Civil War
SLAVERY
The burning issue that led to the disruption of the union, however, was the debate over the future of
slavery. That dispute led to secession, and secession brought about a war in which the Northern and
Western states and territories fought to preserve the Union, and the South fought to establish
Southern independence as a new confederation of states under its own constitution. In the late 18th
century, the abolitionist movement began in the north and the country began to divide over the
issue between north and south. In 1820, the Missouri Compromise banned slavery in all new
western territories, which southern states saw as a threat to the institution of slavery itself. With the
election in 1860 of Abraham Lincoln, who ran on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were those in the antislavery movement that proposed legislation that would actually
purchase the freedom of slaves, as had happened in Europe. This sort of solution would have ended
slavery, but done it without the violence and death that the Civil War brought.
In contrast, the abolitionist movement sought to end slavery by any means necessary. So, famous
abolitionist John Brown resorted to theft, and to attacks on federal officers, in his effort to end
slavery. The radical abolitionists had no interested in ending slavery in a peaceful or legal way.
They wanted to end slavery at the point of the bayonet.
SECESIONISM
Before the Civil War, the country was dividing between north and south. Issues included States
Rights but centered mostly on the issue of slavery, which was prominent in the south but
increasingly banned by northern states.
With the election in 1860 of Abraham Lincoln, who ran on a message of anti slavery, the Southern
states felt it was only a matter of time before the institution was outlawed completely. South
Carolina became the first state to officially secede from the United States on December 20, 1860.
Four months later, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana seceded as well.
Later Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee joined them, and soon afterward, the
people of these states elected Jefferson Davis as president of the newly formed

The Things They Carried
Spring Book Review In The Things They Carried, Tim O Brien tells the tale of not about war,
but rather about war s effect on one s mentality. Ultimately, this novel is built on a foundation of
the items that the soldiers of the Vietnam War carried. Whether it was the way Jimmy Cross uses
the pebble to escape from his duties as a soldier or when Norman Bowker realizes that courage
comes form within, not from receiving a Silver Star; O Brien uses baggage as a symbol throughout
the book to teach that war does in fact change people. These possessions were not just materialistic,
they made up the soldiers attributes, made up the soldiers persona and made up the soldier. In the
beginning of the story we are introduced to Lieutenant... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It makes things vivid. When you re afraid, really afraid, you see things you never saw before, you
pay attention to the world. You make close friends. You become part of a tribe and you share the
same blood you give it together, you take it together. (O Brien, 220)
An underlying of this book is the value of friendship. The bond that these men formed with each
other in the heat of battle is incomprehensible to those who have not experienced warfare for
themselves. It helped them to survive, exclude anyone who was outside their group, and help the
men of Alpha Company to cope with the war after they returned to the United States. Without the
bonds of friendship, none of the men of Alpha Company would have survived mentally or
physically the strains and trauma of the Vietnam War.
The Things They Carried takes place during the late 1960s and 1980s. The end of the play is set
in Massachusetts, while the rest of the book focuses on Vietnam. The setting is a significant part
of the story because it is during the Vietnam War and is central to the story. This aspect of the
novel is what makes it significant to American history. In The Things They Carried, it brought to
the attention of readers what the soldiers carried with them to shield off illness, stay warm,
protect their comrades, to kill the enemy s soldiers and to remember their loved ones at home. For
example Kiowa always took along his New Testament and a pair of moccasins for silence. Cross

If there is a problem a firm should always communicate with the supplier to look at the problem
and solve it together instead of assuming who is fault the problem is. If Kevin did not talk to the
supplier, the firm would find another supplier and the problem still not solved. Therefore, a good
customer will always communicate and find a solution to any problem.
6.Explain the role of performance measurement in managing supply chain activities.

supply chain?
We have to understand that supply chain is a strategy and a process that have many steps for any
product to produce. Every step is measured, and the whole process is measured also from the start
until end. Therefore, if any changes occurred in any of the steps, it will effects the other steps and

The adolescent phase is characterized by diverse and dynamic physiological and psychosocial
changes. One of the most integral changes, as elicited by the authors, is the response to stressors.
With specific regard to this stage, the author denotes that the stage is characterized by major shifts
in HPA (hypothalamic pituitary adrenal) axis reactivity that amounts to escalated induced hormonal
reactions. The author further explains that the factors that mediate such changes with respect to
stress reactivity, as well as the consequent impacts that they may have on an individual, are yet to
be substantiated. However, this literary research establishes that the stress sensitive cortical as well
as limbic brain areas that are always in constant growth, especially during this stage, are extremely
vulnerable to the changes that are prevalent. On the other hand, the perturbations with respect to the
adolescent may in turn contribute to heightened psychological dysfunctions inclusive of depression,
drug abuse, and anxiety.
The adolescent stage is faced with continued brain growth and maturity. These changes are
intuitively core in the emotional and physiological behaviors of adolescents. These authors
establish that the stressors that are pertinent during this developmental stage have an

