Woman Writers of the Romantic Period
Woman Writers of the Romantic Period Romanticism (also called Romantic Era or Romantic period)
was a complex artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in the second half of the
18th century in Europe, and developed in reaction to the Industrial Revolution. In part, it was a
movement against various social and political norms and ideas of the Age of Enlightenment. It
strongly influenced the visual arts, music, and literature, but it had impact on education and natural
history as well. During this period, writers and poets were actively engaged in the creation of a new
form of artistic expression. The objective of this type of expression was to celebrate intuition, rather
than reason. It is believed that the greatest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A large collection of Anna Barbauld s works was destroyed in the bombing of London in World War
II. Anna Laetitia Barbaud was acclaimed for her genius and talent. Many writers admired her poetry.
She often wrote of home, of children, and of her faith, but she did so in an individual voice. Her
educational and political writing also reflects her independence of thought, and strength of conviction.
Clearly, she deserves more credit than she has received these past one hundred and fifty years. Joanna
Baillie is another notable woman writer of the Romantic era. Walter Scott called Joanna Baillie the
best dramatic writer in Britain since the days of Shakespeare and Massinger was a Scottish dramatist
and poetess. She was famous during her lifetime, and her plays were very well received. She was born
in Bothwell, Lanarkshire on September 11, 1762, in the family of James Baillie and Dorothea Hunter.
Joanna belonged to an old Scottish family, which claimed among its ancestors Sir William Wallace.
Despite Joanna preferred playing in the garden and exploring the nature, she received an excellent
education, and began very early to write poetry. In 1769 the Baillies moved from Bothwell to
Hamilton, South Lanarkshire and a few years later Joanna was sent to Glasgow to attend a boarding
school. In 1790, she published her first work Poems: Wherein it is

Fashion School Application Essay
As a child, I have always been a visually observatory person. Patterns, textiles, and fashion have
always been high interests of mine. My childhood consisted of many Barbie dolls as toys, and it wasn
t the Barbie dolls that I wanted to play with, but the clothes that I loved to collect and interchange
between the dolls. Creating different outfits for the dolls made me feel as if I was making my own
mark in fashion. As I grew older, begging my mother to purchase fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle,
and Harpers Bazaar were typical and became expected. While flipping through the pages of fashion
magazines, I was enthralled while examining the latest trends from celebrities and models. This is
what influenced me to want to work in the fashion industry. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Taking a Look at WESCAPE Development
The first subject that must be viewed before looking at the actual WESCAPE Development is the
demographics of Cape Town and further the Western Cape. The Western Cape is home to 5 822 734
million people; this would be approximately 11, 2 % (5 822 734 / 51 770 560) of the South Africa s
total population. Western Cape s population has grown from 3 956 875 in 2006 to 5 822 734 in 2011.
From 2006 till 2011, it is estimated that the Western Cape has received a net migration of 225 657 into
the province.
It is also been identified according to many demographic statistics that the Western Cape is one of the
main two provinces in which people move to. This clearly indicates how there is an influx of people
moving in to the Western Cape and how there is an increased demand of housing. It is also presumed
that the Western Cape will have a population growth rate of 2.6% .
In terms of the new WESCAPE Development, it must be asked if this project is another new type of
racial separating schemes, similar to the ones found in Apartheid. To determine the outcome of this
statement, the makeup of the Western Cape s population must be looked at in finer detail.
2011 Black Coloured Indian/Asain White Other
Western Cape 32.9 % 48.8 % 1.0 % 15.7 % 1.6 %
As displayed in the table above, the majority of the Western Cape s population is made up of Coloured
people. The reason we need to look at this topic is so it can give necessary evidence showing if this

Gender Roles In Theatre
Introduction
We decided on this research topic as a group after having been assigned the category of gender and
sexuality. I had mentioned to my group that I had seen a significantly lower number of men in the
theatre program at my high school, and this trend only seemed to continue as I reached post secondary.
My colleagues agreed and stated their own experiences of either playing a character of a different
gender in plays they had been in, or watching a play and seeing a clear difference between the number
of men and women on stage. This brought us to consider why this might be the case. Why are there so
few men in theatre? I then brought up how, being a film student, there never seems to be a shortage of
male actors for our films. My colleagues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We added a variety of professions and career fields, ranging from nurse to business executive
including, of course, film and theatre acting in between. We chose the professions to rate based on
what we as a research team considered stereotypically masculine or feminine, and balancing it out
with some careers we considered neutral. We were also sure to include a variety of fine arts
professions in order to mask our intention behind the survey so that it would be more difficult for
someone to throw the results. These were then randomized differently for every survey participant.
These results were used to directly answer our research question/ test our hypothesis. Anonymity was
ensured by the fact that there was no question asking participants to enter their name, age or post
secondary institution, and consent was achieved by the first question of our survey being a short
consent form. Had a participant decided they did not want to continue, their information would not be
collected and they could close the window at any

