High School Shootings
A series of events involving guns has brought the United states to a realization that they might
need to take action before more people get hurt. One event that has occurred among many is the
shooting in Parkland Florida. On February 14, 2018 17 year old Nikolas Cruz took an AR 15
assault rifle into his former high school Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killing 17 and
wounding others. This was the deadliest school shooting since 2012 and Sandy Hook Elementary
School. The government needs to keep guns out of people s hand that are not qualified or stable
enough to own a gun, Also they government needs to create stricter requirements hand and or own a

HISTORY OF MANAGEMENTTHOUGHT AND ITS LEGACY FOR TODAY S WORLD
But I m coming to believe that all of us are ghosts .... It s not just what we inherit from our
mothers or fathers. It s also the shadows of dead ideas and opinions and convictions. They re no
longer alive, but they grip us all the same, and hold on to us against our will.

What went wrong in this example? A number of very bright people spent a lot of time re designing
a task to make it more efficient, but ended up with poorer performance, employee dissatisfaction,
and probably higher hiring and training costs. The well intentioned managers at Hovey and Beard
ignored the lessons of history. They introduced what most managers believed were methods to
improve efficiency without considering the likelihood of undesirable side effects. It was these side
effects, however, that caused efficiency to decline instead of increase. For these reasons, among
others, this chapter explains the development of management thought and shows why the
application of some still popular concepts and techniques do not always work out as planned.
EARLY MANAGEMENT
The practice of management can be traced back in time thousands of years. The Chinese
bureaucracy was, for example, fully developed into a hierarchy of officials based upon a merit
rating system perhaps as early as 1000 B.C. One of the most ancient terms used to describe the
position of a manager is that of vizier in Egypt. The title was in use around 1750 B.C. and
probably earlier. The rule of ten in the span of management was an Egyptian practice of allocating
around 10 servants to each supervisor. The ancient concepts

The Fear Of Robots From Star Wars
The Fear of Robots R2D2 from Star Wars is a robot that helps the humans and is a famous movie
icon. Decepticon from Transformers, however, is a widely known robot that is out to kill
humans. These movies and other social inputs have made a two sided view of robots; either
people support robots and are excited to see the future with them or they are against them and fear
any kind of artificial intelligence. Robotics is a double edged sword; there is a considerable
amount of evidence and experience to safely say that robots are essential to humans, yet many
people have the innate fear that they will surpass humans. Rather than fearing robots, people should
try to embrace the advancing technology and the benefits that could result from it.... Show more

For example, robotic technology is helping amputees by offering robotic body parts. This
scientific breakthrough gives a person the power to grab things for themselves or get around
without a wheelchair and continue with normal life. Robots not only help patients, but they also
help the doctors by assisting with surgery. One example is the new DaVinci surgical system.
This device allows the doctor to perform complex surgery with a minimally invasive approach
through a separate console that magnifies the doctor s view of the working area. This new
technique allows the doctor to perform the same work on a minimalized scale which makes it
easier to perform tasks where the human hand is too big to work. This minimally invasive
approach also helps patients recover from surgery since the incision is smaller, reducing the risk
of infections. According to DaVinci s website, this new technology has helped over 3 million
patients worldwide, which shows that many people are not afraid to trust these machines to do
their job. Another very important field robots play in is the military. Today, more than ever,
soldiers lives are being spared because of the robotic soldiers that are stepping in and doing the
dangerous jobs that could mean life or death. The Army, Marines, Navy, and the Air Force are all

Socialization And Immigrants During The Gilded Age
The Gilded Age was a time period in the history of the United States in which a large number of
serious social problems rose about. In the North and the West especially, this was also a time of
rapid growth. During this time, a lot of immigrants came to the United States as well. To them,
America was seen as the land of opportunity. In their home countries, the working conditions were
terrible and they had very low wages, so they came to America in hopes of a better life. Little did
they know, the United Stateswas not much better for them. Although, with a large amount of
workers now in the United States, some skilled and others unskilled, it allowed industry to expand
and consolidate. During the Gilded Age, industry expanded and became stronger over time,
resulting in workers coming together and organizing themselves into unions and forcing the federal
government to step away from practicing laissez faire capitalism.
This time period really began when a new type of business organization came about. People,
called entrepreneurs, would start their own business and use large scale production with the end
goal of lowering the prices of goods and allowing them to make a huge profit on it. Some people
during this time would call these entrepreneurs robber barons because of the the low wages that
they paid their workers in combination with their terrible tactics to destroy their competition. Many
business owners were also philanthropists. These were the people that donated the money that they
made to good causes. One person who is an example of this is Andrew Carnegie, who supported the
ideas of the Gospel of Wealth and believed that the more fortunate and wealthy people had the
responsibility of giving back to society. Some of these business owners were accused of having a
monopoly, which is having complete control over the supply of a product or service. Overall, this
industrialization lead to more goods at a faster rate, which greatly contributed to the rise of big
businesses. These businesses lead to a greater profit, which lead to bigger business, which
eventually lead to corporations.
Industry also expanded and came together in terms of economic practices. For example, one type
of economic practice was a

Positive And Negative Effects Of Mosquito
According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, every year more than 1.5 million people around
the globe lose their lives due to mosquito borne diseases (2012). A mosquito is an insect which
lives around the world especially in tropical and subtropical countries. The mosquito has both
positive and negative effects. As part of positive effects, larvae of mosquitoes are food for fish and
dragonflies, and when mosquitoes consume nectar, they help the flowers to pollinate. On the other
hand, mosquitoes make people annoyed and cause many diseases. World Health Organization
(2016) explains that the mosquitois the greatest menace which causes many diseases and they are
responsible for more than million deaths and cases every year. There are many diseases that caused
by mosquitoes, but the diseases are commonly found and get people s attention because they have

The Role Of Aboriginal History In Western Australia
Indigenous Australians have lived in this land for approximately 60,000 years, it s believed they
migrated from Africa to Australia through southern Asia. In 1770 Capitan James Cook, arrived in
Australia from England and claimed the land in the name of the United Kingdom, from that time
onwards British settlers took Aboriginal s land, resources, displace their people and pretty much
destroyed their culture.

Clownish Elements In Trickster Tales
People read Trickster Tales many times during their lifetime and although they can be very different
by the means of plot, setting, and characters, they can be tightly interconnected by certain,
unnoticed, hidden elements that we as readers don t think much of as we are reading. The
incorporation of these hidden elements in a story help to form a Trickster Tale, such as humorous
/clownish elements, uses of anthropomorphism, and the characters use of brain over brawn. A story
has to contain these elements to be considered a Trickster Tale and all of the tales are connected
through these elements. The qualities are widely emphasized in the three Trickster Tales provided,
as the three characters; Anansi, Master Cat, and Coyote, possess each of these qualities in their
own style. First of all, the use of humorous/clownish elements is in all Trickster Tales, which the
trickster uses to his advantage. Humorous/clownish elements can be found in, How Stories
Came to Earth, as Anansi tricks the other character by stating, Fool, I am taking you to pay for
the sky god s stories. For instance, the trickster, Anansi, fools the leopard by digging a hole and
concealing it to trap the leopard inside, thereby making the leopard look ridiculous in order to
obtain the sky god s stories. More of these elements can be found in, Coyote Steals Fire, in which
Coyote uses all of his resources to the best of his ability as it is stated that, He distracted Thunder
and made him blink. Then,

The Causes Of Teen Pregnancy

Teen Pregnancy
Teen pregnancy is not a subject to take lightly. Being in high school, students are held to high
standards. They are in fact young adults who are trying to build their success to go onto the next
step in life, but just one mistake can ruin everything. Having unprotected sex is the leading cause to
teenagers getting pregnant. Oral contraceptives are recommended if girls are sexually active, but
being on birth control does not give them one hundred percent accuracy of not becoming pregnant.
A problem to teen pregnancies can be unprotected sex, as said in the first paragraph, that is the
number one cause to getting pregnant. When girls and boys become teenagers, their bodies start
to develop all of these hormones, and that is when people start taking the route of having sex.
Having sex can be a huge roller coaster, because not only are they giving themselves away to their
partner, they are putting their own life at risk. Almost 1,700 teen girls get pregnant every single day
(Teen Vogue). That is seventy girls every hour.
Not only can becoming pregnant be hard for the mother, but for the child too. The normal signs
that the teen may be pregnant can be that she misses her period or that she gets morning sickness.
Mothers may experience high blood pressure (hypertension), and they have a higher risk of
preeclampsia. This is a dangerous medical condition that combines high blood pressure

Constitutional Right to Privacy and the Us Patriot Act...
Privacy Essay
Privacy. What do you think the average American would say if you told them they have no
Constitutional Right to Privacy, as privacy is never mentioned anywhere in the Constitution? That
the information they share over the World Wide Web has little if any protection by or from the
government. Of course our government is hard at work to modernize the form of weeding out the
unsanitary to which some cenacles might call censorship. But the main question still stands, do we
have a right to privacy and is the government violating our natural freedoms, or do we need
someone to monitor the actions of our society to keep order. The question is as old as government;
to what extent should the government influence our lives. When you ... Show more content on

