Career And Interest Self-Assessment Results
Self Assessment I.Career and Interest Self assessment Results This self assessment test was
something that narrowed down possible interest and helped the participants open their mind to
new careers. In fact when I finished my test I was able to view the different careers that feel in
my interest category. Taking a survey and calculating the different likes each field had
accumulated determined my test outcome. After gathering the likes that had accumulated I was
able to determine which inventory category was strongest. My top inventory was conventional
which states, I am one who likes to follow set rules and procedures, and prefers detail and clear
lines of authority (Self Assessment, n.d.). My second strongest inventory category was Social,
which states, I like work activities that promote learning and development (Self Assessment,
n.d.). Not only did I learn what my strongest inventory was I also had the ability to learn which
jobs fell under those categories. Out of each category within the level 5 education requirement, I
had one job that stood out over the others; category one conventional had Math Professor. This
job is something that would be interesting, but I am not sure if I would want this job as a career.
The social category had one job that also caught my eye, health educator. After all the research and
looking at each one of the categories and the possible job opportunities I have come to the
realization that the test are estimates. I personally do not think

Gulf War Syndrome Essay
Gulf War Syndrome
The Gulf War Syndrome was identified after the Gulf War in 1991. Thousands of troops from the
US, British, and Canadian developed symptoms after the war. This Syndrome has been researched
since the end of the Gulf War and still not all the answers have been found. Not only have
thousands of troops suffered from this syndrome, but also their families have developed some
symptoms related to this syndrome. It is important to inform our nation of this new disease because
there is still no cure, and GWS can be our next conflict relating to AIDS and Cancer. This research
is dedicated to people who are uneducated about Gulf War Syndrome. After reading many articles

Gulf War Syndrome has over 20 symptoms that have been reported by the veterans of the Gulf War.
According to Stephen Straus in the journal The Lancet, over 50,000 troops returned as changed
men. Reports showed of vascular instability, hyperventilation, bacilliuria, and other physiological
and laboratory anomalies in the Gulf War veterans. When the problem began to exist, the US alone
funded $ 115,000,000 for targeted research on the unknown syndrome. Four thousand gulf war
veterans and men who also served in Bosnia were mailed questionnaires about deployment,
exposures, symptoms, and illnesses. The main finding was that the Gulf War

Positive Effects Of Externality
A teenager just turned sixteen and has their driving permit, on their birthday they decide to take
the driving test. They end up passing the test allowing them to get their driver s license. The
parents are really proud of their kid and take them to the car dealership to look at a car.The kid
ends up finding a car and the parents buy the car for a birthday present. The addition of another
driver and car onto the road ultimately creates more traffic on the street. The addition of a new car
and driver could be viewed as an externality, but what exactly is an externality?
Economist Arthur Pigou stated that an externality is the , costs imposed or benefits conferred on
others that are not taken into account by the person taking the action (Pigou AP, 1920). The
Merriam Webster dictionary defines an externality as a secondary or unintended effect(Merriam
Webster, 1978). In other words an externality in economics happens whenever two parties are
engaging in business and a bystander is affected by the action that they had no part of being in.
These actions can either be beneficial or harmful to a third party.
2. Positive Externalities
Externalities can usually have two different outcomes, those being a positive or negative outcome
to the third party bystander. An externality that is considered a positive outcome is one that will
benefit a company or group that is not particularly involved in the activities of the two parties that
are working together. Say that someone produces

A Reader- Oriented Approach to Edgar Alan Poe s the Tell-...
If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? A Reader Oriented approach
to Edgar Alan Poe s The Tell Tale Heart The Titular question is an old philosophical riddle for
which a wide range of metaphysical and non metaphysical solution has been offered. The
answers differ based on the perspective of the interpreter. Judging these answers is neither
possible nor desirable for us, but the riddle and the ensuing debates attest to the veracity of one
of the most basic tenets of reader response theory: If a text does not have a reader, it does not
exist or at least, it has no meaning. It s reader, with whatever experience he brings to the text, who
gives it its meaning. Of particular significance is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator is a psychopath with wacky motivations. If we accept this convenient explanation
then we have to deal with another question: could a madman talks with such lucidity and
exactness? The answer that Ken Frieden gives to this question is a positive one. He downplays
the contrast between the sane narrative and mad narrator: The discrepancy between sane
narrator and madman perhaps shows the error of assuming that linguistic normalcy implies
psychological normalcy. Friedan took it for granted that the narrator is mad because he kills an
old man for no reason. He is doubly mad, Friedan said, when he imagines he hears the pounding
of the dead man s heart and gives away the crime he had concealed. Yet the narrator tells a
coherent tale, as if to demonstrate out of spite that he is sane, refuting the ordinary belief that he
must be mad. On the other side of the road, there are critics who are sympathetic toward the
narrator and dismiss any suggestion of madness. Daniel Hoffman, for instance is willing to
believe the narrator s claim about the Old man s eye. Hoffman reads the vulture like eye as a
Freudian Father Figure. He takes the old man as a father figure; whose Eye becomes the all seeing
surveillance of the child by the father. (Bloom 53) . This surveillance is, Hoffman writes, the
inculcation into his soul

The Importance Of Flashbulb Memories
How can a human forget to turn the lights off when they leave the house, but remember exactly
where they were when JFK was assassinated? The answer to this phenomenon has long been
researched and the answer is a term referred to as flashbulb memories, which can be defined as a
detailed and vivid memory that is stored on one occasion and retained for a lifetime (Schachter,
Gilbert, Wegner, Nock, 2015). These memories can be composed of insignificant but vivid details
about the situation in which the news was received (Demiray Freund, 2015). Flash bulb memories
are believed to encompass various memories including positive and negative events that have
affected entire nations or just one individual, and have correlation with age, proximity, and
importance.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, just as not all memories are positive not all flashbulb memories are positive. A
negative flash bulb memory may be an American remembering exactly where they were when JFK
was assassinated, while a positive memory for the same individual may be remembering exactly
where they were when they learned of Osama Bin Laden s assassination. The idea that one type of
flashbulb memory is more likely to be created than the other has long been debated. A recent study
by Demirav and Freund shows that neither of these memories appears to be more prevalent than
the other. There participants of various ages and ethnicities were asked two recall the death of both
Michael Jackson (negative flashbulb memory) and Osama Bin Laden (positive flashbulb memory),
while both memories had different effects emotionally on the participants the recollection of a flash
bulb memory was the same (Demirav and

Hillary Clinton Candidate Analysis
The Candidate that speaks more effectively
In the Presidential debates, Hillary Clinton speaks more effectively. She does this by remaining
professional in answering the questions that were asked. When the debates get heated, Clinton is
the candidate with the right temperament. She also presents herself as being more prepared and
knowledgeable. Something else Hillary does well is sticking to the topics and facts that are being
discussed and being crystal clear in delivering her information.
When the Candidates of the Presidential Debates become acrimonious, Hillary Clinton is the

