Teddy Boys Research Paper
During post war Europe, in Britain one of the first youth subculture the Teddy Boys and the forgotten
Teddy Girls emerged around the 1950s. This subculture soon spread throughout the United Kingdom
and became largely associated with the American Rock n Roll genre of music. As the subculture began
to spread, they began to be seen as a rebellious British youth subculture. By then the Teddy Girls by
were overshadowed by the Teddy Boys since there were more of the boys than the girls. Not only that,
they were deemed boring by the media because their role at the time were still focused at home. The
name Teddy Boys derived from their style of fashion that attracted youths from their generation. Their
Edwardian style of clothing came from the high class in the 1940s which could be ... Show more

But soon the media started to portray the Teddy Boys as misfits to society as they began to become
involved in petty crimes. These crimes became so severe that workers started to hire ex boxers, ex
soldiers, and even professional wrestlers to maintain order (Lowenstein 74). The Teddy Boys quickly
earned a reputation for street fighting, low level crime activity, and attacks on British s growing West
Indian community (McKay et al. 898). It was their same attacks on the West Indian community that
lead to their decline and a rise in another subculture. Even though the Teddy Boys weren t shown in a
positive light, this youth subculture became a breakthrough for other subcultures to emerge. Both the
Teddy Boys and Teddy Girls set up fashionable trends for both male and female to follow, even
though the males dominated this subculture. With it, they also set an example of what to expect as
other subcultures would emerge taking after the Teddy Boys. Even still to this day, some subcultures
in history can be compared to the Teddy Boys subculture and share something in common with

The Religious Symbolism and Architecture of Angkor Wat and...
Introduction
Built by the Khmers between 802 and 1220 AD, the ancient temples of Angkor Wat exist as the
remaining relics of a historically and religiously rich city. While many other historical and religious
structures in Cambodia have disappeared due in part from being constructed out of vulnerable
materials like wood, Angkor Wat still remains as a symbol of the divinity of its former kings, as well
as for the palace itself. Likewise, Indonesia s Borodubur temples exist as the single remaining
structures of the city. The temples of Angkor Wat and Borodubur hold several similarities within
architecture and symbolism, both being heavily based on religious belief. However, different features
within both structures, architecturally and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Decorative elements through out the towers and galleries present their own characteristics and fulfill
specific needs within the temple. The towers are formed into the shape of the ever popular lotus buds,
and the galleries are used to expand the many passageways of the temple. Also, the axial galleries
within the temple are used to connect several enclosures. Characteristic decorative components of
Angkor Wat include narrative and historical bas reliefs, pediments, and devatas. The bas reliefs
located in the gallery of Angkor Wat holds a special signification for Angkor Wat. The gallery displays
heaven and the underworld in which garudas and lions are holding the celestial palaces. These gerudas
indicate that the palaces were floating in heaven, comparing Angkor Wat to the palaces of the Gods.
This display furthers the idea that Angkor Wat acts as a liason between the world of Heaven and Earth.
Because the palace physically remains on earth but spiritually resides within heaven, the palace acts as
communal place for believers to gather.
The bas reliefs and pictures did not only serve to decorate the palaces, or depict stories of the past.
They hold the important task of transforming the palace into a celestial dwelling or heavenly place.
Further evidence to support this notion is

A Philosophical View Of Animal Rights
A Philosophical View of Animal Rights
Should animals be harmed to benefit mankind? This pressing question has been around for at least the
past two centuries. During the early nineteenth century, animal experiments emerged as an important
method of science and, in fact, marked the birth of experimental physiology and neuroscience as we
currently know it. There were, however, guidelines that existed even back then which restricted the
conditions of experimentation. These early rules protected the animals, in the sense that all procedures
performed were done so with as little pain as possible and solely to investigate new truths. Adopting
the animals? perspectives, they would probably not agree that these types of regulations were much ...

(Rodd 4). So, it is easily seen how many views have accumulated over time. The task of determining
animal rights has also come into the context of examining these inherent differences on qualitative and
quantitative levels. We can say, for instance, that on a qualitative level, a cow is less intelligent than a
human. But, we must then determine, on a quantitative level, how much more unintelligent that cow
really is when compared to humans. And, once we decide that, we must then decide if that margin of
intelligence is enough for us humans to slaughter that cow in order to benefit human kind from its
products.
Questions like this and others, which are very similar, have become the snowballing debate over the
question of animal rights. Where do we draw the line? How do we determine the value of another
being?s life? Well, up to this point, we as a society have been pretty confident in judging the lives of
millions of animals worldwide (or so we can conclude by looking at the number of animals sacrificed
each year for the purpose of experiment, education, goods, etc.). We must first step back and analyze
the ethical dilemma at hand and then proceed to carefully weigh its consequences.
If we examine the question of animal rights cautiously, it is most often viewed as an ethical dilemma
as opposed to an economic or

The Character of Hedda Gabler in Ibsen s Hedda Gabler Essay
The Character of Hedda Gabler
Hedda Gabler is perhaps one of the most interesting characters in Ibsen. She has been the object of
psychological analysis since her creation. She is an interesting case indeed, for to explain Hedda one
must rely on the hints Ibsen gives us from her past and the lines of dialogue that reveal the type of
person she is. The reader never views Hedda directly. We never get a soliloquy in which she bares her
heart and motives to the audience. Hedda is as indifferent to our analysis as she is to Tesman s
excitement over his slippers when she says I really don t care about it (Ibsen 8). But a good
psychologist knows that even this indifference is telling. Underneath the ennui and indifference ...

Hedda is the product of aristocratic birth. She is, as I mentioned earlier, the daughter of General
Gabler, whose portrait hangs over this play not unlike the portrait of the absent father in Williams The
Glass Menagerie. And in case we have missed the significance of the portrait in the stage directions or
have overlooked it as an audience member, Miss Tesman rivets our attention to it and the reality of
Hedda s aristocratic life: Well, you cant s wonder at that General Gabler s daughter! Think of the sort
of life she was accustomed to in her father s time. Don t you remember how we used to see her riding
down the road along with the General? In that long black habit with feathers in her hat? (Ibsen 2). Her
aristocratic birth and her past is contrasted by her choice of a husband who has neither noble blood nor
bourgeois money. We are told that this motherless child of an aristocratic general often gave in to fits
of cruelty as a child: At the finishing school the presence of a girl with a head of abundant, wavy
flaxen hair irritated her and provoked her to outbursts of cruelty which had their source in equal
measure, perhaps, in envy and in a deep seated temperamental antipathy; for dearth of abundance,
physically and temperamentally, is a characteristic of Hedda s nature (Weigland 246 247).

Timpani In Haydn s Music Essay
Timpani in Haydn s Music Franz Joseph Haydn, born March 31, 1732, is one of the most influential
classical composers. Being known as the Father of Symphony, is an important reason to look at his
work. Focusing closely on his use of timpani in two of his major pieces, Symphony 103 and Missa in
tempore belli, can give us an in depth look on his development with the use of timpani. By first
starting at looking at his lifetime, then delving into both pieces, next comparing and contrasting the
two pieces, and finally, briefly going over other pieces influenced by the use of timpani will give us a
better understanding. Franz Joseph Haydn, better known as Joseph Haydn, was born in Austria in
1732. When Haydn was eight years old, he became a choirboy in Vienna. After his voice had matured,
he became a teenage freelance musician. After some time had passed, a noble family in Vienna, the
Esterházy s, hired him to composed for them. From 1761 until about 1790 he worked for the
Esterházy family composing instrumental works and opera s for their summer palace performances.
When Haydn had finished working for the Esterházy family, he was well known throughout Europe
and considered by some as the greatest living composer at that time. Haydn s Symphony 103, also
known as the Drumroll Symphony, is his second to last ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

war sentiment since in 1796 the Austrian government has issued a decree that no Austrian should

Pros And Cons Of A Cocktail Before 21
A Cocktail Before 21? In America a minor is determined as an adult when they reach the age of
eighteen. At the age of eighteen, one has many decisions to make. One decision they can make is to
choose whether or not to break the law about the legal drinking age. In many countries at the age of
eighteen, one may legally drink alcohol unlike in America the legal age to drink alcohol is twenty one.
In Keeping Legal Drinking Age At 21 Saves 900 Lives Yearly: Study, Bahar Gholipour opposes
lowering the drinking age. Studies conducted since 2006 provided evidence for researchers to
conclude that laws maintaining the legal drinking age at twenty one, has lowered the rates of drunk
driving deaths. Gholipour provides the statistic of ... the number of fatally injured drunk drivers
decreased by 57 percent among those ages of sixteen to twenty.... Researchers have also sustained
evidence that shows the current drinking age has not lead to an increase of binge drinking within the
teen population. Gholipour quotes, William Dejong, study researcher: The evidence is clear that there
would be consequences if we lowered the legal drinking age. Having a higher drinking age has lead to
mainly positive effects, such as, less alcohol consumption by youths and less alcohol related traffic
crashes. According to Gholipour Keeping the legal drinking age at twenty one saves 900 lives yearly.