This is a very debatable topic and many parents have different grounds for the extent of their child s
privacy. Some children are monitored by their parents, correcting every mistake and punishing
every misjudgment. Other parents promote more of a free spirit and trust, to teach their child
independence and develop experiences. Two are differing theories of parenting and both are
different theories of government. One assumes that humans are naturally reasonable creatures and
the other that humans are naturally emotionally driven and unreliable. So the question then goes to
nature or nurture, and are humans reasonable or erratic? So we assume that man is a combination
of both good and evil, and in doing so we assume that some level of privacy is in order but also the
government must control those who diverge from the law. The question then
Domich 4
arises, to what degree should citizens be left to themselves and what degree should they be
monitored? The two extrema of this argument include the State of Nature, which has been
previously described, and what is also known as the Big Brother structure. The idea that if man
were molded to be perfect from birth, they would in turn live perfect lives is an idea that has been
philosophized, debated, and dreamed of for generations of intellectuals. In almost every theorized
Utopia, there has been a certain level of censorship. Censorship in these hypothetical societies exists

Analysis Of The Story Barn Burning By William Faulkner
Freedom In the story Barn Burning, William Faulkner writes about a boy whose father is a
crook and the boy s journey leaving his family. There are two main characters, Colonel Sartoris
Snopes (Sarty) and Abner Snopes. The boy s name in this is Colonel Sartoris Snopes and Abner
Snopes is the father. Abner Snopes feels that the law is always out to get him. So, he believes
that his family should stick r=together no matter what happens. The story is set in the late
eighteen hundreds after the civil war. The first scene of the story takes place in an old grocery
store, in which they are holding a hearing for Abner Snopes. A man named Mr. Harris accuses
Abner for burning down his barn, but he has no proof. The Justice calls Sarty to testify, but he
does not speak. With Mr. Harris having no proof and Sarty not testifying against his father the
Justice tells Abner that he should leave the country and not come back. Abner takes his family
and leaves the country where he is not welcomed. This opening scene sets the stage for the rest
of the story. This story shows that over time if we think that the world is out to get us we will
only push those who are close to us away. After leaving the town the family camped in a grove of
oaks. Before going to bed Abner called Sarty and accused him of not standing up for him. While
Abner was talking to Sarty he brought up the thought that the people in the store were only trying to
get at him. The next morning they got up and

The success of the Korean educational system is credited to being influenced through
Confucianism, resulting in the educational fever that has encompassed South Korea. When
Confucianism was introduced during the ChosГ»n Dynasty (1392 1910) it originally served as a
way to maintain power for the upperclassmen. However, Confucianism began to replace the
influence of Buddhism, leaving in its place, a national ideology and religion, largely determined
politics, economy, society, culture, and education (Lee 3). In other words, Confucian ideals began
to form the basis of Korean society during the ChosГ»n Dynasty, which continued into Japanese
colonialism (1910 1945) and remnants of it are still present today better known as Neo Confucian.
These ideals helped Koreans survive the turmoil it experienced as it was colonized, liberated, went
through the Korean War and the 1997 IMF crisis. Since education had only accessible for the elite
during the ChГґsun dynasty, its association with this drove Koreans to embed education as way to
achieve upward social mobility. However, social mobility through education is no longer as
attainable as it was a few decades ago due to the overpopulated amount of students seeking higher
education and competitive job market. Subsequently, Neo Confucianism is beginning

The Perceptions Of Victory And Defeat In Dominic Tierney s...
In Failing to Win, authors Dominic Johnson and Dominic Tierney analyze perceptions of victory
and defeat within the realm of international politics. These perceptions are examined through
psychological, political, and cultural factors (Johnson and Tierney, pg. 1). The book is divided into
three main sections. The first section focuses on two frameworks that shape perceptions of victory
and defeat, which Johnson and Tierney call score keeping and match fixing. The second section
delves into the conditions that may make people either score keep or match fix. Finally, the third
section uses case studies to further the argument that psychological factors impact perceptions of
victory and defeat. These case studies include: the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Tet Offensive, the Yom
Kippur War, the United States intervention in Somalia, and the American war on terror.

Score keeping is the hypothesis that people s judgements of victory and defeat simply reflect the
material outcome, meaning that observers use material gains and losses to determine who won
and who lost (Johnson and Tierney, pg. 21 22). While it can be difficult to measure the degree in
which people score keep and it is not the primary way that people decide winners and losers,
Johnson and Tierney argue that it is the best way to judge victory and defeat. The second
framework that is used to explain perceptions of victory and defeat is match fixing. Rather than
measuring material gains and losses like score keeping, match fixing is based on three categories:
mind sets, salient events, and social pressures. Each category produces biases that affect
perceptions of victory and defeat (Johnson and Tierney, pg. 51) For example, expectations whether
they are high or low tend to impact the public s mind set during

Miss Skeeter s Transformation In The Help

throughout the novelas she grows from a shy duckling to a strong, confident women in 1960 s

At the beginning of the novel, Miss Skeeter is utterly ambivalent. She isn t sure whether to blend

She went from being too scared to even contradict Hilly in private to having the audacity to pull

This review sets out to explore the answer to the question of how we ESTABLISING A

According to Störmer and Fahr (2010) The impact of absenteeism on firms or even a nation s

Whitaker (2001) states that sickness is a complex phenomenon that is influenced strongly by factors
other than health and when looking into absenteeism you cannot only look at the physical sickness
side of things but need to look in depth to many other issues such as stress, work satisfaction, family

Francis Ford Coppola s Film Apocalypse Now
In Francis Ford Coppola s critically acclaimed movie Apocalypse Now he installed a journey of
five soldiers into psychological madness down the Vietnamese river, and through four specific
scenes that Francis used his screenplay to boast the utter psychological madness. The first scene to
break down towards the stages of madness is the beach landing scene where the crew gets going
on launching their patrol boat. Throughout this montage of scenes, also the longest shot segment in
the movie, shows the men descending into the first stage of evil, which is the love of war.

Francis has done an excellent job of using the screenplay to demonstrate the last evil, which is
madness: the dehumanizations of oneself. Right before the crew lands, one of the crew
members dropped an acid tab. Francis uses that one line to create the screenplay for the whole
sequence. In the first moments, the Camera captures hazy dark scenes of the bridge, with
shadows lurking around, and bright colorful Christmas lights around the bridge. Francis makes
this scene look as it was a circus, with vague distorted music in the background, and flashes of
light to see the characters faces. This creates a window into what we see the soldiers experience
we get, utter madness. Once the crew members descend into the trenches we see very weird and
out of place shots. The first film shot is a group of black soldiers listening to Jimi Hendrix and
smoking pot. The Jimi Hendrix back sound is also supposed to represent what the crew member
that dropped acid is hearing and feeling. Coincidentally, Francis is also portraying his acid trip
externally with the vivid lights, and explosions. The next stop in the trench, there s a soldier firing
into darkness thinking that he s shooting at the enemy but it s really his own troops. Francis really
films this and uses his screenplay to make this look so hellish. There s screaming in the
background, distorted music, people yelling over the intercom, and loud explosions, but

The Great War Of World War I
Even though The Great War ended over 100 years ago, people are still arguing about how it all
started. Beginning in 1914, and involving over 30 countries, World War One was the first major
war to impact the world. Russia, Germany, Austria Hungary, and Serbia could all be considered
factors that helped rise World War One. Before the war, countries faced many internal and external

This idea, known as social Darwinism, in Austria Hungary perhaps further strengthened the want by
various ethnic groups to leave Austria Hungary. Additionally, a group which the Austro Hungarians
controlled were the Serbs, who were placed under their control after the Bosnian crisis of 1908. In
the Bosnian crisis, Austria Hungary annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina, against the approval of
Serbia( Bosnian crisis of 1908 ). Because Austria Hungary didn t have the approval of the
Serbians, the connection between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina was broken. Serbia was
connected to Bosnia and Herzegovina because the countries had ethnic and geographic similarities.
It seems likely that these connections limited the conflicts between Serbia and Bosnia, lowering
the tension in the Balkan region. However, the annexation by Austria Hungary created a barrier
between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia because the Serbians already had previous hatred for
Austria Hungary. This separation angered Serbia to an extent where Serbia demanded a portion of
the annexed land be given to them. Austria declined, and soon after threatened to invade Serbia if
they continued with their demands. The threats by Austria Hungary suggest that they had no fear of
creating conflict with Serbia, and would rather anger Serbia than help them. In addition, the
provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina had previously proved economically prosperous for

