Subordinates tell superiors what they want to hear. Distortion leads to poor decisions, because
decision makers have incorrect information.
Organizational Insight 5.1: Pfizer s New Emerging Hierarchy
Through mergers and acquisitions, Pfizer s hierarchy had become too tall. They cut the number of
management layers between top scientists from 14 to seven and drastically reduced the number of
committees.
Q. How did Pfizer s structure contribute to its problems?
A. When organizations get too tall, they cannot respond as well or as quickly to the marketplace,
which is what happened to Pfizer. This was fixed by flattening the structure so that the organization
could respond better to the market.

Motivation Problems. The taller the organization, the less managerial authority and responsibility
there are. Tall hierarchies decrease motivation because managers, with less authority and
responsibility, are less motivated. In a flat structure, managers have more responsibility and are
more motivated. Accountability in a tall structure decreases, making it easy for managers to shirk
responsibility.
Bureaucratic Costs. Tall hierarchies have high bureaucratic costs; a

Assessing Corporate Culture (Walt Disney)
Assessing Corporate Culture
Whether you are an employee (Cast Member) or a visitor (Guest), it is easy to see that the
Corporate Culture of Walt Disney is one of magic, empowerment, and diversity. It is an
organization with a strong set of values and beliefs that motivates it s Cast Members toward one
specific goal, creating a magical experience for all guests who enter.
When entering the career home page for the Walt Disney Corporation it reads:
Welcome to DisneyCareers, We are the dreamers and doers; a cast of thousands committed to
making magic and making dreams a reality. Our people represent a broad spectrum of experience
and cultural heritage, and we want to add to this diverse wealth of talent ... Show more content on

Walt Disney has been making America s dreams come true for years. Through their success at
managing and motivating cast members and the need for other corporations to want this
information, Disney has developed the Disney Institute and Disney University where they provide
every part of their knowledge except brand management or strategic planning (Paton, 1997).
The organizational structure of Disney values the balance between work and life. Disney has
combined business programs with personal fulfillment courses and allows cast members to
bring family members to business workshops. Disney also empowers employees to think
creatively and once a year host a Gong Show (McGowan, 1997), in which any cast member can
pitch his or her idea. The top decision makers and CEOs all attend and at the end decide on a
winner. Many of the movies and attractions that are affiliated with Disney have come out of the
Gong Show. Disney has gone the extra step and developed a different language. Visitors to Walt
Disney World Resortand the Disney Institute are referred to as guests. Employees are called cast
members, whether they perform on stage or work behind the scenes, at whatever level. Each cast
member has to spend an afternoon as a Disney character and later share his or her experiences with
other cast members who are in training. All cast members learn three imperatives: Keep the park

Alternative Fuels Essay
UPS s alternative fuels fleet is in response to growing trends in government and environmental
policies along with scientific discoveries in clean energy. The government launched a National
Clean Fleets Partnership aimed at helping businesses incorporate vehicles that run on alternate
fuels. The public private partnership began a collaboration between the U.S. Department of
Energy and businesses such as UPS s. Over the years UPS s has tried different options to achieve
cost savings by using fuel efficient alternative vehicles dating back to the 1930 s. The first
alternative vehicle they started using was electric cars to deliver packages in New York City. These
electric cars could only reach 20 mph which was ideal in New York City,

With the 2004 discovery of a massive shale gas fields in the Marcellus Shale region of the United
States this has caused the price of liquefied natural gas to drop in price making it a competitive
choice to diesel. This information is giving UPS more options to alternative fuels at a price that the
company can afford and still make a profit. UPS continues to test and gather information on
alternative fuels that would be best for their business and the environment. It is important for
businesses such as UPS to stay on top of changes in the external environment so they can make the
best decisions for the business. Without the discovery of the shale gas fields UPS would not have
the options that they currently do. The business needs to continue to stay up to date with external
environment information to know which alternative fuel technologies will become central over
time. UPS will continue testing new technologies in order to determine which energy source will
have the greatest benefit to the business. Sustainability is economic development that generates
wealth and meets the needs of the current population while preserving society and the environment

Narrative Of A QuinceaГ±era
This is the story on how I embarrassed myself in front of many people at my quinceaГ±era. First
off, many people may or may not know what a quinceaГ±era is. It s a traditional mexican party that
a 15 year old girl celebrates, its meaning is it s a transformation from being a young girl to a
woman. This all began spring of last year. My familyand I began to plan my party. We searched for
decoration that corresponded to what color I chose for my party. It ended up being the color
pink, although it looked more of a coral. Around two weeks later we began to do decorations, by
this time the salon was already rented out and was ready to fill it with items and get everything
set up. For my decorations I had made a flower bowl with pink and white roses... Show more

I was up walking around everywhere and many people kept coming up to me asking for pictures
so that lasted around another two hours. So it was time, I had to prepare myself mentally
because there was more people than expected. I had the girls in a straight line and when the
music began they danced their way on to the stage. Soon as the song began to my part I danced
on to the stage with the other girls. Is was going pretty smoothly but the Dj we had messed up
the parts for the music so I had to guide the girls with me to make sure everything goes as
planned. The dance took around 5 8 minutes it was really short but we kind of expanded the time.
The guest clapped and began to continue to party, around three hours later we had the Father
daughter dance, it was really emotional for me because he was really proud of me because I was
becoming a young woman and how he would never forget the first time he held me in his arms. I
was just really happy to see him on my special day. Then I danced with my mom who also cried
and my godmother and my aunts and uncles, there was just a lot of dancing with my family

The And Ethnic Groups Of Nigeria

Nigeria

Nigeria
For my final project, I chose to research (Africa) Nigeria. Nigeria, Africa s most populous
country, is composed of more than 250 ethnic groups; the most populous and politically influential
are: Hausa and the Fulani 29%, Yoruba 21%, Igbo (Ibo) 18%, Ijaw 10%, Kanuri 4%, Ibibio 3.5%,
and Tiv 2.5%. British influence and control over what would become Nigeria and Africa s most
populous country grew through the 19th century. A series of constitutions after World War II
granted Nigeria greater autonomy. After independence in 1960, politics were marked by coups and
mostly military rule, until the death of a military head of state in 1998 allowed for a political
transition (CIA, 2012).
Nigeria s culture reflects and represents all of the multiple ethnic groups. In Nigeria there are over
521 languages and over 250 ethnic groups and dialects. Out of all the groups, there are four really
large groups. The four groups are Hausa and Fulani predominant from the north, Igbo predominant
from the southeast and Yoruba predominant from the southwest (en.wikipedia.org). Nigeria, a
country where they did not practice a particular religion. They believe in a God called Chineke or
Chukwu. This God was said that the creator was approached through many different deities and
spirits from objects, nature or people.

Using One-Stage Cluster Sampling
In cluster sampling, instead of selecting all the subjects from the entire population right off, the
researcher must take several steps in order to gather his or her sample population.
First, the researcher must select various groups or clusters, and then from each cluster, the
researcher begins to choose the individual subjects by either simple random or systematic random
sampling. The researcher can even opt to include the entire cluster and not just a subset from it
depending on the design study they have chosen.
For my particular study, I have chosen to use a simple random control trial, which is pretty
common for the testing of behavioral sciences. I have also chosen to use one stage cluster sample,
this sample includes all of the children with PTSD and severe forms of trauma that were picked
from all the randomly selected clusters in the sample set. I did this to keep my internal validity
high and avoid selection bias, as well as minimizing any other form of bias and threats to internal
validity by equalizing the conditions on all other influences except for the ... Show more content on

Wong Kar-Wai s Relationship with Genre
This essay will explore Wong Kar Wai s relationship with genre within the context of the Hong
Kong film industry, along with Wong s various international influences, in order to argue,
Chungking Express was a major turning point in his career in terms of his complex relationship
with various elements of filmgenre.
Contextualising genre within the Hong Kong film industry:
Of all the international film industries across the globe Hong Kong is certainly one that is
synonyms with genre cinema. Considering the commercial nature of its film industry, it seems
only appropriate that when discussing Hong Kong cinema as a whole, genre seems to be a
frequent and integral part of the conversation. The Hong Kong film industry was built to turn a
profit and has become the dominant figure in all of East Asian cinema, relying heavily on
exporting its films to Mainland China and Taiwan, as well as local box office sales. Ding Tzann
Lii describes this relationship as one of marginal imperialism and compares the Hong Kong
industries hold over East Asia to that of Hollywood s over the rest of the world. (1998: 125)
However, with such a large demand for product Hong Kong has struggled to produce enough films
each year to maintain its industries growth. Production rapidly became focused on making films
quickly, cheaply and with the intention of being sold easily. The industry became much like a
factory, producing films in an assembly line fashion, often pushing films into production without a

Pros And Cons Of Cyrus
In the mid first millennium BCE, numerous groups arose, each with a different set of
perspectives, worldviews, and attitudes: the Israelites, the Phoenicians, Neo Assyrians, Persians
and Greeks, and so on. For the Jews, they were held captive in Babylon, later returned to
Jerusalem by Cyrus, the King of the Persians. Therefore, according to the first article, Cyrus was
welcome within their society. These people were extremely religious, especially in regards to
Marduk, and they all felt the need to help build their temple in Jerusalem. Everyone wanted to
help for their beliefs and God, and gave gifts, money, and resources. Even the Greeks, who later
defeated the Persians, saw Cyrus as a model ruler (textbook 132). Even more so, according to the
Persian Customs article, most of the clans were made by Cyrus, and the rest, nomad tribes, heavily
depended on Cyrus tribes. The Greeks, meanwhile, had their own opinions on the Persians, seen
through Herodotuswords. He states that the Persians do not see the Gods, as they have no
temples, and instead offer sacrifices; almost as if they enjoy the killings. During this, the Persian
sacrificer does not pray to himself, but to all of the Persians, which illustrates how these people
truly cared about their empire, and had great respect for the King, also sacrificing to the sun, moon,
earth, wind instead of seeing the God itself (Persian Customs). The Greeks did not agree with the
Persians, and around this time had many conflicts.

