Friday Night Lights Book Report
Friday Night Lights is a non–fictional book written by Harry Gerard Bissinger III. Bissinger wrote the book in 1990. Chris Weeden wrote that Bissinger
said, "It's my best book, my most ambitious book, but I knew halfway through it was going to have a very limited audience" (2006). Bissinger was in
search of a town controlled solely by sports. Therefore, this search led him to the Permian High School in Odessa, Texas (the setting for the novel).
Friday Night Lights shows how a struggling town uses its beloved high school football team to overcome racial problems, political disagreements, and
an unprosperous economy. The Permian High School football team and the superstars of the team give the struggling community something to believe

At last, the chance to go to the state championship came down to a 4th and 6 for the Permian High School with ten seconds left. A touchdown would
win the game for the Permian football team; however, an incomplete pass would end the game in a devastating matter. The dedicated followers of
Permian Football told the result of the play with pure silence opposed to the eruption of the other team. The Permian High School football team lost the
semi–finals and were taunted with "NO MO' MOJO, MOJO NO MO!" (Bissinger, 1990, p. 334) from the opposing fans. The valiant superstars, team,
and town's dream had fallen just short for that season. The well–known player names of Boobie, Winchell, Mcdougal, Billingsley, Chavez, and
Christian were taken off the depth chart wall following game; which will soon be replaced by the future of Permian Football. Nevertheless, a life lesson
is taught to each player and fan, life goes on... Friday Night Lights written by Harry Gerard Bissinger is a must read for any sports avid reader.
Bissinger illustrates the lesson that life goes on through a treasured football team surrounded by a troublesome community. Bissinger is also able to
show how a local high school sports team influences the activities that happen in the town. In the grand scheme of things, a local high school football
team should not be able to unite and inspire a community to continue on despite the hardships, but the Permian Football team was not your average

Sonic Monologue
Scourage's POV I mind as well stay in this damn jail for the rest of my days. Things just aren't the same anymore. So what if I lost my temper and was
about to go ape shit on the rest of my crew? All's I wanted to was get back at sonic and those damn freedom fighters and now here I am, barely feeling
like myself let alone an anti–sonic in jail without any of my other team mates. "this straight up sucks!" I said punching my hand into the wall. When I
did get here it was to look for sonic, but instead I found shadow. I didn't mind picking a fight with that dude, I'd figure I'd give him a run for his money,
but even in my super form I lost, and it felt like it didn't take much either. "at least I don't get bullied around here..." I said to myself, ... Show more

village hero." Knuckles said with a pose and fireworks going off in the background. "seriously? fireworks? No one gives my entrance fireworks!"
Knuckles continued to battle the robots, but eggman refused to give up. "luckily, I have other robots, that have already made it to your friends house."
"oh no you don't!" said knuckles. He quickly headed to the homes of his friends. They were begin carried out by the robots. Knuckles picked them up
and put them down somewhere else and destroyed the robots. He then went inside to do the same, only to find them watching tv. "all right, this is my
favorite show! Pass the popcorn!" he then sat down with them and watched some tv. One show later Knuckles destroyed the robots and sent eggman

Apologia In Sports Research Paper
II. Sports and Apologia Commentary Apologia In Sports –Commentary #1 Apologia is an incredibly important field in the media, let alone in sports. A
recurring theme in the recent sports culture is the mistakes of popular athletes. Sports culture has become a huge aspect of our society. As more time
passes, sports become more influential in our communities. It has come to the point where everyone tunes in or hears about the mishaps of our athletic
role model and their public apologies. It seems like every week there is another tragedy in sports, in the sense that another star athlete has potentially
ruined his career. Every month there are athletes pissing their opportunities away. And people are always drooling to see what they have to say about it,
if they are sorry or that they denial. Although it is getting more popular now, forms of apologia have been involved in sports ever since sports became
popular. The earliest major form of athletic apologia was the Black Sox scandal. The Black Sox Scandal has become huge deal in Baseball and all of
the major sports. Allegedly, the World Series of 1919 were fixed by the players of the Chicago White Sox. This was a huge insult to all of those

Thompson went to Louisville and saw the culture of the Kentucky Derby first hand. According to him, the Kentucky Derby was full of drunken idiots.
It was ironic because it was often viewed as a very proper event that consists of rich classy people. I real life, it is one huge party. This is all proven
when he says, "The rest of the day blurs into madness. The rest of that night too. And all the next day and night. Such horrible things occurred that I
can't bring myself even to think about them now, much less out them down in print," (DDAY FOUR). This reinforces that the culture around this event
was incredibly festive, perhaps even to a fault. The festive culture and environment actually fuels the event's popularity. The event draws so much

Analysis Of The Movie ' House '
"When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home."
Everything in my life had been improving! Darry and I rarely fought, instead of tension, there was a connection. Even though he never said it, I could
tell he felt it too. I was still thinking about Johnny a ton (it had been 7 weeks since he had died), but I had accepted that he wasn 't with us physically. I
kept him in my heart, and instead of grieving, I remembered all of our fun times together. Moving on, school was better than ever. After I turned in my
essay, it made its way up to the school board. They sent a copy home with each kid, so the parents would know what really happened. The truth was
revealed, and I made some good buddies, who didn 't care if I was a Greaser, or a Soc, or a middle man. My grades were back to straight A's and Darry
was as proud as can be. I had to quit track, in order to make time for football. I'm was and still am the starting running back on my high school football
team, and Darry had just quit one of his jobs, when he got offered the position of head coach. He was still fixing roofs, and coaching football at the
same time. Darry was happy, he had found a way to follow his dreams. That was last month. By the end of this week, our lives had changed! One
random Thursday, after Darry came home from roofing, he told Sodapop and I, about the lady he had met at the house he was roofing, "This

Jack Johnson's Role In The Civil Rights Movement
While at Dartmouth, although it was a period of social change, racial tensions were still high when he arrived on campus along with the first
"substantial group of African American males" (Hoover and Eschenbach). Bogan believed that they were "pioneers of their race" (Bogan). Although,
Dartmouth held a reputation for being welcoming to black men, the Civil Rights Movement was "a time of heightened consciousness [towards race],"
so they banded together to form their own community (Hoover and Eschenbach). While Bogan did believe that sports were a way to rise above low
socioeconomic status, he, unlike many others, realized that "education was the thing that was going to allow [him] to achieve a measure of success and
financial independence" (Hoover ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He grew up in a crowded lower–middle class home, filled with eight children in a "predominantly white neighborhood" (Carroll 9) (Foster 52).
Although he was small, Pollard was "much faster than other children his age," so he began playing high school football, despite his size. He hoped that
like his inspiration, Jack Johnson, he could also succeed as a "black athlete in the white–dominated athletic world" (Carroll 26 – 28). Johnson had
overcome racial boundaries to become the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, setting an example and sending a message to young Fritz
Pollard–that it was possible for black men to succeed in athletics (Carroll 27–28). This propelled Pollard forward, allowing him to flourish as he
became an excellent high school football player, and went on to play for Brown University (Carroll 30). At this time, Brown's racial climate was tense,
so integrating into the team as an equal proved to be a challenge, but "once [his teammates] saw his talent, he won them over... [so] they had his back
no matter what" (Waleik). Unfortunately, it wasn't as easy to win over the rest of the football community, as he was often the target of "verbal and
physical abuse...even death threats," on and off the field (Waleik). Despite this, Pollard still became tremendously successful, playing and coaching for
the NFL after college, in addition to being inducted into the Brown Athletics Hall of Fame (1971), and finally the Professional Football Hall of Fame
(2005), an honor for which he had been passed over 40 times prior (Hoover and Eschenbach). Pollard set an example, like the one Jack Johnson set for
him, for the many young black athletes that would come after him, like J. Mayo William '21, who faced major adversity and poverty yet still played on
Brown's football team and later went on to play in the NFL (Hoover and Eschenbach). Although, Pollard is one of