Pennies Lab Report
Pennies made before 1982 and the pennies that were made after them create a significant difference.
Pennies made before 1982 are made of copper (Warnick 1). Due to the change of the of the metals
over the time period it must of caused a change in the pennies mass. Therefore, the density of pennies
created before 1982 and the pennies produced today have different densities. Density can also be used
to identify unknown substances Density is defined as the ratio of mass to volume (Lab: A Penny For
Your Thoughts). The density of a matter is equal to the mass divided into the volume. The mass of a
matter or object can be found by using a scale. Furthermore, the volume can be found using the
method of water displacement. The purpose of finding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, how to physically find the density of an object by finding their mass with a balance and
finding the object s volume using the method water displacement. The purpose of the experiment was
to find out which metal is used to create post 1982 pennies. Pre 1982 pennies were made out of copper
but then the metal used for making pennies changed. The metal used to create pre 1982 pennies was
copper. Since the metal used to make pennies changed the density of post 1982 changed. The
predicted density was believed to have something close to the metal zinc. Which will show that the
post 1982 pennies are made out of zinc. During the experiment, the mass of the post 1982 pennies
were found using an electric balance and the volume was found by water displacement. The pennies
mass and volumes were recorded. After the recordings of five trials the densities was found of those
each trials. After conducting the experiment by trying to find the density of the post 1982 pennies. The
average density found after doing the experiment was 7.042 g/mL. The density of zinc is 7.13 g/mL.
However, errors may have occurred tampering the density that was discovered. For example, reading
the water measurement slightly wrong when using water displacement to find the volume of the
pennies or not placing the pennies correctly in the cylinder which could create air pockets .Due to the

An increase in PCL triol content caused an increase in the relative intensity of the symmetric
deformation of CH2 groups of PU films, observed in the range of 1475 1450 cm 1. Also, the
symmetric stretching of N COO and stretching of C O C bond in polyurethane are observed in the
range of 1150 940 cm 1. A reduction in the relative intensity of the main PU absorbance peaks was
observed in the samples after ultrasonic process, whereas the broad band in the region of 1100 1000

based polymer, this process usually involves three stages: (i) incubation stage, in which water
absorption occurs; (ii) induction stage, during which polymer chain is broken via ester bonds; (iii)
erosion, the final stage, wherein the water soluble entities (for example PEG blocks and oligomers) are
dissolved in the buffer solution, resulting in a polymer mass loss [22]. Therefore, the SBF assay was

to non corporate usage the performance of network degraded. The drainage of resources may become
powerful. As social networking sites widen into shared and streamed media. Malicious code Web 2.0

organisations, but social networking can make it very easy, and once the information enters the social
network, it is almost hopeless to retrieve it. Legal liabilities dealing with harassment, regulatory

form of attack, using social networking as a way to extract information that can be used to commit

Market penetration
Market penetration is the name given to a growth strategy where the business focuses on selling
existing products into existing markets.
Market penetration seeks to achieve four main objectives:
Maintain or increase the market share of current products this can be achieved by a combination of
competitive pricing strategies, advertising, sales promotion and perhaps more resources dedicated to
personal selling
Secure dominance of growth markets
Restructure a mature market by driving out competitors; this would require a much more aggressive
promotional campaign, supported by a pricing strategy designed to make the market unattractive for
competitors
Increase usage by existing customers for example by introducing loyalty schemes
A market penetration marketing strategy is very much about business as usual . The business is
focusing on markets and products it knows well. It is likely to have good information on competitors
and on customer needs. It is unlikely, therefore, that this strategy will require much investment in new
market research.

Mining Control And Reclamation Act ( Smcra ) Essay
Dirty energy production in the United States has disastrous environmental impacts thanks to a broken
regulatory system. Environmental devastation from coal extraction is unmatched. The most popular
form of coal mining is mountaintop removal mining, a form of surface mining which removes
mountaintops to reach coal. The popularity of mountaintop removal mining is due to the cost
effectiveness of the process; unfortunately, the only one saving on costs is the miners, and at the
expense of the environment. Deforestation; harm in aquatic communities; accelerated sediment and
nutrient transport; increased algal production, as well as possible human health impacts from poorly
regulated remediation requirements by SMCRA, results in gross environmental degradation. This
essay proposes an amendment to section 515 (the approximate original contour requirement) of
SMCRA; restoration should require the reclaimed area to have the same environmental utility it had
prior to the mining operation.
A brief overview of mountaintop removal mining and mine remediation processes will be provided at
the outset of the essay. Further, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) will be
explained in regards to mountaintop removal mining remediation. The aforementioned is
supplemented by a brief explanation of other related regulations. Lastly, judicial precedent will be
used to verify the utility of the proposed amendments to SMCRA. The positive environmental impact
that would result if the

