The Use of First Person Narration in The Cask of Amontillado
The Use of First Person Narration in The Cask of Amontillado
Edgar Allen Poe s tale of murder and revenge, The Cask of Amontillado , offers a unique
perspective into the mind of a deranged murderer. The effectiveness of the story is largely due to its
first person point of view, which allows the reader a deeper involvement into the thoughts and
motivations of the protagonist, Montresor. The first person narration results in an unbalanced
viewpoint on the central conflict of the story, man versus man, because the reader knows very little
about the thoughts of the antagonist, Fortunato. The setting of The Cask of Amontillado , in the dark
catacombs of Montresor s wine cellar, contributes to the story s theme that some people will go ...

The first person perspective allows the audience only to learn basic information about the
antagonist, Fortunato, and results in a very skewed perspective on the conflict of man versus
man. The conflict centers around the pride and honor of two men, and the lengths that one of
the men will go to in order to defend his honor to the other. Fortunato is portrayed as a conceited
and arrogant man whose weaknesses are enhanced by the fact that he has had too much to drink.
The conflict between the two men is somewhat one sided because it is probable that Fortunato
was ignorant of the fact that a serious conflict existed between himself and Montresor until the
very end of his life. What one man likely viewed as a friendly rivalry, the other took as a
justification for murder. This story has an absence of the man versus self conflict which is
generally found in a first person story because the narrator, Montresor, is completely certain of
himself and never has an inner conflict doubting his actions. The dark and eerie tone of the murder
story and its unusual setting contribute to the story s theme of defense of one s honor and
avenging wrongdoing. The haughtiness and conceited attitudes of the two men create an extension
of this theme in which Poe wants to show how far some men will go when they receive a blow to
the ego. The story s setting in the

Tobias Smollett s Peregrine Pickle
During the mid 18th century, it was more important to keep a good reputation within society than
to show how one truly feels. When the interaction between the men start it is evident how angry
and frustrated each of the men are, however they don t express these feelings towards one another.
Instead of expressing their true feeling they end their dispute with a sword fight which, in this time
period, is a socially acceptable way. In Tobias Smollett s novel, The Adventures Of Peregrine
Pickle, the interaction between Peregrine and Godfrey show how social decorum can suppress ones
feelings to act upon natural instincts. Even though Peregrine and Godfrey are formal when
speaking to one another, it is apparent that each other is withholding... Show more content on

When both men get ready to fight they helped pull each other s boots, and laid aside their coats
and waistcoats. With all the masked emotions within Peregrine and Godfrey they both wait to
take off their boots and coats before fighting. This shows that even when the anger and
frustration building up in the men they still prioritize social norms. Once Godfrey wounded Mr.
Pickle all of the emotions that Peregrine hid came to life. Peregrine was transported with rage at
the sight of his own blood, and returned the assault with such fury and precipitation. Through
the imagery in this quote, it shows how the emotions of Peregrine built up so much that they
eventual boiled over. He couldn t hold it in any longer and he let his emotions go the only time
that he could. A socially acceptable sword fight is the only acceptable time to let your emotions
fly. At the end of the battle Mr. Pickle was left at the mercy of the soldier. With all of the anger
within both men you would think that this would be the end to Peregrine s however it is not.
Once again Godfrey abides by the social norms and doesn t kill Mr. Pickle. The use of the sword
fight was to let both men s emotions go in an acceptable way to

Bethettes Monologue
I grew up dancing and tumbling at Judy Murtaugh dance studio. I was consistently surrounded
by bethettes at a young age. Growing up, my passion for dance grew, and so did my dream of
being a bethette. My dance teachers always encouraged me to tryout once I was old enough. My
first year of bethettes has been the best time of my life, although it was also one of the hardest.
During this past season, I lost my mother. Everything in my life seemed completely chaotic, except
for bethettes. Bethettes was the one thing I still had that made me genuinely happy and helped me
through this difficult time. The girls were so supportive and the squad leaders were so
inspirational. All of the squad leaders called me and came to the funeral. They constantly... Show

lead and support a group of girls and help them in anyway possible is a new dream I have
obtained. If granted this amazing opportunity, there would be a few things I would like to
address and change for the better of bethettes. The first being talking. Just in my first year of
bethettes I have observed talking and side conversations being a great issue at practices. It is
difficult to get all the girls to be silent and cooperative while learning or running routines. As a
squad leader, I would take initiative to not only set the example for my squad, but remind them to

Apply Face Powder
How to choose and apply face powder?
Powder has been living in female beauticians from the time of ancient Egypt, and for centuries its
formula has evolved from a powdered clay, chalk and flour to the fine texture with caring
ingredients. The powder can be used not only as an independent makeup tool, but also to fix the
foundation and corrector. Depending on your desire and choice, a powder will give you a slight skin
glow, tanning effect, or haze.
First, determine the type of texture: loose powder use at home and apply with a very large brush
all over the face; compact powder with a puff or sponge make a faithful companion on the road. If
you keep the sponge in the powder box, make sure that there always will be a transparent protective

If in doubt, take a transparent powder, which is suitable for any skin color. For oily skin, look for
the options with matting properties. Cream powder suitable for dry skin as usually its composition
contains oil or moisturizing components. On vacation it is recommended to take a powder with
SPF it will not prevent sunburn, but additionally protects against solar radiation.
How to apply powder?
When the powder is selected in accordance with all requirements and features of the face, the
next task is to apply it correctly and accurately. It must be remembered that the powder can be
used only if the skin is free from dirt and dead skin particles of the epidermis. Otherwise, all of
these deficiencies won t be masked, but became more visible. Before applying the powder,
moisten your face with the help of a day cream, on top of which a foundation is usually applied.
These cosmetic products have to be absorbed properly, and their excess must be removed.
Typically, a powder is applied with a wide soft brush evenly over the skin. Make up correction is
possible by special powder puffs, which must be clean and

animals in many ways. They could eat it or get stuck in it etc. Beaches and oceans worldwide are
filled with trash.
A lot of people are worrying about the world s oceans these days. In 2000, Congress passed the
landmark Oceans Act, an act that establish a commission of experts to assess threats to marine life
and resources and develop recommendations for a new comprehensive ocean policy.
Activists are angry at the White House s rejection of its own commission s proposal to take $4
billion out of federal offshore oil and gas money to fund an oceans trust fund.
Every year the Ocean Conservancy organizes an international coastal cleanup where over 500,000
volunteers pick up millions of tons of trash. Every piece of trash hurts the ocean and the animals
and plants.
Coastlines are popular tourists attraction. The more people there are, the more trash there is. Avoid
single use water bottles, coffee mugs and grocery bags.
Cargo ships sometimes spill garbage, and some of it floats out to sea from the shore. 80% of the
trash that ends up in the ocean comes from the shore.
There are many items in the ocean, sneakers, rubber duckies, hockey equipment, plastic bottles and
tops,

