Essay On Pcr And Gel Electrophoresis
DNA is commonly used in the modern legal system to release the innocent or imprison the guilty.
There are two different ways to create DNA evidence through science technology, PCR and gel
electrophoresis. Polymerase Chain Reaction, PCR, is used to create thousands to millions of copies of
DNA, out of a small piece of DNA, this piece is used to make a DNA profile. Doing this makes it
easier to test the DNA. PCR is used to find if a gene has pathogens. They are an infectious agent that
creates illness or disease and it s commonly a virus, parasite or bacteria. (1) Gel electrophoresis is the
technique used to separate molecules from DNA, RNA or proteins, based on the size or electric
charge. It can be used in DNA fingerprinting, the findings and purification of nucleic acids and
proteins. Gel electrophoresis can be used to find pathogens that can be found in blood, tissues or
sources like food. (2) These are some of the methods that are used in court and police cases to
discover DNA.
The process of PCR has 3 steps that repeat in cycles shown in image 1. The first one is the separation
of the two strands of the DNA molecule. This happens by the initial material being heated to 95 °C.

Gene probes glow under UV light and have a fluorescent chemical attached to a short section of single
stranded DNA. The chemical is then added to a DNA strand which contains a complimentary base
sequence to a gene responsible for coding for a particular disease, such as cystic fibrosis. If the gene
that is being looked for is present, then the gene probe will fix to it as it has the same complimentary
base sequence. Once the gel is under UV light it will glow where the gene is present showing that the
specific sequence is in the DNA tested. (5) Gel electrophoresis can be used to create a DNA profile for
forensic purposes, paternity testing, evolutionary associations amid organisms and to look for genes

Smoke Signals Essay
The movie Smoke Signals is based on the series of short stories written by Sherman Alexie. Just like
any movie, there is a meaning to it. Before this movie, when I thought of the phrase Native American I
thought of things like feathers and societies that were impeccable. But after watching the movie,
Smoke Signals, it portrays what being a Native American really means. It is not all fun and games.
The protagonist, Victor Joseph, has many hard aspects of his life, but throughout it all he grows
mentally. His personality in the beginning of the movie is mean and despicable, he is filled with wrath,
but as the movie goes on his personality grows gradually. By the ending of the movie, he was a nicer
and kinder. When the movie begins, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Victor has to go to Phoenix to get Arnolds ashes. Thomas offers money to help him get there, but there
is one catch, Thomas has to go with him. Victor automatically says no, but after a little while he
accepts the offer, having a little change of heart. From here on, Victor s personality changes slowly but
surely. As they are on their way to get his father s ashes, two cowboys sit in their seats, but they won t
let them have their seats back, because the boys are Native Americans. This only makes Victor mad,
and Thomas confused. When they get to Phoenix, they meet Suzy Song, who is the woman who lived
next to Arnold. She tells Victor about how much Arnold talked about him, and how much he wished
he could see him. She also told him about how the fire on July 4th was accidently caused by Arnold,
because he was drinking. All these years Victor thought his father didn t want him anymore, but he
just didn t want to hurt his son anymore. After the boys got the ashes, and anything else that Victor
wanted from his father s trailer, they left without telling Suzy goodbye. Victor was still in denial about
his father passing away, and everything that Suzy had told him. He yelled at Thomas telling him he
didn t care about him or anything basically. Victor was driving and almost ran into a car parked on the
side of the road, and went off the road. When they got out of the truck, it was a car accident caused by
a drunk driver.

Pros And Cons Of Banning Texting While Driving
Many people die in texting accidents whether they re the distracted driver or not. Way too many
studies have shown that almost everyday in the United States more than eleven people will die and
1,160 get injured. Being a distracted driver has been shown to take away your attention span by 34%
which makes you have an 11% chance of crashing. 1 It s not just teens who think that they can text
while drive, it is also the adults in our lives who think that they are old and wise enough to do it.
About 660,000 people who drive are attempted to use their phones while they are on the road. 55% of
people in the U.S. are committed to not text and drive, but 35% of people slip on their commitments

One, you have absolutely idea what s going on because you re drinking and driving. Two, you will be
in big trouble either way because it s against the law. Three, you re hurting yourself because you are
making yourself irresponsible, and could have harm to yourself. Those penalties go for both drunk and
texting and driving. Studies have shown that texting while driving is 71% more dangerous than
drinking while driving. Although drinking while driving is bad, texting and driving is worse. 6 More
adults die in drinking accidents than teens because that would mean that they re drinking and driving,
but still being underage. Reverse, more teens die in texting accidents instead of adults, because they
love their phones even more. Texting, drinking and driving? That is hands down the most dangerous
of all. Yes, people actually do it. Although the percentage is lower, which is good, 15% of people in
the United States die from texting, drinking, and driving. 7 Many texters are also becoming less and
less nologiable of the road because there only social life is on their screen. Drunk drivers don t get

Enrique s Journey Summary
Enrique s story begins when his mother, who he loved and idolized, left his sister and him for the
United States. While living in Honduras, his mother, Lourdes, struggled to supply Enrique and his
sister, Belky, with food, clothing, and schooling. Lourdes believed leaving her children and finding
work in the United States would give her children their best future. Lourdes left Belky in the care of
her sister and left Enrique in the care of his father. Lourdes made it to the United States by paying a
smuggler to take her to Miami, but she was abandoned in Los Angeles and forced to find work there.
At first Lourdes worked at a factory until a friend got her a fake social security card and she was able
to work as a nanny in Beverly Hills. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He tells Lourdes that his grandmother is his true mother. She reminds Enrique of all the money and
things she sent him over the years. Enrique starts drinking a lot and going out, not sending his
daughter as much money. He also smokes marijuana again. Back in Honduras, Enrique s family all
criticizes how Maria Isabel spends Enrique s money and raises her baby. Enrique decides he wants to
change his ways for his daughter. He stops drinking and works seven days a week. Enrique and
Lourdes move to Florida for work but Enrique went back to North Carolina. He then returns to Florida
because he missed his mother. After four years in the Unites States, Enrique calls home to Maria
Isabel to tell her he has the money to get her across the border with a smuggler. She agrees to come
and makes arrangements for their daughter. She doesn t say goodbye. In our sociology class, Social
Problems, we learned about poverty. Poverty is described as lacking the economic resources to live at
an adequate standard of living. Lourdes grew up in an impoverished family. They struggled to find
food and clothing. She didn t want her children to grow up the same way so she left them to earn
money for them. Unfortunately, her children still struggled with poverty, especially her son Enrique.

No Prayer in Public Schools Essay
No Prayer in Public Schools
Chapter three of Civil Liberties: Opposing Viewpoints inspired me to research today s issues of school
prayer. To understand how we got to where we are today, I first delved into our countries history of
court cases pertaining to rulings on prayer in schools. Lastly, to update my audience on how our lives
are being affected today, I directed my efforts toward finding current situations. By analyzing these
situations, I gained knowledge for a better understanding of why society needs to be aware of these
controversies. I don t think there should be any form of organized prayer in today s public schools.
Praying in school was first addressed in the Supreme Court in 1962 in the Engle v. Vitale case. The ...

Jaffree case, the court struck down Alabama s moment of silence law by banning observance of daily
moments of silence from public schools when students were encouraged to pray during the silent
periods.
When we move to current issues, we find children like Emily Lesk, a Virginia student, who stands in
the hallway for one minute every morning because she does not agree with the moment of silence her
school holds (Lesk). I feel that many children are faced with difficult decisions, affecting their self
esteem. Some parents put pressure on their kids to get up and walk out, just like Emily does. However,
this draws attention to them and provides an opportunity for their peers to unfairly judge them. On the
other hand, if they remain in class, they will be disobeying their parents.
A wall of separation has long been established and it is understood that two basic institutions of
society can influence one another, yet neither will dominate the other. The issue of teaching religion in
school can be judged by this principal. A strong point addressed, which I agree with, states that
teaching morals and values is different than teaching religion.
Prayer in school has been an issue for many years, and there is not one solution that everyone will
agree on. This issue will hit close to home in a short number of years when I start my own family. I
will be faced with difficult decisions when placing my children into a school. Many pieces of