Participation in youth sports can be extremely beneficial to children – the ability to form lasting friendships, be an active member of a team, and
development of physical skills and abilities. However, youth sports can be controversial, and often political. Many coaches of youth sports participate
in favoritism of their players or use dictator–like coaching methods to yield the result they desire. Additionally, the risk of injury, especially due to
specialization at a young age, is a major concern for child athletes. After observing a youth basketball game, watching several sports–related movies,
and learning a vast amount of information regarding sports in American culture, I have come to the conclusion that participation ... Show more content

There is autocratic coaching, democratic coaching, and holistic coaching methods. Autocratic coaching is when the coach tells the players what to do
and expects them to do exactly that or face consequences – Coaches Herb Brooks and Herman Boone fall under this category. Brooks and Boone are
both autocratic because they run their team like a dictatorship and expect immediate results from their players. While Brooks and Boone use force to
get their results, this does not mean that they do not have compassion for their players. Conversely, Coach Joe embodies the holistic method to
coaching; he takes the time to listen to Jess's concerns, needs, and opinions. Joe takes the time to ensure that Jess is confident in her abilities as a
football player and in result, raises her self–esteem significantly. Additionally, I believe that Coach Gary Gaines represents the democratic style of
coaching. Gaines works with his players, even though demanding at times, to help them improve and become better athletes. Gaines is able to connect
to his players as not only a coach, but also as a father

Racial Tensiona and Low Expectation on Black Athletes in...
In Odessa, an oil–rich town in West Texas, there is a line that separates the two races of blacks and whites. They called it "the American version of the
Berlin Wall – the railroad tracks that inevitably ran through the heart of town" (Bissinger 91). The tracks are the symbol of the barrier, tension, and
attitude that stand between the two races. To the Odessan whites, African Americans are often considered extraneous, with few hopes and dreams to
follow. It is also a common part of everyday language to blurt out the word "nigger," without ever categorizing it in a racist context. To escape the
predisposed perception, the football stadium, where the night lights shine, is the solitary premises where blacks accepted as an identity, as well ... Show

This accident not only jeopardizes Boobie's career, but also lay down the principal truth behind athletes of colors. Accordingly, Bissinger shows the
readers how Blacks are viewed: "Just do to him what a trainer did to a horse...shoot him to put him out of the misery of life that no longer had any
value" (Bissinger 67). The imagery illustrates here depicts an oppression tone which translates to the fact that Blacks athletes are solely exploited until
they have reach their point of exhaustion. In sum, Bissinger is implying that African American are only accepted in the realm of Odessa football
because they are physically capable of bringing victory to the game. However, when black athletes are seen as no longer useful in the playing field, the
Permian whites automatically omit them from the hierarchy. Laurence Hurd, an African American Church of Christ minister, compared this prejudice to
the period of slavery: "Today, instead of the cotton field, it's the sports arena" (Bissinger 109). Through the dialogue of Hurd, the reader can clearly see
that this comparison reflects the antebellum era, in which labor oppression as well as unfair discrimination were at its prime against people of color. For
that matter, Hurd is essentially highlighting the perpetuation of blacks' exploitation, specifying the continuous prejudice thoughts from the White
society. Unfortunately, Boobie fell under this curse of

Bulllock Vs Rodeo Research Paper
Many would not even consider being able to play 2 sports in college. Too much practice and not enough time is what some excuses are to being on two
collegiate athletic teams. There is one girl at the University of West Alabama who is breaking the mold on dual–sport athletes.
Blair Bullock is a freshman at UWA and she is a member of both the rodeo and basketball teams.
Some consider these sports polar opposites and even Bullock said, "They're a little different." Basketball and rodeo are usually not the two sports
people want to be a part of. Many would pick just one sport to play after high school but Blaire could not decide between the two.

Bullock said, "While being on both the rodeo team and the basketball teams my teammates are always coming to my events and games and it's
awesome to get the different crowds to mix together."
This is interesting because usually people would not associate rodeo and basketball together.
Rodeo is usually considered to be associated with southern sports and not really publicized as some of the other major collegiate sports.
Bullock's rodeo career could be determined as even better than her basketball career is sure to be. Rodeo is considered to be one of the most physical
and demanding sports that are sponsored by college universities.
Bullock was raised around horses and this is what got her interest into rodeo. She competed in competitions of breakaway roping and team roping. She
won a world championship in 2014 at the youth rodeo in the event of breakaway calf roping.

American Sport Movies Dealing with Racism

Sports are a big part of the fabric of American life. The centrality of sports in American life is amply reflected in the American cinema. For decades
movie makers have successfully mined sports to produce some of the most inspiring, poignant, exciting and memorable American movies ever made.
The genre of 'Sport Movies' established in the Fifties and the Sixties. At the very beginning it was hard to see it as an independent genre because there

The Role Of Football In H. G. Bissinger's Friday Night Lights
For many people, football is not just a sport. The book Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger is set in Odessa, Texas where thousands of people would
line up to buy tickets for the Permian Panthers' football games, not because they enjoyed watching football, but because of the hope and inspiration that
resonated throughout the field during a game. Even the players were able to recognize this feeling of invincibility because "whatever they fantasized
about, it all seemed possible that day" when they were playing football (24). Football becomes an outlet for the fans that draws the attention away from
the complexities of their lives and directs it towards a game that promotes innocence and hope for them. Football transforms Odessa from a bleak,
hopeless town into a place where anyone's wildest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the main reasons people in Odessa were always so crazy about football was because they needed an escape from the complications in their
everyday lives. Odessa was considered a boom–and–bust oil town, where sometimes the town was prosperous and produced a plentiful amount of oil
while at other times it experienced a decline in resources, which could cause a large amount of unemployment for the town. This made Odessa a
"transient town, a place to come to and make money when the boom was on and then get as far away from as possible with the inevitable setting in of
the bust" (29). Because of this uncertainty in the economy, many people were not doing as well as they might have been doing in another town, but
despite this, they did not move away for one common reason: the Permian Panthers. The fans in Odessa were not paying to see a

What Is The Significance Of Friday Night Lights
H.G. Bissinger makes it clear that while Odessa is a unique place, the ideas he presents can be true almost anywhere: "Odessa is the setting for this
book, but it could be anyplace in this vast land where, on a Friday night, a set of spindly stadium lights rises to the heavens to so powerfully, and so
briefly, ignite the darkness" (XIV). Friday Night Lights, a book by H.G. Bissinger, is set in Odessa, a small town located in Texas, where football is
revered by the entire town. Bissinger talks about "the enormous effect of sports on American life" and how it creates a sense of false hope (XII). Lewis
H. Lapham, a famous American writer, commented on the purpose of sports in America that correlates directly to Friday Night Lights. Lapham argues

