Fraternity Learning Communities
Social Fraternities As Learning Communities D. Jose Duzan Grand Valley State University Social
Fraternities As Learning Communities INTRODUCTION Greek–lettered organizations often carry a
negative stigma, due largely to a growingly publicized minority of fraternities and sororities in the
media. Similarly to ethnic groups that are marginalized in much the same way, these minorities have
not represented the larger body as a whole, regardless of membership. However, in more recent
history, the publicity of these minority members has aided in the cultivation of a such a negative
reputation. The effect has led to a further decline in value systems that many of these organizations
were initially intended to uphold. The impact this has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Panhellenic Fraternities In The Greek System
In today's society, going to college has become the norm. Freshly graduated students escape high
school to become a freshman again. By August students start filing into packed cars to leave for
college and try to find their place in this world. Out of the millions of students that attend each year,
a percentage of them will rush a fraternity or sorority for the chance of sister or brotherhood. To
some it is a sign of superior status, and others it not the right fit. Greek life is known from
everything to volunteering for the community to the wild parties that somehow do not get busted by
the cops every weekend. In the nation, Kimberly Brandy on Marie Claire states there are 5,975
fraternities governed by the North American Interfraternity Conference and 3,127 sororities
governed by the National Panhellenic Conference. At Kansas State alone, about one in five students
are a part of the greek community. K–State is also known for its diversity. We take pride in this fact
here at Kansas State, but as a whole, the nation is having troubles combining these prides. It is in the

From the start of time, and even now, Greek life is white dominate. Since this is the case, it is fairly
normal for Greek row houses are known as white sororities or white fraternities. The Greek system
has been around for hundreds of years. So historically it makes sense that there would be
segregation, because it was made in a time that owning a slave was a common occurrence. Today
there are black pride groups and organizations, such as the Divine Nine. The Divine Nine is a set of
nine fraternities and sororities, created in the early to mid 1900's, that are all black. Of these nine,
Kansas State has seven. These organizations are meant to include the sisterhood and brotherhood
that Greek life gives you while indulging in the pride of their ethnic

Cc: Texas A&M Board of Trustees
From: Tyler Vara
Subject: On–Campus Fraternity Housing Proposal
Purpose
The purpose of this proposal is to request permission to set in motion the development of on–
campus fraternity housing at Texas A&M in order to provide formal housing for the universities
male Greek population, while also adding another source of revenue for Texas A&M acquired
through rental fees paid by fraternities with on–campus housing.
Summary
As of now fraternity housing at Texas A&M is virtually nonexistent, with fraternities forced to
purchase land on the outskirts of Bryan/College Station. Texas A&M has a large amount of land that

The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities Essay
The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities
Joining fraternities and sororities has been a long tradition among many college and university
students within the United States. As the number of students entering colleges and universities grow,
the influence and pressure to join fraternities and sororities grow as well. According to a research
project conducted by Dr. Gary D. Malaney, associate professor of education and director of student
affairs at the University of Massachusetts, "58.6% [of 413 students surveyed] reported having at
least a few friends who belong to the Greek Area" (Malaney 2). However, the Kappa Sigma
fraternity at the University of Miami in February 2004 was found at fault for the death of Chad
Meredith for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among the many fraternities in the United States, some fraternities are said to accept students after
"drinking a whole bottle of alcohol nonstop" (Brown). Flushing toilets after a current member takes
a dump, not sleeping for two days, carrying bricks in backpacks for weeks, and sexual intercourse
are some of the many shocking things new members will do to earn their way into a fraternity or
sorority. According to Kevin Brown, "you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do
to get in, and that could be anything." Some sororities "will paddle each other till their behinds are
bleeding. They will force girls to do things like boob ranking, where they're given five minutes to
examine each other's chests and rank themselves by size" (Morehouse) before getting accepted.
Clearly, fraternities and sororities often do not respect the rights, opinions and well–being of their
potential members.
For many fraternities and sororities, academics are certainly not the key methods of attracting new
members. Surprisingly, fraternities and sororities have quite an effect on student academic
performances. According to Malaney's research, only 4% of all fraternity members surveyed said
their academic performance improved while 26% claimed that their performance got worse
(Malaney 3). Among the sorority members surveyed, 6% said their academic performance

Fraternity And Sorority
College students have many life altering questions they must answer through the journey of further
education. From a student's major, living circumstance, classes, and getting involved on campus, it
can start to get stressful if there are mixed signals about what they are getting into. Getting involved
on campus is a great way to meet people and improve skills needed after graduation. A student
might choose to be involved in Greek life because of the parties, friends, and job application quirks
down the road (Joining a Fraternity, np). The outcome involves those things, but it also involves
leadership traits, lifelong relationships, the ability to surpass the negative public perception of
Fraternity and Sorority men and women, and keep up good grades. While involved in Greek life,
each chapter has an executive council which is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a student does not have that certain GPA requirement they get dropped from recruitment before
the chapter even considers looking at anything else. Students must maintain a certain GPA to stay in
the chapter. Most fraternities or sororities have weekly study groups. My chapter has a Geek of the
Week, which goes to whoever makes the highest grades on major tests. If a student's GPA drops
under a certain score, then they have to have a certain amount of study hours or note checks until
their grade goes back up. If their GPA is so low for a long amount of time they might get kicked out
of the fraternity or sorority. Students knowing that they have to keep their grades up for a fraternity
or sorority could help them graduate. "A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those
who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non–fraternity/sorority persons
graduate" (Fraternity and Sorority Facts, np). Fraternities and sororities are helping their members
graduate rather than helping them party all the time like most people