Selma Sparknotes
The film Selma tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s fight for equal voting rights during the
Civil Rights Movement of 1965. Many events in the beginning of the movie set up the plot for the rest
of the film; Dr. King accepts his Nobel Peace Prize, a group of black girls are killed in a bombing by
the Ku Klux Klan, and Annie Cooper is denied the ability to vote by a white registrar in Selma,
Alabama. King then asks President Lyndon Johnson to pass a law to allow African Americans to freely
register to vote. The unsure president tells King he has more important tasks to focus on and dismisses
the Reverend s request. Throughout the film, King s actions are logged with the time, depicting the
importance within the storyline. These events eventually lead up to King s march to the voting ...

courthouse in Selma, Alabama. After punching the sheriff because he poked her neck with a club,
Cooper is arrested. Dr. King travels to Selma and when checking into his hotel, is punched by a white

Theodore Roosevelt Corollary Analysis
The United States has a very long history of military actions that helped expand its power in both
peacetime and war to a much higher status. After independence, the United States took military
control of the North American continent, acquiring territory from the native peoples, and from other
countries such as Britain, France, Mexico, and more countries. Not only seizing territory but also
offering help to any allies who needed it. The Roosevelt Corollary written by Theodore Roosevelt in
1904, is a great example of how the expansion of American influence has spread throughout North and
Latin America, and also Asia. In the corollary, it basically says that if a nation cannot help keep up
with its standard, as well as having chronic wrongdoing, the intervention of the United States will
have to occur. Mainly this document is speaking to Latin America and the Caribbean /Central
America. In the last few decades of the19th century, it was a period of imperial spreading for the
United States. The American story took a different route from that of its European rivals, however,

Concept Of Absolute Purchasing Power Parity
Introduction and significance of the research question
Does the concept absolute purchasing power parity (PPP) stay true that the goods in one country
should cost the same in another country after implying the exchange rates? (For example, the pound
cost of imported goods should be the same as the price of the same goods being sold in the UK).
Absolute purchasing power parity is a concept with the assumption of goods having the same price
after exchange rates between countries. However, I want to find out if this is always true or not since it
plays an important role that differentiates from the relative purchasing power parity . There is an
assumption that if there are any deviations in the price in one of the two countries, then the exchange
rate and the relative prices should adjust to accommodate, equating to the level where the basket of
goods have the same price in these two countries (Moffatt, 2014).
The data and methodology
I will be comparing exchange rates between two countries, these are the UK (£) and the USA ($) to
see if the changes are enough to make any differences or whether just negligible. I will select data
from the year 1980 to 2015 in yearly intervals. Comparing each year with the previous year. These
will be compared using Excel and Minitab and displayed as a simple linear regression model.
The absolute PPP should mean that ERt = ERt 1 + u.
I will be using the formula ERt = a0 +bERt 1 + u = 0 and comparing that with the traditional ef = a0 +

Nobody Owens In The Graveyard Book By Neil Gaiman
Life is such a diverse and mysterious topic, is it a journey? What is its purpose? How does the science
behind it work? Well, in the book The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman illustrates this beautifully,
showing how the protagonist, Nobody Owens is a dynamic character and changes throughout the
story.
One way Bod changes is how he realizes that life is the journey between being born and death, and he
wants to live life to its full extent. Before, he only thought that life was a bland passage into death and
the afterlife, his world. But after some time, Bod matures and when he is getting ready to leave the
graveyard, he says to Silas what he wants to do: I want to see life. I want to hold it in my hands. I want
to leave a footprint on the sand of a desert island. I want to play football with people...I want
everything (Gaiman 133). This shows that Bod has matured over the story. ... Show more content on

forever, Silas responds that Bod still ...needs to live (Gaiman 284). This statement means that Silas

when Silas asks Bod whether or not he wants him to walk him to the front gate, Bod responds that it
would be Best if I do it on my own (Gaiman 134). This also shows that he has changed and matured

Realism and Romanticism within The Red Badge of Courage
Realism and Romanticism Within The Red Badge of Courage
The Red Badge of Courage, written by Stephan Crane in 1895 gives a detailed, yet, fictional account
of Henry Fleming, a farm boy who joins the Union Army in the American Civil War. Before Henry is
battle tested, he ponders his courage and questions whether he will be able to fight the urge to flee
from battle. Henry does indeed end up deserting his comrades however he ultimately overcomes his
guilt and becomes one of the best fighters in his regiment. In order to depict a realistic and relatable
war scene, Crane includes Henry s realistic thought process and emotion in his struggles to maintain
courage. The narrative simply revealed war in a manner that was divergent to all prior forms of
literature in the 19th century. Previous novels predominately entailed the glorious and romantic
aspects of war rather than the tedious, gritty, and gruesome details of close combat. Instead, Crane
broke the barriers of literary norms in war related literature; the novel depicted a pragmatic experience
of combat from the eyes of an inexperienced and frightened youth. In the Red Badge of Courage,
Stephan Crane primarily uses religious and gory imagery as well as symbolism to contrast the
romantic conceptions of war versus the reality of experiencing battle.
One of the primary methods used to illustrate realism throughout The Red Badge of Courage would be
imagery. The entire book is essentially an outpouring of impressions and

Emphasizing The True Meaning Of Poems By Andrew Marvell...
Kinsey Jordan
Mrs. Russler
English Honors I

Emphasizing the True Meaning of Poems Around the seventeenth century the poets Andrew Marvell
and John Donne expressed their feelings through poetry. Both John Donne, born in 1572 and Andrew
Marvell, born in 1621 in England, are known for their ideas of metaphysical poetry. Metaphysical
poetry is a persuasive poem that uses a conceit. It focuses on imagery, paradoxes, arguments,
philosophy and religion. Andrew Marvell s To His Coy Mistress and John Donne s A Valediction:
Forbidding Mourning, focus on the theme of love, which was trending at that time. Although both
poems justify the importance and essence of love, the tone differs in each poem making them distant
from each other. The figurative language also makes the two poems different. However, they both
focus on the idea of Carpe Diem, enjoying the moment and not worrying about the future. Through
comparing these poems, the differences and similarities result in the true understanding and
effectiveness of the poems. In To His Coy Mistress, Andrew Marvell does not perceive true, fervent
love, but rather that time and beauty will not last. The tone of this poem is sad, but the author seems to
make it happier. There is an example shown in the first stanza;
Had we but world enough and time...we would sit down, and think which way to walk, and pass our
long love s day. (1 4) Marvell appears to be straying from the idea of Carpe Diem; stating that if

Roman Weapons Research Paper
Since ancient times, weapons, armor and maneuverability have been a continual growing dynamic in
warfare. Armored units have invariably been a primary weapon of war. Beginning in prehistoric times,
sleds were used to move heavy objects. Later on, in the ancient middle east, horse drawn carts were
utilized to transport weapons. Chariots later evolved from those carts. The most developed horse
pulled chariots were lightweight, two wheeled, chariots and armored. Most chariots riders armed
themselves with archers or spear men; this concept was also used in the evolution of the modern day
tank. These chariots and their operators were the beginning of the what we know as the tank
today(Tucker 1 2). During the Roman period, protective armor was also developing. Siege engines,
which include battering rams, siege towers, and armored catapults were usually used when efforts
were made to take control of castles and/or fortified enemy positions. During the Roman Imperial and
Middle ages, these tank predecessors were protected by thick wooden boards all around. In the times
of knighthood, those engineering maneuvering weapons added iron and lighter weight steel. This was

Those Winter Sundays Figurative Language
In the poem Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden, is about a man looking back on his childhood
experience, and relationship with his father. The father of this man was the type of person to do
arduous labor, and be unacknowledged for it. Although the father deserved to not be acknowledged
because he only went through this labor for his obligation and expectations to do so, not out of love,
compassion, nor alacrity of any kind. He was an austere, anodyne, and abusive father but, his son still
believes he could have been a better son by behaving more appropriately, and giving him at least a
time where someone recognized and acknowledged his efforts through gratitude. The son thought that
if he did so, then things between them may have been better. Through the wording, consonance, strong
words, and meaning in the poem Those Winter Days exemplify the poor relationship between father

Coming Of Age Throughout Mississippi, By Anne Moody
Being born into a racially divided society, such as America during slavery and the decades after the
Civil War, does not mean that you are born with the knowledge of racism. Racism is something that
we are not born with and that we are raised to experience, follow, or fix. During the 19th century and
all the way up till mid 20th century, racism was one of the biggest issues in America. Former slaves
and anyone who had lived in America for some time, was aware of the racial tension that traveled
through the heart of the nation and only got worse the more south you go. In Anne Moody s
autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi, Moody s life is told through her eyes. It goes through
her childhood until her participation in the Civil Rights movement. One of the major parts in the book
is her slowly realizing the racial divide in America and the disadvantages that her skin color had come
with. All the racism Moody experienced as a child until she was an adolescent led to her decision to
become part of the Civil Rights movement. Growing up in rural Mississippi was a childhood filled
with racism, segregation, and intimidation. These came with every childhood, black or white.
Growing up in rural Mississippi as a black child just added more complications like disadvantages,
lower quality of life, the risk of being lynched, and many more horrors. This was the reality for Anne
Moody. Anne Moody was a young, black girl who grew up living with her father, mother and younger
siblings.