Sports are a large part of America's culture as well as Odessa's. In Friday Night Lights, the players spend their entire lives training to be successful
because sports are all they have to look forward to. During the final game of the season to make it to state, Ronnie Beavers told his team, "This is the
last minute of your life" (326). Beavers quote shows the importance of the moment. If Permian does not win the game, they have nothing to look
forward to in their future. This semi–final game is "much more than a game" for Permian. What Beaver is saying is ridiculous, the Permian players act
like Football will determine their future. By following the players and the town, Bissinger is able to show readers how important sports are in Odessa.
Bissinger notes how it was "obvious" that the students of Permian hold the town on their shoulders (XIV). By following the story of the American small
town, including many personal anecdotes, Bissinger shows the effect that sports have in Odessa. Friday Night Lights supports Lapham's claim that
games represent much more than a game. It is not merely a game but a way of life. Permian players eat, breathe, and live football. Their lives are
centralized around one thing: Football. Bissinger describes the town when he states, "If you went to their homes, you might find black toilet seats, or
black seat cushions, or black phone book covers, or black paper plates, or black clocks, or black felt on their pool tables" (39). Bissinger throughout the
book displays how the town revolves around sports. Everything that Odessa does is centered around the football team. The players train everyday to

The Importance Of Football In Friday Night Lights
Within sports, pressure is always there; you have to learn to deal with it. H. G. Bissinger's book, Friday Night Lights, hones in on the football team the
Permian Panthers of Odessa. Through this focus on the team, one can see how football is an integral part of the town thriving, maintaining its hopes and
dreams. Despite the racial and social divide within the community, those Friday night games become a place where dreams may be made possible. In
this way, sports, specifically football, not only have an impact on the players but the community as well.
Within the novel, one can see how athletics, specifically football, holds more importance than education for the town of Odessa. Because of this,
players on the team start to be treated differently, like men rather than teenagers. In which, players become improperly prepared for the future and tend
to only make it out of Odessa through athletic ability alone. As for one of the players, he learns the hard way the effects of such emphasis on athletics
over education: "I've got no idea what I want to do. I've got no idea what school I want to go to. My SAT won't be worth a shit. And no football school
wants me." (Bissinger, Epilogue) This highlights sports in society, as well as the four agents of socialization due to parental and educational impacts.
Because of this, players follow a path that has been shaped for them rather than shaping their own path, causing future difficulties. For the case of
Permian Panther players,

Coach Eric Taylor leads his team in prayer: "We are all vulnerable, and we will all, at some point in our lives... fall. We will all fall. We must carry this
in our hearts... that what we have is special. That it can be taken from us, and when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very
souls. We will now all be tested. It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves" (Berg). This moment is about more than
football, it is about facing adversity. Although Coach Taylor's intent is to comfort the boys during a difficult time, his words ... Show more content on

On the other hand, in real life, athletes are stuck with the outcome and its impact. It seems that in other areas of life, this is understood. Over
exaggerated and unrealistic courtroom, hospital, and cop show dramas serve as a form of entertainment, so unfairness is accepted. However, sports are
viewed as an escape from reality in which the good guy has a chance (Phillips). However, the reality of the situation is that the myth of sports being
morally rewarding is as much a part of society as sports being an escape when morality fails (Phillips). Essentially, in fictional sports, the outcome of
the game does not determine whether the hero is successful. In this genre, accomplishments are measured in whether the hero exemplifies his virtuous
nature. The reality of the game being fictitious enables the plot to take on a more intricate meaning, which is exemplified in football themed television

Book Essay
Racism: A Recurring Theme in Friday Night Lights The surprisingly non–fiction novel, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, was
written by H. G. Bissinger in 1990. The story follows the Permian High School Panthers football team of 1998. The setting takes place in the town of
Odessa, Texas. Bissinger describes this town as, "the setting for this book, but it could be anyplace in this vast land where, on a Friday night, a set of
spindly stadium lights rises to the heavens to so powerfully, and so briefly, ignite the darkness." (16). It highlights the teams attempt at a Texas state
championship with plenty of distractions and obstacles along the way. The main barrier for players and staff of Permian High was racism. Some may
find it hard to believe but in the town of Odessa, desegregation was simply a "suggestion" and the community refused to accept the fact that white and
blacks are equal. It was not until the early eighties that Odessa desegregated.
To better understand the theme of racism throughout the novel towards African American players and staff of Permian High, a school made up of
almost ninety percent minorities, one must understand the background on how this book came about. The other two schools were Caucasian and almost
entirely white schools. While at Harvard, Bissinger had an idea to write a book that was focused on the impact that high school football had on

Literary Analysis Of Friday Night Lights
"Friday Night Lights" is a true story about a run–down town in Texas called Odessa. There are two high schools in Odessa, Odessa High School and
Permian High School. The "slums" of the town were usually where the minorities lived, compared to the nicer parts of the town where the whites lived.
When the two schools were combined, a black politician started a movement to s bring together the minorities and whites. The minority school was
shut down (which is not what was intended) and the better athletes were sent to Permian High and the rest were sent to Odessa High. Because Permian
was better known for their athletics, they received all the more athletic minorities. As the story moves along, Boobie Miles, the star running back for the

It is also comparing the area as an unmeasurable end of the earth, possibly comparing it to many instances in life. The third and final use of
personification includes, "It was in Odessa that I found those Friday night lights, and they burned with more intensity than I had ever imagined."
(Bessinger Preface) This compares the "burning of the lights" to that of something related to a fire, electricity, etc. Figure of speech is defined as a word
or phrase that has a meaning other than the literal meaning. The first example in this novel includes, "But he had held up under the physical
punishment, two, or three, or four tacklers driving into him on many of the plays, the risk always there that they would take a sweet–shot at his knee...a
jolting twack that sounded like a head–on car collision." (Bessinger 2) This quote gives an example using the term "sounded like a head–on car
collision" to exaggerate the sound of the hit that Boobie Miles took. Another quote example describes, "He felt good when he left the little white house
that he lived in, where a green pickup truck sat in the bare, litter–strewn yard like a wrecked boat washed up on the shore." (Bessinger 3) This
exaggerates the comparison of the yard of the house to a "washed up boat on shore" by giving you an image of a completely destroyed yard. The final
example of figure of speech used in this book involves, "He felt good at the pep

Competition Is Healthy, But Not Too Much
Competition is healthy, but not too much. "Just as competition is used to motivate people in a variety of educational and business settings, it can be
used to motivate your athletes in sport situations as well" (Burton) However, negative outcomes are not always the case. Athletics teaches essentials
children need to be exposed to at a young age. Playing sports helps students to stay fit, stay out of trouble, and keep their grades up. If budgets cut
athletics, it would do more harm than good. Reducing funding for athletics would negatively impact the overall student performance of academics and
life lessons athletics teach. Supporting high school athletics are critical to the development of adolescence. Anyone can be book smart, but street smart
comes from sports. Academics are important, but to become a well–rounded student sports are critical. Instead of getting rid of something that is
expensive, schools should be putting more effort into fundraising for it. "Rather than reducing funds, schools should be considering ways to increase
student participation in what could be one of the most essential aspects of student's education: sports" (Kalamazoo Gazette Staff). For an example,
athletics keep many men in school, especially 'borderline gang–bangers.' Coaches serve as an important role model for boys who do not have a father
figure in their lives. Jerelene Wells, principal of Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, observed and stated, "Minority young people.... particularly

Argumentative Essay On Friday Night Lights
The show Friday Night Lights gives viewers an inside look into the lives of high school football players of a small town in Texas. The show is
astonishing on many levels, from it's unique camera styles to the complex characters. Many people usually dismiss athletes as dull characters and some
think of sports as something pointless or shallow. The show disproves these thoughts by giving viewers a perspective into the lives of the players,
coaches, and fans of the Dillon Panthers football team. This show ultimately builds empathy for the lives of the football players in the show, which
helps in understanding real life athletes and their coaches. Coach Taylor is a major character in the show, he embodies what a good coach and husband

