Criminal Law Essay
Illinois revised statutes state that, a person is justified in the use of deadly force when that person
reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to
himself. (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1977, ch. 38, par. 7 1).
When a court looks to define whether a defendant was reasonably justified in his use of deadly force
they look at four factors: (1) Significant physical disparity in size between the defendant and the
decedent(s) (2) the defendant avidly attempts to avoid confrontation (3) The defendant feels threaten
by the decedent(s) (4) the decedent(s) continued pursuit of the defendants after a had been fired. The

In People v S.M. the defendant is seen actively trying to avoid confrontation and thus giving the court
evidence that he felt his life was truly in danger. The court stated that his fears were well founded is
borne out by the appearance and conduct of Gale s four companions and by the fact that the boys were
in way discouraged by the respondent s gun. The respondent made repeated efforts to flee. At no time
did he stand his ground or advance toward the other boys. Likewise, in People v Shipp the defendant
is seen trying to stop the decedent by using words. Please don t come any closer. The decedent
continued to advance and the defendant began backing up . It is only when he gets within proximity
does the defendant deem it necessary to act. The court found that the defendant acted in a way that
was justified in the use of deadly force to protect herself from imminent harm. In contrast in People v
Moore, the defendant did not avoid confrontation, just before the defendants use of deadly force he is
told to go back home by his neighbor. He instead makes the decision to return with the weapon and
use it if necessary. This leads the court to believe he didn t act in a way to avoid confrontation.
The third factor that the court uses to justify the reasonable use of deadly force is that the defendant
feels threaten by the decedent(s). In People

Thomas Middleton s A Chaste Maid Essay
Here Comes Our Gossips Now : Notions of Selfhood and Agency in
Thomas Middleton s A Chaste Maid in Cheapside In the third act of Thomas Middleton s A Chaste
Maid at Cheapside (1613), the audience is presented with the christening of the Allwit newborn. As
Mrs. Allwit s bed is brought onto the stage, the christening is attended by five gossips, two Puritan
women, Maudlin Yellowhammer, Mrs. Allwit s midwife, and a number of other women namely, the
majority of the play s eighteen female characters. However, the female characters are allowed to
dominate the stage only up to a point, as the christening scene is also witnessed by Allwit, whose sole
function in the scene is to comment on the events of the christening. It is through Allwit that the
audience learns that the women are overindulging in the food and wine served to them; he also alerts
us of the women s, to use Gail Kern Paster s euphemism, leaking. Most importantly, however, Allwit
becomes a mouthpiece of sorts for the social and cultural perceptions of these women.
While the christening scene has often received critical attention due to its portrayal of feminine excess
in its worst possible form, a more nuanced reading of the gossips role in this play is possible. Rather
than merely demonstrating the utter depravity of characters due to their gender and social rank, the
gossips conduct during the christening may be construed as a key point of rebellion against the
limitations of the patriarchal society

 Resource Sharing Computer resources can be shared in the network such as the printer, scanner,
modem etc. This allows us to track down the uses of resources. For example, a network administrator
can set up a printer server and share it in the network. Then the user can use printer server for printing.
Now administrator needs only to monitor the print server instead of individual workstations. This is
economically better.  Application Sharing Application sharing is the most common in companies.
Companies may have a business application that needs to be updated by several users. Sharing make it
possible. It allows several users to work together on a single application.  Economic benefits With
computer networking, you can use a lot of software and hardware available on the market which can
just be stored or installed on a server and can be used by various workstations. Dis Advantage: 
Need of Technicians The network should be checked frequently monitored for good performance and
no problems on its physical and logical component. The expert technicians are required to do so it cost
a lot of money to hire them for all time  Network failure If any server like the file, print etc. fail then
the whole network is affected. If any hardware fails the nodes cannot be used.  Expensive It is
expensive to build and run the network. Expensive hardware like a router, cables, hub,

Agriculture In America
Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals
and happiness. Thomas Jefferson. Education and agriculture have always been a major key in the lives
of many Americans. In early years many Americans lived on family farms producing food and fiber.
Planting and harvest times determined when children would attend school because older siblings
needed to be home to assist with crops. Most food came from family farms instead of a grocery store,
as they do now. Today s youth have no idea how difficult growing and harvesting crops for a family

Geology Research Paper
Abstract The following paper has four parts. In the first part, the paper describes the process of
measurement of earthquakes and the difference between intensity and magnitude. The paper also
comments on evidence of earth s age and the fact that the oldest possible rocks will never be found.
This article also focuses on the effect of new discoveries on our knowledge about the extinction of
dinosaurs. The paper also defines atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons, ions and isotopes. In the second
part, the paper explains the origins of gabbroic, andesitic and granitic magmas. It also gives a
comparison between chemical and mechanical weathering. The paper also highlights the factors
contributing to mass wastage and gives examples of sedimentary rocks that are useful. In the third
part, the paper gives the differences between eight elements. Moreover, the paper highlights the ways
in which a stream erodes a channel. The paper also gives details about drainage basin, drainage pattern
and water tables. In the last part, the paper gives the causes behind the dust bowl of 1930 s. It also
describes the process of glacier formation. Moreover, the paper contrasts the conditions of winter and
summer beaches and gives the reasons behind the changes that occur. Lastly, the paper compares the
geological conditions that are responsible for the formation of petroleum and coal. Measuring

Direct Democracy In Ancient Greek City
Direct democracy derives its power from citizens debating and voting directly on all laws and policies.
Ancient Greek City State portrayed direct democracy by allowing the legislature to be made up of all
the citizens. To add, women, foreigners, and slaves were excluded because they weren t citizens.
Furthermore, participation is key, concluding that direct democracy is carried out most easily in small
political communities. Due to spread of democratic policies, representative democracy was
established. It s defined as a form of government in which citizens elect a representative to take charge
of all laws and policies. Elections are held for government officials, universal suffrage allows all
adults to take action and vote for their representative.