Isolation In A Rose For Emily And Big Two Hearted River

Hemingway s Big Two Hearted River both deal with the theme of isolation, but have different internal
mechanisms that advance the story. Faulkner and his use of eloquent word choice, as well as a
profound influence of Southern local color gives the effect of a Michelangelo s painting where detail

Differences Of New England And Southern Colonies
As more and more Europeans moved to the New World, colonies were created for specific groups of
people. Colonies were created for varying religions, lifestyles, and economic reasons. The New
England colonies had numerous difference and few similarities with the Southern Colonies. These
differences created distinct features of the regions and the people who lived there. Due to the
geographic location of the Southern Colonies, their economic development relied mainly on
agriculture. Being closer to the equator than New England, the south received longer planting seasons
and also had good soil for planting. The Southern Colonies mainly produced corn, rice, and tobacco,
which were very valuable exports. Unlike the Southern Colonies, in New England the soil was worse
and often times the areas were rocky, often making it much harder to plant and even be profitable. The
South was very reliant on African slaves for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Naturally, they stayed this way, and their lives were centered on their religion. One of the New
England colonies, Rhode Island, even granted complete religious tolerance, a first of its kind. The
Southern Colonies were settled for an economic gain of the settlers. For example, when the colonists
first arrived in Jamestown, a number of them immediately started to look for gold. In the Southern
Colonies, there was little religious tolerance and the colonies were mainly Anglican and Baptist.
Religion wasn t central to life in the Southern Colonies but still influenced its followers. The presence
of religious toleration in the New England Colonies helped steer people of minor faiths to immigrate
to the New England colonies from the Old World and within the New World. The New England
colonists were usually more dedicated to religion, where the Southern Colonists seemed to care more
about economic growth and opportunity than practicing

The Dialectical Model Of Identity Formation
In Don s lecture, he discusses the dialectical model of Identity formation, which includes three
components or circles that interact. The subjective reality, the objective reality and Indigenous
objective reality. Subjective reality is the individual s identity that is comprised of someone s thoughts
and feelings. Objective reality is outside of the self, encompassing the culture in mainstream society,
such as institutions, history, capitalism and rules. The indigenous objective reality is influenced by
both mainstream society and Aboriginal culture. People s feelings and behaviours are likely to mimic
those of the urban people around them.
There are two process that occur, externalization and internalization. Externalization is the process of
taking a thought and projecting it to the objective reality. For example, an individual will externalize
their Indigenous culture to school by bringing traditions from home like dances and teaching them to
students. Externalizing can also happen from mainstream society to the Indigenous culture by bringing
what is learned at school to back to the family. Internalization is how the individual s subjective reality
is affected by the surrounding institutions through rules, norms, etc. Therefore, they internalize the
Indigenous culture through family traditions, and Internalize mainstream society through the media,
school rules, etc.
Early Europeans thought that it was impossible for Indigenous peoples to participate in the modern
world

Essay about Daniel Keys Flowers For Algernon
CHARLY
The book Flowers For Algernon , by Daniel Keys was written in 1961. Later, Richard Heynes decided
to produce the movie in 1968 properly called Charly . There are both similarities and differences
between the two. However, the differences play a more crucial role between the two rather then the
similarities.
One major difference between the movie and book is the events that took place. One example is when
Charly met Fay. This never happened in the movie. But in the movie, when he met her he let all of his
inner feeling out into the open and had a great time. In the movie he only went away for awhile and
even then he only had what seemed to be a few short flings. With Fay, Charly was able express

Donner s bakery he was never harassed by the new employee. This was when Joe Carp and the other
realized that Charly was back to his old self. Joe Carp roughed up the bully and got him fired for his
actions directed at Charly.
Another major difference between the book and movie is the traits and actions taken by the characters.
One example is Alice Kinnian. In the story, she is depicted as a quiet, non aggressive person, but in the
movie she is very much the opposite in character. For one, she never really made a move towards
Charly, however, in the movie, she is the more aggressive between the two. Also, towards the end of
the movie, Alice asked Charly to marry her and that never even happened in the novel at all. Charly is
another character who is given different traits and actions in the movie then the book. In the book, he
is a kind, warm hearted man who couldn t harm a fly. Believe it or not in the movie Charly tried to
sexually assault Alice. In the book he never ever would have tried to do such a horrible thing to Alice.
Also, he got very upset when he found out that he failed one of the tests given to him at the laboratory.
He could have cared less if he failed in the book. Charly s family is something else that was never
mentioned in the movie, and it s probably the most important difference of them all. It is the most
important because of the fact that when Charly went to visit his family, it brought to him a great deal
of happiness

How Did King George III Have Been Avoided
Do you know what would have happened if King George III was more reasonable and listened to the
colonies? The American Revolution could have been avoided. The British government could have had
a better and productive role in the British colonies and King George III could have been more
reasonable to the British colonies and not tax as much as he did. If these things had happened,
America would be in a state of dominion under Great Britain until they gained their independence in a
more peaceful way. If the British government had a more active role in the British colonies, the
Revolution could have been avoided. This is because if the British government had listened to the
thoughts of the British colonies, there would be less of a need for war, taxes, and other forms of
fighting. Had Britain accepted the Second Continental Congress s Olive Branch Petition, the
Revolutionary War could have been avoided (Sparknotes). Had the ministers of the British consulted
with the leaders in the colonies, there would not have been such an argument and problems with taxes,
etc. King George III was not reasonable with the British colonies. This is not entirely his fault, though.

