The Tragedy Of Theseus, The King Of Herakles
The Athenian hero Theseus served as a model of Athenian civic duty and shaped his audience s
conception of right and wrong behavior. Theseus, king of Athens, was believed to be a great hero and
served as the Athenian counterpart of Herakles. Primarily, Theseus was a source of Athenian pride and
civic duty. Solely on his journey from Troezen to Athens, Theseus goes through six labors in which he
defeats six monster and human adversaries that had plagued Greece while giving them a taste of their
own medicine. He defeated Periphetes, who used his club to beat passersby to death, by using his own
club to bludgeon him to death. He defeated Sinis the robber and used his cruel murder method against
him, tying Sinis between two trees that were bent down to the ground, and then letting the trees go,
tearing him apart. This trend continued through the killing of the Crommyonian pig, Sciron the robber,
King Cercyon the wrestler, and procrustes the stretcher. Time and again, Theseus risked his life to rid
the world of evil and make greece a safer place. Theseus clearly had a very strong sense of justice, he
refused to stand by and allow monsters, human or otherwise, to roam the country unchecked. His
strong sense of justice compelled him to punish these evildoers in a manner replicating their own
crimes. In his labors, and his defeat of the Minotaur, Theseus also shows the distinction between the
uncivilized monsters, that had previously roamed Greece, and what Athens would become under

Ice Breakers
ICE BREAKERS When it comes to team building, what can look like a series of simple games and
activities can actually do wonders for creating temporary and even lasting friendships. These tasks
teach the benefits of working as a team and discourage too much self centered thinking. However,
regardless of the age group involved, some ice breakers team building are a good way to start. What
are ice breakers team building? Essentially, these are fun ways to get to know the group around you,
whether it s a physical game or a verbal one. These are incredibly useful, whether you re about to
spend an entire summer at camp or you re just at a motivational seminar and you re getting to know

Primary Lymphedema Paper
Primary lymphedema occurs due to an intrinsic, most of the time genetic, aberration in the lymphatic
vasculature. Over the past decade, some of the key genetic factors leading to primary lymphedema
have been elucidated. In 2013, Connel and his colleagues created a clinical algorithm for the diagnosis
of primary lymphatic dysplasia [Figure 3.0].23 The figure demonstrates nine causal mutations linked
to primary lymphedema and we will briefly discuss some of these.
3.1 Milroy Disease
Milroy disease is a form of primary lymphedema, which presents with progressive swelling of the face
and lower extremities.24 It is characterized by the absence or marked diminution of lymphatic
vessels.25 Some cases have been associated with missense mutations in vascular endothelial growth
factor receptor 3 receptor tyrosine kinase (VEGFR3).26 The underlying pathology for this disease is
not the mere absence of initial lymphatic capillaries but the inadequacy of initial lymphatic fluid
absorption.3
3.2. Hennekam Syndrome
Hennekam syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, is characterized by lymphangiectasia along
with mental retardation.27 Limb and facial edema may be apparent at ... Show more content on

Occurrence of lymphedema and distichiasis at puberty comprise the clinical diagnostic criteria.31 In
LDS, germline mutations in forkhead transcription factor C2 (FOXC2) gene mutations have been
implicated.31 This gene is integral in the development of lymphatic vasculature.32 In patients with
FOXC2 mutation, 100% will have superficial vein incompetence while a third will have deep vein
incompetence.33 The resulting venous stasis explains the edema. In a very recent study, even
mutations FOXC1 were noted to cause abnormal lymphatic vessel morphogenesis.34 This discovery
recognizes both FOXC1 and FOXC2 as fundamental controllers of lymphangiogenesis and
demonstrates another potential target for the management of

Central Dewitt Football Program Analysis
The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of
knowledge, but rather a lack of will, and a lack to change Vince Lombardi. Central Dewitt s football
program usually has a tradition of great success and excellent morals. Unfortunately, in the 2014 and
2015 football season they have a combined record of 5 13, which does not live up to the standards of
the DeWitt community. There are many problems circulating the football program, but most involve
the lack of experience in coaching. Central Dewitt s losing football record for the past two seasons can
be solved by coaches properly developing their athletes, incorporating new offensive and defensive
strategies, and increasing player participation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Including, beating their arch rivals the Maquoketa Cardinal 47 of the 83 times playing them
(CDSfootball). The Sabers currently run an offense called the triple option. In this more dynamic and
elaborate offense, they leave opponents unblocked making them choose to tackle the quarterback or
the fullback. If they tackle the fullback, the quarterback then has the option to keep it himself or pitch
it to the running back thus giving us the triple option. Head coach Mike Miller brought the offense to
Central Dewitt in 2012 during his debut season. The sabers saw great success in Miller s first season
going 8 4, winning the district six title and rushing for 3,644 yards (CDSfootball). It did not take long
for opposing coaches to find ways to counter this run dominant offense. In coach Millers previous two
seasons the sabers have only run for a combined total 3,700 yards (CDSfootball). This is not the only
problem that lies within Central Sabers schemes. The Sabers run a base 4 3 defense, which means
there are 4 down lineman and 3 linebackers. Although this is a popular defense, in modern football
you need to run multiple defenses to throw off opposing offenses. The sabers do not run multiple
defenses, and this allows offenses to get in a rhythm, and as a result the sabers allowed an average of
36 points a game in 2015 (quicksstats). The need for change is evident in the Central Sabers program.
The real question is how to change the schemes, so the Sabers can get back on their winning

The Cab Rank Rule
Research Essay
Introduction
Australia has taken from English Law in adopting the cab rank rule, encoded in The Victorian Bar
Incorporated Practice Rules 2009 (Vic). This essay will discuss the application of the rule, the
strengths and weaknesses and will conclude to discuss why the rule should remain an integral part of
the Bar despite many calls for its abolition.
What is the cab rank principle ?
The cab rank rule states that a lawyer practicing solely as a barrister must accept a brief in a field they
profess to practice. Barristers are professionally bound by this duty if the brief is in the barrister s
capacity, skill and expertise; the barrister is available to appear and is not committed to other
engagements which may inhibit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second rationale behind the cab rank rule is that is protects barristers from adverse consequences
that could arise from accepting a contentious brief. A barrister may be subjected to public scrutiny or
criticism from those who believe the barrister is sympathizing with a repugnant criminal. Yet, with the
existence of the cab rank rule, the obligation to accept the brief provides the barrister with a
justification. In theory, this is an essential strength of the cab rank rule, however, in practice in may be
redundant. This rationale is on the premise that the layperson is aware of the cab rank rule, a
proposition that is far from the truth. In 2010, Brian Walters, a QC, was running for the Greens and his
Labor opponent attacked him for once taking a brief for a brown coal company. The fact that a
politician is not aware of the cab rank rule suggests that members of the general public would also be
unaware of the rule, thereby denying barristers the protection the rule purports to give.
Lastly, a barrister must refuse to accept a brief if they would be placed in a conflict of interest or
would otherwise be detrimental to the administration of justice. However, the barrister holding strong
moral views inconsistent with the subject matter is not reasonable ground to refuse a brief. If the client
still wishes to proceed despite the barrister s

the genre of science fiction. These authoritative figures create ideas, which can be used in analyzing
science fiction works. The Psychology of Science Fiction, David Hartwell, and Isaac Asimov are
science fiction analyzers and well known people in the science fiction genre. The Psychology if
Science Fiction gives the authoritative idea of new trains of thought. New trains of thought are used
for a new idea for a person individually or for a group culturally. David Hartwell gives the idea of
intellect over irrationality and emotion. This idea is used when a character uses their intellect rather