What Hillary does well is valuing all facts when acting in response to questions. With this in mind,
Hillary is presenting herself as transparent. She is crystal clear in her explanations. We know that
she is using fact, because everything she says can be supported in some way. When listening to the
debates, Hillary mentions several times that she has a fact checker on her website,
Hillaryclinton.com. However, Trump struggled with truthfulness throughout the debate. A recent
article about the first debate says, The Washington Post rated about 65 percent of his statements to
be Four Pinocchio s (their worst rating for lies), and PolitiFact has scored only 16% of his
statements as true or mostly true. This severs his credibility and brings his judgement into question.
Trump also had trouble answering specific questions regarding his plans and had a hard time
keeping his temper under control when confronted about having inaccurate facts. To add on to this,
in the second debate he also weaved around tough questions about ungraceful remarks he had made
in 2005, constantly calling it just locker room talk. Yet, Clinton s efforts of being clear in
delivering her information proves that she doesn t want the audience to think she is keeping secrets
so she can be

Physical Therapy Reflection Paper
It was the summer of 2015, it was one the biggest transformation years in high school athletics
going from my freshman year to my sophomore year. There was a different plan for my summer
other than sports. I had my knee in a brace the whole summer while having crutches underneath
my armpits for most of the summer. This brace was large, it went from my ankle to my upper
thigh with 4 straps and metal rods on the side of my legs. I was putting all my trust into the brace
to keep my knee stable and not hurt it more. It was my first day of Physical TherapyI was at Summit
Orthopedics in Vadnais Heights, and I smelt the same things as I did the time I came the first
time to OrthoQuick. It was the smell of hand sanitizer and elder people. What I saw was the
elder people waiting for their name to be called to go back with their physical therapist. My
physical therapist name was Derek. He brought me back to a room that was no bigger than an
average observation room. We started physical therapy by engaging my quad and then releasing
it. The part that I was surprised by the most is the electrical stimulation. They put patch on each
side of my quad and connect wires to the patches, and it felt like my quad was vibrating and
tingling on a beat. The time I was there before my surgery was one of the hardest day to
comprehend in my life it was the day that we went over the MRI. It showed that there was fluid
behind the cartilage in my femur Dr. Sekenzel then told me that I was going to

Swedish Mail Order Brides
Sweden as a country is very rigid about its principles and ensures people follow them too, the
same holds true for Swedish Mail Order Brides as well. The whole idea of this system has been
existent from the early days and it has spread like a house on fire from the United States to the
European continents now. However the first bride hailed from England where the English women
went to another continent altogether to get married to men. Swedish Mail Order Brides work on
the same lines and the idea although originating from the English it has now become a very
important part of the European continent.
The primary reason for which Swedish Mail Order Brides became so popular in Europe is
because most men worked there as farmers in the primitive days with very few women around.
The best way to advertise about these brides was by publishing ads in newspapers declaring
interest in searching for a life partner. In fact at that time there were a lot of rumors about women
running away to get married to ranchers or farmers, which is why services like this became so
highly popular as these women did not want to take any risk when it came to finding their soul
mate. The other countries where brides are very common include Latin America, Russia, Africa,
Asia and Philippines. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

seem interested in then have to get in touch with the wedding brokerage firm. Criticisms and

concept promotes human slavery. Many women forcefully marry and then end up staying at the

Humanities And Science Lewis Thomas Analysis
Humanities and Science, by Lewis Thomas, spins around the concept of losing interest in future
prospective scientists as a result due to loss of interest of current generations. It begins with
Thomas informing you of Lord Kelvin and his feelings surrounding numbers and observation. He
wants you to understand that Kelvin s feelings were no observation of nature [is] worth paying
serious attention to unless it [can] be stated in precisely quantitative terms . His ideas unearthed
many skeptics because they couldn t understand how to quantify certain things. This is why
Thomas believes the scientific community is to blame for everyone s misunderstanding of them.

Questioning the present and the past is the way of learning for the future through searching the
known and unknown and rethinking the way science is taught. I agree with Thomas underlying
statement that the fun has been taken out of science. There are volumes of students slugging
through college and med school for a title and not for their love of science. An even more sad
realization are that kids are not even pursuing a scientific career because of the idea that
everything has already been figured out and there is nothing left to discover. This is the current
day problem, kids are turned off by the field of science. The only way to revive it is to ask
questions. If people don t start asking questions about what has been discovered, then there is
nowhere to go. There is the possibility that things scientists have figured out are wrong, but no one
will know if it isn t questioned or looked deeper

Summary Of The Causation Of Vietnam War
A Summary of the Causation of the Vietnam War
Traditionally war serves as an instrument for peace with a defined winner and loser. This was not
the case in the Vietnam War. As the longest war in U.S history, it spanned nearly 20 years
encompassing 5 different presidential terms. The war in Vietnam served as a limited proxy war
between the United States and Soviet Union fought to combat the spread of communism, to
preserve a democratic state in Southeast Asia, and to limit the power of the Soviet Union. Due to
the complexity of the Vietnam war itself one cannot categorize the war in terms of winning or
losing , rather one must look at the political, ideological, and historical causations of the war
In the aftermath of WWII most European countries fell under the influence of the communist
Soviet Union. At the time the Soviet Union was rapidly spreading it ideals of Marxist equality
throughout eastern Europe (History.com). Fearful that the grasp of communism would spread
rapidly outside of Europe, the United States shifted its attention to the Korean Peninsula where the
soviet backed North Korean government threated war against the South. Realizing that communism

Mistakes In Into Thin Air
Mistakes That Lead to Tragedies and Precautions That Lead to Success
The best way to bring attention to a problem is tragedy. Unfortunately, this means reform will not
happen until the loss or harm of life has already occurred. One example of this was seen in New
York, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. This fire was the cause of 146 deaths and many more
injuries; however, this lead to new law regulating work safety standards. While this is a tragedy
that caused reform in 1911, the same method of reform stands today. This can be seen in the novel,
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. The novel is an account of what happened on the mountain during
the 1996 Everest expedition. While the expedition started off with high hopes and dreamers ready ...

In order to continue climbing Everest, many aspects of climbing need to be improved before more
people endanger their lives to try and reach the roof of the world. The guides have some areas that
need the most reform. During the ascension of Everest the guides made a plethora mistakes that
seemed insignificant but only aided in disaster. The guides first mistake is allowing any bloody
idiot [with enough determination] up Everest (Krakauer 153). By allowing any bloody idiot with
no climbing experience to try and climb the most challenging mountain in the world, the guides are
almost inviting trouble. Having inexperienced climbers decreases the trust a climbing team has in
one another, causing an individual approach to climbing the mountain and more reliance on the
guides. While this approach appears fine, this fault is seen in addition to another in Scott Fischer s
expedition Mountain Madness. Due to the carefree manner in which the expedition was run, clients
[moved] up and down the mountain independently during the acclimation period, [Fischer] had to
make a number of hurried, unplanned excursions between Base Camp and the upper camps when
several clients experienced problems and needed to be escorted down, (154). Two problems present
in the Mountain Madness expedition were seen before the summit push: the allowance of
inexperienced climbers and an unplanned climbing regime. A third problem that aided disaster was
the difference in opinion in regards to the responsibilities of a guide on Everest. One guide went
down alone many hours ahead of the clients and went without supplemental oxygen (318). These
three major issues: allowing anyone up the mountain, not having a plan to climb Everest and
differences in opinion. All contributed to the disaster on Everest in

