Essay on Labor Unions
Labor Unions
Labor Unions: Aging Dinosaur or Sleeping Giant? The Labor Movement and Unionism
Background and Brief History Higher wages! Shorter workdays! Better working conditions! These
famous words echoed throughout the United States beginning in 1790 with the skilled craftsmen
(Dessler, 1997, p. 544). For the last two hundred years, workers of all trades have been fighting for
their rights and seeking methods of improving their living standards, working conditions, and job
security (Boone, 1996,p.287). As time went by, these individuals came to the conclusion that if they
work together collectively, they would grow stronger to get responses to their demands. This
inspired into what we know today as labor unions. A labor union... Show more content on

57). In December 1886, the American Federation of Labor (AFL) was formed in Columbus, Ohio.
The AFL was originally named the Federated Organization of Trades and Labor Union back in
1881. The AFL was a national union made up of affiliated, individual craftunions (Boone, 1996, p.
288). The first president of the AFL was Samuel Gompers. On the contrary to the Knights of
Labor, Gompers focus was to raise day to day wages, and continue to improve the working
conditions (Dessler, 1997). After the formation of the AFL, the period included significant
developments. In the early 1890 s, the United Mine Workers was formed, becoming the first
major United States industrialized union (Robinson, 1985). In addition, a significant defeat
occurred in organized labor. The defeat is known as the strike at Homestead, Pennsylvania. The
Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers was eliminated from the steel
industry (Robinson, 1985, p. 58). History from 1905 to 1920. In 1905, the Industrial Workers of
the World (IWW) challenged the AFL, prior to the depression of the 1930 s. The IWW invited
the unskilled and semiskilled workers that the AFL had denied and was a success from 1910 to
1915 (Encyclopedia, 1996). The results of this had decreased the AFL membership for a short
period of time, but they fought back by bringing

Coca Cola And A Low Calorie Cola
With each day, the advertisement industry is growing, becoming one of the most undeviating parts
of our lives. According to statistics, one third of all commercials are produced right here in the
United States. Being home to major multi national companies, the United States witnesses both
excellent and atrocious ads. While many firms have failed dreadfully sometimes to promote their
products through the help of a commercial, Coca cola has always flourished in this sector. Coca
Cola managed to produce astounding ads by consistently creating an emotional connection with its
audience. With the launch of its new soda Coca Cola Life in Buenos Aires Argentina, The Coca
Cola companyhas released another scintillating and heartwarming commercial along with it. The
sixty second Coca Cola ad advocates Coca Cola Life, a low calorie cola that is naturally
sweetened with stevia leaf extract and sugar. By chronicling the joys and pains of parenting and by
portraying a family environment, Coca Cola effectively elicits from viewers that connect their
product with a sense of the warmth of a peaceful family life. Thousands of ads have tackled the
highs and lows of first time parenting but none quite as magnificently as this. At the end of the
commercial, it sends out a message, Destapa Tu Naturaleza. Substantially, the brand s campaign
invites consumers to open their good nature. Eventually, they synthesized the idea of parenting and
good nature

A Visit From The Goon Squad Analysis
Every work of literature requires a theme for it to be worth reading. Jennifer Egan s A Visit from
the Goon Squad mainly presents the theme of ruin and redemption throughout the novel. This
theme is present alongside with other minor themes like the shift of American culture, and how
the characters self centered ways are crush by time. All of the major characters will find
themselves at some sort of low point in their lives throughout the novel. Jocelyn becomes
addicted to drugs and spends a great amount of her adult life going in and out of rehab; Benny
will lose his record label contract and will be seen as a failure by most of those still in the
industry; and Sasha will show falling into ruin due to her stealing addiction, self isolation from
family, and lack of self love. The idea of ruin and redemption is also present alongside the
characters setting. Theses characters live in a post 9/11 New York City
, where the towers are
destroyed, the streets and rivers are polluted, and surveillance is amplified, making New York
City reflect this theme in a mournful way. The same for the story Goodbye, My Love , Ted goes
to Italy, and notes the ways Naples is degrading. Theses images of ruin, that the characters are
consciousness of, are a representation of ruin in their own lives. Despite the self destruction that
each character faces throughout the novel, a counterbalance for the self destruction is created when
a sense of redemption is introduced. Two of the stories main

Article Caution Candles By Science World
Having knowledge of chemistry is important in life for some good reasons. One reason is
protecting yourself from obesity by buying specific nail polish. Another reason is knowing that
candles can hurt you. Finally you may find through your everyday Methane Camera there is
methane rising from Sweden s lakes. One Reason why having a knowledge of chemistryis important
in everyday life is to know what you are putting on your nails. In the article Problem Polish by
ScienceWorld, it says, We don t have a lot of information about how this chemical reacts in the
human body, says toxicologist Johanna Congleton of the Environmental Working Group, one of the
study s authors. But experiments on animals suggest that triphenyl phosphate may contribute to
obesity and interfere with reproductive and development hormones. This quote explains... Show

In the article Caution Candles by Science World, it states that, When Massoudi tested paraffin
candles in a special chamber, he found they emitted chemicals like toluene and benzene. Toluene
can affect the nervous system, and benzene has been linked to cancer. This quote tells you about
how candles aren t very romantic when you wake up with cancer after having your nerves being
tampered with, or just being an idiot and touching the flame.
A third reason why having a knowledge of chemistry is important in everyday life is knowing
what chemicals do such as methane gas and where they come from. In the article Methane
Camera by Science World, it states that, Swedish scientists have built a camera that can see
methane, a gas that s invisible to the naked eye. Methane acts as a powerful greenhouse gas,
meaning it traps heat in the atmosphere and contributes to global climate change. This is important
in everyday life because if you didn t you would have no idea what global warming is and the

Five Forces Analysis Video Gaming
Five Forces Analysis of the Video Game Industry The five forces that drive industry competition,
a model established by Michael Porter, are; threat of substitution, threat of new entrants,
bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, and intensity of rivalry. The video
game industry must deal with all five of these forces. The analysis of the strength of these five
forces within the video game industry will help to draw a conclusion as to whether or not it is an
attractive industry for Sony to be in. The threat of substitutes in the video game industry is
relatively low. Most customers are looking for a console that they can play games on and there
really isn t much else to choose from. One could say that computer... Show more content on

The main suppliers in the video game industry are the game makers. These companies pay a
royalty fee to the company that makes the console. Game makers have the decision to make
certain games exclusively for one console if they are paid enough money, for example Halo
made for the Xbox, or make them available on many different platforms. This threat is also
moderate for the game industry. The larger the variety of games as well as the better the quality
the more likely a customer is to buy one game console over another. The fourth force is that of
the bargaining power of the buyers. In the video game industry the buyers do not have very
much power, thus making this a weak threat. The buyers do not have much power because the
video game industry does not consist of many players. The lack in the customers choices means
that they are willing to pay a little more money to get such an item. The fifth and final force is
that of the intensity of rivalry. This is the strongest force in the video game industry. Nintendo
was very strategic in targeting an audience that Microsoft and Sony neglected. While Microsoft
and Sony focused on the typical gamers, males ages 18 34, Nintendo focused on a broader
audience everyone when creating their Wii. In the video game industry rivalry Microsoft and Sony
are battling for the same market, while Nintendo has much of its audience all to itself. This is why

My Thoughts On My Parent Fears
There is a risk, big or small, when you do something spontaneous. I am no stranger to danger or
outrageous circumstances, unfortunately most of these events happened in my home. I ve
been sheltered all my life as if I was a bird in a caged not allowed to venture out in the world. My
parent fears for my well being and meant well; however, they never expressed it in a healthy
way. They ruled with an iron fist and watched me around the clock. My mom dictated most of
my weekdays. For example: if I have to wait for her on campus, if I could stay for a make up test, or
on good rare days if I was granted time hang out with my friends on campus. My father had total

exactly is in there. Jorge. I whispered to myself. I look a bit further to the left. The pitch black
doorway to my parent s room was darker than usual like a black hole only allowing my father s
loud snores escape. I tipped toed into the livingroom. I passed by Jorge s mattress and walked to
the front door. I gripped the doorknob and realized the front door could give away my location
to my sleeping family with its creakiness. I retreat backwards into the kitchen s light. I felt the
butterflies in my stomach find their way to my throat. I had no idea what I was going to do. I

braided my hair and stuffed into my hoodie. I quickly but quietly made my way towards the

My Goals And Strengths And Weaknesses
Brooke Point High School has been my second home for the past three years and a half. There, I
have completed three Honors English classes, and I m currently in a Dual Enrollment course. In
those three years and a half, I have witnessed my writing skills develop and improve remarkably
over time, as well as my academic growth as a writer. Like every other writer, I have both strengths
and weaknesses. I rarely experience difficulty when it comes to grammar, putting my thoughts onto
paper, and researching. However, deciding what to write about and writinganalytical papers are
some of my weaknesses I have yet to overcome. Throughout my years in school, I have managed to
figure out my strengths and weaknesses, and continue to work to improveboth. Since starting high
school, I have found myself having less trouble with grammar, organizing my thoughts onto
paper, finishing the papers assigned to me on time, and researching. Although I once struggled
greatly with grammar, I don t see it as a problem anymore. The more I proofread and review the
papers I write, the less grammatical errors I find. Despite it taking me a while to figure out how
and what I want write about for certain papers and topics, I have always found it easy to put my
thoughts onto paper. Once I know what I want to write about, the thoughts come pouring in and I
find myself writing abundantly. Even though it takes me some time to figure it out at first, I still
manage to turn in my papers on time. Another