Should High School Athletes Be Drug Tested Essay
Should High School Athletes be Drug Tested?
When it come to drugs now in 2016, there are many people around us that we don t know are using
them. Sports such as, tennis, soccer, basketball, football ,etc. are definitely competitive. There is an
absolute necessity for schools to include drug testing programs for the safety and fairness of their
students, but one of the problems schools face if the lack of funds.
Most children and teens have strive to be the best they can be and often look up at their
inspiration, who they aspire to be. And while most teen athletes decide to reach their goal through
hard work, time, and dedication, some decide to take a sort of easy way and turn to performance
enhancing drugs .
Throughout history many star athletes have died and had health issues as a result of performance
enhancing drugs , some who weren t aware of the health consequences, Such as a case in Nov 1,
2007, in which 52 German athletes were given anabolic steroids for 10 years without their
knowledge or consent that later caused health issues for them and their children. One fourth of the
athletes have some form of cancer and one third report thoughts or attempts of suicide. The risk of

could have the same consequences as the 52 Germans athletes had , which not only affected them,

American Voting Patterns, By Angus Campbell, Philip...
American voting patterns is often a topic studied by numerous people for a variety of reasons.
Whether it is to gain an advantage in an election or trying to predict the outcome of an election, the
study of American voters has always been researched. The American Voter Unabridged Edition, by
Angus Campbell, Philip Converse, Warren Miller, and Donald Stokes, is regarded as the model for
conducting voting research. The scope of the book is astounding, ranging from the political parties
to the psychology of individual voters, the book laid the foundation for further voting examination.
The objectives of the research project had a variety of aims. One was to understand the voting
decisions of the national electorate in the manner that transcends some of the specific elements of
historical circumstance. Within the primary motive for their research, they wished to find the
political impact of identification with social class and to find out the voters preferences based on
psychological determinants. There were numerous ways they could have conducted their research;
however, they stuck to a few parameters that they listed in the introduction to the book. First, the
book voting behavior that occurred in the United States alone. Second, they focused on the
presidential electionsand the electoral process. They included numerous factors, including the
human element, Voting choice is an act of individual human beings, and the collective decisions of

Antigone as a Tragic Hero Essay
Antigone as a tragic hero The debate over who is the tragic hero in Antigone is unanswered. The
belief that Antigone is the hero is a tough one. Antigone is widely thought of as the tragic hero of
the play bearing her name. She would seem to fit the part in light of the fact that she dies for doing
what she believes is right. She buries her brother without worrying what might happen to her.
Unlike Antigone, Ismene says And break the law, our death will be more shameful even then
theirs (pg.5 line 60). In Sophocle s Antigone, the characters show a variety of traits. However,
Antigone s life of aspiration, family of noble rank, and display of good mentality portray her as the
tragic heroof the story. A tragic hero has haughty,
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Antigone fulfills all three traits thoroughly in the story of Antigone. A tragic flaw plays a very
imperative part of a tragic hero. Tragic flaw simply means a character weakness. The most
common types of tragic flaws are unwarranted pride, ambition, and jealousy. Those who do
believe that Antigone was meant to be the true tragic hero argue against others who believe that
Creon deserves that honor. They say that the Gods were against Creon, and that he did not truly
love his country. His patriotism is to narrow and negative and his conception of justice is too
exclusive... to be dignified by the name of love for the state . These arguments, and many
others, make many people believe the Antigone is the rightful protagonist. Antigone tries to help
her brother without worrying about what will happen to her. She says, I intend to give my
brother burial. I ll be glad to die in the attempt, if it s a crime, then it s a crime that God
commands (she says in a different translation). Antigone says He has no right to keep me from
my own (pg.4 line 48). She was also punished for doing what was right. Her epiphany came,
hidden from the audience, before she hung herself. Creon, understanding his ignorance may lead
one to believe that he is the true protagonist. But, if you define the word protagonist you would
find that a protagonist is one who is a leader or supporter of a cause. Antigone is in support of her
own actions in the burial of her brother

The Era Of Andrew Jackson
Sedona Swanner History 1301 Mr. Spence November 10, 2015 The Era of Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States, elected in eighteen twenty
eight. Prior to his presidency Andrew Jackson was well known and favored for his success
against the British in the war of eighteen twelve. Upon election, Andrew Jackson became known
as the people s president gaining the majority of electoral votes over his opponent John quincy
Adams.Throughout his presidency many events occurred that would shape America as a
nation. During his time as President Andrew Jackson was both favored and hated by many
individuals. His actions pleased certain groups of people, but would also cause for a loss of
support amongst Americans. Jackson s legacy would leave behind a strong willed group of
supporters, known as the Democrat party, and the creation of opposed individuals known as the
Whig party as well. His presidency would be viewed as time of improvements to some, but to
others who strongly opposed his presidency, it would be seen as a time for unjust tariffs and
conflict. Jackson s presidency would be characterized by key events such as the Indian removal act,
the nullification crisis, and the dispute known as the war against the bank, that would alter the
nation forever. One of the many acts put into place during Andrew Jackson s time as president
includes the highly controversial Indian Removal Act. The Indian removal act was signed and put

The actors are dressed according to the time period in reference. However, the costumes tell a lot
about the character and its prerogatives. In the movie, we see Yu Shu Lien in a quite simple but
multi layered attire swiftly suggesting her master title. The first shot of her shows her in a
white garment and in all the other shots she dresses in similar but more neutral colors. She
evolves from being just a beautiful woman to having more responsibility and thus toning her
woman qualities to the down low. She quenches her woman attributes and thus renders quite
difficult her submission to her emotions and feelings. Master Li is quite simply dressed with an
ample kimono undermining his brilliant knowledge of Wudan. This contrast is due to the fact
that he abandons his title and takes on the very common role of a regular man. The most
interesting example here is the young Long. Her first appearance, which was during the day,
reveals a quite sophisticated lady dressed in rich clothes suggesting royalty. Later on in the
night, she hides in a ninja attire (a man attire) to commit a theft and exercise Wudan. Under the
sun she obeys the rules and let her wild rebellious desires free in the night. She aspires to a life, a
role that breaks the principles and rules of tradition. And even if she is entitled, she dares not show
it in public until much later where eventually there is breaking point. Here we see how solid the
boundaries created around a person by tradition hold strong no matter the person itself. Tradition

Clash Of Kings Symbolism
A Clash of Kings
Was there ever a war where only one side bled? (118) This perspicuous question was raised by
George R.R. Martin, an epic fantasy writer and author of the New York Times bestselling novel, A
Clash of Kings. I chose this novel because I appreciate merciless world building novels such as
Beowulf or Lord of the Rings. Moreover, this novel is the second of the legendary book series
known as A Song of Ice and Fire. This story takes place in a medieval setting with potential for an
endless amount of possibilities. The novel predominately focuses on a variety of families that all
share the common goal of sitting on the Iron Throne. The story is presented from nine separate
points of view, eight of them coming from characters with a royal background. Each character
has a remarkable in depth backstory and a unique reason for their placement in the War of the
Five Kings. The majority of the story occurs in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, where the
Lannisters and the Iron Throne are located. The other portions of the novel take place in Winterfell
with House Stark, Castle Black with Jon Snow, and Essos with Daenerys Targaryen. The novel
picks up immediately where its predecessor, A Game of Thrones, concluded with King Robert
Baratheon s death and the Lord of Winterfell, Eddard Stark s, execution. Accompanied by King
Baratheon and his Hand s death, the position of King was unsecure. Subsequently, rulers of
different origins rise up in an attempt to conquer the Seven

