The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis
1. Cognitive anthropology emerged in the 1960s and is concerned with folk taxonomies and semantic
domains as they are practiced in ethnolinguistics and by ethnoscientists in the New Ethnography. The
New Ethnography is a name for cognitive anthropology known for investigative techniques devised by
Harold Conklin, Charles Frake, and Ward Goodenough .Cognitive anthropology s theoretical
orientation was emic (the insider point of view, which is different from etic or the outsider point of
view).
Cognitive anthropology is rooted in both Boasian cultural relativism and anthropological linguistics as
well as cognitive processes. One major precursor for cognitive anthropology was the Sapir Whorf
Hypothesis. The Sapir Whorf Hypothesis was shaped by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf and
states that languages classify experiences differently. Other than Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee
Whorf, Kenneth Pike (a linguist) was influential on cognitive anthropology. He contrasted emic with
etic and made the analogy between phonemics, which is the linguistic meaning created by sounds, and
phonetics, which is the linguistic sounds that create meaning. The other major figures of cognitive
anthropology include Ward Goodenough, Charles Frake, Harold Conklin, Roy D Andrade, Floyd
Lounsbury, Stephen Levinson, and Susan Weller. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to ethnolinguistics there s the New Ethnography, semantic domain (a mental domain of
cultural meaning that is the focus of inquiry in cognitive anthropology), componential analysis
(research technique used to generate folk taxonomies of semantic domains), and folk taxonomies
(culturally conditioned maps of semantic domains). Early on in the development of cognitive
anthropology, folk taxonomies were focused on things like diseases and

Kitchenaid Research Paper
I am an 18 year old female who was born in Seattle, but was raised in Shoreline, WA. The KitchenAid
mixer was bought by my parents when I was in my late teens in hopes of living a healthier lifestyle
and limiting the amount of store bought foods by creating something more health conscious. It also
allows me to investigate my creative side and put it to valuable use. Few people besides my family
know to the certain extent how much I like to be artistic and cook/bake. Nevertheless, this object
could potentially be misinterpreted due to societal norms of the traditional roles between a male and a
female. This hefty metal mixer is similar to hand mixers except the fact that the KitchenAid will do
majority of the work for you. The artifact has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just looking at it, the object is a neutral color that isn t eye catching, but at the same time it isn t dull
or a sore sight to see. While people may assume it would belong to a female it would be difficult to
identify its owner by simply looking at the mixer alone since it is unisex. I preferred this color of a
light charcoal gray with a hint of silver over the bright fire engine red that was also available. Others
may automatically gender this object towards a female because the object is a household item that is
categorized as something more feminine than masculine. However, people might make assumptions
that I am more of a homebody, but once you get to know me I am actually talkative. They may also
assume that I m an introvert that wants to be alone most of the time. In the beginning, I am more
closed off and anxious in certain situations, but once I get more comfortable with my surroundings I
begin to open up. That is just simply my personality. While I do stay at home, I love the outdoors and
traveling to new and different places to grasp an understanding and appreciation of their culture. Even
the little things, I will go outside and spend time with my friends and family any chance I get
especially ever since college started and my life has been hectic. Everyone will have their own
opinions and assumptions about certain topics, but as long as they communicate their views in a
respected manner it will allow both parties to express their thoughts in a civilized and non

The Great Depression Essay
The Causes of the Great Depression
The cause of the Great Depression has been debated for many years. The actual cause of the Great
Depression is a multitude of factors, there was no single cause. Several reasons for the Great
Depression were supply and demand, the banking system, wages of workers, success and failure of
business, government policy, excessive speculation in the stock market and the unequal distribution of
wealth between the rich and the middle class. While there are many theories to what caused the Great
Depression; all of these factors played a role in the Great Depression.

States for most goods. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was still a major gap in income of the rich and middle class. The top 0.1% of Americans in
1929 had a combined income equal to the bottom 42% of Americans, while 80% of the people had no
savings at all (McElvaine 38). The average income for the farmer was only $273 compared to the
average national income of $750 (McElvaine 21). By 1929 the productivity of the American industry
had risen 43 percent while the wages only increase 8 percent (McElvaine 39). The American worker
had enjoyed the 1920s as an era that was filled with new inventions, the radio, automobile, electric
irons, and refrigerators were in every home. The average American worker could not afford to buy
these items, but they could if they made small weekly or monthly payments. Convincing Americans to
go against traditional values was difficult, but the advertising industry convinced them they could
(McElvaine 41). The average worker in America was living in poverty, making about $24.76 a week.
Most Americans did not have much money to loose when the stock market crashed; they had no
savings and no investments. The people who lost the most were the wealthy investors (McElvaine 17).
Speculation in the 1920 s caused many to invest money they did not have. The stock market was a
Bull Market in the 1920s, it seemed that it would never end. Hoping to get rich, people from all walks
of life were buying up stocks. The boom

Government Control Gun Control
The second part of reforming the Republican Party involves enacting stricter gun regulations to
decrease the amount of gun violence in the United States. The official policy from the Republican
platform believes that all law abiding citizens should have the right to own guns (2016 Republican
Party Platform). However, recent mass shootings in California and Texas has called into question on
whether the regulations that are in place are enough, or if there should be tougher background checks
and restrictions on guns. The Republican Party s current stance on these recent shootings has caused a
massive backlash from the media and the public, which is resulting in a rapid decrease in popularity.
The American public is dismayed when they turn on the news and see reports of another mass
shooting causing unnecessary deaths because of gun violence and Republican politicians are attacked
on the media for not taking the necessary action of stricter gun regulations. However, with this new
stance the Republicans will now support more detailed background checks and restrict the type of
guns that can be owned by regular citizens. This will be heavily supported by most liberal groups but
disapproved by the almost all conservative groups. Groups like the Solid Liberals, Faith and Family
Left, and the Next Generation Left believe that the government controlling gun ownership should be
implemented due to the increase of mass shootings. However, groups that are far right, the Young

Failures of Blockbuster Essay
Blockbuster Incorporation Blockbuster was the largest movie rental chain in the Movies industry
around the world (Biesada a). According to Rourke, Rothburd and Stansell (2006), Blockbuster
mainly focused on providing in home rental, retail movie, and game entertainment . It created 9,100
video stores and provided services to almost three million of customers in America and 24 other
countries (p. 74). In 2010, the company filed for bankruptcy since it failed to adapt new technology in
their strategies, and was sold to satellite TV service provider DISH Network in 2011 (Biesada b).