Life Outcomes of The Cultural Revolution
How did the disruption of the educational system during the Cultural Revolution affect the life
outcomes of people who were getting their educations in the period 1966 75? By using this as a
topic to question, I will be reviewing the impact of the lack of education had on people as they got
older and began looking for jobs in China. Although it may seem clear to many on why missing an
educationwould make it harder for one to obtain a job, I still think it needs to be looked into as
why this education was stopped, and following with the affects it had on people. There are three
elements to this idea of disruption of education. One side is that education was no longer the main
point, but that the revolution and the building of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was based on a length of time that system would be perfected, and reworked to fit the
people s needs. In urban areas, they began building courses about industry. Medical and health
sciences were seen as practical for the urban areas to study. Even smaller health services such as
family planning were made stronger and became a new variety of study. 1977 there was a
college entry exam, ...5.7 million people reportedly sought to take the exam, among which only
272,971 students were admitted for entrance (Yoshida) People who wanted to continue their
education were either forced to work on a rural farm for two years or show some other way of
devotion to the Socialist as proof that they were loyal to the country and wanted to make it
better. People raced for the chance of education because no one knew if or when it would
become banned. These people took the risks to study because they were so eager about
obtaining their education to better their lives and further career choices. For those who after all
this no longer wanted education to continue for them were still sent to the rural areas to give
them a taste of the hard work they would need to portray in order to make a good life for
themselves. It gave everyone a bit of backbone for the future. The second reason that education was
disrupted is that there was unqualified staff being hired to educate young minds. U,E (March 2014)

Religion and State have historically battled over value of importance. For centuries, laws have been
set forth to further the separation between the two. While good intentions were utilized in the
creation of these statutes, it is challenging to shift the mindset of civilians who have worshiped
religion above the state their entire lives. In the play, Antigone, Sophoclesdramatizes the division
between divine law and human law. Antigone personifies religion and the law of the gods, while
Creon exemplifies human law. Inevitably, the disputes between the two ultimately result in the
characters tragic fates. Sophocles uses a variety of literary techniques to strengthen the theme and
central conflict of religion versus law.
In Ancient Greek times, religion was known to play a direct and personal role in the lives of
citizens. The concept of the body in Greek culture was celebrated to meet the demands of the
gods, and the Ancient Greeks considered the physical body as something to be tended to. Without
a proper burial, it was understood that the body of the deceased would be doomed to wander the
Underworld in an eternal state of unrest. The importance of family, as stressed through religion, is
exemplified when Antigone becomes distraught over the fact that King Creon has outlawed the
proper burial of her older brother,

The College Tuition Crisis
College Tuition Crisis College tuition has been an increasingly intense topic of discussion over
the years. The costs of higher education have been debated by many people, and it has been
discussed as to whether costs are becoming too high for students to afford. College has become
more and more popular, and now as many as 20 million students attend universities reported by The
National Center for Education Statistics (1). The value of a college degree is immense, but college
tuitionis becoming too expensive for students to afford, and furthering the problem are students
lack of knowledge on how to pay and earn moneytowards their college degree. College has become
a norm in today s society so much so, that the average costs of higher educationare not really
discussed. A public two year in district college was $3,520 for a full time undergraduate student
in 2016 2017 (Baum 68). Baum also declares that a public four year in state undergraduate tuition
was $9,650; a public four year out of state college cost $24,930; a private nonprofit four year
college costs $33,480; and a for profit college cost $16,000 for that same school year. (68). Across
the nation, figures will vary because of the obvious geographical region differences, but also
because of price discrimination. Price discrimination allows institutions to discount their prices for a
lot of students (Baum 79). Institutions do this based on individual student circumstances, and it
segments the market. Institutions

A Call for the Continued Prohibition of Marijuana and...
A Call for the Continued Prohibition of Marijuana and Other Drugs Alcohol, if consumed in high
quantities, poses serious personal and public health and safety issues. In the realm of public safety,
engaging in said activity significantly impairs cognitive activity, affecting one s ability to utilize
proper judgment and operate machinery, among other things. Thus, operating machinery while
under the influence of alcohol puts not only the operator, but also others in the vicinity of the
operator, in danger of being harmed. This is a universally recognized and accepted reality. In the
realm of personal safety, long term alcohol abuse severely compromises major organs and bodily
function, chiefly among them the lungs and fluid operability of the blood vessels. Thus, excessive
alcoholic intake can lead to eventual chronic and debilitating health problems, such as liver cancer
and diabetes. This is also a universally recognized and accepted reality. It is because of the
widespread acceptance of these relative hazards that alcohol, although legal, has been seemingly
sequestered by American society into a niche category of vices that are appropriate when consumed
responsibly, but dangerous and overtly negative when consumed otherwise. Why then, has
marijuana seemed to sidestep this particular form of judgment and swung itself onto the complete
opposite end of the pendulum; the end that says it is completely harmless to consume? Whether one
points to popular culture, the efforts

The James Valcq s Musical Adaptation Of The Spitfire Grill
Something Was Cooking at the Spitfire Grill
Southern Utah University performed James Valcq s musical adaptation of The Spitfire Grill
(Valcq, 2016). The production overall was slightly above average. There were aspects of the
musical that worked perfectly to go along with the main seed of redemption. Ideas and concepts of
relationships, redemption, and continuity were successfully and less than successfully shared
through this play. I will be going over how I believe The Spitfire Grillconnected itself to the seed of
redemption through what I saw and felt throughout the show.
Waiting for the show to start was actually when the production started. While I sat in the house for
the show to start, the smell of someone s coffee filled the room. I was momentarily distracted by
trying to figure out who was the coffee culprit and how their cup of coffee could be so potent that
I could still smell it with only five minutes until show time. As I gave up that hunt, I read the plays
brochure and brought up a summary of the play on my phone. I quickly put two and two together:
1) The Spitfire Grill is a breakfast hub and 2) coffee is a breakfast staple. The house having an
aroma of freshly brewed coffee was completely intentional and lasted all throughout the first act. I
really enjoyed the sense of smell being involved with the audience because it made me feel as if I
was waiting for my order to arrive. The smell of coffee is also a comfort smell to me and only
made me feel comfy

People Express Airlines: Rise and Decline
I guess the single predominant reason that I cared about starting a new company was to try and
develop a better way for people to work together . . . that s where the name People Express came
from. Most organizations believe that humans are generally bad and you have to control them and
watch them and make sure they work. At People Express, people will be trusted to do a job until
they prove they definitely won t. Donald C. Burr Founder, CEO People Express Airlines Under
mounting pressure to permit more competition, Congress deregulated the airline industry in 1978.

The airline industry was viewed as a commodity business, but Burr saw a chance to offer a better
product to customers. (PE believed that customers, rather than passengers, created a more
appropriate mindset.) But taking advantage of deregulation was not the only reason Burr wanted to
start the company: greater, perhaps, was his desire to build a better organization one that was both
more productive and more fun than what he considered to be typical in American business. He was
tired of the politics and the beat them and they ll do more management styles he had seen all his
professional life. He was tired of what he called the deadening grind and lack of vision of T.I. s
business style. He wanted to design a new kind of airline, one that would provide both better and
cheaper service, and be an exciting and rewarding place to work. The focus of the company
would be on people: hence its name, People Express. From its inception, therefore, PE was seen
as a chance by Burr and his management team to experiment with and demonstrate a better way
of managing not just an airline, but any business. While Burr recognized his stance was contrary
to the majority of organizations in the United States, he rejected any insinuation that he was
optimistic or soft. I m not a goody two shoes person, I don t view myself as a social scientist, as a
minister, as a do gooder. I perceive myself as a hard nosed businessman, whose

Sexual Orientation, By Sarah Waters
Throughout human history, various minority groups find themselves the targets of prejudice,
discrimination, and even violent acts of hatred. One of the most notable ways in which the
struggles of these groups are documented and exemplified is through literature. Sexual orientation,
and more specifically homosexuality, is a prominent point of controversy within the world of fiction
writing, as well as through the nonfictional history of various societies. Sarah Waters Affinityis a
prime example of how history and fiction can intertwine. Waters wrote this novel in the 1990 s, but
set it in London during the Victorian Era. In order to create a realistic narrative, Waters had to ensure
that it was historically accurate, even down to the societal impact of Margaret s sexual preferences.
Though it was not overtly discussed, the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries marked the era in
which ...homosexuality in its modern form truly began to emerge (Willett 351). From the start of
Affinity, Margaret s emotional and psychological flaws are exposed through her diary. She also
reveals details about her relationship with Helen, which ultimately foreshadows the outcome of her
future romantic relationships. Many of Margaret s hardships come from the pressures that her
society puts on her and, in turn, she develops unhealthy relationships with those around her. Her
isolation plays a huge factor in her dependence on Selina, another woman who appears to be in the
same position as Margaret

Sample Size Determination Is An Important Part Of Any...
Sample size determination is an important part of any research. Probable size of study should be
considered, which is required to reach the study aims at the design phase. The figuring of a fitting
sample size depends on a subjective decision of certain elements and occasionally crude
approximate of others, and could as an outcome appear rather artificial (Whitley and Ball, 2002).
Thus, there are foremost three key factors which should be taken into account in computation of a
proper sample size(power and effect). The pro of utilizing a sample is that it is more
commonsense and less expensive than gathering data from the populace. The peril of choosing a
sample is that it is may not test may not enough mirror the practices, qualities, side effects, or
convictions of the populace sufficiently mirror of population symptoms or beliefs (Polit and
Hungler, 1999). Therefore, to decide a reasonable sample size by taking after equation was utilized
to decide the sample size (AL Rifa y, 1998, Ayyub and Mccuen, 2003).
ss=(z^2 x (p) x (1 p))/c^2
Where:
SS = Sample size
Z = Z value (e.g. 1.96 for 95% confidence level) p = percentage picking a choice, expressed as
decimal (0.5 used for sample size needed)
C = confidence interval, expressed as decimal (e.g., 0.05 = В±5)

LIke it said in one of the videos, it is not worth it to risk anything. If we are all just a little smarter

Depending on your situation, your physician may perform one or more of the following tests.
Blood tests evaluate hormone levels and ovarian function by measuring Day 3 FSH and AMH
levels. Your fertility specialist may also perform other blood tests tailored to your unique situation.
A transvaginal ultrasound allows your physician to see the size and shape of your uterus. It also
allows him or her to examine your uterine lining and check for abnormalities in your uterus and
ovaries.
A hysterosalpingogram, or HSG, can provide information about your fallopian tubes that cannot be
seen on an ultrasound. This test involves injecting dye into your uterus through a thin catheter. The
dye will appear on x ray to highlight any blockages in your fallopian tubes.
Genetic testing is available for you and your partner. Even if you and your partner have no history
of genetic disorders, either of you can still be a carrier. Our fertility specialists can recommend
specific tests based on your ethnic background and family history.