Colleges Should Dispose Of Fraternities
Many Americans believe that fraternities embody the college experience and that they are essential
for every student. Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. Fraternities can actually
encourage exclusivity and discriminatory behavior. They also serve no purpose that other
organizations do not already offer. Therefore, colleges should dispose of fraternities.
Fraternities encourage exclusivity and discrimination, so they must be banned. As Stephanie Saul
states in her New York Times article, "Harvard Restrictions Could Reshape Exclusive Student
Clubs," fraternities can "foster an atmosphere of misogyny, sexual misconduct, and entitlement"
which led to the restrictions enacted by Harvard University and other colleges across the

The Fraternity Of The Brotherhood
Jesse joined Alpha Phi Alpha in order to bond with like–minded individuals. Alpha Phi Alpha was
the first Black Greek–letter intercollegiate fraternity in the United States founded on Cornell 's
campus in 1906 initially created as a Black men 's literary and support group. The purpose of the
organization is to foster strong bonds between men of African descent who faced racial prejudice.
The organization combines social purpose with social action. Jesse wanted to be part of the
brotherhood: I just had more relationships with African Americans at Cornell than I did with
majority students...As far as my pledge interest, and subsequently being initiated by Alpha Phi
Alpha fraternity, a couple of my close friends were in the frat. They spoke good things of it, and I
thought that it would be nice to join and be part of the brotherhood that was for us.
Harriet found solace in pledging Delta Sigma Theta, a Black Greek–letter sorority dedicated to
public service, which was founded in 1913. One of her really good friends, who was a Black Cuban,
decided to pledge with her. She also sang in Pamoja–Ni Gospel choir. Harriet talks about the
importance of community in an isolated environment:
I think that Blacks who wind up going to Cornell, in part because we have this shared experience of
being in an isolated environment. I think all of us grow, in part as a result of figuring out how to deal
with whatever challenges come up, the social and cultural challenges, and I think that

I absolutely believe that my tenacity and commitment to do research about the fraternity gave me a
better understanding of what it means to be a man of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
While doing extensive enquiry about the fraternity I sprawled across all of the amazing leaders that

were at the forefront of the civil rights movement and were leaders of their generation. They stood
for what the seven Jewels fought for at Cornell University. They wanted change for the African

I took my attentiveness further and did some exploration on the Delta Nu chapter of Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity which was established on May 27, 1950, at Maryland State College. The young
collegiate men on the campus of Maryland State College and present–day University of Maryland
Easter Shore stress the importance of education by hosting an annual "Education Week" which
included an annual educational assembly program and high school day where school tours were
given and gave away a scholarship. Also, being familiar with the major partnerships such as the
March of Dimes and Alpha Phi Alpha's national programs like Go–To–High–School–Go–To–
College and Brothers Keeper. The Name Brothers Keeper came from a sermon Martin Luther King
Jr gave "I Am My Brother's Keeper".
In addition, being able to be a role model for young black men is vital. Especially being an African
American male and knowing the stereotypes and stigmas that are placed upon us isn't right.
Knowing that young boys will say I want to be like them one day is important just as much as
community unity and stop black on black crime if we all come together we can make a bigger

Masculinity in Fraternities Essay
All over the world Masculinity has many different cultural definitions. Depending where someone is
from, and what they were brought up to believe, defines what the term "masculinity" entails.
Different Social institutions all over the United States, such as the military, sports, clubs, and
fraternities, have been constructing their interpretation of masculinity. One major social institution
that is active in thousands of Universities across the United States is campus fraternities. Campus
fraternities create their own sense of masculinity by generating certain requirements and
characteristics a man must hold in order to represent them as a part of their fraternity. So what

Most fraternities have a house where usually about 20–30 from the fraternity live, depending on the
size of the house. They hold weekly meetings that everybody is expected to attend and many of the
fraternities have traditions that they have been following for decades. From listing all these
traditions it is already easy to acknowledge how fraternities definitely fall under the category of a
social institution.
So the question is how masculinity defined culturally in a fraternity and how does it create its own
sense of masculinity? In order for someone to join a fraternity they must go through a process of
meetings, parties, interviews, before they are given a bid for the fraternity. Even after that they are
not officially a part of the organization. They have to go through a semester of 'pledging', which can
sometimes be a grueling process, until they are formally part of the fraternity. Fraternities need to
time to figure out who really fits in best with their image and helps give the frat a good name. The
process of entering a fraternities begins, usually happens with in the first couple of weeks at school.
All different fraternities set up tents, wearing t–shirts or tanks with their Greek letters and try to 'sell'
their fraternity to the public. If interested then a guy will attend a couple of rush parties thrown by
the fraternities, to try and get to know them. Throughout this process many of the guys feel a