Based on the Form 10 K (2010), Blockbuster stated that: Our level of indebtedness may make it more
difficult for us to pay our debts as they become due and more necessary for us to divert our cash flow
from operations to debt service payments (p. 22). At the end of 2009, their long term debt went up to
855.9 million of dollars (Form 10 K, p.40). One of the factors that negatively affected Blockbuster s
income and cash flow due to their debt obligation was the payment due date. It made even more
difficult for Blockbuster to pay off the debts when the company faced economic downturns. The
decrease in revenue made Blockbuster s obligation and interest higher. Due to this fact, the company
had a limited fund to contribute their strategy and operation. While their revenue decreased and debt
increased, Blockbuster gradually lost their ability to remain the war price as low as others. The
company ended up going bankrupt. The first failure of Blockbuster s strategies, which lead it to
bankruptcy, was the negative relationship with their consumers. While Netflix s chief executive, Reed
Hastings, recognized the technology had been grown rapidly and would change the transmission of
movie rental industry, Blockbuster s CEO, James Keyes, believed that consumers would still prefer to
the brick and mortar rental structure. Thus, Keyes planned to focus on expanding Blockbuster s stores

Violence In Battle Royale
The Japanese film Battle Royale is named of the most controversial films in cinema history. If not
that, it is definitely still to this day an important film to talk about. The film received major backlash
from the people of Japan and the Japanese government; the film did not have a worldwide theatrical
release when it first came out in 2000. The main problem with the film was not because of the
violence. Japanese films when Battle Royale came out were known for how graphic they were. People
did not like the fact that children no older than sixteen were the subject matter in a highly violent film.
Not only that but the children were in fact intensely killing each other. The film s main plot was based
on a book of the same name by Japanese writer Koushun Takami. The story is about a group of middle
school students that go on a field trip only to realize they have been picked for the year s Battle
Royale . The students are each given supplies and a random weapon. They are told to kill each other
over a span of three days with only one survivor at the end. If there is more than one survivor,
everyone is killed. Overall, people s reactions to the film reveal their opinion about child violence in
cinema.

Grafting of the Bone
Bone grafting is performed to restore bone that has been lost due to injury, trauma, or disease. Injury
may cause haematoma and bleeding from adjacent structures to occur. Haematoma is clotting of blood
that occur in any specific region such as around the broken bone ends. This event is localized. Two
ends involved are proximal and distal bone end which is the medium for osteonal healing
(ossification) to occur.
Ossification is the process of bone formation that is usually beginning at particular centers in each
prospective bone and involving the activities of species osteoblasts that segregate and deposit
inorganic bone substance about themselves (Webster, 2013). To form fracture callus, hyaline cartilage
and woven bone has to be formed first. In order this to happen, chondroblasts and osteoblasts will
arise from periosteum of each ends respectively.
After that, fracture callus will undergo the process of bone subtitution, followed with endochondral
ossification, resulting in production of lamellar bone. Final remodelling of the bone is completed by
deposition of compact bone by osteoblasts in resorption pits prepared by the osteoclasts (Gaston and
Simpson, 2007). This natural osteonal healing would be done well if and only if these four
prerequisites are active.
Firstly, cells with active osteogenic potential. Secondly, medium which has active osteoconductive
matrix. Thirdly, medium with an active osteoconductive stimulus. Lastly, a mechanically active and
stable

If successful, additional locations will be added. This program is intended to increase ridership by
making access to bicycle storage more secure, which will enable people to ride their bikes to the bus
stations and commute on public transportation. Before this pilot program was conceived, commuters
needed to ride their bicycles to transit stations, lock them up on an unattended rack at the stations or
bring them on the bus and store them at their end destinations. Many people do not work in buildings
with secure bike storage and theft at the unattended and exposed racks is a concern for riders because
bicycles cost hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars. Transit staff believes this cumbersome and
unsecure process deters bicycle riders from utilizing public transit during their commutes. As a
remedy, this project entails building a large secure room with racks for bicycle storage onto transit
stations. The rooms will be climate controlled with HVAC systems, security cameras, Wi Fi access,
and have a controlled entry. Nancy s responsibilities in creating this program included the
development of the software that enables customers to register for this program and use their existing
go to cards as a way to access the bike storage area. While the Metropolitan Council uses many
different types of software and IS service packages that have varying degrees of customization from
0% percent customized to 100% customized, this particular project was conceived, designed,

Dreaming of Home Essay examples
Dreaming of Home
Everyday, after waking up, I realized that I had been dreaming about home again. I lay staring at the
ceiling for a moment or two. Then, dragging myself from the bed, I walked to the window and threw
open the curtains. The wide open space of the New Mexico high desert stared back blankly at me. The
cobalt blue skies, peach colored Sandia Mountains and endless waves of sagebrush and juniper stood
in stark contrast to my dreamscape. For the past eight years, my first view of the day was this one. But
today was different. Today, I was going home.
I grew up in Dublin in the 1970s. To understand how that shaped the person I am today, you have to

