Foreign Direct Investment As A Key Component Of Economic...
Foreign Direct Investment as a key component of economic globalization could play a prominent
role in stimulating economic growth through capital formation, technology transfer and enhancing
employment opportunities in the developing countries like Nepal. Nepal and India both have
liberalized foreign investment policies that would help promote FDI in Nepal (Dahal et.al. 2004).
Despite significant liberalization of the foreign investment regime and the introduction of attractive
investment incentives, Nepal s achievements, both in terms of the volume of FDI and its
developmental impact, failed to match national expectations (Athukorala, et.al., 2006) The
country has not been able to draw on the potential technological and other contributions that FDI
can make to the process of development (Pant, 2010). A restrictive FDI regime, high import
tariffs, exit barriers for firms, stringent labor laws, poor quality infrastructure, centralized decision
making processes, and lack of export processing zones and Export Trading House make Nepal an
unattractive investment location (Regmi, 2012). Nepal s FDI potential is heavily under exploited,
despite the fact that the country offers a huge potential not only for market seeking investors but
also resource seeking ones (Adhikari, 2013a).. Moreover, Nepal is the worst performer in South
Asia (and one of the worst ones in the world) in terms of attracting FDI (Adhikari, 2013b). The
country s insurgency period in the past has also hindered

Neville s Use Of Cannibalism In Dracula
The lack of preys makes them attack others of their own, hence making a regular threat of
cannibalism. As it previously mentioned, Neville believes that the bacteria originated during the
war. According to Clasen, this belief is a projection of human anxieties; within this context, it is
a reflection of the fear of nuclear and biological war and their consequences, in idea portrayed in
the novel with one of the flashbacks the protagonist has, in which Neville and his wife
contemplate the idea by which the bombings of the war and vampires are related somehow. One
of the main concepts present in the novel is the sexual frustration of the protagonist. He is agitated
at night, when the vampires attack his house, by the female vampires standing outside his house,
who are posing and thus trying to seduce him to take him out of the house, Neville is as tempted
as horrified by the bodies and lips of the vampires, in the same way... Show more content on

With the purpose of avoiding the temptation, Neville listens to music and occupies himself by
reading. Such frustration is so great, that he even almost got him killed when he got out of the
house in fury. Apart from the sexual frustration, what Neville really needs is companionship, a
matter shown through his desperate efforts and the huge amount of time spent to befriend with
the dog, in such a desperate way the he leaves apart his research for that purpose. He feels so
isolated that when he finds another survivor, he thinks it is a product of his mind, a hallucination.
This lack of companionship and socialization is reflected as well in the living vampires of the
novel, who at first apparently do not talk to each other, and the undead vampires that do not even
have the ability to speak. The paradox of his isolation is that he is not actually alone. Yet the
vampires in the novel

Persuasive Essay On Hockey Jerseys
You may think that if you want to have your own NHL jersey to wear to games, sports bars, and
playoff parties, you are going to have to spend a lot of money, or give up on getting a quality
garment. That just isn t the case. You can now find good NHL jerseys cheap for sale on line.
When the National Hockey League was established in 1917, from the ruins of the National Hockey
Association, the players wore regular sweaters with numbers sewn or pinned to the back. The
sweaters were not specially made, just purchased from a men s clothing store.
Each team, of course, wore a different color. These early NHL jerseys were frequently striped, in a
barber pole style or with just a single color band across the chest. There were only ten teams in ...

By the 1970s, all kinds of experiments were being made with the whole hockey uniform. In this
decade, the concept of all teams in a city wearing the same colors started to take hold.
When you are shopping for NHL jerseys, for yourself or to give as gifts, you should look at the
variety of cheap jerseys that you can find on the internet. They are able to be made to a high
standard for less money when they are made in China. Jerseys from China have all the same
details that the real players jerseys do, like stitched on logos and patches. They use quality fabrics
so they are durable. They don t require any special cleaning like expensive jerseys can. They look
just as good, but cost you less money.
In 1995, the principle of the third jersey really took off. They are called third jerseys because
they are neither the regular home or away jerseys, but have a different style or design. Many of
them are retro or vintage designs from the team s past. Others have been designed to be worn on
holidays or for other commemorative purposes. You can find all the best third designs in the online

Metaphors And Figurative Language
Literature Review
Nowadays, metaphor is considered as influential in our everyday life and its traces are not only
evident in the language but also in thought and action. The function of metaphor in language,
culture, and thought has been viewed by various disciplines (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). In the
discipline of linguistics, in particular, metaphor and figurative language have long been the subject
of studies from many different perspectives. From a cognitive linguistic perspective, metaphor is a
mental mapping (p. 1825) in the cognitive processes of thinking and reasoning of people in their
everyday life (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). As noted by Tendahl and Gibbs (2008), the last century
ended up with its revolutionary studies on metaphor, most significantly in the realm of cognitive
science. They discuss a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We can find several theories in the discipline of Linguistics including relevance theory. Relevance
theory, originally proposed by Sperber and Wilson (1986 1987), is discussed in detail by Tendahl
and Gibbs (2008). According to Tendahl and Gibbs, relevance theory complements cognitive
linguistics in defining metaphor and its functioning. As they point out, in a cognitive linguistic
perspective, people use metaphors in their language because they think metaphorically and different
language configurations are viewed as conceptual processing mechanisms (p. 1825) where an
operation of mapping the concepts in the mind of speakers occurs (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). In
their view, relevance theory, both by its encoding and decoding pattern of thoughtcommunication
and by its view at the intended meaning in a certain context of communication, also has a cognitive
look at language and mind, or more specifically at communication and thought. We can clearly see
such cognitive perspective in relevance theory as suggested by Sperber and Wilson

Gender Roles in American Society Essay
Gender Roles in American Society
Femininity and masculinity are topics that have been debated over in our society extensively,
through psychological research and day to day interaction with people. Children learn from their
parents as well as society the concept of feminine and masculine. The majority of people tend to
believe that these conceptions are biological but I believe it is more cultural. From birth, female
children are shaped by society as being sweet, caring, loving, and delicate and usually associated
with the color pink. While male children are shaped by being tough, aggressive, and competitive
and associated with the color blue. As these children grow, the boy is given a football to play with

During the early stages of a child s life the mother is the dominant figure. She really is the only
figure until the child starts to play with other children. This is when children can venture away
from their mother and find and develop their on own sense of self. Biology too plays a major
role in the differences between male and female. Genetically, there are differing chromosomes.
XY for male and XX for female. These chromosome differences account for the physical
differences that men and women have. In dealing with body composition, males are more likely
to be taller and more muscular. Males also have testosterone, the male sex hormone. It is said that
males with high levels are more confrontational and smile less. Women that have low levels of
estrogen, the female sex hormone, are said to be more disagreeable and confrontational. Maybe
because men have such a huge advantage over women by being physically larger, they are
supposed to be more aggressive and women having less physical strength are supposed to be the
nurturers. Gender is a major cause of a person s identity. People act the way the do because of the
gender that has been assigned to them. Have you ever heard someone say, It s just their nature to
act like that. A sense of identity can be seen in many young children. When a child is ready to
make the decision of what they are and who they want to be, they will do so. The child creates

The Aeneid-the Role of Fate
Fate is the essential idea of The Aeneid, but more importantly, the underlying force throughout the
text. Fate cannot be changed; it is the set of events with the inevitable result. Virgil uses the idea of
fate to narrate and advance through his epic poem, but perhaps also to illustrate that the gods had
originally intended for Rome to become a great and powerful empire. The king of gods, Jupiter, has
chosen Aeneasand his preordained path to destiny, by leading the Trojans and creating the
foundations for the Roman Empire. However, a variety of gods interfere with Aeneas s direction
of fate in order to satisfy their own desires, only to discover that Aeneas s fate can be manipulated,
but never overturned.