Ansel Adams Photographer and Artist Essay example
Ansel Adams photographer and artist
Until the 19th century most artwork was created in a two or three dimensional media. In
England, William Fox discovered a technique that allowed camera images to be captured on
paper. This medium has evolved since Fox s discovery in 1839 to a serious and viable form of art
today. Photography allows the artist to capture what he sees. The image produced is reality to the
artists eye, it can only be manipulated with light and angles.
The photograph is a very powerful medium. The French painter Paul Delaroche exclaimed upon
seeing an early photograph from now on, painting is dead! (Sayre, 2000). Many critics did not take
photography seriously as a legitimate art form until the 20th century. With... Show more content on

Adams decision to be a full time photographer changed the photographic visions of the west. He
spent his time in National parks photographing the immense beauty of nature in these national
treasures.
Adams formed a group with other San Francisco photographers in 1932 called f/64, referring to the
smallest aperture opening on a camera lens (Gray, 1994). The group concentrated on form and
texture. The group translated scale and detail into organic, sometimes abstract design (Jacobs, 1995).
In 1935, Adams published his first book, Making a Photograph. Six years later, his Zone System
was formulated. The Zone System introduced a way for the professional and amateur photographers
to determine and control the exposure and development of prints for maximum visual acuity
(Jacobs, 1995). The Zone System marked his first efforts at public education on photography.
Adams felt a sense of duty to share his knowledge of nature and photography. В…[Adams] was
master teacher as well as a master photographer (Schaefer, 1992). He wrote many books and taught
students his art. Adams technical ability in the darkroom was magical. He set the standard for black
and white printing. His discriminating taste and meticulously produced prints continue to amaze
current generations twenty five years after his death. Adams was an experimenter and a modernist
with his camera.

Case Study Of Roug Rough Cut Capacity Planning
1. INTRODUCTION
Consumer demand for a product can be fulfilled entirely in the master production schedule if
supported by production capacity according to production requirements. Master production
schedule can be easily realized if consumer demand is constant, but in fact companies often
experience fluctuations in the demand of consumers who tend to be unstable. Based on research

Characteristics Of Chinese Immigrants In America
Before World War II, the Chinese immigrants to the U.S had many characteristics. First, the Chinese
immigrants mainly came from mainland China, such as the Guangdong province. The Chinese

Guangdong province. The Guangdong province was close to coastal areas where Guangong people
could take the boasts and migrate to America. Also, Guangdong people was far away from the

Also, they were undesirable workers in America. Therefore, one of the characteristics of the
Chinese immigrants was that they were mainly male.
Besides the Page Law, the Chinese exclusion act of 1882 affected the characteristics of Chinese
immigrants the most. In 1882, Chinese people were excluded because they became a threat to
American society. Under the Chinese exclusion act, the number of Chinese was decreased and the
bachelor society was formed. The bachelor society was a reaction to the Chinese exclusion act and a
shelter for Chinese people to live in. A great example of bachelor society is Chinatown. Because of
the influence of the Chinese exclusion act of 1882, Chinese immigrants concentrated in Chinatown
and had special characteristics. In Chinatown, the first characteristic of the Chinese immigrants
were mostly men because Chinese women were excluded. Besides, most Chinese immigrants
formed split households in Chinatown because the Chinese exclusion act prohibited the Chinese
family unification and the interracial marriage between White and Chinese.
Second, the Chinese exclusion act of 1882 caused many illegal Chinese immigrants in America.

The Romantic Novels Of Jane Austen s Romantic Literature
Jane Austen, a Georgian era author, is best known for her romantic novels that criticize societal
traditions. Her upbringing and the support that she received from her family assisted her
development as a novelist. As she continued to create more literary pieces, Austen received more
recognition for her work and eventually became the renowned writer she is today.
Austen was born in Hampshire, England as the seventh child of Cassandra and George Austen.
Coming from a family of respectable community members, Austen grew up in an environment that
emphasized education and expressive reasoning. Her earliest form of education began when reading
from her father s library. There, Austen was encouraged by her father and began to develop her
creativity as an author. Austen eventually pursued a formal education when she and her older sister
Cassandra, one of her closest companions, were sent to boarding school. Both Jane and her sister s
formal education was abrupt, however, due to financial restrictions. After their formal education
came to a halt, the sisters returned to their home and resumed their studies. Jane continued to
expand her writing abilities through home based productions, which were common in the casual
environment of her family, and collections of personal stories. It is through these experiences that
Jane Austen resolved to become a formal writer.
Despite never marrying, Austen exhibits an extensive perspective on romance in her collection of
novels. Her literary works are comprised of satirical commentaries on society, as well as romantic
stories that involve unique characters. Eventually, Austen s romantic novels became popular among
the public, as seen with the immense success after her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility.
Her clever commentary and skilled writing ability attributed to acknowledgement as an author.
Following this success, Austen continued to gain acknowledgement from citizens and praise from
literary critics. Austen s reputation skyrocketed in the 20th century while she became accredited for
her masterful incorporation of realism elements into her stories (Augustyn). Furthermore, Austen
demonstrated a range of literary works with various tones. For instance, Austen s

The Rise Of The Mid Size Farmer Essay
In an increasingly globalized world, productivity and efficiency is crucial to the survival of
agricultural businesses. Today, a smaller number of farms produce an increasingly larger amount
of produce. Since 1920, the average farm size has grown over 300 percent (Ikred). Productivity is
at an all time high, and in recent years the U.S. has had a tremendous increase in international
agricultural trade (Brown, 2011, p. 168). For consumers around the world, this means cheaper,
more accessible food, which is crucial for a rising world populationwith limited resources.
However, the mid size farmer is diminishing in number. We will look at what trends are causing the
downfall of the mid size farmer. What this means for rural communities, and whether or not these
trends are inevitable.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 3.2 million farmers operate the nation s
2.1 million farms. Although only 2 percent of the farms in America are operated by large
corporations (2012 Census Highlights), they produce a considerable amount of the nation s food
supply. Large scale operation enables these major corporations to cut production cost, allowing
these businesses to sell their product a lower market price. These low prices make it very difficult
for smaller farm operations to compete. Inability to compete causes many traditional farmers and
farm families to look for additional means of income, or even completely different means of
employment.
Another trend driving

discrimination from her friends, family, and colleagues alike. The filmwants the audience to view

Rather than a woman fighting for a lifelong dream, we see an emotional woman going through a
rough break up and dealing with it through drastic measures. This discrepancy completely
disparages the idea of her being a feminist icon. It is true that Elle is no longer motivated by
Warner in any way by the end of the movie, indicating that she may have grown and seen the
errors of her ways, but at no point in the entire film is it directly stated or even implied that Elle
has a passion or interest in the study of law. Even if she truly has readjusted her perspective by
the end of the film, it comes too late to have any sort of impact, as our impressions of Elle have
already been made. Her actions don t send the message of empowerment to achieve one s dreams
through hard work and passion, but rather to achieve happiness through obtaining the approval of
a man. Further damaging the view of Elle as a feminist icon is the fact that she consistently
reinforces harmful stereotypes about women. Elle is clearly meant to be presented as a sorority
stereotype, but rather than overcoming and breaking free from it, she proves it to be true time and
time again. Firstly, Elle reinforces the idea that women are overly emotional and quickly
disheartened. In the very first scene of the movie, Elle is dumped by Warner and proceeds to have
an emotional breakdown, crying and shrieking loudly in a public setting. This is further reinforced

Research Paper On Luminol
How does it work and what is the science behind it?
Luminol is a chemical that helps crime investigator and detectives find blood or traces of blood
not visible in a crime scene. The way it works is, after you spray the reagent in the suspected area,
it illuminates a bright blue that can be seen in the dark. The science behind this blood detection
technique is that luminol reacts with iron found in hemoglobin, thus making invisible or suspected
bloodshed visible to the crime investigator (How Does...).
The main part of this reaction and also the way light is produced is when the iron in the blood
oxidizes with luminol, resulting in an electronically charged particle, known as 3 amino phthalate,
which then produces the blue light that we see (Micheal Seery).
Is luminol successful in detecting blood compared to other chemicals that do the same thing? What
are its limitations?
Luminol: Strengths
a)Since it comes in a spray bottle, you can quickly spray over large areas effortlessly.
b)The surfaces or articles that have been sprayed with Luminol are not corroded or stained in any
way. This is especially important when investigators want to keep the article or photograph the
surface as proof of evidence.