Ender is one of the best commanders the International Fleet has ever wanted. He is put through the
physical task that no battle student has ever done before. At Battle School, Ender is the commander of
the dragon army, and is pressured everyday to compete in a battle against another army. Ender wins
seven out of the seven battles he played in a week (Card 186). This shows Ender s intellect over his
irrationality and emotion. It also shows a new train of thought, because no other army is put through
these stressful battle situations. When Ender takes part in the commander school training, there is a
part where Ender unleashes against Petra (Card 284). Ender let his emotions get to him as they
normally do. Ender sometimes lets his emotions too much, rather than think, he does irrational stuff.
Ender is a good for David Hartwell s idea, but yet he contradicts it. Ender finds himself in a hard
situation. He decides to go and restart the bugger colony. This scientific advancement that Ender
wants to bring to the buggers is pessimistic for the International Fleet, and they cannot do anything to

Muhammad Ali Is NOT a Hero Essay
Muhammad Ali Is NOT a Hero
To be a hero, someone could save others, respect their country, and care. The firefighters from the Fire
Department of New York have all of these characteristics, even thought they aren t perfect. Everyday,
they risk their lives to save others. They show their patriotism even on the trucks they drive through
the cities. Most of all they don t just do it because it s their job; they do it because they care. Unlike
the people at FDNY, Muhammad Ali is violent, separatist, and rude.
The first reason Muhammad Ali isn t a hero is because he is violent. For almost all of his life he
fought in boxing matches that all started when he was a boy because he wanted to beat up the kid who
stole his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second reason Muhammad Ali isn t a hero is he was a separatist who did not respect his country.
He became part of the Nation of Islam. They believed Blacks should break off from other Americans.
Also, in April 1967, Ali refused induction into the U.S. Army, claiming exempt status as a Muslim
minister (Abeles). When asked why he dodged the draft, Ali replied, I ain t got no quarrel with them
Viet Cong, no Viet Cong ever called me n (Biography.com). Because his separatist beliefs and actions,
Muhammad Ali did not show respect for his country.
The third reason Muhammad Ali isn t a hero is because he is rude. He would always taunt his
opponents. Before one of his matches, he taunted Liston calling him the bear and verbally defused the
famous stare as being just plain ugly (Myers 46). When Ali fought George Foreman in Zaire, he had
the Africans chant Ali bumbaye which means Ali kill him (When). Some sportswriters were against
Ali for this reason. Only a rude man like Muhammad Ali would do and say these things.
Because of his violence, rudeness, and separatist beliefs, Muhammad Ali in no way compares to the
men at the Fire Department of New York. While they have saved lives, Muhammad Ali has just beaten
people up. Spiderman is another example of a hero; he saved lives, respected his country, and cared
for the people he was saving. FDNY is just as good as Spiderman,

Can the Subaltern Speak Summary
Can the Subaltern Speak? Summary Gayatri Spivak Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is an unsettling voice
in literary theory and especially, postcolonial studies. She has describes herself as a practical
deconstructionist feminist Marxist and as a gadfly . She uses deconstruction to examine how truth is
constructed and to deploy the assertions of one intellectual and political position (such as Marxism) to
interrupt or bring into crisis another (feminism, for example). In her work, she combines passionate
denunciations of the harm done to women, non Europeans, and the poor by the privileged West with a
persistent questioning of the grounds on which radical critique takes its stand. Her continual
interrogation of assumptions can make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As poststructuralism would have it, human consciousness is constructed discursively. Our subjectivity
is constructed by the shifting discourses of power which endlessly speak through us, situating us here
and there in particular positions and relations. In these terms we are not the authors of ourselves. We
do not construct our identities, we have it written for us; the subject cannot be sovereign over the
construction of selfhood. Instead the subject is decentered, in that its consciousness is always being
constructed from positions outside of itself. It follows then that the individual is not a transparent
representation of the self but an effect of discourse. Spivak argues that surprisingly for these figures,
when Foucault and Deleuze talks about oppressed groups such as the working classes they fall back
into precisely these uncritical notions of sovereign subjects by restoring to them a fully centred
consciousness. In addition they also assume that the writing of intellectuals such as themselves can
serve as a transparent medium through which the voices of the oppressed can be represented. The
intellectual is cast as a reliable mediator for the voices of the oppressed, a mothpiece through which
the oppressed can clearly speak. Spivak articulates her reasons for her worries in the first part of the
essay, applying MICHEL FOUCAULT s understanding of epistemic violence to the remotely
orchestrated, far flung, and heterogeneous project to

Essay on The Fires of Jubilee by Stephen B. Oates
The Fires of Jubilee by Stephen B. Oates
The Fires of Jubilee by Stephen B. Oates describes a sad and tragic story about a man named Nat
Turner who was born into slavery and his fight to be free. Ironically, his willingness to do anything,
even kill, to gain his freedom leads to his own demise. From the title of this book, The Fires of
Jubilee, ; a reader can truly grasp the concept that there is trouble, chaos, and mayhem brewing in the
month of August.
This story was not only riveting, but also one that kept me on my heels for almost the entire time that I

With this newly acquired knowledge, he began preaching the Old Testament to the other slaves, about
what freedom meant and how they should fight for it. He mainly preached to a group of five other
slaves, with the addition of two more later on about the concept of freedom. Nat felt as if he was
driven into some corner of slavery from which there was no return, only his imagination was he free.
He had a burning rage to fight against the Serpent, and slay the enemy with their own weapon.
During their March of Destruction, ; things began to get out of hand. Though he was willing to go to
extreme measures to gain his freedom, the events that ended up taking place ended up becoming a
massacre. Due to Nat s rebellion, 60 whites and 200 blacks died. Though Nat did in fact partake in the
killings, the author makes it out to seem as if in the end, Nat did not really want this to become a
bloodbath. Although he thought that it was getting out of hand, he stood idly by, watching the
massacre take place. In the end, a total of 50 stood trial, and 21, including Nat Turner were hung for
the rebellion.
After the rebellion and the death of Nat Turner, Garrison and Knapp, whom believed that Negroes had
as much to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as whites enjoyed, published the
Liberator ; in Boston, demanding that slaves be emancipated and freed. Though it cannot be said with

have been linked to the development of C. Difficile infections. In comparison these articles provide
evidence on how the overuse of antibiotics contribute the development of drug resistant organisms and
ways that this can be avoided. The settings of where these studies were conducted were in a variety of
settings hospitals, nursing homes and clinics. These studies were conducted in different countries and
states, this shows that the overuse/misuse of antibiotics contribute to multidrug resistant infections.
The misuse/overuse of antibiotics is an issue that requires attention. Because of the development of C

A Brief Note On The Ethiopian Church Of Egypt
Rastafarianism is the child of two very distinct and unrelated entities. One parent is Garveyism, an
ideology which at its essence is a Black supremacist socio political movement with the end goal of
repatriating African descendants in the diaspora back to Africa and and Ethiopian Orthodox
Christianity. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is one of the five monophysite churches, characterised
by their rejection of the Council of Chalcedon 451 AD(Ethiopian) This council was convened in an
effort to create uniformity in regards to doctrine amongst varying christian sects. One of the many
decisions agreed upon was that God had two distinct natures in Christ. Ethiopian orthodox christianity
vehemently disagreed with the council and instead decided that Christ s humanity cannot be separated
from his divinity.(Encyclopedia britannica) The Ethiopian church was for most of its existence placed
under the jurisdiction of the Coptic Church of Egypt. In 1959 the Ethiopian church became
independent from Egypt when an Ethiopian patriarch was elected (Ethiopian) It most be noted that
although the Ethiopian Orthodox church and associated teachings are accepted by the Rastafarian
community all other christian denominations are rejected. They hold the belief that all other religious
institutions, buildings, churches and schools, including Jamaican Pentecostal revivalism although
indigenous, are created with the sole intent of keeping black people down. They believe that Jamaican

