Globalization in the Music industry
Globalization in the Music Industry
Jonathan Ben Ami
ACOM 388
The music industry has been around for over two centuries (PBS). Its volatility can be measured by its
ability to shift and change according to its time period, the technologies that arise through the ages and
the public s shift in musical taste. The music industry is comprised of many different components,
organizations and individuals that operate within it. Some of these components include the artists who
compose the music themselves, the producers that engineer the sounds created by the artists, the
companies that handle distribution and promotion of the recorded music, the broadcasters of the music
such as radio ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over the past decade, the use of CDs has been replaced with online streaming and retailing. This has
eliminated much of the record companies revenues as they were used to making most of their profit
off of distribution and promotion of physical copies of artists albums (Niemen). This has caused for a
major shift and remodeling of major players in the music industries business models. Companies such
Sony, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group have started to completely rethink the way
they conduct business (Forbes). In the past record labels were not only responsible for production,
distribution and promotion of an artist and his/her music, but they also acted as a bank (Forbes),
funding the artists tours and recording sessions. Recently, these music giants have been moving
towards becoming more of a modular network organization. What this means is that they are less
occupied with the nitty gritty, and more focused on what they do best which is distribution and
promotion. This also allows for more freedom of creativity for the artist as well as fairer split of
profits (Forbes). This adaption of new business models clearly shows the versatility of the music
industry in adapting to new times and technologies.
One can only speculate the future of the music industry. As aforementioned, the music industry is in
constant flux, changing shape and adapting to new

War Is Kind Irony
Comparative Essay on Stephen Crane s Use of Irony in War is Kind and A Mystery of Heroism
If you ask a group of people how they feel about war, you re likely to get quite a few different
responses. While some think war is the only way to settle our issues, others believe it is just another
way to start them. People go into wars looking for change but the change they get isn t always the
change they were searching for. Stephen Crane uses irony in War is Kind and A Mystery of Heroism
to prove he is opposed to war by sarcastically pointing out the negative aspects of it and the feelings
that surround them. In the poem War is Kind the author uses sarcasm and irony to point out the
negative aspects of war while still reaching out to the people that support it. He points out how people
are all supposed to think of death in the war as a normality by saying Make plain to them the
excellence of killing, and a field where a thousand corpses lie . He describes the violence and death of
the war while always resorting back to calling it kind, because that s what everyone perceives it as.
The author makes it seem as though right when men are born they are immediately brought up to fight
for our country by saying, Little souls who thirst for fight, These men were born to drill ... Show more

In War is Kind, he talks about the feelings of the people at home while in A Mystery of Heroism he
talks about the feelings of the people experiencing war first hand, the soldiers. In War is Kind he

while in A Mystery of Heroism he reaches out to the people who are actually serving. The feelings in
War is Kind make readers think of the sadness and saudade of the families, while the feelings
surrounding A Mystery of Heroism make you think of the fear and anticipation that the soldiers felt on

Cain And Abel Research Paper
Abel was killed by his older brother Cain. Genesis 4 shares the adult lives of brothers, Cain and Abel.
Cain and Abel were sons of Adam and Eve; however, Cain became very jealous and envious of his
younger brother, Abel. The motive of Cain s jealousy towards his brother, Abel, derived from Abel s
worship offering being accepted by God, their Creator. Abel s offering to God was from the yield of
the first fruit of his flock. Cain also provided a worship offering to God. Nonetheless, Cain s presented
offering wasn t acceptable. Hence, an envious spirit became birthed within Cain, and Cain murdered
his brother, Abel, because God accepted Abel s worship offering but didn t accept Cain s offering. God
became displeased with Cain and vowed that the ground would no longer yield its fruit towards Cain.
In other words, God is not honored with murder. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moses died at an old age of 120 years old. When Moses died, he was still quite strong in his strength
and vision. Moses posture was likely still very erect. Indeed his mind was still strong, and God
allowed Moses to see all the land that He would give to the descendants of Abraham. Moses eyesight
was so strong at 120 years old that he could clearly see far into the western sea and as far as Zoar. God
loved Moses so much that He wanted Moses to at least see the Promised Land even though Moses
would not get an opportunity to enter into it. God buried Moses Himself when he died, but He wouldn
t allow anyone to know where Moses burial was located. After Moses death, the Israelites grieved,

Changing Relationship In Suzy And Leah By Jane Yolen
Suzy and Leah by Jane Yolen is a story two girls changing relationship. In the beginning of the story,
Suzy and Leah hated each other, because they didn t understand each other s past experience, but in
the story, they get to know each other by exchanging diaries. The reason their relationship changed so
much was because they began to understand each other. The main lesson of the story is to not judge a
book by its cover like Suzy and Leah did in the beginning of the story. The reason Suzy and Leah s
feelings change in the story is because they read each other s diaries. Suzy read Leah s diary because
she was curious about her and didn t understand her emotions and why she acted the way she did.
Suzy had many questions about Leah, Who

Federal Law And Government Policy
Law and government policy is instilled in order to maintain the rights of employers as well as, their
employees. There are three sections in legal framework that makes up a properly structured
organization; first, there is Home Depot, which has the right to modify employee work terms for
legitimate business reasons. Second, there is the employee, who has the right of protection from
harmful business practices, and lastly, there is the government of Canada, which balances both
employee and Home Depot relations. (Dessler, Chhinzer Cole, 2013, 27). Provincial and federal
statutes impacts Home Depot in managing employment relationships because it is HR s responsibility
to ensure that organization policies align with all legislations. If ... Show more content on

If there are no provincial counterparts to federal statutes than those federal statutes are also in effect
provincially. The following federal statutes apply to both federal and provincial organizations; The
Canadian Pension Plan, which provides qualifying employees with pensions on retirement and
permanent disability, applies to Home Depot. Moreover, Employment Insurance Act provides
qualifying employees with income replacement during periods of temporary unemployment. (E Laws,
2014) Because CPP and EI are both federally and provincially regulated, Home Depot must abide by
these legislations.
The Constitutional Law
For Home Depot this includes abiding by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Charter protects
the following rights of every Canadian, Freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of thought,
belief, opinion, and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication,
freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of association. (Dessler et al., 2013, 29). Even though, the
regulations in the Charter are not employment specific, Home Depot must accept the laws set forth
because the laws protect rights to all Canadian citizens. In addition, this constitutional law takes
precedence over all other laws. Thus, Home Depot must conduct their business in total compliance
with the laws of the Charter. (Dessler et al., 2013, 29) This means the Charter impacts Home Depot s
code of ethics, policy, and employment contract because

Big Data Is Not A New Technology
Evaluation
Big data is not a new technology, however applied to the rapidly growing and changing field of cyber
security, big data companies are finding new and emerging ways to use big data analytics to gain a
competitive edge (Emerging Trends in Big Data Analytsis for 2015, 2015). Big data analysis looks for
and utilizes the patterns extracted from large volumes of data. (Kantarcioglu, 2015). One of the
important uses of big data analytics is in the detection, discovery, and prevention of cyber security
threats. Big data analysis is also instrumental in the collection and analysis of the large volumes of
data collected from sensors embedded within smart grids (Bharathi, 2015). Many companies and
organizations in sectors such as electric ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This information can then be used by potential employers in hiring decisions, or even by potential
romantic interests (Mansour, 2016).
How Big Data Analytics Can Be Used to Improve or Support Cyber Security Big data analytics shows
a number of promising applications to improve and support cybersecurity. No longer can companies
and organizations rely on traditional cyber security measures such as firewalls, encryption, and anti
virus software. One of the most obvious of these is in the early detection and prevention of cyber
threats. Using a visual analytic system, IT professionals can use software that will analyze large scale
high dimensional cyber security datasets containing logs of a million computers (Chen, 2015). This
analysis will help detect unexpected changes taking places in all areas of the data and identify
potential anomalies, and help protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the data. Big data
analytics can not only help detect potential future cyber attacks, it can be used to help detect a breach
that is in progress (Kern, 2015). By applying machine learning techniques, new security events can be
identified based on historical patterns (Enhancing Cybersecurity with Big Data: Challenges
Opportunities, 2014). Documentation and prevention of cybersecurity attacks is another key

