A small country such as North Vietnam was able to win a war against a superpower like the United
States of America, through, namely, tactics – such as Guerrilla Warfare –, the ignorance of their
enemy, the attitude of the South Vietnamese, as well as a strong leader such as Ho Chi Minh. The
Vietnam War was a major conflict (of the Cold War) which lasted from 1959 to 1975 , with US

Vietnam fight against North Vietnam and its allies. It was the longest war in American history, over

At first, Dara heavily relied on Jantu's "magic" clay marble, needing its magic, its luck, and a lot
more values that are not muscles. Back then, it was reasonable Dara didn't make anything back then,
because back then, Dara only had remnants of confidence in herself. As the novel goes on, Dara
learns to become more and more confident within herself.
The Clay Marble, although short and sweet, introduced me to Asian life in Cambodia during its civil
war. In chapter seven of the book, I could make a connection between the Cherokee's Trail of Tears
and the long grueling walk the many refugee families had to take to reach safety. The Cherokees
were walking away from the harsh greedy whites, while the refugees were walking away from the
nearing fighting of the civil war.
I really appreciate Dara and Jantu's view on life. In the novel, when Dara was persuading Sarun to
quit being a soldier at the end, she made wonderful arguments. The most memorable argument was
when Dara said that it took more courage to stay peaceful in their own village, rather than to fight in
war, which was nothing else than a game of destroying and breaking. I never thought of bravery that
kind of way, and I am glad Minfong Ho introduced me to this new concept through her

Castaway Analysis
In the movie Castaway, Chuck Noland is marooned on a deserted island by himself. He lost
everyone he ever knew and because of that he started to go insane. To cope with this, he created a
friend for himself, helping him keep his sanity and to be less lonely. At times, he lost motivation,
and he almost gave up. Noland learned how to get food, clean water, and make a shelter in the four
years he was on the island, fulfilling his basic needs . Ultimately, the main reason he almost died
multiple times while marooned was because he was alone. Love and belongingness needs are one of
the most important needs for human survival because without human interaction, one could lose
their sanity, motivation, and can become lonely. Some people who follow Maslow's Hierarchy of
Needs believe that the basic needs are the most important needs. Seeing as how the basic needs
include food, water, and rest, this makes sense. Without those essentials, one will die. In the book
The Clay Marble by Minfong Ho, in chapter nine, a young refugee named Dara is walking back to
her campsite after being separated from her family. "I noticed an old man looking at me curiously.
He was sitting with his own family, holding a plate of cold rice. I looked at it hungrily, but could not
bring myself to ask for any food." Dara is rejecting asking for food, and yet the only reason she is
there in the first place is to find her family. Dara cannot bear to lose them, and would rather go
hungry looking for them than be fully nourished without them. This shows how much risk people
will go through for the ones they love. Dara wandered back to her campsite, right after it had been
bombed, to try and find the people she loved. Eating, drinking, and sleeping are key human

This caused the initial French colony of Indochina being declared in 1887. Until world war two and
in the 1940's, Vietnam had stayed part of the French Empire, until the invasion of Japanese soldiers.
Vietnam took the opportunity to develop its own form of government, led by Ho Chi Mihn, until
after the war where the allies had divided Vietnam giving South Vietnam back to the French and
north Vietnam to the non–communist Chinese. However due to the poorly treated state North

One evening in late fall a young innocent girl named Mary was walking along the road when she
saw a poor defenseless lamb. She started to approach the lamb, and as she got closer... and closer...

have a name tag on it. She decided to take it home and put signs up for a missing lamb. When they
got back to Mary's house the lamb noticed that the house was kind of mysterious looking, two
gargoyles were placed at each side of the porch along with a statue of a weeping angel. Mary was
trying to figure out what the lambs name was so she just made one up. She called it Myers. In the
late afternoon Mary and Myers were deeply staring at the wall in their mansion watching spiders
move vigorously up the wall. Suddenly, it began to storm very intensely, but Mary wanted to show
Myers her special place. Mary had always gone to the abandoned windmill just to think. When they
arrived Mary saw something in the distance, so she decided that they should leave. On their way out
Myers got his leg caught in the train tracks. Mary tried to free his leg, but his hoof was not budging.
After a few minutes, a train began to appear in the distance, racing in the direction of Myers. Mary
ran away in fear of the train hitting Myers, not knowing that it would only be worse if she did not

The first book I read was Bouncing Back. It was a collection of the
experiences of a group of Air Force pilots who were gunned down and taken
as prisoners of war. The post–POW lives of the Air Force pilots I read
about contrasted greatly with those of the Marines I read about in The War In I