Edgar Allan Poe Strengths And Weaknesses Essay
Strength vs. Weakness Edgar Allan Poe s short story, The Cask of Amontillado , can be categorized as
an American Gothic literary piece due to Poe s selection of elements introduced by the narrator, whom
s name is later revealed as Montresor, regarding the gloomy, mysterious, suspenseful and terror filled
atmosphere. These elements can be defined as tropes. Specific characteristics of the genre are depicted
throughout the plot by the narrations provided, such being the greatly spacious and empty palazzo of

Growth by Mike Lee, Yes. He not only believes that it will hurt local economies but that it is illegal.
He states that under the U.S. Constitution, Congress has the sole authority to regulate federal lands.
For public lands, Congress delegates that authority to the Interior Secretary in a series of federal laws,
including the Bureau of Land Management Organic Act or the Federal Land Policy and Management
Act (FLPMA). For wilderness designation, Congress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This article talks about the Wilderness Act that was passed in 1964, the enactment of the Federal Land
Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) in 1976, and the Wild Lands Policy in 2010. She discusses the
history of these acts and policies. The article describes how these acts and policies passed and the
different litigation that came from them. The Wild Lands Policy is described in detail in section V. The
article first describes the three ways the new Wild Lands Policy was to work. The first way was it
affirmed that the agency should consider wilderness values as an integral component of its multiple
use mission, identifying lands with wilderness characteristics (LWC) in its mandatory section 201
inventories. Second, the Policy directed BLM to use its section 202 land use planning authority to
consider designating appropriate LWC as Wild Lands, that is, lands that the agency would protect in
amended RMPs by avoiding impairment to their wilderness characteristics. Third, for project level
decisions in areas not yet inventoried under the new framework, the Policy instructed BLM to
inventory apparent wilderness characteristics, and then discuss the proposed project s effects to them
as well as measures to minimize those effects in a NEPA analysis. (Brumfield, v.44, I1) The article
then describes each area in its own section, section A is Inventory, section B is Land Use Planning,
and section C is Project Level Decisions. In section VI the Death and Afterlife of the Wild Lands
Policy is discussed in detail. She talks about how the policy sparked immediate protest and legal
challenges. In April 2011 the opposition to the Wild Lands Policy took full effect. There was a
congressional rider put into place that prohibited the use of funds to implement the policy. Then

Legalization Of Prostitution And Prostitution
Legalization of Prostitution Prostitution law varies widely from country to country, and between
jurisdictions within a country. Prostitution or sex work is legal in some parts of the world and regarded
as a profession, while in other parts it is a crime punishable by death. In many jurisdictions
prostitution is illegal. In other places prostitution itself is legal, but surrounding activities are illegal.
In other jurisdictions prostitution is legal and regulated. In most jurisdictions which criminalize
prostitution, the sex worker is the party subject to penalty, but in some jurisdictions it is the client who
is subject to a penalty. Prostitution has been condemned as a single form of human rights abuse, and
an attack on the dignity and worth of human beings, while other schools of thought state that sex work
is a legitimate occupation; whereby a person trades or exchanges sexual acts for money and/or goods.
Some believe that women in developing countries are especially vulnerable to sexual exploitation and
human trafficking, while others distinguish this practice from the global sex industry, in which sex
work is done by consenting adults, where the act of selling or buying sexual services is not a violation
of human rights. The term sex work is used interchangeably with prostitution in this article, in
accordance with the World Health Organization and the United Nations.

Military And Work 70 Week
Being in the military and working 70 hours a week is very stressful. If you tag on going to school and
having tests and projects due on a certain day life might even seem overwhelming at times. One of the
things i have always been good at is managing my time. I focus on the goals i have set for myself and
what needs to be done to accomplish those goals. However, i can t be studying and working 24/7 so i
have to make time to relax and reenergize at the same time. The strategy that i use to manage my time

The Paleozoic Era
The Paleozoic era age approximately 300 million years (542 mya to 251 mya). This time period
consists of two of the most important events in the history of animal life. In the beginning, multi
celled animals underwent a dramatic explosion in diversity, this resulted in almost all living animal
phyla appearing within a few million years. At the other end of the Paleozoic, it withstood the largest
mass extinction in all of history. This event wiped out approximately 90% of all marine animal
species. The causes of both these events are still not fully understood. Halfway in between this time
period, animals, fungi, and plants began to colonize the land, insects emerged, and the limestone was
deposited near the Burlington, Missouri area. During