How Did The French Conquer Indochina
Not intending to conquer Indochina all at once, the French aimed to convert the Vietnamese to
Catholicism, establish a strategic presence in Southeast Asia, and secure products such as rice,
coffee, and rubber. The French progressively increased their control over Indochina (Vietnam,
Cambodia, and Laos) over a prolonged duration of time, more than 350 years. Welcomed into
Indochina for their specialized skills and their association to European suppliers of western
merchandise and weapons, the Europeans started taking advantage. The French East India
Company, a commercial enterprise, obtained sufficient traction in Indochina in 1688. Therefore a
system was formed which carried on for centuries. When French soldiers,... Show more content on

After French rule ended, the French language was still widely used among the new governments.
There was little organized resistance to the French, and what there was was scattered, because of
the northerners and southerners having a large rivalry. After World War 2 the Viet Minh managed
to unite the two groups when the Japanese had surrendered. The French had not yet reaffirmed
control. The post war French government was unstable. After the French tried to stop the Viet
Minh resistance in 1946, they broke away and war began. In fact, the French effort all along was
hindered by lack of resources and limited support in France, and they were now far from a
superpower. The Vietnamese ultimately won the war. To a degree, the French did bring some
commercial and economic activity to Vietnam in the form of rubber and agricultural production
and developed architecture in the cities like harbors, roads, schools and sewage removal. They
also developed a system for delivering fresh water. However, the French did not do this to benefit
the Vietnamese, rather, they did it to make money, educate the workforce and develop a successful

Michel Foucault s Conception Of Discourse
By definition discourse simply means communication, but it can encompass a whole different idea
which relates to why we say what we say or do what we do in society a cerain way. The discourse
theory was first presented by French philosopher Michel Foucault which states that discourse is
simply systems of thoughts composed of ideas, attitudes, courses of action, beliefs and practices
that systematically construct the subjects and the worlds of which they speak.
For instance, the idea of discourse can be seen with the whole idea of 9/11. Before September 11th,
2001 the numbers 9 and 11 had no apparent meaning, but after the whole incident simply saying the
numbers 9 and 11 have a whole significant meaning around the globe. The event ... Show more

The government, or more specific the Bush administration was able to invade foreign countries,
including invading Afghanistan as a way to root out and fight terrorism. The government
consistently expressed that terrorist are dangerous and therefore we must do anything in order to
protect our country which made up discourses in our society through the power of the institution of
government which influenced society. The government was able to justify the use of force on
foreign countries, as a way to protect our country s national security , and society has never
questioned the government s actions because who would if it is protecting our country. Thus, with
the acceptance of these ideas by society the government was able to justify their actions like
increasing airport security, and invading Afghanistan because they know how to protect our
country. The new discourses relating to terrorism allows the institutions like the government use
their power, in post 9/11 can use extreme measure to deal with them. A similar instance is the
discourses present in school relating to the role of teachers and students. In the classroom there is
already existing discourses that are ingrained in our

Sea Oak Analysis
In Sea Oak, George Saunders composes a story that examines social classes by applying satire.
He uses the narrator s Aunt Bernie to teach a valuable lesson about life. The valuable lesson is
that one should appreciate what they have in life my making the most out of it. It is essential for
people to acknowledge what they have, on the grounds that one day it might be gone. In Sea Oak,
Saunders represents two Aunt Bernie s, a before life Aunt Bernie and an after life Aunt Bernie.
With the before life Aunt Bernie, she lives with her nephew, her niece Min, her daughter Jade,
and their babies. Although she experiences poverty, mistreatment, and also lives in an unsafe
neighborhood, she appreciates what she has. She experiences poverty all of her life, and
experiences mistreatment when she takes care of the grandfather; he leaves her with nothing
when he dies. Grandpa needed her to keep the house after Grandma died. Then he died and left
all his money to a woman that none of us had ever heard of. (Saunders, 95). Aunt Bernie was
mistreated because she acts a caretaker and it backfired on her. Aunt Bernie handles the situation
of the grandfather not leaving her money by not reacting, she remained not bitter. In addition to,
Aunt Bernie is appreciative of what life hands her when Saunders describes what she had
received for Christmas one year. When I say I am tired of being broke, she says that Grandpa
once gave her pencils for Christmas. She was so thrilled [that] she sat around sketching horses all
day on the back of used envelopes (Saunders, 95). As Saunders continues to build on the story of
Aunt Bernie s before life, readers want to know, can Aunt Bernie discover a plan in time enough to
remove her family from poverty and living at risk, or will it be too late?
In Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, Alison Bechdel composes a graphic memoir to inform
readers about her journey of coming out as a lesbian to her parents. To add to this note, Bechdel

Social Equality Essay
Social Equality Synthesis of American History and Today
The development of America as a nation was largely influenced by several key points in its history
that gave rise to a country that is continuously struggling with social equality. First, the
consolidation of the United States Constitution, in 1786, failed to legalize slavery, which
contentiously allowed slavery to continue, dehumanizing blacks to lower positions in America s
social hierarchy. Next, the changing dynamics of social roles redefined the traditional male and
female societal responsibilities and obligations that generated a divide of gender issues. The issue
prompted a surge of feminist activists that sought for gender equality that is still being debated
today. Finally, in a current and contemporary example, President Trump s aggressive stance on
immigration has forced many immigrants to be fearful of their current status in the country. This
issues has been severely centered around race, which has been the core issue and debate with
President Trump, Democrats, and the nation. From the 17th century to the 21st century, the United
States debated and still debates social equality and what it means to be citizen and a member of
society that was reflective through the degradation of slaves and blacks, women rights and their
elevated roles in society, racial injustice of African Americans, and the immigration system of
contemporary America. The founding of America was driven on economic prosperity and

Amy Chua suggests that it is important for the children to acknowledge their parents and respects

they sit down and laugh together. Amy Chua considers herself a typical Chinese motherwho aspires
that someday her children will grow and take care of her and her husband.

both positive and negative. Not only have these advancements helped make our lives easier, it
has also helped us lived longer. For example, the use of the computer has evolved in health care.
Medical Professionals use the computer for their daily operations. As a result of the use of the

EMR and EHR also helps keep information up to date. A study was done by to evaluate the
staffed nurses attitude and perception of the EHR in Sri Ramakrishna Hospital. The study
found that majority of the staffed nurses (95.5%) found the EHR as beneficial (Juliet Sudha,
2013). About 68% of the nurses believed that EHR would be helpful and the about 73% of them
believed EHR will reduce the workload (Juliet Sudha, 2013). Cons Nurses have found the EMR
and EHR beneficial. Many of them have positives views of them. However, not all nurses have
reciprocal feelings towards having patients medical records electronically distributed. According to
Nelson (2016), challenges to EHR usability include workflow issues, forced word choices, lack of
or limited free text, and difficulty finding data or information, among others. Nurses have stated
that inputting information to the EMR and EHR takes too much time and it is also time
consuming. The most common problem with EMR and EHR are system failures. Computers crash
every time and power outages are really common. If the system ends up failing, then there might be
no back up charts. One major problem would be the change to EMR and EHR. New nurses might
find the change is not difficult. However, for older nurses that are used to charting might find the

