Cultural And Linguistic Boundaries And Influence
Survey design can raise issues that can traverse the cultural and linguistic boundaries and influence the
survey questions selection and procedure. These issues can become more pressing and critical
especially when surveys are conducted in support of vital entities such as government policies,
program evaluations, human rights investigations and government policies. Survey accommodation to
certain cultures and languages is an issue of importance and significance. There are logical reasons for
these issues as survey participants can interpret things and respond differently according to the
question order effects, cultural and language background. Also, the participants` understanding of the
survey construction, intention, data usage and assurance of their information, can influence the
designer`s approach of questions construction and organization (Blair Piccinino, 2005). The previous
literature reviews shed the light on several aspects such as the survey design implications. The
importance of the survey context becomes apparent when the researchers consider the situations where
cultural and linguistic factors are involved. These factors can influence the design due to several
reasons, Some researchers design the surveys from scratch for the purpose of using it in cultures and
language settings, which are not their own. Language consideration is characteristic features of
cognitive socialized skills that influence survey participants. This can result in social

Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti Research Paper
Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer who was born in Naples. In 1733, he moved to
Madrid, where he spent the remaining time of his life there and served Queen Maria Barbara. He
composed his 555 well known keyboard sonatas for the queen during this period of time. These pieces
were mostly written to be played on the harpsichord or the early pianofortes. Although most of the
sonatas were composed in pairs, the D major sonatas, often performed together, formed a rare triptych
of three sonatas. Sonata in D Major, K.491 is the second piece of the triptych, which was composed in
1756 1757. Similar to most of his other sonatas, Sonata in D major is in the binary form (AB AB). The
structure in dance movements of the Baroque period is

The Transition Times. Graduation Is One Example Of A Time
The Transition Times Graduation is one example of a time of celebration and honor. It is the reward
you receive for multiple years of difficult work and perseverance. It is also an extremely bittersweet
occasion because often times you are required to make difficult decisions. Decisions that could take
you away from everyone and everything you have ever known. This is known as a time of transition.
Honestly, it seems a bit anticlimactic that after all the emotions and preparation you do beforehand is
all summarized within a few short hours. This is how the majority of my fellow upcoming graduates
are feeling right now, but I do not. I believe that in order to better understand these monumental
occasions of transition, you must first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During high school you form both positive and negative relationships with people and learn a various
assortment of life lessons. If I challenged myself to choose my top three picks on what life lessons I
have learned I would say freedom, responsibility, and tolerance. I say that I have learned the lesson of
freedom simply owing to the fact that this was my first taste of freedom. When you receive your
driver s license and car or you are able to date for the first time you feel the absolutely exhilarating
unbridled feeling of freedom. This feeling blossoms and flourishes for only a moment, because then it
has company. Freedom is joined by the always rational and logical emotion responsibility.
Responsibility is like the notification that forces you to go home in time for your curfew or the friend
you forces you to stop at the stop sign or to not drink and drive. When freedom and responsibility
work together, you are safe and you also have a great time growing up. When the two emotions
combine together your chances of living to adulthood increase dramatically. The last life lesson I
chose is most definitely not the least important. I have become more tolerant of not only people and
their decisions but also with circumstances. This was not only the most difficult lesson I have had to
learn, but it is the lesson that I am most thankful for due to the fact that I know that I will use it more
and more frequently as I enter into the real world .

The Dark Side of the Mind Exposed in Cask of Amontillado
A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the
avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong. With that statement,
Montresor begins his tale of revenge deciding that the act must be slow and sweet and that in order to
fully enjoy it, his adversary must be aware of his intentions. Hidden within those same few lines, lies
not only this horrid plan, but also the true interest of its true author. In his Cask of Amontillado, Edgar
Allen Poe reveals his supreme interest in the dark side of the human mind and heart.

He is only concerned with attempting to understand the mind of Montresor as he commits the ultimate
dark act of murder.
Throughout the story, Montresor shows that the murder was what is now called in the first degree it
was clearly preplanned and intentional. By giving [the attendants] orders not to stir from the house,
Montresor shows that he was very aware of his actions. Even the placement of the bricks and mortar,
as well as the clever concealment of the trowel reflect the final execution of a well thought out plan. In
dialogue, Montresor also reveals his plan: Fortunato: the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I
shall not die of a cough. Montresor: True true. Montresor says that it is true. Fortunato will not die of a
cough, he will die at the hand of Montresor. The deep seated hatred necessary for the preplanned
extinguishing of another s life shows this dark side which Poe so wishes to be understood. Poe seems
to suggest that even if the readers have not physically carried out such a hideous act as that of
Montresor, they have in their imaginations.
Even the calm way the story is related by Montresor causes the reader to wander further into the mind
of the murderer further into the dark side of the mind and of the heart. With the line for the half of a
century no mortal has disturbed the bones, a new perspective on the story emerges. But even when the

SEMESTER II SESSION 2012/2013
GKA 2043 Research Methodology
Title:
The Study of Gothic Style and Its Influence on Modern Day Concept Arts
Introduction:
Gothic art flourished from the 12th century to the 16th century in Europe in response of the Byzantine
and Romanesque tradition. Although Gothic is associated with arts, its most prominent use is in
architecture, mainly for its pointed arch and flying buttress. To this day, the Gothic style is taken as a
label for visual arts such as concept art designs, yet the meaning stray from the original context, thus
becoming rarely accurate.
In this study, one of the objectives is to discover how a concept artist conveys moods through gothic
style and the feels in his or her concept art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To figure out the ways of an artist specialized in concept arts producing gothic esque atmosphere and
effect in influencing one s perception of gothic based elements
3. To find out how Gothic style has evolved throughout the eras, from the original early period to
modern era, and also to learn how to apply the style accordingly in creating future artworks
4. To discover whether a concept artist s way and theory of art suited to be made as guidelines for art
students in producing artwork
Methodology:
In context of art and style, the suitable research type for this study, Gothic Style and Its Influence in
Modern Day Concept Art , is Qualitative Studies . The study is aimed to explain phenomena or
happening in a verbal manner and/or written descriptions rather than complex experimentation or
hypothesis by using numerical value ( Quantitative Studies ). In simpler words, a qualitative approach
will be conducted to study the influence of Gothic style in modern day concept art.
Definition: Gothic and Concept Art
Gothic Art is concerned with the painting, sculpture, architecture, and music characteristic of the
second of two great international eras that flourished in western and central Europe during the Middle
Ages. Gothic Art defines much of the late medieval art that grew out of the Byzantine and
Romanesque traditions. These were very formal artistic traditions with rigorous religious conventions
that limited the personal creativity of the

The Golden Age In The Elizabethan Era
The Elizabethan era was a time full of superstition and persecution, however it was also the beginning
of a new age, The Golden Age as it is commonly referred to. During this time the people of England
were beginning to progress, in a scientific and artistic way. Music wasn t the only thing that was
developing, science and philosophy were also flourishing.
There was a reason that music began to become an everyday part of life under Queen Elizabeth s rule.
The queen herself even had a musical background and it was well known that music was her favorite
art form. She also took a great interest in supporting experienced musicians and composers. From
Elizabeth s interest in the arts, her people went from generational family songs to reformed
masterpieces from great men, such as William Byrd, Thomas Morley, and Thomas Weelkes. The
society and culture that Queen Elizabeth helped create differentiates from many cultures we have
learned about in class. In other cultures, such as China, someone who has career in the arts is typically
seen as a lower social class citizen, whereas in England the making of an educated and upper class
man must be fluent in musical theory. We can tell by an excerpt from The Compleat Gentleman
written by Henry Peacham in 1622, that the basic role of a gentleman was to sing your part sure, and
at first sight, withall, to play the same upon your viol, or exercise of the lute.
During this time there was a wide variety of instruments used and some are

Semiotic Analysis
A Semiotic Analysis: There s A Soldier In All Of Us
In today s society, people are significantly influenced by the media. Mediated messages are often
deliberate and appeal to specific audiences based on race, gender, ethnicity, social status, education
level, political views, and much more. By applying semiotics to everyday life, we can decipher
meaning within texts, film, and photography in a more constructive way. Here, it becomes evident that
semiotics is a fundamental concept that enables better communication. Through a semiotic analysis of
the 2010 Call of Duty (COD): Black Ops There s A Soldier In All Of Us commercial, it becomes
obvious how and why this advertisement was so successful toward various audiences. In order to ...

