Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger Essay
H.G. Bissinger's Friday Night Lights brings to mind the cold, autumn nights of 1988 where a town,
just like any other rural town in America, was brought together in such a raw and emotional way.
From the rise and fall of Boobie Miles to the push for the playoffs, it is clear that 1988 Odessa was
swept up in the glory of football to replace the grandeur of the 1950s, which seemed to deteriorate
throughout that hectic decade. While a modern reader may view Bissinger's masterpiece as a tale
from a dated and faraway place, several factors have kept it in the public's eye. What is it about
Friday Night Lights that still resonates today? The answer can still be found in the same rural towns
of America. Though it may seem incredible, Texas is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the English department at Permian High School was starved of necessary learning
materials so funds could instead go towards the football program. Gerrymandering even occurred in
the school district so Permian could hold on to its precious team and receive all of the talented black
players from the poor side of town. Practices such as the ones mentioned above are by no means
extinct. In my own school district of Round Rock, Texas, similar things occurred.
Though my district prides itself on preparing students for college, football is still king. It seems as if
Round Rock requires at least one of its five 5–A schools to be good at football. In 2010, Cedar
Ridge High School was created in the Round Rock Independent School District. Strangely enough,
once Cedar Ridge opened, all high schools seemed to be concerned about their football teams. All of
the extraordinary players were primarily from the area of the city that Cedar Ridge was being built.
Rather than being proud of Round Rock for accommodating more people due to the school's
location, citizens were angered when Cedar Ridge became the new powerhouse in football. Citizens
of Round Rock not being able to put instances such as this in perspective and celebrate a new school
is a major similarity to the Odessans of 1988. A community and its culture hold a

Essay on Houstons Land Use Policy

Government 2306
Professor Andrew Teas
Houston Land Use Policy Houston is a large city with very unique qualities that most cities cannot
even begin to understand, but is this just Houstonian pride talking? No, actually one of the unique
qualities that Houston has is how we handle our land use planning. Houston is well known for not
having any zoning ordinances, which has become a well–known topic for a while now. People argue
weather our lack of zoning is chaotic, unorthodox, or independent and distinct. Another unique
quality that we have is where our political culture stands. Dr. Elazar's "Individualistic –
Traditionalistic" study of political culture talks about three categories moralistic, ... Show more

The broader picture to Houston is that it comes from the biggest state in the U.S, Texas. Texas has a
vast amount of people and within these people there are different types of mindsets but there are also
similar ones things like this are what describe are Political culture which the book, Texas Politics
12th edition, defines it as a shared system of values, beliefs and habits of behavior with regard about
politics. Dr. Elazar describes political culture as everyone being impacted by the beliefs and values
of the dominant groups in society; these groups can range in between three categories of political
culture moralistic, Individualistic, and traditionalistic. According to the book, moralistic political
culture is when citizens understand the state and the nation as commonwealths designed to further
the shared interest of everyone. In Individualistic political culture, citizens understand the state and
the nation as marketplaces in which people strive to better their personal welfare, citizen
participation is encouraged. In Traditionalistic political culture, citizens technically believe in
democracy, but emphasize respect to elite rule within a hierarchal society and citizen participation is
not encouraged. Texas stands right in between Individualistic and Traditionalistic in the scale of
political culture. Texas is a midpoint between individualistic and traditionalistic; some people think

The Formal Mission Of Collin County
The formal mission of Collin County is to deliver services including justice, public safety,
infrastructure, and public health as mandated by the State of Texas and to execute other priorities as
determined by the Commissioners Court (Collin County). The mission statement is very concise and
specific at times by mentioning the main services that are provided, such as justice, public safety,
infrastructure, and public health. Length of mission statements can be cumbersome at times to
understand because of conflicting views. Collin's mission provides insight into the purpose that the
organization is trying to fulfill and constitutes a great statement. Collin County's mission statement

stakeholders in any project within Collin County are listed below in the stakeholder interest grid.
The general public has little interest or powers within most public policies that county government's

significant power and influence in shaping public policy. The local news outlets and media have a
substantial amount of interest, but relatively little power in outcomes. School administrators, local
communities, and business leaders all have power, but little direct interest in public policy
developed by the county. Some of the entities with little interest, but significant power could,
depending on the situation have a direct interest in policies that are being implemented.

Water Problems in Texas Essay
Texas, with its abundances of natural resources, is facing a new demon, one that doesn't even seem
possible, a shortage of water. Water, without it nothing can survive. Texas is the second largest state
for landmass in the nation and ninth for water square miles. Within the borders of Texas are more
than 100 lakes, 14 major rivers, and 23 aquifers, so why has water become such an important issue
for the state? Politicians and conservationists all agree that without a new working water plan, the
state could be facing one of the most damaging environmental disasters they have ever seen. The
issues that shape the states positions are population growth, current drought conditions, and who
actually owns the water.

A study done by the Pew Hispanic Center in 2010 listed more 1.7 million undocumented residents
living in the state of Texas. (Tannahill) The population growth rate, whether by legal or illegal
means is only one of the issues that has been troubling state law makers and affecting the state's
water plan. The second issue that is affecting Texas' water is the drought conditions that the state is
currently suffering from.
Since 1990 Texas has seen a trend towards warmer and drier summers than usual. Texas which
geographically sits in the south central part of the United States with an extensive border with the
Gulf of Mexico gets its weather patterns from both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Researchers
have shown that warmer than normal temperatures in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans often lead to
drier than normal summers. The research also shows that these trends will last for more than 20 to
25 years. Since we have been in this weather pattern since 1990, (Hembreee), hopefully we are
nearing the end of the dry cycle. However, Mother Nature is never predictable. Meteorologists are
only able to speculate about a week in advanced with any certainty. The eastern Pacific Ocean
cycles between three phases, the three phases are El Nino, La Nina, and Neutral phase. La Nina is
cooling of the sea–surface temperatures and tends to bring more rain into the Gulf of Mexico and
Texas. On the opposite

Analysis Of Johnson Miller's Life
Introduction
Jane "Bitzi" Johnson Miller was born and raised on a ranch in west Texas as the only daughter of
Laura and Kennedy Johnson. She is the granddaughter of former Governor of Texas Joe Johnson
(1954–1958) well known to many as "Big Daddy". Her grandfather's conservative values had the
greatest impact on Bitzi's philosophy in delivering services and developing strong economies. She is
a lifelong member of the Republican Party, mentored by her grandfather to take leadership and
campaign roles during her formidable years. Bitzi parents as well as her grandparents instilled a love
of religion specifically the protestant religion. They were in church when doors were opened. Her