The Marines lived dirty lived in the Jungles of Vietnam. One of the
best things about The War In I Corps was its great descriptions of the
things the Marines had to go through. As Richard A. Guidry put it : "In a driving
rain, laden with heavy packs, our platoon lumbered toward its place in the long
line of men sprawled in the thick sticky mud.... The rain added a slimy quality
to the crust of dirt and fungus that encased my body. Running my fingers
across my arm was like following the tracks of a snail."3 It really gave me
a feel for what they were going through. It made me wonder how they didn't
just not fight. The war wasn't theirs, but due to bad luck they were stuck
in this horrible jungle forced to fight an enemy they had no reason to hate.

These movements were not able to adapt or change its methods to cater to the needs of the locals
and causing their support to decrease in the long–run. This shows that there was limited growth of
nationalism in the movements based on religion and culture. For instance, SI was led by two
factions, one by Agus Salim and the other by the radical political party led by the ISDV. In 1918,
when the Dutch sensed the radicalization in the SI, many supporters withdrew their support from the
party. This caused the SI to ban joined membership in SI and other communist organisations which
was based on ideology. This shows that movements that are based on religion did not grow and

where colonial rule was suppressive. Thus, from here it shows that religion does not play a

'Archetype InThe LambBy William Blake'
Blakes Archetypes William Blake is one of the most famous poets in the Romantics period. A
unique thing about Blake is his ability to not only write poems but to be able to combine that with
his artistic ability. Every poem that Blake writes is not printed, but is handwritten with a piece of his
artwork. Blake is also very well known for his two opposite Archetypes. An Archetype is when
something symbolizes something else. In addition to the symbols an archetype can also have
background or a story behind it. William Blake wrote four poems, The Lamb, The Chimney
Sweeper, The Tyger, and Infant Sorrow where in each of these we can infer that about the two
archetypes, songs of innocence and songs of experience. The Lamb by William Blake belongs in the
song innocence category. When a person thinks of a lamb they think of a sweet animal who could do
no harm, and this is exactly what songs of innocence means. In some ways the lamb is pure and
childish. Lambs do not have anger and do not really care how things workout. In the poem, The
Lamb by William Blake he explains, "Gave thee clothing of delight, Softest clothing wooly delight
(lines 5–6)." Blake recognizes all the good qualities that lamb's posses and is very positive about the
lamb although it may not be the smartest animal. In God's eye his son is lamb. To continue with the
Archetype of innocence, The Chimney Sweeper is another example of a symbol. Innocence means
not having experience, helplessness, and without evil. In the poem, The Chimney Sweeper Blake
shows this character trait. Throughout this poem Blake tells the story of a young orphan boy whose
mother died when he was very small and his father sold him to an orphanage. These events led to a
very dangerous and traumatizing childhood. When a child lives in an orphanage they are used a
laborer. A chimney sweeper would climb up into wealthier people's chimneys and clean them. In the
story, The Chimney Sweeper, William Blake explains, "Could scarcely cry weep weep weep weep.
So your chimneys I sweep & in soot I sleep (lines 3–4)." This is a very powerful line in how the

Theme Of An Outsider
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton and The Clay Marble by Minfong Ho both center around the motif of
being an outsider. The theme of both books is that you are never an outsider when you have friends
and family. This is shown through the two main characters, Dara and Ponyboy. While they share
similarities, the two are also vastly different. Dara starts her story as a very innocent and hopeful
girl. When she arrives at the refugee camp, she says "I had the strange feeling that somehow I had
finally come back home" on page 22. This is showing how even after she lost her home, she still had

theme of The Outsiders. Even though he's a greaser and on the bad side of society's view, Ponyboy
is really only an outsider when he is without his family and gang. Following Dara, after Johnny's
death, Ponyboy becomes The Hero. On page 145 the text states " 'Yessir,' I said, 'I'll try. What's the
theme supposed to be on?' 'Anything you think is important enough to write about. And it isn't a
reference theme; I want your own ideas and your own experiences'." Ponyboy then writes a theme
paper based on Johnny's life, letting everyone know what they've gone through. He has an honorable
purpose, allowing him to be The Hero. Ponyboy also faces a great deal of problems, although his are
not the same as Dara's. Like her, he is also driven from his home and placed in an intense war.

