Mobile Payment Technologies By Robert Warner
Mobile Payment Technologies Robert Warner ISM3011 Florida Atlantic University April 9, 2016 The
advent of the internet connected smartphone has opened up a whole new world for the consuming
public as they now have access to the world of ecommerce in the palms of their hands. As more
personal data became transferred to these mini computers, the competing interests of more intrusive
applications continue to clash with the need for greater security and data integrity. One of these areas
of conflict has been in the field of mobile payments where there has been the desire to use the personal
financial information stored on a smartphone to conduct business transactions in a convenient yet
secure manner. Recently, technological advancements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
NFC devices can simultaneously support the following three modes of operation. Reader/writer mode
which allows the NFC device to read and/or write passive NFC tags and stickers P2P mode which
allows the NFC device to send and receive data to and from other NFC peers which has been used for
several years as the Android Beam file transfer feature Card emulation mode allows the NFC device to
act as an NFC card. This can now be accessed by an external NFC reader such as an NFC enabled
point of sale terminal. Magnetic secure transmission employs the technology of electromagnetism to
transmit payment card data to payment terminals that are equipped with traditional magnetic stripe
readers. This essentially turns every traditional point of sale terminal that s used for swipe card
transactions into a potential contactless payment system without the need to modify or upgrade the
hardware. The MST technology was developed by LoopPay, a small development company that was
acquired by Samsung in February 2015 and is the driver behind Samsung Pay. Electricity is passed
through a small metal coil inside the smartphone which generates a magnetic field that can now
communicate with standard magnetic payment card readers. The phone can now emulate the physical
process of swiping a card through the point of sale terminal allowing for the same familiar transaction
process without the need to produce and swipe the actual card. The

Causes Of Eyewitness Testimony
Intellectuals and experts alike share a common belief that the most significant cause of unjust
convictions is due to inaccurate eyewitness testimonies. Scepticism of the validity of eye witness
testimonies has increased dramatically; scientific credibility of forensic evidence has weakened its
reliability. Thus, resulting in this being the dominant root of false convictions (Coolican, 1996). In
2007, The Innocence Project stated that over 75% of unjust convictions contained eye witness
testimonies (Innocence Project, 2007). Further studies have also had comparable results, for example
Brandon Davies (1973). Is it feasible that an individual s memory is so imprecise that it is unreliable
in producing faultless memory recall? Furthermore, if memory is so undependable why is it still
frequently used in the criminal justice system today if the consequence is innocent people being
incarcerated?
Historically, eyewitness testimony has been frequently practised, and has played a consequential role
in the conviction of criminals. Monumental amounts of unsolved crimes lacking sufficient evidence
has meant that an eyewitness testimony could help secure a much needed verdict in an otherwise
unsolvable crime. However, in this contemporary society, experts claim that many factors can be
responsible for faulty eyewitness testimony. For example, post incident events, most specifically
suggestive police strategy (Brace and Byford, 2012). Milgram s (1963) study into obedience

Sexual Assault On Teenage Girls
In a study that was documented in December 2014, for the period 1995 2013, females ages 18 to 24
had the highest rate of rape and sexual assault victimizations compared to females in all other age
groups (Langton Sinozich, p. 1). This report compared and described how sexual assault can effect
students and nonstudents, but it focused mainly on females with the male as the offender. The findings
are from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which
collects information on nonfatal crimes reported and not reported to police against persons age 12 or
older (Langton Sinozich, 2014, p. 1). It is important to note that the statistics for sexual assault based
on the NCVS may not be accurate due ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is far too much of the whole victim blaming, glorification of sex, and lack of consideration for a
person. I believe if we focus on fixing how society functions during sexual assault cases, then I
believe we can decrease the rates of sexual assault by helping people become more informed and by
treating it as a serious issue. When it comes to punishments, they must be more severe and certain or
else things like this will continue to happen. We also need to focus on getting those who are assaulted
to let someone know. There are people here for them that can help, even if they don t think they need
help, they do. Sexual assault is a serious crime that affects both females and males at any age. If we
continue to see it as anything else, then it ll only get worse over time which is not something that the

Persuasive Essay On Stop Smoking
Why One Should Stop Smoking
Smoking is a huge problem in today s society. Many people don t understand the consequences that
come with smoking. Cigarettes and marijuana are very common uses of smoking. As a college student
I am able to the effects these two drugs have on students mental and physical abilities. People shouldn
t smoke because not only does smoking affect your everyday way of live but they may also kill you.
People who become addicted to these certain substances know the risks but don t care because they
are mentally attached to the drugs that destroy their body. Marijuana affects the brain the most while
tobacco affects organs in your body. According to the article Weed Smoke VS. Cigarette Smoke:
Which is worse? By Delilah Butterfield When it comes to the of smoking, research suggests that
tobacco is far more harmful to the lungs than cannabis. Both marijuana and tobacco increase the
chances of lung cancer. People who are under 55 had an increased chance increased chance in forming
a type of lung cancer (Morris). If are diagnosed with asthma then these two substances can make your
breathing problem 90% worse than what it was. Most smokers don t even know what they are
smoking in reality. Tobacco and marijuana are made to calm the nerves of the human body (They are
downers) but, they also are made of multiple poisonous and chemical substances. Tobacco contains
chemicals like Nicotine (the addictive drug that produces the effect that people are looking for and one
of harshest chemicals in tobacco smoke), Hydrogen cyanide, Lead, Arsenic, Ammonia, Radioactive
elements, carbon monoxide, etc. (3, The American Cancer Society) All of these elements put together
form one of the deadliest products that is sold all over the world, called a cigarette. Companies created
E Cigarettes claiming that they were less harmful to the body but these products also contain addictive
nicotine that can cause mental dependence on nicotine (The American Cancer Society). In the last
paragraph we learned multiple chemicals that create tobacco but marijuana also is made with
dangerous chemicals. Marijuana contains at least 60 chemicals called cannabinoids. Researchers

Food Industry And Its Effects On The Health And Prosperity...
Engineered Food
Technology and industrialization of the food industry have changed how food is grown, and altered its
nutritional value. Multinational organizations are making decisions that affect the health and
prosperity of people worldwide. These organizations have found ingenuous ways of packaging and
marketing unsafe products to the public. Education and awareness of the problems are the only hope
for improving the food industry and the quality of food.
Industrialization of food began with the advent of fast food chains. The McDonald brothers were the
first to introduce assembly line food processing. By assigning each employee one task to perform they
were more efficient, and they paid those employees less than employers who expected an employee to
perform start to finish tasks. The food industry implemented the assembly line approach, quickly
changing how food is processed, and decreasing the pay rate for workers. Meat processing once
regarded as a profession performed by skilled butchers, now it is a highly dangerous job filled by
minority or illegal immigrants willing to take health and deportation risks for a very low wage.
Efficiency and cost drives all bad behavior across the food industry. (Kenner, 2008)
Cattle once raised on grass and grains now feed on liquefied protein, liquefied fat and corn. The calves
are still grass fed until they reach 400 500 pounds; they are then sold to stocker operators who start
feeding corn to the cattle. This is an unnatural

The Effects Of Solar Power On The Earth
Saving the earth
Imagine a typical family rushing out of the house to go to work or school. Many of the simple things
can be easily over looked, and while rushing out even more can be forgotten. Children can easily leave
things plugged in and parents can forget to turn the light switches off. Fossil fuels are wasted each
time someone forgets to conserve energy. This is a problem because fossil fuels are nonrenewable.
This means that they can not be produced at the rate in which they are used. People of the United
States should not have to worry about when fossil fuels are going to run out. The Environmental
Protection Agency, also known as the EPA, should be given more control over how energy should be
made. By doing so the EPA would be promoting the use of solar power to help make renewable and
lasting energy. Solar power is a great use of alternative fuel because it protects the earth from further
harm, it allows the earth to be protected and assures lasting power for the future.
Overview of the Problem Nonrenewable energy is a problem in the United States. Wars have been
fought for the use of oil and other nonrenewable resources. One article even suggests that, The energy
crisis of the 1970 s drove up gasoline prices, sent the economy into a tailspin and prompted lawmakers
and government agencies to develop new energy polices. ( Are renewable energy sources viable
alternatives to fossil fuels ). For many years the question on people s minds has been, when are we

