Joshua Bell
Art today is often portrayed as refined, enjoyable and exciting. The ornate or unique appearances
of museums and other cultural institutions, akin to majestic cathedrals and monuments, is a
public testament to what is often seen as society s value for art. However, beneath this
flamboyant façade, as Joshua Bell s social experiment demonstrates, art is still often grossly
underappreciated by society at large. The results of Bell s experiment as well as society s
perception of the definition of art show that society often judges art by its surroundings or exterior,
viewing art as an activity for the wealthy or those with means to enjoy art.
The distinct appearance of cultural institutions has often attested to the perceived value of art in
society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In January 2007, world renowned violinist Joshua Bell, with the outward appearance of a homeless
man, performed three pieces of music by Classical era composer Johannes Bach in a Washington,
D.C. metro station during the morning rush hour. During the one hour he performed, no one
recognized who he was; the vast majority of commuters, with the exception of children, quickly
ignored Bell, who was performing with a violin worth millions of dollars. This vast gulf between
expectation and reality, especially considering Bell had just packed a concert hall a few days
before, exemplified the very cosmetic perception many have toward art. As Bell s performance
demonstrated, people often judge art by its surroundings. Although Bell was performing a unique
piece of music, because he was not in a suit or on a stage, no one paid attention to him. To the
many passerby, Bell was just a homeless person performing what could not be considered art.
Although people profess great love for art and emphasize their love for art by erecting grand
monuments to culture or art, this attitude appears to be a mask hiding people s often very narrow
and skewed definition of

Fire Safety Engineering Technology Degree
As a kid I looked up to my twin brothers, Sandy and Randy, who were 19 years older than me.
When I was around 13 years old, I started tagging along with my brother, Sandy, who was a
volunteer firefighter. I loved running calls with Sandy, and knew that I would be a firefighter
when I grew up. I will never forget the time I went to a house fire with my brother. It was like
yesterday. The fire pager went off. Sandy turned on his red light, and we took off in his truck.
Before I knew it, we pulled up to a house with fire shooting out the first floor window, and Sandy
went to work as a firefighter. That was it. From that point on, I knew I would be a firefighter.
As a student in middle and high school, I struggled with ADHD. Those struggles made me doubt
myself when it came to academics. After trying for four years, I finally became a Charlotte
Firefighter when I was 22 years old and recently engaged to my fiance. I knew that this was my
chosen profession, but I also realized that to advance in it, I would have to face my academic fears.
What makes the man I am today ready for the academic challenges I so struggled with as a kid?
There are two reasons I am ready to undertake UNCC s Fire Safety Engineering Technologydegree:
First, I am in the profession I fell in love with as a kid; in other words I love being a firefighter so

Short-Term and Long-Term Memory Loss
Forgetting in Short Term and Long Term Memory: The memory of human beings is similar to that
of computers because it allows individuals to store information for later or future use. However, the
storage of information in humans involves three major processes i.e. encoding, storage, and
retrieval. The encoding process basically involves transforming data into meaningful form like
association with an existing image, memory, or sound. This is followed by holding on to the
information through a physiological change, which is the actual storage of the information. The
final stage in this process is retrieval where the stored information is brought out, which is a
reversal of the encoding process ( Memory, Intelligence, and States of Mind, 2011). Since humans
are more complex, they have three different memory storage abilities i.e. sensory memory, short
term memory, and long term memory.
Short Term and Long Term Memory: Short term memory is the process with which information in
the sensory memory is transferred to a person s awareness or consciousness. The information
becomes currently active in the individual like talking to a friend, reading an article, or writing a
paper. While short term memory lasts longer then sensory memory, it still has very limited capacity
(Cowan, 2009). In contrast, long term memory is relatively permanent and virtually unlimited with
regards to storage capacity. The permanence of this type of memory storage capability originates
from the fact

The Role Of Education In The New Zealand Government
Assignment 1 Three related pieces of writing
With the New Zealand election looming in just under six weeks, politics has dominated national
news, sparking interest for even a twenty year old university student like myself. Having never
voted in an election, my knowledge of the political system, and the terminology for that matter is
far from adequate. Stepping into the shoes of a politician, this paper has allowed me to examine
the two key ideologies that have shaped the radical reforms in New Zealand politics and more
specifically, how these have influenced the role of education.

Throughout this period, it is arguably mentioned that this was the closest New Zealand had
reached to a fair system. Carpenter (date) manifested this, indicating that for low socioeconomic
households, this was the time theoretically, that they could achieve, as there was well managed
equality to the access of resources across the social strata. Unfortunately, what comes up must
always come down, and what was once a stable society, fell in the wake of the 1940s, forcing tight
economic controls and further weakening the government after several global economic crises
(Rashburge, 2013). This was the downfall of social democracy, resulting in the uprise of the
National Party.
One of the most prominent e¬xamples of social democracy was the New Zealand Milk in
Schools Schemes, which was inaugurated by the Labour Government in 1936. The purpose was
to provide school children with free milk to improve the health of young New Zealanders and
make use of the surplus milk (Ministry for Culture and Heritage, 2017). Up until 1967, thousands
of children gulped down their daily ration of milk. Ministry for Culture and Heritage (2017) added
that this scheme arose not from financial inability, but rather from the lack of knowledge of the
necessary dietary needs

Fan C. Baker Lab
The purpose of this lab was to determine the murderer of Fan C. Baker given samples of a pen
used to falsify Fan C. Baker s last will and testament and an unknown white solid from the crime
scene using both paper chromatography and physical property tests. We accomplished this
purpose by conducting a series of tests on both the crime scene samples and a collection of
substances known to be possible matches. To determine the nature of the ink sample, we used
paper chromatography to separate and examine the various pigmented chemicals in each possible
type of marker. After careful cross examination, we determined that ink sample B (the ink found at
the crime scene) matched the ink sample of the Vis Г vis marker. Both ink samples displayed a
range of pigmentation from light to dark grey, with a bright blue rim on the ethyl alcohol
chromatography test and a yellow pink magenta purple blue progression on the water

We discovered that the acetic acid reacted only with baking soda and sample #2. The acetic acid
did not react with the sucrose or the table salt. During the conductivity test, the conductivity meter
showed that the aqueous form of each substance, sample 2 included, conducted electricity. As the
conductivity test produced no conclusive data, we based our determination of sample 2 s nature
on the reaction with acetic acid. Sample 2 s reaction was only comparable to that of baking soda,

The Relationship Between Institutional Holdings And...
The purpose of the article is to find whether there is a relationship between institutional holdings
and payout policy in U.S. public firms between 1980 and 1996. In the begging there is an abstract,
that states the aim of the research and the reached findings. There are 7 sections in the article. The
first one is introduction, where the authors explain what results are reached and carefully introduce
the readers to the structure of the article. In the next section the hypotheses is derived. After that,
section 3, the variables and the data is described. The tests begin from section 4 to section 6. In
those sections the authors use non parametric tests, regression analyses and vector autoregressive
specifications in order to reach their results. The last section is the conclusion of the article, where
the major findings are listed. The authors find that institutions prefer firms that pay dividends to
ones which don t. Moreover, within dividendpaying firms, institutions are not attracted to high
dividends. They also find a positive relation between repurchases and institutional holdings. Their
results also suggest that institutions prefer firms that repurchase regularly to firms that repurchase
sporadically. They don t find evidence that an increase in institutional holdings in firms is followed
by an increase in dividends or repurchases. Their article has been cited 412 times by other authors.