Examples Of Supernatural In Jane Eyre
In Jane Eyre, the theme of the Supernatural is used quite often. It is a rather interesting theme
when reading; it grabs your attention and pulls you in. No one can resist a good supernatural
theme, examples of some rather famous novels and/or films are: Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry
Potter, Divergent, etc. Shaking my hair from my eyes, I lifted my head and tried to look boldly
round the dark room: at this moment a light gleamed on the wall. Was it, I asked myself, a ray
from the moon penetrating some aperture in the blind? No; moonlight was still, and this stirred;
while I gazed, it glided up to the ceiling and quivered over my head. I can now conjecture readily

Abortions Pros and Cons Essay
Nowadays, in this world, there are a lot of problems that can make tremendous conflicts for
human beings. They are very complicated and bring a lot of argument and nobody knows what
the exact answer is. They also have pros and cons. One of the most complex problems is
abortion. This is due to moral and ethical values which we all have. The majority of us are
Christians or are brought up in that kind of ambiance which means that as small children we were
taught values that are based on the bible such as that famous phrase Thou shall not kill . This
phrase relates to this topic because an abortionis the murder of a human being.

For the last 17 years, the Hyde Amendment has banned the use of federal funds for almost all
Medicaid abortions. The Hyde Amendment explicitly allows only two exceptions to this
restriction: (1) when the life of the woman is endangered or (2) in cases of rape or incest. Since all
of this was being approved we as a society thought that we could get rid of some of our social
concerns. But it did the complete opposite here are some examples Illegitimate births were at a
10.7% in 1970 and in 1990 it raised to 26.2% in 1990,Children with Single Mothers in 1970
was11% in 1990 was 22%, Violent Crime Rate (per 100,000) in 1970 it was 36.4 2 and in 1990 it
went up to a 73%, Teen Suicide Rate was 5.9% and in 1990 it dramatically increased to a 11.3% ,
and lastly Children on Welfare 8.5% and again that number managed to raise to a 11.9% according
to (Catholic insight , May 2004 p28).
Some of the proposed solutions for this abortion dilemma are making adoption more open to our
current society. This is believed to help stop abortions incases in which the mother cannot support
the unborn child or she wants to avoid raising the unborn child past its birth. This would be an
option for almost anybody considering abortion. As for younger teenagers the promoting of

Symbols In Anthony Doerr s All The Light We Cannot See
The novel All The Light We Cannot See, was written by Anthony Doerr. The novel was set
during World War Two era and features two parallel stories with characters from opposite points
of view. Doers tells the story of how both characters grow up through adversity and how they
overcome their personal struggles. Marie Laure is one of the main characters. She goes blind and
has to learn how to navigate life alone after he father leaves her in the care of her Uncle Etienne.
Werner, the second main character, overcame being an orphan and makes a life decision based
upon his worst fear. Both characters, though living separate but parallel lives, share similar life
experiences that are connected with numerous symbolic objects. Throughout the novelDoerr uses
symbolic objects to create a connection for the reader between Werner and Marie Laure. Doerr s
use of this method to bridge the characters together is done so with the use of several items such
as the radio, shells and mollusks, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the Sea of Flames.
The radio was a major symbol throughout the novel. It played a large role in Werner and Marie
Laure s lives. It was because of the radio that brought the two together. The radio symbolizes the
connection that it give to the people of the world. In All the Lights We Cannot See, radios were

Film Analysis Of Peter Koeleman s The Headline Woman
In a big city like Chicago filled with great music and adventure, good times are easy to track.
Unsurprisingly, so is crime and misconduct, famously running rampant with the media trailing
close behind. However, do the journalists follow ethical principles? Or do their behaviors follow
suit with those they re pursuing? The musical adaptation film Chicago suggests unethical actions
and portrays a dramatic narrative filled with rumors, misjudgment, and sensationalism. Set in a
similar time period to The Headline Woman, Chicago tells the story of stardom seeking Roxie
Hart who joins the company of murderesses on death row after killing her lover out of jealousy
and madness. With assistance from gatekeeper Mama and the charming, sharp witted attorney
Billy Flynn, Hart finally gets the press and fame she was searching for. Her and fellow inmate,

The poem The Tyger by William Blake
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not, and
it shall be given to him. These wise words of King James verse (1:5) of the bible portrays an
underlying message that although we should follow in God s path, we are not expected to follow
blindly. Likewise, in the poem The Tygerby William Blake, it s theme is a reflection of what this
quote implies. Throughout this poem, Blake explores the possibility of questioning God while
using the structure of the poem, as well as the irony of God s character, and several sound devices
in hopes of communicating a message, that to questionGod is only human nature.
First of all, the structure of Blake s poem really contributes to emphasizing it s theme. Roughly
the poem is divided into three major parts, the author starts by describing a tiger, a ferocious and
deadly animal. He slowly transitions into questioning the creation of the Tyger, which he
purposely and carefully organizes as context to the third stage where he will prove what he is
trying to convey through this poem. And what shoulder, and what art. Could twist the sinews of
thy heart? (11 120) This quote, taken from the second part of this poem s structure displays an
example the kind of questions Blake would ask about the tiger s creation. It supports the theme by
helping to create suspense to really magnifying the third part of the poem s structure by making the
reader really think, which is essential in

Galipapa (1310 1380) have provided textual records for the mass killing of Jewsduring the spread of
the plague. The authors argue that a consequence of the plague epidemic was the increase attacks

What the Stamp Act Really Meant Essay
The central thesis of my paper is the Stamp Act and how it was brought about and what it meant
to the American Colonies. As well as why it was necessary. February 6th, 1765 George
Grenville came forth in Parliament to propose his Stamp Bill. Not knowing that it would forever
be a significant part of history. The Act was a tax on every piece of printed paper the colony
used. Including, legal documents, licenses, and even playing cards. The tax also had to be paid
with British currency. Colonial paper money was not valid. This made it more difficult for the
colonists to even pay the tax. The actual cost of the Stamp Act was pretty small in fact. However it
was the principle that upset the colonists. The way the British saw it was that it... Show more

Except this method had never worked before and Great Britain had already had success with the
Stamp Act method in Great Britain. So it made more sense to them to impose the Stamp Act.
However it did not make much sense to the colonists because they argued that their rights as
Englishmen were being taken away because they were being taxed without representation.
Benjamin Franklin said it best when he said That it is suppos d an undoubted Right of
Englishmen not to be taxed but by their own Consent given thro their Representatives. That the
Colonies have no Representatives in Parliament. Patrick Henry is quoted as saying that the
Stamp Act was the very beginning of the Revolutionary war. Patrick Henry was one of the first
colonists to openly attack the Stamp Act, he compared George III to Julius Caesar as well as
Charles I. Patrick Henry was opposed to the Stamp Act as soon as it was passed. He wrote seven
resolutions for the Stamp Act all of which were very radical. These resolutions were published
throughout the colonies. These resolutions really started the talk of independence from Great
Britain. One of which was Resolved, That the first Adventurers and Settlers of this his majesty s
colony and Dominion of Virginia brought with them, and transmitted to their Posterity, and all other
his Majesty s subjects since inhabiting in this his Majesty s said Colony, all the Liberties,
privileges, Franchises, and Immunities that have at any Time been

Similarities Between Hester Prynne And Legally Blonde
The novel, The Scarlet Letter, and the play, Legally Blonde, both portray a strong female lead. In
the novel, Hester Prynne is labeled with a scarlet letter, A , for committing a sin. As the story
progresses she is able to change the meaning of her symbol into something more pleasing to the
public eye. In the beginning of the play, Elle Woodsis seen by her peers as a silly, dumb, blonde ,
but similar to Hester, she is able to change the way she is seen by others in a positive way. Both
of these independent women use their power to influence their society in order to change the
way they are seen by the people around them. Elle Woods from Legally Blonde begins her
journey as president of her sorority, Delta Nu. She is seen as the happy little blonde that always
wears pink. She is given this stereotype by society. Until she is able to change stereotype, that is
all that most people see her as. Her first step in changing her reputation is transferring to Harvard
s School of Law. Her initial drive to attend Harvard was to chase after someone she loved. But
Elle soon realized that she enjoyed studying law more than she thought. After many hours of
studying and encouragement from a professor, Elle was able to prove herself in front of her
fellow students. She showed them that she is more than just pink clothes and scented pink
paper. Elle even takes her change a step further, by proving herself worthy to society in a very
important court case. Elle is able to take charge and evidently win her case, thus helping an
innocent person. Elle finds thrill in this new person she has created within herself and is glad she
did it. She feels as if she is finally more than what society had previously seen her as and is proud
that she was the one who was able to make that change for herself.
Hester Prynne from Hawthorne s, The Scarlet Letter, is marginalized by society for having
committed a sin. She too is given a stereotype by those around her, similar to Elle Woods. In the
beginning, no one dares to speak or even look at Hester because of the A she wears on her chest.
Hester feels as if she needs to change the meaning of this A that is stuck to her, so she sets out to
do so. Every little action that she does,