5 Major Compounds That Make Up the Human Body
The Five Major Compounds That Make Up the Human Body
The human body is one of the most complex and fascinating things on this planet. There are five
major groups of compounds that compose the human body. These are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins,
nucleotides, and water. These compounds are all very important to humans and without them humans
would not be able to survive. Compounds have many functions that encourage a human cell and a
human body to function.
Compounds are pure substances made up of atoms of two or more elements chemically combined
together in fixed ratios determined by mass. When a compound is formed from its components, a
chemical change takes place through chemical reactions. Elements form compounds to ... Show more

The lipid molecules are most well known as forming basic structures of cell membranes and as energy
storage molecules as well. There are various types of lipids, three main types include: true fats
(triglycerides), phospholipids, and steroids.
Lipids are also described as fatty acids. Fatty acids are merely carboxylic acids with long hydrocarbon
chains. The fatty acid structure is one of the most fundamental categories of biological lipids, and is
commonly used as a building block of more structurally complex lipids. Fats that include these
molecules are unsaturated fats. Other fatty acids have no double bonds. Fats that include these fatty
acids are saturated fats. In most human health situations, the consumption of unsaturated fats is
preferred to the consumption of saturated fats. Like carbohydrates, lipids can also be categorized into
simple and complex.
Simple lipids are defined as those that are on hydrolysis yield at most two types of primary product
per mole; complex lipids yield three or more primary hydrolysis products per mole. Hydrolysis is a
chemical process in which a certain molecule is split into two parts by the addition of a molecule of
water . Alternatively, the terms neutral and polar lipids respectively are used to define these groups,
but are less exact. The complex lipids for many purposes are best considered in terms of either the
glycerophospholipids which contains a

Cynthia Barnett Water Work
Among all of the resources in the world, there is one that we do not often consider to be diminishing.
The masses take this resource, water, for granted. When the average person takes a single look at a
world map, they see multiple blue oceans covering the Earth. But, although we are surrounded by
water, our clean water reserves dwindle rapidly. In her article, Water Works , Cynthia Barnett attempts
to bring this issue to greater light and offers her own solutions. While I agree with many of Barnett s
points, she fails to look at the arguments of her detractors to the detriment of her already flawed case.
Throughout the article, Barnett analyses the idea of water scarcity. She accentuates the fact that aging
infrastructure hampers our ability ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her argument is focused on the Pacific Northwest, our rainy marine paradise. She speaks to a specific
population, citing the cultural significance of the salmon in this area (Barnett 2013). Unfortunately for
her message, this ignores the ranging climates and situations around the world, where her solutions
may not be as effective. While this may be persuasive towards the generally liberal population in the
region that likely already agrees with her, it offers little for people who live in drier regions. Even
within the United States, I have my doubts that Barnett s suggestions would work. For example, desert
regions in California and plains in the Midwest would not benefit from these ideas. The article s
biggest failing, however, is the view of the rest of the world. As Dr. Pierre Mukheibir, a civil engineer
with over 20 years experience in the water sector, points out in his article that about 1.2 billion people
live without access to clean drinking water. These people do not live in the Pacific Northwest, they
mostly live in developing countries in Africa (Mukheibir 1028). I think our resources and knowledge
would be better spent focusing on the lives of those suffering from the deprivation of human rights
instead of pinpointing specific areas and peoples in the United

Murray Bowen Family Systems Theory
Introduction Murray Bowen s Family Systems Theory plays a key role in the field of child life. Bowen
viewed families as an emotional system, where each member is intensely connected to the other
members. In order to analyses families and human behavior, Bowen used a set of concepts. These
concepts became part of his family systems theory that we use today. Bowens family systems theory is
made up of a total of eight concepts. These concepts include Triangles, Differentiation of self, Nuclear
Family Emotional Process, Family Projection Process, Multigenerational Transmission Process,
Emotional Cutoff, Sibling Position, and Societal Emotional Process. Using these eight concepts,
Bowen was able to examine families and how they interact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Some of these goals include Facilitating awareness of how emotional systems function (Brown, 1990).
This is important because it helps clients, families, and children learn about emotional systems work
and function. In addition, another goal is to increase the level of differentiation, the ability to be in
emotional contact with others yet still autonomous in one s own emotional functioning is the essence
of the concept of differentiation (Kerr Bowen. 1988). In other words, being an emotional support
system for family members, but remaining distant with one s own emotions.
As mentioned above, Bowens family system theory is made up of 8 concepts, these concepts are (1)
Emotional Fusion, (2) Differentiation of self, (3) Triangles, (4) Nuclear family emotional system, (5)
Family projection process, (6) Emotional cutoff, (7) Multi generation transmission process, and (8)
Sibling possession. The first concept that helps make up Bowen s family systems theory is Emotional
fusion or lack of differentiation. Emotional fusion is where individual choices are set aside in the
service of achieving harmony within the system (Brown, 1990). According to Brown, Emotional
Fusion can occur in one of two ways, the first can be when an individual feels 100 percent responsible
for others emotions and actions, and the other being a total emotional cutoff from the tension or
feelings within a

Why Spartans Are The Best Warrior
Why Spartans Are The Best Warrior s
If a war was to take place, and the Spartans are the enemy warriors, you better pray to god you live to
breathe another day. There are many reasons behind the fact that Spartans are the deadliest warriors of
all time. Could it be that they begin training to become a warrior at the age of 7? Or could it be how
they were starved and only could get food by being a successful warrior. Spartans can be recognized
as cruel warriors that cared for no one, when actually they had to be blood thirsty otherwise they
would not survive themselves. Throughout this essay I will claim the hardships a Spartan had to go
through to become such well known warriors in history. (Thesis?)

was not the case with the Spartans. While training Spartans were hazed and beat by instructors only to
make them stronger as an individual. Moments occurred during training where young children would
fight another child to death in order to eliminate the weak. When instructors saw this they would only
sit and watch, looking for either a leader or a dominant individual. Unlike today Spartans already
knew what their future held. That was to be a Spartan for life until you were dead. Many young men
would attempt escaping Rome in hope to live a free life. Those who were caught escaping were hung
on the first of every month. There was no such thing as women for Spartan s. Spartan men were not
allowed to be married or live with a women until they turned thirty. This is why many of the Spartans
were gay and had male lovers. It was forbidden though, and anyone who was caught with the same
sex was ridiculed and made fun of. The only reason marriage was acceptable to the Spartans was to
breed new soldiers. in fact husbands who could not have children were not allowed to marry and were

How Did The Ironworks Affect The Economy
The perspective of many historians and textbooks usually consist of the same general understanding of
specific issues in American history. For example, key events or battles such as _____, or common
trends that aid in the understanding of how society operated at that point in history. However, many
American history textbooks avoid the topic of widespread manufacturing industries in the south, and
their simultaneous development with the much more powerful agricultural industry. Set in the Deep
South, the state of Alabama cultured an ever growing ironworks industry that manufactured items
spanning from farming tools to railroad tracks. In addition, Georgia, which is still famed for their
agricultural industry though their famous peaches, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Already, it can be deduced that having a local ironworks would have a positive effect on the local
economy, as it would be significantly cheaper to purchase tools that had much lower shipping costs
because of where they were manufactured.
In addition, this ironworks was one the earliest, and inspired others to start ironworks. For example,
the Alabama ironworks received information published about them in the Franklin County
Tuscumbian in 1824 . The article described the ironworks as being having a forge, furnace, and saw
and grist mills. This means that the forge supplied their own fuel, purified iron ore, and wrought the
iron into tools for farms. Despite many ironworks not still being here today due to the civil war, it is
understood that there were many ironworks in Alabama that aided in the southern economy through
both aiding plantations and though the eventual exports.
Another significant ironworks in Alabama was the Shelby Ironworks. Although most of the ironworks
development was during the civil war, it consisted of major developments during the antebellum
period leading into the civil war. One of the significant advantages to this forgery was that there was a
very large deposit of iron ore near the furnace, giving the ironworks a great advantage when it came to
quality and quantity of their products. Like the Tannehill ironworks, the Shelby ironworks also sold
tools to local farm in Alabama. However, they also sold raw

The Pros And Cons Of Cognitive Therapy
Theory
The definition of cognitive relates to the activity that goes on within the mind, such as thoughts,
perception, and memory (Cognitive, n.d.), and behavior is understood as the manner that a person
handles their acts (Behavior, n.d.). Cognitive therapy (CT) focuses on how the processes that happen
within the mind and connects them with the physical symptoms that occur, and help to prove the role
that thoughts play in behavior. (Kingdon Dimech, 2008) The focus of behavioral therapy is to exclude
unwanted behaviors and strengthen and reinforce beneficial behaviors (Cherry, 2017). So, when the
two are combined together, the two are looking at how a person s mindset can shape the way that they
act, which is what cognitive behavioral therapy is about. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) began in
the 1960s through Dr. Aaron T. Beck, and is now the most common studied form of psychotherapy
(Hoffman, Asnaani, Vonk, Sawyer, Fang, 2012). This form of therapy has also been proven that when
handling any disorder that can experience an episode that through this therapy it can help prevent
another episode from reoccurring (Hoffman, Asnaani, Vonk, Sawyer, Fang, 2012). Through this
process, it will allow the patient to see that they are in charge of their behaviors and thoughts. It also
allows them to realize when there is a chance of a relapse occurring, so that way they know how to
help prevent themselves from not having control of their thoughts and behaviors.