Another Turn of the Crank by Wendell Berry Essay
Another Turn of the Crank by Wendell Berry Wendell Berry s Another Turn of the Crank is
about sustainability of the environment. He believes that you must first start at a local level
then sustainability can be accomplished at a global level. This is the same idea that was
expressed at the start of this course, think globally, act locally, which means the consequences of
our actions effect the world. As I address the some of the chapters in the book I will associate
how Berry s ideas link into the material discussed in this class. Farming and the Global Economy
is the first chapter of the book. He starts with the history of farmers during WWII. The farmers
were quickly becoming a minority because the nation was not supportive... Show more content on

Times magazine reported in 1910 there were 32 million farmers living on farms and in 1991 32
percent of farm managers and 86 percent of farmers did not live on the farm that they took care
of. Now there isn t even an agricultural class. The book goes on to talk about rape and run
logging in Montana. We talked about the fly by night corporations in class. Both are the same
just different terminology. In Montana, the Champion International Corp. went on a tree
cutting binge in Montana, which leveled forests. They then left leaving behind million of
people unemployed and over 1,000 square acres stripped. This leaves people poor and the land
trashed. This is only one case, but I know we talked about this in class. These corporations suck
everything they can out of a community until there isn t anything left for them. They decided to
leave one day and never think twice about the people. That s why Berry has come up with a list
of actions a community can do to help their own community flourish. I won t list them all, but I
will name a few important ones like: always put local needs first, develop small scale industries,
strive to produce as much of the community s own energy as possible, see that the old and young
take care of each other, and so on. These actions would help a community grow stronger in many
ways. Conserving Forest Communities deals with forestry in Kentucky. Berry is from

The Pros And Cons Of Mountaintop Removal
Did you know that mountaintop removal coal provides around three percent of our countries
electricity? That does not seem like much, especially considering all the damage it causes. Large
areas of wildlife habitat have been destroyed so these mountaintop removal companies can gain and
make a profit. These companies do not care about the people in the communities they are hurting.
Companies also do not understand that animals can become exterminated from this, and they have
been. Animals that live in the mountains and streams lose their homes and can be killed. In
September 2004, a boulder went careening off a mountaintop removal site in western Virginia. It
smashed through a mobile home, killing a three year old boy in his sleep (McNeil).... Show more

These explosives destroy around six hundred feet of mountain soil. According to Mountaintop
Removal 101, More than five hundred mountains have been destroyed by mountaintop removal.
Box cut mining, steep slope mining, cross ridge mining, area mining, mountaintop mining and area
mining are all types of mountaintop removal. This removal process usually takes place in east
Kentucky, southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia, and in east Tennessee (AppalachianVoices).
First, the company has to clear the area of land on the mountaintop. Second, they start blasting.
Usually this includes using millions of explosives and machines to blow up the mountaintop. Next
on the list of steps would be the digging. The leftover waste is then dumped into rivers and
contaminates the water. Coal companies are legally allowed to dump the debris because of the
Clean Water Act. The next step is the processing of the coal by chemically treating it. After the
miners see the coal, they start remove it using huge coal moving machines and take it to a coal
processing plant. After the coal is chemically treated, the company is required to, by law, build on
the flattened land. This way the land will not be wasted. Though it is said that mountaintop
removal is the most effective and most cost effective way to operate, many people say it is harmful
to the environment. Mountaintop removal can potentially expose many locals to safety. It has been
banned in many places because of the hazardous effects it can

2.4. HDFS File System
Hadoop distributed file system is written in Java for Hadoop framework, it is scalable and
portable FS. HDFS provide shell commands and Java application programming interface (API).
[12] Data in a Hadoop cluster is broken down into smaller pieces (called blocks) and distributed
throughout the cluster. In this way, the map and reduce functions can be executed on smaller
subsets of larger data sets, and this provides the scalability that is needed for big data processing.
[12] A Hadoop cluster has nominally a single namenode plus a cluster of datanodes, although
redundancy options are available for the namenode due to its criticality. Each datanode serves up
blocks of data over the network using a block protocol specific to HDFS. The file system uses TCP
/IP sockets for communication. Clients use remote procedure calls (RPC) to communicate with
each other.
Fig 5. HDFS Architecture [19]
HDFS stores large files across multiple machines. It achieves reliability by replicating the data
across multiple hosts, and hence theoretically does not require redundant array of independent disks

The Gold Bridge And The Bridge Collapse
Silver Bridge
4.1 Background
The Point Pleasant Bridge or so called the Silver Bridge was designed by the J.E. Greiner
Company and built by the Gallia County Ohio River Bridge Company to connect Point Pleasant,
West Virginia to Gallipolis, Ohio. It was designed as a two lane eye bar suspension type bridge,
measuring 2,235 feet in total length, including the approaches. The bridge was the first eye bar
suspension bridge of its type to be constructed in the United States. [26] Figure 4.1: The Bridge
before collapse. [26] During the early evening of December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed
during a period of heavy traffic and 46 people were killed. Another nine people were injured. Of
the 37 vehicles on the bridge, 31 fell during the collapse. After some forty years of service, the
Point Pleasant Bridge collapsed without warning. [27] Figure 4.2: The Bridge after collapse.
[26] The bridge was constructed of carbon steel, which tends to crack. Many cracks were found
throughout the bridge among extensive corrosion. Upon investigation, it was found that the
collapse was due to a defective eye bar that experienced a cleavage fracture in the lower part of
its head which was resulted from stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue. [26] Since the eye bars
were not designed to be redundant, failure in one eye bar would disrupt the continuity of the
suspension system. This disruption is what caused the bridge to collapse suddenly. The location of