Metaphysical Conceit in the Poetry of John Donne Essay
Metaphysical Conceit in the Poetry of John Donne
Many of John Donne s poems contain metaphysical conceits and intellectual reasoning to build a
deeper understanding of the speaker s emotional state. A metaphysical conceit can be defined as an
extended, unconventional metaphor between objects that appear to be unrelated. Donne is
exceptionally good at creating unusual unions between different elements in order to illustrate his
point and form a persuasive argument in his poems.
By using metaphysical conceits in A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, Donne attempts to
convince his love (presumably his wife) that parting is a positive experience which should not be
looked upon with sadness. In the first stanza, Donne compares ... Show more content on

The speaker compares a frightful earthquake to the trepidation of the spheres, which is more
powerful than an earthquake, but less harmful. The lovers movement away from one another is
like the motion of the spheres and therefore it should not be feared. Donne uses the astronomical
term sublunary to describe normal love and contrast this type of mundane love to their own.
Theirs is a divine love which is elevated beyond simple physical bonds. When they part, their souls
remain as one without a breach, but an expansion,/ Like gold to airy thinness beat (lines 23 24).
These lines support the idea that their bond does not dissolve, but only changes form.
Near the end of the poem, Donne makes an unlikely comparison between the couple and a
draftsman s compass. This is one of his most famous metaphysical conceits because the two
elements which are being compared appear completely different, and yet, amazingly, Donne is
able to connect them. He explains that his wife is his fixed foot that leans towards him as he
roams and straightens again as he returns, but remains his center. Her firmness is what makes his
circle complete, [a]nd makes [him] end where [he] begun (line 36). The imagery of the circle and
the spheres in this poem solidify the eternity of their love and the knowledge that the speaker will
always return to the place where he began. Donne s comparisons create an image of celebration
rather than mourning.

Essay on Jimmy John s Competitive Forces Model
Jimmy John s Introduction The first Jimmy John s was created in 1983 in Champaign, Illinois,
by Jimmy John Liautaud. Liautaud founded Jimmy John s on the idea of providing the gourmet
sandwiches for a low price. The first Jimmy Johns was run out of a garage with used equipment,
and without an ice machine for the drinks because there wasn t any room. Liautaud grew interest
in his sandwiches by giving out free samples to people around town, especially college students.
As word spread about his sandwiches, Jimmy John s began to gain acclaim and began to make
money. (Gibbs, 2005) 1985 marked the opening of the second Jimmy John s. Since then the

With Jimmy John s reputation for quick service, the most notable substitute would be any of the
many fast food restaurants available. Second would the option of a sit down restaurant. Also, a
final substitute would be the option for consumers to purchase food from a grocery store and eat
at home. The fast food restaurants that would most likely serve as substitutes would be places
like Burger King, McDonald s, Taco Bell, and Wendy s. These restaurants offer relatively
inexpensive food like Jimmy John s, and also cater to the customer that is in a hurry. Jimmy
John s holds a decided advantage over these fast food burger and taco restaurants with their offer
of fresh ingredients and a healthier sandwich. Sit down restaurants may be able to compete with
Jimmy John s in their ability to offer a more nutritious meal, but they do not offer some of the
other amenities that are available at Jimmy John s. A sit down restaurant will not offer the quick
turnaround of a freshly made sandwich or be able to match the price of a Jimmy John s meal.
Consumers who purchase their own food and make their meals at home will be able to compete
with Jimmy John s on both price and nutritional value, but will not have the speed or ease of
ordering a sandwich from Jimmy John s. These three substitutes offer viable options to the
customers in Jimmy John s target market, but Jimmy John s

Riku Hiroshima Bombing Effects
World War II was a very violent and hostile time for the entire world. Countries like Japan and
China were gravely affected by the catastrophes that ensued during this time, and are continuing to

which younger generations have come to understand this influential period in history while
teachings of the facts, representation, and recollections of World War II in the public school

restrictive ways to reduce freedom of speech, subsequently using filters or blocking certain
keywords without denying adults the access of sexual content. The argument was that filters can

Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire two civilizations that have so much in common but are yet
so vastly different. Both civilizations have seen their fair share of their empires rise and fall.
Greece and Roman today are both tourist places that we visit for the history they provide from
hundreds of years ago. Ancient Greece and the Roman Empireboth seem to be founded and
perspired due to some type of water system helping them. Ancient Greece used the
Mediterranean Seas new channels for trade. Also, Greece used ships to help conquer nearby
islands, which in return made them very vulnerable to ground invasions. The Roman Empire
was founded on the Tiber River for a trade post. Around 509 44 BCE Romans conquered and
seemed to dominate the entire Mediterranean Sea basin. Both civilizations found that the seas
can help them conquer and control other civilizations. (Acrobatiq, 2017) Ancient Greece used a
writing system call Linear B, which is short of similar to Linear A. Linear B used syllabic signs,
(composed of logograms, a base 10 number system, and short vertical lines to separate words), to
communicate messages a total of 87 in all. Originally this writing format was thought to be
influenced by the Minoans. Then a British linguist and cryptologist found that the language was

Persuasive Essay About Fishing Charters

Depending on these items, the fishing charter may not be as fun and exciting as you expected.
Here are five things you shouldn t bring on your fishing charter in Alaska. Liquor: Fishing

Jewelry: Too often when people go on vacation, they don t return home with some of the items

Self Driving Cars Are Becoming Realistic And Reliable
Technology is everywhere around us, it lead to many useful creations such as computers,
cellphones, airplanes, televisions and many more. Technology created many ways for people to
move from one place to another, like the metro, bus, train, bicycles and cars. They are the most
common transportation tools used by the people who live in big cities. Science is trying to take it
a step further by making the car driverless. Self drivingcars are becoming realistic and reliable,
since it is developed by many big companies competing with each other for being the first to
release it for sale. Big corporations competing with each other are great for the progression of the
self driving cars, because they will all try to make the better one compared to other companies and
if they make it, the potential is absolutely insane.
The first autonomous driving ever achieved was around 10000 B.C., when the first horse rider
got onto a horse s back and rode on it without directing it to any direction. Although this
technology rarely achieved the goal of arriving at a target destination, for 11980 years, this was
the only form of autonomous driving humankind could get. This is the earliest traces of the
autonomous found. The second earliest was a Mercedes Benz team making a van drive itself on
empty streets at the speed of 100km per hour. After that, they achieved a autonomous driving on its
own for 1600km. Challenges from DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) spread

The limitation of power exists so that exercise of power must conform to notions of respect for
individuals and individual rights. Introducing the rule of law, according to Dicey the rule of law
has three meanings (a) the supremacy of regular law over arbitrary power (b) equality before the
law and (c) no higher law other than the rights of individuals as determined through the courts
(Dicey, 1885). When the government is answerable to the law, the court are empowered to make
the authoritative determination of what the law is. Laws must be clear, for example in the case
of the Burmal Oil Co Ltd v Lord Advocate [1965] the House of Lords upheld the claim for
compensation against the crown in respect of damage done by British forces during wartime. It
was seen as incompatible with the rule of law and caused the War Damage Act 1965. Control over
the discretionary power is essential. Since the British Constitution is un codified and the rights and
duties of citizens are not expressly codified in one central document. The classical British view of
rights is that individuals were free to do anything that was not prohibited, the Human Rights Act
fostered a change in the constitutional order, as it incorporated the European Convention on the
Protection of Human Rights 1951 [ECHR] into the domestic law of the United Kingdom. The
separation of powers is a model of government that many

Investigation Of The Cell Membrane Essay
Mustafa Elgabry
October 17, 2016
Period 3
Egg Lab
Introduction: The cell membrane benifits the cell in many different ways and is composed of many
different parts which help the membrane execute what it is supposed to practice. A model that
represents these parts is called the fluid mosaic model. The model contains proteins and
carbohydrates within a phospholipid bilayer that consists of hydrophobic tails and hydrophilic
heads. All of the components within the bilayer play a role in the function of the cell membrane. For
example the carbohydrates practice cell to cell recognition while the proteins transport molecules in
the cell and back out. Proteins also have alternate functions such as intercellular joining and
extracellular matrix. When molecules transport in and out of the cell through the membrane, there
are two types of transport, passive and active transports. Passive transport occurs when molecules
move with the concentration gradient. One example is simple diffusion, where the molecules
transport through the cell membrane effortlessly moving from a high to low concentration. Then
there is facilitated diffusion where the molecules such as glucose move with the concentration
gradient but have to use a protein to pass through the membrane. Osmosis, however, is the diffusion
of water molecules across the membrane, but the water molecules also need to pass through a
protein because the inside of the lipid bilayer consists of hydrophobic tails. The purpose

Febrile Epilepsy Research Paper
Each year, one in one hundred people in the United State develop epilepsy, but there is a less
common type of epilepsy. It s called febrile infection related epileptic syndrome, more commonly
known as FIRES. I happen to know one of the few people who have this type of epilepsy. Her name
is Kailee, and she goes to my brother s school. She was even in some of his classes. This type of
epilepsyoccurs in school aged children between the ages of six and seventeen ( What is FIRES?
). It starts with a mild febrile illness that lasts anywhere from four days to two weeks. Febrile
illness is when someone has a fever but they aren t sick with anything else ( Febrile Illness ). When
Kaylee was at this point, her mom thought she had the flu. This is very common, as the flu presents
itself as a fever in many children. Then, the child starts to have seizures. The seizures occur very
quickly, and the child needs to be hospitalized immediately at this point. Seizures the children
experience are non focal, meaning they have no consistent starting point or ending point in the brain