Argumentative Essay On Magic Mushrooms
Psychedelic Mushrooms
Psychedelic mushrooms are rumored to have a long and holy background, which dates back to 9000
B.C in North African indigenous cultures. Rock paintings, statues and manuscripts depict what some
historians believe to be magic mushrooms. This idea is highly controversial, as other historians claim
that none of the evidence found is definitive, and that people are seeing what they want to see.
Westerners began to eat magic mushrooms during the 1950s; throughout the 1960s and 1970s,
hallucinogenic drugs became widely popular and psychedelic mushroom use became inextricably tied
to the hippie movement.
Along with the history of these mushrooms, there are other interesting facts about these hallucinogens.

That does not include over the counter drugs like Tylenol and Claritin which are used to help with
sickness. Taking illegal drugs will harm you and possibly others around you. Whether or not a drug is
legal or illegal, people will still find a way to do it. People want what they can t have. Think, if coffee
was illegal, would more people want it? (I do not know the answer to this). However, that does not
mean that we should just give in and start making drugs legal, because that is us practically putting
drugs into people s hands. Drug addicts can end up on Welfare and find themselves troubled to find a
job. Drugs cause people to make bad decisions and can get people killed. Pregnant women taking
drugs could cause their baby to have birth defects. They can damage your brain, heart, and other
important organs. People who support legalizing drugs state that the government should be more
focused on other crimes such as robbery, murder and rape. These offenses are closely tied to the drug
market, so if we could get rid of these unnecessary drugs, we could decrease crime rates. There are
better, safer alternatives to using drugs. Some may argue that people should be able to put whatever
they please into their bodies, but putting drugs into your body will ruin yours and potentially others

The Offering Lazerow Summary
One could imagine it to be difficult to see God in a dark factory, but, many of the girl s spirituality was
not suppressed by the living and working environments of the mills. Lazerow discusses how despite
the fact that some of the articles of the Offering were used as propaganda to represent the girls as
virtuous, and how the mill owners strove to structure a morally upright community of factory
operatives; these facts do not take away from many of the girl s sentiments about religion. Earlier,
when a young woman explained the plants surrounding the factory in which she worked, she
continued by stating, it is there we inhale the sweet perfume of the rose, the lily, and geranium; and,
with them, send the sweet incense of sincere gratitude

Overfishing And Its Effects On Humans
Fish, one of the worlds leading food source in all regions of the world, but what if one day that food
source was to deplete so drastically that one could no longer use it as a food source? What would
happen to the people that rely solely on this source? What would happen to the people that relied on
catching fish as a job? What would happen to the worlds economy? These are only a few questions
that should be a concern in the result of Overfishing. The ocean is a big and mass world living among
us, taking up seventy eight percent of our space on Earth. This makes the idea of overfishing sound
ridiculous and people often ignore the idea. How could we possibly deplete such a large resource?
However, overfishing is not a concept to be taken lightly. Not every fish in the ocean is editable and
not every fish is able to be reached by fisherman. However, the fish we do commonly eat and catch is
being caught at an alarming rate, faster than they are able to reproduce, but we will talk about this
more later. For one to better understand overfishing, one must be aware of the causes of Overfishing
and the effects it has on our society. In order to better understand a concept, one must really dig down
beneath the surface in order to truly understand it. We will go over the causes and effects of
overfishing and its effects on the marine life, what it does to the food supply for civilization, and the
subtle signs warning us about overfishing. Not all marine life is edible, but that

The Pros And Cons Of Protectionism
Encyclopaedia Britannica (2014) defines protectionism as the Policy of protecting domestic industries
against foreign competition by means of tariffs, subsidies, import quotas, or other restrictions or
handicaps placed on the imports of foreign competitors. Rising levels of globalization in modern times
has led to a growing interdependence of countries around the world and increase in trade links
between them (Johnson and Turner, 2010, p. 21). This in turn has created popular discourse on the
idea of a global economy arising out of free trade instead of country specific economies, and
consideration of global costs of protectionism. However, the doctrine of international free exchange
and free trade has been questioned on two aspects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Nationalism and Protectionism Ahlerup and Hansson (2011, p. 432 433) quoting Stanford
Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2008 define nationalism as an ideology adhered to by members of a
nation; an ideology which draws on their duty of being loyal to the nation; additionally the ultimate
welfare of the nation is highly emphasized. It is also the attitude of members and how they perceive
themselves as a part of a nation. Although nationalism is determined by various factors, for the
purpose of this essay, nationalism refers to civic nationalism, which is defined in political or territorial
terms, where people are united by a common purpose. Mayda and Rodrik (2005, p. 1394) state that
nearly 60% people from strong nationalist countries garner negative points of views in relation to
imported goods and are usually less pro trade. Further, Ahlerup and Hansson (2011, p. 435) postulate
quoting Smith and Kim (2006) that strong national pride also leads to antagonism against

Reduced Visual Acuity Summary
Summary
Reduced visual acuity can be addressed through a range of options, including: familiarizing the
student with their task and environment moving the student closer to the object(s) and vice versa,
increasing contrast between the object(s) and background, appropriate lighting, and having an
organized environment with contrasting color to highlight areas like stairs and doorways
For students with reduced visual acuity, use of corrective lenses; sunglasses with photogrey lenses;
and turning away from, or repositioning the light source can be effective methods for addressing

For students with peripheral visual field loss, use of a long cane can help identify edges of an object
and/or utilizing sun wear or preferential seating to reduce glare and enhance acuity
Cortical (cerebral) visual impairment can be addressed through: having an environment that is visually
simplified and well organized, with visual cues to denote sections of the room; presenting visual
information to a student slowly, while allowing adequate response time for visual processing and
integration of information using more than one sense, such as smell or touch; using objects that