None of my playmates in Dublin considered me to be a true Dubliner even though I d spent most of
my life there. My parents were country people and my accent was definitely not the same as my
sundry schoolyard friends and associates. It still had too much of the country about it. Of course, in
the country, people could only hear the harsh ring of the Dublin accent that I was slowly picking up.
So I was never fully accepted there either other than as somewhat of a curiosity. A great division has
always existed between Dubliners and the rest of the country. Even the lowliest of the Dublin low
consider themselves eminently superior to their poor, unrefined bog dwelling cousins. The simple fact
is that because they are lucky enough to hail from Dublin, they are therefore born with an innate
superiority. Alas for them, it is a massive exercise in self deception. To my country born brethren, this
is no great new discovery.
My memories of childhood are now, of course, colored by my later experiences. Our neighborhood
was a fairly new working class suburb on the outer edges of the northside of Dublin. I see now how
monochrome and homogenous the society around me was at that time. Everyone I knew was white
and freckle faced and everyone was catholic to some or other degree of devotion. There were
whispered rumors of actual protestants living down the street from us, and until a tiny influx of
Cambodian refugees into the country in the late 70s and early 80s, this

Effects Of Moving Away In A Family
The effects of someone moving away in a family
The moments in life when people have to move away is the worst part for some people who have the
feeling of being lost and lonely because it s usually a loved one moving from a state or even just a

American Imperialism In Australia Essay
The reasons for colonisation by the Spanish in the Americas and the British in Australia had many
similarities. These similar factors included, improving trade routes, expanding their colonies for
wealth and power and obtaining new resources. In addition, both groups wanted to explore beyond
their own country. However, there were also a few big differences. For example, the British used
Australia for the keeping of convicts, due to the overcrowded prisons in their own country. They also
wanted to claim the land, preventing settlement in Australia from other countries, such as the
Netherlands (Dutch). An aim for the Spanish, in the Americas, was to convert more people to

The Challenges Of Immigrants In South Africa
Countless United states citizens declare that immigrants come to the United States to break the law,
take jobs away from natives, and seek aid from the government. Many do not stop to ask the question
why immigrants come to this country? Or why are they willing to work at such a low wage? Coming
from immigrant family myself, I have been judged and condemned by my background. But no one has
bothered to ask my background story of what is feels to come from an immigrant family. I feel no
shame and I feel proud where I came from, several will say horrible things about immigrants. Still I
am one of the millions of immigrants that are in this country going through similar challenges. As

The Transformational Leadership Model Of A Business...
There are several different theories that can be applied to leadership. Hence, there are no right or
wrong theories, purely just diverse perceptions. The trait theory of leadership believes that leaders are
born and not made. This theory claims that leadership is inherited, and great leaders are born with
natural leadership traits. Zaccaro, S. J. (2007) defines this as a unique property of extraordinary
individuals whose decisions are capable of sometimes radically changing the streams of history [Pg6].
On the other hand, Kendra Cherry (2015) describes the transformational leadership model as a type of
leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow. Elon Musk; founder, CEO and
CTO of SpaceX, co founder, CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors and co founder of PayPal is a
prime example of the transformational leadership model (Jeremy Unruh, 2016). This essay will
describe and critique the trait based approach to leadership, giving examples of how it can be used in a
business environment and then giving a compared and contrasted view against the transformational
leadership model.
Kendra Cherry (2016) describes the trait based approach to leadership as different personality traits
and characteristics that are linked to successful leadership across a variety of situations . In addition

Aviation has been in rapid growth since its beginning in the early 20th century. With that rapid growth
that created challenges. Who will regulate the airways? Should we have a certifying official? What
will the rules of flying be? With those questions in mind the government passed the Civil Aeronautics
Act of 1938. The Civil Aeronautics Act transferred federal responsibilities for non military aviation
from the Bureau of Air Commerce to a new, independent agency, the Civil Aeronautics Authority
(Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938, n.d.). In order to see how the Federal Aviation Act of 1958 came into

Gatsby s tragic flaw lies within his inability to see that the real and the ideal cannot coexist. Gatsby s
ideal is Daisy. He sees her as perfect and worthy of all his affections and praise. In reality she is
undeserving and through her actions, proves she is pathetic rather than honorable. When Daisy says
Sophisticated God I m sophisticated (18), she contradicts who she really is. The reader sees irony here,
knowing she is far from sophisticated, but superficial, selfish and pathetic. Gatsby s vision is based on
his belief that the past can be repeated, can t repeat the past? Why of course you can (111)! The

Russian Vladimir Putin Addressed The World Concerning The...
March 18, 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the world regarding the annexation of
Crimea. A referendum that took place only days before resulted in an 82% turnout rate, with over 90%
of the ballots casting in favor of Crimea s reunification with Russia ( History: What does Crimea,
2014). Many questioned the reasoning behind Russia s sudden need to reestablish its hold on Crimea;
legally a Ukrainian territory. The Russian Ukrainian relationship dates back to the ninth to the mid
thirteenth century in the Eastern Slavic state of Kievan Rus; an area that expanded from the Baltic to
the Black Sea (Bates, 2014). The two countries have been linked to each other for centuries; they
share a similar culture and sense of nationalism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By losing Ukraine to its independence, Russia lost thousands of armed forces and military equipment;
this coupled with the effect the separation had on Russia s trade agreements with Europe meant that
Russia was left weak, and economically unstable. It was one of the biggest partitioned nations in the
world. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in December of 1991, Russia was left in a fragile state,
especially after getting accustomed to being treated as a world superpower; its sphere of influence
significantly declined. Russians see this as a time of economic and political instability leaving them
vulnerable to the West (Larrabee, 2010), one of its biggest reservations being the potential for a
Western stronghold along its international border. Because of its weakened state, much of Russia s
distress towards Western policies was noticeably dismissed.
Despite having unwaveringly opposed NATO s expansion to include previously Russian territories
such as Ukraine and Georgia (Mearsheimer, 2014), in the mid 1990s, the Clinton administration
openly disregarded Russia s concerns by pushing for NATO s expansion towards previous members of
the Soviet Union. By 2004, Latvia, Romania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary and many more were admitted

