Reflection On Thomas Fellow And Reentko Concert
I saw Thomas Fellow and Reentko Dirks at Loyola Marymount University on March 25th. One thing
that I learned from the concert was that guitar is really something that brings people together because
there were quite a lot of people in attendance. I observed that both guitarists never really looked at
their music sheets when they played. They seem to have memorized the pieces that they were playing
and were playing off muscle memory, which is incredible. My impression of the concert was that it
was excellent. I really enjoyed it because there were a lot of different songs that were played with
different melodies. The first song that the duo played together called Prometheus was really well done
and the duo displayed great chemistry together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He played a lot of soothing music compared to Prometheus, which I really liked. I thought it was also
incredible that he had another performance with the quartet right afterwards and already played
another show before he played at 3pm. Both guitarists made different types of sounds with their foot
and guitar such as tapping the guitar to create a non string sound. I thought that their stage presence
was really good because they had me engaged the whole time and really listen to their performance.
Additionally, I like how after every song the guitarists would talk a little bit about the history of the
song and how it came to be. It was especially interesting to hear how certain songs were made and the
inspiration behind them. Overall, I really enjoyed going to a classical guitar concert because I ve never
been to one and it was definitely a different and new experience for

The United States Tax System and Flat Tax Essay
The United States Tax System and Flat Tax
The United States tax system is in complete disarray. Republicans and Democrats agree that the
current tax code is complex, unfair, and costly. The income tax system is so complex; the IRS
publishes 480 tax forms and 280 forms to explain the 480 forms (Armey 1). The main reason the tax
system is so complex is because of the special preferences such as deductions and tax credits.
Complexity in the current tax system forces Americans to spend 5.4 billion hours complying with the
tax code, which is more time than it takes to manufacture every car, truck and van produced in the
United States (Armey 1). Time is not the only thing that is lost with the current tax system; Americans
also lose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The American people are in the presence of the highest tax burden in American history; taxes
represent a larger share of the U.S. economy than ever before (Armey 2). After World War II, the
average family sent only about three percent of its income to Washington. The same family today
gives 24 percent of its income to the federal tax collector (Mitchell 1, 9). Once state and local taxes
are added to the federal take, taxes make up the biggest slice of the average family s budget. As Daniel
Mitchell of the Heritage Foundation shows in Figure 1, the typical American family now pays more of
its budget in taxes than it spends on food, clothing, transportation and shelter combined (Mitchell 1,
10).
Policy makers have introduced a solution to the staggering proportion of taxes that Americans spend.
The flat tax, based on an idea developed by Professors Robert Hall and Alvin Rabushka of Stanford
University to create a fair, simple, and pro growth tax system (Mitchell 1, 11). There are four basic
criteria that make up a flat tax. First is a single low rate on taxable income, the baseline for taxable
income would be raised to a certain amount dictated by a personal exemption. Second is simplicity, all
Americans would fill out the same postcard sized form to pay their taxes. Third is the reduction or
elimination of deductions, credits, and exemptions, depending

1. Historical Background
Until the 1970s, tourism was not regarded as an important economic activity in Malaysia. The Tourism
Development Corporation of Malaysia (TDC) was set up in 1972, with the responsibility to act as a
development authority, but the sector was given a low priority. Dut partly to limited financial
allocations, TDC faced constraints in the effective performance of its catalytic role.

Marine Corps Operations
For the science portion of my topic, I will be talking about and explaining the fundamental tools used
by the United States Marine Corps Infantry. The United States is by far one of, if not the leading
country in military technology and power. The ability to respond to situations around the world is a
huge responsibility for the Marine Corps. Utilities and equipment are an essential piece into keeping
the world s finest fighting force. A typical Marine is dressed in MCCUU (Marine Corps Combat
Utility Uniform) MARPAT, which is short for Marine Pattern. Also, heavy armor plates are issued
with vests and pouches. They are equipped with heavy duty rucksack or assault packs filled with
combat needed instruments and gear. Marines are also given an M16A4 service rifle and if an officer,
are granted a Beretta M9 handgun.633770_ts.jpg Assault Pack The military issue assault rucksack is
utilized by Marine Infantry units in the field. This specially designed pack works for long nights and
treks in most terrains. Stability and weight are fundamental when picking a pack to use and these are
specifically designed to allow the user to carry large amounts of weights for a long duration of time,

NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS,
2013 Mandatory Continuing Education Workshop
(13th 15th March 2013)
An Engineer is defined as a person whose job involves thinking out a problem and providing solution
in advance. It includes but not limited to designing and building engines, machines, roads, bridges, etc
or a person who is trained to repair and control engines. An engineer can be Electrical, Mechanical,
Civil, Materials, Electronic, Petroleum, Software, Chemical, etc. Engineers are also found in military
barracks because they design and build military structures and equipments, so they can be soldiers as

Moreover, all engineers must play a much stronger role in the public policy process to provide the
right incentives for industry and others to move on sustainable path so that engineers can be
encouraged and supported to design sustainable technology for the purpose of economic development
that benefits society in a holistic way now and in future. As Don Roberts advocates, we must become
better informed of the interdependence of environmental, economic, health and social issues, inform
others and become leaders, otherwise the agenda will be set by others who neither know the benefits
nor the limit of technology in a sustainable modern society
Sustainable economic development relies on technological change to achieve its aim but will
governments take the tough steps that are required to force radical technological innovation rather
than the technological fixes that have been evident to date? Such measures would require a long term
economic cost while industry will readjust. It would appear that so long as sustainable development is
restricted to minimal low cost adjustment that do not require value changes, institutional changes or
any sort of radical cultural adjustment, the environment will continue to be degraded

Immunization Study
Vaccines do not cause autism. Just like every other spectrum disorder, Autism is a diagnosis associated
with behavioral observations made over time and can neither be confirmed nor denied by a blood test.
After reading both the Immunization study and the Stanford Prison study, I think the article about the
Immunization study which was written by Drs. Sathyanarayana and Andrade is more damaging than
either that of the Stanford Prison study or the Wakefield Immunization study. As a parent of four
children who would ultimately receive the MMR vaccine in order to attend public school, I followed
the Wakefield case with a high level of interest. Additionally at the time the Immunization study was
published, I was employed by a multi subspecialty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The egregious sensationalism with which the findings were promoted by the media created the perfect
breeding ground for this study to be used in a myriad of ways it was not intended. As such, it is my
opinion that the greatest degree of fault which needs to be assessed with regard to the fervor with
which this study generated outcry belongs to the media. In comparison to a story of similar
significance such as the Watergate Scandal of the 1972, the lack of responsible journalism attached to
the Immunization study is the likes with which I have not seen. In this instance, science allowed the
media to dictate which direction it would pursue investigation following the publication of the
Immunization study. This, in my opinion, is almost as irresponsible as the media coverage. Further,
parents allowed themselves to be led down the proverbial rabbit hole instead of taking the time to trust
but verify . As for the public, some believed the published study, and some did not. Those that
believed went on to refuse to vaccinate their children, and the backlash has continued to be significant.
Measles cases soared to levels which were close to that of what are found in herds of animals and set
back the control of the disease by decades. There have been countless lawsuits filed, and hundreds of
thousands of dollars once designated for the research of autism were redirected towards the alternative
study of the connection between vaccination and autism. The reality of the study did not at all
determine the perception which was that the MMR vaccine was ultimately responsible for a regressive
form of autism. Sadly, I do not believe at this point, the harms are not repairable as the situation
continues to bring about enormous debate. Hopefully we can learn from this to be less