Fraternities And Sororities Essay
Fraternities and Sororities are a group of students at universities and colleges who have the same
interest, job, purpose, etc. (Merrian–Webster, 1828) Fraternities are a group of men usually they
called themselves "brotherhood", it somehow interesting because the members was treated each

this kind of hazing was not allowed because of the potentially deadly condition of unusual kidney

It is important to discuss the history behind fraternities and sororities in order to gain a full
understanding of how they can affect ways in which students interact with each other. The first
Greek letter organization was created in 1776 as a way for students to meet with each other and
discuss current events and literature. From there on, more of these groups were started at schools
around the country. It was rare to have women be appointed into one of these because of their lesser
social status. It was not until almost 100 years later that a women's organization was founded.
Because of their rich history, fraternities are more dominate than sororities and much more well–off.

Should College Students Join Fraternities Or Fraternity
Being a sister or brother of a greek house comes with great responsibilities. Being a part of a
sorority or fraternity consumes students time with events and parties, which prevents them from
having enough time to complete their school work. Attendance is required despite having academic
responsibilities. Many sororities and fraternities make it mandatory to attend most of the greek
events that will go on throughout the school year. In the article Should College Students Join
Fraternities or Sororities, Schwarz explains that fraternities and sororities, "absorb time that could be
better spent on academic work and extracurricular activities". For many students, college life will be
challenging at first, having to deal with all the work, and keeping up with classes that might be very
rigorous depending on the major they decide to pursue. Joining a sorority or fraternity will take up
most of the time that could be spent getting work done, with social gatherings, parties, or just
hanging out with other members of the same house. In an article by Megan Tackett, a former
sorority member gives her experience on her greek life, she write about how she spent, "10–15
hours a week dedicated to the sorority". This shows that a lot of time goes into being a member of
the greek society, although there are only about 168 hours in a week, by subtract the hours spent
sleeping, plus the hours spent working, if the students have a job or are planning to do work study,

Flat Hat Club Fraternities
Since 1750, starting with the Flat Hat Club, fraternities have been an essential aspect of social life
for numerous college settings. Over 75 nationally recognized fraternities have been established in
universities around the nation. This has caused many different opinions toward these secret
societies. Universities have made the push to permanently remove fraternities from campuses.
Racial slurs being streamed online, mass reports of sexual assault, and excessive financial
obligations are but only a few of the allegations that Greek lettered societies have received
throughout their existence. Nevertheless, despite the stereotypes associated with these organizations,
there are numerous pros and cons that result from their existence on universities.

Stereotypes In Fraternity Men
Frat Boy? No, Fraternity Men
Frat boys. Most of us have heard the term whether college students or just from the media. For
majority of people, the word is has negative connotations. These well–known stereotypes are
depicted very well by the Delta Tau Chi house from the movie Animal House. The Deltas are
notoriously known for being obnoxious and rowdy (Animal House, 1978). Movies such as Animal
House and many others like it are what lead people to fully believe these stereotypes. According to
Brett Wells, most non Greek students react very negatively toward fraternities, while Greek students
generally react positively. Wells says, "Although it is not surprising that members of fraternities and
sororities see their groups in a positive light, what is more interesting is that independent students
harbor negative, rather than neutral, attitudes towards Greek groups" (Wells, September 2008). To
many people's surprise, these stereotypes are not the main purpose of fraternities. Although many
movies depict these fraternity men as drunken, careless, and disrespectful boys, most fraternal
organizations value academics, philanthropy, and brotherhood.
A common stereotype is fraternity membership being associated with disrespect toward women and
sexual assault. Animal House is an iconic example of fraternity men stereotypes (Animal House,
1978). This movie includes multiple representations of well known stereotypes throughout. In one
scene of the movie, this is shown when a drunk girl

Delta Sigma Pi Fraternities
Fraternities have a very misconstrued reputation in our society today. They are known to be rowdy,
inappropriate, and extremely disrespectful. A well–known business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, takes
a step out of these characteristics. They describes themselves as, "a professional fraternity organized
to foster the study of business in universities; to encourage scholarship, social activity and the
association of students for their mutual advancement by research and practice" (Delta Sigma Pi's
Purpose, Mission, and Core Values). Their main goals are to maintain an interesting profile,
differentiate themselves from other fraternities, and as an organization, they are looking to make
money. Inside of Delta Sigma Pi's logo, there are a lot of pictures and colors that separate
themselves from other fraternities. Taking all of their meanings into consideration, this fraternity
based their core values off of all of the symbols. There is a ship at sea, a skull and ... Show more

The brothers of this fraternity are given high quality training, they go to events where major
business leaders are present, and they are able to receive a mentor in the business field to help them