Going Beyond Rationality In The Phaedrus By Plato
Socrates is referring to going beyond human reason. In the Phaedrus, Plato says, There are two kinds
of madness; one is produced by human infirmity, the other by a divine release from the ordinary ways
of men. Aristotle says that plants have a nutritive soul, while animals have a sensitive soul and humans
have a rational soul. Imagine a plant going beyond its nutritive soul into the realm of an animate or
rational soul. For example, the Ents from Lord of The Rings, they are sensitive in that they walk and
they are rational in that they talk and reason. Similarly, Plato is saying that humans in the second state
of madness, divine madness, move beyond the capacity of their rational soul into the realm of the
divine. That is why he uses the term possessed, because the artist is essentially being possessed by the
power of the divine working through him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For Plato, mental illness is a lack of rational capacity or a failing of the rational capacity, which is why
he calls it an infirmity. However, divine madness is going beyond the rational capacity. If rationality is
a pitcher full of water, mental illness is an empty pitcher, while divine madness is a pitcher
overflowing with water. Going beyond nature may sound like a good thing, however, Plato believes
we should not go there. He thinks it is best to operate according to our nature (as the pitcher full of
water). Therefore, divine madness, while separate from mental illness is still not a positive

Why Is Mary Todd Lincoln Crazy
While there is much to be said about Mary Todd Lincoln, she is hardly mentioned because most of the
focus is on her husband. Her sanity has been questioned several times by historians. While she did
struggle with some emotional and mental health issues, she was not crazy. To prove this, it is
important to understand her childhood and upbringing, as well as any conditions she suffered from.
Next it is crucial to examine her life at the White House, especially since it was during such a tense
period in American history. Finally, one must consider the case against her that was presented by her
own son who deemed her crazy and sent her to Bellevue Place, a mental hospital. I will dive into all
these topics and sum it all up in my concluding paragraph. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Her own son, Robert, requested the trial after what he said was a difficult decision which he said was
making him anxious. He also seemed to think after Mary s condition that she was happy in the
asylum. During the trial itself, while there were doctors that testified against her, none of them were
actually mental health specialists. In fact, none of them even attempted to diagnose her with mental
disorders during the trial, which makes sense knowing that none of them were certified to do so. They
all called her crazy and moved on. Nonetheless, she was declared insane and sent to an asylum called
Bellevue Place, where she arrived on May 20, 1875. Unlike other patients at Bellevue, Mary
continued to have a semi normal life during her stay; she was allowed to walk around freely instead of
being confined to her room, which certainly would not have happened if she was crazy. She was right
enough in mind at least to help orchestrate her release only four months after she d been admitted, a
feat that would be nearly impossible to accomplish if she were truly insane. All of this further proves

The Rural Care Organizations Improvement Act Of 2015
The Rural Accountable Care Organizations Improvement Act of 2015, introduced to the United States
Senate in May and now being reviewed by the Senate Finance Committee, will amend part of the
Social Security Act to try and improve the way the Medicare shared savings program assigns
beneficiaries by basing the assignments on services of primary care offered by providers, including
Nurse Practitioners (Govtrack.us, 2015). For Nurse Practitioners specifically, this new legislation will
allow nurse practitioner patients to be assigned to Medicare shared savings Accountable Care
Organizations (ACOs) (AANP, 2015). Currently, the Affordable Care Act establishes nurse
practitioners as providers whom are eligible providers in ACOs; however, the current Medicare Shared
Savings program statute prevents beneficiaries of Medicare, who are receiving primary care service
from a nurse practitioner, from being assigned to Accountable Care Organizations inside the program
(AANP, 2015). The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (2015) also claim the exclusion of
nurse practitioners must be repealed if ACOs want to develop further as models of practice, which
improve cost effectiveness, patient access and quality. Since 2011, the representative for the 3rd
Congressional District of Tennessee is Chuck Fleischmann of Ooltewah. Fleischmann, like most

The Necklace
Every single story in the entire world has character development in some form. In the story The
Necklace, written by Guy de Maupassant, Mathilde, a middle classed woman that has always wanted
to be wealthy, loses a necklace that was not hers. She does not tell the person that gave it to her and
this causes a lot of problems, including her having to get the money back. Mathilde ends up buying a
real diamond necklace not knowing that the necklace that she lost was only paste. Through these trials
of loss and stress, the author shows the real character of Mathilde. Authors use these trials to develop
the character. How doe Guy de Maupassant do it? He develops the character of Mathilde by showing
her comments, feelings, and general attitude for things.
Whenever the author shows Mathilde s comments, it develops her character. In the story it says And
that because of you when she is talking to Madame Forestier. The story also says What am I to do with
that? This evidence shows that Mathilde s character blames her troubles on other people and that she

Exploring the Concept of Satire in A Modest Proposal by...
A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, and Top of the Food Chain by T. Coraghessan Boyle, both are
short stories that explore the concept of satire. Satire can be defined as a kind of writing that ridicules
human weakness, vice, of folly in order to bring about social reform. It is a kind of writing to bring
about change to society. Even though both are short stories, they easily get the faults of society across
to its readers. In A Modest Proposal, Swift is offering an outrageous solution to the problems of
human misery. He proposes that people should start eating babies, and using them for everything that
they are worth on a daily basis. Swift creates a pamphlet and states six reasons as to why this is a
brilliant idea. He states that money wouldn t be wasted on food, the number of Catholics would be
reduced, it would be great inducement to marriages, there would be more food so the economy would
increase, poor tenants would have money for their landlords, and it would be an improvement for the
tavern business. Swift wants everyone to know how badly the Irish people are being treated by the
English. He wants to change the reader s point of view through this sarcastic satirical pamphlet. The
authors purpose of A Modest Proposal, is to try to change society. Swift is trying to reform the British
official s involvement in Ireland. People are dying, and nothing is being done about it. He is trying to
shock readers with a twisted story, but also bring about change

Literary Quotations from The Green Mile
Q1: The wide corridor up the center of E Block was floored with linoleum the color of tired old limes,
and so what was called the Last Mile at other prisons was called the Green Mile at Cold Mountain
(King 6).
This quote shows its significance in defining the setting of The Green Mile. The setting of The Green
Mile is a prison called Cold Mountain but more specifically it is located on death row. Furthermore,
the time frame that the novel takes place is The Great Depression. This is perfect for the theme of
confinement and solitude in The Green Mile because the prison keeps the inmates confined inside the
jail. This relates to the Shakespeare play Hamlet because Hamlet feels trapped in Denmark and he ...