Compare And Contrast Middle Colony And New England Colonies
Upon the settlement of Jamestown in the 17th century the British Colonies of the East Coast were
divided into three distinct areas; New England, the Middle Colony, and the Southern Colony. While
the three regions had comparable similarities, their differences were more noted. When the first
colonies were founded, it was due to pilgrims wanting religious freedom, and countries striving for
move power, riches, and a name. The southernmost colonies were founded when wealthy leaders
expanded looking for land ownership and more power.
While all the colonies were ran by a democratic government, each individual region had a different
spin on it. The Middle Colony separated the church from the government laws, while New England
believed the Church should have supreme ruling in all things government related; and the Southern
Colonies were ruled by the wealthy, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Difference Between Absolute Advantage And Comparative...
1. Explain Opportunity Cost and provide an example. (5 points) Opportunity cost can be defined as a
high valued alternative that must be given up in order to achieve or obtain something else. In other
words, for anything you decide to spend your time doing results in sacrificing the opportunity to
engage in doing something else. The value of the sacrificed alternative can only be determined by the
individual that is choosing to sacrifice it. There are numerous examples of opportunity cost
surrounding us throughout every day. Personally, I face opportunity cost scenarios constantly, both at
my job and at home. The opportunity cost of me being in college is the time I would have spent doing
a number of other things I enjoy, such as spending time with friends and family. However, obtaining
an education and pursuing my goals is extremely important to me, therefore, I must sacrifice other
high valued alternatives that I greatly enjoy. 2. What is the difference between absolute advantage and
comparative advantage? What is the benefit of trade? (5 Points) Comparative advantage occurs when
an individual or firm has the ability to produce a good or service at a lesser opportunity cost than that
of other entities. Absolute advantage occurs when an individual or firm has the ability to produce a
good or service more efficiently and at a lower cost per unit. In other words, an individual or firm that

Diets In The Middle Ages
The food in the Middle Ages (1000 1500) differed between upper class diets and lower class diets.
There was not a variety of food choices available for Middle Age people. The food they ate depended
on where they lived, what they lived by, and whether they were rich or poor. In some ways the middle
ages diet was the same but in other ways it was very different to our diets.
In the Middle Ages there were certain foods more commonly eaten than others. The staple foods for
everyone (upper class and lower class) included breads and root vegetables such as parsnips, carrots,
yams, and onions. Figure 1 shows bakers making bread which was one of the major foods of the
Middle ages. Almonds were a common nut used as thickeners in soups, stews, sauce and of course
were used in almond milk. For people living on the coast, the main foods consisted of fish caught
from the nearby sea. The average person who lived away from the coast did not regularly eat fish
unless it was a special occasion.

Analysis Of The Poem The Painter By John Ashbery
A majority of John Asbury s poems are about the process in which the mind of a person interacts with
the external surroundings. John Asbury has often tried to describe how the human mind interacts with
the natural world. In his poem The Painter the poet has also incorporate the diverse aspect of nature
which has been seen through the minds of a painter. Through this poem, the poet has essentially tried
to reach out and understand the deeper aspects of human emotions such as life, love, loss, alienation,
creation, inspiration, reality and perspective. The fact that John Asbury is an ardent art critic, he is
deeply involved and associated with the process of artistic creation and appreciation which is more so
reflected through his poem The Painter (Frye 208).
In the poem The Painter , the poet John Ashbery describes the artistic creativity in direct conflict with
the demands of today s society. In this poem he expressed how an artist wants to paint the sea and
bring forth a relation between the sea and the buildings of the city. The painter places himself amidst
the nature and the urban concrete jungle and as he expected his work to gain creativity, his
expectations got diminished as he was unable to capture reality of life through his art. He was thus
attempting to create something impossible and remains unsuccessful (Ford 112).
Ashbery considered this desire to be very simple as he compared his ambition to children s prayer. His
contrasts to the painter s expectation

Vygotsky s Social Developement Theory
Vygotsky s Social Developement theory focused on the connections between people and the social and
cultural context, in which they act and interact with others. According to Vygotsky, humans use tools
that develop from a culture, such as speech and writing, to mediate their social environments.
Intinitally children develop these tools to serve solely to communcate needs. Vygotsky believed that
the internatlization of these tools led to higher thinking skills. Bandura believed in reciprocal
determinism , that is the world and a person s behavior cause each other. However behaviorism states
that one s environment causes one s behavior, Bandura who was studying adolescent aggression,
found this to be too easy of a fix and so he suggest that behavior causes environment as well. Later,

Not that it is completey correct and the only deciding factor, but I do believe that after a certain point
in our childrens lives, culture does dictate the paths they take and their developement in many stages
along that path. Along with the different interpersonal relationships they have while walking the paths
that society/culture have laid out for them. Teachers and school curriculum along with the friendships
they develope with their peers continues throught most of a child life starting at the age of 5
continuing through highschool and how ever many years they attend college, careers and the service if
thats the path they choose to continue the cycle. I believe that what we see, hear, experience is a big
part of who we become and is a big part of how we evolve or change throughout our entire life, but
these are changes that continue after we are born and our genetic predispositions are in place and we

Bedrock River
If a river flows over bedrock, the bedrock restricts widening and lateral mobility which can distort the
shape of the bends in the river (Hooke and Yorke 2011). Substrate influences channel form at the
reach scale, with bedrock channel found to be narrower and deeper than alluvial channels (Whitbread
et al. 2015). This means that the substrate the river is flowing over does have an effect on what the
river is doing. The bedrock restricts widening and lateral mobility, which limits how fast the river can
meander. If the river is flowing over a substrate that is easily erodible, and then if it erodes down to
bedrock the river will become less sinuous.
Meandering rivers are not common in bedrock channels because bedrock channels are narrower and
deeper than alluvial channels (Whitbread et al. 2015). The alluvial channels allow the river channel to
become wide and therefore the river is able to meander because its channel is so wide. Changing the
type of bedrock can influence the width and depth of the river (Whitbread et al. 2015). The maximum
width/depth ratio decreases with increasing fracture spacing (Whitbread et al. 2015). This is because
the fractures create a weak spot in the rock that allows the river to erode into those fractures. Adding

The substrate that the river flows over has an effect on the interaction between groundwater and the
bottom of the river. If the river is flowing over an impermeable substrate e.g. shale, mudstone, any

The substrate has a major effect on the river. The substrate can determine what type of river is formed,
how much sediment the river is transporting, how much erosion is occurring in the river etc. The
substrate is a very import factor when anyone is studying a

Fragile X Syndrome Inherited
How is Fragile X Syndrome Inherited?
Genes are a huge part of DNA that are passed from generation to generation. There are many genes on
each chromosome; we have tens of thousands of genes that tell or bodies on how to develop. Genes
are given letters to identify them. The gene responsible for fragile X syndrome is called FMR1. The
FMR1 Gene is on the X chromosome. The FMR1 gene appears in four forms that are shown by the
number of repeats of a pattern of DNA called CGG repeats. Individuals with less than 45 CGG repeats
have a normal FMR1 gene. Those with 45 54 CGG repeats have what is called an intermediate or grey
zone allele, which does not cause any of the known fragile X associated disorders. Individuals with 55

age of 50. It can affect balance and memory, and cause tremors and other neurological problems. A

Compare And Contrast Frankenstein And Pride And Prejudice
Deep, gut wrenching horror and passionate, gripping love: these are what the novels Frankenstein and
Pride and Prejudice, respectively, are chiefly remembered for. The differences in their plotlines are
striking. While Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein s creation of a monster and the
havoc that the monster wreaks, Pride and Prejudice recounts the charming and colorful love story of
Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. However, despite the obvious differences in the novels subjects, the
authors of both works share a similar purpose. Both Shelley s Frankenstein and Austen s Pride and
Prejudice depict the dangerous results of hubris with the purpose of warning society to keep one s
pride in check, lest devastating consequences ensue. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both authors caution against becoming too prideful, for excessive pride can be disastrous. This
message is extremely poignant when examining the historical context of Frankenstein and Pride and
Prejudice. During the time period Frankenstein was published, science was making extraordinary
strides. The triumphs of the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution instilled a level of
confidence in scientists, and experiments became more and more ambitious. In the wake of this
exponential progress, Frankenstein serves as a reminder that pride should never remain unchecked.
Overconfidence mustn t be allowed to jeopardize one s judgment, and careful considerations must be
made as to the morality and reasonability of one s actions before taking on a task. Frankenstein
became caught up in his passion and in his pride, and thus he was unable to foresee the consequences
of his actions. Though Frankenstein is by no means a censure of scientific progress or
experimentation, it is a cautionary tale that advocates that one should always remember one s own
infallibility, and not become caught up in the quest for success and recognition. Analogously, Pride
and Prejudice can be examined through an analysis of the sociopolitical sentiment of Austen s time
period. In Austen s sphere, a desirable marriage was the ultimate goal for a young lady. However,
Elizabeth nearly jeopardizes her chance of securing just this, as her pride prevents her from merely
liking to Darcy. Though her near loss of Darcy may not immediately appear comparable to
Frankenstein s loss of his friends and family, the particular emphasis placed on marriage as a means of
social mobility in Austen s Regency England would render the potential loss of a favorable marriage a
most devastating outcome. Thus, Elizabeth s ability to finally abandon her pride and secure this match
is particularly poignant. She finally achieves the

If you want a full body workout, running is one of the simplest and easiest ways to get yourself fit.