The Biblical Reverse Of Ephesians
The Biblical verse of Ephesians 4:25 states, Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak
truth with his neighbor for we are members of one another. (Maxwell and Elmore, 2007, p. 1465) 1.
What does that mean to you in the context of your organization? Within the context of my
organization, the Biblical verse of Ephesians 4:25 means to me is that there is a big difference between
telling truth and telling lies, especially since I work part time for my family based cleaning business.
For the most part, it is easier said than done that family members who are part of family businesses
can separate family from business. Since I have been part of my family based cleaning business since
I was a child, I learned quite early that separating family from business maybe difficult, but possible.
As a result, I learned at an early age that because I have family members that are employees as well,
does not mean that I can get away with lying and speak untruthfully to them. If I choose not to lie and
speak truthfully to non family employees at an organization, why would I choose to lie and speak
untruthfully to employees that are my family? Therefore, regardless if I am working at my family
business or not working with my family business, it is overwhelmingly better to not tell lies and speak
truthfully with my words. 2. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

also a way to cause and maintain the European domination in societies. For instance, the content of
media usually reports the positive sides of the European things such as places, enviroment, and

Europeans in different places, especially in Asian places. 3. The modern policies from goverments are
also causing and maintaining the European domination in societies. It just likes what we had

Australian Coastal Beaches Analysis
Coastal engineering is an increasing field of importance due to the growing population in coastal areas
and the trend of moving to coastal communities. Currently over 90% of Australians live within the
narrow and dynamic coastal fringe (Mariani Turner 2013). Approximately one half of the Australian
coastline consists of sandy beaches and it is projected that they will be the worst impacted by the
predicted global warming (Cooke et al. 2013). Increasingly, sandy beaches are being squeezed
between rising sea levels and extreme weather events on the seaward side and coastal infrastructure on
the landward side (Cooke et al. 2013). Erosion, accretion and retreat are all naturally occurring

The Korean Ministry of Unification has joined forces with Cheil Worldwide, the advertising arm of
Samsung, to unveil the strangely beautiful Piano of Unification, a project which commemorates Korea
s 70th anniversary of liberation from Japanese occupation, and aims to enhance interest in the national
reunification of South and North Korea. The piano in question uses barbed wire pulled from the inter
Korean border (a literal symbol of the nation s division) for its strings, and will be exhibited and
performed on in public at Seoul Museum of Art in central Seoul. All of the wires used in the piano
were taken from the border fence while some changes were made to one of the pianos to allow it a

Gender Roles In Keats, Lady Of Shalott, And Goblin Market
Legends, myths and historical imaginings have been used for centuries to tell moral lessons, stories of
love and tragedy, and offer fantasy and magic in return. John Keats, Alfred Tennyson, and Christina
Rossetti all managed to incorporate legend or fantasy into their poems in way in which they can be
used as further insight into the authors ideologies and personal desires. In Ode on a Grecian Urn , The
Lady of Shalott , and Goblin Market all use legend, myth and historical imagination to describe the
authors ideas of desire, innocence, tragedy and gender roles.
Keats uses the image on the urn to express desire that can never be realized. The urn depicts a scene of
a man and a woman about to kiss, but this image is frozen in time. This ... Show more content on

In Goblin Market men are absent, but Laura and Lizzie still grow up to be wives to these un
mentioned men, insinuating in this tale that that is there only job as women should only be wives and
mothers when older. In The Lady of Shalott , it is very clear that women should remain in the
domestic space, just as the Lady remains trapped in her tower with her weaving, while men may be in
public, just as Lancelot can travel to Camelot and be there among people and not secluded. These
stories well define the Victorian gender normalities where ladies must remain pure and virtuous and
must remain in the house with their sewing or painting or what not while the men can travel around
town and enjoy clubs and public events without having to be guarded by anyone. They may also take
jobs and roles other than just being husbands and fathers. While these poems may have been myth, the
gender roles were a great reality in the 19th

The War Never Changes Of Bethesda s Hit Game Franchise...
War. War never changes. These are the iconic opening lines of Bethesda s hit game franchise Fallout,
but are they accurate? War has expanded into a new electronic frontier, where the soldiers are hackers
and the targets are anything with wires. To understand this new kind of war, we must analyze what it
is, who has this power, and how they can use it. Cyberwarfare has the potential to do to global politics
what nuclear warfare did half a century ago. To begin with, it is essential to understand what cyberwar
is. Cyber essentially refers to anything electronic or internet based. A cyber attack is when one entity
hacks into the resources of another entity. This resource could be almost anything an email inbox, a
bank account, a stoplight, a factory, a power grid, or even a nuclear device. Cyberwarfare is to cyber
attacks as nuclear war is to nuclear missiles; an exchange between two nations in an attempt for one to
damage another. Cyber attacks come in two main forms: espionage and sabotage. In an espionage
operation, the objective is to gain intelligence on strategic resources. For example, imagine a country
hacking into a communication network to survey enemy troop movements or electronically stealing
the blueprints for a missile. The other kind, sabotage, is much more direct. In this case, the objective is
to either take control over or destroy an asset. This can range from something as basic as shutting
down a website to something as massive and destructive as

Windy City Racial Profiling Is An Act Of Discrimination Essay
WINDY CITY RACIAL PROFILING 1
Windy City Racial Profiling
Edin Hodzic
Loyola University Chicago
Introduction Racial profiling is an act of discrimination committed by law enforcement officials in
which they target certain individuals with the suspicion of a crime due to their race, religion, and
culture. In racial profiling, individuals are suspected of committing a crime solely because of their
appearance, which is associated to stereotypes of their people committing crimes. I believe this is a
huge problem in Chicago because many minorities in Chicago especially those in underdeveloped
neighborhoods are affected by this. Not only is racial profiling unlawful, it goes against what our
nations constitution is supposed to protect us from. The amendments are there to protect us. Racial
profiling violates our 4th amendment right, which protects us from unreasonable searches and
seizures. I?d say that being harassed and making the assumption that someone has committed a
wrongdoing based on their physical features and background would fall under being a very
unreasonable act. My goal with this paper is to shed some light on a view from the past on how racial
profiling became an issue and how it is still an issue around the country including Chicago. This paper
will also include what I believe to be solutions to this growing issue.
Historical Perspective How long ago did racial profiling come to be? Many believe that the concept of
racial profiling

Creationism in Public School Science Class Essay
Should history teachers teach that the Holocaust happened and that it didn t
happen? If not, then why should science teachers teach that life evolved over billions of
years, and that it was created as it is now just six thousand years ago? Creationism should
not be taught in science class because it has no supporting evidence, it is not equal to
evolution, and religious myths can not be taught in public schools in an officially non
religious nation.

upon as evil by the born again Christian community, and they are saying that evolution is
evil too. Ham also makes the argument that public schools are now anti Christian and
even atheistic. The creationists argue that creationism is scientific fact, evolution isn t,
evolution is evil, and that public schools are anti Christian.
There are many things wrong with Ken Ham s argument, but one thing is true,
however he is wrong to think it is a bad thing. Public schools are anti Christian. It is good
that they are, because it is extremely important that they be anti Christian, Muslim,
Jewish, Hindu, Pagan, etc. Public schools are government institutions. According to the
Constitution, the government will not establish a religion, nor will it be biased towards
any one religion. Why should schools teach the Judeo Christian Islamic myth of creation,
and not the Hindu myth, or the Pagan myth, or any other religion s story of a so called
beginning to everything, and its advancement?
Creationists also often argue that evolution is just a theory. This is true, but so is
sexual reproduction, gravity, humans need water to survive, and all other scientific facts
based on evidence (also called theories). Theory has two different meanings. One is the
scientific one, the one that means fact based on

Synthesis Tom Regan, Carl Cohen, Peter Singer Animal rights are one of the most controversial issues
today. There has been endless debate about whether or not animals have rights. Philosophers attempt
to come up with the moral conclusions by taking in account the many different standpoints and
presenting their related arguments. In his essay The case of animal rights , Tom Regan, a professor of
philosophy at North Carolina State University, defends his view that the center of our moral concern
should not bring the suffering on animal as well as treating animals in a certain way. In other words,
we should treat animals as if they are our property. We should only use them to benefit us and hurting
them is an action that is not morally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He thinks we must at least treat animals humanely, but this does not mean we need to treat them as if
they have rights. He also compared the differences between animals with brain damaged persons,
senile or young in terms of the ability to make claim which is essential to being a person. That s why
these people are still part of our moral community, but animals are not. Moreover, he strongly supports