Analysis Of The Movie The Rye
Catcher in the Rye was a phenomenal work of literature. The novel has been able to withstand
the test of time without ever making it to the big screen. Present day with a movie of the
bestselling novel is coming soon, every detail must amaze the avid reader of the book. This
includes, lighting, a flawless director, a cluster of A list actors, outstanding scenery, and last but
certainly not least, a soundtrack that will knock the viewer of the movie into a sense of
amazement. A soundtrack can completely devastate a movie. If there is a scene where a
character in the scene is crying because they lost their friend, it would definitely be strange if
music in the background was Can t Touch This by M.C. Hammer. Soundtracks tell the audience
what to feel whether it would be fear or excitement. With a soundtrack playing a critical position
in a movie, the songs that have been chosen have transcended more than just the scenes they are
played in, and turned into the embodiment of some of the major themes in the movie. A great
selection for the opening song would be a song by Chance the Rapper called Finish Line . In this
song, Chance the Rapper appears to just spout sentences that just come to head like the stream of
consciousness like Holden. When Holden goes on his particular tangents he usually is trying to get
to a specific point, a finish line. Coincidentally, Holden during the entire book has been trying to
come to some finish line . With this song as the opening, it

Boogie Nights Essay
Boogie Nights
Boogie Nights is a film that aptly embodies the extravagant decadence of morals during the disco
era, while also creating empathy for the debauched innocents who find themselves caught up in a
lifestyle of hard core sex, drugs and rock and roll. Sadly, while attempting to replace the loving
family relationships they are lacking and in their search for self worth, these characters pay the
highest price for fame. The film deftly takes the viewer to the seedy underside of the pornography
business. But, like many of the young people who find themselves entangled in it, it is first
introduced as a life of each and luxury with many good times and no consequences. The film
portrays the life of a unique young man who gives himself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Boogie Nights is wonderfully written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and succeeds in
introducing in its viewer to a new perspective on a world often viewed socially with scorn. After
subtly choreographing the introduction of the relationships between characters, the film then
highlights a slice of each individual s life, giving the viewer a further insight into their motivations
and/or regrets. Each character is searching for something that is missing in their lives, and the
pornography business seems to provide them with what they are lacking. This is evidenced when
Dirk s need for a loving mother figure is fulfilled by Amber, who desperately wants to be reunited
with her estranged son.
Amber (Julianne Moore), a veteran in the business, quickly takes Dirk under her protective
maternal wing by providing him with something he has never had, the unconditional love of a
mother. Amber s maternal displays of affection are incestuously infected at best, but they still
manage to portray a deep and much needed love between the two. Young Dirk is given every
indulgence a 17 year old boy could dream of, including the invitation to mindlessly couple with one
of the bright young porn stars, Roller

Deaf Perceptions Of The Deaf
Deaf Perceptions of Animacy
Deaf culture has long been misunderstood and misrepresented within America, in part due to the
significant language barrier between the American Deaf and their hearing counterparts. Though it
is often thought to be nothing more than an elevated form of charades, American Sign Language
(ASL) is a language like any other not only with its own grammatical syntax, phonology, and
morphology, but also in its compliance to the Sapir Whorf hypothesis. Created by Edward Sapir
and Benjamin Lee Whorf, the hypothesis exists in two degrees: weak and strong. The former
claims that language shapes our thoughts, and thus our culture, while the latter version claims that
language not only shapes our thoughts and our culture, it creates them. Though there is debate
surrounding the degree to which the hypothesis extends, it is undoubtable that it is applicable to
Deaf culture and its use of ASL as a first language in prelingually Deaf individuals. Using the Sapir
Whorf hypothesis as its theoretical framework, this research proposes to investigate how the
absence of copular verbs within ASL shapes Deaf perception of animacy and how such perceptions
manifest within Deaf culture.
Language was long thought to be a passageway passagewayfor thought; a go between that allowed
one to translate their pre existing ideas into a communicable form via sounds, writing, and gesture
(Cultural Encounters). However, this understanding shifted upon the introduction of the Sapir Whorf

The Truth About the Music Industry Essay
Music is universally known as an expression of emotion, rebellion against the man, a way of life, a
random collection of sounds, an annoying thing kids listen to, or even a vacation from everything,
but in reality music is free of all definition. The industry involved in buying, selling and recording
of music has grown so old, treacherous, and ignorant that it can not figure out the steps it needs to
evolve with the rapidly expanding music industry. Musicians and fans alike are screaming about the
dire need of some modern day innovation in the market. Sadly the monstrous corporations that

As a band we have done some research of studio time and what it costs to have a record
published and sold in stores. I understand that music is hard to make a living off of because its
hard enough to just pay for the things your band needs and that record labels lose a lot of money
in trying to finance an album that has such a high chance of failure. But major Record labels are
creating a monopoly of the music industry which limits the innovation and advancement other
minor labels or musicians could provide by taking away competition. The market is dominated by
the Big Three (Sony, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group) who continuously buy out
competition and all have many smaller companies who have front names to cover up the fact
that they are owned by the larger corporation. Ten years ago there were five major companies
that controlled the market place, in the beginning of 2005 Sony and BMG, Bertelsmann Music
Group, decided to form a 50/50 partnership that would spread worldwide. Together they
controlled a vast majority of American music and the only place in the world that was not apart
of this corporation was Japan because the business would be affected too much. Then in 2008
BMG announced that they were not going to renew the contract because of falling sales which
would have been really bad for Sony financially, so they decided to buy BM s portion of the
company for 1.2 billion, which included all of BMG s record