In The Green Mile the central theme is the supernatural because it is expressed through the main
character John Coffey. The first instance of the supernatural is when John Coffey heals Paul
Edgecombe s urinary infection. Hence, John Coffey has supernatural powers to in his ways of healing
the sick and dying. These supernatural powers are the driving factor in the plot of the story as well. It
helps drive the idea that John Coffey is innocent and he was falsely accused for the crimes. Lastly, the
theme of the supernatural furthers the plot of the novel because the supernatural helps the
understanding of John s innocence. Which is essential to the plot because the entire story revolves
around the divinity of John Coffey. This relates to Hamlet because King Hamlet was killed in the
beginning of the story and was resurrected as a ghost. Also, King Hamlet advances the plot by
convincing Hamlet to kill Claudius. Hence, King Hamlet is a perfect example of the supernatural and
how it is used to further the plot because of his ghostly presence and his will for revenge. Therefore,
the structure of the plot is perfect in conveying the theme of the supernatural in The Green

The Boy s Head Snapped

The boy s head snapped to look at the man. The kidnapper had to admit, the boy looked hilarious. His

scoop of his meal and his eyes were wide. The entire look was a perfect mixture of a deer in

me to grab you something to drink, my boy?
Hurriedly, the boy nodded and with a mouth full of food, Hesh pleshe!
The smile never left the man s face as he got up from his seat to grab some juice for the little boy.
Vince had a perfect view of the fridge, and watched as the man got up. He slowly chewed on his food,
mostly because there was just so much in his mouth he couldn t. Finally he was able to swallow right
as the man opened the fridge. Almost instantly the boy wanted to upchuck his breakfast. A head, with
eyes cut out and hair shaved off, sat perched on the fridge s top counter. With or without eyes, it didn t

McCreeps turned back around, juice carton in hand. Upon seeing the boy s terrified face, he turned

Whatever is begotten, born, and dies. This shows that everything alive on this earth has an expiration
date and will eventually die. The next stanza talks about An aged man is but a paltry thing. The
character that the speaker is referring to is soon about to die. He is looking for a meaning in life and
how to leave his mark on the world.
Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make

The last stanza shows how the speaker will die and his physical body will be gone, but art will stay

s attitude toward his country reflect the struggles and ideals of the Harlem Renaissance?
In McKay s America, the speaker goes back and forth between positive and negative feelings for
America. At this time there were many racial norms occurring, especially in the south. Black people
were being discriminated and treated unfairly. The speaker states Although she feeds me bread of

The Effects Of Psychedelics
In the 1950s and 60s research into the potential of psychedelic drugs to treat illnesses began but was
unfortunately stopped in the 70s due to legal opposition from governments and regulatory bodies. It
has only been in very recent years that laws and attitudes regarding psychedelics have changed enough
to allow for research to resume. During this time, evidence has been found to suggest that there is an
unlocked potential of psychedelics to lower rates of mental illness in many sufferers; treating
depression, PTSD, OCD and several anxiety disorders. Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), psilocybin and
mescaline are all naturally occurring psychedelics that act on the human serotonin system and have
been found to significantly reduce rates of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In humans, DMT is thought to be produced by the lungs (Mandel et al., 1972) and by the pineal gland
(Cozzi et al., 2011), where it also acts to influence mood, perception and thought. DMT is synthesized
from the enzymatic conversion of L tryptophan, which is produced endogenously in plants and is an
essential amino acid in animals, to tryptamine, which is then converted to N methyltryptamine, the
final precursor for N,N Dimethyltryptamine (Axelrod, 1961). DMT non selectively binds to 5 HT
serotonin receptors acting as an agonist or antagonist predominantly in the prefrontal cortex
(Strassman, 1996), an area of the brain responsible for mood and emotional processing (Yang and
Raine, 2009). As previously mentioned, it s been observed that depressed patients have reduced
activity in the prefrontal cortex (Gibb, 2012), so activating this area as well as bringing further release
of serotonin is what s thought to treat the depression and increase connections between emotions,
actions and thoughts. The psychological benefits gained from this can be profound for some
individuals as DMT often promotes the development of personal insights and self knowledge. DMT
can be taken externally via inhalation, injection or oral ingestion in which it is more commonly known
as ayahuasca, a traditional brew used by many cultures throughout history in cultural and spiritual
practices (Osório et al., 2015). With regular consumption

Batman And Mr Freeze Fortune Review
Batman and Mr Freeze Fortune Review
Online slot developers have drawn from an endless source of pop culture references and intellectual
properties, all in the effort to bring you a casino experience featuring characters and settings you know
and love. This brand new release proudly draws from the 1960s TV show featuring Batman and Mr
Freeze, while cautiously avoiding any reference to the Schumacher film that hardly did the characters
justice.
The number of slots games featuring comic book characters has increased quite considerably over the
past several years, with Batman and Mr Freeze Fortune looking to get in the hunt. Question is, will
this Ash Gaming release live up to hype? Tuck into our review below to find out!
Like a 1960s crime fighting caper
Developed by up and coming industry name Ash Gaming, Batman and Mr Freeze Fortune draws
inspiration from its earlier titles. That being said, while still offering several of its own unique
features, this game manages to pay sufficient homage to its source material. Batman and Mr Freeze
Fortune game draws mostly from the campy 1960s movie featuring Adam West. As can be expected it
is lovingly cheesy and self referential all throughout.
Plenty of homages and references to the show can be seen, and older fans of the series will be
delighted by the nostalgic throwback this game represents. Overall, while hammy, the design of
Batman and Mr Freeze Fortune has a certain nostalgic appeal.

Nurse Ratched Quotes
Oral Script
1. Character
Name
There are quite a few interpretations of Nurse Ratched s name that could be made, all of which
suggest she is an evil, oppressive character.
The first is the nickname rat shed given to her by McMurphy. The association of rats with disease
suggests that the nurse infects the orderlies and other nurses with her desire for order and control. Rats
also carry the connotation that she is a despicable and corrupting character.
The interpretation of her name sounding like Ratchet ties into the mechanical imagery associated with
her, and shows that she is a part of the combine, and could also suggest that she ratchets patients into
conformity. Her name sounding like the word wretched further suggests that she is ... Show more

This description is rather dehumanising, and makes her sound like a factory produced machine, rather
than a person. This firmly associates her with the Combine, and makes the reader think of her in terms
of the Combine, rather than as a person in her own right.
Size
Throughout the novel, Nurse Ratched is referred to as the Big Nurse , and this represents her authority
and control over the other patients. Compounding this is the references to the smallness of the other
characters, most notably the Chief, who physically is by far the largest character in the novel. It is the
Chief s increase in size relative to the nurse which gave him the confidence to secede from the nurse s
control and make his own escape from the hospital.
2. Society
Nurse Ratched is representative of society itself, or more specifically the oppressive and repressive
influence of rules and regulations in society. The Combine that the Chief talks about throughout the
novel is essentially this repressive influence, and the Nurse is basically a physical manifestation of the
symbolic

Payroll Process: During an initial review of data for Jacket X from last year, several potential threats

containing threats and vulnerabilities requiring immediate attention from management in order to
prevent a data breach. Recall threats and vulnerabilities, although often utilized together in discussing
cybersecurity risks, are two separate concepts. To review, a threat is defined as an undesirable event

This would allow supervisors to create a bogus employee, place them on the payroll master file, edit
their hours, and supply their own banking information for direct deposit purposes. As this would
initially cause a relatively small loss to Jacket X, it may not be noticed for a while. In order to mitigate
this vulnerability, supervisors should only have access to their own employees and any changes should
create an audit trail. Also, for independent contractors, the payroll specialists have permission to alter
payroll details during validation. Although these permissions allow for more productivity time by
creating less personnel in the validation chain, it is counterproductive as it creates a vulnerability
wherein the validator is not independent and free to edit contractors time and attendance. Additionally,
this vulnerability can be exploited during the paycheck generation process wherein falsified checks
can be created for the bogus contractors. In order to overcome this vulnerability, Jacket X should
separate the payroll specialists and validators in order to create a more secure validation process.
Additionally, there is a major flaw with the direct deposit system in that it does not communicate with
the paycheck generation process. This can cause paper checks to be issued to those employees who
already receive direct deposit. Linking these two

Summary Of Goodfellas And The Silence Of The Lambs
Cinematography has the potential to be so much more than just a means to tell a story. When applied
correctly, cinematography has the capability of being like a work of art hanging in a museum.
Cinematography is also able to give a depth and feeling to a film that would otherwise not be possible.
While all movies must use a camera to merely exist, few professionals have mastered the skill and
artistry that cinematography can become. Two cinematographers that I feel use the camera as a paint
brush and their subjects has a canvas are Michael Ballhaus, known for his work in Martin Scorsese s
Goodfellas, and Tak Fujimoto, known for his work in The Silence of the Lambs. Both
cinematographers utilize the power of various levels of close ups, medium and long shots, various
camera angles, jib and tracking movements, pan and tilt, and focus just to name a few. While both
films feature killers, the overall plots are fairly different. Yet, through the masterful use of the camera,
both Ballhaus and Fujimoto are able to keep the viewer full engaged and excited to see what is to
come.
As previously mentioned, both Goodfellas and The Silence of the Lambs feature a killer and/or killers
as the main subjects. Martin Scorsese s Goodfellas is the story of Irish Italian American, Henry Hill,
and how he lives day to day life as a member of the Mafia. Based on a true story, the plot revolves
around Henry and his two unstable friends Jimmy and Tommy as they gradually climb the ladder from