Metaphors In The Poem Hope
What is hope? I think hope is a feeling of wanting something to happen. According to Lisel Mueller,
written in 1976, her poem Hope is about how hope could be found everywhere and is part of
everything, even in the roughest situations. I think the theme of this poem is that hope is present, even
if it is extremely hard to find. Mueller uses many metaphors to describe hope as if it were something
else. Mueller uses metaphors to help show where hope could be found and broaden its understanding.
She presents metaphors on how hope is hiding, is in nature, and is found somewhere else. The first
three lines of the poem is a great way to describe hope. It hovers in dark corner/ before the lights are
turned on, this shows that hope is hiding and isn t seen. I think that this means hope is hard to find. For
example, many individuals have something terrible happen and have zero hope in anything getting
better. They will also feel like life will always be hard, and something bad will always happen no
matter the situation, I know this from personal experiences. Not only does Mueller use metaphors to
show how it s hiding, she uses it in nature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

those who don t. Another example Mueller gives is, It sprouts in each occluded eye/ of many eyed

but for others it would probably be the world. Nature may be a sign of hope but Mueller also use hope

Archetypes In True Grit
True Grit, by Charles Portis, is a fantastic story where the main character, Mattie Ross, seeks revenge
for her father s death. One of the key character archetypes that is important to know about Mattie is
her general attitude towards anything that may cross her path: unfazed and generally not bothered. The
best example of this is how she describes the death of her father in the first chapter. Usually when it
comes to children in adventure novels, the death of a parent or guardian serves as a tragic backstory
for the character and changes their life for the worse (e.g. Harry Potter, the Baudelaire children, and
Katniss Everdeen). All of these children faced some kind of grief following the death of their
respective parent, but the only description we receive from Mattie concerning her father s murder is
Tom Chaney raised his rifle and shot him in the forehead, killing him instantly (16). This bleak and
straight to the point attitude that Mattie characterizes serves as a basis for her philosophy of justice.
Mattie does not beat around the bush when it comes to justice. She has a fixed view on how law
should be carried out against Tom Chaney and stops at nothing to achieve this. Put simply, Mattie
wants him dead, and she wants him to know that he is dying as a result of him killing her father. This
view and interpretation of justice closely resembles the eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth philosophy of
the Code of Hammurabi where the life of Tom Chaney must be payed for

Sartre s Views On The Moral Choices
Jean Paul Sartre is a French philosopher who makes his claims based on a combination of two
philosophical traditions existentialism and phenomenology. Sartre himself is an atheistic existentialist.
He summarizes his claims regarding existentialism with three words anguish, abandonment, and
despair (25). In this paper, I will talk about Sartre s definition of existentialism, its relation to essence,
Sartre s views on the moral choices and how they relate to art.
Sartre makes the claim that all humans start at the same place. He says we are all thrown into the
world without any preset values/moral attitudes. We come into this world as a clean slate (tabula rasa)
(22). Although we did not come into this world by choice, the one thing we do come with is the
freedom to decide who we want to be and how we want to live our lives. In this sense, even prisoners
are free. Being physically captured doesn t mean being physically captured. You are free to determine
what your physical imprisonment means when you have the freedom to decide what any circumstance
means.
Sartre emphasizes the mantra of existentialism. His slogan is existence precedes essence . Essence is
what makes something what it is. According to Descartes, our essence is our rational mind it makes us
who we are. Sartre argues humans aren t born with an essence they don t start with one. Humans start
by simply existing. At the beginning, there is no internal essence or human nature. Our essence is later
defined by

Outsourcing Public Policy Essay
This week we are discussing public policy issues faced in the world today. Our reading for this week
defines public policy as a goal oriented course of action that the government follows in dealing with a
problem or issue in the country (ushistory.gov). Many policies are created based on the needs of the
American people. Although policies are created with the best interest of Americans in mind sometimes
the policy might not work out as well as initially intended. One such policy that I feel has the potential
to have a negative effect is outsourcing.
Outsourcing is simply obtaining goods or services from an outside supplier in place of an inside
source. A great example of this is how our medical center has to outsource patients to other facilities
for procedures that we are not equipped to handle. This type of outsourcing is positive because the
patient gets the best care available, the base establishes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

my opinion this country was built on the backs of coal miners and factory workers but today we ve
outsourced almost everything drastically decreasing the job market and making it difficult for fellow
Americans to find employment. Other than the outsourcing of jobs abroad America has also hurt itself
with outsourcing in the federal government. The rise of the government s do more with less mentality
is stretched the military and other government offices very thin. To combat the decline in manning the
military has outsourced many jobs to civilian contract agencies. For each contactor hired the military

Essay On Man Made And Natural Disaster
Man made and natural disasters are incidents that occur within our society. Research has indicated
these incidents have become more common internationally over the past several decades (Pan
American Health Organization, 2004). As a result, it is integral domestically to plan for, work to
prevent, and respond to incidents within our borders. These incidents have been shown to be
increasing in commonality due to increased levels and technology associated with transportation,
higher concentrations of humans in smaller areas, growth of chemical industries that increase
availability of explosive and/or toxic agents, and increased terrorist activity and armed conflicts (Pan
American Health Organization, 2004). In response to these increasing risks of man made and natural
disasters occurring within our borders, it is integral for our society to utilize an emergency
management system in order to prepare for, mitigate, and respond to these incidents. The Incident
Command System (ICS), which allows for coordination on every governmental level and among a
multitude of agencies, facilitates efficient communication between entities, and ensures a continuity of
command through a highly organized chain of command (Phoenix Police Department). ICS is
currently the main and most efficient and effective system throughout governmental and non
governmental agencies and entities within our borders. In response to the terror attacks at the turn of
the century and continuing threat of terror

Blaise Pascal Fideism
In questioning the existence of God, the ideology of fideism is used to in support the existence of God
with the use of faith. Opposed to other various views, fideism relies on the use of faith and/or
revelation rather than depending single handedly on reason alone. Blaise Pascal is a French
philosopher that approaches the doctrine and beliefs of fideism using his wager argument to confirm
the concept that there is a monotheistic God in existence (269).
Pascal s ideology revolves around the wins and loses of betting. He states that if we do believe in a
God than our chances at happiness are achievable. He adds on saying, under the circumstance that we
do believe in a God, but He does not exist, then there is no much to lose in the end. Although, if we do
not believe that a god exists then they is all the much more to lose and happiness is not achievable.
This essentially means that believing in a God is better than not believing in God at all.
Going into further detail, Pascal begins his argument by explaining that If there is a God, he is
infinitely beyond our comprehension, since having neither parts nor limits, he bears no relation to
ourselves (323). This brings up the question of whether or not humans are able to decide if God is real.
He states that we are stuck between two decisions, two choices, or two infinities. These decisions of
infinities being God existing or God not existing. Pascal mentions that reason alone cannot help us
gravitate towards one decision

like she was going to the party. The last example is when Senora Ines was handing out party favors
she didn t give rosaura one. Rosaura was the only person at the party who didn t get the gift instead
she got money. That was symbolic for her being lesser than all of the other rich kids at the party. That
was more evidence of why symbolism is the main author s craft in The Stolen Party. The most
relevant author s craft in The Stolen Party By Liliana Heker is symbolism. In paragraph two it gave
two examples of symbolism using Rosaura being different that all the other kids. In paragraph three a
counter claim of a different author craft was provided to help further the opinion of the reader. In
paragraph four, two more examples of symbolism with the subject of being singled out. Throughout
the writing an argument of the main author s craft was provided to help choose that symbolism is the