There are distinctions within the broad line of issues regarding both indemnity and non indemnity
insurance. Using life insurance as an example of non indemnity insurance would also consider other
value insurance such as personal accident and critical illness.
In non indemnity the list of issues include group insurance, key employee insurance or issues of
natural affection, eg, a grandmother will not be able to obtain insurance on the life of her grandson.
Equally if insurable interest is removed, this may open up wager type policies or taking out insurance
on a stranger or more bizarrely celebrities. In indemnity insurance, if insurable interest is removed,
there may be odds with statute such as Marine Insurance and Life Assurance Acts.
Within the debate is the argument whether insurable interest is required at all. Behind this debate is the
definition of insurance which separates insurance contracts from those of gaming and the need to
define due to the tax requirements being different for each. From the case Prudential Insurance V
IRC[13], Mr Justice Channell stated his definition of insurance:
The remaining essential is... that the insurance must be against something. A contract which would
otherwise be a mere wager may become an insurance by reason of the assured having an interest in the
subject matter that is to say, the uncertain event which is necessary to make the contract amount to an
insurance must be an event which is prima facie adverse

Racial Marginalization
After the First World War, Chicago just like other American cities was experiencing a huge surge in
the number of immigrants that played a significant role in its renowned neighborhoods. As the
immigrant communities trickled into Chicago, most of them settled in specific areas mostly for the
purposes of cultural integration and identity. A classic example is the members of the Africa American
community who settled in the Southern Side of Chicago and formed intense black neighborhoods
(Pacyga, Chicago, 253). Consequentially, most of the people in the ethnic neighborhoods coalesced
around each other for the purposes of social support as well as other social fears such as the glaring
problems of racism that had taken deep roots in the American society more so before the civil rights
movement had taken off. However, there has been more changes in the city such as the increased
economic marginalization that has made the largely ethnic neighborhoods to be multi ethnic as
members of other ethnic groups such as the Latinos, Mexicans and even the whites have integrated in
to the low class black neighborhoods that have eventually led to the surge in Chicago slums. There
have also been policies that have been adopted by Chicago mayoral office holders that have been
aimed at undoing the racial marginalization that had played a major factor in the setting up of various
Chicago neighborhoods. Thus, unlike in the past, the ethnic factor in the creation of neighborhoods

Charlie as the Victim of Circumstance in F. Scott Fitzgerald s Babylon Revisited The story s
protagonist, Charlie Wales, is less a victim of bad luck than of circumstance, both socio economic and
personal. Charlie does not deserve Marion s continued denial of custody of his daughter, but the story
is less about what Charlie does or does not deserve than how easily one s life can spin out of control
due to unforeseen circumstance. Marion and Charlie dislike each other on a visceral level. Marion s
feelings are not solely caused by Charlie s alcoholism and past behavior. She focuses upon Charlie a

13 14) For her, Charlie was the embodiment of that villain. Though the argument that resulted in the
incident was the fault of both parties, Marion is unwilling or unable to consider Helen an equal party
to Charlie s excesses. Marion s hatred of Charlie makes it impossible for her to impartially judge his
attempts to rebuild his life. When she questions, How long are you going to stay sober, Charlie? (p.
12) at dinner the first evening of his return, her behavior is colored by her ill feelings toward her
brother in law, but her concern for his willingness to stay sober is valid and understandable given
Charlie s past behavior and her genuine concern for Honoria s best interests. His continued separation
from Honoria is wrenching, but Marion s resistance to relinquishing custody, though partially fuelled
by her hatred of Charlie, is also motivated by her fondness for her niece. Charlie s longing for a life
with Honoria is almost palpable throughout the story. Even though he seems drawn to visit his old
haunts, he resists any temptation to fall back into his old habits. He is imprudent to leave Lincoln s
address with Alix, the barman at the Ritz, to give to Duncan Schaeffer, but Duncan is a friend from
college and the urge to see someone familiar is perhaps understandable given Charlie s loneliness.

The Atkinson And Shiffrin Modal Model Of Memory
Memory is a very crucial topic not everyone understands. We might hear an individual saying He has
a great memory, or others mentioning they have a bad memory whenever they have forgotten an
important subject. People use the term memory frequently but often not knowing its true meaning.
According to Baddeley (1999), memory is not an actual organ as the heart, the kidneys, or the liver;
instead, it consists of a network in which many systems work together, allowing us to be capable of
remembering past events and in predicting the future. Reisberg (2013) presents the Atkinson and
Shiffrin Modal Model of Memory, in which they explained that when human body receives an input, it
is received as sensory information, which travels to our short term memory (also known as working
memory) and is then processed to our long term memory (where it remains permanently). According
to Reisberg (2013) working memory includes conscious and active processing of incoming auditory as
well as visual spatial information. It also retrieves information stored from the long term memory. In
other words, it is the memory a person uses when actively working on a specific task. Moreover,
human working memory has a limited capacity; therefore, there is a magic number 7 plus or minus 2,
which demonstrates that the average capacity of words that our working memory can store is 5 to 9
items (Reisberg, 2013). Baddeley developed a model acknowledged as the Working Memory System.

How Did Tsar Nicholas II Create A Backwards Economy Of Russia
Introduction:
Unlike other countries having a democratic government, Russia was ruled by a monarchy, therefore
Nicholas II inherited the role of Tsar after his father passed away from kidney inflammation in 1894.
There were many reasons behind why Russia was considered as having a backwards economy and the
Russo Japanese War was a major setback for Russia. Bloody Sunday took place and shortly afterwards
Nicholas II was compelled to introduce the October Manifesto ... . Nicholas II
Tsar Nicholas II was a problem for the social, political and economic well being of the early Twentieth
Century Russia.
Russia s backwards economy:
Nicholas II was raised watching his father rule autocratically. He was not prepared by no means to
rule, and most likely took this as the best approach to ruling a country since it is how his father did.
Tsar Nicholas II refused to stray from what he knew, and more importantly what his father practised as

With no workers, Russia was put under pressure as this meant no transport, schools, shops and
factories were in working order. They banded together for many destructive acts such as rioting,
stealing, street performances and destroying Tsarist authoritative symbols. This was a political issue
for Russia as workers were fighting for their rights.
October Manifesto:
Nicholas II introduced the October Manifesto on the 30th of October, 1905. Once the October
Manifesto was introduced to the people, they believed he was making a step in the right direction.
This piece of paper, written by Sergey Witte, promised political reforms after ten months of strikes, a
lot of political debate and attacks of violence. Little did the people of Russia realise that this was the
Tsar Nicholas II s plan to please, however he had no intentions of acting on this or changing his ways.