Gameplay Video Game Platforms For The Future
Formatting Video Game Platforms for the Future
Video games have hugely impacted world culture since the late 1970 s. Video game companies
like Atari and Midway helped lead this digital revolution by introducing arcade games such as
Pong, Pac Man, and Asteroids. Though Atari and Midway receive the most recognition for
beginning this videogame revolution, none of this would have been possible if not for Japanese
companies like Namco and Taito, who created the software for such games. Because of companies
like Namco and Taito the advancements of video gametechnology have led us to have mobile and
in home versions of our favorite games. In March 1980, the video game industry had made an
attempt to adapt to the everyday lives of people. Atari created the first successful in home video
game console called the Atari 26001. This 8 bit game console had the ability to bring the fun of
the arcade to the comfort of home. The Atari 2600 used game cartridges as seen to the left.
These cartridges were compact and almost unbreakable. Each cartridge s outside had a scene
from the game with a short description of what the game was about. By the mid 80 s there was a
great array of games for the Atari 2600 but there was also competition. In 1985 Nintendo created its
own 8 bit video game console called the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The NES had
games like The Mario Brothers and Donkey King. NES had blown up in Singapore but in America
it was another story. The NES was too

Pain And Nociception Research Paper
Introduction
Pain is an adaptive mechanism which helps us learn to avoid dangers, it used to be believed that
pain was an emotional state caused by intense stimuli and for 300 years people operated on
Descartes single wire theory, that pain is a disturbance passed along nerve fibres to the brain,
however, recent research into pain has come up with a more complex theory of nociception and
pain. Nociception is a sensory process that provides the signals that trigger pain, whereas pain is
the feeling of something unpleasant or an unbearable sensation arising from a part of the body. it is
possible to have pain without nociception and nociception without pain, for example, back pain
with no tissue damage is pain with no nociception and finding ... Show more content on

The first stage of nociception is transduction, this is the perception of a noxious (damaging)
stimulus, which activates high threshold nociceptors through multiple mechanisms, such as,
thermal (heat), mechanical (ligaments being stretched) and chemical. With chemical activation,
infection creates inflammation around the wound to promote healing, some chemicals produced
trigger nociceptors (sometimes constantly) and some lower threshold of activation for other
nociceptors (Basbaument et al 2009) meaning a person can often feel more pain. The second stage
of nociception is transmission; this is where the information detected is sent to brain by specialised
nerve pathways. AОґ fibres are fast and specific, due to them being myelinated and unimodal
(they respond to a specific type of pain per fibre) and C fibres conduct slow sensation as they are
unmyelinated and polymodal (responding to multiple types of pain per fibre). The final stage of
nociception is interpretation, this is where the brain processes painful stimuli and decides if it
should be acted on (if there is a danger). It is only at this point that pain can be felt. Nociceptors do
not send a pain signal but instead alert the brain to

The Character Of Romeo Montague in William Shakespeare s...
The Character Of Romeo Montague in William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet Romeo is one
of the main characters in Shakespeare s play Romeo and Juliet and is portrayed as a tragic figure,
who is guided by his destiny. Shakespeare initially introduces Romeo to be a romantic
sentimentalist, who is over obsessed with his own emotions. Romeo, however, loses these
personality traits towards the end of the play, and becomes more mature after falling deeply in love
with Juliet. His love for her is strong and over whelming, and Shakespeare vividly represents this by
dramatic visual moments throughout the play, culminating in the tragic climax of Romeo s suicide,
to join with his Juliet in death.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is one of the many themes that Shakespeare provides to suggest foreboding early on in the
play. The omen is ambiguous as it firstly implies Romeo is worrying about something that will
not happen and is generally nervous about arriving uninvited. However, it could imply that in
going to the Ball, he will meet Juliet, which will cause drastic events to happen, and eventually
lead to both their deaths. This is one of the main themes during the play and is successfully
entwined in Romeo s script to introduce foreboding to the audience without the character realising
it. He disregards the omen, and continues with his friends to the Ball. On arrival, he seeks
Rosaline, but his attentions rapidly divert to Juliet Capulet, She seems to hang upon the cheek of
night displays Romeo s persona to be fickle and to have a fluctuating nature. He had before
thought Rosaline to be beautiful, but now he sees Juliet as the most beautiful woman in the world.
This is one of the more romantic traits of Romeo, and Shakespeare uses many metaphors and
similes in Romeo s speech and successfully interlaces them to represent the poetic and child like
wonder that Romeo experiences when he sets eyes on Juliet. Romeo s role is consistent throughout
as The Romantic Lover ,

My Cultural Identity In Remember The Titans
What is cultural identity? What is my cultural identity? We can go into my mind to see what we
can find. I am a calm, easygoing, relaxed, athletic, and a somewhat independent latin american
person. I believe this because I am easy to get along with, I sometimes want to do things on my
own, and I exercise and play sports. Since I am latin, I have to speak spanish at home or around
my family, but I speak english outside of home. My parents don t speak english, so they use me as
a translator wherever we go. This is a somewhat representation of my cultural identity. We will find
out the rest of my cultural identity with a representation of my rosary, watching Remember the

My favorite movie is Remember the Titans. It is a sports and drama movie, directed by Boaz Yakin,
which also directed other films like Max, and Safe. Denzel Washington and Will Patton star in the
film as the coaches of the football team. The message is to never judge a book by its cover. In
Virginia high school football is a way of life, it s celebrated like a National holiday. In 1971 high
school football was everything to the people of Alexandria, Virginia. Until in 1971 the local

foundation of football s great tradition was put to the test. But the movie is more than just football.

How I Remember Squatting In The Dust Analysis
The narrator starts the story lamenting on her past. She mentions the miserable state she has
always lived in, bringing up what is assumed to be the Great Depression. Our narrator has
childhood memories set during the Great Depression, an event lasting a decade from the late
1920s to late 1930s. She states that she was fourteen approaching fifteen years old. The real
variable is how long after her anecdote does this story take place? She clearly expresses her
dislike for the conditions in which she grew up. She makes several comments on how herself and
the black workers of rural Maryland would be treated today. Probably written about and studied
like a new species, when their state of poverty and suffering was nothing new. The almost cynical

Her diction is one of an educated adult, or at least a well spoken college student. She uses strong

Introduction
The Chapelhow et al. (2005) effectively portrays a framework that provides patients with an
approach to person centered care. It provides health professionals with important aspects that allow
them to perform in an effective way that has the best interests of the patients at heart. The
characteristics it outlines are assessment, communication, risk management, record keeping and
documentation, professional decision making and managing uncertainty.
For the purpose of this assignment I have chosen to reflect the care given to a middle aged
gentlemen in a hospice setting. In compliance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
code of conduct (2008) it is increasingly important to receive full consent to use a patient for this
case study. As non verbal consent was used I will reflect later how this was obtained. Therefore I
will go ahead in using this patient however, I will ensure that the patient and place of practice
remains anonymous due to confidentiality. Maintaining confidentiality is a significant part to a nurse
s role as stated in the NMC Code of Conduct (2008):

others . Therefore I will refer to the patient as Jeremy Benson.
Background
Jeremy is a fifty five year old gentlemen who suffers from Motor Neurone Disease (MND). This

How Does Sam Mendes Use Camera Angles In American Beauty
American Beauty
Respond critically to significant aspects of visual and/or text(s) through close reading, supported by
evidence.
Sam Mendes is an intelligent and sophisticated director who has created many award winning films
during his career. Some characteristics of his directorial style are; camera work with the specific
use of close up s and the zooming effect, lighting/colour to symbolise characters/items and use
sound to create tension and anticipation in the audience. I have chosen Mendes s 1999 masterpiece
American Beauty to study and analyse. This film has scenes that incorporate all of Mendes s
described characteristics and that help to give me a clear understanding of Mendes s directional
style.
Mendes uses the same camera work in both of the dining room scenes in American Beauty to
create tension with the audience and to emphasise characters expressions and emotions to the
viewers, leaving us in no doubt what each character is feeling. This allows the audience to
understand each character more effectively and as a result, it challenges us to think about how
we might feel in the same situation. A scene, in American Beauty, that Mendes uses effective
camera work to enhance the audiences view of the characters is the dining room scene that
features Lester, his wife Caroline and his daughter Jane. When the scene starts, Mendes uses a
background music that sounds just like elevator music; Beli high: musical Pacific, with close up
shots of pictures when Jane was younger and a vase full of red roses. However, as the scene
continues Mendes uses a wide shot to show the entire dining room, this frame was then gradual
zooming in up until the frame stopped in a position where you could see a mid shot of each
character sitting at the table. When the conversation had started from Lester the audience could
see how disengaged his wife and daughter were. They weren t interested in how his day went,
they only cared about themselves. When the close ups are on Lester, the audience gets a vivid
picture of a man who has lost his true self and who is already dead inside . Whereas when the
close ups are on Jane or Caroline, you see someone who is pained from the discomfort of certain
people around them Jane or