Changes In African American Culture
All throughout American history, there have been many conflicts involving equality and obeying
the social norms. Women and African Americans are the citizens that have faced the most
adversity in these problems, but they both also have overcame these adversities and made
changes that would go on to change the nation forever. Before World War II, women faced
pressure from society to stay at home and support a family while their husbands worked and had
fun, and they lacked the rights and respect that men were already granted. Also before World War
II, African Americans were isolated from society and had no rights, until the Harlem Renaissance

education, but suddenly they were going to college to meet a husband, or they were not going
to college at all, as they feared higher education would make marriage more difficult (Friedan,

five kids, live in a suburban neighborhood where they could kiss their husband goodbye as they
left for work and they could cook and clean while their children were at school. Many women
even turned down job opportunities and claimed it was because all they ever wanted was to be a
housewife (Friedan, 1963). However, women slowly began to realize their conformity was not
what they wanted for themselves at all. In the 1960 s, many housewives reported that they had felt
there was no point in their day to day routines, they had felt depressed in their own homes without a
clue why, and getting so angry with their children it scared them. These women were afraid to
admit that they wanted more for themselves besides their husband and children (Friedan, 1963).
However, women were able to fight this expectation through the sexual liberation movement. The
women were empowered by this movement because it gave them more freedom to do what they

A Mission Statement For A Strategic Planning
In formulating a process for undertaking a strategic plan for, say the veterinary services
organization mentioned in my course paper and presentation, a first step would be formulating at
least a mission statement for the organization. Since the veterinary clinic in question had not
formalized a mission statement its mission was perhaps nebulous or up for debate. Berman
suggests that the original mission statement might be revisited during the design phase (please see
the following below), however, if none is in place prior to the start of strategic planningthen
perhaps an attempt to develop one at the start of the strategic planning process is advisable, even
if it were to be revisited and modified during the process. As the Chinese proverb states,
The mission
statement allows the organization to develop specific goals and programs and serve a purpose in
the strategic planning process.
Berman states in Chapter 4, the purpose of strategic planning is change, and is therefore a
process. This process, he continues, is typically made up of four phases. These four phases are
preplanning, research, design and implementation. This process helps the organization to align
priorities to changing conditions and opportunities. In the case of the veterinary services
organization, it was poised for change and that change would be best pursued using a strategic
planning process. The clinic was ready for new goals and strategies, and needed to create a shared

Now for the side of nutmeg of which I m sure most of you were not aware. Did you know that
nutmeg can be considered a drug due to the effects it has on the human mind? Nutmeg contains the

Euripides in the early 400 s BC that follows the family of Orestes. While Iphigenia Among the

commits some other such deed. While the reversal and the recognition components cause the
audience fear and anxiety, suffering bring out the emotion of pity in the hearts of the viewers
who are sympathizing with the character. There are several incidences of suffering in the plot.
The most prevalent one, again, is Iphigenia about to kill Orestes. Even the chorus laments this
tragic deed and they cry out I cry for you, for your end marked out, the bloody rain of lustral
water. Orestes replies that his death needs no pity. Although there is no physical suffering, the
audience still feels pity for Orestes because he believes he is about to die, until the recognition
occurred. The next major part of suffering occurs towards the end of the book as Orestes,
Iphigenia, and Pylades attempt to escape the barbaric lands by pretending to do a cleansing ritual. A
fight broke out between the barbarians and the Greeks as they both wanted control over the ship. A
messenger recounts the event for the king, Thoas by stating then taking a stand on the hill we
fought more cautiously and pelted with rocks. But archers

The Effects Of Elevated Carbon Dioxide ( Co2 ) Essay
2. Impact of Elevated Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a trace gas accounting for about 0.039 per cent or 390 ppm currently.
CO2 concentration increases by 1 to 3 ppm every year primarily because of burning of fossil fuels.
In future, by 2100 the atmospheric CO2 concentration should reach 600 to 750 ppm. Plants are
directly influenced by increase in CO2 concentration; and increase in CO2 affects many
physiological processes like photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, reproductive processes, and
yield. CO2 diffuses from the atmosphere into leaves, via., stomata into mesophyll cells,
intercellular spaces, cells, and finally reach chloroplast for photosynthetic process. Increasing
CO2 concentration in the atmosphere will enhance the photosynthesis and dry matter production.
The response to CO2 varies among species mainly by the enzyme RuBisCo (RuBP). C3 plants
readily react by increasing the activity of RuBP carboxylase and by reducing the activity of
RuBP oxygenase. Increase in photosynthesis by 25% 75% was observed over doubling of
atmospheric CO2. C4 plants show little response to elevated CO2. Crassulacean Acid Metabolism
(CAM) plants also showed an increase in photosynthetic rate. The increasing concentration of CO2
by burning of fossil fuels can be reduced by improving the carbon fixation in the plants. Short term
exposure of CO2 on plants shows increased photosynthesis, whereas long term exposure shows
variation in photosynthesis and also plant growth.

Andromache In EuripidesTiger At The Gates
Andromache vengefully curses Helen, calling her an evil incarnate, a curse on both barbarians
and Greeks and one whose beautiful eyes brought ugly destruction to the noble fields of Phrygia
(Euripides. TTW.781 783). As a female, soon to be slave of Greek enemy forces, she knows she
can do no more than curse; at this point in the time, she must accept a fate of servitude or death.
The word Andromache stems from бјЂОЅО®ПЃ,man, and ОјО¬П‡ОїОјО±О№, to battle or
dispute (Liddell).
Her characteristics and actions in Tiger at the Gates appropriately reflect the apparent meaning of
her name: one who fights or disputes with a man. In the beginning of the play, pro war and anti
war sides are swiftly drawn in Troy, with the old men rallying for war and women calling for
peace. Andromache is quick to establish her position, along with Hecuba, against war and against
the men. Although she does not lead the anti war argument (it is Hector and Hecuba who do so), she
calmly disputes with Priam in a logical manner, albeit sometimes snarky manner. She
acknowledges Priam s fondness for women and so, asks him to listen to what they have to say.
She follows this by judiciously asking how their country will be made stronger by sending the
vigorous and brave men of Troy to their deaths (Giradoux 21 22). This interaction not only
illustrates her wisdom and moral strength, but her desire for peace above all. She knows all too
well the bitter tragedies and bleak destructions war will bring, as

