Characteristics Of Visual Soccer Analytics
2Visual Soccer Analytics: Understanding the Characteristics of Collective Team Movement Based
on Feature Driven Analysis and Abstraction
This paper[3] proposes a novel visual analysis system for interactive identification of soccer
patterns and game situations that are of interest to a sports analyst. It does this by building on a pre
existing data driven system and improving it by adding semantic features defined along with a
soccer domain expert. The new application provides visualizations to show the features and their
ranking over time, and plots this change of game play situations which are useful for interpreting
complex game situations. A considerable improvement of the new system is that it involves a
learning stage where user and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using this system, analysts can interactively re rank derived features or select combinations of
features, based on which the computation of interesting situations is reorganized and the
visualization refreshed. More importantly, visual analytics allows to better include the domain
knowledge in the analysis compared to the basic automated approaches.
The usefulness of this approach is then evaluated in a two stage qualitative user study by using two
professional video analysts as users.
The authors relate their work directly to the recent work of Janetzko[4] who uses a similar visual
analytics approach to distinguish between potentially interesting and non interesting events.
Unfortunately, Janetzko s visual system did not include game context or interaction information
regarding the classified interesting game situations. The authors also relate their system with the
work of other sports visualizations approaches. One such approach that is worth mentioning is the
work of Perin[5] who presents a hybrid version of rank chart and slope graph visualizations
positions the teams with respect to their performance and time during a season this system is able
to show the magnitude of gaps between teams and minimize the overlap.
The paper first discusses previous related work involving automating approaches. Then the authors

Research Paper On Israel Culture
Israel
SSG Dustin L. Ingram
SLC 13P Class 001 16 The Army s field manual on Counterinsurgency defines Culture as a system
of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope
with their world and with one another ( Counterinsurgency , 2006, para. 3 37). The culture of any
particular group is evolving all the time due to it being a product of fluid characteristics that form
and shape that culture. Some cultures evolve quickly while others take much longer to evolve due
to some inherent rigidity. Israel fits on both sides of this scale and is very interesting to examine
for one particular reason, Israel is a country formed relatively recently by a culture group that has
been around for centuries. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a total population of 8,049,314 people, they are a relatively small country but due to the
size of Israel, about 92% of these people live in urban areas (The World Factbook, n.d.). This fact
plays a large role in the Israeli economy. With so much of the country being urban only about
2.5% of their GDP comes from agriculture while the remaining 97.5% is from the Service and
Industry sectors that are more common in urban areas (The World Factbook, n.d.). Religion also
plays a huge part in shaping the culture of the Israelis with about 75% of the population being
Jewish. This not only shapes the more apparent aspects of the Israeli culture like their values,
beliefs, and traditions but also effects things like their diet and language which both have their
roots in the Jewish religion. In fact, Israel is the only country that Hebrew is the official
language. Not everything within the Israeli culture however, centers on the Jewish religion. The
people of Israel also value fairness and freedom from religious persecution so much that their
court systems are set up in three different branches to cover Christian, Muslim, and Jewish cases
to ensure that there is no religious bias in their legal system. This idea is both a product of the fact
that Israel is home to about 25% non Jewish residents and the fact that the Israeli people know
firsthand the effects of religious

THE LINK BETWEEN STOCK PRICES AND THE ECONOMY
Economic theory proposes that there should be a strong link between economic activity and stock
prices, given that its price is the discounted present value of the firm s payout. If this payout is
finally a function of real activity, such a link should exist.
There are several theoretical propositions suggesting how stock prices can have a direct impact on
economic output, which further strengthens the link amongst these two variables.
1.The first link was proposed by Tobin in 1969. The focus is on the impact that share prices have
on the cost of capital. The coefficient that captures this is called Tobin s Q, which is given by
the ratio of market value of current capital to the cost of replacement capital. When the prices of
shares are high, the value of the firm to the replacement cost of its capital is also high i.e., the
Tobin s Q is also high. Furthermore, this leads to rise in investment expenditure and thus causes a
rise in the aggregate economic output as for firms it is easier to finance their investment
expenditures. This is because investment would be simpler as it would require a lower share
offering in a situation of a higher price for

of the few wealthy Chinese business owners, indigenous Indonesians felt that the Chinese people

to property damage, Chinese women were a target for brutal rapes and murders. (Turner, 2007)

Obama Care Health Crisis
There have been many deaths going on around the United States and it has been caused by
people s health. Your health should be the main thing you are concerned about so if you haven t
already, you should go for a checkup. In 1980 healthcare expenditures were $256 billion,
according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. We become so involved in buying
fast foods when it is not good for the health. A serious illness can lead to financial ruin if you do
not have insurance. For those who do not have insurance can get Obamacare. It is the same as

Essay on Capturing and Deploying an Image
The focus of this paper will be installing an operating system over a network to one or many
computers by creating an image. There are multiple ways to install an operating system on a
computer. The way that is chosen depends on the installer s situation. One scenario would be if the
installer is only dealing with a single computer that needs an operating system installed. The other
scenario is if there are many computers that need operating systems installed at one time. An
operating system is a set of programs that manage computer hardware resources and provide
common services for application software. (Operating Systems) Without the operating system, a

Using an image is more convenient because the work is done for you once the image has been
deployed. These two methods of installation on a single computer would most likely take place if
you are dealing with your own personal computer or you re helping a friend out. The second
scenario is the need to install an operating system on multiple computers at one time. A situation
such as this would most likely occur in the workplace. For example, if a company is upgrading
from one operating system to another, the IT department would need to deploy an image to all
of the new computers to install the new operating system in a timely fashion. Just like the first
scenario, a reference computer would need to be created that is completely configured according
to the companies needs and an image would then need to be created from that computer. This
image would be saved and be able to be deployed to all of the computers simultaneously. The way
the company chooses to deploy an image can vary from keeping the image on the company s
server or stored on a separate laptop and connecting that laptop to the target computers. The
introduction of being able to create an image and deploy it to multiple computers is a lifesaver for
IT technicians and companies. This method saves time

Why Do Finches Survive
In the Galapagos Islands there is an island named, Daphne Major, this island plays as the host of
the Galapagos finches. In 1976 1977 there was an absolute near extinction of these finches. This
is because of the drought of 1976 and 1977 (see figure 1). While the drought made the Finch
population dwindle there was a hidden trait that was helping some survive, and that is beak size.
Why did the larger beaks help those fortunate Finches survive? Because the only plants that
survived where plants like the Tribulus, which produces hard shelled seeds. While there was an
abundance of hard shelled seeds there was a shortage of soft shelled seeds. The finches that had
the larger beaks weighed more, for example, survivors weighed approx. 12.5g to 17.5g with beak
sizes going from 10.5 to 13.6(for evidence see figure 2. This reduced the population because the
Finch s with the smaller beaks couldn t open the harder seeds and had to scavenge for soft seeds
which were very rare. The finches with small beaks, then died from starvation... Show more content

Short beaked finches have less food source because they can t open hard seeds. Because of that
they die off from starvation. Birds with small beaks couldn t open the hard seeds so they had no

eat see figure 3.
In conclusion the Galapagos Finches suffered a mass near extinction, although there was a secret
weapon the survivors had, beak size. The beak size not only helped the survivors survive, but it
helped them eat, see figure 2. The rainfall amount (see figure 1) played a major role in the
extinction of the finches by taking out the food sources. Lastly the Galapagos finches went to the
urge of extinction, but thankfully they were not all taken out by the lessened

