Introducing SlideShare: Power Point + YouTube
Michael Arrington@arrington?lang=en / 4:30 PM GMT+5:30•October 4, 2006
“SlideShare is a new service launching this morning that lets users upload
PowerPoint or Open Office presentation files and share them online through a You
Tube-like interface. Power Point documents (or any office documents) stored on the
web with a permanent URL are a valuable resource. No need to email the file to
recipients, or carry a copy around on a USB drive. The presentation can easily be
shared (and with permission controls, kept relatively secure).”
4. JULY 24,2007
• SLIDESHARE INTRODUCED SLIDECAST ON JULY 24, 2007
• SLIDECAST WAS A PODCAST LIKE FORMAT WITH WHICH USERS COULD UPLOAD
POWERPOINT, KEYNOTE AND PDF PRESENTATIONS AND SYNCHRONISE THEM
WITH MP3 AUDIO
• ACCORDING TO JONATHAN BOUTELLE “I can say without exaggeration that this
was the hardest technical and design task we’ve taken on so far with SlideShare.””
5. JULY 24TH, 2007, SLIDESHARE BLOG
“ For the last several months, we’ve been toiling away on a really ambitious project.
Our goal : the integration of web audio with slideshows.
Today we’re psyched to introduce a new multimedia format that we hope will
revolutionize the way knowledge is shared on the web.
We call it “SlideCasting” (SlideShows + podcasting). Slidecasting makes previously
static web slideshows true, compelling multimedia experiences.”
6. THE BLOG FURTHER STATES..
“Here’s what Slide Casting means. You can connect any mp3 on the web to your slideshow.
Once you do that, you can synchronize *each* slide to a particular section of the audio track.
This means that you can now use SlideShare to truly share a talk, instead of just the slides
from a talk.
And instead of having to listen to the entire mp3, listeners can use SlideShare to quickly
navigate to the section of the talk that they are interested in listening to.
We think this might make podcasting a lot more mainstream, by providing an easy way to
visually navigate them.”
8. FEBRUARY 2011
• ON FEBRUARY 2011, SLIDESHARE ADDED A WEB CONFERENCING SYSTEM FEATURE
CALLED ZIPCAST
ZIPCAST = SLIDES+CHAT+VIDEO
It was a one click start web conferencing system that worked on any browser.
9. MAY 3,2012
• SLIDESHARE WAS ACQUIRED BY LINKEDIN FOR A REPORTED AMOUNT OF
$118.75 MILLION
• THE TRANSACTION CONSTITUTED OF APPROXIMATELY 45% CASH AND 55%
STOCK

NEWS, MAY 4, 2012
Leena Rao@LeenaRao / 1:44 AM GMT+5:30•May 4, 2012
“LinkedIn has just acquired professional content sharing platform SlideShare for $119 million in cash and
stock. We’ve pasted the release below.
SlideShare is a sharing platform for business documents, videos and presentations.
SlideShare lets anyone share presentations and video and also serves as a social discovery platform for
users to find relevant content and connect with other members who share similar interests.
The company also has a huge enterprise following, and companies like IBM and others use the platform to
curate content from all of their employees and partners on a branded page.”
11. ACCORDING TO THE NEWS…..
“SlideShare users have uploaded more than nine million presentations, and according to comScore, in
March SlideShare had nearly 29 million unique visitors.
SlideShare has raised $3 million in funding from Jonathan Abrams, Mark Cuban, Dave McClure, and
Venrock.
The acquisition makes a lot of sense from a product point of view. SlideShare recently deepened
its integration with LinkedIn, and the two companies have compared their relationship to Chocolate and
peanut butter for professionals. “
12. ACCORDING TO THE THEN LINKEDIN CEO,JEFF
WEINER
“It's a great outcome for the founders of SlideShare, Rashmi Sinha, Jonathan Boutelle,
and Amit Ranjan. It's also a nice exit for Venrock, which was the institutional investor
in the company and had a 15X return.”
