When Nehemiah s plan was put into action he started to receive opposition from surrounding nations.
Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites were the people that tried to halt the
building of the wall. When Sanballat heard of the rebuilding he became angry and mocked the Jews
saying, Can they revive the stones from the dusty ruble even the burned ones? Tobiah responded with
negativity, Even what they are building if a fox should jump on it, he would break their stone wall
(Neh 4:1 3). In verses 4 5 Nehemiah called out to the Lord against the people who are showing
opposition. Nehemiah asked the Lord to punish the opposition for trying to stop the Lord s plan and
discouraging his people. The wall was built to half the height, and the surrounding nations were
encouraged to work before the enemy started to affect the building. All of these enemies conspired to
come against Jerusalem because the breaches within the walls had been closed and they no longer had

The people prayed to God against the opposing nations, but they also set up guards. Nehemiah trusted
in the Lord, but he assembled defense because prayer does not eliminate the need to take practical