The Argument Of Concept Over Skill In Contemporary Art
for my dissertation, I intend to explore the argument of concept over skill in contemporary
applied arts. It is a debate that has cropped up many times in my experiences with creating
contemporary art pieces and in my jewellery practice and is an area with very little defined lines.
In my essay I will investigate contemporary artists works and how much concept or skill has
impacted on their creation of successful artworks, exploring the idea that the works could
survive with either concept or skill alone. My specific focus is the cotemporary jewellers. The
word skill is very closely associated with the idea of a physical object, a very tangible thing that
we can easily understand, that to create such a thing. requires skill, which in turn has required a
degree of qualification or knowledge, patience or time. Concept on the other hand is not equated
with an object, more a deep thought out, intellectually conceived idea that only the creator could
ever truly understand and a stabile medium needs to be poured inorder to convey these concepts.
You could argue that yes an artist will always find an item or a variety of pre made objects in order
to convey their concepts but it is a skill to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

French Migration To Australia
Migration in a globalized society is no longer determine by the dichotomy of push and pull
factors. Many people who re looking to migrate for a multitude of reasons and likewise
governments throughout the world are looking to bring in people who add to the labour market
and for cultural exchange purposes. I interviewed my French neighbour Pierre. His decision to
move Australia on a working holiday visa (417 visa) was a combination of a desire to explore the
world, find employment and that Australia was a willing participant for his migration. Pierre has
discovered cultural differences, namely an openly casually racist society and the realities of a
labour based migration system. Pierre s migration experience has similar characteristics... Show

Pierre has straddled the positive and negative aspects of the visa program. He has been able to
find work in his field relatively easily however he has not be immune to the exploitation of
foreign workers by employers seeking to minimize their wages by hiring 417 visa workers. A
7:30 Report story by Matt Peacock investigated the systematic exploitation of Taiwanese
backpackers at a meat works owned by small goods manufacturer Primo. Setup at a distance by
labour hire companies, 90% of the work force are on working holiday visas. They are pressured

Therefore the workers are made to work unreasonable hours but have little power to refuse the

The Human Reproduction Act, An Individual
Under s.60 of the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, an individual (a) is liable, on conviction on
indictment, to a fine not exceeding $500,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten
years, or to both; or (b) is liable, on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding $250,000 or to
imprisonment for a term not exceeding four years, or to both for not complying with the guidelines
set out regarding the duties of the reproductionof a child. A surrogate mother is defined as a woman
who carries a fetus conceived through an assisted reproduction procedure which is derived from
the genes of a donor or donors, and with the intent of surrendering such child at the time of birth
(AHRA, 2004). However, there is still ambiguity felt between surrogates and parents related to what
the law sets out as their legal duties in conceiving a child, and this is also pertinent in relation to the
context of a working contract. Having said that, this essay aims at addressing the unclarity, pointing
to the main arguments in favor of the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, and how the decision was
aimed to safeguard the rights of those involved; including the child, and to prevent culpability
issues within the health sector and many others linked to the overall process.
To understand why this is a highly controversial issue today, we must look at some of the main
objectives of why this law was enacted and the compromises made in order to achieve satisfaction
of all. First, what are the

What Are The Four Stages Of The 2007 Financial Crisis
The 2007 Financial Crisis
Eight years later and the United States is still recovering from the Financial Crisis of 2007. When
housing prices peaked in the summer of 2006, the downturn of the housing market began. The first
indications of the financial crisis were apparent in falling prices of the securities, and by July 2007
the price declines were outrageous. The events of this particular crisis can be divided into four
major phases. The first three were much more severe, but the fourth phase finally started to show
some improvement in the state of the financial situation in the United States. To understand the
causes of the housing prices peaking, it is necessary to understand the events beginning in 2001.

Nothing in the world is perfect. In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, LeGuin Ursula shows

it means to be happy.
LeGuin says Joyous! How is one to tell about joy? How to describe the citizens of Omelas? , this is

Captain Knows Analysis
Often times in a theatre troupe, three different groups tend to stand out amongst the crowd. In this
troupe, there are the Captain Knows how s, the Diamond Shiner s, and the Queen s of Drama.
They all have their perks, except when their special instincts take over and steal the show.
The first group is the Captain Knows how s. This group is often the shy, quiet personality in the
whole troupe. However, if the director needs a task done they always find this group. No matter
what, or how hard the task is, the Captain Knows how s will never cease to amaze. Beware, they
may seem friendly, but if caught in the midst of them and without a tool in hand, know that death

Carmax Hbr Case Analysis Essay
Industry Analysis Used car market was a huge market with attractive growth opportunities
during 1980s. It was estimated worth $ 375 billion market. Competition was so deeply fragmented

How Did Rasputin Influence The Royal Family
Grigory Yefimovich Rasputin was born January 10th, 1869 in the small Siberian village of
Pokrovskoe. At a young age some villagers believed Rasputin had the ability to employ
supernatural powers such as having visions and curative powers. Varying accounts of Rasputin s

Rasputin was beaten. However, that very same evening two other peasants followed the accused
and observed him leading the stolen horse from his shed and into the forest (Aprelenko, 2011).

Exposure to drugs and alcohol directly increases the amount of risky sexual activity students
engage in, and the college environment provides an opportunity to have sexual encounters with
multiple partners, even in a casual context, often without condom use or other forms of
contraception. These students are at heightened risk for sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, and
unwanted pregnancies. Research in this area has relied on the theory of planned behavior (TPB)
to identify beliefs and attitudes that might predict sexual risk taking. However, the TPB model
does not take into consideration other factors that might influence sexual behaviors such as past
sexual history, moral beliefs, self esteem, family expectation, and peer influence. College is a
time for experimentation and discovering the world around you. More importantly, it is when one
discovers him or herself. Being away from home is a new found freedom that most freshmen have
not experienced before. On college campuses and more specifically historically black institutions
students are becoming a victim of their own freedoms. Sexually transmitted infections are on the

Compare And Contrast Loyalists And Patriots
Loyalist VS. Patriot William Franklin said to his father, Benjamin Franklin, in a letter at the start

whether or not to stay loyal to Britain. While the Patriots had more followers, the Loyalists had
strong reasons to remain loyal to the British government. While there were many advantages, the
key and most essential arguments are the following; Britain gave the colonists safety, the taxes and
acts that the British put in place were to help and not hurt the colonists, and the British Army would
continue to be on their side. Initially, the English gave the colonists a safe place to settle and start a
new life with promising opportunities. The British gained a great deal of land when they defeated

