2. Programming Languages Over The Years Have Improved And
Programming languages over the years have improved and even changed drastically in their design
and capabilities. New languages are created to perform specific tasks that others cannot accomplish
each year. By doing so, the creation of these new languages fill specific niches. However, the problem
with computer languages is that if you want to construct an easier approach to a task or problem in
another language, odds are you must give something else up to accomplish that goal. Which is why
there is such a large amount of different and unique programming languages. Each of them has a
specific purpose of implementation, COBOL, for example, is the primary language of business.

Like many modern programming languages, Lua was inspired and influenced by other previous
languages. Among such influences are Scheme and Python (101 Ireusalimschy). However, Lua was
not simply created as one new language, but rather, as as the fusion of two descriptive languages,
designed for the configuration of two specific applications: one for scientific data entry, the other for
visualizing lithology profiles obtained from geological probes (SPE paper). SOL, a data description
language, was the first half of this fusion. What Lua inherited from SOL was its data description
support, but conversely integrated that support into procedural semantics (2 Ireusalimschy).
Furthermore, SOL s ability to name and nest declarations was passed onto Lua. Syntax between SOL
and Lua have minor differences but rather drastic differences in semantics (2 Ireusalimschy). And the
other half of this fusion? None other than DEL, a simple language designed to describe and declare
data entries in a simple way. To make the boring process of data entry easier, DEL turned each entity
into a data structure or record that additionally included its name in a graphical metafile. DEL s
original demand for an interactive data entry language was met, but quickly the team at TeCGraf was
met with more demands. Items on the wish list for DEL included Boolean variables for active/inactive
input, loops, and conditional controls. As DEL became heavier and heavier, the team decided they

3. Music Classification Essay
The one thing that clearly defines America is the music. The music of this generation is incredible.First
off you can listen to anything you want with no judgment, You can even make Devoted friends over
the music. You have Jazz music and Musicals, Pop and Rap, Hardcore and Deathcore music,Kpop and
Dubstep, you name it it s out there somewhere and you can listen to it.Therefore so many people go to
music types on an impulse.Consequently I listen to almost every kind of music, I like to have my
friends send me music they re into. I can learn more about that friend; the music someone listens to
really does say a lot about them. Therefore,I also extend my knowledge and love for different types of

The Silent Generation (people born in the 20s and 30s) had big band and swing. Baby Boomers (born
in the 40s and 50s) had rock and soul. Generation X (born in the 60s and 70s) had grunge and hip hop.
There s plenty of overlap, of course, and these are incredibly broad distinctions that don t take a lot of
other genres into consideration. But it s probably fair to say that these were the most defining
moments in music for each generation. This was taken from an article called The Sound of a
Generation. This clearly shows that music defines a generation, therefore also defines America.
Music is truly amazing, it really defines our social rankings and groups. For instance, people who dress
more grunge , tend to lean more towards rock and metal. While the theater kids lean more towards
Musicals and sometimes Jazz. People who listen to everything like me, we tend to not have a group
and flow gracefully between groups. The there are some people who don t fancy music in the least, they
tend to have a harder time making friends. Not only that but there is a song that we adopted to sing at

4. Freedman Research Paper
A freedman or freedwoman is a former slave who has been released from slavery, usually by legal
means. Historically, slaves were freed either by manumission (granted freedom by their owner) or
emancipation (granted freedom as part of a larger group). The life of a freedman changed in the years
1865 through 1896 in many different ways. Socially the amounts of segregation intensity increased
dramatically. Politically freedman could vote, there was what s known as The African American
Congress , and the 15th amendment was created. Economically sharecropping was growing in
popularity.
Segregation is separating a certain person from a larger group of people based on what they look like,
for instance an african american person vs a white person. Segregation was shown in many different
ways like, signs that would get put up by a drinking fountain with an arrow pointing one way for
whites and an arrow pointing another way for colored people. In 1896 the case Plessy v. Ferguson
brought a ton of attention to the law that basically said equal but separate . The Article Segregation
said, In 1896, the federal government sanctioned racial segregation, fashioning the constitutional
rationale for keeping the races legally apart. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The African American Congress was created when the first two african americans, were voted into
congress after the Reconstruction Era. Freedman could also vote, the voting rules and regulations were
pretty strict though. President Johnson used the fifteenth amendment to exercise the voting rights of
african american people, or as they were also known as freedmen. The fifteenth amendment states that
citizens should have the right to vote no matter race, color, or previous life styles. All of these different
things changed the life of a freedman because they were so opposite to what they were living like.