Dual Diagnosis Essay
Recent evidence suggests that amongst mental health and substance misuse service users (dual

maintain that dual diagnosis, service users present with challenging behaviour. Schizophrenia, bipolar
affective disorder, autism, Asperger s, personality and mood disorder are some of the mental health
problems exhibited by the patients within a dual diagnosis unit. Erkiran et al. (2006), Hoaken and

challenging behaviour presented by dual diagnosis, service users. Banerjee et al. (2002) maintain that
agitation, violent and aggressive actions are some of the problems that dual diagnosis, service users
will present with.
Violence and aggression refer to the manifestation of numerous behaviours (physical, verbal) that may
cause injury or harm to others, (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE, 2015). The
violent and aggressive behaviour are aimed towards themselves (patients), staff, properties, visitors
and other service users. In England between 2013 and 2014, it was reported that 68,683 attacks took

Strengths And Weaknesses Of A Parliamentary Government
A parliamentary government is a democratic form of government which operates on a party system. It
is the most popular and widely adopted form of democracy. A state that operates on a parliamentary
system is run by two executives, firstly the head of state who is either a monarch or president who
then appoints a prime minister as the head of government. A parliament can be run by either a single
majority political party or as a coalition government in which more than one party collaborate to form
the government. In this essay I will be assessing the key strengths and weaknesses associated with a
parliamentary government. In doing so I will conclude that whilst a parliamentary government has
weaknesses its strengths outweigh these and therefore it is the superior form of democratic
government.
As the most widely adopted form of democratic government there are many strengths associated with
a parliamentary government. The parliamentary system is often praised for the fast and efficient way
in which it is able to pass legislation. The reason this is possible is because unlike a presidential
system the legislative and executive power in a parliamentary system are merged together. Due to this
fusion of power legislation does not have to undergo a lengthy process and therefore laws can be
formulated and put into place much quicker(Bates, 1986: 114 5). Another advantage of a
parliamentary system is that the majority of the power is not held by one individual head of state but
rather is more evenly divided among a single party or coalition. One of the main benefits of this is that
as there is more of a division of power a parliamentary government is less prone to authoritarianism
than a presidential system. Juan Linz argues that a presidential system is more dangerous due to the
fact that; Winners and losers are sharply defined for the entire period of the presidential mandate
(Linz, 1990: 56), this sharp line between winners and losers increases tension between these two
groups and allows the winner to isolate themselves from other political parties (Linz, 1990: 56). Due
to this tension and isolation a presidential system is at a higher risk of turning into an authoritarian
regime than a parliamentary system.

Eleanor Roosevelt And His Life
Eleanor Roosevelt was born October 11, 1884 in New York City to father Elliot Roosevelt and mother
Anna Rebecca Hall. Eleanor s mother was a debutante who was disappointed in Eleanor s looks. It is
even reported that she called her granny (Ward,1). Her mother died when she was 8 leaving her to be
raised by her father. Elliot Roosevelt suffered from alcoholism and a narcotic addiction. He was often
not allowed to see her due to this condition and was committed to an asylum in France in 1890(
biography, 2). Her father also died when she was almost 10 years old. She was then sent, along with
her brother, to live with her maternal grandmother. This relationship was more out of duty than love.
As Eleanor grew up she learned three lessons she was unattractive; no one s love for her was likely to
last; and those whom she counted most could be counted on to let her down. ( Ward,1). She found she
enjoyed helping others and found it an escape from her problems. At age 15 she began school outside
of London at Allenswood School. The founder, Marie Souvestre, of this school called Eleanor the
most amiable girl I have ever met (Cook, 110). She introduced Eleanor to helping people in need and
taught her to think for herself. Mare also took her traveling and showed her many impoverish

Differences Between European Spanish And Latin American...
There are numerous variations of Spanish, of course, and a native speaker is expected to understand
all those variations, but for a new learner it can be confusing, since each Spanish speaker country has
their own accent, dialects, how to people address each other, and the way they conjugate the verbs.
The purpose of this essay is contrast and compare the differences between European Spanish and
Latin America Spanish when it comes about pronunciation, vocabulary, phonological differences and
so on. The most notable difference is Ustedes vs Nosotros. European Spanish has two plural forms for
the English you when address two or more people, which is Vosotros and Ustedes. In Spain, both are
used. Vosotros is the option for informal conversations, while ustedes is used in formal context. In
contrast, in Latin America you will always use ustedes to refer to a group. It does not matter if you are
talking to your friends, bosses, or your parents (Nagel). Subsequent the last point, we are going to
discuss Usted versus Tu versus vos. In Latin America, usted is more common to hear, but, once people
is getting more comfortable with each other, they may request you to use the tu form, which is
reserved for family and friends. But in some countries, such as Paraguay, El Salvador, Argentina and
Honduras they use vos instead of tu, which is equally informal. Same case in Spain, usted is reserved
for very formal situations. Instead, tu you can use it with younger people or informal

The Day Labor Market in Phoenix, Arizona Essay
The Day Labor Market in Phoenix, Arizona
Introduction
This paper focuses on the Macehualli Day Labor Union located in Phoenix, Arizona in the 85032 area.
Throughout the history of the United States, illegal immigrants have come from all over the world to
find work and a better way of life. It is estimated that right now there are about seven million illegal
aliens living in America. About 69% of these illegal immigrants are Mexican and over 283,000 of
them live in Arizona1. In this paper, we presuppose that the illegal aliens we refer to are Mexican.
This is because the aliens living in the geographic area around the day labor center we examine are
over 99%
Mexican (Reza, 2003, personal interview).