Property Tax: A theoretical model
Factor mobility is a key factor for local bodies. Charles Tiebout in his seminal 1956 article put forth a
model where local bodies compete in the provision of public services. He considers a city resident
who wishes to move to the suburbs, a consumer voter , who selects a community that best reflects and
satisfies his preferences for public goods. Given that local governments have set patterns of
expenditure and revenue, the greater the number of local governments, the closer the consumer voter
may find his preferences represented.
Tiebout s model is based on the following assumptions: perfect mobility of consumer voters; their
perfect knowledge of differences between revenue and expenditure patterns and the ability to react to
these differences; many communities to choose from in which to live; no employment restrictions as
all consumer voters live on dividend income and no external economies or diseconomies in the
provision of public goods between communities. Additionally, he also defines an optimum level of
community services i.e. the number of residents for whom the bundle of services can be produced at
the lowest average cost. The relevance of this assumption

life and death that may hold more hardships for the soul yet. In line 11, the menace of the year, of
course, is the expiration of time, the end of which would mark the beginning of the journey to the

Soundtrack To Music Research Paper
Why music is the soundtrack to life
Music is interpreted differently from around the world but to me, music is motivational and inspiring.
It s a way to express emotions and a language that cannot be put into words. Music creates an avenue
for empathy and a new understanding and it is part of my lifestyle. Music always gives you company
when you are bored or in the shower. It gives a meaning and purpose to life. Music is important
because it is the key to creativity.
Many creative geniuses such as Mozart and Albert Einstein showed us that listening to and creating

enhances your blood vessel function. Other positive outcomes of music can include better memory,
helping people eat less and improved sleep quality. As well as positive physical effects there are also
positive emotional and mental effects of music. One of the most famous ones is the Mozart effect. If
somebody listens to Mozart s music they may likely have a short improvement on spatial temporal
reasoning. Spatial temporal reasoning is the ability to visualize the instruments played in a song and
the musical notation.
In conclusion, music is an important motivation for creativity and inspiration. It is a way we can
express ourselves without having to say anything, it is a hobby or a pastime.

The Transient Sublime and Mortality in “Ode to a Nightingale”

English Literature
The Transient Sublime and Mortality in Ode to a Nightingale
Composed during the most creative period in Keats s brief poetic career, Ode to a Nightingale has
long been regarded as one of the most refined works of his poetry. Previous criticism has
comprehensively explored its themes of nature, beauty and mortality, as well as its demonstration of
Keats s notion of Negative Capability. But based on my research, few critical reviews have touched
upon the point which I find clearly suggest itself in this poem: that the poet s experience here depicted
is not merely an escape into the realm of ideal beauty, but also an intoxication with the Romantic
sublime. Between the sublime and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But his pain stems not from grief, which we learn by surprise, but from an excess of happiness
occasioned by the bird s song which is too happy to be endured. This ambivalent mixture of pain and
pleasure is the characteristic mark of the sublime, which is further heightened by the sharp contrast
between the poet s painful numbness and the bird s god like rapture and freedom.
The poet then calls for wine, a beaker full of the warm South which may carry him into a state of the
sublime where identification with the nightingale and union with nature are accessible, in order to
escape the weariness, the fever, and the fret of human lives, where youth dies early and even love does
not last long. But then he changes his mind: he will fly to the nightingale not through the artificial
device of alcoholic intoxication ( Bacchus and his pards ), but through the agency of poetic
imagination ( the viewless wings of Poesy ).
For a moment the poet succeeds, exclaiming that he is already with thee . Imagination leads him into a
trance, where he loses consciousness while arriving at the climax of the sublime. In his most exalted
poetic vision, he beholds the holy lustre of the Queen Moon and her starry Fays in the tender night
sky. But soon common sense abruptly obtrudes, pulling the poet from up amid the stars down to the
earthly gloom where there is no light . As if

The Pros And Cons Of Suicide Terrorism
Suicide terrorism does not always have to be an attack on the United States from a different country
with different cultural values. Suicide terrorism can come from American citizens. More current
events are mass shootings by American citizens against their own people. One event is the attack on
Sandy Hook Elementary. This attack was where Adam Lanza started by killing his own mother, and
then moved on to Sandy Hook Elementary where he took the lives of Twenty children and six adults
(Connecticut Shootings Fast Facts, 2017, para. 2). After this act of violence, Adam Lanza committed
suicide. Another more recent mass shooting attack was the mass shooting in Las Vegas. This attack
was carried out by Stephen Paddock. Stephen Paddock, in his attack killed 58 and wounded around
500 people before taking his own life (Yan, Park, 2017). Whether suicide terrorism is being used by
domestic or foreign enemies, the message is clear. They want to hurt innocent people but at the same
time scare the rest of the American people. Also, after these attacks many political battles were
pushed. Whether it be going to war with another country, or making far stricter laws to possess a
firearm and to outlaw certain types of fire arms. These political battles have sparked many debates
among the American people. It seems with the loss of innocent lives, certain groups in America try to
use this to push their own personal views of what America should do to prevent any further acts.

Drug Abuse and the FDA Essay
Drug abuse is generally defined as the use of a drug with such frequency that the user has physical or
mental harm or it impairs social abilities. Drugs are used as pain killers to avert physical and/or
emotional pain by providing the user with a temporary escape from life s realities. Even though, they
cause different, more serious problems with only a short escape from life s agonies.
There are five different classifications (schedules) of drugs in the Controlled Substance Act of 1970.
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) choose
what substance falls into what classification. The placement of a drug on the Controlled Substances
List is based on three categories: (1) potential ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Last of the behavioral and attitude changes, drug users become furtive and secretive in everything they
do by locking their doors or always trying to keep something hidden in their phone or notebook. Their
overall behavior should change.
Some physical changes in a person who uses drugs can be very unproblematic and painless. The more
hardcore drugs, such as heroin and marijuana, will make it harder for them to answer simple,
uncomplicated questions. They will go off on tangents and cannot remember what they were talking
about before very easily, and it ll happen quite frequently. Their eyes will convert to being bloodshot,
and their speech will become indistinct and incoherent. They ll have an unusual smell on their clothing
or breath. Also, the way they dress might change into something that looks more like they do not care
about life or the way they look.
As a result of some of the drug users scarcity of money, they go out and sell illicit drugs, or they will
do anything for money to buy more drugs, such as robbery or prostitution. The illegal money they are
making is not flowing back into the government and resulting in less tax money to build better schools
and educational facilities. Also, children see these people and what they are doing, and the children
find it okay to be like them. Which puts the economy in an even worse position, than if it was just the
drug abusers. The cost of the substance abuse falls