The True Meaning Of Being Happy
What is happiness? What does it mean to be happy? Is happiness real? These questions are the most
frequently asked questions that most people ask themselves. By definition, being happy is when
something is feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. But, what is the true meaning of being
happy? Many people view happiness in many different aspects. Pharrell Williams s song Happy did
just that. It tells people that they don t have to seek hard to be happy. It is within one s self. Unlike
most songs, there is no hidden message. The message is very clear. It is about maintaining a positive
state of mind despite how bad and sometimes heartbreaking events in life can be. When you think
about the great times in life, everything seems to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

a pure, natural, and limitless state. Now, let s take a deeper look into his lyrics. The song s first lyrics

here, you can take away. I m a hot air balloon, I could go to space. With the air, like I don t care baby
by the way. Pharrell wants the listener to know how he might be crazy but he doesn t care what you
think about him. He s just going to be weird when it comes to telling you how he feels. Next, the
chorus begins with the lines Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof, Clap along if you feel
like happiness is the truth. Clap along if you know what happiness is to you, Clap along if you feel
like that s what you wanna do. Here, Pharrell s narrator is to remind the listener to continue to be
happy no matter what. Also, you have no limits so live it up. What s happiness if you re going to
experience it with limitations? Now, we ve reached the second verse. Pharrell continues to give us
more tips on staying happy. Here come bad news talking this and that, yeah. Well, give me all you got,
and don t hold back, yeah. Well, I should probably warn you I ll be just fine, yeah. No offense to you,
don t waste your time. Here s why. In these particular lyrics, he wants us to know that he is happy and

Chinese Food In Jade Snow Wong s Fifth Chinese Daughter
Looking at food as multidimensional, as something that shapes us, our identities, our cultures ( Stajcic,
8), Jade Snow Wong strongly believes that Chinese food is a marker of the Chinese identity. As a non
verbal form of communication, food is notably at the center of every important event in our lives, such
as birthdays, weddings, holidays and funerals. Within ritual contexts, food often stands in for
expressions of life, love, happiness or grief (Stajcic,13). Therefore, she devotes a lot of space in Fifth
Chinese Daughter to descriptions of Chinese food habits, customs of weddings and funerals,
Chinatown daily life, as well as business dealing intending to reveal the mystery of the Chinese
community (Bardhan, 186). She takes the white reader on a gastronomic tour , and she describes
Chinese meals, takes pain to explain the ritualistic significance of certain meals and folks beliefs about
the medicinal properties of certain ingredients (Stefanovici,216). Jade Snow s undoubted connection
to the Chinese heritage is manifested in her endless employment of Chinese food cooking and recipes,
and in her descriptions of festivals and family rituals. Her self discovery voyage is reflected in her
journey through the various assortments of tastes of different Chinese dishes. From the very beginning
of the novel, she proclaims that she is very lucky to be born [as] a Chinese daughter (43). She states
that her Chinese background was [her] point of distinction (Wong, No

Different Phases Of Solar And Magnetic Activity Cycles
CHAPTER 2 Cosmic Ray Modulation during Different Phases of Solar and Magnetic Activity Cycles
INTRODUCTION Cosmic rays are modulated as they traverse into the heliosphere. Measurements
have shown that cosmic ray intensity varies on different time scales. On a longer time scale, the
cosmic ray intensity variations in anti phase with solar activity having ≈ 11 year cyclicity is well
known and studied extensively (e.g., see Venkatesan and Badruddin, 1990; Storini et al., 1995;
Usoskin et al., 1998; Mavromichalaki et al., 1998; Kane, 2003; Sabbah and Rybansky, 2006; Ma et al.,
2009; Chaudhary et al., 2011; Kudela, 2012). In addition, the ≈ 22 year modulation cycle in cosmic
ray flux due to solar magnetic field polarity reversals is observed and modeled (e.g., Jokipii and
Thomas, 1981; Potgieter and Moraal, 1985; Webber and Lockwood, 1988; Potgieter, 1995; Cliver and
Ling, 2001; Laurenza et al., 2012). However, in order to understand these phenomena, it is important
to understand how cosmic ray transport and propagation vary with the solar activity and solar
magnetic polarity (Heber, 2013). Although sunspots have been used as a convenient index of solar
activity, anti correlated with cosmic ray intensity, it has been recognized that they are not intrinsically
related to the problem of solar modulation of cosmic rays. However, the diffusion coefficient changes
during ≈ 11 year sunspot cycle, being smaller during periods of high solar activity than

I work at a liquor store called State Line Liquors in Elkton. I pack up customers liquor and then take it
out to their car. I carefully carry their stuff out only for them to look at the ground mutter thank you
and retreat to their cars. It can get really frustrating when this happens because people always seem to
expect us to do it. They do not understand what a service is. People always say that waiters and
waitresses have it rough because most of their wages come from tips, but Americans have ingrained
into their mind that the waiter must always be tipped. This is only one of the many jobs inside of the
service industry. I believe in always tipping the service guy. The service workforce really do have the

How Does Sam Mendes Use Camera Angles In American Beauty
American Beauty
Respond critically to significant aspects of visual and/or text(s) through close reading, supported by
evidence.
Sam Mendes is an intelligent and sophisticated director who has created many award winning films
during his career. Some characteristics of his directorial style are; camera work with the specific use of
close up s and the zooming effect, lighting/colour to symbolise characters/items and use sound to
create tension and anticipation in the audience. I have chosen Mendes s 1999 masterpiece American
Beauty to study and analyse. This film has scenes that incorporate all of Mendes s described
characteristics and that help to give me a clear understanding of Mendes s directional style.
Mendes uses the same camera work in both of the dining room scenes in American Beauty to create
tension with the audience and to emphasise characters expressions and emotions to the viewers,
leaving us in no doubt what each character is feeling. This allows the audience to understand each
character more effectively and as a result, it challenges us to think about how we might feel in the
same situation. A scene, in American Beauty, that Mendes uses effective camera work to enhance the
audiences view of the characters is the dining room scene that features Lester, his wife Caroline and
his daughter Jane. When the scene starts, Mendes uses a background music that sounds just like
elevator music; Beli high: musical Pacific, with close up shots of pictures when Jane was younger and
a vase full of red roses. However, as the scene continues Mendes uses a wide shot to show the entire
dining room, this frame was then gradual zooming in up until the frame stopped in a position where
you could see a mid shot of each character sitting at the table. When the conversation had started from
Lester the audience could see how disengaged his wife and daughter were. They weren t interested in
how his day went, they only cared about themselves. When the close ups are on Lester, the audience
gets a vivid picture of a man who has lost his true self and who is already dead inside . Whereas when
the close ups are on Jane or Caroline, you see someone who is pained from the discomfort of certain
people around them Jane or

The Physics Of Our Science Classes
In the 21st, in our science classes, we are taught to believe that our world is actually made up of
particles as the smallest constituents of matter. We are told that particles behave like waves because it
makes no sense to teach that a particle moves faster than the speed of light, that particles can cause
interference with one another, among other ridiculous things that we just never imagine a particle to
do. What we are not told is that we never had to think about the smallest elements of matter, also
known as, quanta, as particles. Instead, we can describe quanta as being excitations of fields, i.e.,
waves. There is no supporting evidence that a wave can behave like a particle, the evidence only
points to experiments evaluating the data using wrong techniques, and assuming that a particle was in
the place of a wave. I. Introduction Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The
important thing is not to stop questioning. Einstein Every day, thousands of people go to class and
learn. If you visited a class taught before Albert Einstein s Theory of Special Relativity was popular,
your professor might have taught you that there was some magical ether that explained away Newton
s classical equations of motion. But as years went on, Einstein s idea caught on and now we are taught
that there is no ether we proved it through thorough experiments. Unfortunately for those who don t
want to give up the current equivalent of a magical ether, wave/particle

diseases (Leukaemia and blood cancer New Zealand, 2015).Leukaemia is believed to be ten times
more common in adults and double as common in males (McKenna, 2000). Blood cancers are the fifth
most common cancer in New Zealand. Furthermore, leukaemia is most common among children in
New Zealand (Leukaemia and blood cancer New Zealand, 2015). This assignment will describe the
pathophysiological condition, symptom, current best practice and treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukaemia (ALL).
Four types of leukaemia
Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) With this type of leukaemia, a patient s myeloid cells get affected
and develop rapidly. Leukemic blast cells develop in the bone marrow and blood. It is more common
in adults (McKenna, 2000).
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) Patient s with ALL have lymphoid cells affected and it grows
rapidly. It is more common in children (McKenna, 2000).
Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) It affects myeloid cells and develops slowly initially. In the blood

companies without a comprehensive crisis plan vanish within two years of suffering a major disaster.
My approach is to develop the best crisis approach through communication. Crisis communication
usually has a variety of goals some of which conflict but the most important and universal it to reduce,
and contain harm. My next step is calling all organization so they can identify the hazard they face,
my first phone call would be the (MDCH) Michigan health community department, and then
hopefully they will contact the (American Biological Safety Association). When a crisis began to brew
as a communicator and a leader I wonder when to ask for help from the outside for instance public
relations agency which might be beneficial to keep the problem from completely overwhelming the
organization. This is why I have developed relationship with an agency in case I need them in
emergency like this. Potential advantages and challenges associated with communicating within the
organization and with the public and private sectors during this crisis situation.

