play games he wouldn t want to and would throw a tantrum. I didn t think much of it and would just
go to my sister and we would just play instead. I thought that was normal. I was under the impression
that it was normal for kids like me to spend their whole afternoons in various waiting rooms for their
sibling s therapy. I didn t understand that instead most people went and played sports or had play

I Attended A Narcotics Anonymous ( Na ) Meeting
Meeting Description For the self help meeting in regards for my reaction paper, I attended a Narcotics
Anonymous (NA) meeting. NA is a nonprofit, community based, 12 step recovery organization for
recovering drug addicts (Bowens, 2011, p. 1). The meeting I attended took place outside on a Saturday
afternoon at Magnolia Park in Garden Grove, California. It is an open group tag meeting, where one
speaker will tag another person to share and welcome for anyone to attend. It was very easy to locate
the meeting, as it was right in front of the park s only parking lot with members sitting in a circle on
benches and lawn chairs. The meeting started at 12:00pm and ended around 1:30pm. The group
facilitator was a Caucasian man in his forties named Bob. Bob had been in and out of recovery for
nearly 16 years, but recently relapsed in August of 2015. He has experienced four overdoses since
then, and is on his way to working the 12 steps again. Bob has been sober for about six weeks now. In
the group meeting, there were 20 members (four female, 16 male) in this meeting, composed of 75%

The Pianist is based on the true story of a renowned Polish Jewish musician who lived through World
War 2 in Warsaw, Poland. At the start of the war, Jewish families had to wear white arm bands with a

concentration camps in packed railroad cars and the families who remained in Warsaw starved to

Everyone has cultural beliefs that may be passed down from generations, or in the society they live in,
and it is the way of leading life. It has been well documented that human immunodeficiency virus
(HIV) infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) have been the leading causes of
death among people living in South Africa. Over 1.8 million people have died from AIDS (Iwelunmor
Airhihenbuwa, 2012). The cultural practices of South Africa have influenced the wide spread of
HIV/AIDS in that country.
There is a need to take Zambian or African culture seriously in order to look at the salient elements of
cultural practices in rites of passage that influence the spread of HIV and AIDS (Moyo Muller, 2011).
Giving birth to a child is considered special, value and brings respect, and high societal status in South
African culture. If a woman has not gotten pregnant after some time of their marriage, the husband is
asked to make special arrangements with another woman to see if she gets pregnant by the husband. If
there is a problem with the husband, the family will make special arrangements with another man until
the woman conceives. This is kept secret and money is given as a gift for the favor. This is the culture

for all decisions, behaviour, and judgments we make. As a preservice teacher, it is imperative to work
continuously towards being able to offer an inclusive classroom environment, and it is essential that I
am aware of any potential biases that may unconsciously appear in my teaching practices. Therefore, I
need to be mindful of my values and attitudes at all times and consider a different discourse if these