The Theory And Post Modernism Theory
CASE STUDY
Theories in social work play an important role in solving problems among families from different
background. Problems can be evolving from an individual ,or families or may constitute their
concerned societies or communities. In my report I have selected three theories each from the
recommended ones Individual theory, Structural theory and Post Modernism theory., that is
cognitive behavioural therapy, empowerment and narrative therapy respectively. As theory helps
us understand and contest ideas ,also offers a practice framework , I would like to impart these
theories on practice.(payne 2005) I have got a case to apply these principles of each theories. a
client named Bob Cruise had approached me with his family problems..On his first arrival itself
he seemed to be tensed..gradually he shared his problems with me in hope that i could cure him.
Bob is from a low socio economic suburb lived in a rental property ,his wife is disabled one and has
getting disability pension, he has no permanent job to serve his family ,also he has three kids(two
adolescent boys and one little girl). He has worry upon the children s malbehaviourism too..His
both adolescent children are disrespectful, to them and giving abusive words. Hence he is anxious
about his future and told me his money will be taken from them if they get well..In my perspective
, I like to solve this problem by using psychodynamic theory that is cognitive behavioural therapy..I

HIPAA Compliance Essay
HIPAA Compliance
If you are in the healthcare industry, you have probably heard some rumblings about the Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, coolly referred to as HIPAA. The word is
your medical practice will have to be HIPAA compliant by April 2003, but you re not exactly sure
what this act mandates or how to accomplish it. In very basic terms, HIPAA has two primary
components to which hospitals, health plans, healthcare clearinghouses, and healthcare providers
must conform: 1) Administrative simplification, which calls for use of the same computer language
industry wide; 2) Privacy protection, which requires healthcare providers to take reasonable
measures to protect patients written, oral, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
HIPAA doesn?t necessarily prescribe the solutions, but it does require physicians to look at all of
the ways that they use and access data today and determine whether that?s reasonable or not. to
help you begin your HIPAA complianceprocess, following are some practical ideas for rethinking
how you maintain and use patient information in your office. Appoint one or two staff members
(depending on the size of your office) to review the HIPAA act, determine the changes your
practice needs to make, and decide if you?ll need outside help. To keep this project manageable,
do not wait until the last minute. Remember: most of the healthcare industry will have to be
HIPAA compliant by April 14, 2003. Furthermore, compliance is not optional. Those found in
violation of the act will be penalized: Civil penalties range up to $25,000 per violation of each
standard. Criminal penalties range up to $250,000 in fines and/or up to 10 years in prison. 3
An important part of HIPAA is the minimum use standard, which mandates that healthcare
providers use and disclose patient information in ways that are minimally necessary to
accomplish the task. For example, a billing clerk does not need access to a patient?s entire
medical history to bill for a service rendered, says Hole Curry. Therefore, you may want to divide
patient files into sections, having an office policy that clearly states who may access each section.

Essay About Moving To Canada
Before moving to Canada, I really only knew about the University of Toronto. When I told
people that I was interested in computer science, the first thing they would say was, Have you
heard about the University of Waterloo? My teachers and peers have praised Waterloo as having
one of the best computer science programs in Ontario. This was initially why I looked further into
this university. I knew that Waterloo was the place for me after I watched a video about the
university. The part that really stuck with me was the university s slogan, Ideas start hereВ® .
There are a few reasons for this.
First of all, over the past few years, I discovered that I love designing and creating my own
projects and bringing them to life. For example, I enjoy fashion as a hobby, and I had designed
several dresses in my freetime, getting inspiration from professionals in the field. The feeling I got
after I held the finished version of the dress in my hands could only be described as magic. Nothing

Levi Strauss
Levi Strauss at Home and Abroad As one attempts to assess the business ethics of Levi Strauss
and Nike in this writing assignment, we are again compelled to revisit the critical distinction of
conduct that is legal, yet still unethical. In both instances, Levi Strauss and Nike behaved with
the parameters of legal conduct, yet few would argue that profiting from exploitive work
conditions is an ethical behavior of any socially responsible organization (broad view social
responsibility). Obviously, it s very tempting to just condense this argument to the point of bad
companies boosting profits from lower labor costs via exploiting foreign workers in sweatshops . I
am going to take a much broader approach here in my assessment, as... Show more content on

The end result of this ruling is that corporations that profit greatly from outsourced labor are now
able to pay for the elections of our Congressmen and gee, wonder how this economic favor will
be repaid when attempts to rein in outsourcing come up in Congress? Let s move on to our two
protagonists in this debate: Levi Strauss and Nike. Now that we ve got the backdrop well in
hand, and a reasonable person would agree that a massive systemic failure in the U.S. has
allowed and promoted unchecked outsourcing of jobs, it s time to discuss these two corporate
giants and their respective behaviors here. Do these two corporations have a responsibility to
monitor the conduct of the companies they do business with in particular, their contractors and
suppliers? As a personal believer in the broader view of corporate social responsibility, I believe
that they do. Notwithstanding the fact that all of this outsourcing is legal, and despite the
mitigating factors that I ve argued above that do alleviate these two companies of all of the blame
I still believe that they need to take the higher moral ground. Levi Strauss overall has conducted
itself with far greater corporate social responsibility than Nike has, in my judgment. Strauss for
many years withdrew from China due to their notoriety as a non democratic country with abusive
labor conditions.

The Role Of Satan In John Milton s Paradise Lost And...
The poem Paradise Lost and the novel Northern Lights both have a focus on the traditional
character role of Satan. The character of Satan is a complex one as he is usually considered to be
evil, however they also display natural human traits that the reader or audience can relate to. In
John Milton s Paradise Lost, Satan is a central part of the story. While he is depicted as a hero at
the beginning, this changes as the story develops and Satan starts to behave in a more sinister
manner. This is shown in the ways that Satan tries to rebel against God and Heaven, as he does
not want the structure and order that comes from following a God and instead wants freedom
from this, even if it leads to chaos. Satan does not allow anyone or anything to get in the way of
completing his task. His dedication to his cause is his only reason for doing what he does, even if
it causes death and destruction on the way. Philip Pullman also portrays the character or role of
Satan in the His Dark Materialstrilogy through the character of Lord Asriel. He is very similar to
Milton s Satan in many ways due to Pullman s inspiration from Paradise Lost; however Lord
Asriel uses different methods to achieve his aims. While Asriel would have been considered as a
purely evil character in most contexts, the way that he is shown to the reader in Northern Lights
allows the reader to sympathise with his beliefs to some extent. This is what makes the character
of Satan unique as he possesses many qualities that usually belong to the hero of a story; however
he has goals that are morally wrong.
Paradise Lost is an epic poem which depicts a classic tale of good against evil and is very similar to
beginning of the Bible. The story is set on a large scale as Satan tries to overthrow God and
Heaven which leads to Adam and Eve the original humans being exiled from Paradise and the
Garden of Eden. Paradise Lost begins by focusing on Satan, an angel who lost a battle against
God. In Hell he creates Pandemonium and tries to create a plan to overthrow the tyrannical God
and Heaven, even though he was created as an angel. Satan eventually decides to leave his
dominion of Hell and travel through Chaos until he reaches Heaven and by changing

telling the story from, but in the film he is writing the story in a sanitarium. This speaks
volumes about Nick s mental state after leaving Long Island and all of the palaver surrounding
it. Nick intended to reach the American Dream in a similar way to Gatsby. He wanted to