Background of Day Labor
3
These circumstances have lead to the reemergence of a concept that has existed for a long time: day
labor. Day labor used to be geared more towards American citizens looking for temporary jobs, but
has now taken a new turn in order to fit the necessities of illegal workers. Day labor is defined as a
practice of searching for work in open air, informal markets such as street corners or in formal temp
agencies ( Work, 307).
Under this type of labor, the undocumented immigrant is considered an independent contractor or a
temporary domestic worker, and therefore employers are not obliged to ask for work authorization (
Work, 325). Day labor is extremely beneficial to aliens in that it allows immigrants to enter the work
force without being required to have legal immigration status.
There are two types of day labor industries: informal and formal. Informal day labor consists mostly
of men gathering on street corners or parking lots to solicit work. It is considered informal because it
is in no way regulated. The men are often picked up by passing cars and hired for the day on terms
worked out between the employer and the laborer. By contrast, the formal day labor industry is
connected to for profit temp agencies. These agencies place workers in specific manual jobs and take a
percentage of the workers

gender, our history would be much different than what we are taught today. Our American economy
has become a melting pot of social diversification throughout history and within the economy. From
the earlier stages of history when gender stereotypes around the 1950s were typically seen as normal
in comparison to the 21st century with both partners wanting all responsibilities equalized. (As
Richard Dorment examples in his portion of Why Men Still Can t Have It All ) From upper class
women and men to middle class and lower class sexes, we all have common ground.
Gender defines us as human beings. It creates a distinction between us as people and highlights our
individualism. For most people to claim that our very existence is irrelevant is comparable to saying
that you or I are irrelevant. Socially, culturally, biologically, all the variables contributing define who
we are, what we are, and what changes will circumference us within our

Harley Davidson Inc. is a leading motorcycle manufacturer in America. The abbreviation used for the
company is H D or Harley and was formerly known as HDI. It is listed under New York Stock
Exchange with ticker symbol HOG. The company was founded in the first decade of 20th century in
Milwaukee Wisconsin. It was founded by the Davidson brothers William, Walter and Arthur along
with the William S. Harley. The company was among one of the two American motorcycle
manufacturers who survived through the Great Depression. Harley Davidson faced tough times in its
tenure; it has survived from the period of bad quality control and stiff competition from the Japanese
companies. They generally manufacture and sell heavy weight (more than 750 cc) motorcycles which
are designed for cruising on highways. Harley Davidson motorcycles are generally called as Harleys
and are famous for the unique design and exhaust note. The Harleys are generally known for the
tradition of heavy customization which in turn gives rise to chopper style of motorcycle. All the
Harley Davidson motorcycles represent the styles of classic Harley Designs except for modern VRSC
model family. The Harley Davidson Inc. tried

The Creative Decision Making in a Documentary Production
This journal inspects the importance of creative decision making in various aspects of documentary
production, examines whether those decisions help to make the film an engaging cinematic piece, and
explores the influences it might have on the society, the cinema and the subject, in relation to my own
experience in producing a 15min documentary film Hackney Pirates, and my understandings of
relevant practice from the contemporary cinema.
Introduction
Films about education for children in critical situations have been seen in cinema since the 1990s. For
example, Zhang Yimou s 1999 film Not One Less tells a story about a teenage girl Wei Minzhi who
volunteers to teach in a one room primary school and her relationships with the pupils. And ... Show

Slightly frustrated at first, we realised that the interviews are actually not as necessary as in Être et
Avoir on a second thought, in that the theme of Être et Avoir also includes the teacher s devotion to his
pupils, while Hackney Pirates is purely about the children s learning experience, which satisfies the
objectives of Hackney Pirates; moreover, the volunteer training session facilitated by one of the
founders as part of the narrative structure we ve planned can provide essential information of the
organisation.
The opening
Être et Avoir opens with a scene of tough labour work and living conditions in a rural farm, followed
by a montage sequence of a classroom with warm and cheerful décor. The warm interior in contrast to
the cold exterior emphasizes on the light and positive tone of the film, which consequently helps to
attract the viewers attention and keeps them engaged in the following sequences.
Inspired by the opening sequence of Être et Avoir, we wanted to open the film with a train passing by
city landscape and finally arriving at Haggerston Overground station where Hackney Pirates is based.
At first, the director was not sure about what exactly she was expecting from the shot, whether just the
train passing by city landscape would be enough as an introduction or we have to let it come to a stop
i.e. Haggerston in order to provide extra geographic information. We travelled many times on the train
between Shoreditch

Kauai Life In The 1800s
As the oldest island in Hawaii, Kauai has a wealth of history. Over the years, it has gone from ancient
battlefields to a modern economy. First inhabited around 200 to 600 AD, the original settlers most
likely reached Kauai from the Marquesas Islands nearly 2,000 miles away. Since these early
immigrants arrived, an estimated 1,000 of the 1,300 species on Kauai have gone extinct. Centuries
later, the Tahitians arrived and took over the island from the shorter Marquesans.
The Arrival of James Cook
Over the next few centuries, the Tahitians created a civilized society with a strong culture, religion and
laws. Wailua was set up as a sacred birthing ground for the royal family due to its sacredness to the
society. The early of the traditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christian missionaries began arriving in Kauai in the 1800s. In 1820, they set up the first mission
house in Waimea. The old kapu system was removed as Christian laws took over. While the reading
and writing taught by missionaries preserved Hawaiian culture for posterity, the daily culture of the
natives was slowly destroyed.
Kauai Experiences an Economic Boom
As Westerners arrived, Kauai quickly became a leading sugar producer. In Koloa Town, a sugar mill
helped to drive this economic boom. Quickly, other entrepreneurs followed suit to create sugar
plantations. They brought in immigrants from across the world to boost the workforce. These new
immigrants gave rise to the unique blend of cultures that exist within Kauai today.
For a brief time period, sugar and pineapple production comprised a large part of the economy. As
these industries fell, tourism became increasingly popular. Ultimately, Kauai lost its constitutional
monarchy in 1893. A group of foreigners conspired to end the Kingdom of Hawaii because the
constitution that was being amended was not in their best interests. Following a revolution, Hawaii
became a United States territory in the 1900s. Later on, it joined the United States as a state in