Social Class Vs Middle Class
It has been a well known fact for several decades now, that the middle/working class is the
backbone of the United States. This economic class of Americans are what hold the country
stable through their hard work and purchasing power. However, lately there has been a few jabs
thrown at the middle class, such as the 2007 2008 recession, problems with minimum wage and its
efficacy to create a comfortable life, and political matchups between candidates that reflect the
middle class in different ways. I believe that the middle class has had to make decisions that will
benefit them financially but hurt their desires such as, having a fewer amount of kids. To begin,
money is what keeps the United Statesmoving day in and day out. People wake up to get money,
sleep shorter hours to make more money, and place a gate around their wants to be able to keep
in as much money as possible. One want that I believe is being affected by this is the desire to
have children. Children are precious blessings from God to us and we have a hand in creating
them. However, children are expensive and the strain that they can put on parents financially is
innumerable. I believe that couples are opting to have children depending on their financial

He tells her the Flamingo Hotel threw her out and she s practically was told by the Major to get

of a seventeen year old boy she d gotten mixed up with! (135). When Stella asks Stanley if he

The world works around how people speak. Raymond Carter s Popular Mechanics takes this rule
and gives it a new meaning. At first glance, one might think that the man in the story is said to use
all of his might to rip the child apart with the woman. As the woman teases the father, telling him

solutions as well. Bringing the issues to the public knowledge is only the first step in correcting our
flawed educationsystem. There are certain classes that are more common than others,
specifically regarding the general education classes such as English and math courses. However
colleges also offer less common classes that certain students may have an interest in. The
problem with these smaller classes is that with the poor attendance records, the classes could be
cancelled as the college sees it as a waste of money; this is one of many reasons why professors
give out unearned A s (Staples 329). To fix this problem, colleges should look not at the
attendance sheet, but instead the overall GPA s of the students in the class. This not only will
show if the students who are going to the class are learning and comprehending the material, but
also can compare to the more popular classes with higher attendance that may not have as good of
grades. Another solution would be giving the class time to grow popular. If a professor is teaching
a new class for the

The Social Action Theory and Symbolic Interactionism Essay
The Social Action Theory and Symbolic Interactionism Max Weber believed that individuals were
the key to society. He developed social action theory, the purpose of which was to find out why
individuals function in certain ways. He thought that every social action performed by an individual
had a meaning attached to it. Social actions are the result of conscious thought processes that take
into consideration the reactions of other individuals. Weber identified four types of social action
which include, reason (an instrumentally rational or calculated action), value or rational action
(determined by belief), emotion or effectual action (dependent upon the feelings of the individual),
and traditional... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These properties could be exchanged for money in the economic market he was of the opinion that
this position in the economic market place determined class position so that in theory there would
be as many class positions as economic positions. Therefore the class structure of society is
essentially an occupation structure. Social action theory recognises other divisions apart from
simply class and also recognises that consumption of goods (by which status groups are stratified)
is just as important as the production (by which class is stratified). It also draws attention to the
importance of the individual and their conscious actions. It does not however place enough
emphasis on class divisions, as it tends to concentrate more on status. Symbolic interactionists
reject structure and believe that to study society, the only way to do so is to concentrate on the
individual. Both theories believe in understanding the individual through the use of empathy.
George Herbert Mead was mainly concerned with the importance of language. Language
distinguishes humans from animals and allows us to be aware of our individuality. The use of
symbols is a key element of language. They are used to give meanings to particular events or
objects and are learned by socialisation. Humans make them to assist them to

Theme Of Identity In Treasure Island
In a quote by Joseph Kestner he said, In Treasure Island, Hawkins is forced to achieve an identity,
but this process is riddled with ambiguity, including the fact that Jim commits murder and remains
haunted by the experience as a nightmare, (______). He specializes in masculinity theory from
novels written in the late nineteenth century. Kestner is able to relate Jim because he is forced to
become a new person, kill a manto save his own life, and questions why situations happen. Wyeth
suggests that Jim is about take on a courageous mysterious journey by using Jim s poses, gender
roles, darkness, and specific details to portray his maturation throughout the novel, thereby
suggesting that we are all subject to transitions that are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of darkness and shadowing conveys a sense of mystery and of the unknown, altogether
foreshadowing events to come. Jim is displayed under a shadow and his mother is in the
sunlight next to the house. Wyeth designed this image to show that Jim is about to go on a
mysterious journey, and his mother is going to stay where she is. Jim states, I said goodbye to
mother and the cove where I had lived since I was born, and the dear old Admiral Benbow since
he was repainted, no longer quite so dear, (57). Jim is walking away from everything that he has
ever known and starting his new life as an adult. Jim s house and his mother are illuminated by
the light to show that they are going to stay in a safe, known place; meanwhile, the darker figures,
like Jim, are heading to an unknown destination. The use of darkness shows that Jim has a dark
path ahead of him. Normally, darkness is associated with evil and corruption, which is fitting for
Jim s path. The use of darkness can foreshadow later in the novel to when Jim kills Israel Hands.
Ultimately, when Jim kills a man this shows how he became corrupt along his adventure. When Jim
killed Hands, this showed his transition from innocence to corruption, which can also be viewed as
his maturation to an adult. All transitions can mature us in both good and detrimental ways this

Adams vs. Jefferson
The Tumultuous Election of 1800
Analytical Book Review
Adams vs Jefferson, The Tumultuous Election of 1800, describes the events of the infamous United
States Presidential Election of 1800, the election that forever changed the landscape of American
politics and reestablished the principles of the American Revolution. The election of 1800 was a
battle of two political powerhouses: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. They were two of America
s founding fathers who were once great friends, but were thrown against each other as adversaries
with the future of America in their hands.
John Ferling, the author, began by describing the events that occurred just prior to the election, and
painted the picture of John Adams travelling to Washington D.C. from his Massachusetts farm and
Thomas Jefferson from his hilltop lair of Monticello in Virginia symbolizing the differences among
Adam s northeastern simple farming roots and Jefferson s extravagant southern slave owning
background. From the start, the author explains (without tipping his hat to the debacle the system
would cause in the 1800 election) how in the 1796 and 1800 elections, the Constitution required the
practice of each political party nominating two presidential candidates, with the candidates with the
most votes becoming President and the second most becoming Vice President. The Federalists
nominated Adams and Charles Pinckney from South Carolina;

Writing Skills Process Analysis
Within English 219, we have already learned a vital set of writing skills, that will allow for the
improvement of essays, and summaries that must be written for future assessments. Some of
these skills that would be relevant for achieving general writing improvement could be ideas
such as thesis development, structuring and planning, or more specific examples when actually
fleshing out the essay such as elements of grammar and style. Thesis development which is
crucial so that ideas can be fully explained and related back to a point which can be interpreted as
an overarching theme for the entire paper, and allows the reader to interpret the topic of not only
the essay but of each paragraph. Taking a step back we looked in class at the subject... Show more