This made the show feel more real and therefore gets the audience more into what happens in the show. The close–ups are very important, they reveal a
lot of what's going on and often are symbolic. A good example of this can be seen in season 1 episodes 1 when Jason Street (Main quarterback) is
laying on the ground, facing up and not moving after having tackled a defensive player. As the medics rush to assist him the camera zooms into his eyes
which are blood shot red and reveal he's extremely scared. Then in shows a close up of his feet which aren't moving and reveal he might be paraplegic.
This is effective because it makes the audience feel what the character is feeling and almost makes one feel like they're there. What this show does is
show that theres more to football, the players, and the coaches than meets the eye. Through complex characters, the show builds empathy for these
individuals and possibly real life people. It also shows the copious factors that make a sport great. Complimented by film techniques such as the camera
angles, all these factors make the show

High School Football in Texas is Out of Control Essay
Abstract: High school football in the state of Texas has become out of control. The sport is no longer played for the sake of the school but rather has
become a Friday night ritual to these small towns in Texas. The players are no longer just high school kids inter acting in school sports but have now
become heroes to these small town communities. Communities simply no longer support their local high school team but rally in pride of their
hometown rivalry against another team. School administrators and coaches no longer are teachers and mentors for the kids but are the equivalent to
what in professional football are team owners and "real coaches". Parents have become agents and sacrifice their jobs and homes so that their child ...

According to many, the game has become out of control in Texas, but continues to draw crowds in by the thousands. For as long as most of us can
remember, academics and sports have co–existed in the school system. Sports should support the academic program. It should supplement learning,
team playing and enhance life skills. It should be fun, not life–threatening, is should be part of life, not your whole life. In Texas, academics gets swept
aside in favor of football, parents quit their jobs and uproot the family in search of better football schools, and students and players alike spend most of
their high school years in a football–crazed state of mind.
Over seventy thousand dollars was spent in 1990 for the Permian Panthers travel budget. The business community is one of the main reasons this figure
is so high, every year the community fights for who will get certain pages in the Permian program booklets that are sold at each game. The programs
generate over fifty thousand dollars and are about thirty to forty pages long. In 1988 the Permian yearbook alone generated over twenty thousand
dollars "...virtually every lawyer, doctor, insurance firm, car dealer, restaurant, and oil field supply business in town had taken out an ad." (Bissinger 40)
The yearbook ran two hundred and twenty four pages and had over five hundred business ads. Every year that the Panthers would go to state
competition every business would completely decorate their

10 Levels Of Horsemanship By Kim Meagher Relationship
In 1995, Kim Meagher, owner of the Beastro Gallery in Prescott, AZ, and Wildhorse Ranch Rescue in Gilbert, AZ, had a dream. The single mother of
two and her daughters loved horses and decided they wanted one of their own. Working for Intel at the time, Meagher felt that a horse would be a good
way to teach her daughters how to handle responsibility and would be a great companion for the girls and her. Growing up in urban Michigan, Meagher
knew nothing about horses, but she was determined to learn what it took.
So, ignoring skepticism from friends and family, Meagher started reading Pat Parelli's 10 Levels of Horsemanship and proceeded to purchase a one and
a quarter acre ranch in Gilbert. The property included a barn with eleven stalls ready and waiting to be filled. In search of her first horse, Meagher

However, one glitch she ran into was the fact that she had to make the weekly trip to Prescott, but there was no one to care for Gabriel. So Meagher did
what she needed to do. She took Gabriel to Prescott with her, allowing him to sleep bed with her at night. Additionally, with the use of the dog door,

Bissinger's Friday Night Lights is a nonfiction novel about a small high school football team in Odessa, Texas. It was focused during the year of 1988;
Permian High School was desegregated a few years earlier. Odessa came together to support the football team every week no matter what. However,
the town itself was riddled in prejudice towards those of different race. Bissinger uses this novel to put emphasis on the portrayal of racism in a small

Before the time of integration, Odessa was split into two. There was a white and a minority community which similar to the Berlin Wall had "railroad
tracks that inevitably ran through the heart of town" (Bissinger, 91). The famous phrase "from the wrong side of the railroad tracks" describes the
minority community. The black population lived in poverty, while the write population enjoyed their riches. However, once desegregation came into
Odessa, the minorities that could afford it, moved into the rich neighborhoods and soon everything was integrated. It, nonetheless, was not perfect,
racism still ran deep within their roots, but it was progress. In the beginning of the 1988 football season, Boobie Miles suffered from a severe ACL
injury, which forced him to quit playing this season. As a result, his assistant coach automatically thinks poorly of Boobie, believing he is a quitter
because he is no longer a star. He then compares Boobie to a "lame horse," who needs to be "shot" because he can no longer perform (Bissinger, 284).
This causes a lot of problems for Boobie but luckily his uncle, LV, is there to support him. Bissinger describes many conflicts between the different
races to explore the prejudice and racist thinking of this

Analysis Of Friday Night Lights By H. G. Bissinger
Relationships , character, teamwork are all things you learn and build through playing the game of football and winning doesn't teach those things. The
grueling practices, the long hours of film, the adrenaline of games is what builds character and forms unbreakable relationships between players. In
Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger, Permian doesn't care about any of that. They care about winning and nothing else. Permian fans don't care if
Coach Gaines is making the kids better people or treating them like dogs, as long as Gaines is winning he can do whatever he likes. Making winning
everything puts unneeded pressure on high school athletes, causing them to hurt themselves and others instead of building themselves up.

pressure. It is a game where kids can hang out and have fun with their friends. It doesn't and it shouldn't be life or death over one game, for the players

Friday Night Lights Movie Review Essay
The movie "Friday Night Lights" is based on a book by author H.G. Bissinger. It takes place at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas in 1988 when
tension between races was still strong in some areas of the south. There is a focus in some areas of the film having to do with the racial tension and
ongoing conflict between the student body and the city as a whole. Even though desegregation had happened by the time the book was written and the
film was made, schools sometimes were still racially divided. I also felt the movie showed how this football program exploited their black athletes. Of
interest to me was, the following of two of the main football players who are black. Boobie Miles and Ivory Christian. They are as well respected as
their white equivalents on the football field but, it illustrates how attitudes change when the players walk off the field. The movie touches on the many
controversial subjects like, racism, hypocrisy, and failure where as the book is extremely socially–oriented, and centered primarily on racial issues and
educational priorities. The film touches on these issues, but, as I wrote, it is not the focal point of the movie. It appears that some of the scenes in the
movie were actually filmed in the football stadium the Panther's played yet, other home games looked as if they had chosen another Texas stadium to
film. Football is huge in Texas. While researching the truthfulness of the movie, I came to find that the local affiliate pre–empted a Major

Friday Night Lights Sparknotes
Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, and A Dream is a 1990 non–fiction novel wrote by H.G. Bissinger. The story chronicles the pressures and
expectations of the Permian Panthers football team in socially divided Odessa, Texas. Throughout the story, challenges are presented with each of the
protagonists: James "Boobie" Miles, Mike Winchell, Don Billingsley, Gary Gaines, Brian Chavez, and Ivory Christian. The book begins with the author
talking about his motivation to write the book. Also the author discusses the importance of Permian's game against Midland Lee High School (their
arch–rivals). Tensions were rising greatly, and by the end of the game, star tailback Boobie Miles quits the team and Permian lost 22–21, leaving them
in a three–way tie, with only two spots open in the 5A playoffs.
The initial chapters discuss the town of Odessa and its history, unique facts, its people, etc. One of the major topics discussed is the demographics of the
town's two high schools: Odessa and Permian high school. Also, other social issues such as crime rate, murder rate, and segregation (which is also
dedicated to chapter five). Multiple chapters in the book discussed in depth about characters Boobie Miles, Mike Winchell, and Ivory Christian. Each of
these players had varying backgrounds, and motivations about why they played football. These chapters also discuss the lives of players off of the field,
and how the academics at Permian were backseat to their powerhouse football team.