Autonomy Vs. Paternalism In Mental Health Treatment
The assignment for this Ethics class was to review Mr. Jacob s treatment, as described by the New
York State Commission on Quality of Care for the
Mentally disabled (1994). The class was further asked to comment on the major issues for each of the
three perspectives. The agencies, family and review board were to be included. This student will begin
with a fourth perspective; that of Mr. Gordon.
In the Matter of Jacob Gordon (1994), is the story of the last eight years of a psychiatrically disabled

safety was the most important issue for the family.
Secondarily to his safety, Mr. Gordon s family wished him to have the opportunity to participate in
programming that would assist in his wellness.
For Mr. Gordon s family, wellness seemed to equate to a standard of behavior that his mother
personally viewed as normal.
The family were not bound to any code of ethics or compelled to understand their biases or prejudices
in their son s case. Certainly, to say that the family operated on the premise of paternalism is an
understatement. Ethically, the Gordon s believed that they were the most justified to speak in the best

Indian Mascots vs Racial Discrimination Do you feel having Indian mascots for sports teams take part
in racial discrimination? In the sports world, representing a Native American is showing honor and

government recognizes the positive representation of Indians and has given them more rights than
state citizens. Considering the history, what it means, and general attitude, Indian mascots should be

Snyder and others strongly believe it s sacred and deserves to stay with history behind it. The tradition
started from tribes and chiefs back in the settlement time. Everything now is respect for the tribes in

s society there is a blind love for the teams and mascots we have today. The hidden picture is seeing
that the sports side of our world has the biggest appreciation for Native Americans. Harjo says, it s not

sports world were originally established to show disrespect, but today represent honor and pride.
These offensive names came into a new era and were established across the states. In the beginning of

professors agreed with Snyder and said they shall keep their name. USA Today Sports said, it was bad

Philosophy, Interdisciplinary Teaching and Student Experience
ABSTRACT: This paper focuses on novel approaches open to teachers of philosophy in particular, but
more generally also to other university teachers, in the face of what Allan Bloom saw as the waning of
a literary culture. It is argued that, although some of Bloom s suggestions regarding the successful
engagement of students interest against overwhelming odds are didactically valuable, he neglects
precisely those avenues from which students could benefit most on the basis of their own experience
in a world largely devoid of literary attachments but saturated with audiovisual ones. These options

The reason behind this assumption is my belief that, even if Rorty were right that philosophy is just
one voice in the conversation of humankind or one language game among others and even if it does
not occupy a hierarchically superior position in relation to other conversation partners, it is not one
that we could blithely give up whenever we felt like it, as his own continued practice of it
demonstrates. To give up philosophizing would require that we first cease to be self conscious beings
not just conscious beings, but beings conscious of being conscious, or reflective beings, homo sapiens
sapiens. And the day we are no longer such beings, we would no longer be human, and I could well
imagine that philosophy would have no place in a world populated by such unreflective creatures.
Jean Francois Lyotard (1991) has hinted and I agree with him that our humanity is at present being
threatened by an inhuman system of global development, but also that the resources exist within us to
resist the dehumanizing effects of such a system, even if, in the process, we have to draw on
something within us which is inhuman in a different sense: the sense of that which will always escape

needs to be melted at a temperature of 2,200 degrees fahrenheit, which is equivalent to the
temperature of lava; when wanting to gather glass a four to five foot blowpipe is put into the furnace
(para.3). Homer L. Hoyt states that gathering is used to control the molten glass onto the blowpipe

blob is on the end, states Fabricius (para.4). After doing this the glass should be taken to be rolled on a
steel table to smooth and give shape to the glass (para. 5). Hoyt states that fusing is the process of
joining glass during the molten state (43). Drawing is when the glass is being pulled to a smaller
diameter (43). When wanting to make a flower tooling is used to shape the glass into a form with a
tool (43). To remove residual stresses in the glass after it has been worked the process of annealing is
used (43). It is very common to blow through the pipe when wanting to make a vase/vessel. When
doing this a small bubble should form inside the hot glass but if the artist blows too much air the glass
can become too thin according to Fabricius (para.6). Also once blown different colors can be added