Integumentary System Essay
The integumentary system consists of skin, hair, glands, and nerves protecting someone s body.
There are many diseases of the integumentary system, two of these diseases include alopecia

areas of the body where hair normally grows. It only affects one percent of the population. On the
other hand, vitiligo is a disease causing the loss of pigmentation in certain areas of the skinlooking
like white patches. Neither of the diseases are completely understood by doctors and scientists,
but it is scientists believe that autoimmune thyroid disease is more common among both alopecia

Alternative Energies Essays
Do you have to pay to put fuel in a vehicle? I know I do and it s becoming more of a large burden
rather than just another small expense of living. It s safe to say that the majority of people
owning motor vehicles dislike the constant fluctuation in the price of oil and gasoline. The four
worst polluters when it comes to the burning of fossil fuels are the United States, China, Japan,
and Britain (Editorial par. 3). At the rate at which it is rising now, vehicles are soon going to be a
luxury because people will not be able to afford the price of fuel. One possible solution to this
problem, and many other instances that rely on the burning of fossil fuels, is the use of renewable

Honest In Shakespeare s Othello
Honest in love is one of the most important themes in Othello. Othello s love to Desdemona has a
lot of challenges that he has to defeat to be with her Othello finds love in his marriage but needs
more time to build trust, but his opponent works too fast for him to take that time. The immediate
attraction between the couple works on passion and Desdemonabuilds on that passion as she feels
for Othello. Although iagojealousy he was capable of manipulating, brain washing, and untruthfully
all others characters to satisfy his need for revenge against Othello.
From the very beginning of the story Iago manipulates Roderigo by saying that Desdemona likes
him and Desdemona may run away from Othello and go with him. He makes Barbantio angry by
telling him about their elopement then lying about the consummation of their relationship that
Othello and Desdemona have. He then leaves Roderigo to take responsibility for his Iago s
actions. For the time being, he goes off to advice Othello that Roderigo is accountable for telling

Imagery In Truman Capote s In Cold Blood
Truman Capote describes a town that I can easily picture, because he uses a lot detail and
imagery in his opening of In Cold Blood that allows me to envision a small town very similar to
the town I live in. Although our town isn t that well known it still receives some attention and our
school system wouldn t be described as Capote describes Holcomb s school. His structure and tone
builds the town as boring, empty, and alone. Until the end when he describes their school. A
complete juxtaposition to the rest of the town. Holcomb can be easily pictured as the boring,
rundown town because of Capote s use of imagery, structure, and tone. Simply an aimless

Who Is Dionysus In The Bacchae
Euripides uses the god Dionysus in The Bacchae in order to emphasize that humans need to
embrace irrational behavior in their day to day lives. In Thebes, Dionysus finds a structured and
ordered society, with their goal simply being to work as hard as possible, while Dionysus aims to
simply live to have fun and make merry. Due to the disrespect given to him by the Thebans as a
result of their differences, Dionysusaims to take revenge and force the people to worship him by
destroying their society and recreating it in his image. Dionysus and Theban society are complete
opposites. Dionysus is considered to be the godof wine and merriment. He and his followers live

Despite Dionysus repeatedly trying to convince King Pentheus to see logic, the constant rebuffing
at every turn eventually leads to him giving up reconciliation and condemning the king to death.
As soon as King Pentheus says bring me my arms, attendants! and stop talking, you!, there is no
more talking to be done, and one can see that at this point that the always rational King Pentheus
has repressed the irrational, represented by Dionysus, since he is quite literally calling for his
weapons to kill Dionysus and his followers. (Euripides 809). Since King Pentheus has rejected
what Dionysus has had to say and called for his armor, Dionysus is left with no choice but to

Podlecki refers to this when he says Dionysus had told Pentheus, but he did not heed the warning,
for his final assault on the Bacchae is seen as a mad expedition which he is bound to fail (Podlecki

could defeat a god in battle. However, due to the fact that Pentheus has made the decision to raise
his sword against the Bacchante, he has exhausted the patience of Dionysus and has therefore set

Monopoly Vs Monopoly
You will never make friends by playing Monopoly, but you will definitely make enemies by playing
Monopoly wrong. Too often, playing monopoly with my immediate family has ended with tantrums
and tears and general uproar. But rarely have I seen the breadth and intensity of pandemonium
caused by playing monopoly with my extended family.
At first, it seemed as if everything would go without a hitch. Naturally, there was some drama
when choosing pieces, as both my cousin and my sister wanted to be the dog, but that was resolved
with only a minor headache. Later, however, the real trouble began.
It seems that the standard rules for playing monopoly are not standard across the country, and
especially not with a monopoly manual so long no one had ever bothered to read it. Not only was
chaos caused by confusion over when someone can buy houses and hotels (a controversy that
remains unresolved today), but the mere action of paying taxes ... Show more content on

Instead of a shout into the void, you suddenly begin having a conversation. If you believe that the
collective knowledge and understanding of the human race is larger than any single human
consciousness, then the combination of different understandings brings us closer to the truth and
closer to progress.
Miscommunication can certainly be frustrating and obstructive of the truth. The beauty of
miscommunication, though, is that everyone is able to add their own ideas and contribute, and in
doing so, change our understanding of the world.
While the spread of inexactitude can be incredibly discouraging and even sometimes life
threatening, it can also allow for incredible growth. I concede that there are times when such false
truths are not welcome, such as in politics, science, or language, but this miscommunication serves
as both a symptom and a catalyst for human growth in our changing world.