Running is a well loved workout of several people. In fact, in the United States alone, there are about
65 million people who went running or jogging in 2016. Running is generally good for your body
since it does not only help you to lose weight and tone your muscles, but it also improves your mental

When you run, your body temperature increases which help inhibit the growth of bacteria in your
body. Running also hastens the circulation of the body s protective cells throughout the body enabling
your immune system to fend off viruses and bacteria.
Boosts your confidence and relieves stress. If you finished running longer miles and crossed the finish
line, it gives you a sense of achievement. Successfully achieving your goals boosts your confidence
and it inspires you to do more. Your body also releases a chemical called endorphin when you
exercise. Endorphins are your body s feel good chemicals hence relieving you of stress.
Helps build your endurance and strength. Running marathons requires a lot of preparation and
training. Compared to those who are only training for running short miles, long distance runners
undergo a more rigorous running program that enables them to build their endurance and strengthen
their muscles to last a 26 mile run.
Lets you meet new friends. Running seems to be a solo activity since you only depend on yourself
when reaching for the finish line. However, running marathons also lets you connect with other people
and be more social. There are several marathon clubs and organizations that you can join if you want

I had a recurring role on Remedy, so I m not sure if that counts, but the episode of Remedy where my

In 2007 the company entered an open beta phase using flash. Three years later Wix had three million
users (April 2010), a year later (March 2011) they had over eight million users and its total funding
had hit sixty one million dollars. Exactly a year later (March 2012), Wix had replaced the current use
of flash to a new HTML5 site builder. Websites created before this implementation still worked using
flash, but all new sites were created using the new HTML5 builder. This change proved to be
incredibly successful, showing an overall usage of more than twenty five million users as well as
generating more than sixty million dollars in 2012. By August 2014, more than fifty one million users
throughout 190 countries have used Wix with roughly 45,000 new users a day.
Scholars Analysis
Flash websites have always been popular with artists because they display images beautifully.
Unfortunately, Apple s mobile devices and Adobe s Android do not support a Flash Player needed to
show images in Flash (Arthur, 2011). In the future, the focus will be in HTML5 as mobile world shifts
towards non proprietary open standards (Arthur, 2011).

Comparing Serial Garden And The Third Wish
The Serial Garden and The Third Wish by Joan Aiken both meet our expectations of a fairy tale and
breaks them in order to teach a lesson. In both fairy tales the author surprises you with new changes

Alison Bechdel s Fun Home
A Missed Connection
Much of Alison Bechdel s graphic memoir Fun Home is focused on the relationship between Alison
and her father. Due to this, the relationship between Alison and her mother is often pushed to the
sidelines. Although it may seem that their relationship doesn t play a main role simply because of the
focus of the story, it becomes increasingly obvious as the novel goes on that Alison and her mother
don t have much in the way of a relationship or connection. While at the forefront Alison explores the
many similarities and differences between her and her father, she also more subtlety looks at the vast
differences between her and her mother and the one similarity they did have: a passion for the arts.

this play on Alison s desk shows Alison s attempt to reach out to her mother and relate to her. The
copy of the play being located near all of Alison s art supplies draws focus to the relationship between
the two art forms of theatre and visual art and the fact that there is something in common there, just

her earnest diary entries had given way to the implicit lie of the blank page (Bechdel 186), and the use

Citizen Kane And The Social Network Analysis
Orson Welles Citizen Kane (1941), is remembered as one of the greatest American films to be made.
Its revolutionary storyline and the new ideas that Welles introduces in the film sets it apart from others
created at the time. The film depicts a young man, Charles Kane (Orson Welles), who grew up
wealthy and who eventually owns a newspaper. Throughout the movie, as he gains wealth and power,
he exhibits a distinct weakness that eventually leads to his downfall. While David Fincher s The
Social Network (2010) isn t as famous as Citizen Kane, it represents the same idea. In this film a
young man, Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) innovates a website that over the course of the movie
gains popularity and support, this leads him to gain wealth and influence. Zuckerberg s ignorance and
ill mannered behavior have a significant impact on his downfall. Both of these movies portray the
theme, pride goeth before a fall, and throughout the development of the theme of these particular
films, both protagonists end up hurting numerous people because of their pride. Both these films
represent and portray the theme in a similar fashion, although they also exhibit differences. The theme
in Citizen Kane is represented as dramatic and grand. Whereas in The Social Network the theme is
more subtle and modest. The cinematography of these films also contributes to the portrayal of the
theme. Orson Welles, the director, and cinematographer of Citizen Kane. uses many extreme angels,

These sentiments are supported by Jung and Hartog, (2007) who suggest that, one way for
organizations to become more innovative is to capitalize on their employees ability to innovate. Jung
and Hartog, continue to argue that employees can help to improve business performance through their
ability to generate ideas and use these as building blocks for new and better products, services and

These sentiments are echoed by Kreitner and Kinicki (2006) who pose that a good reward system
should attract talented people and motivate and satisfy them once they have joined the organization.
Leadership has existed for as long as people have interacted, and it is present in all cultures no matter
what their economic or social makeup. Leadership is not only a human quality; it is found in primitive
forms in many animal species, from low level vertebrates such as chickens to higher level primates
such as gorillas and whales (Troittier, Wart and Wang, 2008). Leaders have a great influence in the
organizations as they fuel employee motivation by offering benefits and rewards that meet individual
needs Kreitner and Kinicki, 2006 and Yukl, 2002). Kim (2002) suggests that a leader s use of a more
participative management style will result in higher levels of satisfaction among his or her employees.
Job satisfaction is extremely important for the well being of the organization as well as the individual
(Vecchio, 2006). The significance of job satisfaction can be viewed in the context of two decisions
people make about their work. The first is the decisions to join and retain in the organization. The
second is the decision to work hard in pursuit of high levels of task performance (Schermerhorn, Hunt
and Osborn, 2000). People s degree of job satisfaction can range from extreme satisfaction to extreme
dissatisfaction. In addition to having attitudes

Social Construction Of Childhood
Childhood, in the 21st century, has become the center of attention because of the highly influential
book Centuries of Childhood published in the year 1960. In the book, Aries (1960) argued that the
concept has been created by the modern history and further indicated that children were considered as
mini adults before the 17th century. According to Dr. Montgomery (2013), the childhood in 1970s and
80s have enormously transformed in terms of their treatment and their lives. Moreover, Dr.
Montgomery revealed the contemporary and historical differences in the terms childhood. For
instance, children in the 21st century have fewer responsibilities and their lives are characterized by
school, play, consumption and family instead of paid labor, work, production and public life. This
implies that the standards of childhood differ on the basis of economic setting and traditions of the
societies. The purpose of this assignment is to describe the changes in childhood over the years, while
determining the role of difference in views and perspectives on childhood in creating different
expectations of the children.

This does not mean that the children were despised, neglected or forsaken; but what was meant here
was that the concept of childhood is based on social construction. Social construction, in simpler
words, is a theoretical perspective of exploring the negotiation of reality in everyday life, which is
done through the interaction of the people and discourses (James James, 2008). Moreover, James and
James (2008) further simplified the concept by indicating that social construction basically relates to
the idea that the change in reality is because of the interaction that people have with each other and in

Playing Piano Benefits
Studying and playing piano does provide powerfully positive effects on the brain. Anyone who learns
and or plays piano can experience these benefits. The benefits range from: improved hand eye
coordination, better Intelligence Quotient (IQ) scores (these results were on children), higher self
esteem, reduced anxiety, lower levels of stress, and less periods of depression. People who play piano
also have a lot of enthusiasm, dexterity, and reading tone. According to First Tutors and the article
titled The Neurological Benefits of Learning Music, these benefits and effects are inarguable as they
are supported by a multitude of studies. Of chief concern in many studies are the effects that playing
piano has on the brain and its development this includes the outcomes of practicing or taking piano
lessons. As a result of all this inquiry and observation, it is clear that piano positively benefits
everyone of all ages. These benefits will be discussed in greater detail followed by a conclusion
summarizing the most important impacts that playing the piano has on a person s brain.
While a person s intelligence quotient is not a measure of one s full intellectual capabilities, consider
for example that there are studies that have shown that playing piano can increase the IQ average of a
person by about seven points. This benefit is cited in an article entitled The Neurological Benefits of
Learning Music found on The First Tutors website. Despite the fact that intelligence