Ebola Research Paper
Global Health Crisis of the Century? Rapidly sweeping across the continent of West Africa, the deadly
Ebola virus is devastating African populations and raising the levels of paranoia within first world
countries. With the world displaying very little resistance to the virus, it appears that the hope to
contain the outbreak is waning with each passing day. This is by no means the second coming of the
plague, but the Ebola virus does have the biological potential to significantly damage the populations
of poor countries, not to mention it can drastically affect the economies and travel patterns of first
world countries and their populations. The real question thus becomes, how has the recent Ebola
outbreak impacted world travel as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Travel restrictions have been placed, parents are keeping their kids home from school, and people are
essentially quarantining themselves amidst the panic. Even recently here at UGA, an event featuring a
guest speaker travelling from Liberia to Athens was recently cancelled by the University for
precautionary measures. Granted, cancelling the trip was indeed justified considering the speaker is
from Liberia, the country facing the brunt of the Ebola virus effects. Regardless, justified or not, sheer
pandemonium has set in, and it looks like it is here for the long haul. The misinformation being
presented on Ebola has, as a result, created a sort of ripple effect across the United States and Europe.
Ebola screenings, for example, are now being performed at airport security checkpoints. A tactic such
as this is a simple knee jerk reaction to the recent news. The screenings themselves have recently been
criticized for being widely ineffective and useless. Researchers recently presented data that claimed
that Airport screening would still let 93% of people with Ebola slip through the cracks, because only a
handful of those sick with the virus would have symptoms when they arrive at the airport (Brodwin).
In short, Ebola screenings taking place at airports are simply gumming up travel and proving to be
doing more harm than

Stare Decisis Precedent
Stare decisis and precedent are related because they both involve judges to use past decision in order
to make decision on more current decisions. When judges use precedent they look back on old court
decision on similar cases and then rule the same. When using stare decisis the judges will look back
on prior ruling and adjust their rulings for more modern day use for a more equal fairness under the
law. Both Stare decisis and precedents are important because with them the need for reviewing ever
case has lessened. Another reason is that it proves a more balanced and limits any unfairness in
punishment. However, just because they do promote fairness it doesn t mean that judges should only
be limited to past decisions. Over time new crime develop

What Is Wendy Kop s Senior Thesis
More than 16 million children grow up in poverty. One in three of those kids will not graduate high
school. From the kids who do graduate 18% won t be able to attend four years of college. Knowing
those statistics and how they affected children all around the U.S. Wendy Kopp wanted to change
those statistics. Wendy Kopp was born in Austin, Texas on June 29th, 1867. Wendy Kopp believed
that it was the responsibility of everyone to stop children from being uneducated. As Wendy grew up
she felt that since she was a woman there would be limits but as the years passed by she learned she
wasn t limited. She attended Princeton as a public policy major and was involved in many activities.
She met a variety of people during her college years and learned more about students who come from
poor communities and found that they have lower academic achievement because they were less
prepared for the challenges ahead.
Wendy eventually used this same idea in her senior thesis. So, for her senior thesis she proposed that
they should assign graduates from the nation s top universities to teach in disadvantaged communities.
Wendy used her senior thesis to move to an office space in New York and gather teacher corps.
Gathering enough support, Wendy eventually grew her organization and called it Teach For America.

The World s Fair At The Columbian Exposition
Classical architecture, ferris wheels, 1500 pound chocolate bars. These new, unheard of attractions at
the Columbian Exposition attracted millions of unsuspecting, innocent guests to the preying ground of
the narcissistic Dr. H. H. Holmes. Chicago, Illinois, the host of the 1983 World s Fair, was home to
this sadistic serial killer who attracted his prey using his education and occupation as a means to gain
trust from new, unsuspecting travelers from the 46 nations who participated in the exposition. For
three years, Chicago prepared for the exposition, building new architecture and creating new
inventions to celebrate the 400 year anniversary of Columbus s discovery of America; the doctor had
the same idea, and so he built his own Castle with strange, personal gadgets attached. The presence of
the Columbian Exposition in Chicago gave Dr. Holmes a means to cunningly lure victims into his
death chamber of a home. holmes background
Dr. Holmes was an infamous con artist and serial killer. Born as Herman Mudgett, Dr. Holmes,
experimented on pets and other common forest animals. He tortured these animals, dissecting them
while they were still alive, practicing and increasing his knowledge on how long a living animal could
survive with the excruciating pain deriving from Henry s torture. As an adult, Henry documented in
his autobiography that while visiting his doctor as a child, older boys would shove human display

Theme Of Manipulation In Othello
Manipulation is the controlling by artful, unfair, or insidious means especially to one s own advantage.
In the play Othello by William Shakespeare, Iago uses manipulation to procure what he wants. The
story of Othello is about a man named Othello, who married a the virtuous Desdemona. Othello and
Desdemona are madly in love and have already overcame many obstacles to be together, much to the
dismay of Roderigo. A man who longed for Desdemona, and consistently chased after her. He was
overlooked for a high position in the army and had heard rumors that Othello has slept with his wife
Emilia. For these crimes, man named Iago is out to destroy Othello s life. Iago deceives many people
and through his subtle actions, kills Othello and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be sure that Othello would be the one charged with murder when the time came about, he told
othello to strangle her rather than poison her. With her strangled in her own bed, the killer would be
obvious to discern, unlike poisoning her, which would be more difficult to prove. Iago knew othello
would jump at this idea as well. He knew that this act was one of revenge and the best way to get said
revenge was to kill her where she had betrayed him.
Iago manipulates Roderigo. Othello has told Iago to murder Cassio. Iago then turns to Roderigo to do
his dirty work. He says to Roderigo, If you will watch his going thence, which I will fashion to fall out
between twelve and one, you may take him at your pleasure: I will be near to second your attempt, and
he shall fall between us. Come, stand not amazed at it, but go along with me; I will show you such a
necessity in his death that you shall think yourself bound to put it on him (4. 2. 235 242). Iago was
more than well informed by roderigo himself about how much he was willing to sacrifice for
Desdemona. He even has mentioned killing himself over her. Iago uses this to his advantage when he
implies that to be with Desdemona, Roderigo has to kill Cassio. Additionally, if Cassio is killed it will
only prove himself more veritable in othello s eyes, which is exactly what he needs at all times to
ensure that his plot will go through.
At the very end of it all, Iago was a master

National Parks Overcrowding
In 2016, according to a National Public Radio report, national parks had a record of 305 million
people who had visited them. (Siegler). This number will continue to grow as years go by creating the
national parks to be more overcrowded. It has become a controversial issue whether to put a limit of
how many people can enter or not into the National Parks. But if the National Park Service doesn t put
a limit on how many people can be in these parks, there may not be parks preserved for future
generations.
As overcrowding is becoming an issue in national parks, we need to take in consideration how traffic
and air pollution is playing a role as well. According to the National Public Radio, they said that the

In the Yale Environment 360 it mentions, ...a growing number of visitors are walking off boardwalks,
making their own trails, throwing stuff into hot springs, or driving off roads and trampling fragile

because they aren t walking on the boardwalks. There has to be a limit on how many people are
allowed into the park. If the NPS keeps allowing a vast number of people to come in, there will be
nothing left because the people are destroying the natural resources. However, there are agencies
promoting National Parks so people can go and visit their national parks in their states. For example,
the Utah Office of Tourism is advertising for people to go and visit the Mighty Five parks, which
consists of: Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, and Capitol Reef. As they are advertising these five
parks, it creates for people to make these bucket lists to go. It helps people get in tune with their
surroundings around them. However, due to promoting these national parks it has created these spaces
to be overcrowded. (making it so they need to be aware of the