Arteriovenous Malformation
Retinal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare congenital vascular anomalies.
Initially named as racemous haemangiomas or cirsoidal aneurisms , these anomalies are defined by
aberrant arterio venous shunts [112]. Possible associations with cerebral arteriovenous malformation
have been described, i.e. Bonnet Dechaume Blanc syndrome (1937) or Wyburn Mason syndrome
(1943) [113]. Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are typically unilateral, non hereditary and
asymptomatic.
These vascular malformations usually involve a single or multiple quadrants of the fundus, being,
above all, found at the level of the papillomacular fascicle and the superotemporal quadrant [112 114].
Archer first classified in 1973 [114] these congenital malformations into ... Show more content on

aneurysm formation, intraretinal haemorrhage, exudation and cystoid macular oedema. Furthermore,
neovascular glaucoma and open angle glaucoma have been described as a result of a retinal central

extraocular sites, including central nervous system, orbit, eyelid, maxillofacial region, has been

Word Cult Research Paper
The definition of the word cult has completely reversed from its original meaning. How did the term
become such a widely debated slippery term? It has been a long road from its original meaning to its
current polar opposite, but it has been greatly prodded along by society s treatment of the term. The
common stereotype of cults as secretive member in black cloaks has been long propagated by various
mediums, leading to the contrast between common view and traditional definition. One of the main
offenders in the warping of the word cult has been its use in the media. most people get the majority of
their information about new or controversial religions through the media (Cowan). News has always
tended to focus on the negative things in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because different researchers use different definitions of the word cult, their conclusions can t be
compared to each other and can t be held as a standard to judge other groups by. Lalich says that cult
scholars are as the blind men examining the elephant : each with their own frame of reference and
own conclusions. The term cult as an analytic category, as researchers have attempted to use it, has
just as unclear parameters as when it is used to delineate dangerous groups. Often what some see as
only aspects of cults are used by others as definitive characteristics. Without a knowledge of specific
qualities, the results of each researcher are independent and unhelpful, and only contribute to the
confusion of the meaning of the term

Cognitive Dissonance Paper
Introduction
The words Cognitive Dissonance were fascinatingly interesting; therefore more research went into the
origin of these two words. Both words are Middle English, which was the English in use from 12th to
15th centuries and both used in the 15th century [ (Merriam Webster, 2011) ]. Cognitive is an adjective
meaning, there is physical activity involving the mind; be it: thinking, reasoning or remembering.
Dissonance is a noun meaning, when there is a tug of war between one s actions and one s mind [
(Merriam Webster, 2011) ].This paper will explore that tug of war of the mind (conscious) and actions
(subconscious) and how one can and will justify behavior that a direct dissension from his or her

She was also embarrassed and did not want to let her co workers know she had chosen so badly when
it came to her choice in the man she was hoping to marry. Her ethics were compromised by her desire
to get herself together to be able to show a good face at work, yet was unable to face her co workers
and work through her depression and grief over her lost relationship she called in sick even though she
was not physically sick.
Explanation
Cognitive Dissonance Theory (delete if there are no others)
According to Leon Festinger (1957), Dissonance and consonance are relations among cognitions that
is, among opinions, beliefs, knowledge of the environment, and knowledge of one s own actions and
feelings. Two opinions, or beliefs, or items of knowledge are dissonant with each other if they do not
fit together (p. 25). When the cognitions are of opposite actions or feelings, they are dissonant.
Cognitive dissonance can perpetuate a conflict and in Alice s situation, it did. Alice, by definition, is
an honest, hardworking adult with morals and values. However, she encountered a personal situation
with her boyfriend that caused her to have dissonant cognitions. She knew it was wrong to call her
employer and inform them she was ill and unable to go to work. Calling her employer and lying about
her state of health caused discomfort (that is what dissonance does) and to justify lying, she tries to
convince herself she did the right thing. This justification comes

Problems In New York City Essay
New York City and its suburbs are world renowned for many things. However, when it comes to
bicycle integration with public transportation, New York City lies in the shadow of other cities such as
Portland and San Francisco. In these cities, all public buses have bike racks, trains have bicycle
storage, cyclists have access to secure parking at metro stations, and safe bikeways provide cyclists
with a route to metro stations. All four of these characteristics are needed to foster a bicycle friendly
transit system. However, while New York City excels in certain areas of this criteria, it lacks bike
racks on buses and secure bike parking at subway stations. These problems also persist in New York
City s suburbs; however, the suburbs fall even farther behind the city due to their lack of safe
bikeways. With careful planning, these problems can be solved. To fix the lack of secure parking at
downtown metro stations, I suggest implementing bike lockers at large parking garages in the city.
The lack of secure parking at suburban metro stations can be resolved with more bike lockers at city
stations that serve suburban commuter routes. For the shortage of bike racks on city and suburban
buses, the solution is to simply install more bike racks on these buses. Finally, the lack of safe
bikeways in the suburbs can be resolved by building more bus stops closer to residential areas, which
will reduce the need for cyclists to travel long distances on dangerous main roads.