She worked many years for IBM and obtained a vast knowledge in the field of Information and
Technology. She started her career at the bottom and quickly showed her key qualities of
determination, attention to detail, and ability to stick to her guns, which rose her to top management.
In 1993, Bitzi took advantage of her education and experience to establish her own software
company in Dallas. Bitzi enjoyed the software business but after developing it for many years she
realized her heart was still in serving people. In 2014 she sold the software business to Dell for 2.5
million dollars due to her excellent negotiation skills. Bitzi married her childhood friend Beaux
Washington and began a family shortly after graduating from college. They have two daughters
(Scarlett and Kayla) who are adults and will be assisting their mother on her campaign. Bitzi
divorced Beaux shortly after selling the company and moved to San Antonio with her two daughters.
The sale of her company and move to San Antonio was in line with her desire to serve the public.
She began participating in Texas politics at the City level and participating in community
development programs.
In 2008, she joined the "Points of Light" advisory board and spearheaded the Dallas outreach to

Friday Night Lights Book Report
H.G. Bissinger tells the story of the obsessive town of Odessa, Texas in his book, Friday Night
Lights. This town has a toxic obsession with high school football and wastes away life until Friday
nights. The expectations held for the athletes of Odessa are suicidal and the preparation for life
outside of high school is almost non existent. The town of Mount Vernon, Iowa also lives for Friday
nights, however they have a healthy balance between these exciting events and ordinary life. Mount
Vernon athletes are held to reasonable standards and are thoroughly being prepared for a successful
future. The town of Odessa is an insane town with twisted ideas that only focus on winning football

people of Mount Vernon express themselves in various things such as, art and antique festivals,
weekly band concerts in the summer, and an annual town festival. Mount Vernon also has a lot to be

Texas Geography
The geography of Texas is hugely varied, from beaches to mountains. You can break Texas down
into four main regions, divided by rivers, escarpments and other natural features. Texas has all the
locations you might need: forests, cliffs, mountainous desert that could pass for Mars, NASA's
Johnson Space Center and even a coastline. The Lone Star state is often divided into four regions:
the Gulf Coastal Plains, the Interior Lowlands, also called the North Central Plains, the Great Plains
and the Basin and Range or Mountains and Basins region. Each region has unique landforms and
natural features. The first region of Texas is the Gulf Coastal Plains. The Gulf Coast stretches along
the Gulf of Mexico for hundreds of miles. Cities such as Corpus Christi, Galveston, and Houston are
in the Gulf Coast region. Near the gulf waters you can see marshes, barrier islands, estuaries, where
salty sea water and fresh river water meet, and bays. As you travel west, you can see prairies and
grasslands. The Gulf Coast is home to many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The North Central Plains region is mostly rural grasslands and small towns with a few large cities.
Most of this prairie land is thick grasses. There is also a cross timbers area full of hardwood trees.
Farming is common here because of the fertile soil. So there are many kinds of crops grown in this
region. There also commonly short prairie grass. Climate in the region/area can be extreme. In the
winters its cold, but in the summer it can be the hottest area in Texas. The average rainfall is 20 – 30
inches a year and during the spring there can be violent storms and tornadoes. Landforms in the

Friday Night Lights Movie Review Essay
The movie "Friday Night Lights" is based on a book by author H.G. Bissinger. It takes place at
Permian High School in Odessa, Texas in 1988 when tension between races was still strong in some
areas of the south. There is a focus in some areas of the film having to do with the racial tension and
ongoing conflict between the student body and the city as a whole. Even though desegregation had
happened by the time the book was written and the film was made, schools sometimes were still
racially divided. I also felt the movie showed how this football program exploited their black
athletes. Of interest to me was, the following of two of the main football players who are black.
Boobie Miles and Ivory Christian. They are as well respected as their white equivalents on the
football field but, it illustrates how attitudes change when the players walk off the field. The movie
touches on the many controversial subjects like, racism, hypocrisy, and failure where as the book is
extremely socially–oriented, and centered primarily on racial issues and educational priorities. The
film touches on these issues, but, as I wrote, it is not the focal point of the movie. It appears that
some of the scenes in the movie were actually filmed in the football stadium the Panther's played
yet, other home games looked as if they had chosen another Texas stadium to film. Football is huge
in Texas. While researching the truthfulness of the movie, I came to find that the local affiliate pre–

Summer Football Story Analysis
To any person who is from a small town in Texas, football is king. Everything is football or related
to football, and in Odessa, Texas in 1988, football reigned supreme. Football became the escape for
people's problems and the town turned to the Permian Panthers for and saw hope in a successful
football team when there was little hope to be found elsewhere. Each character in this story faces
their own unique trials and tribulations during the football season. Each one of them turned to
football as the key to solving their problems, much like everyone in their town does. Football
masked the problems in the characters homes, the financial hardship that troubled the town, and
covered up the large amounts of racism that were very prevalent at this time. The ... Show more

As summer football practice begins, readers are introduced to the notable players of the 1988
Permian Panthers; Boobie Miles, Jerrod McDougal, Mike Winchell, and Brian Chavez. We are
introduced first to James Earl "Boobie" Miles Jr., the team's all–star running back. Boobie lived a
very hard life from the start. At the age of three his mother moved to Oklahoma and left Boobie with
his grandmother. He lived for a short time with his father, but allegations of physical abuse resulted
in a lifetime of being bounced from foster home to foster home. Before Boobie started high school,
his uncle, L.V. Miles, adopted him giving him a stable home and a positive role model. Influenced
by his uncle, Boobie began to excel at sports, especially football. Football provided another "home"
where Boobie got the kind of attention and admiration that led to opportunities someone from his
background didn't typically get a full ride scholarship to college. He also gained a lot of attention for
his attitude that was that nobody was as talented as he was. In the book Boobie is constantly quoted
in the book as saying, "Put Boobie in if you wanna win" (Bissinger, Buzz). Next we are introduced

Texas : A Long History Of Conflict With The Federal...
Texas has a long history of conflict with the federal government over laws and policies, particularly
when dealing with environmental, social, and educational issues. Texas has conservative right–wing
views and has been in conflict more often with the federal government since President Obama has
been in office. The dilemma generally arises from a clash in opposing political and social views.
One major issue that has arisen in over the course of the last two years has been a battle over
funding for Planned Parenthood. Although the courts have deemed that this quarrel is not about
abortion rights or access to abortion, the truth of the matter is that it really is. Texas leaders are
against abortion and are trying to skirt federal law that allows abortion by imposing their personal
agenda opposing abortion or anything that seemingly supports abortion on the Texas people. The
problem is that in the midst of this chaos, low–income women of Texas are the ones who are
suffering through the loss of basic and preventative healthcare.
Texas, working in conjunction with the federal government, in 2005 created the Medicaid Women's
Health Program (WHP) under the senate bill 747 and house bill 2663 of the 79th Legislature,
executed and overseen by the Health and Human Services Commission (Planned Parenthood). This
program allocated funds for low–income women's healthcare for a duration of five years. The
program began on January 1, 2007. For every dollar spent by the state, the federal

southern state. This could stem from any number of things but there is one facet of Texas' history
that warrants a great deal of pride, and that is the Texas Revolution. The event breeds pride partly
because no state in the US can boast of individual sovereignty preceding statehood. Although the
rebellion occurred before Texas' annexation, without any aid from an official United States Army,
the confrontation will forever be celebrated as a quintessential piece of American history. Almost 50