An analysis of how dikh (†justice’) and its associated...
An analysis of how dikh ( justice ) and its associated values are presented and translated in two
passages from Sophocles: Electra.
What broader issues are raised and how would these be investigated further? The concept of dikh,
or justice has many subtle meanings and variations in Ancient Greek ranging from the primary
definition given in LS (Liddell and Scotts, Greek English Lexicon , Intermediate,
1889, page 202) of custom to right, judgement, lawsuit, penalty and vengeance. The OCD
(Hornblower S, Oxford Classical Dictionary, 1996,
Page 469) reference to Likh describes it as the, personification of justice and the daughter of Zeus
that, reports men s wrongdoing to
Zeus .
Sophocles rendition of the tragic play ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is strange, especially as the remaining children conspire and eventually murder those
responsible for their father s death. They presumably feel otherwise. In just this one passage justice
is used to mean custom, just, revenge and vengeance.
The second extract follows immediately after the news of Orestes death
(Ibid., pg 91) when Clytaemnestra, after a brief moment of sorrow is joyous at the news that her
life is now safe. In contrast we see that
Electra is devastated (Ibid., line 789) at the news. The idea of justice and revenge is brought to a
climax here as Clytaemnestra feels that, Justice is done to him . Would this be justice to Orestes
for not doing his duty or to Agamemnon for sacrificing his child? This compares well with the
previous passage where Clytaemnestra accuses
Electra of not doing her duty (Ibid., pg 84, line 526). Electra cries out to Likh, Goddess of
Vengeance, hear and speak for the dead .
It is clear from the many interpretations of dikh and its use in
Sophocles Electra that other, broader issues can be raised. The very concepts of justice, revenge,
honour and custom are exposed in detail. Understanding these issues and the language used requires
further study of the period, language, laws, customs and traditions.
The most important issue raised by this play is that of how do we (or more specifically the Greeks
watching the play) feel about matricide

A Report On Financial Institutions
Overview:
Financial institutions continues to be challenged by the inherent risks that are associated to the loss
of customer data through the compromise of security controls. As Information Security continues to
grow, the lack of effective security controls such as authentication continues to one of the key
components leading to data breaches across all industries.
For this purpose, SecureKey contracted with a leading independent security governance, risk
management and compliance (GRC) firm Coalfire Systems, Inc., to provide a security review of
their SecureKey briidge.net Connect solution.
Given that, in the age of Internet banking, recent data breaches continue to raise security awareness.
Consequently, many financial institutions are relying on guidance provided by the Federal
Financial Institutions Examination Council ( FFIEC ), in effort to prevent the risk of identity theft
and fraudulent transactions.
Our assessment of the SecureKey briidge.net Connect solution considered FFIEC requirements for
authentication in an Internet Banking Environment. The objectives of our security review included:
1.An assessment of the overall design and architecture of the SecureKey briidge.net Connect
solution;
2.Technical evaluations of SecureKey s mobile and web applications authentication capabilities; and
3.Monitoring network traffic to confirm that fields which are configured for encryption do not
appear to be transmitting clear text data.

Religion In The Decameron
Religion
Boccaccio also infused The Decameron with his opinions on the Catholic church, which even at
that time was Italy s primary religious institution. Catholicism may have been popular, but
Boccaccio was very blatant in showing that he did not approve of the Church s conduct. In The
Decameron, religion was practiced by fools, the church was a breeding ground for mischief, and
marriage was a transaction devoid of meaning.
Perhaps the most foolish characters readers could come across in The Decameron were Friar
Alberto and Monna Lisetta. Boccaccio masterfully parodied the Church by introducing Friar
Alberto as a former con man who moved to Venice and became a priest: already, Boccaccio has
criticized the vetting process for potential religious officials. Monna Lisetta, the next character
introduced, is a vain, airheaded devotee of the angel Gabriel. By having these silly characters
meet in a religious setting, Boccaccio mocked the Catholics of his day, especially once Friar
Alberto used his credibility as a man of God to trick the gullible Monna Lisetta into having sex
with Gabriel, who would be possessing the friar s own body. Boccaccio could hardly be more
derisive toward the Church than with this tragic story.
But Friar Alberto and Monna Lisetta were not Boccaccio s only example of mischief that had its
roots in a church: the wife of Pietro di Vinciolo essentially asked a friend to arrange extramarital
liaisons for her in exchange for a piece of jerky. According

Canyon Descriptive Writing
It was 1 hour before dawn. The thick gloomy grey blanket rolled through the towering canyon.
The canyon walls loomed overhead as the razor blade ridges were sticking out. At the far end of
the dark misty canyon is where the wall rose. The high reaching wall outstretched the length of the
canyon leaving an impenetrable metal wall. A slight breeze whirled through the bottom of the
treacherous canyon lifting the smell of the rotting dead. The screeching screams and shrieks of the
savage demons were heard from the far.
On top of the wall, the nervous army scattered around trying to get in position. Grabbing their
weapons and clutching them till their hands went white with fear. They could hear the screeching

In a society, crime is inevitable. Crime has its effect to the society s moral and behavioral
standard because it distinguishes the line between right and wrong. Since the society transform
from an agricultural and domestic to a modern society, more people are educated. This
transformation created different classes in a society, upper class, middle class and lower class.
Karl Marx suggested that capitalism inherent a class system in which class relations are
characterized by conflict. Although owners of capital and workers are dependent on the other the
capitalists require labours to produce products; where workers need wages from the owners the
dependency is highly unbalanced (Giddens, 2009). Therefore, workers have been living under...

the norms and do not commit crime. Achieve any moral consensus is difficult, everyone have

Title: Best gap wedge
With the short game accounting for more than 50% of shots you play in a round, improving your
wedge play is the first step to shooting a lower score. The wedge is the most important aspect when
playing golf. Acting as the goalkeepers of our game by saving us shots from both turf and sand, golf
wedges come in various lofts, finishes, bounce and grinds to help us get closer to the pin from
anywhere inside of 125 yards. Gap wedges range in loft from 50 to 55 degrees and are a
compromise between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. A gap wedge is particularly critical to use
today because the 5 degree difference in degrees between the SW and PW in the 1960s has now
grown to exactly 10 degrees. This has made room for golf club companies to respond by inventing
a new club to fill the gap , and of course, encourage us to buy more products.