Voice was the main stylistic element that we discussed in class, and it is the role of voice that
allows for the flow of the paper to remain constant and the reader to remain engaged within a
paper. Without proper voice, the paper can be confusing to the reader and creates issues of flow
while reading the article of work, even worse is the mixing of voices which causes mass
disorganization and causes a piece of work to be hard to interpret and comprehend. Within our
entire English class so far, even though it has only been a short few weeks, we have invested
time into learning crucial techniques to improve writing for academic purposes. Whether this
writing be that of planning out major writing assignments in advance with inkshedding and
outlining, our designing a thesis so that one s ideas can be properly developed within a paper.
Another aspect we have learned it how to properly convey style elements within a paper such as
voice as to allow the flow for the reader to be constant and avoid interruption. Together these ideas
of planning, thesis development, and elements of style allow for an essay to be powerful and
consistent within the realm of

The World of Musical Theatre
Music can be traced back to the beginning of humanity. It has been an essential and crucial part of
human society and its development. In the sense of Musical Theatre, it is referred to the art of
telling stories through or with songs. This art can be traced all the way back to the Ancient
Greeks (5th century BC), where music was used to accompany their stage works. It has been
said that Sophocles composed his own music to accompany his own stage plays. In Greek
theatre, a Greek Chorus was used in the play to comment on the actions. They were a part of the
plot of the show, but no musical solos were present. The chorus was used also to be the conscious
of the audience or as a sounding board for the main characters.
Using the traditions of Greek Theatre, the Romans later replicated and expanded on the idea. The
expansion evolved into the use of orchestral accompaniment for songs and dances in 3rd Century
BC Plautus comedies. This later progressed in the Middle Ages with traveling minstrels and
traveling performers performing popular songs and slapstick comedy. Religious Drama s became
popular in the 12th and 13th centuries, combining church chants as a liturgical teaching tools such
as The Play of Herod and The Play of Daniel.
By the time of Renaissance, the Religious Dramas have developed into an Italian tradition called
commedia dell arte where clowns improvise their ways through familiar stories. From there, Opera
Buffa derived from the

Essay On 1960s Religion
The 1960s was a rapid, evolutionary new burst in religious change. People during this era ignored
their parents and grandparents values, and made their own. This caused a dramatic decrease in
churchgoing numbers, and christian values in the south. These changes can be connected with the
direction the world was going. Politics, mobility, and great leadership had a huge impact on the
religionof the 1960s. After this period, Christians still, even today, try to return the values of
traditionalism (Matthews).
The politics of the time brought great change, president John F. Kennedy, was the first Catholic
president of the United states. The mobility of the times brought new ideas to the American south,
and denounced protestant thought. The immigration of 1965 opened the U.S. up to massive
immigration. Many immigrants from all over Asia came to America during this time bringing their
ancient religions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have never been a believer of fundamental values and interpreting the bible literally. However,
religion is so deeply stained into the fabric of the south, I can not imagine a south without the
strong influence of religion it has. It is amusing to me, that we can not agree on one united
church. We are so different in our faiths, everywhere you look here has a church with its own
unique faiths. I do not know why, but I feel like religion gave the southern people a sense of
righteousness during the 1960s. I feel like the southern people knew their God would have wanted
them separate from blacks, and try to block out the rest of worlds changes from changing the South.
We try to instill these religious values in our culture I think to try and keep morals and values alive.
Except, humans do not need religion to know the difference between right or wrong. Without the
reevaluation of southern identity during the 1960s, the reevaluation may have not turned out the
way it

Inhumanity Theme In Night
In the memoir Night, the narrator Elie Wiesel recounts a moment when he started to lose his
faith due to his experiences at the concentration camps, for example, ВЁ But now, I was no
longer able to lament. On the contrary, I felt very strong. I was no longer able to lament God the
accused. My eyes had opened and i was alone, terribly alone in a world without God, without
man,ВЁ (Wiesel 68). Wiesel was a very faithful and hopeful boy but due to his experiences in the
concentration camp, he lost his faith in God and in others. He believed that there was no God
because of the things he would see and the overwhelming inhumanity he would suffer. Two
significant themes related to inhumanity discussed in the book Night by Elie Wieselare loss of faith
and becoming closer to loved ones.
One theme in Nght is that inhumanity can cause loss of faith. To clarify, Wiesel lost his faith in
god and in men. He saw the pain and inhumanity in the camps. He saw no hope. Wiesel says,

very valuable for him. In addition, Wiesel s father never showed his feelings before the camps.
He didn t have good bonds with his family. My father was a cultured man, rather unsentimental.
He rarely displayed his feelings, not even within family, and was more involved with the welfare
of others with that of his own kin, (Wiesel 4). He shows that before any of the concentration
camps, Wiesel and his father were never close but when they got in the camps, they both quickly
knew that they needed each other to live and survive. In conclusion, the inhumanity in the camps
causes people to become closer to loved

Domestic Violence In Herman s Trauma And Recovery
When Trauma and Recovery was first published in 1992, it was hailed as a groundbreaking work.
In the intervening years, Herman s volume has changed the way we think about and treat
traumatic events and trauma victims. In a new afterword, Herman chronicles the incredible
response the book has elicited and explains how the issues surrounding the topic have shifted
within the clinical community and the culture at large. Trauma and Recovery brings a new level
of understanding to a set of problems usually considered individually. Herman draws on her own

The Violence And Drug Abuse
In our days many people tend to listen to music almost anywhere they go. But unfortunately
teenagers are the ones that get influenced by music the most, as they are less developed than the
adults. In today s days many singers and rappers that sing and rap about the drugs and violence.
And for some reason that s what teenagers prefer. The example of this singers would be O.T
Genasis, Wiz Khalifa and Chief Keef. All these singers and rappers promote the violenceand drug
abuse in our society. In result, children become less successful in the society that they live and their
physical abilities become less prominent. Resulting in very weaker generation.
As a part of Chicago s violent community, Chief Keef is known for his rap songs that only talk
about drugs, violence and women. Chief Keef is also one of the most notable artists among the
teenagers in Chicago. As many teenagers listen to Chief Keef s lyrics, unfortunately many
teenagers get influenced by it. In one of the Chief Keef s songs called I don t like , Chief Keef raps
I got a bad bitch, yeah that bitch right. We smoke dope all day, all night. By rappingthat, many
young teenagers start thinking that smoking marijuana all day and all night is a cool thing because
Chief Keef does that and many teenagers want to be like him. And as these teenagers get slightly
older they become addicted to marijuana and then start taking much harder drugs. Also, Chief Keef
through his lyrics promotes violence. As almost every song

should never have been like this. Now in I hear America singing it shows the pure, lively, and