Analysis Of The Novel Three Plays For Puritans
For Mrs. Dudgeon as a flat character, Show used her to reveal anger in a different way. This
anger is not out of hate, but it is out of mothers deep feeling of suffering because of her dear son.
Saltzman said that Show in his book Three Plays for Puritans, was giving an example of puritans
by the character of the disagreeable Mrs. Dudgeon, a woman who bears with intensely
recalcitrant resignation . Shaw made a lot of contrasts between the puritanical Mrs. Dudgeon
and her son(Saltzman. Page1).Here Saltzman shows that the two characters of both the mother
and the son are extremely different, which made Mrs. Dudgeon always angry and refused to
forgive her son. Shaw writes of the severe Puritanism of Mrs. Dudgeon and how her dubious
piety (a mask for hatred and hypocrisy) naturally leads her son, Dick (Richard) Dudgeon, to
dissent, which in turn reveals his true adherence to Christian values. But this tale of familial
rebellion in eighteenth century America has a distinctly modern tenor(Sagittarius. Page1). Mrs.
Dudgeon s double faces made her son away of her, that she refused to fight against the English
colonizers out of fear that they could be hanged just like Richard s uncle. This made Richard
angry and left this hypocrisy and go away of his family. MRS. DUDGEON (bursting into dry angry
tears). Well, I do think this is hard on me very hard on me. His brother, that was a disgrace to us all

An Article On The World Anti Doping Agency
On June 9th, 2016, an article written by ESPN Senior Writer, Darren Rovell, was published on
ESPN.com regarding Maria Sharapova s two year suspension over a positive doping test result
(Rovell, 2016). Maria Sharapova, the highest paid female athlete today, announced in March 2016
that she tested positive for taking meldonium, a banned substance that was recently added to the
World Anti DopingAgency s (WADA) prohibited substance list. Initially, the International Tennis
Federation(ITF) suspended Sharapova for two years but after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration
for Sport (CAS) by the Sharapova team, the Russian tennisstar s suspension was reduced to 15
months and she can return to competition in April 2017. Meldonium is a heart drug that is
available for purchase over the counter in Russia. This drug is believed to help the body produce
energy in a more efficient manner. Sharapova was unintentionally committing a doping violation,
which is the ethical issue in this situation. She had been taking meldonium since 2006 to help her
manage multiple health problems. Sharapova however, was not the only athlete that tested positive
for meldonium. There were around 172 athletes in total, 40 whom were Russian that also failed a
drug test for taking meldonium. This affected Russia s attendance in the Rio Olympic Games as a
number of athletes were banned from participating in the Games for their meldonium intake.

Mental Deterioration Of Alzheimer s Disease
I want to tell you how much I miss my mother. Bits of her are still there. I miss her most when I
m sitting across from her, (Crowley, Candy. October 21st, 2014). This quote refers specifically to
Alzheimer s, which is defined as progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old
age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain. It is the most common cause of premature
senility. However, Alzheimer s is merely only a form of many debilitating diseases under the
umbrella of Dementia, defined as a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by
brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired
reasoning. Some examples of these disorders include: Vascular dementia, Frontotemporal dementia
(Pick s disease), Creutzfeldt Jakob disease, and of course as was previously for mentioned,
Alzheimer s disease. Each form of dementia will be discussed in depth including their symptoms,
treatments, and their histories.
Vascular dementia is a decline in thinking skills caused by conditions that block or reduce blood
flow to the brain, depriving brain cells of vital oxygen and nutrients. Conditions that can block
blood flow to the brain are generally transient ischemic attacks (TIA s) or strokes. When these
occur, often major brain blood vessels are damaged and blocked causing effects on personality,
ways of thinking and problem solving, and generally can coexist with changes linked with other
types of dementia.

Growing up it is common to come across some kind of superhero that completely fascinates us,

The Conflict Between Judaism And The Hellenistic And Roman...
As dissimilar as they were, the encounter between Judaism and the Hellenistic and Roman worlds
with the latter taking on much of what the Greeks stood for should not be considered as a clash
between civilizations. Doing so, I believe, would render a complex society and a dynamic process
into an absolute and a static one. The postexilic period had obviously brought Jews into contact and
in activity with the surrounding non Jewish communities in which they now lived; however, this
social and commercial interaction with the non Jews was enhanced, like never before, with the
emergence of the Greco Roman eras. The Jews often managed to retain control over their own
internal affairs and found favor before various rulers, but pagan ritual, idolatry, and Greco Roman
philosophies became almost impossible to avoid.
These new realities posed a serious challenge to Judaism and Alexander the Great s idea of uniting
the world by pushing for a common language and culture, Homonoia, only served to accelerate and
intensify this challenge. Yet, the very nature of this Hellenic culture would, itself, allow the Judean
society to establish various paths of accommodation to the conquerors. Thus, in reality, Hellenism
was but a framework that enabled Judaism to flourish within a new setting without compromising
its indigenous and unique character. The translation of the Scriptures into Greek, precisely because
the Hellenized Jews were unable to read it in Hebrew, is an example of

Integration Of Media And Digital Media
Integration can be viewed from five aspects. The first aspect involves the integration of media
which comprises a mix of traditional media and digital media. The second integration is based on
the communication methods; these are the promotional methods used and include the traditional
methods, digital methods and word of mouth interactions and communications. The third
integration is based on the time the communicationhappens and interaction possibilities. This
further accounts for static and dynamic communications. The fourth integration seeks to explain the
actors and their roles in the IMC process, these actors are the consumers as well as the
organizations. The fifth integration is based on content creation, seeks to explain that IMC is based
on communications which are consumer generated versus marketingcontent created by the
organizations.
1. Introduction
Major developments in the information technology in the global economy have facilitated the
success and have also become a core function of both economic and social lives. With these
developments in social media marketing it s possible to talk with the consumer as opposed to the
traditional talking at them. This creates a reputation. New media technologies which include the
internet, e commerce, social networking among others have revolutionized how people interact
with the world as well as with each other. Traditional media has always been aimed at reach. Even

who their adored ones really are besides what is normally perceived of them. Throughout the
story Winterbourne could not figure out Daisy as he tried to analyze all the unusual aspects of her
character. Winterbourne becomes infatuated by Daisy, confused by her mixture of innocence and
crudity, (James 520) and mixture of audacity and puerility. (James 533). On the other hand,
Waythorn becomes a bit curious as to who Alice really is now or was during her past two
husbands who aren t nearly as bad as Alice had informed him. Although Winterbourne is not
married like Waythorn, Winterbourne desires Daisy a great deal but he is humble enough to avoid
being disparate especially when she is accompanied by Mr. Giovanelli. Compared to Winterbourne,
Waythorn could not bear to think that she had, in the background of her life, a phase of existence
so different from anything with which he had connected her. (Wharton 1032). Although The Other
Two ends much better than Daisy Miller, thanks to Mrs. Miller, Winterbourne learned that Daisy
really did care about him. As for the very ending of both stories, The Other Two ends with

Legion operated under the guise of a veteran s rights society. The men, initially approached Butler
to speak at a nearing meeting; they explained that they were hoping that Butler s speech would
persuade the others members that they needed to remove the current management something that
could be called conditioning or a sort of test. Even though Butler listened to what they had to say,
he had refused on the grounds that he did not want to interfere. Coming up with a new plan the
two men approached Butler again, this time discreetly offering him $100,000 in bank deposits.
After Butler arrived, in the spectator gallery the Legionnaires were to leap to their feet demanding