Components Of Engineering Design And Analysis
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1. ENGINEERING MATERIALS Materials are an important
aspect of engineering design and analysis. The importance of engineering materials can be noted
from the fact that historical ages have been named after materials. Materials Science forms the basic
foundation for engineers in product development because the structures, components, and devices
that design are limited by the properties of the materials. In the customer driven competitive
business environment, the product quality is of paramount importance [1]. The product or end
application quality has been found to be influenced by the engineering design, type of materials
selected and the processing technology employed. Therefore, the importance of engineering
materials and their process techniques are art of today s engineering world. There are wide
categories of materials available which have shown their potential in various engineering
applications ranging from aerospace to household. The materials are usually selected by
considering their properties, specific application areas, advantages and limitations. The challenge
for designers is to select an optimal material suitable for the specific design requirements. The
complex design need in modern science generally lead to development of newer materials to meet
the specific operating conditions and regimes [1]. The new materials are today developed from the
conventional materials by both structural and surface (extrinsic) modifications. In

The Importance Of Physical Fitness For College Athletes
Physical fitness is vital for many college athletes. Things like muscle strength, muscular
endurance, anaerobic, and aerobic power are crucial to success of the athlete s performance. The
vital physical fitness of the athletes is to increase training sessions before the season and during
season. Some of these training session that college athletes participate in can lead to an increase in
stress on certain muscles. These muscles weaken over time due to the athlete not giving a proper
time to recover from training and playing. The most common injury for athletes are kneeinjuries.
Some of the most common, but are not limited to, include ACL, MCL, patellofemoral pain, and
strains. Knee braces are the most common way of helping reduce knee pain and prevent any
further damage to the joint. Though helpful knee braces can sometimes be uncomfortable, are not
always supportive enough, and are bulky. Due to these inconveniences, many athletes are turning
to other alternative like Kinesio tape (K tape). Kinesio tape has been used for many years and
has helped many famous athletes like Kerri Walsh Jennings, James Harden with their pain. Now it
is more common for athletes in high schools and colleges to use Kinesio tape because of its
effectiveness and easy application and removal. Kinesio tape and knee braces have been under
debate recently on which one would be more effective to use during physical activity.
Some of the research supports that Kinesio tape has helps reduce pressure to

Purpose of the study
The main purpose of this study was to ascertain how lipid transport molecules LDL, HDL, and
triglycerides are linked to neuropsychological function.
Hypothesis (es)
The authors of this study made the hypothesis that elevated levels of triglycerides and LDL
cholesterol would be related to decreased neuropsychological function, with a greater link in the
scopes of memory and executive function.
Participants
A total of 74 females and 46 males participated in this study. All these participants were taken from
two different studies, yet it is to be noted that these studies overlapped one another. The
participants were chosen on the premise of having existing or an absence of cerebrovascular
disease (CVD) risk components, for example, cholesterol, blood pressure, and an atypical regulated
glucose. Out of the one hundred twenty three participants in this study, thirty one of these
participants were chosen from a larger sample taken from the Harvard Cooperative Program on

There are numerous examples of poor clinical practice in nursing (Halldorsdottir, 1997;

Schutte et al, 1998, 2007; Mayer et al, 2002; Petrides et al, 2003) it may now be possible to

Nursing Drug Abuse Essay
Drug Abuse: A Recommendation for Acts of Prevention In Hospitals
Within the past year, nurses with Annie Penn Hospital have been involved in over three hundred
situations that led to significant changes in the hospital s surveillance and protocol. Many nurses
have been taking non prescription drugs while on the job causing impaired judgement, which leads
to complications during surgeries. These encounters have prompted a series of outraged families
demanding justice, and the United States oldest non profit healthcare organization has decided that
there has to be a change in hospital protocol. Recently, Mayor Donecker has made
recommendations to the local hospital to adopt surprise drug tests as the preferred approach to
discovering the potential impaired nurses. The response from the nurses to the mayor s call to
change protocol have been both negative and positive. As the head CRNA, I have been asked to

Homeschooling Is An Effective Education
Mahatma Gandhi once said There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a
virtuous parent. Homeschooling has evolved into a popular and fast growing alternative to
traditional schooling. In 2003, there was an estimated of 1.1 million homeschooled children, and in
2007 homeschooling had continued to grow to over 1.5 million. Opponents of the homeschooling
method argue that parents are not as qualified to educate their children as teachers are; therefore,
their children will not measure up to the academic level of traditionally schooled children.
Additionally, they argue that homeschooled children will not be on the same social level as
children in regular schools and will lack adequate social skills for the real... Show more content on

Finally, other studies say that parents who home school are spending too much time with their
kids and are swaddling them. (Jeub) Homeschooling disproves all the arguments above. Jeub
affirms that parents are not their child s main educator, but their child learns independently
because of his desire to learn. No matter how qualified parents are, homeschooled children have
proven to excel academically. Also, homeschooling allows children to learn at their own pace.
Every curriculum is designed for a specific child. Individualized learning allows all children s
needs to be met. Homeschooling gives freedom to learn at their own level unlike public schools,
where every child must learn a set curriculum in order to keep up with the class. In response to the
argument that homeschooled children spend too much time with their parents, they actually have
positive relationships with their parents and other adults in the community. Instead of looking at
adults as disciplinarians, many view adults as their mentors as their jobs, other home school
parents, or family friends. Lisa Revero adds that homeschooling provides an environment for the
family to learn and live together harmoniously and frequently unlike a traditionally schooled
family where spending family time is often rare. Life revolves around jobs, endless carpools,
sports games, and play practice, leaving little time for the family to

Comparison Of Modernism In A Streetcar Named Desire And A...
The word modernism in literature means something new and untraditional that reevaluates the
accepted principles of our world. Modernism is a style of writing that became popular in the
early 1900 s. This style was developed in the period of WWI, a time of many important social
changes. A Streetcar Named Desire and A Long Day s Journey Into Night are two plays that
exemplify the style of modernism. Journey is a modernist novel with a tragic storyline about the
Tyrone family. The main conflict in Streetcar is modernist because of the traditional, fundamentalist
thinking. Each of these plays contains a character who represents a very important aspect of
modernist literature: the burden of the past. This device is used distinctively in each of these two
plays. While some similarities between Blanche Duboisand Mary Tyrone are evident, their
differences are notable.
Blanche Dubois, from A Streetcar Named Desire, carries the heavy burden of her past. Blanche
was in love with a young man. She discovered her husband in bed with an older man, someone
whom she had believed was just his friend. When confronted about the incident, he took his own
life by shooting himself in the head. Compounding the sorrow of her husband s violent suicide,
Blanche becomes increasingly fragile with the loss of the DuBois family home, Belle Reve. After

Discuss Smith s Ideas On The Division Of Labour
Explain and Evaluate Smith s Ideas on the Division of Labour:
A core part of dominant ideology is the split between state and market is this valid? Is this true?
One of Adam Smith s main focuses was the problem of the relationship between money and the
state. Adam Smith can be seen as pioneering in questioning the role of the state, as he was
seemingly the first to propose a systematic model of the economy that was independent of the state.
He attempts to explain how society should organise economics from the perspective of what is
naturally occurring. In doing this he finds that what should be and what can be are profoundly
interlinked. This revolutionary thinking went against mercantilism, which was the dominant
approach of the time period.
Mercantilism can be understood as an economic model that was characterized by government
intervention. Mercantilism was an alliance between merchants and the state that was premised on
increasing the power and wealth of the state through growing certain sections of the economy. It
was formed by the concerns of the time, such as a need to maintain new and expensive militaries,
the rise of the nation state, and crises and shortages of money.
Adam Smith s wrote The Wealth of Nations (1776) primarily as an attack on the economic
mercantilist system of the day. Smith aimed to demolish the mercantilist beliefs that money was an
end, and that the accumulation of wealth could be identified with the accumulation of money, and

Summary Of Magical Realism In A Very Old Man With Enormous...
The phrase magical realism in the context of literature was first coined by the Cuban novelist
Alejo Carpentier to describe the combination of the fantastic and everyday occurrences in Latin
American fiction. Over time, the term has been vastly modified by writers from a plethora of
backgrounds. Nevertheless, magical realism still refers to the tendency to mix the magical and
terrestrial in a context of realistic narration, as seen in the works of Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez.
Born in Columbia, Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez introduces readers to magical realism through one of
his short stories A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by combining earthly and fantastic
elements to create an image of an ordinary society with mythical creatures. In his work, Gabriel
GarcГa MГЎrquez effectively illustrates the coexistence of cruelty and moralityin society through
the strategic utilization of magical realism. Traditionally, many myths and legends portray angels as
elegant, beautiful creatures, but in MГЎrquez s short storythe angel is portrayed as a disease
infected ragpicker (MГЎrquez 1). The story begins when Pelayo and Elisenda, MГЎrquez s main
characters, discover an old man lying in their courtyard. They are unsure of his origins, but know
that he has enormous wings and speak in an incomprehensible dialect (MГЎrquez 1). Despite these