The Controversy Of Tagus s Argument
The argument mentioned by the author is flawed. The author not only takes a handful of resources but
also uses those limited resources is to make a sweeping generalization that the government of Tagus
should do everything that it can do to promote that new type of millet. Basically, the argument is based
on the assumption that as the millet is a common food in Tagus, the people will readily adopt the new
variety. But, it has not mentioned anything that the new variety of millet has the same taste. So, there
is no any certainty that the people will like the taste and adopt it. Therefore, further study of the newly
engendered variety must be done to ensure its adoption. Furthermore, in the argument, there is no any
evidence that the subsidies

Essay On Zara
Zara | Background information
Zara is one of the largest international fashion companies and has over 2000 stores located across 88
countries. It is part of the large distribution group Inditex, which also owns brands such as Pull Bear,
Stradivarius and Bershka.
Zara s first store was opened in 1975 by Amancio Ortega in Spain. It featured low priced fashion items
that looked similar to the products of the more popular brands. As the store proved to be a success,
Ortega opened more Zara stores within Spain.
During the 1980 s, Zara started its international expansion as a result of a change in its production of
clothing, which allowed the company to react to trends much faster, creating instant fashions .
Zara is unique in its marketing model as Zara has a policy of zero advertisement. Plus, its concept of
fast fashion enables Zara to produce new collections every few weeks. This stimulates customers to
visit Zara approximately seventeen times during a year, opposed to the three times other, similar
companies expect their customers to visit, as Zara s products change regularly. Customers only have a
short period of time to buy a specific item. The fact that Zara produces all its clothes itself, instead of
buying clothes from other retailers, also makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of the exclusive and luxury image, people will want to buy a product just because it is a

Unfortunately for them, they were not allowed to take the products with them. This shows how Chanel

The And Criminal Justice System Essay
Introduction
When comparing real life experiences to book theories there can be a lot of things that are not the
same. One real experience to be found similar to a book experience and deals with a lot of the same
things is CASA to Courts and Criminal Justice in America. They both deal with Advocates, Attorneys,
Judges, courts, etc. There are always different scenarios to be faces in person than what is in the
books. Do books really portray everything that that happens in the real world, or describe every job
description and duties that a job title entails? Book experience and life experiences more often than
not have the same concept but they may not portray everything the same. Also they serve different and
similar functions as well.
Advocate Roles
Advocates are an essential role for juveniles in the criminal justice system. Their role is to speak up
for people in situations where the advocate is either more knowledgeable, will suffer no consequences
by speaking out, and where they can be a buffer for their client. (Criminaljusticeprograms.com, 2013)
CASA (court appointed special advocate) / GAL (Guardian ad Litem) is a trained volunteer appointed
by a judge to represent the best interest of children in cases that come before the court due to alleged
abuse or neglect. 600,000+ children pass through the U.S. foster care and family court system
annually. The average child will spend nearly 2 years in foster care, and on average those children will
change homes three times.

The Importance Of The United States Patriot Act
Two months after the September eleventh attacks on the Twin Towers, President Bush signed a
document called the United States Patriot Act. The Patriot Act was signed to help prevent another
terrorist attack on the United States through many types of surveillance. Growing concerns have come
out about the Patriot Act and how much power it gives to the federal government. But, the government
does need to monitor the citizens to try and stop another September eleventh attack by collecting
information on suspected terrorists and stopping money laundering. The September eleventh attacks
killed many people in the Twin Towers. President Bush passed the United States Patriot Act to help
defend the nation from another horrific attack. The Patriot Act gives the National Security Agency
(NSA) and other organizations freedom to spy on suspected terrorists to stop terrorism. Many people
do not agree with giving the government the power to spy on anybody. The opposers believe that the,

They also believe that it goes against the fourth amendment that states, the right of the people to be
secure... against unreasonable searches and seizures... upon probable cause (Fourth Amendment). With
the fourth amendment stating that people have the right to privacy, the opposers believe that it is
unconstitutional for the President to sign the Patriot Act. The government can foil terrorist plans by

How The 2010 Haiti Earthquake Changed My Life
In January 12, 2010, I encounter a tragedy that had me believe that I wasn t going to see what my life
would be like after I graduate college. this unforgettable tragedy was the 2010 Haiti earthquake with a
magnitude of 7.0.
The day start like every normal day. I remember waking up at about 7:25 and took a shower after that i
put on my school uniform. I remember I had coffee and with a baguette (a long thin French bread
made from basic lean dough). Before I left my house, my Aunt called me and give a $1 for lunch
which was basically nothing but money is money. I left my house at exactly 8:00 o clock and arrived
at the school right before class started. I was in 6th and if you were in my grade, recess was always at
12:30 for us. That day, at recess I bought a patty with the dollar my Aunt gave me and played soccer
with my friends and I remember we made the ball using socks and plastic bags. At 1:15 in the
afternoon, I went back to class with my classmate and I remember the first thing the teacher wanted
was to take out our homework. I recalled it was a math homework cause Monday homework was ...