The questionnaire and interview was chosen over other methods of data collection because of the time

community, this hindered my project to reflect views and opinions of other parts of the country. The
design of the questionnaire had too many close ended questions thus the respondent was unable to
express his thoughts to any extent that have not been pre empted or not considered by the researcher. A
copy of the questionnaire and interview can be found in Appendix on page Problems were also
encountered in the process of the interview. Some questions asked could not be answered due to the

an explosion he set himself (Phineas Gage Information). The iron piece shredded the front left side of
his brain when it entered under his cheek bone and exited out the top of his head (Phineas Gage

Prisoner s Dilemma
This paper further examines The Prisoner s Dilemma. The Prisoner s Dilemma is a situation where
two prisoners are placed into isolation cells and they can choose to either stay silent or confess. This
game of probability that has taken many forms, but the concept is always the same. There are two
people who have been arrested and can choose to either remain silent or confess. I first become
interested in the prisoner s dilemma while reading The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee
Stewart. The prisoner s dilemma is only briefly touched upon in this novel, but I was intrigued enough
to want to peruse a further analysis. In this paper the prisoner s dilemma will be further analyzed using
probability prediction methods. The Prisoner s Dilemma was developed in the 1950s by game
theorists Dresher and Flood. These theorists were working to determine the possibility of
intercontinental nuclear warfare. It was developed during experiments that tested to see how people
behaved in particular situations. The original situation surrounded two people deciding whether to buy
a car. The introduction of two prisoners to this situation was added by Princeton mathematician A.W.

For his third song, he began playing before the piano joined him. Between him and the pianist, they

A Research Study On Gm Crops
GM crops are created by inserting a gene externally from an foreign source into unrelated species.
This has granted an ability to overcome many physiological barriers and to exchange genetic
information among all living organisms. The purpose of genetic modification is to create a faster,
efficient, and much more precise way to achieve the same results from artificial selection.
Additionally, it can be used in order to introduce a new trait to the crop that would not be usually
naturally occurring.
These GM crops can have many beneficial traits that improves the overall profile of the plant this
includes: extended shelf life, drought tolerance, pesticidal/herbicidal resistance, and increased
nutritional yield, etc. Many GM crop examples ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, in order for geneticists to identify a gene of interest, they start by looking at other potential
organisms. The geneticist has to identify the trait they desire the organism to have and must find any
other organisms that already contain that gene. Finding a novel gene of interest requires intensive
research into that gene as well as luck. As an example, if a scientist wanted a gene that improved the
nutrient composition of a plant, they would look through many organisms that they believed that
produces that specific nutrient, additionally if a scientist wanted a crop to have a gene that allows it to
survive in drought conditions, they would most likely look for an organism living in those persistently
hotter conditions. Additionally, this also involves testing in order to find the organism with the most
ideal and worthy trait.
Secondly, in order to isolate a gene of interest, comparative gene analysis must be done in order to
locate and decode the specific organisms gene of interest. Whole genome alignment is done with
plants that have and do not have the gene to pinpoint the regions of difference, and if there are no pre
sequenced genomes available to perform comparison tests, scientists will use gene knockouts on the
plant genome till the characteristic of interest is gone, thus identifying the gene that generates the

Unrest in the Arab World
Will the United States be on the right side of history?
The Right Side of History? The wave of demonstrations, uprisings and revolutions in North Africa and
the Middle East has presented the United States with a complex set of diplomatic problems. While a
key component of U.S. foreign policy is promoting and supporting democracy, it is vital to U.S.
interests that the Middle East remains relatively stable. A truly democratic Arab world is a new
concept, and is one that has yet to show its true colors. If the result of the Palestinian Authority

Shortly after the protests began in Tunisia, a wave of protests and demonstrations swept over the Arab
world, from Algeria to Yemen, with few countries being exempt from the movement. Leaders of
wealthier countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain, offered economic concessions to stave
off unrest. Other leaders offered minor political concessions. Yet the protests continue. The Egyptian
Revolution, which began with protests on January 25, 2011 and lasted for 18 days, became a media

Thomas Aquinas 5th Argument For God
In Aquinas 5th argument, he states that things that lack intelligence always or nearly always act for an
end, to achieve the best result and because of that, it is plain to see that it is not unintentional for the
things to act for an end but has been designed to accomplish their end by an intelligent being we call
God. The argument is valid because the premises that are given in the argument are true which follows
the conclusion which is also true. The argument is also sound because it is valid and actually true. This
argument is one of the most compelling argument for God because of the fact that our surroundings

Specify sub stage if appropriate.
Under the Jungian theory, whilst Mark was pretending to be a superhero, he was most likely in the
archaic sub stage of the childhood stage. This would explain his constant pretending of being a

Theory Comparison Questions
1. Use another theory, besides Jung s, to explain Mark s career choice.
For the purpose of this question, I will be using the theories of Sigmund Freud. As such, Freud would
delve into and further elaborate the influence of Mark s childhood. Freud would view Mark s
childhood experiences of playing superhero games to explain his behavior later in life. In conclusion,
Freud would believe that these experiences meant Mark was likely already predestined to obtain a
career such as being a firefighter.
2. How could environmental factors, such as reinforcements and punishment, explain Mark s career
choice? What are some reinforcements that encourage this behavior? How is the focus of this
explanation different than that of Jung s theory in explaining Mark s career choice?
In the form of the multiple thank you s! and the continuous praise he receives as a firefighter, Mark s
behavior of acting like a superhero is reinforced. These beliefs of his awaken his unconscious belief
that he needs thanks and praise in order to achieve the high esteem of manhood.

Summary Of Andre Bazin s The Ontology Of The Photographic...
In Andre Bazin s essay, The Ontology of The Photographic Image , he argues that one of the defining
characteristics and inherent motivations in the production of art and artifacts, be it the mummification
of Pharaohs, portraits of Kings and Emperors, is the preservation of life by a representation of life
(Bazin 238). He elaborates that at the heart of the plastic arts, such as painting and sculpture, is a need
to make immortal the mortal and to turn the image of our flesh into clay, steel and paint. Bazin s essay
touches on our need and motives to transform ourselves and preserve our being beyond its physical
existence. He focuses on how photography is the purest form of capturing reality and how the arrival
of cinema challenges itself with preserving life as it is or was, without the alteration and manipulation
from editing. Points of Interest Although most of Bazin s essay is very interesting to read, there are a
few points that I felt stand out within the essay. Bazin explains that painting, in its attempt in the
production of realism, encountered a problem in combining both the representation of the spiritual
reality or the emotionally reality with the representation of the physical reality. Bazin notes that
painting can successfully represent the emotionally reality, but that the reproduction of the physical
reality will always lean towards and illusion. This illusion that Bazin references throughout his essay, I
believe, is alluding to the inability to truly

finally saw that the fish were reproducing. Out of the six species introduced, there are only two types
of fish still living in Crater Lake today which are the Kokanee Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and the
Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The Kokanee Salmon is a dwarf fish. These types of fish are
the best fish in the lake. The last recorded stockings were silver salmon in 1937 and rainbow trout in

landslides in cloud free areas and use this data to direct traditional methods of field data collection (i.e.
helicopters) to hot spots of greater landslide susceptibility. This report will explore and test this
hypothesis using a large landslide dataset collected during the Gorkha earthquake series , Nepal, 2015.
1.1. Study area
Nepal is situated on the Himalayan arc where the Indian plate subducts the Eurasian plate at a
convergence rate of ~20 mm yr 1 (Goda and Jibson., 2015). Nepal is classified as a less developed
country where landsliding severely stunts its development (Petley et al., 2006). With reference to Fig.
1 this report has limited the study area to the (7) districts: Dhading, Dolakha, Gorkha, Lamjung,
Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Sindhupalcho. Together these districts have a total land area of 14,564 km2
(representing ~10% of Nepal proper) with an elevation range 189 m to 7,922 m. Within this study area
n=4,201 landslides occurred as a result of the Mw7.8 and Mw7.3 events. The study area spans the
middle high Himalaya where population is relatively low and sparsely distributed (Kargel et al.,