Inherently dangerous, fight dogs, or vicious are just a few words that come to most people s minds
when they see or hear the word Pit bull. Pit bulls are feared because of their past reputation as fight
dogs and this has led to the banning of Pit bulls in many counties and cities across the United States.
However, I have had the honor of owning a Pit bull as well as knowing many great Pit bulls a Pit bull
owners over the years, and what my experience shows is that it s not the breed, but the owner that

this is because of the negative way they have seen Pit bulls portrayed. My Pit bull was able to
disprove these false assumptions made on his breed by proving to people that where you come from
doesn t define you, but how you treat people does. In fact, he was so kind to people that sometimes it
would shock them because they thought Pit bulls were supposed to be this vicious breed that could not
be controlled.
Hopefully my personal experience has been able to shine a positive light on Pit bulls and shown that
when it comes down to a dog their breed shouldn t define them because a dog is just a reflection of
their owner and if a Pit bull is treated correctly they won t randomly lash out at their owner, but will

The traditional family model of one spouse working full time outside the home and the other spouse,
usually the mom, staying at home and caring for the children seems to have gone by the wayside
somewhat in the last twenty years. And in a single parent situation, it is nothing short of impossible to
work out such a program. But the need for a consistent adult caregiver in the home for your kids does
not go away. So we have to find alternatives. There are a number of alternatives that can make sure
your kids are cared for and allow you to continue to maintain income, which itself is a critical need of
the house that doesn t go away just because you are a single parent home. Day care for your younger
children is a well known alternative that works well for millions of single parent homes. Sometimes if
you have older children who can care for the younger ones, they can become responsible enough to
manage things between when school lets out and when you get home from work. And in town
relatives can help out too. But even with these fine alternatives, many single moms and dads feel
guilty driving off to work each day leaving their children in these alternative situations. The ideal
situation would be if you could make a good living wage and work from home. You have heard of
people who have worked out such programs so its easy to think, Hey why not me? Its fair question.

19. Effects Of Deforestation On Amazon Forest Resilience Research
There is a chain reaction due to deforestation. Deforestation leads to decrease in biotic pump
disrupting the water cycle leading to a decrease in transpiration and increase in temperature. Such rise
in temperature leads to lack of rainfall, increase droughts and forest fires to which the fires will disrupt
the water cycle even more. The effects of deforestation on Amazon forest resilience research by Zemp
et al. (2017), build upon previous research done in the field of forestry studies and used similar
methods to collect data. Although they have come to some shortcomings such as the risk of
underestimating the differences which are introduced in evapotranspiration following deforestation,

Zemp et al. (2017) s result on forest resilience in their simulation supports that the Amazon s forest
survival also decrease as there is an overlap between reductions of forest resilience with deforested
areas. Despite the evidence showing the detrimental effects of deforestation, Zemp et al. (2017) s
research focuses primarily on the quantity of the forest and deforestation, as such, the research has a
gap such that other geographical influences like fertilization, greenhouse gases, and water use, are not
accounted for. However, Zemp et al. (2017) had gained more understanding as they had used other
research papers, like [Spracklen and Garcia Carreras, 2015; Lejeune et al., 2015], to close the
unanswered gaps in the deforestation issue. Although the paper has explained the effect of
deforestation on water fluxes, the problem remains that in the short and long term, regardless of any
deforestation, many of the Amazon rainforest regions will continue to lose precipitation and become
more vulnerable to disturbances from fire and droughts, even more so in the dry season (Zemp et al.
2017).