Fourth Amendment 4th Amendment
The 4th amendment, search and seizure causes a lot of problems. Search and Seizure is the rights that
police have when they enter in a home. The standard for conducting a warrantless search, probable
cause, is the same standard necessary for a warrant to issue. An illegal search or illegal seizure is a
violation of your Fourth Amendment rights, and any evidence seized must be excluded from trial.
Normally police need a search warrant to enter into a home unless they get the consent to enter in the

Although commonly referred to as the automobile exception, this rule applies to any vehicle,
including boats. While in some ways, it is quite a broad exception, this rule limits the ability to search
those areas that might contain evidence of the type suspected to be present. In other words, if police
suspect that the occupant of a boat is smuggling people across the border, searching a small tackle box
on board would not be permissible. However, if they were looking for drugs, they could search the
tackle box. The rationale is that, if an officer has to take the time to obtain a warrant, the vehicle might
be out of reach before the warrant can be issued and executed. The rationale here is similar to the
automobile exception. Evidence that can be easily moved, destroyed or otherwise made to disappear

Altar Of Zeus Essay
The Altar of Zeus is a giant monument constructed during the reign of King Eumenes II (The Altar of
Zeus: Pergamon), which located on a terrace of the Acropolis in Pergamon. Since the Pergamene King
regarded his country as the successor of the Greek culture, there were numerous sculptural monuments
built to commemorate their military achievement and declare their roles as inheritors of Athens. The
Altar of Zeus is one of them, as well as the library and the sanctuary of Athena that are located in the
upper part of the altar on the Acropolis (Figure 1, map). Even though the Altar of Zeus is molded on

The several times of confrontation with Gauls were the most important parts of their victories and
bronze sculptural groups had made to memorialize the defeat of Gauls. Thus, the Altar of Zeus might
be the biggest monument they built for their victories. King Eumenes II, on the other hand, was the
crucial leader on the battlefield due to his sagacity and resourcefulness, who succeed his father and
brought his kingdom unparalleled growth (81). One thing interesting to notice that, in a vital war at
which the Pergamon incorporated the territory of Gauls, the leading military commander instructed the
sailors to collect many poisonous snakes and then throw them on the decks of Pergamene ships. This
impressive experience might be the prime stimuli for the numerous presentations of giant snakes on
the friezes of Altar of Zeus (82). Throughout the history of Pergamon, the war happened in the land

Pergamene that they were the protector and saviors of Greek culture. The Altar of Zeus was
discovered at the end of 19th century by a German expedition. These people collected the remains of
the Pergamon altar and shipped to Berlin. Because of the World War II and other reasons, it took

Urban Poverty in China
Over the past two decades, China has experienced rapid economic growth, which has also brought
about a rise in social and economic inequality. A nation that once operated under the principle of
egalitarianism, China now struggles with a level of inequality that has surpassed most of its East Asia
neighbours. In the 1980 s, poverty was a problem restricted mainly to rural areas, but recently it has
forayed into urban areas as well. Since the mid 1990 s, urban poverty has grown at a very fast pace
under the influence of globalization (Fulong, Webster, and Yuting 5). The economic restructuring of
China is a huge contributor to this phenomenon. The Chinese government officially recognized urban
poverty as a problem in 2001 through a report ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The earliest of these attempts was by expanding higher education, which succeeded in matriculation,
but did not provide sufficient stimulus towards consumption as families opted to save for higher
education. The attempt to commercialize the housing market also ended up in a similar scenario, as
families opted to increase their savings in order to afford the higher prices charged for apartments
(Riskin and Qin 25). The urban poverty problem arises from the disparity between lack of income
growth and massive growth in social wealth (Fulong, Webster, and Yuting 37). In order to remedy this
problem, the government should not develop policies targeting only the poor; instead, it should ensure
that there exists a resource framework that is not only adequate for rich and middle class needs, but
one that is accessible to everyone. A strategic readjustment that ensures commensurate growth in both
social and economic wealth would be highly beneficial to the people (Wanlong and Wong 26). The
growth of incomes for residents should be strengthened and should also be accompanied by reforms in
state owned corporations.
One of the ways to remedy the consumption problem is through a rise in income levels and
implementation of reforms in monopolized state owned industries to bring about income
redistribution. Income redistribution is a government role that can be attained through proper fiscal
policies like tax reforms to ensure a balanced and fair

A Dream Deferred
The poetry of Langston Hughes, the poet laureate of Harlem, is an effective commentary on the
condition of blacks in America during the 20th Century. Hughes places particular emphasis on
Harlem, a black area in New York that became a destination of many hopeful blacks in the first half of
the 1900ís. In much of Hughes poetry, a theme that runs throughout is that of a dream deferred. The
recurrence of a dream deferred in several Hughes poems paints a clear picture of the disappointment
and dismay that blacks in America faced in Harlem. Furthermore, as each poem develops, so does the
feeling behind a dream deferred, growing more serious and even angry with each new stanza. br br To

The poem changes moods with the lines I ve seen them come dark/ out of Penn Station / but the trains
are late. / The gates are open / Yet there re bars / at each gate. The people have not found what they
expected and hoped for in Harlem. These last lines help the reader to understand the feelings that
accompanied the harsh reality of Harlem. The addition of the blunt question, What happens / to a
dream deferred? maintains this understanding: this is the dream deferred, and this is what the people
were experiencing. The question is harsh and unyielding, and its position in the poem creates a feeling
of seriousness. Another Hughes poem, Same in Blues, attempts to establish further the idea of a dream
deferred, incorporating a type of dialogue between characters to explain the components of a dream
deferred, adding an element of anger to the end. The first stanza has a woman telling her man that she
has to keep moving, followed by the lines, There s a certain / amount of traveling / in a dream
deferred. This method continues through four stanzas, where peopl converse, and a new component is
introduced: a certain amount of nothing, a certain amount of impotence. The last component the poem
introduces is the most effective: There s liable / to be confusion / in a dream deferred. The poem
continues to say that there s liable to be confusion / when a dream

Beetlejuice Analytical Review
In the movie Beetlejuice, the theme is that the afterlife is not really the end for us all; we live on a
multiple level world between life and death, and need to respect the dead. The theme is idealistic and
not applicable in real life to all people. Throughout the movie, Burton reveals his take on the living
and life after death and the delicate interaction between the two. The character Otho, played by Glenn
Shadix is key to Burton s interpretation and scrutiny of the afterlife. Throughout the film Otho makes
comments about the dead and even goes as far to steal The Handbook for the Recently Deceased. Otho
comments on those who commit suicide and how they become civil servant s in the afterlife. Barbra

Adam swerves the steering wheel while over a bridge to avoid hitting a dog, and as a result the car is

their tragic death is a dog who s weight on a single plank is sustaining the balance of the car. Oddly

movies to kill off the main characters early on in the film, but Burton did so in order to show the

availabilities with regards to its Metro North Railroad. Two of the aforementioned railroad s lines, the
New Haven and Hudson Line are being looked upon as for having the potential to arrive in Penn
Station rather than terminating into Grand Central Terminal through already existing trackage. The
New Haven Line can utilize the same tracks that Amtrak trains use to run from Penn Station to (New
Rochelle), where it connects to Metro North s New Haven Line; the latter line can run along Amtrak s
Hell Gate Line with the possiblity of adding new train station along the way within the vicinities of Co
op City, Parkchester, and Hunts Point before reaching 34th street. The Hudson Line can run along
Amtrak s Empire Connection line that the agency uses to allow its Empire Service trains to transfer
from Metro North s Hudson Line into Penn Station. Along the line, new rail stations may be
implemented within the vicinities of West 125th and West 62nd Streets in Manhattan s West Side.
While an impressive feat, any developments along these lines will have to be (slowed down) until the
East Side Access is completed, allowing LIRR trains to terminate at Grand Central Terminal instead of
Penn Station; rail traffic in the station is high enough as it is to allow for more trains from a fourth
agency to have trains run into and terminate at. (advantages).