Perhaps the most significant example of the importance of fate in The Aeneidhappens in Book VI;
the golden branch. Aeneas and his fleet arrive on the coast on Cumae in search of the Sibyl at
the Temple of Apollo. Following his father s instructions, Aeneas asks the Sibyl to gain him
entrance to Dis so he may visit his father s spirit. However, in order to enter Dis with any
possibility of returning, Aeneas must first locate a sign to gain him access across the Acheron
River. The Sibyl then explains to Aeneas that the sign is a golden branch in a nearby forest, if the
branch breaks off the tree easily then fate awards Aeneas a pass into the underworld. If the branch
does not break off then Aeneas is not destined to go.
A bough is hidden in a shady tree; its leaves and pliant stem are golden, set aside as sacred to
Proserpina. The grove serves as its screen, and shades enclose the bough in darkened valleys.
Only he may pass beneath earth s secret space who first plucks the golden leaved fruit of that
tree. Lovely Proserpina ordained that this be offered her as gift. And when the first bough is
torn off, a second grows again with leaves of gold, again of that same metal. So let your eyes
search overhead; and when the bough is found, then pluck it down by hand as due: for if the Fates
have summoned you, the bough will break off freely, easily; but otherwise, no power can overcome
it, hard iron cannot help

Literary Devices In The Most Dangerous Game By Richard...
In The Most Dangerous Game , author Richard Connell uses a variety of literary device to depict
the theme. He uses the main character, Rainsford, to be the character which unfolds the theme
as he goes through the experience of being treated like a wild animal and becoming the prey of
another human for sport. Connell uses three literary devices frequently including
foreshadowing, irony and symbolism in order to support the main theme, put yourself in the
shoes of the animals you hunt. Foreshadowing was a commonly used literary device the the
author used in order to illustrate the point of view of Rainford, a character oblivious of what
was to come in his future and what he was going to experience pertaining to emotional problems
associated with hunting. Before Rainsford aborted his ship and swam to the mysterious island,
he wasn t sure of what laid ahead besides remarks his shipmates made before portraying the
nature of an island close the area they were sailing in. (Connell pg 1) The place has a reputation, a
bad one. This shows that Rainsford is in dangerous waters, but he doesn t quite understand why. He
also questions the words of his shipmates with a cleverly placed word. (Connell pg 1) Cannibals? A
cannibal is when a member of a specific species eats its own flesh. This is hinting toward the idea of
murder in the form of hunting for sport, one human harming another, without considering their
victims emotions. Another somewhat iry form of foreshadowing which the

Allusions Of Allusions In Blake s The Garden Of Love
Short exercise paper #1 Blake s lyrical poem The Garden of Love contains several allusions that
reference the first book in the Bible Genesis . During this paper, I will be discussing one instance
where Blake s poem alludes to Genesis 3. To summarize, there are several instances in which
Blake s poem The Garden of Love alludes to Genesis, of these I chose to focus on the chapel built
in the midst and its connection to Eve s interaction with the Serpent.
Blake s poem begins with the speaker visiting the Garden of Love during which they discover, A
chapel was built in the midst. The speaker points out that this chapel is built/where I used to play
all of this happens during the first stanza. The speaker does not indicate they watched the chapel
built in fact; the speaker almost seems shocked by its presence, saw what I had never seen and it
becomes clear whatever this chapel is it has altered how the speaker will continue to interact with
the garden, built in the midst/where I used to play on the green . It is important to realize this
chapel not only altered the garden itself, but also, has essentially replaced the green so; instead of
play, there is this chapel .
During the third book of Genesis, a dialogue happens concerning Eve and the Serpent. The Serpent
questions Eve about the garden to which she replies, We may eat of the fruit of the trees...But of
the fruit of the tree which is in the midst...Ye shall not eat...lest ye die (Genesis 3:3). To

Phantom Limb Syndrome
Phantom limb syndrome is an extraordinary condition that is caused by amputating a limb or
being born without a limb (Flor, 2002); This condition affects approximately 80% to 90% of
patients who have had a limb amputated (Flor, 2002). The first documented case of phantom limb
syndrome was in the mid 16th century (Nikolajsen Jensen, 2001). The description was given by a
French military surgeon by the name of Ambroise ParГ© (1510 1590) when he noticed that some
of his injured patients would express that they were experiencing extreme painin their missing limb
(Nikolajsen Jensen, 2001). He studied and wrote down the characterizations of this post amputation

Phantom limb syndrome and post amputation pain is far more common in adults than in children,
this would be related to the brains rate or ability to regenerate. A child brain is going to repair much
quicker than an adult, as their brains are still in rapid development (Scheinberg, 2016). Other
factors can play a part and may increase the chances of a patient experiencing this condition, and
some of them include: preamputation pain in the limb that was amputated, a blood clot that formed
in the amputated limb, a preamputation infection, previous damage to spinal cord or peripheral
nerves that supplied the affected limb, traumatic amputation, and the type of anaesthesia that was
used during the operation (Scheinberg, 2016). Nikolajsen and Jensen (2001) state that in paediatric
amputees, it was found that most of the children who were experiencing phantom pain, also
expressed feeling pain before the operation. The symptoms that occur in amputees/people born
without a limb can differ slightly, but all the symptoms are experiences in a limb that no longer
exist (Scheinberg, 2016). The symptoms of phantom limb syndrome include; shooting, stabbing,
and piercing sensations, pleasure, one may feel the sensation of clothing or jewelry touching the
missing limb, other experience their limb feeling as though it is still attached and functioning
normally, and lastly patients can experience sensations of numbness, tickling, or even a cramping
sensation (Scheinberg,

The Soviet Union Of Soviet Republics
Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, former Soviet republics have been forced to
undertake the harrowing task of achieving stability for their citizens and developing their own
identities independent from the former hegemon. Some, such as Poland, have been successful in
this regard, while others, such as Georgia, have been less fortunate. For Ukraine, a vast agricultural
country with centuries old ties to Russia, answers to the questions of stability and identity have
been uncertain ones. In spring 2014, following the Ukrainian Revolution in which pro Russian
president Viktor Yanukovych was deposed and replaced by Olexander Turchnyov, Russian forces
invaded Crimea after signing an accession treaty on March 18. Throughout the year, this conflict
escalated with violence between pro Russian militants along with Russian forces and Ukrainian
military and thousands of deaths. The violence in Crimea, where Russians have an ethnic majority
of 58%, and eastern Ukraine began to dissipate in late September when Russian military
commenced a withdrawal from Ukraine. The violence intensified again in early November when
pro Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine held new elections supported by Russia and denounced
by Ukraine, the United States, and the European Union. This is an issue that has vast economic
repercussions for powerful eurozone countries such as Germany, whose GDP growth rate fell to
0.4% in the second quarter, and who has 300,000 jobs that rely on Russian

The Persuasive Tone of The Flea Essay
The Persuasive Tone of The Flea
John Donne, a member of metaphysical school in the Seventeenth century, exhibited his brilliant
talent in poetry. In The Flea, he showed the passion to his mistress via persuasive attitude. The tone
might straightforwardly create playfulness or sinfulness; yet, the poem contains none of either.
What impress readers most is situation and device. The situation between the speaker and the
audience is persuasion, love or marriage. As to device, the notable parts are diction and rhetoric
skills. Furthermore, unique characteristics of this poem are also an important element of his
persuasive tone.
First of all, the situation created by Donne is remarkable. Although there is only one ... Show more

More than the effect, it also has an implication. The flea having sucked his blood and then hers,
he takes a far bolder step and suggest that because their blood in now mixed in the flea s body,
they are in some meaningful physical way joined already. i[i]
Finally, The Flea contains two major unique characteristics. One of Donne s most successful effects
is sudden contrast.ii[ii] The insect seems to be no connection with romance, but by sucking blood
of two characters of the poem, the flea builds a bridge between the two persons that surprises many
readers.
ВЎВҐThe Flea seems particularly unerotic in character, extraordinarily preoccupied with ethical
and social, particularly marital, mattersВЎK. but also transforms the sexual seduction lyric into a
more serious persuasion to full affectionate and physical loving. iii[iii]
The other is Donne s skill, dramatic monologue. In both line one of the first and the second
stanzas, the poet began with strong voice. Later in the following lines of the two stanzas, Donne
himself explained his reasons logically. The only difference is his attitude. The tone of stanza two
is stronger than stanza one, and stanza three is even stronger than stanza two; therefore, in killing it
the poet s mistress would commit, not only murder on him, a crime she is injured to, but suicide
and sacrilege. iv[iv]
To the end, The Flea describes a

Animal Testing in Drug Industry
Animal Testing in Drug Industry: Is It Appropriate or Not?
Millions of people were killed by incurable diseases, such as smallpox, rabies, et cetera before the
18th century due to lack of knowledge in developing drugs and vaccine at that time. People caught
by the diseases were hopeless because they knew that no one could help them. In the mid 1800s,
animal testing was introduced to drug industry by Edward Jenner (Trueman, 2002). His brilliant
discovery in developing smallpox vaccine by using animals helped a lot of people and gave hope
to the medical field that incurable diseases were not incurable anymore. Although he was not the