Dorothea Lange
Have you ever heard of a photographer who impacted someone s life so great that they weren t
feeling stalled and stranded anymore? Well, Dorothea Lange was an innovative photographer who
made families not hurt anymore during the Great Depression, in the 1930s.
With her camera , she recorded and pictured the despair and uncertainty of the urban unemployed
and the poverty of the migrant families who lived in the roadside camps. She had a passion to
capture every one hurting in food, clothing, water, also Dorothea captured families trying to get

She was very well known for the pictures taken of this mother and her ever so many kids. In the
Migrant Mother photo, Lange captured a mother sitting there with children wrapped around her ,
needy hungry, and eager for more. As the children were hungry the mother was having, the
children wrap around her like a shawl too big to crawl back in. She was stuck with nothing.
After the peas freeze on the vine, they feed on wild birds. Then they feed on dust. The statement
feed on dust can be looked at by Dorothea taking the pictures of Migrant Mother for the children
to be starving and have nothing. This mother that she photographed was looking for another way
for her and her children but it was useless and no where to go . The mother pictures were so
widely known and seen that she insisted on another photo, because she didn t want to be known as
one picture photographer. Many of Lange s photos borrow technique from the lexicon of
modernism. It was all very dramatic and dynamic in compositions. Langes techniques were both
neutral and detached. By, her remaining creative and off set, she put together great images showing
strength through suffering, She was daring and captured every detail she could. Lange would climb
to any extent to get the best shot of the landscaped and peoples desperations. Throughout her career
documenting the Great Depression, Lange took great pains to include detailed captions with her
photographer. Lange had an uncanny ability to put a subject of the subjects being photographed
during that time. She did whatever she could do to make the men , women, and children, to feel
comfortable with her and the camera. She felt that by speaking and spending time with them was
what she needed to do. Lange helped families stranded by only capturing their faces and sending
them into the city editor, which then she got thousands of supplies sent to migrants. Out in the