Carlos Cruchaga and his team searched for dementia related genetic variations in some of these
families and Their results were published in 2014 in the journals Nature and Nature Medicine. The
team identified variations in genes called phospholipase D3 (PLD3) and UNC5C that appear to
promote the risk of late onset Alzheimer s disease. The results of what they found inspired them to
keep looking for more. Dr. Cruchaga received his Association grant in 2011 for a study entitled Exome
Sequencing of Late Onset Alzheimer s Disease Families. Dr. Cruchaga selected 14 families to observe
who have inherited Late Onset Alzheimer. His team and him later analyzed the exomes from certain
members of these families, searching for gene variations linked to Alzheimer s.
This process initially identified a variation in PLD3 that was shown to double the risk of Alzheimer s
disease in some cases. Previous research has found that people with Alzheimer s tend to have lower
than normal levels of the PLD3 protein in their brains. This finding indicates that PLD3 may protect
the brain against Alzheimer s like changes.

foundation of all rock drumming. The backbeat is the driving rhythm that the snare drum plays. You

The Abols Of Symbolism In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The...
In life, people see different meanings to the same events based on their perspective. In the same way,
authors place symbols in a book to intensify the characters emotions and further the plot. Nathaniel
Hawthorne uses symbols in The Scarlet Letter such as the color red, sunshine, and various characters,
such as Chillingworth, Hester, and Pearl. Red is a color that can represent passion, sensitivity, or
power. Throughout the novel, the color red represents all of these descriptions. Hawthorne creates red
objects such as the rosebush, the letter A, and a meteor. The rosebush, as described by the author,
...symbolizes some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening
close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow, (Hawthorne 34). Being at the door of a dark prison, the
rosebush stands in contrast to the prison, a place of suffering and shame, and instead gives joy to all
who pass by. This symbol foreshadows Hester s future lifestyle and helps develop her character
throughout the story.
A similar theme of red is shown in the scarlet letter. The Puritans shame Hester by forcing her to wear
it, symbolizing her sin; however, she overcomes this shame by helping the needy. The author
describes the scarlet letter, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic
flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A, (Hawthorne 37). The letter is significant because while
the Puritans wanted her to feel ashamed by the letter,

The Chemistry Of Organic Contaminants

and others have conducted research on the bioremediation of organic contaminants in soil. Most of
this work has been associated with remediation of former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) sites, soils
from industrial areas and oil production areas have also been studied. The results have shown that: (1)
organic contaminants are biodegraded by indigenous soil microorganisms to a concentration that no

concentration are limited by the availability of the contaminants to the microorganisms; and (3) the

Bacterial enzymes will catalyze the insertion of oxygen into the hydrocarbon so that the molecule can
subsequently be consumed by cellular metabolism. Because of this oxygen is one of the most
important requirements for the biodegradation of oil. Table 1 shows the list of some of the
microorganisms which are involved in the bioremediation of oil contamination.
Microbial Seeding
Oil degrading microorganisms seem to be ubiquitous, with their number typically limited by the
hydrocarbon supply (Namazi et al., 2008). Another approach is to add exogenous microorganisms
with known degradative activities, either natural isolates or engineered (Narasimhan et al., 1983).
Seeding involves the introduction of allochthonous microorganisms into the natural environment for
the purpose of increasing the rate or extent, or both of biodegradation of pollutants. The rationale for
this approach is that the autochthonous microorganisms may not be capable of degrading the wide
range of potential substrates present in complex mixtures such as petroleum (Raghavan, 1998).
Terrestrial ecosystems differ from aquatic ecosystems in that soils contain higher concentrations of
organic and inorganic matter and generally, large number of microorganisms and are more variable in
terms of physical and chemical conditions (Bossert et al., 1984). The presence of indigenous
microorganisms which are highly adapted to a particular environment would negatively influence the

The Importance Of Safe Sex In High School
You wake up in the middle of the night to your child screaming. It s 4 in the morning and you have

it is. Teenage pregnancy is still a very real occurrence in America and there are more than 200,000
babies born each year to teenage moms. Due to the amount of babies born to girls under the age of 19,
parenting classes should be a required class in high schools. This parenting class could teach girls the
importance of safe sex, how much it costs to raise a baby and also show how much your life can
change when you have a child. Parenting classes could teach the importance of safe sex to teenage
girls. Many girls in high school take the risk of unprotected sex and to understand this issue we need
to look at the statistics. According to www.dosomething.org, 90% of teenage girls who have
unprotected sex end up pregnant within just one year. Also according to www.betterhealth.org, 51% of
females are sexually active before they get medication contraceptive prescribed by a doctor. 40% of
high school seniors also do not use a condom which significantly increases the risk of a pregnancy.
With the chance that condoms don t work or if it rips, the change of pregnancy increases. This class

to the Colonists whims. This is clearly portrayed through Wole Soyinka s novel. As clearly displayed
within the first act, There is a distinctive culture apart from the British introduced which portrays the
different values and customs that the Africans perform. Amusa whom is an African sergeant in the
native administration police working for the white British colonialists is an example of a puppet of
colonialism turning against the Africans systematic way of life through the adoption of British
customs and values. Though Amusa has converted towards the British Empire, he is still seen as
inferior in Pilking s eyes thus this shows that due to his origin, he will never be valued in the eyes of a

deprive the African people of their beliefs. They don t seem to realize that they are harming their own
culture but rather see it as an alien culture once they have fully adopted other methods of practice
through the English culture. Joseph is also a prime example of a character that has taken up a role
within the colonialist society through his acceptance of the catholic religion. Joseph is a convert

important to create an environment that is geared toward the proper developmental stage in order for
young children to get the most out their classroom. Children in the preoperational stage (2 yrs. 7 yrs.)
need a wide variety of hands on activities to promote development. Using Jean Piaget s Theory of

African American Dehumanization Effects On Slavery
African Americans came as a new people upon their arrival to America, and many of them were
forcefully removed from their previous lives and traditions. African slave culture today is closely
associated with voodoo rituals and bizarre dances, but there is much more to their fascinating culture
compared to what many people believe. Since the African Americans arrived as newcomers in
America, many attempted to resist the harsh reality of the New World as a cohesive unit. Even though
the African Americans were dehumanized by their proprietors, this constant effort of dehumanizing
the enslaved Africans failed, and as a matter of fact, the constant dehumanizing effects of their
proprietors caused them to form a unique culture in slavery. African Americans created a distinct
culture as slaves through their religion and music. This culture played a vital role in helping slaves
survive the suffering and misery of life. Slaves did not renounce their African identities and did not
give up their desire for freedom. Rather, they expressed their unique creativity and cultural heritage
that brought hope into a society that persecuted and enslaved them. Western African societies, which
were some of the main sources for slaves, shared the belief in a supreme creator to whom they prayed
and made sacrifices to. The religion of the African American slaves, like all religion, was essentially a
way of ordering the world, which laid down a basis for moral conduct and an explanation for the

Cultural Conflict In Tuptim s The King And I
The King and I takes place in Bangkok, Siam in the year 1862; after a recently widowed English
schoolteacher, Anna Leonowens, and her son, Louis, move there to give the King of Siam s children
and wives a westernized education in hopes that this will plunge Bangkok into the modern world.
Anna struggles with the king because their cultural beliefs are so different, but the conflict diminishes
after the king finds out that Britain would like to take over Siam. He calls upon Anna to help him look
less barbaric and she advises him to invite the British and show them how wrong they are by dining
with them and showing a play written by Tuptim, the king s latest wife, based on Uncle Tom s Cabin.
After the play Tuptim runs away with her lover, but is caught and returned to the palace where the
king kills her lover and Tuptim is never seen again to Anna s dismay. She decides to leave Siam, but
on the day of her departure she is informed that the king is sick; she returns to see him right before he
dies and his son is made king to rule in the ways of the West.
The main conflict in The King and I is a cultural dispute between Anna s western ideas and the king s
traditional cultural values. From the very beginning, they establish this issue by showing Anna, Louis
and the ship s captain dressed in western clothes with Anna wearing a crinoline and Louis and the ship
s captain dressed in a suit being met by the Prime Minister of Bangkok who is dressed in traditional

mostly into drugs and it also gave birth to a new genre of music called folk and rock . A few songs
which illustrate the sixties are The Times They Are a Changin by Bob Dylan, For What It s Worth by
Buffalo Springfield, Heroin by The Velvet Underground, and The Pusher by Steppenwolf. These ...