Of God and Nature
Gloria Omole
1. There are two books that give me my divine stance: the one God wrote himself (scripture) and the
alternative for those who don t seek the bible (nature). Those who have not seen his teachings
firsthand know of him through his scripture. 2. The sun caused the ones that know him through
scripture to appreciate him; it was a miracle that was to be taken note of above all his other miracles 3.
The pagans knew how to read the word better than Christians themselves, although they read less into
it then those with faith do. 4. I do not forget to give God credit for nature, which is not the foundation

Fog In High School Essay
The fog hangs low. It s 7:00A.M., time for work. Exhausted, I climb into my car, careful not to
venture into the thick, white, fog, as it is still clinging to the ground. I turn on my headlights, and
slowly, make my way to Mcleston Elementary. I reach my school and enter it brace myself for a long
day at work. As I prepare myself for the lesson I notice a yellowed, aged, slip of yellow, frayed, paper

s Fundamental Attribution Theory And Cognitive Dissonance
Suddenly, an insect is caught in a spider s web, unaware of the spider the insect has a special defiance
weapon. The spider making a fatal mistake, miss judged the insect s character, and in return had
nothing to show for its hard work. This is similar to what one does when they miss interoperating
another s feelings and personality causing pain and no gain for the observer. New stereotypes, boxes ,
assumptions, etc. all have encroached on a person s worldview. One comes to see others in a whole
new way by theories like the Attribution theory and its Fundamental Attribution error, along with
Cognitive Dissonance theory all of which involve one s actions and attitudes.
One of the theories is the Attribution theory. Attribution theory is when individuals discover the causes
of behavior as part of the one in observation. This theory suggests that people are motivated to
discover the deep meaning of their behavior as that person makes sense of other s behavior. The
Attribution theory has three dimensions that help describe what a person discovering the meaning of
those behaviors and attributing them to different causes. Those three causes are internal or external,
stable or unstable, and or controllable or uncontrollable causes. Consequently, these causes have many
situations that go along with them. Briefly, internal and external causes ask whether or not that
behavior was specific to a character trait or was that action outside of his or her character and just a

Fiction and Reality Collide Through Corruption
Long before George Orwell wrote 1984, a man by the name of Lord Acton wrote, Power tends to
corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Orwell expresses a similar sentiment regarding the
future of political powers, more specially totalitarianism. A totalitarian society is a government that is
overruled by one major power, or person. Although the dystopian novel is merely fiction, Orwell
created it as a warning and expression of fears about totalitarianism. Big Brother resembled Adolf
Hitler in many aspects. When drawing parallels between the novel and an application of its politics in
modern society, it is as though Orwell foresaw the development of numerous dictatorships and corrupt
governments to come. The purging of undesirable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a totalitarian society, intelligence of individuals threatens the power of the ruling individual. As a
means of preventing defeat through intelligence, the government relies heavily on deception and
distortion of information. Although the Nazis were mainly known for killing Jews, Homosexuals, and
disabled, they also were known to oppress the educated, as well. Any intellectuals opposing the Nazi
Party were either deported or murdered. Those who remained were psychologically manipulated to
believe all information that was fed to them. Through propaganda, the Nazis created a negative image
of the Jewish people, blaming them for the economic and social problems of Germany and the world
(JFNA 1). They wished to dehumanize the Jews in order to make them look inferior. Through
dehumanization, Hitler hoped to spread anti Semitism and receive support in the elimination of rights
of the Jews. Much like Hitler s use of propaganda, Big Brother uses campaigns of fear and
manipulation of truth to gain control. INGSOC creates slogans such as Big Brother is watching you to
make people fear the consequences of resistance. Numerous times, Winston addresses the
impossibility of knowing what life before the Revolution had really been like because the Party
controls and regulates each piece of information about the past (Orwell 74). In order to eliminate any
potential threats, Oceania s government goes as far as controlling the people s thoughts, emotions,

The Consequences Of Recidivism
Americans today tend to associate recidivism with individuals who continuously see prison as a
revolving door and continues to re offend. The term refers to the act of committing another crime after
a person has already received punishment for previous offenses, in other words, relapse. The term is
also used to describe individuals who tend to relapse to a life of questionable behavior. The social
process theory may explain a possible link to recidivism, and this argument known in the criminal
justice sector as a criminal behavior that is a predictable result of a person s interaction with his or her
environment as mentioned in the book, Criminal Justice in Action the Core ; Nevertheless, whatever
the case may be, recidivism has become a vicious cycle as in the case of Michael Christopher Mejia,
[a]n admitted gang member told detectives he smoked a Whittier police officer and his cousin and shot
another cop, according to a tape recorded interview played in court... during a hearing to determine if
there is enough evidence for him to stand trial for the killings (NBC4). Likewise, recidivism is that
individual who is responsible for subjecting their spouse or partner to repeated domestic violence.
Domestic violence offenders resort to physical abuse as a method of establishing control and power in
a relationship. Most victims of domestic violence usually are subjected to more than one instance of
abuse by the same partner. It is very common for a batterer to submit

to do the right thing consistently from a moral and legal perspective.
A person with the strength of Learner is someone who wants to continuously learn and improve, are
able to concentrate for long periods of time and are motivated to further educate themselves (Rath,
2007). A Learner isn t satisfied with mere answers, they must figure things out, solve the puzzle and