The American Dream
John s ship finally arrived in New York and he was exhausted. He and his family had to come to
America because of the potato famine that was happening back home in Ireland. The first thing he had
to do was find a place to live at with his family; he realized that the decent houses and apartments
were out of his budget. He only had money for the crowded and unhygienic apartments, if they could
be called that. After John picked a room out, he went to go look for jobs. While he was out looking for
work, he noticed people eyeing him strangely and signs saying No Irish Need Apply . The only type of
jobs he could get were the low paying ones. But he was desperate, so he took them. The workplace
looked filthy and dangerous. John wondered if he would ever be able to move up in the economic
ladder, he believed in the American Dream . Unfortunately, he never did because if he asked for a
raise, he would be fired immediately because other immigrants would have taken the job with lower
pay. This was the life of an Irish immigrant immigrating to America during the famine era. The Great
Famine forced a countless number of Irish people to immigrate to the United States, where they
suffered from poverty and discrimination. Despite all this, the Irish were able to assimilate and
reshape American culture through politics and religion. To begin with, the Irish people immigrated to
America because much of the population was suffering in Ireland. The Irish had been suffering for
centuries,

Lake Mountain Research Paper
On Sunday morning, Mum and Dad decided to bring us to toboggan at Lake Mountain. We woke up at
7:45am in the morning, got changed and started our journey to Lake Mountain. As we were driving
along Plenty Rd, we stopped at the Bundoora Hungry Jacks for breakfast. Although, the bacon egg
muffin was crispy, it didn t have the same taste as the normal muffin. Despite this, we continued our
trip to Lake Mountain. Our adventure to Lake Mountain consisted of many winding roads and narrow
roads. After two hours of driving, we reached Fernshaw and the fog was thickening but soon after, we
reached Marysville. In Marysville, we hired toboggans and snow boots from the local store. After that,
we made our way up the mountain and saw huge piles of snow along the side of the road. On the top
of the mountain, we paid a car entry of $57 and parked the car in the car park.
We changed into our ski attire and headed towards the Village , where the main toboggan slope was.
We had a few goes down the mountain and experienced many different difficulties along the way.
After 20 minutes worth of fun, we headed down to the Koala Creek. The Koala Creek was a

Breaking The Limitations In Music
Music has always been seen as a way of entertainment. Throughout many eras musicians have kept
their ways to their traditions. From instrumentation to the composition itself. Throughout the ages,
music has mostly been a set in stone factor. But since the 20th century things have begun to change.
Musicians are breaking away from the traditions of the past and reaching new areas of music.
Technology is developing to creating new sounds and instruments can change how to be played and
used. That musical styles have been developed and the compositions have altered with devices that
can record and playback music in your own home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With his developments, the music world has heard a new sound. One of his major creations in music is
in fact a wire recorder. This machine may not seem like much but it has been able record then
playback music in your own home without the instruments themselves. This has truly become a great
breakthrough instead of needing a musician in the household to keep smaller gatherings entertained.
Now they can be entertained with only themselves. As said by brindle: (One of the first electronic
music compositions John Cage s Imaginary Landscape No. 1 (1939) had oscillator frequencies
recorded on two 78 r.p.m. gramophone records, but normally such a system was too expensive and
inflexible to be practicable.) It took a world war to produce what was almost the right instrument the
wire recorder which was later replaced by the tape recorder, so manipulated, made permanent, or
discarded, with incredible ease and at negligible cost. Once the tape recorder was perfected (about
1950), and its potentialities fully realized, other electronic sound equipment (either already existing or
suitably modified) could be assembled to form the first electronic music studio (99, Brindle). This
development of the Wire recorder has lead to such great historical developments. From the wire
recorder lead to the tape recorder and soon music was able to be taken anywhere anyone wished it to
be. The development of the wire recorder was originally made by John Cage

Risk Of Skin Cancer In Tanning Beds
Sharon Miller is the author of this article and is part of FDA. In this article she discusses how each
type of uv rays damage the skin and which uv ray is used in tanning beds. This is relevant to my topic
because it demonstrates the risk of skin cancer. Many people think tanning gives them a ¨healthy¨
glow, but in reality a tan is a sign on skin damage. UV B rays burn the top layer of skin resulting in a
sunburn in most cases. UV A rays burn into a deeper layer of the skin causing a rash to appear.
Tanning beds emit UV B rays and UV A rays, which is why you tend to get a sunburn before turning
dark. The UV B rays cause your body to emit more melanin, which is a pigment that darkens the skin.
This is why we get tan in the summer whether it

A.Satirical Writing
Satire is the use of humor, irony, or ridicule to show foolishness in humans and expose people s
stupidity.
It becomes effective when it takes whatever it is criticizing to a point where the reader can change
their mind about issues by learning about it from a comedic perspective.
TV shows/ Movies that use satire
◦South Park
◦The Office
◦SNL
◦Seinfeld
◦Mean Girls
◦Napoleon Dynamite

The difference between satire and sarcasm is that satire is usually prepared and lengthy, while sarcasm
is off the cuff and short. Sarcasm is a rhetorical device and satire is a form of genre.

How The Hunger Games and Brave New World are the same:
◦They are both in the future
◦They have a superior group of people
◦Their society is separated into groups depending on their skill level
How The Hunger Games and Brave New World are different:

Jewish Immigration In Argentina Essay
Argentina, as the second largest country in Latin America, contains approximately 42 million
individuals. Containing over 181,000 Jews, Argentina obtains the largest Jewish community in the
region. From unrestricted immigration policies to the quartering of Nazi criminals in Argentina, there
had been a wide spectrum of events that Argentina s Jews have endured. They have persevered
through both seasons of coexistence and seasons of heightened anti Semitism prejudice,
discrimination and hatred of Jews as a national, ethnic, religious or racial group. It all began in 1492
when Father Tomas de Torquemada expelled all Jews from Spain due to the fear of Judaism
influencing new Christian converts in Spain. Facing religious oppression, they were forced to flee, and
many consequently landed in Argentina. These secret Jews (also known as conversos) fused into the
Argentine population, many forsaking Judaism altogether, leaving a small amount of Jews left in
Argentina by the mid 1800 s. In 1810, President Bernardino Rivadavia set a foundation of freedom
and respect for Jews by implementing policies promoting liberated immigration and recognition of
human rights; he befittingly annulled the Inquisition which was formally depriving Jews of their
freedom. With this tolerant environment came another influx of Jewish immigration .The third ...

Connectivity And Its Discontent By Sherry Turkle
All advantages have corresponding disadvantages. Sherry Turkle s essay Connectivity and its
Discontents address her stance towards technological communication. Throughout her essay, she
provides examples that illustrate how the world is consistently depending on technology for
communication. Turkle s opinion towards the issue is that, she believes we ll eventually sacrifice
communication for mere connection. Her examples make the reader consider that technological
communication leads to human beings losing intensity in communication in both personal and
professional situations because of distraction and convenience. The twenty first century widely
introduced a variety technological advancements which made people rely often on the technology.
Thinking back to her opinion towards the issue I would agree with the idea that humans are becoming
too attached to technology, but I would disagree that technology draws a wedge between people.
Having an environment that is advancing daily in technology makes communication everyday easier
for people. It expanse the availability for communication for the people who are in different countries,
gives them the ability to communicate in the comfort of their own home. For an instant, my mother

The Effectiveness of Composting in Protecting the...
As of recently, there has been an ever growing buzz regarding the environment and being sustainable,
and we need to embrace this movement. As the population grows, our demands on Earth s resources