These celebrities are recognizable in American popular culture and therefore appeal to the American
public. Another cultural code embedded in this trailer is created by the use of background music.
Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter (1969), is played throughout the commercial, which targets members
of older generations in America. This advertisement also indicates that both men and women attain
power and authority in this video game, just as they do in actual U.S. military matters. As a society,
we carry these cultural codes and understandings of life over to our exposure to media productions,
which generates meaning within them. Through the COD: Black Ops trailer, advertisers were able to
transmit messages to a range people with different social classes, education levels, political ideologies,
and worldviews. Because the COD: Black Ops commercial is so rich in signifiers, it is able to appeal
to many different types audiences. We can say that fun and excitement are the signified in this
commercial and that a number of signifiers demonstrate this, including signs of adrenaline and
smiles/laughter on the faces of different characters involved, as well as a signifier that even famous
people are having fun playing this video game. Through the use of associations between signifiers and
signified, consumers are encouraged to buy this video game since everyone is doing it . As Berger

Evaluation Of A Summative Evaluation
Component Two
Type of evaluation The type of evaluation that will be conducted will be a summative evaluation. The
summative evaluation will be conducted at the end of the program to see if the goals of the program
were accomplished. Were the children able to learn about nutrition
Evaluation Goals
1) To determine if this program is successful in educating the children in various cooking techniques.
2) To help children in a low income area discover affordable ways to meal preparation.
3) To determine if the program can be conducted in other low in come areas.
Evaluation Questions
1) Are the children committed to coming to the class on a weekly basis?
2) Is the program providing the children with life skills they can apply at home?
3) Are the children enjoying the program?
Rationale
The rationale of this evaluation is to confirm that the goals of the program are being meet. That the
children are being educated in making healthy choices and participating in the program. In order for
the evaluation to be accurate research needs to determine if the program will be effective.

Compare And Contrast John Brown And Timothy Mcveigh
Timothy McVeigh committed the most deadly act of domestic terrorism in United States history. His
actions resulted in both outrage and fascination, and lead to significant inquiry into why he did what
he did. Many at the time, already scared by the rising trends of Jihadist terrorism felt that McVeigh s
actions were in large part something new, something atypical to the American experience. However,
such was not the case. Terrorism has been prevalent throughout American history and tied to various
trends and movements, including abolitionism. Ultimately John Brown and Timothy McVeigh have
striking similarities, such as the presence of their action outside of the more established and organized
groups of their respective movements and the media ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although he did not get to see it in his lifetime, John Brown s polarizing effect on the North and South
helped encourage the outbreak of the Civil War, which would determine once and for all the fate of
slavery. This, however, is not the case when it comes to McVeigh. When the Oklahoma City bombing
is discussed, ideas regarding McVeigh s views were much more likely to be pushed to the side. Some
of this could potentially be a result of attempts of people who could be potentially associated with
McVeigh and his ideals (whether they be right wingers, verterans, etc.) to distance themselves from
the event. This is perhaps best shown through examples of veterans insisting upon the wretchedness of
McVeigh s actions. Such a distancing attempt, however, was also visible during John Brown s time. As
mentioned in Thoreau s piece, many contemporary abolitionists attempted to distance themselves and
their abolition movement from John Brown. Thus, the distance must result from a different cause. This
cause is most likely the media. Although both John Brown and Timothy McVeigh had their actions
highly publicized, only John Brown s was done so in the context of the largest movement on people s
minds at the time: abolitionism. Although right wing terror certainly was a fear for a short few, it was
not what Americans were

Essay on Korean Comfort Women
Comfort women, or ianfu as they are called in Korean, are females who were forced sex slaves for the
Japanese Imperial Army (Chunghee). Some of the women were dragged off with physical force as
their families wept, while others were actually sold to the army by their destitute families (Watanabe).
Still other were officially drafted by the Japanese Imperial Army and believed they would be factory
workers or nurses (Hwang in Schellstede 4). Some Korean village leaders were ordered to send young
women to participate in important business for the Imperial Army (Watanabe). Many Japanese soldiers
referred to comfort women as teishintai, which means volunteer corps, so those women who thought

The majority of Korean women seem to have come from lower class worker and farmer families.
Korean and other Asian women were assigned to lower ranking soldiers, while Japanese and European
women were reserved for higher ranking officers (Watanabe). This obviously portrays the
condescending attitude the Japanese had toward Koreans.
Japanese military leaders formulated the concept of comfort women in order to stop soldiers from
committing sexual violence towards women they might encounter. Japanese Lieutenant General
Okamura Yasuji proposed that comfort women should be shipped to Shanghai to solve the problem of
223 rapes reportedly committed by troops there (Kim). One former comfort woman reported that in
some places, soldiers were so desperate for some kind of outlet for their sexual desires that they had
intercourse with dogs (Kim in Schellstede 32). It is estimated that over 125 million forced sexual acts
took place between Japanese soldiers and comfort women in the span of only five years (Kim). The
Japanese military made soldiers pay to have sex with comfort women. The prices were as follows:
1.50 yen for privates, 2 yen for non commissioned officers, 2.50 yen for junior officers, and 3 yen for
senior officers (Hicks 19). Concerned for the health of their soldiers, Japanese military leaders
provided condoms to thwart the spread of any sexually transmitted diseases; however, these condoms

The Collapse Of The Soviet Union
The collapse of the Soviet Union can ultimately be attributed to three broad, complex, and
interconnected issues: The economy, Leadership, and Geography. All three of theses factors are
interconnected and each contain several reasons why they contributed to the ultimate collapse of the
Soviet Union. The first and most simple reason the Soviet Union failed can be attributed to their
geographical challenges. The Soviet Union suffered two problems in regard to geographic challenges.
Firstly the country itself was far too vast, and its influence spread too far for there to be an easy to
spread authority (Suny). With such as large state to control there was realistically no feasible way that
influence from Moscow could control a large territory from Central Asia to Eastern Europe. This is a
territory that contained various amounts of ethnicities, religions, and cultures. In an obvious
perspective larger an state gets the harder it is to be controlled. Analytically speaking it is rather
impossible to control such a territory from a central authority. With the Soviet centrally commanded
system, authority from Moscow could not be spread vastly without a consequential use of money and
resources. Secondly The Soviet Union was blessed with an abundance of natural resources. At first
glance it would be easy to view this abundance of resources as a blessing for a powerful nation.
However from a historical angle the Soviet Union was trapped in resource curse. A resource curse

Foreign Exchange Market Essay
Introduction Any time someone travels to a foreign country, chances are they needed to exchange their
money, and in doing so, participated in ForEx trading. For many first time traders the Foreign
Exchange market can seem very confusing. ForEx is short for Foreign Exchange, it is the market in
which people can exchange currencies from all over the world (Peters, J. 2012). When someone trades
on the foreign exchange market, they are buying once currency and selling another. Buying and selling
occurs at the same time in the ForEx market, which is why currencies are always quoted in pairs

that the US dollar is always listed as one of the currencies in a major pair. The major pairs make up a
large portion of the ForEx market, and as a result, have high liquidity (Kritzer, A. 2012). In addition to
the major pairs, there is also something called crosses (Kritzer, A. 2012). Cross pairs do not contain

Metatheroy Theory
Question 1
A) Developmental theories are needed in scholarly researches. They can help researchers demonstrate
and describe developmental changes by directing researchers with plans to further their researches and
by organizing these planes (Miller, 2011, p.25). Theories pave the way for researchers and provide
them with a view in the nature of development (Miller, 2011, p.3). The view not only impact theory