Responsibility is taking ownership, committing to values and high standards (Rath, 2007). It is

Analysis Of Half Of A Yellow Sun
The Novel Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was first published in 2006 and
follows the interweaved narrative of three individuals living in Eastern Nigeria throughout the 1960s.
The Novel, set within the backdrop of the Biafra secession movement and subsequent civil war,
demonstrates how the daily life of Biafrans was riddled with conflict, turbulence and trauma.
Additionally, the novel depicts how the effects of colonialism remain a strong force in the everyday
lives of the characters as many continue to hold colonial sentiment. Furthermore, through the
character Odenigbo, Adichie highlights how education is an important tool for decolonisation and
allows citizens to create discourse on their own terms. Ultimately, the novel displays African life
within the context of a newly independent and turbulent state. This paper will aim to contextualise and
discuss such themes in Adichie s novel.
Half of a Yellow Sun takes its name from the symbol of Biafra. The novel follows the short lived life
of the nation through three characters. Ugwu a houseboy from a small village who works for an
academic named Odenigbo until he is conscripted into the Biafran army where he experiences the
harsh realities of war. Olanna a UK educated daughter of a wealthy chief and is Odenigbo s wife. She
too is greatly affected by the war and suffers from ongoing trauma after seeing atrocities in Kano,

Gender Stereotypes In Nowlan s The Fall Of A City
Gender stereotypes in Nowlan s The Fall of a City Why is it that girls can wear pants, but boys cannot
wear dresses? Why can girls play with trucks, but boys cannot play with dolls? Why has society
restricted girl like behavior for boys?
In The Fall of a City, Teddy, the protagonist faces similar challenges. The Fall of a City is a fictitious
short story written by Alden Nowlan. A young boy creates a miniature city out of paper and cardboard

Teddy that in order to be socially accepted in the adult world, he must abandon his innocent, child like
ways and succumb to gender stereotypes.

For instance, Teddy goes to the attic and sees that the city was as he had left it. Yet everything had
changed. Always before when he had come here, his flesh had tingled, his eyes had shone with
excitement. Now there was only a taste like that of a spoilt nutmeg (Nowlan 3). After Teddy s talk
with his uncle, his innocent love of playing with Theodoresburg has been ruined. Teddy sees the city
in a new perspective, knowing that adults believe that he is playing with paper dolls and dollhouses.
This reveals that Teddy is weak when it comes to his uncle, as he gives in to his torment. Once
humiliated by his uncle, Teddy is easily influenced by the idea of him exhibiting girl like behavior. In
addition, Teddy easily succumbs to gender stereotypes and lets his uncle ruin his love of playing with
the city. Another example is when Teddy [...] bent and seized the cardboard palace. Gritting his teeth
and grunting, he tore at its walls. The corrugated board was sturdy: he was crying by the time he
finished tearing it to shreds (Nowlan 4). In other words, Teddy destroys his fort and since he was
crying, it is evident that he was not happy about doing so. This also reveals that Teddy is very
sensitive and that his uncle s put downs really hurt him. Teddy s uncle went on about how Teddy is
acting like a girl by playing with dolls and dollhouses. He laughs at him and tells him that he

Comparing A Raisin In The Sun And The Secret Life Of Bees
In A Raisin in the Sun and The Secret Life of Bees, the female characters are well thought out to fit
into the time period of these books. The authors of these books did much research to create characters
appropriate for the time period of the story. They researched the history of the Civil Rights Movement
and how women both black and white act and are treated. This information is used to develop
characters that go along with the time period and fit into the story. It is important for authors to
research the lifestyles of people in the historical time frame in which their characters are living,
especially in historical fiction. Finding information on the roles of all types of people, from females to
males, parents to children and blacks to whites, during the time period of the story allows for the
characters and the story to align. When the characters are authentic to the historical time period, ...