However, there are some ideas as to what causes the seizures. First of all, it could be genetic. The
problem with this theory is that no gene has been found that could link to FIRES. Some scientists
think the disease is a result of an autoimmune response, while others think the seizures are caused
by a malfunction in the metabolic process of some cells. Both of these theories have little evidence
to support them. FIRES could be a result of the febrile illness that comes before the seizures. The
idea is that the increased heat in the body results in the mutation of a pathogen. The new pathogen
might attack the brain and cause the seizures (Van

Malta, I found a little boring, but it gave me a need to travel. A longing that 15 years later I

The Characteristics Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation
1.1Background of the study
Motivation is a theoretically construct that used to explain our behaviour. It represents the reasons
for people s desire or actions. Motivation can also be defined as what causes a person want to
repeat behaviour or one s direction to behaviour. Behaviour is the way in which one acts or
conducts oneself, especially toward others.
Motivation can be describe as a starting point for any activity, job, intensity and persistence of
behaviour associate with particular task (Buckworth, Lee, Regan, Schneider, Diclemente, 2007).
They also state that motivation can influence behaviour and they emphasize that basically
motivation consists of two types which is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Based on Buckworth et
al. (2007) intrinsic motivation reflect as the purpose for an individual performing a behaviour, for
example for the pleasure and satisfaction but in extrinsic motivation it is difference because an

Jowett (2008) also claimed that extrinsic motivation may not the main factor that can influence an

process for achievement and this is where the intrinsic motivation is needed. Ryan and Deci (2000)
also emphasized that any profession or responsibility that associated to education such as parent and
teacher need high quality in creativity which mean this quality cannot be develop by intrinsic
motivation but in the other hand, understanding on these different type of extrinsic motivation are

The method of the ancient Greeks government were that the Greeks were a Democracy. A
democracy is a system of governments by the whole population or all the eligible members of a

I Love Lucy Essay
The show I Love Lucy was shot from 1951 to 1960; only six years after World War Two had
ended. During the war there was a lack of men in the United States to do all the physical labor and
common office jobs. Women were then given the opportunity to escape the boundaries of the
private sphere of their homes and go out into the workforce. Although, after the war was over and
the men came back to the United States the women, who were then used to working and being the
breadwinners of the family, were forced back into their homes being told they were too delicate or
incapable of doing the jobs that they had already been doing for years. The comedy show, I Love

Presenting the less than average bicultural, multiracial couple in a small New York apartment
during the age where it was still rare to have a multiracial couple. Most of the families in
America had migrated to the suburbs were as the Ricardo family continued to live in an
apartment in New York . Even though the Ricardo family represents the minorities of the nation,
there were still displays of discrimination towards Ricky s accent and his inability to say certain
words. Ricky was the oral clown of the show, a side kick to his wife s physical comedy of naive
women. Originally the producers wanted a white male to represent the typical American man
instead of a hot blooded cuban. Although America is often referred to as a melting pot of
cultures this was the first time the mixing of different cultures and races was visualized on
television. Bringing up the question, what is considered to be a typical American family and how
do multicultural couples choose to raise their children? I Love Lucy not only pushed the
boundaries of women s place in the public life and acknowledged the troubles and benefits of
being a multiracial and multicultural couple but at the time they were filming, it was uncommon
for a married couple with kids to sleep in the same bed on television. It was seen as taboo to have

The Oliver Versus Brock Case
A civil suit is commonly derived from a private party or individual, who alleges damages from
duty of care. Once a civil case begins, it is the duty of the plaintiff to prove, with evidence, duty of
care, breach of duty, causation, and damages. Conversely, the defendant must prove their
affirmative defense against documented allegations. The Oliver versus Brock case proves the
importance of supporting evidenceas opposed to hearsay statements, to prove the truth of the matter.
In the Oliver versus Brock case, Cathy (Plaintiff) filed a lawsuitagainst Bryan Whitfield Memorial
Hospital of Demopolis and the treating physicians Dr. F.S. Whitfield, Dr. Paul Ketcham and Dr.
E.C. Brock (Defendant) for negligence of care. Analyzing the facts in... Show more content on

Based on the information provided, Oliver s allegations were not supported with documentation,
but merely opinion and hearsay. In Oliver s affidavit, she stated that she read in the discharge
summary that Dr. Brock was consulted and assisted with treatment. Although the supporting
documentation of the previous statement is important, the more pressing issue becomes whether a
doctor patient relationship was formed in order to support the allegations.
Contrary to the alleged, Dr. Brock refuted the claim, defending that he never established a doctor
patient relationship with Anita, which relieves him of liability. In order to validate his refute,
Dr. Brock provided four factual elements that were supported by his counterparts; Dr. Whitfield
and Dr. Ketcham. The four elements that were presented in the affidavit included: (1) That there
has never been a doctor patient relationship between Dr. Brock and Anita Oliver, (2) Dr. Brock
has never seen or talked to Anita or Cathy Oliver, (3) Dr. Brock was not employed, engaged or
requested to serve as a consultant to treat Anita, (4) and Dr. Brock was not employed or engaged to
consult with doctors treating Anita, concerning complaints or medical problems. In order to

The Impact Of Multiculturalism And Multiracialism In...
Multiculturalism and multiracialism has become the proud hallmark of Singapore society today.
However, the issues that come together with them still seem to plaque the community even after
more than five decades. In retrospect, these issues are more protuberant in the implementation level
than at the policy making stage. The way Chua Beng Huat asserted in his paper titled
Multiculturalismin Singapore: an instrument of social control, it seems as though multiculturalism
and multiracialism are double edged swords which can cut both ways.
In the abovementioned paper, Chua (2003) asserts that under the CMIO (Chinese, Malay, Indian,
Others) scheme, the languages, religions and festivals of the three major groups receive formal
equal treatment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This melting pot model seems to be ideal as it emphasizes our shared identity and traits as
compared to the idea of multiculturalism, which is having different cultures and races co existing

culturally intolerant in certain aspects such as the sentiments of Singaporeans with regards to the
aftermath of the Little India Riots. Singaporeans had to be urged not to spread xenophobia (Sim,

The 1988 Free Trade Agreement
To ask why Canada entered the 1988 free trade agreement with the United States of America is to
ask a complicated question that is likely to garner a different answer from each respondent. The
best that one can do when analyzing the multitude of components that led to this agreement is to
eliminate any pre conceived notions that they may hold about liberalized trade, and attempt to
objectively assess the issues that this country faced in the years leading up to 1988. Free trade
between Canada and the US is likely one of the most contentious issues that our country has ever
faced. This becomes apparent when studying Canadian history throughout the 19th and 20th
centuries. Canadian economic development has flourished, and been stunted, as a... Show more

He did so without directly consulting the Canadian public. It seems that the economic recessions
witnessed in the mid 70 s and early 80 s, and the subsequent Macdonald Commission, signalled
an ideological shift in Canada from Keynesian principles of social responsibility, and
government economic intervention, to more austere, free market values associated with
economists like Milton Friedman. This is evident when we analyze the political ascension of
New Right figures Margaret Thatcher in Britain, and Ronald Reagan in the US. Thatcher, noted
for her self described war on labour and Reagan for his trickle down economic scheme were both
revered by our own Brian Mulroney, who emulated their efforts, facilitating enhanced corporate
sovereignty in Canada. This admiration that Mulroney had for Reagan may also have been
conducive to the timeliness of the FTA. A parallel can be drawn between theirs, and the
relationship that had existed between William Lyon Mckenzie King and Franklin Delano
Roosevelt beginning in 1933, which saw great movement towards Canada US economic
harmonization. However, it must be noted that Mulroney was perceived to be more corporatist
than laissez faire . Nonetheless, the rise of the Mulroney Conservatives provides a microcosm for
the neo liberal political consensus that spawned in this period. Neo liberal policies are
diametrically opposed to mixed economy approaches, instead favouring free market

The Impact of Large Aircraft on Aircraft Management Essay
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aircraft certification, a large aircraft
refers to an aircraft of more than 12,500 pounds which is the maximum certificated takeoff weight.
The heaviest and largest aircraft in the world have a maximum takeoff weight of over 600 tons.
Since larger aircraft have greater capacity, as well as advanced technological features, airport
management needs to make changes that cater to their operation. The first reaction of management
at large airports was to restrict the new, large aircraft by assigning them to specific terminals,
routes and runways. However, this led to delays and air traffic congestion. Given the growing
number of new, large aircraft, the only safe and efficient way to... Show more content on

