Taking a Closer Look at The Cambodian Genocide Essay
To spare you is no profit, to destroy you is no loss. Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge, once
said this truly horrifying statement (Cambodian Genocide 1). It is no wonder that he went on to
orchestrate the killings of more than two million innocent Cambodians. At the time of the mass
killings in Cambodia, the Vietnam War was raging on. It is possible that the Vietnam War masked
the true horrors of what was happening in Cambodia. The terrible events left emotional scars and
traumatized countless people. In the 1960 s a group named the Khmer Rougesurfaced, but was with
few members. They were led by Pol Pot, a man who would soon bring terror to all Cambodians.
Their goal was to bring Cambodia into a primal state, where everyone... Show more content on

In total, over two million people died and many suffered from psychological illnesses (Walker 1).
The events that happened in Cambodia showed every sign of being genocide. Mass killings took
place, emotional scars were left, and cruel treatment was inflicted.
This issue is genocide because of the mass killings that occurred. The Khmer Rouge was brutal
and killed anybody that they thought couldn t work or was in opposition to their ideals. Cambodia
lost 25% of its population, with over two millions killed. When more than two million innocent
people are killed, it is hard, if not impossible to call what happened in Cambodia, not Genocide.
Many people witnessed the deaths of their family and friends, leaving them with nightmares and
emotional scars (Carney 1).
Another strong argument that helps prove what happened in Cambodia was genocide was the
terrible treatment that the people were forced to endure every day. The Khmer Rouge was
relentless with what they did. They weren t afraid to kill someone, nor did they think twice about
it. Just the ruthlessness alone, can prove that this was genocide. The Khmer Rouge was brutal and
unforgiving; forcing people to work in terrible conditions and perform treacherous labor. The
Khmer Rouge would kill anyone who opposed this work. Due to the horrible conditions the people
worked in and the ruthless killings, the fields in which the people worked were called the

Steveland Hardaway Judkins was born prematurely on May 13, 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan.
Exposure to excessive amounts of oxygen in his incubator caused him to become blind.
Nevertheless, he developed a strong passion for music from an early age. He learned to play
various instruments such as the congas, piano, and harmonica. He was proclaimed as a child
prodigy, and by the age of eleven, which was in the year of 1962, Berry Gordon signed him to
the Motown Label. He then became Little Stevie Wonder. Fingertips (Pt. 2) , a live recording
from a Motown Revue performance became Little Stevie Wonder s first major hit in 1963. This
song featured Stevie Wonder on vocals, congas, and harmonica. Not only was this piece his first
major hit, it was a number one hit on the United States pop charts. This event brought him into
public awareness. He then dropped the Little from Little Stevie Wonder and became Stevie
Wonder. Throughout the 1960 s, particularly the mid 1960 s, Stevie Wonder continued to have a

The First Table In Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried
Instead of explaining my tables in numerical order according to table number, I m going to go
off the order I came up with them. The first table that I pieced together was the band of outsiders.
All of the people who sit at this table don t quite fit in; each one of them possesses a quality that
makes them definitively stand out. The table I m talking about is table number one. The first
person that I chose to be part of this table was The Invisible Man from the eponymously titled
book by Ralph Ellison. From the famous first line of the novel, I am an invisible man, it s clear to
the reader that T.I.M. doesn t fit in (3). Throughout the story, T.I.M. frantically goes from situation
to situation trying to figure out where and how he fits in.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness, Kurtz is through and through crazy, but he s the man that
none of his peers presume would be broken by the jungle. Kurtz throws caution to the wind and
pretty much defects and does what he pleases. I think that Rinehart would respect a man like
Kurtz because Rinehart does it all and doesn t let anyone, let alone society, dictate his action.
T.I.M. categorizes Rinehart as a fraud, because of his capacity to play so many roles (384).
Maybe Rine could give Kurtz a few tips about successfully maintaining a few different realities
and personas. I decided to add Rat Kiley to this table because he could put up with all the crazy
tales that the other men at his table have to tell. He also has a breakdown, like Kurtz s but not
quite as drastic, after the nightlife gets to him. His hallucinations of bugs all over saying These

Search For Identity In Surfacing, By Margaret Atwood
In this situation the question of an authentic Canadian voice has troubled many Canadian writers.
At the same time the regional consciousness in Canada began to give rise to a national
consciousness which further broadened into an international or universal consciousness. This
awakened conscience led to the writers showing a preoccupation with quest themes, search for
identityand selfdefinition which turned out to be search for inner space. This phenomenon appears
in the fiction of Margaret Atwood.
Conversely, in the canon of postcolonial writers, Atwood is a troublesome figure. Despite her

The major theme of the novel Search for identity , like national identity, identity of selfhood and
identity of womanhood, for the protagonist has become difficult because of her role as a victim
of colonial forces. She has been colonized by men in the patriarchal society in which she grew
up. Initially, the narrator of the story returns to the undeveloped island that she grew up on to
search for her missing father in that process she unmasks the inconsistencies in both her personal
life and her patriarchal society. The unnamed narrator of Surfacing comes back to her home in
Northern Quebec after a gap of nine years in search of her father, who is reported missing
mysteriously. The protagonist is working as a commercial artist. The reason for the deliberate
separation from her parents is that the narrator was in love with her teacher, who exploited her
innocence. Against her wishes, he got the pregnancy terminated. Unable to cope with this painful
reality she gave her parents a different version. She wrote a postcard and informed them that she

Probabilistic Categorization Learning
The Effects of Video Games on Probabilistic Categorization Learning: To reinforce the findings of
Emma Stanmore, Sabrina Schenk decides to conduct her own form of research on the effects of
video games on cognition. According to Schenk, studies show that playing video games is
connected to definite cognitive benefits such as probabilistic classification. Probabilistic
classification primarily requires a coordinated interaction between two types of long term memory:
declarative and nondeclarative memory; otherwise referred to as explicit and implicit memory
(Schenk 2017). Declarative memory is commonly known to be the storage of factual information,
while nondeclarative memory refers to the unconscious memory of certain skills. Additionally,
declarative memory is primarily controlled by the hippocampus while nondeclarative memory is
mediated by the basal ganglia (Schenk 2017) The coordinated utilization of both memory
components allows for better prediction of unknown outcomes. The unanswered question remains:

Infection Control In Health Care Essay
Infection control within a healthcare facility is the prevention of the spread of many
microorganisms from patient to patient, patient to a member of staff and also from the staff
member to the patient that are in there care. The World Health Organisation have defined
healthcare associated infections as an infection occurring in a patient in a hospitalor other healthcare
facility in whom the infection was not present or incubating at the time of admission. Every
healthcare facility from hospitals to general practitioners office should have a designated member
of staff or a team of people who ensure that the infection control procedures are abided by and
adhered to at all times in order to protect both staff and patients. More than 300,000 people each
year are affected by a healthcare associated infection and the cost of treatment for these patients is
over ВЈ3,000 and there is also the cost of treatment after discharge.