  • 3. Joshua Bell Art today is often portrayed as refined, enjoyable and exciting. The ornate or unique appearances of museums and other cultural institutions, akin to majestic cathedrals and monuments, is a public testament to what is often seen as society s value for art. However, beneath this flamboyant faГ§ade, as Joshua Bell s social experiment demonstrates, art is still often grossly underappreciated by society at large. The results of Bell s experiment as well as society s perception of the definition of art show that society often judges art by its surroundings or exterior, viewing art as an activity for the wealthy or those with means to enjoy art. The distinct appearance of cultural institutions has often attested to the perceived value of art in society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In January 2007, world renowned violinist Joshua Bell, with the outward appearance of a homeless man, performed three pieces of music by Classical era composer Johannes Bach in a Washington, D.C. metro station during the morning rush hour. During the one hour he performed, no one recognized who he was; the vast majority of commuters, with the exception of children, quickly ignored Bell, who was performing with a violin worth millions of dollars. This vast gulf between expectation and reality, especially considering Bell had just packed a concert hall a few days before, exemplified the very cosmetic perception many have toward art. As Bell s performance demonstrated, people often judge art by its surroundings. Although Bell was performing a unique piece of music, because he was not in a suit or on a stage, no one paid attention to him. To the many passerby, Bell was just a homeless person performing what could not be considered art. Although people profess great love for art and emphasize their love for art by erecting grand monuments to culture or art, this attitude appears to be a mask hiding people s often very narrow and skewed definition of ... • 4. Fire Safety Engineering Technology Degree As a kid I looked up to my twin brothers, Sandy and Randy, who were 19 years older than me. When I was around 13 years old, I started tagging along with my brother, Sandy, who was a volunteer firefighter. I loved running calls with Sandy, and knew that I would be a firefighter when I grew up. I will never forget the time I went to a house fire with my brother. It was like yesterday. The fire pager went off. Sandy turned on his red light, and we took off in his truck. Before I knew it, we pulled up to a house with fire shooting out the first floor window, and Sandy went to work as a firefighter. That was it. From that point on, I knew I would be a firefighter. As a student in middle and high school, I struggled with ADHD. Those struggles made me doubt myself when it came to academics. After trying for four years, I finally became a Charlotte Firefighter when I was 22 years old and recently engaged to my fiance. I knew that this was my chosen profession, but I also realized that to advance in it, I would have to face my academic fears. What makes the man I am today ready for the academic challenges I so struggled with as a kid? • 8. Short-Term and Long-Term Memory Loss Forgetting in Short Term and Long Term Memory: The memory of human beings is similar to that of computers because it allows individuals to store information for later or future use. However, the storage of information in humans involves three major processes i.e. encoding, storage, and retrieval. The encoding process basically involves transforming data into meaningful form like association with an existing image, memory, or sound. This is followed by holding on to the information through a physiological change, which is the actual storage of the information. The final stage in this process is retrieval where the stored information is brought out, which is a reversal of the encoding process ( Memory, Intelligence, and States of Mind, 2011). Since humans are more complex, they have three different memory storage abilities i.e. sensory memory, short term memory, and long term memory. Short Term and Long Term Memory: Short term memory is the process with which information in the sensory memory is transferred to a person s awareness or consciousness. The information becomes currently active in the individual like talking to a friend, reading an article, or writing a paper. While short term memory lasts longer then sensory memory, it still has very limited capacity (Cowan, 2009). In contrast, long term memory is relatively permanent and virtually unlimited with regards to storage capacity. The permanence of this type of memory storage capability originates from the fact ... The Role Of Education In The New Zealand Government Assignment 1 Three related pieces of writing With the New Zealand election looming in just under six weeks, politics has dominated national news, sparking interest for even a twenty year old university student like myself. Having never voted in an election, my knowledge of the political system, and the terminology for that matter is far from adequate. Stepping into the shoes of a politician, this paper has allowed me to examine the two key ideologies that have shaped the radical reforms in New Zealand politics and more specifically, how these have influenced the role of education. Throughout this period, it is arguably mentioned that this was the closest New Zealand had reached to a fair system. Carpenter (date) manifested this, indicating that for low socioeconomic households, this was the time theoretically, that they could achieve, as there was well managed equality to the access of resources across the social strata. Unfortunately, what comes up must always come down, and what was once a stable society, fell in the wake of the 1940s, forcing tight economic controls and further weakening the government after several global economic crises (Rashburge, 2013). This was the downfall of social democracy, resulting in the uprise of the National Party. One of the most prominent eВ¬xamples of social democracy was the New Zealand Milk in Schools Schemes, which was inaugurated by the Labour Government in 1936. The purpose was to provide school children with free milk to improve the health of young New Zealanders and make use of the surplus milk (Ministry for Culture and Heritage, 2017). Up until 1967, thousands of children gulped down their daily ration of milk. Ministry for Culture and Heritage (2017) added that this scheme arose not from financial inability, but rather from the lack of knowledge of the necessary dietary needs ... Baker s last will and testament and an unknown white solid from the crime scene using both paper chromatography and physical property tests. We accomplished this purpose by conducting a series of tests on both the crime scene samples and a collection of substances known to be possible matches. To determine the nature of the ink sample, we used paper chromatography to separate and examine the various pigmented chemicals in each possible type of marker. After careful cross examination, we determined that ink sample B (the ink found at the crime scene) matched the ink sample of the Vis Г vis marker. In the begging there is an abstract, that states the aim of the research and the reached findings. There are 7 sections in the article. The first one is introduction, where the authors explain what results are reached and carefully introduce the readers to the structure of the article. In the next section the hypotheses is derived. After that, section 3, the variables and the data is described. The tests begin from section 4 to section 6. In those sections the authors use non parametric tests, regression analyses and vector autoregressive specifications in order to reach their results. The last section is the conclusion of the article, where the major findings are listed. The authors find that institutions prefer firms that pay dividends to ones which don t. Moreover, within dividendpaying firms, institutions are not attracted to high dividends. They also find a positive relation between repurchases and institutional holdings. Their results also suggest that institutions prefer firms that repurchase regularly to firms that repurchase sporadically. They don t find evidence that an increase in institutional holdings in firms is followed by an increase in dividends or repurchases. Their article has been cited 412 times by other authors. • 13. Another Turn of the Crank by Wendell Berry Essay Another Turn of the Crank by Wendell Berry Wendell Berry s Another Turn of the Crank is about sustainability of the environment. He believes that you must first start at a local level then sustainability can be accomplished at a global level. This is the same idea that was expressed at the start of this course, think globally, act locally, which means the consequences of our actions effect the world. As I address the some of the chapters in the book I will associate how Berry s ideas link into the material discussed in this class. Farming and the Global Economy is the first chapter of the book. He starts with the history of farmers during WWII. The farmers were quickly becoming a minority because the nation was not supportive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Times magazine reported in 1910 there were 32 million farmers living on farms and in 1991 32 percent of farm managers and 86 percent of farmers did not live on the farm that they took care of. Now there isn t even an agricultural class. The book goes on to talk about rape and run logging in Montana. We talked about the fly by night corporations in class. Both are the same just different terminology. In Montana, the Champion International Corp. went on a tree cutting binge in Montana, which leveled forests. They then left leaving behind million of people unemployed and over 1,000 square acres stripped. This leaves people poor and the land trashed. This is only one case, but I know we talked about this in class. These corporations suck everything they can out of a community until there isn t anything left for them. They decided to leave one day and never think twice about the people. That s why Berry has come up with a list of actions a community can do to help their own community flourish. I won t list them all, but I will name a few important ones like: always put local needs first, develop small scale industries, strive to produce as much of the community s own energy as possible, see that the old and young take care of each other, and so on. These actions would help a community grow stronger in many ways. Conserving Forest Communities deals with forestry in Kentucky. Berry is from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That does not seem like much, especially considering all the damage it causes. Large areas of wildlife habitat have been destroyed so these mountaintop removal companies can gain and make a profit. These companies do not care about the people in the communities they are hurting. Companies also do not understand that animals can become exterminated from this, and they have been. According to Mountaintop Removal 101, More than five hundred mountains have been destroyed by mountaintop removal. Box cut mining, steep slope mining, cross ridge mining, area mining, mountaintop mining and area mining are all types of mountaintop removal. This removal process usually takes place in east Kentucky, southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia, and in east Tennessee (AppalachianVoices). First, the company has to clear the area of land on the mountaintop. Second, they start blasting. Usually this includes using millions of explosives and machines to blow up the mountaintop. Next on the list of steps would be the digging. The leftover waste is then dumped into rivers and contaminates the water. Coal companies are legally allowed to dump the debris because of the Clean Water Act. The next step is the processing of the coal by chemically treating it. After the miners see the coal, they start remove it using huge coal moving machines and take it to a coal processing