This new standard calls for taxiways and runways to be widened, along with taxiways to taxiways
and the runways to taxiways.
Although the arrival of these new aircraft has eased airport congestion and continues to meet
passenger needs, it presents numerous challenges for airport management. As a result, various
changes have been made and others are to be put into effect. The super jumbo is 400,000 pounds
heavier, 11 feet longer, 41 feet wider and 15 feet taller than Boeing jumbo jets (Yeamans, 2006).
This aircraft, then, requires longer and wider landing space, and airport management has increased
airport pavement areas. Where existing land did not allow for expansion, additional land has been
identified and new airports constructed.
Similarly, the increase in the number of passengers has created a need for more gate hold rooms.
New, large aircraft have significantly affected passenger flow, in terms of the queuing network
system (Chiu and Walton, 2003). In some airports, adjacent gates may not operate when large
planes, such as the super jumbo and the A380, are loading and unloading. Gate capacities have
increased more than twofold in airports that have large aircraft. In order to maintain their services,
then, many airport managements have increased their number of gate hold rooms.
Airports have also expanded the capacity of baggage handling, concourses, ticket

Nontraditional Family In The Bean Trees
Everyone has a family of some kind. It may be the parents and siblings they were born with, or it
could be the gang of six biologically unrelated elite drivers with an affinity for robbing banks at
high speeds from Fast and the Furious. Ultimately, family is what people make of it, and it can be
the traditional two parents, one brother, one sister, and a dog named Spot, or it could be a woman
and the kid she was left with. The term traditional familyrefers to the socially expected behaviors of
each given role (for example, a mothertaking her kid to the doctor,) in the family. Members of a
traditional family in this case are either maritally or biologically related. Barbara Kingsolver s The
Bean Treeshas many characters who would consider themselves, or be considered, part of different
families. The Bean Trees addresses and deals with the fact that nontraditional families can be just as
strong as what society has defined as a traditional family.
The characters Taylor and Turtle are an example of a nontraditional family that is just as strong
as a traditional one. They meet the bare minimum requirements for a healthy mother daughter
relationship. Taylor takes Turtle to Doctor Pelinowski s in order to check out the damage of
Turtle s prior injuries. With this action, Taylor proves how she takes time out of her day to ensure
Turtle s well being, just as a traditional mother does. This care is necessary for every kind of family
to be strong. Next, Taylor worries about

Sex Trafficking Is The Trade Of Humans Essay
Sex Trafficking Sex trafficking is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual
slavery, forced labor, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others. This may
encompass providing a spouse in the context of forced marriage, or the extraction of organs or
tissues, including for surrogacy and ova removal.Sex trafficking is a very dangerous thing to be
going on in this world. Human traffickingcan occur within a country or trans nationally. The Metro
Atlanta area ranks number one in sex trafficking.
HOW IT STARTED
Although human trafficking is being carried on from ancient times, there is very little information
on when did it start. So, when did human trafficking start? There is a mixed response to it. Some
people believe that human trafficking actually started in the 1700s when small children were
exploited for work. Debates raged for years among feminists about free and forced prostitution, and
whether or not all prostitution should be included in the definition of sex trafficking. Sex
trafficking is horrible. Many people believe that prostitution is apart of sex trafficking, it could be
in a way, but also it is not. Prostitution the women are willingly selling their bodies and on the
other hand sex trafficking the women are being kidnapped or tricked into thinking they will be in a
better lifestyle. WHO?
The sex trafficking industry is fueled by buyers who pay traffickers to supply victims to meet their
demand. Men,

A Birthday; Christina Rosetti
A Birthday is an upbeat, jubilant poem about love, written by Christina Rossetti in 1861. While
many believe that this love she is expressing so effusively is about a man, I believe that it is
about her new found love for God. Rossetti, after all, was a very religious person. The poem,
surprisingly, has an exuberant, lively tone, a great contrast to her other works, which almost always
give a sense of gloom and bleakness.
Rossetti creates a structured arrangement, allowing the images to flow smoothly. By separating the
poem into two octets, containing eight syllables per line, Rossetti creates contrast by first,
describing her feelings her all consuming happiness, how interchangeably light and heavy her
feelings are then explaining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The octet is ended with her proclamation My heart is gladder than all these, // Because my love is
come to me . She cannot think of anything more joyful than the love she has found. The rhyming
convention set up by Rossetti facilitates the smooth flow of the poem when read out loud. Rhyming
the even numbered verses through the first octet assists the nice roll of words to a lovely ending.
The second stanza starts to express and convey her love through actions. This is apparent
because of the verbs used in the octet, such as raise , hang , carve and work . These imperatives
suggest an authoritative tone, because it is as if she is ordering someone to do these things.
Backing that statement up, is the fact that Rossetti changes from an iambic meter to trochaic
which allows the recitation to focus on the verbs. This further underlines how she longs to show
off her love to the world. One verb that demonstrates the infinite quality of her love is carve
which, more likely than not, is associated with carving initials on the trunk of a tree , usual for
young people during Rossetti s time deeply in love who profess their enduring love to one another.
The bulk of the second octet is comprised of an elaborate description of how Rossetti wants to
prepare by using a metaphor of a beautiful, extravagant platform as an expression of her love. In
this, she uses

Respondnt Identification Report
I would rule to revoke the Respondent s driver s license in this situation. Pursuant to C.R.S. В§
42 4 1301.1(2)(a)(III), if a law enforcement officer requests a blood or breath test to determine the
BAC level of a driver, the driver must cooperate with the request such that the sample of blood or
breath can be obtained within two hours of the person s driving. Under this statute, a policeofficer
with probable cause believing that a driver has committed an alcohol related driving offense may
require the driver to select and to complete either a blood test or a breath test. After the driver
selects a particular test, then he or she must submit to that test within two hours. Id.; People v. Null,
233 P.3d 670, 678 (Colo. 2010). C.R.S. В§... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We do know the officer was dispatched to the scene at 5:50 PM and the test occurred at 7:15
PM. In this situation, two hours hadn t even passed since the officer knew of the incident,
though possibly two hours from the Respondent driving. However, pursuant to Boom and
Stumpf, as long as a request for the test is made within a reasonable time and the test occurs
within two hours of that time, there should be no issue presented by these facts. In my opinion,
the officer requested the test within a reasonable time from being dispatched to the scene, just
over an hour after being dispatched. It is difficult to say with certainty based on these facts what
occurred. While we do not need the law enforcement officer to be present at the hearing, see
C.R.S. В§ 42 2 126(8)(a)(II), we do need the officer to submit all required documents and affidavit
mandated by В§ 42 2 126(5)(a). For blood or breath tests administered to a driver suspected of
drunk driving to be admissible in administrative proceedings regarding revocation of a driver s
license, the tests must be administered in accordance with health department rules and
regulations. Brewer v. Motor Vehicle Div., Dept. of Revenue, 720 P.2d 564, 568 (Colo.
1986).Therefore, in these circumstances I would rule to revoke Respondent s driver s license
since his BAC was well over the legal limit of 0.08 and because the officer administered the test
within a reasonable time. Even without the officer present to testify, there should be enough
evidence presented for a revocation of the Respondent s license pursuant to C.R.S. В§

cannot take so severe a Revenge upon him (47). Here, she starts off saying that he was not a
good husband to her. She said that he was the one who made her life miserable. Before she goes
into details about how their situation was like, she gives a brief description of her husband. She
states how handsome and tall he was, how he was a good dancer, and how he enjoyed sports;
however, she was not happy with him. Roxana states, ...I chose him for being a handsome, jolly
Fellow, as I have said; for he was otherwise a weak, emptyheaded, untaught Creature, as any
Woman could ever desire to be coupled with (48). Even though her father married her to him, she
says that she chose him because of his looks instead of his personality. She could have not
married him and lived a happy life; instead, she married a fool instead of a husband, and she causes
this, because she did not stop her father from marrying her to him. This event that happened before
her husband leaves her, signifies that her choosing this man leads to her unhappiness in marriage.
She was focusing on the external force (his looks), which led to her internal thoughts and
feelings that he would be a good husband to show off. However, he was not a good husband, and
he eventually left her. She did realize that he was not a good husband, but she did not know that he
would be the one to leave her. Therefore, she is the cause of this, because she chose him for his

Similarities Between Canada And Canada
When it comes to certain qualities and attributes of the United States of America and Canada, many
people residing elsewhere fail to tell the difference. The accents of people from certain parts of both
countries, for instance, are so incredibly indistinguishable that they baffle any and everyone.
Besides this one factor, they even share some comparable cultural characteristics, such as driving on
the right side of the road and cherishing the same basic human rights to the utmost importance.
Likewise, there are several similarities between multiple aspects of the countries respective
governments, including within their individual established frameworks, political systems, and their
divisions of authorities and duties. These could potentially point out a reason as to why Canadaand
the United Statesare immensely successful in their particular objectives, and are on their paths to
achieving their long term goals with difficult to accomplish, yet beneficial visions. After all, they
are both either on the way to becoming or currently are two of world s leading superpowers
(Financial Post). However, there is not just one particular infallible way to rule a country and push
it to further advancement simultaneously. In fact, each country works and functions differently,
which is primarily due to individual background and history. Ultimately, although Canada and the
United States of America are both nations that share similarities in various parts of their