Whale Rider Belonging
Whale rider is told in the context of a Maori tribe in modern New Zealand. The movie tells the story
of a young girl, Pai, and her grandfather Karo, who must struggle with adapting a patriarchal Maori
legend with the Pai s seeming affinity with sacred traditions. The music in this movie underscores
each scene and leaves the viewer feeling moved emotionally. Music tells the audience how they
should be feeling and what emotions they should be experiencing. It adds scale and dramatizes events.
Music in movies is crucial to manipulate our emotions towards the scene. Incorporating music into
films will not only make the final outcome more interesting, but it also allows the audience the ability
to connect emotionally to characters and their situation, also reinforcing the story and/or message.
Music can also work very well to make clear the heritage of a character/group of characters or the
geographic setting of the movie or a scene. If for example Chinese or Japanese sounding music can be
heard during a certain scene, the audience can easily spot where it is taking place without the need of
visually establishing the location too much. Music also has the ability to clear the time frame of the
movie. For example if classical music is being heard in the film, the audience are able to easily
recognize that the movie is set in an older period of time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Together, these sounds create a strong sense of place and enhance the message of the film. The film s

hospital, accompanied by a terrified husband. The music conveys the pain far more than does the

Manipulation In A Rose For Emily
A Rose for Freedom
A Rose for Emily written by William Faulkner, symbolizes so much more than what is said in the text.
William Faulkner sets an intense mood at the beginning of the story when announcing the death of
Miss Emily Grierson. Not many stories start off with death, but in this case, Emily s death is a very
important key point to the story. The narrator manipulates time in the way he tells the story. The
narrator starts off with with Emily s death and continues the story with the past, the late past, and the
past past. This time manipulation is very important to set the themes of the story. There is not one
specific theme, but actually a variety. For example, the time manipulation by confusing the reader
with the past and the present. Another example is the loneliness ... Show more content on

The fact that Emily buys a man s toilet set and a complete outfit of men s clothing, including a
nightshirt, symbolizes that Emily truly cared about Homer. Emily uses these things to set up a decked
room as for a bridal in her house, and sets homer s body in a bed. Homer s body was lain in the
attitude of an embrace and next to him was a pillow with the indentation of a head. This symbolizes
that Emily slept with Homer every night. The biggest clue of all, was the iron grey hair they found on
the bed, which was Emily s. Emily symbolizes the old South because she resists change in the way
that, as she got older, and the world around her changed, she latches on to her traditions. Tobe s
disappearance symbolizes the freedom of slaves after Emily s death, which symbolizes the end of the
Old South. He also disappears to avoid having to spill Emily s secrets to the town. The rose in The
Rose for Emily symbolizes the true love which Miss Emily never experienced. The house is a huge
symbolism of Emily s isolation because that was all she had, and all her father left her. It also
symbolizes the decaying South and at the end of the story, the house, like Miss Emily, has become

Analysis Of The Skill Of Self-Confidence
In his TedTalk The Skill of Self Confidence (15:40), Dr. Ivan Joseph discusses the importance of
having faith in oneself and how confidence is ultimately a result of our attitudes/actions. He begins
with a story about how, after winning the National Championship as a college soccer coach, he faced
hundreds of parents and players that wanted to be apart of his team. However, despite the great skills
they brought to the actual game, he was more concerned with their self confidence, as he felt that that
was the determining factor of whether or not they would be great players for his team. The entire talk
sits upon that foundation; if one has confidence in their own abilities to overcome any given obstacle,
they will be successful in whatever they choose to do. He clarifies that self confidence is a skill rather
than a trait because he believes it can be learned. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Joseph s message can be applied to almost any element of our class. Self confidence is needed in
business communication, leadership, self protection, and general everyday operations. In the corporate
world, it is important that an employee is sure of themselves and what they are working for. As we
have learned, goal oriented workers are the most productive, and open communication is necessary for
a healthy setting. Both of these involve self confidence; when setting a goal, a leader must be
confident in their abilities to help staff members achieve it. Those who actually carry out the tasks
must be confident enough to do so without hesitation or self doubt. In business communication, being
self confident means sharing not only your ideas about a project, but also your values and what you
are and are not willing to do to further the organization s

State Repression Research Paper
Shortly after the murder of LaPorte, the Canadian government established harsh state repression, not
only in Quebec, but all over Canada. The government s explanation for this aggressiveness was the
belief that state repression would bring a stop to the current terrorist attack. Once the FLQ was
stopped and James Cross was recovered, there was also the belief that the state repression stopped
future terrorist attacks from happening in Canada. The question we are thus faced with is whether state
repression decreases the number of future attacks after the repression has taken place. To answer this
question, we could conduct a causal experiment on the effect of state repression on terrorist attacks.
The start of the experiment would be to gather the group that one will be looking at for the
experiment. In the case of the experiment on the effect of state repression on terrorist attacks, one
would need to look at states that face terrorism. The treatment for the experiment groups would be the
repression. The next step in the experiment would be determining what measurements we will be
taking. The first measurement we would take would be on the amount of state repression that takes
place in each state. This measurement would should be on a rough scale since it would be quite ...

the number before the experiment and after the experiment took place to record if there was any
difference in those numbers. The next assessment we would make is a comparison of those numbers
against whether there was state repression or not. This assessment is so that we can compare what the
effect of the different amounts of repression were for each state. We are looking for whether there was
a continuation in terrorist activities after repression and if there was, how the number of terrorist

Pressure Ulcers And A Critical Care Situation
Pressure Ulcer Prevention
Preventing pressure ulcers in an acute care or a critical care situation can be challenging for nursing
staff. Pressure ulcers cause an increase in morbidity and mortality, along with very high cost for the
hospitals. Treatment cost average $11 billion per year in the United States. (Skolnik M.D. Carcia,
D.O., 2015) They cause patient pain and are preventable by all nursing staff. The skin is the body s
largest organ and the first line of defense against the internal and external environment, and it plays an

Reliability
Reliability describes the consistency of a measurement method within a study. (Burns Grove, 2011) In
critiquing the reliability of the Brunner et al. (2012) article, the study was completed at a large urban
hospital using three critical care units and two acute care units. The two skin care products were
randomly assigned to the participants. The sample size goal in each group was to be 100 participants.
Results of the study included that only 64 participants were enrolled. The article written by Brunner et
al. (2012) was not reliable for measurement methods. The study is not described in great detail, does
not have evidence of accuracy, and has a lack of participants.
Validity
Validity deals with determining how well the instrument reflects the abstract concept being examined.
(Burns Grove, 2011) In critiquing the validity of the Brunner et al. (2012) article, they used a quasi
experimental, two group study without a control group to conduct their study. Their study examined
two skin care products used to prevent skin breakdown in acute and critical care patients with various
lengths of stay. According to Brunner et al. (2012), nurses approach skin care in various

Soil Music Analysis
How does Dirt Music articulate the main concepts which foregrounds your personal reading?
Tim Winton s novel Dirt Music explores universal experiences and the fragility of the human
condition, enabling the extrapolation of many personal readings due to its textual integrity. A personal
reading foregrounds self imposed solitude catalysed by paralysis from grief and traumatic events,
which results in emotional suppression and deterioration of identity. Post modern globalisation
exacerbates such alienation to marginalise non conformists by preventing fulfilling human
connections. Thus, painful cathartic processes are required to resolve the detriments of disconnection
through immersion into restorative landscapes to confront the past and heal.
Trauma can lead to an individual s desire for isolation from the physical world as a coping mechanism
to medicate grief and loss. Tim Winton s novel Dirt Music portrays the healing story of Georgie and
Lu who painfully confront their pasts to reinvigorate life. Solitude imposed by the oblivion of
virtuality is articulated when Georgie swims with the dog by the metaphor and emotional adjectives,
she lay back in the water, wishing some portal would open, that she might click on some dopey icon
and proceed safely, painlessly, without regret or memory, highlighting the artificial suppression of
emotions as alleviation from the debilitating consequences of grief. Moreover, disconnection as a
protective barrier against loss is

Although research on climate change is quite vague about the exact degree of warming and the
consequences for the natural environment, a wide range of impacts can be expected (Metz, 2011). The
temperature changes and the sea level rise, this has a negative impact on food production, water
availability, human health, biological environment and infrastructure in coastal areas. Vulnerability is
highest in poor countries where the changes will have a devastating effect. Metz (2011) states that

Furthermore, voluntary climate change policy will result in elevating UBS reputation (Hoffman,
2005). As stated before, a large percentage of society all over the world has concerns about global
warming. Different business units of UBS can benefit from this reputational aspect. First, private
investors who consider environmental strategies in making investments will prefer UBS Wealth
Management and Business Banking Switzerland above competitors such as Citigroup and Morgan
Stanley. Second, institutional investors as well as private clients will value UBS environmental
friendly reputation. Thirdly, UBS could broaden its scope by starting trading carbon credits. Their
reputation could help them compete with competitors such as Morgan Stanley that is active in this are
already. Besides their clients, UBS employees will be more motivated to work for a CR company
since they believe that companies should contribute to solve global warming problems. Therefore, a
green policy can increase the retention rates of skilled workers (Hoffman, 2005).