The Age Of Innocence By Edith Wharton And The Waste Land
The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot has similar recurring
imagery. Both literary works portray two women in a way and compare these two women characters.
Wharton s portrayal of gender in the society of Old New York illustrates the perfect woman through
May Welland along with the imperfect woman through Ellen Olenska, whereas in the poem The Waste
Land by T.S. Eliot, the role and sexuality of women is shown through the juxtaposition of two women
in the section A Game of Chess.
In The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton portrays gender through the juxtaposition of Ellen and May.
May is the type of woman who personifies innocence. She always keeps up with her appearance and
personality even when she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Newland fears that May wont be able to see any of the world even if she opens her eyes. Just like the
cavefish isn t able to see after living in darkness for years, May might not be able to see after living in
the shadow of society. Newland is attempting to draw May away from her innocent personality and
open her eyes to the world. He fears that May will end up like a copy of her mother, who perfectly
portrays the role of a wife in society. Newland wants more out of May, not just the perfect housewife.
Ellen Olenska portrays the other side of the juxtaposition of women in The Age of Innocence. She is
more individualistic than May and her experiences outside of the United States such as her failed
marriage in Europe show that Ellen is a woman who is independent. For this reason, Ellen fails to
grasp the social code once she enters the society of Old New York. A great example comes at the
beginning of the novel when Ellen enters the opera in clothing that is provocative for the event. When
Ellen enters the opera in this European style dress that reveals too much shoulder, she shocks Old New
York. The suggestion of this headdress, which gave her what was then called a Josephine look, was
carried out in the cut of the dark blue velvet gown rather theatrically caught up under her bosom by a
girdle with a large old fashioned clasp. The wearer of this unusual dress, who seemed quite
unconscious of the attention it was attracting [...] (6, Wharton). The

Tungsten
Title of Your Report
Tungsten, also known as wolfram, is a chemical element with symbol W and atomic number 74. The
word tungsten comes from the Swedish language tung sten, which directly translates to heavy stone.
Its name in Swedish is volfram, however, in order to distinguish it from scheelite, which in Swedish is
alternatively named tungsten.
A hard, rare metal under standard conditions when uncombined, tungsten is found naturally on Earth
only in chemical compounds. It was identified as a new element in 1781, and first isolated as a metal
in 1783. Its important ores include wolframite and scheelite. The free element is remarkable for its

and a much lower superconducting transition temperature TC relative to the β phase: ca. 0.015 K vs. 1
4 K; mixing the two phases allows obtaining intermediate TC values. The TC value can also be raised
by alloying tungsten with another metal . Such tungsten alloys are sometimes used in low temperature
superconducting circuits.
Isotopes
Naturally occurring tungsten consists of five isotopes whose half lives are so long that they can be
considered stable. Theoretically, all five can decay into isotopes of element 72 by alpha emission, but
only 180W has been observed to do so with a half life of ×1018 years; on average, this yields about
two alpha decays of 180W in one gram of natural tungsten per year. The other naturally occurring
isotopes have not been observed to decay, constraining their half lives to be:
Another 30 artificial radioisotopes of tungsten have been characterized, the most stable of which are
181W with a half life of 121.2 days, 185W with a half life of 75.1 days, 188W with a half life of 69.4
days, 178W with a half life of 21.6 days, and 187W with a half life of 23.72 h. Tungsten typically
combines with oxygen to form the yellow tungstic oxide, WO3, which dissolves in aqueous alkaline
solutions to form tungstate ions,

Dutch Slave Trade Essay
Dutch Slave Trade
During the 17th and 18th centuries, mercantilism was the emerging economic policy through which
the slave trade developed in Europe. In the Netherlands many historical events gave rise to a desire for
domination of international trade. They were serious tradesman and were heavily involved in the
profitable business of slavery. The Dutch, intelligent and self ruling tradesmen took no time in
displaying their dominance over rival countries, Portugal, England and Spain, in the Atlantic and
Indian Ocean. They established their international superiority in trade and impacted today s society.

However, this in turn led to the entrance into international trade. This will begin a long struggle for
trading power with the Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French.
The Dutch didn t take long to make their presence felt. The quote from the book The Slaves describes
their attitude coming into the trade, The Dutch, fiercely independent, and aggressive traders...did not
take long to establish themselves internationally. The Dutch were determined to control the trading
power in West Africa. By mid 16th century, the Dutch had set up posts along the West African coast,
and forts in present day Indonesia. The Dutch also controlled most of the Eastern Sea and had set up
forts along the Caribbean and the coast of Dutch Guiana. The Dutch were very bright when it came to
technological advances. One example of their knowledge was the invention of the canal and irrigation
tactics. The Dutch intelligence in trade soon overcame the Portuguese in Africa. First off, the Dutch
armed their boats and also trained the sailors. This system will prevent rivals and enemies to sink their
ships or purge their cargo from the ship. The Dutch also raided particular forts, which gave them good
geographic points on the map, and limited the power of their rivals. These forts were ports for trading
routes, where ships may need supplies, and were also loading areas for

