Grounded theory was chosen because of its approach and the benefit it would provide to the research.
Individuals are chosen based on their association with the children s aid society and coding is done
after every interview to capture the major themes and to look for new ones that have not been
discovered (Clark, 2011). This research is geared on not only discovering new themes, but also
provide insight into ending racialization of the child welfare system. What makes this approach
effective is saturation, this means that one will continue to interview and gather information until there
is no more new themes explaining why there is a racialization of the Child welfare system (Padgett,

Native American Rock Art History
Native American rock art is a big part of early American history. Most of these fragments of history
were destroyed and lost to the public due to vandalism, mass settlement and colonization, and man
made things like dams. The history of the rock art is incredibly fascinating. I was very interested in the
National History Day Fair last year, and I found out about it fairly late. I decided to try to enter it. I
made a documentary and process paper before finding out that I was past the due date. This year, I was
determined to try. I was thinking of several topics to do my project on, like Malala, World War I, The
Berlin Wall, and The Treaty of Velasco/independence of Texas. But when I saw the theme, I knew
exactly what to do for my presentation.

Societal Influences in 19th Century Europe During the Victorian Era, living in the middle class, many
people were strongly influenced by society, especially in Europe. People felt that they needed to look
perfect in the public eye and everything they did had to be something that society would approve of,

Nora and Torvold had a nanny for the children, and Ivan and Praskovya had a butler and pantry boy
who became very important to Ivan in the weeks of his life. Gender played an enormous role in
shaping Nora, Torvald, Ivan, and Praskovya s identities. Society had very clear views of what a man
should be and what a woman should be. The men were to be the providers for the family, they had to
have a respectable job and take care of all the family s financial needs. The women were to stay at
home and tend to her husbands and children s needs, whatever they may be. Nora and Torvald were
the perfect example of this. Nora stayed home with the children and the nanny and decorated the
house and made everything comfortable for everyone while Torvold worked at the bank. When Nora
took the loan out from the bank she had to hide it from everyone because that was a very disrespectful
thing to do in society s eyes at that time, which is why when Torvold found out he was infuriated.
When Torvold realized that if anyone found out their reputation would be destroyed and everything he
worked hard for would be gone because it would have seemed that they have stepped out of their
gender roles and gone against society, he said to her, Now you have destroyed all my happiness. You
have ruined all my future. (Ibsen 77).

The purpose of this lab was to determine which regions of the body have the most touch receptors and
in turn which regions of the body have the greatest representation on the somatosensory cortex map.
The somatosensory cortex map is located in the parietal lobe and processes tactile information (D.
Purves, Augustine, Fitzpatrick, 2001). According to Neuroscience 2nd edition, the increased
representation of specific body areas in somatosensory cortex map is a function of evolution (D.

In order to do this a hypothesis was created and was as follows: It was hypothesized that the finger
tips would have the greatest representation on the somatosensory cortex map compared to other areas
of the body because humans have evolved to preform precision tasks with the hands (Marzke, 1997).
This hypothesis was proven to be correct because for subject one, the four highest values recorded
were finger tips. The fifth value recorded for subject one was a tie between the tip of the thumb and
the palm of the hand. On subject two, the three highest values recorded were: the tip of the index
finger, the tip of the thumb, and the nose. The following values were the fourth finger and then a tie
between the fifth finger and the palm of the hand. This data demonstrates that humans have evolved to
have fingers capable of preforming detailed tasks. This lab re enforces the results of other studies (D.
Purves, Augustine, Fitzpatrick, 2001). Outside of the fingers, the only area of the body that stood out
in the data set for both subjects was the palm of the hand. Additionally, the nose of subject two had a

Dubliners by James Joyce compiles a variety of snapshots of life and culture; it captures people with
very different situations and backgrounds all against the backdrop of early 20th century Dublin.
Though the characters are not tethered to reality, the themes often relate directly to events in Joyce s
experience (Gray). The stories in totality do not follow one constant plot, but if one story can be said
to represent the collection as a whole, it is certainly The Dead. The final story in the series, The Dead
encapsulates the entirety of feelings that Joyce has towards Dublin and connects Joyce with the
narrative in an indirect but powerful way. Each of the other stories contains elements, symbols, or
motifs that support or relate to those within The Dead. Love, loss, alcoholism, money, and other
themes are tools; the reader may learn from them through the ways that Joyce s characters view them.
Ireland was Joyce s home, but despite his love for the country, he disliked how lethargic it had
become. He distanced himself from the its inability to embrace a changing world. Dubliners is not
simply a criticism of the Irish, however. Though the first fourteen stories demonstrate Joyce s

Throughout his life, George had weak lungs, so when World War II came about, he was deemed unfit
for any type of military service ( George Orwell History ). In 1941, he obtained work with BBC.
Orwell kept an eye on propaganda broadcasts ( George Orwell History )to India and counteracted

Theme Of Isolation In Lord Of The Flies
Francesco Petrarch once said Man has no greater enemy than himself. It can be assumed that if man is
left alone, he is with himself; from that, the question, What happens if man is isolated, with only his
enemy to keep him company? can be posed. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, this
question is developed and given an answer, with the isolated setting bringing out the nature of man
and blurring the distinguishment between civilized and savage. The author used the setting of a
deserted island to illustrate the motifs of civilization and darkness through the effect it has on the
characters. The isolation that comes with crashing on a deserted island affects all the characters, seen
most dramatically through Jack. Being brought into this setting transforms the civilized choir leader
into a savage hunter and murderer who s given into his inner demons. When the boys first crash land
onto the island, they were proper English schoolboys. Due to the separation from society, however, the
boys start to regress, giving in to their more animalistic instincts. Jack starts off as the chapter
chorister and head boy who tries to take leadership of the tribe the boys form; he fails to do so, turning
him away from order and reason (Golding 22). He neglects his duties and turns his attention to
hunting the native pigs, prompting him to let the fire, their gateway back to society, go out; this pits
Ralph against Jack, who represent civilization and savagery

Optimism In Voltaire s Candide
FACT: What I found extremely fascinating in Voltaire s work is the idea that It is demonstrable that
things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for all being created for an end, all is necessarily for the
best end (83). This quote by the character Pangloss is one of extreme optimism. He believes that they
are living in the best world possible and everything that happens is meant to be. This really resonates
with me because I do have the belief that God has an influence over our lives, so with that being said
anything that happens good or bad God had a reason for. The concept of faith is what plays a key role
in this belief; we must have faith in God and what path he paves for us whether we understand it or

Pangloss states from the beginning that we live in the best of all possible worlds (81). Which is
seemingly the furthest thing from perfect as we continue to read. Everything that happens to Candide
after being banished from the castle is a series of events that would most likely lead someone to
believe that the world is a terrible place. Misfortune seems to follow Candide and his optimistic view
of the world. He wanders for a time to the point of starvation when he is found by a group of men who
bring him back to health, but only to place him into the hands of the Bulgar military where he is to
face even more tragedy. Even through all the abuse and torture he still maintains this naïve outlook
that life is the way it s supposed to be. Why would being beaten and abused be what was meant to be
in this best of all possible