21. Islamic Observation Paper
For this ritual project, I decided to observe the ritual of going to mosque and performing their prayers.
The reason I decided to choose an Islamic practice for this project was in part because of the recent
increase in Islamophobia both in the States and in Canada. I was also very interested to maybe observe
some of the differences and similarities in Islamic practices compared to Christian practices as I have
grown up in a very traditional Christian (Pentecostal) household and have never really had the
opportunity to experience, first hand, a religious ceremony foreign to my own. Additionally, when
going to the mosque for this ritual, I had my best friend, Kimia, come with me as she grew up in a
Muslim household and has attended mosque ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regarding performativity, the first thing in this ritual that I both observed and had to take part in was
the wearing of the scarf over my head. This could be seen as a costume required by this ritual which
was followed by only the women. There were also specific musical cues spoken that indicated what
position had to be assumed and when. In terms of performativity, this could possibly be referred to as
a performative speech act if the words have the power to change something in the current state. There
was almost a role that was taken on by all the people engaging in the ritual. As soon as they walked in
the room, and even after the ritual was over, there was a sense of solemnness and reverence that
people exhibited while in that space. When it comes to liminality, this whole ritual exhibited a process
that could be categorized under the three stages of liminality; separation, transition and incorporation.
From the very beginning the ritual began with two distinct forms of separation. As we entered the
building we were separating ourselves from society and entering a space in which people of a shared
community came to participate in a ritual. Not only were we separated from society by entering the
building, but we were also separated from the men that were a part of this ritual. Additionally, this
stage of separation was also seen and experienced physically through the process of putting on the
scarf on our heads. This scarf magnified the weight of the separation of sexes because now there was a
tangible marker of what we signified in this process. While the men resided in a larger room, the
women were kept in a much smaller room in the back. The process of transition is a bit harder to
solidify because there does not seem to be a set point in the ritual where a profound change occurs, but
rather the process of the movements itself works together as part of

22. Pratt And Whitney s Impact On The Military And Commercial...
I will do my research on Pratt and Whitney s significant contribution to the military and commercial
aviation throughout the years. I have always been interested in this great company s ability to learn
develop, evolve and advance their engine manufacturing technological capabilities throughout the
years thus, making them a force to recon with in the engine field. My focus will be towards the
beginning when they started building simple horizontally opposed engines through the radial engines
particularly during nineteen fifties. The wasp and the double wasp capable of producing over 400 and
1300 shaft horsepower respectively for that time period which was unheard of will be discussed. I love
aviation and have always marveled at the share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These airplanes were equipped with four of these engines and transported passengers in comfort.
These engines had better performance, reliability and greater fuel efficiency than any other at that time
and won the company the prestigious Collier Trophy award. Everything remained unchanged until
1966 when again the company introduced the JT9D turbofan fan commercial use. Which would later
be used in the on the iconic and still the best looking airplane in aviation history the Boeing 747 which
opened a completely new era in commercial aviation in 1970.
The P W Wasp Junior was produced by the thousands. It was a simple, dependable, easy to work on
engine. The accessories were attached to the rear and the constant speed prop hub to the front.
Over the years, there have been many different configurations of radial engines, from three cylinders
to nine cylinders, with the seven and nine cylinder versions preferred. When more power is required, a
second engine is bolted at an angle to allow cooling air to reach the second set of cylinders. The
famous P W corn cob engine had four banks of seven cylinder engines attached to one crankshaft.
That s 28 cylinders, and 56 spark plugs to regularly change.
The all time reigning king of radial engines is built by United Aircraft s Pratt Whitney Division. The
man behind the engine was Frederick Rentschler who had designed a revolutionary radial

Dimmesdale and Hester s Quest for Identity in The Scarlet Letter
While allegory is an explicit and tempting reading of Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter, I see in this
novel also the potential of a psychological reading, interpreting it as a search for one s own self. Both
Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne goes through this process and finally succeeded in finding the
duality of one s personality, and the impossibility of complementing the split between individual and
community identity. However, they were compelled to take different paths on this journey, and they
react quite differently when they finally arrive at the conclusion of this search.
Dimmesdale and Hester start out from the same point: their adultery. This sin ... Show more content

