Potato Famine of 1845 Essay
At the end of the summer of 1845, a thick rain fell throughout Ireland, carrying with its pores of blight
that killed multiple crops, including the potato crop. Because Ireland was dependent on the potato
crop, the results of this blight were catastrophic. Britain, who had control over Ireland at this time, did
very little to help the now starving and poor Irish. As a result of English disregard towards the Irish
during the Potato Famine of 1845, the already fragile relationship between Ireland and England
worsened.
When this particular blight, containing the fungus phytophthora infestans, struck the potatoes, it killed
the tuber of the plant and potatoes all throughout Ireland began to rot. The blight also hit the rest of
Europe and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, there was an outbreak of cholera in 1849. Ireland was running out of space for corpses to
be buried, so hundreds of these bodies were not buried with coffins; just a few inches below the soil
and ground almost touching the corpse next to it (Kinealy, 93). Many of the Irish that didn t die from
these diseases did die from starvation. Seeing as the potato was main source of nutrition for many
Irish people, many became malnourished. Not only was it nutritious, but also the potato was very
cheap and fed large amounts of people. The Potato Famine hit the hardest in 1847; it was the height of
hunger in Ireland. It is thought that over half of a million people die in 1847, compared to the million
that died from 1845 1848 (Kinealy, 92). Many of the Irish chose to become potato farmers, due to the
fact that it could be grown on such cheap land. When the famine hit, thousands soon found themselves
out of work. Many could not pay their rent, and were evicted. Some landlords tried their best to help
their tenants and not charge them for rent, but soon they needed a source of income as well (Scally,
117). Between 1849 and 1854, approximately 250,000 people were evicted from their homes. Whole
families were left out on the street to die (Kinealy, 125). Now, homeless and starving, many soon
emigrated. The majority of

Nature Is at the Heart of ‘the Darkling Thrush’ and...
Nature is at the heart of The Darkling Thrush and most of Hardy s most famous poems.
Hardy is a renowned rural poet which suggests that he has a keen interest and knowledge of nature.
However, this is not to say that nature is at the heart at every one of his most famous poems it is
sometimes merely a backdrop for other themes, such as war, fate and lost love. Hardy explores human
nature in Drummer Hodge , the downward spiral of mankind using Channel Firing and romantic grief
in The Voice . In my opinion this statement implies that all of Hardy s most famous works are
connected to nature. However, such a prolific poet cannot be labelled with such an absolute statement.
Although on the surface Darkling Thrush appears to focus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Hardy has no personal experience of war or the South African landscape, he uses jargon,
Karoo and kopje crest to set the scene, and reveals the horror of war when Hodge is thrown uncoffined
just as found to grow to some Southern tree . The alliteration of strange stars emphasises Hodge s
ignorance of the cause for which he has died. Drummer Hodge is a prime example of how Hardy
employs the theme of nature in a less obvious way, something which features in several of his most
famous works. In conclusion, it is clear that as Hardy employs such a wide variety of topics in his
poetry, it is extremely difficult to provide an overview for his work. This is not to say Hardy was not a
rural poet; in some of his works, such as Weathers , he focuses entirely on the world he sees around
him. Chestnut spikes , nestlings fly and meadow rivulets overflow reveal Hardy s skill at providing
snapshots of the natural world. Nevertheless, in most of Hardy s most famous poems there are
significant underlying themes which are apparent in the texts above. There is no one stereotype under
which Hardy can be classified; the reader must bear this in mind when analysing his poetry, and look
more deeply into his works rather than only exploring the surface

An Example Of Impression Management Theory
Making good impressions in significant throughout life, it is human nature to be concerned with how
you are perceived to others. People have a certain expectation on how they view themselves and what
other to view them. Impression management is a conscious or subconscious process in which people
attempt to influence the perceptions of other people about a person, object or event. They do so by
regulating and controlling information in social interaction.[1] It was first conceptualized by Erving
Goffman in 1959, and then got expanded in 1967. An example of impression management theory in
play is in sports such as soccer. At an important game, a player would want to showcase themselves in
the best light possible, because there are college recruiters watching. Without a doubt, this person
would have the flashiest pair of cleats and try and perform their best to show off their skills. Their
main goal may not be to win the game but instead to impress the college recruiters in a way that
increases their chances of being chosen for a college team.[2]
Impression management is usually used synonymously with self presentation, in which a person tries
to influence the perception of their image. The notion of impression management was first applied in
face to face communication, but then was applied to computer mediated communication. Also this
concept was applied into different field of study from academic research in the field of psychology
and sociology to practical fields such as

The Ku Klux Klan ( Kkk )
The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) came into being in 1865 and was widespread in the southern states of the
USA. It was founded by former Confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee. It was a movement,
formed after the civil war of America, to oppress the Republican Party s policies of reconstruction.
Few years after its formation, the movement engaged in war, fear and hatred in the war ravaged south.
The group s activities during this period have had adverse effects on the American society that still
haunt them to date (Southern Poverty Law Centre, 2011).
Racial supremacy was the driving force of the group s initial driving force. Ku Klux Klan objectives
aimed at re establishing white authority throughout America. The southern states were characterized
by lawlessness and violence in an attempt to intimidate the black community and sympathizers of the
Republican s policies of slavery abolishment. The group has been powerful and very evident twice in
the American history (Southern Poverty Law Centre, 2011).
In this paper, we will concentrate on the movement s activities and defining moments from 1865 to
1900. The above is the first period of the clan widely known as the first Klan. The paper looks at how
the group contributed to the reestablishment of white supremacy in the social, political and economic
life of the South America. The goals and tactics of the clan led to bloody events that shaped the socio
economic and political lifestyle of both white and black Southern Americans.