However, composting also has many other substantial environmental benefits. Composting is a very
efficient sustainable process that achieves its goal of being environmentally friendly by enriching soil,
remediating contaminated soil, and preventing pollution.
One of the main environmental benefits of compost is that it enriches the soil. The compost helps bind
the sand, silt, and clay particles in the soil together, resulting in improved storage capacity for
nutrients and water (Davies 41). This also results in a secondary benefit less water is needed to water
plants fertilized by compost. Compost is also very nutrient rich, so rich that gardeners commonly refer
to it as black gold ( Evanston... 3). It improves soil fertility as the composting process encourages the
growth of beneficial bacteria and fungi, which in turn break down organic matter to create humus, a
rich nutrient filled material. Kate Stewart, a student at Northwestern University and member of
GREEN House, has had extended experience with using compost to enrich poor Texas soil and says
that adding rich compost can make a huge difference... this means we can garden. This ability of
compost to enrich infertile soil is a profound environmental benefit.
Another important environmental impact of composting is its ability to remediate contaminated soil.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the composting process can absorb odors and

What Are The Benefits Of African American Studies
There are multiple factors that differentiate the history and experience of African Americans from
those of Asian, Hispanic and Native Americans. First African Americans were involuntary immigrated
to the United States by traders looking to exploit them as a commodity to promote slavery. Unlike
African Americans most ethnic groups immigrated here voluntary for economic and political freedom.
Also while some of these groups were discriminated against their was a intensive effort to erase
African culture from the minds of African Americans. Forcing them to abandon their language,
history, culture and ancestral ties, to the europeans they were nothing, but a piece of property. Then
after their past had been striped from them, African Americans were contintually taken advantage by
whites to stay above them and not allow them to move up society. Even social reform that occurred
before, during and after the Civil Rights movement still haven t allowed for significant changes. This
coordinated effort has created a lingering legacy that has negatively affected the psyche and social

Why Do Jewish Holidays
When people think of holidays they would think Christmas or thanksgiving. But with the Jewish
religion they celebrate holidays a little bit different than most people. With the Jewish cultural they
celebrate Shabbat, Passover, You Kippur, Sukkot, and Hanukkah.
The Shabbat is considered the most important of all Jewish holidays. It is the day of rest and weekly
observance of God s completion of creation. Shabbat starts on a Friday night an hour before sunset, it
lasts for 25 hour until sunset on Saturday night. This holiday is one of the way the Jewish people
connect with Yahweh because these people will make some of the tuitional meal that comes with this
holiday. Also, they will make the setting special because they are celebration their god ... Show more

It is the most solemn day of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement offers an
entire day devoted to self examination. Many spend the day in synagogue devoted to prayer and study
while abstaining from food and drink. The goal is to begin the New Year with a clean slate, which can
be good for many of the Jews who do bad things and need a new start at life.
And after that would come Sukkot. This seven day festival celebrates the fall harvest and also
commemorates the time when the Hebrews dwelt in the Sinai wilderness on their way to the Promised
land of Israel, which is important for the Jewish people because they don t want to end up in what they
called pit of fire. Also, the holiday is celebrated by building (and then dwelling in) ceremonial huts
called Sukkot.
Finally comes Hanukkah. This beloved eight day winter festival celebrates the miracle of a small cruse
of oil when it burned for eight days, instead of only one. It also celebrates the military victory of the
Jewish Maccabees over the powerful Syrian Greek army in 167 BCE. The victory was followed by a
rededication(Hanukkah) of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. It is from this act that the holiday gets its
name, which I find very interesting because of something so small created a holiday. But with
Christian religion it would be Christmas and its only celebrated one day. The day where Mary had

The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr. Hyde
Robert Louis Stevenson, a Scottish author, wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It is a
horror and a science fiction book. The story took place in London, England, during the Victorian era.
Mr. Utterson knew something was wrong when his cousin Richard Enfield told him of Mr. Edward
Hyde, an ugly, cruel man. Richard Enfield told him he witnessed a man named Mr. Hyde mercilessly
tramping on a young girl, and to avoid getting in trouble with the authorities, he gave the girl s family
a cheque of a hundred Pounds, which was signed by none other than Mr. Utterson s client and good
friend Dr. Jekyll. Mr. Utterson was familiar with Mr. Hyde s name because Dr. Jekyll noted Mr. Hyde
as the main beneficiary in his will. Although Mr. Utterson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Utterson read Dr. Jekyll s letter. Dr. Jekyll wrote how he did want to be good, but at other times
wanted to commit evil. His plan was to split two natures, one good and the other bad, into two
different men. However the portion, which he made, only made him wicked and good at the same
time. He would transform into Mr. Hyde, when he would take the portion and transform back to his
old self, when he would take the portion again. Dr. Jekyll wrote his conscious wasn t troubled at first
because as Dr. Jekyll, the people still respected him. However he did feel very remorseful before he
murdered Sir Danvers Carew, whom Dr. Jekyll killed after two months of abstinence of transforming
into Mr. Hyde. After a series of events, included the where Dr. Jekyll transformed into Mr. Hyde at a

Napoleon s Return to France Essay
Napoleon returned to home to France with only about 10% of his Army still alive. He lost most of his
soldiers during the Great White Death, which is one of the largest French disasters to date. Since all
the coalition allies knew he was in trouble, they decided to follow him and take him out while he was
down and burned out. This is when he decided to give himself up and be exiled to Elba with 1000
guards. Before he left though, he promised his men that he, ... would return when the flowers
bloomed. And that was a promise that Napoleon kept. When he returned to France he came face to
face with Marshal Nay but as an enemy and not a friend. Marshal Nay had started working for the new

Unfortunately, for Napoleon there was two days of rain that mad this particular area very muddy.
Napoleons forces where divided since Grouchy was keeping a close eye on Blucher. If only they
would have known that he should have stayed with Napoleon they would have won Waterloo instead
it was a drawn out battle that caused a lot of bloodshed on La Belle Alliance Ridge. Waterloo didn t
get started till 11:35 am because the ground was too muddy to get his cannons into place. Once he did
get his cannons into place he decided he wanted to take Hougomont. Hougomont became a huge
headache to Napoleon because he would constantly try to take it and never did during the entire battle.
Picton ordered Major General William Ponsoby, who led the Scots Grays, to attack the French. Every
English boy would have wanted to be one of those brave men at the time. They collided with the
French lancers and they were annihilated. The Scots Grays tried to ever turn back but not one of them
survived. While this was going on, around 1:45 pm, Picton was shot in the head, through his top hat.
Picton was not dressed in his usual military uniform because Napoleon had attacked his train and stole
his gear so all he had to wear was a black suit and top hat. That particular hat is on display in a
museum at waterloo. A wind storm begin and actually started making Wellington a little nervous. He
said give me Blucher or give me night.