Verbal language is not the only means of communication. We can notice a person s emotions
without him saying anything because of non verbal language or body language he expressed. If we
can examine body language in human, then we are also able to observe non verbal language of
animals. In accordance to Charles Darwin in his book, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and
Animals, many of the non verbal reactions of human in expressing emotions are identical with
those of animals (Darwin, 1873). Thus, there is no reason that one, especially a scientist who has
conducted a lot of experiments with animals, does not know whether an animal is suffering from
mental pain or not. As psychological pains caused by animal testing offends the tested animals
welfare, alternative methods must be used to replace animal testing.
Animal testing not only afflicts animals being used, but also our society. A lot of harsh protests and
terrorism have been done against animal testing. Those actions have caused many public losses.
Plenty of innocent people have died; many unrelated private companies have been accidentally
involved in the damaging acts, and numerous public facilitations have been ruined in those actions
which are usually conducted by animal lovers organizations. Animal Liberation Front (ALF) is one
of the most extreme animal rights advocate organizations. According to FBI, ALF has been causing

The Electoral College Is The Best Interests Of All The People
The Electoral College has long been controversial, and is subject to both criticism and defense.
To understand why either side is valid we must look at its values and its weaknesses, its pros and
cons. The Electoral College was devised to proportionally dole out the power of selecting our
executives geographically. In doing so the Electoral Collegegives otherwise marginalized portions
of the U.S. population a voice. Adversely the Electoral College can be seen as an obstruction to
democracyand the will of the people. Whether or not the Electoral College serves the best interests
of all the people in United States is up to debate. This paper functions to reveal what validities either
argument may include.
The Electoral College was founded on the idea that no entity, federal or popular, should have the
power to singularly determine the outcome of electing our country s executive. Founding father
James Madison writes in the Federalist papers about his concern regarding tyrannical factions that
arise in pure democracies. Madison in Federalist Paper No. 10, recognizes a faction as ...a number
of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and
actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adversed to the rights of other
citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community. (The Federalist Papers) In

How Principals Should Apply Instructional Leadership...
In a well researched and scholarly book, Doctors Joesph and Jo Blase accomplish two tasks:
outlining how principals should apply instructional leadership skills while performing their jobs,
and describing how principals should maintain positive relationships with their teachers while still
effectively leading. As well published, credentialed authors in the field of educational leadership,
the both of the Blases serve as credible sources on the topic. To accomplish their desired tasks, the
authors divide the book into brief chaptersthat each explain either an attribute of instructional
leadership or a method for maintaining positive principal teacher relations. According to the authors
themselves, the book s shows what successful instructional leaders do to enhance teaching and
learning and the effects that their behaviors have on teachers performance and well being (xiii).
Through the authors careful organization of research, use of primary sources, and use of secondary
sources, the book accomplishes this goal.
To organize their research, the Blases first divide their information into the broad categories of
Part I: The Art and Science of Instructional Leadership and Part II: How Supervisor s Behaviors
Positive and Negative Affect Teachers. By first dividing their information into these two broad
categories, the authors effectively organize their research. While the concept of carrying out
instructional leadership, as described in Part I, and how leaders should

There are many examples of this with samples of these poems by Qianlong himself throughout
the book and pictures of himself, mostly in a propaganda style though. The book gives a great
short explanation of how Qianlong ruled the nation and how he lived in his home life. It details
his wives and how much he liked them and what he did with them on their many travels together
across the Chinese countryside. It goes into detail how much Qianlong was affected by the
death of his first wife and how it might have had an affect on how he ruled from thereon. It
shows that he was a loving person to his family and he treated his parents with as much respect
and care for as he could give. There are descriptions of how Qianlong would go about his daily
schedule and how hard it was to be in his position. It stresses how tough this job would be
considering the events going on inside the nation and foreign threats. It covers his military
campaigning and how he saw himself as a great warlord and giving himself the title old man of
ten perfect victories . Elliott doesn t go into extreme detail of each battle or conflict but it does
mention all the major ones, especially the ones that Qianlong was most proud of. His international
scene is covered very well. It describes how he went about his interactions with all the people that

Renaissance Music Compared To The Modern Era
Another comparison that can be made to the modern era and Renaissance Europe is the field of
music. Music has always been a part of the history and served as a form of entertainment for a
long time. In early Renaissance Europe, wealthy merchants were able to educate their family in the

Imperial Japanese Army Responsible For Ww2 Essay
The Imperial Japanese army was responsible for their own downfall in WWII, as they were too
egotistical, putting pride before logical and effective decisions, started making fatal mistakes
and planning failures, and made game changing decisions that ultimately caused great defeat for
the Imperial Japanese army. The Imperial Japanese army was responsible for their own downfall
in WWII as they made fatal decisions. First, the Japanese army neglected to routinely change
their codes. American code breakers quickly broke the Japanese code and were able to anticipate
almost all Japanese moves, resulting in many victories for the Allies, such as the Battle of
Midway and the assassination of Admiral Isoruku Tammamoto, and consequently great defeat for
Japan. Elliot Carlson, a journalist and historian states in an NPR interview, That victory was
possible, in large part, because of the work of a little known naval codebreaker named Joe

Separate But Equal Essay
Was Separate but Equal really equal? In many states colored people were not treated equal,
many were discriminated against and many children were not treated fairly. Their schools and
learning conditions were terrible, many of there schools didn t even have running water.
Houston, Charles H. states in his article that many African Americans were referred to as second
class citizens. Many colored people were separated from whites by the laws put in place; such as
separate but equal and many others. There were many groups that stood up against these laws
such as the NAACP which held many protests. These groups also stood up against many laws
such as separate but equal . The Passing of separate but equal laws was unfair to blacks it s
discrimination lead to the Brown v. Board of Educationcase that had a positive result because public
schools were desegregated.
Separate but Equal laws were created to separate colored people from white people. Despite
many disagreements they still made segregation legal the courts challenged earlier civil rights
legislation and handed down a series of decisions that permitted states to segregate people of color
(Smithsonian). This quote helps to explain why separate but equal was created and that many
people already disagreed with is but instead of revising it they passed it. Separate but equal was a
very contravital topic there were many protests and many disagreements involving this topic and

Health Care Industry Pam Simmons University of Phoenix HCS/449: Health Administration
Capstone Marilyn Johnson June 4, 2012 In today s world, everyone wants the most from health
care. In the last 10 years, health care has changed in a big way. One thing, in which has changed,
is the way older adults are living ten years longer than before (Imperial NHS, 2011). Another
thing is that people do not have to wait as long for treatments, like before, such as eye surgeries,

Conquest Of Aztecs Essay
Within the religious aspect of the Western Civilization, there were specific omens reported after
the Conquest of Aztec. Most of the omes were disasters and people didn t know whether to

later return to reclaim his kingdom. The Aztecs believed that this could occur in the year One
Reed (1519) and that god could take on many different forms. Including a pale skinned, bearded
man. When Moctezuma first met Cortez, Cortez went to show his grattitude when all of a
sudden Moctezuma s two guards stopped him. Moctezuma was not allowed to be touched.
When Cortez was able to speak with Moctezuma he took off his necklace of pearls and placed it
around Moctezuma s neck. Walking down the street a little later, two servants came up and gave
Cortez two necklesses. The necklesses were wrapped in cloth and were made from red snails,

Naturalistic Observation On Door Holding Behavior
The door holding behavior of 63 young adults was observed as they walking through the doors of a
university dining hall. People entering or exiting the building were only considered participants of
the study if they had an opportunity to hold the door for a person behind them; those who walked
through the door without anyone behind them were excluded from the study. Informed consent was
not obtained from the participants.
Design
This naturalistic observation was conducted to observe the door holding behaviors performed by
young adults as a way to examine courteousness, or consideration of others.
Three possible behaviors were identified: Did Not Hold, Held Door, Stepped Aside. A coding of

The experimenter hypothesized that the Hold Door behavior would occur most frequently. The
results of the study support this hypothesis, as more than three fourths of the participants performed

Since college students schedules vary, a more representative sample could have been obtained had
the observations taken place at several different times of day. Additionally, the fact that the study
was conducted at a dining hall may have affected the results, as it is possible that people who did
not have a campus meal plan were unintentionally excluded from the study. Recording door holding
behaviors at multiple different on campus locations may help to establish a more representative