She Walks In Beauty Apostrophe To The Ocean And Don Byron...
Passionate is Key (An Analysis of Lord Byron s Three Poems) Lord Byron, a romantic author from
the 18th century was a man who was considered as a player , a man who was always with multiple
women. In his lifetime Byron wrote many stories, three of those stories were, She Walks In Beauty,
Apostrophe To The Ocean, and Don Juan. In those three stories Lord Byron indicates very important
messages for each. The story She Walks in Beauty is a story that describes the perfect girl to Lord
Byron. Byron is very passionate about woman and describes in his eyes what the perfect woman
would look like. It tells us what is important to guys, the appearance of a woman, what they notice
first. In the story Byron states She walks in beauty, like the night of cloudless climes and starry skies
(line1 2). That line is stating that when a woman walks in, the man first notices how she walks, and
that she looks mysterious. The way a woman carries herself is very important. It s good to be
confident, a woman who is confident in herself shows it in the way she walks and carries herself.
Byron makes it a point at the end of the story that his girl has to be innocent. He states A mind at
peace with all below, a heart whose love is innocent (line 17 18). In other words byron is like a tiger,
he is experienced. He likes girls who are like lambs, innocent, young, and simple. Just like the girl he
describes in She Walks In Beauty. Not only is Byron passionate about woman he is also passionate

Historical Development of Law Enforcement Essays
Since 27 B.C. law enforcement has been used by humans as a means to defend property and keep
peace. Law enforcement has been changing ever since it was created. It will keep changing for the
greater good of the community as long is there is a continual need for law enforcement.
According to REAL POLICE. (N.D.) Para 5, the first organized police force was created by the great
nephew of Julius Caesar, Gaius Octavius in 27 B.C. These men were called Vigiles. The Vigiles were
armed with wooden clubs and small swords. They were formed to perform two duties, fight fires in
the city and arrest law breakers. The prefect of the Vigiles became a powerful man. He had the ability
to judge and sentence lawbreakers.

Research by Schmalleger (2005) shows that in 1829, the world s first modern police force was

men were called Bobbies. The new police were founded on two principles, one, belief that it was
possible to discourage crime, and two, practice of preventive patrol. To this day, Bobbies still patrol

Law enforcement was almost non existent in the American West during the late 1800 s and early 1900

document that persuaded caution in the use of spectral evidence , suggesting that the devil could