The Relationship Between Parent And Family
Parent s: The first step to ensuring your child s safety outside of the home is establishing a healthy
family dynamic based around mutual trust and reliance on each other, to an extent. When you and
your child have a relationship between yourselves that is healthy, you ensure that your child feels safe
in the place that matters most; in their home. When a child feels safe in their home, among their
family, then they are more likely to feel the can communicate when there is something happening in
their lives outside the home that is bothering them or can prove harmful. Without this healthy
dynamic, your child may withhold important information from you that could end up causing a drastic
change in your child s wellbeing.
As important as open communication is between parent and child, it is equally as important to set a
solid set of rules for your child to follow. For example, younger children may not be allowed to cross
the street or leave the yard without an adult with them. Without solid rules for children to follow, then
the relationship between child and parent becomes too lax, and there is no sense of respect of child to
parent. Without a sense of mutual respect between parent and child, the child will then feel that their
parent has no knowledge of what is best for them; even though the rules their parent may try to
enforce rules that are in their best interest to follow.
As far as setting rules and punishments for your child, the ramifications should evolve as the

Emily Dickinson Diction
Much madness is divinest sense to a discerning eye. Emily Dickinson s great poem, Much Madness is
Divinest, expresses the true rebellious persona that Dickinson was from within and the sense of
frustration she had at being a very intelligent woman living during a time where men were the much
dominant. The poet uses this poem to reflect the anger she felt (although she was said to be very
reserved and quiet spoken) towards the society she lived in. When it came to putting down her
feelings on paper, Dickinson did not hold back. In her work Dickinson utilizes the concept of slant
rhyme, a wide ranged use of diction, and tone setting to give us her thoughts in concern to the society
that she much resented. Dickinson employs slant rhyme to emphasize the true madness in society.

Explain How Far Was Lord Dishili The Architect Of The 1867...
How far was Disraeli the Architect of the second reform act of 1867? It can be argued that Disraeli
was the architect of reform during the late 1860 s and through 1867 reform act, mainly due to the fact
that he realised that the conservative party might be seen as non reforming. To counter this he would
expand the franchise and gain potential new voters. However there is also significant evidence that
Lord Derby was the main architect of reform, mostly due to the fact that he had been part of the 1832
reform bill and when he returned to power in 1866 he took the lead in presenting the conservative
reform bill. One reason, which shows that Disraeli was the Architect of the Second Reform Bill 1867,
is that Disraeli wanted to consolidate his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Source 7 is from a letter written by Lord Derby to Disraeli saying that the conservatives have to deal
with the question of reform . It also says that Derby is not in favour of resisting reform... there is a
genuine demand , this shows that Derby was supporting reform as he saw the national push and
demand for reform which he believed could strengthen the Tory party. The letter came after pressure
for reform increased after attempts by liberals to deal with the issue in 1866, however Disraeli was
reluctant to deal with it. Due to Disraeli being reluctant to deal with the pressure for reform, it shows
that he was not as supportive of reform as Derby, thus it could be said that Derby was the main
architect of reform. Source 8 also supports the idea that Derby was the main architect of reform. It
explains that when Derby and Disraeli returned to power in 1866, it was Derby who took the lead in
proposing a conservative reform bill . Derby had previously helped to draft the 1832 reform bill 34
years earlier and he steered the 1867 measure through the Lords and held the conservative party in
unity with his one aim to place the Tory party permanently in power. He was to do this by expanding
the franchise to gain new voters because they would be seen as the reforming party whilst using the
most conservative measure

Colin Powell Leadership Principles
Three Leadership Principles from the Colin Powell 18 Leadership Principles
After reading all 18 of Colin Powell leadership principles, three of the principles stood out that I could
identify with. The first, Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off.
The second principle, The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped
leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not
care. Either case is a failure of leadership. I also identify with Colin Powell s seventeenth principle,
Have fun in your command. Don t always run at a breakneck pace. Take leave when you ve earned it:
Spend time with your families. Corollary: Surround yourself with people who take their work
seriously, but not themselves, those who work hard and play hard. Colin Powell s first principle was
something I deal with daily. Working in food service for over 24 years you learn that you cannot make
everyone happy. Since 2011, I have been the Food Program Manager for the INARNG. I approve or
disapprove rations requests for all the Indiana Army National Guard units and submit their requests to
the state approved contracted vendor. The vendor has a timeline to which they can process the orders
and work with their vendors to get ration items into their warehouse. The State Food Service SOP
specifies the timelines for ration requests when using the Army Food Management System (AFMIS).
If a unit does not meet the time requirements for our state vendor, then I will disapprove the request. I
will give the unit limited choices for other types of rations, usually Tailored Operational Training
Rations (TOTM), similar to MRE s. Some First Sergeants and company Commanders complain about
their meals, but I inform them on the State Food Service policy for submitting requests. If I let one
unit slide, then all of them will expect the same treatment. Recently, a new supply NCO took over one
of our infantry units. She once worked as the assistant to one of our brigade S4 sections and we
develop a friendly professional relationship, afterwards we became Facebook friends. When she
started a change of supply inventory she found 90 cases of expired MRE s from the

Someone in the Backseat- Creative Writing Essay
Driving through torrential rain was very torturous. The rain thumped on the bonnet and the wind
whistled along the curves of the car. The trees were waving frantically in the wind as if to attract the
attention of passing cars. Like the night, the winding country road grew longer and longer, darker and
darker with every passing hour. The bright headlights pushed back the darkness, which immediately
returned to haunt the rear of the car. The darkness seeps into the car and hangs heavily over the back

She stops the car in the garage yard and notices a light coming from a shack in one corner of the yard.
Natalie winds down her window and shouts for attention in the direction of the shack. No reply.
Natalie puts on her coat and gloves and gets out of the car. The yard is wet and muddy and she notices
numerous dark cabins lining the yard. She goes over to the cabin with the light on and knocks on the

There is a click and the door opens slightly. Hello, hello, is anybody there ? No reply. She pushes the

the overpowering damp smell forces her to immediately put her hands over her mouth and nose.

Beauty Of A Girl With Doves
Beauty Among Death in Gravestone of a Girl with Doves The High Classical Greek Period is
considered to be the Golden Age in Greek Art according to Art Historians (Pearson). This period from
450 400 BCE held a lot of destruction because of the wars going between the Athens and Sparta,
known as the Peloponnesian War, however, there was also a lot of beauty during this period because
sculptures and architects made art that depicted victory over wars won, such as the Parthenon. Despite
all the madness happening during this high classical period, a peaceful piece of art was born.

Since this sculpture is a gravestone, I felt that the sculptor made this gravestone with a gradient effect
with the low/high reliefs in order to signify that the young girl was fading away into death. A peplos,
which is a typical garment seen on specifically women in Greek art, hangs over her shoulders and
seems to create a dragging down feeling to the sculpture since peplos is heavy fabric. The peplos also
accentuates her body without actually revealing much of anything, which was appropriate considering
the time period, the age of the girl depicted, and the purpose that the sculpture served as, which is as a
gravestone. There is no movement whatsoever, but there does seem to be a subtle vertical line running
through the young girl s contropossto stature.
An expression is worth a thousand words. The young girl depicted shows no emotion, which is a
typical characteristic in the classical greek style. It looks as though the girl depicted has her mind
somewhere else, which actually creates a sense of peacefulness since her expression is not one of pain
or discomfort . Unlike most Greek sculptures that are massive in size, this sculpture is smaller because
it depicts the death of a small child. According to the description besides this sculpture, the doves that
the girl is holding represent her innocence of childhood. They can also represent the kind of person

October Sky Analysis
October Sky
The enlightening and inspirational true story of Homer Hickam in October Sky directed by Joe
Johnston reminds us all to aim for our goals and never give up, even while battling difficulty.
However, Homer was struggling for a great deal in his pursuit of rocketry, he was even struggling for
his life. Born in a coal mining town, son of a foreman, Homer seemed destined to work the mine when
he grew up. But in October Sky, Homer has to overcome what the mine represents: isolation and
darkness. Mining coal isolates many of the characters from each other throughout the storyline. The
main antagonist, Homer s father, John, frequently seems distant from his own family because of
emergencies and accidents inside the mine that demand his utmost attention. Even Homer s mother,
Elsie, threatens to leave him if he doesn t become more attentive to their son s interest in rocketry.