Austin was born in Virginia and grew up in Missouri. When he had completed his schooling in

his posts included: board member of the territorial legislature of Missouri for 6 years, director in the

Summary: Texas Growth After Economic Adversity
The Great Recession: Texas Growth After Economic Adversity
During the great recession in 2007, many Texas citizens believed their dreams were shattered. Even
though the great recession had tainted Texas citizen's lives forever. Still, the Texas economy has
grown and is expanding. Texas has remained a top state for employment that is growing, population
has increased, and has been ranked number two for the percentage of change in personal income
growth by state.
First, due to increased employment Texas has one of the fastest and largest growing economies in
the United States. From June 2011 to June 2013, "Texas lost 433,000 jobs and gained all the lost
jobs back" (Canas and Phillips 3). During the past two years, " professional and business ... Show

Population has increase dramatically making Texas the prospect of many American citizens. Many
would argue that this is true compared to any other state. Texas looks like the prospect of the United
States as well. Texas offers many the opportunities to preview what is to come from the largest
country in the decades ahead. Texas is already one of the most independent states. When Texas
created benefits for the citizens such as, Social Security and Medicare, they were built very
insubstantial. Furthermore, some might see this as a downfall for Texas, but what many individuals
need to do is think about today and tomorrow. Every state that has Social Security or Medicare
suffered when the recession hit, which caused many to loss money, not just Texas. Furthermore,
Americans are pursuing a cheaper cost of living and a less controlled environment in which to do
business and Texas provides that. As the United States heads to Texas, without exaggeration, it's
worth understanding why. Maybe, to see the downsides ahead or to catch a peek of the opportunities
that awaits many citizens. Texas added more than 387,000 residents between July 2010, and April
2012, " that is significantly more than any other state" (Canas and Phillips 39). In the past, Texas
rates of growth have decreased vaguely. Overall, Texas ranked third in the rate of growth at "5.2
percent since the last census" (Hoskisson and Lorraine 247), However, the latest state estimates
show that most of the nation's population growth is in the Southern and Western regions of Texas,
with the Northeast and Midwest grow at far lower rates. At the present rate, "Texas will add about
23 million people from 2010 to 2020" (Hoskisson and Lorraine 249). In population growth, Texas
remains a state obviously among country and city residential areas. Population quotes for cities and

There is tremendous evidence, to suggest that individualism is a strong part of Texas culture such as,
the use of biennial sessions of the legislature, the partisan election of judges, and limited powers of
the governor. The people of Texas with individualism as their root belief do not want government to
control their lives. They want the legislature meeting every other year because Texans fear too much
time in session might lead to change. This is also the reason they have restricted the powers of
governor. Although Texans generally do not want a strong government, this does not stop them from
complaining and seeking answers when outcomes in government do not go their way.
Looking at traditionalism, they are of the belief that people should adhere to tradition and make very
few changes, especially in cultural or religious practice. "Traditionalism is a system holding that all
knowledge is derived from original divine revelation and is transmitted by tradition" (Maxwell). In a
traditional culture, economic and social elites dominate, and government is designed to serve social
elites.
Taxes are kept low to help business and economic interests, while education and welfare spending is

The Middle Pecos Groundwater Conservation District will set a hearing for the company seeking a
new water supply for Odessa as soon as this month, while a public battle over the proposal
continues.
Winning the hearing doesn't mean Republic Water Company of Texas will win approval to export
the water. Board members, for example, could dismiss the application as another version of a
request the board already denied, prompting another lawsuit. But City of Odessa and company
officials say they view it as a step closer to winning an export permit for what they describe as a
long–term and higher quality water supply even if it might end up costing more.
The district will have to hold the hearing by the end of the year after determining the application
complete.
Meanwhile, company officials say they still plan to request a hearing before an administrative law
judge instead of the district board. The judge's decision would be non–binding but could be used in a
lawsuit if the board acted against his or her findings.
"It's always been our intention because of the emotional nature of this topic in that county that
everyone would be better served if you take it out of the hands of this district and have a (State
Office of Administrative Hearings) judge view it without this lens," said Jimmy Perkins, a principal
with Republic Water Company.

Character Analysis Of Battleship Potemkin
Battleship Potemkin
The Battleship Potemkin is a film that shows the images of anguish and suffering, even though the
movie has no sound, one can understand the emotion and anguish behind the story. This film
showed how the sailors are being mistreated by the higher–ranking officers on the ship. The officers
take their anger out on the sailors in an abusive way and try to make them eat rotten food with
maggots in it. All the sailors start getting sick of the way they are being treated and decide to take a
stand, by refusing to eat the rotten food. This would induce an emotional response from the viewers,
because of the human suffering shown in the film, it can bring out feelings of anger from the
audience, as they have empathy for the sailors. The officers want to punish the sailors, by having the
ones who would not eat the soup to come forward, then they covered them with a tarp and ordered
the sailors who were not being insubordinate to shoot them. This part of the film conveyed a sense
of anxiety in the viewers as they knew this was wrong and unjust. The other sailors realized that it
was wrong to shoot their brothers and refused to shoot them, this caused a big fight among the
sailors and the officers. The sailors outnumbered the officers and threw them overboard and took
over the ship. During this scene, the viewer goes from anger and anxiety, to feelings of relief and
elation, although, it is short lived because the film goes returns to death, loss, and suffering.

Essay on The Duality of the American Dream in Amy Tan’s...
For millions of immigrants, America has been seen as the land of opportunity where anyone could
become anything he or she wanted to be. A family that believes strongly in the American dream can
be found in Amy Tan's short story, "Two Kinds." The story centers around the daughter of a Chinese
immigrant who desperately wants her daughter to become successful. In the story, the author shows
the difficult lives immigrants face when moving to a new culture. In this short story, the theme
shows the protagonist's conflict with her mother on the type of daughter her mother wants her to be.
The author establishes the theme of how difficult mother–daughter relationships can be through
characterization, setting, and symbolism. Primarily, Tan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The angry tone in the beginning leads to tension, but ends on a softer note once Jing–mei is older
and learns to be more sympathetic. The setting of the story helps the theme become more realistic.
In addition to setting, the author uses symbols to strengthen the theme of the story. In the story, the
mother buys Jing–mei a piano on which to practice. The mother and Jing–mei have different
perspectives on what this symbol means. To Jing–mei, the piano symbolizes her mother trying to
change her into something other than herself; however, the piano symbolizes the American dream to
her mother. Eventually as Jing–mei ages, she could see her mother's idea on what the piano means
and learns to appreciate the piano. When Jing–mei is a woman, "[she] realized that ["Pleading
Child" and "Perfectly Contended"] were two halves of the same song" (Tan 9). As Critic Cynthia
Becerra states, "the self–realization completes this rich vignette, it is not without pain and loss.
(Becerra)" This realization shows how she learns that her mother only has high aspirations for her.
The symbolical piano helps the theme by showing the contrasting views between the mother and the
daughter in their relationship. Furthermore, Amy Tan writes a wonderful short story about the
complicated relationship between mothers and daughters, yet one can be enriching. The theme of

