In the short story, The Conversion of the Jews, Philip Roth discusses the constant
oppressive behaviour that religious figures have, and the rebellious attitudes of the
youth. Rabbi Binder is a one sided person who is never open to the views of others.
He sees Ozzie Freedman, the questionable protagonist of the story, as his mission to
enforce religionand to never allow free thought. Philip Rothpoints out the hypocrisy
of religion in his short story, The Conversion of the Jews, where he shows
underlying themes that explain the extreme actions people use to prove their
religion never have any long lasting benefits or deep changes. Rabbi Binder
oppresses Ozzie by not allowing free thought on religion. He enforces his views by
making sure Ozzie cannot ask difficult questions in class, and possibly spread his

Bradford. Bradford starts the story out by telling readers a story about how God
gives good people good, and gives bad people bad. This is a theme that is shown

Mayflower. The boat was filled with people with all kinds of different beliefs.
While the passengers were traveling on the Mayflower, they faced many hardships.
One in particular was when the beam on the boat cracked. The Puritans believed if

beam, the Puritans believed this man was a gift from God. After a few days of

The competing style is used when people trying to achieve a goal or accomplish
something. It is used during arguments, such as when you are arguing against
somebody else to prove a point.
The avoiding style is used when a person shows little interest in the other party they
are communicating with. This is used when often when interacting with a person you
identify as an unimportant stranger, such as when you bump into a stranger in a
crowd and apologize.
The compromising style is used when a person cares about who they are interacting
with and care about their objectives / goals. An example of this would be scheduling
with a friend over when to meet up to do something since you care about their
opinion and are willing to try to compromise.
The accommodating stance is used when you care more about the other party s
goals more than your own (in many cases). An example of this would be if your
boss asked you to work overtime and even though you didn t want to you agreed to
do it.
The collaborating stance is used when both parties plan to accomplish their goals
fully (unlike compromising where the goals cannot be fully met) and to improve the

Shining Hope for Communities, also known as SHOFCO, has been successful in
combating a variety of issues present in slums through its grassroots foundation and
focus on female empowerment. SHOFCO originated in the Kibera slum of Nairobi,
Kenya, an area with many long standing problems in violence, poverty, and more.
Kiberais the largest urban slumin Kenya, and one of the largest in the entire world. Its
residents live in extreme povertywithout access to basic needs, and diseases such as
HIV/AIDS run rampant and take many lives. Rape is common, and there are very
few schools in Kibera resulting in a lack of education for boys and especially girls.
However, like many other impoverished communities, Kibera and its residents have
the potential to create a better future for themselves. Kennedy Odede, the founder
of SHOFCO, started with merely twenty cents and a soccer ball, but has since
advanced greatly and now has reached tens of thousands of people. Despite
enduring more in the first few years of his life than most privileged people will
experience in a lifetime, Odede believes that everyone has the potential to change
their own lives, which was instrumental in allowing him to rise up from his

Every November, Miracle Hill Ministries provides a Thanksgiving meal to their
various facilities including their shelters, drug rehabs, children s homes, and even

volunteer at the Great Possible Turkey Fry held at the Spartanburg Rescue Mission. I
chose this event as my practicum project because it was a great need at the
Administrative Offices. Because Miracle Hill Ministries is a non profit organization,
this event is fulfilled through the donations and the volunteerism of the South