The Youngest US President ever to Take Office
John F. Kennedy was voted into office during the election of 1960. To date, Kennedy is the
youngest person to be elected President. Surprisingly, at the start of the campaign, Kennedy was a
long shot to win the Democratic nomination. Without a distinguished presence in the political world
and the stigma of being Roman Catholic, Kennedy had a lot of ground to conquer. In not just
politics, but society, religion is and was a controversial issue. Kennedy, who was Catholic, struggled
against critics who were anti Catholicism. It was often insisted that Kennedy would turn to the pope
for orders and therefore run our country based upon the Church. Kennedy overcame this obstacle by

As a nation that is expected to be the leaders of other nations, he would not settle for second. In
the case of exploring space, that was exactly where we were. The Soviet Union was far ahead of
the United States in its space program. With Project Apollo, Kennedy was determined to play
catch up and asked congress to invest more that twenty two billion dollars into the project. The
end goal was to have an American man on the moon before the end of the decade. Neil
Armstrong was that man in 1969. Not only was the Soviet Union viewed as a threat with their
space program being more advance, but they also had nuclear missile sites being built. An
American spy plane secretly photographed evidence that both Cuba and the Soviet Union were
building nuclear missile sites. President Kennedy remained collected and directed that a naval

Soviets agreed to dismantle their weapons sites in exchange for a pledge from the United States

Thomas Edison’s History with the Incandescent Light Bulb
Thomas Edison s History with the Incandescent Light Bulb Who invented the light bulb? Only a
few really know the true answer to this question. Most people around the US simply think that
Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. The story or invention myth behind the bulb varies
drastically from the general public s belief. The belief is that a lone inventor, Thomas Edison, sat
down in his workshop and simply created the incandescent light bulbout of thin air. Edison in no
way created the incandescent light bulb out of thin air. He used the knowledge of previous
researchers and inventors to make a the first commercialized light bulb and gained world wide
recognition as a result. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the first know traces of
light can be tracked to Great Britain in 1803. Humphry Davy created the first ever man made
light seen in the World. He demonstrated the ability to flow electric current through two pieces
of carbon powered by a battery source creating a bright and powerful arc. Some researchers give
Mr. Davy credit as the inventor of light (DOE). Things took a drastic change in 1835. James
Bowman Lindsay was able to keep a constant electric current flowing. He used parts of Davy s old
design and simply improved it. His ability to keep current flowing revolutionized the technology
and created the first ever incandescent light bulb (Live Science). Edison was not born until 1843,

In 2013 as Ukraine was negotiating with the European Union, President Putin was also
conducting secret meetings with the president of Ukraine. These secret meetings helped sway
the President of Ukraine to decide against joining the union and striking a deal with Russia for
oil and natural gas. This was the starting point for the Ukrainian revolution in 2014. The
Ukrainian President found refuge in Russia after he was exiled for his decision to join Russia
and not the European Union. Now with Ukraine in disarray, Putin had a new plan; he secretly
sent soldiers into Crimea. Putin saw Crimea as a vital piece of land that could help Russia by
giving them a seaport, which is more accessible to the rest of the world. This would also give
Russia the chance to strengthen their navy by giving them a more direct route to the west in
order to defend themselves from the west. Starting October 2014 reports surfaced that there
were troops in Crimea. Putin and Russia s government denied all claims that the troops were
Russian soldiers. By March 2, 2015, Russia acknowledged that they had sent troops to the border
of Ukraine to protect Russia from any actions towards Russia. By March 16, Russia announced
that troops are in Ukraine and that they held the majority of the government buildings in Crimea.
This sparked the first set of sanctions from the west. Mostly economic, Russia was able to hold

Emma Kart Willard Thesis Statement
Emma Hart Willard was an American educator whose groundbreaking feminist ideas fueled the
development of schools for women and girls. Despite living during an era where women were
regarded as intellectually inferior, Willard managed to progress quickly as an educator, eventually
opening the United States first permanent female seminary. Her tireless efforts towards
revolutionizing and expanding female educationopened doors for educated women and helped make
education more gender inclusive.
Born in Connecticut during 1787, Emma Hart Willard was the second youngest of seventeen
children. Fortunately for Willard and her siblings, her father held progressive views regarding
education and the inclusion of women in education. His encouragement resulted in her [acquiring]
an education that was out of the ordinary for girls (Chadwick, n.d., para. 3). Initially, Willard s
education was self taught and a significant part of it was her involvement in family discussions. Her
parents and siblings made sure to include her in conversations about predominantly male topics
such as politics, philosophy, world affairs and mathematics ( Emma Willard, n.d., para. 3). Those
discussions only fueled her desire to learn and at the age of fifteen, Willard enrolled in school for
the first time. (Chadwick, n.d., para 3). Once she was settled into the Berlin Academy, her local
school, she began to progress rapidly. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica (2016), she
started teaching at the Berlin Academy two years after her initial enrollment in 1802. Then, in
1806, she was granted the opportunity to be in charge of the Berlin Academy for one term. That
opportunity no doubt influenced her later actions regarding the advancement of female education.
In 1807, Willard accepted a teaching position in Massachusetts but she did not remain at the
position for long. That same year, she accepted a position as principal at a girls academy located
in Vermont (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, 2016, para. 2). Her move to Vermont proved
to be an important step in her life. In Vermont, she met her first husband, John Willard, and was

The Importance Of Light
Francis Bacon once said, In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present.
This shows that you truly cannot have or see a good thing without also knowing what bad looks
like. There are billions of people in this world, the best and brightest people are those people who
have overcome that darkness. Those people know what darkness is and have experienced it first
hand, therefore they shine so much brighter. These people who have seen darkness and who shine
so bright because of it are a guide for those who may be waiting in the darkness. Like a lighthouse
does for ships at night or like the stars and moon do for travelers. Without darkness, there would be
no need for guidance or change. There would be no point in having stars, lighthouses, or unique
bright people.
Take the life of Jesus for example, this man was born in a manger surrounded by dirty animals.
He never sinned a day in his life, yet he constantly received hate from those around them. People
hated him so much that they hung him upon a cross, which is one of the most excoriatingly
painful ways to die. He had nails driven into his hands and feet, a crown made of thorns forced
down onto his head, and he had to hang there for hours as he slowly suffocated. This man knew
darkness better than anyone, yet he is still a light or lighthouse for all people. John 1:5 states, The
light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. John 8:12 it says, When Jesus
spoke again to the

Is War Ever Justified Analysis
Is War Ever Justified Should people be persecuted for their beliefs? The Reign of Terror was a war
that had lasted for eighteen months starting with the execution of the king Louis XIV on January
21st 1793, and ending with the death of the leader of the revolution Robespierre. During those
eighteen months 20,000 to 40,00 people were killed by the guillotine, and many more were killed
by the war. The Reign of Terrorwas not justified because of the internal and external threats were
not very serious, rights were being taken away, and because there were too many deaths, During
the revolution there were some external and internal threats but they were not a major problem for
France. Prussia and Austria did invade France but throughout the war France had an advantage and

Summary Of Goodfellas And The Silence Of The Lambs
Cinematography has the potential to be so much more than just a means to tell a story. When
applied correctly, cinematography has the capability of being like a work of art hanging in a
museum. Cinematography is also able to give a depth and feeling to a film that would otherwise
not be possible. While all movies must use a camera to merely exist, few professionals have
mastered the skill and artistry that cinematographycan become. Two cinematographers that I feel
use the camera as a paint brush and their subjects has a canvas are Michael Ballhaus, known for
his work in Martin Scorsese s Goodfellas, and Tak Fujimoto, known for his work in The Silence of
the Lambs. Both cinematographers utilize the power of various levels of close ups, medium and
long shots, various camera angles, jib and tracking movements, pan and tilt, and focus just to name
a few. While both films feature killers, the overall plots are fairly different. Yet, through the
masterful use of the camera, both Ballhaus and Fujimoto are able to keep the viewer full engaged
and excited to see what is to come.
As previously mentioned, both Goodfellas and The Silence of the Lambs feature a killer and/or
killers as the main subjects. Martin Scorsese s Goodfellas is the story of Irish Italian American,
Henry Hill, and how he lives day to day life as a member of the Mafia. Based on a true story, the
plot revolves around Henry and his two unstable friends Jimmy and Tommy as they gradually climb
the ladder from petty

Dangers Of Stereotyping
Dangers Of Stereotyping Emergency!!!! Danger is near!! Dangers of stereotyping to be exact.
There are 3 topics for my reasoning as stereotyping is a dangerous social bias. The three topics
that are going to be used are things fall apart, aria memoirs of a bilingual child, and the theme for
English B. These topics will show my argument about stereotyping. The first topic that is going
to be shown is things fall apart. The main idea of this topic is that Okonkwo s village (Umofia)
had a horrible life with anything. For example: Umofia was feared by all its neighbors it was
powerful in war in magic its priels medicine were feared in all the surrounding country. (Pg 11)
This example shows that stereotyping is dangerous. Why you ask,

Incentive Plans
Organizations provide incentive plans to employees as motivation to reach the objectives and
goals of the company. Incentives are given to personnel to encourage them to do his or her best.
Incentive plans in any business might include bonuses or raises, stock option plans, or other forms
of incentives. This is in exchange for the employees who work harder, better, or faster in
accordance with the organizations goals and objectives (Businesstown.com, 2001). The majority of
incentives are performance based policies in which workers receive additional cash or benefits
centered on a worker s performance.

