Karl Marx, Adam Smith, and Andrew Carnegie The writings of Karl Marx, Adam Smith, and
Andrew Carnegie all made significant impacts in society not only in their time, but continuing to
this day. Marx shared is opinions on capitalism and his views of the progression of human society
in his writing, The Communist Manifesto which he wrote with Friedrich Engles and published
in 1848. Marx believed in the idea of a society with no capitalism and the abolition of the
bourgeoisie. Adam Smith wrote a book called The Wealth of Nations which was published in
1776. In his book he tells the reader what helps to build the economy of a nation and essentially
advocates for capitalism. Andrew Carnegie was a self made multimillionaire who gained his
wealth by investing in the railroads. In 1889 he wrote an article titled The Gospel of Wealth in
which he discusses the duty of the upper class to distribute their surplus wealth to those in need.
All three of these men were influential in their works and ways of life, but all three had extremely
different opinions on capitalism. Karl Marx s viewed capitalism as something that was negative for
our society, but that would eventually become a positive. Because of capitalism, the bourgeoisie
(upper and middle class) would often oppress the proletarians (working class). In The Communist

first got to the museum, the first thing that caught my eye was the Urban Lights sculpture built in
2008 outside, by Chris Burden. The sculpture has two hundred and two restored cast iron antique
street lamps. The sculpture was painted in white and the actual size was 320 ВЅ x 686 ВЅ x 704
ВЅ inches. Also the whole building had remarkable architectural features. As you walk from room
to room, there was a guard in each room. The atmosphere of the museum was very pleasant and

Dalton Conley describes labeling theory in Chapter 6 of You May Ask Yourself as the belief that
individuals subconsciously notice how others see or label them, and their reactions to those
labels over time form the basis of their self identity (Conley, 2011:203). In other words, over time,
a person s self identity changes to fit the character other people impose upon them. An action itself
isn t necessarily deviant unless society decides it is. Labeling theory can go either way, either
positive or negative. While not necessarily deviant, an example of the self fulfilling (or Pygmalion)

reference to a study by Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson who administered IQ tests to a group

The study draws economic analogies for Heisenberg s Uncertainty principle and concentrates on the
17 largest Investment Banks and the 10 largest Mutual Funds. It tries to quantify the uncertainty
and lists the economic mass of every institution from among the two groups and the average
economic masses of each group as well. The study was restricted to publically listed Investment
Banks and Mutual Funds and the model was not applicable to privately held and boutique banks
and also wasn t applicable to hedge funds and other private funds which did not report their Net
Asset Value Returns. According to the findings, the economic mass was highest for Goldman Sachs
while Toronto Domino Bank shows the least economic mass. When it comes to Mutual Funds,
Pimco the world s largest mutual fund had the lowest economic mass; the exposure to the crisis
could be the reason behind this. The American Funds Growth Fund of America has the highest
economic mass. This study has been able to show that the Heisenberg s Uncertainty Principle has
implications for financial institutions. For future research, one could look into applying the model
for privately held Financial Institutions and those funds which do not report their returns like Hedge
Funds.

The Tragedy That is Gorillas in the Mist Entertainment media, such as television and literature, have
often used the archetypal plot tragedy. Tragedy is a plot in which greatness can be crushed and
goodness, in turn, defeated. Often, a tragedy presents the challenges of adulthood, rather than a
romanticized version of life, proclaiming beauty and youth. In a tragedy, a hero accepts a call to
action to go on a journey, and, along the way, fate thwarts their efforts, and they perish or are
defeated. Afterwards, the audience experience a feeling of catharsis, or the releasing of a strong
emotion (such as pity or fear) (Merriam Webster). Director Michael Apted s Golden Globes
winning movie, Gorillas in the Mist, closely followed the plot of a tragedy. Apted uses archetypal
characters, symbols, and pathos to portray a tragedy. Using archetypal characters, such as Dian
Fossey, Bob Campbell, and the Batwa, Apted depicts a tragic plot in Gorillas in the Mist. Dian
Fossey travels to the mountains of Central Africa in order to protect the mountain gorillas whose
population was rapidly succumbing to poaching in the area. In order to save their lives, Fossey
gives up personal relationships, and devotes all of her attention to the gorillas. In Apted s film,
Fossey represents the tragic hero; she takes a call to action to save the mountain gorillas, and is
thwarted by efforts from locals in the area, and is eventually murdered for her efforts to protect