DeltaSig, the organization of this fraternity does it for reasons that benefit themselves. By providing
high–quality training, it helps the members become extremely successful. It seems as though in the
eyes of the DeltaSig organization, having their members become successful is used as a money
maker. When people are successful in our society, it is assumed that they have a lot of money. What
else would one do with your money other than donate it to the place that helped you become so
successful? The organization of Delta Sigma Pi, even though they are creating successful beings out

leadership training, networking opportunities, emotional and academic support. Why should there be

The Dark Power Of Fraternities Analysis
Pushed Under the Rug Red solo cups litter the wooden floor, stained with stale beer. The light

In her article, "The Dark Power of Fraternities," Flanagan argues that,"The also have a long, dark
history of violence against their own members and visitors to their houses, which makes them in
many respects at odds with the core mission of college itself." In other words, there may be a lot of
positives to fraternities; however, there are also some very serious issues that need to be dealt with
and acknowledged. Because fraternities tend to get off with little punishment, it shows that the
behavior is okay. Therefore, the number of injuries/deaths, assault, and rape continue to grow. For
instance, a 19 year old sophomore, Amanda Andaverde, spent her first and only month at the
University of Idaho. A member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, she spent a weekday with her
sisters at Sigma Chi. Getting bored of continuous "drinking games" and forced flirting with an
"assigned date," Amanda left to go to another fraternity, Sigma Alpha. This is where she would fall
three stories off a "sleeping porch," and suffer traumatic brain injury. Sleeping porches are referred
to as "rack rooms". These rooms are usually found on the top floor with huge windows that stay
open around the clock (Flanagan 6). Andaverde's family filed a lawsuit against the University of
Idaho, SAE, and Tri Delta. In the end, the court dismissed the case due to a "summary judgement
because there was no dispute that Andaverde fell out of an open window," and they found no proof
of threatening circumstances in her presence (Flanagan 6). In other words, the court dismissed the
case before it even reached a full trial, concluding that Andaverde was aware of the open window
and that the university or fraternity did not have the responsibility to protect her from her own
behavior. Basically, the court claimed she initiated her own accident. How can a university or
fraternity blame a victim of permanent brain damage for their accident? Especially when the

Here at Bloomsburg we have fourteen fraternities and thirteen sororities. This semester I had the
gratification of joining the International fraternity Zeta Psi. Though I have been very incipient in my
life, it has become an astronomically immense part of my life here at Bloomsburg. Zeta Psi is our
only international fraternity on campus, which is what made it appeal to me over the other

Fraternities and Why They are Misunderstood Essay
Fraternities and Why They are Misunderstood
Fraternities have been a major part of student life at universities all over the world since the
beginning of the 20th century. For many students they have offered an improvement in social life,
more friends, opportunities for athletics, and a great sense of brotherhood. Unfortunately, since their
beginning fraternities have been questioned about their activities. Many people today think that they
subject their members to harmful acts better known as "hazing." Massachusetts General law defines
hazing as:

Fraternity issues like this one are very ugly and truly bring out the worst in everyone. I am
completely shocked that a lawyer would even take a case such as this one where a fraternity member
is obviously guilty. In another incident, university police have arrested three men on the charge of
battery. Two of the men alleged that they were hit on the buttocks 30 times with a 2–by–4, and
another student said he was hit approximately 10 times. The incident has raised numerous questions
about the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, according to campus officials. The event became public
knowledge when Edward Pratt, the dean of students spoke on the topic. Pratt summed the course of
events as "This incident is particularly bad because it is part of a secret organization"(Anderson).
Pratt describes the situation as "Underground organizations feel more immune to regular laws and
regulations and any kind of policing....They feel they can violate peoples rights"(Anderson). Pratt
says "many of the undergraduate pledges initially would not speak about any of the incidences,
because they were maintaining their code of secrecy"(Anderson). This code of honor is one of the
main obstacles that investigators have to overcome when trying to find the truth. What the school
and the investigators have to understand is that no fraternity member wants to be responsible for the
possible end of their organization. This act of treason

Membership In Fraternities And Sororities
The decrease in membership in fraternities and sororities has occurred due to negative
representation in media and criminal reputations. However, students should join fraternities and
sororities because together they can do work for charities, volunteer, and fundraise. Students should
also become members to be a part of a group life in which you are essentially guaranteed lifelong
friendships and a thriving social life. Although the monetary cost may be high and the superficial
representation in media makes fraternity and sorority members look daft and trouble–making, the
benefits to membership include helping out communities and being held responsible for your
academic and extracurricular activities. The words fraternity and sorority can define any group of
men and women that come together to form a club, but the words are well–known for college Greek
life organizations. Fraternities and sororities are known for their private imitations and rules, which
sometimes can only be learned about by becoming a part of the club. The College of William and

Argumentive Essay: Fraternities and Sorrorities
Against Fraternities/Sororities
As portrayed in the 1978 hit movie Animal House, college fraternities/sororities are a hotbed of
excessive drinking, casual sex, vandalism, and generally licentious behavior. But, in real life, unlike
the movie, the results of such conduct are hardly laughable. Even though the nationwide
membership in both fraternities and sororities are at an all time high of 350,000 members,
fraternities and sororities are still receiving harsh criticism from university leaders and civic
authorities. In the face of several recent incidents, fraternity and sorority behaviors can no longer be