What Every American Should Know By Eric Liu
Interpretative essay
What every American should know by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy
and its place in modern America. It takes on a convincing argument against E.D. Hirsch s book on
the same which included some 5000 things that he thought define cultural literacy and every
American should know. Liu argues that America has changed over time, becoming more
multicultural, and to capture the cultural literacy of the country, no one person should sit down and
come up with what they think everyone else should know. Instead he suggests that in order to
capture the view of the nation, every American should be involved in the making of the list. The
most engaging part of this article is Liu s idea that this new list that is crowd sourced should
always change according to the times. It should not be cast in stone because things in this day
and age change really fast; what is a hit this month will be old news in the next one. This is what
cultural literacy really is; keeping up with what is going on around you and being open to learn
new things as they emerge. This can also be said of education; in order to stay educated in any
field, you have to be in the know of in terms of new developments.
The conversation and debates on cultural literacy should continue in every place in America since
it helps us to understand and be tolerant of other cultures around us (Gay 2010). When we are
familiar with all or some of the things that define America as a culture,

Ecological Benefits Of Forest Fires
Forest Fires Forest fires are part of nature that will always keep on occurring, and they can be
very disastrous. In fact most forest fires are started by humans, when they don t know it.
However, forest fires are necessary for plants health, by offering many ecological benefits. There
are also actual forests fires that are permitted to burn that are not fought for that purpose. Then
again, if forest fires occur and are not permitted, firefighters need to take action in their many
ways. Therefore, forests fires often start by humans, has many ecological benefits, and are
fought in many ways. Ecological Benefits Many people think of forest fires as bad and
disastrous as figure 1 shows, but what they don t know is that forest fires have great benefits to
the environment. Some say that large forest fires are like shots of adrenaline that stimulate
biodiversity (Robbins). Without these fires many plants would not be able to grow in their
natural way. Those fires recycle nutrients, and create substances that plants need for growth.
Fires also clear trees and some vegetation that can prevent new tree growth. In fact, some species
of Pine and Oak trees grow best when forest fires occur (Parker). Also, some tree species need
very high temperatures for their seeds to sprout (Cooper). Foresters can actually permit certain
forest fires to occur due to all the ecological benefits. These fires are set by firemen in safe
conditions far from human life with low winds and high humidity

Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King, Jr. s Justification of Defying Unjust Laws
In his famous essay, Letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr. cites conscience as a
guide to obeying just laws and defying unjust laws. In the same way, Henry David Thoreau wrote
in his famous essay, Civil Disobedience, that people should do what their conscience tells them
and not obey unjust laws. The positions of the two writers are very close; they use a common
theme of conscience, and they use a similar rhetorical appeal of ethos. In Civil Disobedience
Thoreau claims that men should act from their conscience. Thoreau believed it was the duty of a
person to disobey the law if his conscience says that the law is unjust. He ... Show more content on

He disagreed with other American people who believed the majority should change the law first
because it is a worse thing to disobey the law than to do what an unjust law says to do. Thoreau
wrote that breaking the unjust laws is better: Break the law. Let your life be a counter friction to
stop the machine (Thoreau, P. 18). However, Thoreau did not think people should be criminals.
He thinks a criminal is a person who disobeys the law but will not be responsible for that. If a
person disobeys an unjust law, Thoreau thinks that the person must do that, so all people can see he
is disobeying the law because it is unjust. Then the person must accept what happens to him for
disobeying the law.
Thoreau wrote that people must be willing to go to jail if they want to change a law by
disobeying the law. Thoreau went to jail instead of paying for his taxes because he believed the
government used the money for unjust things. This is how Henry Thoreau thinks people can
change unjust laws. He thought that if people willingly would to go to jail and quit their jobs,
then the revolution will take a place and reform will come. Thoreau was willing to go to jail to
change unjust laws because of his conscience.
King s position on unjust laws was very close to Thoreau s position on unjust laws. In his famous
letter written when he was in jail, Letter from Birmingham Jail, King wrote to the ministers who
did not like his protests to desegregate the city of

Communism In America Essay
Despite what my opponent would have you believe, communism is not a danger to America
meaning that Nixon, McCarthy, and the HUAC are all unnecessary. Firstly, a brief explanation of
some of the terms I will be using. Capitalism is an economic system where businesses and the
means of production are owned by private individuals for profit. In a socialist economy, the means
of productionare owned by the community as a whole and individuals get rewarded for their work
based on the following principle: from each according to his ability, to each according to his
contribution. In communism, items are divided up based on, from each according to his ability, to
each according to his need. Finally, I will use the terms proletariat and bourgeoisie.... Show more

There is a difference between a country and the economic theory that it is currently using (reminder,
the USSR is not communist nor is it socialist).
Fourthly, suppressing an idea from America is the least American action you could do. In America,
free speech is a highly valued freedom, and, to quote Benjamin Franklin, Those who would give up
essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety (all
perceived threats from communism are not actual threats since the threats would be coming from
the USSR). Freedom of speech is an essential liberty.
Fifthly, all perceived danger from the USSR is nowhere near the amount of actual danger they are
in because of us. America was the first to use a nuclear bomb in war, and we have a general
intolerance for the USSR. Combined, this is frightening.
Finally, Joseph McCarthy and Richard Nixon have accused both innocent and guilty people of
communism and/or being a spy for the USSR because of their communism.
To recap, Senators McCarthy and Nixon have attacked innocent people for being communist spies
since they are possibly communist for a country that isn t even communist and tried to suppress a
simple idea, thereby proving that they deserve neither liberty nor safety, all in the name of political

Father Stereotypes
Negativity Towards Fathers: Incapable Stereotype
Fathers have been degraded in many movies, television shows, and commercials as incapable
and incompetent. Stereotypes are socially constructed by society and the media. As humans
tend to label people by what we are taught and see through the media. This stereotype arrived
from the 1950 s and 1960 s sitcoms that relied on the incapable father to keep the viewers
entertained. The sitcoms in that day and age featured a 5 o clock dad...with a newspaper as a
face (Quindlen 101). In the 1950 s and 1960 s sitcoms fathers would be portrayed as coming home
from work at 5 o clock and sitting on the couch reading the newspaper and most likely drinking
beer waiting on dinner. At this time period the fathers... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As social media has grown over the past few years so have the use of the incapable father
stereotype and all round every stereotype. As social media exploded new ways of expressing the
incapable stereotype online videos show fathers incapability in the household, not being able to
take care of the kids or clean the house and other household task. Memes and other pictures have
surfaced the social media buzz over the incapable father highlighting how fathers are seen as
solely for going to work and coming home and sitting on the couch and drinking beer. Much like
the way Peter Griffin is shown in Family Guy. Peter is shown in many episodes watching
television with a beer in his hands telling Louis to do something for him. Many fathers can very
well balance their work life and life at home. Fathers see that they are not supposed to be able to
handle both work and home but with many more women working they have to pick up the extra
task in the house to make things work. Many fathers are fighting the stereotype when it is shown in
commercials and various television shows. Saying that the times are different than in the 1950 s
and 1960 s when the stereotype was maybe more true than it is today. It is known that now more
women are out working that in the past leaving more men to help with the kids and household
work. Peter in Family Guy is shown as evidence that the media today does not see fathers as the
head of the household and fills them with a lack of faith that people see. Although the stereotype is
still famous in the entertainment world as Family Guy is still reviving great numbers, society may
stray away from the stereotype in the

Essay on Logic and Moral Dilemmas
Logic and Moral Dilemmas
ABSTRACT: Logic is of great importance for the philosophy of education. In particular, logic
provides a rational and critical approach in ethics, helping us understand the nature of moral
dilemmas. Some suggest that all moral dilemmas result from some kind of inconsistency in the
moral rules. Unsolvable moral situations simply reflect implicit inconsistencies in our existing
moral code. If we are to remain moral as well as logical, then we must restore consistency to our
code. This is accomplished by adding exception clauses to current principles, and giving priorities
to some principles over others, or by some other device. I argue that we must accept moral dilemmas
as an essential part of real life reality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From this point of view dilemmas are so to say merely apparent rather than real.
However it seems that a complete and consistent system of moral rules is impossible not as a
matter of fact but also as a matter of principle. Indeed, at least some moral statements are the
statements concerning values. Further, according to the Moore s axiological thesis , whether
these statements are true depends on two factors: the set of alternatives which we are
evaluating, and the scale of values which we rate them. And from the theory of social choice we
know that it is possible that each of some compared alternatives (in our case, ways of action) be
no better than others in some respect, and also that there be no respect in which they are equally
good or equally bad, and so on, and so forth ( the Condorcet s effect ).
Thus we ought to accept moral dilemmas as an essential part of real life reality.
In order to philosophize, the philosopher of education can seldom turn to just one branch of
philosophy. For he needs theory of knowledge, ethics, social philosophy, philosophical
anthropology, philosophy of language, philosophy of history, philosophy of science and technology,
etc. And among them logic is of great significance. For example we reveal relations between
different spheres of educational