The Need for Groundwater Extraction Regulation
Groundwater is used primarily for irrigating farmland; and secondarily, for consumption and industrial
use. Aquifers, unconsolidated subterranean layers which hold water, are rapidly dwindling, and
groundwater depletion is quickly growing to become a major problem for farmers and the public at
large. Reserves close to ground level are rapidly drying up and due to technological roadblocks,
extracting water from deeper reserves is not yet financially feasible. The problem is especially severe
in California, which represents around 20% of all groundwater withdrawal in the United States
(Famiglietti, LA Times). A lack of water for agriculture would directly lead to diminished food
production and indirectly lead to requiring food imports from outside the state. Groundwater resources
are an unregulated public resource and despite any innovative breakthrough in extraction techniques,
the only sustainable, long term solution is to enforce limits on extraction. Regulation of how much
groundwater can be extracted from an aquifer in a set period of time; along with incentives to obtain
water from alternative sources is the ideal solution to address the perennially growing challenge of
groundwater depletion in California.
This regulatory effort must begin in politics but it needs to spread to society as well only when people
realize the consequences of over extraction will they even consider ceasing doing so. This solution is
not based primarily in science and technology, and is

Montmorillon Research Paper
TITLE
Uncovering the Origins of the French Macaron
LEAD PARAGRAPH
Deep in the heart of central France, picturesque villages lie on the banks of the rivers, castle like
turrets hold up bridges and medieval churches peek out over forests of green. It could be a great
setting for a historical romance or the pastoral setting of a Monet painting. But the small town of
Montmorillon has yet another claim to fame. Consumed by French royalty and later fawned upon by
gourmands world wide, the intensely flavored almond pastry known as the macaron was born here.
One of France s most unique museums, Musee du Macaron, invites curious culinary aficionados to
discover these delightful sweet treats in a whole new way.

Getting to Montmorillon
Home to just under 7000 people, the town of Montmorillon is located in central western France, just
under an hour from Poitiers, the region s capital. From Paris, take a train to Chateauroux and make the
drive from there, or take the nearly four hour scenic car route from the nation s capital, cutting through
the lush Brenne Park, full of natural wildflowers and small lakes. An overnight stop in one of the tiny
villages or communes, as they are locally known, provides an opportunity to stay at ancient castles,
admire long disused churches or splash and frolic in one of the many small lakes along the way. ...

After the museum outlines the techniques employed for each type of macaron, visitors are led to a tea
room where a platter of choice macarons and other sweets awaits. The entire experience, at euro 3.30,
is hard to beat. In the patisserie, the fifth generation of Montmorillon s Rannou Metivier macaron
makers churn out perfectly proportioned pastries and chocolates to take for the road, or just for the
townspeople to enjoy. Your sweet tooth never had it so

How Did The Second Sino-Japanese War Affect The Growth Of...
Sometimes known as the beginning of World War II, the Second Sino Japanese War is regarded as a
significant event in the growth of Japan before World War II. Millions died, both Chinese and
Japanese, civilians and soldiers alike. The Chinese nationalist and communist governments adjoined
for the time and fought off the Japanese, and many Japanese Chinese affairs occurred. Japan
eventually surrendered the land to the Chinese, and no payoff was made. The Second Sino Japanese
War was an overall fruitless and unjustified attempt at land gain by the Japanese Empire. The Second
Sino Japanese War was destined to come after the First Sino Japanese War. Japan was launching small
scale attacks on Manchurian railways and left the League of Nations. ... Show more content on

Japan is a fairly large country, ranking high on the list of biggest to smallest list of all countries in the
world. The Japanese had also already seized Korea in the First Sino Japanese War, increasing Japanese
territory. The Japanese conquest for land led them to also sign the Tripartite Pact, deciding to split land
they conquered. The Japanese kept trying for more land, but eventually, even the the land they had
gained, was lost. As a result of Japan s land obsession, the Nanjing Massacre occurred. The Nanjing
Massacre was when Japanese soldiers killed many Chinese people is Nanjing. Many people died in
this, but over twenty million died in total. The Chinese suffered higher casualties, as they were
unprepared for the attack. The attack did not result in much for Japan, so it was unnecessary to even
happen. The second United Front, a combination of KMT and CCP, stayed together for most of World
War II. At the end, they began to fight again. Eventually, they broke out and fought against each other.
This resulted in a war between the nationalists and communists, leading to the split of two
governments. Taiwan was taken over by the nationalists. The war is still disputed over

Anasazi Tribe
The Anasazi The Anasazi people inhabited an area called the Four Corners of Southwest America. The
Four Corners area consisted of northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, southeastern Utah
and southwestern Colorado. The Anasazi people are the ancient ancestors of the modern Pueblo people
that still inhabit Southwest America. The Anasazi people are believed to have first emerged around
1200 BC however it appears that they had completely abandoned this area by 1300 AD. Many theories
surrounding the mystery of these people have emerged over the years but no conclusion has been
agreed upon. The fear that developed within the Anasazi civilization may have divided the society into
diverse segments that waged war upon each other until only the most aggressive parts of the culture
survived to move on. The Anasazi people began as hunters and gatherers. They eventually began to
settle into more permanent structures and began growing their own food. They primarily grew corn
and squash and they built storage bins to store their excess food. The early settlements were homes
built underground and lined with rocks. The homes were covered with beamed and thatch roofs. As
the culture evolved they began to build more elaborate houses both underground and above ... Show

While the reason for the move is unknown; It is believed by some that the intricate structures were
built to protect the people from hostile nomads. The structures are built high into the cliff sides and
there is speculation as to how the Anasazi could build them and access them. Some of these dwellings
had hundreds of rooms and multiple towers. The towers are placed strategically to see the plains
beneath them leading researchers to believe that they were built for protection. The structures and
artifacts discovered within them show signs of a developing culture and an organized system of

Achieved Statuses In Sports
Buzz! Buzz! Buzz! I roll over and shut off my alarm. My body aches from the lack of sleep and
yesterday s workout. I threw on my gym clothes and headed out the door. There was work to be done.
Almost everyone belongs to some particular group and claims an achieved status. An achieved status
is a status that is earned or chose. One of my achieved statuses is baseball. Being on the baseball team,
or any club in that matter, requires a big time commitment and a lot is expected. My role or what is
expected of me is weights, and keeping the required skills for baseball throughout the Fall and Winter
are required. When the season rolls around, my coach expects that I make the routine plays and hit the
ball hard the entire length of the season. My role performance or the things I actually do for this role
are both strength and baseball workouts to keep in shape during the off season. I do my best to hit the
ball and make the routine plays but baseball is a game of failure and things do not always work out. I
have also experienced role conflict in baseball. Role conflict is when a person is supposed to play two
incompatible roles. Our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An ascribed status is a status that is already given or one that is already had. One of my ascribed
statuses is being a brother. I had no control over spending my life with my sister Raigan. It was
between my parents and God. Being a brother comes with great responsibility. I am expected to keep
her safe and away from boys. Also, I have to be there for her when she needs to talk and it is too
private and girly for my parents ears. I perform my role by having long talks with her when she needs
them and I do not get my parents involved. Also, being in high school, stuff spreads like a wildfire and
eventually everyone finds out. My sister is getting more involved with dating and boys and I have to

Inequality in To Kill a Mockingbird
One of the major themes of To Kill a Mockingbird is the divisions in human society and how those
cause inquality among people. Even though most people know that they shouldn t judge others, it s
human nature, and because of this, it causes different sections of society. Most of the characters
experience this throughout the novel. In To Kill a Mockingbird, certain divisions in society cause
inequality in the town of Maycomb, and the characters and the reader both learn important lessons.
When unequal divides in society form, the person or group of people that are looked down upon don t
get the respect that they should. In Maycomb, anyone different from the traditional southern ways gets
the short end of the stick. Race is an obvious division in the society of Maycomb. White people are
automatically thought of as good people, while African Americans do not get accepted. The people of
Maycomb seem to think that there s something not right about black people, just because that s not
traditional in the south. Tradition states that white people are better than black people without a
question, and we can see through name calling and the unfair trail that many people in Maycomb still
hold on to this tradition. They don t even think that African Americans deserve to associate with
whites hardly at all. Examples of characters experiencing this divide are Atticus and Tom. Atticus gets
looked down upon by a lot of people in the town simply because he wanted to defend Tom, who was