Although not as dangerous as hazing, the problem of racism among fraternities and sororities are
also a growing problem. At the University of Southern California, in
Thomas 4

Jewish fraternity house. In another disgraceful episode, at Oklahoma State University, Sigma Alpha
Epsilon brothers were reprimanded after holding a "plantation party," during which several members
masqueraded as black slaves.(Inside Greek U: Fraternities, Sororities and the Pursuit of Pleasure,

(Laws). Have you ever wondered why they do not have hazing laws? No one truly knows why they
do not have the laws. As some people think, hazing is a great thing, and it puts people through a
great experience to go through. Since hazing can endanger the physical safety of a person, and
produces mental, physical discomfort, and causes dismay, humiliation, and dehumanizes an
individual, society needs to learn about hazing and stop it from happening. We know that people
consider it a tradition that has been going on for ages, but it's an appalling experience to go through.
Everywhere around the world hazing is happening and not one person can do a thing about it. The
earliest recorded event of hazing occurred in eighteen thirty–eight. The first recorded death
happened in eighteen forty–eight. (Hank). So you can see why some may consider it a tradition.
Many hazing incidents do not just involve members of a certain group, but sometimes it can also
include the coach or who is in charge of the group. Twenty–two percent of coaches or advisors are
involved in hazing towards the athlete or student. Many of the coaches and advisors even help

Should Fraternities And Sororities Be Banned?
The question about Greek life on campus is whether if fraternities and sororities should be banned.
The reasoning behind that is because of all the sexual assault, hazing, and binge drinking happening
on campus. All of those problems are causing people to be hurt, be raped, or be killed. But if you
look into it, Greek organization does have underage members. Colleges should not ban fraternities
and sororities. Greek organizations are still relevant on today's campus. Simon Riker, a freelance
musician said, "I learned a lot about myself and other people, more than I would have otherwise...
offered me a tremendous amount of opportunities and a vast social network" (Friedman 990). Many
fraternities are involved in their communities. The fraternity and sorority would hold a fundraiser
where they would raise more than $20 million for charity. Averagely most fraternities have a slightly
higher grade–point average from just the students who are not in a fraternity. The grade–point
average is approximately 2.912 (Friedman 990). Fraternity and sorority members is more likely to
be prepared after their graduation. The percent within the Greeks and the non–Greeks on how
prepared the students are after graduation is 37 percent Greek to 27 percent non–Greek (Friedman
990). Fraternities and sororities are seen as a way to further one's career after graduation (Friedman

How Fraternities and Sororities Impact Students (Or Do They?)
Drinking, academics, and social behavior under the microscope
Published on September 1, 2011 by Alan Reifman, Ph.D. in On the Campus
Right around now is the start of the academic year at American universities. Among the traditional
activities accompanying the start of school is fraternity/sorority rush, in which students who wish to
join a Greek–letter organization attend functions to learn about and select from the different houses
and the fraternities and sororities decide which students they would like to invite to become
members.

320). Robbins lists several additional problem areas, such as an atmosphere of conformity,
intolerance, and "constantly being judged;" a heavy reliance on men for social validation; and
enormous time and financial commitments. In some sororities, members are officially required to
attend a certain percentage of events and even when not technically required, many feel implicitly
that they should attend sorority activities over important outside functions.
For some people, memories from the Greek years appear to have a special significance, even
influencing behavior decades later. In his book, Beer and Circus about three A's of university life
(academics, athletics, and alcohol), Murray Sperber writes about fraternity alumni seeking a little
cross–generational bonding with current members through sharing memories of alcohol mayhem.
"The main storytellers are often alumni, and they frequently gather in their old fraternity houses to
narrate the tales and, on occasion, to try to relive them" (p. 152).
The overwhelming majority of academic research on Greek life appears to be on heavy drinking and
other substance use, with studies consistently showing that Greek–organization members drink more
heavily than matched non–members (here and here).

Should Colleges Ban Fraternities?
Fraternities are well–known for members claiming that within their time of membership they met
many people whom they still have regular contact with as alumni. Other times, a fraternity's wild
parties or even hazing cause them to be infamous. Ian Lovett, a reporter, interviewed various people
connected to Sigma Alpha Epsilon, including the president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Lovett reported
on Sigma Alpha Epsilon's decision to eliminate the tradition of pledging as part of their membership
initiation process (Lovett). Then within another article called, "Should Colleges Ban Fraternities,"