Texas governors are not as powerful as some people think. Their personality and appearance matter
the most when being considered for a vote. The governor is seen the most rather the other officials,
which is why their personality and appearance is so important. Governors used to be able to serve a

Ann Richards was the second female Texas governor. Unlike Miriam Ferguson she didn't serve two

Strategic Resource Management Essay
By integrating human resources management (HRM) into the Hospital planning process and
emphasizing human resources (HR) activities that support the Hospital's mission and goals, hospital
departments are able to ensure that the management of HR contributes to mission accomplishment
and managers are held accountable for their HRM decisions.
Strategic human resources management...strategic alignment...alignment with Hospital mission
accomplishment. These are just a few of the terms being used to describe the new, evolving role of
HRM. What do these terms really mean? If you were to ask Hospital employees and managers, you
would probably get a wide range of answers. So, it's important to establish from the beginning what

Additionally, employment security may help align the interests of employees and Hospital partners.
Hospital problems are reduced because when job security exists, the employees, like shareholders,
are concerned about the long–term success of the firm. With the commitment from the Hospital for
job security, application of laws becomes a relationship that both the employer and employee has to
manage.
Application of Laws
Many employers are required to develop affirmative action plans (AAPs) that identify problem areas
in the employment of protected–class members and initiate goals and steps to overcome those
problems. Memorial Hospital is no different. Memorial follows all laws on sex/gender
discrimination, which have addressed issues regarding pregnancy discrimination, unequal pay for
similar jobs, and sexual harassment.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that most employers identify the essential
functions of jobs and make reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities, unless
undue hardship results.
Implementation of equal employment opportunity requires appropriate record keeping, such as
completing the annual report (EEO–1), and keeping applicant flow data. Below is the Civil Rights
Act of 1964, Title VII and what it covers. I have also included some additional information that fall
under the umbrella of the Civil Right Act of 1964,

Texas Constitution Question #2
A couple centuries ago, to be specific 1827 was the year of the very first Texas Constitution. The
first Texas constitution was called, The Constitution of Coahuila y Tejas. The population of what is
now Texas was about four–thousand. Before declaring its independence from Mexico, Texas
operated under the Mexican Constitution where there were two houses of congress.
The lower house was composed of deputies serving two year terms. In the upper house, senators
served four year terms and were selected by state legislatures. Texas's break with Mexico was in
large part a constitutional crisis that culminated in separation. Political conventions were held
because the Texas citizens weren't happy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It wasn't written in a way that it would permanently stick throughout the future for say like the U.S
Constitution. The Constitution of Texas in my point of view should be rewritten with new type of
language form that it would be précised to the point so it is clear to understand. Reasons being: The
Texas constitution is almost a hundred thousand words long with over 500 modifications, it is way
too long and disorganized, making it difficult to adequately understand. Resulting from many
addition of so many amendments, the constitution is now one of the longest and most confusing
constitutions out of all 50 states in the United States. Another even more alarming problem the
Texas Constitution has, is the fragmented executive branch. The governor doesn't have control over
other states authorities, instead, he shares authority with them. The governor's powers are limited.
Another problem it has is the high level of detail. The high levels of details are accompanied by
confusing organizations. Coverage of individual subject areas can be excruciating to read. For
example areas like local governments are found in several different parts of the constitution. In those
parts the constitution has some gaps where whole sections have been repealed. This means an entire
articles have been repealed leaving only the title but no text. That's a great example of why John E
Paynter stated that "you don't ever write a constitution like Texas's." I

Constantly the boys are instilled with the dreams that they are gonna be big in college and then

only six players have tried for or made the pro leagues telling us that football is not a good career.
The boys envision themselves playing for some of the biggest colleges in the nation, however for
many they want even have the grades to stay in college academically. "Charlie Billingsley found out
that life in college was a whole lot different ...you were a whole lot more expendable in

Why Did Texas Almost Fail as a Spanish Essay
Why Did Texas Almost Fail as a Spanish Colony?
Why do the ventures of man fail? The ventures of men fail primarily due to a lack of planning. In
the case of Spanish colonies in Texas this holds true. The Spanish first set eyes on the Texas coast in
1519 and in 1821 they lowered their flag for the final time in Texas. The Spanish had about 300
years to try and colonize Texas and the attempt to colonize and settle Texas was not very successful.
The initial boats that came to Texas were shipwrecked and only four people survived of the
approximately 270 men that made the trip. One of these four survivors was Cabeza De Vaca. These
were the first Spaniards to live on Texas soil. Cabeza had a goal to settle Texas and befriend ... Show

Third, the Spanish failed to plan for the hostility of the Comanche and Apache Indians living in the
area. Thus, the difficult geography, the weak missions, and hostile Indians were the main causes of
the near failure of the Spanish colonies in Texas.
The geography, primarily the distances between settled areas in Texas was a real problem for the
colonization of Texas by the Spaniards. The Spanish were well established in Mexico City in the
south and in New Mexico to the north. However, the distance from Mexico City and the missions in
San Antonio was about 700 miles (Doc A). Also, the distance from San Antonio to Santa Fe, New
Mexico was about the same distance of 700 miles (Doc A). These were the two closest developed
areas to the new colonies. In those days, travel was primarily by mule train and it would take around
two months to travel these distances (Doc A). These vast distances made it difficult for trade and
made it expensive to transport needed supplies to the newly settled areas. The expense of
transportation between settlements lead to very slow economic development and without a chance to
make a living people were just not willing to move to the new settlements. In addition to the
distances, the land in the area was characterized by very rough terrain and with very little water
(Doc A). Since travel was by animals pulling wagons the availability of fresh water was important in
order to water the mules and

Cultural and Regional Support Bitzi will enjoy support throughout the vast majority of the state.
Specifically the Panhandle, North Central, the Hill Country, East and, in particular, her home region
of West Texas much like Rick Perry did back in 2010. (Stiles, 2010) All areas are Republican heavy
albeit with a few outposts of Democratic heavy counties scattered about. Also like Perry her
weakness will be the areas along the border, major metropolitan centers of San Antonio, Houston,
Dallas and traditionally Travis County. (Stiles, 2010) Studies have been done that show Texas falls
somewhere in the middle of traditionalistic and individualistic political cultures. Historically, as
Texas was a slave holding state and a member of the Confederacy, it 's political culture was planted
firmly in traditionalism. However, Texas with it 's strong pro–business orientation getting larger
every year tends to blend individualism with it 's original culture of traditionalism. (Newell, Prindle,