Relationship Between Surface Area and Rate Of Reaction Essay
An Experiment To Investigate The Relationship Between Surface Area and Rate Of Reaction
Introduction
The rate of reaction (reaction velocity) may be defined as the rate of change of concentration of a
stated reactant or product. The rate of a reaction is found by measuring the amount of a reactant
used up per unit of time or the amount of a product produced per unit of time. A reaction can be
made to go faster or slower by changing a number of factors. In order for a reaction to occur
certain things are necessary: particles must collide with each other and the collision must have
enough energy for the reaction to occur. If this happens the original bonds are broken and new
bonds are formed so that new products are formed. Successful ... Show more content on
Helpwriting.net ...
Also when a collision occurs they have more energy and so are more likely to be successful in
breaking and reforming bonds than when they have less energy and are moving more slowly.
Therefore the rate of the reaction will increase. As a rule of thumb when the temperature increases
by 10C, the rate of the reaction roughly doubles.
The concentration of the acid The more concentrated the solution, the more particles of reactant are
present in a given volume and the greater the chance of a collision occurring. In dilute acids, with
fewer particles the chance of collisions occurring is reduced.
Therefore if concentration is increased, the reaction rate also increases. This also applies in
reactions between two gases when increasing the pressure has the same effect as increasing the
concentration. The presence of a catalyst A catalyst increases the rate of a chemical reaction
without itself being used up. Catalysts are usually transition metals. In the presence of a catalyst,
less energy is needed by a collision in order to be successful. Therefore there are relatively more
successful collisions and so the reaction rate increases. I have decided to investigate how a change
in surface area will affect the rate of the reaction between calcium carbonate (marble chips) and
hydrochloric acid. The word equation for this reaction is:
Calcium + Hydrochloric Carbon + Water + Calcium
Carbonate Acid Dioxide Chloride
CaCO3(s) + 2HCL(aq) = CO2(G) + H2O(l) +

What is young adult literature? Essentially, young adult literature is any type of book that a
teenager or young adult chooses to read. The term adolescence novel is driven by the audience
because publishers are going to produce novels that tend to these needs. This leaves the category
very broad for authors to write. Authors believe that young adult literature tends to have a young
protagonist who deals with problems other young people would have to deal with. S.E. Hinton is a

The History of Drug Prohibition Essays
Drug prohibition was not always accepted as it is today. Indeed, until the early twentieth century,
there were few drug laws at all in the United States. Before the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914,
one could buy heroin at the corner drugstore; even Coca Cola contained small amounts of cocaine
until 1903 (Vallance 4). Some of the most proscribed drugs today were sold like candy and (quite
literally) soda pop. What caused the sudden shift to prohibition? Prohibitionists often point out that
legal drugs at the turn of the century led to an enormous drugproblem, yet they never give any
evidence that any public menace due to drugs actually existed, other than showing that the public
demanded drug laws (Trebach 45). This argument... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Still, even after the Harrison Act of 1914 drugs were seen as a primarily medical problem. Over
time, the perception of drugs changed from objects of medical addiction to articles of immorality,
until they were seen primarily as a criminal problem in the 1930 s (Vallance 5). Much of this may
have resulted from alcohol Prohibition, which accustomed the American public to substance
regulation. At the same time, the typical drug user changed. Before 1914, the average user was
typified by the heroin addict Mrs. Dubose in Harper Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird: white, middle
class, middle aged, and female. David Courtwright notes that although fictitious, Mrs. Dubose
personifies the American addict of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries #8230;her
sex, age of addiction, race, nationality, region, class, and occupation #8230;[are] typical (qtd. in
Trebach 56). As increasingly large numbers of males, minorities, and the poor began using drugs,
people s attitudes towards drugs changed. Duster notes that middle America s moral hostility
comes faster and easier when directed toward a young, lower class Negro male, than toward a
middle aged, middle class white female (21). Indeed, even drug law crusader James Inciardi
concedes that many early drug laws gained support because of racism and xenophobia (Trebach
47). Thus, a demographic shift

Animal Forms Of Communication As Less Complex Or...
As humans, we find it easy to conclude that we are the smartest, most superior beings on the
planet. What is it that makes us so certain that this is true? Animals do not speak our language, so
we make the judgment that they are less. If we look beyond our own form of verbal
communication, we may find that the domesticated animals we keep as pets are trying to
communicate with us sometimes, especially dogs. Do they not greet us at the door, running with a
wagging tail? Do they not try to warn and ward off potential intruders? Do they not want to eat
whatever it is that a person is eating, even if that means licking crumbs off the plate just before it
goes in the dish washer? Cats communicate through habits of their own they purr and hiss. Why do
we evaluate animal forms of communication as less complex or intelligent than our own? Though
we often see non humananimals as inferior, viewing their intelligence as fundamentally different
from our own, imagining them as incapable of communicating in a way similar to humans, and
focusing on differences in physical form and societal structure, humans and other animals are far
more similar than we might think. Particular similarities exist between humans and primates. In the
book Evolution and Human Behavior: Darwinian Perspectives on Human Nature, John Cartwright
writes, In terms of the amino acid sequences in a range of blood proteins, and hence the genes
responsible, we are virtually identical to chimpanzees (162 4).

Why Is Mulch Important To You Essay
If there s one singular thing you can do for their garden or landscape one simple action you can
take that could potentially bring your plants back to life and prevent current and future disasters, it
s mulching. And I m not necessarily talking about pre colored cypress bark that you see
surrounding lonely barberries in a Target parking lot. I m talking about real mulching with real,
workable materials that your plants will eventually be able to benefit from. Granted, painted chunks
of wood still have the potential to break down into the soileventually, but the process is slow and
ugly and isn t meant to serve the purposes that mulchshould be serving. So, what kinds of mulches
are best and why is mulch so good for your garden?
If you ve ever taken a hike through an undisturbed forest, or stopped to really look at what s
going on under that messy tree of yours in the fall, you ll get a better understanding of what
mulch is and what it s meant to do. Look on the ground. What do you see? Depending on the
time of year, you ll see something different. Most notably, in the fall, you ll see a colorful blanket
of spent leaves, covering everything they land on. If they do this on your lawn, you may see a
problem. In the forest, those leaves are far from a problem. They re a necessary and welcome part
of the ecosystem.
Mother Nature doesn t do anything by accident. Those fallen leaves are full of all the necessary
nutrients that the plants and animals in the soil on the forest floor need. They also provide
protection from the winter weather, offering a barrier between the soil and the freezing
temperatures above. During the growing season, the mulch keeps the soil on the forest floor
evenly moist and cool, creating a suitable environment for plants and animals to thrive and
flourish. The size and thickness of the leaf cover is easily and quickly broken down by the
organisms living in the soil, which then improves the soil and makes the nutrients from those
leaves available to the plants again, starting the cycle over.
In a controlled environment such as a garden or landscape with an artificial array of plant materials,
attempting to let everything naturally mulch itself is impossible. That job belongs to the

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and Unmanned...
UAVs Laws and Legislations The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has produced an
expedited certificate of authorization (COA) process for local law enforcement agencies to
operate unmanned aerial vehicles. The expedited COA process is part of the FAA s
reauthorization legislation the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (P. L 1 12 95) which
was signed into law by President Barack Obama on Feb. 14, 2012. Federal, state and local
government entities must obtain a COA from the FAA before flying a UAV in the national
airspace, the agency says( Dorr 2014). Under the streamlined process, COAs will be available for
operations within a defined incident perimeter throughout an agency s jurisdiction. In addition, an

( Bureau of Counterterrorism 2013 ) The conflict of expedited certificate authorization for the
operation unmanned aerial vehicles is easily assessable to act on violations of civilian rights. In the
procedure of securing a certificate of authorization, there is little to no training of individuals with
in local law enforcement to act according me with in Federal or even state privacy regulations.
There is also the possibility that UAVs that carry chemical sniffers could be totally unencumbered
by privacy protections. (Federal Aviation Administration 2013) Although the potential contribution
of UAVs to sectors such as environmental protection, law enforcement and various commercial
activities is apparent, they still seem not to be ready for civilian use. This is due to several reasons,
including e.g. civilian UAVs (CUAVs) requiring different technological solutions such as optimized
platforms, different endurance requirements, dedicated payloads and different ground control
systems. An additional important problem to be solved is the integration of UAVs in the civilian
airspace, which will require the adoption of civilian airworthiness standards and proven safety
features. Last but not least trust has to be created, both at the public sectors and the commercial
community, that CUAVs have economic advantages ( Vanclay 2003) One of the main hyposisthist
that is surrounding the inhabitation of the advantages of UAVs,

