John Knowles A Separate Peace
A Separate Peace Final Paper The setting of A Separate Peace by John Knowles plays a large role in
the plot of the story. The most important parts of the novel take place at the Devon School. Another
thing that makes Devon so important is that it s where the main characters live. As I mentioned before,
Devon is where most of the important parts of the novel take place and it s where the main characters
live, that is why Devon is so significant. The time period was also very important; the novel takes
place during World War II and Devon is a school where boys are trained to be soldiers. The war is
used as a symbol; it represents depression, anger, and the end of childhood. The Devon School can
change based on the season. During the summer session, Devon is a peaceful place and shows the
innocence of childhood and friendship. When the winter session arrives the peaceful atmosphere
disappears and the school becomes gloomy, tense, and a more hostile place as the boys grow up. ...

He attended the Phillips Exeter Academy and based Devon and the events in the story around his
experiences( John Knowles ). Instead of trying to come up with a story that he couldn t relate to, he
based it around a real life experience which made the novel more realistic. The more realistic he could
make the story, the more people would like it because then the readers could feel like these characters
are real and could relate to them. He combined a real experience with the first person point of view
making it seem like it could have all happened, he could have cause his best friend to fall out of a tree,
a friend could have enlisted and later gone insane, but Knowles claims that he never experienced the
negative part of his

Goneril And Graglear
Shakespeare s play, King Lear, tells the tragic tale of a king who has been driven mad. Goneril and
Regan are portrayed as the main villains of the story who get into a power struggle with their father
and are held responsible for the downfall of the King. However, when further inspecting the
psychological complexity of each character we can see that the true downfall of King Lear was the
absent role of a mother. Goneril, Regan, and King Lear are proven incapable of holding any type of
functional relationship. The reason for this is that each of these characters feels the need to be in
control. Goneril and Regan are influenced in every action by their desire to be in power. They
destroyed their father and each other in the fight for control. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When he asks for her to proclaim her love to him she simply answers, Unhappy that I am, I cannot
heave my heart into my mouth. I love your Majesty. (1.1 1145). King Lear acted out maliciously
because he did not have control of the situation so he banished the one daughter who would have truly
loved him. When King Lear gives his kingdom to Goneril and Regan, it is the first instance of King
Lear giving up some of his control, but also the first instance in his decline to insanity. King Lear soon
loses all control when Goneril and Regan refuse to let him stay with them. I gave you all... (2.4 170)
Lear says to both Regan and himself when he realizes he has nothing left. Not only does King Lear
lose control of his kingdom and his daughters, but also his emotions, You see me here, you gods, a
poor old man s full of grief as age, wretched in both. If it be you that stir these daughters hearts against
their father, fool me not so much to bear it tamely. Touch me with noble anger. And let not women s
weapons, water drops, tain my man s cheeks! No, you unnatural hags. (2.4 1179). In this quote, King
Lear is beginning to act truly hysterical, and he compares his uncontrollable emotions to the emotions
of a woman. In this scene, we begin to see the release of King Lear s feminine counterpart through the
power of the

Nonhuman Primate Communication That Humans Learn Their...
One form of nonhuman primate communication that occurs in the wild is through noises (Zuberbuhler
6). Most primates have species specific sounds for certain situations (Zuberbuhler 6). For example,
vervet monkeys have different alarm calls for different types of predators (Zuberbuhler 10). The
listeners of these calls respond to each call differently, protecting themselves from specific predators
(Zuberbuhler 10). This means that they are not just reacting to another monkey being scared, but they
know what scared it based on the call the monkey makes. Specific calls therefore can be said to
symbolize specific meanings (Zuberbuhler 10). However, it is not known whether or not this is
intentional or if the monkeys are aware of this. While this would not necessarily be considered a
language, it is one of their natural forms of communication. The human listeners and nonhuman
listeners both interpret arbitrary noises to mean something specific (Zuberbuhler 11). However, a
difference between human language and these primate calls is that humans learn their language
socially (Zuberbuhler 11). There is no evidence to say that nonhuman primate calls or sounds are
learned socially instead of instinctual (Zuberbuhler 11). In fact, there is some evidence to support the
opposite. Monkeys reared in social isolation produce basically all their species typical call types from
soon after birth (Arbib 1054). This means that these species specific calls are not taught, but they
know them

Analysis Of A Long Walk To Water
The lost boys. That was what they were being called in America the boys who had lost their homes
and families because of the war and had wandered, lost, for weeks or months at a time before reaching
the refugee camps (91). Linda Sue Park wrote a novel based on one of these boys called A long walk
to water. Salva Dut was a boy alone in Sudan and becomes a survivor by also becoming a leader,
adapting to situations, and overcoming dangerous obstacles. Salva was a lost boy in a big world that
had many problems, but he overcomes them by helping others as a leader (91). Salva s uncle was the
leader of the group he was staying in and he shared all the food he got to the group, but it seemed they
had all forgotten that, for now Salva now had to beg for scraps, which were given grudgingly (67).
Salva was alone now because his uncle was killed in the war, so after he died, the group did not treat
him with the same respect that Salva had to his uncle. Much later, after Salva became alone again and
was left to fend for himself, Salva had become the leader of a group of about fifteen hundred boys
(80). After Salva got older the group looked to him to lead them to the new refugee camps because the
camps in Sudan were closing. As Salva became the leader of the boys he didn t just walk with them,
he helped them personally Salva would talk to them, encourage them, coax and persuade them (81).
Salva was a true leader because he actually helped the group like his uncle by talking to them, sharing
with them, and showing them the way to get what they need, he also showed them how to adapt to
situations. Salva was one of the many who faced multiple situations in America and to overcome them
he adapted to them. Salva was in so many camps that he heard the aid workers talk and get a little
english down but after so many years in the camps, Salva could understand a little english (86).
Michael was an Irish aid worker that helped Salva a little english and teach him some letters to
memorize. Salva had gone to America because he was chosen to go now Salva s arms were piled with
new clothes. Underwear, socks, sneakers. A pair of long pants. A t shirt and a long sleeved shirt to
wear on top of it (92). Salva got into America

Reflection Paper On Moral Disengagement
Introduction
We live in a society in which unethical actions are always justified as moral because the majority are
involved in the deeds. We always face an ethical dilemma in different situations, and it becomes
difficult to make a rational decision. This reflection paper aims at exploring the issue of moral
disengagement. Reasons for moral disengagement will be discussed.
What?
From the reading, I understand that people think and act differently when faced with ethical issues.
For one to make a rational decision, an extensive process of judgment is required (Bandura, Caprara,
Zsolnai, 2000). For an individual to be responsible, he or she should put into consideration the
magnitude of the consequences of the actions, social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Justification of a wrong action would be a moral disengagement. Unethical actions always cause
severe consequences to society. Currently, there are cases of cheating and secret use of unwanted
written materials during exam times. They portray unpreparedness and laziness on the part of a
student. It is unethical since it does not show faithfulness and integrity in studies. Teaching from this
material helps me to be dependable and not to be morally disengaged because of diffusion of
responsibility. Unethical conduct can be attributed to the behavior of a particular group. The teaching
is important to me because I have learned on how to be responsible for my actions and to act ethically
even at a student level. The practice of morals at a young age will help me to remain ethical even at
old age.
Lastly, there are emerging issues observed in the media which involve people displaying their
nakedness to the public. Such deeds demonstrate lack of self respect, and there is no particular
individual to blame since it was one provoked by only one victim and other people followed. Reading
from the material provided concerns me that I should practice personal values and ethics and
emphasize on self respect and individual principles. It is important to me that I have learned to respect
myself and not to be controlled by habits.
Now What?
This learning has changed my