How Electric Vehicles Can Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Electric cars are vehicles, which, instead of internal combustion engines, are driven by electric
motors and controllers. They have proved to be a good substitute for conventional vehicles and are
considered as a revolutionary innovation designed to protect the earth from the damaging effects of
global warming, as they work on the electricity supplying the integrated rechargeable battery that
can be easily recharged. Compared to traditional means of transport, electric vehicles seem to be
more viable and environmentally friendly because they do not need oil or other fossil fuels as an
energy source but the high cost of such a car and other important issues of exploitation discussed in
this paper make their use very doubtful comparing to the usual cars. The studies have shown that
electric vehicles can reduce greenhouse gasemissions to 6.12 billion tons annually (Westbrook,
2001). Even though they need mainly coal as a supply of electricity, they produce less harmful
emissions than oil, which is the main source of energy for transport modes, driven by gasoline
(Westbrook, 2001). With the development of renewable energy technologies that use the power of
wind or solar energy, people can get a clean source of electricity, which will make the electric car
more friendly to nature. In addition, the introduction of regenerative braking system will allow cars
to convert the force of inertia into electricity, thus, adding, extra batteries, which, in return, increase

Zopiclone Is A Drug First Developed By Rhone Poulenc Rore
Zopiclone is a cyclopyrrolone drug first developed by RhГґne Poulenc Rore (1, page 220) in the
early 1970s (2). It is classified as a GABA A receptor agonist, and is a central nervous system
depressant. Zopiclone binds onto subunits on the GABA A receptor and modulates the opening of
the chloride ion channels in the neuron cell membrane (3, page 1). By increasing the conductance
of chloride ions and hyperpolarizing the neuron, the frequency of action potentials is reduced. This
causes an inhibition of brain activity, causing zopicloneto have hypnotic, sedative, muscle relaxant,
anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects (4).
Zopiclone acts much in the same way as benzodiazepines when used to treat insomnia, but was
believed to have less adverse effects, and less potential for developing tolerance and addiction. As
a result, it was first marketed as a better alternative to benzodiazepines. However, recent studies
have revealed that it is unclear whether zopiclone shows improvements over benzodiazepines when
assessed on therapeutic qualities and addiction potential (5, page 1). As a result, both zopiclone and
benzodiazepines are included in schedule IV of the United States Controlled Substances Act (6).
Zopiclone is known by several brand names, such as Imovane, Zimovane and Zimoclone (7). It is
used to treat insomnia in adults arising from increased sleep latency, frequent awakenings during in
the night, and premature awakening (3, page 1). Zopiclone alleviates the symptoms of

business, which produced and marketed a portfolio of beverage alcohol such as scotch, vodka, gin,

Cuervo, and Malibu. This division was not only the biggest (with revenues of ВЈ5 billion and the
leading market share in the U.S. and U.K. markets) but also the fastest growing of Diageo s

operating margins and growth in total operating profits of 15%. The high levels of operating profits
reflected Diageo s strategy of concentrating on premium brands and pricing. (Exhibits 1 and 2

Diageo s second largest division was Guinness Brewing, which produced and sold beer to markets

David Hunger, Ph.D. for Management 370 College of Business Iowa State University (8/18/2005) HISTORY OF MANAGEMENTTHOUGHT AND ITS LEGACY FOR TODAY S WORLD But I m coming to believe that all of us are ghosts .... It s not just what we inherit from our mothers or fathers. It s also the shadows of dead ideas and opinions and convictions. They re no longer alive, but they grip us all the same, and hold on to us against our will. Henrik Ibsen, Ghosts Is there one best way to manage the activities of people in an organization? Many beginning managers (and even some experienced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What went wrong in this example? A number of very bright people spent a lot of time re designing a task to make it more efficient, but ended up with poorer performance, employee dissatisfaction, and probably higher hiring and training costs. The well intentioned managers at Hovey and Beard ignored the lessons of history. They introduced what most managers believed were methods to improve efficiency without considering the likelihood of undesirable side effects. It was these side effects, however, that caused efficiency to decline instead of increase. For these reasons, among others, this chapter explains the development of management thought and shows why the application of some still popular concepts and techniques do not always work out as planned. EARLY MANAGEMENT The practice of management can be traced back in time thousands of years. The Chinese bureaucracy was, for example, fully developed into a hierarchy of officials based upon a merit