High School Football Athletes Essay
The mindset that society thrusts upon most high school athletes can take away from academics and other opportunities they may have for their future.
For many high school football athletes, they are primarily focused on one thing throughout their high school years: sports. Evidence 1: In towns such as

sports with academics. "It was a phenomenon that Trapper had seen dozens of times before, a kid so caught up in it all that there was no room for

When they focus too much on football or whatever sport they are playing, than their grades falter, and they lose their chance to get a solid degree. One
student that broke the trap that high school athletes fall into is Brian Chavez, a student at Permian High School in Friday Night Lights. "As the number–
one student in his class, his aspirations extended far beyond the glimmer of expectation that a Texas school, any Texas school, might be willing to give
him a football scholarship. He had set his sights differently, zeroing in on a target that seemed incomprehensible to his family, his friends, just about
everyone. He wanted to go to Harvard" (Bissinger 13). Chavez is essentially the antithesis of all his peers and classmates; instead of making football
the high point of his entire life, he values his future and education over the present glory of football. Despite being pressured into setting aside his
future dreams in order to better the team, he does not fall into the trap his society had set for him. Chavez ended up enjoying Permien football as well as
going to Harvard, so he is the prime example of how high school athletes should carry themselves. But unfortunately, it is extremely tough for most

Friday Night Lights: Structure Functional Theory Essay
Functionalism views society as the stability and assimilation of a range of forces that function within it. While society is a separate entity with a life of
its own, there are individual elements contributing to that stability. Functionalism as a sociological theory emphasizes assimilation rather than the
dissociation of society. Therefore, the society is seen as a whole that is compromised of parts which give one another their identity and their function.
The part, whether that is education, such as a school, or sports, such as a football team, operates in relation to the other parts, and cannot be entirely
understood in isolation from the other parts. All the parts are interrelated, and when there is a disturbance in any one of the ... Show more content on

The individuals in Odessa have "shared values or generally accepted standards of desirability" (Wallace and Wolf 18) regarding their feelings of high
school football and the meaning of coming together as a town in support for the team. Hence the values that are placed on football, solidarity, and
winning the theory of functionalism can be seen and applied in Friday Night Lights. In order to live up to the reputation of the town and peers, the
Permian Panthers and the coaches set goals so that they will have a winning season. The goal that is set is to win the state championship and nothing,
including injury will change that goal. This occurs when Boobie Miles, the star running back, chooses to play in spite of a torn ALC, rather than
yielding to the unimaginable pain that he is in. The team imposed a structure, which establishes the goals and values of the team, therefore reinforcing
the team's solidarity to winning the championship not only for them but for the town. In spite of the team and coaches setting the goal, Boobie's injury
while playing against Midland, sidelines him for the rest of the season. It is at this junction in the movie that we the injury of one player affecting the
entire team, which leads to the break–down of the whole community. Change is seen within the team's attitudes and new ways to play without their star
running back. In addition, the desire to win changes the coaching

Friday Night Lights, By Steven Hilliard Stern
In the book, Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger depicts the culture of a small town called Odessa where economic instability, racial prejudice, sexism,
and poverty are common. The one thing this town can truly hang onto is the local high school football team. In Miracle on Ice, directed by Steven
Hilliard Stern, the head coach of the American Olympic Hockey Team Herb Brooks is determined to gather up an American team to beat the Russians
in their own game, ice hockey. In both works, unity is an important theme that is reached through different means. In Miracle the elements of
socioeconomic class and race were not a factor in unifying the team. While in Friday Night Lights those factors were extremely important throughout
the context of what unity means in the story. The unity in Miracle is more constructive because it was more easily achieved because it was more well
defined, it was simply to defeat the Russians and bring glory and pride to the nation. Whereas in Odessa the mission was more unclear. In a time where
America was facing a "Crisis in Confidence" the U.S. Olympic Hockey brought the nation together. Although Permian football was effective in
unifying and giving hope to many of its citizens, the football culture was also used to create division among different races and social classes ,and
therefore was destructive.
Representative sports is a common theme in both works which contributes to the unity within both communities. In Sports Unites and Sports Divides,

