You Just Dont Understand By Deborah Tannen
Every day, at home or at workplaces, people engage in conversations involving the opposite gender.
How does gender play a critical role in a conversation? Reasonings behind the existence of genderlect
are quite complex. Bill Cosby once said Men and women belong to different species and
communication between them is a science still in it infancy (Eisenberg). Men and women are born
with the same brains. However, the way they function differently when having conversations. When
men and women communicate, men mostly use the left side of their brains while women are capable
of using both sides explaining the excellent in their multi tasking skills. Surprisingly, biological
differences are not responsible for the genderlect, but the social norms and cultural backgrounds.
These factors further differentiate conversations between men and women. Deborah Tannen, professor
of linguistics at Georgetown University has written extensively on genderlect in her national best
selling book, You Just Don t Understand: Women and Men in Conversation. In her book (Tannen,
1990), she explores in depth about different conversational styles of men and women with relatable
examples. She also suggests some steps that could be taken to relieve people s frustrations towards
each other s differences. Tannen s focus is mainly on the sociolinguistic side of linguistics and the
verbal communication. According to the book (1990), genderlect can be caused by the difference in
the environments people

Making My Fashion Dreams Become A Reality
Growing up surrounded by historical landmarks, creative arts, and Southern charm, I have always
been an admirer of fashion and beauty. When I was a young child of five years, I would continually
play dress up and dream of becoming a Fashionista that assists movie stars and social elite for their
red carpet appearances. I wanted to contribute to others in seeing the beauty in themselves and the
world around them. After about eighteen years, nothing has really changed within my mind set. Today,
I still dream of working in the fashion industry, but more importantly, making a difference in the
world. In the process of making my fashion dreams become a reality, at seventeen, I secured
enrollment at Northeast Mississippi Community College majoring in fashion merchandising. My first
two years at junior college were wonderful, and I thoroughly enjoyed participating in the arts, being
the Captain of the Tiger Dancers and Pom Squad, playing as a member of the tennis team, and
supporting Prentiss county as Miss Hospitality 2013. These years taught me time management like no
other while also leading me down the path of self expression and competitiveness. Finding immense
knowledge and encouragement from professors in little classrooms and civilians in a small Mississippi
town perfected my willingness to strive to do my utmost best in every circumstance, whether it be
reaching my goals or helping others. Attending Northeast Mississippi Community College opened for
me a world of

The Era Of The 1920s
The 1920s was a pivotal era in women s fashion an era that saw Prohibition, Jazz and celebration of
war s end. Gone was the hourglass figure of the 19th Century, swept away by the World War I, and
replaced by the figure of a modern, independent woman. This book covers fashions from 1920 to
1924, an often overlooked period of fashion which was a time of transition between the draped and
layered fashions of the post World War I era and the free and easy gowns of the jazz age flapper.
Before the Roaring Twenties, women were still wearing floor length dresses with corsets, and
crinolines, arms and legs were covered, hair was long. This Gibson girl look was set the standard for
beauty, fashion and manner. And the Victorian attitudes toward dress and etiquette created a strict
moral climate.
Until 1920s things changed quickly, the women was given the right to vote, they began to attend
college. The Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1923. The World War I was over and men
wanted their jobs back. Women, though, who had taken up men s jobs while they were at war, had
proved themselves worthy of men s jobs, so many organizations and feminist reformers took up the
task to encourage gender equality.
Many important things happened in the 1920 s like prohibition and jazz music. Something that is also
very significant is that this was the decade where fashion began entering a modern era. After decades
of Victorian style, clothing such as corsets and petticoat, fashion was finally

Mise En Scene Monologue
The exposition of the plot begins with a long shot of a relatively big private boat operated by a large
crew of servants. In the following shot the viewer is introduced to Mr. Andrews who is just being
informed about his daughter being on hunger strike. In the following shot we see Alexander Andrews
trying to comfort his daughter. Through their dialog the viewer learns about the fact that Ellie has
recently officially married and is being retained on the boat against her will because her father opposes
the marriage. We also learn that Ellie feels like she has always been denied her will by her father and
that her father supposes she only wants to marry King to anger him. The Mise en Scène of the first
scenes establishes the Andrew s social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without Peter saving Ellie all the time, her journey to New York would have ended very quickly. At
first Peter had to protect Ellie from herself and others and when he is gone, a different male has to take
the position of the male guidance in Ellie s life to protect her; this role is taken by her father. Even
though she knew she would be unhappy with King, her father had to interfere with the wedding to
`save` her from marrying the wrong man. It Happened One Night [...] a film that restores patriarchal
authority by redeeming Mr. Andrews and aligning him with Peter; both of them together know what s
best for the errant daughter (Maltby 1998: 155) (Mizejewski 70). The women we meet during the
course of the story is the opposite of how she is presented in the exposition. Ellie Andrews, who at
first seemed to be a loud, rebellious, strong, and independent woman, representing the concept of the
New Women , has turned out be extremely dependent on male guidance and protection. She seems
incapable of taking care of herself and therefore represents the failure of the New Woman. Therefore,
Capra s hidden indication of the failure of the New Women match the theory of feminist scholars
working in the field of pop and visual culture that productions reflect social ideologies and promote
patriarchal systems. Capra s failure of the New Women matches men historically demanding
traditional gender roles during the worst of the Great

The Highest Amount Of Gun Control Laws
Daniel Danzo
Research Paper America has the highest amount of gun related deaths each year in the world. In
Germany 381, in France 255, in Canada 165 in the United Kingdom 68, in Australia 65, in Japan 39
and in the United States, 11,127 (Moore Michael, 51:15 51:48). Since the United States has the
highest number of deaths, it is important to have gun control laws that restrict people from owning
dangerous firearms like machine guns. Gun control laws should support both sides of the debate. Of
course, both sides will not be completely happy with the laws created, but America should have a
balance. In 2008, a poll was taken stating: Adult poll respondents views on the meaning of the Second
Amendment; An individual s right to bear arms: Republican 51% and Democrats 41% (The History of
the Right to Bear Arms). Today, the United States is more divided on gun control than it has ever been.
The Second Amendment states: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (Milestones in Federal Gun
Control Legislation). Unless the Second Amendment is changed, we cannot take the right from others
to own guns. However, the government should regulate the types of gun Americans can own and who
can own a gun because times have changed and American s mental health system is broken.
Decades ago, the United States was once a country where a gun was considered to survive and protect.