Soccer Is The Best Sport Essay
Soccer is, by far, the best sport in the world. Many might disagree with this statement, but I think
that soccer should be considered the greatest. The fans cheer louder, there is more blood, sweat,
and tears, and soccer requires you to think more than different sports. The passion between the
fans and the players is indescribable unless you experience it first hand. There are many reasons
to why soccer is the best sport, some being: it is the most popular sport around the world, it is one
of the hardest sports to learn and pick up on, and I have been playing soccer my entire life so
therefore it has to be the best. Soccer is it is the most popular sport. Soccer originated in
England, but China claimed to have also played a similar game of passing and kicking the ball into
a goal. In America, we call the sport soccer, but originally it was called football and it is still known
as football to this day in all other parts of the world.. There are twenty one professional leagues
across the world, but some of the main leagues are the MLS, or Major League Soccer, The Premier
League, UEFA Champions League, and La Liga. There are nearly sixty stadiums in England alone
and most of the largest stadiums in the world are soccer stadiums and have the capacity of over
70,000. When there is a game, the entire city becomes a party before the game, and when the
favorite team of that city wins, there is a party after the game that goes on until the team plays
again. The fans of soccer are

Tactical Decision Making Essay
The modern fire service is much in part driven by individual opinion of the appropriate strategies
and tactics to be used during given emergency incidents, many of which are stimulated by
inaccurate information, the lack of scientific evidence or the historical means of operation within
the department. In recent years, various scientific studies have been conducted by entities such as
the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Underwriters Laboratories to present
factual scientific data that is useful for making appropriate strategic and tactical decisions on the
fireground. According to Smith (2017), Strategy should be viewed as overall goals or what you
want to accomplish (p. 106) on the fireground. Furthermore, he defines tactics in his writings as
how you are going to achieve your strategies or goals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Decision making models that are widely accepted in the fire service play a significant role in the
implementation of strategies and tactics on fire grounds across the country. Scientific studies
producing reliable data have initiated discussions across the country about the decision making
models in use and have resulted in the development of new models. Each of the acronyms
discussed are useful to the fire ground operator when implemented and used appropriately. After
operating for some years using the RECEO VS model for both strategic and tactical decision
making, I currently prefer the SLICE RS model for tactical decision making. The SLICE RS model
guides the user through a sequence of tactical objectives but also allows the user to utilize critical
thinking at each incident to take the appropriate action based on knowledge gained through current
scientific data. As studies continue, scientific data may change, prompting the need for re
evaluation of the current models and the application of new models with associated

Examples Of Procedural Safeguards
According to Nancy Chi Cantalupo, writer in the University Chicago Law Journal, twenty to
twenty five percent of college women are victims of attempted or completed nonconsensual sex
(Burying Our Heads 207). In October 2014, an eighteen year old freshman at Old Dominion
University was sexually assaulted. She reported her case to the ODU PoliceDepartment where she
was treated as a suspect rather than a victim (Jane). The university police department denied this
young woman of many things such as a medical examination right away, food, drinks and even did
not allow her to use the bathroom (Jane). These factors caused her to suffer multiple injuries
mentally, emotionally, and physically (Jane). Many cases of on campus sexual assault has come...

The local police department can be a mentor to the university police department. They can help
train in trauma skills as well as investigative skills. It is important to know how to investigate a
person with little skepticism, because during trauma the too much skepticism can turn a person
away. It is already difficult for a victim to go and report a crime because it requires them to relive
that dreadful moment again, and that is why some victims are scared to go to local police
department, but this can happen with the university police as well. In the ODU vs Jane Doe case
she was interrogated with much skepticism, which had results such as depression, anxiety,
insomnia, and weight loss (Jane). On the other hand, if you investigate the victim like there is no
chance at all that they could be lying than that leave the accuser hopelessly and they could be
innocent. The accused sometimes go to the university expected to already be guilty before even
presenting their side. Nancy Chi Cantalupo, writer in Journal of College and University Law,
acknowledges in Decriminalizing Campus Institutional Responses to Peer Sexual Violence , that
universities decriminalize sexual assault crimes, and due to this, a lot of rights are lost. Due to the
matter that universities cannot enforce criminal laws, they are not required to grant full due

Dr Heidegger s Experiment Sustainable Happiness
Sustainable Happiness: Dr Heidegger s Experiment
People often look back on their youth with fondness. In youth, life is filled with opportunity,
energy, and beauty that often fades with time. In Nathaniel Hawthorne s short story Dr Heidegger
s Experiment, four elderly friends become the doctor s test subjects. Mr. Medbourne was once a
successful and wealthy merchant who lost everything in a risky trade. Colonel Killigrew wasted
his health and money with sinful pleasures . Mr. Gascoigne was once a successful politician but
was unable to change with the times, making him obsolete. The Widow Wycherly was once
young, beautiful, and sought after by all three men; however as she aged, her beauty aged as well.
As the regretful four drink the water from the Fountain of Youth, they return to being young and it
seems that their problems are solved. However, this youth and everything that goes along with it
does fade, leaving the four as unhappy as they were before, if not more so, because of their constant
search for what they had lost. Although many people find joy in their youth, Hawthorne ... Show

would be better off accepting the past. The four friends however, refused to move on, But the
doctor s four friends had taught no such lesson to themselves. They resolved to make a pilgrimage
to Florida, and quaff at morning, noon, and night, from the fountain of youth (Hawthorne 75). The
four, intoxicated by their youth, decide to devote the rest of their lives to finding the fountain in
Florida. Rather than moving on with their lives and accepting their age, the friends are forever
seeking the youth that they will never be able to obtain permanently. The friends will be constantly
lusting for their temporary youth and will never be happy with their present