Possible solutions that may decrease, and eventually put a stop to hazing, include better education
about fraternity hazing, stricter laws to prevent hazing from occurring, and more intervention from
college administrators. Through this can Fraternities be restored to their intended purpose: providing
moral and social support for college students.
The lack of a common definition of hazing often deters an institution from moving toward an
enforceable policy prohibiting such conduct as hazing. An institutional policy should be developed
defining and prohibiting hazing that is sufficiently broad to prohibit behaviors and activities.
3. Hazing is a serious topic that most youths in today's generation face. Because it is a growing
problem, the public, both young and old, should be aware of what hazing actually is, be able to
recognize it, and how to prevent it. There are many different types of hazing and different areas
where they have occurred. This research paper examines different areas in which hazing is found. In
order to receive a sense of what people are experiencing, different cases will be presented to help
give the reader a little understanding of what has been happening everywhere. To begin, one must
realize that hazing is defined as ridiculing tasks a 'newcomer' is put through. These tasks could harm

  • 1. Fraternity Learning Communities Social Fraternities As Learning Communities D. Jose Duzan Grand Valley State University Social Fraternities As Learning Communities INTRODUCTION Greek–lettered organizations often carry a negative stigma, due largely to a growingly publicized minority of fraternities and sororities in the media. Similarly to ethnic groups that are marginalized in much the same way, these minorities have not represented the larger body as a whole, regardless of membership. However, in more recent history, the publicity of these minority members has aided in the cultivation of a such a negative reputation. The effect has led to a further decline in value systems that many of these organizations were initially intended to uphold. The impact this has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 2. Panhellenic Fraternities In The Greek System In today's society, going to college has become the norm. Freshly graduated students escape high school to become a freshman again. By August students start filing into packed cars to leave for college and try to find their place in this world. Out of the millions of students that attend each year, a percentage of them will rush a fraternity or sorority for the chance of sister or brotherhood. To some it is a sign of superior status, and others it not the right fit. Greek life is known from everything to volunteering for the community to the wild parties that somehow do not get busted by the cops every weekend. In the nation, Kimberly Brandy on Marie Claire states there are 5,975 fraternities governed by the North American Interfraternity Conference and 3,127 sororities governed by the National Panhellenic Conference. At Kansas State alone, about one in five students are a part of the greek community. K–State is also known for its diversity. We take pride in this fact here at Kansas State, but as a whole, the nation is having troubles combining these prides. It is in the combination of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the start of time, and even now, Greek life is white dominate. Since this is the case, it is fairly normal for Greek row houses are known as white sororities or white fraternities. The Greek system has been around for hundreds of years. So historically it makes sense that there would be segregation, because it was made in a time that owning a slave was a common occurrence. Today there are black pride groups and organizations, such as the Divine Nine. The Divine Nine is a set of nine fraternities and sororities, created in the early to mid 1900's, that are all black. Of these nine, Kansas State has seven. These organizations are meant to include the sisterhood and brotherhood that Greek life gives you while indulging in the pride of their ethnic ... • 4. The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities Essay The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities Joining fraternities and sororities has been a long tradition among many college and university students within the United States. As the number of students entering colleges and universities grow, the influence and pressure to join fraternities and sororities grow as well. According to a research project conducted by Dr. Gary D. Malaney, associate professor of education and director of student affairs at the University of Massachusetts, "58.6% [of 413 students surveyed] reported having at least a few friends who belong to the Greek Area" (Malaney 2). Among the many fraternities in the United States, some fraternities are said to accept students after "drinking a whole bottle of alcohol nonstop" (Brown). Flushing toilets after a current member takes a dump, not sleeping for two days, carrying bricks in backpacks for weeks, and sexual intercourse are some of the many shocking things new members will do to earn their way into a fraternity or sorority. According to Kevin Brown, "you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do to get in, and that could be anything." Some sororities "will paddle each other till their behinds are bleeding. They will force girls to do things like boob ranking, where they're given five minutes to examine each other's chests and rank themselves by size" (Morehouse) before getting accepted. Clearly, fraternities and sororities often do not respect the rights, opinions and well–being of their potential members. For many fraternities and sororities, academics are certainly not the key methods of attracting new members. Surprisingly, fraternities and sororities have quite an effect on student academic performances. According to Malaney's research, only 4% of all fraternity members surveyed said their academic performance improved while 26% claimed that their performance got worse (Malaney 3). Among the sorority members surveyed, 6% said their academic performance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Despite the negative stigma against fraternities, the majority of the society will never truly know how fraternities teach individuals to appreciate hard work, support and help each other, and develop social organizational, and study skills. • 6. Fraternity And Sorority College students have many life altering questions they must answer through the journey of further education. From a student's major, living circumstance, classes, and getting involved on campus, it can start to get stressful if there are mixed signals about what they are getting into. Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet people and improve skills needed after graduation. A student might choose to be involved in Greek life because of the parties, friends, and job application quirks down the road (Joining a Fraternity, np). The outcome involves those things, but it also involves leadership traits, lifelong relationships, the ability to surpass the negative public perception of Fraternity and Sorority men and women, and keep up good grades. If a student's GPA drops under a certain score, then they have to have a certain amount of study hours or note checks until their grade goes back up. If their GPA is so low for a long amount of time they might get kicked out of the fraternity or sorority. Students knowing that they have to keep their grades up for a fraternity or sorority could help them graduate. "A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non–fraternity/sorority persons graduate" (Fraternity and Sorority Facts, np). • 9. Colleges Should Dispose Of Fraternities Many Americans believe that fraternities embody the college experience and that they are essential for every student. Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. Fraternities can actually encourage exclusivity and discriminatory behavior. They also serve no purpose that other organizations do not already offer. Therefore, colleges should dispose of fraternities. Fraternities encourage exclusivity and discrimination, so they must be banned. As Stephanie Saul states in her New York Times article, "Harvard Restrictions Could Reshape Exclusive Student Clubs," fraternities can "foster an atmosphere of misogyny, sexual misconduct, and entitlement" which led to the restrictions enacted by Harvard University and other colleges across the ... • 10. The Fraternity Of The Brotherhood Jesse joined Alpha Phi Alpha in order to bond with like–minded individuals. Alpha Phi Alpha was the first Black Greek–letter intercollegiate fraternity in the United States founded on Cornell 's campus in 1906 initially created as a Black men 's literary and support group. The purpose of the organization is to foster strong bonds between men of African descent who faced racial prejudice. The organization combines social purpose with social action. Jesse wanted to be part of the brotherhood: I just had more relationships with African Americans at Cornell than I did with majority students...As far as my pledge interest, and subsequently being initiated by Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, a couple of my close friends were in the frat. They spoke good things of it, and I thought that it would be nice to join and be part of the brotherhood that was for us. Harriet found solace in pledging Delta Sigma Theta, a Black Greek–letter sorority dedicated to public service, which was founded in 1913. One of her really good friends, who was a Black Cuban, decided to pledge with her. She also sang in Pamoja–Ni Gospel choir. Harriet talks about the importance of community in an isolated environment: I think that Blacks who wind up going to Cornell, in part because we have this shared experience of being in an isolated environment. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity "We must never lose sight of the fact that we must take part in the development, not only ourselves but of all humanity."–Jewel Charles Henry Chapman I absolutely believe that my tenacity and commitment to do research about the fraternity gave me a better understanding of what it means to be a man of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. While doing extensive enquiry about the fraternity I sprawled across all of the amazing leaders that have been granted access into Alpha Land. Depending where someone is from, and what they were brought up to believe, defines what the term "masculinity" entails. Different Social institutions all over the United States, such as the military, sports, clubs, and fraternities, have been constructing their interpretation of masculinity. One major social institution that is active in thousands of Universities across the United States is campus fraternities. Campus fraternities create their own sense of masculinity by generating certain requirements and characteristics a man must hold in order to represent them as a part of their fraternity. So what allows a campus fraternity to fall under the category of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most fraternities have a house where usually about 20–30 from the fraternity live, depending on the size of the house. They hold weekly meetings that everybody is expected to attend and many of the fraternities have traditions that they have been following for decades. From listing all these traditions it is already easy to acknowledge how fraternities definitely fall under the category of a social institution. So the question is how masculinity defined culturally in a fraternity and how does it create its own sense of masculinity? In order for someone to join a fraternity they must go through a process of meetings, parties, interviews, before they are given a bid for the fraternity. Even after that they are not officially a part of the organization. They have to go through a semester of 'pledging', which can sometimes be a grueling process, until they are formally part of the fraternity. Fraternities need to time to figure out who really fits in best with their image and helps give the frat a good name. The process of entering a fraternities begins, usually happens with in the first couple of weeks at school. All different fraternities set up tents, wearing t–shirts or tanks with their Greek letters and try to 'sell' their fraternity to the public. The first Greek letter organization was created in 1776 as a way for students to meet with each other and discuss current events and literature. From there on, more of these groups were started at schools around the country. It was rare to have women be appointed into one of these because of their lesser social status. • 18. Should College Students Join Fraternities Or Fraternity Being a sister or brother of a greek house comes with great responsibilities. Being a part of a sorority or fraternity consumes students time with events and parties, which prevents them from having enough time to complete their school work. Attendance is required despite having academic responsibilities. Many sororities and fraternities make it mandatory to attend most of the greek events that will go on throughout the school year. In the article Should College Students Join Fraternities or Sororities, Schwarz explains that fraternities and sororities, "absorb time that could be better spent on academic work and extracurricular activities". For many students, college life will be challenging at first, having to deal with all the work, and keeping up with classes that might be very rigorous depending on the major they decide to pursue. Joining a sorority or fraternity will take up most of the time that could be spent getting work done, with social gatherings, parties, or just hanging out with other members of the same house. In an article by Megan Tackett, a former sorority member gives her experience on her greek life, she write about how she spent, "10–15 hours a week dedicated to the sorority". This shows that a lot of time goes into being a member of the greek society, although there are only about 168 hours in a week, by subtract the hours spent sleeping, plus the hours spent working, if the students have a job or are planning to do work study, and the time ... For majority of people, the word is has negative connotations. These well–known stereotypes are