that he or she chooses. In fact, Gmail was created in the twenty percent time, and it took years of convincing to get Google to go through with it, only because they were afraid of stretching themselves too thin and extending themselves into areas that they were not previously focused on. • 5. Good Corporate Social Responsibility Is Good For Business Good Corporate Social Responsibility is Good for Business Introduction Many companies question whether positive acts of corporate social responsibility are beneficial to the organization s profitability or simply cost the company money. Although practicing good corporate social responsibility can be expensive at times, the benefits and positive outcomes outweigh the costs spent. Among many other positive outcomes, acts of corporate social responsibility have the ability to increase investor relations, can benefit a company s long term image, and can lead to the development of new products. Thus, good corporate social responsibility is very good for business. Investor Relations Investors are an essential part of any company or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Long Term Image When companies perform good deeds such as charitable and philanthropic work within the communities it serves, consumers take notice. Such engagement in the community gives a company a competitive advantage over their competitors in the industry. Social responsibility can make one company stand apart from the rest. Consumers appreciate it when their favorite brands support their community. Consumers may also frequent a company and purchase its products because of its socially responsible activities. Companies that target the everyday consumer, not an industry or government, have greater incentive to appear charitable in order to increase demand for their products (Lev, Petrovits, Radhakrishnan, 2010). There is a correlation between the company s perceived image and the demand for the company s products. Consumers like to support companies that act positively in the community because the consumer in turn feels like they (in turn) are supporting the community. People generally want to be good neighbors and support causes that help the world, and if a company has a well known reputation of helping others, the consumer may be more likely to support that specific organization over a competitor. Consumers are more likely to support products and organizations that go above and beyond for the greater good, and that would thus drive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In an article by Adam Turner, titled Smart technology may make your home a net target , Turner explains the dangers of using smart home devices. How do these dangers affect smart home technology? To explain the issues, Turner relays the knowledge of AVG security adviser Michael McKinnon. Mckinnon claims that people use most of these devices to access files remotely, giving hackers the opportunity to breach them. After a hacker gains access to a home s internal network, they can then collect passwords and financial information (Turner 1). The essence of Turner s argument is that by using internet connected smart home technology, hackers have an easier means of accessing sensitive information. However, as home technology advances, security measures are advancing as well. Michael Passingham s article titled The Norton Core is a crazy looking, ultra secure router presents a new line of defense against home hackers. • 8. Taking a Look at the Kashmir Conflict INTRODUCTION The Kashmir Conflict has been an ongoing battle between India and Pakistan for decades. At its very basis, it is a territorial dispute between the governments of India and Pakistan and Kashmiri insurgent groups over control of the region of Kashmir. However, at it s core it is religious quarrel that has been affected by the presence of nuclear weapons and the desire for local autonomy. The potential for peace is a topic still widely debated and rarely agreed upon by scholars. Through the decades long conflict and continuous disaccord between India and Pakistan, the path to peace is paved solely by the Kashmiri people and their desires for their future, and with the resolution of this conflict, India and Pakistan may finally be able to contain the forces of communalism and religious extremism that has plagued them for decades. BACKGROUND The Kashmir conflict arose from the partition of the Indian sub continent along religious lines, which led to the formation of India and Pakistan. However, 650 states, run by princes, still existed within the two newly independent countries in which the princes had to decide which country to join or if they would remain independent. Due to its location, Kashmir, and its ruler Maharaja Hari Singh, could choose to join either India or Pakistan. Unable to decide which nation to join, Hari Singh chose to remain neutral. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives (Orwell 236). O Brien says that what differentiates Big Brother from the Nazis is that Big Brother knows its intent. Paraphrasing what O Brien tries to convey, it can be stated that even though the Nazis killed millions of innocent civilians, as did the Russian communists, they were not as horrible as Big Brother because they did not understand that they were wrong. O Brien states that Big Brother has cupidity for power and no other motivation to be fascist. To compare, in the book Libya and Qaddafi by Don Lawson, Lawson says of Qaddafi: Today there is little doubt in most Western observers minds that Qaddafi is very much his own person, taking orders from no one and wanting only what he believes best for his country. Complex architectures can be now realized on a single chip. The integration of existing and new technologies with CMOS extends the scope of implementation. Figure 3 : Relationship among More Moore, More than Moore, and Beyond CMOS 4.1 More than Moore The functional diversification of the semiconductor based devices by non digital components is More than Moore implementation. These non digital functionalities may not scale at the same rate as the digital components. The non digital components are capable of interacting with outside world through sensors and actuators. This integration of functions like analog and mixed signal processing, addition of passive, power components and bio chips increases the range of applications such as communications, automotive, biomedical and security. As integration grows so does the challenges, it demands the need for multidisciplinary research programs to run in pace with growing scientific fields. 