work it out so quickly in our heads that we don t consciously recognize the procedures that we are
using to solve the problem. For us, subtractionseems like something that has been ingrained in our
thinking since the first day of elementary school. Not surprisingly, numbers and subtraction and

Then, she counts down from five to three and writes down the three underneath, understanding that
the number she ended on was the final amount; this is an example of cardinality. When Gretchen
was finished, she came up with the amount 53, which is incorrect. Gretchen probably chose this
method first because it is taught as the standard and the best method to use to do subtraction.
Even though the answer she finds is incorrect, Gretchen seems to trust the answer because of the
validity that has been placed on this method, even though she made a mistake. The second
method Gretchen uses is with base ten blocks, using a physical model to represent the problem.
As Gretchen arranges the blocks into groups of 70 and of 23, she displays a grasp of the concept
of tens and ones. Gretchen uses the grouping of 23 to have a physical representation of what
needs to be taken away from 70 so that she can match up the quantities. Gretchen is also showing
subitizing as she connects the numbers with a physical amount. She takes two tens away for
twenty, and then Gretchen counts off 1, 2, 3 from one of the remaining tens. Instead of replacing
the ten with seven ones, Gretchen is able to visualize the seven that remain and say that her
answer is 47. The use of base ten blocks probably makes sense to Gretchen because they are

The power of the poet is not only to convey an everyday scene into a literary portrait of words, but
also to interweave this scene into an underlying theme. The only tool the poet has to wield is the
word. Through a careful placement and selection of words, the poet can hopefully make his point
clear, but not blatantly obvious. Common themes of poems are life, death, or the conflicting forces
thereto. This theme could never possibly be overused because of the endless and limitless ways of
portraying life or death through the use of different words.

In the second stanza, Stafford s diction conjures a graphic image of the carcass with words like
stiffened , cold and referring to the carcass as a heap . The language itself conveys the carcass as
though it had never lived before, but instead, always remained dead.
As mentioned in the title and the first line, Traveling Through the Dark , the darkness creates a
tense and disoriented setting, for the narrator is confused on what exactly to do with the carcass.
The darkness can also symbolize the insensitivity of man towards nature, a moral darkness. The
syntax of the first line is also interesting in that it is not told that the deer is dead until the
beginning of the second line, so the poem may start off almost as a happy one until discovered
that the deer is in fact dead. The word dead is used to kick off the second line, which creates a
thud like sound when read aloud.
The third stanza introduces the fawn within the doe, a sharp contrast between the scene of
darkness and death with life and birth. However, this concept of birth and life is nothing to be
celebrated, for Stafford reveals this discovery in a negative tone:
My fingers touching her side brought me the reason
her side was warm, her fawn lay there waiting,
alive, still, never to be born.
Beside that mountain road, I hesitated.
With the living fawn waiting for a birth that would never come, the reader cannot help but feel
sympathy

Although Cinder and Cinderella have many similarities, there are also differences. They have the
same plot, the same theme and have more differences than similarities. But Cinderella is a movie
and cinder is book. Although Cinder has more in the book I think Cinderella has a lot more than

Imagine a five year old girl, her birthday is a few weeks away and her mom is questioning her
about toys she would like to have. She tells her mom she wants a race track and the newest Hot
Wheels set. Her mother is quick discourage this request and suggests asking for something more
girly because race cars are for boys. The little girl is disappointed but abides by her mother s
request and instead asks for a new doll house. In our current culture, there is a huge difference
between what is considered to be for girls or boys. From birth, children are told what colors and
styles of clothing they wear, what toys they should play with, and emotions they should feel.
Often, girls are told they cannot play with toys considered to be for boys and boys are told they
are not allowed to play with toys considered to be for girls. Children who do decide they want to
play with the toys not traditionally for their gender are often scolded by family members, pushing
the children back to their gender specific toys. In early childhood the decisions that determine who
a child is to be are made by their parents or guardians. Gender socialization starts at birth and
continues from adolescence, to adulthood, causing specific and detrimental differences in the way
the genders behave. Before one can dissect gender socialization and gender roleexpectations in