It is amazing what you can do as a team when you all have a shared goal in mind. The owner set the
goals for us to go by, but was always willing to listen to ideas from his employees. This allowed
everyone to feel as if they were having a hand in making the Grille a better place. The spirit of the
squirrel reminds me of the people I worked with and how they all pulled together to help. As Andy
Longclaw said in the book, "worthwhile doesn't mean more than important, it just covers more
territory than important". All of the Grille workers knew the work they did was important, and that
led to a common goal between all of us. We used values to guide all of our work and didn't take
shortcuts because we had values. We knew that every little thing was worthwhile and part of a larger

Indochina in 1887 but gained their independence after World War II. France continued to rule it until
1954 when it was defeated by communist forces under Ho Chi MINH. From that point forward
under the Geneva Accords, they were divided into the communist north, and the anti–communist
south. US aid grew in the south in the 1960's to try and boost the government, but they were pulled
out following a cease–fire agreement in 1973. Two years later the North Vietnamese forces took
over, reuniting the country under communist rule (CIA, 2014).
Despite the return of peace, for over a decade the country experienced economic growth. "Since the
Vietnam enactment "doi moi" policy in 1986, the Vietnamese authorities had committed to increased
economic liberalization and enacted structural reforms needed to modernize the economy"–which
was a way to help produce more competitive and export driven industries. Communist leaders had
maintained control on political expression and resisted outside calls so they could improve on
human rights. Vietnam still continues to experience small–scale protests and so have many other
ethnic minorities (CIA, 2014).

How did the attacking forces move their units across the line of departure?
The attacking forces, 2nd Battalion Raiders, moved their forces through the line of departure via
submarine and rubber boat. The USS Argonaut (SM–1)(EX–V4) and USS Nautilus (SS–168)(EX–
V6) transported rubber inflatable motor boats to the Makin Atoll (Carlson's Marine Raiders: Makin
Island 1942, Gordon L. Rottman 24–25). The transit of the troops took around 9 days from Pearl
Harbor due to its winding path to avoid obvious detection. Submarines held position within 500 yds
of the reef line to deploy troops and rubber boats. The rubber boats were held within the external
torpedo–storage of the submarines along with weapons and supplies for the mission (Rottman 43).
The twelve rubber boats from the Argonaut traveled towards the Nautilus, with it's eight boats
joining them, and continued towards the island. Company A (Carlson's Group) had landed on Beach
"Z" (actual) instead of Beach "Y" (planned) which was an improvement since they're closer to the
target. The Raiders made it to land but some boats got capsized causing the spread of weapons and
supplies along the beach, or separated from the group. Peatross' group that was separated from the
main body had advanced towards objective despite lack of numbers.
How did the defending forces react to the attack?
The natives of the land, that were supposedly working for the Japanese, had welcomed and
hospitalized the Raiders. False information had been given to them, though, when Raiders inquired
of Japanese personnel (Rottman 46–47). The Japanese soldiers had seemingly anticipated the attack
or had been aware of it with no reports of the natives. Japanese soldiers had been deployed close to
where the path and position of the target of the Raiders (Rottman 47). This was most likely due to
the panic friendly fire shots by Raiders which had occurred frequently throughout the Raider's
presence. The Japanese had automobiles and special weaponry, such as flamethrowers, machine
guns, etc. to use on the island against the Raiders as well. The Japanese had also placed
camouflaged snipers amongst the palms in advance to pick off any hiding or unprepared Raider

was established. The vichy French government signed a peace treaty with the Japanese later that

under communist rule. The South was against communism, making tensions grow until eventually, a
war broke out on November 1, 1955. Five years later in the 1960s, the war was escalated with the
involvement of foreign countries. While the North was supported by its communist allies such as
China and the Soviet Union. The South was supported by the United States of America. The
Americans wanted to halt or prolong the spread of communism. The "domino theory" compelled the
U.S. to get involved as soon as possible because if not, the rest of Asia would fall to communism
like "dominoes". The U.S. involvement only started with Eisenhower administration when Vietnam
split in half. This action of the United States was only for their own well being and their main goal
was not for the good of Vietnam. During this time period the Vietnamese had just united and
established the state of Vietnam. The war ended up lasting 9 years with long periods of bitter
guerrilla warfare in the rugged jungles of Vietnam which would eventually result in the victory of
the North and longed unification of Vietnam

themselves." (Section 13, 25). In this passage, Nietzsche details the complex relationship between
the birds of prey and the lambs. Firstly, I argue that the birds of prey represent the noble class, and

I will show this by doing a close reading of section 13 and detailing the claims made by Nietzsche
throughout book 1.
In section 13, Nietzsche begins by saying, "But let us come back: the problem of the other origin of
"good," of the good one was conceived by the man of ressentiment, demands its conclusion."
(Section 13, 25). Here Nietzsche is setting up who the lambs represent in his moral theory. He is
arguing that whomever falls under the category of "the man of ressentiment" is also the group who
originated their own definition of good. This group of people would be the slaves or "the lambs."
When Nietzsche says, "the man of ressentiment" he is talking about a very specific emotion that