The Health And Human Services Commission
Texans are being short changed by the proposed Medicaid cuts. Legislature has told the Texas
Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) that they must cut $350 million from the
Medicaid funding over the next two years. In order to abide by the legislature's demands, the HHSC
has proposed cutting the reimbursement rates for pediatric physical and occupational therapists on
average by 10 to 25 percent. And pediatric speech therapists would face cuts of 16 to 27 percent.
Many feel that these cuts to the therapy payments have little to no effect on the services that children
with disabilities receive. These individuals say that following the orders will assist in reducing the
therapy rates and will reduce the practice of excess therapy. On the opposing side, it has been
expressed that cutting therapy funds that the State of Texas provides has the potential to cause
individuals within the pediatric population to lose crucial therapy services. The planned cuts have
the risk to jeopardize the potential of our nation's young. The cuts also make many agency's that
currently provide occupational, physical and speech therapy vulnerable to closures and lay–offs. The
people that are promoting the cuts to the Medicaid funding for providers that offer occupational,
physical and speech therapy feel that the reductions are necessary to curve–tale the surplus practice
of various agencies. Many agencies have found multiple loop–holes that allow services to be

History The first settlers in Texas were not the Americans it was the Tejano indians a tribe which
had lived in the Texas region for about 100 years. The worst part of the whole Americans coming

time. One of the great past events that had come up in the history of Texas is that it was the 28th
state named just after the 27th state Florida. Another great historic event in Texan history is when
Sam Houston launched a surprise attack on the Mexican general Santa Anna along the San Jacinto

Executive Summary : Funding For Education
Executive Summary: Funding for Education
Introduction
In 1836 Texans listed the failure of the Mexican government to provide education as one of their
grievances in the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico (Texas Education Agency). Since
the founding of Texas, education has been an extremely important part of the state government.
According to Texas Politics Today, Article 7, Section 1 of the Texas Constitution states that a
"general diffusion of knowledge being essential to the preservation of the liberties and rights of the
people, it shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision
for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools." Today many Texans
are questioning if the funding for public schools is unfair and unconstitutional. Author of House
Leaders End Effort to Fix School Finance System, Terrence Stutz of the Dallas Morning News
reports, "In 2014 a state district judge ruled that the Legislature failed to adequately distribute funds
for education." Numerous Texans feel that the Foundation School Program is unequally distributing
school funding leaving public school districts and students disadvantaged.
Current Problems Public schools in Texas have been declining due to an unequal distribution of
funding and budget cuts stratifying middle and low–income districts while also limiting the
resources that are available to students needed to receive a quality education. Texas public

Similarities And Differences Between The Mesoamerica And...
Mesoamerica have been connected the North and South America culturally and geographically
throughout the history. Mesoamerican culture and aspects heavily influenced southwestern United
States, being the frontier borderline between North America and Mesoamerica. It is very important
to study the relationship between the Mesoamerica and American Southwest because American
Southwest contains various elements of Mesoamerican culture and this provides fundamental
information about human behaviors, history, interactions, and tradition in America. Our group has
selected Agriculture, Architecture, Religion, and Trade as our categories to analyze the relationship
between American southwest and Mesoamerica. Fair trade, we will focus on scarlet macaws and
how it got traded from Mesoamerica in the American southwest and its significance. For
architecture, we will compare the ball courts of Hohokam and that of Mesoamerica. Significance of
ball courts and how it got introduced into the American southwest from Mesoamerica will be
discussed as well. Religion will be analyzed by focusing on the cosmological beliefs of both groups
and the similarities and differences between Mesoamerican cosmology and American southwest
cosmology.
My focus is on the agriculture and maize domestication of both areas. Maize was first domesticated
in Mesoamerica, southern Mexico about 9000 years ago and dispersed into the southwestern United
States during the late middle archaic period.

US-MEXICAN WAR Essay
The U.S.–Mexican War was a violent and shattering event for Mexican citizens that lasted from
1846–1848 in what is now the state of Texas. It drastically altered the course of Mexican and
American history for years to come. It occurred because of the unsettled disputes about the borders
of newly annexed Texas. Once the debilitating battle ended, the United States emerged a world
power having acquired more than 500,000 square miles of valuable territory. There are many
potentially feasible explanations on the cause of the war; including, fault laying with American
slaveholders for conquest of Mexico, the war as an American plot and responsibility lying with
President Polk of the United States. However, this paper focuses on the three ... Show more content

The U.S. "soon saw themselves masters of Louisiana, [ready to] spread their snares at once for the
rest of the Floridas, and the province of Texas." Mexico did not know how to handle this migration
from the U.S. as its citizens were still in the midst of the Mexican Revolution. It was the "insatiable
ambition of the United States, favored by [Mexican] weakness" that was the principle cause of the
U.S.–Mexican War. However, soon after the Mexican Republic was formed, it was realized that the
U.S. expansion into Mexico could become a real danger. Mexico had just attained its freedom from
Spain in the 1820s and as such, did not want to fall into another malevolent trap with the U.S.,
leaving its citizens unsure on how to proceed without starting a war. This is in part because not all
migration was unsolicited before the annexation of Texas. After Mexico declared its independence
from Spain it needed more settlers to populate the areas of Mexico without many citizens living in
its regions. Thus, in order to ease tensions between the countries a proposal was created that
involved U.S. citizens living in Texas to become citizens of Mexico and pledge allegiance to the
Mexican nation. They would become Catholics and obey the laws of their new nation. However,
what was decided on paper and what the settlers actually did were inconsistent with each other. The
settlers were unhappy with the rules of their new government,

Narrative History of Texas Annexation, Secession, and Readmission to the Union
Texans voted in favor of annexation to the United States in the first election following independence
in 1836. However, throughout the Republic period (1836–1845) no treaty of annexation negotiated
between the Republic and the United States was ratified by both nations.
When all attempts to arrive at a formal annexation treaty failed, the United States Congress
passed––after much debate and only a simple majority––a Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to
the United States. Under these terms, Texas would keep both its public lands and its public debt, it
would have the power to divide into four additional states "of convenient size" in the future if it so

Ordinance of Secession on February 1 and a Declaration of Causes on February 2. This proposal
was approved by the voters, but even before Texas could become "independent" as provided for in
the text of the Ordinance, it was accepted by the Provisional Government of the Confederate States
of America as a state on March 1, 1861.
The Secession Convention, reconvened on March 2, approved an ordinance accepting Confederate
statehood on March 5. Texas delegates to the Provisional Confederate Government had already been
elected, and they were among those who approved the proposed Confederate Constitution. Their
action was confirmed by the Secession Convention on March 23.
Throughout the Civil War period, Texas existed as a state in the Confederate States of America, its
status confirmed by the elected representatives of the Texas citizens. (Sam Houston, although

integrity. Spending most of his youth in Tennessee, he was impatient and reckless with a sense of
adventure which lead him to the Cherokee country. His time spent with family and the Cherokee
Indians is where he developed his practical, level–headed and grounded character. Houston's passion
for peace and support for the Cherokee's came from having seen the effects of war and strife on the