plant. After the coal is chemically treated, the company is required to, by law, build on the flattened land. This way the land will not be wasted. Though it is said that mountaintop removal is the most effective and most cost effective way to operate, many people say it is harmful to the environment. HDFS File System Hadoop distributed file system is written in Java for Hadoop framework, it is scalable and portable FS. HDFS provide shell commands and Java application programming interface (API). In this way, the map and reduce functions can be executed on smaller subsets of larger data sets, and this provides the scalability that is needed for big data processing. [12] A Hadoop cluster has nominally a single namenode plus a cluster of datanodes, although redundancy options are available for the namenode due to its criticality. Each datanode serves up blocks of data over the network using a block protocol specific to HDFS. The file system uses TCP /IP sockets for communication. Clients use remote procedure calls (RPC) to communicate with each other. Fig 5. HDFS Architecture [19] HDFS stores large files across multiple machines. It was designed as a two lane eye bar suspension type bridge, measuring 2,235 feet in total length, including the approaches. The bridge was the first eye bar suspension bridge of its type to be constructed in the United States. [26] Figure 4.1: The Bridge before collapse. [26] During the early evening of December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed during a period of heavy traffic and 46 people were killed. Another nine people were injured. Of the 37 vehicles on the bridge, 31 fell during the collapse. After some forty years of service, the Point Pleasant Bridge collapsed without warning. [27] Figure 4.2: The Bridge after collapse. [26] The bridge was constructed of carbon steel, which tends to crack. Many cracks were found throughout the bridge among extensive corrosion. Upon investigation, it was found that the collapse was due to a defective eye bar that experienced a cleavage fracture in the lower part of its head which was resulted from stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue. [26] Since the eye bars were not designed to be redundant, failure in one eye bar would disrupt the continuity of the suspension system. This disruption is what caused the bridge to collapse suddenly. The location of the flaw ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. The Argument Of Concept Over Skill In Contemporary Art for my dissertation, I intend to explore the argument of concept over skill in contemporary applied arts. It is a debate that has cropped up many times in my experiences with creating contemporary art pieces and in my jewellery practice and is an area with very little defined lines. In my essay I will investigate contemporary artists works and how much concept or skill has impacted on their creation of successful artworks, exploring the idea that the works could survive with either concept or skill alone. My specific focus is the cotemporary jewellers. The word skill is very closely associated with the idea of a physical object, a very tangible thing that we can easily understand, that to create such a thing. requires skill, which in turn has required a degree of qualification or knowledge, patience or time. Concept on the other hand is not equated with an object, more a deep thought out, intellectually conceived idea that only the creator could ever truly understand and a stabile medium needs to be poured inorder to convey these concepts. You could argue that yes an artist will always find an item or a variety of pre made objects in order to convey their concepts but it is a skill to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A surrogate mother is defined as a woman who carries a fetus conceived through an assisted reproduction procedure which is derived from the genes of a donor or donors, and with the intent of surrendering such child at the time of birth (AHRA, 2004). However, there is still ambiguity felt between surrogates and parents related to what the law sets out as their legal duties in conceiving a child, and this is also pertinent in relation to the context of a working contract. Having said that, this essay aims at addressing the unclarity, pointing to the main arguments in favor of the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, and how the decision was aimed to safeguard the rights of those involved; including the child, and to prevent culpability issues within the health sector and many others linked to the overall process. These students are at heightened risk for sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, and unwanted pregnancies. Research in this area has relied on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to identify beliefs and attitudes that might predict sexual risk taking. However, the TPB model does not take into consideration other factors that might influence sexual behaviors such as past sexual history, moral beliefs, self esteem, family expectation, and peer influence. College is a time for experimentation and discovering the world around you. More importantly, it is when one discovers him or herself. Being away from home is a new found freedom that most freshmen have not experienced before. On college campuses and more specifically historically black institutions students are becoming a victim of their own freedoms. This economic class of Americans are what hold the country stable through their hard work and purchasing power. However, lately there has been a few jabs thrown at the middle class, such as the 2007 2008 recession, problems with minimum wage and its efficacy to create a comfortable life, and political matchups between candidates that reflect the middle class in different ways. I believe that the middle class has had to make decisions that will benefit them financially but hurt their desires such as, having a fewer amount of kids. To begin, money is what keeps the United Statesmoving day in and day out. People wake up to get money, sleep shorter hours to make more money, and place a gate around their wants to be able to keep in as much money as possible. Flaws Of The Education System Flaws in our Education Brent Staples wrote Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A s to show the flaws in the education system with teachers giving unfair grades to students. Similarly, William Zinsser wrote College Pressures to show how colleges are putting unnecessary stress on their students. While it is important to draw attention to these problems, it is also necessary to find solutions as well. Bringing the issues to the public knowledge is only the first step in correcting our flawed educationsystem. There are certain classes that are more common than others, specifically regarding the general education classes such as English and math courses. However colleges also offer less common classes that certain students may have an interest in. The problem with these smaller classes is that with the poor attendance records, the classes could be cancelled as the college sees it as a waste of money; this is one of many reasons why professors give out unearned A s (Staples 329). To fix this problem, colleges should look not at the attendance sheet, but instead the overall GPA s of the students in the class. This not only will show if the students who are going to the class are learning and comprehending the material, but also can compare to the more popular classes with higher attendance that may not have as good of grades. Another solution would be giving the class time to grow popular. If a professor is teaching a new class for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He developed social action theory, the purpose of which was to find out why individuals function in certain ways. He thought that every social action performed by an individual had a meaning attached to it. Social actions are the result of conscious thought processes that take into consideration the reactions of other individuals. Weber identified four types of social action which include, reason (an instrumentally rational or calculated action), value or rational action (determined by belief), emotion or effectual action (dependent upon the feelings of the individual), and traditional... These properties could be exchanged for money in the economic market he was of the opinion that this position in the economic market place determined class position so that in theory there would be as many class positions as economic positions. Therefore the class structure of society is essentially an occupation structure. Social action theory recognises other divisions apart from simply class and also recognises that consumption of goods (by which status groups are stratified) is just as important as the production (by which class is stratified). It also draws attention to the importance of the individual and their conscious actions. It does not however place enough emphasis on class divisions, as it tends to concentrate more on status. Symbolic interactionists reject structure and believe that to study society, the only way to do so is to concentrate on the individual. Both theories believe in understanding the individual through the use of empathy. George Herbert Mead was mainly concerned with the importance of language. Analysis Of The Tumultuous Election Of 1800 Essay Jack Norman Mr. Nicholls Period 7 November 4, 2016 Adams vs. Jefferson The Tumultuous Election of 1800 Analytical Book Review Adams vs Jefferson, The Tumultuous Election of 1800, describes the events of the infamous United States Presidential Election of 1800, the election that forever changed the landscape of American politics and reestablished the principles of the American Revolution. The election of 1800 was a battle of two political powerhouses: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. They were two of America s founding fathers who were once great friends, but were thrown against each other as adversaries with the future of America in their hands. John Ferling, the author, began by describing the events that occurred just prior to the election, and painted the picture of John Adams travelling to Washington D.C. from his Massachusetts farm and Thomas Jefferson from his hilltop lair of Monticello in Virginia symbolizing the differences among Adam s northeastern simple farming roots and Jefferson s extravagant southern slave owning background. From the start, the author explains (without tipping his hat to the debacle the system would cause in the 1800 election) how in the 1796 and 1800 elections, the Constitution required the practice of each political party nominating two presidential candidates, with the candidates with the most votes becoming President and the second most becoming Vice President. • 48. The World of Musical Theatre Music can be traced back to the beginning of humanity. It has been an essential and crucial part of human society and its development. In the sense of Musical Theatre, it is referred to the art of telling stories through or with songs. This art can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Greeks (5th century BC), where music was used to accompany their stage works. It has been said that Sophocles composed his own music to accompany his own stage plays. In Greek theatre, a Greek Chorus was used in the play to comment on the actions. They were a part of the plot of the show, but no musical solos were present. The chorus was used also to be the conscious of the audience or as a sounding board for the main characters. Using the traditions of Greek Theatre, the Romans later replicated and expanded on the idea. The expansion evolved into the use of orchestral accompaniment for songs and dances in 3rd Century BC Plautus comedies. This later progressed in the Middle Ages with traveling minstrels and traveling performers performing popular songs and slapstick comedy. Religious Drama s became popular in the 12th and 13th centuries, combining church chants as a liturgical teaching tools such as The Play of Herod and The Play of Daniel.