Figurative Language In Anne Bradstreet s To My Dear And...
Anne Bradstreet s poem, To My Dear and Loving Husband, is a small poem wherein she s
revealing her never ending love, devotion, and appreciation for her spouse. The fact that she was
born around the seventeenth century could mean it is puritan culture for women to remain
reserved, regardless of how they may truly feel; however, she makes it her obligation to make her
husbandaware of feelings, whether positive or negative. She uses figurative language and
declarative tone through imagery, repetition, and paradoxes to send her message. To My Dear and
Loving Husband can be interpreted in many ways by many different people depending how it is
initially read. This uncertainty allows the poem to be interpreted on a surface level and on a deeper
level.
One can sense the sincere meaning in poem on a literal level. A literal meaning of
Bradstreet s comes across when analyzed solely on the surface. It is initially assumed that she is
expressing her sincerest, undying love for husband. The poem opens with two if/then statements,
which sets up quite a logical tone. In the first line of her poem she states, If ever two were one,
then surely we (1). This line entertains the belief that she and her husband are one entity; what
happens to one, will happen to the other. Also, the speaker says that if two people were ever one
person, then she and her husband surely are. In the second, she says that if ever any man has been
loved by his wife, her husband has been. (2). As stated

Deaf Culture And Bilingual Signs
I have a friend by the name of Karen that while living in the United States lives in a completely
different culture than us. Karen is deaf. When we first met we mainly communicated by text or the
online community that brought us together. While I knew a little sign language it was not enough
to keep a steady conversation. Karen helped me learn some signs, I took classes to teach me more
about deaf cultureand conversational signs. I went from being able to carry on a conversation with
my voice and ears to having to learn to watch someone s hands and be behind in translating in my
head what they were trying to say. At first I thought that this would be my greatest challenge in
learningto communicate well with deaf people, but then I found out that they also use a lot of
facial expressions, different sentence structure, and even almost set up a scene when telling a story
with the location of their hands and only really tell you who they are speaking about once before
placing them in the scene.

This means that unlike other methods of damping, such as constrained layer damping, the dynamic
response and material properties are unaffected by its addition into the system. Furthermore, many
applications require a damping system that will not degrade in performance over time. This is not
the case for other viscous dampers; for instance, many dampers require a viscous liquid which may
leak over time. These two points are just a few of the many advantages offered by eddy current
damping systems. The most widely researched and well developed area of eddy current damping
systems falls in the category of magnetic braking. While the research in this area will be
thoroughly discussed, the literature is very dense and every paper cannot be reviewed. The work
in magnetic braking will be presented first, followed by studies into eddy current damping of
rotating machinery, and finally a wide range of research using eddy currents for dynamic systems
will be presented. The concept of using eddy currents for damping purposes has been known for a
considerable time, with manuscripts dating to the late 1800s. Therefore, the history of the eddy

Difference Between Administrative And Administrative Law
Constitutional and administrative law both govern the affairs of the state. Administrative law, an
area of law that gained early sophistication in France, was until well into this century largely
unrecognized in the United Kingdom as well as the United States. To the early English writers on
administrative law, there was virtually no difference between administrative law and constitutional
law. This is evident from the words of Keith: It is logically impossible to distinguish administrative
from constitutional law and all attempts to do so are artificial. Some jurists like Felix Frankfurter
even went as far as to call it illegitimate and exotic . Due to this lack of clarity, it will be vital to
observe the views of jurists and scholars on the difference between administrative law and
constitutional law. According to Holland, constitutional law describes the various organs of the
government at rest, while administrative law describes them in motion. Holland contends that the
structure of the executive and the legislature comes within the purview of constitutional law
whereas their functioning is governed by administrative law. Jennings puts forward another view,
which says that administrative law deals with the organization, functions, powers and duties of
administrative authorities while constitutional law deals with the general principles relating to the
organization and powers of the various organs of the State and their mutual relationships and
relationship of these

Strategic Rouling In Basketball
Strategic fouls occur when a competitor in an athletic contest deliberately and openly breaks a
rule expecting to be penalized and with willingness to accept the penalty. In basketball, teams that
are losing will usually deliberately foul the opposing team to stop the clock. A lot of people in the
basketball world hate this tactic, they feel like strategic fouling is a violation. Some believe that it
is ethical, because it is part of a thought process. Coaches are starting to implement strategic fouling
into their practices. It has become a crucial part of the gameof basketball. Fans never want to see
their hometown team down by two with twenty seconds left in the game, and choose to allow
the other team to dribble the ball until the clock expires. Choosing between giving up, or fouling
the other team and hoping they miss the free throws so that you are able to score and win the
games will always be an easy choice to make. Coaches and fans would describe that as giving up,
because basketball is a sport where anything can happen at any given moment so you have to have
the mentality that there is always a winning possibility. Tracy McGrady (Use to be and NBA...