"The Indians had owned the land," Houston argued, "so the government by virtue of conquest could
sell it." (HOUSTON, P.111). Congress had to go along with this bill for political reasons. The bill
when passed acknowledged the Indians' legal title to their Texas land and at the same time prevented
speculators from snapping up the land for white expansion. The bill passed unanimously.
Unfortunately Houston's revenge for the Cherokees was short–lived as Congress repealed the bill
the next year.
As a military and political figure, Houston's decisions were not popular at times. Elected as

The Petroleum Industry In Odessa, Texas
The purpose of this research is to identify the impact of the petroleum industry on Odessa, Texas
during the 20th century. The main objective of this research is to explain how the massive growth of
the petroleum industry in Odessa came about and the social changes that had occurred as a result of
the thriving oil industry. Beginning in North Texas, the boom then spread to West Texas when the
United States became desperate for oil during and after World War I and II. This research drew upon
primary and secondary sources such as oral interviews, memoirs, articles and books from the local
University library. Upon examination of these sources it becomes clear that the discovery of oil in
Odessa, Texas became the foundation for the towns economic ... Show more content on

There were previously no pipelines or permanent ways to transport the oil to the markets from the
Permian Basin. When the Texas and Pacific Railway was placed in service in 1881 from Fort Worth
to El Paso, Odessa's economy changed. When the Texas and Pacific Railway was finally operational
in Midland, it boosted Midland to become the oil business headquarter of the Midland/Odessa area.
Midland, Texas was the midway point between Fort Worth and El Paso, hence the name 'Midland'.
This midway point made Midland the perfect place for a railway stop during the establishment of
the railway. Soon after the Texas and Pacific Railway was active and Midland became an oil
bustling business town with pump jacks littering the outskirts of the town. Midland then became
organized by its own county legislator in 1885. Oil businesses needed a place for supplies and oil
gusher production to be stored until transportation however, the location needed to be outside of
town but not far enough away where it would be a burden to retrieve. That is what made Odessa the
perfect place to store supplies as Midland was roughly forty miles away. Odessa merely existed in
name until it became organized in 1891 as a supply center for many of the oil businesses located in
Midland. The Texas and Pacific Railway placed the

Essay Sam Houston
Sam Houston
Sam Houston was as legend reports a big man about six foot and six inches tall. He was an exciting
historical figure and war hero who was involved with much of the early development of our country
and Texas. He was a soldier, lawyer, politician, businessman, and family man, whose name will be
synonymous with nation heroes who played a vital part in the shaping of a young and prosperous
country. He admired and supported the Native Americans who took him in and adopted him into
their culture to help bridge the gap between the government and a noble forgotten race. Sam
Houston succeeded in many roles he donned as a man, but the one most remembered is the one of a
true American hero.
On March 2, 1793, Samuel Houston was born ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Surprisingly, Houston resigned his commission in the army over false accusations concerning his
involvement in slave trading.
Houston studied law in Judge James Trimble's law office in Nashville, Tennessee. Six months later
he passed the bar and started a law practice in Lebanon, Tennessee where he was appointed Adjutant
General of the state of Tennessee, with the military rank of Colonel. Next, he was nominated and
won the office of Attorney General of the Nashville District in Tennessee. Sam later resigned to
return to private law practice, but was soon elected by his fellow officers to the position of Major
General in the Tennessee state militia. He had a history of bouncing back and forth between politics
and the military. Nominated by Andrew Jackson's Democratic Party for the U.S. House of
Representatives, Houston won the election by getting 100% of the votes. Not uncommon for
politicians in the time period, Sam Houston badly wounded General William A. White in a duel
fought 6 miles south of Franklin, Kentucky. Soon after, in 1827 Sam was elected Governor of
Tennessee, replacing two–term Governor William Carrol. Two years later he married his first wife,
Eliza Allen, an 18–year–old daughter of a plantation owner. Within two weeks of his marriage,
Houston was announced as a candidate for re–election as Governor of Tennessee. Sam separated
from his wife Eliza after less than four months of marriage. One week later he resigned as Governor
of