The Effects Of Teen Pregnancy On Teens
It takes a village to raise a child, or at least it was once believed to. It seems each year parents are
getting younger in age, and the birth rate is rising higher. Mississippi has the highest birth rates in teen
pregnancy, and has held this title for the past few years. This problem has had such a rise to fame
because this is a problem that can be prevented. Parents and communities should take action to help
lower the teen pregnancy birth rate in Mississippi. Since the birth rate in teens is so high that means
there is more need of government assistance. This becomes such a problem in states because with
more government assistance come more money, and in states like Mississippi, who is ranked as one of
the poorest states in America, this falls back on everyone. Even though the birth rate has gotten out of
control, teen pregnancy is 100% preventable. With the right knowledge and explanations this problem
could be incredibly reduced. Teen pregnancy becomes an even larger problem because not only does it
affect the families involved, but it affects the economy. According to Newswire PR, Mississippi has
seen a 36% decline in the teen birth rate between 1991 and 2010. (PR). Also it has been said that teen
pregnancy could also cause higher rates with incarceration and child welfare, which are the main
concerns from the government (PR). For the past few years many have tried to come up with solutions
for teen pregnancy rates. One that comes across the board for years is

Medi A Powerful Tool Of Communication
Essay
Media, being the most powerful tool of communication there is, influence societies in many ways. In
fact the hypodermic needle theory states that passive audiences are directly influenced by media. On
the other hand, from a Marxist perspective, one can argue the opposite that it is the audiences who
influence the information which is produced via the media. In this essay this group assessed and
contrasted the media of three countries namely Singapore, Jamaica and Bolivia in relation to their
respective economy, society, values and political system. These three countries differ gravely in terms
of their cultures, norms economic activities, religions and even social ills etc and yet despite these
differences, they all share one thing in common media coverage. In addition, each country has rules
and regulations geared towards the protection of journalists although sometimes such are not enforced
fully.
Bolivia is named after Venezuelan born liberator Simon Bolivar and boarders with five countries
namely Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Peru. Bolivar is unique in that it has two capital La Paz
(administrative) and Sucre (constitutional). With a population of an estimated population of over 10
million people in this South American country, there are nearly 200 privately owned television
stations, more than 480 radio stations, eight (8) national newspapers as well as many local ones. Of
the various forms of media, radio is the most important source of news and

Analysis Of Riverine By Alice Hoffman
The story Riverine has a lot of great details and interesting quotes that may stick out to a read and
make you wanna continue reading until you finish the whole story. The key thing that stood out to me
early in this book was the quote from Alice Hoffman s Being an outsider is the one thing we all have
in common. The reason for it is because it is completely true not matter what you do in your life now
or in the future you will always be an outsider from time to time depending on different situations.
The narrator of the story feels like an outsider from different times in the story because she feels
perhaps she can not fit in into anything going on around her. She first begins to feel as an outsider due

Essay On How To Shoot A Baseball Bat
One of the hardest things to do for nearly any athlete is to hit a baseball. Some of the greatest sports
heroes ever, couldn t but the bat on the ball no matter how hard they tried. Even players talented
enough to make it professionally, have an on base success rate of less than 33%.
Hitting a baseball is difficult, but consistent contact can be made if you swing properly. Here are some
three tips on how to swing a baseball bat correctly, great suggestions for any level of competition.
Solid Foundation
A good baseball swing starts with your base. You need a good foundation to productively make
contact with a baseball. When your foundation is unstable, your swing will be erratic; as well will be
the results. Work on stable stance that establishes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The component they all have in common is sturdiness. Feet are spaced approximately twice the width
of your hips, with slightly bent knees and your body weight shifted towards the balls of your feet.
Open Your Hips
This is one of the more difficult aspects of properly swinging at a baseball. When your hips open to
soon, you will be behind the pitch. Opening your hips too early will cause you to swing over the ball,
or be too far out in front.
Rotating your hips at precisely the exact instant the bat makes contact with the ball is how to generate
the most power from your swing. The most accomplished hitters refer to this concept, as launching
your hips. The stance and hip rotation are where a hitter s power is generated.
Can t Hit What You Can t See
Tracking the ball is one aspect of hitting a baseball. It cannot stop at any point during your swing. If
your eyes drift, so will your head. When you pull your head off the ball, you will compromise your
swing.
Most of the time you ll miss the pitch completely, or at best make poor contact. To keep you head on
the ball, never take your eyes off the ball. The best hitters profess to actually seeing the ball make
contact with that bat. Good hitters insist, you cannot hit what you cannot see, so focus on the ball to
help keep your head

Basic Butterfly Information Before you learn about Indiana butterflies, you ll need to know some
butterfly basics. First, butterflies are insects with wings made of colorful scales, a curled up mouthpart
called a proboscis, and clubbed antennae, with thick ends like baseball bats. Butterflies are part of an
insect order, a category level entomologists (people who study insects) use to organize insects into
groups, called Lepidoptera, along with moths. The name Lepidoptera comes from the Greek words for
scale (lepido) and wing (pteron). The scales on a butterfly s wings are actually modified hairs arranged
in rows. The scales deflect light energy, transmitting numerous bright colors to

Lactase Experiment
The results of the experiment vary from what is reported by previous studies (Curry, 2013, Enattah et
al., 2002, Tishkoff, 2007). The experiment was conducted on students currently in the Biology 225
course in Schenectady, NY. The class was primarily composed of individuals whom are descendants
of Europe. Therefore, an assumption was made that by in large, the percentage of lactase persistent in
the class that was expected was going to be near 95% (Curry, 2013). However, such a high percentage
was not found. Of the class, only 49.3% of individuals were determined to possess a genotype that
results in a phenotype of lactase persistence. Conversely, 40.8% of the class was found to carry the
genotype lct/lct which results in the phenotype of lactase non persistence. Therefore, the results are
nearly 50% off from what we expected initially. This could be for numerous reasons, but perhaps the
assumption should not have been made. The results fit much better when compared to the world
average occurrence of lactase persistence. Curry notes that out of all individuals over the age of 8
years old, only 35% still possess the ability to digest and breakdown the lactose in dairy products
(2013). The results do fit closer to the world average, therefore indicating that the assumption may
have been wrong, the results of the experiment still do not necessarily indicate whether the total
population of students in the Spring 2016 Biology 225 class fits the societal model where there is a

Importance Of Pep Rallies
I am going to tell you about the seating during pep rallies. I think that all of the grades in the school sit
as a whole. They should also be fired up and be having fun. Also be as social as possible. So I agree
that the seating should be all grades together.
All of the students should be fired up. I mean that s what pep rallies are for. You have to be as cheerful
as you can for your school. You should be proud and support your team or school. It is very important
to be fired up of course not all the time but every now and then is fine. It gets your blood pumping and
your being energetic so it is healthy for kids to cheer.