  • 2. Foreign Direct Investment As A Key Component Of Economic... Foreign Direct Investment as a key component of economic globalization could play a prominent role in stimulating economic growth through capital formation, technology transfer and enhancing employment opportunities in the developing countries like Nepal. Nepal and India both have liberalized foreign investment policies that would help promote FDI in Nepal (Dahal et.al. 2004). Despite significant liberalization of the foreign investment regime and the introduction of attractive investment incentives, Nepal s achievements, both in terms of the volume of FDI and its developmental impact, failed to match national expectations (Athukorala, et.al., 2006) The country has not been able to draw on the potential technological and other contributions that FDI can make to the process of development (Pant, 2010). A restrictive FDI regime, high import tariffs, exit barriers for firms, stringent labor laws, poor quality infrastructure, centralized decision making processes, and lack of export processing zones and Export Trading House make Nepal an unattractive investment location (Regmi, 2012). Nepal s FDI potential is heavily under exploited, despite the fact that the country offers a huge potential not only for market seeking investors but also resource seeking ones (Adhikari, 2013a).. Moreover, Nepal is the worst performer in South Asia (and one of the worst ones in the world) in terms of attracting FDI (Adhikari, 2013b). The country s insurgency period in the past has also hindered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Neville s Use Of Cannibalism In Dracula The lack of preys makes them attack others of their own, hence making a regular threat of cannibalism. As it previously mentioned, Neville believes that the bacteria originated during the war. According to Clasen, this belief is a projection of human anxieties; within this context, it is a reflection of the fear of nuclear and biological war and their consequences, in idea portrayed in the novel with one of the flashbacks the protagonist has, in which Neville and his wife contemplate the idea by which the bombings of the war and vampires are related somehow. One of the main concepts present in the novel is the sexual frustration of the protagonist. He is agitated at night, when the vampires attack his house, by the female vampires standing outside his house, who are posing and thus trying to seduce him to take him out of the house, Neville is as tempted as horrified by the bodies and lips of the vampires, in the same way... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the purpose of avoiding the temptation, Neville listens to music and occupies himself by reading. Such frustration is so great, that he even almost got him killed when he got out of the house in fury. Apart from the sexual frustration, what Neville really needs is companionship, a matter shown through his desperate efforts and the huge amount of time spent to befriend with the dog, in such a desperate way the he leaves apart his research for that purpose. He feels so isolated that when he finds another survivor, he thinks it is a product of his mind, a hallucination. This lack of companionship and socialization is reflected as well in the living vampires of the novel, who at first apparently do not talk to each other, and the undead vampires that do not even have the ability to speak. The paradox of his isolation is that he is not actually alone. Yet the vampires in the novel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Persuasive Essay On Hockey Jerseys You may think that if you want to have your own NHL jersey to wear to games, sports bars, and playoff parties, you are going to have to spend a lot of money, or give up on getting a quality garment. That just isn t the case. You can now find good NHL jerseys cheap for sale on line. When the National Hockey League was established in 1917, from the ruins of the National Hockey Association, the players wore regular sweaters with numbers sewn or pinned to the back. The sweaters were not specially made, just purchased from a men s clothing store. Each team, of course, wore a different color. They are able to be made to a high standard for less money when they are made in China. Jerseys from China have all the same details that the real players jerseys do, like stitched on logos and patches. They use quality fabrics so they are durable. They don t require any special cleaning like expensive jerseys can. They look just as good, but cost you less money. In 1995, the principle of the third jersey really took off. They are called third jerseys because they are neither the regular home or away jerseys, but have a different style or design. Many of them are retro or vintage designs from the team s past. • 6. Metaphors And Figurative Language Literature Review Nowadays, metaphor is considered as influential in our everyday life and its traces are not only evident in the language but also in thought and action. The function of metaphor in language, culture, and thought has been viewed by various disciplines (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). In the discipline of linguistics, in particular, metaphor and figurative language have long been the subject of studies from many different perspectives. From a cognitive linguistic perspective, metaphor is a mental mapping (p. 1825) in the cognitive processes of thinking and reasoning of people in their everyday life (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). As noted by Tendahl and Gibbs (2008), the last century ended up with its revolutionary studies on metaphor, most significantly in the realm of cognitive science. They discuss a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can find several theories in the discipline of Linguistics including relevance theory. Relevance theory, originally proposed by Sperber and Wilson (1986 1987), is discussed in detail by Tendahl and Gibbs (2008). According to Tendahl and Gibbs, relevance theory complements cognitive linguistics in defining metaphor and its functioning. As they point out, in a cognitive linguistic perspective, people use metaphors in their language because they think metaphorically and different language configurations are viewed as conceptual processing mechanisms (p. 1825) where an operation of mapping the concepts in the mind of speakers occurs (Tendahl and Gibbs, 2008). In their view, relevance theory, both by its encoding and decoding pattern of thoughtcommunication and by its view at the intended meaning in a certain context of communication, also has a cognitive look at language and mind, or more specifically at communication and thought. We can clearly see such cognitive perspective in relevance theory as suggested by Sperber and Wilson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Gender Roles in American Society Essay Gender Roles in American Society Femininity and masculinity are topics that have been debated over in our society extensively, through psychological research and day to day interaction with people. Children learn from their parents as well as society the concept of feminine and masculine. The majority of people tend to believe that these conceptions are biological but I believe it is more cultural. From birth, female children are shaped by society as being sweet, caring, loving, and delicate and usually associated with the color pink. While male children are shaped by being tough, aggressive, and competitive and associated with the color blue. As these children grow, the boy is given a football to play with and the girl a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the early stages of a child s life the mother is the dominant figure. She really is the only figure until the child starts to play with other children. This is when children can venture away from their mother and find and develop their on own sense of self. Biology too plays a major role in the differences between male and female. Genetically, there are differing chromosomes. XY for male and XX for female. These chromosome differences account for the physical differences that men and women have. In dealing with body composition, males are more likely to be taller and more muscular. Males also have testosterone, the male sex hormone. It is said that males with high levels are more confrontational and smile less. Women that have low levels of estrogen, the female sex hormone, are said to be more disagreeable and confrontational. Maybe because men have such a huge advantage over women by being physically larger, they are supposed to be more aggressive and women having less physical strength are supposed to be the nurturers. Gender is a major cause of a person s identity. People act the way the do because of the gender that has been assigned to them. Have you ever heard someone say, It s just their nature to act like that. A sense of identity can be seen in many young children. Fate cannot be changed; it is the set of events with the inevitable result. Virgil uses the idea of fate to narrate and advance through his epic poem, but perhaps also to illustrate that the gods had originally intended for Rome to become a great and powerful empire. The king of gods, Jupiter, has chosen Aeneasand his preordained path to destiny, by leading the Trojans and creating the foundations for the Roman Empire. Aeneas and his fleet arrive on the coast on Cumae in search of the Sibyl at the Temple of Apollo. Following his father s instructions, Aeneas asks the Sibyl to gain him entrance to Dis so he may visit his father s spirit. However, in order to enter Dis with any possibility of returning, Aeneas must first locate a sign to gain him access across the Acheron River. The Sibyl then explains to Aeneas that the sign is a golden branch in a nearby forest, if the branch breaks off the tree easily then fate awards Aeneas a pass into the underworld. If the branch does not break off then Aeneas is not destined to go. A bough is hidden in a shady tree; its leaves and pliant stem are golden, set aside as sacred to Proserpina. The grove serves as its screen, and shades enclose the bough in darkened valleys. Only he may pass beneath earth s secret space who first plucks the golden leaved fruit of that tree. Lovely Proserpina ordained that this be offered her as gift. And when the first bough is torn off, a second grows again with leaves of gold, again of that same metal. So let your eyes search overhead; and when the bough is found, then pluck it down by hand as due: for if the Fates have summoned you, the bough will break off freely, easily; but otherwise, no power can overcome it, hard iron cannot help ... • 10. Literary Devices In The Most Dangerous Game By Richard... In The Most Dangerous Game , author Richard Connell uses a variety of literary device to depict the theme. He uses the main character, Rainsford, to be the character which unfolds the theme as he goes through the experience of being treated like a wild animal and becoming the prey of another human for sport. Connell uses three literary devices frequently including foreshadowing, irony and symbolism in order to support the main theme, put yourself in the shoes of the animals you hunt. Foreshadowing was a commonly used literary device the the author used in order to illustrate the point of view of Rainford, a character oblivious of what was to come in his future and what he was going to experience pertaining to emotional problems associated with hunting. Before Rainsford aborted his ship and swam to the mysterious island, he wasn t sure of what laid ahead besides remarks his shipmates made before portraying the nature of an island close the area they were sailing in. (Connell pg 1) The place has a reputation, a bad one. This shows that Rainsford is in dangerous waters, but he doesn t quite understand why. He also questions the words of his shipmates with a cleverly placed word. (Connell pg 1) Cannibals? A cannibal is when a member of a specific species eats its own flesh. • 11. Allusions Of Allusions In Blake s The Garden Of Love Short exercise paper #1 Blake s lyrical poem The Garden of Love contains several allusions that reference the first book in the Bible Genesis . During this paper, I will be discussing one instance where Blake s poem alludes to Genesis 3. To summarize, there are several instances in which Blake s poem The Garden of Love alludes to Genesis, of these I chose to focus on the chapel built in the midst and its connection to Eve s interaction with the Serpent. Blake s poem begins with the speaker visiting the Garden of Love during which they discover, A chapel was built in the midst. The speaker points out that this chapel is built/where I used to play all of this happens during the first stanza. The speaker does not indicate they watched the chapel built in fact; the speaker almost seems shocked by its presence, saw what I had never seen and it becomes