The CSR would receive a candy bar of his or her choice or PTO for taking the most calls in a day.
Each day the total calls are reported and the CSR with the most receives the incentive. Some
CSR s will have competitions with each other. This is a way the employees motivate themselves.
When all goals are met the team or teams receive a lunch party in which the company provides
the funds for the event; this is a paid event for all employees. Some employees make his or her
team goals a priority because the team goal incentive is always higher than individual goals.
Conclusion
Incentive plans are beneficial to an organization because it provides high productive results through
teamwork; teamwork is an effective tool in an organization. For that reason, it is important to build
an effective team and motivate them. The supervisor has the responsibility to motivate the
employees; however, when incentives are given it will motivate the employee to do his or her best
and in return the company will gain the maximum productivity of the employees
(Businesstown.com, 2001). In the department I work for monetary incentives motivate the
employees but nonmonetary incentives as simple as a candy bar or PTO work too.

such as the Civil Rights Movement, the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the entry and war of

were also many other activists that were important but lesser known. The sixties also represented
the movement of countercultures, identity politics and liberation movements. These challenges and
movements all summarized what is known as the era of the 60s.
There were many groups that opposed authority in a peaceful way such as marches and gatherings,
however, these groups certainly did not get along with authorities. The 1960 s was heavily

The Black Panthers represented the ideologies of black power and that political and economic gains
can mainly be obtained through self empowerment and growth. The group was somewhat militant
and tended to cause tensions, sometimes resulting in jail time, however, the group did a lot their
own communities, such as free breakfast for children and educational programs for all.
Similar to the ideas of Black Power, the lesbian, gay, and the second wave feminist movements
of the 1960 s were not ashamed instead they felt proud and empowered. The LGBT groups were
urged to engage with protests for radical changes while embracing and reducing criticism of who
their sexual preferences. The feminist ideologies of approaching these issues were to come out to
family members, friends, and colleagues, with no regret and living life openly as gay or lesbian.
The Gay Liberation movement had formed and radicalized in the late 60 s in response to the
Stonewall riots of the 1960s, in which a group of trans, lesbian, drag, and gay patrons resisted
arrest during a raid in New York City. After the Raid, many groups were formed such as the Gay
Liberation Front and the Gay Activist Alliance. These were just some other examples of how
identity policies were relevant in shaping the culture of the 1960s.
The feminist movement was also a common factor in shaping the 1960s and an ongoing process.

What Really Happens in the End?
So in the end you can t even really regret your misfortunes because they led you somewhere,
(Profile: Alice Walker) explains author Alice Walker. The Color Purple tells the life story of
Celie, who is from the South. She writes letters to God in which she tells about her life from
ages 14 to 44. In the letters she does not complain to God; She simply needs to talk to someone
she loves and trusts and someone who she feels loves her. Henrik Ibsen conveys an example of an
individual who is outcasted from society in An Enemy of the People. Dr. Stockmann, deemed an
enemy of the people, proved a point that in a weak position he gained an individual mind set with

remembering Alphonso s warning, Better tell nobody but God. (Walker 1) Celie felt the only
thing she can do is remain silent and let others take advantage of her. Walker did not ignore the
social forces that eventually cause men to lash out in frustration and rage. Harpo say, I love

Plagiarism And Academic Writing
Nowadays, plagiarism has become a widespread problem in academic writing. A survey conducted
by Donald McCabe, revealed that 36% of 63700 surveyed undergraduate students admitted to
paraphrasing/copying few sentences from the internet source without footnoting it (qtd in Facts and
Stats ). Two schools in North America, George Brown College and the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) are quite strict about plagiarism. Even though each school have roughly similar
definitions of plagiarism, they differ in the procedure they apply as well as the focus of their
policies.
For both schools, plagiarism is defined as the lack of respect for academic integrity. George
Brown s Student Code of Conduct and Discipline defines plagiarism as the act of quoting,
paraphrasing or expressing an idea that was articulated by someone else from a text or paper
without identification as to source (5). The MIT s document Academic Integrity defines plagiarism
as the use of someone s words, idea, data, etc, without the acknowledgement of having done so (5).
Based on their definitions, it is clear that both schools consider plagiarism as a severe academic
honesty offence that deserves to be punished.
On the other hand, George Brown applies a shorter and briefer punishment procedure than the MIT.
George Brown applies a direct punishment to the offence committed meanwhile the MIT applies a
process that is based on 3stages. The Student Code of George Brown states that the College will

A Modern Waste Water Containment Facility
As the chief operating officer of Brantford Manufacturing Co, I have enclosed an appropriate case
analysis to effectively resolve the issue with the pollutants disrupting business activity. Two distinct
solutions are provided along with a final recommendation to the board of directors in hopes of
satisfying both parties beyond expectations.
To begin, a corporation is run for the interest of shareholders alone. That is why solution Alpha
proposes that both corporations should operate for the interest of long term share performance. Past
results reveal that BMC is highly successful through its doubling of share value in the past 5 years
through its main revenue source, the Brantford operation. Thus, in order to remain at its current
state, it is crucial that the Brantford factory remains through the construction of a modern waste
water containment facility. The benefits associated with this solution are that it allows the business
to operate in the foreseeable future, potentially generated 5% dividends for shareholders as it once
did in the past. By providing consistent quality products produced by the Canadian workforce,
keeping our promise with the Ontario government. It also resolves a flooding problem within
Brantford, preventing future law suits directed towards BMC from the Brantford community.
Brand image will also be maintained if not improved as our activities will be marketed as a
corporate social initiative as it creates a positive environmental impact for the local

St. Edmond Parish Case Summary
St. Edmond s Catholic Church
A diocese is a district under the pastoral care of a bishop in the Christian Church. St. Edmond
Church is located within The Diocese of Lafayette. The Diocese of Lafayette is made up of 121
church parishes. It was established in 1918 when it was separated from the Archdiocese of New
Orleans and created as its own. St. Edmond Catholic Church has been a diocesan parish since 1974.
In 1974 Bishop Gerald L. Frey served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette. As the Lafayette
and surrounding areas grew, so did the need for a new church parish. The first priests assigned to
this newly developed parish were Father Thomas C. Dowling and Father Patrick Mallinson.
There was no formal house of worship constructed, so masses were held in the Villa Maria
Apartment Complex. Masses were offered at five different times on the weekend. As more
Catholics began attending, the need for a new place to offer the Eucharist grew larger weekly. It
was in 1974 that the Lafayette School Board allowed the two priests to use the cafeteria at the
Prairie Elementary School as a temporary church until the diocese could find or construct a building.