He realizes that in order to understand a situation objectively, he must confront it honestly and
purely. Doing this promotes his well being because facing situations in this manner helps him gain
an insightful perspective, which gives him an advantage over those who do not understand the
whole picture. Ellsworth Toohey, for example, encourages others to abandon independent thought
in favor of a twisted sense of selflessness designed to turn them into drones feeding off the
speculation of others. While talking to his niece, Toohey declares that consciously focusing on one
s own emotions makes a person become selfish and egotistical. He explains, That is why the mind is
so unreliable. We must not think. We must believe (365). Essentially, Toohey preaches that people
must abandon free thought because it causes them to dwell on their own emotions, which makes
them egotistical. However, ignoring free thought requires that one ignore the truth. Roark, on the
other hand, believes that one must not reject his own emotions so that he may find the truth and
reach his or her goals, as long as those goals do not interfere with the well being of another. In this
sense, Toohey and Roark uphold two totally opposing ideas, further establishing a contrast between

Ninety Nine Restaurant Case Study
Since 1952 when founder Charlie Doe established the Ninety Nine Restaurant he has always
instilled the idea of serving others well before a mission statement was ever written. Charlie Doe
wanted a restaurant where he can serve everyone in the Ninety Nine Restaurant including guests,
team members, stake holders, and the community with respect. In essence, Charlie wanted a place
where everyone could get no nonsense foodat down to earth prices, and where they d be treated
right by people who had a passion to serve . This idea was created when the restaurant was
founded in 1952 and is still evident today. With this idea of serving also comes the ability to cater

that is, is body weight equal to or greater than 168?) One thing the data scientist should always to
is to get an assessment of how the chosen algorithm is performing, as far as accuracy is
concerned. Different packages and different methods often use different algorithms and it is
important to understand how source code makes the data behave so that we can better analyze,
predict, model, and visualize our data. It would be like knowing which port our ship has sailed to

LAD is another statistical optimality criterion and the statistical optimization technique that
relies on it. Similar to other celebrity like optimization techniques, LAD aims to find a function
which closely approximate our data. Trimmed Mean: Involves the calculation of the mean after
discarding given parts of a probability distribution or sample at the high and low end, and
typically discarding an equal amount of both. This number of points to be discarded is usually
given as a percentage of the total number of points, but may also be given as a fixed number of
points. Also known as Truncated Mean. For classification trees, phi coefficient, Gini Index, or
twoing are the most commonly used approximation techniques. Phi Coefficient: Is a measure of
association for two binary variables (n is total number of observations). Gini Index: The Gini
Index loss measures inequality or dispersion. Another step data scientist should consider before
finalizing his predictions on data, pruning the tree is usually common approach, which I am
going to cover in the next section 2.4 Tree Pruning Pruning is a technique we use to reduce the
size of decision trees by getting rid of sections of our tree that provide little to no power for our
classification. Pruning process helps us reduce the complexity of the finalized classifier, hence
providing a better and improved accuracy on our predictions. Since a

Kroger Competitive Advantage
This paper will discuss the kroger company s strategy and competitive advantage. It will also
discuss competition and strategy from rival company Walmart. Research will show whether
Kroger uses an offensive or defensive strategic approach to business practices. It will discuss
mergers and acquisitions of The KrogerCompany (Bethel University, 2017).
Strategy
The Kroger Company uses the broad differentiation strategy. They have business in at least eight
different market segments. They operate two thousand, two hundred and fifty five stores across
America and operate under twenty four banners. Their market position ranks among the highest in
the nation. They also have a strong bargaining power because of their many endeavors into
different market areas. Kroger supermarkets have been in business for one hundred thirty four
years and have made a substantial contribution to the business world (Annual report, 2017). The
Kroger Company owns and operates most of its banner companies. They have convenience stores,
fuel centers, pharmacies, fine jewelry, apparel, grocery stores, manufacturing sites, clinics, and
financial services. According to Bethel University, (2017) this is called the broad differentiation

Malcom X Family Service Essay
The differences between the New Deal reformers and the child welfare workers who provided
services to Malcom X s family was that the child welfare workers were not providing adequate
and equal services to the family(Haley, 1996). Malcom X s stated that when the social worker
came to their home they were looked at as if they were not people . Even though Malcom X s
family was receiving some kind of service, to the eyesight of these people Malcom x s stated that
they were just like things . The social welfare system did not treated them with respect. The state
welfare people were after the Malcom X s and his brother and sister for placement. Their purpose
was not to keep together the family, but to separate all of the children. Back in Malcom X s time

Furthermore, as time progresses, black children were place in institutions (Harley, 1996). For the

The concept of identity is a very wide and subjective...
The concept of identity is a very wide and subjective area. Identities can both be chosen and
given, and are sources of disconnection and connection. Identities are not solely applied to
people, but to places too. A places identity can both positively and negatively affect peoples
identities. My essay will examine the argument that places can be a source of inclusion and
exclusion for specific communities, how identities are constructed and linked to other places and
identities are marked and unmarked through othering and also how a persons identity can be
impacted upon by place identity and how both imagined and idealised past of a place can impact

The people then who live on the street are seen negatively due to their different way of living,
rather than ourselves living in our houses and apartments. The cities and the streets are often
perceived negatively, such as dangerous, crowded, dreary and busy for example. This then has
repercussions on how street people are viewed, as the identity of their place of living affects
their own identity. Places like people are attributed identity. Places can be diverse, noisy, relaxing
and welcoming. Some of these identities are imagined, some are real. People give these identities
to places through their own identity, in return for this, peoples identities are connected to where
they live. Where we live will impact on how we are seen, it is through a process called discourse
that our identities are positioned, dependant on where we live, this could be in the cities or the
countryside. The countryside had often had an imagined or idealised past, which can make some
feel excluded or included. Some social scientists such as Engels and Toqueville considered that it is
the urbanisation that created inequalities, because it was felt unevenly by the population. As a
result of this country life became portrayed as an idyll and authentic in comparison to the
imbalanced life in the cities. There is a relational identity between the countryside and the towns, a
relationship of which the meaning of countryside is defined with relation to

Volunteering At Mattel Children s Hospital
Service to the community has been important to my family for as long I can remember. My
earliest recollections of community service were at 10 years of age when I would join my father
in cleaning up the town pond, and my mother in feeding the homeless. With this early introduction
to service, I find being a person for others natural, and have always found ways in which I can give
back. Volunteering at Mattel Children s Hospital was my first clinical experience, and the
meaningful impact I made there will always stay close to my heart. Many of the children I spent
time with were extremely sick, and it opened my eyes to the suffering accompanied with ill health.
Even though I had never been in their situation, I could understand their frustration,

A Brief Note On The Gas Mixture Of Hydrogen And Carbon...
1.2.3 Gasification and Syngas Syngas is a gas mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which
are products from gasfireing any hydrocarbon material such as coal at a high pressure and
temperature, 30 bar and 1500 В°K. The present of the oxygen is the primary difference between
gasification and combustion. When a feed gasfire, the oxygen or air is injected in small amount
allowing part of the feed to burn completely which supply the required heat and pressure, then, the
heat will break down the feed into synthesis gas (Higman Burgt, 2003). This process consists of six