Was the War in Vietnam Justified?
Was the war in Vietnam justified? The Vietnam War was the longest war in the history of the United
States it lasted from 1959–1975. Billions of dollars was spent trying to win and unwinnable war.
Countless of lives were lost and America failed to achieve its objective. The origins of the war stem
from the Indochina wars that occurred in the late 40s and early 50s. After many years of colonial
war, the Viet Minh a communist group led by Ho Chi Minh sought independence for Vietnam. The
French were not reluctant to let go of their crowning jewel without a fight. The French were aided
militarily by the Unites States who sought the membership of France to the NATO and were
willingly to provide as much aid to ensure that they won the war and Vietnam did not fall to
communism. This led to an eight year war which culminated with the defeat of the French at the
Battle of Dien Bien Phu. A cease fire was issued and peace agreements known as the Geneva
Accords where drawn during the 1954 Geneva Conference. The agreement issued a temporary
division of Vietnam along the 17th parallel which created a Communist North Vietnam led by Ho
Chi Minh and a democratic South Vietnam led by prime minister Ngo Dinh Diem. Vietnam was
supposed to unify after the nationwide election of 1956 which Diem refuse to acknowledge.
The United States began to support South Vietnam, but Diem proved to be a horrible leader and in
1963 was killed during a coup issued by John F. Kennedy. The National Liberation

Firstly, the invasion of the Vietnam War cannot be justified when the US 's ally in the war is a
corrupt democracy. When the Vietnam War began the United States' puppet state was Ngo Dinh
Diem's South Vietnam. Diem was a dictator or the President supposedly of South Vietnam that took
power for himself there, and threw all of his civil and political opponents into violent concentration
camps. The South Vietnamese President had also oppressed those of different religions specifically
Buddhism ("NGO DINH DIEM, FIRST PRESIDENT OF SOUTH VIETNAM."). Eventually, the
Viet Cong who would rather support a communist regime formed due to the oppressive nature of
Diem's ruthless democracy. By the time North Vietnam sought to unify the country Diem had
opposition from all perspectives, including his most trusted peers. Even with his mockery of a
democracy, the United States believed it had to support his efforts in the defense of democracy in
South Vietnam. The United States did want a change of power, but were willing to continue with
Diem if deemed necessary to win. Benjamin Frankel states this by stating "advised the State
Department that the United States should begin to search for an alternative to Diem. On 1 November
1963 South Vietnamese military officers overthrew Diem, and he and his brother were shot to death"

everyone having fair trials, civil liberties, and the right to free speech.

Rudyard Kipling was a very well known British writer. Born on December 30th, 1865 in Bombay,
India and died on January 18th, 1936 in London, England. He wrote short stories, novels, and poems
throughout his lifetime, some famous and some not. He won Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. The
short story, The Mark of the Beast, written by Rudyard Kipling uses conflict through the characters
to prove all choices have consequences.
Kipling's parents were John and Alice Kipling. Mr. Kipling was an artist as well as a teacher of
architectural sculpting. At age five, "... his parents sent him and his sister [Trix] to England, partly to

He has lost his speech and began howling, "We could hear him moving about in his own room, but
there was no light there. Presently from this room came the long – howl of a wolf" (Kipling 5).
When he started howling Strickland's thoughts became a reality, so and the narrator came up with a

Mary was stunned by this. She was so overturned with all emotions she had no idea what to do.
Little did he know she was about to unleash everything upon him. As she went to the freezer and
grabbed a lamb leg and said "This will do." She walked out of the freezer and struck him on the
head
with the lamb leg and killed him. This was the ultimate betrayal. It was betrayal that he was leaving
but it
was more so that she killed him.

showmanship is about to begin, everyone please round up your animal and come to the ring." My
nerves instantly hit me, my hands instantly became frigid, unwilling to move even one centimeter.
Everywhere around there was nothing but faded denim jeans, cowboy boots, old t–shirts, plaid
shirts, and the occasional stetson. The screeching and bleating of surrounding animals bounced
around in my head, making it more difficult to concentrate. The smell of manure and farm animal
burned my nostrils as I shook my head to clear my thoughts. All around me people quickly rushed to
their animals to do one last check over, pluck away the straw, fluff the wool, clear the crust, and
check the hooves, all while freshening up themselves. Meanwhile I carefully took my market lamb