The single most important element in getting a good underwater picture is to get close to your

Essay On The Catcher In The Rye Moral Laws
Moral laws, an absolute principle defining the criteria of right action, are rules by which mankind
govern themselves. The laws are general basic rules by which the world is supposed to follow in
order to create a fair, just and safe environment for everyone to live in. Oftentimes, many books,
plays, songs and speeches have been condemned by speaking against the unspoken laws and often
encouraging others to do so as well. The Catcher in the Rye, written by J.D. Salinger is one of many
examples where a book challenges traditional teachings throughout its content and as a result, is
banished from various groups and organizations around the world. In the novel The Catcher in the

John Macarthur s The Myth Of Creationism
Introduction John Macarthur is a best selling author and pastor of Grace Community Church in
Sun Valley, California. He is the current president of The Master s College and Seminary. He also
has a national syndicated radio program Grace to You. I believe the author s intention was to
debunk the myth of evolution. John MacArthur addresses creation from a Biblical standpoint. The
book targets a primarily a Christian audience and makes a strong case for a literal six day creation.
This is not a book that fundamentally concentrates on persuading unbelieving evolutionists of
creationism, yet rather it focuses on convincing Christians who trust that in some type of
advancement, (for example, old earth creationism or the Gap Theory) that the primary perusing of
Genesis one and two is a strict perusing. MacArthur constructs a significant part of the book with
respect to the view that Evolution is itself a religion that is entirely contradicted to Christianity.
Creationism and Evolution, along these lines, can never be blended. We should have faith in it is
possible that either.
Subsequent to giving numerous reasons why Evolutionism is contradictory to God and His
outline, the book spends a section on each of the days of creation. In every part, the creator
demonstrates why something besides an exacting six day creation is outlandish. In this manner, he
gives important cases of the miracles and wonders of creation. A large part of the book is centered
around disproving

Examples Of Satire In The Butter Battle Book
Satire of The Butter Battle Book.
Dr. Seuss, an amazing writer who showed the world of satire and literature to all ages. Books
such as The Lorax, The Foot book and The Butter Battle Book are perfect examples of that.
Seuss, a man known for his creative vision and use of words, made these books a satire gold
mine! We already know about his rhymes but Seuss was also extremely good at using
exaggeration. Don t forget his amazing use of onomatopoeias or his profound use of repetition. I
could go on forever but the fact is Dr Seuss and his creative mind has an amazing talent for using
satire to make his books come to life. To make his books stick around for so long and to open the
minds of his reader to the world of satire and the amazing world of literature.
This creative talent is most clearly shown by the uses of exaggeration all throughout the book
The Butter Battle. Whether it s the fact that these two races are fighting over what side they
butter their bread. Or the fact that each side believes one is worse because of that fact. No
matter where you look in this book, there will always be a use of exaggeration! One being, So
you cant trust a Zook who spreads his bread underneath! Every Zook must be watched! He has
kinks in his soul! (Seuss). This quote is a perfect example of exaggeration, it s very obvious that
no one would have kinks in their soul because of how they butter their bread. Or that every Zook
has to be watched! Another great example would be the line, I ll blow you up he yelled, into
pork and wee beans (Seuss). Now we all know that you cant blow someone up into pork and wee
beans! It s just physically impossible but that doesn t stop Dr. Seuss from using it and using it
effectively. To sum this all up, it s very easy to see that exaggeration is just one of the few pieces
of satire Dr. Seuss uses. But it is used extremely effective and makes the reader more interested and
gives them a few laughs in the process!
In addition to exaggeration, Seuss has an incredible knack for using repetition that makes the
reader more engaged. Makes the reader want to see what that next funky word will be, what goofy
sentence will follow. This simple piece of satire has immense power! With just a few

Damnation of a Canyon

He seems to argue the В‘wheelchair ethos of the wealthy, upper middle class American slob .
Well, excuse the people who were born paralyzed from the waist down, and would like to
experience the forces nature in its natural state of beauty and grace. He seems to generalize the
typical population of people who visit Lake Powell on an unscientific basis, upper middle class
American slobs. So does that mean that a lower class family doesn t have the money to do such
recreational activity? And that we are slobs because we like to view nature in its own
environment? One last point in which should be heard is that, Edward Abbey states that now
that the river is closed up people cannot get a raft, spend about forty dollars, give up 7 10 days,
and rely only on the goodness of fresh catfish just to float down a river. In today s society people
don t have time. We would rather spend the hundreds of dollars to get a nice speedboat, buy real
food, and only take maybe the weekend to enjoy the great outdoors. We enjoy the freshness of a
shower everyday, going to the bathroom with flushable device, eating food with the right bit of
garlic taste, in other words the comfort of home. Even if they did take down the dam and offer
such rafting trips, do you honestly think a person could leave their cell phone at home? In
conclusion, I do think that Edward Abbey made a great