Indeed, Dimmesdale longs to speak out that secret, and lighten the burden on him. Why, then, does he
not? Dimmesdale, in his own words, answers thus:
Guilty as they may be, retaining, nevertheless, a zeal for God s glory and man s welfare, they shrink
from displaying themselves black and filthy in the view of men; because, thenceforward, no good can
be achieved by them; no evil of the past be redeemed by better service. So, to their own unutterable
torment, they go about among their fellow creatures, looking pure as new fallen snow; while their
hearts are all speckled and spotted with iniquity of which they cannot rid themselves. (132)
In other words, the fear of social rejection prevents him from speaking the truth. This fear is not just
simple cowardice, but is strengthened by his social stance, his identity. He builds his own identity with
relation to the society, because he cannot turn to himself. He sees himself as being filthy, wretched,
and sinful. He needs to turn to the community for acceptance. He establishes himself as the pillar of
his community. The loss of social acceptance, or, moreover, the abhorrence and rejection of his fellow
citizens, then, would mean more than a cruel reminder of his crime, but the collapse of his whole
identity.
With this strong dependence on the society, Dimmesdale becomes a social man , instead of an
individual

24. Sexual Assault On Campus And The United States Department...
Sexual Assault on Campus
According to The United States Department of Justice, Sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or
behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual
assault are sexual activities such as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation,
incest, fondling, and attempted rape. (Department of Justice) 90 percent of the victims of sexual
assault are women and 10 percent are men, and nearly 99 percent of offenders in single victim assaults
are men (Bureau of Justice Statistics 2010). Sexual Assault can happen to anyone, not just women.
Sexual Assault these days are a big trouble and it is not being addressed in good order, and it is
especially a big problem at the University of Kentucky campus. Although, many people think sexual
assault on campus is not a huge issue, it really is and it is not properly spoken of. Even though people
have different opinions on sexual assault, sexual assault is a big issue on campus and alcohol is largely
to blame.
There are many reasons why alcohol plays a major role in sexual assault. According to College

25. Chagas Disease
Nature History of the disease Chagas disease, also known as American Trypanosomiasis, is a tropical
disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted to humans through contact with the
feces of an infected triatomine bug. The triatomine bug known as the kissing bug is a subspecies of the
Reduviidae family. The bug itself does not cause the disease. Through contact with the fecal matter
from the kissing bug, which is excreted near the bite wound, the parasite enters the bloodstream and
begins to develop and reproduce. Chagas disease was discovered and named after a Brazilian
physician Carlos Chagas, who discovered the disease in 1909. Chagas disease is endemic throughout
much of Mexico, Central America, and South America ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both drugs are almost 100% effective in curing the disease if given right after the infection, at the
beginning of the acute phase, including the cases of congenital transmission but they have a very low
anti parasitic, activity against the prevalent chronic form of the disease. However, the effectiveness of
these medication decreases, the longer the person has been infected. The treatment is very long and
typically last for about two months and some adverse reactions may occur in up to 40% of the affected
patients. Challenges faced with the management of the Chagas Although there have been many
successes in the area of Chagas treatment in endemic areas there have been many challenges which
includes: · Lack of training and education for medical and health care professional · Maintaining and
strengthening the advances made in disease control · Enhance access to diagnosis and treatment for
millions of infected people · Emergence of Chagas disease in regions previously considered to be free