These transformations had a great impact for the future generations, even though the sixties had a lot
of negative influence due to the use of drugs. The four songs listed above give a clear picture to how,
the sixties made the society think on their feet as they were challenged in every negative aspect like
political issues, war, drugs and many more. To overcome these challenges, the society had to be united
and work as a unit for its betterment. This was achieved by eradicating negative effects and focusing
on a plan to accomplish a positive aftermath. Moreover, these songs had a great influence on mass
audiences around the world as the lyrics had a huge impact on them. The people were deeply affected
by the performance of these rock artists, as they paved a path to expressing their views on the society.
Furthermore, these artists expressed themselves through concerts, which drew the attention of
audiences in mass numbers. This lead to people being connected to these artists, which help them
express their views by being unified. However, these social transformations took decades to deliver a
positive environment in the society, even though the era had a lot of negative air around

How Do Recent Legislative Developments Affect The British...
When critically analysing how recent legislative developments have affected the British Constitution,
there are many different aspects to take into consideration. We need to consider the nature of the
British Constitution, which has been widely accepted as uncodified, being found in Acts of
Parliament, Court Judgements and Conventions. Whilst there is no written document forming the
Constitution, there are understood to be governing principles. These include the need for the
separation of powers and Parliamentary sovereignty. Three primary legislative developments affecting
these principles are: The separation of powers within the United Kingdom, the Legislature, the
Judiciary and the Executive, have been made much clearer over the years, ... Show more content on

The main issue that should first be outlined is that it can be argued that the Human Rights Act causes
an imbalance. The Act favours the judiciary over both the executive and the legislature as it gives the
judiciary the power to impose their authority over the other two. Section 3 of the Act gives the
judiciary the power to read and give effect to primary and secondary legislation in a way which will be
most compatible with the Convention Rights. This puts the judiciary in a sufficiently decent position
when interpreting legislation passed by the executive and the legislature due to the Act allowing them
to declare incompatibility with the European Convention on Human Rights and therefore negating the
provision in question. The case of R v A demonstrates the challenges that other legislation has faced
due to the ability for the judiciary to declare incompatibility. This was due to section 41 of the Youth
Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 restricting the admissibility at trial of evidence relating to the
sexual behaviour of those who made allegations of rape. The aim of Parliament was clearly to prevent
making the victim uncomfortable by being asked questions of sexual history which could impact
willingness to report crime and the prospects of a successful prosecution. However the judiciary
position was that upholding the defendant s Article 6 right to a

The Green River Killer Gary Ridgway is one of the most notorious and prolific serial killers in the
United States, having killed 49 women from 1982 1998. He is commonly referred to as the Green
River Killer because his first four victims were found near the Green River in Washington. Each
victim was strangled, often solely by Ridgeway s hands which is an exhausting way to kill;
additionally Ridgway was found guilty of rape and necrophilia ( Gary Leon Ridgway, n.d.). As a child
Ridgway often wet the bed: one of the factors in the homicidal triad; a series of three traits that serial
killers often display in some capacity. His relationship with his mother was troubled; she was
overpowering and often teased him in front of family about his problem with bedwetting. Later,
Ridgway admitted to having conflicting feelings of attraction to and wrath against his mother ( Gary
Leon Ridgway, n.d.). A low IQ of 82, and multiple failed years in school also contributed to his
difficult childhood ( Gary Leon Ridgway, n.d.). His first violent offense was at age 16 when he
stabbed a six year old boy, who lived through the attack. The boy stated that Ridgway had laughed and
said I always wondered what it would be like to kill as he left the scene ( Gary Leon Ridgway,

Essay on The Great Gig in the Sky
At a late Thursday night, I have received word that I would perform in a fancy ball room. With only
two weeks of experience I had a gig in front of a hundred people. Like many first gigs, the stage plays
tricks on you and makes you feel inferior. Stage fright had to go away at some point, so I decided for it
to be this Saturday night. Countless of hours put into this one night, I would practice day in and day
out. There was something for me to prove. You don t have to be naturally talented and experienced to
become successful or to perform at a high level. All it takes is a little self confidence and hard work. Is
two weeks enough for a musician to pick up an instrument and perform? A sunny day in Houston,
Texas. Just this morning I have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My heart quickly accelerated and continued to run for its life. I looked at my hands which were
beginning to moisture. The thought of performing with little experience struck me down. I was a
nervous wreck and I knew that within the next five minutes. I will give it my all or die trying. I
patiently waited to be called. A loud thumping noise is heard as I head over to the door and open the
door. It was my father. There is no need to feel nervous. You worked so hard and pushed yourself to
prove a point. Although that may be true, you worked so hard not only for success but also for the
enjoyment of performing. My dad had turned his back on me and faded away. I stood still thinking
about what he has told me. There was a better reason to why I stood up so late and practiced so much.
From the beginning, playing an instrument was a wonderful experience. With a confident look and a
brighter self esteem. I was ready to rock n roll! I treasured the moment. I put on my shades and
walked across the hall with a determined look. I made my way backstage and was suddenly called to
the stage. The spotlight was brighter than the suns ray. I foolishly put my shades back on and take a
look around me. Complete silence was around me. Such a quiet, yet eerie atmosphere. Eyes across the
stage followed me like a homing missile. I strum a chord and begin playing. A rough start was quickly
changed whenever the music began progressing. After all, all that practice made me

Essay On Piaget And Vygotsky
Piaget vs Vygotsky
Karim Medhat Nassar
H00119961
16th, October, 2014
Dr. C. Agnew
Human Development and Intelligence Piaget and Vygotsky, two psychologists that throughout history
have had what the present day engenderment would call unsettled beef . According to my research;
and prolonged Twitter tweets and Facebook statuses on the topic; both Piaget and Vygotsky s theories/
approaches to cognitive development are both correct. Both psychology grandmasters approached
their topics differently which will be elaborated upon throughout this composition.
Cognitive development is Piaget s famous theory. Jean Piaget s (1896 1980) approach to cognitive
development was explained as a progressive reconstruction of mental processes as a consequence to
biological development and environmental experiences. His ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Both Piaget and Vygotsky agreed that development in children occurs due to children being active
learners correlating their learning between both old and new information in order to reach a stage of
equilibrium. Both also agreed that egocentric speech was important in a child s cognitive development
and that cognitive development declines with age. Few but similar, Piaget and Vygotsky, two minds
contemplating on the same topic from other sides of the globe had interacting thoughts. However,
there are some differences too. Piaget believed that development was a stage that had to come first
before learning whereas Vygotsky believed that development and learning worked together through
socialization and language. Also, Piaget thought that there was a connection between biological
factors and cognitive development whereas Vygotsky appealed that intelligence from social
acquisitions initiated cognitive growth and

Cause And Effect Of Titanic
Introduction Iceberg right ahead! That one of the most unforgettable quotes from the movie, Titanic .
After seeing that movie for the first time I found the Titanic and her famous story, I found the Titanic
and very fascinating. Titanic is one of the greatest known maritime disasters in history to this day. She
was the grandest, most technologically advanced ship, and safest ship of her time. As you read this
report, you will be presented some effects Titanic had on things during her time period as well as in
the present that most people may not know about.
Body of Research During the time of her construction, Titanic was designed to be the largest,
grandest, safest, and most technologically advanced ship during her time. Her designers and engineers
set out to build a class of ocean liners that could compete against White Star Line s rival company,
Cunard. However, when Titanic, the second of her sister ships sunk on her maiden voyage, it shook
the world and it had a major impact on the world and its people. One of the main effects was the effect
on safety regulations. Titanic only carried enough lifeboats to sustain roughly half of the passengers
and crew on board. At the time, Titanic actually exceeded the amount of the lifeboats required by the
British Board of Trade regulations by 10 percent.
Although there was room on deck for twice as many lifeboats, the Titanic carried lifeboats for just
over half of the passengers and crew on board. The designer of the Titanic had allowed room on deck
for two rows of lifeboats, but one row was removed before the voyage began to make the deck more
aesthetically pleasing [Rogers and others, 1998]. With outdated British Board of Trade regulations, the
Titanic s twenty lifeboats actually exceeded requirements by 10 percent capacity [Refrigerator, 1998].
(Vicki Bassett, par. 21)
After Titanic s disaster, the new safety regulations required all ships to carry enough lifeboats to
sustain all of the passengers and crew aboard the ship. Moreover, the regulations also specify that the
lifeboats had to carry items such as oars, food, drinks, compasses, etc. Following the increase in
lifeboats, a mandatory use of wireless

Ethnography Dancing Skeletons
Ethnography Dancing Skeletons; Life and Death in West Africa Response: I found Katherine A.
Dettwyler s, Dancing Skeletons; Life and Death in West Africa very interesting though I did not like
the way in which it was written. To me it was written in a very scattered brain way, similar to how a
hyperactive childs diary would look like. At times when Dettwyler was trying to explain something,
she would go into tangents, mostly about her own personal opinions of the topic, which ruined the
mood of the book, lessened the impact of whatever she was talking about at the time and frankly, it
just annoyed me. I found it difficult to understand what was trying to be said and it made it difficult to
read. I think if she didn t try to cover so much in such a small book malnutrition, female circumcision
and other random topics I would have enjoyed it more. One thing that I did like was how she wasn t
political on her trips to Mali, she just talked to people. She didn t preach just talk and I think that s
what helped improve these people s lives. It was interesting but I wouldn t read it again or recommend
it like I did for the Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. Main Points: Though Dettwyler was
scatterbrained, I did recognize some of her main points for writing this book. Her main points were to
show the importance of nutritional health and how there are many ways to help people and the best
way to achieve this was to take a holistic approach and proper education. When the CARE