Psychoanalytic Theories And Techniques That Can Be Utilized
In the field of Psychology, there are many theories and techniques that can be utilized. Some
counselors might choose to use one or more of these theories and techniques, but some will choose
to use only one. After learning about the different theories and techniques, I have chosen the
Psychoanalytic Theory as my personal theoretical orientation. The reason I chose Psychoanalysisis
because I feel that it best suits me. What seems to be most intriguing to me about Psychoanalysis is
that its main focus is on your conscious and unconscious mind. I enjoy using techniques in order to
find out what information lies within your conscious and unconscious and for this reason, I feel
Psychoanalysis best fits my personality. Psychoanalysis was the first theory that I seemed to show
a very big interest in because of the way in which it deals with the conscious and unconscious
mind. Our conscious mind is one that contains information, feelings or actions that we are aware of
whereas our unconscious mind is one that contains information, feelings or actions that we are not
aware of. We may act a certain way or dreamabout a particular incident, but not have any
consciousness as to why this is occurring. I took a very big interest in this because I know for
myself that there are things within my unconscious that I am not aware of. Not only do I feel that
it pertains to myself, but when I talk to a lot of my friends and they express their feelings or such

Persuasive Essay On Distracted Driving
The state of Colorado is NOT doing enough to prevent distracted driving, especially among tech
savvy millennials who ignore safety precautions set by the government in order to reduce the
amount of accidents each year from careless drivers. Despite road signs and an increased cost on
distracted driving tickets it is still technically legal to text and drive in the state of Colorado. In July
of 2017, the government decided that using handheld devices while drivingis considered safe unless
the driver is being careless or reckless. What government officials refuse to acknowledge is that it
takes a fraction of a second to permanently ruin your life or someone else s. Studies have shown
that distracted driving delays the body s ability to reach to urgent situations by an average of 6
seconds. Comparatively, the timing of these reactions are very similar to those results of people
who consume alcohol/drugs prior to getting in the car and driving. As for the consequences, a
ticket is $300 but the guilt lasts a lifetime and those who drive recklessly and take the life of
another person never get over their foolish decision to prioritize a phone over their own safety. It
s important to educate the youth and future generations of the dangers distracted driving can lead
to as well as explain the effects if they are not careful. By definition, the state of Colorado defines
distracted driving as, 1. Cognitive: mentally distracted, a driver s mind is not focused on driving 2.

The Goals of Sentencing in the Criminal Justice System
The Goals of Sentencing in the Criminal Justice System

Criminal Justice

Mr. Leonardo Cadogan
Abstract
In the United States there is no standard when it comes to punishment and sentencing. This area of
the criminal justice system is in a constant state of change. Sentencing practices and goals are
always being closely examined. From getting tough on crime to more rehabilitative approaches, the
views and goals of sentencing are always being corrected.
Since time began, there was crime and with crime came the need to punish criminals. How
criminals were punished and the methods behind the punishment changed throughout the times.

Those who give little credit to incapacitation could claim this to be mere coincidence, while those
who support it say the crime reducing effect of incapacitation takes time. Rehabilitation assumes
criminal behavior can be improved with non punitive methods. Rehabilitation, although non
punitive, usually occurs along side punishment. For instance an incarcerated person may be given
many rehabilitative options. Mental health programming, substance abuse counseling and even
education programming exist in modern day correctional facilities. A judge may sentencesomeone
to attend rehabilitative programming as a part of probation or it may be included as a stipulation in
a plea agreement. At the core of rehabilitation is the thought that a criminal is flawed, often through
no fault of their own. Poverty, mental health issues, or childhood trauma may all contribute to a
criminal life and rehabilitation attempts to aid in a sort of recovery. If a person is cured of their
issues, perhaps they will not fall back into their previous pattern. (Siegel Senna, 2005). Similar to
rehabilitation is the idea of restoration. While rehabilitation is through non punitive means,
restoration is the idea that punishment helps to promote a moral sense. This theory believes the
shame associated with punishment may cause a criminal to see the error of their ways. A very

Count Lev Tolstoy wrote abundantly on the philosophical issues that he felt were universally
important. One of the most prolific examples of this is his view of history. This is set out most
clearly and most famously in his largest work, War and Peace. As Tolstoy claimed himself in a
public statement on the work, War and Peace is what the author wanted and was able to express in
that form in which it was expressed. Not only do the themes and incidents in the novel reflect his
theory of history, Tolstoy iterates this in less narrative terms in the twelve chapters of the Second
Epilogue, described as, A general discussion on the historians study of human life, and on the ...

As Tolstoy said, What I have expressed in the epilogue of the novel, without quotations and
references, is not the momentary fancy of my mind but the inevitable conclusions of seven years of
work, which I had to do.
The Second Epilogue can be split up into three sections1, in section one, comprising chapters 1 to
3, Tolstoy reviews various schools of historiography, in section two, comprising chapters 4 to 7, he
deals with the question of nature and power and what determines the movements of peoples, in
section three, comprising chapters 8 to 12, he discusses the problem of free will.
The first section has been widely disregarded as a limited and anachronistic description of modern
historiography and the logocentric reliance on the presumption that what he feels is important, is
important for self evident reasons. It is often argued that Tolstoy gives an artificial impression of
historians, criticising them for things he is wrong in thinking they have claimed. But what is
important is that through doing this, Tolstoy establishes what is important for him, for his view of
history. He states that in order to explain the movements of people, there

The promising future of newspaper
In the wave of information explosion appeared in 90 last century, the channels to obtain information
among people have apparently been diversified due to the rise of new media outlets through the
medium of the Internet. Although some advantage of newspaper has been overshadowed by the
excellent performance of new media, newspaper is actively adapting to social and economic
transformation based on maintaining its existing advantages. For this reason, the essay will
describe newspapers prospects and explore whether newspaper have been outdated in the globalised
era.
The fact that people tend to choose new media to acquire useful and valuable information rather
than mere newspaper is largely due to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of mere boring character and simple page outline, modern newspaper pays more attention
on colorful pictures and illustrative graphics, based on modern typesetting techniques. (Bob
Franklin, 2008, p.637) In addition, the appearance of tabloid formats and compact editions are
increasingly popular among young readers, women and commuters, because the most striking
feature of these types of newspaper is the increased use of telegraphy or a colorful graphic in
order to attract their readers. Therefore, for modern people, reading these types of newspaper is an
effective and well understood way to obtain information and may be popular among them for a
relatively long time.
In order to gain predominance in the fury market competition and win readers, traditional
newspapers have made great efforts to design its contents published and meet the demand of their
target audiences. For example, newspapers tend to focus on a specific theme, called personalized
news such as finance, entertainment, education as well as all fields readers are interested in.(