Probability Of A Sequence Of Rational Numbers
Abstract Bernoulli numbers evaluate the probability of a sequence of rational numbers. They re found
commonly within many types of mathematics: Number Theory, Euler Maclaurin summation, and
power series are some exampled. Once Bernoulli s ideas were published, it gave flight to many
mathematicians in the field of probability. You can consider Jakob Bernoulli as the founding father of
probability. What can become of me if I fail this class? Or what will become of me if I have to drop
the course. Do you have utile scanner. Introduction The Bernoulli family is the most prominent family
in the mathematical world; the name Bernoulli belonged to six mathematicians at the end of the 17th
and the beginning of the 18th centuries. Bernoulli numbers first appeared in 1713 in Ars Conjectandi
[page 97] written by Jakob Bernoulli(1654 1705). With the publication of Ars Conjectandi, the
development of probability was brought about; it is considered the founding idea of probability.
Bernoulli worked for many years on his book, although his work was incomplete it made headway
once it was published regarding the use of rational numbers in a sequence regarding trigonometry
functions. Bernoulli contracted tuberculosis and passed away before he was able to complete the book,
family members published his work several years after his death. Ars Conjectandi consisted mainly of
material regarding probability theory and expected values. The art of conjectandi (in English
translation) was meant

TECHNOLOGY FRIEND OR FOE?
Until recently, I had always accepted technology as a wonderful friend, but after doing some in depth
reading and research on the topic I found that technology also has its draw backs. Through research I
found that technology has been nothing more than a journey of trial and error. In my research I
discovered what I choose to call the dark side of technology. Everyday household conveniences,
transportation, and modern medicine are all products of technology that are an integral part of our
society. More often than not these products and services are viewed as assets or friends of our society
.and the draw backs are often overlooked And why not ? We are a Convenience oriented society, ...

Persuasive Essay On Losing Weight
According to the Center for Disease Control over 70% of adults over the age of 20 are overweight,
and 38% of the population are classified as obese (cdc.gov). Every day we are sold by the idea of The
magical cure all , some supplement or diet that will somehow fix every issue for you. The idea that we
can literally change nothing about our lives and drop weight is seductive and tempting, but ultimately
it s utterly false. At its most basic level, losing weight is a math issue and nothing more. There is no
magical pill or supplement that will somehow make you burn all the extra calories you re intaking
everyday. So, with that said we are left with one of two options; diet, or change your lifestyle. Dieting
is defined as restricting oneself to small amounts or special kind of food in order to lose weight.
Instantly with that definition you receive such a negative connotation to the idea of fat loss. The idea
that a person has to Restrict themselves is almost offensive to the average adult, it simply implies that
they have this supreme lack of willpower and have to force themselves into an uncomfortable
position. In 2012 twenty billion dollars was spent in the weight loss industry, the average American
will attempt to lose weight five times before any meaningful results (The weight loss industry by the
numbers). Even when the diet is successful the average person on a diet will have recovered all their
weight lost plus an additional few pounds six months after (Long term

The Is Not Our Type
On Monday, September 14, my partner and I set out to find someone that was Not our Type . When I
first heard about the assignment I was extremely nervous for what would lie ahead. I m not a very
talkative person and hardly ever just have random conversations with people that I don t know. I knew
that this assignment would certainly get me out of my comfort zone, and cause me to really branch
out. A huge part of talking to others about Christ is to just start up a simple conversation to work off
of. It can become even more difficult when someone has a different background or separate moral
values. I was by no means looking forward to the awkwardness that would possibly lie ahead, we
decided that the best place to start would be Walmart since people are there 24/7. We walked in at
around 9 p.m. and started our search. After about 20 minutes we finally decided to make our move on
someone. We walked up to a young man that looked to be in high school and began our conversation.
We started off by just introducing ourselves and telling him that we were working on an assignment
and just wanted to get to know him a little bit better. The conversation actually flowed really well and
we had a lot in common like our love for sports and technology. His name is Dilan Patel and he s a
junior at Siloam High. You can probably tell by the last name that Dilan is Indian. I knew going into
the conversation that he would be very different from us morally, ethnically, and even physically.

Reflection On System Analysis And Design

design and explained me clearly about this course then this course made me realise that I have a lot to
learn and found it as very interesting and challenging. As it is my second semester this course is best
till now, the main reason I have selected this course is my tutor Dr. Anne kohnke, the way she teaches
the class is impressive and definitely very kind heartened woman. Also in the first semester she taught
us Enterprise Information Technology the framework made to work efficiently by giving good
knowledge in that course. Here I want to discuss what is System analysis and design, when and where
the concepts are used and how to overcome the problems using these concepts. The methodology of
using characterizing the parts, structural engineering, interfaces and information for a framework to

Overwhelmingly dependent on the trade and spices exotic goods from the east, the republic required a

The Cafe Window
In the early evening back at home Consuelo was still pacing in front of the café window. Concerned
for the safety of her only son, who had departed this morning wearing his sleepwear and robe. Her jaw
fell open when on the sidewalk before her appeared Stella and Sol, with much audacity. Carrying up
the path garment bags from a high end department store. Behind them was Dr. Edwards who had just

He greeted her with a big, juicy, wet, kiss, then they all just walked right in.
Consuelo, who was still owning her tantrum, was offended by their smiles and casual stances. Not
wanting to believe what she was seeing when she questioned, Are those really garment bags you

Why School Should Start Later Essay
Mesut Barazany once said, Your future depends on our dreams, So go to bed . Sleep is vital for your
body, to properly function the next day your body needs rest. When students have to wake up at six in
the morning to get ready for school, they are often tired throughout the day. School hours need to be
changed to a later time in the day. First, students sometimes get overloaded with homework and may
not be able to go to bed until late at night. Also, they may not get the amount of sleep they need which
is not healthy. Lastly, they are usually not as focused while they are in class, sometimes even falling
asleep during a lesson. Homework in general can be difficult for a student, but when they get multiple
assignments from more than one class, it can be overwhelming. Homework alone can take hours on
end to finish without adding after school activities like sports or business at home. Studying for exams

A Mapmaker s Dream By James Cowan
A Mapmaker s Dream, by James Cowan, is about Fra Mauro, a monk who lived in medieval times
pursuing to make a perfect map of the world, without traveling outside the monastery he resided in.
Because he is a monk, Mauro had to stay in his monastery for religious reasons, as he would upset god
if he did. Travelers came and visited Mauro to tell their stories of adventures, which Mauro keeps into
account. In this book, map making comes up a lot, as well as monastic education and Mauro s
acquisition of knowledge of his map. This book accurately portrays Fra Mauro s map making making

Fra Mauro does not want to travel, for fear that he would upset God. Similarly, in the book A Life for

Comprehensive Sexual Education or Bust
In the united states, there are two schools of thought when it comes to educating students on human
sexuality. Sexual education is a broad term that applies to the teaching to information from basic
contraceptive use, biological reproduction, the spread of infectious disease, and sexuality. One type of
sexual education is referred to as Comprehensive Sexual Education. Comprehensive Sexual Education
is curriculum rooted in health and life skills, that strives to teach students medically accurate
information on healthy relationships, development, side effects and benefits of birth control methods,

Consent is not the only lacking aspect in Sex Education throughout the country, a lot of important
ideas and information is debated and left out of the classroom due to fears of stepping on toes, or
touching on age old ideas about sex and religion. Over the years many have argued that parents
personal liberties must be protected when it comes to educating their children. In most states these
liberties are presented in a manor that allows for the religious opposition to sexual education. Robert
P. George and Melissa Moschella, academics from Princeton recently published an article titled Does
Sex Ed Undermine Parental Rights? in the New York Times, about the idea that Sexual Education
does in fact violate parental rights and liberties. Here, in a selection from the piece, even the secular
side of the argument against Sex Ed in the classroom is visible, True, the state needs to protect
children from abuse and neglect. It is also true that the state has a legitimate interest in reducing
teenage pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. But it is not abuse or neglect to
protect the innocence of preteenage children or to teach one s children more conservative, as opposed
to more liberal, moral values. Nor is it wrong or unreasonable to limit the state s control over what one
s children learn and think about sensitive issues of morality...Turning a classroom into a mandatory

bright, especially when the company can set it up so that it has to deal with a limited index of words.
Tellme isn t alone in supplying speech understanding technology, but it s leading the pack and
promises to get even better in the near future.
What about speech understanding software on a personal level? Many feel there is no potential and it
doesn t work well. This is not true at all, if used properly the speech understanding software does an
excellent job at allowing the user to speak while the program writes it down.
In the past the best speech understanding products were designed and sold by Dragon Systems. The
earlier programs weren t great, but they were good enough to start with. Later Dragon sold itself to
their competition, Lernout and Hauspie. Lernout and Hauspie s products were good, but when they
started plugging in some of the Dragon technology into the their own products, they got even better.