Two Examples Of Black Power-Era Nationalism In Hip Hop Nas
nother example of Black Power era nationalism in hip hop is New York rapper Nas s song Black

The Prussian state developed a well institutionalized bureaucracy and a well developed legal system
with strong protection of private property and enforcement of contracts. What was the main drive
behind the development of an efficient meritocratic government in Prussia? Explain how this (the
main drive in the prior answer) promoted an efficient bureaucracy. (Chapter 4)
Prussia was a liberal autocracy and the citizens did not have any way to directly hold the state
accountable for these rights, however even with this type of government structure, the state had
sustainable protections regarding the rights of its citizens. What caused the successfulness in the

2) What is corruption? Why is corruption a serious problem? (Chapter 5)
Corruption is a vital obstruction to the economic growth and equality regarded in countries, especially
poor, undeveloped countries. Corruption is also regarded as officials using public resources for private

Corruption can be critical for developing countries; an example of this is where foreign aid and loans
are used for private gain by officials instead of aiding the country. Countries that are corrupt generally

British population seemed uninterested in the early 1990 s and it wasn t until the mid to late 1990 s

Up until the launch of BSKYB the television industry had been mainly dominated by the BBC. Rupert
Murdoch changed that and the television industry became and still is dominated by commercial
television in particular satellite and cable. We then had access to a huge number of channels for both
news and entertainment. This meant that people felt they had a greater choice in what they watched
For example sport, people who particularly enjoyed baseball were now able to access a baseball

something the viewer would not be able to do with terrestrial television. In 1996 SKY decided to

paid for this because they felt that what they were receiving was an exclusive sports showing. Rupert

On self pre evaluation was a little harsh on myself. I wasn t sure what the leadership role would be
like and I didn t wasn t to set myself up for failure by rating myself at a 5. There were some
dimensions, like Providing Feedback, that I knew I would not be able to get a 5 in. This is because I
knew it would be hard to provide feedback on projects with such a quick turnaround as well as I wasn
t ready to punish group members. One dimension I really tried on was relationship building because I
knew how detrimental this dimension would be if we didn t bond as a group. I really made an effort to
talk to my group member s outside of class time. I think the reason I saw a need to change this was
because I have seen how doing group projects with people you aren t close is not fun, which in the end
hurts the groups motivation to work. Since we would be spending all semester together, I wanted to
make sure we were all comfortable. I have held a few leadership positions while a part of

what I would need to improve on. Overall, I tried to consistently stick with the strategies I chose and
only adapted when I saw the need to.

Finland, for example, requires a grueling matriculation exam in order to pass high school, composed
of one native language test and three other tests chosen by the test taker, in a broad range of subjects
such as physics, philosophy, history, foreign languages and mathematics exams of varying difficulty
(Finland). Results from the matriculation exams determine the student s prospects for postsecondary
education, which is free for Finnish citizens (Gamerman). One consequence of Finland s intense
matriculation exams is that students arrive at universities fully prepared for their studies, and students
who do not wish to continue on into college have sufficient preparation for a career. Japan, on the
other hand, has an entirely different method of encouraging its students to perform well in school.
Rather than a comprehensive high school exit exam, Japanese universities each have their own
uniquely arduous entrance exams, (Okano and Tsuchiya 114). The exams are highly competitive, so
there is great pressure on the student to perform well in order to get into the university of the student s

cram schools are another popular method of preparing for the exams (Okano and Tsuchiya 60). By
putting a great deal of responsibility on the student, the Japanese system encourages students to

Edgar Allan Poe Writing Style
Edgar Allan Poe s life was filled with tragedy, everybody he really loved died of tuberculosis or left
him. He constantly was rejected in his life and really never found someone who truly understood him.
Poe s mother died when he was three and his father left him, So Poe had some traumatic experiences
at a young age. Poe and his sister were later adopted by the Allen family and moved to England. Poe
later joined the military and started to write. Later he married his thirteen year old cousin who died of
tuberculosis. He then went on to marry two more women, but one left him and he died on his last wife.
Poe s life was constantly filled with death and disappointment which explains his vivid style of
writing. His traumatic life is explained through his dark writing, and the way he explains the story.
Poe s vivid writing style is constantly shown through his unique literary techniques.
One literary device Poe uses to show his vivid style is imagery. In Poe s short story The Cask of
Amontillado , he describes the antagonist (Fortunato) as he greets him, He accosted me with excessive
warmth, for he had been drinking too much. (234) Since Poe s writing is so vivid in the detail, the
imagery in this quote can almost make the reader feel how Fortunato is greeting him. The reader can
almost feel Fortunato s warmth and smell the alcohol. Poe also uses his imagery to make the reader
imagine the area he is in. In the same short story Poe describes the catacomb that he is in as,

contrast a sixteen ounce red bull contains a hundred and fifty four milligrams of caffeine that is half
the caffeine content than that of a coffee but it contains way more sugar, sodium and B12 which acts

for a speedy travel across the world. As RC Argawal Transportation says It has no physical barriers as
in the case of other mode of transport (RC Argawal Transportation). There are several disadvantages
that companies will incur when they ship their products by air. Just like any other shipping mode
planes can be hi jacked and the products can be stolen. Planes can crash, very costly, cannot carry
large cheap items, and there are legal restrictions on what can be flown in the plane. Since September

Comparing Ashima And Ashoke s Culture
When Ashima and Ashoke move to America, they have two children, Nikhil and Sonia, who are both
quite immersed in American culture. While their children are like this, they try to hold onto their own
Indian cultural traditions. Because of that, the family can be divided many times. In particular, Nikhil
doesn t always respect his family s culture which proves to be very challenging for Ashima and
Ashoke because they remain attached to that culture when they move and want him to grow up a
certain way. Although the audience can not blame them for feeling this way, it is easy to sympathize
with Nikhil as well. Many children of immigrants embrace their heritage, but that is not the case at all
with Nikhil. He hides it from people, embarrassed by it, for most of the story. Of course that upsets
Ashima and Ashoke and makes them want to push their son into accepting the Indian culture as his
own. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their first date is at Maxine s parents house, where she lives, and he quickly becomes captivated with
their lifestyle. He moves in with them, and participates in the same daily patterns, becoming a member
of their family. Nikhil has known one type of family dynamic his whole life, so he is fascinated by
Maxine s family. He also knows that his parents would not approve of this lifestyle, which might make
him want to engage in it even more. While he is with Maxine, he realizes that there are different ways
of life than that of his parents and he finds that he is connecting more and more with cultures other

Gilgamesh Female Characters
In this paper, I am going to analyze the female characters that caught my attention the most in the
three stories The Epic of Gilgamesh, Thousand and One Nights, and Candide. They all are important
characters in each of the stories and their influence in the story is to help. These stories also depict
how women were being treated during these times such as being used for their bodies and wisdom.
The characters that I will be analyzing in the paper are Shamhat, Ishtar, Shiduri, Sharazad, the Old
Woman, and Cunegonde. In all three stories, they mostly share the same depictions of the role of
women and how women weren t really important besides their bodies.
To start off, there were three characters from The Epic of Gilgamesh that interested me, so I will begin
by analyzing them. The first character was Shamhat. She was a hierodule, temple prostitute, that
Gilgamesh used to help civilize Enkidu. Besides being a prostitute, she caught my attention because of
her caring personality and generosity. She did things that she wasn t obligated to do such as taking off
some of her clothing to cloth Enkidu. She also went out of her way to teach Enkidu how to eat, dress
himself, and keep himself groomed like a human being should. Shamhat isn t a jealous or possessive
lover, she prepared Enkidu for life outside of the wild and let him discover the world on his own.
Shamhat was ultimately a positive figure in the story and in Enkidu s life because she inspires him to
move further in life

Pathway Of Igf-1 Pathway
The insulin/IGF 1 pathway which plays a major role in the control of lifespan and aging in animals
and humans includes a lot of genes if any gene transformed with single mutation the IGF 1 pathway
can increase lifespan and cause human longevity to remain active and youthful much longer than
normal. As in different species, yeast, nematodes and fruit flies there are genes homologous with
mammalian genes that control in IGF 1 pathway and mutation in any one of them may be affected on
lifespan (Tatar et al., 2003). In the study of model organisms, it was found that the IGF 1 pathway
consists of ligands, receptors, insulin receptor substrates, phosphoinositol 3 kinase (PI3K) system,
AKT kinases, and forkhead transcriptional factors.

