Hassan Fathy (1900-1989, Arabic) was a noted
Egyptian architect who pioneered appropriate
technology for building in Egypt, especially by
working
to reestablish the use of adobe and tradional as
opposed to western building designs and lay-outs.
Fathy was recognized with the Aga Khan
Chairman’s
Award for Architecture in 1980.

¤ He was influenced by most of monumental architecture in
the pharaonic period and strongly influenced intellectually
by the concept of the vernacular arch. of the Nubians
¤ Main purpose was housing the poor in developing nation
by applying the concept he was strongly influenced by
which is the vernacular architecture of the Nubians -opened
up his mind to discover the true essence of the heritage and
being inspired by the ancestors work.
¤ His goal was to combine between a comfy descent
housing and a poor being-after all home is where the person
should feel comfortable at ease serene and cool now matter
what the temperature and circumstances outside.
¤ He developed his own ideas, inculcating traditional Arab
styles like the MALKHAF (wind catchers), the shushaykha
(lantern dome), the mashrabaya (wooden lattice screens)

designed and built for the homeless community of gourna,
Upper Egypt, which attracted international acclaim.
¤ One would enter a home made updated of local natural
resources with dome shaped ceiling and no electrical air
condition, to find a sudden peace and calm within a cool
atmosphere.

¤ MUD BRICK - low heat radiation, low cost, availability.
¤ THICK WALLS - high insulation.
¤ Small windows not facing the sun.
¤ WIND CATCHERS -air circulation, a pressure gradient
used to get away with hot air.
¤ QANAT -used with the wind catchers to cool the interior
air by deep cut canal in the floor filled with water.
¤ SCREEN -restricts glare of light.
¤ No use of RCC N STEEL -causes high heat radiation.
¤ Courtyard with partial greenery, to screen dust and sand

¤ vernacular architecture is a wise thought of generation
moulded by its culture and regions in which it flourishes.
¤ It's a region specific and cultural specific.
¤ Vernacular design is seen as a limitation by the
guidelines of region and culture or is it learning to live with
these limitations by the utilisation of its potentials to its
maximum.
¤ Therefore Vernacular architecture is result of factor that
frames it.