Influences in Our Lives
Influences You can be influenced by anything, the television, your friends and your family. If you are
influenced by these factors negatively, the influences may push you to lead dangerous, life threatening
decisions. How far can the media, family, and friends push you? Media has had an increasingly
negative impact (Mokeyane 2); media affects the lives of us all negatively at some point. People are
being driven to eating disorders and others by copying the behaviors of the lifestyles being projected.
Teenagers are surrounded by all types of media; radios, television, magazines, and the internet. All this
media will produce images in our teenagers brains that they need to be perfect to be accepted in
society from ads with skinny supermodels. How did this unrealistic idea of the perfection of the ideal

The end of the Cold War that created peaceful space and flourishing Chinese economic growth
influenced the speed of military modernization and shifted its focus on protection of maritime
resources and defending of territorial issue in the south and southeast (Ross 2009: 55; Storey 2008:

Meanwhile in southern part of its territory several maritime dispute disputes began to attract China s
attention. During early decade of 1990s, China had just ratified United Nations Convention on the
Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982) in 1992. The ratification is going to allow China to claim 200
nautical miles as its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and could exploit oil and gas located in South
China Sea basin. Beside that, the growing tension because of Taiwan s independence in 1990 had
significantly altered China focus to the South and modernization its military force. Geopolitical nature
of the potential maritime conflict in the south had forced China to modernize its naval power (Storey
2008: 115).
This could be considered as changing posture of China s military capability from cumbersome
continental power towards more modern and dynamic naval power in responding future political and
military dispute in the southern part of its territory (Ross 2009: 56). China s military modernization

Naming Alcohols in Chemistry
In chemistry, an alcohol is in the hydroxyl functional group ( OH) is bound to a carbon atom. In
particular, this carbon center should be saturated, having single bonds to three other atoms. Important
alcohols are the simple acyclic alcohols. Of those, ethanol (C2H5OH) is the type of alcohol found in
alcoholic beverages, and in common speech the word alcohol refers specifically to ethanol. When it
comes to alcohol reactions the functional group of the alcohols is the hydroxyl group OH. Unlike the
alkyl halides, this group has two reactive covalent bonds, the C O bond and the O H bond. The
electronegativity of oxygen is greater than carbon and hydrogen. The covalent bonds of this functional
group are polarized so that oxygen is electron ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

ethane 1,2 diol (ethylene glycol), propane 1,2 diol (propylene glycol), Propane 1,2,3 triol (glycerol),
Butane 1,2,3,4 tetraol (Erythritol, Threitol), Pentane 1,2,3,4,5 pentol (xylitol), Hexane 1,2,3,4,5,6

alcohols would be alicyclic alcohols. In this group there is Cyclohexane 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 hexol (inositol)
and 2 (2 propyl) 5 methyl cyclohexane 1 ol (menthol) (Britannica). The names above are just a list of
some of the alcohols that can be found within the big range and different types of alcohols. The
alcohols above use the same formats as alkanes to be named. When it comes to alcohols and naming
them they will end with the letters ol at the end of the name, which means that they are alcohols.

Draft Research Paper Matthew Marchant Professor Roehrig TSDM Security Strategies September 23,
2016 The Role and Implications of Offensive Cyber Operations in Chinese Military Strategy
Contemporary news media feature regular reports of the interconnectedness of modern economies,
societies, and militaries, highlighting the associated benefits and vulnerabilities of a networked
commons. While Chinese businessmen, like those of other nations, have capitalized on technological
advancements to make fortunes in electronic commerce and the networked economy, Chinese political
and military leaders have likewise displayed an understanding of the threats and opportunities posed
by the virtual world. While China, in particular organs of the People s Liberation Army (PLA), has
historically and will likely continue conducting cyber espionage and network exploitation for
information gathering and related purposes, for reasons nested in the individual, state, and
international levels, and assuming the classic rational actor paradigm of decision making, it is
increasingly likely that offensive cyber operations (OCO) will be preferred elements of China s
military strategy in the coming years. For reasons including an increasing American ability to detect,
counter, and reciprocate OCO as well as cost efficiency and regional factors and regional power
dynamics, China will increasingly choose to target U.S. allies vice U.S. interests directly. This will
consequently create a requirement

Mentally Retarded Criminals Should Face the Death Penalty...
On June 26, 1989, the United States Supreme Court, in the case of Penry v. Lynaugh, upheld the
imposition of the death penaklty on a mentally retarded offender, John Penry (Chan 1211). The Court,
also, held that the Federal Constitution s eighth amendment s cruel and unusual punishment clause is
not violated by the execution of mentally retarded defendants (Cook 869). I strongly concur with the
United States Supreme Court s decision. I do not believe that mentally retarded defendants should be
categorically exempt from the death penalty because of their retardation. I hold this position because
IQ test results are sometimes unreliable, there are different degrees of understanding of right and
wrong among mentally retarded ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
High reliabilities are especially needed for tests used for individual assessment such as in court cases
(Sattler 26).
Each IQ test incorporates a standard error of measurement, which is the variation between the
obtained score and the true score. This difference is sometimes as much as fifteen points. Thus, the IQ
score obtrained by a defendant is only one of many possible scores that may be achieved with
different sample questions or the same questions at a different time (Rumley 1334). Should a mentally
retarded defendant with an IQ of 70 be exempt from the death penalty when his score could range
anywhere from 85 to 55? I vehemently believe that a blanket exemption from the death penalty
because of an unreliable IQ score is wrong. In addition, Grossman states that the IQ s of mentally
retarded persons do not remain constant. Studies have shown great fluctuation in IQ scores for such
reasons as fatigue or illness. Numerous studies indicate that motivational factors can affect IQ scores
(Grossman 26 27). Certainly a defendant facing the death penalty would be highly motivated to do
poorly on an IQ test knowing that a score of 70 or below could save him from the death penalty.
Although the reliability of IQ test results is questionable, many states including Georgia, Tennessee,
Kentucky, Maryland, and New Mexico have enacted legislation categorically prohibiting the
execution of defendants who have an IQ of 70 or below

Noel Ignatiev s How The Irish Became White
Centered around the Antebellum era, Noel Ignatiev s How the Irish Became White took place during
the height of Irish immigration to the United States, where millions crossed the Atlantic in search of
economic prosperity and other central pillars of the American Dream. However, Ignatiev asserts that
those traditional American values were originally inaccessible for the newly arrived Irish immigrants.
Shown by the virulent opposition toward immigration, Ignatiev highlights how the growing fear of
foreign intrusion and ethnic tensions threatened to rape the superfluity of many Irish immigrants and
their opportunity to uncover prosperity and freedom in America. Not only did How the Irish Became
White uncover the brutal oppression and widespread xenophobic sentiments towards the Irish, it also
shows how they eventually gain a level of economic opportunity by cultivating a scene of whiteness
that embodied contemporary American values and briefs. In the book, Ignatiev demonstrates how Irish

Economic inequality seemed to be in a decline or general phasing off starting from the mid 1930s.
However, in part due to the Reagan presidency and regime changes, starting 1981 we have seen a

inequality is only emphasized as data shows severely concentrated gains as those in the top .1 and .01

three decades earlier (234). McAdam and Kloos only emphasizes this growing inequality over a
multitude of statistics that offers compelling evidence that convinces me that not only economic
inequality has been on the rise for some years now but also shows that there is a possible connection
to the slow release revolution of the Reagan administration. While I do not believe that all economic
inequality can be traced back to the Reagan administration, I do believe that it had a key part in
changing the political landscape that would only seek to provide a prime breeding ground for
economic inequality to flourish in America. Poverty also has a way of rising health inequality, as those