Tobacco Cessation
Introduction
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and worldwide (Centers for
Disease Control, 2013, World Health Organization, 2008). Tobacco cessation counseling is a vital
component of any public health strategy seeking to decrease mortality, disease and costs associated
with smoking. To that end, the Healthy People 2020 TobaccoUse Objectives cover three main areas:
reducing tobacco use, instituting health system changes, and creating social and environmental
changes (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2013). Objective TU 10 falls under the
category of health system changes as it seeks to open doors for patients to make quit attempts and
to pursue tobacco cessation methods by increasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social Determinants of Health
Social factors associated with higher rates of smoking include low SES being unemployed,
homeless, mentally ill, those who are incarcerated, and single parents. (see Bryant at end).
Perhaps the strongest associations are between low SES and higher rates of tobacco use. Sadly,
those with low SES not only are more likely to smoke, but evidence shows they are less likely to
quit successfully.
In the U.S., only 20% of those at or above the poverty level smoke, compared with 30% of those
below the poverty level (Hiscock, Bauld, Fidler, and Munafo, 2012). Teenage girls of families
with lower SES are more likely to smoke (Hiscock et al, 2012). In addition, those with low SES
are less likely to quit smoking successfully and may be less likely to intend or attempt to quit
(Reid, Hammond, Boudreau, Fong, and Siahpush, 2010). Reid and coauthors surveyed over16,000
smokers in the US, UK, Canada and the United Kingdom and found that those with higher
education were more likely to say they intend to quit smoking, attempt to quit and to be abstinent
for between one and six months. Higher income was also associated with stated intention to quit
and abstinence of at least one month (Reid et al, 2010). In addition, those with low SES

CASE NASA Essay
Case: NASA
Davenport University
Due: November 5, 2013
Introduction
The end of the space shuttle program has brought a great loss to NASA and the employee at the
Kennedy Space Center. This loss not only effect the direct employees but have also effect the
contractors at Alliant Techsystem, whom was task with much of the construction of the Ares rocket
that would catapult the Orion capsule and known as one of the most established supplier for NASA.
As the space shuttle program come to an end, ATK started collecting data from employee s
departure (turnover) to create a model that calculate the possibility of the turnover rate. As indicated

Flight Risk Models
The flight risk model is used to predict a turnover rate and prevent an employee from leaving before
it happens. These models takes to account the employee s age and tenure, marital status, the
criticality of his or her job role, linkages to other flight risk employees, changes in benefit related
issues, and seasonality. (Organizational Behavior, 2013, p. 62) As ATK have used several flight risk
models to stop the most serious form of physical withdrawal, quitting, the one factor that I feel is
most important is being able to prepare for a life situation that can cause a turnover to happen. For
example, boosting the employee s commitment can prevent quitting from happening. This can be
done by creating affective commitment, continuance commitment, normative commitment and
focus of commitment which gives reasons for employees to stay within the company. I feel that the
least important is the workforce metrics because this doesn t really contribute to the employees
within the organizations. As an employee, acknowledgement and rewards are important factors to
keep an employee within the company. Turnover rate can be essentially high if management fails to
recognize this.
Manage issues with turn over
Turnover for NASA or ATK employees are well aware from the ending of the space shuttle program
. This gives management time to look into prevention, as well as preparing for turnover. Data gather

Why Does A Basketball Bounce Higher Than A Bowling Ball
Why does a basketball bounce higher than a bowling ball? Because it is made of different
materials. A basketball is inflated with air and made with a rubber covering that has a high
bounce factor. Bowling balls are made out of hard materials that don t bounce. Why is bounce
good for a basketball and not so good for a bowling ball? Using a baseball to play basketball or a
bowling ball to play tennis doesn t make sense. Different sports require the height from which the
ball is dropped the ball s level of ignition temperature the surface upon which the ball is bounced.
The higher the ball is above the ground, the more its potential energy. As the ball is dropped and
gravity forces it downward, the ball accelerates and gains speed. As the ball falls through the air, its
potential or stored energy is converted into kinetic energy. The longer the fall, the more kinetic
energy it gains and when it hits the ground, it bounces higher. As a ball bounces, it warms. An
inated ball, like a basketball, bounces higher and faster when the temperature is warmer. This is
because the distance between the air molecules in the ball increases, helping the ball maintain its
round shape when it hits the ground. On cooler days, the distance between the air molecules gets
smaller, causing the ball to be less inated. So, it attains more when it hits the ground. A lot of
scientific research goes into developing the right bounce for the right ball. Several other factors
affect the way a ball bounces.

Conflict Between Northern Uganda And The Civil War Essay
When I think about conflict in Northern Uganda, I vividly recall the distant look and aloofness
that my childhood neighbor and friend, Grace, always donned. My primary school was entirely a
boarding school affair. We left the comfort of our parents homes to move to an entirely new
community, living with other children my age, 7 years, sharing, caring and looking out for each
other. Yet, deep down, each of us had their untold story. Grace s story, which she told, piece by
piece, a little unsure whether she could trust me, was different. She talked about one of the biggest
and longest conflicts was in Northern Uganda, a civil war by the Lord s Resistance Army led by
Kony .They carried out widespread abduction, mutilation and kidnapping of children who
became child soldiers, sex slaves and child mothers. Some were civilians with fresh bullet
wounds who had been caught in a rebel ambush; others were land mine victims. Her mother was a
nurse at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, so she spent most of her childhood at the medical
quarters. Each time the ambulance arrived at the hospital; local residents would rush to the
hospital gate to observe in sorrow as dying victims were rolled into the surgery ward. Watching this
daily routine was the beginning of her distrust in humanity and social withdrawal. I had no help to
offer besides a listening ear.
The more she talked about her ordeal, the more she opened up. There was always a glimmer of
hope in her eyes after telling her story.

Emergency Shutdown Procedures And Its Effects On The World...
On the 11th of March, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the eastern coast of Japan.
Emergency shutdown procedures went into effect when the earthquake was spotted, but this was
not the main cause of the destruction of the nuclear reactor. The first line of defense was to
immediately stop the nuclear fissionwithin the reactor by inserting neutronabsorbing rods to stop
the reaction. After the engineers successfully stopped the nuclear fission reaction, immense heat
and pressure was still prominent and needed to be relieved as soon as possible. Fresh water was
brought in and dumped onto the rods but a tsunami inevitably followed as soon as the earthquake
was felt as the source of the natural disaster was on the ocean floor. The tidal wave severely
damaged the power supply system that was meant to maintain the flow was cold water. On March
12, 2011, diesel powered generators were initiated in an attempt to alleviate the failure of the
generators that were powering the entire plant. Unfortunately, the diesel powered generator was
insufficient enough to cool the large reactor as the heat building up within was accumulating in
large amounts; more than what nuclear engineers originally presumed. Water continued to
evaporate causing a hydrogen gas to form when the fuel rods underwent a chemical reaction with
the steam. Hydrogen gas is an important element to take into consideration as too much of this
element can cause an explosion within the reactor. Workers quickly

Toys And Its Impact On Children And Their Performance Of...
Toys play an important role in childhood development as children learn roles and skills from
playing. As a result, the toys children are subjected to have an affect on which roles, interests, and
skills are learned and practiced. Through Lego s product Duplo, I will demonstrate the influence
particular gendered toys have on children and their performance of traditional gender roles.
Gender, which is a learned performance, is something society has been taught from a very early
age and toy advertising has played a significant role in reinforcing the performance. One tradition
that is reinforced and naturalized by society is the ideology of a male dominated society,
representing strong characteristics of heterosexuality and masculinity; also known as hegemonic
masculinity. Therefore, using Ideological Criticism, I will analyze how through the branding and
design of Legos Duplo toys, children have been constructed to do gender differently, ultimately
perpetuating and reinforcing hegemonic masculinity.

Diomedes As A Greek Hero In The Iliad
In the Iliad by Homer, Diomedes a Greek soldier displays excellence in his army. Athena, the god
of war, gives Diomedes qualities of a god, which he uses with virtue, making him a Greek hero.
In the battle, several gods and mortal fighters lack the knowledge of the costs of war, which
creates a lack of virtuous leaders in the fighting. Diomedes fills this gap with his piety, and teaches
his victims the effects of battle. His first major victim is Pandarus, a great archer with arrogance,
whose tongue he brutally rips out. He then scratches his next victim Aphrodite, the goddess of love
and beauty, on her arm, maring her complexion. Diomedes then stabs Ares in the stomach, which
cuts off the source of his appetites. Because Diomedes possesses a balanced soul and piety, he
provides his victims with contrapasso punishment, that demonstrates to them the cost of war,
making him a Greek hero. Diomedes with Athena s assistance brutally rips the great archer,
Pandarus tongue out, because of his overwhelming hubris, which displays to him the seriousness of
war. Pandarus shoots an arrow at Diomedes believing it kills him, because of his pridefulness.
Aeneas persuades Pandarus to finish him off, and he listens, Aeneas the Trojan captain checked him
sharply:/ no talk of turning for home!.../ come, up with you now, climb aboard my chariot! (V.242