Victoria s Alright When He Never Goes Away
Victoria s alright for now but she knows Jonesy will be back soon, he never goes away for long.
What will he want from her today? Will he make her laugh? Will he make her cry? Things never
used to be like this. When Victoria first met Jonesy he was everything she d ever dreamed of. He
would comfort her, keep her warm, make all the problems of the world simply melt away. What
happened to those days? She finds herself thinking more often than not of now. At first, Victoria
figured that her and Jonesy would conquer the world together, it had seemed that way. She was

Victoria was different back then just like Jonesy was. Youthful, pretty, full of energy and always
fun to be around. Not the wacked out, aged hag she stares at in the mirror every morning. She
should probably start getting herself cleaned up for Jonesy. When he gets here he ll want her
looking her best, he always does. Not for him anymore, but for the countless slobs he ll send her
out to please tonight. He ll kill her if she doesn t earn for him. Victoria wonders just how many
naГЇve, stupid girls he s done this to? How many others will he visit today, she knows she can t
be the only one. He s close now, she can feel herself beginning to sweat as he draws near, she can
feel herself beginning to tremble. Victoria loved him, the love of her lifetime turned into a

Disappearing Machiya
3.1 Disappearing Machiya Due to ageing of the building, the number of Machiya are decreasing

the Japanese economy started receding about 15 years ago, existence of Machiya are in the

According to a survey conducted in 2003, more than 50% of matey residents stated that finical

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) Essay
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK)
In world history, those who have helped to build the same culture are not necessarily of one race,
and those of the same race have not all participated in one culture. In scientific language, culture is
not a function of race (Benedict). The sad fact is that many races are discriminated against.
Discrimination is defined as the act of perceiving and making evident the distinctions between two
different groups of people. There have been many groups that have been very discriminating, but
the one that sticks out like a diamond in coal is the Ku Klux Klan.
The original Ku Klux Klan was formed, in April 1866, as a social organization for ex confederates
in Pulaski, Tennessee. This was during the time after the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

power even though they were veering away from their main idea of restricting the south from
reconstruction.
By doing many of these activities the KKK very effectively managed to keep blacks away from
the voting booths. Many Klansmen were elected into office because the black community could not
vote. Even though the white supremacists were in office, they did not do as much as they would
have hoped. Officials did not accomplish the idea of minimizing black power and increasing white
supremacy.
The Ku Klux Klan power did diminish in 1870 and 1871, when congress passed the Force Bill
(Columbia). This bill stated that one could not restrict another s right to vote, which the KKK
was doing. Another attempt to try to stop the KKK was the KKK acts of 1870 and 1871. After
the KKK was proven to be violent, these laws that were formally passed disbanding the KKK in
1871 (Benet s). Even though these bills and acts were passed, the KKK still survived.

The Importance Of Respect In Society Today
We use it every day. Your parents tell you about it all the time. Most don t know exactly what it
means. Respect. To have respect is to hold oneself worthy of your admiration or approval. Society
cannot function without respect because it is the oil that keeps the gears turning. Respect is
actively listening, obeying orders, and being mindful, whether it s to others, the environment, the
law, or yourself.
In today s society, respect is decreasing. In schools, in the workplace, at home, and in public with
racism, sexism, religious intolerance, and more. Racism and police brutality have increased since
cases like of Trayvon Martin and Freddie Gray. Peopleof color have not received the respect they
deserve and respect for policemen is decreasing. Sexism has increased since third wave feminists
surfaced and skewed people s image and respect for feminists. Religious intolerance increases as
terrorist attacks continue with people s misconceptions about Islam. An example of a group
lacking respect in society today is the youth. The youth isn t anywhere near as respectful to their
parents, teachers, or elders as they were before the nineteen hundreds. But to make the youth more
respectful, one must respect the youth. Jenni Herd wrote in response to Times s Moods and
meltdowns: what s inside the teenage brain? , [We re] angry that we have to clean up your mess,
while you hold us in contempt, analyzing our responses as though we were another species? I

Huckleberry Finn Should Not Be Banned
Why The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Should Not Be Banned
Banning books gives us silence when we need speech. It closes our ears when we need to listen.
It makes us blind when we need sight, Stephen Chbosky. Books open up people s minds to new
ideas and allow people to the world in a new light. Banning books only makes one want to read
those books more to learn and poder over the controversial issues. One controversially banned novel
is the The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This book while still has lessons to teach people in
today s society, including the ignorance of racism to addressing modern day issues; therefore The
Adventures of Huckleberry FInn should not be banned.
In today s society religion and race are still prominent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students should not only be immersed into the topic of slavery, but also taught how to properly
address racial slurs, especially due to the prevalence of them in today s culture. The word nigger is
used often in today s culture and before reading the book students have already heard the word
regardless of its negative connotation. About the use of the word in society, Pitts remarked, Kids
use it...artists use it, the black rap artists use it, as you know, as I well know. Brothers use it all
the time..when they talk to each other, (qtd. in Huckleberry ). Even if the book is banned due to
racial slurs, students will still experience the racial slurs outside of the classroom. While shielding
students from the racial slurs may seem like it is beneficial, it is actually hurting students because if
the issue is not dealt with and discussed in the classroom than they lack that learning in the real
world. Students need a safe learning environment, especially for difficult issues.
The novel not only helps teach valuable lessons, the novel educates youth about slavery and
prejudice. If the novel is taken away, the youth s education is degrading and furthermore society as
a whole. When a topic is controversial that does not mean the novel should be banned solely
because it may raise questions and leads to intellectual discussions; rather that topic should be
shared to educate everyone to think deeper and to question society. Discomfort and controversy
lead to a greater

Jackson Pollock Summary Expressionism
Jackson Pollock was an influential American painter, and the main pressure in the back of the
abstract expressionist movement within the artwork global. Throughout his lifetime, Pollock
enjoyed massive repute and notoriety. Jackson Pollock s greatness lies in developing one of the
most radical summary patterns inside the records of contemporary artwork, detaching line from
colour, redefining the kinds of drawing and painting, and locating new method to explain pictorial
space. Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming in 1912. His father, LeRoy Pollock became a
farmer and later a land surveyor for the authorities. Jackson Pollock grew up in Arizona and Chico,
California. At some stage in his childhood, Pollock experienced native American... Show more

inevitable expropriation of the avant garde Pollock continuously puzzled the course and
reception of his artwork. At the height of his reputation, Pollock all at once abandoned the drip

Socrates Death Argument Analysis
Brian Frias
Professor Pereira
Philosophy 100 M/W 8 9:15
9 February 2015
Socrates Death Arguments Socrates was an ancient philosopher set in Athens, Greece. Socrates,
being known for stirring up arguments amongst the city s wisest men, grew widely unpopular in the
community. This unpopularity, and many other troubles led Socratesto be accused and sentenced to
trial for corrupting the youth, and of not believing in the Gods of the city. During Socrates trial, he
brings up arguments about why we should not fear death, just as he does not. In this essay I will
cover Socrates two arguments about death, their inconsistencies, and explain why Socrates changed
his position about death towards the end of the trial. While Socrates is being held ... Show more

He starts to talk about how this penalty of death is actually a good thing for him, and he is not
angry for it. Socrates then clearly says that he has proof that death is good. He starts to say that
death is a blessing and there are either two different scenarios of death. The first scenario of
death is having no perception of anything at all and having your soul relocated, like a great
dreamless sleep, which in Socrates eyes is truly a blessing. The second is in which your soul is
relocated elsewhere, you are able to talk to others that have passed like great figures from the past.
The alleged inconstancy is clear between these two arguments. The first argument Socrates states
that he does not fear death because he has no clue what lies beyond. He cannot fear what he does
not know of. With both arguments he is very confident in what he is saying, especially with the
second argument claiming that he has proof that death is good. In the second argument Socrates
says that death can be two things and then proceeds to explain what death is. In that argument, by
stating what death is, he is clearly saying that he has some knowledge about death and is
completely contradicting his first

Mixed Bloods Are The Ones Who Succeed In Life
Deconstruction
Why is it that Aboriginal people who have mixed blood are the ones who succeed in life?
Introduction
The assumption that only Aboriginal peoples who have mixed blood succeed in life is portrayed
by Westerners due to many factors. The belief that white blood or one raceis superior over another
has been put in front of people since the beginning of time. Although we like to believe that today
this belief has died a long time ago, it still manages to pop up from time to time. This can be
caused by stereotypes, history and unintentional ideas from the government. The assumption of
mixed bloods succeeding in life can be quite different from one person to another, as everyone has
different views on success due to gender,

College Essay On Trail Horses
Trail riding with horses can be a very fun, and relaxing experience. For defining purposes, a trail
ride is riding a horse outdoors on roads such as trails, forest roads, or similar pathways that are not
normally subjected to traffic of the motorized type. These rides can be of varying length, terrain,
and difficulty. While this can be a very enjoyable experience, there are still things one must keep in
mind before taking off on an adventure such as this. While virtually any horsecan be trained
successfully to ride on trail rides, there are some breeds in particular that possess certain traits
that lead to superior trailing. Qualities to look for in prospective trail horses are patience and sure
footedness. It s also very important to make sure these horses won t spook easily, because you
never know what you might come across during a trail ride. There are five horse breeds in
particular that have proved to have these qualities, therefore making them better suited to trail
riding. These horses are the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When on trail rides you will often come across things your horse will have to step over, such as
logs or other objects found in nature. Your horse has to be patient, in case you have to stop and
wait for any reason during your ride. A horse that spooks easily is also not ready for trail rides,
considering you can t always control what will and will not appear to spook them during that
time. Lastly, trail riding is more often than not a group activity. Depending on the size of the
pathway you re on, your horse will have to be in fairly close quarters to other horses and their
riders. If your horse isn t able to do this safely and patiently, you will have to train so they are
until you can go on trail rides. Safety should always come first when riding your horse, and an
unprepared or unsuitable horse can bring immense danger to other horses and riders on the trail.