Personal Reflection Paper
My son, Ricky is now six years old and he has undergone many milestones and changes to be who he
is today. All throughout Ricky s life I have worked on his intelligence, morals, and social skills so he
can become a valuable member of society. In regards to Ricky s intelligence, I have worked on his
ability to read and his sleep habits which correlate with his intelligence. In regards to Ricky s morals, I
have stressed the value of honesty and treating others kindly. Lastly, Ricky is practicing sociodramatic
play and participating in recreational activities to gain social skills. When Ricky was born I vowed to
improve his intelligence. This is now increasingly important since Ricky is in school. I have been
advancing Ricky s intelligence through practicing private speech. Since kindergarten, Ricky has been
having difficulty with phonological awareness and reading. Even in the first grade, Ricky is unable to
read independently, however, his teacher is not concerned. I, on the contrary, am concerned, so I made
the choice for Ricky to receive tutoring twice a week. While receiving assistance in reading and
writing, I have emphasized to the tutor how I wish for them to praise and practice private speech with
Ricky. Private speech is when the child speaks to themselves when completing a task, reading a
passage, and more. Ricky can practice this tactic with his tutor through reading out loud, stating all the
steps necessary to complete the activity and more verbal actions. My choice for Ricky practicing
private speech is because Berk and Meyers state, Children who freely use private speech during a
challenging activity are more attentive and involved and show better task performance (323). Ricky s
increased engaged attitude and attentiveness will allow him to perform better, therefore improving his
reading skills. When I was around Ricky s age, I was diagnosed as dyslexic and I fear that he will have
this learning disability. I, too, was unable to read independently in the first grade, however, my choice
for Ricky to practice private speech will assist in his academic performance. However, I am
embracing the influence of nature for Ricky, because with early detection and actions plasticity,

The Consequences Of The Cuban Revolution
The Cuban Revolution was a necessary act that attempted to improve the lives of the cuban population
through many horrific events. The Cuban Revolution, which began in the early 1950 s, was an
overthrow of a corrupt government. Throughout Fidel Castro s multiple attempts to improve the
horrific conditions of the Cuban population, the Revolution became a long and tragic journey
beginning with the 26th of July Movement, to The Bay of Pigs invasion, to The Cuban Missile Crisis.
In 1940 to 1944, communist Fulgencio Batista withheld power as the president of Cuba and then from
1952 to 1959, United States backed dictator until fleeing Cuba because of Fidel Castro s 26th of July
Movement. Socialist Fidel Castro governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to
1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008. Fidel Castro s intent was to provide Cuba with an
honest democratic government by diminishing the corrupt way in which the country was run, the large
role the United States played in the running of Cuba as well as the poor treatment the living conditions
of the lower class. On July 26th, 1953, Fidel Castro led one hundred and twenty nine men and two
women in a daring assault against the Moncada army Barracks in Santiago de Cuba to overthrow the
government of Fulgencio Batista. Fidel Castro s plan to overthrow the government of Fulgencio
Batista resulted in eight deaths, twelve wounded and more than sixty Cubans were taken prisoner to be
tortured and then executed.

Overseas Listing Of Mainland Chinese Companies
Young Le ENGL 100: Writing about America and Globalization Prof. Elizabeth McKinsey November
18, 2014 From Sick Men to Strong Lions: Overseas Listing of Mainland Chinese Companies 1.
Introduction As Mainland Chinese companies develop, innovate, and grow, China has become one of
the superpowers in the world. Traditional state owned businesses introduced private capital to break
up state monopolies and became joint ventures to solve the potential management issues. In this way,
Chinese companies were transformed from sick men , as westerners once described them, to strong
lions , reflecting westerners updated impression of China. Simultaneously, emerging companies
entered the domestic market quickly due to their pre eminent technology and unparalleled innovation.
However, currently, all Chinese companies face one huge problem lack of capital. Thanks to the
advancement of the worldwide financial market, especially that of stock exchanges, Chinese leading
firms have the chance to propose IPOs (initial public offerings), and acquire a significant amount of
domestic and foreign investment for future development. Moreover, companies can further expand
their capital in various ways, including initiating secondary market offerings and introducing private
funding. In this sense, not only does an IPO generate capital for the company, but it also enables the
company to acquire prolific capital, as long as the company operates profitably, and is able to attract
investors. Therefore,

Elementary Schools Teach Handwriting
Handwriting everyone uses it, however, some don t use it very well. Should Elementary schools teach
handwriting? Yes, because many people use it today, but some peoples writing is unreadable. There
are three main reasons why Elementary schools should teach handwriting. One, you use it in everyday
life, secondly you fill out job applications and other legal matters, thirdly people need to be able to
read your writing.
Elementary schools should teach handwriting because you use it in everyday life. You have to write
papers, take notes, and if some have jobs, write out checks. Most people though have unreadable
handwriting, so maybe learning at a young age will help. The kids and teachers may disagree by
finding it to hard or they are too young,

Why Is Florence Nightingale Important
Florence Nightingale is known as not only one of the most important women of all time, but as one of
the most influential people in health history. She is known for her work in nursing and for establishing
modern nursing. Florence Nightingale dedicated herself to nursing entirely, refusing marriage to focus
solely on her practice. She worked hard and made an impact one can only imagine to inspire.
Florence Nightingale was born on May 12th, 1820, in Florence, Italy, to William and Frances
Nightingale. Growing up, Florence lived with her parents and her sister, Frances, in a well connected
British family. She was raised at Lea Hurst where she received education, which included German,
Italian, and French. She always had a keen interest in philanthropy ... Show more content on

Not only did florence Nightingale revolutionize the world by nursing by establishing nursing schools
and emphasizing the importance of quality care and sanitation, but she also spread her knowledge
through writing books, such as Notes on Hospital (1859) and Notes on Nursing (1859). She spread her
knowledge and ideas so that everyone throughout the world could get proper care.
Florence Nightingales legacy is still remembered to this day. Many hospitals, museums, and schools
have been named in her honor and a number of statues built in her memory. Theater productins have
been written, as well as National Nurses day being celebrated every year on her birthday. Florence

Tiverton Road and Wolverton Street Corridor Improvement
Faculty of Technology and Built Environment
Introduction
We were asked by our Highway engineering lecturer to write a report about a current or previous
project listed on the Auckland transport site. After a research on the site, I have chosen to write about
Tiverton road Wolverton street corridor improvement.
Tiverton road and Wolverton Street, play a major role in linking the suburbs of New Lynn and New
Windsor. The 2.2km stretch of road carries an average of 31400 vehicles per day. And a two lane
addition was required to allow for the ease of travel and safer environment for both motorist and
pedestrian users. The project has been given less than 2 years to be completed starting in 2014.
Background
Back in 1920 s, the work had started in developing an arterial road that helped link west Auckland
with its central suburbs. The 2.2km stretch of road added great commercial and residential benefits in
linking and intersecting with major roads in the area.
On September 2012, the road works started after a site blessing held by local iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei
and Ngaitai ki tamaki in conjunction with Auckland Transport and Downer NZ.
Problem statement
With the increased traffic flow caused by the popularity of the road and the current motorway
extension to Maioro Street, the road required widening to lower traffic jams during rush hours.
Moreover, with the increase of residents in the area, the street required safer and better utilities such as
safer footpaths,

Social Differences Between The North And South Dbq Essay
There were many social differences between the North and the South. Southerners were usually rural
farmers who took pride in serving their country in the military. The Northerners were urban people for
the most part, so they had more railroad, canals, and technology. The Industrial Revolution gave
Northern states the development of machinery and capitalism which was responsible for majority of
the North s income. The South, however, didn t have much machinery because they depended on
tobacco which then changed to cotton for most of their income. Their entire way of life was based on
forced labor system.
Slavery played a big part in the causing of the Civil War. However, it was not the entire reason for the
war. The slavery issue was primarily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Beauregard led a bombardment on Fort Sumter, near Charleston, South Carolina after Anderson

A Very Brief Look at Worl War II
World War II started on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. France and Great Britain
declared war on Germany September 3rd. After France and Great Britain declared war on Germany
they mobilized their armies and stationed their troops. Waiting for Germany to attack, but they never
did. This eventually became known as the Phony War. By the end of May in 1940 the Germans had
trapped all of the allied forces around a northern French city. Allies went to the beaches at Dunkirk
because they were outnumbered, and outgunned. Great Britain set out to rescue the army, by sending
about 850 ships across the English channel to Dunkirk. They sent many other things in the rescue
effort. After Dunkirk resistance in France started to collapse, and by June 14, the Germans took Paris.
French leaders surrendered on June 22, 1940. During the summer of 1940 Germany s air force started
bombing Great Britain. The Germans started by attacking British airfields and aircraft factories. On
September 7, 1940 the Germans started focusing more on the cities so that they could break British
morale. The Battle of Britain stopped on May 10, 1941 because Hitler decided to call off his attacks
and focus on the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe. The allies learned from the Battle of Britain that
Hitler s attacks could be avoided. Italy was neutral at the beginning of the war, and Hitler s partner
Mussolini, knew he had to take action and after Germany declared war on France and