Citizen Kane Symbolism
largest building built for himself since the pyramids, which contained statues parallel to six museums.
When we see all the greatest signs of the construction and architectural antiques you will assert that
there is a great legend who certainly had impacted on his society. Some questions are back and forth in
my imagination about how the life of a citizen Kane was transformed from turbulence into dominion
and strength. Sometimes an early sign might give some signals to a change that may occur in the near
future and one of the signs that happened when Kane was a child lives with his mother but suddenly
for a reason his life starts to change when he left his mother and became one of the political symbols
of his state. In addition, the life of Kane has passed into family problems after he became the
important person in his state and has strong relationships with others. That begun when he got married
twice as well as divorced twice. I think these signifiers in Kane s life signified to the stability in the
life of the inspirational individuals such as Kane. He marries the niece of the president of the United
States (Emily) and they had lived beautiful years together until a singer woman (Susan) encounters
Kane on the street in a rainy night while Kane was dirty. From here, she invites him to her house after
she offered help with her knowledge that is Kane the famous politician. Moreover, few days later
Kane and his first wife separate after she knows that Kane has a new relationship with the singer. As a
result, Kane falls in love with the singer and get married then they lived a pretty life for a long time. I
have seen multi signs occur through the movie, but the marriage period changes lots in Kane s life
especially after he separates from the second wife. The legendary scenes are too many in the film.
Perhaps the most prominent is the scene of the famous Kane speech. The scene portrays the very large
audience and the great prestige that Kane occupies among his people. He owned everything that
people run for such as money and fame, but there is a big secret still behind his character has not been
revealed. Ultimately, at the end of Kane s life, on the bed of death, he held a glass ball in his hand and

Comparing The Jungle And How The Other Half Lives
Society has led us to believe that what doesn t kill you actually makes you stronger. That there is no
gain without pain. That a man s blood, sweat, and tears will be all worth the struggle. The Roman poet
Horace even once said that adversity can bring out talents which in a successful environment, would
not exist. With all these assurances that difficult circumstances will meritable, it is hard to picture
Horace s statement being challenged. However, in the books, The Jungle, and How the Other Half
Lives, adversity clearly never led to any such benefits or talents being drawn out as Horace
mentioned. For example, within, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, Jurgis, a Lithuanian immigrant, came
to America with his family for the American Dream. Eventually, they fall into fiscal trouble, and
Jurgis old father, Antennas, is forced to perform grueling work until he dies from it. Additionally,
Jurgis struggles to pay for his high interest house, and instead of eliciting a talent, Jurgis elicits harsh
resentment for his family. How the Other Half Lives, by Jacob Riis, also described many of the
worries the people of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only dormant thing that was unveiled was his contempt for his family. He hated having so much
to worry about and no money for himself. He calls himself a slave to marriage because he longs to be
free from responsibility. No talents or abilities came from this misfortune, and the family is never able
to pay off the house. One by one, most of his loved ones die because Jurgis is no longer strong enough
to support them. If Horace was right, Jurgis would have found a sleeping skill within himself to save
the day and help everyone, but that just is not how reality works. Hard times do not mean that one will
come out a more skillful person. Horace s words really let Jurgis