How Did Machiavelli s Political Views Influence American...
In The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, Machiavelli writes about 16th century principalities and how
its princes should act. However, while these ideals may seem dated, Machiavelli s description holds
many similarities and differences to American politics today. Machiavelli s views on republics serve
as the first difference between his political views and the American government. Machiavelli generally
puts those in a republic in a negative light by claiming that the subjects of a republic are not used to
standing up for themselves and cannot agree to give themselves a leader. Therefore, it is not a sturdy
government to capture. Instead of finding the idea of no singular person being a leader a good way to
ensure statewide cooperation and content, Machiavelli claims that, In republics there is more vitality,
greater hatred, and more desire for vengeance, (Machiavelli, Chapter V). Which is a far cry to the
American government s oath to all of its freedoms and liberties. Machiavelli moves on to say that the
safest way to capture a republic state is to destroy it altogether. This shows his views on republics are
very much negative and that he believes they are almost a nuisance to a prince trying to maintain a
state. Of course this is a drastic difference to the American government, where its subjects thrive in a
republic. In other words, while Machiavelli believes no state could be maintained as a republic, the
American government proves that it could still be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This being said, it also holds many truths and even problems about America today, even though it is
written for a much older and ancient time. Although Machiavelli may have never thought for
government to become the way it is today, many could learn from his writings on how to better our
government one step at a time perhaps through learning from his teachings or against

The Pearl Harbor Attack
December 7, 1941 the Pearl Harbor attack was a big event in history that led to the US joining World
War II. It was a surprise attack, the attack lasted from 7:55 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The Japanese had over
2,000,000 ground troops and air fleets together that were trained, while the Americans had over
1,000,000 ground troops and air fleets all together which most of them were not trained at all. The US
was unprepared because they did not believe that the Japanese were on the verge of attacking the
United States but plans were made to attack against the United States as early as January 1941.
Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. All the planes on
the Japanese ships were fully fueled and armed. The attack planes came in two waves which were
approximately forty five minutes apart and more than 2,000 American soldiers and sailors died in the
attack, while about 1,000 were wounded. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next day after the attack president Franklin D. Roosevelt asked the congress to declare war on
japan. The congress soon approved his request. Germany and Italy were Japanese allies, they were
known as the Axis powers and three days later they also declared war on the United States. Great
Britain, France and Russia were Americas allies. Before the Americans joined the war they were only
committed to sending war supplies on loan to their allies. When the Japanese left the Americans didn t
know it was over, they were expecting another wave to hit. After two years of conflict it soon became
World War II. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor will always be a big event in history and it will also
be an unforgettable day for many. The Pearl Harbor memorial, known as the USS Arizona Memorial is

Benefits Of Donating To The Homeless
As the holidays roll around we often think of what presents to give our loved ones, what food to
prepare for the family get together, or the hopefulness for a white Christmas full of joy for the whole
family. Though all these are reasonably rewarding in their own way from getting the family together
to receiving gifts that you have always wanted, have you ever thought about just how rewarding it
would be to possibly save a person`s life just by giving them some clothing? Well if you are interested
in possibly saving a life there is a way to do so and that is called donating to the homeless. The United
Stated has one of the highest population of homeless people in the world. Though many think that

Pride In The Necklace
What exactly is pride? Pride is a great love of your accomplishments or the accomplishments of
somebody whose accomplishments you can claim as your own, like a daughter. This is one of the
relationships (mother daughter) that is altered, for the worse, by pride. Pride can be a wonderful tool
used to bring about confidence and give somebody the courage to step outside the relative comfort
zone they usually hold. However, that is not typically the case, for pride is usually found in excessive
amounts. This excessive pride leads to horrible consequences if one is not careful about hiding it. For
Meimei, Mathilde, and Doodle s brother, pride becomes a corrupting factor, damaging both their lives
and their relationships. Rules of the Game ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Doodle s brother suffered from pride, and although he was customarily kind to his brother and taught
him to walk, he did it for the wrong reasons. Furthermore, an expression of how terrible his brother
feels because of his pride is shown in a passage that says: They did not know that I did it for myself;
that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only
because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother (Hurst 389). This passage literally states that
Doodle s brother was pride s slave, and it was only because of this slavery that he had taught Doodle
how to walk. Nevertheless, this is not where his pride reaches its climax, and it is this extreme climax
of pride that definitely does the uttermost damage to their relationship. After receiving immense praise
from his family, Doodle s brother decides to push Doodle harder and harder, hoping that by doing this
Doodle will earn his the praise his pride demands. Furthermore, Doodle did reach his limit; he died
after being pushed, surpassing his natural limitations and being abandoned by the person who is
supposed to protect him. It is when this happens that the significance of the title is revealed, not when

Learning Assessment
This tool provides techniques for assessing student learning in a way that deepens their understanding,
enables their application of knowledge, and strengthens their ability to transfer their knowledge for
use in new settings.
Description
Learning is at the heart of assessing for transfer and application. This tool is defined by assessment
activities where students act because of their learning.
Two things much happen before assessing for transfer and application:
1. Learning outcomes must be stated in a way that captures the desired deeper understanding of
concepts and their relationships to one another.
2. Learning activities in the course have provided students an opportunity to use their knowledge in
context.

The general strategy for this type of assessment activity typically involves students writing,
developing, or creating, along with multiple opportunities for feedback and revision.
Assessment Strategies
There are many specific strategies that you can use to assess for application and transfer. No one
strategy will describe a student s ability. Multiple strategies will help best capture a student s progress.
Some of the strategies include:
Papers/Presentations. These approaches allow students to demonstrate their conceptually applied
knowledge either in a written or oral format.
Portfolio. Either electronic or in physical form, a portfolio is a collection of a students work, a
collective view of their various applications of knowledge.
Diverse problem sets and/or cases. These give students an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in
various settings with changing emphasis on different variables.
Simulations. Similar to diverse problem sets and cases, simulations allow for students to apply their
knowledge in a controlled environment. This can be better for learning than real world application as
the real world complexities can be temporarily simplified, allowing the student to focus on key
principles of skills. They also allow students to participate in new situations that require the use of
previously learned knowledge.
Real world application. (In all its complexity.) Field work,

Benefits of Attending Boarding School for the Arts
Some might ask why anyone would even begin to want to leave home for something like high school.
Why would you leave your home, your friends, your family? It is indeed a good question, one which I
will answer in this essay. The most important reason I want to go to boarding school is for the arts.
Don t get me wrong; I love my school. It is an arts magnet school, of course, and does have a partial
emphasis on them, but I want to go somewhere where the whole school is focused on what I love to do
most: perform. At GCHS, 70% of the students I ve met only care about sports. It s difficult to feel
passionate about something you love when everyone just shoots it down for important things. Of
course, the administration aren t like that, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The class selection is more diverse as well. Recently, they brought in a new class that essentially
allows students to play detective : Forensic science. Finally, there s one big difference between public
school and boarding school: Saturday classes. Walnut Hill has weekly Saturday classes, which take
place during Saturday morning. This gives you even more time to learn, also less free time, but it
keeps you busy you re always engaged, always learning, and never bored. Most boarding school
classes operate very differently from those at public school. At public school, your teachers get tired of
you trying to engage them with multiple questions they re there to teach, gosh dang it, not listen to
students and their stupid ramblings. At boarding school, the class structure is much less like a lecture
hall and much more like a conference meeting: everyone offers input and it s nearly impossible for
you to remain silent and unengaged. This means that you won t end up like the guy in front of me in
geometry who simply sits and scrolls Facebook because no one has enough time to just sit and discuss
his issues and grades with him. Boarding school also contains incredible resources. A weight room,
swimming pool, fully stocked library, and amazing theatre facilities are some of the ones at Walnut
Hill. Because you have such great resources, it s not difficult for one to find a good accelerated reader
book for English class, nor is it difficult to read up on that new