Healthcare and the Feminization of Poverty: What examples have you observed
The meaning of disparities is often linked to racial or ethnic disparities, although there are many
others disparities to consider in today s society. These disparities such as income, education,
transportation, housing all have influenced the meaning of disparities. Minorities groups such as

Abortion Should Not Be Legal
There must be a point in which the law acknowledges a life in all stages of development.
Allowing late term abortion is taking away the rights of life to healthy babies. An abortion can be
carried out any where from thirteen to thirty nine weeks. Some doctors say that late term abortions
are only done when medically necessary. However, there is evidence to prove that this is not
always the case. In order to save healthy babies lives, late term abortionneeds to be illegal unless it
is truly a medical emergency. There are supposed to be laws in place to make sure that late term
abortions are done only when the mothers health is at risk. However, these laws are so cryptic, that
when using the word health, almost any medical issue a mother or their unborn baby has, can
qualify for an abortion. The laws also suggest, that at any point during a woman s pregnancyshe
may have an abortion. Ron Fitzsimmon, the Executive Director of the National Coalition of
abortion, confessed that most partial births or late term abortions were done on completely healthy
babies and mothers.
In addition, three out of four abortions that were done by abortionist, Dr.Tiller, were preformed on
teens who were in denial of their pregnancy. Until the teens could no longer hide their condition
from their parents, they proceeded with an abortion with out any real medical reasoning. Also,

In A Midsummer Night s Dream, William Shakespeare heavily expresses the distinct characteristics
of Demetrius and Helena through the direct and indirect characterizations that affect them in the
play.
Demetrius character is best emphasized, directly and indirectly, through the dialogue and actions of
himself and those around him. In Act One, Scene One, after Egeus explains to King Theseus that
he wants his daughter, Hermia, to marry Demetrius instead of Lysander, Demetrius demands that
Lysander relinquish his love and control over Hermia because marrying her is his certain right .

Helena is first introduced storming past Hermia and Lysander, being quick to accuse Hermia of
stealing Demetrius love from her. Helena s lengthy response, use of exclamations, sarcastic and
whiney tone, and admitted jealousy, portray her perfectly. In fact, the audience better comes to
understand the character in her following monologue containing phrases such as: ...how happy
some o er other some can be! Through Athens I am thought to be as fair as she ; ...he hailed
down oaths that he was only mine... heat from Hermia...dissolved, and showers of oaths did
melt ; I will go tell him of fair Hermia s flight...if I have thanks, it is a dear expense. This shows
that Helena isn t just a jealous friend, but a hurt girl with low self esteem; she is desperate to
have love and happiness again to extent of giving Demetrius what he wants at the expense of
her friends wellbeing. Despite the late hours, dangers of the night, and Demetrius annoyance
with her, Hermia expresses her desperation and relentless love for him by proclaiming ...you
[Demetrius] draw me, you hard hearted adamant , I love you the more , and ... spurn me, strike
me...only give me leave... to follow you . Humorously enough, even when Demetrius does not
grant Helena permission, she still devotedly follows him. Due to the constant flow of insults and
abuses from Demetrius, Helena s character is pushed to the point where she wallows in self pity
and despair as well as further compare her darker, less attractive complexion to Hermia s. When
Lysander awakens under a love spell and professes his undying love for her, she runs away in
distress believing he is implementing a cruel joke on her. When Demetrius follows in the same
love struck manner, she becomes exasperated and falls further into her self pity. Helena s tone even

Overview of Comcast
1. Given the current situation and the threats facing TiVo, the chief executives must rapidly decide
upon the most favorable course of action. The decision is rather difficult to make for the simple
reason that each of the three alternatives stand alone, tie up with Comcast or third, content
distribution reveals both benefits as well as limitations. However, given the existent constraints, the
second solution seems the most adequate one for the following advantages it creates:
Comcast is the largest cable provider in the United States meaning that the alliance would generate
increased access to a wider customer palette this means that TiVo would make its presence felt in
the homes of millions of new consumers, managing as such to increase organizational profits, the

weakness of this alternative for the simple reason that it implies additional costs. Nonetheless, the
advantages of the endeavor outweigh the costs. In this line of thoughts, given that the TiVo

How Did Thomas Paine Use Ethos In The Crisis No 1
No Paine, No Gain Heralded as the leader of a new age of philosophy and eventual rebellion,
Thomas Paine gave way to the birth of America and its subsequent constitution. Presenting his
views in The Crisis, No 1, he explicitly petitions for a call to arms and separation from the
motherland. His associate Patrick Henry wrote the Virginia Convention, detailing a similar
argument for independence, albeit to a lesser impact on American colonists. The Crisis, No 1 is
more persuasive than the Virginia Convention because its author employs logos and pathos to
push Americans to continue the fight against Britain. To begin with, Paine uses a multitude of
logos specific arguments. Toward the end of the piece he describes the present army which gives
the readers a justified hope in the American militia. He writes, ВЁOnce more we are again
collected and collecting; our new army at both ends of the continent is recruiting fast, and we shall

General Haig Study Guide
General Haig Assessment.
Douglas Haig was a British general during the First World War. He first commissioned into the
7th Queen s Own Hussars in 1885, and was made a Field Marshall in 1917. He held numerous
positions of command, and was the commander of the British Empire s forces at the Battle of the
Somme. The Battle of the Somme was fought from the 1st of July 1916 to the 18th of November
the same year, and the tactics used by Haig (such as walking towards the enemy, the war of
attrition etc remain very controversial to this day. The Battle of the Somme was fought the relieve
the French forces at Verdun by attacking the Germans north of Verdun, therefore forcing Germany
to move some of their men away from Verdun and relieving the French. Allied forces won 7 miles
of ground, and the British lost 481,842 fighting men.
The different interpretations I will discuss are John Terraine s, Alan Clarke s and Lloyd George s.
These views of Haig may have changed over time due to the political affiliation of the historian, the
time period that the historian wrote in and general bias.
The first interpretation that I will cover is the one created by military historian John Terraine.
Terraine suggested that Haig was an effective battle commander and planner. This interpretation
was developed because Terraine was primarily a military historian, and focused on reading Haig s
military dispatches as his sources, which obviously included battle plans and orders only, free from