Persuasive Essay On Weightlifting
Weight training is vital to your sports performance, because if you are matched with someone in skill,
then it will take speed, power, and strength to defeat your opponent on the court, field or in the ring.
Some athletes even coaches and trainers get confused with the deference between, bodybuilding or
muscle building vs. weight training for strength and power for specific sports.
For example having huge muscular legs does NOT mean you can jump very high, or run very fast;
increased jumping ability comes from being able to lift with speed.
If the weight continues to increase and the speed stays the same, power and vertical jumping ability
will increase only if you maintain your body weight.
When using weight lifting for sports the main goal is to improve and strengthen movements in your
sport. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So if you do dead lifts, squats, power cleans, snatches, clean and jerk, vertical jumps, depth jumps,
lunges, calve raises, you will help target and strengthen the jumping muscles in you legs and some in
your upper body.
Also when doing the specific movement or exercise don t go past to point where the speed and power
of the lift is reduced, wait till you are fully rested, and increase the weight and do the same, on your
last set you can do multiple sets with minimal rest in between with the heaviest weight for at least 3 5
reps, or do an all out total reps for more muscles growth and absolute power or strength.
Next time you do these exercises try for an extra rep or 2 on you all out max set(s) or multiple power
sets.
Record your workouts for total weight lifted and the amount of time you take to rest and complete a
series of exercises or

The Issue Of Illegal Immigration
Illegal immigration has become an explosive issue in the U.S. Many people have debated fervently in
their disapproval of illegal immigration, whereas others defend it just as ardently. The church and
Christian religion/theology has been drawn into the fray over illegal aliens as well, with Christians on
both sides seeking to validate their positions based on their own individual beliefs. I interviewed many
different people with equally varying opinions on the matter. Over the past few months, many people,
old and young, have been educated on the ethical dilemma that immigration has caused; especially
due to the Syrian refugee crisis. Every person I interviewed had valid statements about the issue that is
affecting the United States and the World. The majority of people I interviewed were Christian;
however, one person was an Atheist and another was Agnostic. I found their opinions extremely
interesting for the fact that their opinions were morally based and not spiritually. I did ask in depth of
the Christian interviewees about how their religious and spiritual view affects the view of this
controversial issue. Some used the law of the land as an important aspect. They believe that those who
illegally enter any country violate that nation s laws as well as the laws of God. Believers are torn
between showing compassion and mercy to the illegal immigrants who seek help and not wanting to
disrupt God s word. The government expects private citizens to act as law enforcement.

Introduction
Technology takes a new leap every day. New designs and components will require high resolutions for
monitoring health and structural characteristics and also to test their performance. The quality of new
devices directly implies on the level which we can measure their performance. Conventional
techniques which have been lasting for so long will not provide the high resolutions needed for new
and advancing designs for the measurements of different quantities, mainly strain. Some of the
conventional methods like Classic foil strain gauges and accelerometers have been trusted and used
for several years to measure the strains on various buildings, air planes, human body, and many others,
which end up failing during harsh conditions. Fiber optic strain sensors will not fail whereas the
conventional strain sensors might fail during some conditions. Fiber optic strain sensors have high
resolution and are immune to electromagnetic interference and can survive high temperatures, and bad
weather conditions. Also, the fiber optic strain sensor has 25 times better gauge factor than that of the
conventional sensors. There are two types of fiber optic strain sensors whose mechanical and optical
properties changes when there is an

The Power Of Power In Les Miserables And The Kite Runner
What is power? Power has been the demise of leaders, empires, and the cause of war. Can power be
used for good? Both Les Miserables and The Kite Runner can be juxtaposed to show power, what it is,
and what it can be used for. Les Miserables and The Kite Runner show that power is subjective, and
has many different interpretations. Merriam Webster dictionary has many definitions of power. Power
could be considered the ability to produce an effect, or physical might, or even possession of control,
authority, or influence over others. Wealth is a form of power. We see two different elements of this in
both selections of literature. In Les Miserables, Jean Valjean, the former convict, uses wealth that he
acquires under the name Mayor Madeleine to provide jobs for his constituents in a factory that he
owns. Valjean used his power through wealth to empower many others to make their own wealth. This
use of power is noble and just. Instead of giving others money or gifts, he gives them the gift of
empowering themselves through sustainable work. This is a redeeming moment of Jean Valjean s
character, contrasting his past as a convict. Baba is the father of Amir, the protagonist in The Kite
Runner. He is a man of great influence, and possesses a strong moral compass. Baba is a very well
written, realistic character. He is not restricted to good or bad, but blurs the lines. The way he uses his
wealth is one of his better qualities meant to counteract some of his worse

Pros And Cons Of The Removal Of Confederate Monuments
The removal of the Confederate soldier monuments and memorials, such as the Robert E. Lee statue,
and the Confederate Soldiers Monument in Tampa, Florida are sparking massive debates across the
nation. Southern communities such as Virginia and South Carolina are being pressured by citizens into
removing the Confederate monuments in the town square, claiming that the monuments are a brutal
reminder of America s history of slavery. Despite the monuments representation of American history,
this is a national debate. Inn some states this has emerged into a deadly conflict in the streets, due to
the violent protests and riots in the town square.
The Confederate soldier, Robert E. Lee, his statue was dedicated on May 21, 1924 at the Gala of the
Confederate Soldiers in Charlottesville, Virginia. The sponsor s dedicated the monument to the lost
cause (Dearstyne, Washington Post) of the Civil War; to the valiant fight the Confederate Soldiers
displayed while fighting for their land, and way of life. The issue of slavery was carefully avoided
during the dedication speech. Furthermore, the Confederate Memorial in Tampa, Florida was created
in tribute to the Confederate soldiers who fought for their way of life, their plantations, homes, and
beloved land. This memorial was dedicated on February 9, 1911. The Robert E. Lee monument was
commissioned by a businessman and philanthropist named Paul Goodloe McIntire, who was born and
raised in Charlottesville, Virginia. McIntire also

The Song Of Roland Analysis
Hatred and Wealth
Many readers of The Song of Roland find that the hatred and belittling of Roland and Ganelon is very
evident but is not really explained why they hate each other. It is easily seen they have a relationship
as step father and step son that can be quite full of altercations in most cases yet, Roland is still not
letting friends such as Oliver talk about Ganelon even when they have noticed being set up for death.
The scholar T. Atkinson Jenkins has looked into reasons for the hatred and treason that occur in the
journal Why Did Ganelon Hate Roland? Jenkins provides many options to Ganelon s hatred for
Roland. To me the most illuminating thing is the way hatred mostly likely was built on wealth, and
today many people find the same reasons to be jealous and even hate others.
Throughout the Jenkins essay he uses the Ganelon prosecution which was not read in class, but can be
summarized best as Ganelon revoking being a traitor, and stating, It was Roland who cheated me of
gold and goods; and so I made him suffer and die... (Unknown 1310). His fellow kinsmen asked king
Charlemagne to set Ganelon free and Charlemagne is distraught by their words and calls all the men
traitors (1311). Jenkins finds most every account of Ganelon and Roland participating in name calling,
and crazily in the passage no one seems to pay any attention to the disgrace. Throughout the essay
Jenkins finds quotes such as my poor imitation of a father (120) from using words such as

Respiratory Failure Essay
This form of respiratory distress is commonly seen in premature newborns because their lungs are
immature and do not have enough surfactant to keep the lungs open. It is seen almost immediately
after birth or in the few hours following birth.
Cause
This decrease in surfactant causes the infant work harder to draw air into the lungs, which leads to low
oxygenation to the rest of the body s organs. The more premature the infant, the greater the chance of
developing RDS; other factors include previous baby s with RDS, a mother with diabetes, C section or
early delivery, a fast labor, a multiple fetus pregnancy and/or any problems that would reduce or
disrupt blood flow to the infant through the placenta.
Signs and Symptoms Symptoms can be seen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are also given supplemental warm, humidified oxygen but must be closely watched to avoid
toxicity. The doctor may also chose to use a CPAP machine to force air into the baby s nose, or a
mechanical ventilator if the infant is unable to breathe on its own.
Nursing Intervention
1. Monitor infant VS, note respiration rate, depth, lung sounds.
2. Administer supplemental oxygen as ordered.
3. Keep infant warm because premature infants are unable to regulate body temp
4. Administer IV fluids
5. Assess need for suction to clear mouth, nose, throat of mucus.
6. Monitor arterial blood gas
Nursing Diagnosis
1. Impaired gas exchange related to immature lungs
2. Ineffective breathing pattern
3. Impaired spontaneous ventilation
4. Risk for unstable blood glucose
Long Term RDS worsens from days 2 7 (Neonatal) and if an infant dies from the complication it is
usually during this time period. Other long term problems include bleeding into the lungs or brain,
issues with the development of the lungs, blood clots, mental disability due to lack of oxygen, and
possible blindness or eye