Why Is Shakespeare Still So Popular
In this text I will explain how and why Shakespeare is still so popular and the themes of his
plays. Shakespeare is still so popular due to his plays and the themes he used in them. His
themes are very interesting and vary form time to time in fact some of his plays are based on
ambitions, other like Romeo and Juliet are based on love and hate as well as death. Most of
Shakespeare s plays have the characteristic of containing more than one theme in fact many of
our TV shows, cartoons, movies and etc are based on his plays. One example of this is the movie
Gnomeo and Juliet which is in a way a parody but in another way is a simplified version of the
long and difficult story of Romeo and Juliet. Not only the themes are are very intriguing but... Show

As well as this as a poet Shakespeare has an excellent use of his poetic talent in the plays as most
of the dialogues are poetic. In the play Romeo and Juliet we can see how Shakespeare adds
poetic and Roma tic touches to the dialogues between the two star crossed lovers. Another great
thing that makes him so pupil are is the versatility of his plays, in fact they can be manipulated
to achieve different things like movies or maybe a book that can then be readapted for the
different ages and types of people that will then read or watch it. The fact that Shakespeare plays
can be manipulated is very good as this can create many new opportunities for cartoonists as they
can keep the main plot the same while changing the characters and locations as well as period in

Theme Of Passion In King Lear
Practice can make things perfect, but it is the passion that persuades them. In King Lear, Lear s
first phase of development is about his wild enthusiasm (passion). First and foremost of the play,
Lear enters his castle and begins to discuss the division of Britain between his daughters: Goneril,
Regan, and Cordelia. Lear says that he will handover his throne, but whoever expresses greater
amount of their affection shall get the largest bounty; Which of you shall we say doth loveus most?
(1.1.52). While Goneril and Regan succeed in their flattery; Lear s energetic love is destroyed in
light of the fact that Cordelia did not exaggerate her love towards her father. This outcomes in King
Learabandoning and banishing Cordelia. Close to the end of the play, Lear strolls in (at British
camp) with the dead Cordelia in his arms: I might have saved her; now she s gone for ever!
Cordelia, Cordelia! Stay a little. Ha! What is t thou sayest? Her voice was ever soft, Gentle, and

Act 1, Lear arrives at the Duke s (Albany) castle. After a while, Goneril comes in search for Lear