Year-Round Schooling Analysis
After reading Year Round Schooling Explained by Jaclyn Zubrzycki, Stop the Summer Slide by Nina
Rees, and Kids Need Year Round Schools to Compete by Anne McFeatters, year round school sounds
like an extraordinary idea for schools. Year round schools seem to be a way to bring in more breaks,
but more schooling involved. Multi week summers end in money loss of parents, and academic loss in
students. Also, year round demonstrates new ideas and concepts of academic success. In Year Round
Schooling Explained by Jaclyn Zubrzycki, I support year round school versus standard school because
of the benefits of impacts from the new school timeline. It impresses me that such a drastic change of
school arrangement can stem summer learning loss, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with the comeback of school we need to Pity our poor teachers who spend every September
reprogramming children to do their homework, spending hours on remedial lessons and waiting until
overtired children readjust to regular bedtimes says McFeatters. She made me realize that schooling
lacks over the summer and forgets to stick for the arrival of school. As stated, teenage workers jobs
have become taken by those whom are unsuccessful adults trying to make a living. Being a teenager, I
plan on trying to get a job, but my education is also in my hands of retaining throughout a summer of
jobs and even summer school to keep up with my schooling to get into more colleges with an
overloaded class agenda. Year round school would keep up with my education, and there would be
more breaks to find jobs here and there to keep up with extra curricular, or even my car. Altogether,
year round school is an idea of success and needs to become more known to keep the nation s
knowledge developing. The more academics a child learns, the more growing of academic maturation.
Although year round school seems time consuming, it is all but a new layout for schools to show off
their intelligence. More jobs will become fulfilled with the new year round impacting on a schedule
known to follow along an entire year. Make more year round schools; it sounds like an extravagant

The Secret Annexe, By Anne Frank
The Secret Annexe was considered to be an old factory where Anne Frank s father Otto Frank used to
work. An old house was present at the back of it i.e. the place where Anne Frank and her family i.e.
eight Jews stayed during two years of the Second World War. The Secret Annexe was very small,
clumsy and very uncomfortable to live in. There were only few rooms which were present in the
Secret Annexe to live in. So, to live in the Secret Annexe, the families had to share between
themselves. Anne shared her room with Dr. Dussel. Otto,Edith and Margot also shared their room. Mr.
and Mrs.Van Daan also shared a room. Peter had his own small room with the stairs leading to the
attic. Besides the bedrooms, the only other rooms which were present in the Secret Annexe were the
attic and the bathroom. There was a kitchen, but it was in the bottom floor of the house, which was not
considered part of the Secret Annexe. The Secret Annexe was present just above the street level, but
there was no guarantee at all that people who walk by the road couldn t see Anne and other people. On
the first day of their Secret Annexe as they moved in, they made dark curtains to hang up over the
windows, so no one could see o peep inside the Annexe. The curtains were not exactly real curtains.
They were only loose strips of material, all different shapes, quality and pattern which Anne and her
father sewed together in a very unprofessional way. As Anne had mentioned in her diary that These

Before I begin a personal career, I hope to serve as an officer in the Navy through the NROTC
program at Carnegie Mellon. Experience as a midshipman and a military officer builds a solid
foundation of leadership, experience, and personal responsibility that is hard to replicate through any
other program. But beyond the benefit to me, I also give myself a personal moral obligation to serve. I

The Legal Aspects Of The Surrogate Pregnancy
For most individuals, surrogacy is the only way to have children. Thus, modern reproductive
technologies are on top. However, there is a question that remains difficult physiologically, legally and
ethically. Let alone the Old Testament Genesis 16, which states that Abraham s wife could not get
pregnant, and her husband had to use a maid Hagar, impregnating her naturally. Slaves, concubines
and peasant, were surrogate mothers by traditional way. Now it is intelligently called partial surrogacy
or surrogacy genetic linkage , and the method of fertilization is not as romantic or godly like. History
of Medicine claims that, ancient Indian reproductive technologies were the best. However, they turn to

It is, first of all, the problem of extra embryos and the possibility of their destruction, sale, abuse, and
a number of others that remains unsolved. Theoretically, the number of potential children from one
donor may exceed the entire population of the earth. From a utilitarian s point of view, the act of
surrogacy is ethical as the families as well as the surrogate mother are all happy in the end.
Furthermore, another major ethical question been asked is whether: to hide or not to hide? No state
requires parents who have used surrogate motherhood, to talk about the process with their children.
This will be seen as invasion of privacy and a violation of the autonomy of the family.
A Surrogate mother is a woman who becomes pregnant, carries and delivers a child for another couple
in other words Commissioners parents. Surrogacy can be complete or partial. In the case of complete,
egg and sperm available to authorized parents or donors. For the full surrogacy IVF is used. It is
preferably in the partial. Thus, it is the problem that is one so much medical as ethical and legal. And
here can be a lot the views, I will present my own. 47% of couples are childless; more than a third of
them cannot have children because of infertility. In different cases, the situation may be different if a