Permanent Magnet Brushless Direct Current Motors
Permanent magnet brushless direct current motors Nowadays, because of the fast evolution of
electronic device, The recent developments in permanent magnet materials, solid state devices and
microelectronic have led to the appearance of a new energy efficient drives using permanent
magnet brushless direct current motors (PMBLDCM). Brushless direct current (BLDC) motors are
preferred as small horsepower control motors because their efficiency is very high, the operation is
in a silent mode, has a compact form, contains high precision, low maintenance, its structure is
simple, and has a large torque, etc. Hence, it is extensively used in national defense, aerospace,
robotics, industrial process control, precision machine tools, automotive electronics, household
appliances and office automation [1]. However, the problems are found in these motor for variable
speed operation over last decades keeping technology growth in power semiconductors,
microprocessors, adjustable speed drivers control schemes and permanent magnet brushless electric
motor production have been joined to enable reliable, cost effective solution for a wide area of
adjustable speed applications. As the name reveals, Brushless motors have no brushes and
commutators. In direct current (brushed) motors, the switching of current in coils of the armature
is done using the combination of brushes and commutators but in the brushless, the commutation
process is achieved with the help of electronic circuit, which

Taking a Look at Clinical Trials
Every medical innovation starts with an idea or vision, and goes through several developmental
stages, namely, basic research, translational research and clinical research before being able to
market the treatment. (4) This treatment can be a drug, a medical device, a vaccine, a blood
product or gene therapy. (3) The basic research is done in a laboratory, where cell function is
studied, and it is determined under what conditions the treatment could cause cells to function more
effectively. The treatment is then tested in animals to see the effect, and to test possible toxicity.
Once the treatment has been named safe for use in animals, it can then be tested in humans. (4)
Clinical research, or clinical trials, involves the testing of the treatment in human volunteers,
working towards the approval of the treatment to be marketed. (3) The research that bridges the gap
between studies done in the laboratory and clinical trials is then known as translational research. (4)
The main purpose of a clinical trial is to determine if the treatment is safe and effective for human
use, and is required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before a treatment can be
approved. There are, however, other reasons these trials are performed. They can be used to
compare the new treatment to an already existing one to determine which is more effective, and to
determine different ways in which to use current treatments in order for them to be most effective,
easiest to use and provide the

With each project that is completed, the studio maintains key values that underline the process that
include hold(ing) in equal regard the process and craftsmanship while exploring the boundaries of
print through letterpress, colour and tactility . There is a large emphasis on craft and the
importance of ownership of the process. These key principles are aligned with key philosophies of
the British Arts and Crafts movement, which occurred as a result of the Industrial Revolution.
The Industrial Revolution resulted in changes to living and working conditions. Rather than the
village lifestyle that supported families working in small groups to oversee local production,
there was a shift in population from rural landscapes to vast cities. This resulted in work in
factory settings. Fredreich Engels describes how this caused the isolation of the individual in his
book The Condition of the Working Class in England . The working class were especially
sacrificed, being subject to overcrowding, and inappropriate conditions. Engels describes the
unhygienic living and working conditions including rough, dirty unpaved streets that lacked sewers
and gutters. This contributed to the spread of disease. Factories were made for the machine, and
the work was autonomous with workers being assigned one part of a production

One problem for someone trying to offer a defense of Israel despite the determined intellectual
attack on the country in recent years is that, while the assault is simply and easily understood; the
defense is harder to explain. To defame the country one simply needs to say colonization or
apartheid , and add a photo of a soldier manhandling a child, but to defend Israel requires an
expansive understanding of at least 100 years of history in both Europe and the Middle East, an
understanding of how we have reached this moment, and of what Israel s only choices are right

previously regarded as legitimate criticism of Israeli policies was in fact something different, it
was an ideology disturbing in its intention and content. She concluded that this criticism wasn t
about a two state solution at all, but it only very thinly masks a deep and visceral hatred for the
state and its people that cannot be explained by mere criticism for the policies of some of its

Things move so far and so fast in the Middle East that some of the pieces here already seem like
distant history just a year or two after happening and being written. If Iran, in 2013, felt that the

survival, it might, just as Assad did with the chemical weapons, go as far as give up the entire

the Americans are in retreat amidst the confused ruins of their policies as the Russians move in.

The Importance Of Faith And Belief
Human beings have an inherent faith and belief system regardless of whether they are aware of it.
It originates from traditions and upbringing and is the center of one s being. Faith and belief have
different content and methods of questioning and understanding the content. It is important to
understand the difference and not to interchange faithand belief because it can cause
misunderstandings and negative consequences. William K. Clifford and Paul Tillich define faith
and faith through descriptions of what they are, what they are not, and how one can reach good
faith and belief through asking the right questions based on types of doubt. As a result of faith and
belief being elements of the total person and the impact that one s person has on faith and belief, it
is essential to know the discrepancies between each.
According to Tillich, faith is a matter of ultimate concern that promises total fulfillment (Tillich, 1).
Concern is content that is infinite and valued at the core of human beings. Ultimate refers to
something that is put above all other values and involves sacrifice as it orients our lives to reach
an infinite goal of fulfillment. Faith is an act of the total personality (Tillich, 4). It comes from the
center of our being and includes all aspects of a person s life. Genuine faith requires existential
doubt which involves questioning even when a finite answer does not exist. It is a risk to put faith
in something that is not finite or capable of being

Gasoline Engines As A Diesel Engines
Introduction There are many advantages and disadvantages to gasoline engines as well as diesel
engines in both light trucks and cars. The goal of this report is to inform the public on the many
pros and cons of the vehicle buying world. This report will discuss the three main topics of
discussion when choosing between a gasoline and a diesel enginein a vehicle. The people of the
United States purchased 1,507,339 vehicles in the year 2014 alone. Now, 829,185 of those
vehicles were considered light trucks and the remaining 678,154 vehicles were cars. A large
portion of these vehicles are power by a diesel motor as compared to a gas or hybrid motors in
the other vehicles. Traditionally diesel engines are thought of as being used for large tractor
trailer trucks, heavy duty equipment, and other large commercial vehicles. However, in recent
years there has been a shift from the industrial world only to a more balanced market of diesel
vehicles for everyday use. The three main criteria on which vehicles are judged are as follows.
First, in today s day and age what is looked at is the efficiency, Fuel Efficiency. Secondly, is the
durability and dependability of the vehicle, will this car or truck last, can this vehicle drive across
country and not worry about it dying? Lastly, the report will talk about the affordability of the
vehicle, is it better to pay less initially, will paying more initially be a better investment for the long
run?

The Success Rate Of Your Business
In a world full of business there are many opportunities, some that could bring you lots of success.
The success rate of your business depends on the profits or losses of your business. Every business
wants to satisfy their customers and gain profit but sometimes that s not always what the turnout is.
The satisfaction of your customers is dependent on the products or services they have obtained.
However there are nonprofit organizations that are not seeking profit, an example would be an

Businesses are based on the people and the activities going on inside the business. Inside any
successful business there are owners, employees and customers. Then there are the activities that
occur inside which would be management, marketing and finance. Think of a business as a bunch
of classes where there are different groups and roles for each. The employees and management
are actually in the same class because the management is coordinating with the employees to
achieve the satisfaction of the customers. For example the managers of a salon would be there
coordinating with their stylists to make sure that they are performing the services on their
clients with good quality and that they are being efficiently. Then another class group would
contain marketing and consumers. They would be in the same class because the focus of all
marketing activities is to satisfy the customers. For example the marketers of a salon would be
collecting information about the services they provide. They also would figure out changes that
should be made to the salon to make sure the customers are satisfied. Another part of marketing
is advertising which for a salon could be deals on services and creating an email group to notify
the clients. Marketing can be a great thing when it comes to expanding your business. The third
and last class would be owners and finance. This is because it s the owner s responsibility to
provide financial resources for the business. For example

When people interact with one another, they will leave impacts on one another. These imprints
can take only seconds of someone s time, but those imprints can last a lifetime. The short stories
All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury, Through the Tunnel by Doris Lessing, and The Veldt by
Ray Bradbury are fine examples of the impact of parental figures in upbringings.
The three stories setting s are similar because they set up for the plot. For instance, in All Summer
in a Day, the author describes the setting as, It had been raining for seven years; thousand upon
thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the other with rain, with the drum and
gush of water, with the sweet crystal fall of showers and the concussion of ... Show more content on