Abelard and Aquinas Essay
Peter Abelard was a renowned dialectician from 1079 to 1142. He subjected theological doctrines to
logical analysis. In other words, he used rational argument to discover truth. Saint Thomas Aquinas,
was a believer in the power of reason, giving St. Augustine s theory an alternate approach. He taught
in Paris and Italy during the years 1225 to 1274. Both of these new age thinkers changed the way
Catholic followers viewed the natural world.
Peter Abelard was one of the new thinkers that applied scholasticism to his theological aspects.
According to the excerpt Scholastic thinkers assumed that some teachings of Christianity, which thy
accepted as true by faith, could also be demonstrated to be true by reason (238). Peter ... Show more

His greatest work was
Summa Theologica. In this work he attempted to merge faith with reason, and the works of Aristotle
with the scriptures. Historically, he is seen as an alternate approach to St. Augustine s view of the city
of man versus the city of God. Augustine and Aquinas shared the belief that the original sin was Adam
and Eve s venture through the garden of good and evil. On page 239, Aquinas held that both faith and
reason came from God, they were not in opposition to each other; properly understood, they supported
each other.. He did not want people to shun the idea of reason, he wanted the world to see that it was
not evil. Combining Christianity with Aristotelian knowledge, he shed light upon the difficulty to
distinguish common ground between the natural world and the supernatural world. The excerpt is
divided into two different sections, Whether, Besides the Philosophical Sciences, Any Further
Doctrine Is Required? and Whether God Exists?. In the second section he proves five ways God exists
by using Aristotle s technique in philosophy, they are motion, nature of efficient cause, possibility and
necessity, the graduation to be found in things, and the governance of the world. The way he words his
logic is extremely confusing. For example, Now it is not possible that the same thing should be at one

Repentance Of Sinners In The Parable Of The Lost Sheep
How is Luke s claim on repentance of sinners in the Parable of the Lost Sheep being illustrated by the
differences in detail found, in comparison to the Gospels of Matthew and Thomas?
The Parable of the Lost Sheep is one of the many parables Jesus gave during his lifetime. It is found in
the two canonical gospels: Matthew 18:10 14 and Luke 15:3 10. It is also found in the non canonical
gospel of Thomas 107. It is about a shepherd who leaves his flock of ninety nine sheep behind to go
look for the one sheep that is lost. This context is similar in all of the three Gospels.
However, although there are similarities, there are also differences. These differences have an
implication for the message grasped by the readers. The focus will be on the repentance of sinners
claimed in the Gospel of Luke and how it differs from the messages found in the other two Gospels. I
will do this by analyzing the effect of the differences in language, symbolic representation, location of
the parable, audience, and the context in which it is written, found in these three Gospels.
In terms of symbolic presentation, Luke uses the word sinners to compare them to the sheep as seen in
verse 7, ...one sinner who repents... Jesus is giving a reason why he is friends of tax collectors and
sinners. This is because they are like the sheep, lost and need saving through repentance. In the Gospel
of Matthew, Jesus uses the words little ones . Jesus uses these words after giving a lesson about caring

The U.S. Flawed Immigration System Must be Reformed Essay
Memorandum

SUBJECT: Immigration Reform
The issue of illegal immigration has daunted this nation for many years. Currently, there are 11 million
illegal immigrants living in the United States. Immigration reform is necessary, but amnesty is not.
Last year, the United States Senate passed the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and
Immigration Modernization Act by a vote of 68 32. If this bill becomes law, America will still not
have fixed it s illegal immigration issue. There are many flaws to the current immigration bill in

Reforming the Legal Immigration and Visa System
The current U.S. legal immigration and visa system is inefficient and flawed. Immigrant workers who
would help grow the U.S. economy often face time consuming paperwork and bureaucratic nonsense.
The current immigration bill does not improve the legal immigration and visa system effectively.
Policies that would effectively reform the system are more H 1B visas, a streamlined application, a
reduction is fees. Currently, H 1B visas which are capped at 85,000 annually, should be raised as well
as simplified to renew. Highly educated and skilled workers benefit the U.S. economy and provide
companies great employees. A streamlined application will help make it simpler to obtain a visa. This
application would not reduce security measures that help ensure we are only allowing safe
immigrants, it would simply remove the time consuming nonsense that hold up most applications. The
expensive application process deters many first time applicants and H 1B workers from attempting to
re new their visas. Many well deserving applicants

Factors Affecting The Biodiversity Of The Lake
Many lakes across the globe are home to a wide variety of organisms, which are supported by both the
lakes themselves and by the abundance of varying habitats surrounding them. Lake Naivasha (0°45 N,
36°20 E) is one such lake: Situated within the rift valley, Lake Naivasha is a freshwater home to an
abundance of both native and alien flora and fauna, both aquatic and terrestrial (Otiang a Owiti Oswe,
2007). The lake has 3 main surface inflows; from the Malewa, Gilgil and Karati rivers, but is an
endorheic lake (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007); so is a closed hydrological system on the surface (Figure
1). Nevertheless, it is thought that water from the lake does move southward underground, through
volcanic rocks (Clarke et al., 1990, Ojiambo et al., 2001). There are various factors that contribute to
the biodiversity of the lake; however one the most predominant factors is the impact that the steep
increase in Naivasha s population has had on the lake. 70% of Kenya s horticultural output is
produced in the Lake Naivasha area (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007), which makes it an area of extreme
national economic importance. Due to this thriving industry, the lake s population has risen from an
estimated 7,000 in the 1969, to approximately 300,000 in 2007 (Ouma Oloo, 2007). This rapid
population growth has had effects on many components of the ecosystem, including changes in lake
levels and water composition, loss of habitats, introduction of alien species and decline in many