  • 2. Career And Interest Self-Assessment Results Self Assessment I.Career and Interest Self assessment Results This self assessment test was something that narrowed down possible interest and helped the participants open their mind to new careers. In fact when I finished my test I was able to view the different careers that feel in my interest category. Taking a survey and calculating the different likes each field had accumulated determined my test outcome. After gathering the likes that had accumulated I was able to determine which inventory category was strongest. My top inventory was conventional which states, I am one who likes to follow set rules and procedures, and prefers detail and clear lines of authority (Self Assessment, n.d.). My second strongest inventory category was Social, which states, I like work activities that promote learning and development (Self Assessment, n.d.). Not only did I learn what my strongest inventory was I also had the ability to learn which jobs fell under those categories. Out of each category within the level 5 education requirement, I had one job that stood out over the others; category one conventional had Math Professor. This job is something that would be interesting, but I am not sure if I would want this job as a career. The social category had one job that also caught my eye, health educator. After all the research and looking at each one of the categories and the possible job opportunities I have come to the realization that the test are estimates. I personally do not think ... • 3. Gulf War Syndrome Essay Gulf War Syndrome The Gulf War Syndrome was identified after the Gulf War in 1991. Thousands of troops from the US, British, and Canadian developed symptoms after the war. This Syndrome has been researched since the end of the Gulf War and still not all the answers have been found. Not only have thousands of troops suffered from this syndrome, but also their families have developed some symptoms related to this syndrome. It is important to inform our nation of this new disease because there is still no cure, and GWS can be our next conflict relating to AIDS and Cancer. This research is dedicated to people who are uneducated about Gulf War Syndrome. After reading many articles about Gulf War Syndrome there is still no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Gulf War Syndrome has over 20 symptoms that have been reported by the veterans of the Gulf War. According to Stephen Straus in the journal The Lancet, over 50,000 troops returned as changed men. Reports showed of vascular instability, hyperventilation, bacilliuria, and other physiological and laboratory anomalies in the Gulf War veterans. When the problem began to exist, the US alone funded $ 115,000,000 for targeted research on the unknown syndrome. Four thousand gulf war veterans and men who also served in Bosnia were mailed questionnaires about deployment, exposures, symptoms, and illnesses. The main finding was that the Gulf War ... • 4. Positive Effects Of Externality A teenager just turned sixteen and has their driving permit, on their birthday they decide to take the driving test. They end up passing the test allowing them to get their driver s license. The parents are really proud of their kid and take them to the car dealership to look at a car.The kid ends up finding a car and the parents buy the car for a birthday present. The addition of another driver and car onto the road ultimately creates more traffic on the street. The addition of a new car and driver could be viewed as an externality, but what exactly is an externality? Economist Arthur Pigou stated that an externality is the , costs imposed or benefits conferred on others that are not taken into account by the person taking the action (Pigou AP, 1920). The Merriam Webster dictionary defines an externality as a secondary or unintended effect(Merriam Webster, 1978). In other words an externality in economics happens whenever two parties are engaging in business and a bystander is affected by the action that they had no part of being in. These actions can either be beneficial or harmful to a third party. 2. Positive Externalities Externalities can usually have two different outcomes, those being a positive or negative outcome to the third party bystander. An externality that is considered a positive outcome is one that will benefit a company or group that is not particularly involved in the activities of the two parties that are working together. • 5. A Reader- Oriented Approach to Edgar Alan Poe s the Tell-... If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? A Reader Oriented approach to Edgar Alan Poe s The Tell Tale Heart The Titular question is an old philosophical riddle for which a wide range of metaphysical and non metaphysical solution has been offered. The answers differ based on the perspective of the interpreter. Judging these answers is neither possible nor desirable for us, but the riddle and the ensuing debates attest to the veracity of one of the most basic tenets of reader response theory: If a text does not have a reader, it does not exist or at least, it has no meaning. It s reader, with whatever experience he brings to the text, who gives it its meaning. Of particular significance is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrator is a psychopath with wacky motivations. If we accept this convenient explanation then we have to deal with another question: could a madman talks with such lucidity and exactness? The answer that Ken Frieden gives to this question is a positive one. He downplays the contrast between the sane narrative and mad narrator: The discrepancy between sane narrator and madman perhaps shows the error of assuming that linguistic normalcy implies psychological normalcy. Friedan took it for granted that the narrator is mad because he kills an old man for no reason. He is doubly mad, Friedan said, when he imagines he hears the pounding of the dead man s heart and gives away the crime he had concealed. Yet the narrator tells a coherent tale, as if to demonstrate out of spite that he is sane, refuting the ordinary belief that he must be mad. On the other side of the road, there are critics who are sympathetic toward the narrator and dismiss any suggestion of madness. Daniel Hoffman, for instance is willing to believe the narrator s claim about the Old man s eye. Hoffman reads the vulture like eye as a Freudian Father Figure. He takes the old man as a father figure; whose Eye becomes the all seeing surveillance of the child by the father. (Bloom 53) . This surveillance is, Hoffman writes, the inculcation into his soul ... • 6. The Importance Of Flashbulb Memories How can a human forget to turn the lights off when they leave the house, but remember exactly where they were when JFK was assassinated? The answer to this phenomenon has long been researched and the answer is a term referred to as flashbulb memories, which can be defined as a detailed and vivid memory that is stored on one occasion and retained for a lifetime (Schachter, Gilbert, Wegner, Nock, 2015). These memories can be composed of insignificant but vivid details about the situation in which the news was received (Demiray Freund, 2015). Flash bulb memories are believed to encompass various memories including positive and negative events that have affected entire nations or just one individual, and have correlation with age, proximity, and importance.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, just as not all memories are positive not all flashbulb memories are positive. A negative flash bulb memory may be an American remembering exactly where they were when JFK was assassinated, while a positive memory for the same individual may be remembering exactly where they were when they learned of Osama Bin Laden s assassination. The idea that one type of flashbulb memory is more likely to be created than the other has long been debated. A recent study by Demirav and Freund shows that neither of these memories appears to be more prevalent than the other. There participants of various ages and ethnicities were asked two recall the death of both Michael Jackson (negative flashbulb memory) and Osama Bin Laden (positive flashbulb memory), while both memories had different effects emotionally on the participants the recollection of a flash bulb memory was the same (Demirav and ... She does this by remaining professional in answering the questions that were asked. When the debates get heated, Clinton is the candidate with the right temperament. She also presents herself as being more prepared and knowledgeable. Something else Hillary does well is sticking to the topics and facts that are being discussed and being crystal clear in delivering her information. What Hillary does well is valuing all facts when acting in response to questions. With this in mind, Hillary is presenting herself as transparent. She is crystal clear in her explanations. We know that she is using fact, because everything she says can be supported in some way. When listening to the debates, Hillary mentions several times that she has a fact checker on her website, Hillaryclinton.com. However, Trump struggled with truthfulness throughout the debate. A recent article about the first debate says, The Washington Post rated about 65 percent of his statements to be Four Pinocchio s (their worst rating for lies), and PolitiFact has scored only 16% of his statements as true or mostly true. This severs his credibility and brings his judgement into question. Trump also had trouble answering specific questions regarding his plans and had a hard time keeping his temper under control when confronted about having inaccurate facts. To add on to this, in the second debate he also weaved around tough questions about ungraceful remarks he had made in 2005, constantly calling it just locker room talk. Yet, Clinton s efforts of being clear in delivering her information proves that she doesn t want the audience to think she is keeping secrets so she can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Physical Therapy Reflection Paper It was the summer of 2015, it was one the biggest transformation years in high school athletics going from my freshman year to my sophomore year. There was a different plan for my summer other than sports. I had my knee in a brace the whole summer while having crutches underneath my armpits for most of the summer. This brace was large, it went from my ankle to my upper thigh with 4 straps and metal rods on the side of my legs. I was putting all my trust into the brace to keep my knee stable and not hurt it more. It was my first day of Physical TherapyI was at Summit Orthopedics in Vadnais Heights, and I smelt the same things as I did the time I came the first time to OrthoQuick. It was the smell of hand sanitizer and elder people. What I saw was the elder people waiting for their name to be called to go back with their physical therapist. My physical therapist name was Derek. He brought me back to a room that was no bigger than an average observation room. We started physical therapy by engaging my quad and then releasing it. The part that I was surprised by the most is the electrical stimulation. They put patch on each side of my quad and connect wires to the patches, and it felt like my quad was vibrating and tingling on a beat. The time I was there before my surgery was one of the hardest day to comprehend in my life it was the day that we went over the MRI. It showed that there was fluid behind the cartilage in my femur Dr. Sekenzel then told me that I was going to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The whole idea of this system has been existent from the early days and it has spread like a house on fire from the United States to the European continents now. However the first bride hailed from England where the English women went to another continent altogether to get married to men. Swedish Mail Order Brides work on the same lines and the idea although originating from the English it has now become a very important part of the European continent. The primary reason for which Swedish Mail Order Brides became so popular in Europe is because most men worked there as farmers in the primitive days with very few women around. The best way to advertise about these brides was by publishing ads in newspapers declaring interest in searching for a life partner. In fact at that time there were a lot of rumors about women running away to get married to ranchers or farmers, which is why services like this became so highly popular as these women did not want to take any risk when it came to finding their soul mate. Humanities And Science Lewis Thomas Analysis Humanities and Science, by Lewis Thomas, spins