In All Summer in a Day, for example, {The Children} surged about her, caught her up and bore her,
protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they
slammed and locked the door. They stood looking at the door and saw it tremble from her beating
and throwing herself against it. They heard her muffled cries. Then, smiling, they turned and went
out and back down the tunnel, just as the teacher arrived. The children react in a bullying fashion to
Margot because they had not been taught better. Another reference in Through the Tunnel of
parenting indecision is She was thinking, Of course he s old enough to be safe without me. Have I
been keeping him too close? He mustn t feel he ought to be with me. I must be careful. He was an
only child, eleven years old. She was a widow. She was determined to be neither possessive nor
lacking in devotion. She went worrying off to her beach. Jerry strikes out on his own because of
his mother s free range parenting. In the third story, He heard Peter s voice outside, against the
door. Don t let them switch off the nursery and the house, he was saying. Mr. and Mrs. George
Hadley beat at the door. Now, don t be ridiculous, children. It s time to go. Mr. McClean ll be here

Human Cloning is an Ethical Nightmare Essay examples
Technology today is growing at an alarming rate. Things that seemed impossible only a few
years ago are now a reality, and some far fetched things such as time travel, that are present in
today s science fiction movies, might possibly become reality soon as well. One prevalent idea
that seemed impossible a few years ago but that is now a reality is the idea of humancloning. The
fantasy that some people had about having clones of themselves or of animals a few years ago is
not a fantasy anymore; it is a reality. With the recent cloning of a sheep named Dolly by scientists
in Scotland, the powers of cloning are becoming more prevalent. As daunting as this may seem, the
human race must now face all the issues related to human cloning,... Show more content on

Gene and cellular cloning are realities in today s world, but the concept of whole organism
cloning has not yet been implemented. Shannon goes on to say, Gene and cell cloning are well
established, standard biotechnical research methods and must be distinguished and discussed
separately from organism cloning (10). Cloning is not that complicated of an issue as the media
has made it out to be. It is, in reality, a simple process that can be understood once its intricacies
are sorted out.
Although the majority of arguments for human cloning come from the medical world, many
secular ones arise in the debate as well. Nancy Murphy of the Fuller Theological Seminary in
Pasadena said she hoped that ethicists, `Would concentrate their efforts on saying what we should
do with this [cloning], rather then saying it shouldn t be done, because people have rightly said it
can t be prevented. (Garvey 6). Along the lines of Murphy s thought on the issue, Shapiro provides
his insights:
Time is an ally, allowing for the accrual of further data from animal experiments, an assessment of
the prospective safety and efficiency of the procedure in humans, and a period of fuller national
debate on ethical and social concerns. If cloning is to be implemented sometime in the near future,
all these issues must be

Agile Comparison
Comparisons...
Comparisons have become an inevitable and integrated with life and work. Even though myself
most of us don t like comparisons since every individual is unique and should never be compared
for what they are with others and comparison always make sense when it s made self, within,
which can only be the real truth. Even in Agile, it s advised not to compare two teams with their
velocity, since every team features and work are different. Saying that, certain situations, act and
benchmark force us to do so to really set the benchmark for others.
These incidents happened yesterday and both of them were related to Elevators and I could not
stop comparing the acts in my mind. That s when comparison probably creeps up isn t it,

Null Hypothesis: The amylase will have no effect on the starch or fail to digest it and the Lugol s
will cross the membrane causing a color change.
Hypothesis: The amylase will digest the starch, so when the Lugol s crosses the membrane, there
will be no color change. In this lab experiment, we were testing diffusion across a plasma
membrane using starch, amylase and Lugol s. The results from the experiment supported my
hypothesis. The amylase did in fact digest the starch. The control in our experiment without the
amylase confirmed this. In the original beaker, filled with 2/3 water and 4 pipettes of Lugol s,
was a tied off plastic tubing (dialysis tubing) filled with starch and amylase. In the control beaker,

Essay about Theodore Roosevelt s Square Deal
Theodore Roosevelt s Square Deal Theodore Roosevelt may be one of the most powerful
presidents that attacked Trusts1 and corporations to make them just so that everyone could
prosper. Thayer, a friend of Roosevelt wrote, . . .he took the deepest personal satisfaction in
fighting the rich and the soulless corporations. . . (Thayer). This led into the 1920 s a prosperous
decade in which people received new money. Theodore Rooseveltstressed more for people to be
responsible than to be autonomous, or, in other words, to help others besides helping yourself. He
was able to bring two separate groups together to make a better America. He brought the Trusts that

Bigness not badness was the sin (Miller). The biggest step that Roosevelt did using the Sherman
Act was stopping the Northern Securities Company from having a monopoly on the railroad
industry in the North. The Great Northern railroad company wanted to merge with the Northern
Pacific railroad company. Even though this was a part of the railroad industry Roosevelt did not
like where the merge might lead in the future, because he wanted to insure that other corporations
could compete. He also broke up the Standard Oil Trust and the Tobacco Trust. He felt that they
were getting too large and smaller companies had no where to go. In seven and a half years
Theodore Roosevelt had 44 prosecutions using the Sherman Act (Howland). After using the
Sherman Act, Roosevelt started using new legislature to conquer the Trusts and make labor
conditions more tolerable. The first department that he made to conquer Trusts was the Federal
Department of Commerce and Labor. The Commerce Department could not break down the Trusts,
but they could make working conditions better for all workers, and also set rates so the
corporations could not over charge. The Commerce department set a maximum rate for the railroad
companies in which they could charge companies. This way, the companies tnies could not survive
and compete. Also, the

Why Lying Is A Common Behavior
Reasons for lying Lying is a common behavior in today s society. But ever since we were young
we were shunned away from telling lies and were taught that we should be truthful. Why is it that
lying was immoral, but then as we grow up we drift away from that lesson? Many can say that we
are cowards who hide behind our lies. Today there exists a white liewhich states that you are
telling a lie to help someone. Why do we teach our kids that lying is bad when adults lie all the
time? In the quote Nancy Farmer compares the liars to rats who are cowards that hides and runs
around in dark places because looking at the word lying it can give off a vibe of a dark and
lonely place. Just like rats who runs and hides in dark places, liars are basically hiding behind
the shadows and living alone in their lie. From the quote I agree and disagree with the quote,
where I agreed with the quote that liars are basically rats who hides and run from the truth, they
don t care if it s unpleasant to others and see lying as an escape route from trouble. Where I
disagree is they can t be called cowards because they might be telling a white lie and instead of
being unpleasant, it can actually help the person that is receiving the lie.
Getting told a lie is a very unpleasant feeling for some while for others. They have a stronger
mentality and can withstand being told a lie. Personally in my opinion, being told a lie makes one
feel as if they can t trust the person anymore due to the fact that they

A Brief Note On The Local Small Businesses
Have you ever considered counting how many local small businesses are there in your
community? Do you think that business would do way better if it could reach out further through a
website? Fact is there are 27 million small businesses on this earth, which means there are several
products and services offered, what if these small businesshad the potential to upscale but the local
market wasn t great enough? Some of the best ran small businesses have websites that has given the
businessa great deal of benefits. Some of the benefits that help small businesses are that they help
gain credibility, save money, accessibility, wider range for target market, customer
service and,
convenience. I would like to start with one of the most influential effects a website has on a
business which is convenience. Convenience is a very influential factor, usually if a customer
can easily find your site you would see an increase in traffic on your site. Also, If your website is
more convenient than your competitors that will give you a huge advantage over them, while
spreading the name of your brand across the country rapidly. Another beneficial aspect of having
a website is it helps your business save more money. A website can help a business with money
from different angles. People automatically think that having a website could be costly, well not
necessarily it depends on how you utilize the tools given. Websites will be there all the time and is