The Great Playwright s Life Story
Before the relatively short life of Lorraine Hansberry tragically ended, the African American
playwright distinguished herself in American theatre and literature as she creatively and unknowingly
challenged the views of African American life, among other inescapable issues of the nation and the
world, on the theatrical stage. The great playwright s life story began on May 19, 1930. Although born
during a time of hardship introduced by the Great Depression, Hansberry grew up rather comfortably
in a middle class African American family from the Southside of Chicago ( Lorraine ). Her father, Carl
Augustus Hansberry, not only established Lake Street Bank, one of the first Chicago banks to solicit
black patronage, but also established himself as a successful real estate businessman (Jacobus,
Lorraine 1223). Despite the middle class status, the family experienced racial tension, especially when
the family bought and moved into a home in a racially restricted covenant which later resulted in the
Hansberry vs. Lee U.S. Supreme Court case that influenced Hansberry s writing ( Lorraine ). After
graduating Englewood High School in Chicago in 1948, Lorraine Hansberry left for college to pursue
her interest in visual art ( Lorraine ). She attended the University of Wisconsin, the Art Institute of
Chicago, and numerous other schools before moving to New York in 1950 (Jacobus, Lorraine 1223).
Once in New York, Hansberry ditched visual art and found interest in theatre, which led her

Comparing The Glass Menagerie And August Osage County
In literature, there are many similarities as well as differences between characters of different works.
Even though two characters may have similar roles in their families and/or society itself, they can also
be at the same time polar opposites. One example of this is the mother, Amanda Wingfield in The
Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams and Violet Weston in August Osage County by Tracy Letts.
Both characters, Amanda and Violet are the matriarchs of their families. Both mothers experience in a
similar way, the tragic loss of their husbands. Amanda and Violet both experience the loss of their
husbands. In August Osage County, Violet explains to her daughter, Beverly killed himself...When
nothing is left, when everything is gone, disappeared, I ll Be here, (3.2.100 101). This shows how
Violet was feeling abandoned and lonely, because her husband, who was found dead would never
come home to her again. She felt as though losing her husband was in a way, her losing everything.
This quote also gives the audience the sense of emptiness that Violet was feeling after it was
discovered that her husband really was dead. She was feeling that with him gone, now that she knew
for sure he had died and wasn t still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Amanda appears to be extremely forward. She is open to the point where she makes herself seem as if
she is trying to show off in front of the family s dinner guest. In scene six Amanda exclaims, ... Good
gracious! Why don t you bring this paragon to supper?...I don t know why my son is so standoffish
that s not Southern behavior! (6.63. Amanda). This is a prime example of how Amanda seems to
become awkward when it comes to being in the presence of others. She also seems to speak without
filtering her thoughts and thinking about the possible consequences for the things that she

Why Was The Apothecary So Important
A blacksmith was a man who had a very important job. He had to make sure his colony had tools and
supplies for their jobs or living. You may wonder why he was called the blacksmith. It was because
when iron was useable, it was black. They also smited iron, so that is where they got smith from.
Daily Life The blacksmiths were busy in their shops working from dawn to dusk and six days a week.
Sometimes, instead of being paid by money, they bartered their services for goods and food. But, they
mostly spent their days by the burning hearth smelting, bending, turning and smiting iron. Their work

Why Was The Tanner So Important? The tanner may have had a disgusting job, but he was extremely
important. Everyone in the colonial times used leather everyday. Leather made everyone s boots, coats
and clothes. The tanner was pretty much the source of all that. If there was no tanner, clothes would be
a rare item to get (that would be odd)! So even though most of you may be disgusted, we should be
grateful. The Apothecary The apothecary was pretty much a colonial day pharmacist/doctor. The name
apothecary was a historical name for medical professional. Though, they were not very professional.
Most of the time, they just guessed when making medicines or coming up with cures and diseases.
Daily Life The apothecary was busy caring for people by prescribing them medicine, performing
surgery and drawing blood to try and get rid of diseases. The would make medicines out of herbs, and
grind them with a mortar and pestle. The apothecary usually woke up early and got dressed. They
would open their shop and clean a bit. They would either go to people s homes to help them or they
would stay at the shop. Tools an Apothecary

Comparison of Miracle on St. David s Day by Gillian...
Comparison of Miracle on St. David s Day by Gillian Clarke and Daffodils by William Wordsworth
Daffodils was written by William Wordsworth approximately a century before Miracle on St. David s
Day was written by Gillian Clarke. Due to this, the poems differ greatly in their style and language.
Observing the poems at first glance, it is obvious that they also contrast in content, however at greater
depth, the connections between them are made obvious. In this essay, I will be discussing the
connections and differences between the two poems. The daffodil is the national symbol of Wales; it
represents hope, joy and celebration. Both of the poets make this markedly palpable using this as a
theme for their poems. In Miracle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poems are both set in the springtime because they describe the daffodils (which only come out in
spring). Spring is known as a time of new beginnings and re birth. This is used effectively in context
with Miracle on St. David s Day , as there is a new beginning for the man who speaks for the first time
in forty years, having awakened something inside himself that he thought was gone. In Daffodils ,
from time to time Wordsworth reawakens his memory of the daffodils when he is feeling down, and
this memory in turn reawakens the joy that he had felt. In both poems spring is a suitable setting
instead of winter or autumn, which generally represent despair and gloom. Both poems, in their
description of the daffodils use a hyperbole of the number of daffodils. Miracle on St. David s Day
describes: Outside the daffodils a thousand, ten thousand and Daffodils describes: never ending line
ten thousand saw I at a glance . However, the poems differ in their visual depiction of the daffodils.
Miracle on St. David s Day describes them as yellow still as wax creams and yellows still flowers
silence the daffodils are flame . Wordsworth describes them as golden fluttering dancing They contrast
in that Clarke describes them almost as a picture, a flash image of Wordsworth s memory. The

The Sacred Ritual Of Marriage
Rituals can be described as an outward expression of inward intention (Rituals, Rites and Festivals,
n.d.). Rituals have a prominent role in today s society as they enable people of all religions to
communicate and form a stronger connection with their God or Gods (Rituals, Rites and Festivals,
n.d.). Over the years rituals have evolved because society s values have changed and modern culture
has had an influence on them. The sacred ritual of marriage in Catholic Christianity and Hinduism,
while superficially different, are essentially the same. This is particularly evident when analysing
similarities and differences in each faith s perception of the purpose of marriage, the structure of the
two wedding ceremonies, the symbols involved in the two ceremonies, and the role of family in the
Catholic and Hindu wedding ceremony.
An area of similarity within Catholic weddings and Hindu weddings is the purpose of marriage. Both
Catholicism and Hinduism represent the purpose of marriage through their sacred texts and traditional
ideas. In Catholicism the sacrament of Marriage is represented as a sacred bond between a man and a
woman that pledges them to be faithful lifelong spouses, loving and caring for each other and lovingly
raising and guiding the children they bring into the world (Stoutzenberger, 2000). The emphasis that is
placed on having children is seen in the Bible when God says to Adam and Eve, Be fruitful and
multiply and fill the earth (Genesis 1:28). Similarly the

Civil Liberties And Airport Security
Are the civil liberties of the citizens of the United States sacrificed during the airport security checks
with the use of body scanners for the sake of national security? This week thousands of Americans
will board airplanes to head to their Thanksgiving destinations, and they will need to undergo several
security checks in order to advance to their flight. Since September 11, 2001, the vulnerability and
fear arose in the United States citizens about the security tactics in place to protect our nation. One
area of concern was the airport security measures that allowed al Qaeda and their associates to take
control of United State s airplanes to carry out their plan of attack. The fear of another terrorist attack
taking place on the airplanes resulted in extraordinary security tactics immediately emerging to protect
the citizens. Further instances of other threats required more advanced security equipment to be
installed, such as the body scanners. Statistics revealed there were an estimated 793 scanners (full
body scanners) in use in March 2016 in more than 157 airports in the United States (Jansen). All of
these security measures have taken place with the expense of sacrificing civil liberties. Although, the
body scanners were developed to protect the people, the civil liberties of the United States citizens are
sacrificed for the sake of national security through invasion of privacy, inefficiencies, misuse, and
expense.