The Pros And Cons Of Eugenics
Eugenics is the science of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population by
controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristic traits and decrease
the occurrence of undesirable characteristic traits or genetical defects (Webster, 1828.) Eugenic
sterilization refers to the involuntary sterilization of certain categories of individuals without their
need for consent by those subjected to the procedure (Pozgar, 2012, Pg. 411.) Individuals classified as
mentally deficient, feeble minded, epileptic, promiscuous, sexual deviants, or persons classified as
habitual criminals were mainly targeted (Pozgar, 2012, Pg. 411.) Eugenicists argued degenerate traits
tainted society through the reproduction of the lowest class and sterilization was to keep the
handicapped from perpetuating themselves (Kaelber, 2014.) In addition, eugenicists also argued that
feeble minded individuals were believed to be financial burdens to society by overcrowding prisons,
hospitals and living off welfare (Kaelber, 2014.) Sterilization was seen as a way to prevent the
spending of tax dollars on the feeble minded (Kaelber, 2014.) These arguments allowed Eugenics to
become an acceptable practice. Advocates believed that getting rid of the feeble minded and mentally
deficient would decrease the undesirable characteristic traits within the human gene pool and
ultimately improve the human population. The very first sterilization law was passed in

Speech-Language Pathology Essay

faculty and professionals. It is not just children that are stuttering, but it affects a great majority of
adults. In the near future, I want to advocate for people that come from my background and that speak

The Pupil By Henry James
In the excerpt from The Pupil by Henry James, three very different characters find themselves
intertwined because they all need something from each other. Through the eyes of an introverted and
timid young man, James explains the intricate relationship between an old, aristocratic women, an
eleven year old boy who needs help, and our main character who is in desperate need of money.
Through elegant diction and advanced grammar, the author creates a prestigious and elite tone The
third person point of view gives us insight on the internal conflict and also reveals a lot to the reader
about the kind of person Pemberton is. A monetary man that isn t in the job for the right reasons. His
lack of confidence begins to surface as he describes himself as unpleasant and questions his scholastic
ability to tutor a pupil, when he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our timid young man later evolves into Pemberton as we learn more about him, and the fat rich lady is
referred to as Mrs. Moreen . James explains the name of the title as Pemberton worries frantically
about the eleven year old boy who becomes The pupil . In doing this, he juxtaposes an outsider
perspective of the characters with specific names to slowly make the poem personable as it progresses.
As more information is disclosed, the more connected we become to the characters allowing us to
understand their emotions and motives behind their actions. For example, we learn that Pemberton
only accepts this job because he needs the money. If he didn t need the money it s implied that he most
likely wouldn t take the job due to his lack of belief in his own skills. The tone of the poem fluxuates
between formal and informal to explain what they all desire. James achieves this by using intelligent
diction complemented with a simplistic undertone, by doing this he creates an opportunity to
implement essential information to understand the

The Complexity Of Endogenous Ligands For P2YR
Endogenous ligands for P2YR The most abundant and best characterized endogenous ligand for P2YR
is the nucleotide ATP. ATP binds to all P2YRs except P2Y6R and P2Y14R12. Its binding
characteristics exemplify the complexity of P2YR signalling: at low concentrations it is the only
native agonist for P2Y11R, but at higher concentrations it functions as a partial agonist for P2Y1R and
P2Y13R, or as an antagonist for human P2Y4R or P2Y12R11, 12, 15. Other nucleotides, such as ADP,
UTP, UDP or UDP glucose, exhibit more specificity for individual P2YRs. For example, ADP
activates P2Y1R, P2Y12R and P2Y13R, whereas UTP primarily binds to P2Y2R and P2Y4R, and to a
lesser extent to P2Y6R, for which UDP is its preferred native ligand. P2Y14R is ... Show more content

Functional roles of P2YR in unchallenged mice Mice with genetic deletions for human P2YR
homologous genes have been generated and characterized, with the exception of P2RY11, which is not
expressed in mice12. Despite their widespread expression and their functional involvement in many
diseases, mice with global deletions for individual P2YRs display only mild phenotypical alterations
when maintained unchallenged in a germ free environment. For instance, P2ry2−/− mice have slightly
lower plasma concentrations of aldosterone, renin and potassium20, whereas global deletion of P2ry4
is associated with lower exercise capacity and reduced myocardial hypertrophy during a swimming
exercise21. These findings indicate the likelihood of some redundancy in the signalling system, or
compensatory mechanisms following global P2ry gene deletion. P2YR signalling during inflammatory