Friday Night Lights Book Report

  • 1. Friday Night Lights Book Report Friday Night Lights is a non–fictional book written by Harry Gerard Bissinger III. Bissinger wrote the book in 1990. Chris Weeden wrote that Bissinger said, "It's my best book, my most ambitious book, but I knew halfway through it was going to have a very limited audience" (2006). Bissinger was in search of a town controlled solely by sports. Therefore, this search led him to the Permian High School in Odessa, Texas (the setting for the novel). Friday Night Lights shows how a struggling town uses its beloved high school football team to overcome racial problems, political disagreements, and an unprosperous economy. The Permian High School football team and the superstars of the team give the struggling community something to believe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At last, the chance to go to the state championship came down to a 4th and 6 for the Permian High School with ten seconds left. A touchdown would win the game for the Permian football team; however, an incomplete pass would end the game in a devastating matter. The dedicated followers of Permian Football told the result of the play with pure silence opposed to the eruption of the other team. The Permian High School football team lost the semi–finals and were taunted with "NO MO' MOJO, MOJO NO MO!" (Bissinger, 1990, p. 334) from the opposing fans. The valiant superstars, team, and town's dream had fallen just short for that season. The well–known player names of Boobie, Winchell, Mcdougal, Billingsley, Chavez, and Christian were taken off the depth chart wall following game; which will soon be replaced by the future of Permian Football. Nevertheless, a life lesson is taught to each player and fan, life goes on... Friday Night Lights written by Harry Gerard Bissinger is a must read for any sports avid reader. Bissinger illustrates the lesson that life goes on through a treasured football team surrounded by a troublesome community. Bissinger is also able to show how a local high school sports team influences the activities that happen in the town. In the grand scheme of things, a local high school football team should not be able to unite and inspire a community to continue on despite the hardships, but the Permian Football team was not your average high school ... So what if I lost my temper and was about to go ape shit on the rest of my crew? All's I wanted to was get back at sonic and those damn freedom fighters and now here I am, barely feeling like myself let alone an anti–sonic in jail without any of my other team mates. I didn't mind picking a fight with that dude, I'd figure I'd give him a run for his money, but even in my super form I lost, and it felt like it didn't take much either. A recurring theme in the recent sports culture is the mistakes of popular athletes. Sports culture has become a huge aspect of our society. As more time passes, sports become more influential in our communities. It has come to the point where everyone tunes in or hears about the mishaps of our athletic role model and their public apologies. It seems like every week there is another tragedy in sports, in the sense that another star athlete has potentially ruined his career. Every month there are athletes pissing their opportunities away. And people are always drooling to see what they have to say about it, if they are sorry or that they denial. Although it is getting more popular now, forms of apologia have been involved in sports ever since sports became popular. The earliest major form of athletic apologia was the Black Sox scandal. The Black Sox Scandal has become huge deal in Baseball and all of the major sports. Allegedly, the World Series of 1919 were fixed by the players of the Chicago White Sox. Everything in my life had been improving! Darry and I rarely fought, instead of tension, there was a connection. Even though he never said it, I could tell he felt it too. I was still thinking about Johnny a ton (it had been 7 weeks since he had died), but I had accepted that he wasn 't with us physically. I kept him in my heart, and instead of grieving, I remembered all of our fun times together. Moving on, school was better than ever. After I turned in my essay, it made its way up to the school board. They sent a copy home with each kid, so the parents would know what really happened. The truth was revealed, and I made some good buddies, who didn 't care if I was a Greaser, or a Soc, or a middle man. My grades were back to straight A's and Darry was as proud as can be. I had to quit track, in order to make time for football. I'm was and still am the starting running back on my high school football team, and Darry had just quit one of his jobs, when he got offered the position of head coach. He was still fixing roofs, and coaching football at the same time. Darry was happy, he had found a way to follow his dreams. That was last month. By the end of this week, our lives had changed! Jack Johnson's Role In The Civil Rights Movement While at Dartmouth, although it was a period of social change, racial tensions were still high when he arrived on campus along with the first "substantial group of African American males" (Hoover and Eschenbach). Bogan believed that they were "pioneers of their race" (Bogan). Although, Dartmouth held a reputation for being welcoming to black men, the Civil Rights Movement was "a time of heightened consciousness [towards race]," so they banded together to form their own community (Hoover and Eschenbach). While Bogan did believe that sports were a way to rise above low socioeconomic status, he, unlike many others, realized that "education was the thing that was going to allow [him] to achieve a measure of success and financial independence" (Hoover ... He hoped that like his inspiration, Jack Johnson, he could also succeed as a "black athlete in the white–dominated athletic world" (Carroll 26 – 28). Johnson had overcome racial boundaries to become the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, setting an example and sending a message to young Fritz Pollard–that it was possible for black men to succeed in athletics (Carroll 27–28). This propelled Pollard forward, allowing him to flourish as he became an excellent high school football player, and went on to play for Brown University (Carroll 30). At this time, Brown's racial climate was tense, so integrating into the team as an equal proved to be a challenge, but "once [his teammates] saw his talent, he won them over... [so] they had his back no matter what" (Waleik). Unfortunately, it wasn't as easy to win over the rest of the football community, as he was often the target of "verbal and physical abuse...even death threats," on and off the field (Waleik). Despite this, Pollard still became tremendously successful, playing and coaching for the NFL after college, in addition to being inducted into the Brown Athletics Hall of Fame (1971), and finally the Professional Football Hall of Fame (2005), an honor for which he had been passed over 40 times prior (Hoover and Eschenbach). Pollard set an example, like the one Jack Johnson set for him, for the many young black athletes that would come after him, like J. Mayo William '21, who faced major adversity and poverty yet still played on Brown's football team and later went on to play in the NFL (Hoover and Eschenbach). Although, Pollard is one of ... Remember The Titans Film Analysis EXS 496 Final Project Participation in youth sports can be extremely beneficial to children – the ability to form lasting friendships, be an active member of a team, and development of physical skills and abilities. However, youth sports can be controversial, and often political. Many coaches of youth sports participate in favoritism of their players or use dictator–like coaching methods to yield the result they desire. Additionally, the risk of injury, especially due to specialization at a young age, is a major concern for child athletes. After observing a youth basketball game, watching several sports–related movies, and learning a vast amount of information regarding sports in American culture, I have come to the conclusion that participation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is autocratic coaching, democratic coaching, and holistic coaching methods. Autocratic coaching is when the coach tells the players what to do and expects them to do exactly that or face consequences – Coaches Herb Brooks and Herman Boone fall under this category. Brooks and Boone are both autocratic because they run their team like a dictatorship and expect immediate results from their players. While Brooks and Boone use force to get their results, this does not mean that they do not have compassion for their players. Conversely, Coach Joe embodies the holistic method to coaching; he takes the time to listen to Jess's concerns, needs, and opinions. Joe takes the time to ensure that Jess is confident in her abilities as a football player and in result, raises her self–esteem significantly. Additionally, I believe that Coach Gary Gaines represents the democratic style of coaching. Gaines works with his players, even though demanding at times, to help them improve and become better athletes. Gaines is able to connect to his players as not only a coach, but also as a father ... • 25. A Short Story : A Story? James told him they were negative. Edwin dropped him off at the corner of Karen's house. James got out the car and said he'd wait until she returned home. "Man are you're crazy, there are a lot of "sliders" you can get some play from." said Edwin "I'm not about that no more, man it's time that I become focused in my life." "All right call me if you change your mind." "Bet it up man." Then James walked over to the park across from Karen's house. Edwin drove off Karen arrived home around three o'clock p.m. She poured herself a drink of rum and coke and sat down on the couch. The drink relaxed her, she decided to take a hot bather and finish unwinding. No sooner had she got out the tub and put her robe on, there was a hard knock at door. Once she reached the living room she yelled, "Who is it?" The voice on the other side said, the newspaper man." "I don't want to subscribe to the paper", Karen said." "If you just give me a minute of your time mam, I might be able to change your mind" the voice yelled back. Karen became pissed, who in the hell did this sales man think he was. I made up my mind, she thought to herself. She snatched the door open and went to read this salesman, when her eyes nearly popped out, at the sight of James. "Can I have a chance to change your mind miss," he said. "Of course, how did you find out my address," she asked? "I have my ways. Are you going to invite me in, he asked? They called it "the American version of the Berlin Wall – the railroad tracks that inevitably ran through the heart of town" (Bissinger 91). The tracks are the symbol of the barrier, tension, and attitude that stand between the two races. To the Odessan whites, African Americans are often considered extraneous, with few hopes and dreams to follow. It is also a common part of everyday language to blurt out the word "nigger," without ever categorizing it in a racist context. To escape the predisposed perception, the football stadium, where the night lights shine, is the solitary premises where blacks accepted as an identity, as well ... Accordingly, Bissinger shows the readers how Blacks are viewed: "Just do to him what a trainer did to a horse...shoot him to put him out of the misery of life that