Goodwill Impairment Report
Amortization Versus Impairment of Goodwill: Impact on Accounting Quality, Financial Statements
Economic Value, Investors, and Auditors Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) replaced all U.S.
financial accounting standards in July 2009. Consequently, ASC 350, Intangibles Goodwill and Other,
replaced SFAS 142, Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets in September 2011. Under ASC 350,
goodwill must be periodically tested for impairment. Goodwill impairment is determined through the
standard detailing a two step process. However, in January 2014, ASC 350 was updated by authorizing
an alternative method of accounting for goodwill servicing private companies that could consequently

The research specifically examined firms when SFAS 142 (today ASC 350) required companies to
conduct goodwill impairment testing. Goodwill impairment testing detailed under the U.S. FASB and
international IASB revealed that goodwill impairment testing under both bodies can illustrate firms
economic conductions and that managers are precise in working to decrease costs associated with
contracting (Godfrey and Koh 117). The authors further explain that their findings are in support of
those who believe that the phenomenon of goodwill impairment testing required through the
introduction of SFAS 142 (now ASC 350) are a means of providing information relevant to users of
financial statements. These findings are supplemented by evidence that the amount of goodwill
written off is associated with firm size and leverage (Godfrey and Koh 138). Consequently, this could
be linked to the study concluding that investors view recognition of goodwill impairment as a
indicator of decreased financial health for a firm and consequently, greater risk as an investment.
Therefore, these companies underperformed when they publicly announced their respective
recognition of goodwill impairment. This study illustrates how the goodwill testing system under the
FASB and IASB provides useful information to investors promoting intelligent investing decisions

Offshore Oil Drilling On The Environment
Offshore Oil Drilling If we do nothing, it doesn t matter how we feel. And that s exactly what oil
companies are banking on: out of sight, out of mind (Hart, 24). Petroleum is a naturally occurring oil
found under deep layers of rock ( oil drilling ). Oil drilling is when a pipe penetrates through these
several layers of rock in order to reach the petroleum oil underneath. This oil can then be purified or
turned into gasoline for energy use. Offshore oil drilling, like its name describes, is specifically oil
drilling on the ocean floor, away from a shore line. Offshore oil drilling provides one of the most

economy, and because it is an easy and efficient source of energy. First, supporters of continuing
offshore oil drilling argue that it creates thousands of jobs, and that if offshore drilling were to end, the
revenue it creates would also come to an end. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, creation of
a gas to liquids industry resulting in thousands of new domestic jobs and potentially billions of dollars

employees ranging from business management teams to the workers on the rig. If offshore oil drilling
were to come to a stop, thousands of people would lose their jobs, and raise the unemployment rate in
America. Furthermore, the profit and revenue offshore oil drilling creates would come to an end. For
example, tax returns, income to land and mineral owners, and access to domestic resources would all
stop. (Crawford et al. 69). With so much dependence on the revenue offshore oil drilling brings in, a
stop to the offshore drilling would leave citizens, dependent on these resources and incomes, left to
look for new jobs and new sources of income. Secondly, the opposition makes the argument that
offshore oil drilling is a crucial part of the U.S. economy, and many Americans are dependent on the
oil and gas generated from it. To start,

Cultural Groups In The Algonquin People
The Algonquin people, Jesuit missionaries, and French laborers are three separate cultural groups that
are important to understand in the context of Native American and French peoples interactions. Each
group plays a significant role in the history of early French exploration and colonies in North America.
When focusing on each group, it is important to understand how each cultural group is portrayed, and
who is portraying them. The better we can understand these interactions the more we can learn from
our past. Defining each cultural group itself is complex. There were separate groups both within
Native Americans and the French people. Identifying these groups, who belongs to them and who
doesn t, is not always black and white and sometimes gray areas can occur. Distinguishing Algonquin
people from other Native Americans is an easy task. It can be done by looking at the area in which
they live, who they are allies with, and who they trade with. Typically, Algonquin people lived in the
New England area, they were allies with local native tribes that were regularly fighting the Iroquois
people, and they tended to trade and work with French colonists. They are usually described as

Youth Athletics Essay
Youth Athletics
In Reading, Massachusetts, one parent was beaten to death by another parent after a scuffle at a youth
hockey game (Sachs). In Palin Beach, Florida, a father of a little league player was sentenced to three
years in prison after taking a gun and pointing it at a coach (Gehring). In Port St. Lucie, Florida, a
headline in the evening paper read, Spectator Bites off Man s Ear at Youth Baseball Game (Pallerino).
Why would parents act in such negative ways? They are too competitive at youth athletic events.
During my five years refereeing youth sports, I have seen many examples of negative behavior. This
past September, a parent, whom I have known for a few years, approached me after a basketball game
her child s team ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was even told by a parent that there is nothing I can do if I want to fix this problem, but I would like
to try.
Let me share a few other personal experiences that motivate me. While I was refereeing a fifth grade
basketball tournament, a parent ran onto the floor after my officiating partner. While I was watching
an eighth grade girls game, the opposing team lost by one point. Directly after the buzzer sounded, a
whole section of parents left their seats and went onto the floor toward officials. I heard everything
from, I ll wait all night til you get out of that room, to Does anyone know what this guy is driving? to I
m gonna kill you.
Why are parents behaving this way? Professor Hypes believes that, Parents are living their lives
through their children. These parents may have not been successful during their childhood, and they
believe that they must do everything in their ability to have their child succeed. I have no doubt that
parents want the best for their children, but behaving this way does not show their children appropriate
respect. How can we expect children to portray sensible behavior when they witness their parents
doing worse? I often hear that we cannot allow children to use professional athletes as role models

Sleep Apnea Energy Essay example
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder affecting millions of Americans today. It is basically a disruption in
ones sleep pattern. Research states that ... Sleep apnea affects an estimated 5% to 10% of Americans
and is undiagnosed in most of them (Weintraub, 2013, p. 1) Sleep apnea contributes too numerous
health issues within the human body or worse death. For these reasons, further research and treatments
should be funded. The USA Today article entitled Sleep Apnea Booming; New Treatments Offer
Alternatives (Weintraub, 2013, p. 1)brings to light the growing numbers of Americans that are
undiagnosed and untreated for sleep apnea. And worse how most doctors fail to even diagnose patients
with sleep apnea. Sleep apnea use to be seen just as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oxygen is one of the key nutritional inputs to the process of life specifically energy. Sleep apnea
disrupts your breathing while you sleep.
This disruption limits the oxygen that gets into the body which limits the body s ability to produce
energy. This course also provides background information that helps one to understand the article and
the larger issue surrounding it in several ways. From the molecule of life, to cell structure, to how the
body captures and releases energy all provides the basic foundation for understanding the inns and
outs of biology (The study of life). Just like most cells have similar pieces and parts; it is fair to
hypothesis that through research, the rote cause for sleep apnea may be similar to other health issues.
This article caught my attention due to myself being diagnosed with sleep apnea. I have always been
told that I snored. My snoring has been compared to having a running diesel lawnmower in the bed
room. I never thought much of this criticism. Reading this article made realized that I have always had
but had been totally unaware of the symptoms for sleep apnea. As a United States Marine, I was
always in great physical shape, but yet, I was always tired and took daily naps. Speaking to a fellow
Marine about my constant fatigue, he made me aware of the disorder called sleep apnea. Up until that
point, I had never heard of it. I then realized

Cottage 40 Diary Essay
Diary of...a Cleaner Outer Spring cleaning arrived even earlier at Cottage 40 than spring this year. In
early February, I was noticed the pungent odor of the Buck Hill delivered hardwood ablaze in my
fireplace. Problem was, I was in my basement. There is no fireplace in my basement. Given that
Cottage 40 in its first incarnation burned to the ground, the house has bad fire juju. Before calling 911,
I decided to cajole my personal architectural advisor and neighbor, Jean McCoubrey, into taking a
walk down the stairs to take a whiff. Try checking the cleanout, she suggested. I wasn t quite sure
what a cleanout was (except as it pertained to a quinquennial procedure advised for individuals of a
certain age), but I deduced Jean was referring to what lay behind a two foot square cast iron door on
the wall of the basement, directly below the fireplace, about a foot off floor level. Access requires ...