These pathways are more complex than invertebrate. Mutations that in GH deficiency or in growth
hormone receptors cause decreased size, lower insulin levels, increased stress resistance and extend
lifespan (Bartke, 2008). Whereas GH is mediated through IGF 1 and effect on lifespan in these mice
may be mediated by this pathway. Heterozygous deletion mutations of the IGF 1 receptor (IGF1R)
gene causes a little reduction in size but a similar phenotype of improved stress resistance and
longevity in females only (Holzenberger et al., 2003). But in dogs, there is no evidence that IGF 1
signaling regulates lifespan because dog breeds have a strong inverse correlation with body size
(Patronek et al., 1997). Derangement of the insulin receptor (INSR) gene in most tissues leads to
insulin resistance and shortened lifespan in mice (Okamoto and Accili, 2003); but homozygous
deletion mutation in this gene specific to fat cells have the extended lifespan in both sexes (Bluher et
al., 2003). These results indicate that tissue specific effects are important for these pathways. Where a
knockout of the downstream signaling adapter protein (IRS1) also resulted in increased lifespan
(Selman et al., 2008).
There are several mechanisms demonstrated that the IGF 1 may affect aging with DAF 16/FOXO
which stimulates the transcription of heat shock protein genes that related to stress resistance (Murphy
et al., 2003). Moreover, FOXO3A gene can operate as a checkpoint on cell cycle

An Analysis Of Gwendolyn Brooks What s It Like To Be A...
The lives of gang people are dangerous, sneaky, and painful. In both What s it Like to be a Gang
Member? by Bill Lee, and We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks, portray the experience on being a
gang member is portrayed. They both show and illustrate, what it s like to be a gang member, and it is
not worth it. They do this by using descriptive words, and directly telling us what happened. What s it
Like to be a Gang Member? by Bill Lee, portrays how gang life works, and his own struggles. Bill in
this story describes his gang life. The message he sends is that gang life is risky and can have
consequences. One way to support this is this quote, I was nothing but frightened. This shows that he is
now scared because of his gang life.

How It Will End By Duhamel Summary
Relationships, Comparisons, Assumptions, and What Lies Beneath As time passes in a relationship, it
is inevitable that confrontations are bound to occur. Whether small disagreements created from minor
issues, to mediocre arguments based on daily matters, to serious incidents that can reflect relationship
taboos, it is a couple s perception and understanding of each other that can strengthen or weaken their
union. The poem How It Will End by Denise Duhamel portrays two couples involved in similar
matters as those previously described. One couple is having, what appears to be, an argument at the
beach and the second couple is watching them from afar, as they re on a boardwalk. As the poem
progresses, the second couple s assumptions of what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Duhamel s poem, this is clearly represented. One couple appears to be far from having a happy day
at the beach; they re arguing, the female s body language reveals a need for acceptance, distance, and
rejection. The second couple s belief of what is stirring and their relationship comparison based on
these thoughts, solidifies the underlying truth that marriage is not easy. Lines 20 to 21: I start to coach
the girl to leave her no good lifeguard, but my husband predicts he ll never leave, are depicting the
couple s mirroring on what they would actually do in this situation. The relationship judgement
concept continues in lines 23 through 25 with That s your problem you think every fight is funny. You
never take her seriously, and he says, You never even give a guy a chance and you re always nagging
where a compromise issue is portrayed this time, obviously on both couples. Relationships require you
to extend yourself for the sake of the other, that is collectively understanding each other s needs,
accept mistakes, and practice forgiveness. Should relationships be compared to others? Is the concept
of assumption safe for a union? Is proof necessary for a couple to be happy? Nothing good ever comes
of comparing your relationship to someone else s. It is better to acknowledge that each bond is unique
and has its strengths and weaknesses. One of the most important reasons not to compare relationships
is that you re not seeing the full picture. Furthermore, in the last two lines of the poem: She has her
arms around his neck and is crying into his shoulder, He whisks her up into his hut. We look around,
but no one is watching us it confirms that the second couple has issues lying deep beneath their own.
Once you begin comparing relationships, you ll probably start focusing on the

Different Types Of Art Movements Essay
Throughout the years many different types of art movements were being introduced. Some may be
more common to some people while others are not as popular. The Renaissance movement is the most
commonly known by the people. The term Renaissance means rebirth and it was introduced in the
early 14th century. The movement took place in Europe, however, the majority of the movement
began in Italy. There was a northern Renaissance and a southern Renaissance. In the northern
Renaissance, artists put more effort on the details of their artwork rather than focusing on making it
realistic. The two main themes were individual expression and worldly experience. During this period,
Europeans had the interest in the values of ancient Greece and Rome and described it as the
reawakening of the culture. Therefore, the term Renaissance was used for the movement. As the
movement progressed, it increased political stability, economic growth, education, and
cosmopolitanism. In addition, the study of language, literature, history, and philosophy began to
expand as knowledge increased. As a result, the Renaissance movement can be described as a great
influence on society. Eventually, the Renaissance movement led to humanism which focused on the
unique values of a person. Artists introduced many unique ideas during the Renaissance movement
which became a success to the society.
During the Renaissance movement, Leonardo da Vinci was considered to be the Renaissance man.

Two Vulnerable Populations and Two Nursing Theories Essay
From a healthcare perspective we see vulnerability as a person s susceptibility to disease, whether that
disease is from a mental, physical, or sociological standpoint. De Chesnay amp; Anderson (2012)
explain the idea of an entire population being vulnerable as a public health concept that refers to
vulnerability by virtue of status: that is, some groups are at risk at any given point in time relative to
other individuals or groups. The chronically mentally ill and the elderly go under this definition of
vulnerable populations and could be helped by two conceptual models of nursing. Because those with
mental illness usually have increased risked for being unable to identify, manage, or find ways to
maintain health I felt that Roger s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These therapies have the possibility to help chronically mentally ill patients to find ways to achieve
and maintain a harmony with their environment that would promote their physical and social health.
Orem s Self Care Deficit Theory views every individual as practicing self care, a set of learned
behaviors, to sustain life, maintain or restore functioning, and bring about a condition of well being.
(Creasia amp; Friberg 2011) The nurse uses her/his abilities to assist the patient to overcome current
self care deficits and help the patient achieve her/his best level of self care. As time passes many of the
elderly need more assistance with the activities of daily living. Taking care of themselves physically
becomes more difficult, sometimes there is decreased mental acuity, as well as a loss in social contact.
In every one of these areas the nurse assists the patient to achieve her/his highest level of self care.
This includes diet, eating, elimination, activity, social interaction, education, awareness of obligations,
and the promotion of health. Where possible the nurse will help the patient achieve self care. Since
there are no true cures to the aging process the nurse will be needed more and more

Anonymous Monkey Ninja Essay
Brief and Possibly Unnecessary Author s Note:
I was having some trouble coming up with new ideas last week for my free write, so I decided to write
a scene from my book that I hadn t yet, and incorporate one of the themes into that. However, I was
unaware that I would actually have to finish the story, and It had to be 500 words or less. Considering
the climax and conclusion of my book were probably several thousand words away from the free write
segment, I decided I ought to tell a different story.
So here it is. Enjoy!