  • 5. The Fear Of Robots From Star Wars The Fear of Robots R2D2 from Star Wars is a robot that helps the humans and is a famous movie icon. Decepticon from Transformers, however, is a widely known robot that is out to kill humans. These movies and other social inputs have made a two sided view of robots; either people support robots and are excited to see the future with them or they are against them and fear any kind of artificial intelligence. Robotics is a double edged sword; there is a considerable amount of evidence and experience to safely say that robots are essential to humans, yet many people have the innate fear that they will surpass humans. Rather than fearing robots, people should try to embrace the advancing technology and the benefits that could result from it.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, robotic technology is helping amputees by offering robotic body parts. This scientific breakthrough gives a person the power to grab things for themselves or get around without a wheelchair and continue with normal life. Robots not only help patients, but they also help the doctors by assisting with surgery. One example is the new DaVinci surgical system. This device allows the doctor to perform complex surgery with a minimally invasive approach through a separate console that magnifies the doctor s view of the working area. This new technique allows the doctor to perform the same work on a minimalized scale which makes it easier to perform tasks where the human hand is too big to work. This minimally invasive approach also helps patients recover from surgery since the incision is smaller, reducing the risk of infections. According to DaVinci s website, this new technology has helped over 3 million patients worldwide, which shows that many people are not afraid to trust these machines to do their job. Another very important field robots play in is the military. Today, more than ever, soldiers lives are being spared because of the robotic soldiers that are stepping in and doing the dangerous jobs that could mean life or death. The Army, Marines, Navy, and the Air Force are all moving towards robotic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Socialization And Immigrants During The Gilded Age The Gilded Age was a time period in the history of the United States in which a large number of serious social problems rose about. In the North and the West especially, this was also a time of rapid growth. During this time, a lot of immigrants came to the United States as well. To them, America was seen as the land of opportunity. In their home countries, the working conditions were terrible and they had very low wages, so they came to America in hopes of a better life. Little did they know, the United Stateswas not much better for them. Although, with a large amount of workers now in the United States, some skilled and others unskilled, it allowed industry to expand and consolidate. During the Gilded Age, industry expanded and became stronger over time, resulting in workers coming together and organizing themselves into unions and forcing the federal government to step away from practicing laissez faire capitalism. This time period really began when a new type of business organization came about. People, called entrepreneurs, would start their own business and use large scale production with the end goal of lowering the prices of goods and allowing them to make a huge profit on it. Some people during this time would call these entrepreneurs robber barons because of the the low wages that they paid their workers in combination with their terrible tactics to destroy their competition. Many business owners were also philanthropists. These were the people that donated the money that they made to good causes. One person who is an example of this is Andrew Carnegie, who supported the ideas of the Gospel of Wealth and believed that the more fortunate and wealthy people had the responsibility of giving back to society. Some of these business owners were accused of having a monopoly, which is having complete control over the supply of a product or service. Overall, this industrialization lead to more goods at a faster rate, which greatly contributed to the rise of big businesses. These businesses lead to a greater profit, which lead to bigger business, which eventually lead to corporations. Industry also expanded and came together in terms of economic practices. For example, one type of economic practice was a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Clownish Elements In Trickster Tales People read Trickster Tales many times during their lifetime and although they can be very different by the means of plot, setting, and characters, they can be tightly interconnected by certain, unnoticed, hidden elements that we as readers don t think much of as we are reading. The incorporation of these hidden elements in a story help to form a Trickster Tale, such as humorous /clownish elements, uses of anthropomorphism, and the characters use of brain over brawn. A story has to contain these elements to be considered a Trickster Tale and all of the tales are connected through these elements. The qualities are widely emphasized in the three Trickster Tales provided, as the three characters; Anansi, Master Cat, and Coyote, possess each of these qualities in their own style. First of all, the use of humorous/clownish elements is in all Trickster Tales, which the trickster uses to his advantage. Humorous/clownish elements can be found in, How Stories Came to Earth, as Anansi tricks the other character by stating, Fool, I am taking you to pay for the sky god s stories. For instance, the trickster, Anansi, fools the leopard by digging a hole and concealing it to trap the leopard inside, thereby making the leopard look ridiculous in order to obtain the sky god s stories. More of these elements can be found in, Coyote Steals Fire, in which Coyote uses all of his resources to the best of his ability as it is stated that, He distracted Thunder and made him blink. They are in fact young adults who are trying to build their success to go onto the next step in life, but just one mistake can ruin everything. What do you think the average American would say if you told them they have no Constitutional Right to Privacy, as privacy is never mentioned anywhere in the Constitution? That the information they share over the World Wide Web has little if any protection by or from the government. Of course our government is hard at work to modernize the form of weeding out the unsanitary to which some cenacles might call censorship. But the main question still stands, do we have a right to privacy and is the government violating our natural freedoms, or do we need someone to monitor the actions of our society to keep order. The question is as old as government; to what extent should the government influence our lives. When you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a very debatable topic and many parents have different grounds for the extent of their child s privacy. Some children are monitored by their parents, correcting every mistake and punishing every misjudgment. Other parents promote more of a free spirit and trust, to teach their child independence and develop experiences. Two are differing theories of parenting and both are different theories of government. One assumes that humans are naturally reasonable creatures and the other that humans are naturally emotionally driven and unreliable. So the question then goes to nature or nurture, and are humans reasonable or erratic? So we assume that man is a combination of both good and evil, and in doing so we assume that some level of privacy is in order but also the government must control those who diverge from the law. The question then Domich 4 arises, to what degree should citizens be left to themselves and what degree should they be monitored? The two extrema of this argument include the State of Nature, which has been previously described, and what is also known as the Big Brother structure. The idea that if man were molded to be perfect from birth, they would in turn live perfect lives is an idea that has been philosophized, debated, and dreamed of for generations of intellectuals. • 15. Analysis Of The Story Barn Burning By William Faulkner Freedom In the story Barn Burning, William Faulkner writes about a boy whose father is a crook and the boy s journey leaving his family. There are two main characters, Colonel Sartoris Snopes (Sarty) and Abner Snopes. The boy s name in this is Colonel Sartoris Snopes and Abner Snopes is the father. Abner Snopes feels that the law is always out to get him. So, he believes that his family should stick r=together no matter what happens. The story is set in the late eighteen hundreds after the civil war. The first scene of the story takes place in an old grocery store, in which they are holding a hearing for Abner Snopes. A man named Mr. Harris accuses Abner for burning down his barn, but he has no proof. The Justice calls Sarty to testify, but he does not speak. With Mr. Harris having no proof and Sarty not testifying against his father the Justice tells Abner that he should leave the country and not come back. Abner takes his family and leaves the country where he is not welcomed. This opening scene sets the stage for the rest of the story. This story shows that over time if we think that the world is out to get us we will only push those who are close to us away. After leaving the town the family camped in a grove of oaks. Before going to bed Abner called Sarty and accused him of not standing up for him. While Abner was talking to Sarty he brought up the thought that the people in the store were only trying to get at him. The next morning they got up and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The success of the Korean educational system is credited to being influenced through Confucianism, resulting in the educational fever that has encompassed South Korea. When Confucianism was introduced during the ChosГ»n Dynasty (1392 1910) it originally served as a way to maintain power for the upperclassmen. However, Confucianism began to replace the influence of Buddhism, leaving in its place, a national ideology and religion, largely determined politics, economy, society, culture, and education (Lee 3). In other words, Confucian ideals began to form the basis of Korean society during the ChosГ»n Dynasty, which continued into Japanese colonialism (1910 1945) and remnants of it are still present today better known as Neo Confucian. These ideals helped Koreans survive the turmoil it experienced as it was colonized, liberated, went through the Korean War and the 1997 IMF crisis. Since education had only accessible for the elite during the ChГґsun dynasty, its association with this drove Koreans to embed education as way to achieve upward social mobility. • 17. The Perceptions Of Victory And Defeat In Dominic Tierney s... In Failing to Win, authors Dominic Johnson and Dominic Tierney analyze perceptions of victory and defeat within the realm of international politics. These perceptions are examined through psychological, political, and cultural factors (Johnson and Tierney, pg. 1). The book is divided into three main sections. The first section focuses on two frameworks that shape perceptions of victory and defeat, which Johnson and Tierney call score keeping and match fixing. The second section delves into the conditions that may make people either score keep or match fix. Finally, the third section uses case studies to further the argument that psychological factors impact perceptions of victory and defeat. These case studies include: the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Tet Offensive, the Yom Kippur War, the United States intervention in Somalia, and the American war on terror. ... Score keeping is the hypothesis that people s judgements of victory and defeat simply reflect the material outcome, meaning that observers use material gains and losses to determine who won and who lost (Johnson and Tierney, pg. 21 22). While it can be difficult to measure the degree in which people score keep and it is not the primary way that people decide winners and losers, Johnson and Tierney argue that it is the best way to judge victory and defeat. The second framework that is used to explain perceptions of victory and defeat is match fixing. Rather than measuring material gains and losses like score keeping, match fixing is based on three categories: mind sets, salient events, and social pressures. Each category produces biases that affect perceptions of victory and defeat (Johnson and Tierney, pg. 51) For example, expectations whether they are high or low tend to impact the public s mind set during ... Right before the crew lands, one of the crew members dropped an acid tab. Francis uses that one line to create the screenplay for the whole sequence. In the first moments, the Camera captures hazy dark scenes of the bridge, with shadows lurking around, and bright colorful Christmas lights around the bridge. Francis makes this scene look as it was a circus, with vague distorted music in the background, and flashes of light to see the characters faces. This creates a window into what we see the soldiers experience we get, utter madness. Once the crew members descend into the trenches we see very weird and out of place shots. The first film shot is a group of black soldiers listening to Jimi Hendrix and smoking pot. The Jimi Hendrix back sound is also supposed to represent what the crew member that dropped acid is hearing and feeling. Coincidentally, Francis is also portraying his acid trip externally with the vivid lights, and explosions. The next stop in the trench, there s a soldier firing into darkness thinking that he s shooting at the enemy but it s really his own troops. In the Bosnian crisis, Austria Hungary annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina, against the approval of Serbia( Bosnian crisis of 1908 ). Because Austria Hungary didn t have the approval of the Serbians, the connection between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina was broken. Serbia was connected to Bosnia and Herzegovina because the countries had ethnic and geographic similarities. It seems likely that these connections limited the conflicts between Serbia and Bosnia, lowering the tension in the Balkan region. However, the annexation by Austria Hungary created a barrier between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia because the Serbians already had previous hatred for Austria Hungary. This separation angered Serbia to an extent where Serbia demanded a portion of the annexed land be given to them. Metaphysical Conceit in the Poetry of John Donne Essay Metaphysical Conceit in the Poetry of John Donne Many of John Donne s poems contain metaphysical conceits and intellectual reasoning to