clear whatever this chapel is it has altered how the speaker will continue to interact with the garden, built in the midst/where I used to play on the green . It is important to realize this chapel not only altered the garden itself, but also, has essentially replaced the green so; instead of play, there is this chapel . During the third book of Genesis, a dialogue happens concerning Eve and the Serpent. The Serpent questions Eve about the garden to which she replies, We may eat of the fruit of the trees...But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst...Ye shall not eat...lest ye die (Genesis 3:3). Phantom Limb Syndrome Phantom limb syndrome is an extraordinary condition that is caused by amputating a limb or being born without a limb (Flor, 2002); This condition affects approximately 80% to 90% of patients who have had a limb amputated (Flor, 2002). The first documented case of phantom limb syndrome was in the mid 16th century (Nikolajsen Jensen, 2001). The description was given by a French military surgeon by the name of Ambroise ParГ© (1510 1590) when he noticed that some of his injured patients would express that they were experiencing extreme painin their missing limb (Nikolajsen Jensen, 2001). Phantom limb syndrome and post amputation pain is far more common in adults than in children, this would be related to the brains rate or ability to regenerate. A child brain is going to repair much quicker than an adult, as their brains are still in rapid development (Scheinberg, 2016). Other factors can play a part and may increase the chances of a patient experiencing this condition, and some of them include: preamputation pain in the limb that was amputated, a blood clot that formed in the amputated limb, a preamputation infection, previous damage to spinal cord or peripheral nerves that supplied the affected limb, traumatic amputation, and the type of anaesthesia that was used during the operation (Scheinberg, 2016). Nikolajsen and Jensen (2001) state that in paediatric amputees, it was found that most of the children who were experiencing phantom pain, also expressed feeling pain before the operation. The symptoms that occur in amputees/people born without a limb can differ slightly, but all the symptoms are experiences in a limb that no longer exist (Scheinberg, 2016). The symptoms of phantom limb syndrome include; shooting, stabbing, and piercing sensations, pleasure, one may feel the sensation of clothing or jewelry touching the missing limb, other experience their limb feeling as though it is still attached and functioning normally, and lastly patients can experience sensations of numbness, tickling, or even a cramping sensation (Scheinberg, ... • 13. The Soviet Union Of Soviet Republics Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, former Soviet republics have been forced to undertake the harrowing task of achieving stability for their citizens and developing their own identities independent from the former hegemon. Some, such as Poland, have been successful in this regard, while others, such as Georgia, have been less fortunate. For Ukraine, a vast agricultural country with centuries old ties to Russia, answers to the questions of stability and identity have been uncertain ones. In spring 2014, following the Ukrainian Revolution in which pro Russian president Viktor Yanukovych was deposed and replaced by Olexander Turchnyov, Russian forces invaded Crimea after signing an accession treaty on March 18. Throughout the year, this conflict escalated with violence between pro Russian militants along with Russian forces and Ukrainian military and thousands of deaths. The violence in Crimea, where Russians have an ethnic majority of 58%, and eastern Ukraine began to dissipate in late September when Russian military commenced a withdrawal from Ukraine. The violence intensified again in early November when pro Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine held new elections supported by Russia and denounced by Ukraine, the United States, and the European Union. In The Flea, he showed the passion to his mistress via persuasive attitude. The tone might straightforwardly create playfulness or sinfulness; yet, the poem contains none of either. What impress readers most is situation and device. The situation between the speaker and the audience is persuasion, love or marriage. As to device, the notable parts are diction and rhetoric skills. Furthermore, unique characteristics of this poem are also an important element of his persuasive tone. First of all, the situation created by Donne is remarkable. Although there is only one ... The flea having sucked his blood and then hers, he takes a far bolder step and suggest that because their blood in now mixed in the flea s body, they are in some meaningful physical way joined already. i[i] Finally, The Flea contains two major unique characteristics. One of Donne s most successful effects is sudden contrast.ii[ii] The insect seems to be no connection with romance, but by sucking blood of two characters of the poem, the flea builds a bridge between the two persons that surprises many readers. ВЎВҐThe Flea seems particularly unerotic in character, extraordinarily preoccupied with ethical and social, particularly marital, mattersВЎK. but also transforms the sexual seduction lyric into a more serious persuasion to full affectionate and physical loving. iii[iii] The other is Donne s skill, dramatic monologue. In both line one of the first and the second stanzas, the poet began with strong voice. Later in the following lines of the two stanzas, Donne himself explained his reasons logically. The only difference is his attitude. The tone of stanza two is stronger than stanza one, and stanza three is even stronger than stanza two; therefore, in killing it the poet s mistress would commit, not only murder on him, a crime she is injured to, but suicide and sacrilege. iv[iv] To the end, The Flea describes a ... Millions of people were killed by incurable diseases, such as smallpox, rabies, et cetera before the 18th century due to lack of knowledge in developing drugs and vaccine at that time. People caught by the diseases were hopeless because they knew that no one could help them. In the mid 1800s, animal testing was introduced to drug industry by Edward Jenner (Trueman, 2002). Verbal language is not the only means of communication. We can notice a person s emotions without him saying anything because of non verbal language or body language he expressed. If we can examine body language in human, then we are also able to observe non verbal language of animals. In accordance to Charles Darwin in his book, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, many of the non verbal reactions of human in expressing emotions are identical with those of animals (Darwin, 1873). Thus, there is no reason that one, especially a scientist who has conducted a lot of experiments with animals, does not know whether an animal is suffering from mental pain or not. As psychological pains caused by animal testing offends the tested animals welfare, alternative methods must be used to replace animal testing. Animal testing not only afflicts animals being used, but also our society. A lot of harsh protests and terrorism have been done against animal testing. Those actions have caused many public losses. Plenty of innocent people have died; many unrelated private companies have been accidentally involved in the damaging acts, and numerous public facilitations have been ruined in those actions which are usually conducted by animal lovers organizations. To understand why either side is valid we must look at its values and its weaknesses, its pros and cons. The Electoral College was devised to proportionally dole out the power of selecting our executives geographically. In doing so the Electoral Collegegives otherwise marginalized portions of the U.S. population a voice. Adversely the Electoral College can be seen as an obstruction to democracyand the will of the people. Whether or not the Electoral College serves the best interests of all the people in United States is up to debate. This paper functions to reveal what validities either argument may include. The Electoral College was founded on the idea that no entity, federal or popular, should have the power to singularly determine the outcome of electing our country s executive. Madison in Federalist Paper No. 10, recognizes a faction as ...a number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adversed to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community. In a well researched and scholarly book, Doctors Joesph and Jo Blase accomplish two tasks: outlining how principals should apply instructional leadership skills while performing their jobs, and describing how principals should maintain positive relationships with their teachers while still effectively leading. As well published, credentialed authors in the field of educational leadership, the both of the Blases serve as credible sources on the topic. To accomplish their desired tasks, the authors divide the book into brief chaptersthat each explain either an attribute of instructional leadership or a method for maintaining positive principal teacher relations. According to the authors themselves, the book s shows what successful instructional leaders do to enhance teaching and learning and the effects that their behaviors have on teachers performance and well being (xiii). Through the authors careful organization of research, use of primary sources, and use of secondary sources, the book accomplishes this goal. To organize their research, the Blases first divide their information into the broad categories of Part I: The Art and Science of Instructional Leadership and Part II: How Supervisor s Behaviors Positive and Negative Affect Teachers. • 30. Relationship Between Surface Area and Rate Of Reaction Essay An Experiment To Investigate The Relationship Between Surface Area and Rate Of Reaction Introduction The rate of reaction (reaction velocity) may be defined as the rate of change of concentration of a stated reactant or product. The rate of a reaction is found by measuring the amount of a reactant used up per unit of time or the amount of a product produced per unit of time. A reaction can be made to go faster or slower by changing a number of factors. In order for a reaction to occur certain things are necessary: particles must collide with each other and the collision must have enough energy for the reaction to occur. If this happens the original bonds are broken and new bonds are formed so that new products are formed. Successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also when a collision occurs they have more energy and so are more likely to be successful in breaking and reforming bonds than when they have less energy and are moving more slowly. Therefore the rate of the reaction will increase. As a rule of thumb when the temperature increases by 10C, the rate of the reaction roughly doubles. The concentration of the acid The more concentrated the solution, the more particles of reactant are present in a given volume and the greater the chance of a collision occurring. In dilute acids, with fewer particles the chance of collisions occurring is reduced. Therefore if concentration is increased, the reaction rate also increases. This also applies in reactions between two gases when increasing the pressure has the same effect as increasing the concentration. The presence of a catalyst A catalyst increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself being used up. Catalysts are usually transition metals. In the presence of a catalyst, less energy is needed by a collision in order to be successful. Therefore there are relatively more successful collisions and so the reaction rate increases. I have decided to investigate how a change in surface area will affect the rate of the reaction between calcium carbonate (marble chips) and hydrochloric acid. The word equation for this reaction is: Calcium + Hydrochloric Carbon + Water + Calcium Carbonate Acid Dioxide Chloride CaCO3(s) + 2HCL(aq) = CO2(G) + H2O(l) + ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Indeed, until the early twentieth century, there were few drug laws at all in the United States. Before the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914, one could buy heroin at the corner drugstore; even Coca Cola contained small amounts of cocaine until 1903 (Vallance 4). Some of the most proscribed drugs today were sold like candy and (quite literally) soda pop. What caused the sudden shift to prohibition? Over time, the perception of drugs changed from objects of medical addiction to articles of immorality, until they were seen primarily as a criminal problem in the 1930 s (Vallance 5). Much of this may have resulted from alcohol Prohibition, which accustomed the American public to substance regulation. At the same time, the typical