depicted very well by the Delta Tau Chi house from the movie Animal House. The Deltas are notoriously known for being obnoxious and rowdy (Animal House, 1978). Movies such as Animal House and many others like it are what lead people to fully believe these stereotypes. According to Brett Wells, most non Greek students react very negatively toward fraternities, while Greek students generally react positively. Wells says, "Although it is not surprising that members of fraternities and sororities see their groups in a positive light, what is more interesting is that independent students harbor negative, rather than neutral, attitudes towards Greek groups" (Wells, September 2008). To many people's surprise, these stereotypes are not the main purpose of fraternities. Although many movies depict these fraternity men as drunken, careless, and disrespectful boys, most fraternal organizations value academics, philanthropy, and brotherhood. A common stereotype is fraternity membership being associated with disrespect toward women and sexual assault. Animal House is an iconic example of fraternity men stereotypes (Animal House, 1978). Because fraternities tend to get off with little punishment, it shows that the behavior is okay. Therefore, the number of injuries/deaths, assault, and rape continue to grow. For instance, a 19 year old sophomore, Amanda Andaverde, spent her first and only month at the University of Idaho. A member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, she spent a weekday with her sisters at Sigma Chi. Getting bored of continuous "drinking games" and forced flirting with an "assigned date," Amanda left to go to another fraternity, Sigma Alpha. Drinking, academics, and social behavior under the microscope Published on September 1, 2011 by Alan Reifman, Ph.D. in On the Campus Right around now is the start of the academic year at American universities. Among the traditional activities accompanying the start of school is fraternity/sorority rush, in which students who wish to join a Greek–letter organization attend functions to learn about and select from the different houses and the fraternities and sororities decide which students they would like to invite to become members. Exact figures for the number of college students nationally involved in these organizations are hard to pin down. However, from perusing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 320). Robbins lists several additional problem areas, such as an atmosphere of conformity, intolerance, and "constantly being judged;" a heavy reliance on men for social validation; and enormous time and financial commitments. In some sororities, members are officially required to attend a certain percentage of events and even when not technically required, many feel implicitly that they should attend sorority activities over important outside functions. For some people, memories from the Greek years appear to have a special significance, even influencing behavior decades later. In his book, Beer and Circus about three A's of university life (academics, athletics, and alcohol), Murray Sperber writes about fraternity alumni seeking a little cross–generational bonding with current members through sharing memories of alcohol mayhem. "The main storytellers are often alumni, and they frequently gather in their old fraternity houses to narrate the tales and, on occasion, to try to relive them" (p. 152). The overwhelming majority of academic research on Greek life appears to be on heavy drinking and other substance use, with studies consistently showing that Greek–organization members drink more heavily than matched non–members (here and here). ... • 39. Should Colleges Ban Fraternities? Fraternities are well–known for members claiming that within their time of membership they met many people whom they still have regular contact with as alumni. Other times, a fraternity's wild parties or even hazing cause them to be infamous. Ian Lovett, a reporter, interviewed various people connected to Sigma Alpha Epsilon, including the president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Lovett reported on Sigma Alpha Epsilon's decision to eliminate the tradition of pledging as part of their membership initiation process (Lovett). Then within another article called, "Should Colleges Ban Fraternities," written by Katherine Schulten, the author raises the question of whether fraternities should be banned or not. Fraternities are groups of college students that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Colleges and students should not afraid that this will impair their opportunities to make new meaningful bonds because so many different alternatives are available. It is important to realize that well–being of students is more important than keeping fraternities and sororities on college campuses when they are proven to be correlated with negative aspects. Creating a community should not come at the expense of the safety of students. Under the current circumstances of college fraternities and given these points banning fraternities is necessary in order to protect students from dangerous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hazing (subjecting newcomers to abusive or humiliating tricks and ridicule) has always been seen as a secretive campus activity when it comes to fraternities and pledging. As a result, Dr. Mark Taff resorted in his article that, "..a series of 168 cases of injuries and deaths related to fraternity hazing activities...[occurred] in the United States between 1923 and 1982" (2113). Young college men are being hospitalized and even worse, dying, just for a couple of friends that give them a sense of belonging. The major causes of hazing are the students' wanting a ... Possible solutions that may decrease, and eventually put a stop to hazing, include better education about fraternity hazing, stricter laws to prevent hazing from occurring, and more intervention from college administrators. Through this can Fraternities be restored to their intended purpose: providing moral and social support for college students. The lack of a common definition of hazing often deters an institution from moving toward an enforceable policy prohibiting such conduct as hazing. An institutional policy should be developed defining and prohibiting hazing that is sufficiently broad to prohibit behaviors and activities. 3. Hazing is a serious topic that most youths in today's generation face. Because it is a growing problem, the public, both young and old, should be aware of what hazing actually is, be able to recognize it, and how to prevent it. There are many different types of hazing and different areas where they have occurred. This research paper examines different areas in which hazing is found. In order to receive a sense of what people are experiencing, different cases will be presented to help give the reader a little understanding of what has been happening everywhere. To begin, one must realize that hazing is defined as ridiculing tasks a 'newcomer' is put through. These tasks could harm the person being initiated either physically or psychologically (Hazing, 2007). "The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