  • 2. Mobile Payment Technologies By Robert Warner Mobile Payment Technologies Robert Warner ISM3011 Florida Atlantic University April 9, 2016 The advent of the internet connected smartphone has opened up a whole new world for the consuming public as they now have access to the world of ecommerce in the palms of their hands. As more personal data became transferred to these mini computers, the competing interests of more intrusive applications continue to clash with the need for greater security and data integrity. One of these areas of conflict has been in the field of mobile payments where there has been the desire to use the personal financial information stored on a smartphone to conduct business transactions in a convenient yet secure manner. Recently, technological advancements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... NFC devices can simultaneously support the following three modes of operation. Reader/writer mode which allows the NFC device to read and/or write passive NFC tags and stickers P2P mode which allows the NFC device to send and receive data to and from other NFC peers which has been used for several years as the Android Beam file transfer feature Card emulation mode allows the NFC device to act as an NFC card. This can now be accessed by an external NFC reader such as an NFC enabled point of sale terminal. Magnetic secure transmission employs the technology of electromagnetism to transmit payment card data to payment terminals that are equipped with traditional magnetic stripe readers. This essentially turns every traditional point of sale terminal that s used for swipe card transactions into a potential contactless payment system without the need to modify or upgrade the hardware. The MST technology was developed by LoopPay, a small development company that was acquired by Samsung in February 2015 and is the driver behind Samsung Pay. Electricity is passed through a small metal coil inside the smartphone which generates a magnetic field that can now communicate with standard magnetic payment card readers. The phone can now emulate the physical process of swiping a card through the point of sale terminal allowing for the same familiar transaction process without the need to produce and swipe the actual card. • 3. Causes Of Eyewitness Testimony Intellectuals and experts alike share a common belief that the most significant cause of unjust convictions is due to inaccurate eyewitness testimonies. Scepticism of the validity of eye witness testimonies has increased dramatically; scientific credibility of forensic evidence has weakened its reliability. Thus, resulting in this being the dominant root of false convictions (Coolican, 1996). In 2007, The Innocence Project stated that over 75% of unjust convictions contained eye witness testimonies (Innocence Project, 2007). Further studies have also had comparable results, for example Brandon Davies (1973). Is it feasible that an individual s memory is so imprecise that it is unreliable in producing faultless memory recall? Furthermore, if memory is so undependable why is it still frequently used in the criminal justice system today if the consequence is innocent people being incarcerated? Historically, eyewitness testimony has been frequently practised, and has played a consequential role in the conviction of criminals. Monumental amounts of unsolved crimes lacking sufficient evidence has meant that an eyewitness testimony could help secure a much needed verdict in an otherwise unsolvable crime. However, in this contemporary society, experts claim that many factors can be responsible for faulty eyewitness testimony. For example, post incident events, most specifically suggestive police strategy (Brace and Byford, 2012). Milgram s (1963) study into obedience highlighted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This report compared and described how sexual assault can effect students and nonstudents, but it focused mainly on females with the male as the offender. The findings are from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which collects information on nonfatal crimes reported and not reported to police against persons age 12 or older (Langton Sinozich, 2014, p. 1). When it comes to punishments, they must be more severe and certain or else things like this will continue to happen. We also need to focus on getting those who are assaulted to let someone know. There are people here for them that can help, even if they don t think they need help, they do. Sexual assault is a serious crime that affects both females and males at any age. Cigarettes and marijuana are very common uses of smoking. As a college student I am able to the effects these two drugs have on students mental and physical abilities. People shouldn t smoke because not only does smoking affect your everyday way of live but they may also kill you. People who become addicted to these certain substances know the risks but don t care because they are mentally attached to the drugs that destroy their body. Marijuana affects the brain the most while tobacco affects organs in your body. According to the article Weed Smoke VS. Cigarette Smoke: Which is worse? By Delilah Butterfield When it comes to the of smoking, research suggests that tobacco is far more harmful to the lungs than cannabis. Both marijuana and tobacco increase the chances of lung cancer. People who are under 55 had an increased chance increased chance in forming a type of lung cancer (Morris). If are diagnosed with asthma then these two substances can make your breathing problem 90% worse than what it was. Most smokers don t even know what they are smoking in reality. Tobacco and marijuana are made to calm the nerves of the human body (They are downers) but, they also are made of multiple poisonous and chemical substances. Tobacco contains chemicals like Nicotine (the addictive drug that produces the effect that people are looking for and one of harshest chemicals in tobacco smoke), Hydrogen cyanide, Lead, Arsenic, Ammonia, Radioactive elements, carbon monoxide, etc. (3, The American Cancer Society) All of these elements put together form one of the deadliest products that is sold all over the world, called a cigarette. • 7. Food Industry And Its Effects On The Health And Prosperity... Engineered Food Technology and industrialization of the food industry have changed how food is grown, and altered its nutritional value. Multinational organizations are making decisions that affect the health and prosperity of people worldwide. These organizations have found ingenuous ways of packaging and marketing unsafe products to the public. Education and awareness of the problems are the only hope for improving the food industry and the quality of food. Industrialization of food began with the advent of fast food chains. The McDonald brothers were the first to introduce assembly line food processing. By assigning each employee one task to perform they were more efficient, and they paid those employees less than employers who expected an employee to perform start to finish tasks. The food industry implemented the assembly line approach, quickly changing how food is processed, and decreasing the pay rate for workers. Meat processing once regarded as a profession performed by skilled butchers, now it is a highly dangerous job filled by minority or illegal immigrants willing to take health and deportation risks for a very low wage. Efficiency and cost drives all bad behavior across the food industry. (Kenner, 2008) Cattle once raised on grass and grains now feed on liquefied protein, liquefied fat and corn. The calves are still grass fed until they reach 400 500 pounds; they are then sold to stocker operators who start feeding corn to the cattle. This is an unnatural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many of the simple things can be easily over looked, and while rushing out even more can be forgotten. Children can easily leave things plugged in and parents can forget to turn the light switches off. Fossil fuels are wasted each time someone forgets to conserve energy. This is a problem because fossil fuels are nonrenewable. This means that they can not be produced at the rate in which they are used. People of the United States should not have to worry about when fossil fuels are going to run out. The Environmental Protection Agency, also known as the EPA, should be given more control over how energy should be made. By doing so the EPA would be promoting the use of solar power to help make renewable and lasting energy. Solar power is a great use of alternative fuel because it protects the earth from further harm, it allows the earth to be protected and assures lasting power for the future. Overview of the Problem Nonrenewable energy is a problem in the United States. Wars have been fought for the use of oil and other nonrenewable resources. One article even suggests that, The energy crisis of the 1970 s drove up gasoline prices, sent the economy into a tailspin and prompted lawmakers and government agencies to develop new energy polices. The prisoner s dilemma is only briefly touched upon in this novel, but I was intrigued enough to want to peruse a further analysis. In this paper the prisoner s dilemma will be further analyzed using probability prediction methods. The Prisoner s Dilemma was developed in the 1950s by game theorists Dresher and Flood. These theorists were working to determine the possibility of intercontinental nuclear warfare. It was developed during experiments that tested to see how people behaved in particular situations. Additionally, it can be used in order to introduce a new trait to the crop that would not be usually naturally occurring. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, in order for geneticists to identify a gene of interest, they start by looking at other potential organisms. The geneticist has to identify the trait they desire the organism to have and must find any other organisms that already contain that gene. Finding a novel gene of interest requires intensive research into that gene as well as luck. As an example, if a scientist wanted a gene that improved the nutrient composition of a plant, they would look through many organisms that they believed that produces that specific nutrient, additionally if a scientist wanted a crop to have a gene that allows it to survive in drought conditions, they would most likely look for an organism living in those persistently hotter conditions. Additionally, this also involves testing in order to find the organism with the most ideal and worthy trait. Secondly, in order to isolate a gene of interest, comparative gene analysis must be done in order to locate and decode the specific organisms gene of interest. Whole genome alignment is done with plants that have and do not have the gene to pinpoint the regions of difference, and if there are no pre sequenced genomes available to perform comparison tests, scientists will use gene knockouts on the plant genome till the characteristic of interest is gone, thus identifying the gene that generates the ... In Andre Bazin s essay, The Ontology of The Photographic Image , he argues that one of the defining characteristics and inherent motivations in the production of art and artifacts, be it the mummification of Pharaohs, portraits of Kings and Emperors, is the preservation of life by a representation of life (Bazin 238). He elaborates that at the heart of the plastic arts, such as painting and sculpture, is a need to make immortal the mortal and to turn the image of our flesh into clay, steel and paint. Bazin s essay touches on our need and motives to transform ourselves and preserve our being beyond its physical existence. He focuses on how photography is the purest form of capturing reality and how the arrival of cinema challenges itself with preserving life as it is or was, without the alteration and manipulation from editing. Points of Interest Although most of Bazin s essay is very interesting to read, there are a few points that I felt stand out within the essay. Bazin explains that painting, in its attempt in the production of realism, encountered a problem in combining both the representation of the spiritual reality or the emotionally reality with the representation of the physical reality. Bazin notes that painting can successfully represent the emotionally reality, but that the reproduction of the physical reality will always lean towards and illusion. The manner in which these men ¡§reign¡¨ over the city by killing, and that ordinary dwellers are imprisoned within their homes for fear of death shows the evil impacts of war. The theme of death and violence is another important segment in indicating the evils of war. Each individual is engaged in killing their enemies and struggling for their own lives. As seen through the view of the sniper, the people¡¦s lives are centred around killing and death. Lifestyle, even to the extent of lighting a cigarette becomes risky and could lead to death. Citizens are forced to be locked in their homes for fear of being shot. • 22. The Earthquake Of Central Nepal 1. Introduction A Mw7.8 earthquake struck the Gorkha region of central Nepal on the 25th April 2015 (11:56 am local time). The initial tremor was followed by a series of Mw 6 aftershocks including a Mw7.3 event on the 12th May 2015. Together, this series of earthquakes have been termed the Gorkha earthquake sequence (Collins and Jibson, 2015). The Mw7.3 aftershock killed an estimated 160 people, which is in addition to a ~8,600 death toll for the main Mw7.8 event (Kargel et al., 2016). Up to 6% of these deaths were attributed to the secondary hazard of landsliding (CEDIM, 2015). The advent of satellite imagery coupled with Geographic Information Systems has enabled the quick mapping of earthquake induced landsliding (Xu et al., 2013). ... Consequently, in future hazard surveys remote sensing could identify the land characterises of landslides in cloud free areas and use this data to direct traditional methods of field data collection (i.e. helicopters) to hot spots of greater landslide susceptibility. This report will explore and test this hypothesis using a large landslide dataset collected during the Gorkha earthquake series , Nepal, 2015. 