The Effect Of Larger Brain Size Predicts Greater Intelligence
Introduction Many studies show that larger brain size predicts greater intelligence. The studies
show that on average men have approximately 4IQ points higher than women due to larger head
circumference (HC). The greater IQ is generally formed after the age of 16 since women s brains
stop forming at this age but men s continue to develop and grow. The longer growth period leads to
more head circumference and brain mass which has been found be significantly correlated with
higher intelligence. Even in the elderly, head circumference has been found to be positively and
significantly correlated with intelligence (Schofield, Logroscino, Andrews, Albert, Stern, 1997;
Tisserand, Bosma, Van Boxtel, Jolles, 2001). The larger HC is also believed to house more
neurons which help in the speed of the information processing due to more synaptic connections
(Pakkenberg Gundersen, 1997). In general, general intelligence (G) is the best predictor of
intelligence. In a Wall Street Journal article in 1994, 52 leading psychologists defined intelligence
as a very general mental capacity which, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan,
solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from
experience (Gottfredson, 1997, p. 13); others have defined intelligence as the sum total of all
cognitive abilities (Stankov Roberts, 1997, p. 76). In all cases, males have tested higher on g than
females leading researchers to believe

Persuasive Freedom Of Speech
Content generated by the media is vastly changing with time. Alongside, how the audience wishes
to view content is changing as well. In the earlier times, only televisions and radios were used to
transfer information. Nowadays, new platforms and websites are using different techniques to
deliver content to their respective audience. On Netflix Nobody Speak, by Brian Knappenberger is
one of the many information and knowledge packed documentary, that redefines the way viewers
learn about the different meanings of certain phrases. One of the ways is freedom of speech, which
enables individuals to express ideas and thoughts candidly. Different audience group will
acknowledge different purposes to freedom of speech. Even though civilians hold the right to
freedom of speech, it can also come with deadly consequences. The expression in the documentary
holds a cruel and degrading meaning, even so, other reasons such as the rights of privacymight
outweigh the separate statement. The case between Terry Bolea and Gawker refines how different
audience ponders about the meaning freedom of speech. Expressing how freedom of speech and
technology was misused to degrade one of the most renowned celebrities named Hulk Hogan,
known initially as Terry Bolea.
Firstly, no kind of authority should obtain the power to interrogate or expose another person s
private life to the media. The quote, Freedom of information clashes with people s right to
privacy on a political government level, which is usually constrained, (Mass Communication in
Canada, p.38), states that freedom of speech is limited and should not break certain rules.
Considering celebrities are role models, that does not make them perfect human beings.
Gawker.com a self opinionated website, developed to publicize atrocious or embarrassing
footage about contrastive celebrities; uses freedom of speech as ammo to release footage that
could potentially ruin a person s standard and career. From the film, witnessing that Hulk Hogan s
private life was in jeopardy by the power of freedom of speech that Gawker.com perceives to hold.
Fundamentally, freedom of speech considering a characteristic of the public sphere, but it is limited
to certain morals and guideline.

Leading Through Change
In 2017 the team of individuals I manage changed 4 times. It felt as soon as I would develop a
bond with an employee a change would occur. As a leader, we struggle with developing ways to
lead through change. I recognized early on that there is a difference between managing and leading.
Prior to all the changes I could use management skills to make sure my team members were meeting
expectations. When changes begin to occur, I had to put on my leadership skills hat to help my team
cope with all the changes that were occurring. With each change that occurred I focused on the

Leaders are more adapt to change and must remember not to become desensitized to team
members that are not as adapt to change. This is considered narrow minded thinking and should
be avoided. When we have concerns about change we should always remember not to be afraid of
change, stay calm, and articulate your concerns. John Henry Newman once said, To be human is to
change. To be perfect is to have changed often .
Change Model and Self Assessment
In the technology industry change is inevitable. If change is planned and with the right tools
individuals will accept change in a positive light. One recommended tool to use to understand
change and the stages associated with change is the Kubler Ross Change Model. Kubler Ross was a
psychiatrist that identified the five stages that most terminally ill pa0 tients experience they are:
denial, frustration, depression, experiment, and decision. We often use this tool to identify which
stage our teams are in and to develop an action plan for moving them through the various stages.
With the denial stage, we recognize that most individuals are in disbelief of the change. During this
stage leaders, must move quickly to create alignment. This will provide structure during a chaotic
period. Once things become stable, individuals can begin to feel frustration once they realize that
things are different. Leaders must maximize communication to

Isolation In Isolaanski s Movies
Isolation seems to be a key and recurrent theme within Polanski s films. It is a theme that is
apparent in both Rosemary s Baby and The tenant , as well as being evident in many of his other
films such as Repulsion and The Pianist. As such Polanski has been defined by the way he
explores isolation within in his films, described as a director, writer and actor who deftly explores
themes of isolation, desire and absurdity 1. According to J.P Tellotte Polanski choses to confront
the problems associated with isolation, violence, and evil because of his status as a man effectively
without a country. 2 As such Polanski s work might be seen as an attempt to map out the precise
relationship between the contemporary world s instability and... Show more content on

If we explore how Polanski demonstrates the action of isolating in Rosemary s Baby for
example, Rosemary is forced to stand alone as her husband s relationship with the Casavets
grows more intimate. For Trelkovsky, this solitude is self inflicted, after an uncomfortable
confrontation with a neighbor after a loud eveing with friends, Trelkovsky s friends never return
to the apartment. In regard to being isolated from a known world the viewer can see that
Rosemary is isolated from the world she knows, from her friends and from her previous life. The
same can be said for Trelkovsky in The Tenant, as being an immigrant to France he is quite
literally isolated from the world he understands. Finally if we can see how the definition of
isolation as a defense mechanism is projected onto Rosemary as her paranoia is dismissed as
being merely hormonal. This isolation is enforced by the apartment buildings other tenants, who
seek to use isolation as a way of controlling Rosemary. In The Tenant, Trelkovsky enforced solitude
and isolation stems from within his own psyche and his inherent need to please. Possibly caused by
his status as an other, and an immigrant. Being isolated from his original home, he seeks to conform
to what he thinks is expected of him, resulting in his

Symbolism In Battle Royal
The short story, Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison, a blindfold is used as one of the major symbols
of the story. The blindfold symbolizes the narrator s inability to see the battle he is truly up
against. The African American narrator of the short story is invited to give a speech at a
gathering of some of the towns white citizens after successfully delivering the same speech at his
graduation. When the narrator arrives he is subjected to doing horrifying things. One of which is
having to blindly and brutally fight some of his black schoolmates all of whom are also
blindfolded. While the narrator is in the ring taking hard hits, his thoughts return speech. He is so
focused on delivering a speech of quality that will win over the white audience. The narrator states,
The harder we fought the more threatening the men became. And yet, I had begun to worry about
my speech again. How would it go? Would they recognize my ability? What would they give me

Cultural Changes In Canada
Canada s roll in accepting immigrants and refugees ultimately changed the make up of Canadian
society. Canada, slowly becoming a cultural mosaic, changed immigration policies to improve the
life for both immigrants and refugees. This nation, was immensely important in the aspect of
immigration through the 1970s to the 1990s. Canadas acceptance of immigrants and refugees not
only boosted the economy but showed that Canada was a kind, caring, and compassionate country,
and with that came cultural diversity.
Immigration in the late 20th century improved the Canadian economy. As Canada accepts more and
more immigrants the population gradually rises, creating more jobs and increasing the need for

Old Sacramento History
There is an eight block section in downtown Sacramento that is often referred to as charming,
quaint and history rich. These are all accurate descriptors of Old Sacramento, but after a recent

morning in Old Sac . We arrived before noon, but the temperatures were already climbing, so after
strolling up and down the planked sidewalks, peering in window fronts and admiring the old
fashioned barrels being used as trash cans (it s life s little things sometimes), we headed indoors.

labor used to build it as well as why building the railroad was important in developing California
as a state. There are twenty restored railroad cars and locomotives for you to admire, many of
which you can climb aboard. In the dining car, you ll discover how luxurious travel used to be.
The place settings of fine china and elaborate menus are a far cry from today s typical travel fare