Friday Night Lights Essay on Bissinger's Insights

  • 1. Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger Essay H.G. Bissinger's Friday Night Lights brings to mind the cold, autumn nights of 1988 where a town, just like any other rural town in America, was brought together in such a raw and emotional way. From the rise and fall of Boobie Miles to the push for the playoffs, it is clear that 1988 Odessa was swept up in the glory of football to replace the grandeur of the 1950s, which seemed to deteriorate throughout that hectic decade. While a modern reader may view Bissinger's masterpiece as a tale from a dated and faraway place, several factors have kept it in the public's eye. What is it about Friday Night Lights that still resonates today? The answer can still be found in the same rural towns of America. Though it may seem incredible, Texas is ... Gerrymandering even occurred in the school district so Permian could hold on to its precious team and receive all of the talented black players from the poor side of town. Practices such as the ones mentioned above are by no means extinct. In my own school district of Round Rock, Texas, similar things occurred. Though my district prides itself on preparing students for college, football is still king. It seems as if Round Rock requires at least one of its five 5–A schools to be good at football. In 2010, Cedar Ridge High School was created in the Round Rock Independent School District. Strangely enough, once Cedar Ridge opened, all high schools seemed to be concerned about their football teams. All of the extraordinary players were primarily from the area of the city that Cedar Ridge was being built. Rather than being proud of Round Rock for accommodating more people due to the school's location, citizens were angered when Cedar Ridge became the new powerhouse in football. Citizens of Round Rock not being able to put instances such as this in perspective and celebrate a new school is a major similarity to the Odessans of 1988. A community and its culture hold a ... Essay on Houstons Land Use Policy Priscilla Ortiz Government 2306 Professor Andrew Teas Houston Land Use Policy Houston is a large city with very unique qualities that most cities cannot even begin to understand, but is this just Houstonian pride talking? No, actually one of the unique qualities that Houston has is how we handle our land use planning. Houston is well known for not having any zoning ordinances, which has become a well–known topic for a while now. People argue weather our lack of zoning is chaotic, unorthodox, or independent and distinct. Another unique quality that we have is where our political culture stands. Dr. Elazar describes political culture as everyone being impacted by the beliefs and values of the dominant groups in society; these groups can range in between three categories of political culture moralistic, Individualistic, and traditionalistic. According to the book, moralistic political culture is when citizens understand the state and the nation as commonwealths designed to further the shared interest of everyone. In Individualistic political culture, citizens understand the state and the nation as marketplaces in which people strive to better their personal welfare, citizen participation is encouraged. In Traditionalistic political culture, citizens technically believe in democracy, but emphasize respect to elite rule within a hierarchal society and citizen participation is not encouraged. Texas stands right in between Individualistic and Traditionalistic in the scale of political culture. Water, without it nothing can survive. Texas is the second largest state for landmass in the nation and ninth for water square miles. Within the borders of Texas are more than 100 lakes, 14 major rivers, and 23 aquifers, so why has water become such an important issue for the state? Politicians and conservationists all agree that without a new working water plan, the state could be facing one of the most damaging environmental disasters they have ever seen. The second issue that is affecting Texas' water is the drought conditions that the state is currently suffering from. Since 1990 Texas has seen a trend towards warmer and drier summers than usual. Texas which geographically sits in the south central part of the United States with an extensive border with the Gulf of Mexico gets its weather patterns from both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Researchers have shown that warmer than normal temperatures in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans often lead to drier than normal summers. The research also shows that these trends will last for more than 20 to 25 years. Since we have been in this weather pattern since 1990, (Hembreee), hopefully we are nearing the end of the dry cycle. However, Mother Nature is never predictable. Meteorologists are only able to speculate about a week in advanced with any certainty. The eastern Pacific Ocean cycles between three phases, the three phases are El Nino, La Nina, and Neutral phase. Texas has all the locations you might need: forests, cliffs, mountainous desert that could pass for Mars, NASA's Johnson Space Center and even a coastline. The Lone Star state is often divided into four regions: the Gulf Coastal Plains, the Interior Lowlands, also called the North Central Plains, the Great Plains and the Basin and Range or Mountains and Basins region. Each region has unique landforms and natural features. The first region of Texas is the Gulf Coastal Plains. The Gulf Coast stretches along the Gulf of Mexico for hundreds of miles. Cities such as Corpus Christi, Galveston, and Houston are in the Gulf Coast region. • 15. Friday Night Lights Movie Review Essay The movie "Friday Night Lights" is based on a book by author H.G. Bissinger. It takes place at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas in 1988 when tension between races was still strong in some areas of the south. There is a focus in some areas of the film having to do with the racial tension and ongoing conflict between the student body and the city as a whole. Even though desegregation had happened by the time the book was written and the film was made, schools sometimes were still racially divided. I also felt the movie showed how this football program exploited their black athletes. Of interest to me was, the following of two of the main football players who are black. Boobie Miles and Ivory Christian. They are as well respected as their white equivalents on the football field but, it illustrates how attitudes change when the players walk off the field. The movie touches on the many controversial subjects like, racism, hypocrisy, and failure where as the book is extremely socially–oriented, and centered primarily on racial issues and educational priorities. The film touches on these issues, but, as I wrote, it is not the focal point of the movie. It appears that some of the scenes in the movie were actually filmed in the football stadium the Panther's played yet, other home games looked as if they had chosen another Texas stadium to film. Football is huge in Texas. While researching the truthfulness of the movie, I came to find that the local affiliate pre– empted a Major ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the age of three his mother moved to Oklahoma and left Boobie with his grandmother. He lived for a short time with his father, but allegations of physical abuse resulted in a lifetime of being bounced from foster home to foster home. Before Boobie started high school, his uncle, L.V. Miles, adopted him giving him a stable home and a positive role model. Influenced by his uncle, Boobie began to excel at sports, especially football. Football provided another "home" where Boobie got the kind of attention and admiration that led to opportunities someone from his background didn't typically get a full ride scholarship to college. He also gained a lot of attention for his attitude that was that nobody was as talented as he was. • 19. Texas : A Long History Of Conflict With The Federal... Texas has a long history of conflict with the federal government over laws and policies, particularly when dealing with environmental, social, and educational issues. Texas has conservative right–wing views and has been in conflict more often with the federal government since President Obama has been in office. The dilemma generally arises from a clash in opposing political and social views. One major issue that has arisen in over the course of the last two years has been a battle over funding for Planned Parenthood. Although the courts have deemed that this quarrel is not about abortion rights or access to abortion, the truth of the matter is that it really is. Texas leaders are against abortion and are trying to skirt federal law that allows abortion by imposing their personal agenda opposing abortion or anything that seemingly supports abortion on the Texas people. The problem is that in the midst of this chaos, low–income women of Texas are the ones who are suffering through the loss of basic and preventative healthcare. Texas, working in conjunction with the federal government, in 2005 created the Medicaid Women's Health Program (WHP) under the senate bill 747 and house bill 2663 of the 79th Legislature, executed and overseen by the Health and Human Services Commission (Planned Parenthood). This program allocated funds for low–income women's healthcare for a duration of five years. The program began on January 1, 2007. For every dollar spent by the state, the federal ... Every state that has Social Security or Medicare suffered when the recession hit, which caused many to loss money, not just Texas. The Middle Pecos Groundwater Conservation District water edited corey paul to Mary, me 50 minutes agoDetails The Middle Pecos Groundwater Conservation District will set a hearing for the company seeking a new water supply for Odessa as soon as this month, while a public battle over the proposal continues. Winning the hearing doesn't mean Republic Water Company of Texas will win approval to export the water. Board members, for example, could dismiss the application as another version of a request the board already denied, prompting another lawsuit. But City of Odessa and company officials say they view it as a step closer to winning an export permit for what they describe as a long–term and higher quality water supply even if it might end up costing more. The district will have to hold the hearing by the end of the year after determining the application complete. Meanwhile, company officials say they still plan to request a hearing before an administrative law judge instead of the district board. The judge's decision would be non–binding but could be used in a lawsuit if the board acted against his or her findings. "It's always been our intention because of the emotional nature of this topic in that county that everyone