1.1. Study area Nepal is situated on the Himalayan arc where the Indian plate subducts the Eurasian plate at a convergence rate of ~20 mm yr 1 (Goda and Jibson., 2015). Nepal is classified as a less developed country where landsliding severely stunts its development (Petley et al., 2006). With reference to Fig. 1 this report has limited the study area to the (7) districts: Dhading, Dolakha, Gorkha, Lamjung, Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Sindhupalcho. Together these districts have a total land area of 14,564 km2 (representing ~10% of Nepal proper) with an elevation range 189 m to 7,922 m. Within this study area n=4,201 landslides occurred as a result of the Mw7.8 and Mw7.3 events. The movie tells the story of a young girl, Pai, and her grandfather Karo, who must struggle with adapting a patriarchal Maori legend with the Pai s seeming affinity with sacred traditions. The music in this movie underscores each scene and leaves the viewer feeling moved emotionally. Music tells the audience how they should be feeling and what emotions they should be experiencing. It adds scale and dramatizes events. Music in movies is crucial to manipulate our emotions towards the scene. Incorporating music into films will not only make the final outcome more interesting, but it also allows the audience the ability to connect emotionally to characters and their situation, also reinforcing the story and/or message. Music can also work very well to make clear the heritage of a character/group of characters or the geographic setting of the movie or a scene. If for example Chinese or Japanese sounding music can be heard during a certain scene, the audience can easily spot where it is taking place without the need of visually establishing the location too much. William Faulkner sets an intense mood at the beginning of the story when announcing the death of Miss Emily Grierson. Not many stories start off with death, but in this case, Emily s death is a very important key point to the story. The narrator manipulates time in the way he tells the story. The narrator starts off with with Emily s death and continues the story with the past, the late past, and the past past. This time manipulation is very important to set the themes of the story. Analysis Of The Skill Of Self-Confidence In his TedTalk The Skill of Self Confidence (15:40), Dr. Ivan Joseph discusses the importance of having faith in oneself and how confidence is ultimately a result of our attitudes/actions. He begins with a story about how, after winning the National Championship as a college soccer coach, he faced hundreds of parents and players that wanted to be apart of his team. However, despite the great skills they brought to the actual game, he was more concerned with their self confidence, as he felt that that was the determining factor of whether or not they would be great players for his team. The entire talk sits upon that foundation; if one has confidence in their own abilities to overcome any given obstacle, they will be successful in whatever they choose to do. He clarifies that self confidence is a skill rather than a trait because he believes it can be learned. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Joseph s message can be applied to almost any element of our class. Self confidence is needed in business communication, leadership, self protection, and general everyday operations. In the corporate world, it is important that an employee is sure of themselves and what they are working for. As we have learned, goal oriented workers are the most productive, and open communication is necessary for a healthy setting. Both of these involve self confidence; when setting a goal, a leader must be confident in their abilities to help staff members achieve it. Those who actually carry out the tasks must be confident enough to do so without hesitation or self doubt. • 26. State Repression Research Paper Shortly after the murder of LaPorte, the Canadian government established harsh state repression, not only in Quebec, but all over Canada. The government s explanation for this aggressiveness was the belief that state repression would bring a stop to the current terrorist attack. Once the FLQ was stopped and James Cross was recovered, there was also the belief that the state repression stopped future terrorist attacks from happening in Canada. The question we are thus faced with is whether state repression decreases the number of future attacks after the repression has taken place. To answer this question, we could conduct a causal experiment on the effect of state repression on terrorist attacks. The start of the experiment would be to gather the group that one will be looking at for the experiment. In the case of the experiment on the effect of state repression on terrorist attacks, one would need to look at states that face terrorism. The treatment for the experiment groups would be the repression. The next step in the experiment would be determining what measurements we will be taking. Tim Winton s novel Dirt Music explores universal experiences and the fragility of the human condition, enabling the extrapolation of many personal readings due to its textual integrity. A personal reading foregrounds self imposed solitude catalysed by paralysis from grief and traumatic events, which results in emotional suppression and deterioration of identity. Post modern globalisation exacerbates such alienation to marginalise non conformists by preventing fulfilling human connections. Thus, painful cathartic processes are required to resolve the detriments of disconnection through immersion into restorative landscapes to confront the past and heal. Trauma can lead to an individual s desire for isolation from the physical world as a coping mechanism to medicate grief and loss. Tim Winton s novel Dirt Music portrays the healing story of Georgie and Lu who painfully confront their pasts to reinvigorate life. Solitude imposed by the oblivion of virtuality is articulated when Georgie swims with the dog by the metaphor and emotional adjectives, she lay back in the water, wishing some portal would open, that she might click on some dopey icon and proceed safely, painlessly, without regret or memory, highlighting the artificial suppression of emotions as alleviation from the debilitating consequences of grief. The Court, also, held that the Federal Constitution s eighth amendment s cruel and unusual punishment clause is not violated by the execution of mentally retarded defendants (Cook 869). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... High reliabilities are especially needed for tests used for individual assessment such as in court cases (Sattler 26). Each IQ test incorporates a standard error of measurement, which is the variation between the obtained score and the true score. This difference is sometimes as much as fifteen points. Thus, the IQ score obtrained by a defendant is only one of many possible scores that may be achieved with different sample questions or the same questions at a different time (Rumley 1334). Should a mentally retarded defendant with an IQ of 70 be exempt from the death penalty when his score could range anywhere from 85 to 55? I vehemently believe that a blanket exemption from the death penalty because of an unreliable IQ score is wrong. In addition, Grossman states that the IQ s of mentally retarded persons do not remain constant. Studies have shown great fluctuation in IQ scores for such reasons as fatigue or illness. Numerous studies indicate that motivational factors can affect IQ scores (Grossman 26 27). Certainly a defendant facing the death penalty would be highly motivated to do poorly on an IQ test knowing that a score of 70 or below could save him from the death penalty. However, in part due to the Reagan presidency and regime changes, starting 1981 we have seen a steady rise in economic inequality in America between the haves and the have not s. Economic inequality is only emphasized as data shows severely concentrated gains as those in the top .1 and .01 percent earn[ing] four and a half, and nearly seven times, respectively, that of their counterparts of three decades earlier (234). McAdam and Kloos only emphasizes this growing inequality over a multitude of statistics that offers compelling evidence that convinces me that not only economic inequality has been on the rise for some years now but also shows that there is a possible connection to the slow release revolution of the Reagan administration. While I do not believe that all economic inequality can be traced back to the Reagan administration, I do believe that it had a key part in changing the political landscape that would only seek to provide a prime breeding ground for economic inequality to flourish in America. Poverty also has a way of rising health inequality, as those with lower income do not have the discretionary spending ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Persuasive Essay On Weightlifting Weight training is vital to your sports performance, because if you are matched with someone in skill, then it will take speed, power, and strength to defeat your opponent on the court, field or in the ring. Some athletes even coaches and trainers get confused with the deference between, bodybuilding or muscle building vs. weight training for strength and power for specific sports. For example having huge muscular legs does NOT mean you can jump very high, or run very fast; increased jumping ability comes from being able to lift with speed. If the weight continues to increase and the speed stays the same, power and vertical jumping ability will increase only if you maintain your body weight. When using weight lifting for sports the main goal is to improve and strengthen movements in your sport. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So if you do dead lifts, squats, power cleans, snatches, clean and jerk, vertical jumps, depth jumps, lunges, calve raises, you will help target and strengthen the jumping muscles in you legs and some in your upper body. Next time you do these exercises try for an extra rep or 2 on you all out max set(s) or multiple power sets. • 42. The Issue Of Illegal Immigration Illegal immigration has become an explosive issue in the U.S. Many people have debated fervently in their disapproval of illegal immigration, whereas others defend it just as ardently. The church and Christian religion/theology has been drawn into the fray over illegal aliens as well, with Christians on both sides seeking to validate their positions based on their own individual beliefs. I interviewed many different people with equally varying opinions on the matter. Over the past few months, many people, old and young, have been educated on the ethical dilemma that immigration has caused; especially due to the Syrian refugee crisis. Every person I interviewed had valid statements about the issue that is affecting the United States and the World. The majority of people I interviewed were Christian; however, one person was an Atheist and another was Agnostic. I found their opinions extremely interesting for the fact that their opinions were morally based and not spiritually. I did ask in depth of the Christian interviewees about how their religious and spiritual view affects the view of this controversial issue. Some used the law of the land as an important aspect. They believe that those who illegally enter any country violate that nation s laws as well as the laws of God. Believers are torn between showing compassion and mercy to the illegal immigrants who seek help and not wanting to disrupt God s word. The government expects private citizens to act as law enforcement. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