  • 2. Teddy Boys Research Paper During post war Europe, in Britain one of the first youth subculture the Teddy Boys and the forgotten Teddy Girls emerged around the 1950s. This subculture soon spread throughout the United Kingdom and became largely associated with the American Rock n Roll genre of music. As the subculture began to spread, they began to be seen as a rebellious British youth subculture. By then the Teddy Girls by were overshadowed by the Teddy Boys since there were more of the boys than the girls. Not only that, they were deemed boring by the media because their role at the time were still focused at home. The name Teddy Boys derived from their style of fashion that attracted youths from their generation. Their Edwardian style of clothing came from the high class in the 1940s which could be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But soon the media started to portray the Teddy Boys as misfits to society as they began to become involved in petty crimes. These crimes became so severe that workers started to hire ex boxers, ex soldiers, and even professional wrestlers to maintain order (Lowenstein 74). The Teddy Boys quickly earned a reputation for street fighting, low level crime activity, and attacks on British s growing West Indian community (McKay et al. 898). It was their same attacks on the West Indian community that lead to their decline and a rise in another subculture. Even though the Teddy Boys weren t shown in a positive light, this youth subculture became a breakthrough for other subcultures to emerge. Both the Teddy Boys and Teddy Girls set up fashionable trends for both male and female to follow, even though the males dominated this subculture. With it, they also set an example of what to expect as other subcultures would emerge taking after the Teddy Boys. Even still to this day, some subcultures in history can be compared to the Teddy Boys subculture and share something in common with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Religious Symbolism and Architecture of Angkor Wat and... Introduction Built by the Khmers between 802 and 1220 AD, the ancient temples of Angkor Wat exist as the remaining relics of a historically and religiously rich city. While many other historical and religious structures in Cambodia have disappeared due in part from being constructed out of vulnerable materials like wood, Angkor Wat still remains as a symbol of the divinity of its former kings, as well as for the palace itself. Likewise, Indonesia s Borodubur temples exist as the single remaining structures of the city. The temples of Angkor Wat and Borodubur hold several similarities within architecture and symbolism, both being heavily based on religious belief. However, different features within both structures, architecturally and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Decorative elements through out the towers and galleries present their own characteristics and fulfill specific needs within the temple. The towers are formed into the shape of the ever popular lotus buds, and the galleries are used to expand the many passageways of the temple. Also, the axial galleries within the temple are used to connect several enclosures. Characteristic decorative components of Angkor Wat include narrative and historical bas reliefs, pediments, and devatas. The bas reliefs located in the gallery of Angkor Wat holds a special signification for Angkor Wat. The gallery displays heaven and the underworld in which garudas and lions are holding the celestial palaces. These gerudas indicate that the palaces were floating in heaven, comparing Angkor Wat to the palaces of the Gods. This display furthers the idea that Angkor Wat acts as a liason between the world of Heaven and Earth. Because the palace physically remains on earth but spiritually resides within heaven, the palace acts as communal place for believers to gather. The bas reliefs and pictures did not only serve to decorate the palaces, or depict stories of the past. They hold the important task of transforming the palace into a celestial dwelling or heavenly place. Further evidence to support this notion is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Philosophical View Of Animal Rights A Philosophical View of Animal Rights Should animals be harmed to benefit mankind? This pressing question has been around for at least the past two centuries. During the early nineteenth century, animal experiments emerged as an important method of science and, in fact, marked the birth of experimental physiology and neuroscience as we currently know it. There were, however, guidelines that existed even back then which restricted the conditions of experimentation. These early rules protected the animals, in the sense that all procedures performed were done so with as little pain as possible and solely to investigate new truths. Adopting the animals? perspectives, they would probably not agree that these types of regulations were much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Rodd 4). So, it is easily seen how many views have accumulated over time. The task of determining animal rights has also come into the context of examining these inherent differences on qualitative and quantitative levels. We can say, for instance, that on a qualitative level, a cow is less intelligent than a human. But, we must then determine, on a quantitative level, how much more unintelligent that cow really is when compared to humans. And, once we decide that, we must then decide if that margin of intelligence is enough for us humans to slaughter that cow in order to benefit human kind from its products. Questions like this and others, which are very similar, have become the snowballing debate over the question of animal rights. Where do we draw the line? How do we determine the value of another being?s life? Well, up to this point, we as a society have been pretty confident in judging the lives of millions of animals worldwide (or so we can conclude by looking at the number of animals sacrificed each year for the purpose of experiment, education, goods, etc.). We must first step back and analyze the ethical dilemma at hand and then proceed to carefully weigh its consequences. If we examine the question of animal rights cautiously, it is most often viewed as an ethical dilemma as opposed to an economic or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Character of Hedda Gabler in Ibsen s Hedda Gabler Essay The Character of Hedda Gabler Hedda Gabler is perhaps one of the most interesting characters in Ibsen. She has been the object of psychological analysis since her creation. She is an interesting case indeed, for to explain Hedda one must rely on the hints Ibsen gives us from her past and the lines of dialogue that reveal the type of person she is. The reader never views Hedda directly. We never get a soliloquy in which she bares her heart and motives to the audience. Hedda is as indifferent to our analysis as she is to Tesman s excitement over his slippers when she says I really don t care about it (Ibsen 8). But a good psychologist knows that even this indifference is telling. Underneath the ennui and indifference ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hedda is the product of aristocratic birth. She is, as I mentioned earlier, the daughter of General Gabler, whose portrait hangs over this play not unlike the portrait of the absent father in Williams The Glass Menagerie. And in case we have missed the significance of the portrait in the stage directions or have overlooked it as an audience member, Miss Tesman rivets our attention to it and the reality of Hedda s aristocratic life: Well, you cant s wonder at that General Gabler s daughter! Think of the sort of life she was accustomed to in her father s time. Don t you remember how we used to see her riding down the road along with the General? In that long black habit with feathers in her hat? (Ibsen 2). Her aristocratic birth and her past is contrasted by her choice of a husband who has neither noble blood nor bourgeois money. We are told that this motherless child of an aristocratic general often gave in to fits of cruelty as a child: At the finishing school the presence of a girl with a head of abundant, wavy flaxen hair irritated her and provoked her to outbursts of cruelty which had their source in equal measure, perhaps, in envy and in a deep seated temperamental antipathy; for dearth of abundance, physically and temperamentally, is a characteristic of Hedda s nature (Weigland 246 247). ... • 6. Timpani In Haydn s Music Essay Timpani in Haydn s Music Franz Joseph Haydn, born March 31, 1732, is one of the most influential classical composers. Being known as the Father of Symphony, is an important reason to look at his work. Focusing closely on his use of timpani in two of his major pieces, Symphony 103 and Missa in tempore belli, can give us an in depth look on his development with the use of timpani. By first starting at looking at his lifetime, then delving into both pieces, next comparing and contrasting the two pieces, and finally, briefly going over other pieces influenced by the use of timpani will give us a better understanding. Franz Joseph Haydn, better known as Joseph Haydn, was born in Austria in 1732. When Haydn was eight years old, he became a choirboy in Vienna. After his voice had matured, he became a teenage freelance musician. After some time had passed, a noble family in Vienna, the Esterházy s, hired him to composed for them. From 1761 until about 1790 he worked for the Esterházy family composing instrumental works and opera s for their summer palace performances. At the age of eighteen, one has many decisions to make. One decision they can make is to choose whether or not to break the law about the legal drinking age. In many countries at the age of eighteen, one may legally drink alcohol unlike in America the legal age to drink alcohol is twenty one. In Keeping Legal Drinking Age At 21 Saves 900 Lives Yearly: Study, Bahar Gholipour opposes lowering the drinking age. Studies conducted since 2006 provided evidence for researchers to conclude that laws maintaining the legal drinking age at twenty one, has lowered the rates of drunk driving deaths. Gholipour provides the statistic of ... the number of fatally injured drunk drivers decreased by 57 percent among those ages of sixteen to twenty.... Researchers have also sustained evidence that shows the current drinking age has not lead to an increase of binge drinking within the teen population. Gholipour quotes, William Dejong, study researcher: The evidence is clear that there would be consequences if we lowered the legal drinking age. Having a higher drinking age has lead to mainly positive effects, such as, less alcohol consumption by youths and less alcohol related traffic crashes. There are five major groups of compounds that compose the human body. These are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleotides, and water. These compounds are all very important to humans and without them humans would not be able to survive. Compounds have many functions that encourage a human cell and a human body to function. The lipid molecules are most well known as forming basic structures of cell membranes and as energy storage molecules as well. There are various types of lipids, three main types include: true fats (triglycerides), phospholipids, and steroids. Lipids are also described as fatty acids. Fatty acids are merely carboxylic acids with long hydrocarbon chains. The fatty acid structure is one of the most fundamental categories of biological lipids, and is commonly used as a building block of more structurally complex lipids. Fats that include these molecules are unsaturated fats. Other fatty acids have no double bonds. Fats that include these fatty acids are saturated fats. In most human health situations, the consumption of unsaturated fats is preferred to the consumption of saturated fats. Like carbohydrates, lipids can also be categorized into simple and complex. Simple lipids are defined as those that are on hydrolysis yield at most two types of primary product per mole; complex lipids yield three or more primary hydrolysis products per mole. Hydrolysis is a chemical process in which a certain molecule is split into two parts by the addition of a molecule of water . When the average person takes a single look at a world map, they see multiple blue oceans covering the Earth. But, although we are surrounded by water, our clean water reserves dwindle rapidly. In her article, Water Works , Cynthia Barnett attempts to bring this issue to greater light and offers her own solutions. While I agree with many of Barnett s points, she fails to look at the arguments of her detractors to the detriment of her already flawed