would be better served if you take it out of the hands of this district and have a (State Office of Administrative Hearings) judge view it without this lens," said Jimmy Perkins, a principal with Republic Water Company. Character Analysis Of Battleship Potemkin Battleship Potemkin The Battleship Potemkin is a film that shows the images of anguish and suffering, even though the movie has no sound, one can understand the emotion and anguish behind the story. This film showed how the sailors are being mistreated by the higher–ranking officers on the ship. The officers take their anger out on the sailors in an abusive way and try to make them eat rotten food with maggots in it. All the sailors start getting sick of the way they are being treated and decide to take a stand, by refusing to eat the rotten food. This would induce an emotional response from the viewers, because of the human suffering shown in the film, it can bring out feelings of anger from the audience, as they have empathy for the sailors. The officers want to punish the sailors, by having the ones who would not eat the soup to come forward, then they covered them with a tarp and ordered the sailors who were not being insubordinate to shoot them. This part of the film conveyed a sense of anxiety in the viewers as they knew this was wrong and unjust. The other sailors realized that it was wrong to shoot their brothers and refused to shoot them, this caused a big fight among the sailors and the officers. The sailors outnumbered the officers and threw them overboard and took over the ship. During this scene, the viewer goes from anger and anxiety, to feelings of relief and elation, although, it is short lived because the film goes returns to death, loss, and suffering. ... For millions of immigrants, America has been seen as the land of opportunity where anyone could become anything he or she wanted to be. A family that believes strongly in the American dream can be found in Amy Tan's short story, "Two Kinds." The story centers around the daughter of a Chinese immigrant who desperately wants her daughter to become successful. In the story, the author shows the difficult lives immigrants face when moving to a new culture. The angry tone in the beginning leads to tension, but ends on a softer note once Jing–mei is older and learns to be more sympathetic. The setting of the story helps the theme become more realistic. In addition to setting, the author uses symbols to strengthen the theme of the story. In the story, the mother buys Jing–mei a piano on which to practice. The mother and Jing–mei have different perspectives on what this symbol means. To Jing–mei, the piano symbolizes her mother trying to change her into something other than herself; however, the piano symbolizes the American dream to her mother. Eventually as Jing–mei ages, she could see her mother's idea on what the piano means and learns to appreciate the piano. When Jing–mei is a woman, "[she] realized that ["Pleading Child" and "Perfectly Contended"] were two halves of the same song" (Tan 9). As Critic Cynthia Becerra states, "the self–realization completes this rich vignette, it is not without pain and loss. The symbolical piano helps the theme by showing the contrasting views between the mother and the daughter in their relationship. Reasons being: The Texas constitution is almost a hundred thousand words long with over 500 modifications, it is way too long and disorganized, making it difficult to adequately understand. Resulting from many addition of so many amendments, the constitution is now one of the longest and most confusing constitutions out of all 50 states in the United States. Another even more alarming problem the Texas Constitution has, is the fragmented executive branch. The governor doesn't have control over other states authorities, instead, he shares authority with them. The governor's powers are limited. Another problem it has is the high level of detail. The high levels of details are accompanied by confusing organizations. Coverage of individual subject areas can be excruciating to read. For example areas like local governments are found in several different parts of the constitution. In those parts the constitution has some gaps where whole sections have been repealed. In the case of Spanish colonies in Texas this holds true. The Spanish first set eyes on the Texas coast in 1519 and in 1821 they lowered their flag for the final time in Texas. The Spanish had about 300 years to try and colonize Texas and the attempt to colonize and settle Texas was not very successful. The initial boats that came to Texas were shipwrecked and only four people survived of the approximately 270 men that made the trip. One of these four survivors was Cabeza De Vaca. The Spanish were well established in Mexico City in the south and in New Mexico to the north. However, the distance from Mexico City and the missions in San Antonio was about 700 miles (Doc A). Legislature has told the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) that they must cut $350 million from the Medicaid funding over the next two years. In order to abide by the legislature's demands, the HHSC has proposed cutting the reimbursement rates for pediatric physical and occupational therapists on average by 10 to 25 percent. And pediatric speech therapists would face cuts of 16 to 27 percent. Many feel that these cuts to the therapy payments have little to no effect on the services that children with disabilities receive. These individuals say that following the orders will assist in reducing the therapy rates and will reduce the practice of excess therapy. On the opposing side, it has been expressed that cutting therapy funds that the State of Texas provides has the potential to cause individuals within the pediatric population to lose crucial therapy services. The planned cuts have the risk to jeopardize the potential of our nation's young. The cuts also make many agency's that currently provide occupational, physical and speech therapy vulnerable to closures and lay–offs. The people that are promoting the cuts to the Medicaid funding for providers that offer occupational, physical and speech therapy feel that the reductions are necessary to curve–tale the surplus practice of various agencies. Executive Summary : Funding For Education Executive Summary: Funding for Education Introduction In 1836 Texans listed the failure of the Mexican government to provide education as one of their grievances in the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico (Texas Education Agency). Since the founding of Texas, education has been an extremely important part of the state government. According to Texas Politics Today, Article 7, Section 1 of the Texas Constitution states that a "general diffusion of knowledge being essential to the preservation of the liberties and rights of the people, it shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools." Today many Texans are questioning if the funding for public schools is unfair and unconstitutional. Author of House Leaders End Effort to Fix School Finance System, Terrence Stutz of the Dallas Morning News reports, "In 2014 a state district judge ruled that the Legislature failed to adequately distribute funds for education." Numerous Texans feel that the Foundation School Program is unequally distributing school funding leaving public school districts and students disadvantaged. Current Problems Public schools in Texas have been declining due to an unequal distribution of funding and budget cuts stratifying middle and low–income districts while also limiting the resources that are available to students needed to receive a quality education. For architecture, we will compare the ball courts of Hohokam and that of Mesoamerica. Significance of ball courts and how it got introduced into the American southwest from Mesoamerica will be discussed as well. Religion will be analyzed by focusing on the cosmological beliefs of both groups and the similarities and differences between Mesoamerican cosmology and American southwest cosmology. It drastically altered the course of Mexican and American history for years to come. It occurred because of the unsettled disputes about the borders of newly annexed Texas. Once the debilitating battle ended, the United States emerged a world power having acquired more than 500,000 square miles of valuable territory. There are many potentially feasible explanations on the cause of the war; including, fault laying with American slaveholders for conquest of Mexico, the war as an American plot and responsibility lying with President Polk of the United States. The U.S. "soon saw themselves masters of Louisiana, [ready to] spread their snares at once for the rest of the Floridas, and the province of Texas." Mexico did not know how to handle this migration from the U.S. as its citizens were still in the midst of the Mexican Revolution. It was the "insatiable ambition of the United States, favored by [Mexican] weakness" that was the principle cause of the U.S.–Mexican War. However, soon after the Mexican Republic was formed, it was realized that the U.S. expansion into Mexico could become a real danger. Mexico had just attained its freedom from Spain in the 1820s and as such, did not want to fall into another malevolent trap with the U.S., leaving its citizens unsure on how to proceed without starting a war. This is in part because not all migration was unsolicited before the annexation of Texas. After Mexico declared its independence from Spain it needed more settlers to populate the areas of Mexico without many citizens living in its regions. Thus, in order to ease tensions between the countries a proposal was created that involved U.S. citizens living in Texas to become citizens of Mexico and pledge allegiance to the Mexican nation. They would become Catholics and obey the laws of their new nation. However, what was decided on paper and what the settlers actually did were inconsistent with each other. However, throughout the Republic period (1836–1845) no treaty of annexation negotiated between the Republic and the United States was ratified by both nations. When all attempts to arrive at a formal annexation treaty failed, the United States Congress passed––after much debate and only a simple majority––a Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to the United States. Unfortunately Houston's revenge for the Cherokees was short–lived as Congress repealed the bill the next year. As a military and political figure, Houston's decisions were not popular at times. Elected as commander in chief of the Texas Army, while most preferred a direct confrontation with Santa Anna's army, Houston knowing the limited size, funding and lack of training of the Texas Army, preferred what seemed to be a plan of retreat on the surface but actually was a plan of patience and timing for the right place and the right time to attack.