Third Estate Recommendations
By analyzing source two, the recommendations to the king made by the third, second, and first estates
general can be interpreted. These recommendations to the king were before the formation of the tennis

voting on matters that concern that order, while the second estates political perspective would be more
towards laws that should be made by both the king and the estates general, unlike the third estates
political perspective of court judges being chosen from all orders. Whereas, the estates social

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Setting A Direct By Service
Direct by services have become popular each day for television customers. While the majority of us
understand the advantages a DTH service offers, there s a particular point that works as a
disadvantage. The establishment from the receiving antenna must be completed with absolute
precision. A slight tilt within the position from the antenna can lead to altered signals an undesirable
display quality.
The antenna install process is really a complex someone to perform. Various issues have to be taken

Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes Quotes Courage
It s scientifically proven that people who live courageously have less regrets in life. Leaders have a lot
of courage, and that s what people like in leaders, but you don t have to be a leader to have courage.
Everyone s born with it in them. There are people with less courage and others with buckets full of
courage, but I know everybody has at least some in them. Courage is important because it s taking a
risk or making a decision to help yourself or others. It s doing something you re scared of doing. In
Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes there is a lot of courage shown by the characters. We all show courage at
one point or another.
Courage is important for helping others. Sarah is the most courageous character in this book because
she was brave to do things. There were many different parts of the book where she showed courage,
but definitely the most courageous one was when she was three years old and tried to save her mom
while she was being abused by Virgil Byrnes. On page 143 Sarah says to Eric, I ran at him, screaming,

computers and that are propagating through network and server without the knowledge of
administrator. Another problem is in uploading the whole and accurate data of staff, students and
admin data from remote location. Web site works on different types of login, students and staff only

However, Mexico was not my country, it was always busy with people shouting and the school was

Hollow Face Impression Analysis
The hollow face illusion is an illusion produced by ambiguity of visual depth processing (Gregory
1970). It occurs when a concave, hollow mask is perceived as a convex face i.e. with facial features
protruding towards the observer (Hill and Johnston, 2007). Hill and Bruce (1993) propose that the
illusion is a result of the contradictory information received from depth cues. Contrary to this, Hill and
Johnston (2007) assert that this is not the case. Rather, they emphasise alternative explanations such as
the familiarity of faces and a general inclination towards convexity. A number of studies support these
assertions, and moreover provide evidence that suggests a number of factors are critical in creating the
illusion. Primarily, these include motion, shading, and orientation. (Marr, 1982; Gregory, 1973; Hill
and Bruce, 1993; Georgeson, 1979). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our brain receives input that is processed by the visual system in order to create perception. This is
referred to as bottom up processing, as the information travels through a hierarchy of structures
ranging from early cortical areas to higher functioning systems (Oram and Perret, 1994). In contrast,
our brain often makes inferences about what we perceive, as a function of top down processing
(Cauller, 1995). In the case of the hollow face illusion, our brain knows what we are observing is a
face, and that faces are typically associated with convex objects (Gregory, 1973). Georgeson (1979)
supports this idea by suggesting that the familiarity of an object has the ability to interfere with how it

18th Century American Pirates
While images of Port Royal and the Spanish Main fill most people s imagination when they hear the

Paul Jackson Pollock was a phenomenal American painter. He was known for his unique style he
called drip painting. One of Pollock s first drip paintings is called Mural. Drip paintings become a
controversial topic in the art world. Many claimed that it was not legitimate art due to how chaotic the
piece looked. However, it is legitimate art due to how creative and successful it was.
Creativity is a characteristic produced from one s imagination. To be creative means to think outside
the box and do something no one would expect. Creativity branches off originality. When you do
something creative it simulates your mind. To create is to express yourself in a unique way. Inventing

unconventional tools for his masterpieces such as harden brushes, sticks, and basting syringes. Using
these odd objects made his work look energetic and helped to establish him as an abstract artist. After
the composition of Mural Pollock shied away from his more contemporary works. Pollock also had an

What Is The Theme Of This Is How You Lose Her
The novel This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz is a group of short stories about Yunior s struggles
growing up in the states. The novel concentrates on his failed relationships with women because of the
way he was raised by his family. Coming from a poor home in Santo Domingo, Yunior grows up in
America with an absent father, an abusive brother and a distant mother. These stories show how
cultural experiences and values are essential elements for helping people grow and succeed in life.
This literary analysis of This is How You Lose Her will explain how parenting, death and cultural
experiences happen to influence in Yunior s character and his love life.