  • 2. The Tragedy Of Theseus, The King Of Herakles The Athenian hero Theseus served as a model of Athenian civic duty and shaped his audience s conception of right and wrong behavior. Theseus, king of Athens, was believed to be a great hero and served as the Athenian counterpart of Herakles. Primarily, Theseus was a source of Athenian pride and civic duty. Solely on his journey from Troezen to Athens, Theseus goes through six labors in which he defeats six monster and human adversaries that had plagued Greece while giving them a taste of their own medicine. He defeated Periphetes, who used his club to beat passersby to death, by using his own club to bludgeon him to death. He defeated Sinis the robber and used his cruel murder method against him, tying Sinis between two trees that were bent down to the ground, and then letting the trees go, tearing him apart. This trend continued through the killing of the Crommyonian pig, Sciron the robber, King Cercyon the wrestler, and procrustes the stretcher. Time and again, Theseus risked his life to rid the world of evil and make greece a safer place. Theseus clearly had a very strong sense of justice, he refused to stand by and allow monsters, human or otherwise, to roam the country unchecked. His strong sense of justice compelled him to punish these evildoers in a manner replicating their own crimes. In his labors, and his defeat of the Minotaur, Theseus also shows the distinction between the uncivilized monsters, that had previously roamed Greece, and what Athens would become under ... • 4. Primary Lymphedema Paper Primary lymphedema occurs due to an intrinsic, most of the time genetic, aberration in the lymphatic vasculature. Over the past decade, some of the key genetic factors leading to primary lymphedema have been elucidated. In 2013, Connel and his colleagues created a clinical algorithm for the diagnosis of primary lymphatic dysplasia [Figure 3.0].23 The figure demonstrates nine causal mutations linked to primary lymphedema and we will briefly discuss some of these. 3.1 Milroy Disease Milroy disease is a form of primary lymphedema, which presents with progressive swelling of the face and lower extremities.24 It is characterized by the absence or marked diminution of lymphatic vessels.25 Some cases have been associated with missense mutations in vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 receptor tyrosine kinase (VEGFR3).26 The underlying pathology for this disease is not the mere absence of initial lymphatic capillaries but the inadequacy of initial lymphatic fluid absorption.3 3.2. Hennekam Syndrome Hennekam syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, is characterized by lymphangiectasia along with mental retardation.27 Limb and facial edema may be apparent at ... Occurrence of lymphedema and distichiasis at puberty comprise the clinical diagnostic criteria.31 In LDS, germline mutations in forkhead transcription factor C2 (FOXC2) gene mutations have been implicated.31 This gene is integral in the development of lymphatic vasculature.32 In patients with FOXC2 mutation, 100% will have superficial vein incompetence while a third will have deep vein incompetence.33 The resulting venous stasis explains the edema. In a very recent study, even mutations FOXC1 were noted to cause abnormal lymphatic vessel morphogenesis.34 This discovery recognizes both FOXC1 and FOXC2 as fundamental controllers of lymphangiogenesis and demonstrates another potential target for the management of ... • 5. Central Dewitt Football Program Analysis The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will, and a lack to change Vince Lombardi. Central Dewitt s football program usually has a tradition of great success and excellent morals. Unfortunately, in the 2014 and 2015 football season they have a combined record of 5 13, which does not live up to the standards of the DeWitt community. There are many problems circulating the football program, but most involve the lack of experience in coaching. Central Dewitt s losing football record for the past two seasons can be solved by coaches properly developing their athletes, incorporating new offensive and defensive strategies, and increasing player participation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Including, beating their arch rivals the Maquoketa Cardinal 47 of the 83 times playing them (CDSfootball). The Sabers currently run an offense called the triple option. In this more dynamic and elaborate offense, they leave opponents unblocked making them choose to tackle the quarterback or the fullback. If they tackle the fullback, the quarterback then has the option to keep it himself or pitch it to the running back thus giving us the triple option. Head coach Mike Miller brought the offense to Central Dewitt in 2012 during his debut season. The sabers saw great success in Miller s first season going 8 4, winning the district six title and rushing for 3,644 yards (CDSfootball). It did not take long for opposing coaches to find ways to counter this run dominant offense. In coach Millers previous two seasons the sabers have only run for a combined total 3,700 yards (CDSfootball). This is not the only problem that lies within Central Sabers schemes. The Sabers run a base 4 3 defense, which means there are 4 down lineman and 3 linebackers. Although this is a popular defense, in modern football you need to run multiple defenses to throw off opposing offenses. The sabers do not run multiple defenses, and this allows offenses to get in a rhythm, and as a result the sabers allowed an average of 36 points a game in 2015 (quicksstats). The need for change is evident in the Central Sabers program. The real question is how to change the schemes, so the Sabers can get back on their winning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Cab Rank Rule Research Essay Introduction Australia has taken from English Law in adopting the cab rank rule, encoded in The Victorian Bar Incorporated Practice Rules 2009 (Vic). This essay will discuss the application of the rule, the strengths and weaknesses and will conclude to discuss why the rule should remain an integral part of the Bar despite many calls for its abolition. What is the cab rank principle ? The cab rank rule states that a lawyer practicing solely as a barrister must accept a brief in a field they profess to practice. Barristers are professionally bound by this duty if the brief is in the barrister s capacity, skill and expertise; the barrister is available to appear and is not committed to other engagements which may inhibit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second rationale behind the cab rank rule is that is protects barristers from adverse consequences that could arise from accepting a contentious brief. A barrister may be subjected to public scrutiny or criticism from those who believe the barrister is sympathizing with a repugnant criminal. Yet, with the existence of the cab rank rule, the obligation to accept the brief provides the barrister with a justification. In theory, this is an essential strength of the cab rank rule, however, in practice in may be redundant. This rationale is on the premise that the layperson is aware of the cab rank rule, a proposition that is far from the truth. In 2010, Brian Walters, a QC, was running for the Greens and his Labor opponent attacked him for once taking a brief for a brown coal company. The fact that a politician is not aware of the cab rank rule suggests that members of the general public would also be unaware of the rule, thereby denying barristers the protection the rule purports to give. Lastly, a barrister must refuse to accept a brief if they would be placed in a conflict of interest or would otherwise be detrimental to the administration of justice. However, the barrister holding strong moral views inconsistent with the subject matter is not reasonable ground to refuse a brief. If the client still wishes to proceed despite the barrister s ... • 10. Muhammad Ali Is NOT a Hero Essay Muhammad Ali Is NOT a Hero To be a hero, someone could save others, respect their country, and care. The firefighters from the Fire Department of New York have all of these characteristics, even thought they aren t perfect. Everyday, they risk their lives to save others. They show their patriotism even on the trucks they drive through the cities. Most of all they don t just do it because it s their job; they do it because they care. Unlike the people at FDNY, Muhammad Ali is violent, separatist, and rude. The first reason Muhammad Ali isn t a hero is because he is violent. The second reason Muhammad Ali isn t a hero is he was a separatist who did not respect his country. He became part of the Nation of Islam. They believed Blacks should break off from other Americans. Also, in April 1967, Ali refused induction into the U.S. Army, claiming exempt status as a Muslim minister (Abeles). When asked why he dodged the draft, Ali replied, I ain t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong, no Viet Cong ever called me n (Biography.com). Because his separatist beliefs and actions, Muhammad Ali did not show respect for his country. The third reason Muhammad Ali isn t a hero is because he is rude. He would always taunt his opponents. Before one of his matches, he taunted Liston calling him the bear and verbally defused the famous stare as being just plain ugly (Myers 46). When Ali fought George Foreman in Zaire, he had the Africans chant Ali bumbaye which means Ali kill him (When). Some sportswriters were against Ali for this reason. Only a rude man like Muhammad Ali would do and say these things. Because of his violence, rudeness, and separatist beliefs, Muhammad Ali in no way compares to the men at the Fire Department of New York. While they have saved lives, Muhammad Ali has just beaten people up. Spiderman is another example of a hero; he saved lives, respected his country, and cared for the people he was saving. • 11. Can the Subaltern Speak Summary Can the Subaltern Speak? Summary Gayatri Spivak Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is an unsettling voice in literary theory and especially, postcolonial studies. She has describes herself as a practical deconstructionist feminist Marxist and as a gadfly . She uses deconstruction to examine how truth is constructed and to deploy the assertions of one intellectual and political position (such as Marxism) to interrupt or bring into crisis another (feminism, for example). In her work, she combines passionate denunciations of the harm done to women, non Europeans, and the poor by the privileged West with a persistent questioning of the grounds on which radical critique takes its stand. Her continual interrogation of assumptions can make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As poststructuralism would have it, human consciousness is constructed discursively. Our subjectivity is constructed by the shifting discourses of power which endlessly speak through us, situating us here and there in particular positions and relations. In these terms we are not the authors of ourselves. We do not construct our identities, we have it written for us; the subject cannot be sovereign over the construction of selfhood. Instead the subject is decentered, in that its consciousness is always being constructed from positions outside of itself. It follows then that the individual is not a transparent representation of the self but an effect of discourse. Spivak argues that surprisingly for these figures, when Foucault and Deleuze talks about oppressed groups such as the working classes they fall back into precisely these uncritical notions of sovereign subjects by restoring to them a fully centred consciousness. In addition they also assume that the writing of intellectuals such as themselves can serve as a transparent medium through which the voices of the oppressed can be represented. The intellectual is cast as a reliable mediator for the voices of the oppressed, a mothpiece through which the oppressed can clearly speak. Spivak articulates her reasons for her worries in the first part of the essay, applying MICHEL FOUCAULT s understanding of epistemic violence to the remotely orchestrated, far flung, and heterogeneous project to ... Oates describes a sad and tragic story about a man named Nat Turner who was born into slavery and his fight to be free. Ironically, his willingness to do anything, even kill, to gain his freedom leads to his own demise. From