  • 2. Taking a Closer Look at The Cambodian Genocide Essay To spare you is no profit, to destroy you is no loss. Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge, once said this truly horrifying statement (Cambodian Genocide 1). It is no wonder that he went on to orchestrate the killings of more than two million innocent Cambodians. At the time of the mass killings in Cambodia, the Vietnam War was raging on. It is possible that the Vietnam War masked the true horrors of what was happening in Cambodia. The terrible events left emotional scars and traumatized countless people. In the 1960 s a group named the Khmer Rougesurfaced, but was with few members. They were led by Pol Pot, a man who would soon bring terror to all Cambodians. Their goal was to bring Cambodia into a primal state, where everyone... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In total, over two million people died and many suffered from psychological illnesses (Walker 1). The events that happened in Cambodia showed every sign of being genocide. Mass killings took place, emotional scars were left, and cruel treatment was inflicted. This issue is genocide because of the mass killings that occurred. The Khmer Rouge was brutal and killed anybody that they thought couldn t work or was in opposition to their ideals. Cambodia lost 25% of its population, with over two millions killed. When more than two million innocent people are killed, it is hard, if not impossible to call what happened in Cambodia, not Genocide. Many people witnessed the deaths of their family and friends, leaving them with nightmares and emotional scars (Carney 1). Another strong argument that helps prove what happened in Cambodia was genocide was the terrible treatment that the people were forced to endure every day. The Khmer Rouge was relentless with what they did. They weren t afraid to kill someone, nor did they think twice about it. Just the ruthlessness alone, can prove that this was genocide. The Khmer Rouge was brutal and unforgiving; forcing people to work in terrible conditions and perform treacherous labor. The Khmer Rouge would kill anyone who opposed this work. Due to the horrible conditions the people worked in and the ruthless killings, the fields in which the people worked were called the Cambodian killing fields ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first table that I pieced together was the band of outsiders. All of the people who sit at this table don t quite fit in; each one of them possesses a quality that makes them definitively stand out. The table I m talking about is table number one. The first person that I chose to be part of this table was The Invisible Man from the eponymously titled book by Ralph Ellison. From the famous first line of the novel, I am an invisible man, it s clear to the reader that T.I.M. doesn t fit in (3). T.I.M. categorizes Rinehart as a fraud, because of his capacity to play so many roles (384). Maybe Rine could give Kurtz a few tips about successfully maintaining a few different realities and personas. I decided to add Rat Kiley to this table because he could put up with all the crazy tales that the other men at his table have to tell. He also has a breakdown, like Kurtz s but not quite as drastic, after the nightlife gets to him. Probabilistic Categorization Learning The Effects of Video Games on Probabilistic Categorization Learning: To reinforce the findings of Emma Stanmore, Sabrina Schenk decides to conduct her own form of research on the effects of video games on cognition. According to Schenk, studies show that playing video games is connected to definite cognitive benefits such as probabilistic classification. Probabilistic classification primarily requires a coordinated interaction between two types of long term memory: declarative and nondeclarative memory; otherwise referred to as explicit and implicit memory (Schenk 2017). Declarative memory is commonly known to be the storage of factual information, while nondeclarative memory refers to the unconscious memory of certain skills. Additionally, declarative memory is primarily controlled by the hippocampus while nondeclarative memory is mediated by the basal ganglia (Schenk 2017) The coordinated utilization of both memory components allows for better prediction of unknown outcomes. Not only was the Soviet Union viewed as a threat with their space program being more advance, but they also had nuclear missile sites being built. An American spy plane secretly photographed evidence that both Cuba and the Soviet Union were building nuclear missile sites. President Kennedy remained collected and directed that a naval blockade was placed around Cuba which would prevent the Soviets from obtaining more military supplies. On the brink of what could have been a nuclear war, there was an agreement made, the Soviets agreed to dismantle their weapons sites in exchange for a pledge from the United States not to invade Cuba. Tension slowly began to lessen as time passed and the agreement remained respected. Another one of Kennedy s problems he was confronted during Presidency was racial discrimination. • 14. Thomas Edison’s History with the Incandescent Light Bulb Thomas Edison s History with the Incandescent Light Bulb Who invented the light bulb? Only a few really know the true answer to this question. Most people around the US simply think that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. The story or invention myth behind the bulb varies drastically from the general public s belief. The belief is that a lone inventor, Thomas Edison, sat down in his workshop and simply created the incandescent light bulbout of thin air. Edison in no way created the incandescent light bulb out of thin air. He used the knowledge of previous researchers and inventors to make a the first commercialized light bulb and gained world wide recognition as a result. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the first know traces of light can be tracked to Great Britain in 1803. Humphry Davy created the first ever man made light seen in the World. He demonstrated the ability to flow electric current through two pieces of carbon powered by a battery source creating a bright and powerful arc. Some researchers give Mr. Davy credit as the inventor of light (DOE). Things took a drastic change in 1835. James Bowman Lindsay was able to keep a constant electric current flowing. He used parts of Davy s old design and simply improved it. His ability to keep current flowing revolutionized the technology and created the first ever incandescent light bulb (Live Science). Vladimir Putin Controversy Vladimir Putin s Presidency has been successful even though it is riddled with controversy and corruption starting from his first election, and leading to his decision to invade Ukraine and annex Crimea. When Vladimir Putin took office in 1991, it started a 16 year run of power, deceit, and corruption, which has been riddled with controversy. Nevertheless, there is no denying that Russia has thrived since the electionof Vladimir Putin, economically, politically and militarily. These secret meetings helped sway the President of Ukraine to decide against joining the union and striking a deal with Russia for oil and natural gas. This was the starting point for the Ukrainian revolution in 2014. The Ukrainian President found refuge in Russia after he was exiled for his decision to join Russia and not the European Union. Now with Ukraine in disarray, Putin had a new plan; he secretly sent soldiers into Crimea. Putin saw Crimea as a vital piece of land that could help Russia by giving them a seaport, which is more accessible to the rest of the world. This would also give Russia the chance to strengthen their navy by giving them a more direct route to the west in order to defend themselves from the west. Starting October 2014 reports surfaced that there were troops in Crimea. Putin and Russia s government denied all claims that the troops were Russian soldiers. By March 2, 2015, Russia acknowledged that they had sent troops to the border of Ukraine to protect Russia from any actions towards Russia. By March 16, Russia announced that troops are in Ukraine and that they held the majority of the government buildings in Crimea. This sparked the first set of sanctions from the west. Mostly economic, Russia was able to hold out and not be affected by these sanctions. The second set of sanctions hit their businesses and many of Putin s friends, which he appointed. This is when Putin started to negotiate with the west. Crimea then held a vote to see if they would join Russia or stay part of Ukraine. 90% voted in favor of joining Russia. • 16. Emma Kart Willard Thesis Statement Emma Hart Willard was an American educator whose groundbreaking feminist ideas fueled the development of schools for women and girls. Despite living during an era where women were regarded as intellectually inferior, Willard managed to progress quickly as an educator, eventually opening the United States first permanent female seminary. Her tireless efforts towards revolutionizing and expanding female educationopened doors for educated women and helped make education more gender inclusive. Born in Connecticut during 1787, Emma Hart Willard was the second youngest of seventeen children. Fortunately for Willard and her siblings, her father held progressive views regarding education and the inclusion of women in education. His encouragement resulted in her [acquiring] an education that was out of the ordinary for girls (Chadwick, n.d., para. 3). Initially, Willard s education was self taught and a significant part of it was her involvement in family discussions. Her parents and siblings made sure to include her in conversations about predominantly male topics such as politics, philosophy, world affairs and mathematics ( Emma Willard, n.d., para. 3). Those discussions only fueled her desire to learn and at the age of fifteen, Willard enrolled in school for the first time. (Chadwick, n.d., para 3). Once she was settled into the Berlin Academy, her local school, she began to progress rapidly. According to the EncyclopГ¦dia Britannica (2016), she started teaching at the Berlin Academy two years after her initial enrollment in 1802. Then, in 1806, she was granted the opportunity to be in charge of the Berlin Academy for one term. That opportunity no doubt influenced her later actions regarding the advancement of female education. In 1807, Willard accepted a teaching position in Massachusetts but she did not remain at the position for long. That same year, she accepted a position as principal at a girls academy located in Vermont (The Editors of EncyclopГ¦dia Britannica, 