Functionalism And Functionalism Of Functionalism
AFunctionalism is the theory that what makes something a mental state depends on its function or
role in the cognitive system, instead of its internal constitution. To put it another way, functionalism
holds that mental states correspond to functional states. Functionalism is the offspring of both
identity theory and behaviorism, and comes in a few different flavors. For example, there is
machine functionalism, psycho functionalism, analytic functionalism, role functionalism and
realizer functionalism. Furthermore, while some forms of functionalism identify mental states with
functional states, other forms associate mental states with the physical states that play those
particular functional roles. Developed in the 1960s, the three founders of functionalism include
Hilary Putnam (machine functionalist), David Armstrong (analytic functionalist), and David Lewis
(analytic functionalist). Further elaborating on functionalism, a functionalist theory could attribute
the mental state of pain to be caused by bodily injury, which, in turn, produces the belief that
something is wrong, which creates the desire to no longer be in pain, which also leads to wincing
and moaning. This is different from behaviorism, which would equate the mental state of pain with
the act of wincing and moaning. According to this, only those things with internal states that play
certain roles are capable of being in pain . So, if we suppose that there is some distinctive type of
neural activity

Alex recovered after sometime, but his mother died. He and his brother, James Hamilton Jr., were

While he didn t have a very strong hand in writing the Constitution, he did influence it. With John
Jay and James Madison, they wrote the Federalist, later changed to The Federalist Papers. It was a
compilation of essays defending the new Constitution. John Jay wrote five essays, James Madison
wrote 28, and Hamilton wrote the other 51 essays. As you know, when George Washington was
elected president in 1789, he appointed Alex as the first treasury secretary. While he was the
treasury secretary, he butted heads with many of the cabinet members. Hamilton believed that the
Constitution gave him authority to create economic policies that strengthened the government. He
had the federal government assume state debts, instituted a federal system for tax collection and
would help the United States establish credit with other nations. People were outraged by his
suggestions, until a dinner with James Madison. They made a compromise on June 20, 1790.
Hamilton agreed that a place near Potomac would be made into the Capital of the Nation, and
Madison said that he would stop blocking Congress. Alexander stepped down from the position in

Nurse Malpractice
The nursing profession is very challenging and demanding. As a nurse, you must be dedicated,
reliable and trustworthy. When a nurse enters into a critical care unit there is more responsibility
placed on him or her. It is the job of the nurse to uphold professional competence. Failure to do so
may result in malpractice. According to Finkelman and Kenner (2016) malpractice is an act or
continuing conduct of a professional that does not meet the standard of professional competence
and results in provable damages to the patient (p. 185). In order to have a successful lawsuit filed,
there are four criteria that must be met. First, there must have been a nursepatient relationship,
where the nurse provided care. Second, the nurse... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The New Technology Of Cell Phones
A modern craze now is the new technology of cell phones. Everyone feels that they need them at
almost every moment of the day. It may be normal in social life, but in the business world, this
may cause a problem. With people glued to their cell phones, it is tough for anyone to really
focus on anything. From Samsung, iOS, iPhone, LG, to Nokia, everyone is after the newest
trends in the social world of technology. Some may feel the need to compete with one another to
see whom has the better model. As fun and competitive as it may be, this could be a weakness in
their professional life. Not only do people feel the need to get the next big thing, they have to
use it at all time. Even when the timing is not right at all. They can be far too attached. It is as if
their phones rule their lives without most realizing it. Time and time again, people choose to
make everything about themselves known to everyone else via social media sites. Those user
have to tell everyone else everything that is happening to them at that moment. If not themselves,
they will spend the word of news they have just received, be it humble event or unruly rumor. To
fit in at that moment, people will post anything. Via the popular cell phone they are sporting,
everything is revealed to all. Even about their professional live, though they are not as engaged in
it as they are their blogs and post. Some may try to put the phone down, but find it quite difficult.

Fallacious Arguments In the Declaration of Independence...
Fallacious Arguments in the Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is among the most profoundly interpreted and fiercely discussed
documents in modern history. Most likely because of its rhetorical style and numerous fallacious
arguments that are found. The colonists use of persuasion to influence by using repetition to achieve
their means. The Declaration of Independence is what 56 colonists saw as a logical course of
action. What you must ask yourself is: What was considered logical in 1776?
The rhetorical style uses persuasive ideals in the use of language. For example, in the first sentence
of the second paragraph, the parallel structure and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The primarily fallacious argument is that of general rule, assuming that something is true in general
in every possible case. for example, the first sentence in the second paragraph that evokes a partial
truth that all men are created equal. When in fact the writers mean that only white land owners were
considered equal
because they didn t consider black men to be humans much less women to equal as well. So saying
We hold these truths... is ironic because it is in fact not true in their minds that all men are created
equal.
The second fallacious argument, as the Ad Hominem. Which is that of attacking of the person
instead of the his argument. This is because the list of grievances in the second part of the
document. The redundancy of He has with only judgment from the colonist point of view because
of course they are not aware of the the Kings point of view because they are not the King.
Therefore, the Ad Hominem is the correct argument in this case due to the attack towards King, not
his argument.
The affects of the the arguments have both negative and positive outcomes depending on how
you perceive them. There is the response of freedom to a free nation, and that is what we as
Americans celebrate every Forth of July, or there is the ironic way that all Americans are now
seen as equal to any other person. Either way you look at

Summary OfTeaching Students With Hearing Losses By Alice...
Teaching Students with Hearing Losses In Alice Ann Darrow s article Teaching Students with
Hearing Losses she states that it can be difficult to involve students with hearing losses in the music
classroom and in the regular classroom as well. There are a numerous amount of students with
hearing losses ranging from the ages of six to twenty one. About 71,000 of special education
students struggle with a hearingloss. A majority of students go without knowing that they have a
hearing problem. Although most people believe that a person must be good at hearing in order to
be musical, it is stated to be not true. The music classroom is actually a great place for students to
practice good listening skills. Since listening is a mental process and hearing is a physical.
Objectives for hard at hearing students should include listening to music, singing, playing
instruments, moving to music, creating music and reading music. Music should be presented to the
student s strength and preferences. It is also helpful to have students feel stereo speakers or
instruments as well as the use of kinesthetic movements. Alice Ann Darrow believes that involving
students with hearing losses into the music class room can be difficult but in the long run beneficial
to the student.
Darrow s article was easy to read and focused on the importance of how to teach deaf students.
Although I enjoyed reading it, the writer lacked to inform how students with hearing losses can
differ and how this can

Restaurant Scene Analysis
870532731 Essay 1 1.In order to clearly understand the bigger picture of why the restaurant
scene was not very diverse, I had to look back in history to not so long ago when times were very
different. Studying historical particularism allowed me to do so and therefore further my
understanding of what the underlying problems may be. Historically, the town was not very
accepting of social diversity and therefore the citizens are acting similarly to how they were raised
and implementing their recursive actions. This plays a big part on the social constructionism in the
area which explains how certain restaurants were perceived. An example of this from the article
was the 40 60 rule in which no more than forty percent of the people in the restaurant... Show more