  • 2. Essay On Pcr And Gel Electrophoresis DNA is commonly used in the modern legal system to release the innocent or imprison the guilty. There are two different ways to create DNA evidence through science technology, PCR and gel electrophoresis. Polymerase Chain Reaction, PCR, is used to create thousands to millions of copies of DNA, out of a small piece of DNA, this piece is used to make a DNA profile. Doing this makes it easier to test the DNA. PCR is used to find if a gene has pathogens. They are an infectious agent that creates illness or disease and it s commonly a virus, parasite or bacteria. (1) Gel electrophoresis is the technique used to separate molecules from DNA, RNA or proteins, based on the size or electric charge. It can be used in DNA fingerprinting, the findings and purification of nucleic acids and proteins. Gel electrophoresis can be used to find pathogens that can be found in blood, tissues or sources like food. (2) These are some of the methods that are used in court and police cases to discover DNA. The process of PCR has 3 steps that repeat in cycles shown in image 1. The first one is the separation of the two strands of the DNA molecule. This happens by the initial material being heated to 95 °C. Every DNA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Smoke Signals Essay The movie Smoke Signals is based on the series of short stories written by Sherman Alexie. Just like any movie, there is a meaning to it. Before this movie, when I thought of the phrase Native American I thought of things like feathers and societies that were impeccable. But after watching the movie, Smoke Signals, it portrays what being a Native American really means. It is not all fun and games. The protagonist, Victor Joseph, has many hard aspects of his life, but throughout it all he grows mentally. His personality in the beginning of the movie is mean and despicable, he is filled with wrath, but as the movie goes on his personality grows gradually. By the ending of the movie, he was a nicer and kinder. When the movie begins, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Victor has to go to Phoenix to get Arnolds ashes. Thomas offers money to help him get there, but there is one catch, Thomas has to go with him. Victor automatically says no, but after a little while he accepts the offer, having a little change of heart. From here on, Victor s personality changes slowly but surely. As they are on their way to get his father s ashes, two cowboys sit in their seats, but they won t let them have their seats back, because the boys are Native Americans. This only makes Victor mad, and Thomas confused. When they get to Phoenix, they meet Suzy Song, who is the woman who lived next to Arnold. She tells Victor about how much Arnold talked about him, and how much he wished he could see him. She also told him about how the fire on July 4th was accidently caused by Arnold, because he was drinking. All these years Victor thought his father didn t want him anymore, but he just didn t want to hurt his son anymore. After the boys got the ashes, and anything else that Victor wanted from his father s trailer, they left without telling Suzy goodbye. Victor was still in denial about his father passing away, and everything that Suzy had told him. He yelled at Thomas telling him he didn t care about him or anything basically. Victor was driving and almost ran into a car parked on the side of the road, and went off the road. When they got out of the truck, it was a car accident caused by a drunk driver. ... Way too many studies have shown that almost everyday in the United States more than eleven people will die and 1,160 get injured. Lourdes believed leaving her children and finding work in the United States would give her children their best future. Lourdes left Belky in the care of her sister and left Enrique in the care of his father. Lourdes made it to the United States by paying a smuggler to take her to Miami, but she was abandoned in Los Angeles and forced to find work there. • 7. No Prayer in Public Schools Essay No Prayer in Public Schools Chapter three of Civil Liberties: Opposing Viewpoints inspired me to research today s issues of school prayer. To understand how we got to where we are today, I first delved into our countries history of court cases pertaining to rulings on prayer in schools. Lastly, to update my audience on how our lives are being affected today, I directed my efforts toward finding current situations. By analyzing these situations, I gained knowledge for a better understanding of why society needs to be aware of these controversies. I don t think there should be any form of organized prayer in today s public schools. Praying in school was first addressed in the Supreme Court in 1962 in the Engle v. Vitale case. The ... Jaffree case, the court struck down Alabama s moment of silence law by banning observance of daily moments of silence from public schools when students were encouraged to pray during the silent periods. When we move to current issues, we find children like Emily Lesk, a Virginia student, who stands in the hallway for one minute every morning because she does not agree with the moment of silence her school holds (Lesk). I feel that many children are faced with difficult decisions, affecting their self esteem. Some parents put pressure on their kids to get up and walk out, just like Emily does. However, this draws attention to them and provides an opportunity for their peers to unfairly judge them. On the other hand, if they remain in class, they will be disobeying their parents. A wall of separation has long been established and it is understood that two basic institutions of society can influence one another, yet neither will dominate the other. The issue of teaching religion in school can be judged by this principal. A strong point addressed, which I agree with, states that teaching morals and values is different than teaching religion. Prayer in school has been an issue for many years, and there is not one solution that everyone will agree on. This issue will hit close to home in a short number of years when I start my own family. • 9. Theodore Roosevelt Corollary Analysis The United States has a very long history of military actions that helped expand its power in both peacetime and war to a much higher status. After independence, the United States took military control of the North American continent, acquiring territory from the native peoples, and from other countries such as Britain, France, Mexico, and more countries. Not only seizing territory but also offering help to any allies who needed it. The Roosevelt Corollary written by Theodore Roosevelt in 1904, is a great example of how the expansion of American influence has spread throughout North and Latin America, and also Asia. In the corollary, it basically says that if a nation cannot help keep up with its standard, as well as having chronic wrongdoing, the intervention of the United States will have to occur. Mainly this document is speaking to Latin America and the Caribbean /Central America. In the last few decades of the19th century, it was a period of imperial spreading for the United States. • 10. Concept Of Absolute Purchasing Power Parity Introduction and significance of the research question Does the concept absolute purchasing power parity (PPP) stay true that the goods in one country should cost the same in another country after implying the exchange rates? (For example, the pound cost of imported goods should be the same as the price of the same goods being sold in the UK). Absolute purchasing power parity is a concept with the assumption of goods having the same price after exchange rates between countries. However, I want to find out if this is always true or not since it plays an important role that differentiates from the relative purchasing power parity . There is an assumption that if there are any deviations in the price in one of the two countries, then the exchange rate and the relative prices should adjust to accommodate, equating to the level where the basket of goods have the same price in these two countries (Moffatt, 2014). The data and methodology I will be comparing exchange rates between two countries, these are the UK (£) and the USA ($) to see if the changes are enough to make any differences or whether just negligible. I will select data from the year 1980 to 2015 in yearly intervals. Comparing each year with the previous year. These will be compared using Excel and Minitab and displayed as a simple linear regression model. The absolute PPP should mean that ERt = ERt 1 + u. • 11. Nobody Owens In The Graveyard Book By Neil Gaiman Life is such a diverse and mysterious topic, is it a journey? What is its purpose? How does the science behind it work? Well, in the book The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman illustrates this beautifully, showing how the protagonist, Nobody Owens is a dynamic character and changes throughout the story. One way Bod changes is how he realizes that life is the journey between being born and death, and he wants to live life to its full extent. Before, he only thought that life was a bland passage into death and the afterlife, his world. But after some time, Bod matures and when he is getting ready to leave the graveyard, he says to Silas what he wants to do: I want to see life. I want to hold it in my hands. • 12. Realism and Romanticism within The Red Badge of Courage Realism and Romanticism Within The Red Badge of Courage The Red Badge of Courage, written by Stephan Crane in 1895 gives a detailed, yet, fictional account of Henry Fleming, a farm boy who joins the Union Army in the American Civil War. Before Henry is battle tested, he ponders his courage and questions whether he will be able to fight the urge to flee from battle. Henry does indeed end up deserting his comrades however he ultimately overcomes his guilt and becomes one of the best fighters in his regiment. In order to depict a realistic and relatable war scene, Crane includes Henry s realistic thought process and emotion in his struggles to maintain courage. The narrative simply revealed war in a manner that was divergent to all prior forms of literature in the 19th century. Previous novels predominately entailed the glorious and romantic aspects of war rather than the tedious, gritty, and gruesome details of close combat. Instead, Crane broke the barriers of literary norms in war related literature; the novel depicted a pragmatic experience of combat from the eyes of an inexperienced and frightened youth. In the Red Badge of Courage, Stephan Crane primarily uses religious and gory imagery as well as symbolism to contrast the romantic conceptions of war versus the reality of experiencing battle. One of the primary methods used to illustrate realism throughout The Red Badge of Courage would be imagery. The entire book is essentially an outpouring of impressions and ... • 13. Emphasizing The True Meaning Of Poems By Andrew Marvell... Kinsey Jordan Mrs. Russler English Honors I February 4, 2015 Emphasizing the True Meaning of Poems Around the seventeenth century the poets Andrew Marvell and John Donne expressed their feelings through poetry. Both John Donne, born in 1572 and Andrew Marvell, born in 1621 in England, are known for their ideas of metaphysical poetry. Metaphysical poetry is a persuasive poem that uses a conceit. It focuses on imagery, paradoxes, arguments, philosophy and religion. Andrew Marvell s To His Coy Mistress and John Donne s A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, focus on the theme of love, which was trending at that time. Although both poems justify the importance and essence of love, the tone differs in each poem making them distant from each other. The figurative language also makes the two poems different. However, they both focus on the idea of Carpe Diem, enjoying the moment and not worrying about the future. Through comparing these poems, the differences and similarities result in the true understanding and effectiveness of the poems. In To His Coy Mistress, Andrew Marvell does not perceive true, fervent love, but rather that time and beauty will not last. The tone of this poem is sad, but the author seems to make it happier. There is an example shown in the first stanza; Had we but world enough and time...we would sit down, and think which way to walk, and pass our long love s day. (1 4) Marvell appears to be straying from the idea of Carpe Diem; stating that if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Roman Weapons Research Paper Since ancient times, weapons, armor and maneuverability have been a continual growing dynamic in warfare. Armored units have invariably been a primary weapon of war. Beginning in prehistoric times, sleds were used to move heavy objects. Later on, in the ancient middle east, horse drawn carts were utilized to transport weapons. Chariots later evolved from those carts. The most developed horse pulled chariots were lightweight, two wheeled, chariots and armored. Most chariots riders armed themselves with archers or spear men; this concept was also used in the evolution of the modern day tank. These chariots and their operators were the beginning of the what we know as the tank today(Tucker 1 2). During the Roman period, protective armor was also developing. Siege engines, which include battering rams, siege towers, and armored catapults were usually used when efforts were made to take control of castles and/or fortified enemy positions. During the Roman Imperial and Middle ages, these tank predecessors were protected by thick wooden boards all around. In the times of knighthood, those engineering maneuvering weapons added iron and lighter weight steel. This was partly in lue of the more frequent use of the crossbow and longbow; arrows ... • 15. Those Winter Sundays Figurative Language In the poem Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden, is about a man looking back on his childhood experience, and relationship with his father. The father of this man was the type of person to do arduous labor, and be unacknowledged for it. Although the father deserved to not be acknowledged because he only went through this labor for his obligation and expectations to do so, not out of love, compassion, nor alacrity of any kind. He was an austere, anodyne, and abusive father but, his son still believes he could have been a better son by behaving more appropriately, and giving him at least a time where someone recognized and acknowledged his efforts through gratitude. The son thought that if he did so, then things between them may have been better. Through the wording, consonance, strong words, and meaning in the poem Those Winter Days exemplify the poor relationship between father and son, being bethought by his son as a man leading to his remorse that he could ve been on better terms with his father. • 16. Coming Of Age Throughout Mississippi, By Anne Moody Being born into a racially divided society, such as America during slavery and the decades after the Civil War, does not mean that you are born with the knowledge of racism. Racism is something that we are not born with and that we are raised to experience, follow, or fix. During the 19th century and all the way up till mid 20th century, racism was one of the biggest issues in America. Former slaves and anyone who had lived in America for some time, was aware of the racial tension that traveled through the heart of the nation and only got worse the more south you go. In Anne Moody s autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi, Moody s life is told through her eyes. It goes through her childhood until her participation in the Civil Rights movement. One of the major parts in the book is her slowly realizing the racial divide in America and the disadvantages that her skin color had come with. All the racism Moody experienced as a child until she was an adolescent led to her decision to become part of the Civil Rights movement. Growing up in rural Mississippi was a childhood filled with racism, segregation, and intimidation. These came with every childhood, black or white. Growing up in rural Mississippi as a black child just added more complications like disadvantages, lower quality of life, the risk of being lynched, and many more horrors. This was the reality for Anne Moody. Anne Moody was a young, black girl who grew up living with her father, mother and younger siblings. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Going Beyond Rationality In The Phaedrus By Plato Socrates is referring to going beyond human reason. In the Phaedrus, Plato says, There are two kinds of madness; one is produced by human infirmity, the other by a divine release from the ordinary ways of men. Aristotle says that plants have a nutritive soul, while animals have a sensitive soul and humans have a rational soul. Imagine a plant going beyond its nutritive soul into the realm of an animate or rational soul. For example, the Ents from Lord of The Rings, they are sensitive in that they walk and they are rational in that they talk and reason. Similarly, Plato is saying that humans in the second state of madness, divine madness, move beyond the capacity of their rational soul into the realm of the divine. Her sanity has been questioned several times by historians. While she did struggle with some emotional and mental health issues, she was not crazy. To prove this, it is important to understand her childhood and upbringing, as well as any conditions she suffered from. Next it is crucial to examine her life at the White House, especially since it was during such a tense period in American history. He also seemed to think after Mary s condition that she was happy in the asylum. During the trial itself, while there were doctors that testified against her, none of them were actually mental health specialists. In fact, none of them even attempted to diagnose her with mental disorders during the trial, which makes sense knowing that none of them were certified to do so. They all called her crazy and moved on. Nonetheless, she was declared insane and sent to an asylum called Bellevue Place, where she arrived on May 20, 1875. Unlike other patients at Bellevue, Mary continued to have a semi normal life during her stay; she was allowed to walk around freely instead of being confined to her room, which certainly would not have happened if she was crazy. • 19. The Rural Care Organizations Improvement Act Of 2015 The Rural Accountable Care Organizations Improvement Act of 2015, introduced to the United States Senate in May and now being reviewed by the Senate Finance Committee, will amend part of the Social Security Act to try and improve the way the Medicare shared savings program assigns beneficiaries by basing the assignments on services of primary care offered by providers, including Nurse Practitioners (Govtrack.us, 2015). For Nurse Practitioners specifically, this new legislation will allow nurse practitioner patients to be assigned to Medicare shared savings Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) (AANP, 2015). Currently, the Affordable Care Act establishes nurse practitioners as providers whom are eligible providers in ACOs; however, the current Medicare Shared Savings program statute prevents beneficiaries of Medicare, who are receiving primary care service from a nurse practitioner, from being assigned to Accountable Care Organizations inside the program (AANP, 2015). The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (2015) also claim the exclusion of nurse practitioners must be repealed if ACOs want to develop further as models of practice, which improve cost effectiveness, patient access and quality. • 22. Exploring the Concept of Satire in A Modest Proposal by... A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, and Top of the Food Chain by T. Coraghessan Boyle, both are short stories that explore the concept of satire. Satire can be defined as a kind of writing that ridicules human weakness, vice, of folly in order to bring about social reform. It is a kind of writing to bring about change to society. Even though both are short stories, they easily get the faults of society across to its readers. In A Modest Proposal, Swift is offering an outrageous solution to the problems of human misery. He proposes that people should start eating babies, and using them for everything that they are worth on a daily basis. Swift creates a pamphlet and states six reasons as to why this is a brilliant idea. He states that money wouldn t be wasted on food, the number of Catholics would be reduced, it would be great inducement to marriages, there would be more food so the economy would increase, poor tenants would have money for their landlords, and it would be an improvement for the tavern business. Swift wants everyone to know how badly the Irish people are being treated by the English. He wants to change the reader s point of view through this sarcastic satirical pamphlet. The authors purpose of A Modest Proposal, is to try to change society. Swift is trying to reform the British official s involvement in Ireland. People are dying, and nothing is being done about it. It has only been in very recent years that laws and attitudes regarding psychedelics have changed enough to allow for research to resume. During this time, evidence has been found to suggest that there is an unlocked potential of psychedelics to lower rates of mental illness in many sufferers; treating depression, PTSD, OCD and several anxiety disorders. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In humans, DMT is thought to be produced by the lungs (Mandel et al., 1972) and by the pineal gland (Cozzi et al., 2011), where it also acts to influence mood, perception and thought. DMT is synthesized from the enzymatic conversion of L tryptophan, which is produced endogenously in plants and is an essential amino acid in animals, to tryptamine, which is then converted to N methyltryptamine, the final precursor for N,N Dimethyltryptamine (Axelrod, 1961). DMT non selectively binds to 5 HT serotonin receptors acting as an agonist or antagonist predominantly in the prefrontal cortex (Strassman, 1996), an area of the brain responsible for mood and emotional processing (Yang and Raine, 2009). As previously mentioned, it s been observed that depressed patients have reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex (Gibb, 2012), so activating this area as well as bringing further release of serotonin is what s thought to treat the depression and increase connections between emotions, actions and thoughts. The psychological benefits gained from this can be profound for some individuals as DMT often promotes the development of personal insights and self knowledge. When applied correctly, cinematography has the capability of being like a work of art hanging in a museum. Cinematography is also able to give a depth and feeling to a film that would otherwise not be possible. While all movies must use a camera to merely exist, few professionals have mastered the skill and artistry that cinematography can become. Two cinematographers that I feel use the camera as a paint brush and their subjects has a canvas are Michael Ballhaus, known for his work in Martin Scorsese s Goodfellas, and Tak Fujimoto, known for his work in The Silence of the Lambs. Aquifers, unconsolidated subterranean layers which hold water, are rapidly dwindling, and groundwater depletion is quickly growing to become a major problem for farmers and the public at large. Reserves close to ground level are rapidly drying up and due to technological roadblocks, extracting water from deeper reserves is not yet financially feasible. The problem is especially severe in California, which represents around 20% of all groundwater withdrawal in the United States (Famiglietti, LA Times). A lack of water for agriculture would directly lead to diminished food production and indirectly lead to requiring food imports from outside the state. Groundwater resources are an unregulated public resource and despite any innovative breakthrough in extraction techniques, the only sustainable, long term solution is to enforce limits on extraction. Regulation of how much groundwater can be extracted from an aquifer in a set period of time; along with incentives to obtain water from alternative sources is the ideal solution to address the perennially growing challenge of groundwater depletion in California. This regulatory effort must begin in politics but it needs to spread to society as well only when people realize the consequences of over extraction will they even consider ceasing doing so. • 45. Inequality in To Kill a Mockingbird One of the major themes of To Kill a Mockingbird is the divisions in human society and how those cause inquality among people. Even though most people know that they shouldn t judge others, it s human nature, and because of this, it causes different sections of society. Most of the characters experience this throughout the novel. In To Kill a Mockingbird, certain divisions in society cause inequality in the town of Maycomb, and the characters and the reader both learn important lessons. When unequal divides in society form, the person or group of people that are looked down upon don t get the respect that they should. In Maycomb, anyone different from the traditional southern ways gets the short end of the stick. Race is an obvious division in the society of Maycomb. White people are automatically thought of as good people, while African Americans do not get accepted. The people of Maycomb seem to think that there s something not right about black people, just because that s not traditional in the south. Tradition states that white people are better than black people without a question, and we can see through name calling and the unfair trail that many people in Maycomb still hold on to this tradition. They don t even think that African Americans deserve to associate with whites hardly at all. Examples of characters experiencing this divide are Atticus and Tom. Atticus gets looked down upon by a lot of people in the town simply because he wanted to defend Tom, who was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Citizen Kane Symbolism largest building built for himself since the pyramids, which contained statues parallel to six museums. When we see all the greatest signs of the construction and architectural antiques you will assert that there is a great legend who certainly had impacted on his society. Some questions are back and forth in my imagination about how the life of a citizen Kane was transformed from turbulence into dominion and strength. Sometimes an early sign might give some signals to a change that may occur in the near future and one of the signs that happened when Kane was a child lives with his mother but suddenly for a reason his life starts to change when he left his mother and became one of the political symbols of his state. In addition, the life of Kane has passed into family problems after he became the important person in his state and has strong relationships with others. That begun when he got married twice as well as divorced twice. I think these signifiers in Kane s life signified to the stability in the life of the inspirational individuals such as Kane. He marries the niece of the president of the United States (Emily) and they had lived beautiful years together until a singer woman (Susan) encounters Kane on the street in a rainy night while Kane was dirty. From here, she invites him to her house after she offered help with her knowledge that is Kane the famous politician. Moreover, few days later Kane and his first wife separate after she knows that Kane has a new relationship with the singer. As a result, Kane falls in love with the singer and get married then they lived a pretty life for a long time. I have seen multi signs occur through the movie, but the marriage period changes lots in Kane s life especially after he separates from the second wife. The legendary scenes are too many in the film. Perhaps the most prominent is the scene of the famous Kane speech. The scene portrays the very large audience and the great prestige that Kane occupies among his people. He owned everything that people run for such as money and fame, but there is a big secret still behind his character has not been revealed. Ultimately, at the end of Kane s life, on the bed of death, he held a glass ball in his hand and he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That a man s blood, sweat, and tears will be all worth the struggle. The Roman poet Horace even once said that adversity can bring out talents which in a successful environment, would not exist. With all these assurances that difficult circumstances will meritable, it is hard to picture Horace s statement being challenged. However, in the books, The Jungle, and How the Other Half Lives, adversity clearly never led to any such benefits or talents being drawn out as Horace mentioned. For example, within, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, Jurgis, a Lithuanian immigrant, came to America with his family for the American Dream. Eventually, they fall into fiscal trouble, and Jurgis old father, Antennas, is forced to perform grueling work until he dies from it. Additionally, Jurgis struggles to pay for his high interest house, and instead of eliciting a talent, Jurgis elicits harsh resentment for his family.