In Nilda and The Pura Principle, the author describes how Yunior s brother is abusive with his women
and promiscuous. The first time Yunior smelled a woman s vagina was after his brother touched his
former girlfriend Nilda and held his finger in front of Yunior s nose . (p. 34) This act shows readers
how disrespectful and vulgar Rafa was with women. Rafa was also very bad mannered with his
mother. It is clear how his father s influences were an element in his behavior. Even though his mother
ignored how bad he treated her, she always let him get away with whatever he wanted. Rafa being the
favorite son, made him seem better than Yunior. After he was diagnosed with cancer, Rafa became
angrier and more abusive with his girlfriends. One time Rafa got so angry at one of his girlfriends that
he grabbed her around the parking lot by her hair making her pants go down and show her private
parts . (p. 97) The author explicitly shows how Rafa thought he was powerful among women. These
experiences of mistreating women like non humans reflected on Yunior s life which made him grow

Jupiter Research Paper
As the fourth brightest object in the sky, the knowledge of Jupiter has been around and mildly
understood since ancient times. The Ancient Romans named the planet after Jupiter, their god of
thunder. The oldest know observations of Jupiter date back to the 7th century BCE Babylonians,
located within what is now Iraq, and the information written down within the series of cuneiform
archives from their astrologers named the Enuma anu Enlil. Meaning In the days of Anu and Enil , it
contains around 70 tablets, showing the understanding of space of the Ancient Babylonians. Within it,
there is evidence that Jupiter was studied for its orbit and impact on Earth. Claudius Ptolemaeus, a

Female Representation Of Women During Star Wars
A very short time ago, in a world very well known, the famous Star Wars movies were brought to
creation. George Lucas originally exposed the original Star Wars in 1977, and it has continued to up to
present day. The ideas Lucas created through these movies helped evolve other films. One of the
things that the prior Star Wars didn t evolve though was female representation in movies. The
representation of women in past Star Wars films compared to the most recent Star Wars film has
substantially evolved in the characterization of females. Through watching all Star Wars films, I can
personally say that there was a dramatic change in how females were perceived in past Star Wars films
compared to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

These types of clothing consisted of avoidable tears in shirts and other clothing to show off her toned

Wars: The Force Awakens, a female character was portrayed as one of the stormtroopers captains.
Captain Phasma, however, was not portrayed like most female characters in past films. Instead of
being depicted as a sexual and dependent character, her script and costume conveyed otherwise.
Captain Phasma wore an outfit similar to an average stormtrooper of any gender that did not sexualize
her character. As well as this, the script used for her character showed little correlation to the
stereotypical female presentation in prior films. It consisted of her characters script corresponding to
how a stormtrooper captain would behave. She was not there to please the audience, or act sexy, but
instead to play a part in the movie. Another representation of this is the female character, Rey. This
character was given the opportunity to develop into who she was, not for the purpose of a man. Rey is
one of the most prominent characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Her character spends no time
developing for a man but instead trying to do what is right. Her characters attire, similar to Captain
Phasma, is not based to please the audience, but instead based on the particular situation she was in.
As well as these characters, there was Maz

NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHES IN AUSTRALIA (NCCA)
The NCCA is an example of an ecumenical movement – it brings together a number of Australia s

through its federation of all the major Christian churches in Australia and its faithful commitment

Rob Reiner does an excellent job importing Charachter, Diction, and Spectical in this magnificent

Jack Nicholson in this movie does a outstanding job being Col. Nathan Jessep in making the movie

movie showing how powerful he thinks he is, at times how corrupt and cuel he can be. You can tell
from Nicholsons facial expressions throughout the play on what he is thinking and what he might

that he responds to the other officers is in a tone making it crystal clear that he is above them in rank,
but he alslo has a short teemper throughout the film you will se him use sarcasm or anger to show his

Nationalism vs Patriotism
George Orwell wrote that nationalism was one of the worst enemies of peace. He defined nationalism
as the feeling that your way of life, country, or ethnic group were superior to others. These types of
feelings lead a group to attempt to impose their morality on any given situation. When those standards
were not met, more often then not, war would result. In contrast he stated that patriotism was the
feeling of admiration for a way of life etc. and the willingness to defend it against attack. The obvious
difference between the two is that while patriotism is a passive attitude, nationalism is aggressive by
nature. Orwell was writing this during the years just prior to World War Two when nationalism in
Europe was running rampant. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On their side the United States began their policy of propping up a variety of dictatorships under the
guise of preventing the spread of communism. It s debateable whether these initial actions were driven
more by real politick then nationalism, one side trying to limit the other sides power and influence
more then an expansion and imposition of a way of life. But in the end the justifications for actions
began to take on the sound of nationalistic fervour whatever the original intent.
American governments began wrapping themselves in the flag of protectors of freedom and
democracy under more and more spurious circumstances. Meanwhile the Soviets claims of liberation
from the chains of capitalism and oppression became harder to swallow during the post Stalin

their beginnings. Under the Tsars the Russian empire was just as expansionistic as the Soviets
stretching their sphere of influence from the Balkans to the near east. In the U. S. it was first
implemented as policy in 1810 with the Monroe Doctrine, which lay claim to the whole western