Negative Effects Of Sweatshops
Would you ever purposely go to a place where you would feel unsafe and uncomfortable?
Imagine having no other option but having to go to that place everyday because there was no
other alternative? Well that is the case for people in developing countries that work in factories,
better known as sweatshops making products for big name brands. They have to go to a work
environment where they do not feel safe nor comfortable everyday while the factory owners
willing know this and don t do anything about it. The workers for these companies go to earn a
wage that they are not able to live off of. Most of the facilities in which these workers make
products are buildings that are unsafe. Buildings without proper ventilation, and most of the
products that are constructed at these facility have to be dyed with hazardous chemicals that
give off dangerous fumes. In the film The True Cost one of the scenes of the inside of one of the
factories there is a mom working while her baby was laying on the ground below her. This image
is speaks loud. It screams unsafe, and unfair. Moms who are workers for these factories shouldn t
have to be placed through this while their managers know this is happening they do nothing about
it. In 2013 a factory building that was located in the Savar Upazilain the Dhaka Districtin
Bangladesh collapsed killing more than one thousand workers. This is a perfect example of how
managers in these facilities pay little attention to the severity of the working

Positive Influences Of The Internet Essay
In 1983, an invention was introduced that would shape the future of American society and
interactions around the world. The society would begin to be centered around technology and shift
online. A plethora of advantages and societal changes has sparked negative thoughts about how the
internet has changed our lives. The ability for our computers to communicate has left us as easy
targets for hackers and has sucked the American youth into a zombie like state into their phones.
Many worry the internetis degrading our culture. When referring to the invention of writing and
reading, Plato denounced writing as inhuman and warned that writing weakened the mind and that
it threatened to destroy people s memory (Furedi). People are often scared of new innovations
because they are aware of its potential to revolutionize their culture. Adjusting to unfamiliar
concepts and innovations can be uncomfortable and difficult for most people. Similarly, modern
day sceptics look at the internet in a negative light because of its rapidly increasing impact on our
society. What most tend to forget is the positive influences of the internet. The increased
interconnection brought by the internet has led to a society that values productivity, rapid
production of ideas, and social awareness.
The idea of the internet first appeared in August of 1962 from J.C.R. Licklider, a professor at
MIT. He came up with a concept called Galactic Network , an idea that envisioned a network of
computers