By Erich Maria Remarque And All Quiet On The Western Front...
War is a huge part of world history and will always be a part of people s lives. War has been
conveyed in many different ways such as books, songs, poetry and movies. Some of these
representations create a positive picture of war and others give more of a negative depiction which
challenges us to question the value of warfare. The novel composed by Erich Maria RemarqueAll
Quiet on The Western Front(AQOTWF) and the poem I Was Only 19 by John Schumann
characterises the same experiences of war. Both composers use various language techniques and
descriptions to highlight the impact of war on individuals and generations. The novel and song
primarily show the reader a principled notion of the impact of young lives in warfare and the
brutality... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many boy soldiers fought in world war one, which impacted their innocence as they sacrificed
their early adulthood. Countless soldiers were still in school when they were recruited I am
young, I am twenty years of age; but I know nothing of life except despair, death, fear and the
combination of completely mindless superficiality with an abyss of suffering . The repetition
and personalisation illustrate the subjective impact of war on an innocent twenty year old. The
personification of surrendering our individual personalities more completely than we would
ever have believed possible shows that war takes away all parts of an individual s personality
and makes them appear like an object in the frontline of warfare. The soldiers became confused
of what they were throughout the book we are forlorn like children, and experienced like old
men, we are crude and sorrowful and superficial I believe we are lost the metaphor used portrays
the message of the soldiers feeling misplaced in the world as they looked like children, but they
acted like old men. The soldiers lost their youth and their identities through the brutality of

The Individual in Judaism and Hinduism
Through the Bhagavad Gita and the Book of Job we see the similar ways that different religions
affirm that the individual can t have the same level of knowledge as the divine. We also,
however, see that while Hinduism offers an explanation for this knowledge disparity, and offers
a path of empowerment that allows the individual to strive for the knowledge level of the divine,
Judaism simply deems that we are insignificant beings when compared to God, and that we can t
ever achieve nearly the same amount of knowledge as God. The Book of Job tells those who
consider the bible to be a holy text, namely Jewish and Christian people, the story of Job. His
story tells us that we, as individual human beings, are lesser beings than God and can t know as
much as God. At the end of the story, after hearing God mention the greatness of his creations,
Job finally breaks and admits that he was wrong to question God, as Job, an individual human
being, has a limited amount of knowledge compared to God. While God is pleased with this
response from the previously dubious Job, he is not happy with Zophar, Eliphaz, and Bildad for
claiming to know why God acted in the manner in which he did while they were consoling Job.
God relents however, and forgives them after Job prays for them. God is so delighted with Job for
withstanding all of the punishments Satan had put forth upon him that he rewarded Job with two
times more of everything he had lost, including his children. This ending to the

Comparing War Poems Essays
Comparing War Poems Died of Wounds and Suicide in the Trenches are two poems, which I will
be comparing the similarities and differences, which were written by the same author. Both these
poems were written by a person called Siegfried Sasson, who wrote most of his poems during the
World War One, which outlined how bad the war was to those at home after suffering from being
Shell Shocked. I will be comparing the language it uses, ideas it contains and the way it is
structured between both poems, which Siegfried Sasson uses to demonstrate that war is evil, and
should be stopped. The theme in Died of Wounds is that soldiers become shell shocked and go
insane. They also suffer from mental and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the forth line of Died of Wounds the author says He did the business well where business is a
metaphor, for it is the earnest of the wounded solider to draw attention to himself. Also on the
last line of Died of Wounds the author describes dead soldier as a slight wound where he is
comparing a dead solider to a small wound, and therefore it does not matter, and he is also
comparing the country to a solider, which is hardly notices a slight wound. There is also some
similarity in Suicide in the Trenches where Siegfried Sasson describes the trenches as if it is
like hell meaning that war was like a place where young people went and got themselves killed.
On the first line of Died of Wounds, Siegfried Sasson wrote Wet White , which is alliteration,
which is a type of sound device. He also does this on the third line, ninth line and the last line. This
makes the poem sound better. There is also some similarity in Suicide in the Trenches, where the
author also uses this device to make the poem catchier but instead uses different letters to make it
sound different and better. There is also another similarity in both poems where there are no
assonances, which is the same as alliteration but it does not occur in consonants