Marie Antoinette, a young and hated queen, ruled France in the beginning of the French Revolution.
There has been many books, articles, documentaries, and movies that interpret Marie Antoinette s life.
An example of a movie is the 2006 Hollywood drama Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst. What
many people wonder is if the movies, books, and documentaries stay along with what really happened
in history. After watching the Hollywood movie and reading books about Marie Antoinette, someone
can conclude that the movie stuck with true, historical events most of the duration of the movie but, in

Infant Observation Essay
Infants move through stages that allow them to make increasing varieties of sounds such as cooing,
babbling, laughing, and advanced babbling. Understanding infants sound production is very important
because use sounds to communicate. Language is taught as conversation. In order to be
developmentally appropriate for infants, the environment for infants, cognitive, language, and literacy
development the caregiver need to have specific ways to talk. The caregiver need to talk a lot to the
infants and use a wide vocabulary. When talking, give the infants choices and ask them about things.
Interaction with infants is the basis for cognitive development. Infants need to interact with objects
and people. Interacting with objects and people will help them explore and add on to their
understanding of the world. To encourage words in older infants give then experiences and objects to

  • 2. The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis 1. Cognitive anthropology emerged in the 1960s and is concerned with folk taxonomies and semantic domains as they are practiced in ethnolinguistics and by ethnoscientists in the New Ethnography. The New Ethnography is a name for cognitive anthropology known for investigative techniques devised by Harold Conklin, Charles Frake, and Ward Goodenough .Cognitive anthropology s theoretical orientation was emic (the insider point of view, which is different from etic or the outsider point of view). Cognitive anthropology is rooted in both Boasian cultural relativism and anthropological linguistics as well as cognitive processes. One major precursor for cognitive anthropology was the Sapir Whorf Hypothesis. The Sapir Whorf Hypothesis was shaped by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf and states that languages classify experiences differently. Other than Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf, Kenneth Pike (a linguist) was influential on cognitive anthropology. He contrasted emic with etic and made the analogy between phonemics, which is the linguistic meaning created by sounds, and phonetics, which is the linguistic sounds that create meaning. The other major figures of cognitive anthropology include Ward Goodenough, Charles Frake, Harold Conklin, Roy D Andrade, Floyd Lounsbury, Stephen Levinson, and Susan Weller. ... In addition to ethnolinguistics there s the New Ethnography, semantic domain (a mental domain of cultural meaning that is the focus of inquiry in cognitive anthropology), componential analysis (research technique used to generate folk taxonomies of semantic domains), and folk taxonomies (culturally conditioned maps of semantic domains). • 3. Kitchenaid Research Paper I am an 18 year old female who was born in Seattle, but was raised in Shoreline, WA. The KitchenAid mixer was bought by my parents when I was in my late teens in hopes of living a healthier lifestyle and limiting the amount of store bought foods by creating something more health conscious. It also allows me to investigate my creative side and put it to valuable use. Few people besides my family know to the certain extent how much I like to be artistic and cook/bake. Nevertheless, this object could potentially be misinterpreted due to societal norms of the traditional roles between a male and a female. This hefty metal mixer is similar to hand mixers except the fact that the KitchenAid will do majority of the work for you. The artifact has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just looking at it, the object is a neutral color that isn t eye catching, but at the same time it isn t dull or a sore sight to see. While people may assume it would belong to a female it would be difficult to identify its owner by simply looking at the mixer alone since it is unisex. I preferred this color of a light charcoal gray with a hint of silver over the bright fire engine red that was also available. Others may automatically gender this object towards a female because the object is a household item that is categorized as something more feminine than masculine. However, people might make assumptions that I am more of a homebody, but once you get to know me I am actually talkative. They may also assume that I m an introvert that wants to be alone most of the time. In the beginning, I am more closed off and anxious in certain situations, but once I get more comfortable with my surroundings I begin to open up. That is just simply my personality. While I do stay at home, I love the outdoors and traveling to new and different places to grasp an understanding and appreciation of their culture. Even the little things, I will go outside and spend time with my friends and family any chance I get especially ever since college started and my life has been hectic. Everyone will have their own opinions and assumptions about certain topics, but as long as they communicate their views in a respected manner it will allow both parties to express their thoughts in a civilized and non judgemental ... • 4. The Great Depression Essay The Causes of the Great Depression The cause of the Great Depression has been debated for many years. The actual cause of the Great Depression is a multitude of factors, there was no single cause. Several reasons for the Great Depression were supply and demand, the banking system, wages of workers, success and failure of business, government policy, excessive speculation in the stock market and the unequal distribution of wealth between the rich and the middle class. While there are many theories to what caused the Great Depression; all of these factors played a role in the Great Depression. The European nations industry had been devastated during the war and they relied on the United States for most goods. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was still a major gap in income of the rich and middle class. The top 0.1% of Americans in 1929 had a combined income equal to the bottom 42% of Americans, while 80% of the people had no savings at all (McElvaine 38). The average income for the farmer was only $273 compared to the average national income of $750 (McElvaine 21). By 1929 the productivity of the American industry had risen 43 percent while the wages only increase 8 percent (McElvaine 39). The American worker had enjoyed the 1920s as an era that was filled with new inventions, the radio, automobile, electric irons, and refrigerators were in every home. The average American worker could not afford to buy these items, but they could if they made small weekly or monthly payments. Convincing Americans to go against traditional values was difficult, but the advertising industry convinced them they could (McElvaine 41). The average worker in America was living in poverty, making about $24.76 a week. Most Americans did not have much money to loose when the stock market crashed; they had no savings and no investments. The people who lost the most were the wealthy investors (McElvaine 17). Speculation in the 1920 s caused many to invest money they did not have. The