4.2 More Moore The expansion of the CMOS by conventional dimensional scaling to reduce the cost per function and improved performance is More Moore. He also formed a permanent army and navy which swore allegiance to him. Octavian elected himself consul, but in 27 BC offered to lay down his powers, but the Senate disapproved and urged him to continue. They awarded him the title of Augustus, which means Exalted or Majestic One. From then on he was referred to as Augustus Caesar. Augustus also became the tribune and received power for life and became the protector of the Roman people. For decades, makeup companies have treated foundation shades like a high end, exclusive VIP club that women of color cannot get into. Representation in the beauty industry is a continued issue that no makeup company can seem to get right. While the spectrum of foundation shades have widen, the makeup counter has not changed much. There is a major misunderstanding between makeup industries and women of color. This is a result of the lack of understanding of the needs of the diverse consumer. There is an absence of knowledge and empathy for others that are not white. When we consider these factors we have to think about the creators of these products. Often times they do not look like us, so how can we expect for them to meet our needs. This form of discrimination can place a direct discouragement on women of color s self esteem. This exclusion in an attempt to purchase foundation for their skin tone is what race relation s specialist, Nadra Kareem Nittle calls colorism. In her article What Is Colorism Skin Tone Discrimination in America, she describes colorism as the disadvantage dark skinned people face, while privileging those with lighter skin. In this comparison I will be analyzing how these author s writing styles portray the character development in Silko s main character Tayo, and the minor characters which Wolfe documented. In both pieces, the reader can see that the characters are presented either internal or external conflicts, and sometimes both, that shape their realities as well as affect the decisions they make. In order to convey this character progression, both Silko and Wolfe illustrate the ways that their characters gain their acceptance of their social standings in society, and more importantly in themselves and what they believe, through the use of fragmented writing styles as well as the inclusion of flashbacks and poems. Before I analyze these author s writing styles, I want to point out the different obstacles that these characters are facing. • 40. Optimism In The Novel Candide By Voltaire The novel, Candide by Voltaire, is about Candide who grows up in the home of Baron Thunder ten tronckh in the German province of Westphalia. His tutor, Pangloss, teaches him that their world is the best of all possible worlds, and everything that transpires in this world is for the best. Candide accepts Pangloss s teachings as absolute truth. Pangloss optimism can be considered as exaggerated and blind. Optimism is defined as a disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome; the belief that good ultimately predominates over evil in the world; the belief that goodness pervades reality; and the doctrine that the existing world is the best of all possible worlds. Throughout the story, Pangloss encounters suffering that contradicts his beliefs that this is the best possible world to live in. His struggle and suffering make us think that Voltaire was creating a satire of the beliefs of the time. With this era of time being known as the Age of Enlightenment, one might think that the intention of Voltaire was to represent extreme optimism in an era where you were supposed to think with rational and reason. ... • 43. Patriarchal Relations Between The Patriarchy And The Mode... Patriarchal structures that have played a profound role in shaping the economy throughout history remain systemic to the organisation of today s economic capitalism. Maria Mies work, Patriarchy and Accumulation on a World Scale, looks at the role of the patriarchy in maintaining social relations of production that is conducive to capitalistic ideals. This notion remains relevant and potent in today s society. Remnants of patriarchal relations fundamentally enable the extent of class, exploitation, agency and power that drives this capitalist economy. While man woman relations are conducive the process of capital accumulation, they are not mutually indispensible. That is, there is no infinite or explicit relationship between labour wage gender inequality under capitalism. However, it is the inability to disaffirm the prevalence of gendered norms that define women s place in society enables the patriarchy to work in favour of capitalism and vice versa. Further on, it will look at the ways in which male female relations that have persisted from precapitalist times continue to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. A White Man s Burden, And Achebe s Things Fall Apart In history, colonization was a truly popular tradition practiced by great and powerful empires in order to extract and retrieve all materials necessary to support their homeland. However, in order to achieve such sense of commerce and well being, those colonists who had the power, had to colonize weaker and far less advanced societies. Great powers such as Britain and France would then travel to these societies and implement their rule in order to gain prosperity. Some, those who benefited from colonization, felt that the practice of colonization was an obligation to better the uncivilized, societies and help them advance, but the emotional and physical hurt that came from colonizing outweighed the positive aspects. The intention was good, but the manner in which colonization was carried out was poor. This topic is immensely controversial that pieces such as Kipling s poem, A White Man s Burden, and Achebe s Things Fall Apart, have been written in order to support or go against colonization. But despite much debate, colonization has been a tradition that has caused those regions being colonized much struggle and negativity. The novel Things Fall Apart, speaks of the life of Umuofia2, a fictional Nigerian village, and its traditions before colonization and then the changes it faces at the initiation of colonization. It is based around the life of a man named Okonkwo before the colonists come and the struggles he faces when they arrive. Just as all other regions, Umuofia ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Difference Between Homeland Security And Homeland Security Homeland Security and Homeland Defense are two concepts that will have intersecting missions combined with parallel directives and even sometimes competing objectives. While the concept of Homeland Security and Homeland Security will be explored with greater depth later, the question is how does Homeland Security and Homeland Defense both protect critical national infrastructure. How do these two different missions both compete and complement one another in their efforts to protect those vulnerable infrastructure elements to ensure they remain safe and away from those who would want to do harm in an effort to create widespread terror and even disable or disorient our national defense. Homeland Defense refers to the guarding of national sovereignty, of protecting actual territory and the population contained within against external threats. The mission of this defense has been traditionally been charged to groups like the National Guard with what is referred to as Title 32 duty from the state National Guard troops. This allows personnel with traditional military training to perform many necessary duties to the homeland defense mission without ever running afoul of the Posse Comitatus Act. Posse Comitatus basically restricts the military from performing and domestic law or policy enforcement. While the act only specifically refers to the Army, and then the Air Force was also amended to be a party to the law in 1956, the Navy and Marines also adhere to the rules by ...