  • 2. Civil War SLAVERY The burning issue that led to the disruption of the union, however, was the debate over the future of slavery. That dispute led to secession, and secession brought about a war in which the Northern and Western states and territories fought to preserve the Union, and the South fought to establish Southern independence as a new confederation of states under its own constitution. In the late 18th century, the abolitionist movement began in the north and the country began to divide over the issue between north and south. In 1820, the Missouri Compromise banned slavery in all new western territories, which southern states saw as a threat to the institution of slavery itself. With the election in 1860 of Abraham Lincoln, who ran on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were those in the antislavery movement that proposed legislation that would actually purchase the freedom of slaves, as had happened in Europe. This sort of solution would have ended slavery, but done it without the violence and death that the Civil War brought. In contrast, the abolitionist movement sought to end slavery by any means necessary. So, famous abolitionist John Brown resorted to theft, and to attacks on federal officers, in his effort to end slavery. The radical abolitionists had no interested in ending slavery in a peaceful or legal way. They wanted to end slavery at the point of the bayonet. SECESIONISM Before the Civil War, the country was dividing between north and south. Issues included States Rights but centered mostly on the issue of slavery, which was prominent in the south but increasingly banned by northern states. With the election in 1860 of Abraham Lincoln, who ran on a message of anti slavery, the Southern states felt it was only a matter of time before the institution was outlawed completely. South Carolina became the first state to officially secede from the United States on December 20, 1860. Four months later, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana seceded as well. Later Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee joined them, and soon afterward, the people of these states elected Jefferson Davis as president of the newly formed ... • 3. The Things They Carried Spring Book Review In The Things They Carried, Tim O Brien tells the tale of not about war, but rather about war s effect on one s mentality. Ultimately, this novel is built on a foundation of the items that the soldiers of the Vietnam War carried. Stress and the developing adolescent brain. Neuroscience, 249, 162 171. The adolescent phase is characterized by diverse and dynamic physiological and psychosocial changes. One of the most integral changes, as elicited by the authors, is the response to stressors. With specific regard to this stage, the author denotes that the stage is characterized by major shifts in HPA (hypothalamic pituitary adrenal) axis reactivity that amounts to escalated induced hormonal reactions. The author further explains that the factors that mediate such changes with respect to stress reactivity, as well as the consequent impacts that they may have on an individual, are yet to be substantiated. However, this literary research establishes that the stress sensitive cortical as well as limbic brain areas that are always in constant growth, especially during this stage, are extremely vulnerable to the changes that are prevalent. On the other hand, the perturbations with respect to the adolescent may in turn contribute to heightened psychological dysfunctions inclusive of depression, drug abuse, and anxiety. The adolescent stage is faced with continued brain growth and maturity. These changes are intuitively core in the emotional and physiological behaviors of adolescents. These authors establish that the stressors that are pertinent during this developmental stage have an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Deaf Perceptions Of The Deaf Deaf Perceptions of Animacy Deaf culture has long been misunderstood and misrepresented within America, in part due to the significant language barrier between the American Deaf and their hearing counterparts. Though it is often thought to be nothing more than an elevated form of charades, American Sign Language (ASL) is a language like any other not only with its own grammatical syntax, phonology, and morphology, but also in its compliance to the Sapir Whorf hypothesis. Created by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf, the hypothesis exists in two degrees: weak and strong. The former claims that language shapes our thoughts, and thus our culture, while the latter version claims that language not only shapes our thoughts and our culture, it creates them. Though there is debate surrounding the degree to which the hypothesis extends, it is undoubtable that it is applicable to Deaf culture and its use of ASL as a first language in prelingually Deaf individuals. Using the Sapir Whorf hypothesis as its theoretical framework, this research proposes to investigate how the absence of copular verbs within ASL shapes Deaf perception of animacy and how such perceptions manifest within Deaf culture. Language was long thought to be a passageway passagewayfor thought; a go between that allowed one to translate their pre existing ideas into a communicable form via sounds, writing, and gesture (Cultural Encounters). • 21. The Effects Of Elevated Carbon Dioxide ( Co2 ) Essay 2. Impact of Elevated Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a trace gas accounting for about 0.039 per cent or 390 ppm currently. CO2 concentration increases by 1 to 3 ppm every year primarily because of burning of fossil fuels. In future, by 2100 the atmospheric CO2 concentration should reach 600 to 750 ppm. Plants are directly influenced by increase in CO2 concentration; and increase in CO2 affects many physiological processes like photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, reproductive processes, and yield. CO2 diffuses from the atmosphere into leaves, via., stomata into mesophyll cells, intercellular spaces, cells, and finally reach chloroplast for photosynthetic process. Increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere will enhance the photosynthesis and dry matter production. The response to CO2 varies among species mainly by the enzyme RuBisCo (RuBP). C3 plants readily react by increasing the activity of RuBP carboxylase and by reducing the activity of RuBP oxygenase. Increase in photosynthesis by 25% 75% was observed over doubling of atmospheric CO2. C4 plants show little response to elevated CO2. Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) plants also showed an increase in photosynthetic rate. The increasing concentration of CO2 by burning of fossil fuels can be reduced by improving the carbon fixation in the plants. Short term exposure of CO2 on plants shows increased photosynthesis, whereas long term exposure shows variation in photosynthesis and also plant growth. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Andromache In EuripidesTiger At The Gates Andromache vengefully curses Helen, calling her an evil incarnate, a curse on both barbarians and Greeks and one whose beautiful eyes brought ugly destruction to the noble fields of Phrygia (Euripides. TTW.781 783). As a female, soon to be slave of Greek enemy forces, she knows she can do no more than curse; at this point in the time, she must accept a fate of servitude or death. The word Andromache stems from бјЂОЅО®ПЃ,man, and ОјО¬П‡ОїОјО±О№, to battle or dispute (Liddell). Her characteristics and actions in Tiger at the Gates appropriately reflect the apparent meaning of her name: one who fights or disputes with a man. In the beginning of the play, pro war and anti war sides are swiftly drawn in Troy, with the old men rallying for war and women calling for peace. Andromache is quick to establish her position, along with Hecuba, against war and against the men. Although she does not lead the anti war argument (it is Hector and Hecuba who do so), she calmly disputes with Priam in a logical manner, albeit sometimes snarky manner. She acknowledges Priam s fondness for women and so, asks him to listen to what they have to say. She follows this by judiciously asking how their country will be made stronger by sending the vigorous and brave men of Troy to their deaths (Giradoux 21 22). The poem opens with two if/then