With respect to physical mobility in particular, the transportation is a key requirement to participate in
the life of the community and to access important goods and services. Transportation issues range
from being housebound due to lack of accessible transportation, to needing unavailable specialized
transportation, to extra costs arising from regular use of taxis because of inadequate public
transportation. Indirectly, consumers with mobility limitations may, overall, have fewer opportunities
to get out and make independent consumer decisions.
3. Why do you think entrepreneurship in a nation decline as its population ages? How could this
impact global marketing? * The cost of health care for elderly people is greater than educational costs
for the young. Hence, population aging will eventually place severe strains on government budgets for
health care and pension plans, and with fewer workers to pay the taxes. * Health may actually decline
due to the lifestyle changes of the urban environment, with its greater stresses and sedentary lifestyles.
At the same time, retirement means that income tax revenues required to fund these programs decline;
the economy shrinks. * For employers: there will have more employers on

Kurtz Political Corruption
Joseph Conrad an advocate for political corruption The adventure in the heart of darkness captures
image of the real world and underworld of how moral people can be. A summary of The Heart of
Darkness is that Marlow s is an ivory transporter down the Congo. Through his adventure, Marlow
finds out Kurtz is running a corrupt ivory scam company, and Marlow is shocked upon seeing what
the European corporations have done to the African people. The heart of darkness shows the time
between 1885 to 1908 (A very dark time period), and during this time Joseph wrote about his
experience in this era. The heart darkness contrasts Joseph and his character Marlow an advocate for
political corruption by him informing his crew what he feels on the voyage ... Show more content on

I think of Joseph Conrad writing this specifically for a sole reason to expose this. It was said that
Joseph Conrad also blamed the western part of the world (The united states also granted colonial
status to Congo Free State), also playing a role with King Leopold II of Belgium s government for
socio political reasons. A small connection I think can be made from this is the major rubber industry
and automobile industry starting in year 1900 having more to do with this corruption. Like kurtz said
to Marlow this is as necessary for success. The result of this corruption got 10 million Africans

Roselily Murder
Walker continues to use negative imagery and ideas to reveal her hesitation towards the arrangement.
The author uses these literary devices because she wants to illustrate Roselily s reasons for marrying
the man. Roselily does this because it is what s best for her and her children. In a way, Roselily is
being forced because she does not have a better alternative to her current life. By marrying the man,
Roselily will have a renewed lifestyle and reputation. Roselily imagines the flowers in her hand as
kids. When she does this, her head fills with murderous thoughts. A squeeze around the flowers in her
hands chokes off three and four and five years of breath (Walker 4). As guilty as Roselily feels, this
shows how Roselily wishes she never had given birth to any of her kids. When she tightens her grip
on the bouquet of flowers, she thinks of her children. Roselily dreams she did not give birth to these
kids. Roselily s ideas of murder could possibly be associated with her obsession with the idea of her
personal spirit being robbed from her. Weddings usually give off positive connotations, however in
Roselily s mind she disturbs the happy wedding with dark thoughts such as the idea of murder.
Deviating from the topic of personal spirit , Brent studies the ferocious thoughts swarming Roselily s
mind. Roselily s rebellious thoughts during the wedding ceremony go so far as to enter the realms of
murder and blasphemy. She expresses a wish that she could be free of her three

Rap As An Art Of Racism
All of the rappers shown in the documentary make music and use rap as an art of storytelling and form
of expression of what they have to go through and their struggle in their daily lives. Some of the social
issues and grievances that had been brought up are issues of gun violence, police brutality,
gentrification, economic discrepancy and immigration policies. All of these social issues and
grievances are issues that affected the society, especially those living in the malnourished
neighborhoods featured in the documentary. Some of them talked about how they watched their
friends died in the streets. For example, one of the rappers named YD showed the place where his
friends died. Issues of police brutality brought up so many times, especially in the lyrics written by
N3LL. Plus, Trick Daddy and Uncle Luke shared their experiences with the Overtown riot and how
Miami police officers beat a black businessman and killed him in the process. We can see how each
rapper in this documentary expressed the problems that they faced from police brutality to
immigration policies in the US through their lyrics.
Miami locals said that most people have not seen the real Miami may be because most people that
come to the South Beach only seen and enjoyed the entertainment there the nightclubs, strip clubs,
five stars hotels etc. Same as Times Square, people in Miami had been blinded by the entertainments
that prevent them to see the real problems faced by the society the poverty,

The Economic And Social Changes During The 1960s Under The...
Life in America began to undergo great economic and social changes during the 1980s under the
Reagan Administration. During this period of time, stagflation began to distress the US economy,
leaving millions of Americans to fall victim to homelessness and poverty. The unemployment rate had
reached its highest peak since the Great Depression, creating a major crisis for low income families
and other individuals concerning living conditions. The introduction of Reaganism into society
primarily focused on reducing the growth of government spending through the modulation of federal
income tax and reduction of government regulation to diminish inflation. Despite all attempts for
economic recovery, the US struggled to bounce back from the 1970s recession and in time led to the
significant rise in urban poverty. Uniquely, an American film director from the 1980s by the name of
John Carpenter produced a science fiction film, They Live, that served as a powerful and eye opening
depiction of his own personal views of Reaganism (Reaganomics). He essentially depicts our world to
be controlled by powerful elites who have created a repressive society that we are unwilling brought
to live and build in. He also clarifies how the majority of Americans during the 1980s were focused
primarily on materialism and how an individual s success was measured by the amount of money they
possessed. Carpenter s major criticisms of 1980s America included the impact of consumerism in
America as well as

Holland Tunnel Essay
Holland Tunnel
It has taken engineers thousands of years to perfect the art of digging tunnels. Today tunnels provide
available space for cars and trains, water and sewage, even power and communication lines. However,
before cars and trains, tunnels carried only water. The first to use tunnels on a major scale were the
Romans. Roman engineers created the most extensive network of tunnels in the ancient world. The
Romans built aqueducts to carry water from mountain springs to cities and villages; however, in many
instances there were obstacles, such as rock formations, in between the spring and the city of interest.
To solve these problems the Romans built tunnels by carving underground chambers and building
elegant arch structures to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there were drawbacks to a bridge crossing. A Hudson River bridge would require a
minimum clearance of 200 feet for ships to travel to and from the Hudson River ports. Since the
Manhattan side of the Hudson did not meet the 200 foot elevation requirement for a bridge, long
approaches would have to be built on the New York side. Because the land that was required for these
long approaches would require the purchase of very costly Manhattan real estate the bridge idea was
rejected in favor of a tunnel.
There are three basic steps to building a stable tunnel. The first step is excavation: engineers dig
through the earth with a reliable tool or technique. The second step is support: engineers must support
any unstable ground around them while they dig. The final step is lining: engineers add the final
touches, like the roadway and lights, when the tunnel is structurally sound.
Three main proposals were submitted for the Hudson river tunnel; The first proposal was a bi level
tunnel measuring 31 feet in diameter. The upper level, which was to carry slower vehicles, was to have
an 18½ foot wide roadway and a clearance of 12 feet, flanked by sidewalks measuring 4½ feet wide.
The lower level, which was to be reserved for express vehicles, was to have a 16 foot wide roadway
and a nine foot clearance. The second proposal which was presented by engineer George Goethals,
who would eventually become chief engineer of the Port Authority, and have the