Compare Beccaria and Lombroso Essay
Compare 2 Key Thinkers and Their Competing Ideologies.
Criminology is a study of crime, criminals and criminal justice. Ideas about criminal justice and
crime arose in the 18th century during the enlightenment, but criminology as we know it today
developed in the late 19th century. Criminology has been shaped by many different academic
disciplines and has many different approaches. It explores the implications of criminal laws; how
they emerge and work, then how they are violated and what happens to those violators. Laws are
relative and historically shaped; they vary from time to time and from place to place (Carrabine et
al, 2009).
This essay will be comparing the competing ideologies of two key thinkers in criminology; Cesare

It is better to try and prevent crimes than it is to punish them, this is achieved by good legislation
which guides men to their greatest, or least unhappiness possible (Beccaria, 1767). As mentioned
previously, Beccaria s utilitarian ideology has shaped the justice system in western societies for
many decades. Therefore, Beccaria can be described as a very influential thinker. Without his
contribution we could still have a system of capital punishment, and that is a worrying thought.
However, we now seem fixed with utilitarian justice. It may be argued that it is now time to move
towards restorative justice. There are also those such as Tullock (1974), who argue for a return to
harsher sentencing. Some states in the US still consider the death penalty to be a legitimate
punishment. So it can be said that Beccaria is undoubtedly a key thinker in criminology, but as with
all key thinkers he is not without his critics.
Cesare Lombroso was also Italian but came from a Jewish family and is very different to
Beccaria. He trained as a medical doctor and graduated in 1858. He was a leading contributor in the
development of a positivist criminology which collected and looked into scientific measurements
for the explanation of criminal behaviour and crime (Hayward et al, 2010). Nearly all biological
theories stem from Lombroso and his book The Criminal man published in 1876, although
Lombroso enlarged upon and updated this original publication through five editions

Unicellular Organelles
Now, what does it do you may be asking? These tiny things provide a lot for many unicellular
eukaryotes. The main function of both of these organelles is movement which is powered by
ATP. Cilia beat in unison on the outside of the cell in a whip like motion. Flagella have a
rotational movement which makes them also act as whips to allow cells to swim through fluids.
Cilia allows the cells to move through water, being locomotor appendages. Also, when the cilia is
a part of a cellthat is bound to one place, they will aid in the movement of water over itself. Other
than movement, cilia and flagella act as sensory organelles, receiving information from outside the,
like different chemicals and temperature, and informing the cell about what

Enso Cycle
It is important to understand the various cycles our atmosphere goes through due to how they
affect our daily lives. The ENSO Cycle has a large impact globally and locally in California as
we have seen with the long term drought Southern California is currently in. The ENSO cycle
can be defined by sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly in the Pacific Equatorial Area known as
Nino 3.4 region (5oN 5oS, 120o 170oW). Unusually cooler waters ( .5 degrees centigrade)
occurring for three consecutive months outlines a La NiГ±a. La NiГ±a s bring wetter weather to
Australia and Indonesia but often leaves the Eastern Pacific dry. Unlike La NiГ±a s, unusually
warm water (+.5 degrees centigrade above average) occurring for 3 consecutive month s outlines an

A simple intranet consists of an internal email system and perhaps a message board service. More
sophisticated intranets include Web sites and databases containing company news, forms, and
personnel information. Besides email and groupware applications, an intranet generally
incorporates internal Web sites, documents, and or databases. The business value of intranet
solutions is generally accepted in larger corporations, but their worth has proven very difficult to
quantify in terms of time saved or return on investment.
An extranet is a computer network that allows controlled access from the outside for specific
business or educational purposes. Typically a company extranet is used for people to connect to
the company to conduct any number of tasks behind a password protected area. A common
application of an extranet is a partner area where partners and resellers can download sales
resources such as graphics and content to aid in the sales process. Sometimes referred to as a portal,
an extranet can also be used to service clients who need support for products and services purchased
from the organization. An enterprise level extranet application can be built upon most technology
available today, including dot net, asp, php, html, and other systems. Extranets are extensions to, or
segments of, private intranet networks that have been built in many corporations for information
sharing and ecommerce. Most extranets use the Internet as the entry point for

The Pros And Cons Of Customs Union
The reason I chose Customs Union as my topic is to learn more about how members or potential
members of a union establish an agreement that benefit all parties. I find it interesting that
members of a union are able to influence one another s economic growth, competition and how
they can complement one another as well. Having a common trade policy among a group of
members and removing all barriers of trade can play a significant role in the success of a
business. It saves a lot money, and could be a competitive advantage over competitors. Countries
of a union joining can also impact its position in a global market, as well as help the country
economically. The ability for a group of countries to come together and help each other is
fascinating, and is why I chose to explore this topic more.
EXPLANATION OF KEY TERM
The third stage of Economic Integration is Customs Union. According to the Encyclopaedia of
Britannica, Customs Union is a trade agreement by which a group of countries charges a common
set of tariffs to the rest of the world while granting free trade among themselves (Encyclopedia
Britannica, 2010). Customs Union is free trade zone with common external tariffs; which helps
increase economic efficiency and allows for signatories to establish political and cultural ties.
Tariff barriers make it difficult for some countries to sell products in a foreign country because of
the additional taxes on imported goods, which is a price advantage to members of a

Conflicting Depictions of Female Characters in Mahfouz’s...
Conflicting Depictions of Female Characters in Mahfouz s 1966 Novel Adrift on the Nile and
Hussein Kamal s 1971 Film
Adaptation
Upon reading Naguib Mahfouz s Adrift on the Nile, and viewing the film of the same title released
in 1972, one will undoubtedly notice the stark contrast between the portrayals of women in each of
these works. Critics like Ibrahim El Sheikh and Pamela Allegretto Diiulio have argued that by
realistically depicting the social condition of Egyptian women, Mahfouz s literature is protesting
the country s patriarchal society and challenging the notion that women are not equal to men. The
novel is clearly in line with these criticisms. The women in the novel are depicted as strong,
independent, intellectual and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Allegretto Diiulio writes:
He positions women into generally minor roles, but has affixed a long lasting significance to their
continually despondent and hopeless circumstances. Thus, their entrapment is a product of the
society, the culture and the Islamic religion all of which conflated to produce a patriarchal
construct that has restricted the ideals of hope and has discouraged female quest for liberation.
(Allegretto Diiulio 216)
Allegretto Diiulio s description of Mahfouz s female characters does not in any way resemble the
women we see in Adrift on the Nile, and interestingly, in her book, she leaves out any discussion
of the novel. This is likely because of the fact that, even though Mahfouz was writing in the women
are portrayed as strong and independent. The book is in no way a representation of women in
despondent and hopeless circumstances. The question remains, while the book offers a progressive
representation of female characters, why does the film, made in 1971, portray women in such a
regressive manner? Looking at the history of Egyptian film, answering this question becomes even
more complicated. Egyptian cinema was nationalized in the 1960s, and according to Walter
Armbrust in his book, Mass Mediations: New