stock market was a Bull Market in the 1920s, it seemed that it would never end. Hoping to get rich, people from all walks of life were buying up stocks. The boom ... • 5. Government Control Gun Control The second part of reforming the Republican Party involves enacting stricter gun regulations to decrease the amount of gun violence in the United States. The official policy from the Republican platform believes that all law abiding citizens should have the right to own guns (2016 Republican Party Platform). However, recent mass shootings in California and Texas has called into question on whether the regulations that are in place are enough, or if there should be tougher background checks and restrictions on guns. The Republican Party s current stance on these recent shootings has caused a massive backlash from the media and the public, which is resulting in a rapid decrease in popularity. The American public is dismayed when they turn on the news and see reports of another mass shooting causing unnecessary deaths because of gun violence and Republican politicians are attacked on the media for not taking the necessary action of stricter gun regulations. However, with this new stance the Republicans will now support more detailed background checks and restrict the type of guns that can be owned by regular citizens. This will be heavily supported by most liberal groups but disapproved by the almost all conservative groups. Groups like the Solid Liberals, Faith and Family Left, and the Next Generation Left believe that the government controlling gun ownership should be implemented due to the increase of mass shootings. • 6. Failures of Blockbuster Essay Blockbuster Incorporation Blockbuster was the largest movie rental chain in the Movies industry around the world (Biesada a). According to Rourke, Rothburd and Stansell (2006), Blockbuster mainly focused on providing in home rental, retail movie, and game entertainment . It created 9,100 video stores and provided services to almost three million of customers in America and 24 other countries (p. 74). In 2010, the company filed for bankruptcy since it failed to adapt new technology in their strategies, and was sold to satellite TV service provider DISH Network in 2011 (Biesada b). Based on the Form 10 K (2010), Blockbuster stated that: Our level of indebtedness may make it more difficult for us to pay our debts as they become due and more necessary for us to divert our cash flow from operations to debt service payments (p. 22). At the end of 2009, their long term debt went up to 855.9 million of dollars (Form 10 K, p.40). One of the factors that negatively affected Blockbuster s income and cash flow due to their debt obligation was the payment due date. It made even more difficult for Blockbuster to pay off the debts when the company faced economic downturns. The decrease in revenue made Blockbuster s obligation and interest higher. Due to this fact, the company had a limited fund to contribute their strategy and operation. While their revenue decreased and debt increased, Blockbuster gradually lost their ability to remain the war price as low as others. The company ended up going bankrupt. The first failure of Blockbuster s strategies, which lead it to bankruptcy, was the negative relationship with their consumers. While Netflix s chief executive, Reed Hastings, recognized the technology had been grown rapidly and would change the transmission of movie rental industry, Blockbuster s CEO, James Keyes, believed that consumers would still prefer to the brick and mortar rental structure. Thus, Keyes planned to focus on expanding Blockbuster s stores into various departments ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Violence In Battle Royale The Japanese film Battle Royale is named of the most controversial films in cinema history. If not that, it is definitely still to this day an important film to talk about. The film received major backlash from the people of Japan and the Japanese government; the film did not have a worldwide theatrical release when it first came out in 2000. The main problem with the film was not because of the violence. Japanese films when Battle Royale came out were known for how graphic they were. People did not like the fact that children no older than sixteen were the subject matter in a highly violent film. Not only that but the children were in fact intensely killing each other. The film s main plot was based on a book of the same name by Japanese writer Koushun Takami. The story is about a group of middle school students that go on a field trip only to realize they have been picked for the year s Battle Royale . The students are each given supplies and a random weapon. They are told to kill each other over a span of three days with only one survivor at the end. • 8. Grafting of the Bone Bone grafting is performed to restore bone that has been lost due to injury, trauma, or disease. Injury may cause haematoma and bleeding from adjacent structures to occur. Haematoma is clotting of blood that occur in any specific region such as around the broken bone ends. This event is localized. Two ends involved are proximal and distal bone end which is the medium for osteonal healing (ossification) to occur. Ossification is the process of bone formation that is usually beginning at particular centers in each prospective bone and involving the activities of species osteoblasts that segregate and deposit inorganic bone substance about themselves (Webster, 2013). To form fracture callus, hyaline cartilage and woven bone has to be formed first. In order this to happen, chondroblasts and osteoblasts will arise from periosteum of each ends respectively. After that, fracture callus will undergo the process of bone subtitution, followed with endochondral ossification, resulting in production of lamellar bone. Final remodelling of the bone is completed by deposition of compact bone by osteoblasts in resorption pits prepared by the osteoclasts (Gaston and Simpson, 2007). This natural osteonal healing would be done well if and only if these four prerequisites are active. Firstly, cells with active osteogenic potential. Secondly, medium which has active osteoconductive matrix. Thirdly, medium with an active osteoconductive stimulus. Lastly, a mechanically active and stable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This program is intended to increase ridership by making access to bicycle storage more secure, which will enable people to ride their bikes to the bus stations and commute on public transportation. Before this pilot program was conceived, commuters needed to ride their bicycles to transit stations, lock them up on an unattended rack at the stations or bring them on the bus and store them at their end destinations. Many people do not work in buildings with secure bike storage and theft at the unattended and exposed racks is a concern for riders because bicycles cost hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars. Transit staff believes this cumbersome and unsecure process deters bicycle riders from utilizing public transit during their commutes. As a remedy, this project entails building a large secure room with racks for bicycle storage onto transit stations. The rooms will be climate controlled with HVAC systems, security cameras, Wi Fi access, and have a controlled entry. Nancy s responsibilities in creating this program included the development of the software that enables customers to register for this program and use their existing go to cards as a way to access the bike storage area. Then, dragging myself from the bed, I walked to the window and