I tried a long handled brush (too short), a deer fence stake (too long to fit in the opening) and a
decommissioned curtain rod (too flimsy). A chrome towel bar I d never gotten around to installing
worked well to liberate another foot or so of ash. I then ventured upstairs, trailing a cloud of dust like
Charlie Brown s pal Pig Pen, to search for something small yet long enough and sturdy, and to
replenish my plastic bag supply. I was now reduced to Target and TJ Maxx bags. Happily, I found the
perfect solution: a two foot shower curtain rod which twisted to extend further once inside the
opening. I poked, ash fell, I shoveled. I elongated the rod and poked again. Lather, rinse, repeat. I was
now extending the shower curtain rod slash impacted ash breaker upper up the hole five feet. Just as I
was reaching the end of my rope and the shower curtain rod the end of its extendable length I made
one last mighty upward stab and the last cubic foot of ash descended with a thunderous

Characteristics and Impacts of American Reconstruction Essay
Characteristics and Impacts of American Reconstruction The key goals of Reconstruction were to
readmit the South into the Union and to define the status of freedmen in American society. The
Reconstruction era was marked by political, not violent, conflict. Some historical myths are that the
South was victimized by Reconstruction, and that the various plans of Reconstruction were corrupt
and unjust. Actually, the plans were quite lenient, enforcing military rule for only a short period of
time, ignoring land reform, and granting pardons easily. The task of Reconstruction was to re integrate
America into a whole nation, securing the rights of each man and establishing order once again. There
were three major Reconstruction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under Johnson s plan, fifty percent of the voters in each Southern state who had voted in the 1860
election had to take an oath of loyalty to the Union. Then, each state was required to write new
constitutions adopting the 13th amendment (Boyer, 444). Johnson repudiated Confederate war debts,
and he also supported Black Codes. Johnson seemed sympathetic to Southern opinion at the expense
of freedmen s rights. He took steps to insure a dependant black work force for the South, and
restricted the rights of African Americans . Freedmen were not allowed to marry interracially, perform
jury duty, or give testimony in court against whites. Johnson s plan was fatally flawed; his requirement
that each state adopt the 13th amendment was practically useless as it only dealt with Federal
elections. State elections were more important to citizens during the Reconstruction era, and unless
Johnson guaranteed State voting rights to freedmen he was offering them hardly anything at all. Also,
Johnson supported Black Codes against Northern public opinion, which damaged him politically in
the North. Finally, Johnson did not deal with land reform or economic aid, which was economically
unsound. In Congress, the Radicals and Moderates were forced to join forces to overturn Johnson s
extremely lenient plan. Caught up in battles with Congress and an impeachment scandal until he left
office, Johnson did not achieve his Reconstruction goals. Congress

Afghanistan Drug War Research Paper
Afghanistan to guard the poppy plant fields. Poppy grows abundantly in the Middle East but is mostly
found in Afghanistan. Poppy produces a euphoric compound known as opium. Opium is obviously a
drug; however, it is not that fact that should disturb you. Opium is used in the production of heroin.
Heroin use has been on the rise for the past three years in the United States. The available evidence
points to only one outcome, and that is that the United States is participating in the production and
distribution of heroin and is therefore directly responsible for the rise in heroin use. Why else would
the FDA approve a heroin overdose kit to be sold in the markets? The fact of the matter is that the
government is aiding in addiction, has completely made up the war on drugs, and is operating on some
sort of hidden agenda. The CIA had a plane flying over the U.S./Mexican border that crashed. Among
the debris at the crash site was several kilos of cocaine. How odd is it that the CIA would be
transporting cocaine into the United States? In regards to drug policy, the United States must call back
troops in the Middle East and return the Poppy fields to the people of Afghanistan. Heroin use would
decrease. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Extreme monetary fees and a 50 year maximum should be enforced to discourage manufacturing and

Some steps are already being taken by President Obama to reform the nation s drug policy. The White
House has proposed diversion plans that aide in substance abuse counselling and gives you an
opportunity to give back to the community. These plans have already been implemented nationwide
and are very successful. Diversion programs have brought the country millions of dollars, though,
because individuals going through diversion are required to pay their way through it. That is
counterproductive. Tax money should be allocated

Comparison of HR Practices and Employment Relations...
Comparison of HR Practices and Employment Relations Philosophies in China and Taiwan
Introduction
In the face of ever increasing globalization, both China and Taiwan have now joined the World Trade
Organisation (WTO); a more open market economy and closer integration with the global economic
order appears to be inevitable for both countries (Magarinos et al. 2002). Human Resource
Management (HRM) is one of the critical tools for improving productivity and competitiveness at the
grass roots level (Poole 1997). This Essays aims to identify and compare the current HRM systems
and practices at different types of enterprises in both China and Taiwan respectively (Zhu and Warner
2000), to evaluate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under the reformed employment system, Chinese managers now have greater freedom to hire and fire
(Child, 1994). Even though fully fledged HRM on Western lines seems still far away, many personnel
policies have been substantially changed: workers are employed on fixed term contracts,
apprenticeships have been reformed, and training has been expanded for both workers and managers
in most Joint Ventures and State Owned Enterprises (Warner, 1997).
With the reforms of the employment system, a new terminology of HRM cam to China in the mid
1980s (Warner 1999). Initially, HRM as an academic concept was introduced by joined teaching
arrangements between Chinese and foreign universities, as well as in management practices in foreign
owned enterprises, mainly from Japan, the USA and Europe (Warner 1995). The Chinese translation
of HRM is renli ziyuan guanli hich means labour force resources management . But in fact, some
people now use it misleadingly as a synonym for personnel management (PM) (renshi guanli) and
indeed treat it as such (Warner 1997). This form of older PM practice is still very common in SOEs
and a fair degree of conservatism continues to pervade the administration of personnel on such
enterprises. Certainly, it is still somewhat far from the initial concept of HRM as understood in

Examples Of Normative Relativism
Normal Relativism
Tyger Thompson
In a very multicultural world, philosophers have tried to come up with ways to solve the inevitable
moral conflicts that arise due to cultural differences. These moral conflicts between cultures arise
because diverse cultures have different standards for what they believe to be morally correct. One such
theory is known as relativism. The theory of relativism states that morality is relative. This theory has
certain appeals. There is much diversity in moral belief, and many people believe that tolerance is
important. However, this can run into problems when held to the strict version.
There are different versions of relativism, with the version most important to philosophers being
normative relativism. Its premises are as follows:
A believes B is morally correct.
Therefore, B is morally correct for A. (Rachels, 2015)
Normative relativists have come up with several reasons to defend their theory, and there have been
many objections, some of them being rather damning. One defence is known as the argument from
moral disagreement. Normal relativists argue that since there are many disagreements between
societies and cultures about what is morally correct, and therefore conclude that there is no objective
universal standard for morality, and thus morality is completely relative. Thus, the ... Show more

For example, a certain culture believes that murdering infants is acceptable. The normative relativist
position would entail accepting this as morally correct for that culture, although common sense would
lead us to disagree wholeheartedly. This leads us to question where the boundaries of a culture lie, as
there is clearly a basic universal moral standard that should never be acceptable in any culture
regardless. Normative relativism disregards this potential universal moral code, which can lead to
some absurd results, such as the example of infanticide. (Southern Illinois University ,