Can I get a second witness to the monkey ninja?
Dude, calm down. maybe you left them in your car. someone suggested.
He knew they weren t there, but he checked anyway. He was pretty desperate now.
If his desk was a dangerous forest, then surely his car was the site of a nuclear detonation. He
remembered then that he had meant to clean it before the date.
Nathan threw all his rage into organizing. He might as well do it now, since the keys were nowhere in
sight. He collected wads of paper and wrappers from the floor and unearthed ancient artifacts from
beneath the seats. He even took time to straighten the glove box.
When he stood back and looked at his work, he couldn t help but feel a little proud. At least, his
mother would be proud, he thought.
He was proud, that is, until the memory of his original task came back to smack him in the face.
He dashed back into the office, his mind blank of all places they could be.
I still can t find them!
You spent a while out there, man. I thought you might have.
No,
He thought he d take one last glance at his office. He was running out of time.
But as soon as he entered the cubicle, his eyes latched on to the very object he was looking for. The
way the bright metal reflected the buzzing fluorescent lights, at that moment, was beautiful indeed.
Found em! he shouted in triumph, holding the jingling key ring high above his head. The soothing
sounds those keys made was the finest of music.
He would

Equine Therapy Pros And Cons
Equine Therapy People all over the world need therapy for a multitude of reasons, but do they always
know which method is best for them? There are countless different options for therapy, most people
just are not aware that they exist. Equine Therapy is a new form of therapy that can be used to treat
mental illnesses, personal afflictions and physical disabilities. Many people may have doubts on how a
horse can actually offer a reliable method for therapy, but that is just because they have not looked
into it long enough to actually make an educated decision. A copious amount of programs and options
for equine therapy in the U.S. are available. Statistics prove that equine therapy can be extremely

The one that comes to mind when people refer to equine therapy is riding. Patients can ride for
physical ailments (4) and behavioral disorders such as anger issues. When a child or adult has anger
issues, the horse will be able to tell and may shy away from the patient until he/she proves that they
will not hurt the animal (3). When a client needs to learn about empathy and anger management, a
horse can be a powerful motivator (3). As humans everyone just want to be accepted, so if a horse
denies someone in fear of getting hurt, the patient will become gentle and cautious with the animal to
try to gain acceptance. Working in stables can be useful for clients who may have a fear of horses but
still enjoy the animal (4). They could muck out stalls, brush them and even feed them. Many clients
enjoy just being in the pasture field with the animals and just walking alongside them (4). When it is
just the client and the horse out in the pasture field, the client is more likely to share what disturbs
them. Some patients simply want to read a book in the stalls with the animal (4). The client will start
to relax around the horses and will be more comfortable talking about where they hurt the most (3).
After admitting and discussing the main issue at hand, the counselor can then begin to help the client
piece his/her life back together (3). After sessions with the horses, the clients can all get

The Ultimate Change In The Ultimate Change
Ultimate Change
O. Henry s short story, A Retrieved Reformation, shows a man s journey through rehabilitation. In the
story, Jimmy Valentine is in jail for robbery. He is then allowed to leave in hope he has finally learned
from his past mistakes, and will stop robbing people to get what he desires. When Jimmy leaves, he
robs many more banks, but does not get caught. Jimmy then goes to a small town so the cops will not
be able to find him, and the town has a train station for him to make a quick getaway. When Jimmy
first arrives to the town, he sees a woman named Annabel Adams and everything changes. He knows
she will not like him if he keeps acting like his old self. Therefore, he decides he will finally change
for the better. He changes his name to Ralph Spencer and starts acting different. This short story
demonstrates change and how you affect people every day whether you realize it or not. At the
beginning of the coming of age story, when Jimmy gets let out of jail, we see how Jimmy has not
changed and he had went back to his old ways. To show this, the author explains multiple robberies
that happened within weeks of each other. Then, Ben Price, the detective trying to find who has been
robbing the banks, realized it was Jimmy Valentine who was back to his old ways. To show this, the
author wrote, Ben Price knew Jimmy s habits. He had learned them while working on the Springfield
case. Long jumps, quick get aways, no confederates, and a taste for good society