This led to the development of Belbin s Self Perception Inventory which initially identified eight
distinct team roles (the ninth role of specialist was identified after the initial research). In 1981, Belbin
s Self Perception Inventory was included in his book Management Teams: Why they succeed or fail .
This inventory was derived from past versions. The 9 Belbin Team Roles are:
Completer/Finisher, Chairman/Co ordinator, Monitor/Evaluator, Implementer, Resource Investigator,
Plant, Shaper, Team worker, and Specialist.
Belbin believed individuals have a preferred team role, alongside a secondary team role which would
only show itself if the preferred team role was being played by another staff member or there was a
gap in the team in which a role was not being played. Belbin suggested therefore, that the team role
composition of a team may determine if it is successful or if it fails.

of development before they can achieve maximum effectiveness, stating this process may be
subconscious. The five stages of group development Tuckman proposes are: Forming,

Deception And Trickery, Often Seen In Real Life, Is A Concept
Deception and trickery, often seen in real life, is a concept well portrayed in William Shakespeare s
Hamlet. In the play, as the conflict develops, Hamlet, King Claudius, and Ophelia, all use deception to
achieve their goals. Hamlet, being the main character, has many instances of deceit. He starts out by
feigning madness, then puts on a play to find out if the king killed his father, and finally switches out
papers, sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their deaths. Hamlet meets with his dead father s
ghost and learns that Claudius killed the deceased king. Upon learning this, Hamlet says, How strange

Throughout the play, Hamlet uses deceit and trickery to gain an advantage and achieve his goals.
Slightly differently, Polonius utilizes Ophelia in an attempt to deceive Hamlet. In trying to understand
what Hamlet is up to, Polonius makes Ophelia lie to Hamlet. Polonius says, Gracious, so please you/
we will bestow ourselves. (to Ophelia) Read on this book/ That show of such an exercise may colour/
Show your lonliness (3.1.43 46). Polonius wants Ophelia to find out what Hamlet is doing while he
and the king eavesdrop. Because Ophelia is required to listen to Polonius, she blatantly lies to Hamlet
in their ensuing conversation. Hamlet and Ophelia talk saying,
HAMLET. . . . Where s your father?
OPHELIA. At home, my lord.
HAMLET. Let the doors be shut upon him, that he may play the fool no where but in s own house.
Farewell. (3.1.141 144)
Through this conversation, Ophelia is forced to deceive Hamlet. However, Hamlet is not fooled. He
knows something is up and doesn t disclose any pertinent information. In a way, this could really be
considered Polonius s deception because he is the one really in control, not Ophelia. Either way, these
deceptions are important in building conflict, contributing to the need for a resolution. Lastly, King
Claudius uses deceit often throughout the play. The conflict of the story actually starts, or is caused by,
King Claudius. The Ghost of the

centaury was frowned upon by the church as a result witches were feared and loathed in the
community. Many people thought that they were directly connected to Lucifer (the devil). Their
evidence of this was that the devils familiars came up from hell and drank the witches blood from
devil spots (moles or birthmarks), in return for this blood he would grant them special powers such as
the ability to fly, foul crops or kill at a glance. As a result of this propaganda created by the church

Each witch responds almost instantly as if continuing the sentence like one being. This crates the
atmosphere of a spell or a chant. This enables them to see past the present in to the future such as
when they say when the battles lost and won , this suggests that they already know the outcome they
know more than you. The witches also speak of some very unusual things that suggests that they are
not normal. One of the oddest things they say is Hover through the fog and filthy air giving you the
impression that they can fly. They also chant fair is foul and foul is fair , which would make it appear
that they have a warped perception of reality what you would perceive as foul they would perceive as
fair meaning that they can bend the rules a little. This draws you in because you want to know what
mischief they can create. In the production that I saw I thought that they carried out this very well with
fantastic lighting and sound affects. The witches were dressed in simple black robes and rags, but
while reciting there lines there was a battle going on behind them with men falling in all directions
which provides a feeling of confusion and that they have more power then the men fighting. I thought
that this was brilliant because it gave the beginning of the production a real dramatic exciting start to
the play.

Themes Of Memento Mori
literature around this time revolve mostly around lyric poems and plays to let people express their
feelings. One of the themes that you often occur in lyrical poems and plays is memento mori.
Memento mori means remember the dead (pg.162). This saying was created because of the massive
amount of death that happens around this time, such as the black death and constant battles. Not only
does the saying apply to death in battle, but it also applies to those who have not excepted Christ and
follow his rules shall receive hell. The
Europeans who live in the medieval era were very religious and believe in Jesus Christ and
Virgin Mary. For examples, stories like the Everyman and Ubi Sunt Qui ante Nos Fuerunt are often
read in musical rhythm and their topics often explore romantic feelings
(vocabulary.com). In the Medieval era, the major theme in stories that are used constantly is memento
mori, to helps teach and express a lesson in plays, lyrical poems, and about the belief of the Europeans
in the 15th century.
In addition, the use of memento mori is mostly used in plays, normally to leave a great impact at the
end to give the audience something to remember and learn some sort of lesson.
For example, a popular play that was performed at the time was Everyman. Everyman s plot was to let
everyone know that time waits for no man and if your heart is not purified and clean enough for God,
then he or she will spend entirety in hell when death reaches them. We see

praised and rewarded by his mother. If not, then he will feel inferior. He would also be influenced by