Thales Of Miletus And The Elastic School Of Philosophy
From Thales of Miletus, the first ancient Greek philosopher, to Socrates and Aristotle, ancient Greek
philosophy has set the standard for modern intellectual and rational thought. They developed new
ways of reasoning and logic to explain the natural phenomena that surround them. Reality, existence,
and the essence of things were the basis of what these philosophers sought to rationalize. In this paper,
I will be discussing the epistemology and ontology presented by The Eleatics, the Pluralists, and The
Atomists. These three Pre Socratic schools often opposed one another s epistemological and
ontological views. However, each critic resulted in even more theories and laws that we still use to
this day. Their works also improved the standard for argument which became of great use to the future
Classical and modern philosophers.
The Eleatics
The Elastic School of Philosophy, established by Parmenides in the fifth century, was best known for
the development of early philosophers including Zeno of Elea and Xenophanes of Colophon. The
Elastics works often pointed to their use of logic and reason rather than sense experience to find the
ultimate truths . These ultimate truths were concerned with the Being and Becoming of things rather
than the origin of the things themselves. In this section, we are going to focus primarily on the school
s prominent advocates: Parmenides, writer of On Nature, and Zeno, founder of the dialectic method.
Together, Parmenides and Zeno laid the

A Bar At The Folies Bernre Summary
Humanities Mod 2 Benjamin Dyck Rasmussen College Author Note This paper is being submitted to
the Humanities course on 12/11/2017. A Bar at the Folies Bergère Artist: Edouard Manet (1832 83).
Subject: Suzon, according to the recollections of Manet s friends: a young woman who worked at the
Folies Bergère, one of the great Parisian cafés concerts , a kind of beer hall with music, circus acts and
other entertainment. Analysis: This painting, which was actually painted when Manet was critically ill,
upholds the artist s conflicting outlook. One approach at looking at this painting, shows it features a
modern locale in The Folies Bergere the most renowned and modern of Paris s cafe concert halls,
which was noted among many other things for its innovative electric lights. In addition, its brushwork
is Impressionistic and its framing has been swayed by the new art of photography. And another
approach, its meaning is totally opaque, even inexplicable, dealing as it does with a problem that
engaged Manet throughout his entire adult life: the relationship, in figurative painting, between
realism and illusion. Probably modelled on Las Meninas (1656), the enigmatic Baroque masterpiece
by Velazquez, the painting seems to be a straightforward frontal image of a barkeep serving behind her
counter, who peers out at us, the viewer/patron. Then we see the giant mirror behind her and the
confusing reflections it holds. The woman s reflection has been turned to the right; while in the