  • 2. Cultural And Linguistic Boundaries And Influence Survey design can raise issues that can traverse the cultural and linguistic boundaries and influence the survey questions selection and procedure. These issues can become more pressing and critical especially when surveys are conducted in support of vital entities such as government policies, program evaluations, human rights investigations and government policies. Survey accommodation to certain cultures and languages is an issue of importance and significance. There are logical reasons for these issues as survey participants can interpret things and respond differently according to the question order effects, cultural and language background. Also, the participants` understanding of the survey construction, intention, data usage and assurance of their information, can influence the designer`s approach of questions construction and organization (Blair Piccinino, 2005). The previous literature reviews shed the light on several aspects such as the survey design implications. The importance of the survey context becomes apparent when the researchers consider the situations where cultural and linguistic factors are involved. These factors can influence the design due to several reasons, Some researchers design the surveys from scratch for the purpose of using it in cultures and language settings, which are not their own. Language consideration is characteristic features of cognitive socialized skills that influence survey participants. This can result in social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti Research Paper Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer who was born in Naples. In 1733, he moved to Madrid, where he spent the remaining time of his life there and served Queen Maria Barbara. He composed his 555 well known keyboard sonatas for the queen during this period of time. These pieces were mostly written to be played on the harpsichord or the early pianofortes. Although most of the sonatas were composed in pairs, the D major sonatas, often performed together, formed a rare triptych of three sonatas. Sonata in D Major, K.491 is the second piece of the triptych, which was composed in 1756 1757. Similar to most of his other sonatas, Sonata in D major is in the binary form (AB AB). • 5. The Transition Times. Graduation Is One Example Of A Time The Transition Times Graduation is one example of a time of celebration and honor. It is the reward you receive for multiple years of difficult work and perseverance. It is also an extremely bittersweet occasion because often times you are required to make difficult decisions. Decisions that could take you away from everyone and everything you have ever known. This is known as a time of transition. Honestly, it seems a bit anticlimactic that after all the emotions and preparation you do beforehand is all summarized within a few short hours. This is how the majority of my fellow upcoming graduates are feeling right now, but I do not. I believe that in order to better understand these monumental occasions of transition, you must first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During high school you form both positive and negative relationships with people and learn a various assortment of life lessons. If I challenged myself to choose my top three picks on what life lessons I have learned I would say freedom, responsibility, and tolerance. I say that I have learned the lesson of freedom simply owing to the fact that this was my first taste of freedom. When you receive your driver s license and car or you are able to date for the first time you feel the absolutely exhilarating unbridled feeling of freedom. This feeling blossoms and flourishes for only a moment, because then it has company. Freedom is joined by the always rational and logical emotion responsibility. Responsibility is like the notification that forces you to go home in time for your curfew or the friend you forces you to stop at the stop sign or to not drink and drive. When freedom and responsibility work together, you are safe and you also have a great time growing up. When the two emotions combine together your chances of living to adulthood increase dramatically. The last life lesson I chose is most definitely not the least important. I have become more tolerant of not only people and their decisions but also with circumstances. This was not only the most difficult lesson I have had to learn, but it is the lesson that I am most thankful for due to the fact that I know that I will use it more and more frequently as I enter into the real world . ... It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong. With that statement, Montresor begins his tale of revenge deciding that the act must be slow and sweet and that in order to fully enjoy it, his adversary must be aware of his intentions. Hidden within those same few lines, lies not only this horrid plan, but also the true interest of its true author. In his Cask of Amontillado, Edgar Allen Poe reveals his supreme interest in the dark side of the human mind and heart. Much of what a story means, much of its effect on the reader depends on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is only concerned with attempting to understand the mind of Montresor as he commits the ultimate dark act of murder. Throughout the story, Montresor shows that the murder was what is now called in the first degree it was clearly preplanned and intentional. By giving [the attendants] orders not to stir from the house, Montresor shows that he was very aware of his actions. Even the placement of the bricks and mortar, as well as the clever concealment of the trowel reflect the final execution of a well thought out plan. In dialogue, Montresor also reveals his plan: Fortunato: the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough. Montresor: True true. Montresor says that it is true. Fortunato will not die of a cough, he will die at the hand of Montresor. The deep seated hatred necessary for the preplanned extinguishing of another s life shows this dark side which Poe so wishes to be understood. Poe seems to suggest that even if the readers have not physically carried out such a hideous act as that of Montresor, they have in their imaginations. Even the calm way the story is related by Montresor causes the reader to wander further into the mind of the murderer further into the dark side of the mind and of the heart. With the line for the half of a century no mortal has disturbed the bones, a new perspective on the story emerges. But even when the fact that the story was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Golden Age In The Elizabethan Era The Elizabethan era was a time full of superstition and persecution, however it was also the beginning of a new age, The Golden Age as it is commonly referred to. During this time the people of England were beginning to progress, in a scientific and artistic way. Music wasn t the only thing that was developing, science and philosophy were also flourishing. There was a reason that music began to become an everyday part of life under Queen Elizabeth s rule. The queen herself even had a musical background and it was well known that music was her favorite art form. She also took a great interest in supporting experienced musicians and composers. From Elizabeth s interest in the arts, her people went from generational family songs to reformed masterpieces from great men, such as William Byrd, Thomas Morley, and Thomas Weelkes. The society and culture that Queen Elizabeth helped create differentiates from many cultures we have learned about in class. In other cultures, such as China, someone who has career in the arts is typically seen as a lower social class citizen, whereas in England the making of an educated and upper class man must be fluent in musical theory. We can tell by an excerpt from The Compleat Gentleman written by Henry Peacham in 1622, that the basic role of a gentleman was to sing your part sure, and at first sight, withall, to play the same upon your viol, or exercise of the lute. During this time there was a wide variety of instruments used and some are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Compare And Contrast John Brown And Timothy Mcveigh Timothy McVeigh committed the most deadly act of domestic terrorism in United States history. His actions resulted in both outrage and fascination, and lead to significant inquiry into why he did what he did. Many at the time, already scared by the rising trends of Jihadist terrorism felt that McVeigh s actions were in large part something new, something atypical to the American experience. However, such was not the case. Terrorism has been prevalent throughout American history and tied to various trends and movements, including abolitionism. Ultimately John Brown and Timothy McVeigh have striking similarities, such as the presence of their action outside of the more established and organized groups of their respective movements and the media ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although he did not get to see it in his lifetime, John Brown s polarizing effect on the North and South helped encourage the outbreak of the Civil War, which would determine once and for all the fate of slavery. This, however, is not the case when it comes to McVeigh. When the Oklahoma City bombing is discussed, ideas regarding McVeigh s views were much more likely to be pushed to the side. Some of this could potentially be a result of attempts of people who could be potentially associated with McVeigh and his ideals (whether they be right wingers, verterans, etc.) to distance themselves from the event. This is perhaps best shown through examples of veterans insisting upon the wretchedness of McVeigh s actions. Such a distancing attempt, however, was also visible during John Brown s time. As mentioned in Thoreau s piece, many contemporary abolitionists attempted to distance themselves and their abolition movement from John Brown. Thus, the distance must result from a different cause. This cause is most likely the media. Although both John Brown and Timothy McVeigh had their actions highly publicized, only John Brown s was done so in the context of the largest movement on people s minds at the time: abolitionism. Some of the women were dragged off with physical force as their families wept, while others were actually sold to the army by their destitute families (Watanabe). Still other were officially drafted by the Japanese Imperial Army and believed they would be factory workers or nurses (Hwang in Schellstede 4). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The majority of Korean women seem to have come from lower class worker and farmer families. Korean and other Asian women were assigned to lower ranking soldiers, while Japanese and European women were reserved for higher ranking officers (Watanabe). This obviously portrays the condescending attitude the Japanese had toward Koreans. Japanese military leaders formulated the concept of comfort women in order to stop soldiers from committing sexual violence towards women they might encounter. Japanese Lieutenant General Okamura Yasuji proposed that comfort women should be shipped to Shanghai to solve the problem of 223 rapes reportedly committed by troops there (Kim). One former comfort woman reported that in some places, soldiers were so desperate for some kind of outlet for their sexual desires that they had intercourse with dogs (Kim in Schellstede 32). It is estimated that over 125 million forced sexual acts took place between Japanese soldiers and comfort women in the span of only five years (Kim). The Japanese military made soldiers pay to have sex with comfort women. The prices were as follows: 1.50 yen for privates, 2 yen for non commissioned officers, 2.50 yen for junior officers, and 3 yen for senior officers (Hicks 19). • 14. The Collapse Of The Soviet Union The collapse of the Soviet Union can ultimately be attributed to three broad, complex, and interconnected issues: The economy, Leadership, and Geography. All three of theses factors are interconnected and each contain several reasons why they contributed to the ultimate collapse of the Soviet Union. The first and most simple reason the Soviet Union failed can be attributed to their geographical challenges. The Soviet Union suffered two problems in regard to geographic challenges. Firstly the country itself was far too vast, and its influence spread too far for there to be an easy to spread authority (Suny). With such as large state to control there was realistically no feasible way that influence from Moscow could control a large territory from Central Asia to Eastern Europe. This is a territory that contained various amounts of ethnicities, religions, and cultures. In an obvious perspective larger an state gets the harder it is to be controlled. Analytically speaking it is rather impossible to control such a territory from a central authority. With the Soviet centrally commanded system, authority from Moscow could not be spread vastly without a consequential use of money and resources. Secondly The Soviet Union was blessed with an abundance of natural resources. At first glance it would be easy to view this abundance of resources as a blessing for a powerful nation. However from a historical angle the Soviet