  • 2. Globalization in the Music industry Globalization in the Music Industry Jonathan Ben Ami ACOM 388 The music industry has been around for over two centuries (PBS). Its volatility can be measured by its ability to shift and change according to its time period, the technologies that arise through the ages and the public s shift in musical taste. The music industry is comprised of many different components, organizations and individuals that operate within it. Some of these components include the artists who compose the music themselves, the producers that engineer the sounds created by the artists, the companies that handle distribution and promotion of the recorded music, the broadcasters of the music such as radio ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Over the past decade, the use of CDs has been replaced with online streaming and retailing. This has eliminated much of the record companies revenues as they were used to making most of their profit off of distribution and promotion of physical copies of artists albums (Niemen). This has caused for a major shift and remodeling of major players in the music industries business models. Companies such Sony, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group have started to completely rethink the way they conduct business (Forbes). In the past record labels were not only responsible for production, distribution and promotion of an artist and his/her music, but they also acted as a bank (Forbes), funding the artists tours and recording sessions. Recently, these music giants have been moving towards becoming more of a modular network organization. What this means is that they are less occupied with the nitty gritty, and more focused on what they do best which is distribution and promotion. This also allows for more freedom of creativity for the artist as well as fairer split of profits (Forbes). This adaption of new business models clearly shows the versatility of the music industry in adapting to new times and technologies. One can only speculate the future of the music industry. As aforementioned, the music industry is in constant flux, changing shape and adapting to new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. War Is Kind Irony Comparative Essay on Stephen Crane s Use of Irony in War is Kind and A Mystery of Heroism If you ask a group of people how they feel about war, you re likely to get quite a few different responses. While some think war is the only way to settle our issues, others believe it is just another way to start them. People go into wars looking for change but the change they get isn t always the change they were searching for. Stephen Crane uses irony in War is Kind and A Mystery of Heroism to prove he is opposed to war by sarcastically pointing out the negative aspects of it and the feelings that surround them. In the poem War is Kind the author uses sarcasm and irony to point out the negative aspects of war while still reaching out to the people that support it. He points out how people are all supposed to think of death in the war as a normality by saying Make plain to them the excellence of killing, and a field where a thousand corpses lie . He describes the violence and death of the war while always resorting back to calling it kind, because that s what everyone perceives it as. The author makes it seem as though right when men are born they are immediately brought up to fight for our country by saying, Little souls who thirst for fight, These men were born to drill ... Cain and Abel were sons of Adam and Eve; however, Cain became very jealous and envious of his younger brother, Abel. The motive of Cain s jealousy towards his brother, Abel, derived from Abel s worship offering being accepted by God, their Creator. Abel s offering to God was from the yield of the first fruit of his flock. Cain also provided a worship offering to God. Nonetheless, Cain s presented offering wasn t acceptable. Hence, an envious spirit became birthed within Cain, and Cain murdered his brother, Abel, because God accepted Abel s worship offering but didn t accept Cain s offering. God became displeased with Cain and vowed that the ground would no longer yield its fruit towards Cain. In other words, God is not honored with murder. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are three sections in legal framework that makes up a properly structured organization; first, there is Home Depot, which has the right to modify employee work terms for legitimate business reasons. Second, there is the employee, who has the right of protection from harmful business practices, and lastly, there is the government of Canada, which balances both employee and Home Depot relations. Moreover, Employment Insurance Act provides qualifying employees with income replacement during periods of temporary unemployment. (E Laws, 2014) Because CPP and EI are both federally and provincially regulated, Home Depot must abide by these legislations. The Constitutional Law For Home Depot this includes abiding by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Big Data Is Not A New Technology Evaluation Big data is not a new technology, however applied to the rapidly growing and changing field of cyber security, big data companies are finding new and emerging ways to use big data analytics to gain a competitive edge (Emerging Trends in Big Data Analytsis for 2015, 2015). Big data analysis looks for and utilizes the patterns extracted from large volumes of data. (Kantarcioglu, 2015). One of the important uses of big data analytics is in the detection, discovery, and prevention of cyber security threats. How Big Data Analytics Can Be Used to Improve or Support Cyber Security Big data analytics shows a number of promising applications to improve and support cybersecurity. No longer can companies and organizations rely on traditional cyber security measures such as firewalls, encryption, and anti virus software. One of the most obvious of these is in the early detection and prevention of cyber threats. Using a visual analytic system, IT professionals can use software that will analyze large scale high dimensional cyber security datasets containing logs of a million computers (Chen, 2015). This analysis will help detect unexpected changes taking places in all areas of the data and identify potential anomalies, and help protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the data. Big data analytics can not only help detect potential future cyber attacks, it can be used to help detect a breach that is in progress (Kern, 2015). By applying machine learning techniques, new security events can be identified based on historical patterns (Enhancing Cybersecurity with Big Data: Challenges Opportunities, 2014). By definition, being happy is when something is feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. But, what is the true meaning of being happy? Many people view happiness in many different aspects. Pharrell Williams s song Happy did just that. It tells people that they don t have to seek hard to be happy. It is within one s self. Unlike most songs, there is no hidden message. • 10. Chinese Food In Jade Snow Wong s Fifth Chinese Daughter Looking at food as multidimensional, as something that shapes us, our identities, our cultures ( Stajcic, 8), Jade Snow Wong strongly believes that Chinese food is a marker of the Chinese identity. As a non verbal form of communication, food is notably at the center of every important event in our lives, such as birthdays, weddings, holidays and funerals. Within ritual contexts, food often stands in for expressions of life, love, happiness or grief (Stajcic,13). Therefore, she devotes a lot of space in Fifth Chinese Daughter to descriptions of Chinese food habits, customs of weddings and funerals, Chinatown daily life, as well as business dealing intending to reveal the mystery of the Chinese community (Bardhan, 186). She takes the white reader on a gastronomic tour , and she describes Chinese meals, takes pain to explain the ritualistic significance of certain meals and folks beliefs about the medicinal properties of certain ingredients (Stefanovici,216). Jade Snow s undoubted connection to the Chinese heritage is manifested in her endless employment of Chinese food cooking and recipes, and in her descriptions of festivals and family rituals. Her self discovery voyage is reflected in her journey through the various assortments of tastes of different Chinese dishes. From the very beginning of the novel, she proclaims that she is very lucky to be born [as] a Chinese daughter (43). She states that her Chinese background was [her] point of distinction (Wong, No ... • 11. Different Phases Of Solar And Magnetic Activity Cycles CHAPTER 2 Cosmic Ray Modulation during Different Phases of Solar and Magnetic Activity Cycles INTRODUCTION Cosmic rays are modulated as they traverse into the heliosphere. Measurements have shown that cosmic ray intensity varies on different time scales. On a longer time scale, the cosmic ray intensity variations in anti phase with solar activity having ≈ 11 year cyclicity is well known and studied extensively (e.g., see Venkatesan and Badruddin, 1990; Storini et al., 1995; Usoskin et al., 1998; Mavromichalaki et al., 1998; Kane, 2003; Sabbah and Rybansky, 2006; Ma et al., 2009; Chaudhary et al., 2011; Kudela, 2012). In addition, the ≈ 22 year modulation cycle in cosmic ray flux due to solar magnetic field polarity reversals is observed and modeled (e.g., Jokipii and Thomas, 1981; Potgieter and Moraal, 1985; Webber and Lockwood, 1988; Potgieter, 1995; Cliver and Ling, 2001; Laurenza et al., 2012). However, in order to understand these phenomena, it is important to understand how cosmic ray transport and propagation vary with the solar activity and solar magnetic polarity (Heber, 2013). Although sunspots have been used as a convenient index of solar activity, anti correlated with cosmic ray intensity, it has been recognized that they are not intrinsically related to the problem of solar modulation of cosmic rays. However, the diffusion coefficient changes during ≈ 11 year sunspot cycle, being smaller during periods of high solar activity than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. How Does Sam Mendes Use Camera Angles In American Beauty American Beauty Respond critically to significant aspects of visual and/or text(s) through close reading, supported by evidence. Sam Mendes is an intelligent and sophisticated director who has created many award winning films during his career. Some characteristics of his directorial style are; camera work with the specific use of close up s and the zooming effect, lighting/colour to symbolise characters/items and use sound to create tension and anticipation in the audience. I have chosen Mendes s 1999 masterpiece American Beauty to study and analyse. This film has scenes that incorporate all of Mendes s described characteristics and that help to give me a clear understanding of Mendes s directional style. Mendes uses the same camera work in both of the dining room scenes in American Beauty to create tension with the audience and to emphasise characters expressions and emotions to the viewers, leaving us in no doubt what each character is feeling. This allows the audience to understand each character more effectively and as a result, it challenges us to think about how we might feel in the same situation. A scene, in American Beauty, that Mendes uses effective camera work to enhance the audiences view of the characters is the dining room scene that