  • 2. John Knowles A Separate Peace A Separate Peace Final Paper The setting of A Separate Peace by John Knowles plays a large role in the plot of the story. The most important parts of the novel take place at the Devon School. Another thing that makes Devon so important is that it s where the main characters live. As I mentioned before, Devon is where most of the important parts of the novel take place and it s where the main characters live, that is why Devon is so significant. The time period was also very important; the novel takes place during World War II and Devon is a school where boys are trained to be soldiers. The war is used as a symbol; it represents depression, anger, and the end of childhood. The Devon School can change based on the season. During the summer session, Devon is a peaceful place and shows the innocence of childhood and friendship. When the winter session arrives the peaceful atmosphere disappears and the school becomes gloomy, tense, and a more hostile place as the boys grow up. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He attended the Phillips Exeter Academy and based Devon and the events in the story around his experiences( John Knowles ). Instead of trying to come up with a story that he couldn t relate to, he based it around a real life experience which made the novel more realistic. The more realistic he could make the story, the more people would like it because then the readers could feel like these characters are real and could relate to them. He combined a real experience with the first person point of view making it seem like it could have all happened, he could have cause his best friend to fall out of a tree, a friend could have enlisted and later gone insane, but Knowles claims that he never experienced the negative part of his ... • 3. Goneril And Graglear Shakespeare s play, King Lear, tells the tragic tale of a king who has been driven mad. Goneril and Regan are portrayed as the main villains of the story who get into a power struggle with their father and are held responsible for the downfall of the King. However, when further inspecting the psychological complexity of each character we can see that the true downfall of King Lear was the absent role of a mother. Goneril, Regan, and King Lear are proven incapable of holding any type of functional relationship. The reason for this is that each of these characters feels the need to be in control. Goneril and Regan are influenced in every action by their desire to be in power. They destroyed their father and each other in the fight for control. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he asks for her to proclaim her love to him she simply answers, Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave my heart into my mouth. I love your Majesty. (1.1 1145). King Lear acted out maliciously because he did not have control of the situation so he banished the one daughter who would have truly loved him. When King Lear gives his kingdom to Goneril and Regan, it is the first instance of King Lear giving up some of his control, but also the first instance in his decline to insanity. King Lear soon loses all control when Goneril and Regan refuse to let him stay with them. I gave you all... (2.4 170) Lear says to both Regan and himself when he realizes he has nothing left. Not only does King Lear lose control of his kingdom and his daughters, but also his emotions, You see me here, you gods, a poor old man s full of grief as age, wretched in both. If it be you that stir these daughters hearts against their father, fool me not so much to bear it tamely. Touch me with noble anger. And let not women s weapons, water drops, tain my man s cheeks! No, you unnatural hags. (2.4 1179). In this quote, King Lear is beginning to act truly hysterical, and he compares his uncontrollable emotions to the emotions of a woman. • 4. Nonhuman Primate Communication That Humans Learn Their... One form of nonhuman primate communication that occurs in the wild is through noises (Zuberbuhler 6). Most primates have species specific sounds for certain situations (Zuberbuhler 6). For example, vervet monkeys have different alarm calls for different types of predators (Zuberbuhler 10). The listeners of these calls respond to each call differently, protecting themselves from specific predators (Zuberbuhler 10). This means that they are not just reacting to another monkey being scared, but they know what scared it based on the call the monkey makes. Specific calls therefore can be said to symbolize specific meanings (Zuberbuhler 10). However, it is not known whether or not this is intentional or if the monkeys are aware of this. While this would not necessarily be considered a language, it is one of their natural forms of communication. The human listeners and nonhuman listeners both interpret arbitrary noises to mean something specific (Zuberbuhler 11). However, a difference between human language and these primate calls is that humans learn their language socially (Zuberbuhler 11). There is no evidence to say that nonhuman primate calls or sounds are learned socially instead of instinctual (Zuberbuhler 11). In fact, there is some evidence to support the opposite. Monkeys reared in social isolation produce basically all their species typical call types from soon after birth (Arbib 1054). This means that these species specific calls are not taught, but they know them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Analysis Of A Long Walk To Water The lost boys. That was what they were being called in America the boys who had lost their homes and families because of the war and had wandered, lost, for weeks or months at a time before reaching the refugee camps (91). Linda Sue Park wrote a novel based on one of these boys called A long walk to water. Salva Dut was a boy alone in Sudan and becomes a survivor by also becoming a leader, adapting to situations, and overcoming dangerous obstacles. Salva was a lost boy in a big world that had many problems, but he overcomes them by helping others as a leader (91). Salva s uncle was the leader of the group he was staying in and he shared all the food he got to the group, but it seemed they had all forgotten that, for now Salva now had to beg for scraps, which were given grudgingly (67). Salva was alone now because his uncle was killed in the war, so after he died, the group did not treat him with the same respect that Salva had to his uncle. Much later, after Salva became alone again and was left to fend for himself, Salva had become the leader of a group of about fifteen hundred boys (80). After Salva got older the group looked to him to lead them to the new refugee camps because the camps in Sudan were closing. As Salva became the leader of the boys he didn t just walk with them, he helped them personally Salva would talk to them, encourage them, coax and persuade them (81). Salva was a true leader because he actually helped the group like his uncle by talking to them, sharing with them, and showing them the way to get what they need, he also showed them how to adapt to situations. Salva was one of the many who faced multiple situations in America and to overcome them he adapted to them. Salva was in so many camps that he heard the aid workers talk and get a little english down but after so many years in the camps, Salva could understand a little english (86). Michael was an Irish aid worker that helped Salva a little english and teach him some letters to memorize. • 7. Reflection Paper On Moral Disengagement Introduction We live in a society in which unethical actions are always justified as moral because the majority are involved in the deeds. We always face an ethical dilemma in different situations, and it becomes difficult to make a rational decision. This reflection paper aims at exploring the issue of moral disengagement. Reasons for moral disengagement will be discussed. What? From the reading, I understand that people think and act differently when faced with ethical issues. For one to make a rational decision, an extensive process of judgment is required (Bandura, Caprara, Zsolnai, 2000). For an individual to be responsible, he or she should put into consideration the magnitude of the consequences of the actions, social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Justification of a wrong action would be a moral disengagement. Unethical actions always cause severe consequences to society. Currently, there are cases of cheating and secret use of unwanted written materials during exam times. They portray unpreparedness and laziness on the part of a student. It is unethical since it does not show faithfulness and integrity in studies. Teaching from this material helps me to be dependable and not to be morally disengaged because of diffusion of responsibility. Unethical conduct can be attributed to the behavior of a particular group. The teaching is important to me because I have learned on how to be responsible for my actions and to act ethically even at a student level. The practice of morals at a young age will help me to remain ethical even at old age. Lastly, there are emerging issues observed in the media which involve people displaying their nakedness to the public. Such deeds demonstrate lack of self respect, and there is no particular individual to blame since it was one provoked by only one victim and other people followed. Reading from the material provided concerns me that I should practice personal values and ethics and emphasize on self respect and individual principles. Introduction The Bernoulli family is the most prominent family in the mathematical world; the name Bernoulli belonged to six mathematicians at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries. Bernoulli numbers first appeared in 1713 in Ars Conjectandi [page 97] written by Jakob Bernoulli(1654 1705). With the publication of Ars Conjectandi, the development of probability was brought about; it is considered the founding idea of probability. Bernoulli worked for many years on his book, although his work was incomplete it made headway once it was published regarding the use of rational numbers in a sequence regarding trigonometry functions. Bernoulli contracted tuberculosis and passed away before he was able to complete the book, family members published his work several years after his death. Until recently, I had always accepted technology as a wonderful friend, but after doing some in depth reading and research on the topic I found that technology also has its draw backs. Through research I found that technology has been nothing more than a journey of trial and error. In my research I discovered what I choose to call the dark side of technology. Everyday household conveniences, transportation, and modern medicine are all products of technology that are an integral part of our society. More often than not these products and services are viewed as assets or friends of our society .and the draw backs are often overlooked And why not ? We are a Convenience oriented society, ... • 10. Persuasive Essay On Losing Weight According to the Center for Disease Control over 70% of adults over the age of 20 are overweight, and 38% of the population are classified as obese (cdc.gov). Every day we are sold by the idea of The magical cure all , some supplement or diet that will somehow fix every issue for you. The idea that we can literally change nothing about our lives and drop weight is seductive and tempting, but ultimately it s utterly false. At its most basic level, losing weight is a math issue and nothing more. There is no magical pill or supplement that will somehow make you burn all the extra calories you re intaking everyday. So, with that said we are left with one of two options; diet, or change your lifestyle. Dieting is defined as restricting oneself to small amounts or special kind of food in order to lose weight. Instantly with that definition you receive such a negative connotation to the idea of fat loss. The idea that a person has to Restrict themselves is almost offensive to the average adult, it simply implies that they have this supreme lack of willpower and have to force themselves into an uncomfortable position. In 2012 twenty billion dollars was spent in the weight loss industry, the average American will attempt to lose weight five times before any meaningful results (The weight loss industry by the numbers). When I first heard about the assignment I was extremely nervous for what would lie ahead. I m not a very talkative person and hardly ever just have random conversations with people that I don t know. I knew that this assignment would certainly get me out of my comfort zone, and cause me to really branch out. A huge part of talking to others about Christ is to just start up a simple conversation to work off of. It can become even more difficult when someone has a different background or separate moral values. I was by no means looking forward to the awkwardness that would possibly lie ahead, we decided that the best place to start would be Walmart since people are there 24/7. We walked in at around 9 p.m. and started our search. After about 20 minutes we finally decided to make our move on someone. We walked up to a young man that looked to be in high school and began our conversation. We started off by just introducing ourselves and telling him that we were working on an assignment and just wanted to get to know him a little bit better. The conversation actually flowed really well and we had a lot in common like our love for sports and technology. His name is Dilan Patel and he s a junior at Siloam High. Similarly, in the book A Life for God: The Medieval Monastery, by William Lace, the main piece that all monks lived under was something called the Benedictine rule. This rule mapped out the work and pray for an everyday monk. Consent is not the only lacking aspect in Sex Education throughout the country, a lot of important ideas and information is debated and left out of the classroom due to fears of stepping on toes, or touching on age old ideas about sex and religion. Over the years many have argued that parents personal liberties must be protected when it comes to educating their children. In most states these liberties are presented in a manor that allows for the religious opposition to sexual education. Robert P. George and Melissa Moschella, academics from Princeton recently published an article titled Does Sex Ed Undermine Parental Rights? in the New York Times, about the idea that Sexual Education does in fact violate parental rights and liberties. Here, in a selection from the piece, even