build a deeper understanding of the speaker s emotional state. A metaphysical conceit can be defined as an extended, unconventional metaphor between objects that appear to be unrelated. Donne is exceptionally good at creating unusual unions between different elements in order to illustrate his point and form a persuasive argument in his poems. By using metaphysical conceits in A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, Donne attempts to convince his love (presumably his wife) that parting is a positive experience which should not be looked upon with sadness. The speaker compares a frightful earthquake to the trepidation of the spheres, which is more powerful than an earthquake, but less harmful. The lovers movement away from one another is like the motion of the spheres and therefore it should not be feared. Donne uses the astronomical term sublunary to describe normal love and contrast this type of mundane love to their own. Theirs is a divine love which is elevated beyond simple physical bonds. When they part, their souls remain as one without a breach, but an expansion,/ Like gold to airy thinness beat (lines 23 24). These lines support the idea that their bond does not dissolve, but only changes form. Near the end of the poem, Donne makes an unlikely comparison between the couple and a draftsman s compass. This is one of his most famous metaphysical conceits because the two elements which are being compared appear completely different, and yet, amazingly, Donne is able to connect them. He explains that his wife is his fixed foot that leans towards him as he roams and straightens again as he returns, but remains his center. Her firmness is what makes his circle complete, [a]nd makes [him] end where [he] begun (line 36). The imagery of the circle and the spheres in this poem solidify the eternity of their love and the knowledge that the speaker will always return to the place where he began. Since the British Constitution is un codified and the rights and duties of citizens are not expressly codified in one central document. The classical British view of rights is that individuals were free to do anything that was not prohibited, the Human Rights Act fostered a change in the constitutional order, as it incorporated the European Convention on the Protection of Human Rights 1951 [ECHR] into the domestic law of the United Kingdom. Investigation Of The Cell Membrane Essay Mustafa Elgabry October 17, 2016 Period 3 Egg Lab Introduction: The cell membrane benifits the cell in many different ways and is composed of many different parts which help the membrane execute what it is supposed to practice. A model that represents these parts is called the fluid mosaic model. The model contains proteins and carbohydrates within a phospholipid bilayer that consists of hydrophobic tails and hydrophilic heads. All of the components within the bilayer play a role in the function of the cell membrane. For example the carbohydrates practice cell to cell recognition while the proteins transport molecules in the cell and back out. Proteins also have alternate functions such as intercellular joining and extracellular matrix. When molecules transport in and out of the cell through the membrane, there are two types of transport, passive and active transports. Passive transport occurs when molecules move with the concentration gradient. One example is simple diffusion, where the molecules transport through the cell membrane effortlessly moving from a high to low concentration. Then there is facilitated diffusion where the molecules such as glucose move with the concentration gradient but have to use a protein to pass through the membrane. Osmosis, however, is the diffusion of water molecules across the membrane, but the water molecules also need to pass through a protein because the inside of the lipid bilayer consists of hydrophobic tails. It s called febrile infection related epileptic syndrome, more commonly known as FIRES. I happen to know one of the few people who have this type of epilepsy. Her name is Kailee, and she goes to my brother s school. She was even in some of his classes. This type of epilepsyoccurs in school aged children between the ages of six and seventeen ( What is FIRES? ). It starts with a mild febrile illness that lasts anywhere from four days to two weeks. Febrile illness is when someone has a fever but they aren t sick with anything else ( Febrile Illness ). When Kaylee was at this point, her mom thought she had the flu. This is very common, as the flu presents itself as a fever in many children. Then, the child starts to have seizures. The seizures occur very quickly, and the child needs to be hospitalized immediately at this point. Seizures the children experience are non focal, meaning they have no consistent starting point or ending point in the brain ( What is FIRES ). The problem with this theory is that no gene has been found that could link to FIRES. Some scientists think the disease is a result of an autoimmune response, while others think the seizures are caused by a malfunction in the metabolic process of some cells. Both of these theories have little evidence to support them. FIRES could be a result of the febrile illness that comes before the seizures. This is evident when we analyze the political ascension of New Right figures Margaret Thatcher in Britain, and Ronald Reagan in the US. Thatcher, noted for her self described war on labour and Reagan for his trickle down economic scheme were both revered by our own Brian Mulroney, who emulated their efforts, facilitating enhanced corporate sovereignty in Canada. Since larger aircraft have greater capacity, as well as advanced technological features, airport management needs to make changes that cater to their operation. Although the arrival of these new aircraft has eased airport congestion and continues to meet passenger needs, it presents numerous challenges for airport management. The super jumbo is 400,000 pounds heavier, 11 feet longer, 41 feet wider and 15 feet taller than Boeing jumbo jets (Yeamans, 2006). This aircraft, then, requires longer and wider landing space, and airport management has increased airport pavement areas. Ultimately, family is what people make of it, and it can be the traditional two parents, one brother, one sister, and a dog named Spot, or it could be a woman and the kid she was left with. The term traditional familyrefers to the socially expected behaviors of each given role (for example, a mothertaking her kid to the doctor,) in the family. While many believe that this love she is expressing so effusively is about a man, I believe that it is about her new found love for God. Rossetti, after all, was a very religious person. The poem, surprisingly, has an exuberant, lively tone, a great contrast to her other works, which almost always give a sense of gloom and bleakness. Rossetti creates a structured arrangement, allowing the images to flow smoothly. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The octet is ended with her proclamation My heart is gladder than all these, // Because my love is come to me . She cannot think of anything more joyful than the love she has found. The rhyming convention set up by Rossetti facilitates the smooth flow of the poem when read out loud. Rhyming the even numbered verses through the first octet assists the nice roll of words to a lovely ending. The second stanza starts to express and convey her love through actions. This is apparent because of the verbs used in the octet, such as raise , hang , carve and work . These imperatives suggest an authoritative tone, because it is as if she is ordering someone to do these things. Backing that statement up, is the fact that Rossetti changes from an iambic meter to trochaic which allows the recitation to focus on the verbs. This further underlines how she longs to show off her love to the world. One verb that demonstrates the infinite quality of her love is carve which, more likely than not, is associated with carving initials on the trunk of a tree , usual for young people during Rossetti s time deeply in love who profess their enduring love to one another. In my opinion, the officer requested the test within a reasonable time from being dispatched to the scene, just over an hour after being dispatched. It is difficult to say with certainty based on these facts what occurred. While we do not need the law enforcement officer to be present at the hearing, see C.R.S. Besides this one factor, they even share some comparable cultural characteristics, such as driving on the right side of the road and cherishing the same basic human rights to the utmost importance. Likewise, there are several similarities between multiple aspects of the countries respective governments, including within their individual established frameworks, political systems, and their divisions of authorities and duties. These could potentially point out a reason as to why Canadaand the United Statesare immensely successful in their particular objectives, and are on their paths to achieving their long term goals with difficult to accomplish, yet beneficial visions. After all, they are both either on the way to becoming or currently are two of world s leading superpowers (Financial Post). However, there is not just one particular infallible way to rule a country and push it to further advancement simultaneously. In fact, each country works and functions differently, which is primarily due to individual background and history. Ultimately, although Canada and the United States of America are both nations that share similarities in various parts of their Constitutions, political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. How Electric Vehicles Can Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions Electric cars are vehicles, which, instead of internal combustion engines, are driven by electric motors and controllers. They have proved to be a good substitute for conventional vehicles and are considered as a revolutionary innovation designed to protect the earth from the damaging effects of global warming, as they work on the electricity supplying the integrated rechargeable battery that can be easily recharged. Compared to traditional means of transport, electric vehicles seem to be more viable and environmentally friendly because they do not need oil or other fossil fuels as an energy source but the high cost of such a car and other important issues of exploitation discussed in this paper make their use very doubtful comparing to the usual cars. The studies have shown that electric vehicles can reduce greenhouse gasemissions to 6.12 billion tons annually (Westbrook, 2001). Even though they need mainly coal as a supply of electricity, they produce less harmful emissions than oil, which is the main source of energy for transport modes, driven by gasoline (Westbrook, 2001). With the development of renewable energy technologies that use the power of wind or solar energy, people can get a clean source of electricity, which will make the electric car more friendly to nature. In addition, the introduction of regenerative braking system will allow cars to convert the force of inertia into electricity, thus, adding, extra batteries, which, in return, increase its ... • 54. Zopiclone Is A Drug First Developed By Rhone Poulenc Rore Zopiclone is a cyclopyrrolone drug first developed by RhГґne Poulenc Rore (1, page 220) in the early 1970s (2). It is classified as a GABA A receptor agonist, and is a central nervous system depressant. Zopiclone binds onto subunits on the GABA A receptor and modulates the opening of the chloride ion channels in the neuron cell membrane (3, page 1). By increasing the conductance of chloride ions and hyperpolarizing the neuron, the frequency of action potentials is reduced. This causes an inhibition of brain activity, causing zopicloneto have hypnotic, sedative, muscle relaxant, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects (4). Zopiclone acts much in the same way as benzodiazepines when used to treat insomnia, but was believed to have less adverse effects, and less potential for developing tolerance and addiction. As a result, it was first marketed as a better alternative to benzodiazepines. However, recent studies have revealed that it is unclear whether zopiclone shows improvements over benzodiazepines when assessed on therapeutic qualities and addiction potential (5, page 1). As a result, both zopiclone and benzodiazepines are included in schedule IV of the United States Controlled Substances Act (6). Zopiclone is known by several brand names, such as Imovane, Zimovane and Zimoclone (7). It is used to treat insomnia in adults arising from increased sleep latency, frequent awakenings during in the night, and premature awakening (3, page 1). Zopiclone alleviates the symptoms of ... AUGUST 6, 2003 GEORGE CHACKO PETER TUFANO Diageo plc Ian Cray, Diageo plc s Treasurer, looked out of his office window onto the busy streets of London in October 2000. The London based consumer goods company Diageo had recently announced its intention to sell its packaged food subsidiary, Pillsbury, to General Mills. Earlier in the year, Diageo also announced its intent to sell 20% of its Burger King subsidiary through an initial public offering during 2001, to be followed by a spin off of the remainder of Burger King after December 2002. If these transactions took place, the firm would be focused exclusively on the beverage alcohol industry. As Diageo s business was restructured, it was an opportune ... The largest was the Spirits and Wine business, which produced and marketed a portfolio of beverage alcohol such as scotch, vodka, gin, and tequila. Diageo s brands included Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, J B, Bailey s, Gordon s, Tanqueray, Cuervo, and Malibu. This division was not only the biggest (with revenues of ВЈ5 billion and the leading market share in the U.S. and U.K. markets) but also the fastest growing of Diageo s businesses, with sales growth of 8% for the year. More than 70% of sales and sales growth came from the Europe and North America markets. This segment enjoyed the largest profit margins of all of the segments, with 15% operating margins and growth in total operating profits of 15%. The high levels of operating profits reflected Diageo s strategy of concentrating on premium brands and pricing. (Exhibits 1 and 2 contain historical financial information for Diageo and its business segments.) Diageo s second largest division was Guinness Brewing, which produced and sold beer to markets around the world. This segment, while substantially smaller in sales than the Spirits and Wine Division, was a close second to it in terms of operating profit growth rate. Due to the similarity in the products and distribution channels for these two businesses, Diageo was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