  • 2. Criminal Law Essay Illinois revised statutes state that, a person is justified in the use of deadly force when that person reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself. (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1977, ch. 38, par. 7 1). When a court looks to define whether a defendant was reasonably justified in his use of deadly force they look at four factors: (1) Significant physical disparity in size between the defendant and the decedent(s) (2) the defendant avidly attempts to avoid confrontation (3) The defendant feels threaten by the decedent(s) (4) the decedent(s) continued pursuit of the defendants after a had been fired. The People of the State of Illinois v. S.M., a minor, 416 N.E.2d 1212, 1212(Ill.App. Ct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In People v S.M. the defendant is seen actively trying to avoid confrontation and thus giving the court evidence that he felt his life was truly in danger. The court stated that his fears were well founded is borne out by the appearance and conduct of Gale s four companions and by the fact that the boys were in way discouraged by the respondent s gun. The respondent made repeated efforts to flee. At no time did he stand his ground or advance toward the other boys. Likewise, in People v Shipp the defendant is seen trying to stop the decedent by using words. Please don t come any closer. The decedent continued to advance and the defendant began backing up . It is only when he gets within proximity does the defendant deem it necessary to act. The court found that the defendant acted in a way that was justified in the use of deadly force to protect herself from imminent harm. In contrast in People v Moore, the defendant did not avoid confrontation, just before the defendants use of deadly force he is told to go back home by his neighbor. He instead makes the decision to return with the weapon and use it if necessary. This leads the court to believe he didn t act in a way to avoid confrontation. The third factor that the court uses to justify the reasonable use of deadly force is that the defendant feels threaten by the decedent(s). In People ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Thomas Middleton s A Chaste Maid Essay Here Comes Our Gossips Now : Notions of Selfhood and Agency in Thomas Middleton s A Chaste Maid in Cheapside In the third act of Thomas Middleton s A Chaste Maid at Cheapside (1613), the audience is presented with the christening of the Allwit newborn. As Mrs. Allwit s bed is brought onto the stage, the christening is attended by five gossips, two Puritan women, Maudlin Yellowhammer, Mrs. Allwit s midwife, and a number of other women namely, the majority of the play s eighteen female characters. However, the female characters are allowed to dominate the stage only up to a point, as the christening scene is also witnessed by Allwit, whose sole function in the scene is to comment on the events of the christening. It is through Allwit that the audience learns that the women are overindulging in the food and wine served to them; he also alerts us of the women s, to use Gail Kern Paster s euphemism, leaking. Most importantly, however, Allwit becomes a mouthpiece of sorts for the social and cultural perceptions of these women. While the christening scene has often received critical attention due to its portrayal of feminine excess in its worst possible form, a more nuanced reading of the gossips role in this play is possible. Rather than merely demonstrating the utter depravity of characters due to their gender and social rank, the gossips conduct during the christening may be construed as a key point of rebellion against the limitations of the patriarchal society ... • 9. Argumentative Essay On Magic Mushrooms Psychedelic Mushrooms Psychedelic mushrooms are rumored to have a long and holy background, which dates back to 9000 B.C in North African indigenous cultures. Rock paintings, statues and manuscripts depict what some historians believe to be magic mushrooms. This idea is highly controversial, as other historians claim that none of the evidence found is definitive, and that people are seeing what they want to see. Westerners began to eat magic mushrooms during the 1950s; throughout the 1960s and 1970s, hallucinogenic drugs became widely popular and psychedelic mushroom use became inextricably tied to the hippie movement. Whether or not a drug is legal or illegal, people will still find a way to do it. People want what they can t have. Think, if coffee was illegal, would more people want it? (I do not know the answer to this). However, that does not mean that we should just give in and start making drugs legal, because that is us practically putting drugs into people s hands. Drug addicts can end up on Welfare and find themselves troubled to find a job. Drugs cause people to make bad decisions and can get people killed. Pregnant women taking drugs could cause their baby to have birth defects. They can damage your brain, heart, and other important organs. People who support legalizing drugs state that the government should be more focused on other crimes such as robbery, murder and rape. These offenses are closely tied to the drug market, so if we could get rid of these unnecessary drugs, we could decrease crime rates. There are better, safer alternatives to using drugs. • 11. Overfishing And Its Effects On Humans Fish, one of the worlds leading food source in all regions of the world, but what if one day that food source was to deplete so drastically that one could no longer use it as a food source? What would happen to the people that rely solely on this source? What would happen to the people that relied on catching fish as a job? What would happen to the worlds economy? These are only a few questions that should be a concern in the result of Overfishing. The ocean is a big and mass world living among us, taking up seventy eight percent of our space on Earth. This makes the idea of overfishing sound ridiculous and people often ignore the idea. How could we possibly deplete such a large resource? However, overfishing is not a concept to be taken lightly. Not every fish in the ocean is editable and not every fish is able to be reached by fisherman. However, the fish we do commonly eat and catch is being caught at an alarming rate, faster than they are able to reproduce, but we will talk about this more later. For one to better understand overfishing, one must be aware of the causes of Overfishing and the effects it has on our society. In order to better understand a concept, one must really dig down beneath the surface in order to truly understand it. We will go over the causes and effects of overfishing and its effects on the marine life, what it does to the food supply for civilization, and the subtle signs warning us about overfishing. The Pros And Cons Of Protectionism Encyclopaedia Britannica (2014) defines protectionism as the Policy of protecting domestic industries against foreign competition by means of tariffs, subsidies, import quotas, or other restrictions or handicaps placed on the imports of foreign competitors. Rising levels of globalization in modern times has led to a growing interdependence of countries around the world and increase in trade links between them (Johnson and Turner, 2010, p. 21). This in turn has created popular discourse on the idea of a global economy arising out of free trade instead of country specific economies, and consideration of global costs of protectionism. Even though the countervailing duty actions did increase, they did not result in a wholesale rush as they were temporary. Nationalism and Protectionism Ahlerup and Hansson (2011, p. 432 433) quoting Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2008 define nationalism as an ideology adhered to by members of a nation; an ideology which draws on their duty of being loyal to the nation; additionally the ultimate welfare of the nation is highly emphasized. It is also the attitude of members and how they perceive themselves as a part of a nation. Although nationalism is determined by various factors, for the purpose of this essay, nationalism refers to civic nationalism, which is defined in political or territorial terms, where people are united by a common purpose. Mayda and Rodrik (2005, p. 1394) state that nearly 60% people