The year of 2015 was very significant for certain individuals, but it was a year that affected all
Americans in some way or another. This was the year that Gay marriage became legal in all fifty
states. Prior to this monumental action by the Supreme Court, there was not a wide acceptance
of gay marriage within certain parts of America. Since then, not only have people been more
accepting towards gay marriage, but people are taking it a step further and examining gay rights
as a whole. This includes rights such as parental rights. The New York Times covered a story in
which a gay couple adopted a baby with intensions to raise him together. After breaking up, the
biological mother attempted to deny the other mother the right to raise their son. The Supreme
Court ruled that it would be inconsistent to deny a gay couple the same rights as a straight couple
in regards to parental care. In the recent history of the United States, the historical particularism
suggests it would have been thought nearly impossible for a gay couple to be allowed to legally
marry each other let alone have and raise a family. The ideology of communities within the United
States shifted from absolutely not allowing gay right to anyone, to giving them the same rights as
straight people. The reconfiguration of this idea stems from the change in social and cultural
constructionism. Symbols are constantly evolving and representing a new meaning which is how
social change happens. The symbols associated

Great Sexism Research Paper
Major League Baseball s change to the sliding rules has already begun to have a negative impact on
games. So now everyone is miserable. In only one week of regular season play, lots of anger and
aggravation with the rule surfaced from coaches and players.
After getting burned by the rule last week in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Blue Jays
Jose Bautista called it a bad rule. Toronto manager, John Gibbons had even more comments after
Bautista s slide into second was ruled a double play. Gibbons said, Are we trying to turn the game
into a joke? I mean, really. That was flat out embarrassing. Then went on to say something about the
future of baseball involving players in dresses. Great sexist comments are born from the world of ...

The MLB s goal is to prevent broken legs, and clarify the sliding rule for umpires. The officials
on the field that day said Tejada had not tagged the bag once the ball was caught. Utley got the
base and ultimately two more runs scored during the seventh inning of a decisive game.
Rule 6.01 (j) now explicitly states that the runner has to make a bona fide slide and should be able
and attempt to remain on the base (except home plate) after the completion of the slide. The player
must be able to make and take the base without colliding with a player from the opposing team.
The trouble that I have is, well, physics. It is kind of crazy to expect a player to slow their speed
down, or move a bit more to the left or the right, and stick the landing, when momentum rules the
moment. This is not gymnastics. Has the MLB heard of Newton s first law of motion? An object at
rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same
direction.

Pros And Cons Of A Living Constitution
In the United States, there has often been debate over whether the U.S. Constitution is a living
constitution. A living constitution is the idea that the interpretation of constitutional phrases should
take into account the contemporaneous society. In other words, practices and traditions of the
government have the ability to change and transform over time in accordance with the changes in
society. Similarly, there has often been debate in the religious community as to whether the
practices and traditions of the church have the ability to change and transform in order to better suit
the needs of its constituents. Two Popes in the Roman Catholic church, PopeFrancis and Pope Pius
IX, have published documents with opposing viewpoints about the church s ability to change and
transform over time. The aforementioned documents also highlight other issues commonly debated
within the church. Ultimately, Pope Francis favors a more progressive church, that is opento
change, while Pope Pius IX favors a church with more rigid guidelines that follow traditional
practices. Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, was published in November
2013. The document discusses several current debates occurring in the Catholic Church. First,
Francis discusses the dangers of a consumeristic society and warns that the current economy is...

Inter organisational relationships have improved as a result of an increased level of perceived
transparency. When a buyer allows a supplier to become familiar with the buyer s own operations, it
is referred to as transparency (Lamming, cited in Icasati Johanson Fleck, 2003). The use of e
procurement has seen an increase in transparency. Until just recently, transparency was considered
unfavourable (Lamming et al, cited in Icasati Johanson Fleck, 2003) however businesses are now
using it as a sign of their commitment to the supplier. Many businesses are now working together to
create technological systems that promote the free sharing of information. By increasing the
visibility and transparency amongst supply chain partners, businesses are able to demonstrate their
commitment. This helps build trust, which is essential for creating highly functioning inter
organisational relationships.
Emerging technology has made collaboration throughout the supply chain more accessible. Without
web based technologies the required level of collaboration needed to provide significant benefits,
would not be possible (Riggins Rhee, cited in Icasati Johanson Fleck, 2003). By using various
information and communication technologies, businesses are able to combine efforts on achieving
objectives that would previously be unattainable if alone (Mohr Spekman, cited in Icasati Johanson

Comparing Leadership In The First Avenger And Iron Man
Leadership skills are an essential element to the development of effective leaders. Some leaders
have natural abilities while others are thrust into a position of leadership and develop on the
way. Ultimately I believe great leadership skills are derived from values, beliefs and skills in
relaying those values and beliefs to the people around them. With effort we can all develop the
key elements to ultimately motivate and effectively lead any team to success. In this essay I
will compare and contrast two persons with very different leaderships styles and analyze their
abilities to effectively lead. Steve Rogers is the main character of the movie The First Avenger
and is great contrast to Tony Stark of the movie Iron Man . Both have very different
backgrounds, values and beliefs which ultimately translate to the people around them as they are
both chosen to lead. This compare and contrast will also span a series of six movies in order to
track the development of these characters as they mature and experience difficult challenges in the
eyes of their team. The First Avenger The First Avenger takes place during WWII. Steve Rogers is
a young scrawny kid who is convinced it is his duty and responsibility to fight in the war.
Unfortunately, Steve suffers from a host of ailments and is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Prokaryotes Vs Eukaryotes
The cell is the basic unit of life. Two groups are formed between living organisms, and those two
groups are the eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Even though all organisms have the same
characteristics of life, there are differences and similarities that are seen at the cellular level
between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Prokaryotes came into play around 3.5 billion years ago and
then the eukaryotes evolved around 1.5 billion years ago.
Prokaryotic cells only really refer to bacteria, while eukaryotic cells include animals, plants,
protists, and fungi. The prokaryotes do not have a nucleus or any membrane covered organelles,
but eukaryotes do. Instead, the prokaryotes have a nucleoid because they have a smaller, circular
DNA genome, whereas eukaryotic

markets. Underdeveloped countries in Latin America and Southeast Asia had valuable resources.
Hawaii had many sugar fields, the Philippines would be used as a coaling station, and in Central
America the canal was built to cut the distance to travel around South America.
Late in the 19th century, the U.S. would go to war with Spain over the mistreatment of Cuba over