Of Thomas Manns Tonio KroegerAnd Albert Camus s The Stranger
Thomas Mann s Tonio Kroeger and Albert Camus s The Stranger
Introduction
The literary characters of Meursault and Tonio Kroeger are likely depicted as outsiders in the novels
The Stranger by Albert Camus and Tonio Kroeger by Thomas Mann. The novels can both be described
as existentialist investigations. In the school of philosophy, existentialism seeks to investigate the
relationship between individuals and the society, the meaning of life, and the unavoidable conflicts in
interpersonal relationships among other inquisitions (Sleasman, 2014). Existentialism is evident in the
two novels under review as the characters are treated as outsiders.
Albert Camus The Stranger The concept of the outsider is demonstrated by the two lead characters
namely Meursault and Tonio Kroeger. In The Stranger, Meursault is depicted as an outsider both in
himself as well as the society as owing to his criminal tendencies as he battles to show emotions and
link with realities regarding his life (Sleasman, 2014). Meursault is depicted as much disconnected to
the current world and life either emotionally or socially. For instance, the opening scene shows how
Meursault reacts to his mother s death. His lack of remorse and loss is both salient and borders on the
pathological. By falling asleep during his mother s funeral; the action demonstrates the lack of
feelings and social competence which children are usually expected to show to their parents (Camus,
2012). Furthermore, he consents

Whistleblower Ethical Dilemmas
1.0 Introduction
According to (Williams, 2015), a moral dilemma is a conflict in which a person have to choose
between two or more actions and have moral reasons for choosing each action. A whistleblower can be
anyone who has and can report insider knowledge of illegal activities that are happening in an
organization. Therefore we can also say that whistleblowers can be supplier, client, contractor or an
employee who somehow becomes aware of illegal activities that are happening in a business either
through being told about it or witnessing the behavior. The alleged information of wrongdoing can be
grouped in many ways, law, regulation, violation of company policy/rules, fraud, corruption as well as
threat to public interest/national security (Vandekerckhove, 2006).
2.0 Types of Whistleblowers in School and in the Work Place
2.1 Internal Whistleblower
In most cases whistleblowers are internal whistleblowers, which report on misconduct that happen
within the company done by fellow employee or superior. Interesting questions with respect to internal
whistleblowers is, under what circumstances a person will act on to spot and to stop illegal,
unacceptable behavior and report it. If there are complaint systems within the organization that offer
not just option to dedicated through plan and control organization but option for absolute
confidentiality then people will find a reason to take action with respect to unacceptable behavior
within an organization (Rowe and Hall,

Coleman Social Capital
Social Capital: The Effects on Society Social Capital is defined as the networks of relationships
among people, enabling that society to function effectively. James Coleman s Social Capital in the
Creation of Human Capital examines the many benefits of social capital in a society. However, most
forms of social capital are public goods and do not primarily profit the person who has to bring it
about. Therefore, it s not in his interest to bring it leading to a shortage. Coleman wants to apply
economics s principle of rational action to the social perspective to increase people s willingness to
socialize. On the other hand, Alejandro Portes s The Two Meanings of Social Capital challenges
Coleman s concept by arguing that people shouldn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a family, it is the relations between children and parents as well as siblings. A child s success
depends on both the physical presence of adults and attention given to the child by adults. The High
School and Beyond sample shows that students who have two parents, one sibling, and a mother who
expects college education have the lowest percentage of dropping out of school at 8.1%. On the other
hand, students who have one parent, four siblings, and no college expectation have a whopping 30.6%
of dropping out. This is caused by the absence of the single parent as he or she is most likely working.
In addition, having more siblings means that the parent s attention is split and each child receive less
consideration. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the second category has a higher dropout rate
because they have less social capital. Alejandro Portes discuss the controversy surrounding the actual
meaning and effects of social capital. Confusion arises due its applications to manifold topics as well
as its uses on different group of people. He provided the concept by Pierre Bourdieu and James
Coleman which centered on the benefits of social capital on an individual or a small group. He argued
that Coleman focused on the advantages yielded to individual and then expand them to the whole
community with subtlety. This transition is not well defined and thus put social capital at risk of
becoming synonymous with all positive things in

The Crime Of Computer Forensics
Computer Forensics
In a world where technology is increasingly becoming the way of life, it was only a matter of time
before crime was no longer just in the streets but happening online as well. Criminals now get a new
approach to carry out their crimes with the use of computers. Since technology is more like a murder
mystery than catching the bad guy in the act, a new discipline of forensics needed to be put into place.
This is known as computer forensics. Forensic science is any science used for the purpose of law. In
the case of computer forensics it is the discipline that combines elements of law and computer science
to collect and analyze data from computer systems, networks, wireless communications, and storage
devices in a way that is admissible as evidence in a court of law (U.S. Cert, 2008). Meaning if you do
something illegal on the Internet it can be found. Since the widespread use of computers, computer
crime has caused an increase in computer investigations during the twenty first century. Some reasons
for investigation include: identity theft, such as stolen social security and credit card numbers, to find
evidence of a cheating spouse, to investigate hackers on a computer system, to find evidence of child
pornography, and much more.
History of Computer Forensics
The 1970s were when military investigators first started finding instances of computer related criminal
activity and needed a more comprehensive approach for solving these technical crimes.

Leak About Thomas Perez Essay
Leak About Thomas Perez
Leaks of government affairs have always been common in Washington DC. When a person first hears
the word leak, they most likely think of a story that was not meant to be published or shown to the
public, but this is not always the case. Some politicians or government officials will leak information
just to see a reaction from the general public. This tactic is called a trial balloon. This tactic is seen in
an article that was posted in The New York Times in 2014 about the possible nomination of Labor
Secretary, Thomas Perez, for Attorney General.
The New York Times article by Thomas Hulse Labor Secretary emerges as a Top Candidate for

A trial balloon allows the White House to test the response to a potential nominee and unleash a round
of public vetting before the president puts his prestige on the line . This shows that a trial balloon is
just a common tool for politicians in government to utilize. The president wanted to put out his
potential nomination in order to see the response he would get.
The author of the article then goes on to talk about the response from both sides of the political
parties. The author states that the nomination of Perez would be strongly supported from minority
groups while Republicans would strongly disagree with this nomination. The author shows no
preference as to whether he agrees with the President but instead examines both sides and the different
responses he would most likely get. He states that the Republicans think that Perez is just going to
bring in more illegal immigrants to take American jobs and that democrats believe his modest
upbringing and the fact that he worked his way through college would make him a good candidate.
President Obama can use all of this information when deciding on who he will eventually nominate