  • 6. Characteristics Of Visual Soccer Analytics 2Visual Soccer Analytics: Understanding the Characteristics of Collective Team Movement Based on Feature Driven Analysis and Abstraction This paper[3] proposes a novel visual analysis system for interactive identification of soccer patterns and game situations that are of interest to a sports analyst. It does this by building on a pre existing data driven system and improving it by adding semantic features defined along with a soccer domain expert. The new application provides visualizations to show the features and their ranking over time, and plots this change of game play situations which are useful for interpreting complex game situations. A considerable improvement of the new system is that it involves a learning stage where user and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using this system, analysts can interactively re rank derived features or select combinations of features, based on which the computation of interesting situations is reorganized and the visualization refreshed. More importantly, visual analytics allows to better include the domain knowledge in the analysis compared to the basic automated approaches. The usefulness of this approach is then evaluated in a two stage qualitative user study by using two professional video analysts as users. The authors relate their work directly to the recent work of Janetzko[4] who uses a similar visual analytics approach to distinguish between potentially interesting and non interesting events. Unfortunately, Janetzko s visual system did not include game context or interaction information regarding the classified interesting game situations. The authors also relate their system with the work of other sports visualizations approaches. One such approach that is worth mentioning is the work of Perin[5] who presents a hybrid version of rank chart and slope graph visualizations positions the teams with respect to their performance and time during a season this system is able to show the magnitude of gaps between teams and minimize the overlap. The paper first discusses previous related work involving automating approaches. Then the authors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Research Paper On Israel Culture Israel SSG Dustin L. Ingram SLC 13P Class 001 16 The Army s field manual on Counterinsurgency defines Culture as a system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another ( Counterinsurgency , 2006, para. 3 37). The culture of any particular group is evolving all the time due to it being a product of fluid characteristics that form and shape that culture. Some cultures evolve quickly while others take much longer to evolve due to some inherent rigidity. Israel fits on both sides of this scale and is very interesting to examine for one particular reason, Israel is a country formed relatively recently by a culture group that has been around for centuries. ... With a total population of 8,049,314 people, they are a relatively small country but due to the size of Israel, about 92% of these people live in urban areas (The World Factbook, n.d.). This fact plays a large role in the Israeli economy. With so much of the country being urban only about 2.5% of their GDP comes from agriculture while the remaining 97.5% is from the Service and Industry sectors that are more common in urban areas (The World Factbook, n.d.). Religion also plays a huge part in shaping the culture of the Israelis with about 75% of the population being Jewish. This not only shapes the more apparent aspects of the Israeli culture like their values, beliefs, and traditions but also effects things like their diet and language which both have their roots in the Jewish religion. In fact, Israel is the only country that Hebrew is the official language. Not everything within the Israeli culture however, centers on the Jewish religion. The people of Israel also value fairness and freedom from religious persecution so much that their court systems are set up in three different branches to cover Christian, Muslim, and Jewish cases to ensure that there is no religious bias in their legal system. This idea is both a product of the fact that Israel is home to about 25% non Jewish residents and the fact that the Israeli people know firsthand the effects of religious ... THE LINK BETWEEN STOCK PRICES AND THE ECONOMY Economic theory proposes that there should be a strong link between economic activity and stock prices, given that its price is the discounted present value of the firm s payout. If this payout is finally a function of real activity, such a link should exist. There are several theoretical propositions suggesting how stock prices can have a direct impact on economic output, which further strengthens the link amongst these two variables. 1.The first link was proposed by Tobin in 1969. The focus is on the impact that share prices have on the cost of capital. The coefficient that captures this is called Tobin s Q, which is given by the ratio of market value of current capital to the cost of replacement capital. When the prices of shares are high, the value of the firm to the replacement cost of its capital is also high i.e., the Tobin s Q is also high. Furthermore, this leads to rise in investment expenditure and thus causes a rise in the aggregate economic output as for firms it is easier to finance their investment expenditures. For example, if a company is upgrading from one operating system to another, the IT department would need to deploy an image to all of the new computers to install the new operating system in a timely fashion. Just like the first scenario, a reference computer would need to be created that is completely configured according to the companies needs and an image would then need to be created from that computer. • 16. Why Do Finches Survive In the Galapagos Islands there is an island named, Daphne Major, this island plays as the host of the Galapagos finches. In 1976 1977 there was an absolute near extinction of these finches. This is because of the drought of 1976 and 1977 (see figure 1). While the drought made the Finch population dwindle there was a hidden trait that was helping some survive, and that is beak size. Why did the larger beaks help those fortunate Finches survive? Because the only plants that survived where plants like the Tribulus, which produces hard shelled seeds. While there was an abundance of hard shelled seeds there was a shortage of soft shelled seeds. The finches that had the larger beaks weighed more, for example, survivors weighed approx. 12.5g to 17.5g with beak sizes going from 10.5 to 13.6(for evidence see figure 2. In contrast we see that Electra is devastated (Ibid., line 789) at the news. The idea of justice and revenge is brought to a climax here as Clytaemnestra feels that, Justice is done to him . Would this be justice to Orestes for not doing his duty or to Agamemnon for sacrificing his child? This compares well with the previous passage where Clytaemnestra accuses Electra of not doing her duty (Ibid., pg 84, line 526). Electra cries out to Likh, Goddess of Vengeance, hear and speak for the dead . It is clear from the many interpretations of dikh and its use in Sophocles Electra that other, broader issues can be raised. The very concepts of justice, revenge, honour and custom are exposed in detail. Understanding these issues and the language used requires further study of the period, language, laws, customs and traditions. The most important issue raised by this play is that of how do we (or more specifically the Greeks watching the play) feel about matricide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. A Report On Financial Institutions Overview: Financial institutions continues to be challenged by the inherent risks that are associated to the loss of customer data through the compromise of security controls. As Information Security continues to grow, the lack of effective security controls such as authentication continues to one of the key components leading to data breaches across all industries. For this purpose, SecureKey contracted with a leading independent security governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) firm Coalfire Systems, Inc., to provide a security review of their SecureKey briidge.net Connect solution. Given that, in the age of Internet banking, recent data breaches continue to raise security awareness. Consequently, many financial institutions are relying on guidance provided by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council ( FFIEC ), in effort to prevent the risk of identity theft and fraudulent transactions. Our assessment of the SecureKey briidge.net Connect solution considered FFIEC requirements for authentication in an Internet Banking Environment. The objectives of our security review included: 1.An assessment of the overall design and architecture of the SecureKey briidge.net Connect solution; 2.Technical evaluations of SecureKey s mobile and web applications authentication capabilities; and 3.Monitoring network traffic to confirm that fields which are configured for encryption do not appear to be transmitting clear text data. • 20. Religion In The Decameron Religion Boccaccio also infused The Decameron with his opinions on the Catholic church, which even at that time was Italy s primary religious institution. Catholicism may have been popular, but Boccaccio was very blatant in showing that he did not approve of the Church s conduct. In The Decameron, religion was practiced by fools, the church was a breeding ground for mischief, and marriage was a transaction devoid of meaning. Perhaps the most foolish characters readers could come across in The Decameron were Friar Alberto and Monna Lisetta. Boccaccio masterfully parodied the Church by introducing Friar Alberto as a former con man who moved to Venice and became a priest: already, Boccaccio has criticized the vetting process for potential religious officials. Monna Lisetta, the next character introduced, is a