  • 2. The Use of First Person Narration in The Cask of Amontillado The Use of First Person Narration in The Cask of Amontillado Edgar Allen Poe s tale of murder and revenge, The Cask of Amontillado , offers a unique perspective into the mind of a deranged murderer. The effectiveness of the story is largely due to its first person point of view, which allows the reader a deeper involvement into the thoughts and motivations of the protagonist, Montresor. The first person narration results in an unbalanced viewpoint on the central conflict of the story, man versus man, because the reader knows very little about the thoughts of the antagonist, Fortunato. The setting of The Cask of Amontillado , in the dark catacombs of Montresor s wine cellar, contributes to the story s theme that some people will go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first person perspective allows the audience only to learn basic information about the antagonist, Fortunato, and results in a very skewed perspective on the conflict of man versus man. The conflict centers around the pride and honor of two men, and the lengths that one of the men will go to in order to defend his honor to the other. Fortunato is portrayed as a conceited and arrogant man whose weaknesses are enhanced by the fact that he has had too much to drink. The conflict between the two men is somewhat one sided because it is probable that Fortunato was ignorant of the fact that a serious conflict existed between himself and Montresor until the very end of his life. What one man likely viewed as a friendly rivalry, the other took as a justification for murder. This story has an absence of the man versus self conflict which is generally found in a first person story because the narrator, Montresor, is completely certain of himself and never has an inner conflict doubting his actions. The dark and eerie tone of the murder story and its unusual setting contribute to the story s theme of defense of one s honor and avenging wrongdoing. The haughtiness and conceited attitudes of the two men create an extension of this theme in which Poe wants to show how far some men will go when they receive a blow to the ego. The story s setting in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When the interaction between the men start it is evident how angry and frustrated each of the men are, however they don t express these feelings towards one another. Instead of expressing their true feeling they end their dispute with a sword fight which, in this time period, is a socially acceptable way. In Thebes, Dionysus finds a structured and ordered society, with their goal simply being to work as hard as possible, while Dionysus aims to simply live to have fun and make merry. Due to the disrespect given to him by the Thebans as a result of their differences, Dionysusaims to take revenge and force the people to worship him by destroying their society and recreating it in his image. As soon as King Pentheus says bring me my arms, attendants! and stop talking, you!, there is no more talking to be done, and one can see that at this point that the always rational King Pentheus has repressed the irrational, represented by Dionysus, since he is quite literally calling for his weapons to kill Dionysus and his followers. (Euripides 809). Since King Pentheus has rejected what Dionysus has had to say and called for his armor, Dionysus is left with no choice but to become vengeful and consequently starts to lead King Pentheus to his doom. The critic AJ Podlecki refers to this when he says Dionysus had told Pentheus, but he did not heed the warning, for his final assault on the Bacchae is seen as a mad expedition which he is bound to fail (Podlecki 151). Dionysus had warned Pentheus not to do anything rash, because there was no chance that he could defeat a god in battle. This anger is not out of hate, but it is out of mothers deep feeling of suffering because of her dear son. Saltzman said that Show in his book Three Plays for Puritans, was giving an example of puritans by the character of the disagreeable Mrs. Dudgeon, a woman who bears with intensely recalcitrant resignation . Shaw made a lot of contrasts between the puritanical Mrs. Dudgeon and her son(Saltzman. Page1).Here Saltzman shows that the two characters of both the mother and the son are extremely different, which made Mrs. Dudgeon always angry and refused to forgive her son. Shaw writes of the severe Puritanism of Mrs. Dudgeon and how her dubious piety (a mask for hatred and hypocrisy) naturally leads her son, Dick (Richard) Dudgeon, to dissent, which in turn reveals his true adherence to Christian values. But this tale of familial rebellion in eighteenth century America has a distinctly modern tenor(Sagittarius. Page1). An Article On The World Anti Doping Agency On June 9th, 2016, an article written by ESPN Senior Writer, Darren Rovell, was published on ESPN.com regarding Maria Sharapova s two year suspension over a positive doping test result (Rovell, 2016). Maria Sharapova, the highest paid female athlete today, announced in March 2016 that she tested positive for taking meldonium, a banned substance that was recently added to the World Anti DopingAgency s (WADA) prohibited substance list. Initially, the International Tennis Federation(ITF) suspended Sharapova for two years but after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) by the Sharapova team, the Russian tennisstar s suspension was reduced to 15 months and she can return to competition in April 2017. Meldonium is a heart drug that is available for purchase over the counter in Russia. This drug is believed to help the body produce energy in a more efficient manner. Sharapova was unintentionally committing a doping violation, which is the ethical issue in this situation. She had been taking meldonium since 2006 to help her manage multiple health problems. Sharapova however, was not the only athlete that tested positive for meldonium. There were around 172 athletes in total, 40 whom were Russian that also failed a drug test for taking meldonium. • 26. The Conflict Between Judaism And The Hellenistic And Roman... As dissimilar as they were, the encounter between Judaism and the Hellenistic and Roman worlds with the latter taking on much of what the Greeks stood for should not be considered as a clash between civilizations. Doing so, I believe, would render a complex society and a dynamic process into an absolute and a static one. The postexilic period had obviously brought Jews into contact and in activity with the surrounding non Jewish communities in which they now lived; however, this social and commercial interaction with the non Jews was enhanced, like never before, with the emergence of the Greco Roman eras. The Jews often managed to retain control over their own internal affairs and found favor before various rulers, but pagan ritual, idolatry, and Greco Roman philosophies became almost impossible to avoid. These new realities posed a serious challenge to Judaism and Alexander the Great s idea of uniting the world by pushing for a common language and culture, Homonoia, only served to accelerate and intensify this challenge. Yet, the very nature of this Hellenic culture would, itself, allow the Judean society to establish various paths of accommodation to the conquerors. Thus, in reality, Hellenism was but a framework that enabled Judaism to flourish within a new setting without compromising its indigenous and unique character. Allowing late term abortion is taking away the rights of life to healthy babies. An abortion can be carried out any where from thirteen to thirty nine weeks. Some doctors say that late term abortions are only done when medically necessary. However, there is evidence to prove that this is not always the case. In order to save healthy babies lives, late term abortionneeds to be illegal unless it is truly a medical emergency. In Act One, Scene One, after Egeus explains to King Theseus that he wants his daughter, Hermia, to marry Demetrius instead of Lysander, Demetrius demands that Lysander relinquish his love and control over Hermia because marrying her is his certain right . Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Helena is first introduced storming past Hermia and Lysander, being quick to accuse Hermia of stealing Demetrius love from her. Helena s lengthy response, use of exclamations, sarcastic and whiney tone, and admitted jealousy, portray her perfectly. In fact, the audience better comes to understand the character in her following monologue containing phrases such as: ...how happy some o er other some can be! Through Athens I am thought to be as fair as she ; ...he hailed down oaths that he was only mine... heat from Hermia...dissolved, and showers of oaths did melt ; I will go tell him of fair Hermia s flight...if I have thanks, it is a dear expense. This shows that Helena isn t just a jealous friend, but a hurt girl with low self esteem; she is desperate to have love and happiness again to extent of giving Demetrius what he wants at the expense of her friends wellbeing. Despite the late hours, dangers of the night, and Demetrius annoyance with her, Hermia expresses her desperation and relentless love for him by proclaiming ...you [Demetrius] draw me, you hard hearted adamant , I love you the more , and ... spurn me, strike me...only give me leave... to follow you . Humorously enough, even when Demetrius does not grant Helena permission, she still devotedly follows him. • 37. Overview of Comcast 1. Given the current situation and the threats facing TiVo, the chief executives must rapidly decide upon the most favorable course of action. The decision is rather difficult to make for the simple reason that each of the three alternatives stand alone, tie up with Comcast or third, content distribution reveals both benefits as well as limitations. However, given the existent constraints, the second solution seems the most adequate one for the following advantages it creates: Comcast is the largest cable provider in the United States meaning that the alliance would generate increased access to a wider customer palette this means that TiVo would make its presence felt in the homes of millions of new consumers, managing as such to increase organizational profits, the quotation of the stock; improve relations between management and shareholders; strengthen the company s competitive position and market perception and so on. Also, Comcast is a technological leader and an association with them would further improve TiVo s perception within the DVR market as well as within the IT community Technological innovation the need to approach this matter could initially be perceived as a weakness of this alternative for the simple reason that it implies additional costs. Nonetheless, the advantages of the endeavor outweigh the costs. In this line of thoughts, given that the TiVo executives agree to undergo this process of technological innovation, the Comcast executives will fully ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. How Did Thomas Paine Use Ethos In The Crisis No 1 No Paine, No Gain Heralded as the leader of a new age of philosophy and eventual rebellion, Thomas Paine gave way to the birth of America and its subsequent constitution. Presenting his views in The Crisis, No 1, he explicitly petitions for a call to arms and separation from the motherland. His associate Patrick Henry wrote the Virginia Convention, detailing a similar argument for independence, albeit to a lesser impact on American colonists. The Crisis, No 1 is more persuasive than the Virginia Convention because its author employs logos and pathos to push Americans to continue the fight against Britain. To begin with, Paine uses a multitude of logos specific arguments. Toward the end of the piece he describes the present army which gives the readers a justified hope in the American militia. He writes, ВЁOnce more we are again collected and collecting; our new army at both ends of the continent is recruiting fast, and we shall be able to open the next campaign with sixty thousand men, well armed and clothedВЁ (99). • 39. General Haig Study Guide General Haig Assessment. Douglas Haig was a British general during the First World War. He first commissioned into the 7th Queen s Own Hussars in 1885, and was made a Field Marshall in 1917. He held numerous positions of command, and was the commander of the British Empire s forces at the Battle of the Somme. The Battle of the Somme was fought from the 1st of July 1916 to the 18th of November the same year, and the tactics used by Haig (such as walking towards the enemy, the war of attrition etc remain very controversial to this day. The Battle of the Somme was fought the relieve the French forces at Verdun by attacking the Germans north of Verdun, therefore forcing Germany to move some of their men away from Verdun and relieving the French. Allied forces won 7 miles of ground, and the British lost 481,842 fighting men. The different interpretations I will discuss are John Terraine s, Alan Clarke s and Lloyd George s. These views of Haig may have changed over time due to the political affiliation of the historian, the time period that the historian wrote in and general bias. The first interpretation that I will cover is the one created by military historian John Terraine. Terraine suggested that Haig was an effective battle commander and planner. This interpretation was developed because Terraine was primarily a military historian, and focused on reading Haig s military dispatches as his sources, which obviously included battle plans and orders only, free from any ... • 40. Functionalism And Functionalism Of Functionalism AFunctionalism is the theory that what makes something a mental state depends on its function or role in the cognitive system, instead of its internal constitution. To put it another way, functionalism holds that mental states correspond to functional states. Functionalism is the offspring of both identity theory and behaviorism, and comes in a few different flavors. For example, there is machine functionalism, psycho functionalism, analytic functionalism, role functionalism and realizer functionalism. Furthermore, while some forms of functionalism identify mental states with functional states, other forms associate mental states with the physical states that play those particular functional roles. Developed in the 1960s, the three founders of functionalism include Hilary Putnam (machine functionalist), David Armstrong (analytic functionalist), and David Lewis (analytic functionalist). Further elaborating on functionalism, a functionalist theory could attribute the mental state of pain to be caused by bodily injury, which, in turn, produces the belief that something is wrong, which creates the desire to no longer be in pain, which also leads to wincing and moaning. This is different from behaviorism, which would equate the mental state of pain with the act of wincing and moaning. According to this, only those things with internal states that play certain roles are capable of being in pain . So, if we suppose that there is some distinctive type of neural activity ... Teaching Students with Hearing Losses In Alice Ann Darrow s article Teaching Students with Hearing Losses she states that it can be difficult to involve students with hearing losses in the music classroom and in the regular classroom as well. There are a numerous amount of students with hearing losses ranging from the ages of six to twenty one. About 71,000 of special education students struggle with a hearingloss. A majority of students go without knowing that they have a hearing problem. Although most people believe that a person must be good at hearing in order to be musical, it is stated to be not true. The music classroom is actually a great place for students to practice good listening skills. Since listening is a mental process and hearing is a physical. Objectives for hard at hearing students should include listening to music, singing, playing instruments, moving to music, creating music and reading music. Music should be presented to the student s strength and preferences. It is also helpful to have students feel stereo speakers or instruments as well as the use of kinesthetic movements. The year of 2015 was very significant for certain individuals, but it was a year that affected all Americans in some way or another. This was the year that Gay marriage became legal in all fifty states. Prior to this monumental action by the Supreme Court, there was not a wide acceptance of gay marriage within certain parts of America. Since then, not only have people been more accepting towards gay marriage, but people are taking it a step further and examining gay rights as a whole. This includes rights such as parental rights. The New York Times covered a story in which a gay couple adopted a baby with intensions to raise him together. After breaking up, the biological mother attempted to deny the other mother the right to raise their son. The Supreme Court ruled that it would be inconsistent to deny a gay couple the same rights as a straight couple in regards to parental care. In the recent history of the United States, the historical particularism suggests it would have been thought nearly impossible for a gay couple to be allowed to legally marry each other let alone have and raise a family. The ideology of communities within the United States shifted from absolutely not allowing gay right to anyone, to giving them the same rights as straight people. The reconfiguration of this idea stems from the change in social and cultural constructionism. Symbols are constantly evolving and representing a new meaning which is how social change happens.