However, this is merely how is should be, but is not how it is for Eric. Lack of iniative is not the

  • 2. Potato Famine of 1845 Essay At the end of the summer of 1845, a thick rain fell throughout Ireland, carrying with its pores of blight that killed multiple crops, including the potato crop. Because Ireland was dependent on the potato crop, the results of this blight were catastrophic. Britain, who had control over Ireland at this time, did very little to help the now starving and poor Irish. As a result of English disregard towards the Irish during the Potato Famine of 1845, the already fragile relationship between Ireland and England worsened. When this particular blight, containing the fungus phytophthora infestans, struck the potatoes, it killed the tuber of the plant and potatoes all throughout Ireland began to rot. The blight also hit the rest of Europe and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, there was an outbreak of cholera in 1849. Ireland was running out of space for corpses to be buried, so hundreds of these bodies were not buried with coffins; just a few inches below the soil and ground almost touching the corpse next to it (Kinealy, 93). Many of the Irish that didn t die from these diseases did die from starvation. Seeing as the potato was main source of nutrition for many Irish people, many became malnourished. Not only was it nutritious, but also the potato was very cheap and fed large amounts of people. The Potato Famine hit the hardest in 1847; it was the height of hunger in Ireland. It is thought that over half of a million people die in 1847, compared to the million that died from 1845 1848 (Kinealy, 92). Many of the Irish chose to become potato farmers, due to the fact that it could be grown on such cheap land. When the famine hit, thousands soon found themselves out of work. Many could not pay their rent, and were evicted. Some landlords tried their best to help their tenants and not charge them for rent, but soon they needed a source of income as well (Scally, 117). Between 1849 and 1854, approximately 250,000 people were evicted from their homes. Whole families were left out on the street to die (Kinealy, 125). Now, homeless and starving, many soon emigrated. • 3. Nature Is at the Heart of ‚Äòthe Darkling Thrush‚Äô and... Nature is at the heart of The Darkling Thrush and most of Hardy s most famous poems. Hardy is a renowned rural poet which suggests that he has a keen interest and knowledge of nature. However, this is not to say that nature is at the heart at every one of his most famous poems it is sometimes merely a backdrop for other themes, such as war, fate and lost love. Hardy explores human nature in Drummer Hodge , the downward spiral of mankind using Channel Firing and romantic grief in The Voice . In my opinion this statement implies that all of Hardy s most famous works are connected to nature. However, such a prolific poet cannot be labelled with such an absolute statement. Although on the surface Darkling Thrush appears to focus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Hardy has no personal experience of war or the South African landscape, he uses jargon, Karoo and kopje crest to set the scene, and reveals the horror of war when Hodge is thrown uncoffined just as found to grow to some Southern tree . The alliteration of strange stars emphasises Hodge s ignorance of the cause for which he has died. Drummer Hodge is a prime example of how Hardy employs the theme of nature in a less obvious way, something which features in several of his most famous works. In conclusion, it is clear that as Hardy employs such a wide variety of topics in his poetry, it is extremely difficult to provide an overview for his work. This is not to say Hardy was not a rural poet; in some of his works, such as Weathers , he focuses entirely on the world he sees around him. Chestnut spikes , nestlings fly and meadow rivulets overflow reveal Hardy s skill at providing snapshots of the natural world. Nevertheless, in most of Hardy s most famous poems there are significant underlying themes which are apparent in the texts above. There is no one stereotype under which Hardy can be classified; the reader must bear this in mind when analysing his poetry, and look more deeply into his works rather than only exploring the surface ... • 4. An Example Of Impression Management Theory Making good impressions in significant throughout life, it is human nature to be concerned with how you are perceived to others. People have a certain expectation on how they view themselves and what other to view them. Impression management is a conscious or subconscious process in which people attempt to influence the perceptions of other people about a person, object or event. They do so by regulating and controlling information in social interaction.[1] It was first conceptualized by Erving Goffman in 1959, and then got expanded in 1967. An example of impression management theory in play is in sports such as soccer. At an important game, a player would want to showcase themselves in the best light possible, because there are college recruiters watching. Without a doubt, this person would have the flashiest pair of cleats and try and perform their best to show off their skills. Their main goal may not be to win the game but instead to impress the college recruiters in a way that increases their chances of being chosen for a college team.[2] Impression management is usually used synonymously with self presentation, in which a person tries to influence the perception of their image. The notion of impression management was first applied in face to face communication, but then was applied to computer mediated communication. Also this concept was applied into different field of study from academic research in the field of psychology and sociology to practical fields such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Ku Klux Klan ( Kkk ) The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) came into being in 1865 and was widespread in the southern states of the USA. It was founded by former Confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee. It was a movement, formed after the civil war of America, to oppress the Republican Party s policies of reconstruction. Few years after its formation, the movement engaged in war, fear and hatred in the war ravaged south. The group s activities during this period have had adverse effects on the American society that still haunt them to date (Southern Poverty Law Centre, 2011). Racial supremacy was the driving force of the group s initial driving force. Ku Klux Klan objectives aimed at re establishing white authority throughout America. The southern states were characterized by lawlessness and violence in an attempt to intimidate the black community and sympathizers of the Republican s policies of slavery abolishment. The group has been powerful and very evident twice in the American history (Southern Poverty Law Centre, 2011). In this paper, we will concentrate on the movement s activities and defining moments from 1865 to 1900. The above is the first period of the clan widely known as the first Klan. The paper looks at how the group contributed to the reestablishment of white supremacy in the social, political and economic life of the South America. The goals and tactics of the clan led to bloody events that shaped the socio economic and political lifestyle of both white and black Southern Americans. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Pros And Cons Of Eugenics Eugenics is the science of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristic traits and decrease the occurrence of undesirable characteristic traits or genetical defects (Webster, 1828.) Eugenic sterilization refers to the involuntary sterilization of certain categories of individuals without their need for consent by those subjected to the procedure (Pozgar, 2012, Pg. 411.) Individuals classified as mentally deficient, feeble minded, epileptic, promiscuous, sexual deviants, or persons classified as habitual criminals were mainly targeted (Pozgar, 2012, Pg. 411.) Eugenicists argued degenerate traits tainted society through the reproduction of the lowest class and sterilization was to keep the handicapped from perpetuating themselves (Kaelber, 2014.) In addition, eugenicists also argued that feeble minded individuals were believed to be financial burdens to society by overcrowding prisons, hospitals and living off welfare (Kaelber, 2014.) Sterilization was seen as a way to prevent the spending of tax dollars on the feeble minded (Kaelber, 2014.) These arguments allowed Eugenics to become an acceptable practice. Advocates believed that getting rid of the feeble minded and mentally deficient would decrease the undesirable characteristic traits within the human gene pool and ultimately improve the human population. • 8. The Pupil By Henry James In the excerpt from The Pupil by Henry James, three very different characters find themselves intertwined because they all need something from each other. Through the eyes of an introverted and timid young man, James explains the intricate relationship between an old, aristocratic women, an eleven year old boy who needs help, and our main character who is in desperate need of money. Through elegant diction and advanced grammar, the author creates a prestigious and elite tone The third person point of view gives us insight on the internal conflict and also reveals a lot to the reader about the kind of person Pemberton is. A monetary man that isn t in the job for the right reasons. Our timid young man later evolves into Pemberton as we learn more about him, and the fat rich lady is referred to as Mrs. Moreen . James explains the name of the title as Pemberton worries frantically about the eleven year old boy who becomes The pupil . In doing this, he juxtaposes an outsider perspective of the characters with specific names to slowly make the poem personable as it progresses. As more information is disclosed, the more connected we become to the characters allowing us to understand their emotions and motives behind their actions. For example, we learn that Pemberton only accepts this job because he needs the money. If he didn t need the money it s implied that he most likely wouldn t take the job due to his lack of belief in his own skills. The tone of the poem fluxuates between formal and informal to explain what they all desire. James achieves this by using intelligent diction complemented with a simplistic undertone, by doing this he creates an opportunity to implement essential information to understand the ... ATP binds to all P2YRs except P2Y6R and P2Y14R12. Its binding characteristics exemplify the complexity of P2YR signalling: at low concentrations it is the only native agonist for P2Y11R, but at higher concentrations it functions as a partial agonist for P2Y1R and P2Y13R, or as an antagonist for human P2Y4R or P2Y12R11, 12, 15. Other nucleotides, such as ADP, UTP, UDP or UDP glucose, exhibit more specificity for individual P2YRs. For example, ADP activates P2Y1R, P2Y12R and P2Y13R, whereas UTP primarily binds to P2Y2R and P2Y4R, and to a lesser extent to P2Y6R, for which UDP is its preferred native ligand. P2Y14R is ... • 15. Hollow Face Impression Analysis The hollow face illusion is an illusion produced by ambiguity of visual depth processing (Gregory 1970). It occurs when a concave, hollow mask is perceived as a convex face i.e. with facial features protruding towards the observer (Hill and Johnston, 2007). Hill and Bruce (1993) propose that the illusion is a result of the contradictory information received from depth cues. Contrary to this, Hill and Johnston (2007) assert that this is not the case. Rather, they emphasise alternative explanations such as the familiarity of faces and a general inclination towards convexity. A number of studies support these assertions, and moreover provide evidence that suggests a number of factors are critical in creating the illusion. Primarily, these include motion, shading, and orientation. (Marr, 1982; Gregory, 1973; Hill and Bruce, 1993; Georgeson, 1979). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the case of the hollow face illusion, our brain knows what we are observing is a face, and that faces are typically associated with convex objects (Gregory, 1973). You can tell from Nicholsons facial expressions throughout the play on what he is thinking and what he might want to do next. Jack nicholsons character in the film is abundantly high thinking of himself, the way that he responds to the other officers is in a tone making it crystal clear that he is above them in rank, but he alslo has a short teemper throughout the film you will se him use sarcasm or anger to show his pig headedness. • 29. Nationalism vs Patriotism George Orwell wrote that nationalism was one of the worst enemies of peace. He defined nationalism as the feeling that your way of life, country, or ethnic group were superior to others. These types of feelings lead a group to attempt to impose their morality on any given situation. When those standards were not met, more often then not, war would result. In contrast he stated that patriotism was the feeling of admiration for a way of life etc. and the willingness to defend it against attack. The obvious difference between the two is that while patriotism is a passive attitude, nationalism is aggressive by nature. Orwell was writing this during the years just prior to World War Two when nationalism in Europe was running rampant. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On their side the United States began their policy of propping up a variety of dictatorships under the guise of preventing the spread of communism. It s debateable whether these initial actions were driven more by real politick then nationalism, one side trying to limit the other sides power and influence more then an expansion and imposition of a way of life. But in the end the justifications for actions began to take on the sound of nationalistic fervour whatever the original intent. American governments began wrapping themselves in the flag of protectors of freedom and democracy under more and more spurious circumstances. Meanwhile the Soviets claims of liberation from the chains of capitalism and oppression became harder to swallow during the post Stalin revelations of mass murders and famine. Nationalism has a history in both countries as far back as their beginnings. Under the Tsars the Russian empire was just as expansionistic as the Soviets stretching their sphere of influence from the Balkans to the near east. In the U. This led to the development of Belbin s Self Perception Inventory which initially identified eight distinct team roles (the ninth role of specialist was identified after the initial research). In 1981, Belbin s Self Perception Inventory was included in his book Management Teams: Why they succeed or fail . This inventory was derived from past versions. The 9 Belbin Team Roles are: Completer/Finisher, Chairman/Co ordinator, Monitor/Evaluator, Implementer, Resource Investigator, Plant, Shaper, Team worker, and Specialist. Belbin believed individuals have a preferred team role, alongside a secondary team role which would only show itself if the preferred team role was being played by another staff member or there was a gap in the team in which a role was not being played. Belbin suggested therefore, that the team role composition of a team may determine if it is successful or if it fails. Bruce Tuckman, an educational psychologist described a simple, easy to understand theory of group development in 1965. Tuckman argued that in order to function more effectively teams go through a process of group formation. Initially, this was defined as having four distinct stages although over a decade later a fifth stage was included. Tuckman explained that all groups will pass through each stage of development before they can achieve maximum effectiveness, stating this process may be subconscious. The five stages of group development Tuckman proposes are: Forming, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Deception And Trickery, Often Seen In Real Life, Is A Concept Deception and trickery, often seen in real life, is a concept well portrayed in William Shakespeare s Hamlet. In the play, as the conflict develops, Hamlet, King Claudius, and Ophelia, all use deception to achieve their goals. Hamlet, being the main character, has many instances of deceit. He starts out by feigning madness, then puts on a play to find out if the king killed his father, and finally switches out papers, sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their deaths. Hamlet meets with his dead father s ghost and learns that Claudius killed the deceased king. Polonius wants Ophelia to find out what Hamlet is doing while he and the king eavesdrop. Because Ophelia is required to listen to Polonius, she blatantly lies to Hamlet in their ensuing conversation. Hamlet and Ophelia talk saying, HAMLET. . . . Where s your father? OPHELIA. At home, my lord. HAMLET. Let the doors be shut upon him, that he may play the fool no where but in s own house. Farewell. (3.1.141 144) Through this conversation, Ophelia is forced to deceive Hamlet. However, Hamlet is not fooled. He knows something is up and doesn t disclose any pertinent information. In a way, this could really be considered Polonius s deception because he is the one really in control, not Ophelia. Either way, these deceptions are important in building conflict, contributing to the need for a resolution. Lastly, King Claudius uses deceit often throughout the play. • 32. The Dramatic Impact of The Witches in William... The Dramatic Impact of The Witches in William Shakespeare s Macbeth Witchcraft in the 17th centaury was frowned upon by the church as a result witches were feared and loathed in the community. Many people thought that they were directly connected to Lucifer (the devil). Their evidence of this was that the devils familiars came up from hell and drank the witches blood from devil spots (moles or birthmarks), in return for this blood he would grant them special powers such as the ability to fly, foul crops or kill at a glance. As a result of this propaganda created by the church thousands of innocent people were tried as witches and burnt at the stake. To be in a 17th centaury audience and have ... This enables them to see past the present in to the future such as when they say when the battles lost and won , this suggests that they already know the outcome they know more than you. The witches also speak of some very unusual things that suggests that they are not normal. One of the oddest things they say is Hover through the fog and filthy air giving you the impression that they can fly. They also chant fair is foul and foul is fair , which would make it appear that they have a warped perception of reality what you would perceive as foul they would perceive as fair meaning that they can bend the rules a little. This draws you in because you want to know what mischief they can create. In the production that I saw I thought that they carried out this very well with fantastic lighting and sound affects. The witches were dressed in simple black robes and rags, but while reciting there lines there was a battle going on behind them with men falling in all directions which provides a feeling of confusion and that they have more power then the men fighting. I thought that this was brilliant because it gave the beginning of the production a real dramatic exciting start to the play. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