  • 2. You Just Dont Understand By Deborah Tannen Every day, at home or at workplaces, people engage in conversations involving the opposite gender. How does gender play a critical role in a conversation? Reasonings behind the existence of genderlect are quite complex. Bill Cosby once said Men and women belong to different species and communication between them is a science still in it infancy (Eisenberg). Men and women are born with the same brains. However, the way they function differently when having conversations. When men and women communicate, men mostly use the left side of their brains while women are capable of using both sides explaining the excellent in their multi tasking skills. Surprisingly, biological differences are not responsible for the genderlect, but the social norms and cultural backgrounds. These factors further differentiate conversations between men and women. Deborah Tannen, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University has written extensively on genderlect in her national best selling book, You Just Don t Understand: Women and Men in Conversation. In her book (Tannen, 1990), she explores in depth about different conversational styles of men and women with relatable examples. She also suggests some steps that could be taken to relieve people s frustrations towards each other s differences. Tannen s focus is mainly on the sociolinguistic side of linguistics and the verbal communication. According to the book (1990), genderlect can be caused by the difference in the environments people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Making My Fashion Dreams Become A Reality Growing up surrounded by historical landmarks, creative arts, and Southern charm, I have always been an admirer of fashion and beauty. When I was a young child of five years, I would continually play dress up and dream of becoming a Fashionista that assists movie stars and social elite for their red carpet appearances. I wanted to contribute to others in seeing the beauty in themselves and the world around them. After about eighteen years, nothing has really changed within my mind set. Today, I still dream of working in the fashion industry, but more importantly, making a difference in the world. In the process of making my fashion dreams become a reality, at seventeen, I secured enrollment at Northeast Mississippi Community College majoring in fashion merchandising. My first two years at junior college were wonderful, and I thoroughly enjoyed participating in the arts, being the Captain of the Tiger Dancers and Pom Squad, playing as a member of the tennis team, and supporting Prentiss county as Miss Hospitality 2013. These years taught me time management like no other while also leading me down the path of self expression and competitiveness. Finding immense knowledge and encouragement from professors in little classrooms and civilians in a small Mississippi town perfected my willingness to strive to do my utmost best in every circumstance, whether it be reaching my goals or helping others. Attending Northeast Mississippi Community College opened for me a world of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Era Of The 1920s The 1920s was a pivotal era in women s fashion an era that saw Prohibition, Jazz and celebration of war s end. Gone was the hourglass figure of the 19th Century, swept away by the World War I, and replaced by the figure of a modern, independent woman. This book covers fashions from 1920 to 1924, an often overlooked period of fashion which was a time of transition between the draped and layered fashions of the post World War I era and the free and easy gowns of the jazz age flapper. Before the Roaring Twenties, women were still wearing floor length dresses with corsets, and crinolines, arms and legs were covered, hair was long. This Gibson girl look was set the standard for beauty, fashion and manner. And the Victorian attitudes toward dress and etiquette created a strict moral climate. Until 1920s things changed quickly, the women was given the right to vote, they began to attend college. The Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1923. The World War I was over and men wanted their jobs back. Women, though, who had taken up men s jobs while they were at war, had proved themselves worthy of men s jobs, so many organizations and feminist reformers took up the task to encourage gender equality. Many important things happened in the 1920 s like prohibition and jazz music. Something that is also very significant is that this was the decade where fashion began entering a modern era. After decades of Victorian style, clothing such as corsets and petticoat, fashion was finally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Mise En Scene Monologue The exposition of the plot begins with a long shot of a relatively big private boat operated by a large crew of servants. In the following shot the viewer is introduced to Mr. Andrews who is just being informed about his daughter being on hunger strike. In the following shot we see Alexander Andrews trying to comfort his daughter. Through their dialog the viewer learns about the fact that Ellie has recently officially married and is being retained on the boat against her will because her father opposes the marriage. We also learn that Ellie feels like she has always been denied her will by her father and that her father supposes she only wants to marry King to anger him. The Mise en Scène of the first scenes establishes the Andrew s social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without Peter saving Ellie all the time, her journey to New York would have ended very quickly. At first Peter had to protect Ellie from herself and others and when he is gone, a different male has to take the position of the male guidance in Ellie s life to protect her; this role is taken by her father. Even though she knew she would be unhappy with King, her father had to interfere with the wedding to `save` her from marrying the wrong man. It Happened One Night [...] a film that restores patriarchal authority by redeeming Mr. Andrews and aligning him with Peter; both of them together know what s best for the errant daughter (Maltby 1998: 155) (Mizejewski 70). The women we meet during the course of the story is the opposite of how she is presented in the exposition. Ellie Andrews, who at first seemed to be a loud, rebellious, strong, and independent woman, representing the concept of the New Women , has turned out be extremely dependent on male guidance and protection. She seems incapable of taking care of herself and therefore represents the failure of the New Woman. Therefore, Capra s hidden indication of the failure of the New Women match the theory of feminist scholars working in the field of pop and visual culture that productions reflect social ideologies and promote patriarchal systems. • 7. The Highest Amount Of Gun Control Laws Daniel Danzo Research Paper America has the highest amount of gun related deaths each year in the world. In Germany 381, in France 255, in Canada 165 in the United Kingdom 68, in Australia 65, in Japan 39 and in the United States, 11,127 (Moore Michael, 51:15 51:48). Since the United States has the highest number of deaths, it is important to have gun control laws that restrict people from owning dangerous firearms like machine guns. Gun control laws should support both sides of the debate. Of course, both sides will not be completely happy with the laws created, but America should have a balance. In 2008, a poll was taken stating: Adult poll respondents views on the meaning of the Second Amendment; An individual s right to bear arms: Republican 51% and Democrats 41% (The History of the Right to Bear Arms). Today, the United States is more divided on gun control than it has ever been. The Second Amendment states: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (Milestones in Federal Gun Control Legislation). Unless the Second Amendment is changed, we cannot take the right from others to own guns. However, the government should regulate the types of gun Americans can own and who can own a gun because times have changed and American s mental health system is broken. Decades ago, the United States was once a country where a gun was considered to survive and protect. As ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. How Did Machiavelli s Political Views Influence American... In The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, Machiavelli writes about 16th century principalities and how its princes should act. However, while these ideals may seem dated, Machiavelli s description holds many similarities and differences to American politics today. Machiavelli s views on republics serve as the first difference between his political views and the American government. Machiavelli generally puts those in a republic in a negative light by claiming that the subjects of a republic are not used to standing up for themselves and cannot agree to give themselves a leader. Therefore, it is not a sturdy government to capture. Instead of finding the idea of no singular person being a leader a good way to ensure statewide cooperation and content, Machiavelli claims that, In republics there is more vitality, greater hatred, and more desire for vengeance, (Machiavelli, Chapter V). Which is a far cry to the American government s oath to all of its freedoms and liberties. Machiavelli moves on to say that the safest way to capture a republic state is to destroy it altogether. This shows his views on republics are very much negative and that he believes they are almost a nuisance to a prince trying to maintain a state. Of course this is a drastic difference to the American government, where its subjects thrive in a republic. In other words, while Machiavelli believes no state could be maintained as a republic, the American government proves that it could still be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The US was unprepared because they did not believe that the Japanese were on the verge of attacking the United States but plans were made to attack against the United States as early as January 1941. Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. All the planes on the Japanese ships were fully fueled and armed. • 11. Pride In The Necklace What exactly is pride? Pride is a great love of your accomplishments or the accomplishments of somebody whose accomplishments you can claim as your own, like a daughter. This is one of the relationships (mother daughter) that is altered, for the worse, by pride. Pride can be a wonderful tool used to bring about confidence and give somebody the courage to step outside the relative comfort zone they usually hold. However, that is not typically the case, for pride is usually found in excessive amounts. This excessive pride leads to horrible consequences if one is not careful about hiding it. For Meimei, Mathilde, and Doodle s brother, pride becomes a corrupting factor, damaging both their lives and their relationships. Rules of the Game ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Doodle s brother suffered from pride, and although he was customarily kind to his brother and taught him to walk, he did it for the wrong reasons. Furthermore, an expression of how terrible his brother feels because of his pride is shown in a passage that says: They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother (Hurst 389). This passage literally states that Doodle s brother was pride s slave, and it was only because of this slavery that he had taught Doodle how to walk. Nevertheless, this is not where his pride reaches its climax, and it is this extreme climax of pride that definitely does the uttermost damage to their relationship. After receiving immense praise from his family, Doodle s brother decides to push Doodle harder and harder, hoping that by doing this Doodle will earn his the praise his pride demands. Two things much happen before assessing for transfer and application: 1. • 13. Benefits of Attending Boarding School for the Arts Some might ask why anyone would even begin to want to leave home for something like high school. Why would you leave your home, your friends, your family? It is indeed a good question, one which I will answer in this essay. The most important reason I want to go to boarding school is for the arts. Don t get me wrong; I love my school. It is an arts magnet school, of course, and does have a partial emphasis on them, but I want to go somewhere where the whole school is focused on what I love to do most: perform. This gives you even more time to learn, also less free time, but it keeps you busy you re always engaged, always learning, and never bored. Most boarding school classes operate very differently from those at public school. At public school, your teachers get tired of you trying to engage them with multiple questions they re there to teach, gosh dang it, not listen to students and their stupid ramblings. At boarding school, the class structure is much less like a lecture hall and much more like a conference meeting: everyone offers input and it s nearly impossible for you to remain silent and unengaged. This means that you won t end up like the guy in front of me in geometry who simply sits and scrolls Facebook because no one has enough time to just sit and discuss his issues and grades with him. Boarding school also contains incredible resources. A weight room, swimming pool, fully stocked library, and amazing theatre facilities are some of the ones at Walnut Hill. • 14. Abelard and Aquinas Essay Peter Abelard was a renowned dialectician from 1079 to 1142. He subjected theological doctrines to logical analysis. In other words, he used rational argument to discover truth. Saint Thomas Aquinas, was a believer in the power of reason, giving St. Augustine s theory an alternate approach. He taught in Paris and Italy during the years 1225 to 1274. Both of these new age thinkers changed the way Catholic followers viewed the natural world. Historically, he is seen as an alternate approach to St. Augustine s view of the city of man versus the city of God. Augustine and Aquinas shared the belief that the original sin was Adam and Eve s venture through the garden of good and evil. On page 239, Aquinas held that both faith and reason came from God, they were not in opposition to each other; properly understood, they supported each other.. He did not want people to shun the idea of reason, he wanted the world to see that it was not evil. Combining Christianity with Aristotelian knowledge, he shed light upon the difficulty to distinguish common ground between the natural world and the supernatural world. The excerpt is divided into two different sections, Whether, Besides the Philosophical Sciences, Any Further Doctrine Is Required? and Whether God Exists?. In the second section he proves five ways God exists by using Aristotle s technique in philosophy, they are motion, nature of efficient cause, possibility and necessity, the graduation to be found in things, and the governance of the world. • 15. Repentance Of Sinners In The Parable Of The Lost Sheep How is Luke s claim on repentance of sinners in the Parable of the Lost Sheep being illustrated by the differences in detail found, in comparison to the Gospels of Matthew and Thomas? The Parable of the Lost Sheep is one of the many parables Jesus gave during his lifetime. It is found in the two canonical gospels: Matthew 18:10 14 and Luke 15:3 10. It is also found in the non canonical gospel of Thomas 107. It is about a shepherd who leaves his flock of ninety nine sheep behind to go look for the one sheep that is lost. This context is similar in all of the three Gospels. However, although there are similarities, there are also differences. These differences have an implication for the message grasped by the readers. The focus will be on the repentance of sinners claimed in the Gospel of Luke and how it differs from the messages found in the other two Gospels. I will do this by analyzing the effect of the differences in language, symbolic representation, location of the parable, audience, and the context in which it is written, found in these three Gospels. In terms of symbolic presentation, Luke uses the word sinners to compare them to the sheep as seen in verse 7, ...one sinner who repents... Jesus is giving a reason why he is friends of tax collectors and sinners. This is because they are like the sheep, lost and need saving through repentance. • 20. Factors Affecting The Biodiversity Of The Lake Many lakes across the globe are home to a wide variety of organisms, which are supported by both the lakes themselves and by the abundance of varying habitats surrounding them. Lake Naivasha (0°45 N, 36°20 E) is one such lake: Situated within the rift valley, Lake Naivasha is a freshwater home to an abundance of both native and alien flora and fauna, both aquatic and terrestrial (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007). The lake has 3 main surface inflows; from the Malewa, Gilgil and Karati rivers, but is an endorheic lake (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007); so is a closed hydrological system on the surface (Figure 1). Nevertheless, it is thought that water from the lake does move southward underground, through volcanic rocks (Clarke et al., 1990, Ojiambo et al., 2001). There are various factors that contribute to the biodiversity of the lake; however one the most predominant factors is the impact that the steep increase in Naivasha s population has had on the lake. 70% of Kenya s horticultural output is produced in the Lake Naivasha area (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007), which makes it an area of extreme national economic importance. Due to this thriving industry, the lake s population has risen from an estimated 7,000 in the 1969, to approximately 300,000 in 2007 (Ouma Oloo, 2007). This rapid population growth has had effects on many components of the ecosystem, including changes in lake levels and water composition, loss of habitats, introduction of alien species and decline in many species ... The author uses these literary