features Lester, his wife Caroline and his daughter Jane. When the scene starts, Mendes uses a background music that sounds just like elevator music; Beli high: musical Pacific, with close up shots of pictures when Jane was younger and a vase full of red roses. However, as the scene continues Mendes uses a wide shot to show the entire dining room, this frame was then gradual zooming in up until the frame stopped in a position where you could see a mid shot of each character sitting at the table. When the conversation had started from Lester the audience could see how disengaged his wife and daughter were. They weren t interested in how his day went, they only cared about themselves. When the close ups are on Lester, the audience gets a vivid picture of a man who has lost his true self and who is already dead inside . Whereas when the close ups are on Jane or Caroline, you see someone who is pained from the discomfort of certain people around them Jane or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Physics Of Our Science Classes In the 21st, in our science classes, we are taught to believe that our world is actually made up of particles as the smallest constituents of matter. We are told that particles behave like waves because it makes no sense to teach that a particle moves faster than the speed of light, that particles can cause interference with one another, among other ridiculous things that we just never imagine a particle to do. What we are not told is that we never had to think about the smallest elements of matter, also known as, quanta, as particles. Instead, we can describe quanta as being excitations of fields, i.e., waves. There is no supporting evidence that a wave can behave like a particle, the evidence only points to experiments evaluating the data using wrong techniques, and assuming that a particle was in the place of a wave. • 20. Fourth Amendment 4th Amendment The 4th amendment, search and seizure causes a lot of problems. Search and Seizure is the rights that police have when they enter in a home. The standard for conducting a warrantless search, probable cause, is the same standard necessary for a warrant to issue. An illegal search or illegal seizure is a violation of your Fourth Amendment rights, and any evidence seized must be excluded from trial. Normally police need a search warrant to enter into a home unless they get the consent to enter in the home without one they normally don t go go into a home without anything. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although commonly referred to as the automobile exception, this rule applies to any vehicle, including boats. While in some ways, it is quite a broad exception, this rule limits the ability to search those areas that might contain evidence of the type suspected to be present. In other words, if police suspect that the occupant of a boat is smuggling people across the border, searching a small tackle box on board would not be permissible. However, if they were looking for drugs, they could search the tackle box. The rationale is that, if an officer has to take the time to obtain a warrant, the vehicle might be out of reach before the warrant can be issued and executed. The rationale here is similar to the automobile exception. Evidence that can be easily moved, destroyed or otherwise made to disappear before a warrant can be issued may be seized without a warrant. Furthermore, if a suspect enters private property while being pursued by officers, no warrant is required to enter that property in order to continue pursuit, even if the suspect is in no way connected with the property owner. No warrant is required to seize evidence in plain view if the police are legitimately in the location from which the evidence can be viewed. For example, an officer cannot illegally enter a suspect s backyard and then use the plain view exception to seize an illegally kept alligator living in the pool. The several times of confrontation with Gauls were the most important parts of their victories and bronze sculptural groups had made to memorialize the defeat of Gauls. Thus, the Altar of Zeus might be the biggest monument they built for their victories. King Eumenes II, on the other hand, was the crucial leader on the battlefield due to his sagacity and resourcefulness, who succeed his father and brought his kingdom unparalleled growth (81). One thing interesting to notice that, in a vital war at which the Pergamon incorporated the territory of Gauls, the leading military commander instructed the sailors to collect many poisonous snakes and then throw them on the decks of Pergamene ships. This impressive experience might be the prime stimuli for the numerous presentations of giant snakes on the friezes of Altar of Zeus (82). A nation that once operated under the principle of egalitarianism, China now struggles with a level of inequality that has surpassed most of its East Asia neighbours. In the 1980 s, poverty was a problem restricted mainly to rural areas, but recently it has forayed into urban areas as well. Since the mid 1990 s, urban poverty has grown at a very fast pace under the influence of globalization (Fulong, Webster, and Yuting 5). The economic restructuring of China is a huge contributor to this phenomenon. The Chinese government officially recognized urban poverty as a problem in 2001 through a report ... The earliest of these attempts was by expanding higher education, which succeeded in matriculation, but did not provide sufficient stimulus towards consumption as families opted to save for higher education. The attempt to commercialize the housing market also ended up in a similar scenario, as families opted to increase their savings in order to afford the higher prices charged for apartments (Riskin and Qin 25). The urban poverty problem arises from the disparity between lack of income growth and massive growth in social wealth (Fulong, Webster, and Yuting 37). In order to remedy this problem, the government should not develop policies targeting only the poor; instead, it should ensure that there exists a resource framework that is not only adequate for rich and middle class needs, but one that is accessible to everyone. A strategic readjustment that ensures commensurate growth in both social and economic wealth would be highly beneficial to the people (Wanlong and Wong 26). The growth of incomes for residents should be strengthened and should also be accompanied by reforms in state owned corporations. One of the ways to remedy the consumption problem is through a rise in income levels and implementation of reforms in monopolized state owned industries to bring about income redistribution. Hughes places particular emphasis on Harlem, a black area in New York that became a destination of many hopeful blacks in the first half of the 1900ís. In much of Hughes poetry, a theme that runs throughout is that of a dream deferred. The recurrence of a dream deferred in several Hughes poems paints a clear picture of the disappointment and dismay that blacks in America faced in Harlem. The addition of the blunt question, What happens / to a dream deferred? maintains this understanding: this is the dream deferred, and this is what the people were experiencing. The question is harsh and unyielding, and its position in the poem creates a feeling of seriousness. Another Hughes poem, Same in Blues, attempts to establish further the idea of a dream deferred, incorporating a type of dialogue between characters to explain the components of a dream deferred, adding an element of anger to the end. The first stanza has a woman telling her man that she has to keep moving, followed by the lines, There s a certain / amount of traveling / in a dream deferred. • 31. The Abols Of Symbolism In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The... In life, people see different meanings to the same events based on their perspective. In the same way, authors place symbols in a book to intensify the characters emotions and further the plot. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbols in The Scarlet Letter such as the color red, sunshine, and various characters, such as Chillingworth, Hester, and Pearl. Red is a color that can represent passion, sensitivity, or power. Throughout the novel, the color red represents all of these descriptions. Hawthorne creates red objects such as the rosebush, the letter A, and a meteor. The rosebush, as described by the author, ...symbolizes some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow, (Hawthorne 34). Being at the door of a dark prison, the rosebush stands in contrast to the prison, a place of suffering and shame, and instead gives joy to all who pass by. This symbol foreshadows Hester s future lifestyle and helps develop her character throughout the story. A similar theme of red is shown in the scarlet letter. The Puritans shame Hester by forcing her to wear it, symbolizing her sin; however, she overcomes this shame by helping the needy. The author describes the scarlet letter, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A, (Hawthorne 37). Table 1 shows the list of some of the microorganisms which are involved in the bioremediation of oil contamination. Microbial Seeding Oil degrading microorganisms seem to be ubiquitous, with their number typically limited by the hydrocarbon supply (Namazi et al., 2008). Another approach is to add exogenous microorganisms with known degradative activities, either natural isolates or engineered (Narasimhan et al., 1983). Seeding involves the introduction of allochthonous microorganisms into the natural environment for the purpose of increasing the rate or extent, or both of biodegradation of pollutants. The rationale for this approach is that the autochthonous microorganisms may not be capable of degrading the wide range of potential substrates present in complex mixtures such as petroleum (Raghavan, 1998). Terrestrial ecosystems differ from aquatic ecosystems in that soils contain higher concentrations of organic and inorganic matter and generally, large number of microorganisms and are more variable in terms of physical and chemical conditions (Bossert et al., 1984). African slave culture today is closely associated with voodoo rituals and bizarre dances, but there is much more to their fascinating culture compared to what many people believe. Since the African Americans arrived as newcomers in America, many attempted to resist the harsh reality of the New World as a cohesive unit. • 42. Counterculture Of The 1960s Essay The 1960s: An Era Which Gave Birth to a New Generation During the 1960s, the society went through an enormous change in every aspect. A few of these include movements related to counterculture, drugs, youth movement, and generation gap. As the course material implies, the counterculture refers to a movement against the way of life represented by mainstream culture (Amies). It gave birth to a new generation of people like the hippies, who were mostly into drugs and it also gave birth to a new genre of music called folk and rock . A few songs which illustrate the sixties are The Times They Are a Changin by Bob Dylan, For What It s Worth by Buffalo Springfield, Heroin by The Velvet Underground, and The Pusher by Steppenwolf. These transformations had a great impact for the future generations, even though the sixties had a lot of negative influence due to the use of drugs. The four songs listed above give a clear picture to how, the sixties made the society think on their feet as they were challenged in every negative aspect like