When examining a family s history it is obvious that the many children have ended up with the
same level of education as their parents and ancestors. Children whose parents received tertiary
level education normally obtain a qualification from tertiary level education as well. This idea was
first questioned by Pierre Bourdieuwho introduced the concept of cultural capital. Cultural capital is
the skills that a person can use to their advantage in a social situation, especially in education. While
observing a classroom children were being dismissed because they did not speak the language, their
low cultural capital impacted their learning immensely; however, in another classroom I observed
the teacher being an agent of change. Striving to include every child in the lesson depict the diverse
range of cultural capital present. These two different situations impacted when the child was
present, how the children participated in class and their overall achievement.
Cultural capital is the ideas and knowledge that people draw upon and use as an asset in social
situations. As Lamont Lareau state the idea of cultural capital was introduced in the 1960s by

1. Bismarck s foreign policy was entirely based on preserving his power and Germany s throughout
Europe. After 1870 he was against the idea of expanding Germany and believed that the country
was satiated. Instead, Bismarck wanted to keep the peace among European countries rather than
engaging in war, therefore keeping Germany safe from attack. He planned to do this through the
use of gaining european alliances which included Austria Hungary, Italy, and Russia. Believing that

In contrast to Bismarck, Kaiser believed that in order to keep Germany in power and prevent them
from defeat he had to build and strengthen a navy as strong as, if not stronger than England s. In all,

It is perhaps safe to say that the most prominent political philosophy in contemporary era is
liberalism. Liberalism is based on the ideas of liberal political theorists of the last three hundred
years. Among these ideas, the first and most important deals with the question of liberty. Political
theorists such as John Locke and John Stuart Mill argued that liberty of individual citizens must
be upheld by the state. Mill particularly stated that the state should be liberal by default. The
burden of proving that liberty should be restricted or prohibited should lie on the states. Unless
they can provide such proof, all citizens should by presumption be at liberty. Locke, Rousseau,
and Hobbes stated that liberty could be restricted under certain circumstances. For instance, when
the state is threatened by a revolt, and since the state is the guarantor of liberty of all its subjects,
the state is justified in curtailing some liberal policies but temporarily. The government under
liberal political theory is viewed as a necessary evil. The theory suggests that the power and the
role of the state should be minimized. There should also be a balance of power in the state.
Democracy is essential for liberal political theory. Citizens should enjoy both liberty and the
freedom to elect or, in the absence of liberal political order, overthrow the government. But the
liberties of citizens cannot be guaranteed in a state of anarchy.