  • 2. Woman Writers of the Romantic Period Woman Writers of the Romantic Period Romanticism (also called Romantic Era or Romantic period) was a complex artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in the second half of the 18th century in Europe, and developed in reaction to the Industrial Revolution. In part, it was a movement against various social and political norms and ideas of the Age of Enlightenment. It strongly influenced the visual arts, music, and literature, but it had impact on education and natural history as well. During this period, writers and poets were actively engaged in the creation of a new form of artistic expression. The objective of this type of expression was to celebrate intuition, rather than reason. It is believed that the greatest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A large collection of Anna Barbauld s works was destroyed in the bombing of London in World War II. Anna Laetitia Barbaud was acclaimed for her genius and talent. Many writers admired her poetry. She often wrote of home, of children, and of her faith, but she did so in an individual voice. Her educational and political writing also reflects her independence of thought, and strength of conviction. Clearly, she deserves more credit than she has received these past one hundred and fifty years. Joanna Baillie is another notable woman writer of the Romantic era. Walter Scott called Joanna Baillie the best dramatic writer in Britain since the days of Shakespeare and Massinger was a Scottish dramatist and poetess. She was famous during her lifetime, and her plays were very well received. She was born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire on September 11, 1762, in the family of James Baillie and Dorothea Hunter. Joanna belonged to an old Scottish family, which claimed among its ancestors Sir William Wallace. Despite Joanna preferred playing in the garden and exploring the nature, she received an excellent education, and began very early to write poetry. In 1769 the Baillies moved from Bothwell to Hamilton, South Lanarkshire and a few years later Joanna was sent to Glasgow to attend a boarding school. In 1790, she published her first work Poems: Wherein it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Fashion School Application Essay As a child, I have always been a visually observatory person. Patterns, textiles, and fashion have always been high interests of mine. My childhood consisted of many Barbie dolls as toys, and it wasn t the Barbie dolls that I wanted to play with, but the clothes that I loved to collect and interchange between the dolls. • 5. Taking a Look at WESCAPE Development The first subject that must be viewed before looking at the actual WESCAPE Development is the demographics of Cape Town and further the Western Cape. The Western Cape is home to 5 822 734 million people; this would be approximately 11, 2 % (5 822 734 / 51 770 560) of the South Africa s total population. Western Cape s population has grown from 3 956 875 in 2006 to 5 822 734 in 2011. From 2006 till 2011, it is estimated that the Western Cape has received a net migration of 225 657 into the province. It is also been identified according to many demographic statistics that the Western Cape is one of the main two provinces in which people move to. This clearly indicates how there is an influx of people moving in to the Western Cape and how there is an increased demand of housing. • 6. Gender Roles In Theatre Introduction We decided on this research topic as a group after having been assigned the category of gender and sexuality. I had mentioned to my group that I had seen a significantly lower number of men in the theatre program at my high school, and this trend only seemed to continue as I reached post secondary. My colleagues agreed and stated their own experiences of either playing a character of a different gender in plays they had been in, or watching a play and seeing a clear difference between the number of men and women on stage. This brought us to consider why this might be the case. Why are there so few men in theatre? I then brought up how, being a film student, there never seems to be a shortage of male actors for our films. My colleagues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We were also sure to include a variety of fine arts professions in order to mask our intention behind the survey so that it would be more difficult for someone to throw the results. These were then randomized differently for every survey participant. These results were used to directly answer our research question/ test our hypothesis. Anonymity was ensured by the fact that there was no question asking participants to enter their name, age or post secondary institution, and consent was achieved by the first question of our survey being a short consent form. For example, how to physically find the density of an object by finding their mass with a balance and finding the object s volume using the method water displacement. The purpose of the experiment was to find out which metal is used to create post 1982 pennies. Pre 1982 pennies were made out of copper but then the metal used for making pennies changed. The metal used to create pre 1982 pennies was copper. Since the metal used to make pennies changed the density of post 1982 changed. The predicted density was believed to have something close to the metal zinc. Which will show that the post 1982 pennies are made out of zinc. During the experiment, the mass of the post 1982 pennies were found using an electric balance and the volume was found by water displacement. The pennies mass and volumes were recorded. After the recordings of five trials the densities was found of those each trials. After conducting the experiment by trying to find the density of the post 1982 pennies. The average density found after doing the experiment was 7.042 g/mL. The density of zinc is 7.13 g/mL. However, errors may have occurred tampering the density that was discovered. In ester based polymer, this process usually involves three stages: (i) incubation stage, in which water absorption occurs; (ii) induction stage, during which polymer chain is broken via ester bonds; (iii) erosion, the final stage, wherein the water soluble entities (for example PEG blocks and oligomers) are dissolved in the buffer solution, resulting in a polymer mass loss [22]. Environmental devastation from coal extraction is unmatched. The most popular form of coal mining is mountaintop removal mining, a form of surface mining which removes mountaintops to reach coal. The popularity of mountaintop removal mining is due to the cost effectiveness of the process; unfortunately, the only one saving on costs is the miners, and at the expense of the environment. Deforestation; harm in aquatic communities; accelerated sediment and nutrient transport; increased algal production, as well as possible human health impacts from poorly regulated remediation requirements by SMCRA, results in gross environmental degradation. This essay proposes an amendment to section 515 (the approximate original contour requirement) of SMCRA; restoration should require the reclaimed area to have the same environmental utility it had prior to the mining operation. A brief overview of mountaintop removal mining and mine remediation processes will be provided at the outset of the essay. Further, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) will be explained in regards to mountaintop removal mining remediation. Colonies were created for varying religions, lifestyles, and economic reasons. The New England colonies had numerous difference and few similarities with the Southern Colonies. Due to the geographic location of the Southern Colonies, their economic development relied mainly on agriculture. Being closer to the equator than New England, the south received longer planting seasons and also had good soil for planting. The subjective reality, the objective reality and Indigenous objective reality. Subjective reality is the individual s identity that is comprised of someone s thoughts and feelings. Objective reality is outside of the self, encompassing the culture in mainstream society, such as institutions, history, capitalism and rules. The indigenous objective reality is influenced by both mainstream society and Aboriginal culture. People s feelings and behaviours are likely to mimic those of the urban people around them. There are two process that occur, externalization and internalization. Externalization is the process of taking a thought and projecting it to the objective reality. For example, an individual will externalize their Indigenous culture to school by bringing traditions from home like dances and teaching them to students. Externalizing can also happen from mainstream society to the Indigenous culture by bringing what is learned at school to back to the family. Internalization is how the individual s subjective reality is affected by the surrounding institutions through rules, norms, etc. Therefore, they internalize the Indigenous culture through family traditions, and Internalize mainstream society through the media, school rules, etc. Early Europeans thought that it was impossible for Indigenous peoples to participate in the modern world ... One example is Alice Kinnian. In the story, she is depicted as a quiet, non aggressive person, but in the movie she is very much the opposite in character. For one, she never really made a move towards Charly, however, in the movie, she is the more aggressive between the two. The Wild Lands Policy is described in detail in section V. The article first describes the three ways the new Wild Lands Policy was to work. The first way was it affirmed that the agency should consider wilderness values as an integral component of its multiple use mission, identifying lands with wilderness characteristics (LWC) in its mandatory section 201 inventories. Second, the Policy directed BLM to use its section 202 land use planning authority to consider designating appropriate LWC as Wild Lands, that is, lands that the agency would protect in amended RMPs by avoiding impairment to their wilderness characteristics. Third, for project level decisions in areas not yet inventoried under the new framework, the Policy instructed BLM to inventory apparent wilderness characteristics, and then discuss the proposed project s effects to them as well as measures to minimize those effects in a NEPA analysis. After Teddy s talk with his uncle, his innocent love of playing with Theodoresburg has been ruined. Teddy sees the city in a new perspective, knowing that adults believe that he is playing with paper dolls and dollhouses. This reveals that Teddy is weak when it comes to his uncle, as he gives in to his torment. Once humiliated by his uncle, Teddy is easily influenced by the idea of him exhibiting girl like behavior.