Witch Craft Trials Research Paper
There has been a plethora of research conducted that supports the notion that witch craft trials
occurred in Scotland primarily during the 16th and 17th centuries in England and Scotland and had
an impact on the way people chose to live their lives during this time period. Witches were seen as
people who had turned their backs on God and Christianity and entered a pact with the Devil. Due
to this belief, people were quick to prosecute potentially witches to keep the community safe.
Furthermore, there were many different elements of life that had an impact on witch craft trials and
their outcomes, such as the state/national government, local officials and arguably most
importantly, the church. Specifically during the Civil War we saw an increase... Show more content

In order to be tried as a witch, someone who believed themselves to be victimized would come
forward to the authorities. However, before a witch received a formal trial by a criminal court she
was generally identified by a kirk session. Being involved in the first stage of witchcraft trials
allowed the church to help identify witches and begin the interrogation process. In order for an
individual to be tried by a criminal court the church had to seek the approval of the Privy
council. Cases with an abundance of evidence were more likely to have a trial this is still the
case today in court cases. If the court believes there is a high success rate that the accused will be
convicted they are more inclined to bring the issue to court. In addition, the best piece of evidence

Examples Of Righteousness In The Crucible
Over the course of history, the idea of righteousness has clouded people s thinking, leading to
cruel and unnecessary forms of punishment. Arthur Miller s The Crucible significantly illustrates
human cruelty in the name of righteousness. Inspired by the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s,
Miller s play, The Crucible, focuses on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the
extreme behavior that can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. Miller bases the play on
the historical account of the Salem witch trials, a series of hearings before local magistrates
followed by trials to prosecute people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts, between
February 1692 and May 1693. A modern day example that can be recognizably compared to the
Salem witch trials is racial profiling that manifested in the 1700s. Racial profiling is the use of race,
ethnicity, gender, religion, or national origin by law enforcement agents as a factor in deciding
whom to investigate, arrest, or detain with no evidence of a specific crime or criminal behavior.
Throughout the play, there are numerous instances of human cruelty in the name of righteousness
that outline the basis of the Salem witch trials and racial profiling in today s society. In both of the
situations, The Crucible and racial profiling, individuals use their authority to commit hanice
interrogation techniques to get what they want from innocent citizens. You will confess yourself or

Diary Of Anne Frank Literary Analysis
Have you ever been shot at? Have you ever been in a war? Every single character in The Diary of
Anne Frank and Freedom Writers could ve been able to say yes to that question before they even
entered high school. Anne, the girl who wrote in the diary, tried to survive the Holocaust. The
kids from Freedom Writers , were literally fighting for their lives in the middle of a gang war.
Being forced to grow up so fast like these kids had to cause different problems for each of them.
However, The Diary of Anne Frank and Freedom Writers teach readers that to thrive in life you
have to find a balance between humility and pride. Both in The Diary of Anne Frank and
Freedom Writers , the kids were put into situations that forced them to grow up fast. Some of the
kids in Ms. G s class were trying to provide for their families, and Anne was forced to be way
more self dependent than any young girl should be. Both Anne and the kids of room 203
struggled with Pride. For the kids in Freedom Writers , they had too much pride to admit they
were struggling and couldn t take it. For Anne, she had too much pride to show her real emotions
and thought she didn t need to confide in anyone. Thankfully for them, each of the kids in these
stories had someone to teach them how to be humble. Ms. G and Peter both provide a spot for the