New designs and components will require high resolutions for monitoring health and structural characteristics and also to test their performance. The quality of new devices directly implies on the level which we can measure their performance. Conventional techniques which have been lasting for so long will not provide the high resolutions needed for new and advancing designs for the measurements of different quantities, mainly strain. Some of the conventional methods like Classic foil strain gauges and accelerometers have been trusted and used for several years to measure the strains on various buildings, air planes, human body, and many others, which end up failing during harsh conditions. Fiber optic strain sensors will not fail whereas the conventional strain sensors might fail during some conditions. Fiber optic strain sensors have high resolution and are immune to electromagnetic interference and can survive high temperatures, and bad weather conditions. Also, the fiber optic strain sensor has 25 times better gauge factor than that of the conventional sensors. There are two types of fiber optic strain sensors whose mechanical and optical properties changes when there is an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The Power Of Power In Les Miserables And The Kite Runner What is power? Power has been the demise of leaders, empires, and the cause of war. Can power be used for good? Both Les Miserables and The Kite Runner can be juxtaposed to show power, what it is, and what it can be used for. Les Miserables and The Kite Runner show that power is subjective, and has many different interpretations. Merriam Webster dictionary has many definitions of power. Power could be considered the ability to produce an effect, or physical might, or even possession of control, authority, or influence over others. Wealth is a form of power. We see two different elements of this in both selections of literature. In Les Miserables, Jean Valjean, the former convict, uses wealth that he acquires under the name Mayor Madeleine to provide jobs for his constituents in a factory that he owns. Valjean used his power through wealth to empower many others to make their own wealth. This use of power is noble and just. Instead of giving others money or gifts, he gives them the gift of empowering themselves through sustainable work. This is a redeeming moment of Jean Valjean s character, contrasting his past as a convict. Baba is the father of Amir, the protagonist in The Kite Runner. He is a man of great influence, and possesses a strong moral compass. Baba is a very well written, realistic character. He is not restricted to good or bad, but blurs the lines. The way he uses his wealth is one of his better qualities meant to counteract some of his worse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Pros And Cons Of The Removal Of Confederate Monuments The removal of the Confederate soldier monuments and memorials, such as the Robert E. Lee statue, and the Confederate Soldiers Monument in Tampa, Florida are sparking massive debates across the nation. Southern communities such as Virginia and South Carolina are being pressured by citizens into removing the Confederate monuments in the town square, claiming that the monuments are a brutal reminder of America s history of slavery. Despite the monuments representation of American history, this is a national debate. Inn some states this has emerged into a deadly conflict in the streets, due to the violent protests and riots in the town square. The Confederate soldier, Robert E. Lee, his statue was dedicated on May 21, 1924 at the Gala of the Confederate Soldiers in Charlottesville, Virginia. The sponsor s dedicated the monument to the lost cause (Dearstyne, Washington Post) of the Civil War; to the valiant fight the Confederate Soldiers displayed while fighting for their land, and way of life. The issue of slavery was carefully avoided during the dedication speech. Furthermore, the Confederate Memorial in Tampa, Florida was created in tribute to the Confederate soldiers who fought for their way of life, their plantations, homes, and beloved land. This memorial was dedicated on February 9, 1911. The Robert E. Lee monument was commissioned by a businessman and philanthropist named Paul Goodloe McIntire, who was born and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia. McIntire also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Song Of Roland Analysis Hatred and Wealth Many readers of The Song of Roland find that the hatred and belittling of Roland and Ganelon is very evident but is not really explained why they hate each other. It is easily seen they have a relationship as step father and step son that can be quite full of altercations in most cases yet, Roland is still not letting friends such as Oliver talk about Ganelon even when they have noticed being set up for death. The scholar T. Atkinson Jenkins has looked into reasons for the hatred and treason that occur in the journal Why Did Ganelon Hate Roland? Jenkins provides many options to Ganelon s hatred for Roland. To me the most illuminating thing is the way hatred mostly likely was built on wealth, and today many people find the same reasons to be jealous and even hate others. Throughout the Jenkins essay he uses the Ganelon prosecution which was not read in class, but can be summarized best as Ganelon revoking being a traitor, and stating, It was Roland who cheated me of gold and goods; and so I made him suffer and die... (Unknown 1310). His fellow kinsmen asked king Charlemagne to set Ganelon free and Charlemagne is distraught by their words and calls all the men traitors (1311). Jenkins finds most every account of Ganelon and Roland participating in name calling, and crazily in the passage no one seems to pay any attention to the disgrace. Throughout the essay Jenkins finds quotes such as my poor imitation of a father (120) from using words such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Respiratory Failure Essay This form of respiratory distress is commonly seen in premature newborns because their lungs are immature and do not have enough surfactant to keep the lungs open. It is seen almost immediately after birth or in the few hours following birth. Cause This decrease in surfactant causes the infant work harder to draw air into the lungs, which leads to low oxygenation to the rest of the body s organs. The more premature the infant, the greater the chance of developing RDS; other factors include previous baby s with RDS, a mother with diabetes, C section or early delivery, a fast labor, a multiple fetus pregnancy and/or any problems that would reduce or disrupt blood flow to the infant through the placenta.