devices because she wants to illustrate Roselily s reasons for marrying the man. Roselily does this because it is what s best for her and her children. In a way, Roselily is being forced because she does not have a better alternative to her current life. By marrying the man, Roselily will have a renewed lifestyle and reputation. Roselily imagines the flowers in her hand as kids. When she does this, her head fills with murderous thoughts. A squeeze around the flowers in her hands chokes off three and four and five years of breath (Walker 4). As guilty as Roselily feels, this shows how Roselily wishes she never had given birth to any of her kids. When she tightens her grip on the bouquet of flowers, she thinks of her children. Roselily dreams she did not give birth to these kids. Roselily s ideas of murder could possibly be associated with her obsession with the idea of her personal spirit being robbed from her. Weddings usually give off positive connotations, however in Roselily s mind she disturbs the happy wedding with dark thoughts such as the idea of murder. Deviating from the topic of personal spirit , Brent studies the ferocious thoughts swarming Roselily s mind. • 26. The Economic And Social Changes During The 1960s Under The... Life in America began to undergo great economic and social changes during the 1980s under the Reagan Administration. During this period of time, stagflation began to distress the US economy, leaving millions of Americans to fall victim to homelessness and poverty. The unemployment rate had reached its highest peak since the Great Depression, creating a major crisis for low income families and other individuals concerning living conditions. The introduction of Reaganism into society primarily focused on reducing the growth of government spending through the modulation of federal income tax and reduction of government regulation to diminish inflation. Despite all attempts for economic recovery, the US struggled to bounce back from the 1970s recession and in time led to the significant rise in urban poverty. Uniquely, an American film director from the 1980s by the name of John Carpenter produced a science fiction film, They Live, that served as a powerful and eye opening depiction of his own personal views of Reaganism (Reaganomics). He essentially depicts our world to be controlled by powerful elites who have created a repressive society that we are unwilling brought to live and build in. He also clarifies how the majority of Americans during the 1980s were focused primarily on materialism and how an individual s success was measured by the amount of money they possessed. Today tunnels provide available space for cars and trains, water and sewage, even power and communication lines. However, before cars and trains, tunnels carried only water. The first to use tunnels on a major scale were the Romans. Roman engineers created the most extensive network of tunnels in the ancient world. The Romans built aqueducts to carry water from mountain springs to cities and villages; however, in many instances there were obstacles, such as rock formations, in between the spring and the city of interest. However, there were drawbacks to a bridge crossing. A Hudson River bridge would require a minimum clearance of 200 feet for ships to travel to and from the Hudson River ports. Since the Manhattan side of the Hudson did not meet the 200 foot elevation requirement for a bridge, long approaches would have to be built on the New York side. Because the land that was required for these long approaches would require the purchase of very costly Manhattan real estate the bridge idea was rejected in favor of a tunnel. There are three basic steps to building a stable tunnel. The first step is excavation: engineers dig through the earth with a reliable tool or technique. The second step is support: engineers must support any unstable ground around them while they dig. The final step is lining: engineers add the final touches, like the roadway and lights, when the tunnel is structurally sound. Three main proposals were submitted for the Hudson river tunnel; The first proposal was a bi level tunnel measuring 31 feet in diameter. The upper level, which was to carry slower vehicles, was to have an 18½ foot wide roadway and a clearance of 12 feet, flanked by sidewalks measuring 4½ feet wide. The lower level, which was to be reserved for express vehicles, was to have a 16 foot wide roadway and a nine foot clearance. The second proposal which was presented by engineer George Goethals, who would eventually become chief engineer of the Port Authority, and have the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Of Thomas Manns Tonio KroegerAnd Albert Camus s The Stranger Thomas Mann s Tonio Kroeger and Albert Camus s The Stranger Introduction The literary characters of Meursault and Tonio Kroeger are likely depicted as outsiders in the novels The Stranger by Albert Camus and Tonio Kroeger by Thomas Mann. The novels can both be described as existentialist investigations. In the school of philosophy, existentialism seeks to investigate the relationship between individuals and the society, the meaning of life, and the unavoidable conflicts in interpersonal relationships among other inquisitions (Sleasman, 2014). Existentialism is evident in the two novels under review as the characters are treated as outsiders. Albert Camus The Stranger The concept of the outsider is demonstrated by the two lead characters namely Meursault and Tonio Kroeger. In The Stranger, Meursault is depicted as an outsider both in himself as well as the society as owing to his criminal tendencies as he battles to show emotions and link with realities regarding his life (Sleasman, 2014). Meursault is depicted as much disconnected to the current world and life either emotionally or socially. For instance, the opening scene shows how Meursault reacts to his mother s death. His lack of remorse and loss is both salient and borders on the pathological. By falling asleep during his mother s funeral; the action demonstrates the lack of feelings and social competence which children are usually expected to show to their parents (Camus, 2012). Whistleblower Ethical Dilemmas 1.0 Introduction According to (Williams, 2015), a moral dilemma is a conflict in which a person have to choose between two or more actions and have moral reasons for choosing each action. Therefore we can also say that whistleblowers can be supplier, client, contractor or an employee who somehow becomes aware of illegal activities that are happening in a business either through being told about it or witnessing the behavior. The alleged information of wrongdoing can be grouped in many ways, law, regulation, violation of company policy/rules, fraud, corruption as well as threat to public interest/national security (Vandekerckhove, 2006). 2.0 Types of Whistleblowers in School and in the Work Place 2.1 Internal Whistleblower In most cases whistleblowers are internal whistleblowers, which report on misconduct that happen within the company done by fellow employee or superior. Interesting questions with respect to internal whistleblowers is, under what circumstances a person will act on to spot and to stop illegal, unacceptable behavior and report it. The High School and Beyond sample shows that students who have two parents, one sibling, and a mother who expects college education have the lowest percentage of dropping out of school at 8.1%. On the other hand, students who have one parent, four siblings, and no college expectation have a whopping 30.6% of dropping out. This is caused by the absence of the single parent as he or she is most likely working. In addition, having more siblings means that the parent s attention is split and each child receive less consideration. The Crime Of Computer Forensics Computer Forensics In a world where technology is increasingly becoming the way of life, it was only a matter of time before crime was no longer just in the streets but happening online as well. Criminals now get a new approach to carry out their crimes with the use of computers. Since technology is more like a murder mystery than catching the bad guy in the act, a new discipline of forensics needed to be put into place. This is known as computer forensics. Forensic science is any science used for the purpose of law. In the case of computer forensics it is the discipline that combines elements of law and computer science to collect and analyze data from computer systems, networks, wireless communications, and storage devices in a way that is admissible as evidence in a court of law (U.S. Cert, 2008). Meaning if you do something illegal on the Internet it can be found. Since the widespread use of computers, computer crime has caused an increase in computer investigations during the twenty first century. Some reasons for investigation include: identity theft, such as stolen social security and credit card numbers, to find evidence of a cheating spouse, to investigate hackers on a computer system, to find evidence of child pornography, and much more.