case. Throughout the article, Barnett analyses the idea of water scarcity. She accentuates the fact that aging infrastructure hampers our ability ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her argument is focused on the Pacific Northwest, our rainy marine paradise. She speaks to a specific population, citing the cultural significance of the salmon in this area (Barnett 2013). Unfortunately for her message, this ignores the ranging climates and situations around the world, where her solutions may not be as effective. While this may be persuasive towards the generally liberal population in the region that likely already agrees with her, it offers little for people who live in drier regions. Even within the United States, I have my doubts that Barnett s suggestions would work. For example, desert regions in California and plains in the Midwest would not benefit from these ideas. The article s biggest failing, however, is the view of the rest of the world. As Dr. Pierre Mukheibir, a civil engineer with over 20 years experience in the water sector, points out in his article that about 1.2 billion people live without access to clean drinking water. These people do not live in the Pacific Northwest, they mostly live in developing countries in Africa (Mukheibir 1028). Bowen viewed families as an emotional system, where each member is intensely connected to the other members. In order to analyses families and human behavior, Bowen used a set of concepts. These concepts became part of his family systems theory that we use today. Bowens family systems theory is made up of a total of eight concepts. These concepts include Triangles, Differentiation of self, Nuclear Family Emotional Process, Family Projection Process, Multigenerational Transmission Process, Emotional Cutoff, Sibling Position, and Societal Emotional Process. Using these eight concepts, Bowen was able to examine families and how they interact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of these goals include Facilitating awareness of how emotional systems function (Brown, 1990). This is important because it helps clients, families, and children learn about emotional systems work and function. In addition, another goal is to increase the level of differentiation, the ability to be in emotional contact with others yet still autonomous in one s own emotional functioning is the essence of the concept of differentiation (Kerr Bowen. 1988). In other words, being an emotional support system for family members, but remaining distant with one s own emotions. As mentioned above, Bowens family system theory is made up of 8 concepts, these concepts are (1) Emotional Fusion, (2) Differentiation of self, (3) Triangles, (4) Nuclear family emotional system, (5) Family projection process, (6) Emotional cutoff, (7) Multi generation transmission process, and (8) Sibling possession. The first concept that helps make up Bowen s family systems theory is Emotional fusion or lack of differentiation. Emotional fusion is where individual choices are set aside in the service of achieving harmony within the system (Brown, 1990). According to Brown, Emotional Fusion can occur in one of two ways, the first can be when an individual feels 100 percent responsible for others emotions and actions, and the other being a total emotional cutoff from the tension or feelings within a ... Why Spartans Are The Best Warrior Why Spartans Are The Best Warrior s If a war was to take place, and the Spartans are the enemy warriors, you better pray to god you live to breathe another day. There are many reasons behind the fact that Spartans are the deadliest warriors of all time. Could it be that they begin training to become a warrior at the age of 7? Or could it be how they were starved and only could get food by being a successful warrior. Spartans can be recognized as cruel warriors that cared for no one, when actually they had to be blood thirsty otherwise they would not survive themselves. When instructors saw this they would only sit and watch, looking for either a leader or a dominant individual. Unlike today Spartans already knew what their future held. That was to be a Spartan for life until you were dead. Many young men would attempt escaping Rome in hope to live a free life. Those who were caught escaping were hung on the first of every month. For example, key events or battles such as _____, or common trends that aid in the understanding of how society operated at that point in history. However, many American history textbooks avoid the topic of widespread manufacturing industries in the south, and their simultaneous development with the much more powerful agricultural industry. In addition, this ironworks was one the earliest, and inspired others to start ironworks. For example, the Alabama ironworks received information published about them in the Franklin County Tuscumbian in 1824 . The article described the ironworks as being having a forge, furnace, and saw and grist mills. This means that the forge supplied their own fuel, purified iron ore, and wrought the iron into tools for farms. Despite many ironworks not still being here today due to the civil war, it is understood that there were many ironworks in Alabama that aided in the southern economy through both aiding plantations and though the eventual exports. Another significant ironworks in Alabama was the Shelby Ironworks. Although most of the ironworks development was during the civil war, it consisted of major developments during the antebellum period leading into the civil war. One of the significant advantages to this forgery was that there was a very large deposit of iron ore near the furnace, giving the ironworks a great advantage when it came to quality and quantity of their products. Like the Tannehill ironworks, the Shelby ironworks also sold tools to local farm in Alabama. However, they also sold raw ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Pros And Cons Of Cognitive Therapy Theory The definition of cognitive relates to the activity that goes on within the mind, such as thoughts, perception, and memory (Cognitive, n.d.), and behavior is understood as the manner that a person handles their acts (Behavior, n.d.). Cognitive therapy (CT) focuses on how the processes that happen within the mind and connects them with the physical symptoms that occur, and help to prove the role that thoughts play in behavior. (Kingdon Dimech, 2008) The focus of behavioral therapy is to exclude unwanted behaviors and strengthen and reinforce beneficial behaviors (Cherry, 2017). So, when the two are combined together, the two are looking at how a person s mindset can shape the way that they act, which is what cognitive behavioral therapy is about. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) began in the 1960s through Dr. Aaron T. Beck, and is now the most common studied form of psychotherapy (Hoffman, Asnaani, Vonk, Sawyer, Fang, 2012). This form of therapy has also been proven that when handling any disorder that can experience an episode that through this therapy it can help prevent another episode from reoccurring (Hoffman, Asnaani, Vonk, Sawyer, Fang, 2012). Through this process, it will allow the patient to see that they are in charge of their behaviors and thoughts. It also allows them to realize when there is a chance of a relapse occurring, so that way they know how to help prevent themselves from not having control of their thoughts and behaviors. So, ... When the first colonies were founded, it was due to pilgrims wanting religious freedom, and countries striving for move power, riches, and a name. The southernmost colonies were founded when wealthy leaders expanded looking for land ownership and more power. (5 points) Opportunity cost can be defined as a high valued alternative that must be given up in order to achieve or obtain something else. In other words, for anything you decide to spend your time doing results in sacrificing the opportunity to engage in doing something else. The value of the sacrificed alternative can only be determined by the individual that is choosing to sacrifice it. There are numerous examples of opportunity cost surrounding us throughout every day. Personally, I face opportunity cost scenarios constantly, both at my job and at home. The opportunity cost of me being in college is the time I would have spent doing a number of other things I enjoy, such as spending time with friends and family. However, obtaining an education and pursuing my goals is extremely important to me, therefore, I must sacrifice other high valued alternatives that I greatly enjoy. 2. What is the difference between absolute advantage and comparative advantage? What is the benefit of trade? (5 Points) Comparative advantage occurs when an individual or firm has the ability to produce a good or service at a lesser opportunity cost than that of other entities. Absolute advantage occurs when an individual or firm has the ability to produce a good or service more efficiently and at a lower cost per unit. In other words, an individual or firm that has the absolute advantage has the ability to produce more of good or service ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There was not a variety of food choices available for Middle Age people. The food they ate depended on where they lived, what they lived by, and whether they were rich or poor. In some ways the middle ages diet was the same but in other ways it was very different to our diets. In the Middle Ages there were certain foods more commonly eaten than others. The staple foods for everyone (upper class and lower class) included breads and root vegetables such as parsnips, carrots, yams, and onions. Figure 1 shows bakers making bread which was one of the major foods of the Middle ages. Almonds were a common nut used as thickeners in soups, stews, sauce and of course were used in almond milk. For people living on the coast, the main foods consisted of fish caught from the nearby sea. • 21. Analysis Of The Poem The Painter By John Ashbery A majority of John Asbury s poems are about the process in which the mind of a person interacts with the external surroundings. John Asbury has often tried to describe how the human mind interacts with the natural world. In his poem The Painter the poet has also incorporate the diverse aspect of nature which has been seen through the minds of a painter. Through this poem, the poet has essentially tried to reach out and understand the deeper aspects of human emotions such as life, love, loss, alienation, creation, inspiration, reality and perspective. The fact that John Asbury is an ardent art critic, he is deeply involved and associated with the process of artistic creation and appreciation which is more so reflected through his poem The Painter (Frye 208). In the poem The Painter , the poet John Ashbery describes the artistic creativity in direct conflict with the demands of today s society. In this poem he expressed how an artist wants to paint the sea and bring forth a relation between the sea and the buildings of the city. The painter places himself amidst the nature and the urban concrete jungle and as he expected his work to gain creativity, his expectations got diminished as he was unable to capture reality of life through his art. He was thus attempting to create something impossible and remains unsuccessful (Ford 112). Ashbery considered this desire to be very simple as he compared his ambition to children s prayer. • 23. Bedrock River If a river flows over bedrock, the bedrock restricts widening and lateral mobility which can distort the shape of the bends in the river (Hooke and Yorke 2011). Substrate influences channel form at the reach scale, with bedrock channel found to be narrower and deeper than alluvial channels (Whitbread et al. 2015). This means that the substrate the river is flowing over does have an effect on what the river is doing. The bedrock restricts widening and lateral mobility, which limits how fast the river can meander. If the river is flowing over a substrate that is easily erodible, and then if it erodes down to bedrock the river will become less sinuous. Meandering rivers are not common in bedrock channels because bedrock channels are narrower and deeper than alluvial channels (Whitbread et al. 2015). The alluvial channels allow the river channel to become wide and therefore the river is able to meander because its channel is so wide. Changing the type of bedrock can influence the width and depth of the river (Whitbread et al. 2015). The maximum width/depth ratio decreases with increasing fracture spacing (Whitbread et al. 2015). This is because the fractures create a weak spot in the rock that allows the river to erode into those fractures. Adding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Compare And Contrast Frankenstein And Pride And Prejudice Deep, gut wrenching horror and passionate, gripping love: these are what the novels Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice, respectively, are chiefly remembered for. The differences in their plotlines are striking. While Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein s creation of a monster and the havoc that the monster wreaks, Pride and Prejudice recounts the charming and colorful love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. However, despite the obvious differences in the novels subjects, the authors of both works share a similar purpose. Both Shelley s Frankenstein and Austen s Pride and Prejudice depict the dangerous results of hubris with the purpose of warning society to keep one s pride in check, lest devastating consequences ensue. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both authors caution against becoming too prideful, for excessive pride can be disastrous. This message is extremely poignant when examining the historical context of Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice. During the time period Frankenstein was published, science was making extraordinary strides. The triumphs of the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution instilled a level of confidence in scientists, and experiments became more and more ambitious. In the wake of this exponential progress, Frankenstein serves as a reminder that pride should never remain unchecked. Overconfidence mustn t be allowed to jeopardize one s judgment, and careful considerations must be made as to the morality and reasonability of one s actions before taking on a task. Frankenstein became caught up in his passion and in his pride, and thus he was unable to foresee the consequences of his actions. Though Frankenstein is by no means a censure of scientific progress or experimentation, it is a cautionary tale that advocates that one should always remember one s own infallibility, and not become caught up in the quest for success and recognition. Analogously, Pride and Prejudice can be examined through an analysis of the sociopolitical sentiment of Austen s time period. In Austen s sphere, a desirable marriage was the ultimate goal for a young lady. However, Elizabeth nearly jeopardizes her chance of securing just this, as her pride prevents her from merely liking to Darcy. Though her near loss of Darcy may not immediately appear comparable to Frankenstein s loss of his friends and family, the particular emphasis placed on marriage as a means of social mobility in Austen s Regency England would render the potential loss of a favorable marriage a most devastating outcome. Thus, Elizabeth s ability to finally abandon her pride and secure this match is particularly poignant. She finally achieves the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is initially misunderstood by those around him, is convicted of a crime he did not commit, he greatly enriches the lives of those around him, and is eventually executed for refusing to proclaim his own innocence. Much of Thomas Newman s music is rooted in the sounds of the deep south, with several interesting cues written for an eclectic ensemble including such weird and wonderful instruments as a bowed travelling guitar, a Vietnamese banjo, a jaw harp, bass marimbas, a tonut and the omnipresent saz. Occasionally, the music attains a kind of hypnotic sensibility that draws the listener in, but at other times it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Alison Bechdel s Fun Home A Missed Connection Much of Alison Bechdel s graphic memoir Fun Home is focused on the relationship between Alison and her father. Due to this, the relationship between Alison and her mother is often pushed to the sidelines. Although it may seem that their relationship doesn t play a main role simply because of the focus of the story, it becomes increasingly obvious as the novel goes on that Alison and her mother don t have much in the way of a relationship or connection. While at the forefront Alison explores the many similarities and differences between her and her father, she also more subtlety looks at the vast differences between her and her mother and the one similarity they did have: a passion for the arts. The panels on page 186 of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the bottom panel, the image depicts Alison s work table with lots of art supplies and some sketches strewn over the surface, and on the bottom right of the table is a copy of The Importance of Being Earnest. This was the play that Alison s mother had just performed in at the time, and the presence of this play on Alison s desk shows Alison s attempt to reach out to her mother and relate to her. The copy of the play being located near all of Alison s art supplies draws focus to the relationship between the two art forms of theatre and visual art and the fact that there is something in common there, just like in Alison and Helen s relationship. Alison s blank diary is also on the desk, and Alison says that her earnest diary entries had given way to the implicit lie of the blank page (Bechdel 186), and the use of the word earnest again draws the attention to the play and the way Alison fights to connect with her mother through art. These blank diary entries could also describe Alison s relationship with her mother. Although Alison tried earnestly to connect with her mother in the same way she tried to write in her diary, in the end, all that was left of the story of their relationship was blank pages. There could have been a connection there through their shared love ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These sentiments are echoed by Kreitner and Kinicki (2006) who pose that a good reward system should attract talented people and motivate and satisfy them once they have joined the organization. Leadership has existed for as long as people have interacted, and it is present in all cultures no matter what their economic or social makeup. Leadership is not only a human quality; it is found in primitive forms in many animal species, from low level vertebrates such as chickens to higher level primates such as gorillas and whales (Troittier, Wart and Wang, 2008). Leaders have a great influence in the organizations as they fuel employee motivation by offering benefits and rewards that meet individual needs Kreitner and Kinicki, 2006 and Yukl, 2002). Kim (2002) suggests that a leader s use of a more participative management style will result in higher levels of satisfaction among his or her employees. Job satisfaction is extremely important for the well being of the organization as well as the individual (Vecchio, 2006). The significance of job satisfaction can be viewed in the context of two decisions people make about their work. The first is the decisions to join and retain in the organization. The second is the decision to work hard in pursuit of high levels of task performance (Schermerhorn, Hunt and Osborn, 2000). People s degree of job satisfaction can range from extreme satisfaction to extreme dissatisfaction. In addition to having attitudes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Social Construction Of Childhood Childhood, in the 21st century, has become the center of attention because of the highly influential book Centuries of Childhood published in the year 1960. In the book, Aries (1960) argued that the concept has been created by the modern history and further indicated that children were considered as mini adults before the 17th century. According to Dr. Montgomery (2013), the childhood in 1970s and 80s have enormously transformed in terms of their treatment and their lives. Moreover, Dr. Montgomery revealed the contemporary and historical differences in the terms childhood. For instance, children in the 21st century have fewer responsibilities and their lives are characterized by school, play, consumption and family instead of paid labor, work, production and public life. This implies that the standards of childhood differ on the basis of economic setting and traditions of the societies. • 42. Personal Reflection Paper My son, Ricky is now six years old and he has undergone many milestones and changes to be who he is today. All throughout Ricky s life I have worked on his intelligence, morals, and social skills so he can become a valuable member of society. In regards to Ricky s intelligence, I have worked on his ability to read and his sleep habits which correlate with his intelligence. In regards to Ricky s morals, I have stressed the value of honesty and treating others kindly. Lastly, Ricky is practicing sociodramatic play and participating in recreational activities to gain social skills. When Ricky was born I vowed to improve his intelligence. This is now increasingly important since Ricky is in school. I have been advancing Ricky s intelligence through practicing private speech. Since kindergarten, Ricky has been having difficulty with phonological awareness and reading. Even in the first grade, Ricky is unable to read independently, however, his teacher is not concerned. I, on the contrary, am concerned, so I made the choice for Ricky to receive tutoring twice a week. While receiving assistance in reading and writing, I have emphasized to the tutor how I wish for them to praise and practice private speech with Ricky. Private speech is when the child speaks to themselves when completing a task, reading a passage, and more. Ricky can practice this tactic with his tutor through reading out loud, stating all the steps necessary to complete the activity and more verbal actions. My choice for Ricky practicing private speech is because Berk and Meyers state, Children who freely use private speech during a challenging activity are more attentive and involved and show better task performance (323). Ricky s increased engaged attitude and attentiveness will allow him to perform better, therefore improving his reading skills. When I was around Ricky s age, I was diagnosed as dyslexic and I fear that he will have this learning disability. I, too, was unable to read independently in the first grade, however, my choice for Ricky to practice private speech will assist in his academic performance. However, I am embracing the influence of nature for Ricky, because with early detection and actions plasticity, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction As Mainland Chinese companies develop, innovate, and grow, China has become one of the superpowers in the world. Traditional state owned businesses introduced private capital to break up state monopolies and became joint ventures to solve the potential management issues. In this way, Chinese companies were transformed from sick men , as westerners once described them, to strong lions , reflecting westerners updated impression of China. Simultaneously, emerging companies entered the domestic market quickly due to their pre eminent technology and unparalleled innovation. However, currently, all Chinese companies face one huge problem lack of capital. Thanks to the advancement of the worldwide financial market, especially that of stock exchanges, Chinese leading firms have the chance to propose IPOs (initial public offerings), and acquire a significant amount of domestic and foreign investment for future development. Moreover, companies can further expand their capital in various ways, including initiating secondary market offerings and introducing private funding. After a research on the site, I have chosen to write about Tiverton road Wolverton street corridor improvement. Tiverton road and Wolverton Street, play a major role in linking the suburbs of New Lynn and New Windsor. The 2.2km stretch of road carries an average of 31400 vehicles per day. And a two lane addition was required to allow for the ease of travel and safer environment for both motorist and pedestrian users. The project has been given less than 2 years to be completed starting in 2014. Background Back in 1920 s, the work had started in developing an arterial road that helped link west Auckland with its central suburbs. The 2.2km stretch of road added great commercial and residential benefits in linking and intersecting with major roads in the area. On September 2012, the road works started after a site blessing held by local iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and Ngaitai ki tamaki in conjunction with Auckland Transport and Downer NZ. After France and Great Britain declared war on Germany they mobilized their armies and stationed their troops. Waiting for Germany to attack, but they never did. This eventually became known as the Phony War. By the end of May in 1940 the Germans had trapped all of the allied forces around a northern French city.