threw open the curtains. The wide open space of the New Mexico high desert stared back blankly at me. The cobalt blue skies, peach colored Sandia Mountains and endless waves of sagebrush and juniper stood in stark contrast to my dreamscape. For the past eight years, my first view of the day was this one. But today was different. Today, I was going home. I grew up in Dublin in the 1970s. My parents were country people and my accent was definitely not the same as my sundry schoolyard friends and associates. It still had too much of the country about it. Of course, in the country, people could only hear the harsh ring of the Dublin accent that I was slowly picking up. So I was never fully accepted there either other than as somewhat of a curiosity. A great division has always existed between Dubliners and the rest of the country. Even the lowliest of the Dublin low consider themselves eminently superior to their poor, unrefined bog dwelling cousins. The simple fact is that because they are lucky enough to hail from Dublin, they are therefore born with an innate superiority. Alas for them, it is a massive exercise in self deception. To my country born brethren, this is no great new discovery. My memories of childhood are now, of course, colored by my later experiences. Our neighborhood was a fairly new working class suburb on the outer edges of the northside of Dublin. I see now how monochrome and homogenous the society around me was at that time. Hence, there are no right or wrong theories, purely just diverse perceptions. The trait theory of leadership believes that leaders are born and not made. This theory claims that leadership is inherited, and great leaders are born with natural leadership traits. Zaccaro, S. J. • 30. Medi A Powerful Tool Of Communication Essay Media, being the most powerful tool of communication there is, influence societies in many ways. In fact the hypodermic needle theory states that passive audiences are directly influenced by media. On the other hand, from a Marxist perspective, one can argue the opposite that it is the audiences who influence the information which is produced via the media. In this essay this group assessed and contrasted the media of three countries namely Singapore, Jamaica and Bolivia in relation to their respective economy, society, values and political system. These three countries differ gravely in terms of their cultures, norms economic activities, religions and even social ills etc and yet despite these differences, they all share one thing in common media coverage. In addition, each country has rules and regulations geared towards the protection of journalists although sometimes such are not enforced fully. Bolivia is named after Venezuelan born liberator Simon Bolivar and boarders with five countries namely Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Peru. Bolivar is unique in that it has two capital La Paz (administrative) and Sucre (constitutional). With a population of an estimated population of over 10 million people in this South American country, there are nearly 200 privately owned television stations, more than 480 radio stations, eight (8) national newspapers as well as many local ones. Analysis Of Riverine By Alice Hoffman The story Riverine has a lot of great details and interesting quotes that may stick out to a read and make you wanna continue reading until you finish the whole story. The key thing that stood out to me early in this book was the quote from Alice Hoffman s Being an outsider is the one thing we all have in common. The reason for it is because it is completely true not matter what you do in your life now or in the future you will always be an outsider from time to time depending on different situations. The narrator of the story feels like an outsider from different times in the story because she feels perhaps she can not fit in into anything going on around her. • 32. Essay On How To Shoot A Baseball Bat One of the hardest things to do for nearly any athlete is to hit a baseball. Some of the greatest sports heroes ever, couldn t but the bat on the ball no matter how hard they tried. Even players talented enough to make it professionally, have an on base success rate of less than 33%. Hitting a baseball is difficult, but consistent contact can be made if you swing properly. Here are some three tips on how to swing a baseball bat correctly, great suggestions for any level of competition. Solid Foundation A good baseball swing starts with your base. You need a good foundation to productively make contact with a baseball. When your foundation is unstable, your swing will be erratic; as well will be the results. Feet are spaced approximately twice the width of your hips, with slightly bent knees and your body weight shifted towards the balls of your feet. Open Your Hips This is one of the more difficult aspects of properly swinging at a baseball. When your hips open to soon, you will be behind the pitch. Opening your hips too early will cause you to swing over the ball, or be too far out in front. Rotating your hips at precisely the exact instant the bat makes contact with the ball is how to generate the most power from your swing. The most accomplished hitters refer to this concept, as launching your hips. The stance and hip rotation are where a hitter s power is generated. Can t Hit What You Can t See Tracking the ball is one aspect of hitting a baseball. It cannot stop at any point during your swing. If your eyes drift, so will your head. When you pull your head off the ball, you will compromise your swing. Most of the time you ll miss the pitch completely, or at best make poor contact. To keep you head on the ball, never take your eyes off the ball. The best hitters profess to actually seeing the ball make contact with that bat. Good hitters insist, you cannot hit what you cannot see, so focus on the ball to help keep your head ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Lactase Experiment The results of the experiment vary from what is reported by previous studies (Curry, 2013, Enattah et al., 2002, Tishkoff, 2007). The experiment was conducted on students currently in the Biology 225 course in Schenectady, NY. The class was primarily composed of individuals whom are descendants of Europe. Therefore, an assumption was made that by in large, the percentage of lactase persistent in the class that was expected was going to be near 95% (Curry, 2013). However, such a high percentage was not found. Of the class, only 49.3% of individuals were determined to possess a genotype that results in a phenotype of lactase persistence. Conversely, 40.8% of the class was found to carry the genotype lct/lct which results in the phenotype of lactase non persistence. Therefore, the results are nearly 50% off from what we expected initially. This could be for numerous reasons, but perhaps the assumption should not have been made. The results fit much better when compared to the world average occurrence of lactase persistence. Curry notes that out of all individuals over the age of 8 years old, only 35% still possess the ability to digest and breakdown the lactose in dairy products (2013). The results do fit closer to the world average, therefore indicating that the assumption may have been wrong, the results of the experiment still do not necessarily indicate whether the total population of students in the Spring 2016 Biology 225 class fits the societal model where there is a ... It is very important to be fired up of course not all the time but every now and then is fine. It gets your blood pumping and your being energetic so it is healthy for kids to cheer.