statements, which sets up quite a logical tone. In the first line of her poem she states, If ever two were one, then surely we (1). This line entertains the belief that she and her husband are one entity; what happens to one, will happen to the other. Also, the speaker says that if two people were ever one person, then she and her husband surely are. In the second, she says that if ever any man has been loved by his wife, her husband has been. • 24. Deaf Culture And Bilingual Signs I have a friend by the name of Karen that while living in the United States lives in a completely different culture than us. Karen is deaf. When we first met we mainly communicated by text or the online community that brought us together. While I knew a little sign language it was not enough to keep a steady conversation. Karen helped me learn some signs, I took classes to teach me more about deaf cultureand conversational signs. I went from being able to carry on a conversation with my voice and ears to having to learn to watch someone s hands and be behind in translating in my head what they were trying to say. At first I thought that this would be my greatest challenge in learningto communicate well with deaf people, but then I found out that they also use a lot of facial expressions, different sentence structure, and even almost set up a scene when telling a story with the location of their hands and only really tell you who they are speaking about once before placing them in the scene. ... This means that unlike other methods of damping, such as constrained layer damping, the dynamic response and material properties are unaffected by its addition into the system. Furthermore, many applications require a damping system that will not degrade in performance over time. This is not the case for other viscous dampers; for instance, many dampers require a viscous liquid which may leak over time. These two points are just a few of the many advantages offered by eddy current damping systems. The most widely researched and well developed area of eddy current damping systems falls in the category of magnetic braking. While the research in this area will be thoroughly discussed, the literature is very dense and every paper cannot be reviewed. The work in magnetic braking will be presented first, followed by studies into eddy current damping of rotating machinery, and finally a wide range of research using eddy currents for dynamic systems will be presented. The concept of using eddy currents for damping purposes has been known for a considerable time, with manuscripts dating to the late 1800s. Administrative law, an area of law that gained early sophistication in France, was until well into this century largely unrecognized in the United Kingdom as well as the United States. To the early English writers on administrative law, there was virtually no difference between administrative law and constitutional law. This is evident from the words of Keith: It is logically impossible to distinguish administrative from constitutional law and all attempts to do so are artificial. Some jurists like Felix Frankfurter even went as far as to call it illegitimate and exotic . Due to this lack of clarity, it will be vital to observe the views of jurists and scholars on the difference between administrative law and constitutional law. According to Holland, constitutional law describes the various organs of the government at rest, while administrative law describes them in motion. Holland contends that the structure of the executive and the legislature comes within the purview of constitutional law whereas their functioning is governed by administrative law. Jennings puts forward another view, which says that administrative law deals with the organization, functions, powers and duties of administrative authorities while constitutional law deals with the general principles relating to the organization and powers of the various organs of the State and their mutual relationships and relationship of these ... He is the current president of The Master s College and Seminary. He also has a national syndicated radio program Grace to You. I believe the author s intention was to debunk the myth of evolution. John MacArthur addresses creation from a Biblical standpoint. The book targets a primarily a Christian audience and makes a strong case for a literal six day creation. This is not a book that fundamentally concentrates on persuading unbelieving evolutionists of creationism, yet rather it focuses on convincing Christians who trust that in some type of advancement, (for example, old earth creationism or the Gap Theory) that the primary perusing of Genesis one and two is a strict perusing. MacArthur constructs a significant part of the book with respect to the view that Evolution is itself a religion that is entirely contradicted to Christianity. Creationism and Evolution, along these lines, can never be blended. We should have faith in it is possible that either. Subsequent to giving numerous reasons why Evolutionism is contradictory to God and His outline, the book spends a section on each of the days of creation. Books such as The Lorax, The Foot book and The Butter Battle Book are perfect examples of that. Seuss, a man known for his creative vision and use of words, made these books a satire gold mine! We already know about his rhymes but Seuss was also extremely good at using exaggeration. Don t forget his amazing use of onomatopoeias or his profound use of repetition. I could go on forever but the fact is Dr Seuss and his creative mind has an amazing talent for using satire to make his books come to life. To make his books stick around for so long and to open the minds of his reader to the world of satire and the amazing world of literature. This creative talent is most clearly shown by the uses of exaggeration all throughout the book The Butter Battle. Whether it s the fact that these two races are fighting over what side they butter their bread. Or the fact that each side believes one is worse because of that fact. No matter where you look in this book, there will always be a use of exaggeration! One being, So you cant trust a Zook who spreads his bread underneath! Every Zook must be watched! He has kinks in his soul! (Seuss). This quote is a perfect example of exaggeration, it s very obvious that no one would have kinks in their soul because of how they butter their bread. Or that every Zook has to be watched! Another great example would be the line, I ll blow you up he yelled, into pork and wee beans (Seuss). Now we all know that you cant blow someone up into pork and wee beans! It s just physically impossible but that doesn t stop Dr. Seuss from using it and using it effectively. To sum this all up, it s very easy to see that exaggeration is just one of the few pieces of satire Dr. Seuss uses. But it is used extremely effective and makes the reader more interested and gives them a few laughs in the process! So does that mean that a lower class family doesn t have the money to do such recreational activity? And that we are slobs because we like to view nature in its own environment? The Individual in Judaism and Hinduism Through the Bhagavad Gita and the Book of Job we see the similar ways that different religions affirm that the individual can t have the same level of knowledge as the divine. We also, however, see that while Hinduism offers an explanation for this knowledge disparity, and offers a path of empowerment that allows the individual to strive for the knowledge level of the divine, Judaism simply deems that we are insignificant beings when compared to God, and that we can t ever achieve nearly the same amount of knowledge as God. The Book of Job tells those who consider the bible to be a holy text, namely Jewish and Christian people, the story of Job. His story tells us that we, as individual human beings, are lesser beings than God and can t know as much as God. At the end of the story, after hearing God mention the greatness of his creations, Job finally breaks and admits that he was wrong to question God, as Job, an individual human being, has a limited amount of knowledge compared to God. While God is pleased with this response from the previously dubious Job, he is not happy with Zophar, Eliphaz, and Bildad for claiming to know why God acted in the manner in which he did while they were consoling Job.