Essay The Rites of Spring by Modris Eksteins
Modris Eksteins presented a tour de force interpretation of the political, social and cultural climate of
the early twentieth century. His sources were not merely the more traditional sources of the historian:
political, military and economic accounts; rather, he drew from the rich, heady brew of art, music,
dance, literature and philosophy as well. Eksteins examined ways in which life influenced, imitated,
and even became art. Eksteins argues that life and art, as well as death, became so intermeshed as to
be indistinguishable from one another. The title of the book, The Rites of Spring, and the plunge into
the world of the Ballet Russe in the first chapter, made clear that Eksteins intended to use Stravinsky s
ballet as an image for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Germany was, relatively speaking, a new nation; new as a single nation. Russian contributions to
music and dance were new; they did not date back centuries like in England, France, Germany and
Italy. Politically, Germany found herself in a similar situation. She was new and wanted to make her
place among the great powers; she saw herself as the innovator, a progressive spirit, as opposed to
wearied France and conservative Britain. Eksteins contends that because Germans saw themselves as
the agent of (inevitable) progress, they felt their role in The Great War was defensive rather than
aggressive. To attack Germany was to attack the future. This belief that they must defend their
homeland from those who would deny the future, sustained the Germans during and after the war, and
into the next one. Eksteins realized that Hitler was not an anomaly; Hitler touched a sympathetic chord
within the Germans. Although Eksteins discussed that any group may want to find scapegoats when
things go wrong, citing the tendencies of the French to look beyond themselves for explanations of
failure, he implies that, in Germany, finding scapegoats produced such horrific results because
preexisting sentiments of anti Semitism combined with the violence and power of Nazism. His
depiction of the vibrant and dynamic, pep rally #8255; mentality with its appeal to

The Samurai s Garden
In every walk with nature one receives far more than one seeks. The Samurai s Garden is a book that
encompasses the beauty and importance of the natural world through many individuals experiences.
Tsukiyama expresses the belief that humans need help from an outside force, so that they can be
relieved from their grief and misery. In the novel, The Samurai s Garden, Gail Tsukiyama conveys the
theme that in order to heal, people need nature; she accomplishes this through her use of Sachi, Matsu,
and Stephen. Sachi is one of the most compassionate, yet strong characters in the novel. Throughout
her life she has endured shame, loss of loved ones, and internal pain, but everyday she chooses reality
and exists among all this turmoil. However, her pain is alleviated because of the garden she so
tenderly cares for. This small piece of nature gives her the strength to go on and slowly heals her from
the burdening sorrows she carries around. Tsukiyama states, I could see in her face, what I had seen a
hundred times in Matsu s when he worked in his garden: a perfect calm (127). After Kenzo commits
suicide due to finding out about Matsu and Sachi s relationship, Sachi feels desolate and ... Show more

Stephen is different in the way that nature not only cures him spiritually, but also physically. Tarumi s
fresh air and dry climate treats his tuberculosis, but also his inner being. Tsukiyama states, As I
relaxed, a sense of freedom emerged which had been buried under my illness (14). Stephen gains
independence and latitude because of the ocean as well as Matsu s garden. Whenever a loss strikes
him, he feels as if he could always come back to the tranquility of nature and find his composure once
again. Nature s influence on Stephen allows him to heal from not only his disease, but also tragic

Microbes And The Environment
Microbes And The Environment
When you pick up a handful of soil from outside you are not only picking up soil you are picking up a
handful of microbes. In that one handful there are many different varieties of living microbes, they
range from algae, fungi, bacteria and many more. A single teaspoon of that soil contains over
1,000,000,000 bacteria, about 120,000 fungi and 25,000 algae. (Microbe World) They are found
everywhere that you can think of on Earth, this includes the ground, air, plants and animals. Microbes
are one of the oldest living things on Earth they have been around for billion of years and continue to
live here under any conditions because they are constantly adapting to the environment that they live
in. These environments range from the boiling waters of hot springs in Yellowstone National Park to
the freezing temperatures of Antarctica. (Microbe World) The microbes that exist in our world are not
all bad they have many very helpful traits that can be observed every day .Microbes just like bacteria
and fungi break down complex pollutants into simpler substances to gain energy and nutrients by the
process called biodegradation. What biodegradation means is the chemical dissolution of materials by
bacteria or other biological means. Although often conflated, biodegradable is distinct in meaning
from compostable. (Biodegradation.) Microbes are found naturally in the world and they are also used
by humans for important reasons. For example they

Persuasive Essay On Women s Rights Movement
The road to equality has been long and winding for the American woman, due to the ingrained social
standards (expectations and limitations) that have been inflicted upon women for centuries. Had it not
been for women like Margaret Sanger and countless others, the modern American woman might still
be in such a profound state of subservience and suppressed freedoms. Today there are outlets for
women to take control in all spheres, where once that was deemed unacceptable. But, some of these
outlets are being closed off by the federal government, among them being Planned Parenthood and
politicians are attacking the idea of a woman taking charge of her reproductive health in favor of a
society that refuses to accommodate a woman s right to choose. This limitation violates her 1st
amendment rights a step that the first American feminists would strongly oppose. The Women s Rights
Movement came to the forefront of the minds of Americans in the early 20th century during the
Progressive era, a time of social and political activism. One of the most notable achievements of this
movement was the ratification of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote. While
giving women that much political power was considered controversial at the time, it is now part of the
political norm in America as well as other Western countries. The 19th amendment was only
considered controversial during its inaugural period, but that is not the case for the other
accomplishments of the 20th

The Role Of Concussions In Youth Sports
The popularity of soccer has continued to increase year after year due to large events such as the
World Cup and the Euro Cup. Now, fans are demanding more of a show rather than just a simple
game. Due to this demand, players have been looking for different ways to up the ante, most
specifically the way goals are scored. It has been more common to see goals scored off bicycle kicks
and headers leading to an increase of injuries such as concussions due to heading. As these types of
injuries are becoming more common, and has recently been seen in younger players as well, the
question has become whether or not heading should be removed from youth soccer. In Stanley Kay s
article With concussion reform at forefront, should youth headers be nixed? from Sports Illustrated

Kay shines light on the opposition in he introduces the idea that there is a movement that has been
increasing that calls for the banning of headers from youth leagues. This is first seen when kay
introduces Dr. Robert Cantu and his studies. Dr. Cantu s research has shown how 30 percent of
concussions in soccer come from headers. Following this kay mentions how the brains and bodies of
children are still developing, meaning they are more susceptible to concussions These studies have
lead to many people to start an initiative to put an end to headers in youth leagues. Many have
followed this movement including former players such as Brandi Chastain, one of the faces for Parent
and Pros for Safer Soccer. Among the opposition another argument has been that kids look at what the
pros are doing and want to do the same, but many parents believe it is more beneficial if younger
players develop other important skills such as footwork rather than

Racism Impact On Racism
When Barack Obama s presidency was terminated in 2016, so was African American pride. Obama
served as a symbol of black honor, respect, and comfort, yet, his successor, Donald Trump, more or
less counteracts that representation. On August 15th, 2017, a group of torch yielding Neo Nazis and
white supremacists rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia, igniting fear, danger, and hate among African
Americans. Instead of condemning the racist white supremacists, President Trump announced that
there were, very fine people on both sides (Haberman, 2017). After all, according to Joe Feagin and
Eileen O Brien, Among those at the top of the white elites are U.S. presidents ... Kenneth O Reilly has
described numerous incidents that show how U.S. presidents mostly do not follow, but rather lead, the
white population on major racial issues. He shows that the comments and actions of many presidents
have operated to nurture and support the nation s racism (Feagin O Brien, 2004). Trump s dismissive
attitude might not cause any direct harm to the African American population, however, it does
facilitate racist actions and promote disturbia, ultimately making racism a prominent issue even in
today s America. To combat current discrimination, many black empowerment groups have formed,
including the Black Lives Matter movement. The movement started in 2013 when police officer
George Zimmerman shot an unarmed black teen to death and faced no consequences. A black activist