vain, airheaded devotee of the angel Gabriel. By having these silly characters meet in a religious setting, Boccaccio mocked the Catholics of his day, especially once Friar Alberto used his credibility as a man of God to trick the gullible Monna Lisetta into having sex with Gabriel, who would be possessing the friar s own body. Boccaccio could hardly be more derisive toward the Church than with this tragic story. But Friar Alberto and Monna Lisetta were not Boccaccio s only example of mischief that had its roots in a church: the wife of Pietro di Vinciolo essentially asked a friend to arrange extramarital liaisons for her in exchange for a piece of jerky. Essay On Gap Wedge Goal: Review post Total word count in this document: 1011 Title: Best gap wedge With the short game accounting for more than 50% of shots you play in a round, improving your wedge play is the first step to shooting a lower score. The wedge is the most important aspect when playing golf. Acting as the goalkeepers of our game by saving us shots from both turf and sand, golf wedges come in various lofts, finishes, bounce and grinds to help us get closer to the pin from anywhere inside of 125 yards. Gap wedges range in loft from 50 to 55 degrees and are a compromise between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. A gap wedge is particularly critical to use today because the 5 degree difference in degrees between the SW and PW in the 1960s has now grown to exactly 10 degrees. • 26. What Every American Should Know By Eric Liu Interpretative essay What every American should know by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy and its place in modern America. It takes on a convincing argument against E.D. Hirsch s book on the same which included some 5000 things that he thought define cultural literacy and every American should know. Liu argues that America has changed over time, becoming more multicultural, and to capture the cultural literacy of the country, no one person should sit down and come up with what they think everyone else should know. Instead he suggests that in order to capture the view of the nation, every American should be involved in the making of the list. The most engaging part of this article is Liu s idea that this new list that is crowd sourced should always change according to the times. It should not be cast in stone because things in this day and age change really fast; what is a hit this month will be old news in the next one. This is what cultural literacy really is; keeping up with what is going on around you and being open to learn new things as they emerge. This can also be said of education; in order to stay educated in any field, you have to be in the know of in terms of new developments. The conversation and debates on cultural literacy should continue in every place in America since it helps us to understand and be tolerant of other cultures around us (Gay 2010). In fact most forest fires are started by humans, when they don t know it. However, forest fires are necessary for plants health, by offering many ecological benefits. There are also actual forests fires that are permitted to burn that are not fought for that purpose. Then again, if forest fires occur and are not permitted, firefighters need to take action in their many ways. Therefore, forests fires often start by humans, has many ecological benefits, and are fought in many ways. Ecological Benefits Many people think of forest fires as bad and disastrous as figure 1 shows, but what they don t know is that forest fires have great benefits to the environment. Some say that large forest fires are like shots of adrenaline that stimulate biodiversity (Robbins). Without these fires many plants would not be able to grow in their natural way. Those fires recycle nutrients, and create substances that plants need for growth. Fires also clear trees and some vegetation that can prevent new tree growth. In fact, some species of Pine and Oak trees grow best when forest fires occur (Parker). Also, some tree species need very high temperatures for their seeds to sprout (Cooper). Foresters can actually permit certain forest fires to occur due to all the ecological benefits. Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King, Jr. s Justification of Defying Unjust Laws In his famous essay, Letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr. cites conscience as a guide to obeying just laws and defying unjust laws. In the same way, Henry David Thoreau wrote in his famous essay, Civil Disobedience, that people should do what their conscience tells them and not obey unjust laws. The positions of the two writers are very close; they use a common theme of conscience, and they use a similar rhetorical appeal of ethos. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He disagreed with other American people who believed the majority should change the law first because it is a worse thing to disobey the law than to do what an unjust law says to do. Thoreau wrote that breaking the unjust laws is better: Break the law. Let your life be a counter friction to stop the machine (Thoreau, P. 18). However, Thoreau did not think people should be criminals. He thinks a criminal is a person who disobeys the law but will not be responsible for that. If a person disobeys an unjust law, Thoreau thinks that the person must do that, so all people can see he is disobeying the law because it is unjust. Then the person must accept what happens to him for disobeying the law. Thoreau wrote that people must be willing to go to jail if they want to change a law by disobeying the law. Thoreau went to jail instead of paying for his taxes because he believed the government used the money for unjust things. This is how Henry Thoreau thinks people can change unjust laws. He thought that if people willingly would to go to jail and quit their jobs, then the revolution will take a place and reform will come. Thoreau was willing to go to jail to change unjust laws because of his conscience. King s position on unjust laws was very close to Thoreau s position on unjust laws. Firstly, a brief explanation of some of the terms I will be using. Capitalism is an economic system where businesses and the means of production are owned by private individuals for profit. In a socialist economy, the means of productionare owned by the community as a whole and individuals get rewarded for their work based on the following principle: from each according to his ability, to each according to his contribution. In communism, items are divided up based on, from each according to his ability, to each according to his need. Finally, I will use the terms proletariat and bourgeoisie.... Fourthly, suppressing an idea from America is the least American action you could do. Freedom of speech is an essential liberty. Fifthly, all perceived danger from the USSR is nowhere near the amount of actual danger they are in because of us. • 31. Essay on Logic and Moral Dilemmas Logic and Moral Dilemmas ABSTRACT: Logic is of great importance for the philosophy of education. In particular, logic provides a rational and critical approach in ethics, helping us understand the nature of moral dilemmas. Some suggest that all moral dilemmas result from some kind of inconsistency in the moral rules. Unsolvable moral situations simply reflect implicit inconsistencies in our existing moral code. If we are to remain moral as well as logical, then we must restore consistency to our code. This is accomplished by adding exception clauses to current principles, and giving priorities to some principles over others, or by some other device. I argue that we must accept moral dilemmas as an essential part of real life reality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From this point of view dilemmas are so to say merely apparent rather than real. However it seems that a complete and consistent system of moral rules is impossible not as a matter of fact but also as a matter of principle. Indeed, at least some moral statements are the statements concerning values. Further, according to the Moore s axiological thesis , whether these statements are true depends on two factors: the set of alternatives which we are evaluating, and the scale of values which we rate them. And from the theory of social choice we know that it is possible that each of some compared alternatives (in our case, ways of action) be no better than others in some respect, and also that there be no respect in which they are equally good or equally bad, and so on, and so forth ( the Condorcet s effect ). Thus we ought to accept moral dilemmas as an essential part of real life reality. In order to philosophize, the philosopher of education can seldom turn to just one branch of philosophy. Poverty, mental health issues, or childhood trauma may all contribute to a criminal life and rehabilitation attempts to aid in a sort of recovery. If a person is cured of their issues, perhaps they will not fall back into their previous pattern. (Siegel Senna, 2005). Similar to rehabilitation is the idea of restoration. While rehabilitation is through non punitive means, restoration is the idea that punishment helps to promote a moral sense. This theory believes the shame associated with punishment may cause a criminal to see the error of their ways. A very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Psychosocial Analysis I have been extremely lucky to have been introduced to new and exciting experiences throughout many of my stages of development. My experiences in blended families, travel and the friendships I have made throughout the years have created a culturally diverse backdrop for my developmental journey so far. These life experiences include a number of diverse cultures in which I am not always a part of, but have learned so much about up to this point, and will continue learning about throughout my life. During middle childhood, ages 6 12, my life changed dramatically. Up until this point I had lived a rather sheltered life from what I can gather. As he grows up, he becomes a Hindu, Muslim, and a Christian. Many people tell him that he can t be all three, but he has to choose one. He claims, I just want to love god (CITATION HERE). Towards the end of the first part, Pi learns that his family is moving to Canada and they are closing the zoo. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pi dispels the belief that animals in the wild are more free . He refutes that statement by explaining animals in the wild do not have glamorous lives, but instead they feel starvation and have to forage for food every night. Also, he mentions that most animals are habitual creatures. For example, many things that are out of the ordinary will upset an animal, such as a hose in an unusual place or a puddle. Finally, he states that, above all else, animals are territorial. An animal in a zoo is no worse off than an animal in the wild because an animal in a zoo has a routine and unchallenged territory. He then explains zoomorphism, which is the phenomenon of an animal accepting a different type of animal or a human as one of their own kind. There are many examples of this, such as dogs accepting humans as one of their kind. Pi also mentions some occurrences of zoomorphism from his father s zoo. The rhinoceros in the zoo gets along with the goats in his cage, a single mouse was kept alive by a snake until a new viper bit it, causing the adults to devour ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Essay on War and Peace and Tolstoy s View of History War and Peace and Tolstoy s View of History Count Lev Tolstoy wrote abundantly on the philosophical issues that he felt were universally important. One of the most prolific examples of this is his view of history. This is set out most clearly and most famously in his largest work, War and Peace. As Tolstoy claimed himself in a public statement on the work, War and Peace is what the author wanted and was able to express in that form in which it was expressed. Not only do the themes and incidents in the novel reflect his theory of history, Tolstoy iterates this in less narrative terms in the twelve chapters of the Second Epilogue, described as, A general discussion on the historians study of human life, and on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Tolstoy said, What I have expressed in the epilogue of the novel, without quotations and references, is not the momentary fancy of my mind but the inevitable conclusions of seven years of work, which I had to do. The Second Epilogue can be split up into three sections1, in section one, comprising chapters 1 to 3, Tolstoy reviews various schools of historiography, in section two, comprising chapters 4 to 7, he deals with the question of nature and power and what determines the movements of peoples, in section three, comprising chapters 8 to 12, he discusses the problem of free will. The first section has been widely disregarded as a limited and anachronistic description of modern historiography and the logocentric reliance on the presumption that what he feels is important, is important for self evident reasons. It is often argued that Tolstoy gives an artificial impression of historians, criticising them for things he is wrong in thinking they have claimed. But what is important is that through doing this, Tolstoy establishes what is important for him, for his view of history. He states that in order to explain the movements of people, there ... • 43. Compare Beccaria and Lombroso Essay Compare 2 Key Thinkers and Their Competing Ideologies. Criminology is a study of crime, criminals and criminal justice. Ideas about criminal justice and crime arose in the 18th century during the enlightenment, but criminology as we know it today developed in the late 19th century. Criminology has been shaped by many different academic disciplines and has many different approaches. It explores the implications of criminal laws; how they emerge and work, then how they are violated and what happens to those violators. Laws are relative and historically shaped; they vary from time to time and from place to place (Carrabine et al, 2009). This essay will be comparing the competing ideologies of two key thinkers in criminology; Cesare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is better to try and prevent crimes than it is to punish them, this is achieved by good legislation which guides men to their greatest, or least unhappiness possible (Beccaria, 1767). As mentioned previously, Beccaria s utilitarian ideology has shaped the justice system in western societies for many decades. Therefore, Beccaria can be described as a very influential thinker. Without his contribution we could still have a system of capital punishment, and that is a worrying thought. However, we now seem fixed with utilitarian justice. It may be argued that it is now time to move towards restorative justice. There are also those such as Tullock (1974), who argue for a return to harsher sentencing. Some states in the US still consider the death penalty to be a legitimate punishment. So it can be said that Beccaria is undoubtedly a key thinker in criminology, but as with all key thinkers he is not without his critics. Cesare Lombroso was also Italian but came from a Jewish family and is very different to Beccaria. He trained as a medical doctor and graduated in 1858. He was a leading contributor in the development of a positivist criminology which collected and looked into scientific measurements for the explanation of criminal behaviour and crime (Hayward et al, 2010). Nearly all biological theories stem from Lombroso and his book The Criminal man published in 1876, although Lombroso enlarged upon and updated this original publication through five editions ... The main function of both of these organelles is movement which is powered by ATP. Cilia beat in unison on the outside of the cell in a whip like motion. Flagella have a rotational movement which makes them also act as whips to allow cells to swim through fluids. Cilia allows the cells to move through water, being locomotor appendages. Also, when the cilia is a part of a cellthat is bound to one place, they will aid in the movement of water over itself. Other than movement, cilia and flagella act as sensory organelles, receiving information from outside the, like different chemicals and temperature, and informing the cell about what ... • 49. The Pros And Cons Of Customs Union The reason I chose Customs Union as my topic is to learn more about how members or potential members of a union establish an agreement that benefit all parties. I find it interesting that members of a union are able to influence one another s economic growth, competition and how they can complement one another as well. Having a common trade policy among a group of members and removing all barriers of trade can play a significant role in the success of a business. It saves a lot money, and could be a competitive advantage over competitors. Countries of a union joining can also impact its position in a global market, as well as help the country economically. The ability for a group of countries to come together and help each other is fascinating, and is why I chose to explore this topic more. EXPLANATION OF KEY TERM The third stage of Economic Integration is Customs Union. According to the Encyclopaedia of Britannica, Customs Union is a trade agreement by which a group of countries charges a common set of tariffs to the rest of the world while granting free trade among themselves (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2010). Customs Union is free trade zone with common external tariffs; which helps increase economic efficiency and allows for signatories to establish political and cultural ties. Tariff barriers make it difficult for some countries to sell products in a foreign country because of the additional taxes on imported goods, which is a price advantage to members of a ... Conflicting Depictions of Female Characters in Mahfouz s 1966 Novel Adrift on the Nile and Hussein Kamal s 1971 Film Adaptation Upon reading Naguib Mahfouz s Adrift on the Nile, and viewing the film of the same title released in 1972, one will undoubtedly notice the stark contrast between the portrayals of women in each of these works. Critics like Ibrahim El Sheikh and Pamela Allegretto Diiulio have argued that by realistically depicting the social condition of Egyptian women, Mahfouz s literature is protesting the country s patriarchal society and challenging the notion that women are not equal to men. The novel is clearly in line with these criticisms. The women in the novel are depicted as strong, independent, intellectual and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Allegretto Diiulio writes: He positions women into generally minor roles, but has affixed a long lasting significance to their continually despondent and hopeless circumstances. Thus, their entrapment is a product of the society, the culture and the Islamic religion all of which conflated to produce a patriarchal construct that has restricted the ideals of hope and has discouraged female quest for liberation. (Allegretto Diiulio 216) Allegretto Diiulio s description of Mahfouz s female characters does not in any way resemble the women we see in Adrift on the Nile, and interestingly, in her book, she leaves out any discussion of the novel. This is likely because of the fact that, even though Mahfouz was writing in the women are portrayed as strong and independent. The book is in no way a representation of women in despondent and hopeless circumstances. The question remains, while the book offers a progressive representation of female characters, why does the film, made in 1971, portray women in such a regressive manner? Looking at the history of Egyptian film, answering this question becomes even more complicated. Egyptian cinema was nationalized in the 1960s, and according to Walter Armbrust in his book, Mass Mediations: New ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