2016, para. 2). • 17. The Importance Of Light Francis Bacon once said, In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present. This shows that you truly cannot have or see a good thing without also knowing what bad looks like. There are billions of people in this world, the best and brightest people are those people who have overcome that darkness. Those people know what darkness is and have experienced it first hand, therefore they shine so much brighter. These people who have seen darkness and who shine so bright because of it are a guide for those who may be waiting in the darkness. Like a lighthouse does for ships at night or like the stars and moon do for travelers. Without darkness, there would be no need for guidance or change. There would be no point in having stars, lighthouses, or unique bright people. Take the life of Jesus for example, this man was born in a manger surrounded by dirty animals. He never sinned a day in his life, yet he constantly received hate from those around them. People hated him so much that they hung him upon a cross, which is one of the most excoriatingly painful ways to die. He had nails driven into his hands and feet, a crown made of thorns forced down onto his head, and he had to hang there for hours as he slowly suffocated. This man knew darkness better than anyone, yet he is still a light or lighthouse for all people. John 1:5 states, The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. When applied correctly, cinematography has the capability of being like a work of art hanging in a museum. Cinematography is also able to give a depth and feeling to a film that would otherwise not be possible. While all movies must use a camera to merely exist, few professionals have mastered the skill and artistry that cinematographycan become. Two cinematographers that I feel use the camera as a paint brush and their subjects has a canvas are Michael Ballhaus, known for his work in Martin Scorsese s Goodfellas, and Tak Fujimoto, known for his work in The Silence of the Lambs. Both cinematographers utilize the power of various levels of close ups, medium and long shots, various camera angles, jib and tracking movements, pan and tilt, and focus just to name a few. While both films feature killers, the overall plots are fairly different. Yet, through the masterful use of the camera, both Ballhaus and Fujimoto are able to keep the viewer full engaged and excited to see what is to come. As previously mentioned, both Goodfellas and The Silence of the Lambs feature a killer and/or killers as the main subjects. Two schools in North America, George Brown College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are quite strict about plagiarism. For both schools, plagiarism is defined as the lack of respect for academic integrity. George Brown s Student Code of Conduct and Discipline defines plagiarism as the act of quoting, paraphrasing or expressing an idea that was articulated by someone else from a text or paper without identification as to source (5). The MIT s document Academic Integrity defines plagiarism as the use of someone s words, idea, data, etc, without the acknowledgement of having done so (5). Taking a Look at Clinical Trials Every medical innovation starts with an idea or vision, and goes through several developmental stages, namely, basic research, translational research and clinical research before being able to market the treatment. (4) This treatment can be a drug, a medical device, a vaccine, a blood product or gene therapy. (3) The basic research is done in a laboratory, where cell function is studied, and it is determined under what conditions the treatment could cause cells to function more effectively. The treatment is then tested in animals to see the effect, and to test possible toxicity. Once the treatment has been named safe for use in animals, it can then be tested in humans. (4) Clinical research, or clinical trials, involves the testing of the treatment in human volunteers, working towards the approval of the treatment to be marketed. (3) The research that bridges the gap between studies done in the laboratory and clinical trials is then known as translational research. (4) The main purpose of a clinical trial is to determine if the treatment is safe and effective for human use, and is required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before a treatment can be approved. There are, however, other reasons these trials are performed. They can be used to compare the new treatment to an already existing one to determine which is more effective, and to determine different ways in which to use current treatments in order for them to be most effective, easiest to use and provide the ... One Eden Lenner Book Review Winning the War of Words One problem for someone trying to offer a defense of Israel despite the determined intellectual attack on the country in recent years is that, while the assault is simply and easily understood; the defense is harder to explain. To defame the country one simply needs to say colonization or apartheid , and add a photo of a soldier manhandling a child, but to defend Israel requires an expansive understanding of at least 100 years of history in both Europe and the Middle East, an understanding of how we have reached this moment, and of what Israel s only choices are right now. Like many Israelis, she had her mind changed by the Palestinians repeatedly rejecting Israel s peace offers and by their use of brutal terrorism. She writes that she noticed, what she had previously regarded as legitimate criticism of Israeli policies was in fact something different, it was an ideology disturbing in its intention and content. She concluded that this criticism wasn t about a two state solution at all, but it only very thinly masks a deep and visceral hatred for the state and its people that cannot be explained by mere criticism for the policies of some of its elected governments. Things move so far and so fast in the Middle East that some of the pieces here already seem like distant history just a year or two after happening and being written. If Iran, in 2013, felt that the economic pressure and the credible threat of military intervention were to threaten its very survival, it might, just as Assad did with the chemical weapons, go as far as give up the entire nuclear program altogether. Before 2014 started was a relatively peaceful time. But of course, we know now that the West will never make such a threat, that the mullahs will have their way, and that the Americans are in retreat amidst the confused ruins of their policies as the Russians move in. • 36. The Importance Of Faith And Belief Human beings have an inherent faith and belief system regardless of whether they are aware of it. It originates from traditions and upbringing and is the center of one s being. Faith and belief have different content and methods of questioning and understanding the content. It is important to understand the difference and not to interchange faithand belief because it can cause misunderstandings and negative consequences. William K. Clifford and Paul Tillich define faith and faith through descriptions of what they are, what they are not, and how one can reach good faith and belief through asking the right questions based on types of doubt. As a result of faith and belief being elements of the total person and the impact that one s person has on faith and belief, it is essential to know the discrepancies between each. According to Tillich, faith is a matter of ultimate concern that promises total fulfillment (Tillich, 1). Concern is content that is infinite and valued at the core of human beings. Ultimate refers to something that is put above all other values and involves sacrifice as it orients our lives to reach an infinite goal of fulfillment. Faith is an act of the total personality (Tillich, 4). It comes from the center of our being and includes all aspects of a person s life. Genuine faith requires existential doubt which involves questioning even when a finite answer does not exist. It is a risk to put faith in something that is not finite or capable of being ... The three main criteria on which vehicles are judged are as follows. First, in today s day and age what is looked at is the efficiency, Fuel Efficiency. Secondly, is the durability and dependability of the vehicle, will this car or truck last, can this vehicle drive across country and not worry about it dying? The employees and management are actually in the same class because the management is coordinating with the employees to achieve the satisfaction of the customers. For example the managers of a salon would be there coordinating with their stylists to make sure that they are performing the services on their clients with good quality and that they are being efficiently. Then another class group would contain marketing and consumers. They would be in the same class because the focus of all marketing activities is to satisfy the customers. For example the marketers of a salon would be collecting information about the services they provide. They also would figure out changes that should be made to the salon to make sure the customers are satisfied. Another part of marketing is advertising which for a salon could be deals on services and creating an email group to notify the clients. The fantasy that some people had about having clones of themselves or of animals a few years ago is not a fantasy anymore; it is a reality. Although the majority of arguments for human cloning come from the medical world, many secular ones arise in the debate as well. Nancy Murphy of the Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena said she hoped that ethicists, `Would concentrate their efforts on saying what we should do with this [cloning], rather then saying it shouldn t be done, because people have rightly said it can t be prevented. The studies show that on average men have approximately 4IQ points higher than women due to larger head circumference (HC). The greater IQ is generally formed after the age of 16 since women s brains stop forming at this age but men s continue to develop and grow. The longer growth period leads to more head circumference and brain mass which has been found be significantly correlated with higher intelligence. Even in the elderly, head circumference has been found to be positively and significantly correlated with intelligence (Schofield, Logroscino, Andrews, Albert, Stern, 1997; Tisserand, Bosma, Van Boxtel, Jolles, 2001). The larger HC is also believed to house more neurons which help in the speed of the information processing due to more synaptic connections (Pakkenberg Gundersen, 1997).