  • 2. Reflection On Thomas Fellow And Reentko Concert I saw Thomas Fellow and Reentko Dirks at Loyola Marymount University on March 25th. One thing that I learned from the concert was that guitar is really something that brings people together because there were quite a lot of people in attendance. I observed that both guitarists never really looked at their music sheets when they played. They seem to have memorized the pieces that they were playing and were playing off muscle memory, which is incredible. My impression of the concert was that it was excellent. I really enjoyed it because there were a lot of different songs that were played with different melodies. The first song that the duo played together called Prometheus was really well done and the duo displayed great chemistry together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He played a lot of soothing music compared to Prometheus, which I really liked. I thought it was also incredible that he had another performance with the quartet right afterwards and already played another show before he played at 3pm. Both guitarists made different types of sounds with their foot and guitar such as tapping the guitar to create a non string sound. I thought that their stage presence was really good because they had me engaged the whole time and really listen to their performance. Additionally, I like how after every song the guitarists would talk a little bit about the history of the song and how it came to be. It was especially interesting to hear how certain songs were made and the inspiration behind them. Overall, I really enjoyed going to a classical guitar concert because I ve never been to one and it was definitely a different and new experience for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The United States Tax System and Flat Tax Essay The United States Tax System and Flat Tax The United States tax system is in complete disarray. Republicans and Democrats agree that the current tax code is complex, unfair, and costly. The income tax system is so complex; the IRS publishes 480 tax forms and 280 forms to explain the 480 forms (Armey 1). The main reason the tax system is so complex is because of the special preferences such as deductions and tax credits. Complexity in the current tax system forces Americans to spend 5.4 billion hours complying with the tax code, which is more time than it takes to manufacture every car, truck and van produced in the United States (Armey 1). Time is not the only thing that is lost with the current tax system; Americans also lose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The American people are in the presence of the highest tax burden in American history; taxes represent a larger share of the U.S. economy than ever before (Armey 2). After World War II, the average family sent only about three percent of its income to Washington. The same family today gives 24 percent of its income to the federal tax collector (Mitchell 1, 9). Once state and local taxes are added to the federal take, taxes make up the biggest slice of the average family s budget. As Daniel Mitchell of the Heritage Foundation shows in Figure 1, the typical American family now pays more of its budget in taxes than it spends on food, clothing, transportation and shelter combined (Mitchell 1, 10). Policy makers have introduced a solution to the staggering proportion of taxes that Americans spend. The flat tax, based on an idea developed by Professors Robert Hall and Alvin Rabushka of Stanford University to create a fair, simple, and pro growth tax system (Mitchell 1, 11). There are four basic criteria that make up a flat tax. First is a single low rate on taxable income, the baseline for taxable income would be raised to a certain amount dictated by a personal exemption. Second is simplicity, all Americans would fill out the same postcard sized form to pay their taxes. Third is the reduction or elimination of deductions, credits, and exemptions, depending ... Historical Background Until the 1970s, tourism was not regarded as an important economic activity in Malaysia. The Tourism Development Corporation of Malaysia (TDC) was set up in 1972, with the responsibility to act as a development authority, but the sector was given a low priority. The United States is by far one of, if not the leading country in military technology and power. The ability to respond to situations around the world is a huge responsibility for the Marine Corps. Moreover, all engineers must play a much stronger role in the public policy process to provide the right incentives for industry and others to move on sustainable path so that engineers can be encouraged and supported to design sustainable technology for the purpose of economic development that benefits society in a holistic way now and in future. As Don Roberts advocates, we must become better informed of the interdependence of environmental, economic, health and social issues, inform others and become leaders, otherwise the agenda will be set by others who neither know the benefits nor the limit of technology in a sustainable modern society Sustainable economic development relies on technological change to achieve its aim but will governments take the tough steps that are required to force radical technological innovation rather than the technological fixes that have been evident to date? • 9. Immunization Study Vaccines do not cause autism. Just like every other spectrum disorder, Autism is a diagnosis associated with behavioral observations made over time and can neither be confirmed nor denied by a blood test. After reading both the Immunization study and the Stanford Prison study, I think the article about the Immunization study which was written by Drs. Sathyanarayana and Andrade is more damaging than either that of the Stanford Prison study or the Wakefield Immunization study. As a parent of four children who would ultimately receive the MMR vaccine in order to attend public school, I followed the Wakefield case with a high level of interest. Additionally at the time the Immunization study was published, I was employed by a multi subspecialty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The egregious sensationalism with which the findings were promoted by the media created the perfect breeding ground for this study to be used in a myriad of ways it was not intended. As such, it is my opinion that the greatest degree of fault which needs to be assessed with regard to the fervor with which this study generated outcry belongs to the media. In comparison to a story of similar significance such as the Watergate Scandal of the 1972, the lack of responsible journalism attached to the Immunization study is the likes with which I have not seen. In this instance, science allowed the media to dictate which direction it would pursue investigation following the publication of the Immunization study. This, in my opinion, is almost as irresponsible as the media coverage. Further, parents allowed themselves to be led down the proverbial rabbit hole instead of taking the time to trust but verify . As for the public, some believed the published study, and some did not. Those that believed went on to refuse to vaccinate their children, and the backlash has continued to be significant. Measles cases soared to levels which were close to that of what are found in herds of animals and set back the control of the disease by decades. There have been countless lawsuits filed, and hundreds of thousands of dollars once designated for the research of autism were redirected towards the alternative study of the connection between vaccination and autism. The reality of the study did not at all determine the perception which was that the MMR vaccine was ultimately responsible for a regressive form of autism. Sadly, I do not believe at this point, the harms are not repairable as the situation continues to bring about enormous debate. Hopefully we can learn from this to be less ... Using life insurance as an example of non indemnity insurance would also consider other value insurance such as personal accident and critical illness. In non indemnity the list of issues include group insurance, key employee insurance or issues of natural affection, eg, a grandmother will not be able to obtain insurance on the life of her grandson. In indemnity insurance, if insurable interest is removed, there may be odds with statute such as Marine Insurance and Life Assurance Acts. Within the debate is the argument whether insurable interest is required at all. Behind this debate is the definition of insurance which separates insurance contracts from those of gaming and the need to define due to the tax requirements being different for each. From the case Prudential Insurance V IRC[13], Mr Justice Channell stated his definition of insurance: The remaining essential is... that the insurance must be against something. • 13. Racial Marginalization After the First World War, Chicago just like other American cities was experiencing a huge surge in the number of immigrants that played a significant role in its renowned neighborhoods. As the immigrant communities trickled into Chicago, most of them settled in specific areas mostly for the purposes of cultural