no longer had any value" (Bissinger 67). The imagery illustrates here depicts an oppression tone which translates to the fact that Blacks athletes are solely exploited until they have reach their point of exhaustion. In sum, Bissinger is implying that African American are only accepted in the realm of Odessa football because they are physically capable of bringing victory to the game. However, when black athletes are seen as no longer useful in the playing field, the Permian whites automatically omit them from the hierarchy. Laurence Hurd, an African American Church of Christ minister, compared this prejudice to the period of slavery: "Today, instead of the cotton field, it's the sports arena" (Bissinger 109). Through the dialogue of Hurd, the reader can clearly see that this comparison reflects the antebellum era, in which labor oppression as well as unfair discrimination were at its prime against people of color. For that matter, Hurd is essentially highlighting the perpetuation of blacks' exploitation, specifying the continuous prejudice thoughts from the White society. • 45. The Role Of Football In H. G. Bissinger's Friday Night Lights For many people, football is not just a sport. The book Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger is set in Odessa, Texas where thousands of people would line up to buy tickets for the Permian Panthers' football games, not because they enjoyed watching football, but because of the hope and inspiration that resonated throughout the field during a game. Even the players were able to recognize this feeling of invincibility because "whatever they fantasized about, it all seemed possible that day" when they were playing football (24). Football becomes an outlet for the fans that draws the attention away from the complexities of their lives and directs it towards a game that promotes innocence and hope for them. One of the main reasons people in Odessa were always so crazy about football was because they needed an escape from the complications in their everyday lives. Odessa was considered a boom–and–bust oil town, where sometimes the town was prosperous and produced a plentiful amount of oil while at other times it experienced a decline in resources, which could cause a large amount of unemployment for the town. This made Odessa a "transient town, a place to come to and make money when the boom was on and then get as far away from as possible with the inevitable setting in of the bust" (29). Because of this uncertainty in the economy, many people were not doing as well as they might have been doing in another town, but despite this, they did not move away for one common reason: the Permian Panthers. Friday Night Lights, a book by H.G. Bissinger, is set in Odessa, a small town located in Texas, where football is revered by the entire town. In Friday Night Lights, the players spend their entire lives training to be successful because sports are all they have to look forward to. During the final game of the season to make it to state, Ronnie Beavers told his team, "This is the last minute of your life" (326). Beavers quote shows the importance of the moment. If Permian does not win the game, they have nothing to look forward to in their future. This semi–final game is "much more than a game" for Permian. What Beaver is saying is ridiculous, the Permian players act like Football will determine their future. By following the players and the town, Bissinger is able to show readers how important sports are in Odessa. Bissinger notes how it was "obvious" that the students of Permian hold the town on their shoulders (XIV). By following the story of the American small town, including many personal anecdotes, Bissinger shows the effect that sports have in Odessa. Friday Night Lights supports Lapham's claim that games represent much more than a game. It is not merely a game but a way of life. Permian players eat, breathe, and live football. Their lives are centralized around one thing: Football. Bissinger describes the town when he states, "If you went to their homes, you might find black toilet seats, or black seat cushions, or black phone book covers, or black paper plates, or black clocks, or black felt on their pool tables" (39). • 61. The Importance Of Football In Friday Night Lights Within sports, pressure is always there; you have to learn to deal with it. H. G. Bissinger's book, Friday Night Lights, hones in on the football team the Permian Panthers of Odessa. Through this focus on the team, one can see how football is an integral part of the town thriving, maintaining its hopes and dreams. Despite the racial and social divide within the community, those Friday night games become a place where dreams may be made possible. In this way, sports, specifically football, not only have an impact on the players but the community as well. Within the novel, one can see how athletics, specifically football, holds more importance than education for the town of Odessa. Because of this, players on the team start to be treated differently, like men rather than teenagers. In which, players become improperly prepared for the future and tend to only make it out of Odessa through athletic ability alone. As for one of the players, he learns the hard way the effects of such emphasis on athletics over education: "I've got no idea what I want to do. I've got no idea what school I want to go to. My SAT won't be worth a shit. And no football school wants me." (Bissinger, Epilogue) This highlights sports in society, as well as the four agents of socialization due to parental and educational impacts. Because of this, players follow a path that has been shaped for them rather than shaping their own path, causing future difficulties. For the case of Permian Panther players, ... Friday Night Lights : A Recurring Theme Marcos Vieira Filho Due: March 31, 2015 Friday Night Lights Book Essay Racism: A Recurring Theme in Friday Night Lights The surprisingly non–fiction novel, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, was written by H. G. Bissinger in 1990. The story follows the Permian High School Panthers football team of 1998. The setting takes place in the town of Odessa, Texas. Bissinger describes this town as, "the setting for this book, but it could be anyplace in this vast land where, on a Friday night, a set of spindly stadium lights rises to the heavens to so powerfully, and so briefly, ignite the darkness." (16). It highlights the teams attempt at a Texas state championship with plenty of distractions and obstacles along the way. The main barrier for players and staff of Permian High was racism. Some may find it hard to believe but in the town of Odessa, desegregation was simply a "suggestion" and the community refused to accept the fact that white and blacks are equal. It was not until the early eighties that Odessa desegregated. To better understand the theme of racism throughout the novel towards African American players and staff of Permian High, a school made up of almost ninety percent minorities, one must understand the background on how this book came about. The other two schools were Caucasian and almost entirely white schools. While at Harvard, Bissinger had an idea to write a book that was focused on the impact that high school football had on American culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 81. Literary Analysis Of Friday Night Lights "Friday Night Lights" is a true story about a run–down town in Texas called Odessa. There are two high schools in Odessa, Odessa High School and Permian High School. The "slums" of the town were usually where the minorities lived, compared to the nicer parts of the town where the whites lived. When the two schools were combined, a black politician started a movement to s bring together the minorities and whites. The minority school was shut down (which is not what was intended) and the better athletes were sent to Permian High and the rest were sent to Odessa High. The third and final use of personification includes, "It was in Odessa that I found those Friday night lights, and they burned with more intensity than I had ever imagined." (Bessinger Preface) This compares the "burning of the lights" to that of something related to a fire, electricity, etc. Figure of speech is defined as a word or phrase that has a meaning other than the literal meaning. The first example in this novel includes, "But he had held up under the physical punishment, two, or three, or four tacklers driving into him on many of the plays, the risk always there that they would take a sweet–shot at his knee...a jolting twack that sounded like a head–on car collision." (Bessinger 2) This quote gives an example using the term "sounded like a head–on car collision" to exaggerate the sound of the hit that Boobie Miles took. Another quote example describes, "He felt good when he left the little white house that he lived in, where a green pickup truck sat in the bare, litter–strewn yard like a wrecked boat washed up on the shore." (Bessinger 3) This exaggerates the comparison of the yard of the house to a "washed up boat on shore" by giving you an image of a completely destroyed yard. "Just as competition is used to motivate people in a variety of educational and business settings, it can be used to motivate your athletes in sport situations as well" (Burton) However, negative outcomes are not always the case. Athletics teaches essentials children need to be exposed to at a young age. Playing sports helps students to stay fit, stay out of trouble, and keep their grades up. If budgets cut athletics, it would do more harm than good. Reducing funding for athletics would negatively impact the overall student performance of academics and life lessons athletics teach. Supporting high school athletics are critical to the development of adolescence. Anyone can be book smart, but street smart comes from sports. Academics are important, but to become a well–rounded student sports are critical. Instead of getting rid of something that is expensive, schools should be putting more effort into fundraising for it. "Rather than reducing funds, schools should be considering ways to increase student participation in what could be one of the most essential aspects of student's education: sports" (Kalamazoo Gazette Staff). For an example, athletics keep many men in school, especially 'borderline gang–bangers.' Coaches serve as an important role model for boys who do not have a father figure in their lives. According to many, the game has become out of control in Texas, but continues to draw crowds in by the thousands. For as long as most of us can remember, academics and sports have co–existed in the school system. Sports should support the academic program. It should supplement learning, team playing and enhance life skills. It should be fun, not life–threatening, is should be part of life, not your whole life. In Texas, academics gets swept aside in favor of football, parents quit their jobs and uproot the family in search of better football schools, and students and players alike spend most of their high school years in a football–crazed state of mind. In 1988 the Permian yearbook alone generated over twenty thousand dollars "...virtually every lawyer, doctor, insurance firm, car dealer, restaurant, and oil field supply business in town had taken out an ad." The single mother of two and her daughters loved horses and decided they wanted one of their own. Working for Intel at the time, Meagher felt that a horse would be a good way to teach her daughters how to handle responsibility and would