  • 2. Essay on Labor Unions Labor Unions Labor Unions: Aging Dinosaur or Sleeping Giant? The Labor Movement and Unionism Background and Brief History Higher wages! Shorter workdays! Better working conditions! These famous words echoed throughout the United States beginning in 1790 with the skilled craftsmen (Dessler, 1997, p. 544). For the last two hundred years, workers of all trades have been fighting for their rights and seeking methods of improving their living standards, working conditions, and job security (Boone, 1996,p.287). As time went by, these individuals came to the conclusion that if they work together collectively, they would grow stronger to get responses to their demands. This inspired into what we know today as labor unions. A labor union... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 57). In December 1886, the American Federation of Labor (AFL) was formed in Columbus, Ohio. The AFL was originally named the Federated Organization of Trades and Labor Union back in 1881. The AFL was a national union made up of affiliated, individual craftunions (Boone, 1996, p. 288). The first president of the AFL was Samuel Gompers. On the contrary to the Knights of Labor, Gompers focus was to raise day to day wages, and continue to improve the working conditions (Dessler, 1997). After the formation of the AFL, the period included significant developments. In the early 1890 s, the United Mine Workers was formed, becoming the first major United States industrialized union (Robinson, 1985). In addition, a significant defeat occurred in organized labor. The defeat is known as the strike at Homestead, Pennsylvania. The Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers was eliminated from the steel industry (Robinson, 1985, p. 58). History from 1905 to 1920. In 1905, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) challenged the AFL, prior to the depression of the 1930 s. The IWW invited the unskilled and semiskilled workers that the AFL had denied and was a success from 1910 to 1915 (Encyclopedia, 1996). The results of this had decreased the AFL membership for a short period of time, but they fought back by bringing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Coca Cola And A Low Calorie Cola With each day, the advertisement industry is growing, becoming one of the most undeviating parts of our lives. According to statistics, one third of all commercials are produced right here in the United States. Being home to major multi national companies, the United States witnesses both excellent and atrocious ads. While many firms have failed dreadfully sometimes to promote their products through the help of a commercial, Coca cola has always flourished in this sector. Coca Cola managed to produce astounding ads by consistently creating an emotional connection with its audience. With the launch of its new soda Coca Cola Life in Buenos Aires Argentina, The Coca Cola companyhas released another scintillating and heartwarming commercial along with it. The sixty second Coca Cola ad advocates Coca Cola Life, a low calorie cola that is naturally sweetened with stevia leaf extract and sugar. By chronicling the joys and pains of parenting and by portraying a family environment, Coca Cola effectively elicits from viewers that connect their product with a sense of the warmth of a peaceful family life. Thousands of ads have tackled the highs and lows of first time parenting but none quite as magnificently as this. At the end of the commercial, it sends out a message, Destapa Tu Naturaleza. Substantially, the brand s campaign invites consumers to open their good nature. Eventually, they synthesized the idea of parenting and good nature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Visit From The Goon Squad Analysis Every work of literature requires a theme for it to be worth reading. Jennifer Egan s A Visit from the Goon Squad mainly presents the theme of ruin and redemption throughout the novel. This theme is present alongside with other minor themes like the shift of American culture, and how the characters self centered ways are crush by time. All of the major characters will find themselves at some sort of low point in their lives throughout the novel. Jocelyn becomes addicted to drugs and spends a great amount of her adult life going in and out of rehab; Benny will lose his record label contract and will be seen as a failure by most of those still in the industry; and Sasha will show falling into ruin due to her stealing addiction, self isolation from family, and lack of self love. The idea of ruin and redemption is also present alongside the characters setting. Theses characters live in a post 9/11 New York City , where the towers are destroyed, the streets and rivers are polluted, and surveillance is amplified, making New York City reflect this theme in a mournful way. The same for the story Goodbye, My Love , Ted goes to Italy, and notes the ways Naples is degrading. Theses images of ruin, that the characters are consciousness of, are a representation of ruin in their own lives. Despite the self destruction that each character faces throughout the novel, a counterbalance for the self destruction is created when a sense of redemption is introduced. Two of the stories main ... • 5. Article Caution Candles By Science World Having knowledge of chemistry is important in life for some good reasons. One reason is protecting yourself from obesity by buying specific nail polish. Another reason is knowing that candles can hurt you. Finally you may find through your everyday Methane Camera there is methane rising from Sweden s lakes. One Reason why having a knowledge of chemistryis important in everyday life is to know what you are putting on your nails. In the article Problem Polish by ScienceWorld, it says, We don t have a lot of information about how this chemical reacts in the human body, says toxicologist Johanna Congleton of the Environmental Working Group, one of the study s authors. But experiments on animals suggest that triphenyl phosphate may contribute to obesity and interfere with reproductive and development hormones. This quote explains... This quote tells you about how candles aren t very romantic when you wake up with cancer after having your nerves being tampered with, or just being an idiot and touching the flame. A third reason why having a knowledge of chemistry is important in everyday life is knowing what chemicals do such as methane gas and where they come from. In the article Methane Camera by Science World, it states that, Swedish scientists have built a camera that can see methane, a gas that s invisible to the naked eye. Methane acts as a powerful greenhouse gas, meaning it traps heat in the atmosphere and contributes to global climate change. • 6. Five Forces Analysis Video Gaming Five Forces Analysis of the Video Game Industry The five forces that drive industry competition, a model established by Michael Porter, are; threat of substitution, threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, and intensity of rivalry. The video game industry must deal with all five of these forces. The analysis of the strength of these five forces within the video game industry will help to draw a conclusion as to whether or not it is an attractive industry for Sony to be in. The threat of substitutes in the video game industry is relatively low. Most customers are looking for a console that they can play games on and there really isn t much else to choose from. One could say that computer... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main suppliers in the video game industry are the game makers. These companies pay a royalty fee to the company that makes the console. Game makers have the decision to make certain games exclusively for one console if they are paid enough money, for example Halo made for the Xbox, or make them available on many different platforms. This threat is also moderate for the game industry. The larger the variety of games as well as the better the quality the more likely a customer is to buy one game console over another. The fourth force is that of the bargaining power of the buyers. In the video game industry the buyers do not have very much power, thus making this a weak threat. The buyers do not have much power because the video game industry does not consist of many players. The lack in the customers choices means that they are willing to pay a little more money to get such an item. The fifth and final force is that of the intensity of rivalry. This is the strongest force in the video game industry. Nintendo was very strategic in targeting an audience that Microsoft and Sony neglected. While Microsoft and Sony focused on the typical gamers, males ages 18 34, Nintendo focused on a broader audience everyone when creating their Wii. In the video game industry rivalry Microsoft and Sony are battling for the same market, while Nintendo has much of its audience all to itself. This is why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I am no stranger to danger or outrageous circumstances, unfortunately most of these events happened in my home. I ve been sheltered all my life as if I was a bird in a caged not allowed to venture out in the world. My parent fears for my well being and meant well; however, they never expressed it in a healthy way. They ruled with an iron fist and watched me around the clock. My mom dictated most of my weekdays. For example: if I have to wait for her on campus, if I could stay for a make up test, or on good rare days if I was granted time hang out with my friends on campus. When I hear the shower water go on, I know who exactly is in there. Jorge. I whispered to myself. I look a bit further to the left. The pitch black doorway to my parent s room was darker than usual like a black hole only allowing my father s loud snores escape. I tipped toed into the livingroom. There, I have completed three Honors English classes, and I m currently in a Dual Enrollment course. In those three years and a half, I have witnessed my writing skills develop and improve remarkably over time, as well as my academic growth as a writer. Like every other writer, I have both strengths and weaknesses. I rarely experience difficulty when it comes to grammar, putting my thoughts onto paper, and researching. However, deciding what to write about and writinganalytical papers are some of my weaknesses I have yet to overcome. Throughout my years in school, I have managed to figure out my strengths and weaknesses, and continue to work to improveboth. Since starting high school, I have found myself having less trouble with grammar, organizing my thoughts onto paper, finishing the papers assigned to me on time, and researching. Although I once struggled greatly with grammar, I don t see it as a problem anymore. The more I proofread and review the papers I write, the less grammatical errors I find. Despite it taking me a while to figure out how and what I want write about for certain papers and topics, I have always found it easy to put my thoughts onto paper. Life Outcomes of The Cultural Revolution How did the disruption of the educational system during the Cultural Revolution affect the life outcomes of people who were getting their educations in the period 1966 75? By using this as a topic to question, I will be reviewing the impact of the lack of education had on people as they got older and began looking for jobs in China. Although it may seem clear to many on why missing an educationwould make it harder for one to obtain a job, I still think it needs to be looked into as why this education was stopped, and following with the affects it had on people. • 10. Divine Law Vs. Human Law English A, Literature ― HL Written Assignment Divine Law vs. Human Law West Islip High School LГ©na Seltzer 003996 0069 May 2017 1472 Words Religion and State have historically battled over value of importance. For centuries, laws have been set forth to further the separation between the two. While good intentions were utilized in the creation of these statutes, it is challenging to shift the mindset of civilians who have worshiped religion above the state their entire lives. In the play, Antigone, Sophoclesdramatizes the division between divine law and human law. Antigone personifies religion and the law of the gods, while Creon exemplifies human law. Inevitably, the disputes between the two ultimately result in the characters tragic fates. Sophocles uses a variety of literary techniques to strengthen the theme and central conflict of religion versus law. In Ancient Greek times, religion was known to play a direct and personal role in the lives of citizens. The concept of the body in Greek culture was celebrated to meet the demands of the gods, and the Ancient Greeks considered the physical body as something to be tended to. Without a proper burial, it was understood that the body of the deceased would be doomed to wander the Underworld in an eternal state of unrest. The importance of family, as stressed through religion, is exemplified when Antigone becomes distraught over the fact that King Creon has outlawed the proper burial of her older brother, ... • 11. The College Tuition Crisis College Tuition Crisis College tuition has been an increasingly intense topic of discussion over the years. The costs of higher education have been debated by many people, and it has been discussed as to whether costs are becoming too high for students to afford. College has become more and more popular, and now as many as 20 million students attend universities reported by The National Center for Education Statistics (1). The value of a college degree is immense, but college tuitionis becoming too expensive for students to afford, and furthering the problem are students lack of knowledge on how to pay and earn moneytowards their college degree. College has become a norm in today s society so much so, that the average costs of higher educationare not really discussed. A public two year in district college was $3,520 for a full time undergraduate student in 2016 2017 (Baum 68). Baum also declares that a public four year in state undergraduate tuition was $9,650; a public four year out of state college cost $24,930; a private nonprofit four year college costs $33,480; and a for profit college cost $16,000 for that same school year. (68). Across the nation, figures will vary because of the obvious geographical region differences, but also because of price discrimination. Price discrimination allows institutions to discount their prices for a lot of students (Baum 79). Institutions do this based on individual student circumstances, and it segments the market. • 12. A Call for the Continued Prohibition of Marijuana and... A Call for the Continued Prohibition of Marijuana and Other Drugs Alcohol, if consumed in high quantities, poses serious personal and public health and safety issues. In the realm of public safety, engaging in said activity significantly impairs cognitive activity, affecting one s ability to utilize proper judgment and operate machinery, among other things. Thus, operating machinery while under the influence of alcohol puts not only the operator, but also others in the vicinity of the operator, in danger of being harmed. This is a universally recognized and accepted reality. In the realm of personal safety, long term alcohol abuse severely compromises major organs and bodily function, chiefly among them the lungs and fluid operability of the blood vessels. Thus, excessive alcoholic intake can lead to eventual chronic and debilitating health problems, such as liver cancer and diabetes. This is also a universally recognized and accepted reality. It is because of the widespread acceptance of these relative hazards that alcohol, although legal, has been seemingly sequestered by American society into a niche category of vices that are appropriate when consumed responsibly, but dangerous and overtly negative when consumed otherwise. Why then, has marijuana seemed to sidestep this particular form of judgment and swung itself onto the complete opposite end of the pendulum; the end that says it is completely harmless to consume? • 13. The James Valcq s Musical Adaptation Of The Spitfire Grill Something Was Cooking at the Spitfire Grill Southern Utah University performed James Valcq s musical adaptation of The Spitfire Grill (Valcq, 2016). The production overall was slightly above average. There were aspects of the musical that worked perfectly to go along with the main seed of redemption. Ideas and concepts of relationships, redemption, and continuity were successfully and less than successfully shared through this play. I will be going over how I believe The Spitfire Grillconnected itself to the seed of redemption through what I saw and felt throughout the show. Waiting for the show to start was actually when the production started. While I sat in the house for the show to start, the smell of someone s coffee filled the room. I was momentarily distracted by trying to figure out who was the coffee culprit and how their cup of coffee could be so potent that I could still smell it with only five minutes until show time. As I gave up that hunt, I read the plays brochure and brought up a summary of the play on my phone. I quickly put two and two together: 1) The Spitfire Grill is a breakfast hub and 2) coffee is a breakfast staple. The house having an aroma of freshly brewed coffee was completely intentional and lasted all throughout the first act. I really enjoyed the sense of smell being involved with the audience because it made me feel as if I was waiting for my order to arrive. The smell of coffee is also a comfort smell to me and only made me feel