integration and identity. A classic example is the members of the Africa American community who settled in the Southern Side of Chicago and formed intense black neighborhoods (Pacyga, Chicago, 253). Consequentially, most of the people in the ethnic neighborhoods coalesced around each other for the purposes of social support as well as other social fears such as the glaring problems of racism that had taken deep roots in the American society more so before the civil rights movement had taken off. However, there has been more changes in the city such as the increased economic marginalization that has made the largely ethnic neighborhoods to be multi ethnic as members of other ethnic groups such as the Latinos, Mexicans and even the whites have integrated in to the low class black neighborhoods that have eventually led to the surge in Chicago slums. There have also been policies that have been adopted by Chicago mayoral office holders that have been aimed at undoing the racial marginalization that had played a major factor in the setting up of various Chicago neighborhoods. Thus, unlike in the past, the ethnic factor in the creation of neighborhoods has less ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Marion and Charlie dislike each other on a visceral level. Marion s feelings are not solely caused by Charlie s alcoholism and past behavior. She focuses upon Charlie a hatred borne of her resentment of her family s financial situation, as evidenced by Lincoln s comment to Charlie over lunch: I think ... Though the argument that resulted in the incident was the fault of both parties, Marion is unwilling or unable to consider Helen an equal party to Charlie s excesses. (p. 12) at dinner the first evening of his return, her behavior is colored by her ill feelings toward her brother in law, but her concern for his willingness to stay sober is valid and understandable given Charlie s past behavior and her genuine concern for Honoria s best interests. His continued separation from Honoria is wrenching, but Marion s resistance to relinquishing custody, though partially fuelled by her hatred of Charlie, is also motivated by her fondness for her niece. Charlie s longing for a life with Honoria is almost palpable throughout the story. Even though he seems drawn to visit his old haunts, he resists any temptation to fall back into his old habits. He is imprudent to leave Lincoln s address with Alix, the barman at the Ritz, to give to Duncan Schaeffer, but Duncan is a friend from college and the urge to see someone familiar is perhaps understandable given Charlie s loneliness. • 16. The Atkinson And Shiffrin Modal Model Of Memory Memory is a very crucial topic not everyone understands. We might hear an individual saying He has a great memory, or others mentioning they have a bad memory whenever they have forgotten an important subject. People use the term memory frequently but often not knowing its true meaning. According to Baddeley (1999), memory is not an actual organ as the heart, the kidneys, or the liver; instead, it consists of a network in which many systems work together, allowing us to be capable of remembering past events and in predicting the future. Reisberg (2013) presents the Atkinson and Shiffrin Modal Model of Memory, in which they explained that when human body receives an input, it is received as sensory information, which travels to our short term memory (also known as working memory) and is then processed to our long term memory (where it remains permanently). According to Reisberg (2013) working memory includes conscious and active processing of incoming auditory as well as visual spatial information. It also retrieves information stored from the long term memory. In other words, it is the memory a person uses when actively working on a specific task. Moreover, human working memory has a limited capacity; therefore, there is a magic number 7 plus or minus 2, which demonstrates that the average capacity of words that our working memory can store is 5 to 9 items (Reisberg, 2013). Baddeley developed a model acknowledged as the Working Memory System. This model ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Charles Tiebout in his seminal 1956 article put forth a model where local bodies compete in the provision of public services. He considers a city resident who wishes to move to the suburbs, a consumer voter , who selects a community that best reflects and satisfies his preferences for public goods. Given that local governments have set patterns of expenditure and revenue, the greater the number of local governments, the closer the consumer voter may find his preferences represented. Tiebout s model is based on the following assumptions: perfect mobility of consumer voters; their perfect knowledge of differences between revenue and expenditure patterns and the ability to react to these differences; many communities to choose from in which to live; no employment restrictions as all consumer voters live on dividend income and no external economies or diseconomies in the provision of public goods between communities. Additionally, he also defines an optimum level of community services i.e. the number of residents for whom the bundle of services can be produced at the lowest average cost. The Transient Sublime and Mortality in “Ode to a Nightingale” 何梓涵 12010007 To Professor Hou Yiling English Literature The Transient Sublime and Mortality in Ode to a Nightingale Composed during the most creative period in Keats s brief poetic career, Ode to a Nightingale has long been regarded as one of the most refined works of his poetry. Previous criticism has comprehensively explored its themes of nature, beauty and mortality, as well as its demonstration of Keats s notion of Negative Capability. But his pain stems not from grief, which we learn by surprise, but from an excess of happiness occasioned by the bird s song which is too happy to be endured. This ambivalent mixture of pain and pleasure is the characteristic mark of the sublime, which is further heightened by the sharp contrast between the poet s painful numbness and the bird s god like rapture and freedom. The poet then calls for wine, a beaker full of the warm South which may carry him into a state of the sublime where identification with the nightingale and union with nature are accessible, in order to escape the weariness, the fever, and the fret of human lives, where youth dies early and even love does not last long. But then he changes his mind: he will fly to the nightingale not through the artificial device of alcoholic intoxication ( Bacchus and his pards ), but through the agency of poetic imagination ( the viewless wings of Poesy ). For a moment the poet succeeds, exclaiming that he is already with thee . Imagination leads him into a trance, where he loses consciousness while arriving at the climax of the sublime. In his most exalted poetic vision, he beholds the holy lustre of the Queen Moon and her starry Fays in the tender night sky. But soon common sense abruptly obtrudes, pulling the poet from up amid the stars down to the earthly gloom where there is no light . As if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. The Pros And Cons Of Suicide Terrorism Suicide terrorism does not always have to be an attack on the United States from a different country with different cultural values. Suicide terrorism can come from American citizens. More current events are mass shootings by American citizens against their own people. One event is the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary. This attack was where Adam Lanza started by killing his own mother, and then moved on to Sandy Hook Elementary where he took the lives of Twenty children and six adults (Connecticut Shootings Fast Facts, 2017, para. 2). After this act of violence, Adam Lanza committed suicide. Another more recent mass shooting attack was the mass shooting in Las Vegas. This attack was carried out by Stephen Paddock. Stephen Paddock, in his attack killed 58 and wounded around 500 people before taking his own life (Yan, Park, 2017). Whether suicide terrorism is being used by domestic or foreign enemies, the message is clear. They want to hurt innocent people but at the same time scare the rest of the American people. Also, after these attacks many political battles were pushed. Whether it be going to war with another country, or making far stricter laws to possess a firearm and to outlaw certain types of fire arms. These political battles have sparked many debates among the American people. What Are The Benefits Of African American Studies There are multiple factors that differentiate the history and experience of African Americans from those of Asian, Hispanic and Native Americans. First African Americans were involuntary immigrated to the United States by traders looking to exploit them as a commodity to promote slavery. Unlike African Americans most ethnic groups immigrated here voluntary for economic and political freedom. Also while some of these groups were discriminated against their was a intensive effort to erase African culture from the minds of African Americans. Today there are outlets for women to take control in all spheres, where once that was deemed unacceptable.