the title of this book, The Fires of Jubilee, ; a reader can truly grasp the concept that there is trouble, chaos, and mayhem brewing in the month of August. With this newly acquired knowledge, he began preaching the Old Testament to the other slaves, about what freedom meant and how they should fight for it. He mainly preached to a group of five other slaves, with the addition of two more later on about the concept of freedom. Nat felt as if he was driven into some corner of slavery from which there was no return, only his imagination was he free. He had a burning rage to fight against the Serpent, and slay the enemy with their own weapon. During their March of Destruction, ; things began to get out of hand. Though he was willing to go to extreme measures to gain his freedom, the events that ended up taking place ended up becoming a massacre. Due to Nat s rebellion, 60 whites and 200 blacks died. Though Nat did in fact partake in the killings, the author makes it out to seem as if in the end, Nat did not really want this to become a bloodbath. Although he thought that it was getting out of hand, he stood idly by, watching the massacre take place. In the end, a total of 50 stood trial, and 21, including Nat Turner were hung for the rebellion. After the rebellion and the death of Nat Turner, Garrison and Knapp, whom believed that Negroes had as much to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as whites enjoyed, published the Liberator ; in Boston, demanding that slaves be emancipated and freed. One parent is Garveyism, an ideology which at its essence is a Black supremacist socio political movement with the end goal of repatriating African descendants in the diaspora back to Africa and and Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is one of the five monophysite churches, characterised by their rejection of the Council of Chalcedon 451 AD(Ethiopian) This council was convened in an effort to create uniformity in regards to doctrine amongst varying christian sects. One of the many decisions agreed upon was that God had two distinct natures in Christ. Ethiopian orthodox christianity vehemently disagreed with the council and instead decided that Christ s humanity cannot be separated from his divinity.(Encyclopedia britannica) The Ethiopian church was for most of its existence placed under the jurisdiction of the Coptic Church of Egypt. In 1959 the Ethiopian church became independent from Egypt when an Ethiopian patriarch was elected (Ethiopian) It most be noted that although the Ethiopian Orthodox church and associated teachings are accepted by the Rastafarian community all other christian denominations are rejected. They hold the belief that all other religious institutions, buildings, churches and schools, including Jamaican Pentecostal revivalism although indigenous, are created with the sole intent of keeping black people down. The Biblical Reverse Of Ephesians The Biblical verse of Ephesians 4:25 states, Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor for we are members of one another. (Maxwell and Elmore, 2007, p. 1465) 1. What does that mean to you in the context of your organization? Within the context of my organization, the Biblical verse of Ephesians 4:25 means to me is that there is a big difference between telling truth and telling lies, especially since I work part time for my family based cleaning business. For the most part, it is easier said than done that family members who are part of family businesses can separate family from business. Since I have been part of my family based cleaning business since I was a child, I learned quite early that separating family from business maybe difficult, but possible. As a result, I learned at an early age that because I have family members that are employees as well, does not mean that I can get away with lying and speak untruthfully to them. If I choose not to lie and speak truthfully to non family employees at an organization, why would I choose to lie and speak untruthfully to employees that are my family? Therefore, regardless if I am working at my family business or not working with my family business, it is overwhelmingly better to not tell lies and speak truthfully with my words. 2. ... War has expanded into a new electronic frontier, where the soldiers are hackers and the targets are anything with wires. To understand this new kind of war, we must analyze what it is, who has this power, and how they can use it. Cyberwarfare has the potential to do to global politics what nuclear warfare did half a century ago. To begin with, it is essential to understand what cyberwar is. Cyber essentially refers to anything electronic or internet based. A cyber attack is when one entity hacks into the resources of another entity. This resource could be almost anything an email inbox, a bank account, a stoplight, a factory, a power grid, or even a nuclear device. Cyberwarfare is to cyber attacks as nuclear war is to nuclear missiles; an exchange between two nations in an attempt for one to damage another. Cyber attacks come in two main forms: espionage and sabotage. In an espionage operation, the objective is to gain intelligence on strategic resources. For example, imagine a country hacking into a communication network to survey enemy troop movements or electronically stealing the blueprints for a missile. The other kind, sabotage, is much more direct. In this case, the objective is to either take control over or destroy an asset. In racial profiling, individuals are suspected of committing a crime solely because of their appearance, which is associated to stereotypes of their people committing crimes. I believe this is a huge problem in Chicago because many minorities in Chicago especially those in underdeveloped neighborhoods are affected by this. Not only is racial profiling unlawful, it goes against what our nations constitution is supposed to protect us from. The amendments are there to protect us. Racial profiling violates our 4th amendment right, which protects us from unreasonable searches and seizures. • 29. Metaphors In The Poem Hope What is hope? I think hope is a feeling of wanting something to happen. According to Lisel Mueller, written in 1976, her poem Hope is about how hope could be found everywhere and is part of everything, even in the roughest situations. I think the theme of this poem is that hope is present, even if it is extremely hard to find. Mueller uses many metaphors to describe hope as if it were something else. Mueller uses metaphors to help show where hope could be found and broaden its understanding. She presents metaphors on how hope is hiding, is in nature, and is found somewhere else. The first three lines of the poem is a great way to describe hope. It hovers in dark corner/ before the lights are turned on, this shows that hope is hiding and isn t seen. I think that this means hope is hard to find. For example, many individuals have something terrible happen and have zero hope in anything getting better. They will also feel like life will always be hard, and something bad will always happen no matter the situation, I know this from personal experiences. • 30. Archetypes In True Grit True Grit, by Charles Portis, is a fantastic story where the main character, Mattie Ross, seeks revenge for her father s death. One of the key character archetypes that is important to know about Mattie is her general attitude towards anything that may cross her path: unfazed and generally not bothered. The best example of this is how she describes the death of her father in the first chapter. Usually when it comes to children in adventure novels, the death of a parent or guardian serves as a tragic backstory for the character and changes their life for the worse (e.g. Harry Potter, the Baudelaire children, and Katniss Everdeen). All of these children faced some kind of grief following the death of their respective parent, but the only description we receive from Mattie concerning her father s murder is Tom Chaney raised his rifle and shot him in the forehead, killing him instantly (16). This bleak and straight to the point attitude that Mattie characterizes serves as a basis for her philosophy of justice. Mattie does not beat around the bush when it comes to justice. She has a fixed view on how law should be carried out against Tom Chaney and stops at nothing to achieve this. Put simply, Mattie wants him dead, and she wants him to know that he is dying as a result of him killing her father. This view and interpretation of justice closely resembles the eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth philosophy of the Code of Hammurabi where the life of Tom Chaney must be payed for ... • 31. Sartre s Views On The Moral Choices Jean Paul Sartre is a French philosopher who makes his claims based on a combination of two philosophical traditions existentialism and phenomenology. Sartre himself is an atheistic existentialist. He summarizes his claims regarding existentialism with three words anguish, abandonment, and despair (25). In this paper, I will talk about Sartre s definition of existentialism, its relation to essence, Sartre s views on the moral choices and how they relate to art. Sartre makes the claim that all humans start at the same place. He says we are all thrown into the world without any preset values/moral attitudes. We come into this world as a clean slate (tabula rasa) (22). Although we did not come into this world by choice, the one thing we do come with is the freedom to decide who we want to be and how we want to live our lives. In this sense, even prisoners are free. Being physically captured doesn t mean being physically captured. You are free to determine what your physical imprisonment means when you have the freedom to decide what any circumstance means. Sartre emphasizes the mantra of existentialism. His slogan is existence precedes essence . Essence is what makes something what it is. According to Descartes, our essence is our rational mind it makes us who we are. Sartre argues humans aren t born with an essence they don t start with one. Humans start by simply existing. Many policies are created based on the needs of the American people. Although policies are created with the best interest of Americans in mind sometimes the policy might not work out as well as initially intended. One such policy that I feel has the potential to have a negative effect is outsourcing. Outsourcing is simply obtaining goods or services from an outside supplier in place of an inside source. Research has indicated these incidents have become more common internationally over the past several decades (Pan American Health Organization, 2004). As a result, it is integral domestically to plan for, work to prevent, and respond to incidents within our borders. These incidents have been shown to be increasing in commonality due to increased levels and technology associated with transportation, higher concentrations of humans in smaller areas, growth of chemical industries that increase availability of explosive and/or toxic agents, and increased terrorist activity and armed conflicts (Pan American Health Organization, 2004). In response to these increasing risks of man made and natural disasters occurring within our borders, it is integral for our society to utilize an emergency management system in order to prepare for, mitigate, and respond to these incidents. Pascal s ideology revolves around the wins and loses of betting. He states that if we do believe in a God than our chances at happiness are achievable. He adds on saying, under the circumstance that we do believe in a God, but He does not exist, then there is no much to lose in the end. Although, if we do not believe that a god exists then they is all the much more to lose and happiness is not achievable. This essentially means that believing in a God is better than not believing in God at all. Going into further detail, Pascal begins his argument by explaining that If there is a God, he is infinitely beyond our comprehension, since having neither parts nor limits, he bears no relation to ourselves (323). This brings up the question of whether or not humans are able to decide if God is real. He states that we are stuck between two decisions, two choices, or two infinities. These decisions of infinities being God existing or God not existing. Pascal mentions that reason alone cannot help us gravitate towards one decision ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