comfy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The airline industry was viewed as a commodity business, but Burr saw a chance to offer a better product to customers. (PE believed that customers, rather than passengers, created a more appropriate mindset.) But taking advantage of deregulation was not the only reason Burr wanted to start the company: greater, perhaps, was his desire to build a better organization one that was both more productive and more fun than what he considered to be typical in American business. He was tired of the politics and the beat them and they ll do more management styles he had seen all his professional life. He was tired of what he called the deadening grind and lack of vision of T.I. s business style. He wanted to design a new kind of airline, one that would provide both better and cheaper service, and be an exciting and rewarding place to work. The focus of the company would be on people: hence its name, People Express. From its inception, therefore, PE was seen as a chance by Burr and his management team to experiment with and demonstrate a better way of managing not just an airline, but any business. While Burr recognized his stance was contrary to the majority of organizations in the United States, he rejected any insinuation that he was optimistic or soft. • 15. Sexual Orientation, By Sarah Waters Throughout human history, various minority groups find themselves the targets of prejudice, discrimination, and even violent acts of hatred. One of the most notable ways in which the struggles of these groups are documented and exemplified is through literature. Sexual orientation, and more specifically homosexuality, is a prominent point of controversy within the world of fiction writing, as well as through the nonfictional history of various societies. Sarah Waters Affinityis a prime example of how history and fiction can intertwine. Waters wrote this novel in the 1990 s, but set it in London during the Victorian Era. In order to create a realistic narrative, Waters had to ensure that it was historically accurate, even down to the societal impact of Margaret s sexual preferences. Though it was not overtly discussed, the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries marked the era in which ...homosexuality in its modern form truly began to emerge (Willett 351). Probable size of study should be considered, which is required to reach the study aims at the design phase. The figuring of a fitting sample size depends on a subjective decision of certain elements and occasionally crude approximate of others, and could as an outcome appear rather artificial (Whitley and Ball, 2002). Thus, there are foremost three key factors which should be taken into account in computation of a proper sample size(power and effect). The pro of utilizing a sample is that it is more commonsense and less expensive than gathering data from the populace. The peril of choosing a sample is that it is may not test may not enough mirror the practices, qualities, side effects, or convictions of the populace sufficiently mirror of population symptoms or beliefs (Polit and Hungler, 1999). Pain And Nociception Research Paper Introduction Pain is an adaptive mechanism which helps us learn to avoid dangers, it used to be believed that pain was an emotional state caused by intense stimuli and for 300 years people operated on Descartes single wire theory, that pain is a disturbance passed along nerve fibres to the brain, however, recent research into pain has come up with a more complex theory of nociception and pain. Nociception is a sensory process that provides the signals that trigger pain, whereas pain is the feeling of something unpleasant or an unbearable sensation arising from a part of the body. it is possible to have pain without nociception and nociception without pain, for example, back pain with no tissue damage is pain with no nociception and finding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first stage of nociception is transduction, this is the perception of a noxious (damaging) stimulus, which activates high threshold nociceptors through multiple mechanisms, such as, thermal (heat), mechanical (ligaments being stretched) and chemical. With chemical activation, infection creates inflammation around the wound to promote healing, some chemicals produced trigger nociceptors (sometimes constantly) and some lower threshold of activation for other nociceptors (Basbaument et al 2009) meaning a person can often feel more pain. The second stage of nociception is transmission; this is where the information detected is sent to brain by specialised nerve pathways. AОґ fibres are fast and specific, due to them being myelinated and unimodal (they respond to a specific type of pain per fibre) and C fibres conduct slow sensation as they are unmyelinated and polymodal (responding to multiple types of pain per fibre). The final stage of nociception is interpretation, this is where the brain processes painful stimuli and decides if it should be acted on (if there is a danger). It is only at this point that pain can be felt. Nociceptors do not send a pain signal but instead alert the brain to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Character Of Romeo Montague in William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet Romeo is one of the main characters in Shakespeare s play Romeo and Juliet and is portrayed as a tragic figure, who is guided by his destiny. Shakespeare initially introduces Romeo to be a romantic sentimentalist, who is over obsessed with his own emotions. Romeo, however, loses these personality traits towards the end of the play, and becomes more mature after falling deeply in love with Juliet. His love for her is strong and over whelming, and Shakespeare vividly represents this by dramatic visual moments throughout the play, culminating in the tragic climax of Romeo s suicide, to join with his Juliet in death.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is one of the many themes that Shakespeare provides to suggest foreboding early on in the play. The omen is ambiguous as it firstly implies Romeo is worrying about something that will not happen and is generally nervous about arriving uninvited. However, it could imply that in going to the Ball, he will meet Juliet, which will cause drastic events to happen, and eventually lead to both their deaths. This is one of the main themes during the play and is successfully entwined in Romeo s script to introduce foreboding to the audience without the character realising it. He disregards the omen, and continues with his friends to the Ball. On arrival, he seeks Rosaline, but his attentions rapidly divert to Juliet Capulet, She seems to hang upon the cheek of night displays Romeo s persona to be fickle and to have a fluctuating nature. He had before thought Rosaline to be beautiful, but now he sees Juliet as the most beautiful woman in the world. This is one of the more romantic traits of Romeo, and Shakespeare uses many metaphors and similes in Romeo s speech and successfully interlaces them to represent the poetic and child like wonder that Romeo experiences when he sets eyes on Juliet. For the purpose of this assignment I have chosen to reflect the care given to a middle aged gentlemen in a hospice setting. • 27. How Does Sam Mendes Use Camera Angles In American Beauty American Beauty Respond critically to significant aspects of visual and/or text(s) through close reading, supported by evidence. Sam Mendes is an intelligent and sophisticated director who has created many award winning films during his career. Some characteristics of his directorial style are; camera work with the specific use of close up s and the zooming effect, lighting/colour to symbolise characters/items and use sound to create tension and anticipation in the audience. I have chosen Mendes s 1999 masterpiece American Beauty to study and analyse. This film has scenes that incorporate all of Mendes s described characteristics and that help to give me a clear understanding of Mendes s directional style. Mendes uses the same camera work in both of the dining room scenes in American Beauty to create tension with the audience and to emphasise characters expressions and emotions to the viewers, leaving us in no doubt what each character is feeling. This allows the audience to understand each character more effectively and as a result, it challenges us to think about how we might feel in the same situation. A scene, in American Beauty, that Mendes uses effective camera work to enhance the audiences view of the characters is the dining room scene that features Lester, his wife Caroline and his daughter Jane. When the scene starts, Mendes uses a background music that sounds just like elevator music; Beli high: musical Pacific, with close up shots of pictures when Jane was younger and a vase full of red roses. However, as the scene continues Mendes uses a wide shot to show the entire dining room, this frame was then gradual zooming in up until the frame stopped in a position where you could see a mid shot of each character sitting at the table. When the conversation had started from Lester the audience could see how disengaged his wife and daughter were. They weren t interested in how his day went, they only cared about themselves. When the close ups are on Lester, the audience gets a vivid picture of a man who has lost his true self and who is already dead inside . Whereas when the close ups are on Jane or Caroline, you see someone who is pained from the discomfort of certain people around them Jane or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The importance of engineering materials can be noted from the fact that historical ages have been named after materials. Materials Science forms the basic foundation for engineers in product development because the structures, components, and devices that design are limited by the properties of the materials. In the customer driven competitive business environment, the product quality is of paramount importance [1]. The product or end application quality has been found to be influenced by the engineering design, type of materials selected and the processing technology employed. Therefore, the importance of engineering materials and their process techniques are art of today s engineering world. There are wide categories of materials available which have shown their potential in various engineering applications ranging from aerospace to household. The materials are usually selected by considering their properties, specific application areas, advantages and limitations. The challenge for designers is to select an optimal material suitable for the specific design requirements. The complex design need in modern science generally lead to development of newer materials to meet the specific operating conditions and regimes [1]. Opponents of the homeschooling method argue that parents are not as qualified to educate their children as teachers are; therefore, their children will not measure up to the academic level of traditionally schooled children. (Jeub) Homeschooling disproves all the arguments above. Jeub affirms that parents are not their child s main educator, but their child learns independently because of his desire to learn. No matter how qualified parents are, homeschooled children have proven to excel academically. Also, homeschooling allows children to learn at their own pace. Every curriculum is designed for a specific child. Individualized learning allows all children s needs to be met. Homeschooling gives freedom to learn at their own level unlike public schools, where every child must learn a set curriculum in order to keep up with the class. In response to the argument that homeschooled children spend too much time with their parents, they actually have positive relationships with their parents and other adults in the community. Instead of looking at adults as disciplinarians, many view adults as their mentors as their jobs, other home school parents, or family friends. Modernism is a style of writing that became popular in the early 1900 s. This style was developed in the period of WWI, a time of many important social changes. A Streetcar Named Desire and A Long Day s Journey Into Night are two plays that exemplify the style of modernism. Journey is a modernist novel with a tragic storyline about the Tyrone family. • 37. Discuss Smith s Ideas On The Division Of Labour Explain and Evaluate Smith s Ideas on the Division of Labour: A core part of dominant ideology is the split between state and market is this valid? Is this true? One of Adam Smith s main focuses was the problem of the relationship between money and the state. Adam Smith can be seen as pioneering in questioning the role of the state, as he was seemingly the first to propose a systematic model of the economy that was independent of the state. He attempts to explain how society should organise economics from the perspective of what is naturally occurring. In doing this he finds that what should be and what can be are profoundly interlinked. This revolutionary thinking went against mercantilism, which was the dominant approach of the time period. Mercantilism can be understood as an economic model that was characterized by government intervention. Mercantilism was an alliance between merchants and the state that was premised on increasing the power and wealth of the state through growing certain sections of the economy. It was formed by the concerns of the time, such as a need to maintain new and expensive militaries, the rise of the nation state, and crises and shortages of money. Adam Smith s wrote The Wealth of Nations (1776) primarily as an attack on the economic mercantilist system of the day. Smith aimed to demolish the mercantilist beliefs that money was an end, and that the accumulation of wealth could be identified with the accumulation of money, and to understand ... • 39. Summary Of Magical Realism In A Very Old Man With Enormous... The phrase magical realism in the context of literature was first coined by the Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier to describe the combination of the fantastic and everyday occurrences in Latin American fiction. Over time, the term has been vastly modified by writers from a plethora of backgrounds. Nevertheless, magical realism still refers to the tendency to mix the magical and terrestrial in a context of realistic narration, as seen in the works of Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez. Born in Columbia, Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez introduces readers to magical realism through one of his short stories A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by combining earthly and fantastic elements to create an image of an ordinary society with mythical creatures. In his work, Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez effectively illustrates the coexistence of cruelty and moralityin society through the strategic utilization of magical realism. Traditionally, many myths and legends portray angels as elegant, beautiful creatures, but in MГЎrquez s short storythe angel is portrayed as a disease infected ragpicker (MГЎrquez 1). The story begins when Pelayo and Elisenda, MГЎrquez s main characters, discover an old man lying in their courtyard. They are unsure of his origins, but know that he has enormous wings and speak in an incomprehensible dialect (MГЎrquez 1). Despite these uncertainties, they decide to house the questionable man in their chicken coop and utilize him to their own interests when they discover that he is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Discrimination is defined as the act of perceiving and making evident the distinctions between two different groups of people. There have been many groups that have been very discriminating, but the one that sticks out like a diamond in coal is the Ku Klux Klan. The widespread fear allowed the KKK to gain political power even though they were veering away from their main idea of restricting the south from reconstruction. By doing many of these activities the KKK very effectively managed to keep blacks away from the voting booths. Many Klansmen were elected into office because the black community could not vote. Even though the white supremacists were in office, they did not do as much as they would have hoped. Officials did not accomplish the idea of minimizing black power and increasing white supremacy. • 46. The Importance Of Respect In Society Today We use it every day. Your parents tell you about it all the time. Most don t know exactly what it means. Respect. To have respect is to hold oneself worthy of your admiration or approval. Society cannot function without respect because it is the oil that keeps the gears turning. Respect is actively listening, obeying orders, and being mindful, whether it s to others, the environment, the law, or yourself. In today s society, respect is decreasing. In schools, in the workplace, at home, and in public with racism, sexism, religious intolerance, and more. Racism and police brutality have increased since cases like of Trayvon Martin and Freddie Gray. Peopleof color have not received the respect they deserve and respect for policemen is decreasing. Sexism has increased since third wave feminists surfaced and skewed people s image and respect for feminists. Religious intolerance increases as terrorist attacks continue with people s misconceptions about Islam. An example of a group lacking respect in society today is the youth. The youth isn t anywhere near as respectful to their parents, teachers, or elders as they were before the nineteen hundreds. But to make the youth more respectful, one must respect the youth.