27. Analysis Of Fernand Leger s The Divers
With most of the 20 elements and principles evident in the painting The Divers (Red and Black) by
Fernand Leger, we can achieve a better understanding and cohesiveness of this piece. Additionally,
alongside with his other paintings, the medium used for this painting was also oil on canvas. In this
painting, Leger incorporates a specific style called Cubism and incorporates a strong simple imagery.
The artist s personal style consists of bold use of color while combining his art as something that
everyone can enjoy. A brief formal analysis of this painting will show us how he used the main
principle of emphasis to showcase the characteristics of the human body progressing in space. In order
to demonstrate these specific characteristics, Leger incorporates many different types of elements into
this piece. In this painting, color plays an important role. The shapes of the blue squares contrast
altogether with the other shapes and also, with the mutated beige background. Leger uses numerous
colors such as the neon yellow, red, blue, black, and green in order to reveal that the colors are free
and therefore, these colors exist in space. As mentioned earlier, this painting included a variety of
different shapes; there are two different types of shape that can be seen in this painting. The first type
is geometric or regular shapes such as the squares, circles, and rectangles. The second, on the other
hand, are organic and freeform shapes such as the feet, hands, and face. Next, Leger incorporates
many lines throughout this portrait. From curved lines to a single horizontal line, Leger includes each
different type to develop a sense of movement, or rhythm. The curved lines makes the viewer s eyes
circle around the piece to further realize the symbolism. For space, Leger leaves many of the corner as
negative space. However, the corners of this painting are not the only ones Leger leaves as space.
Because the shapes and colors are kept simple, there s also quite a series of distance between the
shapes even throughout the whole entire painting. Again, because of the simplicity of the shapes, even
the texture of this painting can be seen as smooth. The painting does not involve any harsh or rugged
lines, and is

29. The Hawthorne Effect
Hawthorne Effect
The Hawthorne effect was discovered as an outcome of analyzing older experiments that were
conducted at the Hawthorne Works, a factory outside Chicago between 1924 and 1932. The term
Hawthorne Effect was first suggested by Henry A. Landsberger in 1955. According to Landsberger,
the Hawthorne effect is a type of reactivity. It refers to any short term increase in productivity that
may occur in an organization as a result of being watched or appreciated.
In organizations, it has been observed that small changes like increasing lighting, clearing obstacles
from the floor, maintaining clean work stations or even increased attention to the workforce has a
short term impact on productivity.

Definitions for the Hawthorne Effect
Hawthorne effect in research refers to the scenario where a non manipulated variable causes and
unexpected impact on the variable that was originally to be manipulated. The Hawthorne effect may
also refer to experimental subjects complying increasingly well with what they perceive as the wishes
of the experimenter.
In an experiment, a Hawthorne effect would refer to an effect that happens in a desired direction but
not because of the expected reason. The positive effect happens not because of a variable being
modified or introduced but rather the effect takes place because the participants know they are being
watched. Experimenters need to consider how the consequences of performance affect how a subject
behaves. The reactions of a participant to an experiment can itself cause some changes. The
conclusion therefore is that any novel change in environment or attention on subjects will be well
received by

Disruptive behavior in the classroom
Over the years at work I have noticed that disruptive behavior of students is a big challenge and a
frequent problem that teachers have to address in their classrooms. For those who are involved in
education know that teachers on a daily basis have a high amount of demands like improve test
results, successfully teach to students with diverse needs, and raise ability to serve all students, often
with minimum resources and support. Consequences of several national Gallup polls evidently

31. How Did Steam Engines Change People s Lives
Steam engines were invented on February 21, 1804 by Richard Trevithick. The locomotives use steam
as a power source. These locomotives use combustible material such as coal, wood, and oil as fuel.
Water and fuel supplies are usually on the locomotive or in a trailer behind it. Steam engines were first
invented in great britain in the 19th century. It was mostly used for railroad transport until about
halfway through the 20th century. In this paper I will explain the history of steam locomotives and
how they changed people s lives and America as a whole. One great completion of the 19th century
was the transcontinental railroad. There are two railroads that make up the railroad, the Central Pacific
and San Francisco, California and the

Have you been dealing with mice in your home for years and can t seem to get them out? You re not
alone: mice are incredibly clever creatures that are nearly impossible to catch, let alone eliminate. First
of all, mice have incredibly senses. Their hearing range is wide and includes incredibly high pitched
sounds, which makes it easier for them to hear you coming. And their smell is very strong: they
actually recognize living creatures almost entirely by smell. Some mice can even track intruders and
friends by sniffing out their footprints. And while mice have fairly poor vision, they make up for it
with their sense of touch. Those cute little whiskers detect vibrations and send these sensations
directly to their brain. However, long tactile fur also threads through their coat, giving them an even
stronger sense of touch. They can often literally feel your footsteps from across the house. ... Show