from strong nationalist countries garner negative points of views in relation to imported goods and are usually less pro trade. • 13. The Civil Rights Movement And The Federal Government... I took another visit to the Library of Congress, located in Washington D.C. I went to James Madison building. My purpose at the library was to research The Civil Rights Movement and the Federal Government Records of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Police Community Relations in Urban Areas, 1954 1966 and obtain information from the Newspaper and Current Periodical reading room. I was really disappointed that the librarian directed to me to ProQuest periodical. There was no other access of information. When I enter the manuscript room, it was the first time for me using microfilm and I was watch intensely by the staff when I was using the reel machine. The microfilms are located in the Madison building. The records focused on Black Americans, civil rights, Commission on civil Rights, police, race relations, racial discrimination, and urban area. • 16. Strengths And Weaknesses Of A Parliamentary Government A parliamentary government is a democratic form of government which operates on a party system. It is the most popular and widely adopted form of democracy. A state that operates on a parliamentary system is run by two executives, firstly the head of state who is either a monarch or president who then appoints a prime minister as the head of government. A parliament can be run by either a single majority political party or as a coalition government in which more than one party collaborate to form the government. In this essay I will be assessing the key strengths and weaknesses associated with a parliamentary government. In doing so I will conclude that whilst a parliamentary government has weaknesses its strengths outweigh these and therefore it is the superior form of democratic government. As the most widely adopted form of democratic government there are many strengths associated with a parliamentary government. The parliamentary system is often praised for the fast and efficient way in which it is able to pass legislation. The reason this is possible is because unlike a presidential system the legislative and executive power in a parliamentary system are merged together. Due to this fusion of power legislation does not have to undergo a lengthy process and therefore laws can be formulated and put into place much quicker(Bates, 1986: 114 5). Another advantage of a parliamentary system is that the majority of the power is not held by one individual head of state but rather is more evenly divided among a single party or coalition. One of the main benefits of this is that as there is more of a division of power a parliamentary government is less prone to authoritarianism than a presidential system. Juan Linz argues that a presidential system is more dangerous due to the fact that; Winners and losers are sharply defined for the entire period of the presidential mandate (Linz, 1990: 56), this sharp line between winners and losers increases tension between these two groups and allows the winner to isolate themselves from other political parties (Linz, 1990: 56). Due to this tension and isolation a presidential system is at a higher risk of turning into an authoritarian regime than a parliamentary system. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Eleanor s mother was a debutante who was disappointed in Eleanor s looks. It is even reported that she called her granny (Ward,1). Her mother died when she was 8 leaving her to be raised by her father. Elliot Roosevelt suffered from alcoholism and a narcotic addiction. He was often not allowed to see her due to this condition and was committed to an asylum in France in 1890( biography, 2). Her father also died when she was almost 10 years old. She was then sent, along with her brother, to live with her maternal grandmother. This relationship was more out of duty than love. As Eleanor grew up she learned three lessons she was unattractive; no one s love for her was likely to last; and those whom she counted most could be counted on to let her down. ( Ward,1). She found she enjoyed helping others and found it an escape from her problems. At age 15 she began school outside of London at Allenswood School. There are numerous variations of Spanish, of course, and a native speaker is expected to understand all those variations, but for a new learner it can be confusing, since each Spanish speaker country has their own accent, dialects, how to people address each other, and the way they conjugate the verbs. The purpose of this essay is contrast and compare the differences between European Spanish and Latin America Spanish when it comes about pronunciation, vocabulary, phonological differences and so on. The most notable difference is Ustedes vs Nosotros. European Spanish has two plural forms for the English you when address two or more people, which is Vosotros and Ustedes. In Spain, both are used. Vosotros is the option for informal conversations, while ustedes is used in formal context. In contrast, in Latin America you will always use ustedes to refer to a group. It does not matter if you are talking to your friends, bosses, or your parents (Nagel). Subsequent the last point, we are going to discuss Usted versus Tu versus vos. In Latin America, usted is more common to hear, but, once people is getting more comfortable with each other, they may request you to use the tu form, which is reserved for family and friends. But in some countries, such as Paraguay, El Salvador, Argentina and Honduras they use vos instead of tu, which is equally informal. Same case in Spain, usted is reserved for very formal situations. Day labor used to be geared more towards American citizens looking for temporary jobs, but has now taken a new turn in order to fit the necessities of illegal workers. Day labor is defined as a practice of searching for work in open air, informal markets such as street corners or in formal temp agencies ( Work, 307). Under this type of labor, the undocumented immigrant is considered an independent contractor or a temporary domestic worker, and therefore employers are not obliged to ask for work authorization ( Work, 325). Day labor is extremely beneficial to aliens in that it allows immigrants to enter the work force without being required to have legal immigration status. There are two types of day labor industries: informal and formal. Informal day labor consists mostly of men gathering on street corners or parking lots to solicit work. It is considered informal because it is in no way regulated. The men are often picked up by passing cars and hired for the day on terms worked out between the employer and the laborer. By contrast, the formal day labor industry is connected to for profit temp agencies. These agencies place workers in specific manual jobs and take a percentage of the workers ... However, when it comes to bicycle integration with public transportation, New York City lies in the shadow of other cities such as Portland and San Francisco. In these cities, all public buses have bike racks, trains have bicycle storage, cyclists have access to secure parking at metro stations, and safe bikeways provide cyclists with a route to metro stations. All four of these characteristics are needed to foster a bicycle friendly transit system. However, while New York City excels in certain areas of this criteria, it lacks bike racks on buses and secure bike parking at subway stations. These problems also persist in New York City s suburbs; however, the suburbs fall even farther behind the city due to their lack of safe bikeways. With careful planning, these problems can be solved. To fix the lack of secure parking at downtown metro stations, I suggest implementing bike lockers at large parking garages in the city. The lack of secure parking at suburban metro stations can be resolved with more bike lockers at city stations that serve suburban commuter routes. For the shortage of bike racks on city and suburban buses, the solution is to simply install more bike racks on these buses. Finally, the lack of safe bikeways in the suburbs can be resolved by building more bus stops closer to residential areas, which will reduce the need for cyclists to travel long distances on dangerous main roads.