around the concept of losing interest in future prospective scientists as a result due to loss of interest of current generations. It begins with Thomas informing you of Lord Kelvin and his feelings surrounding numbers and observation. He wants you to understand that Kelvin s feelings were no observation of nature [is] worth paying serious attention to unless it [can] be stated in precisely quantitative terms . His ideas unearthed many skeptics because they couldn t understand how to quantify certain things. I agree with Thomas underlying statement that the fun has been taken out of science. There are volumes of students slugging through college and med school for a title and not for their love of science. An even more sad realization are that kids are not even pursuing a scientific career because of the idea that everything has already been figured out and there is nothing left to discover. This is the current day problem, kids are turned off by the field of science. The only way to revive it is to ask questions. If people don t start asking questions about what has been discovered, then there is nowhere to go. • 11. Summary Of The Causation Of Vietnam War A Summary of the Causation of the Vietnam War Traditionally war serves as an instrument for peace with a defined winner and loser. This was not the case in the Vietnam War. As the longest war in U.S history, it spanned nearly 20 years encompassing 5 different presidential terms. The war in Vietnam served as a limited proxy war between the United States and Soviet Union fought to combat the spread of communism, to preserve a democratic state in Southeast Asia, and to limit the power of the Soviet Union. Due to the complexity of the Vietnam war itself one cannot categorize the war in terms of winning or losing , rather one must look at the political, ideological, and historical causations of the war In the aftermath of WWII most European countries fell under the influence of the communist Soviet Union. At the time the Soviet Union was rapidly spreading it ideals of Marxist equality throughout eastern Europe (History.com). • 12. Mistakes In Into Thin Air Mistakes That Lead to Tragedies and Precautions That Lead to Success The best way to bring attention to a problem is tragedy. Unfortunately, this means reform will not happen until the loss or harm of life has already occurred. One example of this was seen in New York, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. This fire was the cause of 146 deaths and many more injuries; however, this lead to new law regulating work safety standards. While this is a tragedy that caused reform in 1911, the same method of reform stands today. This can be seen in the novel, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. The novel is an account of what happened on the mountain during the 1996 Everest expedition. While the expedition started off with high hopes and dreamers ready ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to continue climbing Everest, many aspects of climbing need to be improved before more people endanger their lives to try and reach the roof of the world. The guides have some areas that need the most reform. During the ascension of Everest the guides made a plethora mistakes that seemed insignificant but only aided in disaster. The guides first mistake is allowing any bloody idiot [with enough determination] up Everest (Krakauer 153). By allowing any bloody idiot with no climbing experience to try and climb the most challenging mountain in the world, the guides are almost inviting trouble. Having inexperienced climbers decreases the trust a climbing team has in one another, causing an individual approach to climbing the mountain and more reliance on the guides. While this approach appears fine, this fault is seen in addition to another in Scott Fischer s expedition Mountain Madness. Due to the carefree manner in which the expedition was run, clients [moved] up and down the mountain independently during the acclimation period, [Fischer] had to make a number of hurried, unplanned excursions between Base Camp and the upper camps when several clients experienced problems and needed to be escorted down, (154). Two problems present in the Mountain Madness expedition were seen before the summit push: the allowance of inexperienced climbers and an unplanned climbing regime. A third problem that aided disaster was the difference in opinion in regards to the responsibilities of a guide on Everest. How Did The French Conquer Indochina Not intending to conquer Indochina all at once, the French aimed to convert the Vietnamese to Catholicism, establish a strategic presence in Southeast Asia, and secure products such as rice, coffee, and rubber. The French progressively increased their control over Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos) over a prolonged duration of time, more than 350 years. Welcomed into Indochina for their specialized skills and their association to European suppliers of western merchandise and weapons, the Europeans started taking advantage. The French East India Company, a commercial enterprise, obtained sufficient traction in Indochina in 1688. Therefore a system was formed which carried on for centuries. When French soldiers,... After the French tried to stop the Viet Minh resistance in 1946, they broke away and war began. In fact, the French effort all along was hindered by lack of resources and limited support in France, and they were now far from a superpower. The Vietnamese ultimately won the war. • 14. Michel Foucault s Conception Of Discourse By definition discourse simply means communication, but it can encompass a whole different idea which relates to why we say what we say or do what we do in society a cerain way. The discourse theory was first presented by French philosopher Michel Foucault which states that discourse is simply systems of thoughts composed of ideas, attitudes, courses of action, beliefs and practices that systematically construct the subjects and the worlds of which they speak. For instance, the idea of discourse can be seen with the whole idea of 9/11. Before September 11th, 2001 the numbers 9 and 11 had no apparent meaning, but after the whole incident simply saying the numbers 9 and 11 have a whole significant meaning around the globe. The government, or more specific the Bush administration was able to invade foreign countries, including invading Afghanistan as a way to root out and fight terrorism. The government consistently expressed that terrorist are dangerous and therefore we must do anything in order to protect our country which made up discourses in our society through the power of the institution of government which influenced society. The government was able to justify the use of force on foreign countries, as a way to protect our country s national security , and society has never questioned the government s actions because who would if it is protecting our country. Thus, with the acceptance of these ideas by society the government was able to justify their actions like increasing airport security, and invading Afghanistan because they know how to protect our country. The new discourses relating to terrorism allows the institutions like the government use their power, in post 9/11 can use extreme measure to deal with them. • 15. Sea Oak Analysis In Sea Oak, George Saunders composes a story that examines social classes by applying satire. He uses the narrator s Aunt Bernie to teach a valuable lesson about life. The valuable lesson is that one should appreciate what they have in life my making the most out of it. It is essential for people to acknowledge what they have, on the grounds that one day it might be gone. In Sea Oak, Saunders represents two Aunt Bernie s, a before life Aunt Bernie and an after life Aunt Bernie. With the before life Aunt Bernie, she lives with her nephew, her niece Min, her daughter Jade, and their babies. Although she experiences poverty, mistreatment, and also lives in an unsafe neighborhood, she appreciates what she has. She experiences poverty all of her life, and experiences mistreatment when she takes care of the grandfather; he leaves her with nothing when he dies. Grandpa needed her to keep the house after Grandma died. Then he died and left all his money to a woman that none of us had ever heard of. (Saunders, 95). Aunt Bernie was mistreated because she acts a caretaker and it backfired on her. Aunt Bernie handles the situation of the grandfather not leaving her money by not reacting, she remained not bitter. In addition to, Aunt Bernie is appreciative of what life hands her when Saunders describes what she had received for Christmas one year. When I say I am tired of being broke, she says that Grandpa once gave her pencils for Christmas. She was so thrilled [that] she sat around sketching horses all day on the back of used envelopes (Saunders, 95). As Saunders continues to build on the story of Aunt Bernie s before life, readers want to know, can Aunt Bernie discover a plan in time enough to remove her family from poverty and living at risk, or will it be too late? In Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, Alison Bechdel composes a graphic memoir to inform readers about her journey of coming out as a lesbian to her parents. • 16. Social Equality Essay Social Equality Synthesis of American History and Today The development of America as a nation was largely influenced by several key points in its history that gave rise to a country that is continuously struggling with social equality. First, the consolidation of the United States Constitution, in 1786, failed to legalize slavery, which contentiously allowed slavery to continue, dehumanizing blacks to lower positions in America s social hierarchy. Next, the changing dynamics of social roles redefined the traditional male and female societal responsibilities and obligations that generated a divide of gender issues. The issue prompted a surge of feminist activists that sought for gender equality that is still being debated today. Finally, in a current and contemporary example, President Trump s aggressive stance on immigration has forced many immigrants to be fearful of their current status in the country. This issues has been severely centered around race, which has been the core issue and debate with President Trump, Democrats, and the nation. From the 17th century to the 21st century, the United States debated and still debates social equality and what it means to be citizen and a member of society that was reflective through the degradation of slaves and blacks, women rights and their elevated roles in society, racial injustice of African Americans, and the immigration system of contemporary America. • 28. The Role Of Satan In John Milton s Paradise Lost And... The poem Paradise Lost and the novel Northern Lights both have a focus on the traditional character role of Satan. The character of Satan is a complex one as he is usually considered to be evil, however they also display natural human traits that the reader or audience can relate to. In John Milton s Paradise Lost, Satan is a central part of the story. While he is depicted as a hero at the beginning, this changes as the story develops and Satan starts to behave in a more sinister manner. This is shown in the ways that Satan tries to rebel against God and Heaven, as he does not want the structure and order that comes from following a God and instead wants freedom from this, even if it leads to chaos. Satan does not allow anyone or anything to get in the way of completing his task. His dedication to his cause is his only reason for doing what he does, even if it causes death and destruction on the way. Philip Pullman also portrays the character or role of Satan in the His Dark Materialstrilogy through the character of Lord Asriel. He is very similar to Milton s Satan in many ways due to Pullman s inspiration from Paradise Lost; however Lord Asriel uses different methods to achieve his aims. While Asriel would have been considered as a purely evil character in most contexts, the way that he is shown to the reader in Northern Lights allows the reader to sympathise with his beliefs to some extent. This is what makes the character of Satan unique as he possesses many qualities that usually belong to the hero of a story; however he has goals that are morally wrong. Paradise Lost is an epic poem which depicts a classic tale of good against evil and is very similar to beginning of the Bible. The story is set on a large scale as Satan tries to overthrow God and Heaven which leads to Adam and Eve the original humans being exiled from Paradise and the Garden of Eden. Paradise Lost begins by focusing on Satan, an angel who lost a battle against God.