drug user changed. Before 1914, the average user was typified by the heroin addict Mrs. Dubose in Harper Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird: white, middle class, middle aged, and female. David Courtwright notes that although fictitious, Mrs. Dubose personifies the American addict of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries #8230;her sex, age of addiction, race, nationality, region, class, and occupation #8230;[are] typical (qtd. in Trebach 56). What is it that makes us so certain that this is true? Animals do not speak our language, so we make the judgment that they are less. If we look beyond our own form of verbal communication, we may find that the domesticated animals we keep as pets are trying to communicate with us sometimes, especially dogs. Do they not greet us at the door, running with a wagging tail? Do they not try to warn and ward off potential intruders? Do they not want to eat whatever it is that a person is eating, even if that means licking crumbs off the plate just before it goes in the dish washer? Cats communicate through habits of their own they purr and hiss. Why do we evaluate animal forms of communication as less complex or intelligent than our own? Though we often see non humananimals as inferior, viewing their intelligence as fundamentally different from our own, imagining them as incapable of communicating in a way similar to humans, and focusing on differences in physical form and societal structure, humans and other animals are far more similar than we might think. Particular similarities exist between humans and primates. • 41. Why Is Mulch Important To You Essay If there s one singular thing you can do for their garden or landscape one simple action you can take that could potentially bring your plants back to life and prevent current and future disasters, it s mulching. And I m not necessarily talking about pre colored cypress bark that you see surrounding lonely barberries in a Target parking lot. I m talking about real mulching with real, workable materials that your plants will eventually be able to benefit from. Granted, painted chunks of wood still have the potential to break down into the soileventually, but the process is slow and ugly and isn t meant to serve the purposes that mulchshould be serving. So, what kinds of mulches are best and why is mulch so good for your garden? If you ve ever taken a hike through an undisturbed forest, or stopped to really look at what s going on under that messy tree of yours in the fall, you ll get a better understanding of what mulch is and what it s meant to do. Look on the ground. What do you see? Depending on the time of year, you ll see something different. Most notably, in the fall, you ll see a colorful blanket of spent leaves, covering everything they land on. If they do this on your lawn, you may see a problem. In the forest, those leaves are far from a problem. They re a necessary and welcome part of the ecosystem. Mother Nature doesn t do anything by accident. Those fallen leaves are full of all the necessary nutrients that the plants and animals in the soil on the forest floor need. They also provide protection from the winter weather, offering a barrier between the soil and the freezing temperatures above. During the growing season, the mulch keeps the soil on the forest floor evenly moist and cool, creating a suitable environment for plants and animals to thrive and flourish. The size and thickness of the leaf cover is easily and quickly broken down by the organisms living in the soil, which then improves the soil and makes the nutrients from those leaves available to the plants again, starting the cycle over. In a controlled environment such as a garden or landscape with an artificial array of plant materials, attempting to let everything naturally mulch itself is impossible. That job belongs to the ... UAVs Laws and Legislations The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has produced an expedited certificate of authorization (COA) process for local law enforcement agencies to operate unmanned aerial vehicles. The expedited COA process is part of the FAA s reauthorization legislation the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (P. L 1 12 95) which was signed into law by President Barack Obama on Feb. 14, 2012. Federal, state and local government entities must obtain a COA from the FAA before flying a UAV in the national airspace, the agency says( Dorr 2014). Under the streamlined process, COAs will be available for operations within a defined incident perimeter throughout an agency s jurisdiction. In addition, an automated,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ( Bureau of Counterterrorism 2013 ) The conflict of expedited certificate authorization for the operation unmanned aerial vehicles is easily assessable to act on violations of civilian rights. In the procedure of securing a certificate of authorization, there is little to no training of individuals with in local law enforcement to act according me with in Federal or even state privacy regulations. There is also the possibility that UAVs that carry chemical sniffers could be totally unencumbered by privacy protections. (Federal Aviation Administration 2013) Although the potential contribution of UAVs to sectors such as environmental protection, law enforcement and various commercial activities is apparent, they still seem not to be ready for civilian use. This is due to several reasons, including e.g. civilian UAVs (CUAVs) requiring different technological solutions such as optimized platforms, different endurance requirements, dedicated payloads and different ground control systems. An additional important problem to be solved is the integration of UAVs in the civilian airspace, which will require the adoption of civilian airworthiness standards and proven safety features. Last but not least trust has to be created, both at the public sectors and the commercial community, that CUAVs have economic advantages ( Vanclay 2003) One of the main hyposisthist that is surrounding the inhabitation of the advantages of UAVs, ... • 43. Soccer Is The Best Sport Essay Soccer is, by far, the best sport in the world. Many might disagree with this statement, but I think that soccer should be considered the greatest. The fans cheer louder, there is more blood, sweat, and tears, and soccer requires you to think more than different sports. The passion between the fans and the players is indescribable unless you experience it first hand. There are many reasons to why soccer is the best sport, some being: it is the most popular sport around the world, it is one of the hardest sports to learn and pick up on, and I have been playing soccer my entire life so therefore it has to be the best. Soccer is it is the most popular sport. Soccer originated in England, but China claimed to have also played a similar game of passing and kicking the ball into a goal. In America, we call the sport soccer, but originally it was called football and it is still known as football to this day in all other parts of the world.. There are twenty one professional leagues across the world, but some of the main leagues are the MLS, or Major League Soccer, The Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and La Liga. There are nearly sixty stadiums in England alone and most of the largest stadiums in the world are soccer stadiums and have the capacity of over 70,000. When there is a game, the entire city becomes a party before the game, and when the favorite team of that city wins, there is a party after the game that goes on until the team plays again. • 44. Tactical Decision Making Essay The modern fire service is much in part driven by individual opinion of the appropriate strategies and tactics to be used during given emergency incidents, many of which are stimulated by inaccurate information, the lack of scientific evidence or the historical means of operation within the department. In recent years, various scientific studies have been conducted by entities such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Underwriters Laboratories to present factual scientific data that is useful for making appropriate strategic and tactical decisions on the fireground. According to Smith (2017), Strategy should be viewed as overall goals or what you want to accomplish (p. 106) on the fireground. Furthermore, he defines tactics in his writings as how you are going to achieve your strategies or goals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Decision making models that are widely accepted in the fire service play a significant role in the implementation of strategies and tactics on fire grounds across the country. Scientific studies producing reliable data have initiated discussions across the country about the decision making models in use and have resulted in the development of new models. Each of the acronyms discussed are useful to the fire ground operator when implemented and used appropriately. After operating for some years using the RECEO VS model for both strategic and tactical decision making, I currently prefer the SLICE RS model for tactical decision making. The SLICE RS model guides the user through a sequence of tactical objectives but also allows the user to utilize critical thinking at each incident to take the appropriate action based on knowledge gained through current scientific data. As studies continue, scientific data may change, prompting the need for re evaluation of the current models and the application of new models with associated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Examples Of Procedural Safeguards According to Nancy Chi Cantalupo, writer in the University Chicago Law Journal, twenty to twenty five percent of college women are victims of attempted or completed nonconsensual sex (Burying Our Heads 207). In October 2014, an eighteen year old freshman at Old Dominion University was sexually assaulted. She reported her case to the ODU PoliceDepartment where she was treated as a suspect rather than a victim (Jane). The university police department denied this young woman of many things such as a medical examination right away, food, drinks and even did not allow her to use the bathroom (Jane). These factors caused her to suffer multiple injuries mentally, emotionally, and physically (Jane). Many cases of on campus sexual assault has come... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The local police department can be a mentor to the university police department. They can help train in trauma skills as well as investigative skills. It is important to know how to investigate a person with little skepticism, because during trauma the too much skepticism can turn a person away. It is already difficult for a victim to go and report a crime because it requires them to relive that dreadful moment again, and that is why some victims are scared to go to local police department, but this can happen with the university police as well. In the ODU vs Jane Doe case she was interrogated with much skepticism, which had results such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, and weight loss (Jane). On the other hand, if you investigate the victim like there is no chance at all that they could be lying than that leave the accuser hopelessly and they could be innocent. The accused sometimes go to the university expected to already be guilty before even presenting their side. Nancy Chi Cantalupo, writer in Journal of College and University Law, acknowledges in Decriminalizing Campus Institutional Responses to Peer Sexual Violence , that universities decriminalize sexual assault crimes, and due to this, a lot of rights are lost. Due to the matter that universities cannot enforce criminal laws, they are not required to grant full due ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. Dr Heidegger s Experiment Sustainable Happiness Sustainable Happiness: Dr Heidegger s Experiment People often look back on their youth with fondness. In youth, life is filled with opportunity, energy, and beauty that often fades with time. In Nathaniel Hawthorne s short story Dr Heidegger s Experiment, four elderly friends become the doctor s test subjects. Mr. Medbourne was once a successful and wealthy merchant who lost everything in a risky trade. Colonel Killigrew wasted his health and money with sinful pleasures . Mr. Gascoigne was once a successful politician but was unable to change with the times, making him obsolete. The Widow Wycherly was once young, beautiful, and sought after by all three men; however as she aged, her beauty aged as well. As the regretful four drink the water from the Fountain of Youth, they return to being young and it seems that their problems are solved. However, this youth and everything that goes along with it does fade, leaving the four as unhappy as they were before, if not more so, because of their constant search for what they had lost.