the secular side of the argument against Sex Ed in the classroom is visible, True, the state needs to protect children from abuse and neglect. It is also true that the state has a legitimate interest in reducing teenage pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. But it is not abuse or neglect to protect the innocence of preteenage children or to teach one s children more conservative, as opposed to more liberal, moral values. Nor is it wrong or unreasonable to limit the state s control over what one s children learn and think about sensitive issues of morality...Turning a classroom into a mandatory catechism lesson for a contested ideology is a serious ... The Great Playwright s Life Story Before the relatively short life of Lorraine Hansberry tragically ended, the African American playwright distinguished herself in American theatre and literature as she creatively and unknowingly challenged the views of African American life, among other inescapable issues of the nation and the world, on the theatrical stage. The great playwright s life story began on May 19, 1930. Although born during a time of hardship introduced by the Great Depression, Hansberry grew up rather comfortably in a middle class African American family from the Southside of Chicago ( Lorraine ). Her father, Carl Augustus Hansberry, not only established Lake Street Bank, one of the first Chicago banks to solicit black patronage, but also established himself as a successful real estate businessman (Jacobus, Lorraine 1223). Despite the middle class status, the family experienced racial tension, especially when the family bought and moved into a home in a racially restricted covenant which later resulted in the Hansberry vs. Lee U.S. Supreme Court case that influenced Hansberry s writing ( Lorraine ). After graduating Englewood High School in Chicago in 1948, Lorraine Hansberry left for college to pursue her interest in visual art ( Lorraine ). Offshore oil drilling incorporates a wide variety of employees ranging from business management teams to the workers on the rig. Furthermore, the profit and revenue offshore oil drilling creates would come to an end. For example, tax returns, income to land and mineral owners, and access to domestic resources would all stop. (Crawford et al. 69). With so much dependence on the revenue offshore oil drilling brings in, a stop to the offshore drilling would leave citizens, dependent on these resources and incomes, left to look for new jobs and new sources of income. Secondly, the opposition makes the argument that offshore oil drilling is a crucial part of the U.S. economy, and many Americans are dependent on the oil and gas generated from it. To start, ... • 40. Cultural Groups In The Algonquin People The Algonquin people, Jesuit missionaries, and French laborers are three separate cultural groups that are important to understand in the context of Native American and French peoples interactions. Each group plays a significant role in the history of early French exploration and colonies in North America. When focusing on each group, it is important to understand how each cultural group is portrayed, and who is portraying them. The better we can understand these interactions the more we can learn from our past. Defining each cultural group itself is complex. There were separate groups both within Native Americans and the French people. Identifying these groups, who belongs to them and who doesn t, is not always black and white and sometimes gray areas can occur. Distinguishing Algonquin people from other Native Americans is an easy task. It can be done by looking at the area in which they live, who they are allies with, and who they trade with. Typically, Algonquin people lived in the New England area, they were allies with local native tribes that were regularly fighting the Iroquois people, and they tended to trade and work with French colonists. They are usually described as savages, and portrayed as uncivilized people that are extremely strong. Father Paul Le Jeune, a Jesuit living in French North America, describes them, They are tall, erect, strong, well proportioned, agile; and there is nothing effeminate in their appearance (Paul Le Jeune, America Firsthand, p. ... In early February, I was noticed the pungent odor of the Buck Hill delivered hardwood ablaze in my fireplace. Problem was, I was in my basement. There is no fireplace in my basement. Given that Cottage 40 in its first incarnation burned to the ground, the house has bad fire juju. Before calling 911, I decided to cajole my personal architectural advisor and neighbor, Jean McCoubrey, into taking a walk down the stairs to take a whiff. Try checking the cleanout, she suggested. I wasn t quite sure what a cleanout was (except as it pertained to a quinquennial procedure advised for individuals of a certain age), but I deduced Jean was referring to what lay behind a two foot square cast iron door on the wall of the basement, directly below the fireplace, about a foot off floor level. • 44. Characteristics and Impacts of American Reconstruction Essay Characteristics and Impacts of American Reconstruction The key goals of Reconstruction were to readmit the South into the Union and to define the status of freedmen in American society. The Reconstruction era was marked by political, not violent, conflict. Some historical myths are that the South was victimized by Reconstruction, and that the various plans of Reconstruction were corrupt and unjust. Actually, the plans were quite lenient, enforcing military rule for only a short period of time, ignoring land reform, and granting pardons easily. The task of Reconstruction was to re integrate America into a whole nation, securing the rights of each man and establishing order once again. There were three major Reconstruction ... Then, each state was required to write new constitutions adopting the 13th amendment (Boyer, 444). Johnson repudiated Confederate war debts, and he also supported Black Codes. Johnson seemed sympathetic to Southern opinion at the expense of freedmen s rights. He took steps to insure a dependant black work force for the South, and restricted the rights of African Americans . Freedmen were not allowed to marry interracially, perform jury duty, or give testimony in court against whites. Johnson s plan was fatally flawed; his requirement that each state adopt the 13th amendment was practically useless as it only dealt with Federal elections. State elections were more important to citizens during the Reconstruction era, and unless Johnson guaranteed State voting rights to freedmen he was offering them hardly anything at all. Also, Johnson supported Black Codes against Northern public opinion, which damaged him politically in the North. Finally, Johnson did not deal with land reform or economic aid, which was economically unsound. In Congress, the Radicals and Moderates were forced to join forces to overturn Johnson s extremely lenient plan. Poppy produces a euphoric compound known as opium. Opium is obviously a drug; however, it is not that fact that should disturb you. Opium is used in the production of heroin. Heroin use has been on the rise for the past three years in the United States. The available evidence points to only one outcome, and that is that the United States is participating in the production and distribution of heroin and is therefore directly responsible for the rise in heroin use. Why else would the FDA approve a heroin overdose kit to be sold in the markets? The fact of the matter is that the government is aiding in addiction, has completely made up the war on drugs, and is operating on some sort of hidden agenda. The CIA had a plane flying over the U.S./Mexican border that crashed. Among the debris at the crash site was several kilos of cocaine. Comparison of HR Practices and Employment Relations Philosophies in China and Taiwan Introduction In the face of ever increasing globalization, both China and Taiwan have now joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO); a more open market economy and closer integration with the global economic order appears to be inevitable for both countries (Magarinos et al. 2002). Human Resource Management (HRM) is one of the critical tools for improving productivity and competitiveness at the grass roots level (Poole 1997). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under the reformed employment system, Chinese managers now have greater freedom to hire and fire (Child, 1994). Even though fully fledged HRM on Western lines seems still far away, many personnel policies have been substantially changed: workers are employed on fixed term contracts, apprenticeships have been reformed, and training has been expanded for both workers and managers in most Joint Ventures and State Owned Enterprises (Warner, 1997). With the reforms of the employment system, a new terminology of HRM cam to China in the mid 1980s (Warner 1999). Initially, HRM as an academic concept was introduced by joined teaching arrangements between Chinese and foreign universities, as well as in management practices in foreign owned enterprises, mainly from Japan, the USA and Europe (Warner 1995). The Chinese translation of HRM is renli ziyuan guanli hich means labour force resources management . But in fact, some people now use it misleadingly as a synonym for personnel management (PM) (renshi guanli) and indeed treat it as such (Warner 1997). This form of older PM practice is still very common in SOEs and a fair degree of conservatism continues to pervade the administration of personnel on such enterprises. Certainly, it is still somewhat far from the initial concept of HRM as understood in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Examples Of Normative Relativism Normal Relativism Tyger Thompson In a very multicultural world, philosophers have tried to come up with ways to solve the inevitable moral conflicts that arise due to cultural differences. These moral conflicts between cultures arise because diverse cultures have different standards for what they believe to be morally correct. One such theory is known as relativism. The theory of relativism states that morality is relative. This theory has certain appeals. There is much diversity in moral belief, and many people believe that tolerance is important. However, this can run into problems when held to the strict version. There are different versions of relativism, with the version most important to philosophers being normative relativism. Its premises are as follows: A believes B is morally correct. Therefore, B is morally correct for A. (Rachels, 2015) Normative relativists have come up with several reasons to defend their theory, and there have been many objections, some of them being rather damning. One defence is known as the argument from moral disagreement. Normal relativists argue that since there are many disagreements between societies and cultures about what is morally correct, and therefore conclude that there is no objective universal standard for morality, and thus morality is completely relative. Thus, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, a certain culture believes that murdering infants is acceptable. The normative relativist position would entail accepting this as morally correct for that culture, although common sense would lead us to disagree wholeheartedly. Normative relativism disregards this potential universal moral code, which can lead to some absurd results, such as the example of infanticide. (Southern Illinois University , ... • 48. Thales Of Miletus And The Elastic School Of Philosophy From Thales of Miletus, the first ancient Greek philosopher, to Socrates and Aristotle, ancient Greek philosophy has set the standard for modern intellectual and rational thought. They developed new ways of reasoning and logic to explain the natural phenomena that surround them. Reality, existence, and the essence of things were the basis of what these philosophers sought to rationalize. In this paper, I will be discussing the epistemology and ontology presented by The Eleatics, the Pluralists, and The Atomists. These three Pre Socratic schools often opposed one another s epistemological and ontological views. However, each critic resulted in even more theories and laws that we still use to this day. Their works also improved the standard for argument which became of great use to the future Classical and modern philosophers. The Eleatics The Elastic School of Philosophy, established by Parmenides in the fifth century, was best known for the development of early philosophers including Zeno of Elea and Xenophanes of Colophon. The Elastics works often pointed to their use of logic and reason rather than sense experience to find the ultimate truths . These ultimate truths were concerned with the Being and Becoming of things rather than the origin of the things themselves. In this section, we are going to focus primarily on the school s prominent advocates: Parmenides, writer of On Nature, and Zeno, founder of the dialectic method. • 49. A Bar At The Folies Bernre Summary Humanities Mod 2 Benjamin Dyck Rasmussen College Author Note This paper is being submitted to the Humanities course on 12/11/2017. A Bar at the Folies Bergère Artist: Edouard Manet (1832 83). Subject: Suzon, according to the recollections of Manet s friends: a young woman who worked at the Folies Bergère, one of the great Parisian cafés concerts , a kind of beer hall with music, circus acts and other entertainment. Analysis: This painting, which was actually painted when Manet was critically ill, upholds the artist s conflicting outlook. One approach at looking at this painting, shows it features a modern locale in The Folies Bergere the most renowned and modern of Paris s cafe concert halls, which was noted among many other things for its innovative electric lights. In addition, its brushwork is Impressionistic and its framing has been swayed by the new art of photography. And another approach, its meaning is totally opaque, even inexplicable, dealing as it does with a problem that engaged Manet throughout his entire adult life: the relationship, in figurative painting, between realism and illusion. Probably modelled on Las Meninas (1656), the enigmatic Baroque masterpiece by Velazquez, the painting seems to be a straightforward frontal image of a barkeep serving behind her counter, who peers out at us, the viewer/patron. Then we see the giant mirror behind her and the confusing reflections it holds. The woman s reflection has been turned to the right; while in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