be a great companion for the girls and her. Growing up in urban Michigan, Meagher knew nothing about horses, but she was determined to learn what it took. So, ignoring skepticism from friends and family, Meagher started reading Pat Parelli's 10 Levels of Horsemanship and proceeded to purchase a one and a quarter acre ranch in Gilbert. The property included a barn with eleven stalls ready and waiting to be filled. In search of her first horse, Meagher advertised in the local newspaper and acquired her initial equine resident which was named Brownie. Though the Meaghers knew little about caring for horses at that time, they were getting a lot of on–the–job training. The feeding, brushing, mucking, and other required chores ... Being just a few days old, Gabriel required feeding on an almost hourly basis. Meagher literally took Gabriel into her home to help him survive and thrive. However, one glitch she ran into was the fact that she had to make the weekly trip to Prescott, but there was no one to care for Gabriel. So Meagher did what she needed to do. • 101. Examples Of Stereotypes In Friday Night Lights The stadium lights blind everyone. Crowds of people of all color cheering as the Pepettes stand at the bottom of the bleachers. They shout enthusiastic cheers with bright smiles as the Permian Panthers run in. This was the peak of all of Odessa's Friday night. This was Friday Night Lights. H.G Bissinger's Friday Night Lights is a nonfiction novel about a small high school football team in Odessa, Texas. It was focused during the year of 1988; Permian High School was desegregated a few years earlier. Odessa came together to support the football team every week no matter what. However, the town itself was riddled in prejudice towards those of different race. Bissinger uses this novel to put emphasis on the portrayal of racism in a small town ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before the time of integration, Odessa was split into two. There was a white and a minority community which similar to the Berlin Wall had "railroad tracks that inevitably ran through the heart of town" (Bissinger, 91). The famous phrase "from the wrong side of the railroad tracks" describes the minority community. The black population lived in poverty, while the write population enjoyed their riches. However, once desegregation came into Odessa, the minorities that could afford it, moved into the rich neighborhoods and soon everything was integrated. It, nonetheless, was not perfect, racism still ran deep within their roots, but it was progress. In the beginning of the 1988 football season, Boobie Miles suffered from a severe ACL injury, which forced him to quit playing this season. As a result, his assistant coach automatically thinks poorly of Boobie, believing he is a quitter because he is no longer a star. He then compares Boobie to a "lame horse," who needs to be "shot" because he can no longer perform (Bissinger, 284). This causes a lot of problems for Boobie but luckily his uncle, LV, is there to support him. Bissinger Relationships , character, teamwork are all things you learn and build through playing the game of football and winning doesn't teach those things. The grueling practices, the long hours of film, the adrenaline of games is what builds character and forms unbreakable relationships between players. In Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger, Permian doesn't care about any of that. They care about winning and nothing else. Permian fans don't care if Coach Gaines is making the kids better people or treating them like dogs, as long as Gaines is winning he can do whatever he likes. • 109. Friday Night Lights Movie Review Essay The movie "Friday Night Lights" is based on a book by author H.G. Bissinger. It takes place at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas in 1988 when tension between races was still strong in some areas of the south. There is a focus in some areas of the film having to do with the racial tension and ongoing conflict between the student body and the city as a whole. Even though desegregation had happened by the time the book was written and the film was made, schools sometimes were still racially divided. I also felt the movie showed how this football program exploited their black athletes. Of interest to me was, the following of two of the main football players who are black. Boobie Miles and Ivory Christian. They are as well respected as their white equivalents on the football field but, it illustrates how attitudes change when the players walk off the field. The movie touches on the many controversial subjects like, racism, hypocrisy, and failure where as the book is extremely socially–oriented, and centered primarily on racial issues and educational priorities. The film touches on these issues, but, as I wrote, it is not the focal point of the movie. It appears that some of the scenes in the movie were actually filmed in the football stadium the Panther's played yet, other home games looked as if they had chosen another Texas stadium to film. Football is huge in Texas. While researching the truthfulness of the movie, I came to find that the local affiliate pre–empted a Major ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 121. Friday Night Lights Sparknotes Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, and A Dream is a 1990 non–fiction novel wrote by H.G. Bissinger. The story chronicles the pressures and expectations of the Permian Panthers football team in socially divided Odessa, Texas. Throughout the story, challenges are presented with each of the protagonists: James "Boobie" Miles, Mike Winchell, Don Billingsley, Gary Gaines, Brian Chavez, and Ivory Christian. The book begins with the author talking about his motivation to write the book. Also the author discusses the importance of Permian's game against Midland Lee High School (their arch–rivals). Tensions were rising greatly, and by the end of the game, star tailback Boobie Miles quits the team and Permian lost 22–21, leaving them in a three–way tie, with only two spots open in the 5A playoffs. The initial chapters discuss the town of Odessa and its history, unique facts, its people, etc. One of the major topics discussed is the demographics of the town's two high schools: Odessa and Permian high school. Also, other social issues such as crime rate, murder rate, and segregation (which is also dedicated to chapter five). Multiple chapters in the book discussed in depth about characters Boobie Miles, Mike Winchell, and Ivory Christian. Each of these players had varying backgrounds, and motivations about why they played football. These chapters also discuss the lives of players off of the field, and how the academics at Permian were backseat to their powerhouse football team. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"The two other clubs talked to us about selling valentine grams at the same time; we decided that it was okay since Make–A–Wish's teddy bears looked different from ours and ABC^2 is donating to charity," revealed Chi– nese Club President Shian Hong. For many high school football athletes, they are primarily focused on one thing throughout their high school years: sports. When they focus too much on football or whatever sport they are playing, than their grades falter, and they lose their chance to get a solid degree. One student that broke the trap that high school athletes fall into is Brian Chavez, a student at Permian High School in Friday Night Lights. "As the number– one student in his class, his aspirations extended far beyond the glimmer of expectation that a Texas school, any Texas school, might be willing to give him a football scholarship. He had set his sights differently, zeroing in on a target that seemed incomprehensible to his family, his friends, just about everyone. He wanted to go to Harvard" (Bissinger 13). Chavez is essentially the antithesis of all his peers and classmates; instead of making football the high point of his entire life, he values his future and education over the present glory of football. Despite being pressured into setting aside his future dreams in order to better the team, he does not fall into the trap his society had set for him. Chavez ended up enjoying Permien football as well as going to Harvard, so he is the prime example of how high school athletes should carry themselves. While society is a separate entity with a life of its own, there are individual elements contributing to that stability. Functionalism as a sociological theory emphasizes assimilation rather than the dissociation of society. Therefore, the society is seen as a whole that is compromised of parts which give one another their identity and their function. The part, whether that is education, such as a school, or sports, such as a football team, operates in relation to the other parts, and cannot be entirely understood in isolation from the other parts. Hence the values that are placed on football, solidarity, and winning the theory of functionalism can be seen and applied in Friday Night Lights. In order to live up to the reputation of the town and peers, the Permian Panthers and the coaches set goals so that they will have a winning season. The goal that is set is to win the state championship and nothing, including injury will change that goal. This occurs when Boobie Miles, the star running back, chooses to play in spite of a torn ALC, rather than yielding to the unimaginable pain that he is in. The team imposed a structure, which establishes the goals and values of the team, therefore reinforcing the team's solidarity to winning the championship not only for them but for the town. In spite of the team and coaches setting the goal, Boobie's injury while playing against Midland, sidelines him for the rest of the season. It is at this junction in the movie that we the injury of one player affecting the entire team, which leads to the break–down of the whole community. • 153. Friday Night Lights, By Steven Hilliard Stern In the book, Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger depicts the culture of a small town called Odessa where economic instability, racial prejudice, sexism, and poverty are common. The one thing this town can truly hang onto is the local high school football team. In Miracle on Ice, directed by Steven Hilliard Stern, the head coach of the American Olympic Hockey Team Herb Brooks is determined to gather up an American team to beat the Russians in their own game, ice hockey. In both works, unity is an important theme that is reached through different means. In Miracle the elements of socioeconomic class and race were not a factor in unifying the team. While in Friday Night Lights those factors were extremely important throughout the context of what unity means in the story. The unity in Miracle is more constructive because it was more easily achieved because it was more well defined, it was simply to defeat the Russians and bring glory and pride to the nation. Whereas in Odessa the mission was more unclear. In a time where America was facing a "Crisis in Confidence" the U.S. Olympic Hockey brought the nation together. Although Permian football was effective in unifying and giving hope to many of its citizens, the football culture was also used to create division among different races and social classes ,and therefore was destructive. Representative sports is a common theme in both works which contributes to the unity within both communities. In Sports Unites and Sports Divides, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