Union was trapped in resource curse. A resource curse being an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For many first time traders the Foreign Exchange market can seem very confusing. When someone trades on the foreign exchange market, they are buying once currency and selling another. In addition to the major pairs, there is also something called crosses (Kritzer, A. 2012). Cross pairs do not contain the US dollar as a currency, but contain other major currencies, For example the Euro and the Swiss Franc EUR/CHF. The last type of pair traded on the ForEx market is the exotics. Exotics are pairs that have one major currency, and another that is from an emerging market, such as the Singapore dollar SGD or South African rand ZAR (Kritzer, A. 2012). Why is Asia Different? The Relationship Between Parent And Family Parent s: The first step to ensuring your child s safety outside of the home is establishing a healthy family dynamic based around mutual trust and reliance on each other, to an extent. When you and your child have a relationship between yourselves that is healthy, you ensure that your child feels safe in the place that matters most; in their home. When a child feels safe in their home, among their family, then they are more likely to feel the can communicate when there is something happening in their lives outside the home that is bothering them or can prove harmful. Without this healthy dynamic, your child may withhold important information from you that could end up causing a drastic change in your child s wellbeing. As important as open communication is between parent and child, it is equally as important to set a solid set of rules for your child to follow. For example, younger children may not be allowed to cross the street or leave the yard without an adult with them. Without solid rules for children to follow, then the relationship between child and parent becomes too lax, and there is no sense of respect of child to parent. Without a sense of mutual respect between parent and child, the child will then feel that their parent has no knowledge of what is best for them; even though the rules their parent may try to enforce rules that are in their best interest to follow. As far as setting rules and punishments for your child, the ramifications should evolve as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Emily Dickinson s great poem, Much Madness is Divinest, expresses the true rebellious persona that Dickinson was from within and the sense of frustration she had at being a very intelligent woman living during a time where men were the much dominant. The poet uses this poem to reflect the anger she felt (although she was said to be very reserved and quiet spoken) towards the society she lived in. In her work Dickinson utilizes the concept of slant rhyme, a wide ranged use of diction, and tone setting to give us her thoughts in concern to the society that she much resented. It can be argued that Disraeli was the architect of reform during the late 1860 s and through 1867 reform act, mainly due to the fact that he realised that the conservative party might be seen as non reforming. To counter this he would expand the franchise and gain potential new voters. However there is also significant evidence that Lord Derby was the main architect of reform, mostly due to the fact that he had been part of the 1832 reform bill and when he returned to power in 1866 he took the lead in presenting the conservative reform bill. The first, Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off. The second principle, The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership. I also identify with Colin Powell s seventeenth principle, Have fun in your command. Don t always run at a breakneck pace. Take leave when you ve earned it: Spend time with your families. Corollary: Surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves, those who work hard and play hard. Colin Powell s first principle was something I deal with daily. I approve or disapprove rations requests for all the Indiana Army National Guard units and submit their requests to the state approved contracted vendor. The vendor has a timeline to which they can process the orders and work with their vendors to get ration items into their warehouse. The State Food Service SOP specifies the timelines for ration requests when using the Army Food Management System (AFMIS). If a unit does not meet the time requirements for our state vendor, then I will disapprove the request. I will give the unit limited choices for other types of rations, usually Tailored Operational Training Rations (TOTM), similar to MRE s. The Programme for International Student Assessment, also known as PISA, is an international organization which measures performance of high school students throughout the world (United States, Highlights from PISA iii), and the results of its most recent series of examinations have shown that high school students in the United States are desperately trailing behind their peers in the rest of the developed world (United States, Highlights from PISA 12). Finland, for example, requires a grueling matriculation exam in order to pass high school, composed of one native language test and three other tests chosen by the test taker, in a broad range of subjects such as physics, philosophy, history, foreign languages and mathematics exams of varying difficulty (Finland). Results from the matriculation exams determine the student s prospects for postsecondary education, which is free for Finnish citizens (Gamerman). One consequence of Finland s intense matriculation exams is that students arrive at universities fully prepared for their studies, and students who do not wish to continue on into college have sufficient preparation for a career. Japan, on the other hand, has an entirely different method of encouraging its students to perform well in school. Rather than a comprehensive high school exit exam, Japanese universities each have their own uniquely arduous entrance exams, (Okano and Tsuchiya 114). The exams are highly competitive, so there is great pressure on the student to perform well in order to get into the university of the student s choosing. High schools in Japan help to prepare students for university entrance exams, and juku, or cram schools are another popular method of preparing for the exams (Okano and Tsuchiya 60). By putting a great deal of responsibility on the student, the Japanese system encourages students to achieve on their own by preparing for entrance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His traumatic life is explained through his dark writing, and the way he explains the story. Poe s vivid writing style is constantly shown through his unique literary techniques. In Poe s short story The Cask of Amontillado , he describes the antagonist (Fortunato) as he greets him, He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking too much. (234) Since Poe s writing is so vivid in the detail, the imagery in this quote can almost make the reader feel how Fortunato is greeting him. Did it make one want to stop in their tracts and find out more? Did it move one to any action, or was it simply informative. I have seen the traffic lady put more emotion in to her report each morning that DeMarco did hers. Perhaps it was her way of trying to remain neutral to the situation, but it came across as cold and careless instead. Her lack of emotion wouldn t make anyone stop in his or her tracks and pay attention. Stewart s report on the other hand, made you stop everything you were doing and focus intently on the screen. This can include direct or indirect contact with the customer. Suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers make up some of the parts of a supply chain that are needed to fill a customer s order. One of the major parts of the supply chain is the transportation of the raw material or the finished product. In particular, Nikhil doesn t always respect his family s culture which proves to be very challenging for Ashima and Ashoke because they remain attached to that culture when they move and want him to grow up a certain way. Gilgamesh Female Characters In this paper, I am going to analyze the female characters that caught my attention the most in the three stories The Epic of Gilgamesh, Thousand and One Nights, and Candide. They all are important characters in each of the stories and their influence in the story is to help. These stories also depict how women were being treated during these times such as being used for their bodies and wisdom. The characters that I will be analyzing in the paper are Shamhat, Ishtar, Shiduri, Sharazad, the Old Woman, and Cunegonde. In all three stories, they mostly share the same depictions of the role of women and how women weren t really important besides their bodies. To start off, there were three characters from The Epic of Gilgamesh that interested me, so I will begin by analyzing them. The first character was Shamhat. She was a hierodule, temple prostitute, that Gilgamesh used to help civilize Enkidu. Besides being a prostitute, she caught my attention because of her caring personality and generosity. She did things that she wasn t obligated to do such as taking off some of her clothing to cloth Enkidu. She also went out of her way to teach Enkidu how to eat, dress himself, and keep himself groomed like a human being should. Pathway Of Igf-1 Pathway The insulin/IGF 1 pathway which plays a major role in the control of lifespan and aging in animals and humans includes a lot of genes if any gene transformed with single mutation the IGF 1 pathway can increase lifespan and cause human longevity to remain active and youthful much longer than normal. As in different species, yeast, nematodes and fruit flies there are genes homologous with mammalian genes that control in IGF 1 pathway and mutation in any one of them may be affected on lifespan (Tatar et al., 2003). Much of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These pathways are more complex than invertebrate. Mutations that in GH deficiency or in growth hormone receptors cause decreased size, lower insulin levels, increased stress resistance and extend lifespan (Bartke, 2008). Whereas GH is mediated through IGF 1 and effect on lifespan in these mice may be mediated by this pathway. Heterozygous deletion mutations of the IGF 1 receptor (IGF1R) gene causes a little reduction in size but a similar phenotype of improved stress resistance and longevity in females only (Holzenberger et al., 2003). But in dogs, there is no evidence that IGF 1 signaling regulates lifespan because dog breeds have a strong inverse correlation with body size (Patronek et al., 1997). Derangement of the insulin receptor (INSR) gene in most tissues leads to insulin resistance and shortened lifespan in mice (Okamoto and Accili, 2003); but homozygous deletion mutation in this gene specific to fat cells have the extended lifespan in both sexes (Bluher et al., 2003). These results indicate that tissue specific effects are important for these pathways. Where a knockout of the downstream signaling adapter protein (IRS1) also resulted in increased lifespan (Selman et al., 2008). There are several mechanisms demonstrated that the IGF 1 may affect aging with DAF 16/FOXO which stimulates the transcription of heat shock protein genes that related to stress resistance (Murphy et al., 2003). Whether small disagreements created from minor issues, to mediocre arguments based on daily matters, to serious incidents that can reflect relationship taboos, it is a couple s perception and understanding of each other that can strengthen or weaken their union. The poem How It Will End by Denise Duhamel portrays two couples involved in similar matters as those previously described. One couple appears to be far from having a happy day at the beach; they re arguing, the female s body language reveals a need for acceptance, distance, and rejection. The second couple s belief of what is stirring and their relationship comparison based on these thoughts, solidifies the underlying truth that marriage is not easy. Lines 20 to 21: I start to coach the girl to leave her no good lifeguard, but my husband predicts he ll never leave, are depicting the couple s mirroring on what they would actually do in this situation. The relationship judgement concept continues in lines 23 through 25 with That s your problem you think every fight is funny. You never take her seriously, and he says, You never even give a guy a chance and you re always nagging where a compromise issue is portrayed this time, obviously on both couples. Relationships require you to extend yourself for the sake of the other, that is collectively understanding each other s needs, accept mistakes, and practice forgiveness. Should relationships be compared to others? Is the concept of assumption safe for a union? Is proof necessary for a couple to be happy? Nothing good ever comes of comparing your relationship to someone else s. It is better to acknowledge that each bond is unique and has its strengths and weaknesses. One of the most important reasons not to compare relationships is that you re not seeing the full picture. Furthermore, in the last two lines of the poem: She has her arms around his neck and is crying into his shoulder, He whisks her up into his hut.