Organizational Insight 5.1: Pfizer s New Emerging Hierarchy Through mergers and acquisitions, Pfizer s hierarchy had become too tall. They cut the number of management layers between top scientists from 14 to seven and drastically reduced the number of committees. Q. How did Pfizer s structure contribute to its problems? A. When organizations get too tall, they cannot respond as well or as quickly to the marketplace, which is what happened to Pfizer. This was fixed by flattening the structure so that the organization could respond better to the market. The taller the organization, the less managerial authority and responsibility there are. Tall hierarchies decrease motivation because managers, with less authority and responsibility, are less motivated. In a flat structure, managers have more responsibility and are more motivated. The government launched a National Clean Fleets Partnership aimed at helping businesses incorporate vehicles that run on alternate fuels. It is important for businesses such as UPS to stay on top of changes in the external environment so they can make the best decisions for the business. It s a traditional mexican party that a 15 year old girl celebrates, its meaning is it s a transformation from being a young girl to a woman. This all began spring of last year. My familyand I began to plan my party. We searched for decoration that corresponded to what color I chose for my party. It ended up being the color pink, although it looked more of a coral. Around two weeks later we began to do decorations, by this time the salon was already rented out and was ready to fill it with items and get everything set up. The And Ethnic Groups Of Nigeria Final Paper Nigeria Tara Domino Robinson SOC 308 Racial Ethnic Groups Professor Staccy Lampkin March 22, 2015 Nigeria For my final project, I chose to research (Africa) Nigeria. Nigeria, Africa s most populous country, is composed of more than 250 ethnic groups; the most populous and politically influential are: Hausa and the Fulani 29%, Yoruba 21%, Igbo (Ibo) 18%, Ijaw 10%, Kanuri 4%, Ibibio 3.5%, and Tiv 2.5%. British influence and control over what would become Nigeria and Africa s most populous country grew through the 19th century. A series of constitutions after World War II granted Nigeria greater autonomy. After independence in 1960, politics were marked by coups and mostly military rule, until the death of a military head of state in 1998 allowed for a political transition (CIA, 2012). Nigeria s culture reflects and represents all of the multiple ethnic groups. In Nigeria there are over 521 languages and over 250 ethnic groups and dialects. Out of all the groups, there are four really large groups. The four groups are Hausa and Fulani predominant from the north, Igbo predominant from the southeast and Yoruba predominant from the southwest (en.wikipedia.org). • 8. Using One-Stage Cluster Sampling In cluster sampling, instead of selecting all the subjects from the entire population right off, the researcher must take several steps in order to gather his or her sample population. First, the researcher must select various groups or clusters, and then from each cluster, the researcher begins to choose the individual subjects by either simple random or systematic random sampling. The researcher can even opt to include the entire cluster and not just a subset from it depending on the design study they have chosen. For my particular study, I have chosen to use a simple random control trial, which is pretty common for the testing of behavioral sciences. I have also chosen to use one stage cluster sample, this sample includes all of the children with PTSD and severe forms of trauma that were picked from all the randomly selected clusters in the sample set. Contextualising genre within the Hong Kong film industry: Of all the international film industries across the globe Hong Kong is certainly one that is synonyms with genre cinema. Considering the commercial nature of its film industry, it seems only appropriate that when discussing Hong Kong cinema as a whole, genre seems to be a frequent and integral part of the conversation. The Hong Kong film industry was built to turn a profit and has become the dominant figure in all of East Asian cinema, relying heavily on exporting its films to Mainland China and Taiwan, as well as local box office sales. Ding Tzann Lii describes this relationship as one of marginal imperialism and compares the Hong Kong industries hold over East Asia to that of Hollywood s over the rest of the world. (1998: 125) However, with such a large demand for product Hong Kong has struggled to produce enough films each year to maintain its industries growth. Production rapidly became focused on making films quickly, cheaply and with the intention of being sold easily. • 12. Pros And Cons Of Cyrus In the mid first millennium BCE, numerous groups arose, each with a different set of perspectives, worldviews, and attitudes: the Israelites, the Phoenicians, Neo Assyrians, Persians and Greeks, and so on. For the Jews, they were held captive in Babylon, later returned to Jerusalem by Cyrus, the King of the Persians. Therefore, according to the first article, Cyrus was welcome within their society. These people were extremely religious, especially in regards to Marduk, and they all felt the need to help build their temple in Jerusalem. Everyone wanted to help for their beliefs and God, and gave gifts, money, and resources. Even the Greeks, who later defeated the Persians, saw Cyrus as a model ruler (textbook 132). Even more so, according to the Persian Customs article, most of the clans were made by Cyrus, and the rest, nomad tribes, heavily depended on Cyrus tribes. The Greeks, meanwhile, had their own opinions on the Persians, seen through Herodotuswords. He states that the Persians do not see the Gods, as they have no temples, and instead offer sacrifices; almost as if they enjoy the killings. During this, the Persian sacrificer does not pray to himself, but to all of the Persians, which illustrates how these people truly cared about their empire, and had great respect for the King, also sacrificing to the sun, moon, earth, wind instead of seeing the God itself (Persian Customs). The Greeks did not agree with the Persians, and around this time had many conflicts. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Antigone as a Tragic Hero Essay Antigone as a tragic hero The debate over who is the tragic hero in Antigone is unanswered. The belief that Antigone is the hero is a tough one. Antigone is widely thought of as the tragic hero of the play bearing her name. She would seem to fit the part in light of the fact that she dies for doing what she believes is right. She buries her brother without worrying what might happen to her. Unlike Antigone, Ismene says And break the law, our death will be more shameful even then theirs (pg.5 line 60). In Sophocle s Antigone, the characters show a variety of traits. However, Antigone s life of aspiration, family of noble rank, and display of good mentality portray her as the tragic heroof the story. A tragic hero has haughty, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Antigone fulfills all three traits thoroughly in the story of Antigone. A tragic flaw plays a very imperative part of a tragic hero. Tragic flaw simply means a character weakness. The most common types of tragic flaws are unwarranted pride, ambition, and jealousy. Those who do believe that Antigone was meant to be the true tragic hero argue against others who believe that Creon deserves that honor. They say that the Gods were against Creon, and that he did not truly love his country. His patriotism is to narrow and negative and his conception of justice is too exclusive... to be dignified by the name of love for the state . These arguments, and many others, make many people believe the Antigone is the rightful protagonist. Antigone tries to help her brother without worrying about what will happen to her. She says, I intend to give my brother burial. I ll be glad to die in the attempt, if it s a crime, then it s a crime that God commands (she says in a different translation). Antigone says He has no right to keep me from my own (pg.4 line 48). She was also punished for doing what was right. Her epiphany came, hidden from the audience, before she hung herself. Creon, understanding his ignorance may lead one to believe that he is the true protagonist. But, if you define the word protagonist you would find that a protagonist is one who is a leader or supporter of a cause. Antigone is in support of her own actions in the burial of her brother ... The first shot of her shows her in a white garment and in all the other shots she dresses in similar but more neutral colors. She evolves from being just a beautiful woman to having more responsibility and thus toning her woman qualities to the down low. She quenches her woman attributes and thus renders quite difficult her submission to her emotions and feelings. Master Li is quite simply dressed with an ample kimono undermining his brilliant knowledge of Wudan. This contrast is due to the fact that he abandons his title and takes on the very common role of a regular man. The most interesting example here is the young Long. Her first appearance, which was during the day, reveals a quite sophisticated lady dressed in rich clothes suggesting royalty. Later on in the night, she hides in a ninja attire (a man attire) to commit a theft and exercise Wudan. Under the sun she obeys the rules and let her wild rebellious desires free in the night. She aspires to a life, a role that breaks the principles and rules of tradition. And even if she is entitled, she dares not show it in public until much later where eventually there is breaking point. Here we see how solid the boundaries created around a person by tradition hold strong no matter the person itself. Tradition defines the person not the other way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Clash Of Kings Symbolism A Clash of Kings Was there ever a war where only one side bled? (118) This perspicuous question was raised by George R.R. Martin, an epic fantasy writer and author of the New York Times bestselling novel, A Clash of Kings. I chose this novel because I appreciate merciless world building novels such as Beowulf or Lord of the Rings. Moreover, this novel is the second of the legendary book series known as A Song of Ice and Fire. This story takes place in a medieval setting with potential for an endless amount of possibilities. The novel predominately focuses on a variety of families that all share the common goal of sitting on the Iron Throne. The story is presented from nine separate points of view, eight of them coming from characters with a royal background. Each character has a remarkable in depth backstory and a unique reason for their placement in the War of the Five Kings. The majority of the story occurs in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, where the Lannisters and the Iron Throne are located. The other portions of the novel take place in Winterfell with House Stark, Castle Black with Jon Snow, and Essos with Daenerys Targaryen. The novel picks up immediately where its predecessor, A Game of Thrones, concluded with King Robert Baratheon s death and the Lord of Winterfell, Eddard Stark s, execution. Accompanied by King Baratheon and his Hand s death, the position of King was unsecure. Subsequently, rulers of different origins rise up in an attempt to conquer the Seven ... Photography allows the artist to capture what he sees. The image produced is reality to the artists eye, it can only be manipulated with light and angles. The photograph is a very powerful medium. Her upbringing and the support that she received from her family assisted her development as a novelist. As she continued to create more literary pieces, Austen received more recognition for her work and eventually became the renowned writer she is today. Austen was born in Hampshire, England as the seventh child of Cassandra and George Austen. Coming from a family of respectable community members, Austen grew up in an environment that emphasized education and expressive reasoning. Her earliest form of education began when reading from her father s library. There, Austen was encouraged by her father and began to develop her creativity as an author. Austen eventually pursued a formal education when she and her older sister Cassandra, one of her closest companions, were sent to boarding school. Both Jane and her sister s formal education was abrupt, however, due to financial restrictions. After their formal education came to a halt, the sisters returned to their home and resumed their studies. Jane continued to expand her writing abilities through home based productions, which were common in the casual environment of her family, and collections of personal stories. It is through these experiences that Jane Austen resolved to become a formal writer. Despite never marrying, Austen exhibits an extensive perspective on romance in her collection of novels. Her literary works are comprised of satirical commentaries on society, as well as romantic stories that involve unique characters. Eventually, Austen s romantic novels became popular among the public, as seen with the immense success after her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility. Her clever commentary and skilled writing ability attributed to acknowledgement as an author. Following this success, Austen continued to gain acknowledgement from citizens and praise from literary critics. Austen s reputation skyrocketed in the 20th century while she became accredited for her masterful incorporation of realism elements into her stories (Augustyn). Today, a smaller number of farms produce an increasingly larger amount of produce. Since 1920, the average farm size has grown over 300 percent (Ikred). Productivity is at an all time high, and in recent years the U.S. has had a tremendous increase in international agricultural trade (Brown, 2011, p. 168). For consumers around the world, this means cheaper, more accessible food, which is crucial for a rising world populationwith limited resources. However, the mid size farmer is diminishing in number. We will look at what trends are causing the downfall of the mid size farmer. What this means for rural communities, and whether or not these trends are inevitable. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 3.2 million farmers operate the nation s 2.1 million farms. Although only 2 percent of the farms in America are operated by large corporations (2012 Census Highlights), they produce a considerable amount of the nation s food supply. Large scale operation enables these major corporations to cut production cost, allowing these businesses to sell their product a lower market price. These low prices make it very difficult for smaller farm operations to compete. Inability to compete causes many traditional farmers and farm families to look for additional means of income, or even completely different means of employment. Another trend driving ... Luminol is a chemical that helps crime investigator and detectives find blood or traces of blood not visible in a crime scene. The way it works is, after you spray the reagent in the suspected area, it illuminates a bright blue that can be seen in the dark. The science behind this blood detection technique is that luminol reacts with iron found in hemoglobin, thus making invisible or suspected bloodshed visible to the crime investigator (How Does...). The main part of this reaction and also the way light is produced is when the iron in the blood oxidizes with luminol, resulting in an electronically charged particle, known as 3 amino phthalate, which then produces the blue light that we see (Micheal Seery). Although, it didn t start out that way. Almost immediately, in the second scene of the movie, photojournalists and reporters were overwhelming and berating Hart asking, why did you do it? the minute she got dragged out her front door in handcuffs. • 37. The poem The Tyger by William Blake If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not, and it shall be given to him. These wise words of King James verse (1:5) of the bible portrays an underlying message that although we should follow in God s path, we are not expected to follow blindly. Likewise, in the poem The Tygerby William Blake, it s theme is a reflection of what this quote implies. Throughout this poem, Blake explores the possibility of questioning God while using the structure of the poem, as well as the irony of God s character, and several sound devices in hopes of communicating a message, that to questionGod is only human nature. First of all, the structure of Blake s poem really contributes to emphasizing it s theme. Roughly the poem is divided into three major parts, the author starts by describing a tiger, a ferocious and deadly animal. He slowly transitions into questioning the creation of the Tyger, which he purposely and carefully organizes as context to the third stage where he will prove what he is trying to convey through this poem. And what shoulder, and what art. Could twist the sinews of thy heart? (11 120) This quote, taken from the second part of this poem s structure displays an example the kind of questions Blake would ask about the tiger s creation. It supports the theme by helping to create suspense to really magnifying the third part of the poem s structure by making the reader really think, which is essential in ... February 6th, 1765 George Grenville came forth in Parliament to propose his Stamp Bill. Not knowing that it would forever be a significant part of history. The Act was a tax on every piece of printed paper the colony used. Including, legal documents, licenses, and even playing cards. The tax also had to be paid with British currency. Colonial paper money was not valid. This made it more difficult for the colonists to even pay the tax. The actual cost of the Stamp Act was pretty small in fact. Benjamin Franklin said it best when he said That it is suppos d an undoubted Right of Englishmen not to be taxed but by their own Consent given thro their Representatives. That the Colonies have no Representatives in Parliament. Patrick Henry is quoted as saying that the Stamp Act was the very beginning of the Revolutionary war. Patrick Henry was one of the first colonists to openly attack the Stamp Act, he compared George III to Julius Caesar as well as Charles I. Patrick Henry was opposed to the Stamp Act as soon as it was passed. He wrote seven resolutions for the Stamp Act all of which were very radical. These resolutions were published throughout the colonies. These resolutions really started the talk of independence from Great Britain. In the novel, Hester Prynne is labeled with a scarlet letter, A , for committing a sin. As the story progresses she is able to change the meaning of her symbol into something more pleasing to the public eye. In the beginning of the play, Elle Woodsis seen by her peers as a silly, dumb, blonde , but similar to Hester, she is able to change the way she is seen by others in a positive way. Both of these independent women use their power to influence their society in order to change the way they are seen by the people around them. Elle Woods from Legally Blonde begins her journey as president of her sorority, Delta Nu. She is seen as the happy little blonde that always wears pink. She is given this stereotype by society. Until she is able to change stereotype, that is all that most people see her as. Her first step in changing her reputation is transferring to Harvard s School of Law. Her initial drive to attend Harvard was to chase after someone she loved. But Elle soon realized that she enjoyed studying law more than she thought. After many hours of studying and encouragement from a professor, Elle was able to prove herself in front of her fellow students. She showed them that she is more than just pink clothes and scented pink paper. Elle even takes her change a step further, by proving herself worthy to society in a very important court case. Elle is able to take charge and evidently win her case, thus helping an innocent person. Elle finds thrill in this new person she has created within herself and is glad she did it. She feels as if she is finally more than what society had previously seen her as and is proud that she was the one who was able to make that change for herself. Hester Prynne from Hawthorne s, The Scarlet Letter, is marginalized by society for having committed a sin. She too is given a stereotype by those around her, similar to Elle Woods. Tobacco cessation counseling is a vital component of any public health strategy seeking to decrease mortality, disease and costs associated with smoking. To that end, the Healthy People 2020 TobaccoUse Objectives cover three main areas: reducing tobacco use, instituting health system changes, and creating social and environmental changes (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2013). Sadly, those with low SES not only are more likely to smoke, but evidence shows they are less likely to quit successfully. In the U.S., only 20% of those at or above the poverty level smoke, compared with 30% of those below the poverty level (Hiscock, Bauld, Fidler, and Munafo, 2012). Teenage girls of families with lower SES are more likely to smoke (Hiscock et al, 2012). In addition, those with low SES are less likely to quit smoking successfully and may be less likely to intend or attempt to quit (Reid, Hammond, Boudreau, Fong, and Siahpush, 2010). Reid and coauthors surveyed over16,000 smokers in the US, UK, Canada and the United Kingdom and found that those with higher education were more likely to say they intend to quit smoking, attempt to quit and to be abstinent for between one and six months. (Organizational Behavior, 2013, p. 62) As ATK have used several flight risk models to stop the most serious form of physical withdrawal, quitting, the one factor that I feel is most important is being able to prepare for a life situation that can cause a turnover to happen. This can be done by creating affective commitment, continuance commitment, normative commitment and focus of commitment which gives reasons for employees to stay within the company. • 44. Why Does A Basketball Bounce Higher Than A Bowling Ball Why does a basketball bounce higher than a bowling ball? Because it is made of different materials. A basketball is inflated with air and made with a rubber covering that has a high bounce factor. Bowling balls are made out of hard materials that don t bounce. Why is bounce good for a basketball and not so good for a bowling ball? Using a baseball to play basketball or a bowling ball to play tennis doesn t make sense. Different sports require the height from which the ball is dropped the ball s level of ignition temperature the surface upon which the ball is bounced. The higher the ball is above the ground, the more its potential energy. As the ball is dropped and gravity forces it downward, the ball accelerates and gains speed. As the ball falls through the air, its potential or stored energy is converted into kinetic energy. The longer the fall, the more kinetic energy it gains and when it hits the ground, it bounces higher. As a ball bounces, it warms. An inated ball, like a basketball, bounces higher and faster when the temperature is warmer. This is because the distance between the air molecules in the ball increases, helping the ball maintain its round shape when it hits the ground. On cooler days, the distance between the air molecules gets smaller, causing the ball to be less inated. So, it attains more when it hits the ground. A lot of scientific research goes into developing the right bounce for the right ball. Several other factors affect the way a ball bounces. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conflict Between Northern Uganda And The Civil War Essay When I think about conflict in Northern Uganda, I vividly recall the distant look and aloofness that my childhood neighbor and friend, Grace, always donned. My primary school was entirely a boarding school affair. We left the comfort of our parents homes to move to an entirely new community, living with other children my age, 7 years, sharing, caring and looking out for each other. Yet, deep down, each of us had their untold story. Grace s story, which she told, piece by piece, a little unsure whether she could trust me, was different. She talked about one of the biggest and longest conflicts was in Northern Uganda, a civil war by the Lord s Resistance Army led by Kony .They carried out widespread abduction, mutilation and kidnapping of children who became child soldiers, sex slaves and child mothers. Some were civilians with fresh bullet wounds who had been caught in a rebel ambush; others were land mine victims. Her mother was a nurse at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, so she spent most of her childhood at the medical quarters. Each time the ambulance arrived at the hospital; local residents would rush to the hospital gate to observe in sorrow as dying victims were rolled into the surgery ward. Watching this daily routine was the beginning of her distrust in humanity and social withdrawal. I had no help to offer besides a listening ear. The more she talked about her ordeal, the more she opened up. There was always a glimmer of hope in her eyes after telling her story. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Emergency Shutdown Procedures And Its Effects On The World... On the 11th of March, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the eastern coast of Japan. Emergency shutdown procedures went into effect when the earthquake was spotted, but this was not the main cause of the destruction of the nuclear reactor. The first line of defense was to immediately stop the nuclear fissionwithin the reactor by inserting neutronabsorbing rods to stop the reaction. After the engineers successfully stopped the nuclear fission reaction, immense heat and pressure was still prominent and needed to be relieved as soon as possible. Fresh water was brought in and dumped onto the rods but a tsunami inevitably followed as soon as the earthquake was felt as the source of the natural disaster was on the ocean floor. The tidal wave severely damaged the power supply system that was meant to maintain the flow was cold water. On March 12, 2011, diesel powered generators were initiated in an attempt to alleviate the failure of the generators that were powering the entire plant. Unfortunately, the diesel powered generator was insufficient enough to cool the large reactor as the heat building up within was accumulating in large amounts; more than what nuclear engineers originally presumed. Water continued to evaporate causing a hydrogen gas to form when the fuel rods underwent a chemical reaction with the steam. Hydrogen gas is an important element to take into consideration as too much of this element can cause an explosion within the reactor. Workers quickly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a result, the toys children are subjected to have an affect on which roles, interests, and skills are learned and practiced. Through Lego s product Duplo, I will demonstrate the influence particular gendered toys have on children and their performance of traditional gender roles. Gender, which is a learned performance, is something society has been taught from a very early age and toy advertising has played a significant role in reinforcing the performance. One tradition that is reinforced and naturalized by society is the ideology of a male dominated society, representing strong characteristics of heterosexuality and masculinity; also known as hegemonic masculinity. Therefore, using Ideological Criticism, I will analyze how through the branding and design of Legos Duplo toys, children have been constructed to do gender differently, ultimately perpetuating and reinforcing hegemonic masculinity. Athena, the god of war, gives Diomedes qualities of a god, which he uses with virtue, making him a Greek hero. In the battle, several gods and mortal fighters lack the knowledge of the costs of war, which creates a lack of virtuous leaders in the fighting. Diomedes fills this gap with his piety, and teaches his victims the effects of battle. His first major victim is Pandarus, a great archer with arrogance, whose tongue he brutally rips out. He then scratches his next victim Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, on her arm, maring her complexion. Diomedes then stabs Ares in the stomach, which cuts off the source of his appetites. Because Diomedes possesses a balanced soul and piety, he provides his victims with contrapasso punishment, that demonstrates to them the cost of war, making him a Greek hero. Diomedes with Athena s assistance brutally rips the great archer, Pandarus tongue out, because of his overwhelming hubris, which displays to him the seriousness of war. Pandarus shoots an arrow at Diomedes believing it kills him, because of his pridefulness. Due to this belief, people were quick to prosecute potentially witches to keep the community safe. • 52. Examples Of Righteousness In The Crucible Over the course of history, the idea of righteousness has clouded people s thinking, leading to cruel and unnecessary forms of punishment. Arthur Miller s The Crucible significantly illustrates human cruelty in the name of righteousness. Inspired by the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s, Miller s play, The Crucible, focuses on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behavior that can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. Miller bases the play on the historical account of the Salem witch trials, a series of hearings before local magistrates followed by trials to prosecute people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts, between February 1692 and May 1693. A modern day example that can be recognizably compared to the Salem witch trials is racial profiling that manifested in the 1700s. Racial profiling is the use of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or national origin by law enforcement agents as a factor in deciding whom to investigate, arrest, or detain with no evidence of a specific crime or criminal behavior. Throughout the play, there are numerous instances of human cruelty in the name of righteousness that outline the basis of the Salem witch trials and racial profiling in today s society.