political issues, war, drugs and many more. To overcome these challenges, the society had to be united and work as a unit for its betterment. This was achieved by eradicating negative effects and focusing on a plan to accomplish a positive aftermath. Moreover, these songs had a great influence on mass audiences around the world as the lyrics had a huge impact on them. The people were deeply affected by the performance of these rock artists, as they paved a path to expressing their views on the society. Furthermore, these artists expressed themselves through concerts, which drew the attention of audiences in mass numbers. This lead to people being connected to these artists, which help them express their views by being unified. • 43. How Do Recent Legislative Developments Affect The British... When critically analysing how recent legislative developments have affected the British Constitution, there are many different aspects to take into consideration. We need to consider the nature of the British Constitution, which has been widely accepted as uncodified, being found in Acts of Parliament, Court Judgements and Conventions. Whilst there is no written document forming the Constitution, there are understood to be governing principles. These include the need for the separation of powers and Parliamentary sovereignty. Three primary legislative developments affecting these principles are: The separation of powers within the United Kingdom, the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Executive, have been made much clearer over the years, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main issue that should first be outlined is that it can be argued that the Human Rights Act causes an imbalance. The Act favours the judiciary over both the executive and the legislature as it gives the judiciary the power to impose their authority over the other two. Section 3 of the Act gives the judiciary the power to read and give effect to primary and secondary legislation in a way which will be most compatible with the Convention Rights. This puts the judiciary in a sufficiently decent position when interpreting legislation passed by the executive and the legislature due to the Act allowing them to declare incompatibility with the European Convention on Human Rights and therefore negating the provision in question. The case of R v A demonstrates the challenges that other legislation has faced due to the ability for the judiciary to declare incompatibility. This was due to section 41 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 restricting the admissibility at trial of evidence relating to the sexual behaviour of those who made allegations of rape. The aim of Parliament was clearly to prevent making the victim uncomfortable by being asked questions of sexual history which could impact willingness to report crime and the prospects of a successful prosecution. However the judiciary position was that upholding the defendant s Article 6 right to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Green River Killer Gary Ridgway is one of the most notorious and prolific serial killers in the United States, having killed 49 women from 1982 1998. He is commonly referred to as the Green River Killer because his first four victims were found near the Green River in Washington. Each victim was strangled, often solely by Ridgeway s hands which is an exhausting way to kill; additionally Ridgway was found guilty of rape and necrophilia ( Gary Leon Ridgway, n.d.). As a child Ridgway often wet the bed: one of the factors in the homicidal triad; a series of three traits that serial killers often display in some capacity. His relationship with his mother was troubled; she was overpowering and often teased him in front of family about his problem with bedwetting. Later, Ridgway admitted to having conflicting feelings of attraction to and wrath against his mother ( Gary Leon Ridgway, n.d.). A low IQ of 82, and multiple failed years in school also contributed to his difficult childhood ( Gary Leon Ridgway, n.d.). His first violent offense was at age 16 when he stabbed a six year old boy, who lived through the attack. The boy stated that Ridgway had laughed and said I always wondered what it would be like to kill as he left the scene ( Gary Leon Ridgway, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Essay on The Great Gig in the Sky At a late Thursday night, I have received word that I would perform in a fancy ball room. With only two weeks of experience I had a gig in front of a hundred people. Like many first gigs, the stage plays tricks on you and makes you feel inferior. Stage fright had to go away at some point, so I decided for it to be this Saturday night. Countless of hours put into this one night, I would practice day in and day out. There was something for me to prove. You don t have to be naturally talented and experienced to become successful or to perform at a high level. All it takes is a little self confidence and hard work. Is two weeks enough for a musician to pick up an instrument and perform? A sunny day in Houston, Texas. Just this morning I have ... The thought of performing with little experience struck me down. I was a nervous wreck and I knew that within the next five minutes. I will give it my all or die trying. I patiently waited to be called. A loud thumping noise is heard as I head over to the door and open the door. It was my father. There is no need to feel nervous. You worked so hard and pushed yourself to prove a point. Although that may be true, you worked so hard not only for success but also for the enjoyment of performing. My dad had turned his back on me and faded away. I stood still thinking about what he has told me. There was a better reason to why I stood up so late and practiced so much. From the beginning, playing an instrument was a wonderful experience. With a confident look and a brighter self esteem. I was ready to rock n roll! I treasured the moment. I put on my shades and walked across the hall with a determined look. I made my way backstage and was suddenly called to the stage. The spotlight was brighter than the suns ray. I foolishly put my shades back on and take a look around me. Complete silence was around me. Such a quiet, yet eerie atmosphere. Eyes across the stage followed me like a homing missile. I strum a chord and begin playing. A rough start was quickly changed whenever the music began progressing. After all, all that practice made me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Agnew Human Development and Intelligence Piaget and Vygotsky, two psychologists that throughout history have had what the present day engenderment would call unsettled beef . According to my research; and prolonged Twitter tweets and Facebook statuses on the topic; both Piaget and Vygotsky s theories/ approaches to cognitive development are both correct. Both psychology grandmasters approached their topics differently which will be elaborated upon throughout this composition. Cognitive development is Piaget s famous theory. Jean Piaget s (1896 1980) approach to cognitive development was explained as a progressive reconstruction of mental processes as a consequence to biological development and environmental experiences. Both Piaget and Vygotsky agreed that development in children occurs due to children being active learners correlating their learning between both old and new information in order to reach a stage of equilibrium. Few but similar, Piaget and Vygotsky, two minds contemplating on the same topic from other sides of the globe had interacting thoughts. However, there are some differences too. Piaget believed that development was a stage that had to come first before learning whereas Vygotsky believed that development and learning worked together through socialization and language. • 47. Cause And Effect Of Titanic Introduction Iceberg right ahead! That one of the most unforgettable quotes from the movie, Titanic . After seeing that movie for the first time I found the Titanic and her famous story, I found the Titanic and very fascinating. Titanic is one of the greatest known maritime disasters in history to this day. She was the grandest, most technologically advanced ship, and safest ship of her time. As you read this report, you will be presented some effects Titanic had on things during her time period as well as in the present that most people may not know about. Body of Research During the time of her construction, Titanic was designed to be the largest, grandest, safest, and most technologically advanced ship during her time. Her designers and engineers set out to build a class of ocean liners that could compete against White Star Line s rival company, Cunard. However, when Titanic, the second of her sister ships sunk on her maiden voyage, it shook the world and it had a major impact on the world and its people. One of the main effects was the effect on safety regulations. Titanic only carried enough lifeboats to sustain roughly half of the passengers and crew on board. At the time, Titanic actually exceeded the amount of the lifeboats required by the British Board of Trade regulations by 10 percent. Although there was room on deck for twice as many lifeboats, the Titanic carried lifeboats for just over half of the passengers and crew on board. The designer of the Titanic had allowed room on deck for two rows of lifeboats, but one row was removed before the voyage began to make the deck more aesthetically pleasing [Rogers and others, 1998]. With outdated British Board of Trade regulations, the Titanic s twenty lifeboats actually exceeded requirements by 10 percent capacity [Refrigerator, 1998]. (Vicki Bassett, par. 21) After Titanic s disaster, the new safety regulations required all ships to carry enough lifeboats to sustain all of the passengers and crew aboard the ship. Moreover, the regulations also specify that the lifeboats had to carry items such as oars, food, drinks, compasses, etc. Following the increase in lifeboats, a mandatory use of wireless ... • 48. Ethnography Dancing Skeletons Ethnography Dancing Skeletons; Life and Death in West Africa Response: I found Katherine A. Dettwyler s, Dancing Skeletons; Life and Death in West Africa very interesting though I did not like the way in which it was written. To me it was written in a very scattered brain way, similar to how a hyperactive childs diary would look like. At times when Dettwyler was trying to explain something, she would go into tangents, mostly about her own personal opinions of the topic, which ruined the mood of the book, lessened the impact of whatever she was talking about at the time and frankly, it just annoyed me. I found it difficult to understand what was trying to be said and it made it difficult to read. I think if she didn t try to cover so much in such a small book malnutrition, female circumcision and other random topics I would have enjoyed it more. One thing that I did like was how she wasn t political on her trips to Mali, she just talked to people. She didn t preach just talk and I think that s what helped improve these people s lives. It was interesting but I wouldn t read it again or recommend it like I did for the Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. Main Points: Though Dettwyler was scatterbrained, I did recognize some of her main points for writing this book. Her main points were to show the importance of nutritional health and how there are many ways to help people and the best way to achieve this was to take a holistic approach and proper education.
